Afghanistan
Polish special forces capture a top Talibunny?
Troops from the First Special Commander Regiment (Lubliniec) have reportedly captured a local Taliban commander in the Ghazni district, south east Afghanistan who is on the US most wanted list.

The man, Mullah Dawood,
I thought he was dead - that should make him easier to capture
is reportedly on the US 'hit list' of most wanted Taliban - or Joint Effects Priority List (JPEL) - and the Rzeczpospolita daily is describing his capture as Poland's "biggest success" during its mission in the war-torn country so far.

The Mullah Dawood captured by Polish troops is apparently not the same local Taliban leader as the one Australian troops were claiming to have killed in August.
Lotsa Mullah Dawoods I guess, sort of their version of John Smith?
ABC News reported at the time that a "Mullah Dawood was killed in Uruzgan province last month, in an operation involving Australian and Afghan national security forces."

Russia to help in Afghanistan
Moscow is also concerned about a flow of heroin through central Asia to its cities from Afghanistan. And it urgently wishes to reassert its influence in the region.
Russia is going to help with logistics it seems, but I'm hoping they step in and take care of heroin and opium myself. They've got a huge problem because of this, so they'd be just the ones to do the job on more than one level.

#5  Look at Karzais shit the last couplke of days accepting bags of money from Iran.

We invited Iran in in 2002 to help stabilize things, including helping finance the running of the government -- they were one of the parties that agreed to put Mr. Karzai in office at the time. We fly in planeloads of cash weekly to help run the place -- Afghanistan is a cash-basis society, which means they need lots of it, much more than the local economy can produce, even if they had enough printing presses. Finally, President Obama has promised to pull American troops out next year, which leaves both President Karzai and the country and people of Afghanistan swinging in the wind in a region just full of nasties carrying big sticks to beat the Afghan pinata with.

If I were Hamid Karzai, I'd alternate being furious with America with furiously trying to figure out how to survive the various wolves about to tear at his carcass. It's really not wise to refuse the Godfather's money when you've only got a popgun to protect yourself with, and no spare corks.

Somali pirates free German cargo ship
[Iran Press TV] Somali pirates have released the hijacked German merchant vessel Beluga Fortune along with its 16-strong crew without getting a ransom payment.

"The cool-headed behavior...of the Beluga crew on board and the quick action of navy units...left the pirates no other option than to give up their dream of a million (dollar) ransom and to flee," Rooters cited Beluga Shipping as saying in a statement released on Monday.

The freight ship had been seized on Sunday about 750 nautical miles east of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Beluga Fortunate was the second commercial vessel to be captured off the coast of Somalia in the last three days. Somali pirates hijacked the Singapore-flagged liquefied petroleum gas tanker MV York on Saturday night as it was traveling from Mombasa to Mahe in the Seychelles.

Shabwa Tribesmen Fight Army Demanding Jobs in S. Korean Company
[Yemen Post] Military reinforcements arrived on Monday in the Jardan district, Shabwa, after fierce confrontations erupted between the forces and rustics demanding jobs in a South Korean petroleum company.

The Alsahwa website quoted eyewitnesses as saying that heavy weapons were used in the clashes that broke out in the Fareha village, 50 km in northeast Ataq city.

Tribesmen from the clans of Al Dhabab
Ah, yes. The Dhoobabs of al-Dhabab...
and Al Sari'a demanded the government to allocate posts in the KNOC Company for them, and when their demand was ignored they forced the Company to halt its operations, the website said.

The authorities intervened after the move,
"Here, you! Cease and desist!"
but the rustics whipped out their shootin' arns and opened fire, triggering the festivities.

There were no reports of casualties.

15 Al-Qaeda Fundamentals Surrender in Abyan Province
[Yemen Post] As many as 15 hard boyz suspected of links with Al-Qaeda terror group have surrendered to Abbyan's governor, Ahmed Al-Maisari, late Monday, local media reported.
"We give up!"
"Yeah! Don't shoot!"
"Put us in rehab, okay?"
"Yeah, with Lindsey Lohan!"

Following a good talking to with tribal Sheikhs in Loudar and Moudia, the 15 jihadists finally decided to hang it up, it said, adding that the jihadist group was later handed over to the governor by the tribal Sheikh's who took charge of their surrender.

