Afghanistan
Kabul standoff continues into night
[Al Jazeera] Taliban gunnies armed with boom jackets and heavy weaponry have launched co-ordinated attacks in the Afghan capital Kabul, targeting NATO's
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
headquarters, the US embassy, and the Afghan intelligence agency.

Heavy gunfire continued to be heard late into the night on Tuesday as Afghan forces battled to clear a building in the city's diplomatic quarter which had been taken over by heavily armed fighters. Rockets have reportedly been fired at the US and other embassies in the area.

At least four coppers and two civilians have been killed and 18 others injured, according to police and hopsital sources.

Police have surrounded the occupied building, calling in air support to end a siege carried out by gunnies resisting inside the building.

NATO has confirmed that they are providing Afghan forces ground and air support in the operation.

Al Jizz's Abdullah Shahood, reporting from Kabul, said the police had cleared three stories of the building, but the gunfired continued.

"As we speak right now, the attack is still ongoing. There are two fighters still in the building and Afghan forces are trying to clear the building," he said.

He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
, the Afghan president, condemned the attacks and and said it could not not hamper the security transition from NATO to Afghan forces.

"The attacks cannot stop the process (transition) from taking place and cannot affect, but rather embolden our people's determination in taking the responsibility for their country's own affairs," Karzai said in a statement.

Multiple kabooms

Only an hour after the attack near the US embassy, heavy kabooms were heard in other parts of the city.

Just a few kilometres away in the west of Kabul, a jacket wallah let 'er rip near a police building, killing one policeman.

A second suicide bomber maimed two people when he let 'er rip near Habibia high school also in the west of the city.

"The primary targets of the attackers are the intelligence agency building and a ministry," Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, told the Rooters news agency on Tuesday from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

The US embassy in Kabul says no personnel have been reported injured.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul was also one of the targets in the ongoing Taliban attack in the centre of the city, a Western military source told the AFP new agency .

Mohammad Zahir, head of Kabul's Crime Investigation Unit, said: "There has been an kaboom and gunfire, there are several armed attackers in Abdul Haq Square. There could be suicide bombers but it is unclear at the moment."

Police and other security officials blocked roads around the US embassy and other diplomatic missions.

Besieged Bani Walid residents told to flee
[Al Jazeera] Libyan rebels battling the remnants of Muammar Qadaffy
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years...
's forces in his remaining stronghold of Bani Walid have given residents there two days to leave before a threatened assault.

The warning came on Tuesday amid fears for the fate of civilians trapped in the last redoubts of Qadaffy, dislodged from power and now on the run after 42 years as leader of the oil-rich nation.

"I think only 10 per cent of the people are Qadaffy supporters. They are fanatics. And the rest are waiting to be liberated. We have given them two more days to leave the city," Abumuslim Abdu, a fighter with the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC), told the Rooters news agency.

Forces of the NTC that overran the capital, Tripoli, on August 23 have met unexpectedly stiff resistance in five days of fighting for Bani Walid, 180km southeast of Tripoli.

The town - along with Qadaffy's home city of Sirte on the Mediterranean coast and Sabha in the remote southern desert - counts among the last strongholds of the former regime.
The resistance has impeded NTC efforts to normalise life in Libya.

Residents fleeing Bani Walid have reported days of intense firefights, and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
warplanes were backing up NTC fighters with air strikes on pro-Qadaffy rocket positions.

Families trapped there for weeks started to slip out after Qadaffy forces abandoned some checkpoints on the outskirts, and dozens of cars packed with civilians streamed out of the area on Monday and Tuesday.

NTC rally

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter awoke groggily, his hand still stuck in the Ming vase...
Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the head of the NTC, urged a cheering crowd in Tripoli to strive for a civil and democratic state.

Abdul-Jalil addressed a crowd of thousands in Martyr's Square, a site that until recently was famous for pro-Qadaffy rallies.

Flanked by a few dozen revolutionary leaders in their largest public gathering since their forces stormed the capital, the NTC chief called on Libyans to build a democratic state based on Islamic law.

"We seek a state of law, prosperity and one where sharia [Islamic law] is the main source for legislation, and this requires many things and conditions," he said, adding that "extremist ideology" would not be tolerated.

"No retribution, no taking matters into your own hands and no oppression. I hope that the revolution will not stumble because of any of these things."

