-Lurid Crime Tales-
Purbo Banglars kill BNP leader, beautiful daughter
[Bangla Daily Star] Operatives of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) killed a local BNP leader and his daughter in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur yesterday.
We seen dis movie!
Of the two, Helal Uddin, joint secretary of Mujibnagar upazila BNP, was hacked indiscriminately, and he died on the spot around 7:00pm.
It had subtitles.
His daughter Kakoli Yasmin Mitu, 22, was fatally hit by shrapnel from three cocktails thrown at her when she went to save her father. She died at Meherpur General Hospital around 11:50pm, Mofazzel Hossain, superintendent of Meherpur police, told The Daily Star around 12:30am today.
"She's dead, Jim!"
In leaflets left on the scene, members of PBCP-Janajuddho faction have claimed responsibility for the murder of Helal, a village doctor by profession, reported our Kushtia correspondent.
"Leaflets at the scene, eh? Le Gume, I suspect Purbo Banglar Communists!"
Around 6:30pm, some 12 Janajuddho cadres stormed Helal's house in Ratanpur village shortly after he returned from Mujibnagar Bazar.
"Father! The Janajuddho cadres are attacking!"
"Bring me my prang, daughter!"

As they tried to get hold of Helal, his daughter Kakoli and wife came to his rescue.
"You shall not harm my father!"
But they stabbed Kakoli in the head.
"O-o-o-o-w!"
At one stage of the tussle, Helal ran out of the house only to be chased down by the attackers.
"Get him!"
Undeterred, his plucky daughter followed the gang but could not go far as they hurled cocktails at her, said Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mujibnagar Police Station, quoting the victims' family members.
"Ker-BANG!"
"Aaaiiieee! I am undone! Mukhtar, my secret love! Avenge me!"

"We have found a leaflet on the spot where Janajuddho leader Bikash Kumar said they killed Helal for not obeying their orders," said the OC.
"Helal's daughter! Sweet Kakoli! How I loved her! I must have... Dire Revenge™!"
Bikash, who claims to be operations commander of Janajuddho Khulna division, had been demanding hefty sums from Helal for a month. But the BNP leader refused to pay the money.
"Not one taka in tribute!"
The PBCP men had fixed Monday as the last date for him to pay.
"Yez'll pay up by Monday, Helal, or else!"
"Failing to get the money within that time, the outlaws threatened to kill him," Rabiul added.
"It's gonna be curtains for youse!"
Helal neither informed the police of the matter nor lodged any complaint against anybody, the officer said.
"I can't go to the police with this, daughter! If they discover I spent all the money the Chinese loaned the nation for the bridge while we were in power it's four gray walls for me!"
"But, Dad! You'd still be alive! We'd bring you lunch, every day!"
"You're a good girl, Kakoli. I'm glad I've turned away all your suitors and used you as a kitchen drudge! You're such a comfort!"

A special drive was on to arrest the killers.
"Yes! They murdered an innocent girl in the flower of her beauty! Oh, sweet Kakoli! If I wasn't a gangster she'd have been my bride!"
"Dere, dere, Mukhtar! We'll rub dem commies out!"
"[Sniff!] Youse guys are the best bahini ever!"

#1  Finally! The long-awaited Pre-quel to the infamous Zero-Dark-Thirty RAB raids on the heretofore unknown upazila, scattering multi-named miscreants to the far reaches of the universe, almost as if they had never been. Except for those within striking range of the equally infamous Shutter Gun.
Will we soon be reading the breathtaking conclusion to this heinous crime?
Will Dr. Quincy be called to evaluate the dearly (at least by his Mum) departed?
Will we finally find out that "Dammit Jim, I'm a drunk, not a Doctor?"
Stay tuned, Dear Reader.

Gunfire, bloodshed as hundreds clash outside Muslim Brotherhood HQ in Cairo
Hundreds of Egyptian protesters have encircled the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Cairo, attempting to break in. RT’s correspondent Bel Trew reports that protesters and Brotherhood supporters are clashing in Moqatam quarter around the HQ.

