Afghanistan
Police Investigate Violence in North
[Tolo News] Investigations have been launched to find the circles behind insecurity in northern Afghanistan, senior police officials in the north told TOLOnews.

Some al-Qaeda linked fighters were massively involved in escalation of violence in this part of the country, General Dawood Dawood, Commander of the Pamir 303 Zone told TOLOnews.

General Dawood emphasised that the northern region would soon be cleared of hard boys.

North of Afghanistan, parts of which have been under the Taliban control for some time, has been the scene of some deadly terrorist attacks that have ended up with deaths of numerous people.

Security transition process is expected to begin from north, perhaps of some gains being made by forces in the fight against hard boys.

"We have several other military operations ahead and I'm sure that by the time the operations come to an end, there won't be any room for Islamic fascisti in the north," General Dawood told TOLOnews.

General Dawood claimed that there were imported muscle among the Islamic fascisti carrying out attacks to target government buildings.

Officials believed that there are some specific circles hugely linked to insurgency in the north region.

"There are a number of Talibs coming from neighbouring countries to build sanctuaries," he said.

Lack of a sufficient number of police forces to ensure security and poor equipment are the two factors that have led to violence and instability in these parts.

...back at the ranch...

Insurgents use Improvised Explosive Devices to target the Afghan and foreign forces in the country.

According to reports dozens of cut-throats have been jugged in the Afghan and Nato forces' operations in country.

The Afghan and foreign officials said violence will increase in the country and 2011 is an important year for the Afghan war.

21 Villages Cleared of Insurgents in Takhar
[Tolo News] Twenty one villages have been cleared in Afghan and Isaf military operations in northern Takhar province, local officials said.

Afghan officials said the operation was launched two days ago in Khwaja Ghar district of Takhar province to wipe out the cut-thoats.

More than nine hard boyz including an Tajik national were killed in different parts of this province and two others including an Uzbek Death Eater were jugged, Shah Jahan Noori, police chief of Takhar, told TOLOnews.

Taliban have not yet commented.
It's hard to admit defeat, when defeat means your god disapproves of you.
There were no Afghan forces or civilian casualties in the operations, he added.

The operations have continued in other parts of Khwaja Ghar district to clear the insecure areas in province.

Takhar province is bordered by Uzbekistan and hard boyz infiltrate into Afghanistan to fight against Afghan government.

'RPGs fired at police station in Egypt'
[Iran Press TV] Hours after Egyptian police rubbed out an anti-government activist, protesters have retaliated by firing three rockets, but there are no reports on any casualties, security officials said.

The first rocket, which was fired at a cop shoppe in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, missed its target and hit a nearby medical center, officials said.

The second rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) landed in an empty space, while the third hit a cop shoppe three kilometers (two miles) from the town, setting it on fire. The checkpoint had been evacuated earlier in the day.

No casualty has been reported from the rocket attacks.

With two new deaths on Thursday, the third day of the ongoing violence, the corpse count has reached seven, AFP reported.

The anti-government protesters nationwide are demanding democracy, the ouster of geriatric President Hosni Mubarak who has ruled the country for some 30 years, and more employment opportunities.

The protesters in the Sinai were Bedouin, some of whom are heavily armed, and complain of government discrimination.

Clashes broke out in Sheikh Zuwaid earlier Thursday after witnesses and relatives said a youth died when he was shot in the head by police.

New protests continued to pop up across the country, with the most recent reported late Thursday on Haram Street, one of Cairo's main avenues.

It was the first time there had been protests in this area, one of Cairo's poorer neighborhoods. Security forces tried to rush to the area, but were confounded in their attempts as the protesters moved to block traffic.

Leonel Estrada Edgar Morales, 55, and his nephew Victor Emilio Estrada, 27, are being held in Guatemala until the United States can prove to the Guatemalan court sufficient evidence exists to extradite the two suspects to the United States for trial on drug trafficking charges. The extradition treaty between the US and Guatemala give the US 40 days to make its case for extradition.

Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident
A "Black Widow" bomb donkey planned a terrorist attack in central Moscow on New Year's Eve but was prematurely explodulated when an unexpected text message set off her bomb too early, according to various Russian spooks.

The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt near Red Square on New Year's Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds.

Security sources believe a message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her at a safe house.
Happy New Year for those Red Square revelers at any rate.
Mohammedan terrorists in Russia often use mobile phones as detonators. The bomber's handler, who is usually watching their charge, sends the bomber a text message in order to set off his or her explosive underwear at the moment when it is thought they can inflict the most deaders and other benefits for the cause.

The dead woman has not been identified, but her husband is apparently serving time in jail for being a member of a radical Islamist terror group.
Send him a text.
Security sources believe the New Year's Eve bomber and the airport bombers may have been members of a suicide squad trained in Pakistain's al-Qaida cesspools which was sent to target the Russian capital's transport system.

Nobody has been arrested in connection with Monday's bombing, which left 35 people dead. Police are trying to identify the severed head of a male suicide bomber recovered from the scene.
No doubt another satisfied reader of How to Get A Head in Your Personal Jihad, by O. bin Laden.

#4  I've made an argument years ago to our security infrastructure that in the first weeks of life new cellular objects (phones etc..) should receive random informative calls, messages. Reason? You are not likely to use an existing phone as a bomb because somebody might just call...

It suggests that for maximum state security... phone numbers should be recycled LIFO (Last in Fist out). That way old users contacts should randomly call until they figure out it's a new user. Those random calls could prematurely blow up a bomber - hopefully at home.

Four dead in Dagestan car bomb
[Al Jazeera] Four people have been killed and six maimed in a car boom kaboom outside a cafe in the Russian region of Dagestan.

The attack is the deadliest to hit the Northern Caucasus region since Monday's suicide kaboom on a Moscow airport that killed 35 people and been blamed on fighters from the overwhelmingly Mohammedan area.

The blast took place at just after 10:00pm local time (1900 GMT) on Wednesday outside the Karavan cafe on the outskirts of the town of Khasavyurt.

"Four people were killed, all of them civilians," a local interior ministry front man told the RIA Novosti news agency.

Six people were maimed, three of whom were hospitalised.

A criminal investigation has been opened into an "act of terror and illegal use of explosives", the Interfax news agency said, quoting the local branch of the investigative committee.

Investigators believe that about 30kg of TNT equivalent explosives were used in the blast.

Attacks by fighters have claimed hundreds of lives in the Northern Caucasus over the last years as they wage a campaign against the authorities with the aim of imposing an Islamic state in the region.

Airport suspect

In a separate development, Russian media reports on Thursday said that Sherlocks were searching for an ethnic Russian member of a North Caucasus group who vanished last year and is suspected of involvement in the attack on the Moscow airport.

Investigators have yet to publish any firm conclusions three days after the attack but unofficial reports have made a link with the group and a mysterious kaboom in Moscow on December 31.

The Kommersant newspaper said the investigation was focusing on a man named Razdobudko from the Stavropol region, just north of the Caucasus mountains, who is suspected of belonging to a local armed Mohammedan group, Nogaisky Dzhamaat.

Suggesting that he could have been the jacket wallah, Kommersant said the authorities now believed that the attacker was most likely to have been a male ethnic Russian rather than from one of the Caucasus ethnic groups.

"He is not the only person suspected of involvement in the attacks," it quoted a security source as saying. "So it's not worth hurrying with conclusions."

Similar reports also appeared on other Russian news outlets, with a security source telling RIA Novosti that Razdobudko had vanished along with his wife in October last year.

The news agency said police were looking up to 10 suspects from Caucasus in connection with the bombing

Kommersant also reaffirmed previous reports the airport attack appears linked to a blast in Moscow late on December 31 where a suspected female jacket wallah is believed to have accidentally blown herself up.

Europe
Explosion at Davos Hotel during World Economic Forum
[An Nahar] A small blast shattered two windows but caused no injuries at a hotel near where top business and politicians are attending the World Economic Forum, Swiss police said Thursday.