From an unknown hideout, Qadaffy urged his remaining followers to keep up the fight.

"It is not possible to give Libya to the colonialists again," he said in a statement read out on Syria-based Arrai Oruba television. "All that remains for us is the struggle until victory and the defeat of the coup."

The United Nations
...an organization whose definition of human rights is interesting, to say the least...
said it was worried about the plight of civilians stranded inside besieged pro-Qadaffy towns.

"Our big concern right now is Sirte, where we are receiving reports that there's no water and no electricity," Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, told Rooters in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

Some NTC fighters said they suspected local forces of the Warfalla tribe, Libya's largest, were passing tips to Qadaffy forces in Bani Walid.

"We believe there are traitors among them," said Mohammed el Gahdi, from the coastal city of Khoms.

Ahmed Bani, the NTC military front man, told news hounds the plan for Bani Walid for now was to wait.

"When our forces entered Bani Walid they found the brigades of Qadaffy using citizens as shields," he said, adding that missile launchers had been placed on the roofs of homes, making it difficult for NTC forces or NATO warplanes to strike.

China Gives Official Recognition to NTC As Libya's Legitimate Government
[Tripoli Post] China has become the last major power to recognise the Libya's National Transition Council as the country's ruling body and legitimate government of following the overthrow of Muammar Al Qadaffy.
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years...
China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Tuesday that Libya's provisional government has promised to uphold all the agreements that Beijing signed with the country before the overthrow of Al Qadaffy, and the NTC "would honour and abide by all existing bilateral treaties and agreements."

China became the last member of the UN Security Council to formally recognise the NTC as the ruling authority of Libya. But Jiang said China wants more information before it backs the release of more of Libya's assets that were frozen since the start of the conflict in mid-February

China, that had previously criticised the NATO-led
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
air campaign against Al Qadaffy's forces and refused to condemn the former dictator, is a large investor in Libya, with 26 Chinese companies taking on an estimated $19 billion in business.

China had previously been linked to possible military sales to Al Qadaffy that would violate a UN arms embargo. China has confirmed the talks, but said no deals were signed and no arms were shipped. There is no indication the Chinese government played a role in the contacts with the weapons makers.

It has now says it "respects the choice of the Libyan people".

Chinese foreign ministry front man Ma Zhaoxu said China attaches great importance to the role of the NTC and has been in close contact with it.

Ma said in a statement that China hopes that all treaties and agreements signed with Libya will remain in effect and implemented in earnest.

China sent only a vice foreign minister to a conference in Gay Paree earlier this month aimed at mapping out Libya's future, while other countries sent more senior representatives and even heads of government, such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy
...23rd and current President of the French Republic and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra. Sarkozy is married to singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, who has a really nice birthday suit...
and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edmund Randolph ...
Chinese companies were major investors in Libyan infrastructure prior to the start of the conflict in mid-February. Many of China's projects in Libya were only half-completed and no estimates have been made of the losses, given the scale of the fighting and widespread looting.

Arabia
Qaida Claims Attack on Rebels in North Yemen
[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has claimed a suicide kaboom in mid-August against a gathering of Shiite Houthis in northern Yemen, monitoring group SITE Intelligence said on Tuesday.

Witnesses at the time said two people were killed and several maimed in the August 15 car kaboom at a government administration complex at al-Matamma, in al-Jawf province, while leaders of the Shiite rebellion were meeting.

In a statement on jihadist forums posted Monday, AQAP declared that the attack "comes within the framework of its repelling the Huthis' alleged aggression against Sunnis" in al-Jawf and Saada provinces, SITE said.

The U.S. monitoring service added that AQAP claimed in its statement the blast "inflicted mass casualties in excess of 100 in the Huthi ranks" and named the jacket wallah as Abu Bakr Muhammad al-Najda.

The attack came two days after the signing of a truce by the Iranian catspaws and the Islamist ahl-Islah party, in a bid to stop the fighting that since March has flared intermittently in the area near the border with Soddy Arabia.

Yemen's mountainous far north is a stronghold of the rebels from the Zaidi Shiite community, who from 2004 fought six wars with central government forces before signing a truce in February 2010. The rebellion claimed thousands of lives.

Yemen as a whole is mainly Sunni Mohammedan but the Zaidis are the majority community in the north. Embattled President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

is himself a Zaidi.

AQAP is an affiliate of the global jihadist network accused of anti-U.S. plots, including an attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound aircraft on Christmas Day 2009.

