-Lurid Crime Tales-
More than 200 arrested for DC riots
(UPI) -- More than 200 people were arrested in Washington, D.C., Friday -- as well as dozens more across the United States -- following scattered protests against President Donald Trump that turned violent.

In the nation’s capital, authorities said at least 217 people were arrested and charged with rioting for disruptive conduct that included throwing objects, breaking windows and even setting a limousine on fire.

The demonstrations caused what police called "significant damage," and resulted in the injuries of six Washington, D.C., police officers. Three received head injuries after they were struck by thrown objects, Washington, D.C., Metro Police Chief Peter Newsham said late Friday. All of their injuries, though, are not life-threatening.

"Unfortunately, a small group of people have engaged in vandalism as well as violence against our law enforcement officers," Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters Friday evening. "This type of violence against people in Washington, D.C., will not be tolerated."
Update at 3:40 p.m. ET: The Daily Mail, of course, has photos.

#1  Today the big news is the pink pussy hat Women's march on Washington. Apparntly they have too many people to actually march anywhere, and their speakers are utterning inanities. Several of my women friends are there -- here's hoping they learn something useful from the fact that they were not only allowd to march, unmolested, but guarded by those working for the man they profess to fear even more than they hate him. But I am not sanguine, bright and insightful though my friends are outside of politics.

White House climate change webpage disappears after Trump's inauguration
The graft and grantwhoring party's over
Less than an hour after President Trump took the oath of office on Friday, the White House's webpage on climate change disappeared from the Executive Branch's main site, the latest sign that the new administration will divert resources – and attention – from the issue.

The removal of the page from the White House's website came around the same time the site and other Executive Branch digital platforms were overhauled to reflect the new administration. The Obama Administration's climate change page still exists, but was migrated to a National Archives website.
I have found a suitable replacement at this link.
Now there's a lovely thing, Besoeker. I second the motion.

#2  The team of the remaining Snope agrees with you, Glenmore, and lays it out here. But essentially the article is correct: these things are not priorities to the incoming administration, thank goodness, and those pages will not be reconstituted as they would have been under President Hillary C. It's just that the fact they are not there Right Now is not a signifier of future direction as such.

French far-right leader Le Pen calls on Europeans to 'wake up'
[Reuters] French far-right leader Marine Le Pen urged European voters to follow the example of Americans and the British and "wake up" in 2017 at a meeting of far-right leaders.

Le Pen told several hundred supporters in the German city of Koblenz that Britons' vote last year to leave the European Union would set in train a "domino effect".

"2016 was the year the Anglo-Saxon world woke up. I am sure 2017 will be the year the people of continental Europe wake up," she said to loud applause on Saturday.

Le Pen, head of the anti-EU, anti-immigrant National Front (FN) and seen by pollsters as highly likely to make a two-person runoff vote for the French presidency in May, has marked out Europe as a major plank in her programme.

The far-right leaders met under the slogan "Freedom for Europe" with the aim of strengthening ties between their parties, whose nationalist tendencies have hampered close collaboration in the past.

"The key factor that is going to set in course all the dominos of Europe is Brexit. A sovereign people chose ... to decide its destiny itself," Le Pen said.

Bloody Hoovers, why do they hate us ?
[Daily Mail] A housewife was found slumped over her vacuum cleaner after mysteriously suffering an anaphylactic shock and dying. Susan Mullins was discovered lying face-down having collapsed suddenly while doing housework, an inquest heard.

Scientists were unable to find the cause of the fatal anaphylactic shock which caused a dramatic fall in Mrs Mullins' blood pressure. An inquest into her death heard that the tragic mother's body was found lying face-down over her Hoover at her home near Reading, Berkshire, on September 13.

Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford said that there was no explanation for her 'sudden collapse which was because of the use of the Hoover at the time'. He read a statement from Mrs Mullins' close friend who was the first person to find her at her home.

Christine Cooper was among more than half a dozen family members who attended the inquest and told Mr Bedford that mystery had also surrounded the death of Mrs Mullins' younger sister.

Ms Cooper desperately gave her friend CPR until paramedics arrived after she used a spare key to enter her home when there was no response to knocks on the door. The pair had planned to go shopping but there was no answer at Mrs Mullins' door in Heathfield in Mortimer Common.

'I could tell immediately that she was not breathing and called an ambulance,' Ms Cooper said in the statement. She took instructions from a 999 call handler as she tried to revive her friend but paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene and called the police.

#4  Going back to the article one learns:

The inquest heard that Mrs Mullins, who had a life-limiting disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and heart and lung health problems, had suffered from adverse side-effects from medication she had taken months before her death.

The coroner, however, ruled out the possibility that it could have caused her death after her GP at Mortimer Surgery reported that the 'puffiness' in her eyes decreased and that she was taken off the medication.

SMA is a very rare degenerative condition that presents as chronic fatigue, and I believe was completely untreatable until recently. The only medication approved by the FDA has a high level of adverse side effects, and likely, like hormonal birth control and antidepression medications, causes problems when one stops taking it as well as when one is on the stuff. But the FDA only approved me the stuff in December, so that information has not yet appeared. Whether the National Health Service earlier approved medications, or whether the lady in question was participating in a clinical trial, is not mentioned inthe article.

And the coroner will not have wanted to accuse the doctor of manslaughter-by-neglect without hard data and precedents. That would impugn the entire NHS, the one thing all agree makes Britain British, and is another reason to avoid complete government ownership of health care delivery.
Posted by: trailing wife || 01/21/2017 14:53 Comments || Top||

#5  Sorry. SMA presents as chronic fatigue in the adult-onset types. In infants it presents as failure to progress along the stages of development. The Daily Mail had an article a few days ago about a toddler who was finally diagnosed at age four; the NHS pediatrician and specialists the parents had consulted previously diagnosed her as a "lazy baby" who just felt no need to lift her head, roll over or crawl.! until the final specialist ran the test that revealed the true cause.

#8  Truly, gorb. I have a girlfriend who possibly has the rarest of the four types, but remains undiagnosed as idiopathic (no known cause) chronic fatigue for a quarter century. Because she has no diagnosis, she cannot sign up for Social Security disability, and because she looks perfectly healthy, even doctors accuse her of shamming.

I look healthy, too, but at least I have a diagnosis and a husband who didn't bolt when it became clear this was not a short term situation.

What kind of man is Bill Clinton? He's just like any other man, only more so.
[Daily Mail] It was not the day his wife would become president after all, but it seems Bill Clinton still plenty enjoyed himself at the inauguration.

The former president was captured on camera supposedly ogling Ivanka Trump as she arrived at ceremony on Friday. Clinton seemed to bite down on his lip with approval and then muttered something as he intently watched from the podium at the Capitol.

But it wasn’t just the cameras who caught Bill. What was Bill Clinton staring at at Trump's inauguration?

Donald Trump please help make South Africa great again VIDEO
[SA Today] On the day of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States of America, South Africans held a pro-demonstration calling on the new president to help the white minority of South Africa.

At the main entrance of the US Embassy in Pretoria around 13:00, the National Conservative Party (NCP) held a peaceful demonstration calling for assistance in South Africa. The leader of the NCP, Willie Cloete, Wessel Basson the Deputy Leader, Marius Coertze the Chancellor, Trevor Stumke, the secretary and Barend Daubern the youth Leader were all present during the demonstration. Holding posters calling on Trump to make South Africa great again and build an ANC wall, the demonstrators ask for Trump to consider the plea of the white minority who are oppressed.

On a lighter note, some of the posters said “ It’s Trump’s Time and “America had Obama, we still have Zuma” and “Trump you can govern SA anytime”. Seriously the white minority need assistance and since the affirmative action policies, brutal farm murders, and other horrific incidents have created widespread disaster for the white people, the demonstration was all about getting support.

#1  Steve Hofmeyr - Ons Sal Dit Oorleef (We shall this survive)

”There’s a country and a people in a language dubbed. With prayers and gunpowder and blood bought What again and again his knee should seek.

We will survive …

From the jaws of masses by the fire on our site
Allow the angels to our women and children who die. Each memorial statue to those who lived

We will survive …

My heart beat Toktokkie where he arrived for my people. Before the cannon or khaki kaffir’s dagger. It does not matter where we contend.

We will survive …

I lift my eyes to the mountains
Where will my help come yet to come
Oh my God, your words are my woven

We will survive …

Today I stand in your place, friend

It depends on the matter quiet as far as I can see. But the ghosts of yesterday morning will revive.

We will survive."

Science & Technology
Robot skin senses warm bodies like a snake locating nearby prey
[New Scientist] A heat-sensing film could let robots detect when humans are around, like pit vipers hunting out warm-blooded prey.

The flexible, transparent coating is made of pectin, a low-cost plant material used to set jam. Unlike conventional electronics, it relies on currents of ions rather than electrons to detect temperature variations ‐ just like natural membranes used by the snakes.

The film can sense temperature changes as small as 10 millikelvin, which is twice as sensitive as human skin. It can detect a warm body the size of a rabbit from a metre away, something the researchers tested by microwaving a teddy bear and setting it at different distances from the film. Changes in temperature cause the film’s resistance to vary, which is picked up by electrodes along the edges and transmitted to a computer.

