Global internet slows after 'biggest attack in history'
A row between a spam-fighting group and hosting firm has sparked retaliation attacks affecting the wider internet.

Spamhaus, a group based in both London and Geneva, is a non-profit organisation which aims to help email providers filter out spam and other unwanted content. To do this, the group maintains a number of blocklists - a database of servers known to be being used for malicious purposes.

Recently, Spamhaus blocked servers maintained by Cyberbunker, a Dutch web host which states it will host anything with the exception of child pornography or terrorism-related material.

Sven Olaf Kamphuis, who claims to be a spokesman for Cyberbunker, said, in a message, that Spamhaus was abusing its position, and should not be allowed to decide "what goes and does not go on the internet".

Spamhaus has alleged that Cyberbunker, in cooperation with "criminal gangs" from Eastern Europe and Russia, is behind the attack.

Cyberbunker has not responded to the BBC's request for comment.

The attackers have used a tactic known as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), which floods the intended target with large amounts of traffic in an attempt to render it unreachable. Spamhaus's Domain Name System (DNS) servers were targeted.

"These attacks are peaking at 300 gb/s (gigabits per second).
Solution sounds simple to me. Since they are obviously terrorists... grab them and deliver to angry users in dark alleys with no police.

Afghanistan
Kerry Meets Again with Afghan President Karzai
[An Nahar] U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
met again Tuesday with Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
, a day after they put on a show of unity as they tried to end recent bickering over anti-American comments made by the Afghan leader.

Kerry also met Tuesday at the American Embassy in Kabul with participants in a U.S.-backed women's entrepreneurship program. He heard a succession of concerns from businesswomen fearful of what the 2014 transition will mean for not only for women and girls but for Afghanistan's commerce in general.

Many advocates for women's rights worry that the departure of international troops will lead to a deterioration in conditions for women, who were denied basic rights such as education under Taliban rule.

"After the transition happens, we are hoping for the same attention" as we get now, said Hassina Syed, who runs catering, construction and transportation firms. With the transition approaching "there is a lot of negative effect on the business sector," she told Kerry.

Kerry also spoke with civic leaders preparing for Afghanistan's 2014 elections, telling them he wanted to pay the "respects of everybody in America for the journey that you are on and for the great contribution you're making to your country and the efforts you're making to develop this democracy."

"You're engaged in a remarkable effort and the whole world is watching," Kerry said.

Algeria protestors disavow al-Qaeda
[MAGHAREBIA] Algeria's National Committee for Protection of the Rights of the Unemployed (CNDDC) on Sunday (March 24th) disavowed attempts by terrorist and other political entities to exploit their movement.

CNDDC front man Tahar Belabes issued the statement after al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) announced their support for the demands of southern Algerians who recently staged protests to demand employment.

"We as unemployed people do not have anything to do with al-Qaeda or other gangs because our movement is peaceful and denounces violence in principle. We're not responsible for any behaviour or statement made by any group," Belabes said.

The committee rejected any political attempts to exploit its popular movement by any political forces for their own goals and ideas. Unemployed people understood these attempts and said from the very beginning that they did not accept any political exploitation of their demands by any party.

Movement members expelled some MPs and party leaders who went to Ouargla province, the cradle of protests.

The CNDDC said they carried purely social and employment-related demands and that they did not have anything to do with political manoeuvres or the goals of suspicious terrorist groups.

Several areas in southern Algeria have recently witnessed protests in which protestors demanded the government honour promises made a few days ago. The youths' protests extended from Ouargla to Laghouat, Ghardaia and other provinces.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village Jack was learning how to rub noses with Nootka's wife......
protesters are stressing the peaceful nature of their movement, which aims at creating dynamism and fairness in employment and achieving a stride in development in the south.

"The southern young people refuse to believe that a terrorist group would adopt legitimate social demands that young people expressed peacefully," protestor Abed said. "We just don't need their help."

"Ours and theirs are not the same methods, and the difference between armed action used by AQIM and the youths' social demands for work and dignity is clear," he added.

