Arabia
23 Yemeni tribesmen killed
[Emirates 24/7] Fierce festivities overnight between rustics and troops loyal to embattled President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
left 23 rustics dead, a tribal source said on Tuesday.

"Twenty-three of our fighters were killed in fierce overnight festivities with the Republican Guard," said the source from the Bakil tribe, adding that the worst fighting was concentrated in the area of Sheheb Arhab.

The trouble began last week after the elite Republican Guard, which is led by Saleh's son, Ahmed, installed a checkpoint that allegedly harassed residents of the area that is considered the northeastern gate to Sanaa.

The source said troops chased rustics to their villages after few skirmishes, adding that the Republican Guard and the army had recently deployed reinforcements in Arhab, which lies 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside Sanaa.

Tribal sources claimed that the army was planning a war against the Bakil tribe, Yemen's largest confederation of smaller tribes.

But officials have claimed that gunnies belonging to opposition were plotting to take control of a nearby army base and the Sanaa airport.

Dozens were allegedly killed in festivities that erupted late July between armed rustics and the army at the nearby Samaa camp which the defence ministry claimed gunnies wanted to control in order to seize the international airport.

Deputy Information Minister Abdo Al Janadi accused Mansur Al Hanaq, a former member of the influential opposition Islamist Al Islah (Reform) party, of being behind the attack.

A military official said "these armed criminal elements aimed to control the Samaa camp in an attempt to take over Sanaa International airport as part of their plan to overthrow the constitutional legitimacy and seize power by force," according to defence ministry website 26sep.net.

The Republican Guard has been fighting tribes in various regions of Yemen as several of the heavily armed rustics sided with protesters demanding the ouster of Saleh since January.

The veteran leader has been under treatment in Soddy Arabia since early June, after he was maimed in a kaboom on his Sanaa compound.

Saleh vows to return to Yemen
Generalissimo Francisco Franco still dead. Film at eleven...
[Emirates 24/7] Yemeni President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
vowed to return to the country soon in a live video broadcast to supporters on Tuesday in the capital Sanaa.

In a speech to a meeting of tribes loyal to Saleh, who is recovering from an liquidation attempt in neighbouring Soddy Arabia, he invited the opposition to go to the ballot box to end Yemen's political crisis, which has dragged into its seventh month.

For a map, click here. For a map of Michoacan, click here

A total of eight armed suspects were killed in an early morning firefight with a unit of the Mexican Army in Michoacan Tuesday, according to Mexican news accounts.

A detachment of the Mexican 21st Military Zone was on a road patrol near the village of Tecario in Tacambaro municipality at around 0500 hrs when it encountered armed suspects travelling aboard several pickup trucks.

Armed suspects fired on the soldiers, who hen returned fire. The ensuing gun battle lasted several minutes and spread as suspects attempted to scatter to avoid capture. At least one suspects escaped the encounter. At least one report said one Mexican soldier was wounded in the firefight.

Michoacan was recently reinforced with 1,800 Mexican Federal agents along with additional army and Mexican Marines troops in an effort to deal with the new Caballeros Templarios drug cartel, an offshoot of the La Familia Michoacana drug cartel.

La Familia has been destroyed by constant attacks by Mexican security forces since the first of the year and by several high profile arrests of leaders.

Mexican Catholic Planned Terrorist Attack In Spain
A Mexican student was arrested in Madrid on Tuesday after posting his intention to attack anti-papal protestors with toxic gases, including sarin, on the internet.

A staunch Catholic, the man said that he could not allow protests against the pope. Benedict XVI is due to arrive in Madrid on Thursday ahead of a weekend of events to mark World Youth Day 2011.

Hundreds of thousands of Catholic faithful have already descended on the capital. The pontiff is scheduled to attend a welcome ceremony in the downtown Cibeles area on Thursday evening and to hold a Mass at the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome on Saturday night.

World Youth Day 2011 officially began on Tuesday, with a Mass in Cibeles presided over by the archbishop of Madrid, José Antonio María Rouco Varela. World Youth Day runs until Sunday August 21.

Since Tuesday, many of the city's main roads have been closed off due to the papal visit.

#7  To Rob:

It would be third time not second. THe was 311 in 2004 (there are enough funny things in the investigation to write several books) when the conservatives seemed poised for an easy win. And in 2008 a socialist city counselor was murdered by ETA just before the elections who seems to have tilted what looked to be a close race.

But given that the socialist candidate is traing by over 10% I fear something as big or bigger than in 2004.

#10  BP -- great quote from Roger L. Simon the other day:

So what this agnostic observes is a general atmosphere of religious phoniness — a baseline hypocrisy — on the liberal side and what is often genuine religious faith on the conservative side. (Not all, of course. A number of libertarians are agnostic.).

