Afghanistan
Fighters kill police in Afghanistan
Nine police have been killed by suspected Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan, interior ministry sources say.

The ministry said the officers were attacked at a police checkpoint in Nahri Sarraj district of Helmand province on Thursday. "Nine hero policemen were martyred in the cowardly attack by the enemies of Afghanistan," a ministry statement said.

The phrase "enemies of Afghanistan" normally refers to Taliban fighters.

The ministry said an operation had been launched to hunt down the attackers.

Elsewhere in the south, police sources said Taliban fighters ambushed a police convoy carrying a Taliban detainee to the city of Ghazni, injuring seven policemen.

The main police building in Lashkar Gah, the administrative capital of Helmand, was attacked earlier this month and at least 11 people were killed.

#4  Obama must be trying to show he has the balls to fight. This and the report on more troops leaves me to believe his people finally read the reports. I bet he regrets all that crap he said during election. He is caught in an interesting trap. He preached to the cool aid crowd to get elected and now he has the fate of the free world in his hands. Bet he's not sleeping well.

I have always said here on the berg that the Sudan is a center of gravity in this war and when we play this war to win we will end up fighting in the Sudan. Damn Rumsfeld for not doing this sooner!

Pirates seize tankers off Somalia
Pirates have seized two European-owned tankers off the coast of Somalia in the past day, officials have said. The Greek-owned vessel Nipayia, with 19 crew on board, was seized on Wednesday, the Nato Shipping Centre said.

The Norwegian-owned tanker Bow Asir was captured by pirates on Thursday. It had a crew of 27 on board, the Norwegian Shipowners' Association said.
According to a related article in the Times Online, the Norwegian ship was 250 miles and the Greek ship was 450 miles off the coast. That's a good ways off the coast. They need a stout mother ship that can stay out at sea for quite a while. And they need good intel. Wonder where they're getting it?
The 23,000-tonne Bow Asir, which is registered in the Bahamas, is reported to be a chemical tanker. It is not known what cargo it was carrying at the time of the hijack. Polish foreign ministry spokesman Piotr Paszkowski said the ship's Norwegian owner had informed the ministry that five sailors on board were Polish, the Associated Press news agency reports. The vessel has a Norwegian captain, the Norwegian Shipowners' Association said. It is believed to have been seized by a group of 16 to 18 pirates.

The 9,000-tonne Nipayia was captured about 450 miles from the southern Somali port of Kismayo, a spokesman for the EU Naval Force (EU Navfor), told the BBC. The crew in both hijacked vessels were believed to be unharmed, the spokesman said. The Nipayia has a Filipino crew, according to the website of the EU's Maritime Security Centre.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia: Senior al-Qaida leader surrenders
Saudi Arabia says a senior al-Qaeda leader has returned to the country voluntarily and turned himself in.

The Interior Ministry says Fahad al-Ruwaily was on a list of the kingdom's 85 most wanted militants living abroad. Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki said he returned to Saudi Arabia Wednesday, but he refused to give more information.

A news Web site close to the ministry said Thursday that al-Ruwaily was a key figure in al-Qaida training camps along Syria's border with Iraq. The Doaa Web site said he provided fighters with weapons and forged travel documents to help them enter Iraq from Syria.

The Saudis appealed in February for 85 suspects to surrender, offering to reunite them with their families after rehabilitation.

Bangladesh
NGO founder's arrest still not made official
The law enforcement agencies yesterday denied arresting British citizen Faisal Mostafa, alleged patron of the militants' den busted in Bhola, while his relatives in Dhaka and Manchester claimed he has been detained since Wednesday.

"My relatives in Dhaka called me around UK time 7:00am Wednesday (1:00pm local time) and said my son has been detained in Dhaka," Faisal's father Golam Mostafa told The Daily Star last night.

Over phone from Manchester, he also talked about how his son manages funds for his charity Green Crescent that runs the madrasa-cum-orphanage by the same name, where the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) unearthed a mini-munitions factory Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Faisal has not yet been named accused in any of the two cases filed in connection with the recovery of firearms, ammunition and explosives from Green Crescent madrasa.