Applying it over a robot’s entire body could provide 360° thermal sensing, says Raffaele Di Giacomo at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, who led the research. That could help machines navigate crowded areas without hitting people, or help search and rescue robots locate humans in rubble or smoke-filled rooms. It could also help them to avoid damage and be more helpful to people. A robot assistant might need to know if a cup of tea is too hot to hand over, for example.

For Di Giacomo, helping robots learn about their environment is key. "The most important thing about combining AI and humanoid robots is that this AI needs to be shaped by its senses like we are," he says. "You need to provide full sensory feedback so the AI can build up a picture of the world."

#2  Don't see why this couldn't be used as clothing for people too. I have long noted that I could "feel" warmth given off by other people a few feet away, with my eyes closed. Similar to how most anyone can "feel" a hot teakettle on the palm of their outstretched hand from 6-12 inches away. Some electronic modification would probably be needed for best effect.

Trump signs ObamaCare executive order (Video)
[The Hill] President Trump on Friday signed an executive order directing federal agencies to "ease the burden of ObamaCare."

Trump signed the order in front of reporters at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, one of his first official acts as president.

The order did not direct any specific actions, instead giving broad authority to the Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies to take actions available to them under the law to ease regulatory requirements from ObamaCare.

It pushes agencies to target provisions that impose a "fiscal burden" on a state or a "cost" or "regulatory burden" on individuals or businesses.

Missouri House Passes Right to Work - Third state to take up legislation in 2017
[Free Beacon] Missouri is one of three states to take up right to work in as many weeks after its House of Representatives passed legislation on Thursday.

The Republican-controlled House voted 100-59 to end coercive unionism. The bill would outlaw the practice of paying union dues or fees as a condition of employment. Rep. Holly Rehder, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, said that the bill would help attract jobs to rural areas, which have lagged behind the state’s cities in employment.

Firet reduce the power and purse of the unions altogether so they become considerably less able to support their public sector brothers, then go after the public sector unions. There are very few with Governor Scott Walker's abilities, as Ohio's John Kasich proved when he was unsuccessful in fighting Ohio's unions. Here's hoping he tries again soon... and comes to appreciate President Trump's support in the effort, as opposed to his predecessor's active opposition.

Top ‘Brexit' Leader Nigel Farage Joins Fox News
[Free Beacon] Fox News announced on Friday that it has hired Nigel Farage, the former head of the United Kingdom’s Independence Party and a leader of the "Brexit" movement, to serve as a paid contributor for the news network.

Farage was an early supporter of Britain leaving the European Union, arguing that the British people had to retake control of their country. The campaign succeeded in June 2016, when U.K. citizens voted to withdraw from the EU through a referendum.

Farage resigned from his leadership position a few weeks following the referendum vote and then started hosting his own radio program in the U.K.

In addition to his radio program, Farage has been involved in American politics by vocally supporting President Donald Trump, defending then-candidate Trump throughout his campaign.

Fox News made the hiring announcement as Trump was preparing to walk out of the U.S. Capitol building to be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, Politico reported.

Farage’s contract says that he will be a contributor on both the Fox News and Fox Business networks. He will join the channels effective immediately.

The Marines have Landed - Generals Mattis and Kelley sworn into office
[Free Beacon] Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly were sworn into office Friday evening to serve in President Trump’s administration.

Before the inaugural balls, Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office to the two retired Marine Corps generals. Both Mattis and Kelly were confirmed by the Senate hours earlier on Friday.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer released pictures on Twitter of President Donald Trump signing documents allowing Mattis and Kelly to be sworn in, as well as an executive order on Obamacare and a picture of Pence swearing in Mattis. The two received strong bipartisan support during their confirmations.

Kelly’s wife held the Bible for him while he took his oath, and another woman held the Bible for Mattis, who is a lifelong bachelor. Kelly also did the sign of the cross after finishing his oath.

Obama plans to remain in political fray, stay in D.C.
[Wash Times] As President Obama prepares to fly off into history at noon Friday, he won’t be receding as far from the spotlight as most former presidents, with plans to live in Washington and throw himself into a campaign to give Democrats more clout in reshaping congressional districts.

He also hasn’t promised to stay out of President Trump’s hair. Indeed, the departing president with a flair for the long good-bye sent an email to supporters Thursday urging them to stay engaged in "the joyous work of citizenship."

"I’ll be right there with you every step of the way," Mr. Obama said.

To many, Mr. Obama’s claim that he longs for some peace and quiet in retirement is ringing hollow.

"Clearly, there’s a lot of reluctance to leave," said Richard Benedetto, a political science professor at American University and a former White House reporter. "He wants to stay on the scene."

Massive, massive fucking mistake, jug ears. The first time you pull that stunt, Trump and his team will go on the offensive and make sure every subsequent petulant, unsolicited outburst of yours will be defending / reacting to what Trump said instead of your 'message' getting through first. You'll be playing right into his hands, you stupid bastard. Your problem is your massively overinflated, 100% unjustified ego and sense of self-importance not even considering this angle. You do so at your own peril and the massive ridicule you are about to inflict on yourself and your family. Have at it, dickhead - I'm buying some popcorn!

Only one of 99 voted against Gen. Jim Mattis' confirmation as Defense Sec.
[Daily Caller] Only one senator voted "no" on the confirmation of Gen. James Mattis as the next secretary of defense.

The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed the popular retired Marine Corps general Friday, following the inauguration of Donald Trump as president, 98-1. New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was the sole no vote.

Mattis is the first member of Trump’s cabinet to be confirmed. His approval process required the extra step of a special waiver from Congress because he has not been out of the military for the required seven years.

Gillibrand criticized Trump’s decision to nominate the popular general early on over concerns about maintaining civilian control of the military, and her spokesman Marc Brumer told The Daily Caller News Foundation Friday those concerns were behind her no vote. "She believes civilian control of the military is fundamental," he said.

Winston Churchill returns to Oval Office as Kenyan master departs
[Wash Times] Winston Churchill is back in the Oval Office.

On his first day in office, President Trump brought back a bust of the legendary British prime minister to the West Wing, after President Obama had removed it. Mr. Obama replaced it with a bust of Martin Luther King Jr.

Reporters who were summoned to the Oval Office Friday night to witness Mr. Trump signing an executive order noticed the Churchill bust had been returned to the Oval Office.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson had speculated that Mr. Obama removed Churchill’s bust in part because he is "part-Kenyan," and was motivated by anti-colonial feelings. Mr. Obama refuted that, saying he had moved the bust to a place of prominence in his private office in the White House residence.

"I love Winston Churchill, I love the guy," Mr. Obama said.

Mr. Trump did more redecorating, replacing Mr. Obama’s crimson drapes in the Oval Office with gold ones.

#1  Why Churchill was removed from the Oval Office in the first place. Could this be the reason ?

On Islam, Churchill wrote (The River War, page 249), “is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog.”

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedanism law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property–either as a child, a wife, or a concubine — must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Donald Trump completes hostile takeover of Washington, puts both parties on notice
h/t Instapundit
President Trump completed his hostile takeover of the Republican Party last July, and on Friday he completed his hostile, if temporary, takeover of Washington.

In some significant ways, Trump is more like a corporate raider of the 1980s, when he came of age, than a typical politician of 2017. Thirty years ago, Gordon Gekko might have been more likely to deliver the speech that the billionaire businessman did today than Ronald Reagan.

No president has ever before referred to "the establishment" in his inaugural address nor declared that every country in the world ought to pursue its own self-interest. But the guy who ended the Bush dynasty and then vanquished the Clinton machine, in a period of 17 months, put "the establishment" of both parties on notice once more.
I get this picture of somebody who was quietly seething for decades and came to boil during Obama years. And found out that a lot of other people came to boil as well.

Perhaps DJT took at look at tiny Switzerland (in the middle of turbulent and war torn Europe) and began wondering just how they've stayed out of foreign entanglements and senseless confilcts for nearly 700 years.

Anyone besides me fail to hear anything about DJT's ambassadorial appointments? I suspect it's because they are extremely low on his priority (things needing done) list, where they rightfully belong. He owes no favours to anyone, so he can act on these at his leisure.

Government
Trump announces regulatory freeze in first executive orders
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] President Trump took a series of executive actions minutes after the inaugural parade concluded Friday evening, one of which was to place a regulatory freeze on all federal agencies until his administration provides further notice.

"The Trump administration will send a letter to all executive agencies tonight to immediately abide by a regulatory freeze," White House press secretary Sean Spicer told news hounds around 7:15 p.m. ET.

Reducing the regulatory burden on American industries was a central component of Trump's populist campaign, and Friday's executive order suggests the new Republican president is serious about taking steps to fulfill that promise during the first few days of his administration.

Trump also issued a memo to all agencies requesting that they begin to "ease the burden of Obamacare
... aka the Affordable Care Act, an ineptly designed and worse executed piece of legislation designed to bring 17 percent of the U.S. economy under the direct control of the government. The previous iteration, known as Hillarycare, was laughed out of Washington. This stinker was passed on a party-line vote without being read...
as we transition from repeal to replace," Spicer said. He declined to provide specifics on what various agencies might do in response to the president's directive.

