[Tolo News] At least three non-combatants were killed in a roadside mine blast early Sunday in northern Kunduz, local officials said.

The incident took place about 8 a.m. after a police vehicle struck a roadside mine, resulting in the death of three civilians passing by the area, Dr. Mukhtar said.

Daesh Fighters Flee to Mountains After Commanders Eliminated: Muslimyar
[Tolo News] Daesh fighters in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
have reportedly escaped to mountains after certain senior commanders of the group were eliminated over the past few days, Chairman of Senate Fazl Hadi Moslemyar said.

Expressing deep concerns over recent activities of Daesh in Nangarhar, Moslemyar stated on Sunday that the recent Arclight airstrikes against Daesh had considerably restricted the group in the eastern province.

Hafiz Saeed, chief of the Daesh affiliate group in Afghanistan, or the so-called Khurasan, was recently killed in an air strike in Nangarhar, the Afghan intelligence agency said on Saturday.

Saeed, who was a former leader of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) before pledging allegiance to Daesh, was killed along with 30 others in the air strike in Achin district of Nangarhar.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the group is now said to have been dispersed as the fighters hiding into the mountains.

"Daesh have suffered huge a loss as a result of recent Arclight airstrikes, fighting with the Taliban and special raids by the Afghan forces," Moslemyar said. "These fighters are now fleeing to the mountains."

Saeed's killing was the third and the biggest attack against Daesh in less than a week after Gull Zaman, the group's number 2 in Afghanistan, was killed along with his deputy, Jahanyar, in a drone strike in the same district.

Also, Mawlavi Shahidullah Shahid, a former Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) front man and the first one to pledge allegiance to Daesh in Afghanistan, was killed last week in a similar attack in Nangarhar. TTP sacked him last year in October after he sworn allegiance to Daesh along with five other commanders of the group.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
the governor of Nangarhar, Salim Khan Kunduzi, accused Pak terror groups of backing Daesh in Afghanistan.

"Terrorists are flocking to Afghanistan from across the border to help Daesh," Kunduzi stated.

Daesh, which has seized large cities in Iraq and Syria, have been dramatically growing in Afghanistan as scores of Taliban and other Death Eaters have sworn allegiance to the bad boy group.

Recently, the Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) announced the establishment of a joint unit aimed at heightening coordination among security institutions to more effectively combat Daesh affiliates in Afghanistan.

Suicide car bomb kills 25 in east Afghanistan near U.S. base
[REUTERS] A suicide boom-mobile killed 25 people and maimed 10 in southeastern Afghanistan close to a U.S. base on Sunday, police said.

The attack took place close to a checkpoint on the outskirts of the city of Khost where several cars had been stopped, Khost police chief Faizullah Ghairat said.

The U.S. military said none of its personnel were hurt.

The base at Camp Chapman, once used by the CIA to help oversee strikes against Taliban and al Qaeda targets, suffered one of the worst attacks in CIA history in late 2009, when seven intelligence officers were killed by an al Qaeda operative that Americans thought had been "de-radicalized".

Latest clashes between Libyan soldiers, Islamists in Benghazi kill 19
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Around 19 people have been killed and 80 maimed in heavy festivities between Libyan soldiers and Islamist fighters in the eastern city of Benghazi in the past three days, medics said on Saturday.

Forces loyal to Libya's internationally recognized government have been fighting Islamist groups in the country's second-largest city for over a year, part of a wider struggle since Muammar Qadaffy
...The late megalomaniac dictator of Libya, admired everywhere for his garish costumes, funny hats, harem of cutie bodyguards, and incoherent ravings. As far as is known, he is the only person who's ever declared jihad on Switzerland...
was tossed and killed in 2011.

Army forces backed by armed residents have regained some of the territory in Benghazi lost last year, but fighters of the Islamist Majlis al-Shura are still present in several districts and the central port area.

There have been heavy festivities for three days in the Lithi district since Islamist fighters holed up there attacked soldiers blocking the main streets into the district, army officials say.

"Special forces, supporting units and youth from the area have stopped a major assault," army special forces commander Wanis Bukhamada told Rooters. "These are the most violent festivities since fighting started. We still control the main junctions (into Lithi) but have lost soldiers and volunteers during this battle."

murderous Moslems of being behind the assault. The group, which has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq, has built a presence in Benghazi and other parts of lawless Libya.

