Qari Ziauddin ID'd as a Zap-ee
Sounds like this guy deserves a place in the tally book.
Coalition special operations forces killed the Taliban's shadow governor for the northwestern province of Faryab yesterday.

Qari Ziauddin, the shadow governor for Faryab province, was killed in a "precision airstrike" on Oct. 5 after Coalition forces tracked him "to a remote area of Dowlatabad district," the International Security Assistance Force stated in a press release.

A joint Coalition and Afghan assault force followed up the strike, and killed four Taliban fighters in a firefight. The team was able to confirm that Ziauddin had been killed in the airstrike.

The joint forces also discovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and IED materials
and sat phones and computers and pay books and????
while searching a series of nearby caves.
If I were young, and had the right temperament, I'd go into computers just to be able to be able to search jihadi equipment for interesting connections.

Iran busted "transferring" 19 tons of explosives into Afghanistan
We were tipped off by an Iranian source. The stuff was simply put in a container and shipped over a bridge. La-dee-da. No big cover up, no night missions, no nothing. Now that's what I call crack security!

No wonder why Iran thinks we're idiots.

#1  No wonder why Iran thinks we're idiots.

Clearly they do, gorb. But we've got a spy in their ranks, and we caught the man taking delivery as well as acquiring 19 tons of very useful material. (Surely we can do something with the stuff, if only making some suddenly loud and spectacular fireworks!) And now they should be looking at their own people funny, wondering which one(s) are talking to us, just like the purges at the nuclear sites because of the Stuxnet worm... and the panic a few years ago about robot squirrels spying for the Americans.

#5  AFP via Fox News adds

Afghan police said Wednesday they had seized 22 tons of explosives stashed in boxes marked "food, toys and kitchenware" that were imported from neighboring Iran.

The discovery was made Tuesday in a customs office in the western province of Nimroz on the Iranian border, deputy provincial police chief Mohammad Musa Rasouli said.

"We found these materials hidden in a 40 foot shipping container that had come from Iran. The explosives were disguised as merchandise like food, toys and kitchenware," he added.

When they die may they go straight to Hell, there to have their intestines roasted by devils beyond the end of the universe.

#6  we caught the man taking delivery as well as acquiring 19 tons of very useful material

Yes, but I'm pretty sure that for every load we intercept, 100 fly by right under our noses. And how hard can it be? It's over a bridge! Shouldn't we at least be watching the obvious choke points and make their lives a bit miserable? They just piled this stuff into a container, gave a slap after they closed it, and trucked it straight across a bridge to the waiting hands of our enemies!

I'm sure there's more to it, such as a porous border and all, but I'm going to bang my head on the corner of a filing cabinet until I understand how this can happen so easily. There should be zero traffic across the border with Iran as far as I can tell.

Kenya deports actual German terror suspect
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A German suspected to be involved in terrorism was jugged in Kenya and deported to Germany, ending three weeks of a countrywide police manhunt.

Reports of the arrest came in moments after police headquarters circulated photographs of the suspect, 23-year-old Sascha Alessadro Bottcher.

Travel documents showed he entered Kenya on September 22.

His whereabouts had remained unknown and police are alarmed because he wrote a will before leaving Germany, indicating he was headed for Somalia and he would not return alive.

Consequently, officers across the country were put on high alert through a signal sent from police headquarters to all stations across Kenya ordering that Mr Bottcher be "jugged on sight and immediately inform this office for action".

He left Frankfurt in Germany and landed at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa on September 22 aboard Condor Air.

He travelled on a passport number C6W9JVGLG6D, which is due to expire in July 2014.

Part of the police report reads: "He is on transit to Somalia. He left a declaration will to his mother that he will never return alive."

Kenyan police suspect the man was referring to a suicide kaboom and are worried because he did not specify his targets.

Before the arrest police front man Eric Kiraithe had made an appeal: "We urge any person with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect is urged to volunteer the same to the nearest police officer or station."

The report comes at a time the United States' has warned its citizens travelling to Kenya of a possible terror attack.

The warning by the State department was given on July 22, after the July 11, 2010 terrorist bombings in Kampala, Uganda, and remains in place until October 22.

"There have been increased threats made against public areas in Kenya," reads part of the warning posted at the US embassy official website.

Last week, police in Kwale were on high alert following claims of a planned terrorism attack at Mkokoni.

There are two villages named Mkokoni, in Lamu and Kwale Kwale.

Th Al-Shabaab terror network, linked to Al-Qaeda is fighting government forces in Somalia and grabbed credit for the Kampala attacks.

