Kabul arrests 5 over Peshawar killings
Afghan security forces have arrested five men suspected of involvement in last month’s massacre at a school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, an Afghan security source said Saturday.
Several Taleban gunmen stormed the school in the northwestern city of Peshawar last month, killing 150 people, mostly children, in the country’s deadliest ever militant attack.

Morocco says it breaks up militant cell recruiting for ISIS
[Ynet]. Morocco said on Saturday it had dismantled an Islamist krazed killer cell sending fighters to Syria and Iraq to join Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and mount attacks on returning home.

The cell, the latest of series of radical groups authorities say they have uncovered, had been active in the city of Meknes and the towns of El-Hajeb and El-Hoceima in the Northern Rif mountains, the interior ministry said in a statement. It said the head of the cell had been in contact with Islamic State and had sent volunteers.

"According to intelligence reports, Moroccans fighting in Syria and Iraq have been trained in handling weapons and manufacturing explosives to perpetrate attacks once they return to Morocco," the statement said. "Some of the eight members of the cell have been convicted in other terrorism cases in the past."

Report: Egypt uncovers explosives-laden tunnel between Sinai and Gaza
[Ynet]. Military forces find, blow up 1,200-meter long tunnel with large amount of explosives, mortar shells; shaft opening located in smuggler's home.

Egyptian forces uncovered a 1,200-meter long tunnel running from the Gazoo Strip into the Sinai Peninsula with a large amount of explosives and mortar shells inside, the Paleostinian news agency Ma'an reported on Saturday. The shaft opening was located inside an apartment belonging to an Egyptian smuggler.

Egyptian army corps of engineers blew up the tunnel, which was reportedly equipped with telephone lines and electric lighting. Military officials said that they also had information on tunnels up to 3 kilometers deep located on Egyptian territory.

Earlier in January, Egypt began work on doubling the width of a buffer zone along the border with the Gazoo Strip to prevent turbans infiltrating from the Paleostinian enclave, security officials said. The buffer was initially planned to be 500 metres (546 yard) wide, but is now being expanded by another 500 metres.

The army has also stepped up destruction of tunnels from Gazoo that it says are used to smuggle arms, food and money by the Paleostinian turban group Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

It says it has destroyed more than 1,600 tunnels since Morsi's ouster.

Peacekeeper Killed in Fresh Attack on U.N. Camp in Mali
[AnNahar]. A soldier with the U.N. force in Mali was killed early on Saturday when gunnies launched a fresh attack on the camp housing U.N. troops in the country's north, a source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"Terrorists attacked the Minusma camp" in the early morning hours on Saturday, a source with the U.N. force told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Minusma soldiers responded and unfortunately one Chadian soldier was killed, another injured."

The attack marked the latest raid by suspected jihadists in Mali's restive north and came a day after two Malian soldiers were killed in the central town of Tenenkou.

The vast, sparsely-populated region fell to Islamist groups in 2012 before the Death Eaters were routed from the area by a French-led military intervention which has since been replaced by the U.N. Minusma force.

Jihadists launch regular raids on U.N. forces. On January 5, 11 Malian soldiers were killed during an assault on the Nampala garrison near the border with Mauritania.

Thousands cheer Chadian troops off to fight Boko Haram
[Yahoo] Tens of thousands of people marched in N'Djamena on Saturday in support of Chadian soldiers heading to Nigeria and Cameroon to fight against Boko Haram. Marching some three miles through Chad's capital city, demonstrators waved the national flag and chanted in French and Arabic, "Kick the forces of evil out of our territory."

Prime Minister Kalzeube Pahimi Deubet said the march sends "a strong signal, a warning to Boko Haram".

A huge convoy set off from N'Djamena to combat the Islamists currently terrorizing northeastern Nigeria and northern Cameroon. Thousands of locals cheered the arrival of some 400 vehicles in the Cameroonian border town of Kousseri.

Boko Haram recently launched an assault on the strategic town of Baga on the banks of Lake Chad, which straddles the borders of Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon. Chad is part of a regional force against Boko Haram that was based in Baga, but both Chad and Niger had withdrawn their troops before the attack.

Chadian President Idriss Deby said, "Cameroon must not be left alone to face this threat that has so hurt innocent people in Cameroon and in Nigeria," calling for a "broad coalition" to fight Boko Haram.

But Nigeria expressed lukewarm support for the Chad mission. Nigerian army spokesman Chris Olukolade said, "All support for our operations will be welcome, but it must conform with our own ongoing operations."

