Afghanistan
Shadowy Qari Mahmad Umar Killed in A'stan
Coalition and Afghan forces have killed a senior commander of the al Qaeda-linked Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan who doubled as Taliban shadow district governor in the northern province of Takhar.

The combined force killed Qari Mahmad Umar and an associate in "a precision air strike" yesterday after tracking him to a remote region of the Bahawuddin district, according to the International Security Assistance Force.

Umar served as the shadow governor of Bahawuddin district. "Umar was an improvised explosive device expert and trainer involved in facilitating supplies as well as constructing and emplacing IED's in northern Takhar and Kunduz provinces," ISAF stated.

Umar is the second shadow district governor killed in Takhar this month. On Oct. 4, Maulawi Jawadullah, the district shadow governor for Yangi Qalah in Takhar, was killed in an airstrike.

Some 25 likely killed in Afghanistan airstrike: official
[Dawn] About 25 people may have been killed in a Nato Arclight airstrike in southern Afghanistan on Monday, an Afghan official said.
Lots of bad guys discover the road to Hell is paved by kissing American missiles. Dr. Fadl wrote that jihad in Afghanistan, Iraq and "Palestine" are permitted, but fighting against an overwhelming enemy such as America is not because of the disproportionate destruction that falls on Muslims as a result. Losing 25+ at once certainly meets that description.
Nato officials confirmed there had been an Arclight airstrike in Helmand province but said initial reports indicated that there were no civilian casualties.

The coalition was continuing to look into the operation, the officials said.

The head of Helmand's provincial council, Fazal Bari, said local officials had told him that 25 people had been killed but that the casualty figures could rise because many bodies were still buried in the rubble.

He said the dead were inside a mosque in Baghran district but Nato said it had no reports of a mosque being struck.

Baghran is the northernmost district in Helmand, about 100 miles north of the quiet provincial capital of Lashkar Gah.

In an unrelated incident, an jihad boy attack in eastern Afghanistan killed a Nato service member, the coalition said in a statement on Monday, bringing to 50 the number of coalition soldiers killed this month. The statement did not provide further details on Sunday's death.

The Afghan insurgency has traditionally been fiercest in the country's south and east, along the border with Pakistain. Most of the insurgency's top commanders are believed to be hiding in the mountainous Pakistain border area. Nato and Afghan troops have been trying to wrest back control of the southern provinces from the Taliban since July, but attacks and roadside kabooms are still daily occurrences.

Nato has also been trying to kill or capture Taliban leaders in Arclight airstrikes and in joint ground operations with the Afghan army.

Residents said the push has resulted in patches of security in the south, but the insurgency has stepped up attacks in other parts of the country, including the north, which has traditionally been more stable.

In northern Afghanistan Monday, a suicide kaboomer blew up his explosives-laden car in Pul-i-Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province, said Mahmood Akmal, a front man for the provincial governor.

The attacker died, but no one else was injured in the blast, which appeared to be targeting a coalition convoy, he said.

On Saturday, four suicide kaboomers used a car bomb, explosives vests and guns to attack a UN compound in the western province of Herat. The four attackers were the only fatalities.

See! Just innocent civilians going to religious services & they got blown up by the evil Americans. Or maybe it wasn't an airstrike at all but an accident in a munitions plant. Hard to tell.

Gunmen kidnap Dutch aid worker and Afghan driver
[Dawn] Gunmen seized a Dutch aid worker and his Afghan driver in northern Afghanistan on Monday, a local government official said.

Four gunnies took the two men out of their car in Takhar province and drove them west toward neighboring Kunduz province, said Takhar Governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa, quoting witnesses. The two were working with an aid group helping disabled people.

Police and intelligence officials are trying to track the group and the Kunduz authorities have been informed, Taqwa said.

Dutch Foreign Ministry front man Bart Rijs confirmed a Dutch man and his Afghan driver had been kidnapped, but gave few details and did not release the names of the men or the aid group.

