Afghanistan
Blast Hits Downtown Kabul
[Tolo News] An kaboom Tuesday hit Jaday-e-Maiwand area in downtown Kabul.

Officials said the bomb was placed in a traffic police car.

No one has been reported to be dead or maimed in the incident, but officials said three cars were wrecked in the blast.

This is the second Islamic exemplar attack in Kabul in the past three weeks.

Around two weeks ago Kabul was rocked by a suicide kaboom which occurred in a supermarket located in a diplomatic area.

The blast had led to the deaths of many civilians including members of a prominent Afghan family. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
's party had grabbed credit for the attack.

Insurgents usually use Improvised Explosive Devices to target government and foreign forces and they often suicide kabooms.

Foreign military commanders have anticipated a deadly spring ahead of their troops. Officials said the Taliban are likely to change their war approach by assassinating Afghan officials this year.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has recently said Nato's goals in Afghanistan are "achievable".

40 Militants Join Peace Process
[Tolo News] Nearly 40 Taliban fighters have surrendered to Afghan government in Ghor Province, local officials said.
Taking the winter off, or choosing to embrace the soft jihad of the law?
Nearly 40 Islamic fascisti including their commanders Mawlawi Zarif, Mawlawi Mohammad and Mawlawi Shafiqullah laid down arms and surrendered to authorities in Pasaband district of Ghor province on Monday, Abdul Hai, front man for governor of Ghor told TOLOnews.

The Militants' embracement of the Afghan government's peace call will improve security in the province, he added.

The surrendered men have also handed over their weapons to Afghan forces in Ghor.

The men said they have decided to make efforts to improve security in their province.

Taliban have not yet commented.

Recently Nato said that 900 Islamic fascisti have quit fighting and joined the Afghan grinding of the peace processor.

After Afghan and Nato forces' military operations in the country recently, dozens of hard boyz have started embracing the Afghan grinding of the peace processor.

President Karzai recently said at Munich Security Conference that the first phase of security transition would begin this year by March 21 which coincides with the Afghan new year.

The Afghan forces are expected to undertake full security responsibility by the end of 2014.
Will they all be able to read by then?

Iraqi al Qaeda calls for jihad against Egypt's government
The Iraqi-based segment of al-Qaeda called on Egypt's Muslims to free all prisoners from the jails and called for jihad as Cairo reported Islamists had already escaped during anti-government turmoil.

The Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) berated the Egyptian government for not implementing shari'a law, and said it was better for Muslims to die fighting the government than to live under its rule.

The ISI's "War Ministry" urged Egyptians to free more prisoners. "Don't rest until you have rescued them all, then destroy them (the prisons) with the aid of God, so that not a single stone remains standing," it said.

Calling for jihad against Egypt's government, the ISI declared: "If the people of Islam die trying to reach this goal, it is better for them than having a tyrant who rules them with laws other than God's Sharia law."

"Here is the market of jihad, and all the reasons to facilitate it in your home. The doors of martyrdom have opened."

Algerian troops kill AQIM communications chief
[Maghrebia] Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb communications chief Kamel Bouihane died Friday (February 4th) in a clash with Algerian soldiers and security forces, El Khabar reported. The top lieutenant to AQIM leader Abdelmalek Droukdel was ambushed while driving in the Bouira region. According to Ennahar, Bourihane, also known as Abu Hafs, helped plan al-Qaeda's April 11th, 2007 suicide kabooms of a government building in downtown Algiers and a Bab Ezzouar cop shoppe, as well as the Algiers UN office car booming and Constitutional Court attacks on December 11th, 2007.

Tunisia calls up army reserve to tackle violence
[Arab News] Tunisia asked military reservists to report for duty and warned police they would be fired for skipping work on Monday, in a new drive to restore order three weeks after an uprising overthrew the president.

Security officials in the coalition government put in place after President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali decamped to Soddy Arabia have said there is a conspiracy by officials close to the old administration to spread chaos and take back power.