No emergency law in Egypt, for now
[Al Ahram] President Mohamed Morsi said that if he has to "impose exceptional measures to restore domestic order" he will do so, emphasising that he "is afraid" he might have to.
No he isn't...
Morsi's statement came on Sunday as he gave a speech in the opening session of a conference devoted to women's rights and freedoms at the presidential palace in Cairo, and was widely understood by the opposition as a direct threat that a crackdown on his opponents is on the way.

A few hours after the president's speech, in which he also accused the media of inciting violence, Media Production City (MPC) in Sixth October City on Sunday was besieged by Islamist protesters who came to condemn what they perceived as anti-Islamist bias in the Egyptian private media.

A number of television stars and opposition figures were both verbally and physically attacked at the gates of the media complex.

The sit-in in Sixth October gave more reasons for Morsi's opponents to believe that his speech was a green light to his supporters and that his words were not only threats but rather a sign that more "exceptional measures" are about to be imposed.

"What we are witnessing now reminds me of what happened in September 1981 under [former president] Sadat", human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
activist Gamal Eid told Ahram Online, comparing Morsi's possible crackdown to the massive police strike that Sadat ordered against the Egyptian opposition and in which more than 1,500 political figures from all parts of the political spectrum were put in prison.

"At that time too President Sadat said that he was doing this for the good of the nation but the result was his liquidation, a lesson that Morsi does not seem to have learnt," Eid added.

Morsi warned in his speech about those trying to "sabotage" the course of the January 25 revolution and Egypt's democratic transition and cause chaos. He also warned the political opposition against trying to give a political cover to violence.

Armed Islamists Vow to Continue Fight in Mali
[An Nahar] An armed Islamist group which occupied northern Mali last year vowed Tuesday to continue its fight to drive out the French and African troops that routed it in a lightning military operation in January.

Ansar Dine, Arabic for "defenders of the faith", was one of three jihad boy organizations to take advantage of the disarray following a coup to claim control of Mali's vast northern desert, imposing a brutal form of sharia law in its cities.

"We reassure our parents in Mali, particularly in Azawad (northern Mali), that their sons within Ansar Dine are in a good situation, resist by the grace of Allah and continue to lead the fighting under the command of Iyad Ag Ghaly, who is doing well," the group said in a statement published by Mauritanian news portal Sahara Media.

Ag Ghaly, an ethnic Tuareg rebel who gave up a career as a high-level diplomat to take up arms, founded Ansar Dine early last year, but unconfirmed reports claim he has fled abroad.

His fighters, along with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, are accused of committing atrocities in the Malian cities of Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal, including amputations and summary executions.

They were driven out by a French military action that began on January 11, supported by African troops, and are being hunted down in an ongoing French-led mission to flush them out of the remote northeastern Ifoghas mountains.

The statement said Ansar Dine had managed to inflict damage on the French army and "Chadian mercenaries" in the mountain range, "despite the siege imposed on us".

La Belle France said in early March that "dozens" of rebels had been killed in fighting in the Ifoghas.

But Ansar Dine said the corpse count ascribed to the group by the French was "totally false and intended only to improve the low morale of their troops".

"The truth that the press still hides is that the French soldiers, and with them the Chadian mercenaries, continue to suffer all kinds of punishment from (our) youths (who) are hunted on land and from the air," the statement said.

MP Petition Gen Kayihura over the Arrest of Imams
Uganda: Kawempe North MP who also serves as the Uganda parliament Imam Latif Ssebaggala has petitioned the inspector general of police Kale Kayihura demanding him to correct the impression were the police spokesperson Judith Nabakoba arrested 10 Imams Monday accusing them for training terrorists.

According to Nabakoba, the ten Imams were arrested for training 30 children and are suspected to be involved in sending Muslim children to various countries for training as the Islamic extremists linked to terror.

He says that police statement may lead to many Moslem parents abandon sending their children to Islamic centers under fear of being misunderstood at the expense of their cherished Islamic norms and practice.