The Benghazi fighting highlights the chaos in Libya, where gangs back two governments vying for control. The official prime minister has been based in the east since the capital, Tripoli

, was seized by a rival group which set up its own government.

Both sides command loose coalitions of former anti-Qadaffy rebels. After Qadaffy's ouster, the various factions split along political, regional and tribal lines.

Islamic State has exploited the chaos by taking over several towns, executing foreigners and launching attacks against embassies in Tripoli.

grabbed credit for a car kaboom at the Italian consulate in central Cairo on Saturday, in an escalation of violence that suggests holy warriors are opening a new front against foreigners in Egypt.

"Through God's blessing, Islamic State soldiers were able to detonate a parked boom-mobile carrying 450 kg of kaboom on the headquarters of the Italian consulate in central Cairo," the group said on a website that carries its statements.

"We recommend that Moslems stay clear of these security dens because they are legitimate targets for the mujahideen's strikes."

Until now, Islamic State supporters in Egypt had not set their sights on Western targets, focusing instead on security forces.

A health ministry front man said one Egyptian civilian was killed and 10 maimed. State news agency MENA separately said two coppers were among the maimed.

The blast heavily damaged the consulate, shook other buildings downtown and could be heard in several surrounding neighborhoods.

Italia's Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said there were no Italian victims in the blast. "Italia will not be intimidated," he added on Twitter.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb said the country was at war and urged the world to unite against terrorism after the attack, a state-run newspaper reported.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former army chief elected mostly on promises he would deliver stability, has said militancy poses an existential threat to Egypt, other Arab states and the West.

members died early Sunday when the Islamists raided a prison in southeastern Niger in a likely bid to free detained colleagues, humanitarian and government sources said.

The attack on the prison at Diffa, near the border with Nigeria, occurred between 0000 and 0100 GMT, a humanitarian source said.

"They killed a captain of the prison guard and three of the attackers died," the source said, adding that they "came on foot" and were probably trying to free some Boko Haram members held in the prison.

Two other jail guards were maimed, the source said. The attackers were dressed in army uniforms and had grenades and assault rifles.

Diffa is located in the heartland of the Boko Haram insurgency. Many young people from Diffa have joined the ranks of Boko Haram, getting paid about 300,000 CFA francs (around 450 euros or $500) per month, according to local officials.

In June, 38 non-combatants were killed -- including 14 women and 10 children -- in a Boko Haram attack targeting two villages close to Diffa.

A local official told AFP that some of the attackers fled after the raid, adding that the dead were buried in a common grave.

The local private Anfani radio station reported that there was an intense gunbattle at the prison for at least an hour. It said the three dead attackers all wore belts packed with explosives.

Boko Haram staged a failed raid on Diffa prison in February.

Explosives Found at Church in Jos, Central Nigeria
[AnNahar] Explosives were found at a church in the central Nigerian city of Jos on Sunday, police told Agence La Belle France Presse, adding that the device went off but there were no casualties.

"It was averted because the bomb was detected by the church's security personnel. There were no casualties," said Emmanuel Abuh, front man for the state police in Plateau, of which Jos is the capital.

The incident in the north of the city came a week after a jacket wallah went kaboom! at a church in the northeastern city of Potiskum, killing the pastor and four other worshippers.

Jos was also targeted last Sunday, when Boko Haram

turbans fired on a mosque, including with a rocket-propelled grenade, and also hit a restaurant popular with travellers from the restive northeast.

The twin attack left 51 dead and 47 injured.

Boko Haram will likely come under suspicion for the latest incident, as it has repeatedly hit both churches and mosques in the past.

The Islamists claimed a failed suicide kaboom in the northeastern city of Maiduguri that killed two people on Saturday and a suicide kaboom in Chad's capital, N'Djamena that left 15 dead.

Arabia
Saudi-led strikes hit Yemen rebels
[SKYNEWS.AU] Saudi-led coalition warplanes have bombarded Yemeni rebels, witnesses say, in a new blow to a UN-proposed truce in the impoverished country where millions are threatened with famine.

