Bomb Blast Kills Police Officer in Kunduz
[Tolo News] A police officer was killed and four others including three coppers were maimed in a kaboom in northern Kunduz province early Tuesday, local officials said.

The incident took place in Chawk area of Khanabad district of the province, when a police vehicle was struck by a roadside kaboom, killing a police officer and injured three coppers and a young girl, provincial governor front man Enayatullah Khaliq said.

The victims have been taken to a nearby hospital, he said.

"A 13-year-old girl was among the injured and she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added.

No group including the Taliban has grabbed credit for the blast.

Algerian army kills seven militants in al Qaeda stronghold
The Algerian army killed seven Islamist militants in their stronghold east of Algiers, the defense ministry said on Wednesday, as government forces stepped up operations against suspected al Qaeda-linked fighters.

It was the largest government offensive against militants since an audacious assault on a desert gas plant in January in which 37 foreigners died.

Four militants were killed in an ambush in the Tizi Ouzou province and three others died in a separate operation in the nearby Boumerdes province on Monday night, the ministry said in a statement carried on the official APS news agency.

The two mountainous provinces are where the leader of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Abdelmalek Droukdel, is believed to be based, but there was no indication he had been caught up in the clashes.

Six assault rifles and "an important quantity" of ammunition were also seized.

Suspected Militants Arrested in Security Sweep Near Algerian Border
A number of suspected militants with alleged ties to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have been arrested in connection with recent events on Chambi Mountain in western Tunisia.

The Ministries of Defense and Interior declared yesterday that 37 individuals related directly or indirectly to the recent events in the region were arrested, with 20 others still hidden in the caves on the mountain. The government asserted that preliminary investigations suggest the arrested people belong to AQIM.

Minister of Interior Lofti ben Jeddou announced today that one militant was arrested two days ago on Chambi Mountain, and another was arrested earlier today while fleeing from the mountain toward a nearby town, according to Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM.

Security forces have been pursuing a group of suspected militants in the region, and several national guardsmen and soldiers participating in the operation have been injured by four land mine explosions in recent days. Chambi Mountain is in Kasserine Governorate near the Algerian border.

Tunisia Links Two Wanted Jihadist Groups to Qaida
[An Nahar] Two jihadist groups the Tunisian army is pursuing on the border with Algeria belong to al-Qaida, interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said on Tuesday.

"There are two groups, one in the Kef region with around 15 people and the other in Mount Chaambi with around 20 people," Aroui told a news conference, referring to the Islamist groups the army has been hunting since last week.

"There is a connection between the two groups, and the one in the Chaambi region has ties with the Okba Ibn Nafaa brigade, which is linked to al-Qaida," he added.

8 Held, Including 4 Saudis, after Deadly Tanzania Church Attack
[An Nahar] Tanzanian police have jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
two more people bringing to eight the number of suspects held following a deadly bombing at a church in which three people died, officials said Tuesday.

Four Tanzanians and four Saudis have been arrested in the wake of the bomb, one of the first such incidents in Tanzania, which President Jakaya Kikwete described as an "act of terrorism."

None of those arrested have yet been charged, said Arusha's governor Magesa Mulongo, updating the number of those killed to three, after one of the maimed died.

"We deplore the three deaths," he said, adding that around 40 people remain in hospital, three in a critical condition.

Officials have given no indication as to who might have carried out the attack, but tensions have been high between Tanzania's Christian and Moslem communities in recent months.

Officials have urged unity amongst Tanzanians.

"We must protect national unity, peace and tranquility of our country at any costs," Internal Affairs Minister Emmanuel Nchimbi said Monday.

The blast occurred outside Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic church in Arusha, a town popular with tourists visiting the popular Serengeti national park and snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.

The newly built church, in the Olasti district on the outskirts of Arusha, was celebrating its first ever mass at the time of the attack, and people were squeezed into the church building as well as sitting on benches outside.

The Vatican's ambassador to Tanzania, Archbishop Francisco Montecillo Padilla, was attending mass at the church but was not harmed.

Kikwete, who said he was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the incident, called on people to remain calm while police investigated the attacks.