We must all fight terrorism in all its forms but we shouldn't at any one time encroach on people's freedom of worship which is guaranteed by our laws" The angry Latif noted

"As you carry out your mandate of keeping law and order, I implore you not to tarnish the image of Islam and the Muslims in general by attributing them to terrorist related activities. Memorization of Quran and teaching Islamic doctrines has never and will never be a basis for terrorism recruitment since it has been the practice for centuries" He added
and then his lips fell off
He also said that the freedom of worship is clearly enshrined in our constitution and nowhere in our laws parents are barred from teaching their children principles and practices of their religion at tender ages and there are no gazette places for this system.

Nigeria: MEND Threatens 'Hell' Over Okah's Jail As Keyamo Condemns Judgement
The armed militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, on Tuesday condemned the 24-year jail term passed on its leader, Henry Okah, by the South African High Court over charges that he masterminded a series of terrorism incidents, including the October 1, 2010 twin bombings in Abuja.

The group threatened 'hell' over the conviction of Mr. Okah.

Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has also condemned the trial and conviction of Mr. Okah, describing the sentence by the South African court as "totally flawed."

Justice Neels Claaseen of the High Court in South Gauteng in South Africa on Tuesday sentenced Mr. Okah to 24 years in prison after finding him guilty on 13 terrorism charges, including the Abuja bombing in which a dozen persons were killed as Nigeria was celebrating its 50th independence anniversary.

According to Mr. Claassen, during the trial Mr. Okah showed little remorse for his crime. He also pointed out that Mr. Okah's intentions in the bombing incidents were to "obtain maximum casualties."

"Effectively, the accused Okah is therefore sentenced to 24 years imprisonment," Mr. Claassen said.

Saudi Says Busted Spy Cell 'Directly Linked' to Iran
[An Nahar] An alleged spy cell dismantled last week in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
had "direct links" to Iran's intelligence services, the kingdom's interior ministry said on Tuesday.

"Preliminary investigations and physical evidence that has been collected as well as the defendants' statements on this case have all revealed direct links between this cell and Iranian intelligence services," a ministry front man said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

"These elements had regularly received sums of money in return for information and documents on important installations during the spy operation in the interest of these services," it said.

On March 19, the interior ministry in Riyadh said authorities had incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
16 Saudis, an Iranian and a Lebanese citizen in four regions including Eastern Province, where the Sunni-ruled kingdom's Shiite minority is concentrated.

But Iranian media reported on Sunday that the Shiite-dominated Islamic republic has denied any link to the suspected spy cell.

"Investigations are still ongoing with members of this cell and legal procedures will be taken against them," said the Saudi statement.

Bahrain Parliament Labels Hizbullah 'Terrorist Organization' in Urgent Bill
[An Nahar] Bahrain's parliament approved on Tuesday in an unprecedented step an urgent proposal to label Hizbullah a terrorist organization, calling on the cabinet to coordinate with the country's Foreign Ministry and with its counterparts in the Gulf Cooperation Council's nations to put the suggestion in force.

The proposal was referred to the cabinet after it succeeded in receiving a majority vote at the parliament.

"I demand the FM to collaborate with the GCC countries to crush Hizbullah," Salafist politician Jassim al-Saeedi stated at the parliament.

Meanwhile,
...back at the fist fight, Jake ducked another roundhouse, then parried with his left, then with his right, finally with his chin...
MP Khaled Abdul Aal told CNN television that al-Saeedi's proposal has a "sectarian basis": "It is because Hizbullah is Shiite, despite being a resistance against Israel".

"His proposal is worthless and can be equated with demanding the expulsion of the U.S. ambassador for interfering in the nation's affairs," he added.

"Only the king has the authority to adopt such steps".

Britain
Seven Days To Save Terrorism Survivors Support Centre
Meanwhile the British government is spending millions on Muslim outreach programs and on POS like Abu Qatada. Money is never a problem when it's for our Muslim "brothers"
Money is never a problem when it's someone else's money...
Survivors of the 7/7 London bombings are fighting to save a support centre in Brent that helps victims of terrorist attacks. The Survivors of Terrorism charity has run out of money and will close in the next 7 days if it doesn't raise new funds.

Lisa French was on the bus in the Tavistock Square when it was bombed.

"We want to be survivors. We fought for our lives that day. Many of us were on life support machines," she explained.