Earlier an Al Arabiya correspondent reported that protesters have already broke into the Muslim Brotherhood complex guarded by police and Brotherhood members, but the news has not been confirmed so far.

RT’s correspondent Bel Trew, who is at the scene, reports that hundreds are fighting each other with sticks and stones. She hears gunshots, but is unable to make out who is shooting at whom.

AP reports that there are about 3,000 anti-Muslim Brotherhood protesters rallying outside the group’s headquarters in Cairo. The number of defenders of the compound is estimated in the hundreds and only riot police that make desperate attempts to separate the parties prevent the compound from being captured. Police fired tear gas at the protesters storming the headquarters.

According to RT’s Bel Trew the situation in the Moqatam neighborhood is chaotic, as the frontline between protesters and Brotherhood supporters constantly moves back and forth. Ambulances are taking away people with severe head injuries evacuated from the scuffle. Many people on both sides are badly beaten.

“Blood everywhere. Gunfire continues. Still can't find out where from,” Bel Trew tweets.

#1  Hmmm,

Maybe this grand Muslim Brotherhood thing isn't turning out the way they thought it would.

Too bad, maybe living in a nonsecular world for so long the Egyptians are reacting to the possibilities of living under a reboot of the Taliban's crazy crap interpretation of Sharia...or maybe reacting to the reality of Sharia and understand, like Hegel and Marx, it makes great theory and very pretty debates in a classroom, but it just doesn't work when you plug it into the real world and have to account for the whims and vagaries of outrageous humanity.

Mali Soldier Killed in First Timbuktu Suicide Bombing
[An Nahar] A Malian soldier died in Timbuktu's first suicide kaboom as the city came under assault Wednesday night, after French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, and a fine job he's doing of it...
vowed a military operation to drive out radical Islamists from Mali was in its last phase.

The bomb went off as a group of gunnies, trying to force their way into the ancient city, exchanged fire with French and Malian soldiers who chased out the Islamists in late January.

"A boobytrapped car went kaboom! during the night (Wednesday) near the Timbuktu airport ... The jihadist who set off his belt was killed instantly and one of the soldiers injured in the kaboom died in hospital," said a military source on Thursday.

Two other soldiers were maimed in the kaboom.

Sources in the town reported sustained gunfire until about 3am (local and GMT) on Thursday morning.

"Since last night we have been hearing gun shots in Timbuktu. There was an attempted infiltration and shooting broke out," a local government official told AFP.

"A vehicle carrying armed people tried to enter Timbuktu by force on Wednesday night and French and African soldiers retaliated," a security source in the town said.

Cyprus Convicts Hizbullah Man over anti-Israel Plot
[An Nahar] A Cypriot court on Thursday found guilty a self-confessed Hizbullah militant who had been accused of involvement in a plot to attack Israeli interests on the Mediterranean island.

Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, a dual Lebanese and Swedish citizen arrested in the port of Limassol in July last year, was found guilty on five counts -- including participating in a criminal organization, taking part in a criminal act and money laundering.

"Any logical explanation that could present these actions as innocent ones is completely lacking," judges in the Limassol criminal court said
"Any logical explanation that could present these actions as innocent ones is completely lacking," judges in the Limassol criminal court said in an 80-page decision on how they reached their verdict.

"The purpose of Hizbullah in connection with the actions of the accused, constitute a criminal organization in this regard... based on the specific actions of the accused in Cyprus," the decision added.

The 24-year-old said he had been asked to log information on Israeli flight arrivals in Cyprus and jot down the number plates of buses carrying tourists from the Jewish state. He said he was unaware what the information was for.
Yaacoub, who faces a sentence of up to 14 years in prison, was however cleared of three charges pertaining to conspiracy to commit a crime because they were covered by the other offences.

The court will reconvene on March 28 to hear mitigating arguments and for sentencing.

Yaacoub told the court last month he had collected information on Israeli tourists visiting the island, but denied plotting to attack them.