Recent intelligence reports also showed it has an active cell in East Africa, with most of its officials being Kenyans.

The report also shows the bombs used in Kampala were assembled, and transported through Kenya.

Before suspects being tried in Uganda were jugged, according to the report, they were planning similar attacks in Kenya.

Terror suspect''s extradition to US "would breach human rights" - lawyer
(KUNA) -- Extradition to the US for a suspected Al Qaeda terrorist would breach his human rights and amount to an "abuse of process", his lawyer told a court Tuesday.

Abid Naseer, 24, is wanted for trial in America after being accused of being "deeply involved" in a plot to bomb the New York underground system and targets in Britain.

Ben Cooper, lawyer for Naseer, cited conditions in US "super max" prisons as one of the reasons for blocking the extradition.

"In due course, it will be submitted before this court that to permit Naseer to be tried in the US amounts to an abuse of process," he said.

Naseer, who appeared via video link from Belmarsh prison, London, was remanded in custody until November 2.

City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London has set aside December 15, 16 and 17 as provisional dates for a full extradition hearing.

Naseer was jugged in July in the north east of England by Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism officers after US authorities issued a warrant.

The US revealed it was bringing charges against Naseer and four other suspects over an alleged terrorist conspiracy. Naseer, a Pak national formerly of Manchester, northern England, is alleged to have planned attacks on Manchester city centre and communicated with Al Qaeda leaders behind the plot.

The UK Government attempted to deport Naseer and a second man, Ahmed Faraz Khan, 26, to Pakistain, but a judge blocked the move on the grounds they could be tortured.

Falcon Lake Murder Mystery Gets Murkier
Gov Perry was on Fox and Friends this morning about this — he's gotten the Foreign Minister ? involved — so it's really being looked at. There have been other "incidents" since April —

Years ago, hubby and I were exploring on and around this lake — by boat and car. On a car trip, didn't know it, but we had crossed into Mexico — got met by some big men with big guns.......

It is a murky tale. But as Perry said, "There are problems on that Lake."

#1  If I were Governor (Zoolander) Rick Perry ....... I would shut down the border crossings into Texas till either .......... Mexico returned the corpse of David Hartley or Mexico paid tribute to his family.

Isn't this about one of the three legitimate jobs of the federal government ....??? I guess this is just another example where the people will have to do the job of the federal governemnt ......... much like the folks in the State of Arizona are doing.

Am I wrong .........???

Good lord, no, Nimble Spemble. People don't seem to take me to the more adventurous neighborhoods for some reason. It was a block over from Fountain Square (5th & Vine), as I recall, in the nice part of downtown. We were walking back to the car after a very satisfying dinner.

#16  OK, NS. Same question - is there something there that tells people on the water that they've crossed into Mexico?

Or have people been boating and skiing around on the Mexican side of the lake for years with no complaints from Mexico as long as they stay in the water?

And what's the Mexican gummint doing about this? Or is it OK if Mexicans kill Americans who temporarily stray over the border on a lake, but not equally OK for Americans to kill Mexicans who actually sneak across the border to permanently steal the benefits of our citizenship?

Never mind, I know the answer to that last one. :-(
Posted by: Barbara Skolaut || 10/06/2010 19:02 Comments || Top||

#17  Falcon Lake is indeed the Rio Grande -- dammed up. Some parts of the lake is from 3-5 miles wide -- last time I was on it -- there were no markers, we weren't warned not to stray -- as is the warnings now since April. Campers and fishermen are coming armed.

Yes -- call for a poly --- but, if I were a wife who had some nefarious doings with my husband's death, I would want that body permanently disappeared.

Instead -- here is a wife, on Fox -- pleading for the Gov and the Pres to get involved.

Been lots of communications today -- both way -- Perry is wanting to speak with the Pres of Mexico.

Again -- yea -- lots of questions --- but I wouldn't want my 15 minutes of fame to be going on national TV pleading for the body of my husband -- if, I had something to cover-up.

'Course -- there are some crazies in this world

#18  Sherry, see the story of Susan Smith, who murdered her two young sons and then went on national TV to appeal to the black man who she claimed had carjacked her car.
It turned out that she had run the car into a lake with the two boys inside, because she wanted to hook up with a guy who didn't want a ready made family.

#20  Rambler -- I know of the story of Susan Smith.

I'm just curious as to why she is making such a case to find her husband's body -- unless, she does know, there isn't one to be found.

She has offered an "invitation" to the Texas Rangers to get involved -- and, well, not a smart move -- Just ask Chuck Norris!

A tale to be told.