"Our embassy in Kabul is in constant contact with the Afghan authorities and the Netherlands will support the Afghan authorities wherever necessary and possible to bring this case to a positive conclusion," Rijs said.

Afghanistan is becoming increasingly dangerous for aid workers. In August, 10 members of a Christian medical team _ six Americans, two Afghans, one German and a Briton _ were ambushed and later killed by gunnies in neighboring Badakhshan province. The team was attacked as they were returning to Kabul after their two-week mission in the remote Parun valley of Nuristan province, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) north of Kabul.

Last month, Linda Norgrove, a British aid worker, was kidnapped in Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Binny's house in Chitral...
in eastern Afghanistan. She died of head and chest injuries caused by a grenade thrown by a US serviceman during a failed Oct. 8 rescue attempt.

The kidnappings, along with Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai's intention to ban foreign security guards, has led to talk of a large-scale operations shutdown by private reconstruction companies.

12 Africans Start Yemen Trial on Piracy Charges
[Yemen Post] The Specialized Penal Court in Hadramout Province started on Sunday the trial of 12 Somalis on piracy charges.
"Yarrrr! They be pirates!"
At the first hearing chaired by Judge Abdu Ali Awadhi, the prosecution accused the Africans of hijacking two Yemeni boats and using them to attack Yemeni and foreign vessels passing in Yemen's territorial waters and international waterways.

The charges included that the Somalis prepared all necessary things to commit their crimes including the possession of weapons, explosives and ladders.

Their acts harmed Yemen's economic and trade position and exposed maritime navigation and vessels to dangers, the prosecution said.

The court reviewed evidence against the pirates including their confessions to illegal activities that they had given during interrogations.
Owowowowow! I confess! I'm a pirate! I killed Jon Benet! I was the gunman on the Grassy Knoll!"
The twelve pirates were jugged on May 28, 2010 off Nashtoun Port, Mahra.
Arrrr! Keelhaul the lot of 'em!

Anti-piracy chopper fire kills four in Somalia: witnesses
[Dawn] Somali pirates shot up an anti-piracy helicopter, sparking retaliation that killed at least four people in a small coastal village, witnesses told AFP Monday.

The pirates in Labad village along Somalia's northern coast on Sunday night shot at the unidentified chopper from an anti-piracy warship patrolling the waters around the lawless Horn of Africa country.

"Some of our friends preparing for an attack near Labad were provoked by a military chopper belonging to the international forces violating our waters and they opened fire on it, but it fired back one missile that killed four people including fishermen," Abdi Yare, a pirate leader, told AFP by phone.

"The missile hit a rock and went kaboom! causing the casualties. Three others were also injured in the incident," he added.

Local elders also confirmed the incident.

"The chopper flew from a military ship off the coastal area and it fired a missile after the pirates opened fire on it," said Mohamed Abdi, an elder.

Abdulaziz Moalim Ahmed, another elder, said: "The pirates were preparing to go for an attack when the chopper spotted them."

A flotilla of foreign navies has been patrolling off the Somali coast since 2008 to safeguard the crucial Gulf of Aden shipping lane that had nearly been overrun by rampaging pirates from the war-wracked country.

The warships have managed to thwart several hijackings and jugged dozens of pirates, but the attacks have not abated.

At least 27 foreign vessels and 485 seamen remain in the hands of the pirates, according to Ecoterra, an NGO monitoring maritime activies in the region.

Arabia
Yemen Arrests Notorious Interpol-Hunted Drug Dealer
[Yemen Post] Police in Amran Province have jugged a drug pusher wanted by Yemen and Soddy Arabia, who was being hunted by the Interpol, the News Yemen reported on Saturday.

The website quoted the province security director, Abdullah Dabwan, as saying that the pusher had been jugged in Amran and would remain in jug as a prelude to handing him to the specialized authorities.
"Mahmoud! The number seven truncheon, if you please!"
"Yes, effendi!"
"And wax my mustache!"