In addition to the executive orders, Trump issued two commission orders for Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. Both Cabinet appointees were approved by the Senate Friday afternoon and were sworn into office by Vice President Mike Pence before Trump departs for a trio of celebratory balls with First Lady Melania.

Arabia
Yemeni defectors die in Nihm
Aden- Jeddah- Yemeni former National Guard commanders, now defectors serving a guerrilla war seeking to override the constitutionally elected government, have reportedly been killed, Yemen-based sources said.

The commanders occupied high-end posts in leading the armed putsch staged by Iran-aligned Houthi militias and loyalists siding with ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Most of the commanders were killed in clashes taking place in Sana’a’s largest district, Nihm.

Pro-government and government forces seized four Zilzal-2 ballistic missiles after capturing Mount Doh in Nihm District, northeastern Sana’a governorate on January 17.

Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi’s government forces reportedly killed the commander of the Fourth Republican Guard Brigade and his Chief of Staff during the attack. The Republican Guard is loyal to Saleh, currently allied with Houthis looking to overthrow Hadi’s government.

Among killed coup leaders were Colonel Mohammed Saleh Naji al Hadri and a number of his companions that were taken down by an Arab Coalition-led air strike in the Saada province.

Putschist Colonel Hamoud Saleh Azman, commander of the Third Battalion of coup special ops was also killed. The sources also confirmed the death of Khaled Yahia Madani, brother in law to Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al Houthi, in Nihm.

On another scope, informed sources said that putschists have blocked the clearance of government-dispensed salaries for state employees in insurgency-held areas.

Houthis enforced a series of measurements cutting off funds sent by the legitimate government. Insurgency leaders ordered state employees to withhold data from the finance ministry, curbing paydays, sources based in insurgency areas told Asharq Al-Awsat.

A document signed by Yahia Badreddin al-Houthi, assigned coup political leader, banned providing the Aden-based Ministry of Finance with any documents or information which would assist the legitimate government with dispensing payment of salaries approved by the national Council of Ministers.

The Grand Turk
A strong right-wing alliance on its way in Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] On the same day, Jan. 18, social democratic main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu visited MHP leader Devlet Bahceli to (in vain) "remind him once again" that the presidential model would lead to "one-man rule in a party-state" Bahceli had already stated before the meeting that he had said everything he needed to, and would remain in favor of the shift.

The next day, Yildirim added to his remarks on bringing MHP ministers into the cabinet, saying that in the referendum there would be the AK Parti and the MHP on one side for a "stronger The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
under the presidential system," while on the other side there would be the CHP and the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). That is a smart move to give a subliminal message to voters, since the AK Parti denounces the HDP as the legal extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a terrorist organization by law, despite the fact that the objections of the CHP and the HDP against the presidential system differ in motivation, reasoning and policy.

You can read more from Gizem Karakus’s story in today’s Hurriyet Daily News about how the AK Parti has been planning to carry out a joint referendum campaign with the MHP.

What Prime Minister Yildirim is pointing to could be the largest front in Turkey’s political system, bringing Islamist, conservative, Turkish nationalist, and center-right voters under one roof.

Turkey has experienced a number of right-wing coalitions in the past, notably the three-party "Nationalist Front" coalitions in the second half of the 1970s between center-right, Islamist and Turkish nationalist parties. However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
no such coalition was seen after the 1980 military coup. There was only a brief center-right-Islamist coalition in 1996-97 called "Refah-Yol," which was brought to an end with resignations due to pressure from the military and judicial establishment of the time, labelled the "post-modern coup."

If what Yildirim is pointing to actually happens, an unnamed coalition will be formed incorporating almost all of Turkey’s right-wing tendencies, in the still heated post-July 2016 coup attempt political atmosphere.

The rise of the right in such a form paralels the rise of the right in Europe and elswhere, in line with global tendencies. It also opens up new windows for a new set of political uncertainities.

-Land of the Free
This Week in Guns, January 21st, 2017

Happy Freedom Day +1!

Now that Donald Trump has been sworn in as President of the United States, chatter will likely increase along with a push for a national reciprocity law. The law has been the centerpiece of the National Rifle Association's legislative agenda, but there are problems.

One of the problems is the potential imposition of nationwide standards by Congress for carrying a concealed weapon. I have been reading arguments with supporters of the law that training should be required to concealed carry.

I think the law is a potential minefield legally. Challenges to the law would put the Heller decision in play again, wanted by the left, only this time as a cage match. Something would emerge when the smoke clears, but I am willing to bet it would not be Heller.

It would be a good thing to require all states to recognize carry permits from other states, but if Congress is going to do that, why not go all in? Require Constitutional carry, permitless carry, which should be the law of the land in any case. Such an imposition would be Constitutional and proper in a free society.

The US Army has selected the Sig Sauer P320 as its main service sidearm. One of the advantages, it is said, of the new selectee is that the weapon can be converted between 9mm, .357 Sig and .40 S&W cartridges, presumably with a change of barrels, bolts and magazines.

You can accurize the Mosin Nagant rifle to one minute of paper plate at 100 yards now. I can hardly wait.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition were steady. Prices for rifle ammunition were mostly steady.

I added one new class of pistol ammunition, .38 Special, and three new rifle rounds, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum

Prices for used pistols were lower across the board. Prices for used rifles were mixed.

New Lows:

None.

#1  The US Army has selected the Sig Sauer P320 as its main service sidearm.

#3  One of the problems is the potential imposition of nationwide standards by Congress for carrying a concealed weapon.

It's not a theoretical problem. That's the practical application of all federal legislation. Remember, a law enacted can always be changed by a future Congress - often for the worse. There is no need for more federal restrictions. If your traveling to other states take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with their laws. If you don't like said laws you can choose not to go there. I think they call it Federalism?

Hamas operative killed in Gaza tunnel collapse
[IsraelTimes] A Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", operative was killed as a tunnel collapsed in the southern Gazoo Strip on Friday, his Islamist movement which rules the Paleostinian territory said.

It said Yussef al-Agha died in Khan Yunis in the collapse of a "resistance tunnel," the type dug for attacks against Israel.

Last year, 22 members of Hamas’s armed wing were killed "preparing equipment," the majority in a string of tunnel collapses, the group said last month.

Rocket attacks target police, AK Party HQs in Istanbul
Rocket attacks hit Istanbul police station and ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's local headquarters on Friday, Anadolu reported. Unidentified assailants first targeted police headquarters and hours later a second attack hit AK Party’s provincial headquarters.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said on Twitter that no one was hurt at the police HQ attack and an operation was under way to catch the attackers.
Probably not ISIS or the PKK then. Unhappy Gulenists, perhaps?
AK Party Provincial head Selim Temurci said on Twitter that there were no injuries in the attack on the party's office. Later, speaking to reporters, Temurci said the rocket pierced the wall of the building but did not explode, and pointed to the involvement of ultra-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).

He said two assailants were involved in the attack.

Earlier, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that terror groups carried out the attack on Istanbul police headquarters.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Police: Arrested activist featured in Project Veritas inauguration video
[WASHINGTONTIMES] DisruptJ20 protesters dismissed as a joke an undercover Project Veritas video showing activists supposedly planning to shut down Thursday night’s DeploraBall by setting off smoke bombs or the sprinkler system -- but D.C. police weren’t buying it.

The 34-year-old man jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
Thursday night for conspiracy to commit assault at the event was among the activists featured in the undercover video released this week, according to court documents made public on Friday.

Scott Ryan Charney was one of the three men caught on camera discussing plans to set off fire alarms and spray Butyric acid -- an ingredient commonly used in stink bombs -- at the National Press Club, where the party for Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
supporters was held Thursday night. In the Project Veritas video, Mr. Charney is identified as Scott Green, the documents state.

Project Veritas this week publicly released an undercover video taken Dec. 18 that shows three men associated with the D.C. Antifascist Coalition and DisruptJ20 group discussing plans to disrupt the DeploraBall.

After the release of the video, DisruptJ20 organizers said the activists in the undercover video figured out the Project Veritas investigator was a plant and "gave him false information about ... what they felt was the most humorous red herring available: a false plot to use stink bombs at an event called the Deploraball with the so-called ’Alt-Right.’"

Court documents state that police relied on the video turned over to Sherlocks on Tuesday by the unidentified witness as well as emails sent between protest organizers when they filed the criminal charge against Mr. Charney. The court documents do not indicate how the emails were obtained, but state that Mr. Charney wrote to several individuals that he had conducted reconnaissance at the National Press Club, and believed the the group "would be able to accomplish their objective ’with no negative consequences for our side, nor any collateral damage.’"

Mr. Charney "went on to further discuss that more people would be needed inside the building to carry out their plans," according to the court documents. The email message states that the group would further discuss the plans in person.

Police were looking for the two other men, identified as Luke Kuhn and Colin Dunn in the video, but officials said they have not been taken into custody.

Mr. Charney was arraigned on the charges in D.C. Superior Court Friday, as President Trump was being sworn into office.

He pled not guilty to the misdemeanor charge and was released from custody on the condition he stay away from the inauguration zone throughout the rest of the weekend.