  • Two men were found shot to death in Mexicali, Baja California, say Mexican news accounts. Julio Cesar Rosa Medina and Miguel Olguin Hernandez were found on Avenida Hermenegildo Galeana and Calle Río Loreto in the Miraflores district where the two were aboard a Kia van with California plates near the Vistahermosa Kindergarten were shot by armed suspects riding in a Volkswagen Jetta. Several spent shell casings were found at the scene.

  • Three more individuals were found in a grave previously discovered in late August in Tijuana, Baja California, say Mexican news reports. The grave was discovered in the Tres October district where two male victims were found. Authorities returned to the residence with a backhoe where the grave was first discovered and found three more victims, two men and a woman. The new discovery was made because of the arrest of Higinio Melero López, 34, who told authorities a problem with a drug sale was the motive for the murders.

Copenhagen bombing suspect sentenced to remain in custody
(Xinhua) -- Lors Doukaev, a Chechnya suspect for manufacturing bombs in Copenhagen, should remain in prison and isolation under a court rule, local media reported Tuesday.

Doukaev was jugged on Sept. 10 following an initial minor kaboom at Hotel Joergensen in central Copenhagen.

He stood accused for illegally possessing a firearm as well as manufacturing explosives with the intention of putting them to use in central Copenhagen.

Despite huge public interest on the case, the hearing was held behind close doors on Monday morning, during which the judge announced that Doukaev should remain in custody and isolated for another four weeks.

Doukaev's defender, Niels Anker Rasmussen, said after the hearing that he had not protested against the continued imprisonment, but he had tried to prevent his client staying in isolation.

"It's always an extra burden to stay in isolation, but the judge said that it is necessary for the continued investigation," said Rasmussen.

According to the Danish police, Doukaev has lived in Liege, Belgium, for the past five years and is originally from the Russian region of Chechnya.

Police also said that he had most likely planned to send a letter bomb to Jyllands-Posten, a Danish newspaper which published cartoons of Prophet Mohammad in 2005 and ignited protests in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Svend Foldager, head of the investigation, claimed that the letter the suspect had intended to use would contain the kaboom TATP, also known as "Mother of Satan" because of its very unstable nature and sensitivity to heat and friction.

TATP has been used in various terrorist attacks around the world, including the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Dec. 25, 2009.

The blast prompted the Danish intelligence agency PET to raise the terror threat level for Denmark, which has been named by several terrorist groups as a target following the 2005 publication of a caricature series of Prophet Mohammed.

Fed's case against terrorist goes badly right out of the gate
The defendant, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, was scheduled to begin trial on Wednesday in Federal District Court on charges he conspired in the 1998 bombings of the American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attacks, orchestrated by Al Qaeda, killed 224 people....

Mr. Ghailani's lawyers say that he was tortured while in C.I.A. custody, and argued that any statements he made or evidence derived from those statements was tainted and should be inadmissible.

Prosecutors say the witness, Hussein Abebe, sold Mr. Ghailani the TNT that was used to blow up the Embassy in Dar es Salaam. They say Mr. Abebe agreed voluntarily to testify against Mr. Ghailani, and that his decision to cooperate was only remotely linked with the interrogation.

But in a three-page ruling, Judge Kaplan wrote that "the government has failed to prove that Abebe's testimony is sufficiently attenuated from Ghailani's coerced statements to permit its receipt in evidence.
This is why you don't treat terrorism as a law enforcement problem. Seriously, could everyone but the Feds not have seen this coming?

Scottsdale man who posed as Marine gets 7.5 years in prison
A Scottsdale man who posed as a highly decorated Marine for several years was sentenced Tuesday to 7 1/2 years in prison, according to the Arizona Attorney General's Office.

John W. Rodriguez, 31 was sentenced in Maricopa Country Superior Court on charges of forgery, fraudulent schemes and presentation of a false instrument for filing. Along with prison time, the sentence includes four years of probation upon his release.

... A search of Department of the Navy and Department of Defense records found that Rodriguez never served in any branch of the military. Rodriguez, 31, had spent years passing himself off as a war hero who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Arizona Attorney General's Office.

He gained access to military bases, received discounted airline tickets, went to the Marine Corps Ball and briefly acquired a job with a local health-care provider that gave him access to sensitive information on veterans...

"This guy is such a good con man that he has trained with the local Marine Corps unit here. . . . He got in Camp Pendleton in San Diego with his ID," DPS Detective Roger Wilson said.

