Egypt claimed Friday morning that it arrested twelve armed Palestinians on suspicion that they were planning to attack Israeli tourists vacationing in the Sinai, Israel Radio reported. An Egyptian security official said the group was arrested near the Rafah crossing and the Ahmad Hamdi tunnel, leading to Sinai coastal resorts.

According to the report, two of the men were Hamas members and two were Islamic Jihad operatives, and all but two of the detainees arrived at Sinai through the Rafah border crossing. The remaining two came to Egypt via Persian Gulf states.
A senior Egyptian diplomat told Saudi paper Al Wattan that Egypt offered Hamas to reach a ceasefire with Israel which would include the group eschewing firing rockets from Gaza to Israel. This was not the first such proposal, the diplomat told the paper. Reportedly, Hamas was also ready to call for new elections, on condition that they would include presidential elections and not only parliamentary elections.
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the Israeli embassy in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott early on Friday, police said. The attackers exchanged fire with guards at the embassy. A nearby bar in the centre of Nouakchott was also hit before the assailants fled.
The attack followed recent public calls by political parties in Mauritania, an Islamic Republic which straddles black and Arab Africa, for the government to sever diplomatic ties with Israel. The country is one of the few Arab League states to have relations with Israel.
Armed Mauritanian soldiers immediately cordoned off the embassy building. Emergency services initially reported some people were wounded in the shooting, but Israel's ambassador to Mauritania, Boaz Bismuth, said all embassy staff were unhurt.
"At 2.20 this morning, there was shooting at the Israeli embassy in Nouakchott. All the embassy staff, Israeli and Mauritanian, are safe," he told Reuters.
The attack came just weeks after the Lisbon-Dakar rally was cancelled due to fears of an armed Islamist threat in the West African country following two attacks in late December in which four French tourists and some soldiers were killed.
Islamic militants linked to al-Qaeda's North African branch claimed responsibility for these recent killings. "I have received many phone calls from Mauritanian friends who are very concerned. That is the only positive thing in a very sad night," Bismuth said.

Algerian security services have dismantled the terror group behind a pair of suicide bombings that killed 37 people, including 17 U.N. workers, Algeria's interior minister said Thursday.
The Dec. 11 bombings struck U.N. offices and a government building in the Algerian capital, Algiers. They were the most serious of a recent wave of attacks signaling that Islamic fighters are regrouping in the North African country.
Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni told The Associated Press that two suspects in the suicide attacks were killed and another two arrested. He did not give details. "Security services on Monday dismantled the network that organized and planted the bombs at the headquarters of the Constitutional Council and U.N. headquarters in Algiers," he said on the sidelines of a meeting in Tunisia of ministers from Arab countries.
The Algerian daily el-Watan, citing security officials, reported Tuesday that police had arrested four people in Boumerdes, east of Algiers, who were allegedly involved in planning the bombings. They were said to be preparing a new Algiers attack.
The newspaper also said a man described as a leader of the group in the Algiers area had been killed in an ambush.
Al-Qaida's North African affiliate claimed responsibility for the December bombings. The attacks raised concerns that al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa is intent on reviving a low-simmering insurgency that has wracked Algeria since 1992.

Nouakchott: Gunmen opened fire on the Israeli Embassy in the West African nation of Mauritania on Friday morning, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. The gunmen bravely fled after government guards fired back, the spokesman said. A bystander was shot, but no embassy employees were wounded, according to the ministry. The number of gunmen was not immediately known. Two witnesses told The Associated Press the shooting was done by a group of men shouting "Holy shit! God is Great!" in Arabic before opening fire about 2 a.m. As a whole, muslim terrorists are not very imaginative lot when it comes to what to say when spraying bullets or blowing themselves up, are they?
Predominantly Muslim Mauritania formally opened diplomatic relations with Israel in 2000 and is one of only three Arab League members to have done so, according to the U.S. State Department.

(AKI) -Yemeni al-Qaeda cell spokesman Ahmad Mansour has said that the government asked it to fight a Shia rebel group in the North of the country, local newspaper al-Wasat reported. "They [the government] have asked us to fight against the followers of Imam al-Houthi of Saada. In return, Yemeni security forces will ease the persecution of our members," said Mansour.
Mansour added that al-Qaeda members are present in various locations throughout Yemen and have always had contact with the government, through Sheikhs and tribal leaders. "Sheikh Osama bin Laden ordered us not to attack [the government] in the country and to combat only the communists, but the relationship with the government soured after the end of the war with Southern Yemen in 1994." said the al-Qaeda militant. Mansour added that the United States still was their number-one enemy and that attacks against tourists could be carried out.