Attorney Elise Haldane said Friday that her client had pled not guilty and had no further comment about the charges.

Austrian police arrest 'terror' suspect planning attack
[Al Jazeera] Austrian authorities say they have jugged
Please don't kill me!
an 18-year-old man suspected of planning a ’bomb’ attack in Vienna.

"Our police forces managed in quick time to arrest a suspect and so prevent a potential terror attack in the federal capital Vienna," Austria's interior minister Wolfgang Sobotka said on Friday, shortly after police in the capital announced the arrest.

"The suspect is an Austrian citizen with a migration background who is 18 years old," Sobotka told a news conference. He said that possible indications that he may be an Islamic turban were being looked into.

"There are individual indications (of extremism) that we have to investigate. There is one contact that is pretty clear and there are several indications that will be looked at intensively," Sobotka said.

Earlier, police front man Thomas Keiblinger told the Austria Press Agency that the man had been under observation after authorities received a tip from a "foreign intelligence service," and was arrested on Friday afternoon in a Vienna apartment by a SWAT team.

"The man has been in jug... There are still lots of things to clear up," Keiblinger told the Austria Press Agency.

Austria's Kronen Zeitung said the tip received had been that "a group of Albanian Islamic turbans" were planning an attack in Vienna between January 15 and January 30.

Police issued a public warning for people to be on the lookout at crowded public places and to inform police if they see any suspicious objects. Police also increased the number of officers on the street.

Austria has been spared in the string of attacks by Islamists suffered by other European countries but has increased security measures.
Deutsche Welle adds:
The suspect, who travelled to Austria on Friday, was monitored and incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
in an apartment in Vienna by the country's anti-terror unit Cobra on Friday afternoon, Kieblinger said.

Austrian newspaper "Kronenzeitung" also reported that the man wanted to carry out a kaboom in the second half of January. The suspect - allegedly a member of the so-called "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. police did not confirm the claim.

#1  From The Times of Israel, action, but nothing yet new:

Austrian police raided several addresses early Saturday as they grilled a suspected Islamic extremist thought to have been planning an attack, authorities said.

“There were several raids on homes in Vienna and Lower Austria (state),” interior ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck told AFP.

“Material recovered in these searches is now being evaluated… So far there has only been one arrest, the one which took place yesterday (Friday),” he said.

The 18-year-old man arrested on Friday evening in Vienna was meanwhile being questioned, Konrad Kogler, national security chief, said on public radio.

Austria’s interior minister had said Friday that the man was an Austrian citizen from the Albanian minority.

ISIS destroys antiquities in Palmyra
Of course they do.
[al-Manar] Terrorists of the Takfiri ISIL group have demolished two more treasured monuments in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra a month after recapturing it from government forces, the antiquities chief said Friday.

“Local sources told us that 10 days ago Daesh destroyed the tetrapylon,” a 16 columned structure that marked one end of the ancient city’s colonnade, Maamoun Abdulkarim told AFP using an Arabic acronym for ISIL.

“Yesterday (Thursday), we received satellite photographs from our colleagues at Boston University showing damage to the facade of the Roman amphitheatre,” he added.

Before being forced out of Palmyra in a Russian-backed offensive in March last year, ISIL carried out a campaign of destruction at the city’s UNESCO-listed world heritage site, razing treasured temples and tower tombs.

The tetrapylon, built during the rule of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd Century AD, consisted of four sets of four pillars each supporting massive stone cornices.

It was a type of monument often constructed by the Romans to mark key crossroads but that at Palmyra was regarded as one of the greatest.

The monument had suffered considerable damage over the centuries and only one of the 16 pillars was still standing in its original Egyptian pink granite. The rest were cement replicas erected by the antiquities department in 1963.

The Roman amphitheatre dates to the 1st Century AD. During its first occupation of the city between May 2015 and March last year, IS notoriously used it as a venue of public executions and one of its walls was riddled with bullet holes.

“From the first day, I was bracing myself for a terrible outcome,” Abdulkarim said.

“We had already witnessed the terror of the first occupation and frankly I had never thought that the city would be occupied for a second time.

“The battle for Palmyra is cultural not political. I have never understood how the international community and the main players in the Syria conflict could accept the fall of Palmyra.”

India-Pakistan
Ominous signs
[NATION.PK] Dissent, criticism, difference of opinion, and activism are critical for a living society, and central to a robust democracy. It appears, however, that some state organs or some actors in the country wish to stem these in their myopic drive to steer Pakistain into ruin.

The sudden spurt of blasphemy allegations and accusations of being "anti-Islam" directed at some of the missing activists also poses a perilous situation for them even if they are recovered, since the mere suspicion of blasphemy is enough to continually and permanently endanger an individual’s life in Pakistain.

It is still hoped that the activists will be recovered safe and sound, however, even if they return, the climate of fear and intimidation engendered by their disappearances will remain. The message of these disappearances is hard to miss: quieten or be silenced.

A strongly-worded editorial in Dawn brought to light an important assumption and accusation operating in this entire issue: "The sanitised language -- ’missing persons’, ’the disappeared’, etc -- cannot hide an ugly truth: the state of Pakistain continues to be suspected of involvement in the disappearance and illegal detentions of a range of private citizens."

The matter of "disappeared" and "missing" persons began in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, and today it has reached the capital. There is no escape for the state from this, for it is either complicit or it is incompetent. And for the rest of the country, these are ominous signs.

Lebanon: 2 Rockets Hit al-Nabi Othman, Army Bombs Militant Posts
[AnNahar] Two rockets landed Friday in the heights of the northern Bekaa town of al-Nabi Othman, causing no casualties, state-run National News Agency reported.

The rockets were fired by turbans positioned in the outskirts of the northern Bekaa border town of Arsal, NNA said.

The attack prompted the army to fire heavy artillery and multiple rocket launchers at the posts of the Lion of Islams, the agency added.

A similar rocket attack took place on Wednesday when al-Nabi Othman's plain was struck by a projectile also fired from Arsal's outskirts.

The Beatings Will Continue: Iraqi Edition

More executions in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The Islamic State has released a new video showing members shooting and beheading individuals, some of whom are believed to be security agents, to death in Kirkuk over “treason” and collaboration with security forces.

The first part of the video, presumably filmed somewhere this week, shows a masked militant with a knife declaring the death sentence of two whom he said “agreed to be stooges for crusaders” as he put it, saying their execution was to make them “an example”.

The pair was laid to the ground, tied from the back, had the throats cut and left to bleed. A crowd, which apparently included children, cheered.

A similar style of the execution was adopted with three others who appeared in the following scene of the graphic video, which was also preceded by a threatening speech by a militant.

Islamic State beheading an individual in Kirkuk over treason.
Another segment of the video showed a militant questioning a young boy who admitted collaboration with security forces by providing information about the group’s weaponry, and confessed to taking snaps of its locations. He is shown kneeling on the debris of a house and shot in the head from the back by one militant.

A last part shows two others shot in the back head by masked militants.

Since it occupied large areas of Iraq in 2014, Islamic State has posted videos of heinous executions of civilians, security personnel, and foreign workers over multiple charges. Some of the executions were even carried out by little children.

Elder, grandson dies in drone attack in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An Iraqi elder and his grandson were killed in western Mosul in an explosion caused by a bomb dropped from an Islamic State-guided drone, a local source said Friday.

The septuagenarian and his grandson were passing through Bab al-Toub region in western Mosul when a drone flown by the extremist group dropped a bomb in the area, the source told Alsumaria News, adding that several civilians had died and were wounded as drones dropped small bombs on residential areas.

Islamic State is still holding most of western Mosul as Iraqi forces are a few districts away from declaring the eastern region free from the extremist group.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a popular militias and a US-led military coalition, have entered a third month of military operations to retake the city, claiming to have killed more than 3000 militants since then. Militants have reportedly begun to flee the eastern side to the west.

The conflict in Mosul has forced at least 178.000 to leave their homes to refugee camps since the launch of operations, but IS has targeted civilians attempting to flee areas it has held since its emergence in 2014. The United Nations fears operations will displace at least one million people.

Islamic State training camp discovered west of Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A major Islamic State training camp had been discovered in western Anbar during brief Iraqi army operations targeting the extremist group’s strongholds, said a statement by the defense ministry on Friday.

The camp was discovered during operations to recapture al-Sakra and al-Zawiya regions west of the province, said the statement, which revealed that all the contents of that facility were set to fire by Iraqi troops.

The statement added that most of Islamic State attacks at the province’s town of Haditha launched from that camp which, it said, was located in a rugged terrain. It added that the forces had managed to erect barracks to protect the area from any attack.

Preparations are underway for next operations targeting Islamic State hideouts in Annah and Rawa, according to the statement.

The Iraqi army command in Anbar declared on the 5th of January the start of operations to retake western Anbar regions, close to the borders with Syria, from militants. The operations lasted for a few days, recapturing a few villages, before halting again. Observes see confusion regarding readiness to launch operations in the province, pointing out to the fact that the start of the security offensive was not officially declared by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi as was the case with Mosul, where government forces have entered a third month of battles with the group.