Golam Mostafa, who visited the Islamic seminary in Ramkeshob village under Borhanuddin upazila in January, claimed it is only an orphanage. He said his son would send money for the organisation through Manchester branch of state-owned Sonali Bank. The funds would be deposited in two accounts with Doulatkha branch of Sonali Bank.

Badal, Alam and Humayun operate the accounts in Doulatkha.

"Time and again, I've asked my son to maintain one account," Mostafa said. He said the last time he talked to his son was three days back. Faisal told him he was in Dhaka. "I think he knew nothing about Rab's weapon haul at the orphanage in Bhola."

He found his son's cellphone switched-off when he tried to reach him after learning about his 'arrest'. Most probably, he continued, the law enforcers have taken away the phone.

Europe
Italy: Two deported for planning to blow up dam
Moroccan Mohamed Essadeck, from Gaiarine (Treviso), and Tunisian Miri Sghaier, from Manzano (Udine), were deported this week by Minister of the Interior Roberto Maroni for being a danger to national security. The Italian security services intercepted calls between the two and others in North Africa where they planned to blow up the dam in Tramonti in Friuli. Additionally Essadeck spoke of recruiting for al-Qaeda.
Deported? In the USA that gets you prison, preferably in a Supermax.
The two expected that blowing up the dam would cause a disaster similar to the flooding during the Vajont Dam disaster of 1963. Close to 2000 villagers were killed then. The expected flood would have swept the villages of Meduno, Sequals, and Spilimbergo.

The two had been followed around the clock and it was determined that they had moved beyond statement of intent and into deeds. However, no proof was found of reconnaissance missions or other concrete actions and so the investigation was closed.
Islam in Europe is a new-to-me site. They link to an Italian paper and also to this German blog (Google Translate link), which has a nice picture of the infidel dam of doom.

Home Front: WoT
Gitmo inmates may be released in US: intel chief
President Barack Obama's intelligence chief confirmed Thursday that some Guantanamo inmates may be released on US soil and receive assistance to return to society.
So let's give them some welfare money! Perhaps a Section 8 housing voucher as well. We're emulating the Brits. Next comes an apology ...
"If we are to release them in the United States, we need some sort of assistance for them to start a new life," said National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair at his first press conference. "You can't just put them on the street," he added. "All that is work in progress."
We can't put 'em on the streets, but we could put 'em in a Supermax. Or in the middle of the ocean ...
Blair told reporters that the review of Guantanamo cases was still underway, and that the government was "building dossiers on each of the detainees."

The Obama administration is currently evaluating what could be done with the prisoners, he said, but pledged that if they are sent to another country, "we have to be sure that that country will treat them in a humane fashion."
In other words, we have to prevail upon the Chinese, Algerians, Saoodis, etc to treat them better than the terrs would treat any of us.
Twenty men detained at the remote US naval base at Guantanamo Bay in southern Cuba have been cleared of terrorism charges, including 17 Chinese Uighurs ordered released by a US court in June, seven years after their arrest. But the US says they may face persecution if returned to China.
What exactly is the evidence for that? They may not be masterminds but they are indeed terrorists. If they weren't aimed at us they're certainly aimed at the Chinese -- they're pledged to bring down the Chinese government. Why would anyone expect the Chinese to treat them gently?
In an executive order signed days after he took office in January, Obama also promised to uphold the Geneva Conventions for the remaining prisoners until the detention center is closed.
Which should mean we shoot them since the terrs specifically aren't covered by the said same Conventions ...
Blair touched on the controversial interrogation techniques used on terror suspects under the administration of president George W. Bush, saying that those methods -- including waterboarding, or simulated drowning -- would not be used under his tenure.

But Blair, a retired US admiral, added that his team was examining other "enhanced interrogation techniques" for high-value detainees that comply with international conventions on prisoners of war. He did not elaborate on what methods would be used, but said such interrogations should be carried out by "government employees; they shouldn't be contractors; they should be highly trained, very supervised."

Today's Pakaboom kills 11 in Tank
A suicide bomber struck a restaurant in volatile northwest Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 11 people including militants opposed to the country's top Taliban commander, intelligence officials said.

