#3  Rasmussen: Presidential Approval Index rating of -20. Overall, 42% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's performance. That’s the lowest level of approval yet recorded for this president. Fifty-seven percent (57%) now disapprove. Those are the lowest ratings yet recorded for this president. The president’s approval rating has held steady in the 46% - 47% range for six months and it remains to be seen whether this new low is merely statistical noise or the start of a lasting change.

Yank, the Army Weekly was a weekly magazine published by the United States military during World War II. Founded and edited by Major Hartzell Spence (1908-2001), the magazine was written by enlisted rank soldiers only and was made available to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen serving overseas. It was published at facilities around the world—British, Mediterranean, Continental, and Western Pacific—for a total of 21 editions in 17 countries. Yank was the most widely read magazine in the history of the U.S. military, achieving a worldwide circulation of more than 2.6 million. Each issue was priced from five cents to 10 cents because it was felt that if soldiers paid, they would have a higher regard for the publication. Each issue was edited in New York City and then shipped for printing around the world where staff editors added local stories. The last issue was published in December 1945. Scott Corbett (later known as a writer of novels for children) served as the last editor.

Spence not only insisted on the inclusion of the pinup in every issue of Yank, he is credited by the Oxford English Dictionary with the first use of the word as a noun.

Sketch artists such as Robert Greenhalgh and Howard Brodie worked on the magazine which also featured the "G.I. Joe" cartoons by Dave Breger and the Sad Sack cartoons by Sgt. George Baker. Noted artist and author Jack Coggins spent over two years with Yank, first in New York, then in London; during his time with Yank he produced illustrations and articles featured in more than 24 issues.

Afghan, ISAF Forces Conduct Operation Against Major Insurgent Cell in Shah Wali Kot
Afghan National Security Forces with ISAF partners successfully conducted a large scale operation against Taliban insurgents in the district of Shah Wali Kot, north of Kandahar City recently. The intent of this operation was to disrupt a key insurgent haven from which attacks against Afghan communities and coalition forces were planned and executed.

Directly contributing to the ongoing efforts of Hamkari security operations in Kandahar City and nearby districts, the five-day operation saw heavy fighting with one period of non-stop, close-quarter combat lasting the entire day and resulting in the death of a significant number of insurgents. Through this operation, the combined force dealt a major blow to more than 100 insurgents and their commanders.

Twelve Suspected Militants Released
[Quqnoos] At least, 12 individuals suspected in having connection with the insurgents were released on Saturday from a foreign forces's prison

Works on the cases of another 25 suspected individuals are in progress, a member in a commission set to review the cases of suspected insurgents said.

However the fact that the commission for the review of suspected militants' cases is formed recently, a member in the commission informed that 12 prisoners who were detained in a foreign troops' prison in Kabul, the Afghan Capital, were released.

"If the prisoner has a cureless illness, or is too old, the commission has the right to make a suggestion to the president for his release," said Deputy Attorney General, Fazel Ahmad Faqir Yar.

The remarks come as earlier the UN special envoy to Afghanistan underscored that the review of the prisoners' cases require transparency.

"Of course this needs to be done with open criteria, so that if and when this takes place and we hope it would be taking place soon," said the top UN special representative to Afghanistan, Stefan de Mistura.

"The criteria applied will also be utilized for those detained without legal bases, who are not necessarily politically connected," he said.

Members in the commission for the review of prisoners' cases of suspected insurgents include representatives from Afghan Justice Ministry, High Court, Attorney General Department, and President's Office.

Fourteen killed in Afghan violence
Bombings and shootings have killed at least 14 people in different parts of Afghanistan amid escalating violence in the war-ravaged country.

Six civilians died in two bomb attacks in southern and western Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, five Afghan police officers were killed when the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in eastern Ghazni Province.

Elsewhere in the country, a car bomb explosion killed a district chief, his son and a bodyguard in the southern city of Kandahar.

Violence has been on the rise across Afghanistan, as US-led foreign troops are preparing to launch a large scale offensive against the Taliban in the southern province of Kandahar.

Despite the presence of nearly 130,000 US-led soldiers in the country, civilians continue to pay the price for the 2001 invasion that aimed to dismantle the Taliban.

The US-led invasion was launched with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the war-ravaged country. Nine years on, however, Afghanistan remains unstable and civilians continue to pay the price.