Saleh's offer sparks mass protests in Yemen
Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have gathered in cities and towns across the country to protest what they consider President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
's latest attempt to avoid stepping down.

"No deal, no maneuvering, the president should leave," protesters in the capital Sanaa shouted on Tuesday, demonstrating against a decision made by Saleh a day earlierto authorise his vice president to negotiate with the opposition and sign a transition plan on his behalf.

The opposition insists that the president sign the power transfer plan himself.

Saleh has been in neighbouring Soddy Arabia since June for treatment of wounds he suffered in an attack on his compound in Sanaa.

The impoverished country has seen many acts of violence since nationwide pro-democracy protests broke out in February, calling for an end to Saleh's 33-year rule.

'Increasingly violent'

An "increasingly violent struggle" has killed hundreds and injured thousands in Yemen this year, mainly due to the excessive use of force by the government's security forces, the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
said on Tuesday in a report by a team of three UN human rights
...which often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
Sherlocks.

"All sides may be guilty of using and abusing peaceful protesters and the civilian population in this increasingly violent power struggle," the 23-page UN report concluded.

The UN cited allegations that the government had disrupted telecommunications, power and fuel supplies as a "form of collective punishment", while government officials blamed the opposition for having sabotaged an oil pipeline and power line.

Security forces had prevented maimed demonstrators from reaching hospital and in some cases have fired on ambulances, the report said.

Children have been subjected to killings, injury, suffocation from gas used on demonstrators, torture, arbitrary detention and recruitment by security forces, it said.

Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights, called on the Yemeni government to "take immediate action to end attacks against civilians and civilian targets by security forces".

Deaths were reported in the southern Yemeni city of Zanjibar on Tuesday, where suspected al-Qaeda gunnies killed three Yemeni soldiers and maimed five, medical and military officials said.

China-Japan-Koreas
9 N. Koreans Flee to Japan in Fishing Boat
Nine North Koreans arrived in Japan on Tuesday in a small fishing boat. A spokesman for the Japanese Coast Guard said the fishing boat carrying nine presumed defectors was found adrift in the early morning near Nanatsu Island off Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. A coast guard patrol boat towed them to Kanazawa Port, where they are being questioned, he added.

Aboard were three men, three women, and three children. They reportedly told officials they are members of a family and want to defect to South Korea.

The 8 m wooden motor boat had no GPS equipment or life jackets. It contained food when it was found, but the nine appeared to have run out of drinking water.

This was the third time North Koreans made it to Japan in a fishing boat. Eleven North Koreans arrived there in January 1987 and four in June 2007. The Japanese government handed them over to South Korea.

A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said the ministry will "take necessary measures in accordance with general principles in handling North Korean defectors" if the nine are confirmed to be defectors and "have a clear desire" to come to South Korea.

Police fire hits three students in Parachinar
[Dawn] Three of the scores of students protesting the closure of Thall-Parachinar Road were maimed in Parachinar after levies fired gunshots at them on Monday.

The students enrolled in the country`s educational institutions have been stuck in the area for many days. They had come home to spend summer vacations.
"Ma! The road's closed and I can't get back to school!"
"Don't worry dear, the same people who closed the road will burn your school."
These students had set up a camp in front of the political agent office three days ago to press the administration for early opening of the road or provision of helicopter service to help them reach their respective destinations. Personnel of levies on Monday turned up in large numbers at the camp to disperse the students. They fired gunshots in the air prompting students to march towards the main office.

The levies fired tear gas shells and bullets at protesters to block their movement. The bullets hit three students wounding them, while five fainted due to tear gas shelling.

The angry mob later attacked the nearby main post office and set a portion of it on fire. It however, dispersed later. The bullets had gun sex by levies damaged high transmission line. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
no damage to human life was reported in it.

Students told Dawn that faceless myrmidons had taken over the Thall-Parachinar Road and the administration and security forces had failed to secure the control of the road to their misery. They said students of cadet colleges were also stuck in the area but were taken away in military helicopters, while no help was offered to them.

Meanwhile in Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
, hundreds of students belonging to the Mahsud and Barki tribes held a protest demonstration and blocked the road outside the political katchery on Tank road here on Monday to demand early start of the cadet college in their area in the South Wazoo Agency.

