10 Hurt in Controlled Blast of Car Bomb in Egypt's Sinai
[AnNahar] Ten people were hurt Tuesday when police in Egypt set off a controlled kaboom of a bomb-rigged car in the town of El-Arish in north of the restive Sinai peninsula, security officials said.

Those maimed were in their nearby home when the kaboom went off. They were taken to hospital.

"We blew up the car remotely. There was a half a tonne of explosives" inside, an interior ministry front man, Hani Abdel Latif, told AFP. It was too dangerous to try to defuse the bomb, he explained.

He added that those injured were cut by shattered window glass.

Tuesday's blast came during a nighttime curfew ordered since an October 24 suicide kaboom that killed 30 soldiers in a Sinai zone bordering the Gazoo Strip. It was not clear what the car-bomb was targeting.

Attacks targeting security forces in the peninsula have occurred frequently since the army toppled Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July last year. Most are claimed by jihadist groups reacting to crackdowns by authorities.

Egypt's Ansar Beit al-Maqdis jihadist group, which has carried out a string of deadly attacks from its Sinai stronghold, on Monday pledged loyalty to Islamic State

Suicide Bombs Hit Libya Government's Tobruk ex-Base
[AnNahar] Twin suicide kabooms Wednesday hit the remote town where Libya's internationally recognized government took refuge earlier this year, among a series of attacks in the restive east, security sources said.

At least 20 people were maimed, four of them seriously, when the bombers blew up vehicles in the heart of Tobruk, an interior ministry official said.

The town, close to the Egyptian border and 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) east of Tripoli

, is still the base of the contested parliament elected in June but the government recently moved its headquarters to the nearby town of Shahat.

Both government and parliament took refuge in the remote east when Islamist-backed militias seized the capital in August.

The official said the bombs did not strike near the hotel which houses parliament. But a politician said security measures had been stepped up for fear of further attacks.

The parliament was annulled by the supreme court last week but its anti-Islamist majority has refused to accept the judgement, saying it was handed down under duress.

Another boom-mobile, also believed to be a suicide kaboom, on Wednesday struck near the Al-Abraq air base, also in eastern Libya.

Five soldiers were maimed in the attack, a security official said, but a medic reported two dead.

Explosion shakes Egypt's volatile northern Sinai
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A boom-mobile outside a fast-food restaurant in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula maimed 10 people late on Tuesday when it went kaboom! as security forces were evacuating a heavily populated area, security and medical sources said, according to Rooters news agency.

The kaboom shook the town of Arish in northern Sinai, a volatile area where security forces have launched a crackdown on Islamist Lion of Islams, the sources said.

"We blew up the car remotely. There was a half a tonne of explosives" inside, an interior ministry front man, Hani Abdel Latif, told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

It was too dangerous to try to defuse the bomb, Abdel Latif said adding that those injured were cut by shattered window glass.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Tuesday's blast came during a nighttime curfew ordered since an Oct. 24 suicide kaboom that killed 30 soldiers in a Sinai zone bordering the Gazoo Strip. It was not clear what the car-bomb was targeting.

The remote but strategic Sinai Peninsula borders Israel, Gazoo and the Suez Canal.

Double bomb attacks in Tobruk and Beida
[Libya Herald] At least five soldiers have been killed with the number of casualties expected to rise in the coming hours following two deadly kabooms in the government held strongholds of Tobruk and Beida.

Mohammed Al-Hejazi, a front man for the Libyan National Army (LNA), told the Libya Herald that two boom-mobiles had went kaboom! in Tobruk on a busy road near the town's petroleum institute. He said at least two soldiers had been killed in the blast. Hejazi could not give information on the number of civilian casualties which are expected to be much higher.

The kabooms seem to have been caused in Tobruk by two remotely detonated boom-mobiles and were not carried out by a jacket wallah, although the specific details remain unclear as new information continues to emerge, Hejazi said.

In Beida at least three soldiers were killed and 12 injured, some critically, after another boom-mobile went kaboom! at the south gate of the town's Labraq airbase, 30 kilometres from Beida. Hejazi said in this case a suicide bomber had caused the blast.

Telecommunications to Tobruk seem to have been disrupted in the aftermath of the attack. Attempts by the Libya Herald to reach residents in the town were unsuccessful.

