ASWJ fighters advance into El Bur town, militants retreat
(Sh. M. Network)-Columns of gun-toting Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a ASWJ fighters backed by battle-wagons on Monday moved towards the main town of Al Burin Galgadud region, central Somalia, after Al shabab retreated, ASWJ security Official Abdirahamn Ali Igal said.

He said ASWJ fighters are in Bulacley village, on the outskirts of El Bur, preparing to take over the town and set up a local administration, after Al shabab cut-throats pulled out of the city.

The moderate Islamist ASWJ militia, which is fighting alongside Somalia's UN-backed government and Æthiopian troops, withdrew the city early this year allowing Al shabab to move back and capture without combat.

El Bur town, which lies just about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of the Æthiopian border has been Al shabab stronghold and changed between the hands of the rival sides (Al shabab and ASWJ)

Æthiopian troops re-entered Somalia last year to help Somali government defeat Al shabab and have taken key positions in south-central Somalia.

Footage of sailors held by pirates released
[Dawn] While the latest footage purportedly showing seven Paks among 22 sailors held hostage by Somali pirates for ransom might have upset the families who have been waiting for their release for the past 18 months, the authorities engaged in the process of getting them released against ransom payment were on Monday confident about 'good news' within the next few days.

The footage relayed by the news channels purports to show crew members of the M.V. Albedo -- a Malaysian-flagged fat merchantman -- at Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location in the custody of armed Somali pirates. The seamen showed in the footage are visibly shaken and weak.

Ahmed Chinoy, the chief of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee that has been instrumental in collecting 'donations' for 'ransom payment' and in contact with the pirates as well as the families of the hostages, see the footage as an attempt from the pirates to pressurise the people involved in the 'release process' to get their terms materialised.

"But we are moving fast and have made almost all arrangements at least at our end," he said. "We have collected $1.1 million for the ransom and as we are in contact with the pirates, the deadline for the payment is not an issue. But there are other anomalies that need to be addressed."

He explained that the government of Malaysia was in the process of completing legal and other formalities to get the ship owned by a Malaysian company released. He was optimistic that no more collection of funds would be needed once the Malaysian government was done with its job.

"I am very hopeful about good news within the next few days. Among 22 sailors, there are seven each from Pakistain and Bangladesh, six from Sri Lanka and one each from Iran and India. We have made tireless efforts to get the hostages freed regardless of what nationality they have," he added.

M.V. Albedo was sailing from the UAE to Kenya with all crew members on board in November 2010 when Somali pirates hijacked it.

The fat merchantman was hijacked only a few months after the Somali pirates had held 22 crew members, including four Paks, of M.V. Suez hostage in August 2010. It was only after the payment of $2.1 million ransom in June 2011 that they released the MV Suez crew comprising four Paks, six Indians, 11 Egyptians and one Sri Lankan.

With the incidents of piracy increasing, local and international authorities are under pressure to design a mechanism for the security of cargo ships, including the deployment of armed guards on vessels, but shippers argue that it would add to the risks to the business.

"Of the world's 53 hijackings of cargo ships for ransom last year, 49 took place off the coast of Somalia," said an official at the directorate ports and shipping. "A number of Pak seamen were among those taken hostage by Somali pirates with dozens of their foreign colleagues kept hostage for ransom by pirates for as long as a year."

#1  How does putting armed guards on ships in the Gulf of Aden possibly increase the risks of the journey? They are already sailing thru pirate infested waters. Well armed/trained guards have got a good chance of stopping pirates dead in their tracks.

What these shipping owners are NOT saying is that they don't give a da** about their own crews. Since the crewmen are Filipinos and Pakistanis (etc.), they are basically considered expendable. The only thing the owners care about is that their ships are not damaged - which could happen in a firefight. So this is all about the costs of repairs, and payoffs from insurance.