Security sources said a week earlier that the government had decided to halt battles in Anbar until the end of operations in Mosul. The replacement of the army’s operations commander in Anbar, Ismail al-Mahallawi, cast more doubts on the reason behind the halt.

U.S. and Iraqi fighter jets, however, have carried out occasional airstrikes on Islamic State locations in western Anbar.

's new president has said that Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the country for 22 years and refused for weeks to step down after losing the recent election, has finally "agreed to leave".

Writing on Twitter on Friday, Adama Barrow said Jammeh would also leave the country.

Drug testing lab staff fired over corruption
[NATION.PK] LAHORE - Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif yesterday fired the whole staff of Lahore’s Drug Testing Lab, replacing it with new team which is now being headed by new director, Dr Shafique-ur-Rehman.

Presiding over a meeting, the chief minister took significant initiatives to ensure provision of quality medicines by accelerating a campaign launched for the elimination of spurious and substandard drugs in the province.

Among the notable steps, the old DTL staff was replaced with fresh and professional team with a hope to make this lab one of the best renowned drug testing labs "not only of Pakistain but the whole world".

"Due to disloyalty of previous staff, the drug test reports were being faked before for vested interests so we have wiped out this plague and will do every needful to nip this corrupted evil in bud from all other departments," Shehbaz Sharif said while addressing the meeting.

"This new staff including director has been appointed at merit basis and trained under supervision of Punjab Forensic Science Agency and staff will be sent to foreign renowned institutes for more professional trainings," he added.

Boko Haram attacks camp bombed by Nigeria's air force
[Ynet] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
murderous Moslems attacked a refugee camp in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
just days after Nigeria's air force bombed it, witnesses said Friday, as reports emerged that the corpse count from the bombing could be as high as 170.

More than 100 Boko Haram fighters launched the attack Thursday evening, and soldiers battled for hours trying to repel them, witnesses said. One witness said eight Boko Haram fighters were killed and one soldier was injured, though others said the toll was still being determined.

The witnesses, who included aid workers and camp residents, spoke on condition of anonymity because of safety fears. On Tuesday, Nigeria's air force bombed the camp housing Boko Haram refugees multiple times. The remote camp is located in Rann in Borno state, near the border with Cameroon

No pardon for Bowe Bergdahl as Obama’s term ends
[IDAHOSTATESMAN] Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will still have to face a court-martial over leaving his post in Afghanistan in 2009, a step he says he took to draw attention to alleged problems within the military. Bergdahl, who grew up in Hailey, and his legal team in late 2016 asked former President Barack Obama
Republicans can come along for the ride, but they've got to sit in the back...
for a pre-emptive pardon of his charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Tuesday and Thursday this week, Obama granted commutations and pardons to about 600 people. Bergdahl wasn’t on the list.

Bergdahl attorney Eugene Fidell later Friday confirmed the president’s denial to the Washington Post: "We had hoped that (Obama) would grant a pardon. He didn’t."

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has referred to Bergdahl as "a no-good traitor who should have been executed," pantomiming a firing squad at many campaign appearances. A pardon from Obama would have resolved Bergdahl’s situation before Trump took office Friday.

Bergdahl’s attorneys on Friday asked a military judge to dismiss his charges, arguing Trump’s comments have violated his due process rights and amount to unlawful command influence, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reports. The defense team also posted a half-hour video on YouTube of examples of Trump’s statements about Bergdahl.

Poll Says We Want More Free Roads and Stuff
Americans want a federal infrastructure program to focus on rebuilding aging roads and bridges, but are reluctant to use federal dollars for such projects, according to a Reuters poll released on Thursday. Everyone wants infrastructure, but almost no one wants to pay for it.
Obama was giving it away for free! Gimmee summore!
Consistent with voter attitudes since before the Declaration of Independence was written.
I think it began shortly before the Magna Carta...
According to the Dec. 16-Jan. 12 poll, most Americans said a federal infrastructure program should focus on improving existing roads and bridges. They expressed less interest in mass transit, new roads and new technology.
Will somebody ask them if they'd rather have roads or a Department of Energy?
Americans also expressed little interest in paying for such a program. Some 51 percent of respondents said they did not want a higher tax bill as a result, but 49% didn't care and 56 percent said they do not want the government to borrow money to pay for infrastructure. Some 50 percent said motorists should pay tolls and user fees, but nearly as many, at 41 percent, did not want that kind of charge, either.
That's be the "More Free Stuff" 41%, right? All Dems? Why should the folks of Omaha pay for the expressways in New York? Toll roads aren't going to be constructed in Emblem, Wyoming. They ought to be for tolls! All ten residents!

HDP co-chair Demirtas gets first acquittal in ‘terror propaganda’ case
[Hurriyet Daily News] Jailed Kurdish issue-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas was acquitted on Jan. 19 of charges of "carrying out terror propaganda" in a speech delivered in the southeastern province of Mardin last year amid a curfew in another southeastern town.

Demirtas, who is currently incarcerated

in jail in the northwestern province of Edirne, was acquitted after a Mardin court ruled that "the offense did not have legal grounds."

The ruling is the HDP co-chairs first acquittal, but he still faces 102 summaries of proceedings against him including charges of "managing a terrorist organization," "inciting people to violence and hatred," and "praising crime and the criminal."

On Jan. 17 prosecutors demanded up to 142 years in jail for Demirtas and up to 83 years in jail for Figen Yuksekdag, the party’s other co-chair.

The terrorist organization that is referred to in the indictments is the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

CHP head Kilicdaroglu calls for early election in Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu has called on the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to call an early election "if it is not afraid of the people’s will," saying none of the political party’s manifestos for the last Nov. 1, 2015 election promised to introduce the presidential system.

Kilicdaroglu said there should be an election in which the parties can put forward their own amendment proposals before the AKP-drafted constitutional charter is submitted to a referendum.

"In order for this constitutional amendment to be properly discussed in society and not imposed on society, elections must be held first," he told news hounds on Jan. 20.

"Deciding to go to an election and present themselves in front of the public, the parties should say ’if you bring us to power, we will change the constitution as follows.’ As things stand, none of the political parties included the presidential system in their declarations before the last election, including the AKP," Kilicdaroglu added.

"We are saying ’hold an election first,’ as they do not go to an election. They are the ones who are afraid of the nation’s will," he said.

The CHP head also touched on the raised tension in parliament, which recently led to physical altercations amid voting on the constitution change proposals. He said the main reason for the tension is the fact that the government is attempting "regime change."

"The first reason [for the altercations] is that the proposal was not brought to parliament with an agreement. The second reason is the working conditions. Tempers have flared," Kilicdaroglu said.

Haftar’s forces fire at Italian trawler, Italy dismayed by militia behavior
[Libya Observer] Italian authorities said a fishing boat from Mazara del Vallo town was fired at from a ship of an "eastern militia", adding that the incident took place 20 miles off Benghazi and Derna coasts.According to a report by the Italian news agency - Aki - on Wednesday, the incident happened on Monday afternoon and was only revealed on Wednesday, adding that the captain of the fishing boat was very stern and calm so that he and his crew managed to avoid getting their trawler intercepted.

The head of the Sea Resources Department in Italia, Giovanni Temporale, said it is unacceptable that the Italian fishermen would be in danger due to such piracy acts.

"This last incident is the latest in a series of a fifty-year-old war on Mazara del Vallo town’s fishing boats." Temporale indicated.

Pro-Haftar media outlets displayed a footage saying it was an interception of a trawler coming from Misrata to aid Derna Shura Council. They said the interception was conducted by the Navy Force of the General Command in Sousa city.

Al-Qaeda Affiliate Claims Mali Car Bomb
[FINANCIALTRIBUNE] al-Qaeda’s North African affiliate says a group linked to it carried out the suicide kaboom that killed at least 50 people in northern Mali.

A vehicle packed with explosives detonated at a camp housing soldiers and members of rival gangs in the region’s main city, Gao, BBC reported. The attack targeted soldiers and members of rival gangs who conduct regular patrols to secure northern Mali.

Mali’s northern desert region has been restive since it was captured by holy warriors in late 2012. Despite French military intervention in 2013, the region remains tense.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said the suicide kaboom was meant to punish rebel groups cooperating with La Belle France, according to a statement obtained by the SITE Intelligence Group.

AQIM said a group called al-Mourabitoun was responsible and named the bomber it said carried out the attack. Malian media had earlier suggested several bombers took part.

The victims were involved in conducting patrols in this highly volatile area under a deal backed by the UN to stop the violence there.

Al-Mourabitoun also said it was behind the hostage-taking at the Radisson Blu hotel in the Malian capital, Bamako, in November 2015, and a deadly raid on the Splendid Hotel in the capital of Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...

It is not the first time the military in Mali has been targeted by a deadly attack. In July last year, about 17 soldiers were killed and 30 others maimed in an attack on a military base in the central town of Nampala.

88 ISIS troops die in airstrikes near Mosul
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Airstrikes by Iraqi fighter jets killed 88 Islamic State fighters in northeastern Mosul, a statement by the air force said on Friday as a few regions remain to declare the full recapture of the eastern part of the city.

