Afghanistan fighting the forces of devil and darkness: Abdullah
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
said Afghanistan is fighting the forces of devil and darkness as he insisted on increasing support to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).

In his speech during a conference on the Future of Police in Afghanistan, CEO Abdullah said Afghanistan is facing a fight that is against humanity.

Abdullah further added that the terrorist groups fighting in Afghanistan have no faith in peace and stability.

The CEO also emphasized to increase the number female service members among the Afghan police ranks, insisting that such a move could bring the communities closer to police.

He said the leadership of the Ministry of Interior and senior level commanders have been instructed to take extra measures to reach out to the police who are sacrificing their lives for the people of Afghanistan.

In other parts of his speech, Abdullah thanked the international community for their support to rebuild the Afghan police, specifically mentioning the EUPOL’s contribution.

According to Abdullah, the Afghan police is in a better shape today in terms of quantity and quality as he reaffirmed government’s commitment to take necessary measures in a bid to maintain a self reliant police force.

He said the government is committed to take necessary measures to bring reforms in police to help bring the police forces to their original service of protecting rule of law.

Sinai attacks decline as Egypt’s fight against IS yields results
[IsraelTimes] Through targeted bombings on Islamic State’s Jabal Hilal stronghold, Egyptian military deals strong blow to terror

There has been a steady and significant decline in terror attacks carried out by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in the Sinai Peninsula in recent months, according to both Egyptian and Israeli sources.

Though the Islamic State’s armed activities continue apace in the northeast triangle framed by the Israel, Gazoo and Egypt borders, there have been fewer terror attacks on the Egyptian army, with a smaller number of casualties than last year, and the attacks have been less ambitious than those IS carried out in 2014 and 2015, as a result of the group’s weakened force and diminished weapons supply.

The Egyptian military’s operations in the central Sinai Peninsula and a series of Arclight airstrikes in the Jabal Hilal region -- a terrorist-controlled area -- have dealt a powerful blow to IS’s military capabilities, the sources said.

For the past few years, Jabal Hilal has been the stronghold of the hard boy group in the peninsula, mostly due to its topography.

The region’s extensive cave system -- it is considered the "Tora Bora of the Sinai," an allusion to the rugged region of Afghanistan that Taliban and al-Qaeda gunnies made into a bastion against the United States -- has made it the preferred destination for IS, the current iteration of the Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis
...Supporters of Jerusalem, the current pen name of al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula...
group.

Three months ago, toward the end of May, the Egyptian military spokesperson, Col. Muhammad Samir announced the killings of "88 armed members of the jihadist group in central and northern Sinai."

May’s large-scale aerial campaign not only took out nearly 100 IS operatives, it also injured hundreds more, dozens of them seriously. In addition to the human casualties, the bombings destroyed the group’s weapons storage facilities and ammunition caches, which had been kept hidden for years.

Essentially, the "logistic front" of the Islamic State in Sinai was destroyed, the sources said.

Around the same time, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi also discussed the actions against IS, which focused on Jabal Hilal, an area that is seen as particularly problematic. According to Sissi, there had been a significant victory in the fight against terror. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
he clarified, the state of emergency for Egypt would continue.

Earlier this month, the Egyptian military announced another achievement, the execution of Abu Duaa al-Ansari, the presumed commander of the Islamic State in Sinai, formerly known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis.

According to the military’s statement, the series of bombings south of el-Arish -- the historic provincial capital of the Sinai -- in which al-Ansari was killed came as the result of precise intelligence. During the bombings, a number of weapons storehouses were destroyed and some 45 operatives were killed.

Throughout 2015, dozens of Egyptian soldiers were killed by IS, with the worst attack taking place during the month of Ramadan in simultaneous assaults on a number of Egyptian military outposts near the town of Sheikh Zuweid that left over 50 dead.

Since the July 1, 2015 attack, however, the Egyptian military’s intelligence has improved. In addition, security collaboration and cooperation with Israel has continued.

Recently, Egypt has made a number of significant gestures in the diplomatic realm, including a rare meet-up between its foreign minister and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that testify to the closeness of the two sides.