After days of shootouts and looting immediately after Ben Ali was pushed out, it had seemed security was being restored but since last week violence has flared again, raising new questions about Tunisia's stability.

The military has for weeks been in the streets helping keep order and filling the gap left by a police force whose ranks have been thinned by desertions and absenteeism.

"The Defense Ministry has called on retired members of the army, navy and air force ... to go to the regional centers of conscription and mobilization nearest to their place of residence," said a ministry statement reported by the official TAP news agency.

Tunisia's uprising against Ben Ali's authoritarian rule inspired protest movements elsewhere in the Arab world, notably in Egypt, and its halting progress toward stability is being watched closely in the region.

In a separate statement, the Interior Ministry urged police to play their role in bringing back security.

Public respect for the police is low because many Tunisians blame them for carrying out acts of violent repression during Ben Ali's rule, and suspect them of trying to undermine the new government after he decamped.

"The Ministry of Interior calls on coppers to guarantee the security of the country and to act to help all those who ask their help in case of danger," the official news agency quoted the ministry as saying.

"In cases where police leave their workplace to answer urgent calls they must return as soon as the emergency is dealt with. If they do not return they will be considered as having left their job," the ministry said.

At least five people have been killed in violent incidents in provincial towns since Friday, including two rubbed out in the northern city of El Kef when police tried to disperse protesters.

There were no reports of any deaths or injuries on Monday but protesters clashed with police again in El Kef and set fire to buildings in the town, local media reported.

In the Tunisian capital, about 300 employees of the foreign ministry staged a protest rally outside their workplace to demand that the minister, Ahmed Ounaiss, step down. He had angered many Tunisians by lavishing praise on French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, who is under fire at home from opposition politicians who accuse her of having cosy relations with Tunisia's ousted administration.

297 killed in Egypt revolt, says rights group
[Arab News] At least 297 people have been killed since Egypt's anti-government uprising began two weeks ago, Human Rights Watch said on Monday.

The count is based on visits to seven hospitals in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez that included interviews with doctors and morgue inspections, said the group's Cairo researcher, Heba Morayef.

Egypt's Health Ministry has not given a comprehensive corpse count, though a ministry official said they are trying to compile one.

The revolt against Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak that erupted Jan. 25 brought days of fierce festivities. Protesters have clashed with police who fired live rounds, tear gas and rubber bullets and fought pitched street battles for two days with gangs of pro-Mubarak supporters who attacked their main demonstration site in Cairo's central Tahrir Square.

The violence has spread to other parts of Egypt and the toll includes 65 deaths outside the capital Cairo.

Morayef said the count is preliminary and is expected to rise. She said a majority of deaths were caused by live fire and in most cases, doctors were reluctant to release names. She said she did not have a breakdown of how many of the dead were protesters.

The researcher said she counted 232 deaths in Cairo, including 217 who were killed through Jan. 30 and an additional 15 who were killed in festivities between government supporters and opponents in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the protests, on Feb. 2 and 3.

In addition, 52 deaths were reported in Alexandria and 13 in the city of Suez east of Cairo, she said.

Protesters sing, dance to keep morale high
[Arab News] Two rows of men greet demonstrators at the main entrance to Tahrir Square, clapping as people enter, and chanting in the rhythms of a traditional Egyptian wedding procession.

"We are becoming bigger!" they shout. "God is Great!" Inside Cairo's main square, musicians stroll, a man reads poetry to the crowd and vendors hawk potato chips, tea, hot food -- even socks.

Tahrir Square, the scene of deadly battles with Molotov cocktails, rocks, horses and camels just last week, has taken on a carnival mood in the past few days as demonstrators try to establish an enduring presence, complete with food and entertainment, in their campaign to demand Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's ouster.

Fruit vendor Ashraf Gaber, 30, asked people to express themselves in a few words, then wrote their thoughts on pieces of A4 paper he placed on a stack besides him.

Volunteers added it to a collage that spread out before Gaber in a a series of rows held down by rocks.

"We have to make the people happy!" Gaber shouted.