Frankly, I prefer honesty. So I respect Perry for his faith. And, again as we all know, this country was founded on bedrock principles of religious tolerance, which some modern liberals tend to forget includes people who actually believe in God. Personally, I admire Perry’s belief, even envy it to some extent, because I am reaching the point in life at which I would be delighted if someone could convince me of an afterlife.
Posted by: Pollyandrew || 08/17/2011 18:07 Comments || Top||

#11  I claim no exclusivity to any particular argument regarding rationality of belief in God (and thus the afterlife) - the theology and philosophy tomes are filled with masterful (Chriustian and otherwise) arguments for it -- I recommend you read "The Case For Faith" by Lee Strobel - someone who started exactly where you are, asking for the exact things you are asking. If you insist on something a bit more simple, apply Pascal's Wager as a starting point and simply give it a try.

I am reaching the point in life at which I would be delighted if someone could convince me of an afterlife.

In my personal experience, there is your problem. You need to decide to believe (or not). Its called faith for that very reason - its personal, an act of your own will, your "heart" as it were. I know that may not be what you wanted to hear.

I know, because I was in your shoes myself - and am a "late in life" Catholic convert (baptized and all that) from scientific "soft" atheist (in college) to Zen dabbler (loved mind games and koans) to agnostic (too lazy/coward to cut clean and either declare atheist or believer).

All you need to do is decide to believe, and commit to yourself to try to stand by it; and make a habit of belief and prayer. Expect to have doubts, expect to have severe ones sometimes. Myself, made me doubt a loving God would allow such evil as I have seen especially in the past decade. But keep your word to at least try to come back to believing.

In Christianity, remember "Doubting Thomas" as one example of how even an original apostle of Christ had doubts and lacked faith. And in the book of Mark, Ch 9 verse 24 there is the quote of the father of a boy who says to asks Christ to cure his son and is questioned about his belief by Jesus, with which the father answers "I do believe; help my unbelief!". As you can see belief is difficult, which is what you are encountering first hand.

It is said that faith is not achieved, it is given - and by asking for it, even in such an indirect method, you are already on the path there should you decide to keep going that way. Keep asking for faith, and you may be surprised that one day if you are willing to believe and make that "leap of faith", the opportunity will present itself.

My experience is that it aint easy but it is worth it.

The Grand Turk
PKK Attack kills 8 Turkish Soldiers
Eight Turkish soldiers have been killed in a suspected attack by Kurdish militants in the district of Cukurca in Hakkari province, close to the Iraqi border.

Officials and Turkish media said the troops died after their vehicle was hit by two remotely-controled roadside bombs, followed by a shoot-out.

Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). AFP news agency quoted Doldar Hammo, whom it described as a PKK spokesman, as saying his group had carried out the ambush.

There has been an increase in Kurdish rebel attacks since July.
There is an increase in anti-government attacks across the Muslim world; this is one of the few that does not seem driven by fundamentalist puppeteers - and I'm not so sure the PKK isn't a bunch of useful idiots too.
Posted by: Glenmore || 08/17/2011 08:12 || Comments || Link || [2 views] Top|| File under:

#1  The PKK began 30 years ago as a marxist-nationalist movement but the marxist part has nearly vanished.

They also are heavily involved in the drug trade.

Notwithstanding this, many of the Kurdish population support them, at least in part. Some of this support is the result of the heavy handed turkish discrimination.

US declares Haqqani network commander a terrorist
[Dawn] The B.O. regime designated a key jihad boy commander in southeastern Afghanistan as a terrorist Tuesday, freezing any assets he has in the United States and barring Americans from doing business with him.

The State Department said Mullah Sangeen Zadran is the shadow governor of Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province in southeastern Afghanistan and a commander in the Haqqani network.

A statement said Sangeen leads fighters in attacks and has helped hundreds of imported muscle enter Afghanistan. It also linked him to bombings and kidnappings of Afghans and foreigners in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistain.

Sangeen was also designated a terrorist by the UN, meaning he should be subject to a global travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo. The Haqqani network has ties to both al-Qaeda and the Taliban and has emerged as one of the biggest threats to stability in Afghanistan.

"These actions will help stem the flow of financial and other assistance to this dangerous individual," the State Department said.

Sangeen appears to be the same individual whom US-led forces claimed to have killed in an operation in 2007. The coalition said at the time that Sangeen was second-in-command to Siraj Haqqani and that he was responsible for roadside kaboomings and other attacks.

The Treasury Department designated four other individuals Tuesday as Islamic fascisti subject to US sanctions.

They include Umar Patek, a key suspect in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. Patek was captured six months ago in the same northwestern Pak town where the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now sometimes referred to as Mister Bones...
was killed, and was escorted home to Indonesia last week under tight security to stand trial.