Pockets of northwest Pakistan are strongholds for Taliban, al-Qaida and other militant groups, not all of whom get along.

Even as Pakistan has battled the extremists and the U.S. has carried out dozens of missile attacks against the militants - including a suspected American strike that killed eight Wednesday - the armed groups have also attacked one another.

The attack Thursday morning occurred just outside the South Waziristan tribal region near the town of Tank at a roadside restaurant where some two dozen militants loyal to Turkistan Bittani were eating, two intelligence officials told The Associated Press.

Several other people were wounded in the attack, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to the speak publicly to the media.

Bittani was not present. South Waziristan is the stronghold of Baitullah Mehsud, a Bittani rival.

The tribal region also was the target of Wednesday's alleged U.S. missile strike, whose death toll included several foreigners, according to two other intelligence officials said. Wednesday's strike damaged two vehicles near Makeen, a town that borders Afghanistan.

The strike came as President Barack Obama's administration prepares to unveil a new strategy to quell Islamist insurgents threatening Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan.

American officials have indicated that attacks along Pakistan's un-policed western frontier, apparently carried out by unmanned CIA aircraft and stepped up since last year, will continue despite protests from the Pakistani government.

The officials discussed the missile strike on condition of anonymity because they also were not authorized to speak to the media. Reporters cannot verify reports from the area because authorities and militants limit access.

U.S. officials say the strikes have killed a string of militant leaders and put al-Qaida on the defensive in an area considered a possible hiding place for its fugitive leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri.

However, the Pakistani government argues that the tactic is counterproductive because it kills civilians, stokes anti-American feeling in the Islamic world's only nuclear-armed country and undermines its own efforts to isolate extremists.

Saudi terror recruiter nabbed in Diyala
Iraq's army has detained a Saudi member of the insurgent 'Islamic State of Iraq' on charges of recruiting gunmen in the Diyala province.

"Today, an Iraqi army force conducted a raid on a main al-Qaeda stronghold in central Baquba city, during which a Saudi leader of the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq', Mohammed Abdullah al-Hassan, nicknamed Abu Salman, was captured," an Iraqi intelligence official, Ziyad al-Aani, told Voices of Iraq, on Thursday.

Aani said that Saudi and Iraqi authorities had been hunting al-Hassan since 2004 -- who they allege has been recruiting Arab gunmen in Iraq.

Diyala, in central Iraq, is considered one of the most dangerous areas of the country, where al-Qaeda and various insurgent groups still manage to launch attacks against Iraqi forces and civilians.

Israel successfully tests Iron Dome rocket defense system
The Defense Ministry said on Thursday it had successfully completed a series of tests of the Iron Dome rocket defense system. The ministry said the system is aimed at protecting the residents of the South and North from attacks. It said a number of rockets and missiles had been hit in the tests.

In about four months' time, the Israel Defense Forces will establish a battalion in its anti-aircraft division to operate the Iron Dome system.

Defense officials predict that the system will be up and running by next year and will protect 95% of people in the area around Sderot and Ashkelon from rockets and mortars fired from the Gaza Strip.

The defense establishment recently acquired rabbinical approval for workers from Rafael, the Israel Arms Development Authority, to work on Saturdays and conducts the tests 24 hours, seven days a week.

The announcement of the successful tests comes just a few weeks after the State Comptroller released a report predicting that the project was still far from completion. The report, released at the beginning of March, said the project had been hindered by financial waste and bureaucratic problems.

In 2007, the government approved funding for the system, which is designed to intercept short- and medium-range rockets such as Qassams and Katyushas.

#5  The trade-off isn't a $100,000 missile defense against a $100 Qassam. The trade-off is against the damage a Qassam causes. How much is a room full of school kids worth? A blown-up grocery store?

Plus I suspect the Israelis will find a working missile defense comes in quite handy in the near future.

#8  $100,000 - An examination of the economic aspect also casts grave doubts on the decision to choose Iron Dome. The cost of each intercept missile will probably be about $100,000. (Rafael claims the cost of a missile will be about $40,000, but given the cost of similar missiles, that does not seem reasonable.)

