Afghanistan
Suicide Bomber Kills 6 in Afghan Capital
[VOA] Afghan officials say a teenage jacket wallah went kaboom!" near NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
headquarters in the capital, Kabul, Saturday, killing at least six civilians, including street children.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan condemned the bombing, saying such acts "exploit vulnerable individuals" and coerce them into "committing horrible acts."

Kabul police said the bomber was 14 years old.

The Taliban grabbed credit for the attack but said the bomber was a man in his 20s. A front man said the target of the blast was the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul also condemned Saturday's attack. It said if reports that the attacker was a teenager are true, the Orcs and similar vermin reveal they are willing to use "the most impressionable and vulnerable" to carry out their attacks.

Officials say several Western embassies are located near the blast site.

Interior Ministry front man Sediq Sediqqi suggested the bombing may have been the work of the Haqqani network, considered one of the most dangerous myrmidon groups fighting U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. The Pakistain-based network has been blamed for a number of high-profile attacks in the Afghan capital, including an attack on the U.S. Embassy last year. On Friday, the United States announced it is declaring the group a terrorist organization.

Sudan bolsters army, imposes curfew in Darfur after attack
[Al Ahram] Gunmen killed seven people in Sudan's Darfur region during an attack on a government official's motorcade, prompting the authorities to impose a curfew and close schools, state media said on Thursday.

Darfur has been plagued by violence since rebels took up arms in 2003, complaining the central government had neglected the remote western territory.

While violence is down from its peak in 2003 and 2004, law and order have collapsed in parts of the vast territory and banditry, tribal fighting and festivities between rebels and government forces have continued.

On Tuesday afternoon, unknown gunnies opened fire on a motorcade carrying the commissioner of North Darfur state's Kutum area, state news agency SUNA said. The attack in Kutum town killed a guard and two police, the agency added, quoting North Darfur state governor Osman Mohamed Youssef Kibir.

Two police were also killed by "sniper fire" in the town market, the report said, adding two civilians had also been killed. The report said 21 people were maimed.

Gunmen also attacked local police buildings, stole two cars, and burned two others, it said.

The state government took emergency measures including withdrawing regular police forces from Kutum town, relocating the leadership, and reinforcing an army unit in the area, said SUNA.

All schools in Kutum would be closed "until further notice," it said. Carrying guns in all the state's cities "except in necessary cases" would be banned and a curfew in Kutum would be imposed from 6pm to 7am, it added.

Senior army officer Mohamed Kamel Mohamed Nour was appointed to "oversee the administrative and operational management" of the Waha and Kutum regions temporarily, it said.

Violence spiked in the region on August 1, when gunnies killed the local leader of the Al-Waha region, the report said.

Gunmen later surrounded a camp for displaced people in Kassab, burnt down a cop shoppe and looted the main market, a peacekeeping mission there said at the time.

The International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
has indicted Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and issued an arrest warrant for Defence Minister Abdel Raheem Muhammad Hussein to face charges of war crimes in Darfur, charges they deny.

The government signed a Qatar-brokered peace deal with small Darfur rebel groups a year ago but the main rebel groups have refused to join.

Grenade attack in Somalia's Baidoa kills 1, injures 3
(Sh. M. Network)--A grenade attack at a house in Somalia's third largest strategic town of Baidoa has left one dead and three injured late on Thursday night, according to witnesses and police officials.

Police in turn blamed the kaboom on the Shebab, with police Chief Mahad Abdirahman saying the group had tried to kill innocent people in the house, but survived the attack.

"As we know One person died and 3 people were maimed when a grenade was thrown by unknown attackers into a house in the heart of Baidoa last at about 08:30 pm local time," a witness said.

Gunmen Attack Police Station near Egypt's Border with Gaza
[An Nahar] Gunmen fired at a cop shoppe in Egypt's North Sinai on Saturday, but there were no casualties, security officials told AFP.

The gunnies, riding in two vehicles, shot up the Sheikh Zuwayyid cop shoppe near Egypt's border with the Gazoo Strip at dawn, the officials said.