"Express what is in your hearts!" he told the crowd.

"An Interior Ministry of Thugs!" read one. Nearby, crowds of young men and women cheered and sung as Fadi Mikhael, 29, strummed an oud -- or Arabic lute -- to a Western beat. "We won't be quiet! Raise your voice!" he sang on a stage, his voice amplified by four powerful speakers. The crowd clapped and repeated the chorus.

Poetry writing and recitation is a popular Arab pastime, a manifestation of pride in a language that's rich with subtle shades of meaning and unifies a people of different ethnic backgrounds and two major faiths.

There is a regional satellite television talent show just for poets -- with viewers in the millions -- and others dedicated to poets mocking each other in verse.

On another impromptu stage, a middle-aged man read poetry into a microphone as another crowd clapped at his ability to cleverly rhyme the stanzas.

"I am a peasant with a sheaf of wheat/I give it to the people generously," he read.
Wasn't Obama singing those lyrics when he passed the fruitcake out to the Chamber of Commerce the other day?
Nearby, demonstrators used stones, once used to repel pro-Mubarak supporters, to spell out slogans on the ground.

The command "Leave!" in Arabic spelled covered a few square feet (meters) of the square. The latest addition: "70 Billion" -- the Mubarak family's rumored wealth.

Vendors sold dates, plastic cups of hot tea, socks -- three pairs for $2 -- sesame-seed snacks, potato chips and juice.

Young men and women gathered in circles, debating the day's events. Before Jan. 25., Egyptians would not have dreamt of discussing politics so openly.

"We are learning a culture of respectful disagreement here," said Nashat Cross, 28, a Christian who works as a translator. "The level of cultured discussion is something I really admire." From time to time, somebody in the crowd would begin chanting anti-Mubarak slogans, and hundreds of others joined in, clapping.

Men sometimes shook their groove things bellydanced on the side to the rhythm of the chants.

Another procession of men stood at the exit, waving the red-white-and-black Egyptian flag, banging drums, blowing on harmonicas and singing, again, like an Egyptian wedding procession.

"You'll come back, wont you?" they chanted. "You'll come back to liberate us!"

Algeria reports new self-immolations
[Maghrebia] Three new Algeria self-immolation cases on Sunday (February 6th) raised the national total to more than ten since widespread protests over unemployment and high living costs began last month, Liberte reported. A man in his 40s attempted suicide during a protest outside the Labour Ministry in Algiers. The married father of three said his salary could not support his family. In Tlemcen, a man who lost his job as a municipal officer tried to set fire himself on fire at the wali offices. A 30-year-old also attempted self-immolation outside the municipal headquarters in Berrahal. The man, who has reportedly been engaged for years, could not get on the social housing eligibility list.

One of the suspected forces of Evil is reportedly linked to the Nouakchott suicide bomb plot foiled last week by Mauritanian soldiers. Al-Qaeda grabbed credit for the botched attack, saying that President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was the target. Tizi-Ouzou villages unite against kidnappings
[Maghrebia] Five Algerian villages on Saturday launched a local anti-terrorism crisis cell to monitor local security and confront abductions, Tout sur l'Algerie reported on Sunday (February 6th). The decision by village committees from Tazibt, Ait Mansour, Ighzer N'Bais, Azib Ahmed and Aït Hessane to mount a security partnership comes in response to the attempted kidnapping of an entrepreneur in Ihasnaouen. Over the last year, anti-kidnapping rallies, general strikes and protest caravans have won the release of several Tizi-Ouzou citizens kidnapped by terrorists.

Thousands surround PM office in Cairo
[Iran Press TV] Over 50,000 protesters have blocked newly-appointed Premier Ahmed Shafiq from entering his office in Cairo, calling for an immediate resignation by him and all of his cabinet members.

Shafiq became premier after embattled geriatric President Hosni Mubarak sacked the cabinet amid ongoing massive rallies against his regime.

Protesters dismiss the new designation and say they want Mubarak himself to give up power and stand trial for the death of protesters.