In February, a Catholic priest was rubbed out outside his church on the largely Moslem archipelago of Zanzibar, the second such killing in recent months. A church was also set on fire on Zanzibar in February.

In March, 52 followers of controversial Moslem holy man Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda were nabbed
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for a year for riots in October in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, sparked by rumors that a 12-year-old boy at a Christian school had urinated on a copy of the Koran.

Around half of Tanzanians are believed to be Christian, and around a third of the population to be Moslem, although there are no official figures.

In neighboring Kenya -- whose troops invaded southern Somalia in 2011, prompting warnings of Dire Revenge™ by the al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab gunnies -- several churches have been targeted in attacks similar to the Arusha blast.

While Tanzania does not have troops in Somalia, it is home to Islamist groups connected to radical groups in the wider region including the Shabaab, according to United Nations

New Boko Haram Raid in Northern Nigeria Leaves 55 Dead
[VOA News] The Nigerian military says Islamist gunnies raided a remote northeastern town Tuesday, leaving 55 people dead, including police, prison officials and civilians.

Army front man Sagir Musa blamed the pre-dawn attack on al-Qaeda-linked Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Death Eaters, and said the strike targeted the town of Bama, a remote settlement near the borders of Cameroon and Chad.

Musa said that gunnies freed more than 100 prisoners and that military barracks and government buildings were burned to the ground during the nearly five-hour assault.

Boko Haram, which is seeking to carve out an Islamist state in northern Nigeria, has also been linked to an attack in April on the nearby Lake Chad fishing village of Baga.

Nearly 200 people were killed in the Baga attack, prompting Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
to order a full scale probe to determine what, if any, role the military played in the deaths.

Al-Qaeda suspects kill 3 Yemen colonels: military
Al-Qaeda-linked suspects on Wednesday shot dead three air force colonels from the strategic Al-Anad air base in the southern province of Lahij, a military official told AFP.

"Gunmen shot dead three pilots with the rank of colonel north of Huta (the provincial capital) as they were heading towards Al-Anad air base," said the official, adding that the killers were "suspected of belonging to Al-Qaeda."

Officials said last year that Al-Anad air base was being used by US soldiers to train local forces in combating terrorism.

Al-Qaeda network was driven out of most of its strongholds across Yemen's south in an army offensive backed by US drone strikes last year.

At the peak of the offensive in May and June 2012, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- classified by Washington as the global network's deadliest branch -- published a list of names of Yemeni pilots based at Al-Anad which it vowed to target for conducting air strikes against extremists' hideouts.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh Opposition Calls Strike over 'Mass Killing' of Islamists
[An Nahar] Bangladeshi opposition parties have called a two-day nationwide shutdown from Wednesday to protest what they describe as the "mass killing" of Islamists in a crackdown by security forces.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its Islamist allies called the strike after saying that hundreds of people died on Sunday and early Monday, when police broke up a mass rally in central Dhaka.

According to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally compiled after talking to police and medical sources, 38 people are known to have been killed since Sunday afternoon when police first confronted Islamist activists who had blockaded the capital.

The Islamists are trying to pressure the government into introducing a new blasphemy law and have been calling for the execution of bloggers whom they accuse of having insulted the Prophet Mohammed.

A border guard succumbed to his head injuries Tuesday to raise the tally from Monday's 37, police inspector Mozammel Haq told AFP, adding dozens were still being treated in hospital.

The country's most prominent daily Prothom Alo said at least 49 people have died in the festivities, some of the fiercest street violence in decades.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
the BNP says the real number of dead runs into the "hundreds", accusing the authorities of concealing bodies but without giving any evidence.

"We have called two days of nationwide strike to protest the mass killing of Hefajat-e-Islam workers and supporters on Sunday and Monday," BNP front man Khandaker Mosharraf told AFP on Tuesday.

The strike will begin at 6:00 am (0100 GMT) on Wednesday and end at 6:00 pm on Thursday, Mosharraf added.

Police on Tuesday announced charges against 194 activists of the Hefajat-e-Islam (Protectorate of Islam), a hardline Islamic group behind the massive protests.