"Police officials shot back and the exchange of fire continued until they (the gunnies) fled," they said, adding that "There were no injuries sustained during the exchange of fire."

The cop shoppe had not been operational for around 18 months after it was attacked during the uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
in February 2011.

The building was restored and functioning again on August 8, officials said.

The Egyptian military and police have bolstered their presence in the lawless peninsula to battle Islamist bully boyz after gunnies killed 16 soldiers at a border outpost on August 5.

Egypt Army Says Killed 32 'criminals' in Sinai
[An Nahar] Egypt's armed forces have killed 32 "criminal elements" in an ongoing operation against Islamists in the lawless Sinai peninsula, a military front man said on Saturday.

Colonel Ahmed Mohammed Ali told news hounds that 38 people including "non-Egyptians" had been tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
during "Operation Sinai," which was launched on August 7, days after gunnies killed 16 soldiers at a border post there.

"The operation will continue until its goals have been achieved... These are not just military goals but also developmental goals for the Sinai," Ali said.

The statements were likely to unnerve Israel, which had expressed "reservations" over Egypt's deployment of reinforcements in the peninsula, with which it shares a border.

But Ali insisted that "the deployment of the armed forces, on all the territory of Sinai, is not a violation of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel."

"Our presence (in Sinai) is in the frame of coordination," with the Israelis, Ali said.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said last week he expected the Egyptian army to withdraw its reinforcements from the peninsula at the end of the operation.

In addition to the two maimed soldiers, a reserve forces member was hit, he added.

The army launched an all-out offensive in May, forcing al-Qaeda to withdraw from towns it had captured in Abyan last year, but the network maintains a strong presence in the region.

On Wednesday, a tribal leader and a local official of Abyan survived an liquidation attempt as al-Qaeda Death Eaters installed an ambush.

Local sources said that a prominent tribal leader Mohammad Sokain and a member of the local authorities Ahmed Aidros survived the ambush in Al-Wadaia area of Abyan.

The incident came after a meeting held by tribal leaders presided over by Sokain with the aim of drawing a map to combat terrorism in Abyan.

Sokain told media outlets that he was threatened several times by unidentified persons through phone calls.

Al-Qaeda restored to use other tactics as it assassinated a number of Yemeni military commanders and officers and carried out suicide kabooms against military and security institutions in the capital Sana'a and other cities.

Early of August, al-Qaeda killed at least 45 people and wounding dozens more in the deadliest attack since the army declared victory over Death Eaters in June.

Last Friday, a senior Yemeni military officer, Brigadier Omar Barasheed, was killed when a bomb planted in his car went kaboom! in the southeastern city of Mukalla in an attack blamed on al Qaeda.

Security officials said that the authorities foiled many plans to carry out terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda in the capital Sana'a, affirming that seized 40 belts packed with explosives.

Yemen Arrests 28 Militants in South

In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
, the defense ministry reported on Saturday.

Senior Al-Qaeda leaders were among the tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
, the ministry's mouthpiece, the September 26 website, said quoting a statement by Abyan government Jamal Al-Aqil.

"A hunt is continuing for some beturbanned goons who are still hiding in remote and rigged areas in Abyan," the governor said.

The statement coincided with renewed festivities between the armed forces and Al-Qaeda beturbanned goons in the Shoqra city, in which several beturbanned goons and soldiers were killed.

Also, the forces seized cars and cycle of violences which were owned by beturbanned goons after festivities in Zinjibar and Jaar, it said, adding that one of the pro-government fighters was killed in the battles.

In May, the army with direct support from the US launched an offensive and drove Al-Qaeda beturbanned goons out of their strongholds in the key towns in Abyan and Shabwa which were seized in mid-2011. Hundreds of beturbanned goons including big shots were killed in the offensive.

Since the victory, the authorities have tossed in the slammer

many beturbanned goons and cells in a continuous, massive hunt for the remaining operatives.