The kaboom happened in a storage room of the Posthotel Morosani shortly after 9 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) Thursday, regional police front man Thomas Hobi told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

He said federal prosecutors are investigating whether the blast has a criminal origin.

The hotel is just over a mile (around 2 kilometers) from the main venue of the annual gathering in the Alpine ski resort of Davos. A Forum-related lunch focusing on organized crime, called "Criminals Without Borders" was scheduled at the hotel at noon, with speakers including Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Robert Wainwright, the director of Europol, or European Police.

There is tight security at the World Economic Forum as left-wing groups plan to hold a protest this weekend against the annual meeting of political and business leaders and social activists.

Anonymous flyers circulated at a demonstration last week in the northeastern Swiss town of St. Gallen urged activist to "Smash (the) WEF."

The flyer says: "Let us fight together against the unbearable propaganda of capitalism."

In previous years violent activists have stayed away from the chic ski resort and staged violent demonstrations elsewhere in Switzerland instead.

Qaeda leader admits facing pressure from US drones
[Pak Daily Times] A purported al Qaeda leader in Pakistain says the terror network is losing territory and fighters amid a US drone strike campaign,
It is working, then. Well done, guys.
according to an audio message monitored by a US organisation that tracks turban propaganda.

The rare admission by Ustadh Ahmad Farooq follows an escalation in US missile hits against al Qaeda and Taliban targets in the tribal belt along the border with Afghanistan, as well as increased Mighty Pak Army operations over the last three years.

The authenticity of the audio recording could not be independently verified, but Farooq has released other messages.

The US-based SITE Intelligence group, which tracks turban websites and other media, described Farooq as al Qaeda's head of media and preaching in Pakistain. It said late Wednesday that the recording was released by Al-Sahab, al Qaeda's media arm.

SITE said Farooq spoke of the challenges facing al Qaeda in vague terms as part of a broader lecture on the need to keep faith in God during times of crisis. The 28-minute speech was released on jihadi forums on January 23, according to the US group.

"There were many areas where we once had freedom, but now they have been lost," he said. "We are the ones that are losing people, we are the ones facing shortages of resources. Our land is shrinking and drones are flying in the sky." Farooq spoke.

Third Pakistani was killed by responding American consulate vehicle
An employee of the US Consulate in Lahore shot dead two youths, while a third was crushed by the driver of a Parado, who was called by him for help, at Chowk Qartaba on Thursday afternoon.
Parado photos.
The American, identified as David Raymond, told police that two armed motorcyclists tried to rob him. He chased them and opened fire at them near Chowk Qartaba.

Police said one of the bikers died on the spot while the other succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

After the shooting, David made a rescue call and a team rushed to the scene in a jeep. Violating one-way traffic law, the jeep driver hit an innocent motorcyclist, who died on the spot. He sped away from the scene while police arrested David near Old Anarkali Food Street after a chase.
Good job, making a bad situation even worse.

#4  Guys, how many stories have there been here about motorcycle drive-bys? I think Raymond was showing situational awareness and likely saved his own life.

Screw the thugs of Jihadistan. Raymond likely deserves a ticker-tape parade.

#7  Rob Crawford, did you even READ the article? It has nothing to do with Raymond's actions. He called for help and a responding embassy vehicle went the wrong way down a one-way street and ran over a motorcyclist in its haste to arrive.

#8  Chasing people down and shooting them, for whatever reason, will get you in trouble anywhere. Pretty stupid thing for a consolate employee to do. Makes us look bad.

Ever been to the region? People there drive the wrong way down one-way streets ALL the time. Sucks to be the motorcyclist. Next...

#10  Grom, your article is one out of hundreds that claim he chased the men down. All other reports I read state he shot them as they were brandishing there weapons next to his vehicle.

#11  Could this have been a kidnapping attempt gone bad? Or could he have been carrying a diplomatic cable with names of informants?

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Al-Aqsa Martyrs point fingers at PA for assassination
[Ma'an] The Fatah-aligned Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades named names on Thursday, identifying four PA officials who they said were behind the 2005 liquidation of a leader within the hard boy wing.