Air strikes hit the Shi'ite Huthi stronghold of Saada in Yemen's north on Sunday, as well as other rebel positions south of the capital Sanaa and in the southern province of restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
, residents said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Clashes also raged in the southern port city of Aden between the rebels and fighters allied with exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, known as the Popular Resistance.

The southern fighters managed to push back the rebels in the coastal Ras Amran area, west of Aden, according to General Fadhel Hasan, a front man of the Popular Resistance.

'We have seized control of the area that represents the western entry into Aden,' he said, adding that the group 'received sophisticated weapons from the coalition.'

But the rebels prevented a convoy of desperately needed relief aid travelling from the western port city of Hodeida to enter Aden, said local relief activist Adnan al-Kaf.

Clashes also persisted in the central city of Taez and in the southern Shabwa province, where the Popular Resistance said 21 of its fighters were killed in three days of festivities.

The UN-proposed humanitarian truce

Air raids pounded Houthi and Yemeni army units in the capital Sanaa and in the embattled southern cities of Taiz and Aden, where residents also reported intense artillery exchanges between the fighters and local militiamen.

In Aden, one of the country's most deprived and war-torn areas, witnesses said Houthi forces fired mortars and Katyusha rockets toward opposition fighters based in northern areas and around the city's international airport.

Bombing by the Arab alliance and fighting have killed more than 3,000 people since March 26.

The Houthis, who hail from the Shi'ite Moslem sect, and their army allies say their spread throughout the country is part of a revolution against a corrupt government and hardline Sunni Moslem bandidos Death Eaters which they say are allied to the opposition forces, and they vowed to keep up the fight despite the truce.

All parties in Yemen's conflict had welcomed the announcement of the truce and called for it to be extended.

But the exiled government wants the Houthis to release prisoners and give up land it has seized in battle, while the Houthis say they doubt any calm will last.

Meanwhile residents in the eastern city of Mukalla said a suspected U.S. drone fired two missiles at cars carrying al Qaeda bandidos Death Eaters on Friday night, killing three including a big shot in the group, Abu Hajar al-Hadrami.

Turkey arrests 45 IS recruits in southeast: Report
[AlAhram] Turkish security forces have over the last three days detained 45 foreign nationals seeking to cross into Syria to join Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. jihadists from the southeastern city of Gaziantep, the Dogan news agency reported Sunday.

If confirmed, the detentions would mark a stepping up of pressure on IS by the Turkish authorities after the arrest of 21 suspected members of the group in Istanbul and elsewhere on Friday.

Gaziantep has long been seen as a staging post for IS recruits who travel to the city by bus after flying from their countries to Istanbul. They then make the short illegal journey over the border to Syria.

Dogan news agency said that on Sunday alone, 25 foreign nationals, mainly citizens of Tajikistan, had been locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
at Gaziantep bus station.

It said that police units had been working intensively at the bus station since Friday and had in total detained 45 people who wanted to cross into Syria to join IS.

Many would-be jihadists had also brought their families with them, it added.

The suspects have undergone health checks and are being interrogated, after which they will likely be deported.

In a separate operation, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
had on Friday detained 21 suspected members of IS, of whom three were foreigners, in several cities including Istanbul, state media said.

Western states have repeatedly accused Turkey of not doing enough to halt the flow of jihadists across its 911-kilometre (566-mile) border with Syria.

Turkey fiercely rejects the accusations, saying it is making every effort to secure a long border. In turn, it has accused the West of not playing its part to shoulder the burden of hosting 1.8 million refugees from Syria.

In an apparent bid to deflect criticism, Turkish authorities have arrested a number of suspected snuffies in recent months.

The latest arrests came after a two-day visit this week by a senior US delegation during which Turkey pledged more cooperation in the fight against IS jihadists in Syria.

Lakhvi will not provide voice samples to India, says lawyer
[DAWN] Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi
...an asset of the Pak govt and a big turban in Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is actually a redundant statement. Zak was the criminal mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai attack. Despite what India's provided there is not enough evidence in this world for a Pak court to convict him or even to keep him in the calaboose for very long...
, the alleged criminal mastermind of the Mumbai attacks in 2008, has refused to provide voice samples to India in relation to an investigation to indict him for involvement in the terror attacks on Indian soil, Hindustan Times reported on Sunday.

