Afghanistan
Afghan Forces Launch Operation in Areas Bordering Pakistan
[AnNahar] Afghan cops have launched an operation against forces of Evil in an eastern province seen as a rear base for the Pak Taliban which carried out a school massacre last week, officials said Monday.

The Mighty Pak Army chief met Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
in Kabul in the aftermath of the school attack in the Pak city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
which killed 149 people, mainly children.

The army chief sought Ghani's support in defeating the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP).

TTP leader Mullah Fazlullah
...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...
is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan's Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
, which borders Pakistain's restive tribal areas.

Kunar has been the scene of fierce fighting between local forces and the Afghan Taliban for the past 10 days.

"Afghan cops have launched a joint anti-militant operations in several parts of Dangam district of Kunar province," Dawlat Waziri, deputy defense ministry front man, told AFP.

"So far in the operation, 21 armed bandidos bad boys have been killed and 33 others maimed," Waziri said, adding that seven security personnel were maimed.

Kunar governor Shujaul Mulk Jalala said more than 1,500 Afghan Taliban fighters attacked remote villages in Dangam.

Jalala said Pak Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
forces of Evil were also battling Afghan cops in Dangam.

Pakistain has repeatedly asked Afghanistan to capture and hand over Fazlullah.

Each nation has long accused the other of allowing forces of Evil to shelter in the border region and launch bloody attacks that threaten regional stability.

The Afghan Taliban have stepped up their attacks as NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
wraps up its combat operations, which end on December 31.

A follow-up mission of about 12,500 U.S.-led NATO troops will stay on to train and support Afghan cops.

Africa Horn
Attack on AU Somalia Base,  4  14 Injured
[AnNahar] Three African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
soldiers and a civilian were maimed Thursday after the Shabaab staged a brazen attack on the heavily-fortified headquarters of the force in Somalia.
Times of India sets the corpse count at 14.
The headquarters, located within the high-security compound of Mogadishu airport which also houses several embassies, was successfully repulsed, the AU force known as AMISOM said.

At least one Shabaab fighter, and possibly several others, was said to have been killed after penetrating the compound, the force said.

The African Union (AU) force said on its Twitter feed Thursday afternoon that "the situation is completely under control."

Paddy Ankunda, the Ugandan front man for AMISOM, whose contingent is in charge of the attacked base, confirmed to AFP that there is "no more fighting."

Ankunda said the assailants "sneaked into the base camp near the airport... but our troops foiled the attack." He later added on Twitter that the "attackers sneaked in incognito."

Somali police official Abdi Ahmed said strong kabooms resonated at the rear entrance to the Halam base, where exchanges of gunfire were also heard.

Shabaab quickly grabbed credit.

"Our fighters are inside the headquarters of the foreign troops in Somalia," Shabaab front man Abdulaziz Abu Musab told AFP, adding several AU soldiers had been killed.

Ankunda denied the claim, saying the intruders had suffered losses.

"The Shabaab attacked us today but we managed to repulse the attackers. One of them was killed inside the base camp," Ankunda said.

An AFP photographer initially heard gunfire coming from the inside the base, and later reported firing in the area had halted.

A Western security source said between 15 and 20 attackers were involved.

By mid-afternoon, officials said the Shabaab attackers had stormed the base and maimed three AU soldiers, while suffering at least one casualty in their ranks.

But their evident success in managing to penetrate the highly-guarded compound was in itself a troubling achievement.

The AU force headquarters is a fortified structure located on the grounds of the Mogadishu airport, which has also been placed under high security.

There are currently some 22,000 African Union troops as part of the AMISOM force, deployed since 2007.

They have managed to push Shabaab hard boyz out of the capital, but the Islamists still hold large swathes of territory.

Recent Shabaab attacks in Somalia have targeted key government and security sites in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities and African Union troops that they are winning the war.