Niger protesters burn churches in second day of Charlie riots
[Rooters - Afri] NIAMEY Jan 17 - Stone-throwing demonstrators set fire to two churches in Niger's capital Niamey on Saturday, in the latest protest in France's former African colonies at French newspaper Charlie Hebdo's cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. A day after five people were killed in Niger in protests over the cartoons, protesters in Niamey attacked a police station and burned at least two police cars near the main mosque after authorities banned a meeting called by local Muslim leaders. Police responded with teargas.

"They offended our Prophet Mohammed. That's what we didn't like," said Amadou Abdoul Ouahab, who took part in the demonstration. "This is the reason why we have asked Muslims to come, so that we can explain this to them, but the state refused. That's why we're angry today."

Yemen arrests 2 Frenchmen over suspected al-Qaeda links
[Ynet]. Yemen's national security chief said Saturday authorities have incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
two French citizens suspected of being members of al-Qaeda, without mentioning whether they were involved in this month's attack on a French newspaper.

Gen. Ali Hassan al-Ahmadi said the two were arrested on charges of belonging to the Death Eater group.

Speaking to news hounds in the capital, Sanaa, he said that al-Qaeda has around 1,000 members in Yemen, from 11 different Arab and non-Arab countries.

Gunmen Seize Yemen President's Chief of Staff
[AnNahar]. Gunmen on Saturday seized Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi's chief of staff, whose nomination as prime minister last year was rejected by Shiite Death Eaters controlling the capital, an official said.

The Huthi militia, who overran Sanaa last September, are suspected of being behind the abduction of Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the official added.

"An gang set up a checkpoint in Hada," a southern district of Sanaa, and "captured Mubarak with his lover companions," the official from the national dialogue secretariat told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Mubarak is secretary general of the national dialogue set up to oversee the political transition following the 2012 resignation of veteran president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
after a bloody year-long uprising.

He was "driven away to an unknown location," the official said, adding that the abductors "are suspected of being Huthi militiamen".

Yemen has been dogged by instability since Saleh's ouster, with the Huthis and Al-Qaeda seeking to fill the power vacuum.

Mubarak, a southerner, was one of the representatives in the dialogue of the Southern Movement, which seeks autonomy or secession for the formerly independent south.

Hadi named him as prime minister in October, but Mubarak turned down the job following strong opposition from the Huthis and from Saleh's General People's Congress party.

The Huthis are widely believed to be backed by Saleh.

The UN Security Council in November slapped sanctions -- including a visa ban and asset freeze -- on Saleh and two rebel commanders for threatening peace.

Mubarak's abduction comes a day after one of two Huthis Hadi appointed as presidential advisers late last year announced he was quitting because his advice had been spurned.

"I had done all I could in recent months to try to achieve reconciliation between the (Huthi) rebels, and the presidency and government, Saleh al-Sammad wote on his Facebook page on Friday.

"I tried offering the president and the government advice on the need to reassure the rebels by taking measures on the ground to build confidence that there is a serious attempt to build a state, fight corruption, and end political monopoly... but my advice fell on deaf ears."

Since their takeover of the capital, the Huthis have pressed their advance into mainly Sunni areas south of Sanaa, where they have met deadly resistance from armed Sunnis, including Al-Qaeda loyalists.

The turmoil has raised fears that Yemen, which neighbors oil-rich Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and lies on the key shipping route from the Suez Canal to the Gulf, may become a failed state similar to Somalia.

Hadi has struggled to assert his authority since the Huthi takeover of the capital.

On Monday, the Huthis released a top intelligence official they had held captive for more than two weeks after seizing him from his home in Sanaa.

General Yahia al-Marrani, the intelligence services' head of internal security, was set free following mediation by neighboring Oman, a security official said.

Some 20 Huthi gunnies had taken part in his abduction on December 25.

Britain
Schoolgirl arrested at Stansted airport returning from warzone
A British schoolgirl arrested yesterday by anti-terror police after she landed at Stansted Airport has been released on bail after being questioned overnight. Silhan Ozchelik was feared to have run away to Syria to fight against ISIS and was held upon her return to the UK yesterday.

Ms Ozcelik was 17 when she went missing in October. It was feared she had become the first UK female to join the war against the jihadis.

Her family said Silhan, now 18, was on a humanitarian mission.
If she's 18 she's not a schoolgirl. Though I suppose she could now be a co-ed...
The Kurdish teenager, from Highbury Corner, North London, left St Pancras International on the Eurostar before making her way to the warzone.