This comes as Egyptians are holding fresh protests across the country 15 days into their campaign to oust Mubarak.

Large crowds have gathered in Cairo's liberation Square. This as a large crowd of protesters have reportedly marched on the Interior Ministry and parliament buildings in central Cairo and surrounded them for a while before returning to Liberation Square.

The demonstrations come despite the government's promise of constitutional reforms and an offer of pay rise to public sector workers.

Vice president Omar Suleiman has also announced that the government has a plan and timetable for a peaceful transfer of power. Still the demonstrators insist Mubarak must resign immediately and that they're ready to draw more people to the streets until it happens.

On the Egyptian streets, people say they cannot trust the government, especially after what has transpired over the past two weeks. Anti-American sentiment is high among the protesters who hold Washington responsible for President Mubarak's long grip on power.

Suleiman: Mubarak Forms Panel to Pilot Constitutional Changes
[An Nahar] Embattled Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday formed a panel to oversee constitutional amendments, Vice President Omar Suleiman
... Vice president of Egypt. From 1993 until his appointment to that office in 2011 he was Minister without Portfolio and Director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (EGID)...
said, as anti-government protests entered their third week.

"President Mubarak today signed a decree for the formation of the constitutional commission which will oversee constitutional amendments, and required legislative amendments," Suleiman said in a statement read out on television.

"The president also tasked the prime minister with forming a "follow up committee" to implement the decisions taken by parties to the national dialogue, Suleiman said.

On Sunday, the newly-appointed vice president met with opposition groups, including the powerful Mohammedan Brotherhood, and independent political figures to discuss democratic reforms.

After the talks, the government said the parties had agreed to form a committee of judges and politicians "to study and propose constitutional amendments and required legislative amendments... by the first week of March."

Negotiators also agreed to open an office for complaints about the treatment of political prisoners, loosen media curbs, lift an emergency law "depending on the security situation," and reject foreign interference.

But Suleiman refused another key demand of the opposition, saying he would not assume Mubarak's powers and rule in his place during the transition.

"Mubarak has also ordered the formation of a third committee to investigate the festivities that took place on Wednesday," Suleiman said.

Massive anti-government protests that on Tuesday entered their third week, saw two particularly violent days on Wednesday and Thursday that left 11 people dead and scores injured.

Yemen Sentences Somali Pirate to Five Years in Jail
[Yemen Post] A Yemeni court in Aden sentenced on Monday a Somali pirate to five years in prison, and acquitted six others on piracy charges.

Mohamed Ali Saleh Eissa was accused of seizing a Yemeni boat in November of 2009 off the coast of Hadramawt province, and using it along with an unknown gang as a mother ship to prey on other vessels in the Gulf of Aden.

Six others were acquitted by the Yemeni court for the lack of evidences, after they proved to be innocent refugees. The pirates were nabbed by Yemeni coastguards in April 2010.

The verdict also included the confiscation of weapons and other seizures that were found on the board of the boat in interest of the State.

Last month, a Yemeni court in Hadramout province sentenced 13 Somalis to 12 years in jail each, after convicting them of piracy.

Yemen Tries Ten Suspected Al-Qaeda Militants
[Yemen Post] A Yemeni court specialized in cases of terrorism in Sana'a started on Sunday a trail of ten suspected Al-Qaeda turbans, including a Syrian suspect, on charges of blowing up the local office of Canada's Nexen Inc. in Hadda district, Sana'a in 2008.

They were also accused of being connected with attacks on domestic military, security forces, foreign interests and diplomats, a currency exchange bureau in Hodeida province in which they stole YR 650,000, and the 21-day kidnapping of the son of a Yemeni tribal leader.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 40 years of age, refused to answer questions from Judge Mohsen Alwan, who adjourned the hearing until Monday in order to interrogate them in pairs.

Suspected US spy drone crashes in Yemen
ADEN, Yemen — A suspected US spy drone crashed near the south Yemen town of Loder on Tuesday before Al-Qaeda gunmen made off with the wreckage, a police official and witnesses said. The drone crashed in Jahayn village near Loder, in Yemen’s Abyan province where Al-Qaeda has a strong presence, and was found by local residents, the official told AFP.