Female Suicide Bomber Hits College In Nigeria's Niger State
[Ynet] A female jacket wallah blew herself up on Wednesday at a college in Kontagora in Nigeria's central Niger State, close to the capital Abuja, a police front man said.

The bomb went off as the woman was trying to enter the college's library, a witness said.
An Nahar adds:
At Least 10 Feared Dead after Blast at Nigerian Teaching College

At least 10 people were feared dead on Wednesday after an suspected suicide kaboom rocked a teacher training college in northwest Nigeria as students were sitting exams, police and a student said.

The blast happened at the Federal College of Education in the town of Kontagora, Niger state, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) from the state capital, Minna.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the kaboom happened just two days after nearly 50 students were killed in a suspected Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
suicide kaboom at a school in the northeastern state of Yobe.

That massacre was one of the worst in the five-year insurgency against a school teaching a secular curriculum, to which the Islamists are opposed.

Niger State police front man Ibrahim Gambari confirmed the blast by telephone from Minna, saying commanders were awaiting further details from officers on the ground.

"We have dispatched our teams from here," he told AFP.

Student Mary Okafor said the blast happened as they were sitting end of semester exams and saw everyone rush out of class.

"We saw bodies on the ground between the library and the female hostel. Among the bodies were two dismembered women who we believe were the bombers," she added.

"At least 10 students were killed and several others injured," said Okafor.

"They have all been moved to the general hospital. We have all been asked to vacate the school. The authorities in the town have asked all schools to close."

There was no official confirmation of the corpse count, or of whether it was a suicide kaboom.

Educational establishments in northern Nigeria have been hit several times by bombings in recent months.

On September 18, at least 13 were killed in Kano during a shoot-out between police and suspected jacket wallahs, again at a teacher training college.

A female suicide bomber killed six on July 30 when she detonated her explosives at a noticeboard on the campus of the Kano Polytechnic College while students were crowded around it.

The attack was the fourth by a female bomber in the city in a week and prompted the authorities to cancel public celebrations marking the end of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan.

The bombings were linked to Boko Haram, which is opposed to so-called "Western education" and wants to create a hardline Islamic state in Nigeria's Moslem-majority north.

Kenyan Police Arrest 10 Suspected Attackers from Somalia
[AnNahar] Kenyan police said Wednesday they had tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
10 suspected attackers, including two female jacket wallahs, who had crossed into the country from war-torn Somalia.

"These 10 suspects were involved in recent terror attacks in Nairobi before they fled to Somalia, and now they have sneaked back," police spokeswoman Gatiria Mboroki told news hounds.

She did not reveal the nationalities of those arrested or provide any other details.

Kenya has been hit by a string of attacks in recent months blamed on Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab Lion of Islams.

The Shabaab claimed they carried out the September 2013 attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall killing at least 67 people.

The Islamists said the attack was a warning to Kenya to pull its troops out of southern Somalia, where they are fighting the holy warriors as part of an African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
force.

Ahmed Abdi Godane, the Shabaab chief who vowed to bring "rivers of blood" to Kenya, was killed in a U.S. air strike in October.

'Dozens Dead' as Suicide Car Bomber Hits Yemen Shiites
[AnNahar] A powerful suicide kaboom on Shiite militia fighters in central Yemen left dozens of people dead on Wednesday, military and tribal sources said.

Yemen has been rocked by fresh instability since the Shiite fighters, known as Huthis, seized control of the capital Sanaa in September.

The Huthis have since been expanding their presence throughout the Arabian Peninsula nation but are facing fierce resistance from local Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda's powerful Yemeni branch.

Wednesday's blast hit a large gathering of Huthis at the residence of a local tribal chief in Rada, a mixed Shiite-Sunni town that has seen heavy fighting, military and tribal sources said.

The kaboom was the heaviest to hit Rada since the Huthis took over parts of the town last month, the military source said, adding that it was carried out by a suicide boom-mobileer.

Residents said the dawn bombing was felt across the whole town.

Both the military and tribal sources said dozens were killed, but a more accurate toll was not immediately available.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

At least 26 more Huthis were killed in attacks that targeted them in several areas around Rada since early Tuesday, tribal sources said, giving a toll that AFP could not immediately confirm.

Al-Qaeda claimed twin attacks at the weekend that it said killed dozens of Huthi fighters in Rada.

The rise of the Huthis has challenged the authority of President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, an ally of the United States, and violence has continued despite U.N.-backed efforts to find a political solution.