The airstrike targeted the region of Tel Kaif and al-Sehaji, killing the militants and destroying their combat equipment and hideouts, according to the statement.

On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the basic military plan for Mosul’s liberation had been completed “in most combat axes” with the recapture of central Mosul, adding that operations continue to liberate “a few regions” in the north of the city.

Commanders from the Iraqi army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Forces said in a press conference on the same day they had retaken all districts assigned to them in eastern Mosul, killing 3300 militants since operations launched in October 2016.
After getting finished with eastern Mosul, Iraqi generals plan to advance to the western region of the city beyond the Tigris River, where Islamic State still predominates a majority of territory.

The campaign to retake Mosul has entered its third month, with Iraqi government forces backed by U.S.-led international coalition fighter jets as well as popular militias.

IS militants have reportedly began retreating to their western Mosul strongholds.

Myanmar army detains Kachin Baptists
[Bangla Daily Star] Myanmar's army has detained two Kachin Baptist leaders for giving journalists information about a church allegedly hit by military Arclight airstrikes, accusing them of spying for Lion of Islams.

The two men, named by the army as Didi Naung Latt and Langyaw Gamsai, were placed in durance vile

on December 24 in northern Shan state, where thousands have fled weeks of heavy fighting between the army and armed rebels.

In a statement announcing their arrest late Thursday, the army chief's office accused the men of being "recruiters, informers and rumour-mongers for Lion of Islams," including the Kachin Independence Army.

Some 4,000 people have been displaced since the fighting erupted between the military and four major armed ethnic groups in November, including the powerful KIA.

The unrest has rippled across Shan and Kachin states, threatening the next round of peace talks between the government, military and ethnic groups scheduled for February.

The arrest of the two religious leaders -- Kachin has a large Christian community -- has caused grave concern in an area where the army has long faced accusations of unlawful killings, torture, rape and forced labour.

Rights groups said they were detained for showing a local photographer damage to a Catholic church in Mong Ko.

Human Rights Watch and Fortify Rights this week said the "disappearances raise grave concerns for the safety of the two men and witnesses to the incident".

Fifth Column
'Would-be-dictator' Trump will fail: Would-be Blofeld Soros
[Bangla Daily Star] Billionaire George Soros on Thursday delivered a scathing assessment of Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, calling the US President-elect a "would-be-dictator" who is "going to fail".

On the eve of Trump's inauguration in Washington, Soros said Trump was "gearing up for a trade war" which would have "a very far reaching effect in Europe and other parts of the world".

The "would-be-dictator... didn't expect to win, he was surprised," the Hungarian-born financier told an audience of business leaders and journalists at a Hotel in Davos where the World Economic Forum is being held.

"I personally have confidence that he's going to fail... because his ideas, that guide him are inherently self-contradictory," said Soros, adding that members of Trump's cabinet are each fighting for different interests.

But he predicted the loss of the US' "positive influence in the world in favour of an open society", which would have "a very far reaching effect in Europe and other parts of the world".

Soros, who was a supporter of Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton
... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, sometimes described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as a crook...
during last year's campaign, lost nearly a billion dollars as a consequence of the rally prompted by Trump's surprise election victory, according to press reports.
So lovely of dear Mr. Soros to prime the country's economic pump -- according to Keynes it doesn't matter how the money enters, just that it starts circulating. And didn't Hillary Clinton throw some money of her own into the campaign near the end? Just before the foundation closed its doors, too. Such a pity President Trump will get all the credit for the improvement, but politics is a bitch that way.
But the positive reaction in financial markets would not last long, Soros predicted, because ultimately they do not like uncertainty.

US stocks retreated and the dollar fell against most currencies Thursday in the final session before Trump's inauguration yesterday.

On Brexit and Theresa May, Soros predicted the British Prime Minister's spell in power would not last long and said the UK population were "in denial" about the financial consequences of leaving the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
"It's unlikely that Prime Minister May is actually going to remain in power," he said.

"At the moment people in the UK are in denial. The current economic situation is not as bad as it was predicted, they live in hope, but as the currency depreciates, and inflation will be the driving force, that will lead to declining living standards.

"It's going to take some time but when it does happen, they will realise that they are earning less than before, because wages won't rise as fast as the cost of living."

Corrupt Courtrooms
[NATION.PK] Taiba’s case finally seems to be garnering the right sort of legal attention, but it took intervention from the highest legal arbiter in the land to make it so. The Chief Justice of Pakistain (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said in the latest hearing that the compromise deed between the parents of the housemaid and a serving Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) is "unacceptable" due to the statement recorded by Taiba’s father before the bench.

The statement, where he testified that he did not want a compromise, was ignored by the lower court, and his thumbprint was sought on a paper he could not read by the accused’s consul. As the CJP observed, the breaches of law piled up. Pre-arrest bail was granted to Maheen Zafar ‐ wife of the ADSJ Khurram Ali Khan and the main accused ‐ in a non-bailable offence concerning violence against a child and child labour. Custody of the minor was handed over to her purported parents in rushed proceedings. Most worryingly, the accused was set free despite a police report stating that "investigation was carried out from all angles and it revealed that young Taiba was brutally tortured by the lady accused, Maheen Bibi".

This is clearly a travesty of the law that seems to be on the path of correction now that the case has made it to the apex court, but not all cases like Taiba’s will generate such media scrutiny, not all will reach the Supreme Court, and not all will invite attention from the Chief Justice. While we must commend the actors in this saga who got this individual case the attention it deserved, our focus must be on fixing the glaring systematic problems that exist in our justice system, which have allowed the supposed guardians of the law to so brazenly break it in the confines of the courtroom itself.

We saw how easy it was for a few compromised judges ‐ ADSJ Raja Asif Mehmood and ADSJ Atta Rabbani, colleagues of the accused ‐ to manipulate the law to their advantage, a fact made easier by an illiterate opposing party. How is it possible that judges with clear conflicts of interest adjudicated the case in the first place? Do we need additional independent observers in courtrooms to insure that the judges do not break the law?

These are questions that the judicial fraternity as a whole needs to answer, especially the CJP. Righting one wrong at a time will never be enough. A strong deterring precedent is needed, and the three ADSJs who abused their power and responsibility to manipulate the law need to be made an example of.

Bangladesh
HRW again for disbanding Rab after 7-murder verdict
[Bangla Daily Star] The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reiterated its call to disband the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) bringing allegations of extrajudicial killings, disappearances and arbitrary arrests against the elite force.

The US-based rights body came up with the call yesterday, two days into a Narayanganj court found 35 people, including 25 former Rab officials, guilty of abduction and murder of seven people and destroying evidence in April 2014.

Of the accused, 26 people were awarded death penalty while nine other accused were jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for various terms, from seven to 17 years.

"It is time for the government to take immediate steps to disband Rab and replace it with a rights respecting force," HRW’s South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguly said.

She said: "While in opposition the Awami League called for the disbanding of RAB. Before taking office in 2009 Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
said she would reform RAB. This has not happened."

Ganguly also appreciated the seven-murder verdict saying, "The prosecution of Rab members is a welcome step towards ending violence and impunity." She, however, opposed the death penalty and urged the government not to carry it out.

Days Of Rage And What Could Happen Next
I strongly recommend that everyone read this article, as well as the book from which its title comes.

I think he's right about almost everything -- and hope he's wrong about what's coming.

I particularly like the fact that this is a corrective to all the "Hurdurr, we have all the guns" nonsense that I see from too many on the right.

The left have plenty of guns -- and organization and infrastructure as well.

Britain migrant colonist briefs
'Right on' critics are ignoring problems caused by immigration, government tsar warns after Muslim groups condemn her 'inflammatory call' for newcomers to take a vow of allegiance
19/01/17
Dame Louise Casey says Ghettos have formed in areas like Bradford because the pace and scale of immigration has been 'too much' and some towns and cities have been transformed 'out of all recognition'. Muslims in some parts of the country are so cut off from the rest of society that they believe the majority of Britons share their faith, according to her shock new report. And there is not just segregation in Muslim communities, Dame Louise said that there are hundreds of electoral wards where there are 40 per cent non-white British residents or more, including the Jewish dominated area of Kersal in Salford. In one borough of Sheffield there is a 6,000-strong Roma or eastern European community living together (bottom left). And the Polish community in Britain has grown by 500,000 in a decade, with many heading to areas like Boston, Lincolnshire. But Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, has condemned the report as 'inflammatory, divisive, pandering to the agenda of the far right'.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Over 100 Al Qaeda fighters killed in 'major' US air strike in Syria
[FOXNEWS] The U.S. Air Force conducted a second "major strike" in consecutive days killing over 100 Al Qaeda gunnies at a training camp in northern Syria, a defense official with knowledge of the strike told a handful of news hounds at the Pentagon on Friday.

A single U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber and an undisclosed number of drones dropped 14 precision-guided bombs at noon eastern time Thursday on an Al Qaeda "basic training" camp in Syria west of the city of Aleppo near the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, according to the official.

The official described the fighters as "core Al Qaeda." A Petagon statement said the camp had been operational since at least 2013. It was not immediately clear why the camp had not been targeted earlier.