She has told LBC 97.3 she has written to Prime Minister David Cameron asking for his help.

"[It is the Government's] responsibility to protect people from terrorist attack. When that fails I believe it is also the Government's responsibility to help provide support."
With all respect to the victims, it's been a while. What is the charity doing and why is it still needed?

Guantanamo hunger strike prompts urgent Red Cross visit
Is it Ramadan already?
The International Committee of the Red Thingy Cross says it is urgently sending a doctor to Guantanamo Bay because of a growing hunger strike among detainees.

The ICRC says the doctor and another group member are flying to Guantanamo a week earlier than planned "because of the current tensions" there.

A Pentagon spokesman says 31 of 166 detainees are now on hunger strike.

The inmates - many of whom are being held without charge - are angry at the US failure to resolve their fate. Last week, more than 21 people at the US detention facility in Cuba were on hunger strike.

The ICRC said on Wednesday that it had initially planned to send its team to Guantanamo on 1 April.

"However, in an effort to better understand current tensions and the ongoing hunger strike, we have decided to start this visit one week earlier," ICRC spokesman Simon Schorno said.

He added that "tensions at Guantanamo are certainly related, in our view, to the uncertainty that's prevailing on the future of the detainees".

"We see a clear link between that and their emotional state."
Other than being crazy, what other emotional state does a Jihadi have?

China-Japan-Koreas
20 ethnic Muslims jailed for separatism
About 20 ethnic Muslims in China's Xinjiang province have been convicted of militant separatism and sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

Courts in Kashgar and Bayingol prefectures in the northwestern Chinese province handed down sentences ranging from 5 years to life in prison in five separate cases, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

While the ethnicity of the defendants, their distinctive names and the specific allegations indicate they are Uighur, a Muslim ethnic group with a Turkic language.

Chinese media reported the suspects were accused of being "seduced by ideas of religious extremism and terrorist violence" and used "the Internet, mobile phones and digital storage devices to organize, lead and participate in terror organizations, provoke incidents and incite separatism."

While Uighurs once made up was the dominant group in the province, their numbers have fallen as Han Chinese immigrated into the area. Tensions in Xinjiang have risen between the groups as the government tightened controls on the region and the practice of Islam.

Some of those convicted in Kashgar were accused of using cellphones and videos to spread the militant ideas of the "East Turkestan Islamic Movement," and the "Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan," which China has accused of a separatist ideology.

One person in Bayingol was convicted to setting up a chat room to promote "ethnic separatism, terrorist violence and religious extremism."

North Korea photoshopping: Why would they want to trick the world?
North Korea's suspected photoshopping of images showing an amphibious hovercraft landing has raised a number of tantalising questions about what the regime in Pyongyang is up to.

Park Tells N. Korea 'Abandon Nuclear Weapons' to Survive
[An Nahar] South Korean President Park Geun-Hye warned North Korea on Tuesday that its only "path to survival" lay in abandoning its nuclear and missile programs.

In a speech to mark the third anniversary of the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel by what Seoul insists was a North Korean submarine, Park called on Pyongyang to "change course" at a time of elevated military tension on the Korean peninsula.

"For the North, the only path to survival lies in stopping provocations and threats, abandoning its nuclear weaponry and missiles, and becoming a responsible member of the international community," Park said.

The president delivered her speech at the national cemetery in the central city of Daejeon where the 46 sailors who died when the Cheonan corvette sunk are buried.

North Korea has always denied any involvement in the incident which precipitated a total freeze in South-North relations.

"Even now, North Korea is threatening our national security," Park said, citing Pyongyang's successful long-range rocket test in December and the third nuclear test it carried out last month.

Both events triggered U.N. sanctions that infuriated the North, which has spent the past month issuing increasingly dire threats about unleashing an "all-out war" backed by nuclear weapons.

Sabre-rattling and displays of brinkmanship are nothing new in the region, but there are concerns that the current situation is so volatile that one accidental step could escalate into serious confrontation and conflict.

Bruce Klingner, a Korea expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, believes the "risk of miscalculation and escalation" is heightened by the presence of new leaders in both Koreas.