Its secretary general Junayed Babu Nagori, who was tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
on Monday night, faces a murder charge, police sub-inspector Tabibur Rahamn told AFP.

Hefajat's main leader, 90-year-old Allama Ahmad Shafi, was put on a plane to the country's second city Chittagong on Monday where his supporters clashed with police, leaving at least five people dead.

Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu accused the heads of religious seminaries of encouraging "terrorist activities" by sending their students out to join the protests.

"The madrassa superintendents who are encouraging their students to take part in terrorist activities will be tried," he told a briefing.

Chanting "Atheists must be hanged", Hefajat activists marched along at least six highways on Sunday, effectively cutting Dhaka off from the rest of the country.

Police said the number of protesters reached around 200,000 at one point.

The protest by Hefajat, which draws support from madrassas, was another sign of the divide between Islamists and the secular government, after the deaths of around 100 people earlier this year in violence linked to war crimes trials.

Three leading Islamists have so far been convicted by a special tribunal for their role in mass killings during the 1971 independence war, which saw what was then East Pakistain break from Islamabad.

The overall corpse count in violence between religious hardliners and the police since January now stands at around 150.

U.N. Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
has called for an end to the violence, expressing his sadness at the loss of life.

Ban "urges political and religious leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and help defuse the tensions", said U.N. front man Martin Nesirky.

Home Front: WoT
Tag Team: Jihadis, Hackers Join Forces To Launch Cyberattacks On United States
Datelined Monday. Have any Rantburgers seen anything more about this?
[WashTimes] Middle East- and North Africa-based criminal hackers are preparing cyberattacks this week against the websites of high-profile U.S. government agencies, banks and other companies, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The attacks, dubbed #OpUSA, for Operation USA, will begin Tuesday, the department said in a warning bulletin circulated to the private sector last week. The bulletin was first obtained and posted online by blogger and cybercrime expert Brian Krebs.

The attacks are called for in the name of Anonymous, the leaderless coalition of hackers whose trademark Guy Fawkes mask has become a global symbol for their anarchistic spirit.

"OpUSA poses a limited threat of temporarily disrupting U.S. websites," the homeland security bulletin states, saying the attackers will likely use commercial hacking tools in a variety of "nuisance-level" strikes, defacing websites or temporarily knocking them offline.

"Some of the participants possess only rudimentary hacking skills," the authors add.

More dangerous, though, is the developing alliance the organization of the attacks seems to presage between criminal hackers and violent Islamic orcs.

The bulletin notes that the attacks are being promoted by the moderators of websites and discussion forums that host al Qaeda and other Islamic orc material, in addition to calls through more conventional hacker channels like the bulletin board Pastebin.

This collaboration may "signal an emerging trend of Middle East- and North Africa-based criminally motivated hackers collaborating with others regardless of their motivation," like Islamic orcs, states the bulletin.

One killed, three hurt in pre-poll violence
[Dawn] A worker of the Pakistain Mohammedan League-Functional was rubbed out while three others were maimed in an armed attack on a party office in the Ayub Goth area of New Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
on Monday, police and party sources said.

"The attack followed by festivities between the workers of the PML-F and Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
," said the SHO of the Sohrab Goth cop shoppe.

The festivities broke out between the two political parties over hoisting of flags, the police said, adding that subsequently, gunnies attacked the PML-F, which resulted in the killing of Abdullah Gopang, 45.

The maimed were identified as Zaheer, 25, Ali Murad, 16, and Abdul Sattar, 30.

PML-F leader Aijaz Soomro said that three men armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed into their election office for PS-126 and opened indiscriminate firing on the people there.

Aijaz, whose brother Shahid Soomro is contesting elections from the provincial assembly seat, said that the dear departed was the party's senior vice president of Gadap Town.

The body and the maimed victims were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, respectively.

"Such incidents showed that the election commissioner and the caretaker government set-up are not making sufficient efforts to curb the killings and ensure peaceful polls," he said.