Kyrgyz authorities have arrested an alleged member of a regional militant Islamic group linked to al-Qaida, the Interior Ministry said Thursday. Abdulkhai Yuldashev, 44, was arrested Wednesday in the southern town of Uzgen, said Interior Ministry spokesman Bakyt Seitov. Yuldashev led a group that received funding from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and was involved in attacks on Kyrgyz and Tajik border posts in May 2006, when gunmen broke through into Kyrgyz territory, killing nine people, Seitov said.

The bodies of militants killed in a missile strike in North Waziristan tribal agency were buried, and it is impossible to confirm or deny whether a top Al-Qaeda militant was killed in the incident, said the army Friday.
"We have no information as to who fired the missile, from where it was fired and how many people were killed in the strike," military spokesman Ather Abbas told KUNA. He said the bodies of dead people were immediately buried and it was impossible to confirm the death of leading Al-Qaeda operative, Abu Laith Al-Qassimi Al-Libi, among the killed militants.
A suspected US missile struck on a house in North Waziristan Monday night and killed 12 militants and three civilians. Earlier, tribal sources confirmed the killed militants were staying in the house for a few days, saying they were of Arab and Central Asian origins.
An Islamist website monitored by the US-based service, SITE, announced Thursday that Abu Laith Al-Qassimi Al-Libi, a Libyan Al-Qaeda operative and close aide of Osama Bin Laden, was killed in the strike.

Abu Laith al-Libi, a wanted al Qaeda terrorist, was killed in Pakistan by a CIA airstrike, three U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.
Al-Libi was described as a senior al Qaeda leader believed to have plotted and executed attacks against U.S. and coalition forces, including a February 2007 bombing at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney.
He was on a "most wanted" list of 12 accused terrorists which was issued in October by the Combined Joint Task Force-82 — an anti-terror unit in Afghanistan.
Earlier, a knowledgeable Western official and a military source confirmed al-Libi's death to CNN. The same official said al-Libi is "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" — Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The officials said al-Libi was killed by a missile from an airplane.
Radical Islamist Web sites announced al-Libi's death.
"May God have mercy on Sheikh Abu Laith al-Libi and accept him with his brothers, with the martyrs," said a eulogy posted on a main Islamist site, Al-Ekhlaas.
Al-Libi, 41, was of Libyan descent and was believed to have been in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region, according to the U.S. military.
A U.S. counterterrorism official told CNN he was a significant, senior al Qaeda figure who had taken on a more prominent role in the organization in recent years. This official also confirmed that al-Libi was responsible for plotting attacks targeting U.S. and coalition forces as well as Afghan officials.
In an earlier role, he was a leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which eventually merged with al Qaeda, the counterterrorism official said, and was responsible for planning attacks throughout North Africa and the Middle East. The official described al-Libi as part of al Qaeda's inner circle, who helped fill the void created by the capture or death of other senior people in the organization.
A U.S. military official with Combined Joint Task Force-82 said they have no information on al-Libi's death. But he added that CJTF-82 does not collect information from outside of Afghanistan, and would be informed of targeted operations only "if the Pakistani military share(s) that with us."
The Pakistani military said an explosion occurred in North Waziristan on Tuesday, and 12 people were killed. However, it was unclear whether this was the incident in which al-Libi was killed. Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told CNN it was not clear who attacked whom and that he could not comment on the identities of the dead since local al Qaeda and Taliban affiliates removed the bodies and buried them.
The U.S. military placed al-Libi on its most wanted list in 2006, behind bin Laden, al-Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar. In October, they announced rewards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 for al-Libi and 11 other mid-level Taliban and al Qaeda leaders.
At that time, the military distributed posters and billboards with pictures and names of the insurgents around eastern Afghanistan.
Al-Libi and the others were described at the time by CJTF-82 spokesman Maj. Chris Belcher as "mid-level bad guys."
He appeared in a 2002 audio recording posted on an Islamist Web site, saying al Qaeda had regrouped and intended to expand its war to include assassinations and attacks against infrastructure.
He also appeared in a 2004 video that showed him participating in an attack on an Afghan army base.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, the top Republican on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued a statement saying al-Libi's reported death would be "a positive development" in efforts against terrorism.
"Intelligence points to, and his [al-Libi's] increasing role in al Qaeda propaganda suggests, that he would have been a top field commander and planner for al Qaeda," Hoekstra said. "His death, if confirmed, clearly will have an impact on the radical jihadist movement."
He said that through the committee, he would monitor the effects on al Qaeda operations.