Lakhvi's lawyer -- Rizwan Abbasi -- told the Indian media outlet that according to Pakistain's laws, the accused's consent was necessary for a voice sample. "My client has refused in the past and will refuse again," said Abbasi.

The development comes only a couple of days after Pakistain's and India's premiers released a joint statement from Russia, vowing to expedite proceedings of the Mumbai attack case among other sticking points.

Lakhvi was released from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail in April this year, after a court ordered dismissal of detention orders issued against him by the Okara DCO on March 14.

The Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

government had previously maintained that Lakhvi was detained based on 'sensitive information' provided by intelligence agencies.

India condemned Lakhvi's release deeming it an "insult" to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai attack.

"This is a very disappointing announcement. An insult to the victims of 26/11 Mumbai attack. The global community should take serious note of Pakistain's double-speak on terrorism," said an Indian home ministry spokesperson who asked not to be named.

Lakhvi is among the seven persons charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail for their alleged involvement in Mumbai attacks are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid.

At the time of the attacks, Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LT) that has been accused by India of carrying out the attacks in India's financial capital.

Eight militants, four troops killed in clash
[DAWN] DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Eight suspected gunnies and four security personnel were killed in a clash in the Ladha area of South Wazoo tribal region on Saturday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, four security personnel were killed and six others injured after the Mehsud Taliban attacked a checkpost in the area.

The security forces retaliated and killed eight attackers. Security forces carried out a search operation in the area but no arrest was reported.

In 2009, the army launched an operation against the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain in the Mehsud tribe-dominated areas of South Waziristan and the region was cleared. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
sporadic festivities between security forces and suspected gunnies occur, particularly in Ladha, with the result that families displaced by the fighting are yet to return home.

Iraqi forces surround Fallujah and Ramadi, open corridor for civilians
[Rudaw] ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -- Iraq said Sunday its forces had surrounded the Islamic State

(ISIS) group in the towns of Fallujah and Ramadi in Anbar province, where they had opened a safe corridor for civilians before a planned assault to liberate the territories.

"Iraqi joint forces are on the alert to liberate the embattled towns of Fallujah and Ramadi in Anbar, but no timeframe has been set yet," said Brig. Yahia Rasoul, a front man of Iraq's defense ministry.

"The forces are considering the lives of civilians as thousands of innocents remain inside the towns," he said in a statement, adding that a safe corridor was being opened for civilians to leave Ramadi.

"In the past we were concerned about the innocent people in these areas, but for the coming military campaign we need victory at any cost," Rasoul declared, in an apparent warning thon the lam casualties are expected.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
the Anbar Operations Command announced a similar safe corridor in Fallujah.

"The Falahat path in the west of Falluijah will be helpful for the people of Fallujah and the sub-district of Saqlawiyah to flee," said Falih Issawi, a member of the Anbar provincial council.

After fleeing in the face of advancing ISIS fighters last summer, Iraqi forces have been fighting the Sunni murderous Moslems with the help of the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi militia, which is backed by Iran.

"There is a solid plan to liberate the ISIS-controlled towns of Ramadi and Fallujah,

and the Iraqi joint forces have good cooperation among themselves, including between the Hashd al-Shaabi tribal militias and the Iraqi Army," Jasim Matiwti, a member of the Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee told Rudaw earlier.

"Due to the random bombardments of the Iraqi fighter jets against ISIS positions inside Fallujah, more than 3,100 civilians have been killed and 575 others maimed -- including women and kiddies -- since June last year," he said.

According to information obtained by Rudaw, more than 85 percent of Anbar province -- Iraq's largest -- is held by ISIS.

Sunni-majority Fallujah, 69 kilometers west of Baghdad, has been under ISIS control since last summer. It has been besieged by the Iraqi Army, which has been continuously shelling the city to weaken the bully boys.

The unnamed source at the Jumhuriyah Hospital in Mosul told Rudaw that the hospital morgue received the bodies of the slain officers after the execution. The source added that they were all rubbed out.

Separately, ISIS executed former Iraqi Parliament candidate Ebrahim Saleh Badraniyeh.
Being ISIS means there are always people to execute.

Hashd al-Shaabi: 1K ISIS militants killed in one month
[Rudaw] Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi Shiite militias are claiming the group killed 1,000 ISIS bandidos snuffies in June,
...possibly this number is true, but I have no idea how probable...
and recently repulsed 40 of the bandidos snuffies at the Baiji oil refinery.