The 24-year-old said he had been asked to log information on Israeli flight arrivals in Cyprus and jot down the number plates of buses carrying tourists from the Jewish state.

He said he was unaware what the information was for and was arrested last July before he could communicate the information to a handler, whom he did not know, in Lebanon.

U.S. Drones Kill Four in Pakistan
[An Nahar] U.S. drones fired two missiles at a vehicle in Pakistain's northwestern tribal belt Thursday, killing four bad turbans, security officials said.

The attack took place in Datta Khel town, 35 kilometers (22 miles) west of Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
, the main town in the lawless North Wazoo region, which borders Afghanistan. The area is a stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked bad turbans.

"Four drones came to the area around midnight and fired two missiles targeting a bad turban vehicle," a local security official said.

"At least four Islamic fascisti were killed, their vehicle was blown up," he said.

Another security official in the northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, which lies on the edge of the tribal region, confirmed the attack and the casualties.

The covert strikes are publicly criticized by the Pak government as a violation of illusory sovereignty but American officials believe they are a vital weapon in the war against Islamist bad turbans.

Gaza Hardline Islamists Claim Rocket Attack
[An Nahar] A hardline Islamist group claimed a rocket attack against southern Israel on Thursday, in a statement that condemned a historic visit by U.S. President Barack Obama
Republicans can come along for the ride, but they've got to sit in the back...
to the region.

In a statement headlined "The demolition of Sderot by rocket bombardment in reaction to the visit of the dog Obama," the Salafist Aknaf Bayt al-Maqdis group said it was responsible for an attack launched from Gazoo.

Two rockets hit southern Israel, one landing in the town of Sderot on Thursday morning before Obama traveled from Jerusalem to the West Bank city of Ramallah for talks with president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, leader of the Paleostinian Authority.

Aknaf Bayt al-Maqdis (The Guardians of Jerusalem) "declares its responsibility for the rockets fired towards the Zionist violator Sderot this morning March 21 2013," the statement said.

Israeli officials had blamed Thursday's rocket attacks on Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, Abbas's rival movement that governs the Gazoo Strip.

But the Islamist Hamas implicitly denied responsibility.

Spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri
...a senior spokesman for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gaza. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest...
told Agence La Belle France Presse Hamas "considers talk of rocket fire to be merely Israeli accusations aimed at gaining sympathy from Obama... and inciting him against Paleostinians."

10 dead, mosques torched in Myanmar riots
MEIKTILA (MYANMAR) — At least 10 people have been killed in riots in central Myanmar, a local MP said on Thursday, prompting US concern at the worst communal unrest since Buddhist-Muslim clashes in western Rakhine state last year. Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising above the town of Meiktila as buildings were set ablaze in a second day of fighting in the area, where several mosques were reported to have been torched.

The United States said it was “deeply concerned”
...every bit as concerned as the UN, mind you...
by the unrest, which according to police erupted on Wednesday after an argument in a Muslim-owned gold shop intensified and caused about 200 people to fight in the streets.

Win Htein, a member of the opposition National League for Democracy party, said he had seen bodies at the scene of fresh clashes on Thursday.

“More than 10 people were killed,” he told AFP from the town, which is his constituency seat.

Communal conflict in Rakhine has left at least 180 people dead and more than 110,000 displaced since June 2012, overshadowing international optimism about the country’s widely praised political reforms since the end of military rule two years ago.

A curfew was put in place overnight but witnesses said fighting erupted again on Thursday morning. A local resident, who asked not to be named, said he had seen “many dead bodies”.

“The situation is getting worse. The police cannot control the people,” he said. The local hospital said it had attended to five dead and 25 wounded.

“Two died from burn injuries and the other three were killed because of wounds sustained from knives and sticks,” a hospital official said, asking not to be named.

Police said several mosques were destroyed and a Buddhist monk was among two killed on Wednesday, but they did not give an updated toll for Thursday. Ko Ko Gyi, a member of the 88 Generation political activist group who travelled to Meiktila on Wednesday, said he saw fighting between the local communities and homes torched.