#1  A bit of history:

"August 23, 2012
The non-existence of the state’s presence in Sinai means the region has long been dominated by various rogue forces, from Islamist militants to human traffickers.
There are many reasons why the rise of religious extremism in Sinai seems a logical outcome or perhaps even an inevitability, prime among them being the absence of the state in all its forms. This has turned this part of Egypt into a fertile ground for any group that competes with the state over its sovereignty."

Egypt opens Gaza border crossing for Muslim pilgrimage
[Ynet] Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, says Egypt has opened its border crossing with the Gazoo Strip for three days, allowing hundreds of Moslem faithful to travel for a yearly pilgrimage.

Hesham Edwan, the director of the Rafah crossing, said Tuesday that nearly 2,500 people were expected to leave in the coming days.

Rafah is Gazoo's main gateway to the outside world. Egypt has kept Rafah largely sealed since 2013, when ties with Hamas worsened after the ouster of Egypt's elected Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Cairo accuses the Islamic holy warrior group, which rules Gazoo, of supporting Death Eaters in the Sinai Peninsula, allegations denied by Hamas.

The pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
is one of the five pillars of Islam and is made by around 3 million Moslems worldwide each year.

Have Egypt-Hamas relations reached point of no return?
[al-Monitor] Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-Egypt relations are hanging by a thread amid the instability and tension between them, which some fear could result in a complete severing of ties.

The latest flare ignited Aug. 22 when Al Jazeera broadcast a photo of Hamas members who had been kidnapped a year ago by unknown gunnies in the Sinai Peninsula after passing through the Rafah crossing.

Hamas said the men -- Yasser Zanoun, Hussein al-Zabda, Abdullah Abu al-Jabin and Abdel Dayem Abu Labda -- were traveling to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to seek medical treatment or to pursue their studies. Egypt claimed the men were members of Hamas' military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and were on their way to Iran for military training.

The photo shows two of the four men locked up, along with many others, at the headquarters of the Egyptian State Security Intelligence. In the photo, all the men were shown in their underwear and seemed to be in a miserable state. Some of them were emaciated.

Al Jazeera would not reveal the source of the photo, although Huffington Post Arabi cited its own anonymous source as saying the photo is a still from prison camera footage that Paleostinian leaders obtained a few months ago "through intermediaries." It appears the photo was leaked to Hamas, which eventually allowed Al Jazeera to publish it, perhaps in an effort to reignite the abduction issue because of pressure from families to get their sons released.

Al Jazeera released the photo just days after dozens of Paleostinians participated in an Aug. 18 protest in front of the Red Thingy headquarters in Gazoo to demand that Egypt reveal the fate of the four men. There has been no word since their abduction. The day before the photo was broadcast, Abu Obeida, front man for al-Qassam Brigades, announced the brigades have been following up on the case and making constant efforts to bring the men back.

Mohammad Abu Labda, a member of the Popular Assembly for Solidarity with the Paleostinians Kidnapped in Egypt, expressed that group's frustration with the lack of progress.

"A year after the abduction of our four youths while on their way to the Egyptian territories, we are still living on the hope that they are fine. We have asked Egypt to take action quickly to reveal their fate," he told Al-Monitor. Abu Labda is an uncle of one of the kidnapped men, Abdel Dayem Abu Labda.

Hamas front man and leader Salah Bardawil told Al-Monitor the young men had been kidnapped "in front of the Egyptian authorities in the security zone of the checkpoints of the Rafah crossing."

"Therefore, Egypt is held accountable, and it should reveal their detention place. But, so far, it has refused to disclose any information about their whereabouts and their fate," he added.

Hamas sources told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity, "Egypt is putting tough conditions on Hamas in return for revealing the fate of the kidnapped men. Egypt wants Hamas to cooperate with it to control the security situation in Sinai, but Hamas has repeatedly refused this demand because it does not want to meddle with the affairs of any Arab state, mainly Egypt."

UN envoy: Military escalation in Yemen is fueling extremists

murderous Moslem group.

Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that the two myrmidon groups "continue to wreak havoc in significant parts of Yemen."