According to Brigadier General Ashem Al-Jabouri of Salahadin's Hashd al-Shaabi in a press statement, "Security forces progress well in Baiji and the joint forces fought a fierce battle in the north and south areas of Baiji, causing the death of 40 ISIS elements in the Sada district near the Baiji refinery."

Jabouri added that the Hashd al-Shaabi are also now placed in the presidential palace of Tikrit and will leave soon after a memorial for Iraqi security forces killed by ISIS at Camp Speicher.

Iraqi security forces were able to take control of Tikrit, a city located northwest of Baghdad, after it was seized by ISIS fighters, while Baiji north of Tikrit is still a center of fierce fighting.

Government claims of success in Baiji are frequent, and the exact situation on the ground is unclear, as ISIS offensives and seizures in the important refinery city are also frequently reported.

Peshmerga retake Yezidi village near Shingal

near Mount Shingal and reportedly killed 30 turbans of the group, according to a Kurdish military source Sunday.

Major General Hashem Sitayi, the Peshmerga commander in Shingal, told Rudaw that following an intense fight on Sunday morning Peshmerga forces retook Gabara village to the west of Sinjar City.

He added that the Peshmerga destroyed four ISIS military vehicles and 30 ISIS corpses were strewn over the ground.

According to the source, Yezidi fighters who previously controlled the village had abandoned the village one night before and ISIS gunnies entered the village.
One hopes it was a deliberate enticement of the bad guys into the kill box (if that is the correct terminology).
On Tuesday Kurdish forces repelled another Islamic State attack on Shingal City and killed more than 25 of the group's Lion of Islams.

ISIL Releases New Footage of 2014 Tikrit Massacre
[ALMANAR.LB] The so-called 'Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
group on Saturday released new footage of its June 2014 massacre of hundreds of military recruits in Tikrit.

The highest estimates put at 1,700 the number of cadets ISIL gunnies captured at the Speicher military base near Tikrit and executed at various locations, mostly in the city's former presidential palace complex.

The 22-minute video posted on the terrorist forums, which included both new and previously released footage, showed hundreds of executions, providing further evidence of the scope of the atrocity.

Some of the victims are shown pleading for their lives, attempting to explain they had only just joined the security forces.

The grisly footage showed executions on an industrial scale, with victims falling out of dump trucks and later lying side by side in shallow mass graves before being rubbed out one by one.

The killing went on into the night and the video showed an excavator being used to move piles of bodies.

Around 600 bodies have been exhumed since government and allied fighters retook Tikrit from ISIL in April but many of the victims were dumped into the Tigris river.

Combined with a call by the country's top holy man Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali al-Sistani for Iraqis to take up arms against ISIL, the Speicher massacre played a key role in the mass recruitment of Iraqi volunteers to fight the terrorists.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli soldier shot fleeing Palestinian
I saw the headline and my mind phrased it "Israeli soldier shot by fleeing Paleostinian." Or it could have been interpreted "Israeli soldier shot while fleeing Paleostinian." It wasn't until the third time through--and reading the article that I came around to "Israeli officer banged fleeing Paleostinian." I'm not too sure what they teach at the Columbia University School of Journalism, but it obviously ain't Headline Composition 101.
[WASHINGTONPOST] An Israeli human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
group released a video Sunday that purports to show a high-ranking Israeli officer fatally shooting a fleeing Paleostinian teenager who had thrown a rock at his vehicle, smashing its windshield.

The surveillance camera footage appears to undercut earlier claims by the military that the officer, Col. Israel Shomer, a brigade commander, opened fire on July 3 because his life was in danger.

The video released by the B'Tselem rights group shows a Paleostinian rushing at the vehicle, throwing an object at the windshield and running away. The vehicle then stops, a soldier jumps out, aims his gun and charges. The soldier's face cannot be seen clearly and the video has no sound.

The military earlier said that Shomer had exhausted "all measures" before firing at 17-year-old Mohammed al-Kusbah and released pictures of the vehicle's smashed windshield. On Sunday, the Israeli military said it was still investigating the shooting and declined to comment further.

Paleostinian Hospital physician Samer Saliba said at the time that al-Kusbah was shot in the face and back.