Dronezap du Jour
Four dead in US drone strike in North Wazoo.
A US drone strike killed four people in country's tribal northwest region Wednesday, a security official said, as the Western superpower steps up its assault on the militant-hit area. "A US drone fired two missiles on a militant compound in Miranshah," one security official told a foreign news agency. "We have reports that four militants were killed."
Zap enough and eventually we'll get lucky and hit a Mr. Big.
Another security official confirmed the toll and said that two others were wounded. Residents in Miranshah, the main town in tribal north Waziristan province, said militants had cordoned off the attack site and would not let anyone approach.
That cordon should establish a Free Fire Zone.
The attack triggered a fire in the compound and smoke could be seen rising from the building half a kilometre away, a resident said.
Secondary explosions?

NATO trucks still stranded in Pakistan
[Iran Press TV] The main supply route used by US-led forces in Pakistain to transport goods to neighboring Afghanistan remains closed for the sixth consecutive day.

Hundreds of NATO vehicles, including tankers and containers are parked in different parts of northwestern Pakistain near the Afghan border.

Dozens of NATO fuel tankers have been ambushed by Orcs and similar vermin over the past week. Pak forces are now providing security for the stranded containers packed with NATO supplies.

Pak officials have said the key border post will stay closed in the coming days in retaliation to a recent NATO attack that killed three Pak soldiers.

Pakistain blocked the major supply route to protest non-UN-sanctioned attacks by US-led forces into the country last week.

The ban, however, has not stopped US forces from carrying out more non-UN-sanctioned attacks in the Pak territory.

In the most recent of such attacks, US dronezaps killed at least eight people in Pakistain on Monday.

US-led forces have carried out a record number of unauthorized Arclight airstrikes in Pakistain in 2010.

The dronezaps, which were initiated by former US President George W. Bush and continued under President Barack B.O. Obama, have drastically increased in recent weeks at a time when floods have caused devastation in the South Asian country.

Islamabad has condemned the unauthorized US Arclight airstrikes, saying such attacks violate Pakistain's illusory sovereignty.

#1  These are not "NATO" vehicles. They are Pakistani vehicles hauling cargo under contract. Every one of these vehicles stranded or destroyed on that route is a vehicle removed from Pakistan's economy. Pakistan doesn't have all that many tanker trucks to begin with. They can't afford to keep losing them by the dozen. At some point the damage to Pakistan's transportation industry will force them to do something about it.

Gangster Busted with a Kilo of Uranium
Terrorism? Or just criminal business? Not sure, but certainly of interest.
A criminal with alleged links to gangs across the country and even Afghanistan was nabbed in Purulia with nearly 1 kg of uranium on Sunday. The market value of the radioactive element is said to be about $7 million.

When police raided Ishtaq Ahmed's house at Dubra village in the Maoist-dominated Para area after a tip-off, they found a box with 'URM, Made in USA' stamped on it.
Sounds a little odd - real or a scam?
Uranium's chemical symbol is U, not URM. The only thing I found with the acornym URM that would fit in a box is a Universal Router Module made by Cisco.
An automatic revolver, a pipegun and 21 rounds of ammunition were also discovered during the search. Ahmed was arrested and a case filed at Para police station mentioning uranium seizure.

Police haven't opened the sealed box as the substance inside could be dangerously radioactive. It is being sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for tests.
Gang with A'stan connections and location with Maoist connections -trouble either way.

Israeli forces arrest eight Palestinians in W.Bank
(KUNA) -- Israeli occupation forces jugged eight Paleostinians in different parts of the West Bank on Tuesday.

Israeli troops raided Bil'in village west of Ramallah and jugged four Paleostinians, said a Paleostinian popular committee official.

Israeli forces have targeted muscle, popular resistance and launched ongoing campaigns to abort the popular uprising, the official said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Israeli occupation forces jugged a Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, turban at a surprise checkpoint set in the village of Hawara, near Nablus.

Israeli troops also detained a Paleostinian in Jenin area after storming into the Paleostinian refugee camp in Jenin.

Israeli forces also jugged two Paleostinians, one maimed after being shot by military forces based in Qalqilya north of the West Bank.

Southeast Asia
Deaths in Thailand explosion
[Al Jazeera] At least three people have been killed and several others injured after an kaboom hit a residential building north of the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The blast occurred at about 6pm local time (11:00 GMT) in the Bang Bua Thong district of Nonthaburi province on Tuesday, a local police official said.

"We still don't know the cause of the kaboom. Two storeys of the mansion collapsed," Colonel Somchai Hussakul, a police front man, said.

He said the blast probably occurred in a room in the building.

The kaboom came just hours after Thailand's government extended a controversial state of emergency in Nonthaburi and three other provinces, including Bangkok.

The emergency was imposed in the wake of deadly street protests and a series of grenade blasts in the capital.