Patek, 41, an al-Qaeda-linked Indonesian hard boy, had a $1 million bounty on his head when authorities caught up with him in Abbottabad _ just a few miles (kilometers) from where US commandos killed al-Qaeda chief bin Laden in a raid four months later.

The other individuals designated are Muhammad Jibril Abdul Rahman and Abdul Rahim Ba-asyir of Indonesia, and Mumtaz Dughmush, a Paleostinian.

Iraq
2 Iraqi soldiers killed, 4 civilians injured in Mosul
NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Two Iraqi soldiers have been killed and four civilians were injured in two separate incidents in the city of Mosul, the center of north Iraq’s Ninewa Province, on Tuesday, according to a security source.

“Two Iraqi soldiers were killed on Tuesday afternoon in an explosive charge blast against an Iraqi Army patrol in Qadisiya district, east of Mosul,” the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He said that four civilians were injured on Tuesday afternoon by a hand-grenade, tossed by unknown gunmen in central Mosul’s Nujaify Street, before they escaped to an unknown destination.

“The bomb blew up in a crowded book market, wounding the four civilians, including a 4-year-old child,” he added.

#1  Let's help these people.Yeah?

They need our help..our sympathy....come ON, people!

Don't we have an OBLIGATION to help these people? Don't we care?
True, its a Moslem country with Moslem values where they throw grenades into crowds of people they dont even know and then run away and eat cous-cous, but what the hell.

Its all Bush's fault, right?

And ask the MSmedia why they arent all over at the Palestine Hotel in downtown Baghdad covering this ? No money in it anymore? And didnt they tell us with a straight face that the US was losing the war....it was a quagmire JUST LIKE VIETNAM?

But now that the dead Muj are all out of sight and the Marines in Fallujah have gone back to Quantico and Pendleton....and the carcasses of Saddam and Zarquawi ( just where precisely ARE they buried, nobody says...) but so many of the Muj ( last I heard) are deliquescing in the sand like dog piss stains in the porch carpet.

And the drive up to Baghdad was covered by Baghdad Bob so brilliantly. And that defining moment when Saddam shot down the tube to the crowd chanting 'Muqtadr..muqtadr.." And then Mookie ran away to live in Iran. Nothing but memories.

And you never hear a peep out of the Democrats about how they were so brave through it all. But they are just surely being modest.

Southeast Asia
Four gunned down across southern Thailand
Terrorists Gunmen have gunned down four people, including an elderly school bus driver, in separate attacks across southern Thailand, police said Wednesday.

A Muslim rubber tapper, 34, was shot and killed during an ambush inside the plantation where he worked in Narathiwat province early Wednesday. Two other attacks on Muslims in different parts of the province on Tuesday, both drive-by shootings, killed a 28-year-old man returning from evening market and a 33-year-old woman who was travelling on a motorcycle with her husband.

Also on Tuesday in neighbouring Pattani province, a 68-year-old Buddhist man, who drives a school bus and is a local shop owner, was gunned down while on a morning bicycle ride.

Rivals suspected in attack on Filipino governor
[Straits Times] Political rivals and not Death Eaters may have staged a car kaboom that killed two people and maimed six but missed a Filipino governor traveling in a convoy in a violent southern region, officials said on Tuesday.

Maguindanao Gov Esmael Mangudadatu, who took office after many of his relatives were slain in the country's worst political massacre in 2009, was shaken but unhurt in Monday's attack in Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat Province.

His bullet-resistant van was leading a seven-vehicle convoy to his birthday celebration when a parked car laden with a 105 mm howitzer round blew up and struck the fourth vehicle in his entourage, police said.

Among the maimed was a Maguindanao provincial board member, who later died in a hospital. His son, whose foot was severed by the powerful blast, was at death's door. A bystander also was killed, Sultan Kudarat police chief Danilo Peralta said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Beddawi Doors Closed to Fatah al-Islam
[An Nahar] Paleostinian factions have taken precautionary measures to prevent the infiltration of Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Leb pot stirred.
turbans, who beat feet from Roumieh prison over the weekend, into Paleostinian camps in the north, the factions said in a statement.

They announced that joint security forces launched patrols at the Beddawi camp and closed all entrances to the shantytown.

The forces also took strong measures to control movements at the main gates and raised the level of alert to preserve the security and stability of the camp, the statement said.

It stressed the keenness of Paleostinian factions on the best of ties with Leb and on coordination with the involved security authorities in arresting the runaways.

The factions are also keen on keeping the camps clear of local and foreign disputes, the statement added.

Five prisoners, including Fatah al-Islam terrorists, beat feet Roumieh prison Saturday by scaling down the building's walls with bed sheets before mixing with visiting relatives and walking out of the compound with them.

The army announced late Saturday that it tossed in the calaboose one runaway in the northern port city of Tripoli.