In what appeared to be retaliation for the severe blows, Al-Qaeda has stepped up deadly bombings in main cities including the capital Sanaa targeting military and security chiefs, personnel and offices.

Yemen Seizes Stash on Way to Saudi Kingdom
[Yemen Post] The border guard in western Yemen seized on Saturday 300 kg of hashish that smugglers had planned to sell in the kingdom of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
, the interior ministry reported.

The stash was seized on the Thu Hirab island in the Midi district, it said, pointing out that the hashish quantities were concealed inside 6 bags.

Two Æthiopian smugglers were cooled for a few years
Please don't kill me!
, it said, adding that the two and the hashish were given to the army battalion in the Luhaya district as a prelude to hand them over to the police in Hodeida province, the ministry added.

In recent years, Yemen has been as a transit hub to smuggle drugs coming from other countries including Pakistain and Iran to Gulf countries.

Earlier this year, the authorities destroyed tonnes of drugs worth millions of US dollars that were seized last year.

In the past few years, tens of smugglers including Yemenis, Africans, Iranians and Paks were cooled for a few years
Please don't kill me!
in some Yemeni cities while trading in and smuggling drugs.

Some of them went on trials and received sentences including death ones.

Armed men storm Parliament
[Yemen Post] Armed men affiliated to members of parliament Mohahmad al-Shaif and Azeez Bin Sagheer stormed on Monday the parliament's court and entered to its hall.

Eyewitnesses affirmed that guards surrounding al-Shaif stormed the parliament's hall, pointing out that the parliament's guards welcomed al-Shaif and his guards and allowed them to enter without any resistance.

Yemeni analysts said this event aimed to provoke turmoil, describing it as a crime, singling out that this reaction of Al-Shaif came after government documents showed last week that al-Shaif still refuses to settle millions of Yemeni rials as fees of electricity services. Al-Shaif and Bin Sagheer are among the most loyal tribal leaders to the former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
Last year, militias of Bin Sagheer engaged in fight to the side of Saleh against followers of Hashid's tribal leader, Sadeq al-Ahmar, in Al-Hasabah and Sufan areas of the capital Sana'a.

Yemen's government previously demanded to revoke immunity of the member of Al-Shaif on ground of insulting Prime Minister Mohammad Salem Basindwa and threatening Finance Minster Sakhr Al-Wajih.

Al-Shaif who is a big shot of the General People threatened Al-Wajih with beating, saying that he did not recognize the Yemeni government and describing its members as toys.

Members of parliament expressed sorrow about insults used by Al-Shaif, pointing out that some sides seek to break down reconciliation reached by Yemenis and ignite conflict.

While tribal leaders in Yemen are accused of committing violations, abusing people, breaching laws, imposing tributes and looting lands, they receive monthly salaries and other privileges from the government and even from foreign countries.

Houthis Fight Tribes, Take over Schools, Public Offices in Yemen, Site
[Yemen Post] Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is "God is Great, Death to America™", Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews" ...
fighters took over five schools, a medical center and a cop shoppe and destroyed a number of homes and water wells in Yemen's Amran province as tensions renewed between the Shiite Houthi Group and tribes, Alahale reported on Thursday.

The website said the Houthi fighters have set up seven checkpoints and are now checking all cars and passersby after battles have recently erupted between them and the Qaflat Othar tribes in Amran.

The battles reemerged after Houthi fighters assassinated a primitive from a tribe which led a mediation to end the battles between the Houthi Group and tribes in the province, it said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell...
Alahale quoted local sources as saying the number of those who have been killed in the recent battles was more than 30 people.
In the past few weeks, Houthi were reportedly to have killed two travelers from the southern Lahj province while in Amran. The two victims were tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
, killed and then their bodies were transported to near a military camp to claim they were killed in battles with the forces, according to the website.

Houthis also killed a construction worker in the Qafalt Othar area after accusing him of spying for the United States of America, it said, giving no more details.

The Shiite Houthi Group, which fought the national forces six times--the latest in 2009, has since been clashing with tribes in Hajjah province and other provinces adjacent to Saada province.