Guerrero: Mexican Army Bags 14 Bad Guys
Babelfish with a hat tip to Nota Roja
Elements of the Mexican Army 9th Military Region killed 14 unidentified armed suspects in a shootout in the southern Mexican state of Guerreo Tuesday, say Mexican news accounts.

The 27th Infantry Battalion was attacked from the interior of a residence from on Calle Moisés Carbajal in the Bermeja district of Texco at about 1130 hrs in the morning. The military requested the surrender of the attackers but were rebuffed. Reports are the gunfight lasted about 40 minutes. The Mexican Army reported no losses in the gunfight.

Following the gunfight, the army seized 13 rifles and five pistols from the residence and a vehicle.

Taxco is the same place where 53 corpses of murdered individuals were found earlier this month in an abandoned mine. Guerrero is turf to the rival Belträn Leyva and La Familia criminal gangs. The military is not certain which gang the dead belonged to.
Probably don't care, either.

The Grand Turk
Bomb blast kills one Turkish soldier
A bomb explosion has killed at least one Turkish soldier and wounded three others in southeastern parts of the country close to the Iraqi frontier.

According to a Turkish security official, the blast took place close to a unit of border guards near Uludere town in Sirnak province on Tuesday.

The improvised bomb was triggered by one of the soldiers, said the official who was speaking on condition of anonymity, AFP reported.

Officials have blamed militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for the Tuesday incident.

The Turkish government says about 2,000 PKK militants are hiding in Iraq's mountainous north, from where they launch attacks on the Turkish territory.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community, including Turkey, Iran, the United States and European Union member states.

More than 40,000 people have lost their lives since the militant group launched its armed campaign against Ankara in 1984, as part of a quest to establish an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey.

Seven more killed as 'sectarian killings' continue in Karachi
[Dawn] At least seven people were killed in Karachi in incidents of target killings during the past 24 hours, taking the toll of sectarian killings in the first two weeks of June to 15, DawnNews reported.

An elderly man and an activist of a religious outfit were shot dead in different parts of the city on Monday.

On Monday morning, an elderly man was forced to stop his car under the Nazimabad flyover before being shot dead by armed motorcyclists, police and witnesses said.

Syed Ayub Naqvi, 68, who was known among his peers for his literary contributions, was targeted near the main Petrol Pump bus stop while he was driving to an Imambargah in Nazimabad No 3.

"Mr Naqvi was heading to Imambargah Noor-i-Iman when his car was intercepted by two armed motorcyclists under the Nazimabad flyover," said Sub-Inspector Jehanzeb, the SHO of the Nazimabad police station.

"The riders forced him to apply brakes. As soon as he stopped, one of the riders got off the motorbike carrying a 9mm pistol and fired multiple shots at the elderly man, who died on the spot."

The attackers escaped from the crime-scene, leaving him in a pool of blood, the policeman said.

The body was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Doctors said the victim had suffered two bullet wounds in the head.

Mr Naqvi was a resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and father of two. Apart from being the author of a few books, he had several translations to his credit. He also set up a bookstall in the Imambargah every Friday, his aides said.

In the evening, a large number of people attended the victim's funeral prayers offered at Imambargah Rizvia in Nazimabad. They chanted slogans against terrorism and sectarianism and also criticised the government for its failure to put an end to the wave of sectarian killings in the city.

Condemning the latest incident, religious leaders and scholars expressed their serious concern over the fresh wave of killings targeting members of a particular sect in the city. They said the ongoing sectarian killings had exposed the government claims that a strategy was ready to take action against the banned outfits.

"Karachi has become a centre of targeted killings," said Allama Abbas Kumaili of the Jafria Alliance Pakistan. "An operation has become crucial to root out terrorism and its links in the city. Otherwise, it will be a disastrous situation beyond everyone's control."

Later in the evening, an activist of the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamaat was gunned down near his apartment on University Road, police and party sources said.

Ibrahim Mana, 32, was targeted by two armed motorcyclists close to the Met Office, an official of the Mobina Town police station said. He said the activist received five bullets in his upper torso.

"He was walking home when targeted by the armed men on a motorbike," said the official. "He was rushed to a private hospital in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, where he died during the treatment. The body was later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities."

A spokesman for the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamaat termed the fresh killing an attempt to foment sectarian unrest. He cited "anti-state forces behind the frequent murders of the aides."