$100 - In addition to development, the cost of one disposable component – the interceptor – makes daily operation prohibitively expensive. The original estimated cost of $25,000 for one interceptor missile has crept steadily up. When compared to the cost of the crude Qassam missiles that Iron Dome shoots down – a mere $100 – the project's operational costs seem exorbitant.

$20 - From smallwarsjournal.com ppt presentation on Iraq black market prices 10/2003:

“there is a vibrant international black market for the missiles in which an Sa-7 can fetch as ... terrorists of using Iraq public market as a weapons source.
Weapon 10/03 ... Market price ... CDI Buyout price.
RPG-7 rockets $20 $25.
C-4 / military TNT block 1kg $50 $200
60mm mortar tube $1000 $3000
60mm mortar $10 $20
82mm mortar $20 $50
107mm rocket $200 $400
122mm Artillery Shell $100 $750

#9  First off, I think they should have used a gun-based system in addition to a missile system.

Something like Centurion, that's available more or less off the shelf, and doesn't need a huge network (although a network would probably be helpful).

They could just put up a couple of those units first and then worry about working them into a network later.

Second, They could have also found a cheaper missile than whatever they used; I think the cost of the British starstreak is much cheaper, but I can't find a figure now.

Sri Lanka
54 civilians killed in SL 'no fire zone'
Shelling killed 54 civilians in a supposed "no-fire" zone in Sri Lanka's war between the government and separatist Tamil rebels while 30 more Tamil Tiger rebels were killed in fresh fighting in the island's north yesterday.

The victims were among the tens of thousands of terrified civilians trapped in a sliver of jungle and beach along the island's northeast coast fomenting the exodus of people fleeing the fighting where government troops are battling to dislodge remnants of the Tamil Tiger rebels, officials said.

Earlier four top LTTE commanders were among 30 rebels killed as Sri Lankan troops beat back a massive Tamil Tiger counter attack in Pudukudiyirippu, the last town held by them in the embattled north. After repulsing the Tiger attack Wednesday night, troops in retaliatory action wrested more areas from the rebels confining them now to 21 sq kms out of which 20 sq kms forms the 'No-Fire Zone'.

"The troops killed senior LTTE leaders Varada Annan, Kadar, Sooriyan and Eelawan in the attacks as they pushed back the rebel attack on their forward lines in Iranaippalai in which 30 militants were killed," Army spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said. Security forces recovered five dead bodies of rebels including three females along with a vehicle, a communication set and T-56 weapons after the clash, the spokesman said.

Dr Thurairaja Varatharajah, chief of a makeshift hospital in the war zone and the top government health official in the area, said 54 people were killed by shelling on Wednesday alone.

"Now 165 injured people are in hospital, 54 dead," Varatharajah said. "We are still receiving wounded people."

Access to the war zone is restricted and it is not possible to confirm who fired the shells.

The military has repeatedly denied that it has shelled the 7.5-mile-long (12-kilometer) "no-fire" zone that it has proclaimed as a place for civilians to seek safety. The government has also disputed statements by Varatharajah in the past.

Many civilians want to flee the war zone but have been stopped by the rebels. A statement Wednesday on the government's Web site said 1,515 people, including nearly 650 children, had crossed into military-controlled areas by late Tuesday near Puthkkudiyirippu, the last rebel-held town, where battles have been raging for weeks.

The Sri Lankan military says more than 50,000 civilians have escaped since the beginning of January, with the number averaging more than 1,000 a day in the last week.

On Wednesday, the British-based charity group Christian Aid became the latest to warn of the dangers faced by the remaining civilians trapped in the war zone, saying their situation was "becoming graver by the day" as supplies of food, medicine and fresh water run low.

The group called on the government and rebels to allow more access by aid workers to the people.

The United Nations, European Union and numerous countries have also recently voiced concern about the situation. The UN has said 2,800 civilians caught in the fighting have been killed since late January. The government disputes that figure.

The UN estimates at least 150,000 civilians are trapped in the war zone. The government says the number is closer to 50,000 to 60,000, and accuses the rebels of using them as human shields in a bid to avoid defeat.

The rebels have been fighting since 1983 for an independent state for the Tamil minority, which suffered decades of marginalisation at the hands of governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting.