Most of the festivities ended through tribal mediations.

The group, which the former regime said was receiving support from Iranian groups, joined the popular uprising in early 2011 and accepted months ago to participate in a comprehensive national dialogue under the West-backed power-transfer deal.

2 killed in Rab 'crossfire'
[Bangla Daily Star] Two alleged gang members of notorious Mortuza Bahini were killed in a "shootout" with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Sharankhola range of the East Sundarbans in Bagerhat yesterday.

Rab-8 Deputy Commander Maj Sabbir Rahman Osmani said they led a drive in Narikel Baria area in the morning on information that the gang members of Mortuza Bahini were sticking around that place.

He said around 12:00 noon, the Rab team on suspicion asked a boat on Chhapra Canal to stop. But the gang on board opened fire on the law enforcers and took position in a nearby woods. The Rab members and the robbers exchanged fire for over half an hour.

Later, Rab recovered the two bodies after their associates had expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

Rab said they recovered 12 firearms including a rocket launcher and seven foreign-made light guns (LG), and one magazine and 33 bullets from the spot.

Quoting Rab, Bagerhat Police Superintendent Rafiqul Islam said the shootout took place between 12:00 noon and 1:00pm. "Rab sought police assistance later around 3:00pm."

Sharankhola police took the bodies in the afternoon and will sent those to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital today.

Forest officer Mihir Kumar Do of East Sundarbans said he heard about the death of two people in a shootout. But the forest department's security guards did not take part in the drive, he added.

Rab says several hundred fishermen were kidnapped from the Sundarbans areas this hilsha season by the gangs allegedly led by Mortuza, Sagar and Shahidul.

Of the fishermen, 14 were rescued by Rab in different drives. In addition, in the face of joint drives by the Navy and the Coast Guard, robbers had released many fishermen while some returned home after paying ransom.

Mexico arrests suspect in Fast and Furious killing of Brian Terry
[Fox News] Mexican federal police announced Friday that they have enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, por favor!
a suspect in the killing of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, the slaying at the center of the scandal over the botched U.S. gun-smuggling probe known as Operation Fast and Furious.

Jesus Leonel Sanchez Meza is one of the five men charged with killing Terry in December 2010 during a shootout in Arizona near the Mexico border. One is on trial in Arizona and the other three remain runaways. Sanchez was enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
Thursday in Sonora state.

Two guns found at the scene were bought by a member of a gun-smuggling ring that was being monitored in the Fast and Furious investigation. Critics have knocked U.S. federal authorities for allowing informants to walk away from Phoenix-area gun shops with weapons, rather than immediately arresting suspects.

"This is a long-awaited arrest and a great development in the murder investigation of Brian," Robert Heyer, Terry's cousin and chairman of the Brian Terry Foundation, said in statement on behalf of the family.

"To the extent closure can ever be realized this is an important part of the process. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the key issue of government accountability remains. Why was the operation that killed Brian authorized and who will be held to account? These questions must be answered no matter how high we must look to get them. The family looks forward to the pending Inspector General's report," he said.

Iraq
Widespread insurgent attacks kill at least 44 in Iraq
Insurgents killed at least 44 people in a wave of attacks against Iraqi security forces on Sunday, gunning down soldiers at an army post and bombing police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs, officials said.

The violence, which struck at least 11 cities and wounded nearly 240 people, highlighted militant attempts to sow havoc in the country and undermine the government.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but security forces are a frequent target of al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before US troops withdrew from the country last year.

Iraq Attacks Kill Nine People
[An Nahar] Attacks in Iraq, including a series of apparently coordinated bombings against Shiite places of worship in the north, killed at least nine people on Friday, security and medical officials said.

A car boom targeted the Khezal al-Tamimi husseiniyah, or Shiite place of worship, in central Kirkuk at about 12:55 pm (0955 GMT), followed by a bombing at Imam Ali husseiniyah in the city's northeast, and three bombings at Al-Mustafa husseiniyah in south Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
security and medical officials said.