“People from both communities are leaving their houses because they are afraid that they could be attacked,” he said by telephone.

Myanmar’s Muslims — largely of Indian, Chinese and Bangladeshi descent — account for an estimated four percent of the roughly 60 million population, although the country has not conducted a census in three decades.

Muslims entered Buddhist-majority Myanmar en masse as indentured labourers from the Indian subcontinent during British colonial rule which ended in 1948. But despite their long history, they have never fully been integrated into the country.

Pockets of sectarian unrest have occasionally broken out in the past across the country, with Rakhine state a flashpoint for tensions. Since violence broke out there last year, thousands of Muslim Rohingya boat people — including a growing number of women and children — have fled the Rakhine conflict in rickety boats, many heading for Malaysia.

Win Htein said there were around 30,000 Muslims in Meiktila out of a total population of around 80,000 but no similar clashes had happened in his lifetime.

Syria: 14 dead in bombing that kills top preacher
[USATODAY] A suicide bomber blew himself up during evening prayers inside a mosque in Damascus Thursday, killing a top Sunni Muslim preacher and longtime supporter of President Bashar Assad and least 13 other people, state TV reported.
The guy's 84 years old, and he's murdered by a suicide boomer.I shall dance the Dance of Sneering Revulsion.
The assassination removes one of the few remaining pillars of support of the Alawite leader among the minority sect that has risen up against him.

Sheikh Mohammad Said Ramadan al-Buti, an 84-year-old cleric known to all Syrians as a religious scholar who appears often on TV, was killed in the explosion in the Eman Mosque in the central Mazraa district, according to the report.

Syrian TV showed footage wounded people and bodies with severed limbs on the blood-stained floor of the mosque and later, bodies covered in white body bags lined up on the mosque's floor. The explosion occurred at a time the mosque would have been packed with worshippers for Friday evening prayers.

Assad Sympathizers Hack BBC Twitter Account
[ABCNEWS.GO] The BBC came under attack from hackers sympathetic to Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday and warned its staff about attempts to compromise the broadcaster's email network.
"Mahmoud! Call up the 332nd Scriptkiddy Brigade!"
"Jawohl, your Immensity!"

Shortly after Assad supporters hijacked several BBC Twitter accounts to post messages that were by turns political, anti-Semitic and comical, the broadcaster said that "phishing" links -- typically fake emails aimed at stealing information -- are being sent around the BBC.

"If you receive these emails it is very important that you do not click on the link," the BBC said in an email to staff that was obtained by the Associated Press.
"If you do click on it everyone will know you're a dork."
It was not immediately clear if the Twitter hacks and phishing emails were related.
It was not immediately clear if Cesare and Lucretia were related.
The BBC's email to staff said the "phishing" emails contained what appeared to be links to The Guardian newspaper or Human Rights Watch online and bring users to a fake webmail portal.
When you go to click a link, hang your mouse over it for a second or two. The destination will be displayed in the lower left hand corner of your browser. If it's not what the message purports to be drop the message in the trash.
"It is very important that you do not enter your details into this page," the BBC email said, adding that the company has shut down non-authenticated webmail.

One Dead, Several Hurt as Sniper Gunfire Renews in Tripoli
[An Nahar] A man was killed and several other people were wounded on Thursday as sniper gunfire renewed in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh and other frontiers in the northern city.

"Sniper fire intensified on all frontiers in Tripoli and residents are fleeing some areas en masse as lights were totally switched off," Radio Voice of Lebanon (100.5) reported.

The casualties happened near Khalaf Supermarket, state-run National News Agency said.

In remarks to Agence France Presse, a security source identified the dead man as Moatassem al-Shamra, 26, who was killed in an exchange of fire in the Qobbeh neighborhood that also wounded two others.

Two more people were injured by gunfire in Bab al-Tabbaneh, the source said, adding that a soldier had also been wounded in the city, but it was unclear where.

VDL (100.5) said a meeting for the leaders and clerics of Bab al-Tabbaneh was underway in Harba Mosque.