Speaking to Dawn, an official in charge of the Ayub Goth police post said that the PML-F leaders have nominated four persons in the case pertaining to the murder of their activist and wounding three others. "The suspects are Hanif alias Pachpan, Asghar alias Tedi, Naushad and Faizan," he said, adding that they were activists of the MQM according to the PML-F.

Road leading to MQM head office closed

Police on Monday closed a main road from Ayesha Manzil to Gulshan-e-Iqbal for public to provide maximum security to the Nine Zero headquarters of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, said SSP-Central Amir Farooqui.

The decision was taken in the wake of twin kabooms near the MQM's stronghold on Saturday that claimed lives of three persons.

The commuters have been advised to take alternative routes.

All the schools were owned by one person, he added.

Tribal clash leaves five dead in Balochistan's Jhal Magsi area

...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
on Tuesday morning, according to Levies sources.

A Levies official Abdul Jabbar told Dawn.com that five rustics had died and that both groups used heavy weapons against each other in the clash that was the result of the usual tiresome primitives' penchant for mindless violence.

He said the bodies were shifted to Gandawah hospital for postmortem.

Levies and police reached the area and investigations into the incident went underway.

Earlier in April this year, an independent election candidate, Abdul Fateh Magsi, and three other persons from Balochistan's Jhal Magsi area were killed by unknown assailants, prompting the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) to postpone the elections in the areas PB -32 constituency.

According to the police and relatives of the dear departed, was kidnapped on Monday night and his perforated carcass was found on Tuesday morning.

They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
(LJ) from Hub, 25 kilometres from the placid provincial capital, on Tuesday, SSP SIU Farooq Awan told Dawn.com.

Speaking on the arrested suspected myrmidon, Tariq Shafi alias Doctor, SSP Awan said Shafi "is a known terrorist" and was wanted in 14 cases pertaining to sectarian killings, in which eight people were killed.

Shafi is also a suspect in the murder of college principal, Professor Sibte Jafar, and is listed as absconding in the case, Awan said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian troops push into strategic southern town
An activist group says government forces have pushed into a strategic town south of Damascus on the highway leading to the border with Jordan.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the troops' advance in Khirbet Ghazaleh comes after weeks of fighting and government's attempt to secure the highway.

The Observatory and another activist group, the Aleppo Media Center, say opposition fighters have shot down a fighter jet that was bombing rebel positions in the battle for the Mannagh airbase near the border with Turkey.

Wednesday's violence comes as Syria is experiencing an Internet outage similar to a two-day blackout last year, according to companies that monitor online traffic around the world.

Mobile and landline phone services also appeared to be down across Syria.

Four U.N. Peacekeepers Seized in Golan Heights
[An Nahar] An gang on Tuesday kidnapped four U.N. peacekeepers from the Philippines in the Golan Heights, which has been hit by mounting spillover from the Syrian civil war, the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
said.

The four were patrolling near the Al Jamlah locality in the ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria where 21 Filipino peacekeepers were seized by Syrian rebels in March, said a U.N. peacekeeping spokeswoman, Josephine Guerrero.

"An unknown gang" took the men, Guerrero told Agence La Belle France Presse. "Efforts are underway to secure their release."

In a posting on their Facebook page, the "Yarmuk Martyrs Brigade" rebel group said they had taken the four peacekeepers for their own safety because of fierce fighting in the area.

"The leadership of the Yarmuk Martyrs Brigade announces... an operation to secure and protect United Nations forces in Wadi Yarmuk in the area between Syria and the occupied Golan Heights," the group said.

The posting showed a photograph of four men in blue flak jackets, with three of them marked "U.N." and "Philippines."

The statement said shelling by regime troops and fighting in the area "seriously threatened the safety" of the peacekeepers and had prompted the fighters to "intervene and work to get them out."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog confirmed there was heavy fighting underway in the area.

The U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which has been in the Golan Heights since 1974, has about 1,000 troops and civilian staff.

The 917 troops from Austria, India, the Philippines, Morocco and Moldova carry only very light arms.

The United Nations sent extra armored personnel carriers, ambulances and other security equipment to the force after the March 6-9 abduction.