I don't keep track, but with their current rate of attrition Al Queer cant hold out for ever. Cannon fodder are probably easy to recruit at the local mosque, but leadership is hard to come by anywhere, for anybody. If we can manage to keep the pressure on them(pray for a republican in 2008) they can't last long like this. I'm sure there will always be an "Al-Qaeda" that does things that are a pain in the ass, but they won't be able to pull off anything major after a few more months of good hunting like this.

Three local Taliban commanders and five militants surrendered to the security forces after a peace jirga in Kabal tehsil of Swat district on Thursday. Sources said commanders Khalilur Rehman, Fazl-e-Kabir and Mumtaz were close aides of Fazlullah, the head of local Taliban in Swat. The militants also surrendered heavy weapons. Local elder Sher Muhammad Khan heads the Swat peace jirga. Also on Thursday, security forces fired artillery at the Malam Jabba tourist resort after being informed of the presence of local Taliban at the resort. Gunship helicopters also fired at northern parts of Matta tehsil. No casualties were reported.

Two alleged members of the banned Jundullah (AllahÂ’s brigade) were remanded to the custody of the Special Investigations Unit, Jamshed Quarters, till February 7 by Anti-Terrorism Court Administrative Judge Justice Khawaja Naveed Ahmed on Thursday.
The SIU police produced the accused amid heavy security Thursday afternoon and identified them as Muhammad Qasim Toori alias Hamza alias Haji Sahib and Abid alias Ali. According to the remand papers submitted by IO Sharique Siddiqui, the accused terrorists will be further interrogated for links to arms and other alleged criminals.
According to the complaint by Nijabat Hussain, police raided a house, No. 577/578 Sector 17-A, Shah Latif Town, where the accused opened fire at the authorities with the intent to kill. Two police personnel, DSP Asghar Dahiri and HC Raja Tariq, died as a result of the firing while HC Tariq Shah and Baber Zaki were wounded. The remand papers also show the recovery of 3 TT pistols, 25 hand grenades, Kalashikov rifles with 1,200 rounds, two rocket launchers and 12 rockets besides 28 kilograms of explosives with suicide jackets.

A roadside blast damaged a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) truck in Akora Khattak on Thursday, but there were no casualties, officials said.
They said that it was not immediately clear whether the vehicle, carrying three people, was the target. “A roadside bomb blast occurred when a truck was passing near Akora Khattak,” an air force spokesman told AFP. “The truck was damaged slightly and there are no injuries.” “It was a remote controlled bomb planted between two roads. At least five people were slightly injured in a bomb blast at a high security area in BalochistanÂ’s provincial capital on Thursday morning, Police said.
According to details, a bomb exploded at a bicycle parking stand outside the office of the Quetta district coordination officer (DCO), at around 11.30am. The bomb, which was reportedly homemade, had been installed on a bicycle.
The injured people were rushed to QuettaÂ’s Civil Hospital. Minutes before the blast, a large number of reporters and locals had gathered a few metres away from the district courts compound where lawyers were holding a protest.
Balochistan Deputy Inspector General Rehmatullah Niazi arrived at the spot and examined the damaged bicycle on which the bomb had been affixed. The blast occurred at a central location in Quetta and the residences of the Balochistan governor and the chief minister, civil secretariat are located around hundred metres away.

Security forces and political administration on Thursday recovered three truckloads of ammunition that militants had seized from troops in Darra Adam Khel last week. Political authorities told Daily Times that three of the four trucks hijacked by militants were seized in a raid in Kot Chaper. The troops also raided several militant hideouts, they said.
An ISPR statement said ammunition, batteries and other supplies were recovered from Tortsakpar, about one kilometre north of Kohat Tunnel. It said troops were protecting convoys travelling between Peshawar and Kohat. NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani told reporters that parts of the tunnel were seriously damaged after militants detonated an explosives-laden truck and a van inside it. ISPR’s Colonel Shahid confirmed that militants had damaged the tunnel, which he said would be reopened “in a few days”.
A local resident told Daily Times young Taliban were “roaming freely” in Darra Bazaar. He said militant commanders might have fled Darra Adam Khel via Khushal Gurh Bridge that links the area to the Attock district of Punjab. Taliban commanders might have fled to Waziristan, he said. Security forces stopped vehicles of displaced local people near Matani, but later allowed them to travel to Darra as a convoy via Kotal Road. Traffic is taking the longer Kotal Road route after the closure of the Kohat Tunnel. A police official at the Arbab checkpost said “hundreds of locals” were stopped for almost 8 to 10 hours. Residents of Darra staged a protest on Thursday against the relief camps set up by the government, saying they were getting no relief from them.

