Egypt Court Sentences 23 Pro-Democracy Protesters to 3 Years
The trials will continue until all resistance -- and resistors -- is quelled.
[AnNahar] An Egyptian court sentenced 23 freedom fighters on Sunday to three years in prison each for holding an unlicensed protest, after international calls to free the defendants.

The rights activists include Yara Sallam and Sanaa Seif, described by Amnesia Amnesty International as "prisoners of conscience."

The Cairo court also ordered each of the 23 defendants to pay a fine of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (about $1,390).

Some of the activists had supported the military's overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in July last year which unleashed a deadly crackdown on his Islamist supporters.

They had since turned on the new authorities as it extended a crackdown on all protests.

The verdict, one of several against secular-leaning activists in recent months, may be appealed.

The defendants were accused of holding an illegal protest on June 21 calling for the release of detainees and the annulment of a law that bans all but police-sanctioned demonstrations.

"The ruling is political, it has no legal grounding," alleged Ahmed Ezzat, one of the defense lawyers, after judge Abdelrahman al-Zawary pronounced his verdict.

Ansar Al-Sharia moves to consolidate power in Derna as locals look to liberation by Libyan army
[Libya Herald] Following last week's opening of an Islamic Court in Derna, the Shoura Council of Islamic Youth (SCIY), controlled by Al-Sharia, is now moving to set up a civil administration for the town and area that they now call the Province of Cyrenaica (Wilayah Barca), part of the Islamic Caliphate. They have opened a tax and financial office to collect taxes (presumably the Islamic tax Zakat) and regulate prices in the areas.

In their forays into the education sector, they are also reported to have banned the teaching of foreign languages, mathematics and science and closed both the local Higher Education Institute and the law department at the town's Omar Mukhtar University, the later because it was not teaching Sharia law, the former because of gender mixing among staff and students.

Earlier this month SCIY declared it allegiance to Daesh and the Islamic Caliphate.

A Derna source has told the Libya Herald today that SCIY rule is deeply unpopular among the local population and that they are waiting for the Libyan army to liberate the town.

Although the Operation Dignity strategy has been to cut off and isolate the town, it now appears that a military move may happen sooner rather than later.

According to the source, the Derna is now alive with rumours that LNA units have arrived at Um Arrizam, some 40 kilometres east of Derna, awaiting orders to attack.

The report has not been confirmed. However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
sources at the House of Representatives told this newspaper this evening that General Sulaiman Mahmoud Al-Obeidi, who heads LNA forces in Tobruk, had said he was ready to surround Derna and was awaiting final instructions from the Chief of Staff.

The source in Derna meanwhile said that that bombing raids on a number of Ansar targets in and around the town by the LNA air force were continuing.

Western mountain military operations under Chief of Staff, not Hafter or Zintan
[Libya Herald] Libyan Army operations in the Jebel Nafusa (Western Mountains) region are being carried out under the Chief of Staff, not retired general Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, who is leading Operation Dignity in the east of the country, or the Zintanis, according to a military commander.

"Our orders come directly from the Chief of Staff, not from General Haftar," Commander of Military Operations in western Libya Colonel Idris Madi told the Libya Herald. "The enemy is the same but there is a difference between the front line in the east and the front line in the west."

In the western region, operations started under the direct orders of the Chief of Staff, whereas in the east, operations started before orders were given and before the new Chief of Staff had been appointed, he said.

Operation Dignity, an offensive against the presence of Islamist-affiliated militias in Benghazi, was started by General Haftar and breakaway members of the official military forces based in the east in May. It was inspired out of frustration at a series of individual liquidations of members of the military, police and activists in both Benghazi and Derna which has left hundreds dead, without a single successful investigation or prosecution. Operation Dignity was finally brought under the official Libyan Army earlier this month.

By contrast, western military operations began in July when the Libya Dawn

International Airport. Units withdrew from Tripoli to the Jebel Nafusa and surrounding area to regroup and reorganise themselves, Madi said, with operations restarting in early September.

He said another difference lay in the motivation behind the fighting. "Here in the western region, the fighting is based on political reasons, whereas in the east the problem is more about beliefs and ideologies," Madi explained.

Bouka reported captured in Garyounis while Libya Dawn claims to be heading to Benghazi
[Libya Herald] It has been announced on television in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and Misrata that a new organization called Libya Dawn

Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
2 has been set up to "liberate" Benghazi and the east from Khalifa Hafter and his Operation Dignity forces. According to Libya Dawn-contolled Wataniya TV in Tripoli and An-Nabaa TV, which also supports Libya Dawn, the new forces arrived in Benghazi today. However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
this has been dismissed as wishful thinking by officials in the eastern city.