Counter-terror police arrested her at 4pm yesterday after she arrived on a flight. She was taken to a central London police station where she was questioned. She was released this evening on bail.
Bail?
She has to return to a central London police station at a date in the middle of February.

The Home Office said police had been issued with guidance to be alert to ‘any possible dangers’ adding: ‘These are sensible precautions and are intended to underline existing protective security procedures and inform operational risk assessments.’

Speaking yesterday, Britain's senior anti-terrorism policeman, assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said there were 327 arrests for terrorism offences in the UK last year - and increase of one-third on 2013.

Greece: Man matching Belgian terror cell leader's description arrested
[Ynet]. Widening a European counterterrorism dragnet, Greek authorities on Saturday detained four terrorism suspects including a man believed to be the ringleader of a Belgian jihadi cell.

A Greek police official said the four were nabbed

separately in Athens and included a man who matches the description of Abdelhamid Abaaoud - who Belgian authorities suspect was behind a jihadi cell that was dismantled in Belgium on Thursday.

Authorities in Belgium were going over photos, fingerprints and DNA material sent from Greek police to try to verify whether the person was Abaaoud, said Greek and Belgian officials, speaking only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of an ongoing investigation.
The Times of Israel adds this tidbit:
The arrests took place in the Pangrati district of the Greek capital in the middle of the day, the source said. Several mobile phones were also seized.

Belgium terror suspects had police uniforms
[FOXNEWS] The two terror suspects killed in a Belgium raid Thursday had police uniforms at their hideout, along with a cache of assault rifles, knives and explosives, Sky News reported.

Fake IDs were found among the weapons cache, which included AK-47s.

Sky News also reported that more than 25 people were being held in Belgium, La Belle France and Germany amid fears of another terror attack. In Belgium alone, 13 people were in jug, five of whom were later charged with "participating in the activities of a terrorist group."

Belgian federal magistrate Eric Van der Sypt said the terrorists' goal was to kill police on the street or in their offices.

The magistrate added that some of the terror suspects had recently returned from Syria, where they had been training and fighting with the Islamic State

Death sentences for TTP men behind 2010 Ahmadi attack
[DAWN] LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday sentenced to death two Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) men, Moavia and Abdullah, for the deadly attack on an Ahmadi place of worship in 2010.

On May 28, 2010, gunnies attacked two Ahmadiyya places of worship in the city of Lahore with guns, grenades, and suicide bombs, killing 94 people and wounding well over 100. The Punjabi Taliban, a local affiliate of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (the Pak Taliban or TTP), grabbed credit. Two men were captured during the attack, but the government was heavily criticised by rights groups for failing to make progress on their trial, seeking repeated adjournments from the court as has the defense.

Pakistan Hangs 19th Militant since School Attack
[AnNahar]. Pakistain on Saturday hanged a sectarian myrmidon whose execution was cancelled but later reinstated after a court rejected a pardon from his victim's family, officials said.

The hanging brings to 19 the number of executions Pakistain has carried out since it lifted a six-year moratorium on the death penalty in terror cases following a school massacre last month.

Ikramul Haq, a member of banned Sunni myrmidon outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
, was hanged in the central city of Lahore early on Saturday morning.

He had been sentenced to death by an anti-terror court in 2004 for killing a Shiite Moslem three years earlier.

Police, prison officials and defense lawyer Ghulam Mustafa Mangan confirmed the execution.

The victim's family had pardoned him on January 8 just before his scheduled hanging, but a court later rejected the compromise.

"The victim's family had pardoned my client, but the court rejected it and while we were appealing against the decision, my client was hanged," Mangan told AFP.

Murder can be forgiven under Pak law in exchange for blood money, while rival myrmidon groups may choose to pardon each others' convicted killers.

#4  Progressives are all about power. They respect others who demonstrate theirs. They have little time for those who actually wrap themselves up in minor things like 'law'. For progressives, law is what they want it to be at any one time.

#5  I think the comments on progressives are way off. I think the problem is more that many (not all) progressives can't bear to criticize third world people. One could see this as prejudice against whites in that if white people do something terrible, it's bad, but if non-white people do it they get a pass. Or one could see it as traditional prejudice because not holding non-whites to moral standards is condescending, racist and demeaning.

Southeast Asia
Armed group kills three in Sulawesi
[Jakarta Post] An armed group is alleged to have gunned down one person and slaughtered two others in Poso regency, Central Sulawesi, amid the arrests of six members of the fugitive network led by Santoso this week.