Syrian Army Leaves Deir Ezzor after 10-Day Operation
[An Nahar] Dozens of Syrian army vehicles left the eastern protest hub of Deir Ezzor on Tuesday after a 10-day operation in which activists say up to 30 people were killed, an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist on a government tour of the city reported.

"The army conducted a quick and sensible operation in Deir Ezzor in order to restore stability and calm at the request of residents," who complained of "gangs," an officer told news hounds.

Syria has repeatedly said it is battling "armed gangs" -- a claim denied by rights groups who say the crackdown has killed 1,827 civilians since mid-March, while 416 security forces have also died.

In the first two weeks of August, since the start of the Mohammedan holy month of Ramadan, 260 people, including 14 women and 31 children, have been killed, according to a count by the protest coordinating committees.

#1  There are hints at Turk moves against Syria. And Hillary has been ignoring the muslim brotherhood threat in that country. Something is in the air. Maybe BHO wants to go into the next campaign as Lincoln-to-the-Syrians. We'll see how un-liberating islamonazism can be.

Latakia under Heavy Machine-Gun Fire
[An Nahar] Heavy machine-gun fire reverberated Tuesday across the Syrian Mediterranean port of Latakia, which is engulfed by a major military offensive, activists said.

"The heavy machine gun-fire and bullets were intense in areas of Latakia, Ramel, Masbah al-Shaab and Ain Tamra for more than three hours," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Since Sunday, 30 civilians have been killed in Latakia in an offensive that has seen use of gunboats by Syrian security forces for the first time since the start of pro-democracy revolts in mid-March.

Syrian official news agency SANA has denied any maritime operation.

U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the agency for Paleostinian refugees, reported that more than 5,000 refugees had decamped the Ramel camp in southern Latakia under fire.

The Syrian daily al-Watan said Tuesday Latakia was "under control" of the army.

"The situation (in Latakia) is under control, especially after the army tossed in the slammer dozens of gunnies during a complicated operation," it said.

"Armed men had set up barricades for laying mines to prevent the army from advancing," which "has led to residents fleeing the neighborhoods," the daily added.

Late Monday, a demonstrator was killed and 10 others maimed in the central city of Homs as security forces opened fire on the crowd, activists said.

In the nearby town of Qusayr, around 7,000 people called for the ouster of President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

's regime as they marched despite heavy presence of security forces, activists said.

Syria has repeatedly said it is battling "armed gangs" -- a claim denied by rights groups who say the crackdown has killed 1,827 civilians since mid-March, while 416 security forces also died.

The first two weeks of August, since the beginning of Ramadan, 260 people, including 14 women and 31 children have been counted dead by coordinating committees of demonstrators.

#8  ION WAFF > [Today's Zaman] TURKISH WARPLANES ATTACK PKK TARGETS IN IRAQ. Northern Iraq = Kantal + Zap regions.

* SAME > TURKEY'S PRESIDENT GUL SAYS TURKEY WON'T WAIT FOR END OF RAMADAN TO FIGHT TERRORISTS.

HMMMM, HMMMMM, on the surface this Turkish MilOp could appear to simply be Turkey's response to a deadly alleged Kurdish Rebel attack on a military convoy, BUT MY GUTS ARE TELLING ME ITS MORE A REAL-TIME DEMONSTRATION WARNING TO SYRIA + ALLY IRAN.

Turkey has repor demanded to know from Syria = Assad regime iff its recently ordered pullback of mechanized, armored ground units from was intended to be a degrading/insulting ruse by Syria agz them.

* Also from WAFF > WIKILEAKS: TURKEY WAS PREPARED TO LAUNCH MILITARY OPERATIONS AGZ RUSSIA [back in 2008 = Russo-Georgia War in support of NATO ally Georgia iff Russia had invaded ADJARA REGION].

------------

* MIDDLE EAST ONLINE > ISLAMISTS, LEFTISTS UNITE AGZ JORDAN CORRUPTION.

Uh, uh, "LEFTISTS" = ASIAN MAOISTS = COMMIES/MARXISTS-FOR-ISLAM IN THE TRANSJORDAN???

just sayin'.

* SAME > TEN YEARS ON, AL QAEDA WOUNDED BUT NOT SLAIN.

Artic fails to mention also trying hard to go Nukulaar.

* WORLD NEWS > OFFICIALS: EGYPT TO TARGET AL-QAEDA CELLS SAID TO BE TRAINING IN SINAI.

Cairo sending in Army-Police forces.

Lest we fergit, + exclusive of the PA in Gaza-West Bank, SINAI'S MUSLIM BEDOUINS = are TRYING TO ORGANIZE THEIR OWN PRO-SOVEREIGNTY/AUTONOMY NATIONALIST MOVEMENTS, which both Egypt + Saudi Royals are steadfastly against. ISRAEL, HOWEVER, AFAIK IS "TWITCHY" = STILL OBSERVING THE SINAI SITUATION.