Witnesses said residents called in police, who collected the debris. But as they headed to a police station about 30 kilometres (18 miles) away, Al-Qaeda gunmen in cars intercepted the police and hijacked the wreckage. There were no reports of casualties.

The police official said the drone was a Predator, which is used for reconnaissance but can also be armed with missiles. The US military has widely used Predator drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he believed the drone was “monitoring the movements of Al-Qaeda partisans, who have a strong presence” in Loder.

The Washington Post reported in November that President Barack Obama’s administration had deployed unmanned Predator drones in Yemen to hunt for Al-Qaeda operatives. But citing unnamed senior US officials, the paper said US military and intelligence operatives have not fired missiles from the drones because they lack solid intelligence on the militants’ whereabouts.

Siblings of Moscow bomber arrested
Russian authorities have arrested three people in the Moscow airport suicide bombing that killed 36 people.

The bomber was identified as 20-year-old Magomed Yevloyev from Ingushetia but officials announced they had arrested his brother and sister on suspicion of helping him plan the suicide strike.

His siblings were identified as 16-year-old Akhmed and Fatima, whose age was given by various news agencies as either 12 or 22.

Also arrested was another 23-year-old alleged accomplice from the same village of Ali-Yurt. Police said this third person and the younger brother helped Magomed Yevloyev put together the bomb that went off at Domodedovo airport on January 24.

"They had traces of the explosive on them," an investigator told ITAR-TASS. "His relatives helped him prepare the explosive device and knew about his plans."

Doku Umarov has claimed credit for the attack, but Moscow officials have not commented on the claim and the rebel leader's name has not been mentioned on any state-controlled television stations.

China-Japan-Koreas
Koreas hold first military talks since island attack
(KUNA) -- Military officers from South and North Korea began preliminary talks Tuesday to lay groundwork for a higher-level meeting, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing a Defense Ministry front man.

The talks are the first between the countries since the North's deadly bombardment of a South Korean border island.

The talks at the border truce village of Panmunjom recessed as of 10:54 a.m. (0154 GMT) after nearly an hour-long morning session, Kim Min-seok, a front man at the South's Defense Ministry, said in Seoul.

The two sides resumed the talks at 2 p.m. (0500 GMT). "Both sides have been discussing the agenda and process for a higher-level meeting," Kim was quoted as saying. "The atmosphere was serious, and there were no political arguments from the two sides." The colonel-level talks are aimed at setting the date, place and agenda for higher-level talks, possibly at the level of defense ministers.

But the South's Defense Ministry said it won't agree to ministerial-level talks unless North Korea apologizes and takes "responsible measures" for the November 23, shelling of Yeonpyeong Island and the torpedo attack of a South Korean warship last March.

"Our stance has not changed," Kim told news hounds earlier in the day. "A higher-level military meeting will be possible only if North Korea takes responsible measures for the attacks on Yeonpyeong Island and the warship and promises not to carry out any more provocations." Tensions persist on the Korean Peninsula after the North's artillery strike on Yeonpyeong Island killed two marines and two civilians.

The bombardment came after a multinational investigation concluded that North Korea torpedoed a South Korean warship, killing 46 sailors.

North Korea has so far denied any involvement in the torpedo attack of the warship. The nation has also claimed that its artillery attack on Yeonpyeong was legitimate because the South provoked first by holding a live-fire drill near the island with some shells falling on the North's side.

#1  IMO the DPRK-ROK talks won't succeed unless China sees good or strong signs that the US will reduce or eliminate its mil presence in the Near-Term as per South Korea + Japan. IFF THE US DOES NOT, THEN EXPECT THE NORTH TO INITIATE NEW + WORSE PDENIABLE MIL INCIDENTS THAN "CHEONAN" + "YEONGPYEONG", IFF NOT OUTRIGHT MIL STRIKES AGZ US-ROK TARGETS.