#1  As things stand, the only way inter-Korean reunification can take place is iff the DPRK goes de facto nuclear widout Chinese consent, which by definition infers that the ROK M-U-S-T go nuclear in response to the North.

Ala the on-going, multilateral East China sea + South China Sea islands disputes, mainland China right now prob needs + requires the DPRK's military forces to assist in any mil conflict that occurs, espec agz the US-ROK-Japan + UNCOM.

'Combat-Ready' N. Korea Threatens Hawaii, U.S. Mainland
[An Nahar] North Korea's military put its "strategic" rocket units on a war footing Tuesday, with a fresh threat to strike targets on the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam, as well as South Korea.

The move came as South Korea marked the third anniversary of the sinking of its naval vessel "Cheonan" by what Seoul insists was a North Korean submarine.

"All artillery troops including strategic rocket units and long-range artillery units are to be placed under class-A combat readiness," the Korean People's Army (KPA) supreme command said in a statement.

The units should be prepared to attack "all U.S. military bases in the Asia-Pacific region, including the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam" and South Korea, said the statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

Despite a successful long-range rocket launch in December, most experts believe North Korea is years from developing a genuine inter-continental ballistic missile that could strike the mainland United States.

Hawaii and Guam would also be outside the range of its medium-range missiles, which would be capable, however, of striking U.S. bases in South Korea and Japan.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has spent the past few weeks touring frontline military units, monitoring live fire artillery drills and making inflammatory speeches about wiping out the enemy.

India-Pakistan
Threats from militant group: Candidates want polls postponed in Bara
[Dawn] The candidates for a National Assembly seat in Bara have demanded of the authorities to postpone the upcoming general elections in NA-46 constituency owing to threats from a myrmidon group and inability of political administration to devise a foolproof security plan for electioneering.

Although election campaign has not been launched in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency, yet Lashkar-e-Islam, a myrmidon group, has threatened to target all those people, who try to take part in the elections.

"The government is not sincere in holding peace talks with our group. As long as there is no clear cut response from the government side, we will not allow anyone to take part in the elections," said a message sent by Faqir Mohammad, a local commander of Lashkar-e-Islam, to the candidates in Bara. He also advised common people of Bara to stay away from election rallies.

Awami National Party candidate Imran Afridi told Dawn that it was not possible to hold elections in Bara as most of its parts were still inaccessible.

Besides, he said, fresh displacement of people from Tirah valley made it difficult for the candidates to run a smooth and peaceful election campaign.

"As most of the newly displaced families from Tirah are terrorised, how it will be possible for a candidate to ask them to come to polling station and vote for him," Mr Afridi said.

He said that his conscience didn't permit him to be so self-centered. "Heavens will not fall if elections are postponed in Bara for a few months till the situation improves and displace people are rehabilitated with honour," he said.

During the last elections held in 2008, he was a candidate on two seats of the Lower House of Parliament.

He lost election in NA-24, home constituency, but won in NA-26, Bannu.

Speaking at a news conference here on Monday, JUI-F deputy chief Maulana Attaur Rehman said the party's parliamentary committee had decided that Mr Fazl would contest elections in NA-24, Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
, NA-25, Dera Ismail Khan-cum-Tank and NA-27, Lakki Marwat.

He said Mr Fazl's younger brother, Maulana Lutfur Rehman, would contest elections on two provincial assembly seats, PK-64 and PK-66.

Mr Atta said Mr Fazl filed nomination papers for NA-25 on Monday.

"I am optimistic that JUI-F will emerge as a major party in elections. Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz is our favourite for seat adjustment in the province. Negotiations with it in this respect are in progress," he said.

According to him, former provincial chief minister Akram Khan Durrani, who was the opposition leader in the provincial assembly, has been given the party ticket in NA-26 and PK-70, Bannu.

The JUI-F leader also named the party's candidates for the National Assembly seats in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata) and those in the provincial assembly. He said names of candidates for NA-5, Nowshera and NA-40, North Wazoo Agency had not been finalised, while the party would not field candidates in PK-67 and PK-69 due to seat adjustment with Gandapur and Javid families.