The pusher's name was circulated by the criminal police four years ago on charges of smuggling coal to Newcastle drugs to Yemen and Soddy Arabia, it said.

He was a notorious pusher and his arrest represented a blow to the trade and trafficking of drugs that have flourished in Yemen since the Lower Miocene.

Deputy Director of Investigations Killed in Hajah
[Yemen Post] Deputy Director of investigations, Ali Abdullah Wahan, was rubbed out by the mob in the district of Kushr in Hajah province in the early hours the day Monday, a senior Police officer now retired told the Yemen Post.

He said that about three or four people fired at the police killing Wahan, no one else injured and the suspects decamped on foot.

Police said Wahan, 42, came under attack near the police compound on his way to his office in the district of Kushr of Hajah governorate.

The gang of Al-Derini,
... an offshoot of the Barzini clan...
numbering about 20 people, attacked the cop shoppe in the district trying to release their kinfolk from the district prison, the same source said.

Within minutes, security forces, including the Hajah Police began to arrive on the area, looking for the suspects, he said.
The subjects who had escaped on foot. Did the coppers follow them on foot? Or did they simply discuss the matter whilst exchanging perplexed looks?

Yemeni police 'foil bomb attack'
[Al Jazeera] Yemeni security forces have prevented a planned attack on "vital installations" ahead of the 20th Gulf Football Cup in the southern city of Aden, the interior ministry said.

A man was jugged as he placed a plastic bag containing 1,800g of dynamite at a location in the city, a statement from the ministry late on Saturday said.

Following Saturday's incident, officers detained seven closed personal friends of the perp and were hunting for another two members of a group suspected of "sabotage".

Separately, the trial of five Yemenis accused of attacking a sports club in the city earlier this month began on Sunday. The five were accused of placing explosives at Al-Wahda club in the Sheikh Othman area of Aden, wounding 17 people, three of whom later gave up the ghost.

They denied the charges
"Wudn't us."
"No, no! Certainly not!"

and requested access to lawyers. The court set the next hearing for Wednesday to allow for legal representation.

Security threats
The October 11 attack, for which responsibility was not claimed, threw doubts on Yemen's ability to stage the regional Gulf Cup tournament from November 22 to December 5 in Aden and Abyan.

Al Jizz's Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Sanaa, said that a separatist movement is gaining momentum in the southern provinces and al-Qaeda seems to be extending its reach there as well. "Against all these odds, the government decided to host the biggest football tournament in the Gulf in the city of Aden. This is of course a politically motivated decision because the government is desperate to show the world a very positive story in Yemen," Ahelbarra said. "The separatist and al-Qaeda would like to see these events disrupted because that would definitely be a blow to Yemen."

The two provinces hosting the competition involving Yemen, Iraq and six Gulf states have seen an increasing number of al-Qaeda attacks, although Aden has generally been spared from violence that has plagued other areas of the south.

General Qiran Abdullah, Aden's security chief, said that "all necessary measures... to ensure security in the provinces of Aden, Abyan, and Lahij during the Gulf Cup," had been taken.

However,
The infamous However...
Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, Yemen's foreign minister, warned that there were about 400 al-Qaeda gunnies in the country and that they "seek to cause chaos and destruction".

He told al-Hayat newspaper on Sunday that Saudi nationals were among the active fighters. Al-Qaeda's Yemeni and Saudi offshoots joined forces last year to form al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Police raid Jamaat office for Taher
Police raided the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami at Moghbazar in the capital yesterday to arrest former Jamaat politician Abdullah Mohammad Taher.

none was jugged and nothing seized during the raid from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

Syed Nurul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Ramna zone, told The Daily Star that police and officials of Detective Branch (DB) raided the Jamaat office upon receiving information that a meeting was being held there to make plans for some subversive activities.