Former Fatah strongman in Gazoo Muhammad Dahlan topped the list, along with PA security forces leaders Naser Yousef, Samir Al-Mashharawi, and Rashid Abu Shabak.

The four, Al-Aqsa front man said, were responsible for the death of Hassan Madhoun.

Speaking from Gazoo City, the hard boy wing leader called for a revolution Friday, and a "day of anger" against the "corrupted and the conspirators with the occupation."

Madhoun was > killed on 11 January 2005 along with a Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-affiliated Al-Qassam Brigades member Fawzi Abu Qaraan. The two were in a car with government license plates when they were hit. Resistance factions in Gazoo at the time vowed retaliation on Israel.

"There will be many chances to defend this crime," Al-Aqsa said, adding that a chance would be taken "in the coming days."

On Tuesday, Al-Jazeera and The Guardian leaked documents that quoted Israeli officials asking Paleostinians to assassinate Madhoun.

According to handwritten Arabic notes obtained by the Qatar-based news station, former Israeli Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz asked the former PA interior minister Nasser Yasouf to assassinate the fighter.

"We know his address ... Why don't you kill him?" Mofaz said. "He is not Hamas and you can kill him."

Later, Yousef answers that "We're working" on taking action against Madhoun and others. "The environment is not easy, our capabilities are limited, and you haven't offered anything."

Addressing the reports, the Al-Aqsa fighter said the brigades learned "noting new" from the leaked documents, but analysis of the report "proved the PA involvement in the crime."

PA officials have called into question the validity of the 1,600 documents which cover 10 years of negotiations between Israeli and Paleostinian officials, while others accused the satellite channel of pushing a political agenda and seeking to destabilize the West Bank.

Two Muslim men, aged 24 and 41, were killed in two separate drive-by shootings in the same province that day.

Another gun attack in Yala province on Thursday left a 35-year-old security volunteer dead at his home.

Five security volunteers wounded in Thai south blast
Five security volunteers in Yala province were wounded when an IED blew up early Thursday morning.

Police said the 3-5-kilogram IED was hung on an electrical post and when five security volunteers patrolling aboard a pick-up truck passed by, the attackers detonated the bomb. The electric post and vehicle were completely damaged.

Police officers blamed terrorists suspected separatists for the blast.

Monk, three soldiers injured in Pattani bombing
A bomb explosion injured one monk and the three soldiers escorting him during his morning alms rounds on Friday in Pattani.

The remote-controlled explosive device, weighing around seven kilograms, was hidden in an iron box and placed at a base of an electricity power pole. It was triggered by radio signal and blew up, injuring a monk from Lakmuang temple.

Pvt Kritsada Buaban recieved severe shrapnel wounds in his stomach and two others were injured and remain in the hospital.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hariri bloc not to join new Lebanon govt.
[Iran Press TV] The Western-backed coalition of Leb's caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri says it will not join the new national government.

Hariri's al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
(Future) Movement said on Thursday that it would not be part of the new government unless Prime Minister designate Najib Mikati, backed by the Hezbullies resistance movement, clarifies his position on US-sponsored Special Tribunal for Leb (STL), Rooters reported.

Mikati was elected as new Lebanese prime minister in a Tuesday vote on the second day of parliamentary consultations held in President Michel Suleiman's residence near Beirut. He collected 68 votes against Hariri's 60.

Leb has been in a political standoff since Saad Hariri's government collapsed earlier this month when 11 opposition-affiliated ministers resigned in a dispute over the US-backed STL -- which is charged with probing the liquidation of former Lebanese Premier Rafiq Hariri.

Rafiq Hariri and over 20 other people were killed on February 14, 2005, when explosives equivalent to around 1,000 kilograms of TNT targeted his convoy in downtown Beirut.

The Washington-sponsored STL was set up nearly two years later to look into the deadly incident.

Reports say that the court will likely issue an indictment against some Hezbullies members.

Hezbullies Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah has vehemently rebuffed the allegations, describing the move as part of a dangerous enemy scheme aimed at targeting the resistance movement.