"It's not true," Ahmed Al-Mismari, front man for the General Chief of Staff, told the Libya Herald. "All the entrances to Benghazi are under our control."

Residents in the south of Benghazi likewise said there had been no sign of any such brigade.

The battle in the city continued to go badly today for Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and its allies in the Benghazi Revolutionaries' Shoura Council (BRSC).

In heavy fighting around Benghazi University in Garyounis, occupied by the BRSC, several sources reported that Bouka, the nomme de guerre of Mohammed Al-Araibi, commander of the Brega Martyrs Brigade
...aligned with Benghazi's Revolutionary Shura Council and the forces ranged against Operation Dignity. Part of the ramshackle coalition of brigades that opened fire on the Libyan Congress building because their chosen prime ministerial candidate Omar Al-Hassi failed to win a vote. Al-Hassi went on to start his own rival government in Tripoli...
, had been captured in the fighting. For his part, Mismari refused to mention any names, saying only that a "criminal" who was the commander of a major brigade had been caught.

Also reported captured today were two leading Ansar commanders named as Ali Al-Asabai and Fahim Al-Kuwafi. They are said to have been caught at the Bersis checkpoint northeast of the city.

Bouka, who was reported injured last month, had earlier today released a video from inside the university in which he swore Dire Revenge for his Sidi Khalifa home which was attacked and burned the week before last. He also said that he would destroy Hafter and his forces.

According to airforce commander Saqr Adam Geroushi, the university's administration building was badly damaged in the fighting, with offices containing files and student papers going up in flames. He blamed Ansar al-Sharia for the destruction. A member of 204 Tank Brigade, Ahmed Sherif, was also reported killed in the university festivities.

The names of others maimed or killed in the action have not been released.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie ducked another tomato...
the army has warned residents in Sabri district to leave the area because heavy weaponry is to be used against remaining Ansar snipers there. One, named Ahmed Gadur, was reported killed and another, Khaled Al-Khafafi, as having surrendered. Yesterday, the LNA said that two of its soldiers were killed and 13 others injured in festivities in Sabri.

It is also reported today that homes belonging to Ansar supporters in the district and in Majouri have been set on fire by neighbours.

In other news in the city, nine bodies were said to have been found in the Libya Shield
...a conglomerate of pro-Islamist militias deployed across Libya. It reports to the Libyan defense ministry and is organized like a real army unit. Its commander used to head a Benghazi brigade called Free Libya Martyrs...
No 1 base operated by Wisam Ben Hamid in Kuwaifiya district and which was captured earlier. Some of the bodies had been burned and are believed to be those opponents of Ansar and its allies.

Egypt court hands jail terms to 23 activists
[Iran Press TV] An Egyptian court has sentenced 23 activists to three years in prison each for violating a controversial legislation that imposes stringent restrictions on public protests in the North African country.

The Cairo court handed down the sentence on Sunday and also fined each of the activists 10,000 Egyptian pounds (USD 1,400).

The defendants were found guilty of holding an unlicensed protest four months ago and blocking off a road during their demonstration.

The activists were enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on June 21 after taking part in a rally, which called for the release of detainees and the annulment of the restrictive anti-protest law.

Ahmed Ezzat, one of the defense lawyers, condemned the verdict as "political," arguing that "It has no legal grounding."

Ahead of Sunday's verdict, Amnesia Amnesty International also called on Egyptian officials to release the activists.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, deputy director of the human rights

Thirty Adolescents Abducted in Northeast Nigeria
No question that the truce is over, if it ever actually existed beyond the imagination of an experienced con man.
[AnNahar] Around 30 adolescents -- some of them girls aged as young as 11 -- have been kidnapped in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
over the weekend by suspected Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
rebels, a local village chief told news hounds on Sunday.

"The bad boys... grabbed young people, boys and girls, from our region," said Alhaji Shettima Maina, who is in charge of the Mafa village around 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the city of Maiduguri.

"They took all boys aged 13 and over... and all girls aged 11 and more. According to our information, 30 young people were kidnapped in the last two days."

Another village elder, Mallam Ashiekh Mustapha, confirmed the account.

Both men said 17 people were also killed in recent days in a Boko Haram attack on the nearby village of Ndongo.

Boko Haram, which has been waging a bloody insurgency since 2009, has been responsible for waves of attacks and abductions.

In April, the Islamist rebel group snatched more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in northeast Nigeria, triggering an international outcry.

Kidnapping young women and girls -- as well as forcibly conscripting young men and boys to fight for Boko Haram -- is a well-established tactic by the murderous Moslems.

Some estimates put the number of women held by the group in the high hundreds. Most are believed to be forced into marriages with rebels.