Yemen has lately become a focal point for Islamist krazed killer including those from Al-Qaeda.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
experts in Al-Qaeda's affairs said that there was a great need for a considerable pressure on the Yemeni government to crackdown on terror groups. The merger of Al-Qaeda's Yemeni and Saudi branches that the AQAP took shape in January 2009 came following the massive campaign launched by Saudi forces against Al-Qaeda, which led to several of its members seeking refuge in neighboring Yemen, they added.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Turkey seizes al-Qaeda suspects
Police in Turkey have arrested 12 people suspected of links to Islamist militant network al-Qaeda in Istanbul and Van province, local media report.

They picked up the suspects in two simultaneous operations and are holding them on suspicion of plotting terrorist attacks, officials said. Weapons, bomb-making items, explosives and digital devices were found.

While Turkey has a history of terrorist attacks, al-Qaeda is not thought to have a strong presence there. However, in January police arrested more than 150 people suspected of al-Qaeda links in cities including Ankara and Istanbul.

Similar raids were also carried out in 2009 and 2008.

Some Turkish al-Qaeda members have been killed or captured in neighbouring Iraq, and some are known to have been trained in Afghanistan. But al-Qaeda militants in Turkey are usually believed to come from Arab countries, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Turkey's militant activity is usually linked to Kurdish separatism or, more rarely, the extreme left.

Bad guys' hideout found in deserted mine in Kabardino-Balkaria
(Itar-Tass) -- A camp of beturbanned goons has been found at the Molibden deserted mine in Tyrnyauz in Kabardino-Balkaria, a republican police representative told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.
I think I saw this movie on Saturday morning teevee when I was 8...
"Cots, camouflage uniforms, food, drugs and ammunition were found in a deserted administrative building of the mine," he said.

The police search for tough guyz blocked inside the mine has been on in Kabardino-Balkaria for seven days. "About ten kilometers of the mine passages have been examined. In all, there are nine floors of the mine with the length of nearly 300 kilometers. Some corridors are not linked to one another. Spetsnaz servicemen are examining the corridors day and night, in full darkness. Some of the corridors are flooded," the source said.
Have they thought about just closing the mine up and walking away?
The beturbanned goons were traced on October 20. There was a shootout and they were blocked inside the mine. A bully boy and a serviceman of the Elbrus police department were killed in fighting. An OMON serviceman from Volgograd was injured.

The counter terrorist operation regime was announced in Tyrnyauz. The police ordered the bad boyz to surrender on October 21. There was no response, and the Spetsnaz operation started. A Kalashnikov submachine gun, a pistol and 106 cartridges of various calibers were found 3.5 kilometers away from the mine entry. A homemade bomb was unarmed in an abandoned vehicle of the bad guys.

Police detain Baksan HPP saboteurs
(Itar-Tass) - Police have detained the persons who were directly involved in the attack on the Baksan hydropower plant in Kabardino-Balkaria on July 21, 2010, an official at the Investigation Committee of the Russian Federation (SK) said on Tuesday.

"As a result of the competent investigative actions and search, the SK, together with the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service (FSB) ascertained the identities of all the saboteurs, who were members of the gang operating in the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria's Baksan district," the official said.

"The investigators have evidence of their involvement in the murder of Baksan precinct investigator Albert Shibzukhov and interrogating officer of the Bailiffs Service Murat Dokshukin, whose decapitated bodies were found in December 2009. The gang also killed holy man Khazrail Malbakhov in June 2001, road coppers at the bus terminal in the town f Baksan in April 2010, police offices near the village of Islamei in September 2010 at the Kyzburun checkpoint, and attempted to murder an SFB officer in the town of Baksan in the summer of 2010 and district coppers in the village of Zayukovo," the SK said.

"Several days after the sabotage, police destroyed two gang members -- Ruslan Orshokdugov and Rustam Seyunov. Two other gunnies were detained. They confessed to sabotaging the HPP and named their accomplices. The investigators found out that the crime had been committed with the view of causing damage to the state.

"Investigative and other procedural actions are underway to solidify the basis of evidence. Also, law-enforcement bodies are looking for other saboteurs," the SK said.