Again, THE DPRK = NORTH KOREA WANTS TO STOP STARVING, WHIEL RISING CHINA WANTS SOLE BASE RIGHTS VEE THE "FIRST ISLAND CHAIN". In the absence of clear US Milfors withdrawal from East Asia region, IMO CHIna is unlikely to accept more than TOKEN = LIMITED NORTH-SOUTH ECON COOPERATION/INTEGRATION - THE TWO KOREAS CAN FORGET ABOUT RE-UNIFICATION. THE DPRK WILL GO ON STARVING.

American pleads guilty to jihad
An American accused in a plot "to advance violent jihad" abroad pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy to murder and other terrorism-related charges.

The Justice Department said Daniel Patrick Boyd, also known as "Saifullah," pleaded guilty in federal court in North Carolina to charges of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons in a foreign country. Boyd and seven others were charged in a federal indictment on July 22, 2009, and was arrested a week later.

Investigators say Boyd traveled to Af-Pak during the period from 1989 through 1992 "where he received military-style training in terrorist training camps for the purpose of engaging in violent jihad." After training, according to the indictment, he fought in Afghanistan.

From November 2006 until at least July 2009, Boyd "conspired with the other defendants to provide material support and resources to terrorists, including currency, training, transportation and personnel."

"The object of the conspiracy, according to the indictment, was to advance violent jihad, including supporting and participating in terrorist activities abroad and committing acts of murder, kidnapping or maiming persons abroad."

At the time of the arrests, authorities said Boyd was the mastermind of the group, which included two of his sons and that they "were were willing to die as martyrs."

Boyd will be sentenced in May. He faces a potential life term in prison for the murder conspiracy charges, with the rest of the charges carrying a potential term of 15 years.

Mahama Sulong, 58, and Koseeyoh Sulong, 49, were riding a motorcycle when two assailants on a motorcycle followed them and fired several times at them. Passers-by got them to hospital, where Mr Mahama later died. His wife, shot twice, was transferred to another hospital.

Also in Yala, two soldiers were injured in a bombing on Tuesday morning. 12 soldiers on motorcycles were escorting teachers when a five kilogram bomb, buried underground, exploded in on a district road. Fortunately, the bomb failed to function properly, so only two soldiers were injured.

Muslim mob attacks Indonesia churches: Police
[Straits Times] A MUSLIM mob burned churches and clashed with police in Indonesia on Tuesday as they demanded the death penalty for a Christian man convicted of blaspheming against Islam, police said.

Two days after a Mohammedan lynch mob killed three members of a minority Islamic sect, crowds of furious Mohammedans set two churches alight as they rampaged in anger over the prison sentence imposed on defendant Antonius Bawengan, 58.

A court in the Central Java town had sentenced the man to five years in jail, the maximum allowable, for distributing leaflets insulting Islam.

But this only enraged the crowd, who said the sentence was too lenient, police said.

'Today was the climax of the trial.... The mob shouted that he should receive the death sentence or be handed over to the public,' Central Java province police front man Djihartono told AFP.

'There are two churches that have been burned. The windows were shattered and the roofs were charred.... There is also another church that was damaged.' About 1,500 protesters erupted into the streets and pelted stones at the police, who responded with tear gas and fired warning shots into the air. One police vehicle was set ablaze, Antara news agency reported.

Philippine police extort laptops from tourist
[Straits Times] FIVE Philippine coppers forced a German tourist to buy them laptop computers by threatening him with false drug and terrorism charges, a police chief said on Tuesday.

The incident, which took place in Manila's upscale financial district of Makati, is the latest embarrassment for the country's police force.

Makati police chief Senior Superintendent Froilan Bonifacio expressed outrage and said the accused coppers may have carried out similar extortion scams in the past.

'I'm not just shocked. I'm angry, for God's sake. Maybe they have been doing this thing for years,' Mr Bonifacio told AFP.