A roadside kaboom meanwhile went kaboom! at Al-Ahmedi Sunni mosque.

Sadiq Omar Rasul, the head of Kirkuk health directorate, told AFP that eight people were killed and 80 maimed in the attacks.

And in Baquba, north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, gunnies armed with silenced weapons rubbed out a soldier while a woman and two children were maimed when a roadside kaboom went kaboom! outside their house in Saadiyah, further east, security and medical officials said.

An AFP correspondent saw the burned bodies of two children and dozens of burned-out cars at Al-Mustafa husseiniyah in Kirkuk.

Hadi Qanbar, who had been praying at Al-Mustafa husseiniyah, said that worshipers were told about the attack on Khezal al-Tamimi and began to leave.

"But when we left, kabooms happened one after another," he said. "We do not know why we were targeted."

Azhar Kamal, who was also at Al-Mustafa husseiniyah, said: "We put the blood of the victims on the hands of the prime minister, and we ask him to protect the people of Kirkuk."

Hassan Hussein, who was at Khezal al-Tamimi at the time of the attack, said the kaboom happened behind the husseiniyah.

"We saw our brothers and friends killed and maimed by this kaboom," he said.

Khezal al-Tamimi husseiniyah is the site of powerful Shiite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr

Violence in Iraq is down dramatically from its peak between 2006 and 2008, but attacks remain common with 278 people killed in August, according to an AFP tally based on reports from security officials and medics.

Iraqi Killed, Four Wounded by Syria Mortar Fire
[An Nahar] Mortar rounds or rockets fired from Syria killed a young Iraqi girl and maimed four people in a border town in western Iraq, an army officer and the interior ministry said on Saturday.

Captain Ali Juwayir from Anbar Operations Command said four mortar rounds hit al-Qaim shortly before midnight on Friday, adding that two homes in the town were struck.

Juwayir said a four-year-old girl was killed and four other people were maimed, a toll confirmed by Dr. Mustafa Shawki of al-Qaim hospital.

The Iraqi interior ministry, meanwhile, said in a statement that "four rockets launched from the Syrian side... resulted in the wounding and martyrdom of some of our citizens."

It did not provide details on the casualties.

"Iraq has maintained a stance of neutrality on the Syrian conflict," the statement said, but "our brave forces are ready to... respond in the event of a repetition such as this aggression."

Al-Qaim lies across the border from Albu Kamal, which has been the scene of fighting between Syrian soldiers and fighters opposed to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, two children were killed early on Friday when Albu Kamal was shelled.

On Wednesday, Death Eaters attacked Hamdan military airport near Albu Kamal, the Observatory said.

Suspects Reveal Terror Plot on Indonesian Parliament
[An Nahar] Arrested Indonesian terror suspects have revealed plots on the parliament building and to attack police in the name of jihad, a bigwig said Friday.

Two different terror groups planned to attack the country's parliament in Jakarta and plotted bomb and gunfire attacks on police in the central Java city of Solo, the country's counter-terrorism agency's chief Ansyad Mbai said.

"We worked with the anti-terror police squad to intensify hunting for suspects still on the lam and also stepped up security measures to anticipate any possible attacks," he told Agence La Belle France La Belle France.

Bayu Setiono, 22, who was incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
following a shootout last week in Solo that left two terrorist suspects and an anti-terror officer dead, said his group plotted more attacks.

"Our plan is to break up Solo like what happened in Ambon and Poso. We want to uphold Islamic Sharia and create a Moslem caliphate in Indonesia," he said referring to violence between Moslems and Christians, killing thousands in early 2000.

In an interrogation video released by police on Thursday, Setiono said they targeted police as they were considered as infidels for arresting and killing Islamist hard boys.

Another terror suspect said he surveyed the parliament building three times before he was incarcerated

by police in July, the senior anti-terror official Mbai told AFP without giving details about what stage the plot had reached.

"There are several small groups which their underground works are not related to each other, but they all came from the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and the Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT)," he added.