The shooting of Dolfis Alipa, a student at Sintuwu Maroso University, occurred on Thursday in Tangkura subdistrict. Poso Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ronny Suseno said, "The victim was shot dead on his way home from a field not far from his house."

The same group allegedly also killed two other locals, Heri Tobio and Aditla Tetembu. The police found them slain with their throats slit.

The Indonesian National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism unit has nabbed six people in Poso this week alleged to have links with the Santoso-led group. They were identified only by their initials R, S, H, R, A and I. A man with the initials IS, from Pandajaya Pendolo subdistrict, was also killed as the Densus team attempted to arrest him in East Luwu, South Sulawesi.

Poso was the scene of sectarian conflict that lasted from 1998 to 2000. Over 2,000 people were killed or went missing during that period. In 2001, a peace meeting resulted in a peace agreement called the Malino Declaration.

However, new radical groups have been born in the meantime, including Jemaah Islamiyah, led by cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, now serving a 15-year sentence in Central Java. Later, another group, Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT), emerged and was eventually defeated.

More recently, another group calling themselves East Indonesian Mujahidin (MIT), has emerged under the leadership of Santoso.

NPA cancels release of kidnapped cops
[Tempo] The scheduled release today of three kidnapped members of the Philippine National Police in Surigao del Norte was cancelled by the National Democratic Front (NDF).

In a statement, the NDF said the cancellation was due to the refusal of the Philippine military to temporarily withdraw their operatives in the area where the release was scheduled to take place. The militants added that the temporary withdrawal was meant for a safe and orderly release of the captured policemen and to avoid possible encounter between the soldiers and the New People's Army (NPA).

The police officers were captured by NPA militants in the area on November 12 and 16 last year.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Israel prunes Mugnhniyeh Family Tree in Syria
An Israeli helicopter strike on Syria's Golan Heights Sunday killed the son of slain Hezbollah top commander Imad Mughniyeh and 9 other fighters, a Lebanese security source told The Daily Star.
"Bingo"
Jihad Mughniyeh, field commander Mohammad Issa who goes by the nom de guerre "Abu Issa" and 7 other Hezbollah fighters were killed in the attack, the source said.

An Iranian field commander Abu Ali Tabtabai was also killed in the strike. The strike entirely destroyed one Hezbollah vehicle and damaged another, the source said.
"Two-fer"
Hezbollah issued a statement confirming the strike saying "a number of mujahedeens were martyred," during an inspection mission in the Syrian town of Quneitra. The Hezbollah statement added that the names of the fighters will be divulged later.
"we're still assembling noses and elbows and such"
In addition to Mughniyeh and Issa, the source said some of the Hezbollah fighters who were killed in the strike include: Mahdi Nasser al-Moussawi, Ali Fouad Hasan, Ghazi Ali Dawi, Hussein Hasan Hasan and Hussein Ismail al-Ashhab.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli forces went on high alert in the Shebaa Farms area, southeast of Lebanon, after news emerged that Hezbollah fighters were the target of the strike.
"our bad"
An Israeli helicopter carried out a strike against "terrorists" in the Syrian sector of the Golan Heights who were allegedly preparing an attack on Israel, an Israeli security source had earlier said.

Kurds battle Assad's forces in Syria, opening new front in civil war
[Ynet]. Syrian Kurds battled on Saturday with forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
, Kurdish sources and a monitoring group said, breaking a longstanding tacit agreement between the two sides to focus on other enemies in a complex civil war.

In Syria's predominantly Kurdish northeast, Assad's forces and Kurdish militia, mainly the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), have for the most part coexisted without clashing, focusing their firepower on the Islamic State

violence broke out when army soldiers and allied Death Eaters took control of buildings in an area that both sides had agreed would stay demilitarised, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

10 soldiers and Baath party gunnies," Observatory head Rami Abdulrahman told Rooters. "There is now fighting in many areas of Hassakeh."
An Nahar adds:
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting broke out at around 2 am at several points in the city, control of which is split between the two sides. Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britannia-based group, said there had been heavy fighting since then.

Four regime forces and a Kurdish fighter had been killed so far, as well as a woman in regime shelling of an area controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units.

The festivities began after Kurdish fighters detained around 10 regime forces they accused of seizing part of a demilitarized zone.

Under a deal agreed last year, Kurdish forces control around 30 percent of the city's Kurdish and mixed Kurdish-Arab districts, with regime forces controlling most of the city's majority-Arab districts.