Thursday's attack came a day after Somalia's parliament endorsed a new prime minister, appointed last week after the war-torn country's president fell out with the previous premier amid bitter infighting.

The United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
, United States and European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
-- all key backers of Somalia's fragile government -- have all warned that power struggles in Mogadishu were a damaging distraction for the country as it tries to battle Shabaab rebels.

a year ago for writing an article about the Prophet Mohammad and the caste system, an extremely sensitive subject in a West African country with deep social and racial divisions.

He claims his article has been misinterpreted.

The prosecution asked for the death penalty to be carried out in accordance with Islamic sharia law and recommended he be shot. Mauritania, a poor country straddling Arab and black Africa, last applied the death penalty in 1987.

Separately, a court in the southern town of Rosso began proceedings on Wednesday against anti-slavery campaigner Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeiday and six members of his organization for "inciting violence, disrupting public order, contempt for authorities and membership of a non-recognized organization".

Biram Ould Abeid, a former presidential candidate, was arrested last month during a peaceful march. He could face a prison sentence of up to five years.

Human rights campaigners and the European Parliament have called for his release.

Mauritania became the last country worldwide to legally abolish slavery in 1981 and still has the highest prevalence worldwide of slavery per head of population, according to the Global Slavery Index 2013.

Egypt: Bomb Kills 2 in Army Vehicle in Sinai Peninsula
[NY Times] A roadside kaboom struck an army vehicle late Thursday, killing an officer and a soldier in the Sinai Peninsula, security officials said. The attack occurred south of the town of El-Arish, the scene of frequent attacks by gunnies on the security forces. Another soldier was maimed in the blast, officials said. Egypt's military has been battling an insurgency on the peninsula since it ousted President Mohammed Morsi last year and cracked down on his supporters. Militant groups claim their attacks are in retaliation for the government crackdown, which has left hundreds dead and thousands tossed in the slammer

19 Libya Troops Slain after Speedboat Attack on Oil Ports
[AnNahar] Islamists killed at least 19 soldiers Thursday after a surprise attack in which they used speedboats in a failed bid to seize some of Libya's main oil terminals, officials said.

The gunnies belonging to the Fajr Libya, or Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). , launched the attack on the port of al-Sidra by firing rockets from speedboats, setting an oil tank on fire, security sources said.

Soldiers damaged three of the vessels before festivities in which at least 19 of them were killed, they said, adding the murderous Moslems were eventually repelled.

"These speedboats had fired several rockets at the terminals of Ras Lanuf and al-Sidra and one of them hit a tank south of al-Sidra port which then caught fire," said Ali al-Hassi, security front man for the region.

Witnesses said the attack was launched overnight, and reported seeing smoke from the burning oil tank.

A military source said 19 soldiers were killed in the region, and that the oil tank struck by a rocket was still burning in the Al-Sidra oil terminal.

Al-Sidra is located in the region known as the "oil crescent" that has been the scene of recent fighting between government forces and Fajr Libya.

Since the festivities erupted on December 13, oil production in the country has dropped to nearly 350,000 barrels per day compared with 800,000 previously, according to industry experts

A medical source at Ibn Sina hospital in Sirte said the facility received 18 bodies from the fighting.

"The armed forces on Thursday repelled an attack in which the Fajr Libya militia tried to seize the al-Sidra oil terminal," said Hassi, adding that it was during this attack that the 19th soldier died.

The number of casualties among the Islamist murderous Moslems was unknown.

While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Saudi Arabia beheads 12th Pakistani in two months for heroin smuggling

Shiite Militia Abduct Senior Yemen Intelligence Official
[AnNahar] A senior Yemeni intelligence official was kidnapped in Sanaa on Thursday by Shiite fighters from the Huthi militia in control of the capital since a September offensive, security sources said.

"General Yahia al-Marrani... was kidnapped this morning by armed Huthis from his home in Sanaa," a source told AFP.