Pakistani intelligence officials are blaming a suspected U.S. missile strike for killing up to 13 foreign militants in the country's volatile North Waziristan region this week.
Who? Us? But that'd be a violation of Pak sovreignty...
The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, say at least one drone aircraft similar to those used by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was believed to have been involved in the attack.

They say seven Arabs and six Central Asians were killed in the strike which took place late Monday.

In other news, the Pakistani air force says a bomb exploded near a military truck in the town of Akora Khattak Thursday, but no one was injured. The air force said the truck was carrying three people and suffered slight damage.

I wonder why only $200k on his head? Either he was retail priced, or they figured that the locals couldn't grasp amounts of money greater than that; surprisingly, that is often the case.
There was even a lottery in the rural midwest US, that had a respectable payout, but was ignored by the public, until they changed the jackpot to a new pickup truck, worth far less than the cash. But it was a hit, because the locals appreciated a good pickup truck. Go figure.

Good point, 'moose. I've often thought we (U.S.) were making a mistake putting high dollar rewards on binny et al. The rubes in the back country wouldn't have a sense of 'dollars'. But saturate the area with leaflets promising '100,000 gold Dinars' (or some exchange medium they're familiar with) might generate more interest and leads.

(AKI) - US secret service agents operating in the remote border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan claim to have found five letters signed by al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, Saudi daily Al-Watan said on Thursday.
Citing unnamed local security sources, the newspaper said that the letters are allegedly handwritten in Arabic and bear Bin Laden's apparent signature and seal. They appear to have been sent last December to some of Bin Laden's followers in the region.
One of the letters is addressed to the Taliban leader in Afghanistan's volatile southern province of Helmand, Mansoor Dadallah. In the letter, Bin Laden reportedly offers condolences to Dadallah, the brother of Mullah Dadallah, late Taliban leader in Helmand, who was killed last year in a US air strike. After his brother's death, Mansoor Dadullah claimed he had received a letter from Bin Laden in an interview with satellite Arabic TV network Al-Jazeera. Mansoor spent several years in jail and was freed in March 2007 as part of a deal that secured the release of kidnapped Italian reporter Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who had been held by Taliban militants for two weeks.
The letter addressed to Dadullah also urges the Taliban to step up its attacks on NATO troops deployed in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Al-Watan reported.
Western intelligence agents are currently analysing the letters for evidence of any contact with 14 alleged members of an Islamic fundamentalist group arrested in anti-terror raids in the north-east Spanish city of Barcelona on January 19. Twelve Pakistani and two Indians allegedly belonging to Jamaat Al-Tabligh wal-Dawa (Society for Propagation and Preaching) were arrested in a series of police raids. Police said they had found bomb-related material during the raids and that the operation was aimed at breaking up an Islamist terror network.

Two mentally disabled women were strapped with explosives Friday and sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up by remote control, a top Iraqi government official said. That's going to make Allah happy for sure!
The bombs killed at least 98 people and wounded more than 200 at two popular pet markets on the holiest day of the week for Muslims, authorities said.
In both bombings, the attackers were mentally disabled women whose explosive belts were remotely detonated, Gen. Qasim Atta, spokesman for Baghdad's security plan, told state television.
An aide to Atta said that people referred to the bomber at central Baghdad's al-Ghazl market as the "crazy woman" and that the bomber at a second market had an unspecified birth disability.
The nationalities and identities of the women have not been released.
U.S. military officials referred to the two attacks as suicide bombings, saying both women detonated the explosive devices. The U.S. attributed the attacks to al Qaeda in Iraq and made no reference to the mental conditions of the women.
"By targeting innocent Iraqis, they show their true demonic character," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
"They care nothing for the Iraqi people; they want to subjugate them and forcefully create a greater Islamic sharia state," he said, referring to Islamic law.
One bomb blew up at al-Ghazl animal market around 10:30 a.m., killing 69 and wounding more than 140.
The second blast happened about a half-hour later in the New Baghdad neighborhood pet market, killing 29 people and wounding 67.
Al-Ghazl pet market is a popular destination where people buy and sell cats, dogs, monkeys and other animals. Attackers have struck the market on Fridays -- its busiest day -- several times in the last year or so.
A January 2007 bombing killed 15 and wounded 52 at the pet market, and 13 people died and 58 were wounded in a November attack.