Monirul Islam, deputy commissioner of DB (South), said the main objective of the raid was to arrest Taher, former politician of the religion-based political party.

Taher, former president of Jamaat's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and an executive member of the party, on August 4 said Jamaat has its own reserve force which will be used against the government at the appropriate time.

A number of cases have been lodged in connection with his statement in Dhaka, Bogra and Gopalganj.

Meanwhile,

A video released Monday accuses former Chihuahua state attorney general Patricia Gonzalez of involvement in with La Linea criminal gang in Juarez.

Last Thursday, Mario Gonzalez, a private attorney was abducted from his office by an armed group. He was seen in the latest video confessing a nexus between the criminal group La Linea and his sister, Patricia Gonzalez.

The confession accuses Gonzalez of providing protection for La Linea and knowledge of several murders in 2009 and was paid a large monthly fee.

La Linea is the armed wing of the the Juarez Drug Cartel and is considered to be the most vicious of armed groups in Mexico.

La Linea has been involved in a low level public relations war with local gangs affiliated with the Sinaloa Drug Cartel in the last few months. Several times in the last four months "narcografitti" has appeared in Juarez purportedly from both group accusing each other and warning the public about criminal involvement with police.

Much of the information provided in that PR battle included accusations by the Sinaloa Drug Cartel that several Chihuahua state and Federal officials were on the payroll of La Linea.

It was a La Linea linked hitman, Cristian Rosado, who confessed involvement in the murder of, Sandra Ivonne Salas, an assistant to Gonzalez June 30th.

Patricia Gonzalez stepped down from her post in early October following the change of government following the July elections.

Chihuahua: 1 Dies, Several Wounded in Prison Riots
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
Two prison riots at the Achilles Serdan Centro de Readaptacion Sosial (CERESO) have claimed the life of one inmate and ten others wounded including six prison staff, Mexican news sources say.

On Saturday prisoners temporarily took hostages following a fight in the prison commissary. Three guards were hurt in the fight. The fight began when an inmate was accused to throwing a dead animal into the food.
Ick. Not kosher either, but that probably wasn't a concern for most of the inmates.
On Sunday, a second brawl took place when prisoners took hostages again despite prison officials countermeasures placed the day before, and then took control of the guard towers at the facility.

Security troops including a detachment of the Mexican Army stormed the prison attempting to regain control and were countered with beatings by inmates.

Two Mexican Federal agents were reported shot and wounded and reports said dozens of prisoners were hurt. The fear in the Sunday riots was that inmates were planning a mass escape, so in addition to the internal fighting, Mexican security forces had cordoned off the prison to prevent any escapes.

Rubén Muñoz Flores, 26, serving time in prison for drugs was shot to death Sunday in the second much faster attempt to regain control of the prison after prisoners in Modules One and Seven attempted to take control.

Four inmates were wounded in police action Sunday, one with a gunshot wound to the chest.

A subsequent search on the prison by Mexican Federal agents turned up several weapons including two AK-47 assault rifles, three 9mm pistols, a .357 caliber revolver, about 100 rounds of ammunition including shells for a 12 gauge shotgun.

Authorities refused to say how the inmate acquired the weapons.

The CERESO at Achilles Serdan is about five kilometers due east of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, and houses mainly Mexican Federal prisonser.

Forty guards at the facility resigned en masse only a few days before the riots protesting poor security for prison staff, following a massacre of six prison guards in Chihuahua last week.

"The school's principal made a call at 04:00, Moscow time, to the "01" fire emergency service reporting about a loud bang in the school's canteen," Davydov said. The blast knocked out the windows and doors and damaged the internal partitions of the building's extension, in which the canteen is located.

Fire fighters who arrived at the scene called an operational investigation group.

A source in law enforcement agencies told Itar-Tass that experts have ruled out a household gas kaboom version. The investigation is in progress.

There were no people inside the building at the moment of the incident.