Swat Taliban, Afghan govt nexus may give rise to terrorism, SC told
[Dawn] A recent nexus of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
bully boyz with the Afghan government may give rise to increased terrorist incidents on Pakistain's border areas including Mohmand, Bajaur Agencies, Dir, Swat and Chitral, said a report by Pakistain's premier intelligence agencies.

The report submitted Tuesday before the Supreme Court by Advocate Raja Mohammad Irshad on behalf of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI) on military operations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) province and FATA suggested that the Swat Taliban, after being dislodged from the area, have resorted to IED (improvised bombs) attacks on the law enforcing agencies and Aman Lashkars (pro-government militias).

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry hearing a petition challenging the Action in Aid of Civil Power Regulations 2011 had asked for the report on the setting up of internment centers in KP.

The report also carried graphic pictures of decapitated victims along with compact discs (CDs) and annexure showing statistics of casualties, suicide kabooms, murders, and schools and colleges destroyed from 2008 to 2013.

The government had established internment centers near the Pak-Afghan border at Landi Kotal, Parachinar (Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
) a tribal area of the KPK which allows the civilian government to detain persons accused of terrorism.

Read out by Advocate Raja Irshad in the open court, the report alleged that sectarian outfits took the leading role by victimisation of the Shia community especially in Quetta and Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, and the message conveyed was that the war on terror was not yet over rather the profile has changed and the TTP (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain) has merged itself with sectarian outfits.

The TTP and the allied groups, the report said, have again resorted to conventional methods of gathering funds like collection of chandah (charity), bank dacoities and abduction for ransom.

Referring to the importance of the regulations in the current environment, the report explained that the regulations were enacted to provide legal umbrella to the military and to deal with the unprecedented ground realities.

Furthermore, continuous stationing of armed forces in territories secured from myrmidons in the FATA/PATA is necessary and therefore it is imperative that proper authorisation be given to the forces to take measures to incapacitate the myrmidons by detaining them during the continuation of the Actions in Aid of Civil Power.

The regulation is also necessary to ensure that the armed forces carry out operation in accordance with the law, the report said.

The apprehended krazed killers, the report explained, have been shifted to internment centers established under the FATA/PATA regulations (Actions in Aid of Civil Power Regulations 2011).

On Jan 24, Attorney General Irfan Qadir had conceded for the first time before the Supreme Court that 700 suspected snuffies were in jug under the regulations.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Harrigan had lost the feeling in his legs from the cold. I told 'em they'd never take me alive, he thought. I was right!...
the report suggested that the regulations were applicable only during the duration of the action in aid of the civil power and were not applicable once the operation was over or the notification under Article 245 of the Constitution to call the army in aid of civil power was withdrawn.

Those interned, the report disclosed, include some of the most-hardened myrmidons and terrorists. If released for any reason, the government is convinced that they would attack the state again and would make every effort to rejoin private armies and carry out terrorist activities and offences against the state, in particular the KP government.

Islamic fascisti with the Afghan government may give rise to increased terrorist incidents on border areas including Mohmand, Bajaur Agencies, Dir, Swat and Chitral.

The report said that a total of 235 suicide kabooms, 9,257 rocket attacks and 4,256 bomb kabooms have taken place in KP and FATA since 2008.

Among the fatalities, 5,152 were civilians, 1,489 army officials, 675 Frontier Corps, while 1,717 belonged to the police force. In targeted attacks, 243 people belonging to lashkars were killed and 275 were maimed, while 995 schools and 35 colleges were also destroyed in the last five years.

The agencies' report cited 475 major and 135 small raids while 6000 search operations by the security forces in which, it said, 3,051 Islamic fascisti were killed. Militancy in the region was at its peak during 2007 and 2008. However,

The spy agencies claimed in the report that the Islamic fascisti are also being rehabilitated in the mentioned internment centres so that their allegiance with Pakistain and its constitution could be restored.

The court has directed a response from the petitioner's counsel and adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.

Syrian opposition opens first embassy, says world lets it down
A Syrian opposition bloc recognized by the Arab League as the sole representative for Syria opened its first embassy in Qatar on Wednesday in a diplomatic blow to President Bashar al-Assad.