The protesting students, led by Zahir Khan Mahsud, Gul Nawaz and others said that the Chief of Army Staff, Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
, during his visit to South Waziristan had announced establishment of a cadet college in Wana and another one in the area inhabited by the Mahsud tribe, but the projects were delayed.

They demanded of the administration to take steps to set up the college and save future of the students, who were deprived of education facilities due to the spread of militancy in the area.

They said that the protest demonstrations would continue until the project was initiated at the earliest.

Senator Saleh Shah from South Waziristan, when asked about the project, said that college would be established in the Mahsud area without further delay.

Masked men kill passenger, injure three in Kohat
[Dawn] Unidentified masked armed persons killed a primitive and injured three others in Marai area here on Monday.

Sources said that gunnies stopped a passenger coach going to Orakzai Agency
... crawling with holy men, home to Darra Adam Khel, the world's largest illegal arms bazaar. 14 distinct tribes of beturbanned primitives inhabit Orakzai agency's 1500 or so square kilometers...
and forced the commuters to get off the vehicle. They rubbed out a passenger and injured three others, they added.

The injured were shifted to a local hospital in Ustarzai village. The Ustarzai police, when contacted, said that things were not clear yet and they were investigating the incident to register a case.

Sources said that the passenger coach bearing registration number 1085-Beautiful Downtown Peshawar was carrying commuters from Hangu via Kohat to Tirah in lower Orakzai Agency when two motorcyclists intercepted it and forced the passengers to disembark from the vehicle for identification.

"There were also families in the vehicle. One of the passengers exchanged hot words with the masked men, who shot up them," they added. Arsala Khan, a resident of Orakzai Agency, was killed while Sakhiullah, his seven-year-old daughter Ayesha and Said Khan were maimed in the firing. All the victims belong to Mishti Mela tribe of Orakzai Agency.

The child was referred to KDA headquarter hospital from Ustarzai hospital.

Sources said that the attackers disappeared on their cycle of violence after committing the crime into the nearby mountainous area, infested with thick jungles. The Marai village is situated near the border of the troubled Orakzai Agency where security forces had launched operation against cut-throats in March 2010.

Officials claimed that the lower part of the tribal region was safe as it was cleared of cut-throats in September last with the help of rustics.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
local sources said that cut-throats were still present in some areas.

Militants were still attacking convoys of security forces and passenger coaches on Hangu-Parachinar Highway and in tribal area, they said.

[Dawn] Taliban gunnies attacked a school van in northwestern Pakistain on Tuesday, killing four children and the driver in an assault they said was carried out to punish local primitive for resisting the bully boy movement.

#2  Attn: MOSSAD

Erdogan is bored. Give him a nice, juicy sex scandal to fuss with. Be sure to give lots nice pictures to the tabloids in England and Germany. Have fun.

#4  Of course, since we all know how stupid and lazy the Juices are, there is no way that they will be able to counter this. Like for instance, changing their IFF so that they look like Turkish fighters.

U.S., French Envoys Join Condolence Ceremony for Slain Syrian Activist

"The ambassador of the United States arrived in Daraya along with the French ambassador to offer condolences after the death of Ghiyath Matar," the rights activists said on Twitter.

Activists also posted a brief clip on YouTube, showing the U.S. envoy Robert Ford and his French counterpart Eric Chevallier sitting on chairs at a large ceremony.

Activists said that the Japanese and Danish ambassadors also attended the ceremony.

But immediately after diplomats departed, security forces attacked the ceremony, launching tear gas and firing into the air to disperse the gathering, the activists said.

activist Ghiyath Matar while in the custody of Syrian Security Forces," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

Nuland said Matar's "courage in the face of the Assad regime's brutal repression is well known in his home of Daraya and across Syria."

His body, which was returned to his family on Saturday after his arrest on September 6, bore bruises on the chest and signs of injuries to the face, said activists cited by HRW.

Matar disappeared on the same day as one of his friends, Yahya Sharbaji.

The two were jugged in a car after a chase by security forces in the Sehnaya district of the capital, according to a relative.

Syrian security forces have tossed in the calaboose more than 70,000 people in their crackdown on anti-regime protests that erupted in mid-March, and 15,000 remain in detention, according to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

says a total of 2,600 people -- mostly civilians -- have been killed in a crackdown on almost daily protests by pro-democracy and anti-regime demonstrators in Syria since mid-March.