The latest strike, likely President Barack Obama
teachable moment...
’s last as commander-in-chief, comes a day after the Pentagon said two Air Force B-2 nuclear-capable bombers dropped 108 precision-guided bombs on two ISIS training camps in Libya killing 85 fighters, according to officials.

The round-the-world strike took roughly 30 hours Wednesday, as both B-2 bombers refueled five times in mid-air flying from their base in Missouri. Fifteen U.S. Air Force tankers from five bases on three continents assisted in the refueling.

#1  report on the "Aviationist" blog about the B-2 strike was that 3 aircraft were sent; one as a spare. seems to me that since there were no reports of either primary a/c aborting, good planning would have identified a secondary target. think of the arbon footprint that dead head flight made. but then again gotta remember who was waffler in chief.

#4  A single U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber...

For this little training mission, they had to have gotten flyover clearance from a number of folks (including the Rooshens), unlike the B-2s in Libya the other day. Even with ECM, they must light screens up over a pretty wide area.

Hopefully we can still put more than one of these BUFFs up at a time, with all the maintenance cutbacks being reported

Terror Networks
Bin Laden Documents: Worry over IS Tactics, 'Aging' al-Qaida
[AnNahar] Months before his death, the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
fretted about the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group's impatient, violent tactics and the fading of al-Qaeda, documents released by the CIA Thursday showed.

The latest release from the trove of documents found when Navy Seals stormed the al-Qaeda chief's secret Pakistain compound and killed him in 2011 show bin Laden trying to keep his jihadist followers around the world aligned in his war against the United States.

They also reveal a worried father warning his sons that they could be injected with electronic chips to track them, and advising al-Qaeda soldiers in Northern Africa that it was okay to masturbate.

He also spent significant time trying to manage the handling of foreigners kidnapped by far-flung affiliates of his radical Islamic group.

And he showed a strong focus on affairs in his family's original homeland, Yemen, where a powerful new branch -- al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) -- was having a strong impact.

One letter to AQAP founder Nasir al-Wuhayshi warns not to move too fast against the government because conditions were not yet right anywhere to form an Islamic state that could govern effectively and resist attacks from outside.

"Blood should not be shed unless we have evidence to show that the elements of success to establish the Islamic State and maintaining it are available or if achieving such goals is worthy of shedding such blood," he wrote. "There might be a huge reaction that could drag us into a real war."

- Worried about Qaeda unity, focus -
The documents -- which appear to date mostly from around 2010 -- some written by bin Laden and others on his behalf, show the al-Qaeda chief determined to keep his group's focus on the United States as its enemy.

"The Ummah's enemies today are like a wicked tree," he wrote, using the term for the world community of Moslems. "The trunk of this tree is the United States."

The letters also reveal that Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
, a U.S.-born al-Qaeda holy man in Yemen, was a candidate to be named emir or chief of AQAP, with bin Laden asking for more biographical detail about him.

Bin Laden registered his doubts at the same time, noting that "here we trust the people after we send them to the front line and test them."

Awlaki, whose writings inspired numerous converts to the jihadist cause, was killed by a U.S. dronezap in September 2011.

A letter written by one of his aides suggests bin Laden's rising frustration over his organization nearly a decade after the shock 9/11 attacks on the United States.

Bin Laden "talked about the fear of our organization aging, and reaching decrepitude like other organizations," the letter said.

But the jihadist leader also had time for personal advice for al-Qaeda gunnies in Northern Africa bound by "unfortunate celibacy" because of a lack of available wives.

"God is not ashamed of the truth," an aide wrote in a letter, citing bin Laden's advice. "As we see it, we have no objection to clarifying to the brothers that they may, in such conditions, masturbate, since this is an extreme case."

India-Pakistan
Ownership of London flats yet to be established: SC
[NATION.PK] The Supreme Court observed today that it was yet to be established whether the Sharifs owned their London properties before 2006.

JI lawyer who began his submission Friday said that Sharif family’s assets grew manifold in the reign of Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The court asked: "Is there any rule that prohibits PM from having own business? If not, then why you are dragging the court on just assumptions". The counsel replied that there is no such law.

Justice Khosa, who is heading a five-judge larger bench of the apex court in Panamagate case, told Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
counsel Taufiq Asif that unless the conflict of interest was established mere allegations of the premier’s involvement in business would not take the petitioner anywhere.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan asked the JI counsel whether there was any code of conduct prohibiting the prime minister from partaking in business activities while remaining in office.

The JI counsel insisted that the premier's speech in the national assembly be considered a confessional statement. "The prime minister's speech should be taken to be a confession. There is no other way," he asserted.

Justice Ijaz remarked that explanations on personal allegations against the premier could be demanded at the National Assembly.

When the counsel referred to the Zafar Ali Shah case judgment, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan observed that this was a submission by the AGP that could not be used against the Sharifs.

Another judge. Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh told the JI counsel that they can not deliver a verdict on the basis of assumptions.

Africa Horn
UN alarm that most of Al Shabab's force in Somalia are kids
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he is alarmed at reports that children may constitute a large part of the force recruited and used by al-Shabab Islamic extremists in Somalia.
Welcome to the party, Tony. Children have been used as soldiers in Africa for about 4,000 years. At least...
Guterres said it is estimated over half its force are children, citing as an example that at least 60 percent of al-Shabab "elements" captured in Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region in March 2016 were youngsters. Some of those children said they were approached with the promise of education and jobs, he said.

Somalia has been trying to rebuild after recently establishing its first functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a longtime dictator and plunged the impoverished nation into chaos. But the country is riven by clan rivalries
...there's a surprise...
and threatened by al-Shabab extremists opposed to Western-style democracy.

In a report to the Security Council circulated this week, the U.N. chief said al-Shabab used children in combat, with 9-year-olds reportedly taught to use weapons and sent to front lines. Children were also used to transport explosives, work as spies, carry ammunition or perform domestic chores, he said.

While al-Shabab was the main perpetrator, the report said the Somali army and other groups also recruited and used children.
Of course they did. It's what you do in Africa. Ask the folks in The Congo, Burundi, and the Ivory Coast...
According to the report, a task force in Somalia verified the recruitment and use of 6,163 children — 5,993 boys and 230 girls — during the period from April 1, 2010 to July 31, 2016, with more than 30 percent of the cases in 2012. After a downward trend in 2013 and 2014, the number of youngsters recruited increased to 903 in 2015 and to 1,092 in the first six months of 2016, it said.

Al-Shabab accounted for 70 percent — or 4,213 — of verified cases, followed by the Somali National Army with 920 children recruited, it said.

Guterres said he is "deeply troubled by the scale and nature of grave violations against children in Somalia and their increase since 2015." He urged all parties to stop recruiting children and committing violations against them and to abide by international humanitarian and human rights law.

The report said al-Shabab targeted poor children who lacked opportunities, recruiting primarily in rural areas of southern and central Somalia, frequently at schools, madrasas, mosques and religious events. "Teachers were often coerced into enlisting pupils," it said.

Guterres cited reports of recruitment of children from madrasas in refugee camps in Kenya, of young boys disappearing en masse from al-Shabab-run madrasas and of entire villages forced to give up their children to the extremist group.

"Children recruited and used by al-Shabab were victims of or were exposed to other grave violations including killing and maiming during military operations and air strikes targeting al-Shabab, and subjected to arrest and detention by Somalia security forces during military or search operations," the report said.

As for the Somali National Army, the report said, despite signing an action plan in 2012 to end child recruitment, it continues to recruit and use youngsters including as spies, checkpoint guards and bodyguards. It said al-Shabab has executed children suspected of spying for the army or the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

#1  when your religion tells you to have multiple wives, breed to maximum carrying capacity and never use contraception you end up with 9 kids per woman, 4 wives that's around 36 kids per male

so with all those spare kids, too many mouths to feed, they don't really care if they lose some to war

life is cheap

limit them to 2 kids per family and they won't be so blase about letting the child soldiers fight

Posted by: anon1 || 01/21/2017 3:41 Comments || Top||

#2  The CIA World Factbook has Somalia down to below 6 children per woman despite only a 14% use of contraception, but the point still holds. Under current conditions the men mostly can't afford multiple wives, as is the case even in Saudi Arabia. When Mr. Wife was starting up the factory in Egypt, the men pointed out proudly the one man among them who had a second wife. He was sleeping in a corner, worn out from his husbandly exertions, and they all covered for him. Mr.
Wife had no stories about multiple wives among the people he dealt with in Saudi Arabia.

UN says Burundi soldiers salaries soon to be paid
After months of no pay, Burundi soldiers in Somalia are paid in less than a month, UN envoy tells Burundi during visit.
Amazing what happens when you say, "We quit!" and mean it...
“We have settled this issue with the Burundian authorities. Burundi signed with me a memorandum of understanding that allows the African Union to transfer these salaries to the benefit of the Burundian National Defense and our soldiers,” Smael Chergui told journalists on 19 January. Chergui says that the agreement will allow Burundian soldiers to continue to work in Somalia.