Pretty da**ed sick.
Maybe someone should round up a bunch of these shipping owners, and trade them as a group to the pirates - in exchange for the men currently in captivity. Suddenly when the show is on the other foot, we might see a change in attitude.
Posted by: Raider || 07/11/2012 10:08 Comments || Top||

#2  Doesn't seem very smart for Malaysia to confirm that it's arranging a ransom payment. It will encourage further abductions of Malaysian-flagged ships and/or encourage shippers to register their vessels with countries other than Malaysia.
Posted by: American Delight || 07/11/2012 13:40 Comments || Top||

#3  Seems to me that if protecting your ship is important you'd want something like a PT boat aboard that could be dropped into the water and intercept anything that shows up on radar long before they got close. Couple of 50 calibres would do wonders to the kind of ship the pirates tend to use.

#4  So this is all about the costs of repairs, and payoffs from insurance.

It's more involved than that, as anyone with experience in maritime law can tell you.

Essentially, it's the gray area where a merchant vessel drifts into the 'warship' designation. The latter has international legal and political ramifications.

'Armed mechantman' is a completely different animal and is legally considered an auxiliary military asset of a government.

#5  Good point, Paps.
Posted by: American Delight || 07/11/2012 17:25 Comments || Top||

#6  There are options.

One is to jack the costs of insurance for ships transiting through areas of known piracy to beyond the point of pain. That is sort-of happening, but not to the point of forcing shippers, shipping companies and governments to take a more proactive (and preferably aggressive) stance.

Another is to enforce a convoy-only run through areas of known piracy. Anyone on their own voids their insurance. It'll be like herding cats - at first. But it will cut down on attacks.

Finally, deal with this as the international organized-crime operation that it is. That likely won't happen; there's too much money being spread around.

Mali Islamists Destroy Tombs at Ancient Timbuktu Mosque
[An Nahar] The Islamists controlling northern Mali on Tuesday destroyed two tombs at the ancient Djingareyber mud mosque in Timbuktu, an endangered world heritage site, witnesses told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"Currently the Islamists are busy destroying two tombs of Timbuktu's great Djingareyber mosque. They are shooting in the air to chase away the crowd, to scare them," one witness said.

"The two mausolea are adjacent to the western wall of the great mosque and the Islamists have hoes, chisels, they are hitting the mausolea which are made out of packed earth," said a source close to the mosque's imam.

"They say they will destroy everything."

Another witness reported the Islamists had cried "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) as they hammered away at the mosque which is one of the most important in Timbuktu.

He added that the Islamists had blocked off two main roads leading to the mosque, which was one of the fabled city's main tourist attractions before the region became a no-go area for westerners.

The same witness reported that the Islamists had asked a television crew from Qatar-based Al-Jazeera
... an Arab news network headquartered in Qatar, notorious for carrying al-Qaeda press releases. The name means the Peninsula, as in the Arabian Peninsula. In recent years it has settled in to become slightly less biased than MSNBC, in about the same category as BBC or CBS...
to film their actions.

The fighters from the Islamist group Ansar Dine (Defenders of Faith) began their destruction of the city's cultural treasures on July 1, shortly after UNESCO placed them on a list of endangered world heritage sites.

Declaring the ancient Mohammedan shrines "haram", or forbidden in Islam, Ansar Dine set about destroying seven of Timbuktu's 16 mausolea of ancient Mohammedan saints.

Boko Haram Claims Weekend Funeral Carnage in Nigeria

Islamists on Tuesday claimed a weekend attack at a graveyard in central Plateau state that left at least 22 people dead, including two prominent politicians.

Police and officials have blamed nomadic herdsmen for the raid, but in a statement issued from purported front man Abul Qaqa, Boko Haram said it "wants to inform of its delight over the success of the attacks we launched... in Plateau state."