The instability in Yemen, which lies next to key shipping routes from the Suez Canal to the Gulf, stems from the 2012 overthrow of longtime strongman President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, who has been accused of backing the Huthis.

Saleh is a member of the Zaidi sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which the Huthis belong.

Washington on Monday hit Saleh and two Huthi commanders with sanctions, accusing them of "engaging in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security, or stability of Yemen."

The U.N. Security Council previously approved sanctions against the three men.

A new cabinet, including members considered close to the Huthis, was sworn in Sunday in a bid to resolve Yemen's political crisis, despite calls for a boycott from both Saleh and the Shiite militia.

But authorities have made no move to tackle the militia in Sanaa or to impose order in other parts of the country.

Yemen is an important U.S. ally in the fight against Al-Qaeda. The group's Yemeni branch is considered one of its deadliest and has organized attacks against Western targets.

A suspected U.S. drone strike killed seven Al-Qaeda gunnies in Yemen's south Wednesday, the defence ministry and tribal sources said, the latest in a series of raids against the holy warrior network.

The gunnies were hit while gathered "under a group of trees" in Azzan village in the southern province of Shabwa, a tribal source said.

The defense ministry said in a brief statement on its website that seven Al-Qaeda gunnies were killed in an air raid Wednesday in Azzan.

"Those killed were planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Azzan using a bomb-laden vehicle," it said, without confirming the strike was carried out by a U.S. drone.

Drone strikes against Al-Qaeda suspects in Yemen have intensified this month, with at least 20 gunnies killed in raids by unmanned aircraft in the central province of Baida on November 3.

The United States is the only country operating drones over Yemen, but U.S. officials rarely confirm individual strikes.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

(AQAP) has announced the deaths of two top commanders, Shawki al-Baadani and Nabil al-Dahab, in such raids.

fighters trying to expand their control and Sunni tribes allied with al Qaeda, residents said on Wednesday.

Separately, a U.S. drone killed seven suspected al Qaeda Lions of Islam in southern Yemen while they were on their way to carry out an attack, Yemeni military sources said.

The expansion of the Houthis, who hail mainly from northern Yemen, has unsettled Sunni tribes in central al-Bayda province, threatening to provoke sectarian conflict.

Residents reported intense fighting in the Qifa area, home to powerful al-Bayda Sunni tribes who joined hands with the local al Qaeda wing, Ansar al-Sharia

, to halt the Houthi advance.

In the city of Radda in the same province, which fell to the Houthis earlier this month, a boom-mobile apparently targeting a local tribal leader allied with the Houthis was blown up safely before it reached its intended destination, residents said.

They said the vehicle was halted by a security barrier erected some distance from the home of Sheikh Mohammed Muqbel al-Aywei and his followers blew it up without casualties.

A major part of the south steppes of modern Ukraine at a certain period of time belonged to the Turkic peoples, most of whom were Muslims since the fall of the Khazar Khanate.

The Crimean Tatars are the only indigenous Muslim ethnic group in the country. The Nogays, another Muslim group who lived in the steppes of southern Ukraine, emigrated to Turkey in the 18th-19th century. In addition, there are Muslim communities in all major Ukrainian cities representing Soviet-era migrants from Muslim backgrounds. There are approximately 150 mosques in Ukraine. Many Muslim mosques use the Crimean Tatarian, Arabic, Azeri, Tatarian and Russian languages.

Video shows Turkish mob attacking U.S. Navy sailors
[FOXNEWS] A shocking video appears to show radical Turkish nationalists roughing up a trio of U.S. Navy servicemen in Istanbul on Wednesday, pulling bags over their heads and shouting, "Yankees go home!"

In the video, which was quickly posted on YouTube, a group of roughly 20 men carrying a banner with Turkish founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's face on it pelt the sailors with garbage and paint before surrounding them and pulling bags over their heads.

"Because we define you as murderers, as killers, we want you to get out of our land," one of the assailants is heard saying. "Damn America!"

A statement from the Navy said the attackers claimed to be from the Turkish Youth Union, which reports said characterized as a leftist, ultra-nationalist group that opposes Turkish membership in NATO. The U.S. Embassy in Ankara condemned the "appalling" attack, which took place in the historic Eminonu neighborhood of Istanbul.
An Nahar provides a slightly different perspective on the events:
U.S. Sailors Hit by 'Hood Attack' in Turkey, 12 Locals Arrested

A group of nationalist Turkish youths on Wednesday attacked three visiting U.S. sailors in Istanbul, trying to force sacks on their heads in an assault angrily condemned by the U.S. embassy.