But opposition leader Moaz Alkhatib, who took Syria's seat at an Arab summit in Doha on Tuesday, used the ribbon-cutting ceremony to voice his frustration with world powers for failing to do more to help in the two-year-old struggle to topple Assad.

"There is an international willingness for the revolution not to triumph," he told reporters at the embassy, which was festooned with balloons in the red, green, white and black of Syria's national flag.

Alkhatib, a Sunni Muslim cleric who resigned this week as leader of the Syrian National Coalition, but who is staying on as a caretaker, also alluded to internal differences plaguing the opposition umbrella group formed in Qatar in November.

"The only way to victory is unity," he declared.

Damascus raged against summit host Qatar for helping the opposition into Syria's seat at the League, while Russia and Iran also criticized the move to delegitimize Assad's rule.

Prominent Syria Dissidents Slam Regional Meddling, Brotherhood
[An Nahar] A group of prominent Syrian opposition members on Tuesday criticized the role of the Moslem Brüderbund
Their motto is "Islam is the answer," no matter what the question.
in the Syrian National Coalition and accused regional governments of "hegemony" over the body.

In a letter addressed to the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
, which is meeting in Doha, the group warned that the opposition was experiencing a crisis as a result.

"The crisis in the Syrian opposition is worsening... (because of) what is happening inside the National Coalition and the actions of those who dominate it," the letter said.

It criticized "the conflicts between the leaders of the coalition, the dictatorial control exercised by one of its currents over its decisions and actions, and the flagrant hegemony of diverse Arab and regional players."

Though the letter made no explicit reference to the Brotherhood, it came amid discontent in the opposition over the election of the first rebel prime minister, Ghassan Hitto, widely understood to have been the Brotherhood choice.

And it follows accusations that countries backing the rebels, including Qatar and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
, have directly interfered in the decisions of the Coalition, which is the main opposition grouping.

The letter urges the "abandoning of the project of an interim government, which has caused broad national division and has been strongly opposed by the leadership and fighters of the Free Syrian Army."

The signatories, who include several liberal activists such as Michel Kilo, Abdel Razzak Eid, Walid al-Bunni and Basma Kodmani, called instead for the creation of an executive body or consensus government chosen by a broad spectrum of the opposition.

The letter also urged "restructuring the Coalition to balance it and keep it beyond the control of any one party or current."

It seeks to reserve 25 seats for secular, liberal members and calls for increased representation of women.

Hitto, elected earlier this month, has been tasked with naming a government, which would be approved by the organization.

He has pledged to name a technocratic cabinet, without regard for political affiliation.

But within the opposition there are serious disagreements over the wisdom of forming an interim government, and discomfort over the election of Hitto by ballot rather than on the basis of a consensus decision.

"We are aware of the request," White House front man Jay Carney said.

"At this time, NATO does not intend to intervene militarily in Syria," Carney said.

"I think that a Patriot missile battery would follow the definition of military assistance," Carney said, adding that Patriot anti-missile batteries in Turkey were for self-defense only.

Carney added however that the White House was constantly reviewing its policies in Syria, which have seen Washington give hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid but stop short of providing "lethal" military help.

"We are still awaiting a decision from NATO on this matter," Khatib said.

#1  "Definition of military assistance" - so does alleged US training of Syrian rebels in Jordan, be it directly or via US-trained Jordanian proxies.

IIRC, as per FOX NEWS this AM the Bammer WH claims that any US aid to the Syruhn Rebs will only be "humanitarian".

"We are still awaiting a decision from NATO on this matter."

NATO's sole involvement in Syria's brutal civil war to date has been to position Patriot missile batteries along the Turkish border in order to prevent any air or missile launches from the Syrian side.

Khatib, who threw the opposition into disarray by announcing his resignation on Sunday, made it clear that he was still firmly at the helm of the Syrian National Coalition, the main Syrian opposition umbrella grouping.

Taking the seat reserved for the delegation head at the invitation of Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Khatib was flanked by other senior opposition figures including prime minister Ghassan Hitto.