Arabia
Al Qaeda suicide bomber attacks Yemen police academy
A jacket wallah killed at least 22 people outside a police academy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Wednesday, dramatically exposing the government's vulnerability to al Qaeda-linked forces of Evil despite a U.S.-backed offensive against them.
All states, even the U.S. and Britain, are vulnerable to boomers all the time. Yemen is, apparently for the first time, taking the problem seriously.
Policeman Fadel Ali told Rooters police cadets were leaving the academy when the bomber attacked: "We ran to the place and found dozens of cadets covered in blood. Blood was everywhere." Parts of the cadets' khaki uniforms were scattered across the dirt outside the academy, and blood spattered the walls.
That's usually the case when they detonate...
Unusually, the suicide bomber did not die immediately but was evacuated to hospital by medical staff.
... who proceeded to treat his wounds with salt and rubbing alcohol...
He was missing a leg and an arm.
He was also missing, spleen, pancreas, 22 feet of intestine, liver, and onions...
A Yemeni security official, who declined to be named, said the bomber told security officers before he died that he was affiliated with al Qaeda and came from Amran, a town 70 km (43 miles) north of Sanaa.
"Aaaiiieee! No more salt! No more alcohol! I came from Amran!"
"Where the hell is that?"
"A town 70 km north of Sanaa!"
"What's that in miles?"
"43 miles, I think!"
"Where's your controller hang out?"
"[RATTLE!] Rosebud!"

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed the attack, just as it did a similar attack in Sanaa in May, when a suicide bomber in army uniform killed more than 90 people rehearsing for a military parade.
"Yep. That's right. We dunnit. Well, he did it. We planned it."
The violence in the heart of the capital demonstrated how far the government is from defeating the forces of Evil despite a U.S.-backed offensive that drove them out of their southern strongholds this year.
Actually, the Yemeni government has defeated AQAP in the field, killing or capturing large numbers of them. They're now going back to guerrilla warfare in which they hope to destabilize and weaken the government through a process of attrition and terrorism.

IN RETREAT, NOT DEFEATED

"The bombing shows that the security services are still weak
... which is to be expected, since Saleh's seat is still warm and lots of his relatives and proteges are still occupying positions from which they can undermine Hadi...
and that al Qaeda has not been defeated but simply retreated, maintaining its ability to strike wherever it wants," said Saeed Obeid, an expert on al Qaeda.
Experts on Yemen aren't a dime a dozen, but you can probably get three for a quarter. I'm guessing there aren't any genuine 'experts,' not even Hadi, since the problem set they're facing is brand new, never been faced before. On the other hand, we've seen lots of asymmetrical warfare in the past fifty years, so we know that once defeated in the field they'll go back to terror tactics, lick their wounds, raise some more money from among the faithful, and try again if the state moves into failure, go to Timbuktoo to try their luck there if it doesn't.

Yemen Arrests Al-Qaeda Members Who Escaped Prison
[Yemen Post] The Yemen authorities incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
on Tuesday two Al-Qaeda suspects who beat feet from the central prison in Hodeida province last month, the interior ministry reported.
Have they considered hamstringing? It worked well on blacksmiths in the old days...
On June 26, five Al-Qaeda prisoners beat feet from the central prison in Hodeida, triggering doubts about several prison breaks by Al-Qaeda faceless myrmidons in several Yemeni cities in recent years.

This year, Al-Qaeda suspects were reported to have beat feet from jails in Aden and other cities.

The ministry said the two were incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
in Hodeida and named: Nasser Al-Sayed Ismail Mutahar and Haitham Hasan Sad Ahmed Afifi.

A hunt is continuing for the remaining prisoners, three, it said, pointing out the local authorities announced a reward for information leading their arrest or location.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
the Yemeni authorities are continuing an extensive hunt for Al-Qaeda operatives across the republic after the army drove all faceless myrmidons out of their strongholds in Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
and Shabwa provinces.

Key towns including Abyan capital Zinjibar were seized and declared as Islamic emirates last year, but the army in association with tribal fighters cleared all faceless myrmidons and regained control of the towns.

Hundreds of faceless myrmidons including big shots were killed in the US-backed offensive in the past few months and the victory has been widely hailed.

Separately, the state penal court in the capital Sanaa convicted three people of forming an gang handing down death sentences to two of them.

The third was given a jail sentence.

U.S. 'al-Qaida Backer' Pleads Guilty to Pentagon Bomb Plot
[An Nahar] An American al-Qaeda supporter admitted plotting to bomb the Pentagon and the Capitol using explosives-laden model planes and will be tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for 17 years, officials said Tuesday.

In an agreement reached last week, Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, pleaded guilty to attempting to damage and destroy the Washington landmarks by means of an explosive and attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

U.S. judicial authorities said in a statement they would dismiss several other counts against Ferdaus as part of a plea agreement reached in a federal court, following a case in which the suspect fell victim to an FBI sting.