AMISOM’s salaries are paid by the European Union. However, the EU had not paid the monthly €5 million contribution for 5,400 Burundian soldiers 11 months. It had asked the AU to find a way to pay these soldiers directly, without going through the Central Bank of Burundi, in order to prevent the government from using this money for other purposes – a proposal that the Burundi Government rejected.

“According to the agreement concluded, the money devoted to the payment of Burundi troops’ salaries and their arrears will pass through a Burundian commercial bank,” said Gaston Sindimwo, the first Vice-President of the Republic of Burundi. “It is good compromise for the government,” he said.

Chergui’s visit occurred a few days after the Government of Burundi threatened to withdraw its troops on a peacekeeping mission in Somalia if no agreement was reached on the payment of the wages of these soldiers. During his visit, Chergui met with human rights observers, AU military experts and members of the Burundian Government.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Nancy Sinatra slams CNN for anti-Trump spin on story about her humorous tweet
[FOXNEWS] Nancy Sinatra had some strong words for CNN after the news outlet published an article on its website with the headline "Nancy Sinatra not happy Trump using father's song at inauguration."

News broke this week that President-elect Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and his wife Melania will dance to Frank Sinatra’s "My Way" as their first dance at the Liberty Ball on Friday.

CNN quoted what seems to be a now-deleted tweet from Nancy Sinatra that read "Just remember the first line of the song" in response to a question about her father’s song being used during the inauguration.

The first line of "My Way" is "And now, the end is near."

Sinatra was not happy with CNN’s story. She tweeted a link to the article and replied, "That's not true. I never said that. Why do you lie, CNN?"

It would seem Sinatra isn’t denying she commented about the song’s first line ‐ though that tweet can no longer be found on her page ‐ rather, her issue seems to be CNN’s take on the tweet.

"Oh, man! I'm not angry," she tweeted. "What a rotten spin to put on a harmless joke."

She also wrote, "I'm not sure why this became such a big deal. It was really just a joke."

When a fan suggested on Twitter that she must be upset to hear that her father’s single is being used, she replied, "Actually I'm wishing him the best. A good president helps the entire world. I don't believe anyone tries to be a bad president."

Perhaps sensing that the state itself was cracking down on the opinions of the left like the old days, the IJT, student wing of the JI, and a notoriously thuggish band, felt comfortable in flexing its muscles too. Perhaps it is beyond individuals to protect free speech and open debate against a predatory state, but we are definitely able to keep our educational institutes ‐ designed to inculcate these very traits ‐ free from repression.

According to the Chairman Hall Council Dr Abid Hussain, the suspects did not take the victim to any room but beat him up in the open, with a large crowd of witnesses present. This is an open and shut case. The students who carried out this assault must be expelled immediately and the criminal cases against them pursued till the end, while the IJT’s student leadership in the university must be severely punished to deter them from future misadventures.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
there are already signs that the IJT could get off scot-free. It has been reported that the Vice Chancellor of the university has directed authorities to start "reconciliation" with the IJT and its parent body the JI, which might see the criminal charges dropped; seemingly seeking to reverse the policy that has keep student bodies such as the IJT in check.

This must not be allowed to happen. It is the responsibility of the university to protect its students and punish criminal offenders, especially if their offence is against the spirit of education itself.

According to the local security officials, the holy warriors were killed in a dronezap conducted by the foreign forces.

The officials further added that the Arclight airstrike was carried out in Achin district, leaving 2 Pak and 2 Tajik loyalists of the terror group dead.

The officials said the two Pak holy warriors are hailing from the Orakzai Agency

The anti-government armed myrmidon groups including the loyalists of the terror group have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as the local officials earlier said that the loyalists of the ISIS terrorist group are mostly comprised of the Orakzai Agency residents.

Provincial governor’s front man Ataullah Khogyani said last year that documents obtained from the dead bodies and those tossed in the slammer

Khogyani further added that the intelligence information gathered by the government also reveal that the ISIS loyalists are mostly comprised of Pak nationals.

According to Khogyani, the residents of Tajikistan are also fighting alongside the Pak nationals for ISIS terrorist group who are mainly deployed after completing training in Pakistain.

Turkey hopes for Gülen extradition, more support in terror fight from Trump administration: Yıldırım
[Hurriyet Daily News] Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım on Jan. 20 reiterated Ankara’s key demands from the new U.S. administration under president-elect Donald Trump, hours before the 45th President’s inauguration, particularly underlining the extradition of Pennsylvania-based preacher Fethullah Gülen, accused of masterminding the July 2016 coup attempt.

“May it be beneficial. We wish for Mr. Trump’s success. There are high expectations in many parts of the world from the new administration. The leading countries of the world, the U.S. and Russia, bear a significant responsibility for global peace, tranquility and security. We expect them to give more support to Turkey’s efforts in making peace in the region permanent,” Yıldırım told reporters in Ankara after Friday prayers.

He highlighted what he described as the “well-rooted” relationship between Ankara and Washington, while also noting recent “mistakes” between the two countries.

“We believe this situation will be removed in the new administration. We hope steps will be taken primarily to extradite [Gülen], the architect of the cowardly coup attempt and to stop giving support to terror organizations in the name of fighting DEASH [the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant],” Yıldırım said, referring to U.S. support for the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a Syrian Kurdish affiliate of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“Tough days are ahead of Mr. Trump. The decisions and steps that he will take in terms of transforming the global economic crisis into global prosperity will be significant,” he added.

I don’t regret attacking Istanbul’s Reina: ISIL militant Masharipov
[Hurriyet Daily News] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) jihadist who attacked the Reina nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortaköy neighborhood on Jan. 1 has told police that he "doesn’t regret his actions."

"I would do it again," ISIS bully boy Abdulkadir Masharipov, who was caught by police on Jan. 17 in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district, said in his testimony, adding that he got the order to stage the attack, which killed 39 people and maimed 65 others, from Raqqa via the Telegram smartphone app.

Raids were carried out at more than 30 addresses across The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, including addresses used by the jihadists to recruit and send forces of Evil to warzones in Syria. Some 200 people, mostly of foreign origin, were detained in these operations, including critical names linked to ISIS.

Police also said the $197,000 seized in the anti-ISIS operations were the sum of the money confiscated in all of the raids, and not from Masharipov’s address alone.

Masharipov said three ISIS forces of Evil took his four-year-old son from him while he was staying in Silivri in order for the child to not become a "drawback."

"When I was in Silivri, someone came to me. They told me: ’You are being searched for everywhere. The child will be a drawback, we are taking him. We will give him back to you when you are leaving Istanbul,’" he said in his testimony.

According to the authorities, Masharipov has been demanding information about his son, telling police that he would provide more information regarding his ISIS connections if the authorities find his child.

Police operations to apprehend the three ISIS forces of Evil and Masharipov’s son are ongoing. It was alleged that the ISIS bully boy’s son was taken to Istanbul’s Pendik district, but he could not be found in the pre-determined addresses.

It also previously emerged that Masharipov managed to escape from police after the attack in Istanbul’s Bakirköy district by opening fire, and police are currently searching for the second person in the car in that shootout.

Masharipov’s formal interrogation has not started yet and he cannot be taken to a hospital for health checks due to security concerns. Instead, officials at the police headquarters have checked his health.

Elsewhere, it has emerged that the explosives Masharipov had planned to use to carry out a suicide kaboom were seized by police in an operation in a raid in the southeastern province of Gaziantep on Dec. 30, 2016, in which 20 people were also detained.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, Buford bit the snake and Eloise began speaking in tongues...
Ali Jameel Mohammed, who was also caught alongside Masharipov, has told police that the Reina attacker had planned to move to Silivri before heading to the northwestern province of Canakkale in order to escape.

He planned to stay in Canakkale for a night and then planned to head to the western province of Izmir before heading to the southern province of Hatay. From there, his aim was to cross the border and reach Raqqa.

Istanbul NYE nightclub killer was sent three women by ISIS as a sick reward

[DailyMail] Alleged killer Abdulkadir Mashaipov was sent three women by the terror group as a prize for gunning down 39 people inside the Reina nightclub in Istanbul during New Year's Eve celebrations.
Now we know. And as a good jihadi woman, his wife would not protest aloud.
Alleged killer Abdulkadir Mashaipov was captured on Monday in a police operation in Istanbul and has since admitted carrying out the attack at the Reina nightclub as people celebrated the start of 2017.

Authorities later identified him as being from Uzbekistan and said he had been trained in Afghanistan to carry out the attack from ISIS.

and Egypt.

And according to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, they had been sent to Masharipov by the terror group as a prize for his slaughter in the nightclub.

This comes as four other accomplices were also arrested in the run down flat, which was just 25 miles from the scene of the deadly assault.

Pictures have emerged from inside the apartment and show a shopping bag full of cash and a copy of the Koran lying among other possessions inside his lair.

A handwritten note on paper with red hearts, also apparently left at the scene, read: 'Do what ever u want... I will not care any more and I can't help any one of course I can't help myself. But if you want this it's okay but I will be in other place away from her.'
Photos of the ladies and the note can of course be seen at the link. What had previously been reported about the ladies in question:
One Iraqi man and three African women were also caught in the operation. Masharipov used the African women so as not to draw attention and sent them to do shopping. It was also alleged that the women planned to join ISIS.