He pointed to Monday’s suicide kaboom by ISIS in the southern city of Aden.

While the Yemeni army’s growing ability to confront murderous Moslem groups is encouraging, Cheikh Ahmed said "the absence of the state in many parts of Yemen, in addition to the chaos created by war, will continue to facilitate the expansion of these terrorist groups which represents a real threat to the region."

Saudi Arabia says Houthis will not be allowed to take over Yemen
[AlArabiya] Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said on Wednesday the Iranian-allied Houthi militias will not be allowed to take over Yemen, as he accused Iran of seeking to sow unrest around the region.

The head of a Houthi-backed ruling council pledged readiness on Monday to resume negotiations on ending Yemen’s war but reserved the right to resist attacks by the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government.

UN-sponsored talks to try to end 18 months of fighting collapsed in failure this month and the Houthi militias and allied forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh resumed shelling into neighboring Saudi Arabia.

The talks foundered after the Houthis and Saleh’s General People’s Congress (GPC) announced the formation of the 10-member governing council on Aug 6., ignoring a warning by UN Yemen envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed that such a move would violate UN Security Council resolutions on how to solve the conflict.

Speaking to Reuters in Beijing, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the ball was in the Houthis’ court as to whether peace talks resumed.

“What is certain, not questionable, certain, they will not be allowed to take over Yemen. Period. So the legitimate government will be defended,” al-Jubeir said.

“The chance they have is to enter the political process, reach an agreement ... for the benefit of all Yemenis including the Houthis,” he said.

Speaking earlier to students at a Beijing university, al-Jubeir lambasted Iran.

“We see Iran supporting Houthis in Yemen and trying to take over the government, supply weapons to the Houthis, smuggle explosives to Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia,” he said.

“We wish we could be as good neighbours like before the 1979 revolution,” al-Jubeir said.

“It’s up to Iran to mend its behaviour.”

, and more than half of those were foreigners, Interior Minister Efkan Ala said in remarks broadcast on Turkish television channels on Wednesday.

Thousands of imported muscle from countries including Turkey, Britannia, Europe and the United States have joined the Islamist hard boyz in their self-proclaimed caliphate in recent years, many of them passing through Turkey. Turkey has since launched a crackdown on the networks facilitating their passage.

Since launching the crackdown, Turkey has detained a total of 5,803 people, of which about 2,200 were foreigners, the minister said, without giving a precise period.

The Politics of ‘the Good’ and ‘the Bad’ Taliban
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Ever since President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has assumed office about two years ago, Afghan-Pak relations have witnessed many ups and downs. President Ghani in an exclusive interview with Pakistain’s famous Geo Television about a month ago tried to articulate his country’s case in the strongest possible terms. On this occasion, President Ghani’s message to the government of Pakistain was loud and clear: enough is enough and double standards are not acceptable.

Pakistain has consistently maintained claims of its sacrifices in the fight against terrorism in terms of human losses and financial resources. Afghanistan does recognize the loss of lives on the Pak side as well the sacrifices of its international partners in the fight against terrorism. Yet, its argument is why Pakistain continues to differentiate between the ’good’ and the ’bad’ Taliban. When Pakistain talks about its fight against the Taliban, it fails to clarify which category of the Taliban it is referring to; ’the good’ ones or ’the bad’ ones. It is no longer a hidden truth that Pakistain does fight the hard boyz that targets it, which it terms as the ’bad Taliban’. On the other hand, it provides sanctuaries to those conducting myrmidon operations in Afghanistan calling them as the ’good Taliban’. As President Ghani has repeatedly emphasized, unless all terrorist groups are dealt with in a similar manner, the sincerity of Pakistain’s so-called fight against terrorism will be looked at with mistrust.

issued a threat against his visit, a senior North Block official said on Wednesday.

While the government was still debating about Mr. Singh’s participation in the SAARC Interior Minister’s conference on August 3-4 in Islamabad, Hafiz Saeed’s open threat proved to be the catalyst. "Hafiz Saeed dared the Home Minister to visit Pakistain. We couldn’t have taken this lightly. He decided to go since not participating in the conference would have sent a wrong message that India cowed down under Hafiz Saeed’s threats," said the North Block official.