The five coppers approached the German tourist at a Makati shopping mall on Jan 29 and initially accused him of buying counterfeit goods. When he denied this, they accused him of illegal drug possession, Mr Bonifacio said.

When this failed to scare him, the coppers threatened to arrest the German for supporting 'terrorism'. To prove his innocence, the coppers said he must buy laptops for their station, said the police chief.

Footage of deadly mob attack on Ahmadiyahs emerges
DISTURBING video has emerged of a bloody religious mob attack in Indonesia that killed three members of a minority Muslim sect, showing extremists beating and stoning their victims to death.

The incident, involving more than 1000 Muslims who stormed a house in West Java yesterday to stop the minority Ahmadiyah Islamic sect from holding worship, has been condemned by the government and rights activists.

Footage of the attack - which came at the start of "interfaith harmony week" in the mainly Muslim country - shows police doing nothing as scores of Islamic fanatics go berserk with stones, knives and sticks.
The police either were afraid to intervene or they were in full sympathy. Both, of course, is also an option...
Shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) and "kafir" (infidel), the mob brush aside a lone police officer and launch a sustained attack on the house, as a small group of Ahmadis try briefly to defend the property.

Defenceless and half-naked Ahmadi men are then shown being beaten and stoned to death in the mud outside the house. Their bodies are pelted with stones and desecrated as members of the mob laugh and take pictures.

Throughout the attack police are either absent or standing amid the mob doing nothing to intervene, with the exception of a lone police officer, who is seen attempting to stop people beating and stoning one of the dead men, but he is ignored.

National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said eight people are being questioned in relation to the violence but no one had been charged.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed police to capture the perpetrators and "haul them to court if need be", his senior adviser, Daniel Sparingga, said.
As opposed to what?
"The president is deeply concerned and condemned the violence and said that the country must be firm in defending the constitution, that would never allow small groups to use religion to attack groups of different faiths," he said.

Ahmadiyah spokesman Zafrullah Ahmad Pontoh said the mob committed murder and appealed to the government for protection. Similar appeals have been ignored in the past.

"We're saddened because innocent people were killed. The mob committed murder and Islam never taught people to attack and kill," he said. "We hope the government can provide us with protection so we can practise our faith in peace."

Indonesia's constitution explicitly guarantees freedom of religion and the country of some 240 million people, 80 per cent of whom are Muslim, has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

But a government decree adopted in 2008 under pressure from Islamic conservatives bans the Ahmadiyah sect from spreading its faith, which includes the belief that its founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, was the final Muslim prophet. Orthodox Muslims hold that Mohammed was the last prophet of Islam.

The group, which claims hundreds of thousands of members in Indonesia and millions in South Asia, has been repeatedly targeted with violence by Islamic extremist organisations.

National Human Rights Commission chairman Ifdhal Kasim said the incident was "embarrassing" as the police had made no effort to stop the mob.

"The police are biased and ignored their ultimate responsibility which is to protect the people," he said. "The government has no right to make judgments on whether a religion is heretical or not. Its job is to protect the people."

The violence comes less than three months after US President Barack Obama visited Indonesia and praised its "spirit of religious tolerance" as an "example to the world".
Once again Bambi blew it...
They were tolerant of him when he was there as a small child. How was he to know that his personal experience is not universal across space and time?

Indonesians Riot Over Failure to Execute Blasphemer
Article behind the subscription wall.
Hundreds of protesters burned churches and attacked a courthouse in central Indonesia Tuesday after a Christian convicted of blasphemy against Islam was given what they considered a lenient sentence. The rioting was the latest in a string of incidents that's raising fears about the influence of radical Islamic groups in Indonesia.

Antonius Richmond Bawengan, 58, was sentenced to five years in prison for handing out leaflets and books that "spread hatred about Islam".

Never let a good crisis go to waste.

Now do I understand correctly that Islam is a tolerant religion? Tolerant of what? Tolerant of everything the Holy Crayon doesn't give them direct guidance on? Which leaves basically nothing, I guess.

Maybe these guys didn't get the memo.