Another source said that about 20 Huthis had stormed Marrani's residence and taken him to an unknown location.

The kidnapping was confirmed to AFP by a relative of the officer, who had served for five years as head of the police intelligence unit in Saada province, a Huthi stronghold in north Yemen.

He was named as a director in Yemen's intelligence services by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, who took power following a 2012 uprising that unseated longtime ruler President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
Yemen has been rocked by instability since the Shiite fighters, who are also known as Ansarullah, seized control of Sanaa on September 21.

The Huthis have since expanded their presence in central and western Yemen, but have met fierce resistance from Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda Death Eaters.

Fresh festivities erupted overnight around the central city of Rada, which has been the scene of heavy fighting for several weeks.

A tribal source told AFP that 18 Huthi fighters and seven rustics were killed in violence that continued sporadically into Thursday in the villages of Qaifah, Khobzah and Massameh.

A further 12 Shiite gunnies were killed in the previous 24 hours in festivities with Al-Qaeda gunnies near Rada, according to a tribal source.

And in neighboring Ibb province, Huthi gunnies stormed a Sunni religious school on Wednesday evening and "kidnapped several students," a local official told AFP.

Arsonist sets fire to Swedish mosque, injuring five
[Ynet] An arsonist set fire to a mosque in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna on Thursday, injuring five people, police said, an incident which comes amid an intense debate over immigration.

Between 15 and 20 people were in the mosque, located in the ground floor of a building in a mainly residential area, when the fire erupted. Local media footage showed smoke and flames billowing from the windows.

"A witness saw somebody throw an object through the window of the building, which serves as a mosque, after which a violent fire began," police front man Lars Franzell said.

India-Pakistan
Arrest warrant issued against Lal Masjid cleric
[TIMESOFINDIA.INDIATIMES] A Pak court on Friday issued arrest warrant against hard boy holy man Maulana Abdul Aziz

for threatening activists protesting outside his Lal Masjid
...literally the Red Mosque, located in Islamabad and frequented by all sorts of high govt officials. The proprietors, Ghazi Abdul Rasheed and Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi, unleashed their Islamic storm troopers on the city, shutting down whorehouses and beating people up who weren't devout enough. The Musharraf govt put an end to the nonsense by besieging the place. Abdul Aziz Ghazi was nabbed while he was trying to escape dressed up like a girl. BBC reported that the corpse count at 173, but other claims, usually hysterical, say there were up to 1000 titzup. Among their number was Abdul Rashid Ghazi. Everyone then said tut-tut and what a nice guy he had been...

The activists were protesting the holy man's pro-Taliban stance in the wake of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

massacre at a sit-in outside the mosque last week.

The mosque came into prominence in 2007 when Mighty Pak Army commandos stormed it for challenging the state's writ. while trying to escape from the mosque wearing a face veil and paraded on national TV in the same attire. He was released on bail in 2009.

On Friday, civil judge Saqib Jawad issued the warrant against the holy man after hearing a petition of the activists, who protested outside the mosque throughout last week.

The holy man had refused to call the terror victims deaders and described the attack a "reaction" to the ongoing anti-Taliban operations.

Aziz's front man, Hafiz Ehtisham, said his followers would resist his arrest. "Before arresting Maulana Aziz, (Prime Minister) Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...

should be arrested,'' he said. "Maulana Aziz has decided not to handover himself to police.''

Activist Jibran Nasir, who organized last week's protests, warned of a "new plan" if the holy man was not arrested on Friday.

"We demand from police that sections of Anti-terrorism Act should be included in the First Information Report (FIR) and if the holy man is not arrested by 5pm on Friday, we will announce our next line of action.''

Aziz had last week warned of backlash in the event of executions of convicted terrorists.

Officials identified the slain terrorist as Saddam and added he was killed in a shootout with armed forces in Khyber tribal area bordering Peshawar on Thursday night.