B'Tselem said the footage makes the military's earlier explanation "unreasonable" and called the killing "unlawful."

Israeli Authorities Release Sheikh Khader Adnan after 56-Day Hunger Strike
[ALMANAR.LB] The Zionist authorities overnight released a Paleostinian prisoner who staged a 56-day hunger strike while being detained for a year without charge, a spokeswoman said Sunday.

"Khader Adnan, who was in administrative detention, has been released," Sivan Weizman, a spokeswoman for the Zionist Prison Authority, said.

Adnan, 37, had been held for a year under administrative detention, which allows imprisonment without charge for renewable periods of six months indefinitely.

His hunger strike, which had brought him near death by the time it concluded last month, had sparked warnings from the Paleostinian government that it held the Zionist government responsible for his fate.

Adnan ended his hunger strike on June 28 after the Zionist authorities agreed to release him, at which point he was transferred to the hospital.

He was detained a year ago, shortly after the kidnapping and murder of three young Israelis, which triggered the arrests of hundreds of Paleostinians in the occupied West Bank.

He had previously gone on hunger strike for 66 days in 2012 to protest against his detention. He was released at the end of the protest, during which he had ingested vitamins and salt.

This time, he refused to swallow anything except water.

The Paleostinian government had warned it held the occupation authorities responsible for his fate, while the Zionist government in mid-June renewed efforts for legislation that would allow prisoners to be force-fed when their lives are in danger.

The Paleostinian leadership submitted a report to the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
last week that included the treatment of Paleostinian prisoners in the Zionist jails.

One Philippine soldier killed, one captured by NPA
[Inquirer] One Philippine soldier was killed while another was captured as "prisoner of war" by the New People's Army in a firefight in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental on Saturday.

Military spokesman Joe Patrick Martinez said troops engaged about 30 NPA militants in Barangay Alagatan late in the afternoon. He explained soldiers were in the community in response to a request by the village council for security assistance. Martinez said when the troops arrived in the area, they were "surprised about the presence of the NPA rebels inside the community."

A fierce gun battle broke out that lasted for about 20 minutes, killing a soldier. Two soldiers were also injured and one, who was hit in the leg, was seized by the fleeing insurgents. Two civilians were also injured after being caught in the crossfire.

A statement by North Central Mindanao Regional Command spokesman Ka Allan Juanito said that the attack was a punitive action against the alleged "psywar and intelligence operations" by the military in the community. He said, "The reactionary soldiers were playing basketball in the village center when they were raided by the NPA."

The NPA identified the captured soldier as 26-year-old Adonis Jess Maghanoy Lupeba, a resident of Cagayan de Oro City.

Blast damages citadel wall in Syria's UNESCO-listed Aleppo
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A bomb kaboom in a tunnel near Aleppo Citadel in Syria on July 12 damaged a wall of the fortress that is part of the UNESCO-listed Old City, state media and a monitor reported.

The blast partly destroyed the wall of the monumental 13th century citadel that overlooks the Old City, said the official SANA news agency and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"A powerful kaboom was heard after midnight Saturday. It was caused by the blowing up of a tunnel in the Old City near the Aleppo Citadel," the Observatory said.

"The blast caused the collapse of part of the wall of the citadel," said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

It was unclear who was behind the attack, he said, but it was immediately followed by festivities between rebels and government forces who are battling for control of the northern city.

SANA said "terrorists" blew up the tunnel, causing the damage to the historic citadel.

The Syrian government and its media describe as "terrorists" the various gangs who have been battling to oust Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

's regime since 2011.

Rebel fighters in Aleppo, Syria's second largest city and pre-war commercial hub, have often set off kabooms in tunnels that they have dug under military targets before launching attacks on them.

In March, rebels including Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, Al-Nusra Front, attacked a regime-held intelligence base in Aleppo by first denotating a tunnel kaboom and then battling the government forces.

For the past three years, Aleppo city has been divided between a government-held western sector and a rebel-held eastern one.

The rebels launched a major offensive in the first week of July to try to take territory on the western outskirts of the city.

The Aleppo Citadel, which contains the remains of mosques, a palace and bath buildings, is one of several sites in Syria on UNESCO's world heritage list.

One of the most famous is the ancient central city of Palmyra, which was seized by the jihadist Islamic State