Maina said his village and areas around it were targeted in nearly daily raids by Boko Haram, prompting many residents to flee to the city of Maiduguri for safety.

He said he had pleaded for help from the Nigerian government but that so far none had been forthcoming.

"Around 10 non-combatants were killed and a number were maimed, including women and kiddies," one tribal source said. "But because it is dark and due to the continuing festivities, we were unable to retrieve all the victims," he told Rooters, adding that dozens of families had fled the fighting.

There were no details of casualties among the fighters.

The northern-based Houthis established themselves as power brokers in Yemen last month by capturing Sanaa against scant resistance from the administration of President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, angering al Qaeda and Sunni Moslem tribal allies.

Another tribal source said heavy fighting was underway in the Khobza area, another stronghold held by Ansar al-Sharia and its allies, in al-Baydah.

"The Houthis are advancing to control the rest of Qaifa (tribal) areas and the night could see even more violent confrontations," the tribal official, who declined to be named, told Rooters by telephone.

The Houthis, with Yemeni army backing, earlier battled their way to al-Manasseh, a small town regarded as the main Ansar al-Sharia stronghold in the area.

Tribal sources said the Ansar al-Sharia fighters withdrew to another district called Bakla, about 3 km (two miles) away.

Yemen's city of Rada'a has been the scene of fierce festivities as Houthi fighters push to drive out al-Qaeda-linked hard boyz from the region.

The Houthi fighters moved into al-Manasseh area in al-Bayda province on Sunday, driving out al-Qaeda-linked hard boyz from the area regarded as one of the strongholds of the hard boyz in the strategic province in central parts of the country.

According to tribal sources, all those killed were holy warriors, but there has been no official confirmation from the government or the Houthi side. Some tribal sources have put the corpse count at about 20.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Arrests Five over Deadly Attack Blamed on PKK
[AnNahar] Turkey on Sunday locked away
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
five people over the killing of three off-duty soldiers in the Kurdish-majority southeast of the country blamed by the authorities on separatist Lion of Islams, the official Anatolia news agency.

The three soldiers were bumped off in the middle of the afternoon Saturday while walking in the town center of Yuksekova in the eastern Hakkari province.

The army blamed the attack on the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a three decade insurgency for self-rule but largely observed a ceasefire since March 2013.

As part of the investigation, police conducted several morning raids on addresses in Yuksekova, Anatolia said.

Five suspects named as Mesut K., Islam B., M.Ali A., Orhan B. and Bayram A. were arrested and being interrogated, it said.

The attack, for which so far no claim of responsibility has been made, dealt a heavy blow to efforts led by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to make peace with the Kurds.

In a new crime linked by some Turkish media to the PKK, the corpse of a village guard who had been missing for two months was found hanging from a telegraph post in the Tatvan district of the southeastern Bitlis region.

Pak jets kill 18 militants in Khyber region
Pakistan's army said its jets have killed at least 18 terrorists militants as part of an ongoing offensive to eliminate militants' hideouts and ammunition stockpiles in the Khyber tribal region.

An army statement on Sunday said the jets destroyed five such terrorist hideouts with "precise strikes" during the offensive late Saturday night. Besides the terrorists militants killed, the army said the strikes destroyed huge caches of arms and ammunition hidden in various parts of the region, near the Afghan border.

The Pakistani army is now regularly targeting terrorist's militants' hideouts in Khyber, since fighters fled there from North Waziristan tribal region where it has been conducting a months-long operation. The offensive has also driven thousands of local tribesmen to flee leave their areas and head for safety in the main northwestern city of Peshawar.

The blast Monday, which occurred at a security checkpoint outside Jurf al-Sakhar, maimed another 25. The attacker was driving a Humvee vehicle packed with explosives.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Sunday that recapturing Jurf-al-Sakhar, located about 50 kilometers south of Baghdad, was a "fatal blow" against the Islamic State group.

The Sunni holy warriors had held the town since July.

Syria's state news agency SANA reported on Monday that the government was providing military support to Kurdish forces to help them battle Islamic State fighters.

The action, if true, would mean Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

and his Western enemies could be backing the same forces against Islamist hard boys.

The main Syrian Kurdish party, which has repeatedly denied that it has cooperated with the Damascus government, described the report as propaganda.

SANA said that the aid included direct and indirect military support but did not say which groups were recipients or when Damascus last sent military aid to Kurds.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Kurds Foil New Islamic State Bid To Cut Off Turkish Border
[IsraelTimes] Kurdish forces in the Syrian town of Kobani thwarted a new attempt by fighters from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group Sunday to cut off the border with Turkey before Iraqi Kurdish reinforcements can deploy.