Army Arrests Main Suspect in Tripoli Hospital Shootout
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army said on Thursday that it arrested a main suspect in a shooting on a soldier at the state hospital in the area of al-Qobbeh in the northern city of Tripoli.

"Following a series of raids a military force arrested at dawn one of the main suspects of the shooting," an army command communique said.

It identified the suspect as Jihad Dandashi.

The communique said he is being interrogated under the supervision of the judiciary and that the army is searching for the rest of the suspects.

The army said on Wednesday night that the soldier was wounded along with his brother when gunmen entered the hospital and opened fire at him.

A third person was also wounded in the incident, it said. Media reports later said the man succumbed to his injuries.

The shooting later expanded into an exchange of fire between the residents of rival neighborhoods Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh, the army added.

Frequent clashes between the two areas have left dozens of casualties. The majority of Bab al-Tabbaneh residents are Sunni and back the revolution against Syrian President Bashar Assad while Jabal Mohsen's residents are mainly Alawites from Assad's sect.

Syria Releases Lebanese Salafist Seized in Tall Kalakh Ambush
[An Nahar] Syria released on Thursday a Lebanese Salafist who had been seized in an ambush by Syrian regime troops in the town of Tall Kalakh near the border with Lebanon last year.

Hassan Srour was handed to Lebanon's General Security, which said in a communique that his release came as a result of contacts between the department's chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim and Syrian authorities

There has been a discrepancy on the number of fighters who infiltrated Tall Kalakh last November to fight alongside the rebels. But reports said they numbered 21.

According to the reports, several of them had sought refuge with the rebel Free Syrian Army while around three others had been arrested by regime troops.

The spokesman of the families of the fighters, Sheikh Mohammed Ibrahim, said in December that several of the fighters hadn't returned to Lebanon, including Srour, who was held captive by regime troops, while another identified as Mohammed al-Rifai was missing.

Syrian authorities handed over to Lebanon in several rounds in December several bodies of the Salafists killed in the ambush, including a Palestinian. Also among them was the body of Hussein Srour, Hassan's brother.

"But clashes broke out. I fled like a rabbit but later in the morning I was arrested"
Ahead of his transfer to Lebanon, Srour told Syrian TV that Salafist cleric Sheikh Dai al-Islam al-Shahhal had asked the Salafists to head to Syria to fight regime troops.

But al-Shahhal denied the accusations, saying the Syrian regime had forced him to make such a claim.

The cleric created controversy earlier this month when he allegedly threatened to issue a fatwa that calls for Jihad.

But he later denied his threat, saying he didn't specify the nature of the fatwa.

Srour said the group had went to the neighboring country "to fight the Syrian army."

"We came from Wadi Khaled (in Lebanon) towards Syrian territory, carrying bombs and machine guns. We crossed the border at night. In Syria, a young Syrian man called Abu Omar was waiting for us," he said.

"At dawn, Abu Omar called people to bring us food and drink, then we headed off in the direction of Qalaat al-Hosn (in Homs province," added Srour, who sported a full beard and long hair.

"But clashes broke out. I fled but later in the morning I was arrested," he added.

Syria Rebels Gain Ground in Golan Heights
[An Nahar] Syrian rebels have gained ground in the Golan Heights, which is partly occupied by Israel, launching coordinated attacks in the area and in nearby Daraa province, a watchdog said on Thursday.

"It appears that the rebels launched coordinated attacks on multiple parts of the Golan, taking control of areas and villages in the province of Quneitra," Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence France Presse.

Overnight, the Observatory said, "rebels took control of the Mashati al-Khodr and Dawar Khan Arnaba regions, as well as artillery bases" after heavy fighting in Quneitra province.

"Violent clashes have also been underway since this morning in the areas of Sahem and Wadi al-Yarmuk" in Daraa province, in southern Syria, the group said.

Rebels seized an officers' club in Jaline village, "after the withdrawal of soldiers," while regime forces shelled the town of Sahem al-Jolan.