Several dozen members of the nationalist youth group Turkiye Genclik Birligi (Turkish Youth Union/TGB) attacked the sailors in the Eminonu district on the Istanbul waterfront, a popular tourist hub.

They sought to force white sacks onto the heads of the sailors, who were in civilian dress, and chased them across the quayside, shouting "Yankee Go Home" and "Down with U.S. Imperialism".

The use of hoods was a reference to an incident from the 2003 Iraq war that outraged many in Turkey when U.S. forces in northern Iraq jugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a group of Turkish soldiers, forced hoods on their heads and held them for three days.

The incident inflamed nationalist sentiment in Turkey and formed the basis of the smash-hit 2006 film about Turkish agents in Iraq "Valley of the Wolves: Iraq"..

"We want you to get lost and we are using our right to protest," the group said it told the sailors.

According to NTV television, 12 people were subsequently arrested.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the U.S. embassy in Ankara described the footage of the incident, which was posted on social networks, as "appalling".

"While we respect the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, we condemn today's attack in Istanbul," it said, adding it had "no doubt the vast majority of Turks would join us in rejecting an action that so disrespects Turkey's reputation for hospitality."

Turkey's refusal to cooperate with the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 caused a full-blown crisis in relations between Washington and Ankara.

But tensions has re-emerged again in recent months over Turkey's wariness of offering full support to the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State

group in the flashpoint Syrian town of Kobani on Wednesday cut off a key supply route used by the jihadists, a monitoring group said.

"The (Syrian Kurdish) People's Protection Units (YPG) targeted IS positions behind the (strategic) Mashta al-Nur hill and cut off the Halanj-Ain al-Arab road south of the town," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, using the Arabic name Ain al-Arab for Kobani.

It said 16 IS members were killed in the advance.

The YPG has been fighting the IS since mid-September in Kobani. The Syrian Kurds are backed by Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters and Syrian rebels.

Kobani has become a major symbol of resistance against the IS, which in recent months has seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

A US-led coalition on September 23 launched air strikes against IS positions in Syria, including around Kobani.

On Wednesday, the Observatory said at least 865 people, 746 of them IS fighters, have been killed in the strikes. Another 50 were civilians, including eight children, while 68 of those killed were members of Syria's al-Qaeda affiliate.

#8  They have provided dozens of truck loads of weapons and ammunition to ISIS per the Kurds.

I suspect that a lot of that was shipped out of Benghazi and Dern to Turkey. Egypt has traditionally had a strong influence in the former. The Muslim Brotherhood provided a lot of support for the Libyan rebels and likely were backing the Syrian Islamists before being overthrown. The Turks were/are no slouches in Benghazi either.

IS has a foothold in the latter city.

Other sources of weaponry are defectors from the other Syrian rebel groups. It also wouldn't be surprising if shipments are coming out of the Balkans to Turkey as well.

U.S. War against IS Steadily Escalates, Raising Stakes
[AnNahar] U.S. military action against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists in Iraq and Syria began on a small scale three months ago but has steadily expanded in size and scope, raising the stakes for Washington, experts say.

The mission has morphed from protecting religious minorities in Iraq to a vow to "destroy" the IS group in both Syria and Iraq, a dramatic shift for an American president who as a candidate was an outspoken opponent of the previous U.S. war in Iraq.

"As commander in chief, I will not allow the United States to be dragged into another war in Iraq," President Barack Obama
If I had a son he'd look like Trayvon...
said on August 7, when he announced the first U.S. air strikes against the IS group in Iraq.

But last week, Obama approved reinforcements that will bring the total military footprint to 3,100 troops in Iraq, with a new mission to shape the government army into an effective fighting force.

The justification for the initial U.S. bombing raids in August was narrowly defined -- to protect U.S. diplomats in northern Arbil and to prevent a massacre of besieged Yazidis on Mount Sinjar.

The United States had no intention of "being the Iraqi air force," Obama said at the time.

"But that's explicitly what the United States is now," said Micah Zenko of the Council on Foreign Relations.

"Mission sets expand, costs go up," he told Agence La Belle France Presse.