"He has also agreed to a joint sentencing recommendation of 17 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release," a statement from the U.S. Justice Department said.

"In exchange, the government has agreed to dismiss the remaining charges against Ferdaus at the time of sentencing," the statement said.

It said the Mohammedan, a physics graduate, planned "to damage or destroy the Pentagon and U.S. Congress building using large remote-controlled aircraft filled with C-4 plastic explosives."

In a complaint filed late last year, officials said Ferdaus' plan was to use the "aerial assault" to "eliminate key locations." Ferdaus was quoted as saying the Capitol dome would be blown "to smithereens."

Ferdaus was captured as part of a sting operation in which he sought to procure explosive chemicals, grenades and firearms from undercover FBI agents.

Authorities said Ferdaus, while inspecting the explosives and firearms delivered to him by an undercover agent, placed some of the explosives inside a remote-controlled aircraft that he had obtained for his planned attack.

He was tossed in the clink
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
after locking explosives and firearms in his storage unit at which time he was placed under arrest.

Ferdaus was also accused of modifying mobile phones for use as switches in bombs to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq and to have given the devices to FBI agents "he believed were members of or recruiters for al-Qaeda."

According to the original complaint, when told -- falsely -- one of his phones had been part of a bomb that killed three soldiers, he is alleged to have said: "That was exactly what I wanted."

Qaida Front Group Claims Iraq Attacks
[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda's front group in Iraq has grabbed credit for a spate of attacks last month, including dozens on June 13, when violence across the country killed 72 people.

The Islamic State of Iraq, in a statement posted on jihadist Internet forums, said it carried out 47 attacks over several months, including 27 on June 13, which was the country's deadliest day since August 2011.

The statement on the Honein forum detailed a long list of car booms, roadside kabooms and targeted liquidations against what the ISI said were "Safavid" soldiers, police and civilians.

Sunni Islamic fascisti often invoke Iran's Safavid past, referring to the Shiite dynasty that ruled Persia between the 16th and 18th centuries and conquered part of Iraq, when denouncing the Storied Baghdad

government, which they say is controlled by Iran.

June saw a marked uptick in unrest in Iraq, with 282 people dying as a result of violence last month, according to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally. Government figures, however, said just 131 people were killed.

11 inmates escape in Philippines jailbreak
Five months after a bloody attempt to spring him out of jail, Datukan Samad – alias Lastikman – and 10 other inmates escaped the provincial jail in Cotabato City by sawing off the iron grills of the prison toilet before dawn yesterday.

Aside from Samad, authorities identified the other escapees as Anwar Maguid, Dahad Daginan, Abel Unsing, Kegkim Omar, Bong Usop, Siki Pilas, Ogie Kimbaw, Ampoy Kimbaw, Saipuna Baulo and Basco Puas.

Investigators are now checking how Samad’s group brought in a hacksaw and why guards of the provincial jail didn't detect the weapon during inspection.

Last Feb. 19, around fifty heavily armed men assaulted the Kidapawan district jail in a bid to rescue Samad. The foiled attempt resulted in the death of three civilians including a Red Cross volunteer, and 16 others were wounded including fire and jail personnel.

Marine troops deployed for anti-kidnapping duties in Cotabato City were dispatched to help track down Samad and the other escapees.

Col. Prudencio Asto, spokesman for the 6th Infantry Division, said Samad was the head of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) Special Operations Group (SOG). The MILF leadership has disowned him and denied military reports that he and his men are under direct control of the MILF’s 108th Base Command.

Russia sends naval flotilla to Syria port
[Saudi Gazette] Russia has sent a naval flotilla of six warships led by an anti-submarine destroyer to its naval base at the Syrian port of Tartus, the Interfax news agency said Tuesday.

The Admiral Chabanenko and three landing craft have left their home port of Severomorsk in the Arctic Circle on their way to the Mediterranean where they will be joined by the Russian patrol ship Yaroslav Mudry as well as an assistance vessel, a military source told the agency. "The program of the voyage includes a call in the Syrian port of Tartus," the unnamed source told the news agency.