JAT, dubbed a terrorist organization by the United States, was founded in 2008 by incarcerated

Severe Water Shortage in Aleppo after Pipe Destroyed
[An Nahar] Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
was suffering from severe drinking water shortages on Saturday after a main pipeline was destroyed in a northern district of the city, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"A main water line was destroyed near the water department in Bustan al-Basha. This is very important because it provides drinking water to the whole city," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse by phone.

"We cannot say how it was ruptured, but there were air strikes and festivities between the army and rebels in the area," he added.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of opposition activists on the ground, blamed the pipe burst on regime air attacks.

In a video released by the LCC, torrent of water can be seen flowing through rubble-covered streets and into the ground floor of a building.

A description of the video said a regime plane "destroyed the main drinking water supply for the city of Aleppo and floods of water have covered most of the streets in Midan and Bustan al-Basha" districts.

A local resident told AFP by phone that half of the city was without water, with the cuts felt most in the east and north.

"There is a problem, but I don't know what kind of problem it is. We cannot send a team or inspect or repair it right now," the head of the local water department told journalists.

Fierce festivities broke out earlier on Saturday as rebels tried to storm the regime-controlled district of Midan from their stronghold in Bustan al-Basha, a local military source said.

Syria Army Repels Rebel Attack on Aleppo Barracks
[An Nahar] Syrian troops backed by tanks and helicopters repelled a rebel attack on an army base in the northern city of Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
on Saturday after a 20-hour battle, military officials and witnesses said.

The government forces pushed rebels out of the Hanano military base, a fortress-like compound in the east of the city, parts of which rebels claimed to have captured on Friday, they said.

"There are a lot of victims on both sides," a witness told AFP.

A military official in Aleppo, Syria's second city and commercial hub, said soldiers destroyed six armored vehicles which rebels were using to transport weapons seized in the barracks.

"The rebels had thrown themselves full wholeheartedly into this offensive because they desperately need weapons," the army source said on condition of anonymity.

The Hanano base serves as a weapons storage depot, a conscript recruitment center and also houses the headquarters of the local branch of the military police and anti-riot police.

According to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, rebels on Friday stormed the area reserved for conscript recruitment.

At least 18 soldiers and four rebels were killed in Friday's fighting, according to the Observatory.

There were no immediate reports of casualties for the overnight battles during which the army pushed back the rebels.

Brigades of the rebel Free Syrian Army took part in the offensive, a rebel commander who identified himself as Abu Omar had told AFP on Friday.

He said the goal of the operation was to liberate Hanano, cut strategic supply lines and put a stop to shelling that has caused high civilian casualties in Aleppo.

FSA media coordinator Abdullah Yasser said the assault aimed to take down one of three main positions used by the army to shell rebel-held areas, which are concentrated in the east of Aleppo.

"Hanano is one of the main places from which they are shooting, so taking it over could be a turning point for us," he told AFP.

Also on Saturday, troops and rebels clashed elsewhere in and around the city of Aleppo, the capital Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
and other parts of the country, the Observatory said.

It said rebels attacked a military checkpoint northwest of the besieged city, with five fighters reportedly killed when their unit tried to overtake the army position in Al-Layramoon industrial district.

Several members of the government forces were also "killed and maimed" in the attack, it added.

Later, warplanes bombarded the town of Anadan, northwest of Aleppo, in an apparent retaliatory strike, the Observatory added.

Elsewhere in the northern city, two rockets fired by "terrorists" struck a church and a convent in the Christian neighborhood of Aziziyeh, according to state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Government forces also shelled the rebel neighborhoods of Al-Hajar Al-Aswad and Tadamun in southern Damascus at dawn on Saturday, the Observatory said.

There was also violence in the flashpoint central city of Homs where at least one rebel fighter was killed in festivities while 12 troops died in fighting in Hara, a town in the southern province of Daraa, it added.

Troops also pounded rebel positions in Albu Kamal in eastern Syria, shelling areas around the Hamdan military airport -- which rebels had attacked earlier in the week, the Observatory said.