After more than 800 air strikes, there is no end in sight and U.S. officials say the fight could last years.

The step-by-step expansion of the war effort is a familiar pattern for American presidents, and Congress tends to give the commander-in-chief a green light, Zenko said.

"Every administration does this. It's not unique to this White House," he said.

- Risk of casualties --

The American military advisers are not in a "combat role" but some of them will be based in the frontline province of Anbar in the country's west, a bastion for the IS group.

The deployment raises the risk of potential American causalities if the IS group overruns an Iraqi air base there or if it manages to down an American helicopter with a shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile, though U.S. officers insist those are remote scenarios.

The biggest risk of the expanding campaign is the notorious "slippery slope," with Washington increasingly pulled into the multi-sided civil war in Syria and pressure mounting to employ more military power to turn the tide, experts say.

Obama has pledged not to send ground forces into combat but some Republican politicians already have urged him to order in forward air controllers to direct air strikes by coalition warplanes, a proposal favored by some top brass.

- Reliving the Iraq war -

The U.S. military recommended more advisers as it has pinned its hopes on nine brigades in the Iraqi army, which are deemed good enough to be trained for an eventual counter-attack.

The strategy resembles the effort undertaken during the American occupation of 2003-2011, when advisers worked with Iraqi units and Sunni tribes to fight al-Qaeda holy warriors, said Robert Scales, a retired U.S. Army major general.

But as the Iraqi forces train, the IS jihadists will have time to strengthen their hold on territory, stockpile weapons and recruit more young fighters, Scales wrote in the Washington Post.

"If nine Iraqi brigades with their U.S. advisers can't do it next year, the clock will keep ticking. And Obama will have two options: Accept an Islamic State 'caliphate' that occupies much of Iraq and Syria or add more U.S. forces to the opposition," Scales wrote.

Daniel Bolger, a retired lieutenant general who led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, warned Wednesday the United States runs the risk of repeating the mistakes of "two failed wars" in Iraq and Afghanistan by relying on military action to solve political problems.

In a New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
commentary, Bolger argued the military's experience in Iraq has been misunderstood in Washington and that the 2007 troop surge was not the success it has been portrayed as.

"The surge in Iraq did not 'win' anything. It bought time," he wrote of the reinforcements sent to salvage the war.

"But in the end, shackled to a corrupt, sectarian government in Baghdad and hobbled by our fellow Americans' unwillingness to commit to a fight lasting decades, the surge just forestalled today's stalemate," he said.

Now the United States faces the same bandidos gunnies it fought for eight years, and calls by hawks for larger-scale military action amounted to "insanity," said Bolger, author of "Why We Lost."

"If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, I think we're there."

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) bully boyz use to resupply their forces in a Syrian town on the Turkish border, a town official and a monitoring group said on Wednesday, the first major gain against the bully boyz after weeks of violence.

Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga forces crossed into Kobane on Oct. 31 to help the besieged Kurdish YPG and YPJ fighters in the town. The combined forces have now cut off the road which leads south east to the village of Hilnij, the sources said.

Despite having limited strategic significance, the battle in Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab, has become a powerful symbol in the fight against ISIS. The hardline Sunni Moslem group has captured large expanses of Iraq and Syria and declared an Islamic "caliphate."

Idris Nassan, a local official in Kobane, said by telephone that anti-ISIS forces had taken the strategic hill of Mistanour and the road which runs along the side of the hill.

"ISIS was using this road for ammunition and fighters," he said.

He added that Peshmerga forces had been focusing artillery strikes on ISIS positions on the outskirts of Kobane like Mistanour over the past week, to halt ISIS shelling on the town.

Rooters was unable to reach ISIS fighters in Kobane. The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Kurdish forces had not taken Mistanour hill but had started fighting on the road to Hilnij, preventing ISIS fighters from using it to resupply.

#2  I call BS on that one. She married a Somali tribal chief, so I don't believe she'd go off to the Ukraine.

Sounds like a smear by Putin.

#1  “When I’m out speaking, I never mention the bin Laden mission,”

.....No need of mention, it's contained in my CV and the event programme. I let the audience pull the trigger.

Other SEALs have challenged O’Neill’s version of events and blasted him for bragging about the mission in violation of the elite force’s code of secrecy.

.....That would be our frequently violated 'code of secrecy' if you will.