Russia has been bitterly criticized by the West for failing to cut military ties with Syria despite the conflict between the regime and opposition rebels that has claimed about 17,000 lives in the 16-month uprising.

Russia also said it wanted to host a new meeting of foreign powers on the Syria crisis but stressed that the talks should not decide Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's
Despoiler of Deraa...
fate.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov also said the attempt in Geneva to save Kofi Annan's
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
peace plan needed to be continued with the involvement of countries such as Iran, which both Washington and European powers strongly oppose.

Moscow Denies Reports about Russian Warships Sailing into Syria
(SANA)-An informed source at the Russian Foreign Ministry Tuesday denied reports of some media that Russian warships sailed into Syria, expressing astonishment at the attempts of stirring up this issue again.

"Simply, it is ridiculous what occurs in the mass media of rumors about alleged sailing of Russian ships that carry landing units into Syria," the source stated, clarifying that Russia has nothing to hide.

" Russian Defense Ministry announced that a number of the North Sea fleet ships left Severomorsk Navy and sailed into the north part of the Atlantic Ocean to run regular trainings that have no relation to the events in Syria." The source said.

It added that in spite of the noise about the Russian ships, no one talks about the maneuvers of the Western States' fleets in the region.

#7  I like the sound of pulling out Assad and the WMD. I hope thats it.

If I were Putin I'd rescue Assad to show other clients that I'm behind them but there are limits. This would avoid most of my military equipment being show as poor quality against NATO equipment and it gives the loyal syrians a chance to destroy or remove a lot of equipment opening up potential future sales.

I'd also use the opportunity to arrange an oil deal and or arm sales with Turkey for my assistance in ending their headache.

Leb Army Sends Reinforcements to Northern Border
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army on Tuesday began sending troop reinforcements to the northern border with strife-torn Syria after deadly attacks in the region, an army front man told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"Yes, we have started to reinforce our troops, and the operation will take us a week to 10 days to complete," the front man said on condition of anonymity.

The cabinet decided on Monday evening to dispatch army reinforcements to the border area in the north, after a series of frontier incidents in recent months, some of them deadly.

Syrian troops and gunnies traded gunfire overnight in the border area and shells fell inside Leb, wounding civilians, the army said earlier.

The official Syrian news agency

SANA confirmed the violence and said on Tuesday that troops foiled attempts by "armed terrorist groups" to infiltrate the border from Leb during the night.

Red Crescent Worker among 56 Killed in Syria
[An Nahar] Red Islamic Thingy staffer Khaled Khaffaji, shot during overnight in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor, died on Tuesday, bringing to 56 the number of deaths across the strife-torn country, monitors said.

The Red Thingy Red Islamic Thingy condemned Khaffaji's killing, saying "this is the second time in less than a month that a member of the Red Islamic Thingy has been killed while on duty."

"We are devastated. The loss of Khaled is completely unacceptable," said Dr. Abdul Rahman al-Attar, president of the Syrian Arab Red Islamic Thingy.

"All sides must respect health-care workers and the Red Thingy and Red Islamic Thingy emblems, and allow Syrian Arab Red Islamic Thingy volunteers to provide assistance unhindered and in safety."

The statement did not say who killed Khaffaji.

Five Red Islamic Thingy workers have been killed since the anti-regime revolt broke out in March last year, including the organization's secretary general, the statement noted.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
violence raged across Syria, as troops rained shells on the rebel-held central town of Rastan, with activists saying the situation was "tragic."

"It really makes you want to cry," an activist in Rastan told Agence La Belle France Presse via Skype. "We have many maimed, and there are no doctors here, only two dentists. We can't do anything for the maimed. It's tragic."

Identifying himself as Abu Rawan, he said "we are out of electricity, water and food supplies. They've shelled the water tanks and destroyed the power lines."

Activists describe Rastan as the town with the highest number of defected army officers, and regime forces have tried unsuccessfully for several months to reclaim the besieged town in Homs province.

Of those killed on Tuesday, at least nine were civilians, four were soldiers and four were rebels, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said the identity of the remaining four was not impossible to confirm.