On Thursday, a parked car exploded in a predominantly Shiite district in the Iraqi capital, killing five civilians and wounding eight others, the Interior Ministry said.

We need a large, freestanding concrete wall in Baghdad, with the caption "These people hate you, and want to blow you up". It needs to be lined with very large meathooks in a row, just under the caption. Find and hang terrorists on the meathooks, under the jaw. Let them stay there until they're nice and ripe. DO NOT let the families have them back for burial. Cremate the remains after they've hung for a week or two. The bleeding hearts will have kittens, but the people of Baghdad will be glad the hooks are in such frequent use.

I agree, but they are adults, and sticking their heads in the sand perpetuates the thing they hate the most rather than helping the brave ones make it go away with minimum suffering. And at times there will be suffering, whether the idealists have figured it out yet or not.

A female suicide bomber blew herself up at the main pet market in central Baghdad, killing at least 43 people and wounding 78, police said, the deadliest bombing to strike the capital since a U.S. troop buildup began over the summer.

I wonder if this is the 'retaliation' for zapping Abu Laith al-Libi the other day. Al Quaeda does have a track record of making some kind of big bloody mess as soon as they can after one of their 'bigs' gets hit. If so, then it should not be long before these blasts are found to be 'Bush's fault'.

An IAF air strike targeted on Thursday Kassam rocket launchers located in the northern Gaza Strip. The IDF confirmed that they hit the launchers, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties in the attack.

About 150 police, soldiers and Justice Ministry officials rounded up eight suspected terrorists from a village in this southern border province Friday morning.
The officials raided Buaraeng village in Tambon Laloh of Ruesoh district at 6:30 am to hunt for Sakariya Jaetaek, 18, whose identification card was earlier found at Nuradin mosque which insurgents launched an bomb attack against. The authorities did not find Sakariya but found the eight suspects.
Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, acting director of the Justice Ministry' Forensic Science Institute, who accompanied the raid, performed preliminary tests on the suspects and found traces of explosives. They were taken to the Narathiwat Taskforce 39 for questioning.
Government troops on Thursday swooped down the lair of Jemaah Islamiyah leader Dulmatin in Balimbing, Tawi-Tawi but failed to capture the notorious terrorist.
The military, however, was able to kill a certain Radi Upao, allegedly a sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf group who has a P2-million reward on his head for charges of kidnapping, serious illegal detention, and mass abduction, according to Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro. "Alias Dulmatin was able to escape," Bacarro said.
In a dzBB report, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police director Chief Supt. Joel Goltiao identified Upao as the killer of missionary Reynaldo Roda. No casualty was reported on the government side, Bacarro said. Roda, a member of the Oblate of Mary Immaculate, was killed Jan. 15 after he fought his abductors who were dragging him to a motorboat in South Ubian town, also in Tawi-Tawi province.
Dulmatin is a senior figure in the militant group JI and is one of the most wanted terrorists in Southeast Asia. He is believed to be with the Abu Sayyaf group since 2003 and was involved in providing explosive expertise and training other militants.

A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded marketplace in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday killing three people, and the air force bombed rebel positions also in far north, the military said. Thirteen other people, also civilians, were wounded in the blast in Thirunaweli in the northern Jaffna peninsula, where fighting between the military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has escalated in recent weeks. "The bomber arrived at the site riding a bicycle and exploded himself," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said. There was no immediate comment from the Tigers who have in the past denied attacking civilians.
The military also said air force fighter jets pounded a Tamil Tiger rebel suicide indoctrination centre in the rebel-held northern district of Mullativu. "The pilots confirmed the base was substantially damaged," said air force spokesman Wing Commander Andrew Wijesuriya.
Separately, five rebels were killed in ground battles on Wednesday in the northern districts of Vavuniya and Polonnaruwa, the military said. The clashes were the latest in a series of daily sea, land and air battles between the state and Tamil Tiger rebels, which have escalated since a six-year truce was scrapped on Jan. 16. An estimated 70,000 people have died in the two-decade conflict.

Bavi, Saki, Mazraa and al-Mansouri were convicted of 'armed insurrection' as were four other Iranian Arabs executed on 30 December.