"Commander Saddam was a dreaded terrorist, who was killed in an exchange of fire with the security forces in Jamrud town of Khyber tribal region," local official Shahab Ali Shah told journalists in Peshawar.

"Six of his accomplices were maimed and arrested." He added that Saddam is believed to have facilitated the school attack, although the extent or capacity of his alleged involvement was not yet known.

"Authorities are currently interrogating the injured terrorists," Shah said.

He described Saddam as an important commander in the Pak Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), and said he had criminal masterminded several kabooms.

Saddam and his accomplices had been involved in several recent attacks on security forces that had resulted in heavy casualties, Shah said.

Many Taliban fighters had fled to Khyber from North Wazoo after the Mighty Pak Army launched an operation against them in June 2014.

#2  how many of the Sukhoi pilot are actually Iraqi ?

Probably a good percentage. They've had a few months to get their crews up to speed.

I wouldn't discount Farsi and Slavic language speakers being among the rest, though.

Pre-teen seriously hurt in West Bank firebombing
[IsraelTimes] An 11-year-old girl was maimed in a firekaboom in the West Bank Thursday evening, Israeli military and medical officials said.

The girl and her father were driving home near a West Bank settlement in the northern West Bank when their car was struck by a Molotov cocktail.

The girl suffered third degree burns over the majority of her body and face and was put on a respirator, paramedics said. The father suffered minor burns to his limbs. Doctors said the girl suffered very serious burns and that her injuries were life-threatening.

The father reportedly rescued his daughter from the burning vehicle and carried her over a kilometer to the nearest town to call for help, Channel 2 reported.

According to the IDF, the attack occurred on Route 55 outside the Maale Shomron settlement at about 6:30 p.m.

Their vehicle was completely consumed by flames, Ynet reported.

The IDF was searching the area for suspects.
An Nahar adds some specifics:
An Israeli man and his 11-year-old daughter were maimed Thursday when assailants threw a Molotov cocktail at their vehicle in the northern West Bank, the army said.

A military spokeswoman told AFP the assailants, believed to be Paleostinians, threw a Molotov cocktail at the car near the Maale Shomron settlement.

Firekabooms by Paleostinians against Israeli civilians and military targets are not rare in the West Bank.

According to the military, in the first nine days of December Paleostinians carried out 24 Molotov cocktail attacks, five of them targeting civilian Israeli cars.

Dozens of IS Jihadists Killed Fighting Syria Kurds
[AnNahar] At least 44 members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group were killed in festivities with Kurdish forces in Syria on Thursday, a monitoring group said.

Thirty of the jihadists were killed fighting against members of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in the village of Qassiab in Hasakeh province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The YPG regained control of the village, two days after it was seized by the jihadists, said the Britannia-based group, which has a wide network of activists on the ground in Syria.

Three Kurdish fighters were also killed in the festivities, it added.

Another 14 jihadists and an YPG fighter were killed fighting in the flashpoint town Kobane in northern Syria, said the Observatory.

Fighting over Kobane began in mid-September, when the IS launched a bid to take it over.

A U.S.-led coalition has been launching air strikes against IS positions in Syria since September 23 and the YPG have also received backing from Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga and from some Syrian rebel groups.

On Wednesday, the coalition launched eight strikes against IS positions in Kobane, which is known as Ain al-Arab in Arabic.

Elsewhere, Syrian air force raids killed at least 21 people, including several children, in the IS-held areas of Al-Bab and Qbasin in the northern province of Aleppo, said the Observatory.

The regime air force has killed thousands of people, mostly civilians living in areas out of government control, since it was first deployed in the country's war in July 2012.

Since Tuesday alone, at least 89 civilians including 19 children have been killed in more than 400 government air strikes across Syria, the Observatory said.

The UN and international rights groups have repeatedly called on the government to refrain from using its air force against inhabited areas.

Nearly four years of civil war ravaging the country have killed an estimated 200,000 people and also displaced half of the population.