Saeed message
On August 1, Hafiz Saeed posted a video message and warned the Pakistain government of dire consequences if Mr. Singh visited Islamabad.

Saeed had said in the video message that Pakistain government should not host Mr. Singh as he was responsible for the killing of Kashmiris in wake of the protests that erupted in the valley after Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter on July 8.

"Even when the Home Minister reached Islamabad, on way to the hotel, we could see number of protesters on the road. The Pakistain government might not have orchestrated the protests but they were too close for comfort. Imagine, a terrorist outfit protesting with impunity in India during the visit of an international leader?" asked the official.

After returning from Pakistain, Mr. Singh had told the Parliament, "Keeping in mind the country's prestige, I did what I should have done. I have no complaints."

This is how Hawala money is pumped into Jammu and Kashmir
[ZEENEWS.INDIA] Various terrorist groups operating in Jammu and Kashmire receive funds through different Hawala channels. A report has now revealed how funds are pumped into the Valley.

As per the report of the Jammu and Kashmire government, at least six cases have been registered in this regard.

On Wednesday, a report in Oneindia said several lakhs of rupees are smuggled in Jammu and Kashmire in gas cylinders. Money is stitched to salwar kameez donned by women to deflect the attention.

The portal said: "The directive is issued in Pakistain to move money into Jammu and Kashmire. Pakistain then activates its sympathisers across the globe to start moving money into accounts controlled by the separatists. There have been instances when the money has moved in through a Hawala channel to Delhi and then the same is collected by a point man."

In April, Jammu and Kashmire BJP had raised concern over reported flow of Hawala money from Gulf countries into the Valley.

New affront to Islam
h/t Gates of Vienna
Murad Al-Sudani, the Registrar for the National Palestinian Committee for Education, Culture and Science, lashed out at the upcoming annual Jerusalem Wine Festival, which is set to have a branch at the upscale Mamilla (Alrov) open-air mall near the Old City.

Since the mall rests partly on an old Muslim cemetery called "Maman Allah;" Al-Sudani claims that the festival manifests an affront to Islam.

A new generation of jihadis awakens in Indonesia
[JAPANTIMES.CO.JP] During a May 2011 shootout, Indonesia’s counterterrorism forces killed the leader of a Death Eater group thought to be behind a series of failed bomb attempts around the city of Solo in Central Java.

The death of Team Hisbah founder Sigit Qurdowi caused the group to splinter. Some formed an anti-vice squad in the city; many others became associated with a former Solo resident called Bahrun Naim, who authorities believe is a leading Indonesian coordinator for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Now, five years later, Naim, based in the IS stronghold of Raqqa, Syria, is building an ever-more-sophisticated network of bandidos forces of Evil from his former hometown, according to police, self-proclaimed murderous Moslems and people who work with the bandidos forces of Evil in Solo.

Solo, which has a long history of schools and mosques associated with radical Islamists, is a breeding ground for Naim’s recruits, counterterrorism officials say, and many of his lieutenants in Indonesia have come from Team Hisbah.

As a result, authorities fear the risk of a major attack in Indonesia is growing.

Islamist militancy in the world’s most populous Moslem-majority nation has been contained since a crackdown on Jemaah Islamiyah -- al-Qaeda’s franchise in the region -- put hundreds of its leaders and followers behind bars in the mid-2000s.

But like al-Qaeda before it, IS is reviving a fragmented radical Islamist movement in Indonesia that has endured in various incarnations for the past century, authorities say.

Nearly $800,000 has been transferred from foreign countries to fund radical Islamist groups in Indonesia since 2014, officials from Indonesia’s financial transactions watchdog said at an international counterterrorism conference in Bali in mid-August. It wasn’t clear how much money has come from Naim, who police say is now Indonesia’s most-wanted Death Eater.