On July 21, 2010, unidentified gunnies attacked the Baksan hydroelectric power plant in Kabardino-Balkaria. They killed two coppers who were guarding the station, and planted five homemade bombs with a yield of 1.5 to 3 kilograms of TNT. The ensuring kabooms and fire put three HPP generators out of order.

Kim Jr Says Norks Need Food, Not Bullets
Careful son, wait until Pops is dead and buried before you start spouting off ...
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's son and heir says the impoverished country needs food more than bullets. "In the past, it was all right to have bullets and no food, but now we must have food even though we don't have bullets," Kim junior, who was recently promoted to vice chairman of the Workers Party's powerful Central Military Commission, was quoted by sources on Monday as saying.

Quoting a source familiar with North Korea-China relations, the Yomiuri Shimbun said Kim Jong-un made the remarks during a visit to Kimchaek city in North Hamgyong Province in late September, when the Workers Party congress took place. The Japanese daily said the comments are confirmed in documents recently disseminated to party officials.

It is unclear whether Kim made them before or after the party congress that elevated him to his new post on Sept. 28.

Court lets US keep details on Bagram inmates secret: ACLU
[Dawn] A US court rule Monday that the Pentagon can withhold key information about hundreds of detainees held at a US military prison in Afghanistan, according the American Civil Liberties Union, which brought the suit.

The ruling came in response to a suit filed by the ACLU against the US Defence Department and the Central Intelligence Agency seeking information about inmates detained at a US installation at Bagram Air Base.

The ACLU had been seeking access to records on the detention and treatment of prisoners at Bagram, which now is known as Parwan.

The Pentagon has released the names of the 645 prisoners detained there as of September 2009, but has kept secret other vital information including the detainees' nationalities, how long they have been held, in what country they were detained and the circumstances surrounding their capture.

The ACLU said the case was heard in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York which, in denying the motion, also ruled that the CIA did not act improperly when it refused to even confirm or deny having records about the rendition and interrogation of Bagram detainees.

The civil rights group decried the ruling, saying in a statement Monday that Bagram had "become the new Guantanamo," referring to the US-run military prison in Cuba.

"The public remains in the dark when it comes to basic facts about the facility and whom our military is holding in indefinite military detention there," said Melissa Goodman, staff attorney with the group.

"The public has a right to know how long the US has kept people locked up in military detention and under what circumstances," she said.
No, the public doesn't, unless the mooks are Americans.
"The lack of transparency about these key facts is even more disturbing considering the possibility that the US will continue holding and interrogating prisoners at Bagram well into the future," Goodman said.

Hawaii man charged in international terrorism case
[Dawn] A Hawaii man accused of traveling to Pakistain in a failed effort to join the Taliban or similar group has been jugged.
Abdel Hameed Shehadeh, 21, was charged with making false statements in a matter involving international terrorism, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Monday in the Eastern District of New York. If convicted, Shehadeh would face a maximum sentence of eight years imprisonment.

A US Department of Justice news release said Shehadeh was jugged Friday in Honolulu, and removal proceedings were scheduled to begin Monday. The US attorney's office in Honolulu referred questions concerning the case to the US attorney's office in Brooklyn, New York, which didn't immediately return an after-hours call seeking comment.

It was unknown Monday night if Shehadeh had an attorney.

According to the complaint, Shehadeh, a US citizen, lived on Staten Island, New York, in early 2008 when he devised a plan to travel to Pakistain to join the Taliban or a similar fighting group.

To put the plan into effect, Shehadeh flew on a one-way ticket from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Islamabad, Pakistain, on June 13, 2008, the news release said. But upon landing in Pakistain, Shehadeh was denied entry by Pak officials, and he returned to the US, it said.

Under questioning by FBI agents and New York police detectives, Shehadeh initially said he traveled to Pakistain to visit an Islamic university and attend a friend's wedding, the release said.

The complaint alleged Shehadeh subsequently admitted to FBI agents in Hawaii that the true purpose of his trip to Pakistain was to join a fighting group such as the Taliban.

The complaint also alleged Shehadeh attempted to recruit another person to join him immediately after the two discussed a sermon by radical US-born Mohammedan holy man Anwar al-Awlaki.