A string of small bombings, thought to be politically motivated, have hit Bangkok and the surrounding areas this year.

Authorities recently gave warning that increased violence was expected beginning this month, and over the weekend 11 men were detained in the northern province of Chiang Mai.

They are suspected of training for armed attacks on behalf of a movement to overthrow Thailand's monarchy.

Abu Sayyaf militant captured in S. Philippines
(Xinhua) -- Philippine security forces captured a suspected Mohammedan bad boy working with the Abu Sayyaf group in the country's restive south on Tuesday, police said.

The bad turban, Bidung Ismael, was jugged by combined forces of police and military near the city hall in Limo-ok village, Lamitan city in the island province of Basilan, where al-Qaeda linked Islamic fascisti are active, police said.

Ismael was among the Abu Sayyaf gunnies who attacked and briefly occupied a hospital in Lamitan in 2001 after seizing several Filipinos and foreigners in a resort-island in western Philippines, leaving scores of government troops, Islamic fascisti and civilians dead, said regional police commander Chief Superintendent Bienvenido Latag, adding that Ismael has a standing arrest warrant for kidnapping with serious illegal detention.

"He (Ismael) is a member of Abu Sayyaf," Latag said.

The Abu Sayyaf, active in southern Philippines, was founded in the 1990s and has perpetrated a number of high-profile attacks, including kidnapping and bombing. The Philippine military estimates the Abu Sayyaf, which has links with external terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, has about 400 members.

Thai court drops case against Bout
[Al Jazeera] A Thai court has dismissed money-laundering and fraud charges against Viktor Bout, the alleged Russian arms smuggler, removing the last legal obstacle for his extradition to the US where he is wanted on "terrorism" charges.

Bout, nick named "Merchant of Death", was to be extradited in August to face trial for conspiring to sell weapons to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the country's largest rebel group, after being jugged in a US-led sting operation in March 2008.

But the extradition was postponed while the extra charges brought by the US prosecutors were heard.

The Bangkok Criminal Court ruled on Tuesday to drop the money-laundering and fraud charges due to lack of evidence and other technicalities.

The extra charges were lodged by the US against Bout in February to ensure he was not set free.

The former Soviet air officer is wanted in the US on suspicion of trafficking arms to dictators and conflict zones around the world since the 1990s.

Theodore Karasik, a security analyst with the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Affairs in Dubai, told Al Jazeera that Bout knows "plenty about Russian military arms transfers throughout the world from the 1990s up until the time of his arrest".

"Some state secrets may be leaked to the Americans and it may hurt US-Russian relations in the future. To have the future of US-Russian relations being settled in this instance in Thailand is highly unusual and does put the Thais in a bit of a tight spot," he said.

'Political persecution'
Bout has repeatedly denied arms trafficking charges, saying that he ran a legitimate air cargo business and was in Bangkok to discuss selling planes when he was jugged.

The 43-year-old has argued that his life would be in danger if he was sent to the US because of a possible death sentence.

On Monday he said claims that he was one of the world's most prolific arms dealers were a "fantasy".

"I did nothing wrong. I am a victim of political persecution," he said after the court ruling.

Bout, who was inspiration for Nicholas Cage's character in the 2005 movie Lord of War, has been held in a Thai maximum-security prison since his arrest in March 2008.

Lobbying by Moscow for his release has fuelled speculation he was receiving protection from Russian authorities who had made no apparent attempt over the years to interfere in his alleged operations.

The spies Iran arrested? Russian nuclear technicians
DEBKAfile reports that dozens of Russian nuclear technicians, engineers and contractors have packed up their families and headed for home after a few of their number were arrested as suspects in the Stuxnet worm infestation at Bushehr, Natanz, Isfahan and Tehran.
Who now is going to run the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant and the secret uranium processing facilities, that's what I want to know... not to mention what will happen to all those facilities without their Russian staff.
DEBKAfile reports that hundreds of Russians were involved in installing the Siemens control systems, and these may constitute a second wave fleeing Iranian wrath.

#4  I have a broad tolerance for shaky source. I regularly read DEBKA and I find their contributions valuable, but you've always got to keep in mind that it's an outlet for certain sections of Israeli intelligence. For the most part, their stuff is true and first-rate.

This is one those times that I don't believe the report, unless we get independent verification. It is very much in the Israeli interest to drive a wedge between the Iranian gov't and the Russian technicians.

If you had a neighbor who wanted nuclear this has no trail. Mules perhaps. PK Daily has been right out front on allot of news as with the DEBKA. I looked at those untouched from the start.