The pre-dawn assault marked the fourth straight day that the jihadists had attacked the Syrian side of the border crossing as the Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters prepare to head for Kobani, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Kurdish forces, backed by US-led Arclight airstrikes, have been holding out for weeks against an IS offensive around Kobani which has become a high-profile symbol of efforts to stop the advance of the jihadists.

Last week, under heavy US pressure, Turkey unexpectedly announced that it would allow the peshmerga fighters to cross its territory to join the fight for Kobani.

The main Syrian Kurdish fighting force in the town has close links with the outlawed rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a three-decade insurgency in southeastern Turkey and Ankara had previously resisted calls to allow in reinforcements.

The peshmerga forces are "ready to go," but they are not expected to deploy to Kobani before Monday at the earliest, Kurdish news agency Rudaw reported.

"Technical issues" concerning their transit through Turkey still had to be resolved, Rudaw said without elaborating.

The names of all of the fighters in the force have been submitted to both Ankara and Washington, it added.

The Democratic Union Party (PYD) which dominates Kobani agreed to the offer of the peshmerga troops.

Turkish suspicions
But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
charged in comments published on Sunday that the "terror" group did not really want the peshmerga forces to deploy to Kobani for fear of seeing its influence diminished.
"Nurse, the purple pills! He's doing that thing again!!"
"The PYD does not want the peshmerga to come," Erdogan said. "They don't want the peshmerga to come to Kobani and dominate it."

A new US-led air strike hit IS fighters in Kobani as the coalition kept up its air support for the town's defenders, an AFP correspondent on the Turkish side of the border reported.

But the lion's share of coalition strikes in recent days have been in neighboring Iraq as Washington has voiced mounting confidence that Kobani's fall to the jihadists can be prevented following US arms drops earlier this month.

The US-led military coalition fighting IS launched 22 air strikes in Iraq and one in Syria on Friday and Saturday, the Pentagon said.

Eleven of the bombings in the heavy barrage targeted IS units, buildings, positions and vehicles near Iraq's largest dam, north of IS-held second city djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
The strikes helped Kurdish forces to retake the town of Zumar, on the shores of Mosul Dam's huge reservoir, on Saturday after weeks of fighting with IS, a senior officer said.

"The PYD thinks its game will be spoiled if the peshmerga come. Their setup will be ruined."

The PKK and its allies have long had difficult relations with the parties that control the Kurdish regional government and its peshmerga forces in northern Iraq.

By contrast Ankara has developed a good working relationship with the Iraqi Kurdish authorities.

Syria raids rebel areas, kill 13 children
[ARABNEWS] Syrian government air strikes on two besieged, rebel-held areas of the central province of Homs killed at least 31 people, 13 of them children, a monitoring group said on Sunday.

Sixteen members of the same family were among 24 people killed in raids late Saturday and Sunday on the town of Talbisseh, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, updating an earlier toll.

They included 12 children and three women, said the Britannia-based monitoring group which has a wide network of sources inside Syria.

Talbisseh was one of Syria's first areas to fall under rebel government control, after the 2011 outbreak of a revolt against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...

It has been under total army siege for two years, and near-daily bombardment.

In the Waer district on the outskirts of Homs, the only area of Syria's third city still in rebel hands, air strikes on Sunday killed seven people, including a child, the Observatory said.

Activists say army bombing of densely-populated Waer has escalated, marring hopes of a truce similar to those reached in other parts of the country.

The escalation came after 47 children were killed in an Oct. 1 suicide kaboom at a school in a government-held area of Homs city.

"The head of the military security branch was changed" after the school attack, said Hassan Abul Zein, an activist in Waer who spoke to AFP via the Internet.

"The new head of the branch has launched a barbaric campaign against the neighbourhood... where the humanitarian situation is deplorable," he said.

Homs was once dubbed "the capital of the revolution" against Assad.

But government forces retook control of the whole of the rest of the city in May when rebel fighters withdrew from central districts under a UN-brokered deal that ended a punishing two-year siege.

Elsewhere in the war-ravaged country, 12 civilians from the same family, including two women, were killed in government barrel bomb strikes on the rebel town of Busra Al-Sham in southern Syria's Daraa province.

Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
has accused the government of defying a February UN Security Council resolution that ordered all sides in the war to stop the "indiscriminate use of barrel bombs and other weapons in populated areas."

Also on Sunday, rebel fire on a school in the northern city of Aleppo killed a child and a man, and maimed 26 other people.

Aleppo city has been divided into government and rebel areas ever since a major offensive by Death Eaters in July 2012.

Syria's war began as a peaceful protest movement demanding political change, but morphed into a civil war after Assad's regime unleashed a brutal crackdown against dissent.

More than 180,000 people have been killed since March 2011, and nearly half the population have been forced by violence to flee their homes.