"We have lost at least three colleagues within a week," said Ahsanullah Farooqi of the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamaat, formerly called the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan. "Our appeals and request to the authorities concerned for the security of the party workers have been ignored and it seems that the authorities are not interested in maintaining peace in the city."

Meanwhile, markets remained closed in Nazimabad and Ancholi as fear gripped various localities amid interrupted gunfire. A bus was also set ablaze near the Petrol Pump bus stop in Nazimabad.

An hour after sunset, charged youths hurled stones at the vehicles passing through the Golimar area. The situation became even more precarious when police fired into the air and used teargas shells to disperse the mob.

The situation caused severe traffic jams in different areas, including Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Habib Bank Chowrangi, and on roads linking Nazimabad with other parts of the metropolis.

Fifteen people have lost their lives in the wave of sectarian killings in June. The frequent protest demonstrations against the killings have only won pledges from the authorities who claim to be very 'close to the killers.'

"We are looking into each case separately," said Sindh Inspector-General of Police Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak while speaking to Dawn on Monday.

"In several cases, we have found links that suggest these were indeed sectarian killings. Obviously, we have reason to believe that a few of them were executed by the banned outfits."

When asked what surety the police authorities could give to prevent the possible spread of sectarian unrest, he confidently said that a strategy had already been evolved to counter such attempts. "In some cases, we have identified the people behind the killings. Efforts are on for their arrests. We will not let it grow from this point," the IG said.

Aid group halts Pakistan work after employee slain
[Dawn] The international aid group Mercy Corps has suspended its operations in Pakistan after kidnappers killed one of its employees, the agency said Tuesday, the latest fallout from attacks on aid groups in the troubled nation.

Four Pakistani employees of Mercy Corps were abducted Feb. 18 as they drove to one of their offices in Quetta, the capital of southwest Baluchistan province. The staffers were working on health programs in the restive region.

A Mercy Corps press release said the agency recently learned that a 52-year-old driver in the group, identified only as Habibullah, had been slain earlier this month. There was no word on the fate of the other three staffers.

''It is shocking and tragic that someone dedicated to improving the lives of Pakistanis should be the target of such senseless violence,'' Mercy Corps chief executive Neal Keny-Guyer said in the statement.

The Portland, Ore.-based agency did not say how long its work will be suspended. Mercy Corps has been working in Pakistan since 1986 on a variety of health, economic development and emergency relief programs.

As extremism has risen and the security situation deteriorated in Pakistan, aid groups including those overseen by the United Nations have been attacked and forced to scale back their activities.

Militants in particular have accused such organizations of working against Islam, greatly hampering efforts to raise living standards in the desperately poor country.

Ordinary crime also has been on the rise, with kidnappings spiking throughout Pakistan. While many kidnappers are attracted by ransom money, some of the profits are believed to reach the coffers of extremist groups.

LeJ commander Qari Zafar killed in 'accidental IED blast'
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] A dreaded militant commander, Qari Zafar, allegedly involved in the attack on the US Consulate in Karachi on March 2, 2006, has reportedly been killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast near Miramshah in North Waziristan a few days ago.

The US had announced five million dollars in head money on him for his alleged involvement in attack on their consulate in Karachi. Zafar belonged to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and was wanted to the government for his involvement in several terrorist attacks. His close aides confirmed his death and claimed he was killed after mistakenly touching some explosives dumped inside his Hujra (male guesthouse) near Miramshah in North Waziristan. They said that he was killed on June 7 but members of his militant organisation did not want to make it public.

"He was actually searching for some materials and suddenly touched wires which triggered the blast in the IEDs stored there. He and a child, belonging to his relatives, died on the spot while two bodyguards sustained serious injuries," a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi commander told The News on condition of anonymity.

Talking to this scribe by telephone from somewhere in North Waziristan, the Taliban commander said Qari Zafar, aged 38 to 40 years, was living there for sometime with his family and relatives. He ruled out the widely believed rumours among the militants that some people might have planted an IED to kill him.

"He used to be very cautious and had restricted his movement to a great extent, but life is mortal and everyone has to die sooner or later," remarked the Urdu-speaking militant commander.