Nork Food Shortage About 1 Million Tons
The World Food Programme estimates North Korea has one million metric tons of food less than it needs to feed its population this year.

Josette Sheeran, the executive director of the Rome-based UN food agency, told reporters in Japan on Tuesday that she will travel to the North to urge Pyongyang to provide enough food and nutrition for its hunger-stricken people.

Adding that up to 50-percent of children in North Korea are malnourished, she said that the WFP will provide food to some 600,000 young children and pregnant women there. Sheeran also called for global assistance for the UN food branch in the communist country, saying it is only 22 percent funded and needs urgent support.
So give generously so that the Nork army can be fed properly ...

Baby Face Khadr pleads guilty to all charges
[Dawn] A Canadian accused of killing an American soldier as a teenage Al-Qaeda jihad boy pleaded guilty Monday as part of a deal that avoids a war crimes trial for someone labeled a "child soldier" by his defenders.

Omar Baby Face Khadr pleaded to five charges including murder for throwing a grenade that mortally maimed the soldier during a fierce raid on an Al-Qaeda compound in Afghanistan in 2002. The now 24-year-old defendant also admitted to planting improvised bombs and receiving weapons training from the terrorist network.

The exact terms of the plea agreement were not immediately disclosed. Khadr will now face a military jury for a sentencing hearing that is expected to last several days. The panel cannot impose a sentence more severe than the plea agreement. His trial had been scheduled to start Monday and he faced a possible life sentence.

Dressed in a dark suit instead of the solid color jumpsuits typically worn by prisoners held at the US base in Cuba, the defendant, who was born in Toronto and speaks fluent English, repeatedly answered "yes" to a series of questions from the military judge making sure he understood the charges against him.

Khadr, who had previously pleaded not guilty and rejected a plea agreement, stared down at the defense table without making eye contact with the judge. Asked if anyone had made any promises to him so that he would plead guilty, he answered simply "no."

"You should only do this if you truly believe it is in your best interests," the judge told him.

Earlier, his lawyers had said they hoped to secure an agreement because he faced a possible life sentence under a military tribunal system that they believe favors the prosecution despite changes adopted under President Barack B.O. Obama.

"There's not much choice," attorney Dennis Edney said. "He either pleads guilty to avoid trial, or he goes to trial, and the trial is an unfair process."

Khadr would be eligible for transfer back to his native Canada after serving the first year of his sentence as part of the agreement, said Army Col. Patrick Parrish, the military judge.

Canada's government issued a terse reaction, noting that he had pleaded guilty.

"This matter is between Mr. Khadr and the US government. We have no further comment," said Catherine Loubier, a spokeswoman for Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon,in an e-mail.

Personally, I'd like to see him back here in Canuckistan so that I could take him on a . . . . on a . . . moose hunting trip. Yes, that's the answer, a moose hunting . . . . trip . . . . up north where the lakes are beginning to freeze over. Hmmmmmm.

India accuses Pakistan of cease-fire violation
[Dawn] India on Monday accused Pakistain of violating a cease-fire agreement in Kashmir after an Indian army soldier was killed in gunfire allegedly from Pakistain's side of the disputed Himalayan region.

Army front man Lt. Col. Biplab Nath said that Pak soldiers fired machine guns and rockets on an Indian military post late Sunday night, killing the soldier near the frontier.

The Mighty Pak Army could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

India and Pakistain have fought two wars over Kashmir since they gained independence more than 60 years ago, but their forces have observed a cease-fire there since November 2003, albeit one punctuated by occasional incidents of shooting.

India also accuses Pakistain of helping hard boyz cross from its portion of Kashmir to the Indian side, which Pakistain denies.

Sunday's shooting occurred in Poonch sector, 110 miles southwest of Srinagar, Nath said.

He said the Indian side did not retaliate as they did not want the situation to escalate.

''We're lodging a protest with our Pak counterparts at an appropriate level,'' he said.