Rooters contacted a man identified as Naim last November on the Telegram app, using details provided by one of his acquaintances. In that exchange, Naim said IS had "enough men in Indonesia to carry out an action, more than enough support. Just waiting for the right trigger." Rooters could not independently verify the man’s identity or his assertions.

Amir Mahmud, a former Afghan-trained mujahedeen, started the Islamic State Supporters Forum in Solo -- a city also known as Surakarta -- in July 2014 to "accommodate the development" of a jihadi movement in Indonesia.

Around 2,000 people showed up to one of its first gatherings at the Baitul Makmur Mosque, where many backed an Islamist caliphate in the Middle East, he said.

"This is a spontaneous spiritual calling," said Mahmud, who is also an Islamic university lecturer. "Islamic State is a booming movement."

Mahmud said two of his sons left Indonesia to fight for IS in the Middle East, and one has been killed.

Indonesia does not prohibit citizens from supporting groups such as IS or fighting for them abroad. Police say they can arrest terrorism suspects only once they have committed a crime on Indonesian soil.

UN warns against Israel-Lebanon truce breakdown
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The UN Security Council warned Tuesday that violations of the cessation of hostilities agreement between Leb and Israel could lead to a new conflict "that none of the parties or the region can afford."

The council’s warning came in a resolution adopted unanimously Tuesday extending the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Leb that monitors the cessation of hostilities until Aug. 31, 2017. It maintained the mission’s ceiling at 15,000 troops, supported by international and local civilian staff.

The council expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
"at the limited progress made towards the establishment of a permanent cease-fire."

It urged all parties "to make every effort to ensure that the cessation of hostilities is sustained, exercise maximum calm and restraint and refrain from any action or rhetoric that could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities or destabilize the region."

A Security Council resolution ordering a cessation of hostilities ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah turbans in southern Leb in the summer of 2006. The fighting left some 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis dead, and ended in a stalemate.

The UN force, which has been in southern Leb since 1978, was expanded after the 2006 war so peacekeepers could deploy along the border with Israel to help Lebanese troops extend their authority into the south for the first time in decades.

The resolution adopted Tuesday condemned "in the strongest terms all attempts to threaten the security and stability of Leb." It underlined "the risk that violations of the cessation of hostilities could lead to a new conflict that none of the parties or the region can afford."

But while praising the efforts of Leb and Israel, the UN chief underscored "that calm should not be mistaken for progress" on implementing the 2006 resolution and others, UN front man Stephane Dujarric said. The 2006 resolution, among other things, call for all militias, including Hezbollah, to be disarmed -- a demand that has been ignored for 10 years.

"The violent and unstable regional context emphasizes the importance of tangible progress by the parties toward a permanent ceasefire, as envisaged in the resolution," as well as ensuring that the cessation of hostilities is sustained, Dujarric said.

Russia questions evidence of Syria chemical attacks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The UN Security Council failed to agree Tuesday on whether Syria merited sanctions over the use of chemical weapons, with Russia questioning the evidence from an independent commission that found government forces were behind at least two such attacks.

Council members met to discuss the findings of an international team of inspectors that determined that both the Syrian government and ISIS gunnies were responsible for chemical attacks carried out in 2014 and 2015.

But Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, whose country is a close ally of the Syrian government, said it was too early to consider implementing a September 2013 council resolution authorizing sanctions that can be militarily enforced for any use of chemical weapons in Syria.

"Clearly there is a smoking gun. We know that chlorine most likely has been used - that was already the finding of the fact finding mission before - but there are no fingerprints on the gun," Churkin said following the closed-door session.

"There is nobody to sanction in the report which has been issued," he said. "It contains no names, it contains no specifics. ... If we are to be professional, we need to question all the conclusions."

Churkin said, however, that he was pleased the report had confirmed the use of chemical weapons by ISIS.

Heading into the meeting, US Ambassador Samantha Power called the report "a landmark" and said she expected a Security Council resolution "soon."

"It is the first official independent confirmation of what many of us ... have presented substantial evidence of for a long time, and that is a pattern of chemical weapons use by the Syrian regime," Power said. "It is incumbent on the council to act swiftly to show ... we were serious about there being meaningful accountability."