Taliban 'reappear' in Bajaur Agency
After a two-year long successful military operation and the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs), Taliban have reappeared in Bajaur Agency, warning Levies Force officials through letters to stop the offensive or be ready to face the consequences. Sources told Daily Times that the threats written on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) letterheads were distributed in various areas of the agency's Mamoond and Khar tehsils on Monday, saying the TTP would continue its fight in Bajaur against the US and its allies.

The TTP has asked the Levies Force to stop actions against the organisation.

Residents said they feared for their safety again after the distribution of the threatening letters.

On April 19, FATA Law and Order Secretariat Secretary Tariq Hayat told a press briefing, "Security forces had claimed security clearance in most of Bajaur after military operations."

"We have de-notified the status of conflict zones in 34 villages in tehsil Wara Mamund and 19 villages of tehsil Nawagai, Charmang areas," he had said. He, however, feared that the Taliban could recapture the cleared areas of the agency if IDPs were not repatriated to these areas.

The battle for Bajaur or Operation Sherdil was launched by the Pakistan Army in August 2008 to clear the area of the Taliban, in control of the agency since early 2007.

Roadside bomb injures 3, kills Thai soldier
One soldier has been killed and three military rangers injured in a bomb blast as they were patrolling a road to protect teachers travelling to a school in Bannang Sata district, police say. The four were among eight security officers patrolling a road leading to Ban Bajoh school when a roadside bomb went off as they were about 300 metres from the school, investigators said.

Police who inspected pieces of metal and a mobile phone found at the spot believe explosives had been put into a metal box weighing between 3kg and 5kg. It was hidden by the road and detonated remotely by the mobile phone as the officers passed by.

At Yala Regional Hospital, Joint Security Command chief Kasikorn Kirisri yesterday gave financial assistance to three injured soldiers who were wounded in another road bomb attack in Muang district last Friday.

Meanwhile, Yala governor Krissada Boonraj has presided over a bathing ceremony for Sunan Kaerat, 58, who died after he was wounded by a grenade thrown by an terrorist insurgent suspect into a restaurant on Ruam Mit Road in Muang district on Saturday.

The Chula Ratchamontri, Aziz Phitakkumpon, yesterday asked families to take more care of their children to prevent them from being lured into joining terror insurgent groups. The Chula Ratchamontri was speaking during the opening of the Dawah-Daiyah project, which is aimed at training Muslims according to religious principles so they can adhere better to Islamic practices. About 500 participants joined the training session held at the Yala Municipality youth centre in Muang district.

Malaysia deports 10 foreign terrorist suspects
[Dawn] Malaysia has arrested and deported 10 foreigners suspected of trying to recruit university students to revive a regional terrorist network, police said Tuesday.
More detail on yesterday's story...
The foreigners were arrested over the past six months at different locations, national police chief Musa Hassan said. They allegedly tried to recruit students to work abroad for the Al-Qaeda-linked Southeast Asian group Jemaah Islamiyah.
I don't know if JI is trying to come back or if it's been reborn as al-Q in Aceh.
Jemaah Islamiyah is blamed for several deadly attacks in the region, including the 2002 bombings on the Indonesian island of Bali that killed 202 people.

"All have been deported," Musa told The Associated Press, declining to give further details.

The Star daily quoted him as saying police were monitoring 20 to 30 students, and the foreigners began talking to them about joining the group.

"This trend is very worrying as it shows that these militants have changed their tactics and strategies in recruiting members, especially for their activities in other countries," Musa was quoted as saying. "Police will monitor students attending any talks that can cause upheaval and threaten national security."

Musa said students were "usually targeted as they are young and believe in things more easily," the New Straits Times reported.

Separately, the government arrested nine other foreigners and one Malaysian in January under a law that allows detention without trial. Two of the foreigners - who were from Jordan, Nigeria, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere - were deported in March, but there was no information on the others' status.

Activists say police arrested the men with some 40 others at a home near Kuala Lumpur while attending a weekly Islamic class with a Syrian university lecturer. The others were later freed.

Over the past decade, Malaysian authorities have detained more than 100 militant suspects, most alleged to be members of Jemaah Islamiyah. Authorities have freed many, saying they have been rehabilitated. None was ever charged.

Since the 2002 Bali attack, a regional security crackdown has seen hundreds of militants killed or captured and convicted.

Jemaah Islamiyah was accused of carrying out the deadly July 2009 bombings at two luxury hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a plot to assassinate that country's president.

The bombings ended a four-year lull in terrorist attacks in Indonesia.