Shehadeh later attempted to enlist in the US Army at the Times Square recruiting station in New York City, but his application was denied when it was discovered he concealed his trip to Pakistain, the complaint said.

Shehadeh claimed he wanted to enlist for career opportunities and benefits, but the complaint alleged his true motive was to deploy to Iraq, where he intended to desert and fight against the US military alongside Iraqi Islamic myrmidon forces.

In addition, the complaint alleged Shehadeh created and administered multiple websites dedicated to spreading violent jihadist ideology.

''As this case demonstrates, we and our partners in law enforcement are committed to preventing terrorist acts before the plots can be set in motion,'' Loretta E. Lynch, US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in the news release. ''We will spare no effort, and will deploy all available resources, to accomplish this mission.''

a government official said.

It is one of several Afghan border regions where the army is fighting orcs.

Khan says 600 Islamic fascisti and 70 soldiers have died in Orakzai since March.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran arrests three over Zahedan blast
[Iran Press TV] Iran has jugged three members of the Jundallah terrorist group, who had a major role in a deadly kaboom at a mosque in the southeast of the country.

On July 15, two bombs were detonated in quick succession in front of the Zahedan Grand Mosque in Sistan-Baluchestan Province. At least 27 people bit the dust and more than 270 others were maimed in the blasts.

"These people were tasked with preparing equipment and required devices, the transport of explosive vests to Zahedan, readying and preparing the two main bombers, and transmitting the news about their operation to the group," the head of the provincial intelligence department said on Tuesday.

The unnamed official was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying that the three terrorists, whose identities were not revealed, were handed to judicial authorities.

"The three jugged beturbanned goons had illegally entered a neighboring country before this blind act and received the necessary training for recruiting people and anti-security activities," the official added.

Over the past decade, Jundallah has conducted many deadly attacks in Iran which have resulted in the deaths of scores of civilians.

Iran says it has "concrete evidence," which shows NATO and US forces in Pakistain and Afghanistan provide terrorist groups with equipment and weaponry as well as financial and intelligence support.

Lebanese Shoots and Wounds Siddiq in Germany, Report
The so-called key witness in the 2005 liquidation of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri Zuheir Siddiq was reportedly shot and maimed in Germany.

The website "Beirut Observer" on Tuesday quoted sources as saying Siddiq survived an liquidation attempt a "few days ago."

It said Siddiq was hit by three bullets and was taken to hospital in "critical condition."

The website said authorities identified one of the assailants as a resident from southern Leb.

The report could not be independently verified.

Two weeks ago, Siddiq had revealed to New TV that he had entered the Special Tribunal for Leb's witness protection program.

He also said that he had contacted the international investigation with the assistance of Syria's military intelligence chief Ghazi Kanaan, who had committed suicide in Syria in 2005 under mysterious circumstances.

Last week, Naharnet had asked the court's registrar from the international court's headquarters in the Hague if the tribunal's witness protection program had begun operation, but the official refused to answer the question.

#1  Dangling him as bait? Or just trying to get rid of him. If the STL's key witness has been placed in a witness protection program but can be found by (implied) multiple assailants and shot three times, it isn't much of a protection program. Maybe its intent is to isolate the target (Siddiq) and minimize collateral damage? Under the bus with you Saddiq?

Iran begins fueling nuclear plant
[Al Jazeera] Iran has began loading fuel into the core of its first nuclear power plant in the southwestern city of Bushehr, officials have said.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mohammad Ahmadian, a senior nuclear official, said: "Nearly 160 fuel rods have been placed into the core of the reactor, which will be the energy production stage and a key stage for its operation".

Ali Akbar Salehi, the vice president of the nuclear programme, said on state television that it will take "one or two months to reach a 40 or 50 per cent nominal power".

The 1,000-MW Bushehr plant was built with the help of Russia, who will operate the facilityby supplying its nuclear fuel and taking away the nuclear waste.

Western powers fear Iran's nuclear programme is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran has been subject to four rounds of UN sanctions because of the programme.

"Political pressures like sanctions will not impede our progress and will not keep our nation from exercising its inalienable right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology," Ramin Mehmanparast, Iran's foreign ministry front man, said in a news conference in the Iranian capital.

Iran expects the plant to finally begin generating energy by early next year.