Al Qaeda chief says 9/11 paved way for Arab Spring
[Dawn] In a message Tuesday marking the Sept. 11 anniversary, al Qaeda's new leader sought to claim credit for this year's Arab uprisings, saying the 2001 attacks on the United States paved the way for the "Arab volcano" sweeping the region a decade later.

Ayman al-Zawahri and other al Qaeda figures have issued a number of messages seeking to associate themselves with the Arab uprisings that toppled autocratic leaders in his native Egypt, as well as Tunisia and Libya, and which threaten others. In the messages, they urge Arabs to replace toppled regimes with Islamic rule.

The wave of unrest transforming the Middle East, however, was largely the work of young, peaceful protesters seeking democratic freedoms, and political observers say it showed the failure of al Qaeda's bad boy ideology and how out of touch the terror group is with Arab youth.

"By striking the head of the world criminal," al Qaeda forced America to press its allies in the Middle East to change their policies, which helped the "Arab volcano" to build up and explode, al-Zawahri said in the hour-long audio message.

Al-Zawahri was the late Osama bin Laden
... who is currently taking a long nap in the dirt... urm... water...
's deputy and became head of al Qaeda in June after bin Laden's death in the May 2 raid by US Navy SEALs in Pakistain. Al-Zawahri had a long history of fighting against Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
's rule in his home nation, leading snuffies who carried out deadly bombing and shooting attacks in the 1990s.

Islamic snuffies considered the regimes of Mubarak and other US-allied autocrats in the Middle East to be corrupt, godless and too closely aligned with the West.

Their attacks were met with a crackdown by Mubarak's security forces thon the lamly crushed their operations in Egypt.

In his new message, titled "The Dawn of Imminent Victory," al-Zawahri also lashed out at the United States for what he called "blatant deception" in showing support for the Arab uprisings while keeping strong ties with leaders in the absolute monarchies of the Gulf, like Soddy Arabia.

"Why doesn't it (the US) say anything to Al Saud, the killers of Mohammedans and the thieves of their wealth," he said, referring to the Saudi ruling family.

The new message released by al Qaeda's media arm and posted on bad boy websites included previously unreleased footage of bin Laden.

The US was on high alert during the weekend over what officials described as a credible but unconfirmed terror threat on Washington or New York.

#1  I always thought they were connected, but not in that way, of course. In fact, I blame Bush.

Arabs observed two of their neighbors voting for their leaders, after Presidents For Life were forcibly removed.

The rise in food prices, fueled (so to speak) by the oil policies of those dictators, (among other things) was frosting on the cake.

#2  Ayman al-Zawahri and other al Qaeda figures have issued a number of messages seeking to associate themselves with the Arab uprisings

I think they attribute more relevance to themselves than they deserve. Or maybe they are just seeking to find relevance where they can--what's left of them. The Arab unrisings might just be Bush's fault. He helped create a model for a free/democratic Iraq. I doubt that went unnoticed by the Arab bretheren and sisters in adjacent countries.

#3  A dead man once said something about a strong horse. Seems Al Queda is trying to associate themselves with a strong horse rather than the other way around. Kind of pathetic.

Hamas: Headquarters to remain in Syria
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Hamas confirmed on Monday that it would not be moving its headquarters from Syria following unrest in the country, a party statement said.
...and the boy prostitutes of Damascus giggle with delight!
"We confirm that the news reports on some media outlets claiming that the movement considers moving its offices or part of its leadership from Damascus, upon request from Syrian security, are false and not real at all," the statement said.
So they never said, "Get the hell outa here, youse guys. Yer nothin' but trouble!" -- that was just a figment of Mahmoud's fevered imagination? What a relief.
Hamas leader Mahmoud Warty Nose Zahhar had previously said that several options were being explored in light of the security situation in Syria which is "dangerous for all Palestinians, not just Hamas."
Jeez, ya think we were in...Gaza, or sumthin.
Reports indicated that Cairo was being touted as a potential location if the Islamist party decided to move its headquarters."There are a number of options and Egypt is one of them," Zahhar had said. Egypt's ambassador to the Palestinian Authority responded to the comments by saying that they did not reflect any official policy.
"We don't want 'em. They're nothin' but trouble."
Palestinians have been repeatedly targeted and dozens have been killed amid the Assad regime's crackdown on pro-democracy protests that began in mid-March.
But ya gotta break some eggs to make omelets...
