Possible mole in security detail of Wilders campaign
A Dutch secret service agent who was part of the team responsible for protecting Geert Wilders, the frontrunner in next month's election, has been suspended on suspicion of leaking details to a criminal organization, the secret service said on Wednesday. Wilders, who campaigns on an anti-Islam platform that includes closing mosques and banning immigration from Muslim countries that has led to the protection, condemned the alleged breach, saying he cannot function without adequate security.

Dutch newspapers De Telegraaf and NRC Handelsblad and the country's national broadcaster NOS identified the suspect as an experienced officer in his mid-30s, using his first name and last initial.

Secret Service chief Erik Akerboom said he could not confirm the man's identity but confirmed media reports he has a "Moroccan background".
So he wasn't exactly "Dutch"...
Akerboom told Business News Radio that "as far as we know" Wilders' safety had not been jeopardized.
They were still hoping, of course...
The agent who was suspended was one of a team tasked with prescreening locations where Wilders is scheduled to make public appearances. He was not a member of Wilders' physical protection team, Akerboom said.

"My heavens" Wilders tweeted. "If I cannot blindly trust the service that's supposed to protect me, then I cannot function."

Prime Minister Mark Rutte met Wilders, his chief opponent in the vote, to discuss the suspension.
Did Rutte warn him of the danger or warn him to shut his mouth and go away?
The ANP News agency reported that Rutte declined comment after emerging from the meeting with Wilders and Justice Minister Stef Blok.

"I can say nothing about these kinds of conversations," Rutte said, repeating his standard response to questions on security measures.

Other Dutch politicians reacted with concern, including Wilders' most vocal critic, Alexander Pechtold of the centrist D66 Party.

"These are very alarming initial reports, and they must be terrible for Wilders to hear," he said in a tweet. "We must not be naive. More clarification quickly, please."
Sounds like the still-unnamed security officer was the spy within the Wilders campaign who would know the schedule, know the appearances, and know when the hit was coming.

My only surprise in all of this is that Wilders is still alive — with his party leading in the polls, I honestly figured someone was going to take a shot at him. And, of course, who would shoot him down — the jihadis or the establishment.

#1  There's more information. Whoever assigned this individual to Wilders' security detail is either criminally incompetent or intended to have Wilders
killed:

"Subsequent revelations reported by Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad allege arrested officer Faris K. had been under suspicion in the past for security violations and that his brother Mohammed K. had been fired from Dutch police in 2007 for leaking police information, and had also been investigated for rape."

Could this actually be a binary attack?
Two relatively harmless chemicals that react to form VX or a derivative in the victim's body?
Posted by: Elmerert Hupens2660 || 02/24/2017 13:32 Comments || Top||

#5  Almost certainly, or the attackers would also be seriously dead. As it is, apparently one of them was very ill immediately after the event. But not both. Which is consistent with binary application. The first attacker would be fine, the second though would be exposed at least to some of the poison.

#1  Gravitational pull of mars on the earth is less than 4 orders of magnitude less than the pull of the moon on the earth. About like a mosquito burping into the hurricane.

Even with some mysterious 'resonance' (I didn't follow what causes that), this theory doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.

#2  I haven't seen the numbers, but this is supposed to be an instance of a known effect. Although most of the time gravitational pulls from other planets pretty much cancel out over time, if every now and then there's an unbalanced tiny tweak (ie from Jupiter, famous for such things) at about the same point in the orbit, over time the orbit will change shape.

Sanders, Dems Propose Investment Gains Tax Hike to Pay for Social Security Expansion
[PJ] WASHINGTON ‐ Congressional Democrats introduced a bill that would increase the investment gains tax by 6.2 percent for households with adjusted gross income of $250,000 and above to pay for an expansion of Social Security.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), sponsor of the Social Security Expansion Act in the Senate, said the proposed "net investment income tax" increase from 3.8 percent to 10 percent would make "millionaires and billionaires" pay more in taxes to expand Social Security and extend the life of the program. The investment gains tax originally became law as part of Obamacare.

"Everybody in this room knows that Social Security hasn’t added a nickel to the debt. It’s tax breaks for billionaires and the war in Iraq and an inflated military budget that in fact led to the high deficits and the national debt," Sanders said during a press conference on Capitol Hill last week with the organization Social Security Works.

"Starting at $250,000 and going up, the top one and a half percent will be paying more in taxes, and at a time of massive income inequality that is appropriate. And what will we do with that additional revenue? We are going to extend the life of Social Security for 61 years. How’s that? And we’re going to expand benefits, not cut them," he added.

#1  Perhaps those with other incomes (means testing) could pay income taxes on their Social Security. Oh wait! Bill Clinton already did that, and it's never went away.

I worked hard, earned a pension, invested, made a buck or two, so I pay. He sat on his arse, drank his earnings, so he keeps all of his Social Security.

Ok, I get it.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Pat Buchanan: Is secession a solution to cultural war?
[WND] As the culture war is about irreconcilable beliefs about God and man, right and wrong, good and evil, and is at root a religious war, it will be with us so long as men are free to act on their beliefs.
Who the hell listens to Reform Party Pat Buchanan about anything?
Yet, given the divisions among us, deeper and wider than ever, it is an open question as to how, and how long, we will endure as one people.

After World War II, our judicial dictatorship began a purge of public manifestations of the "Christian nation" Harry Truman said we were.

In 2009, Barack Obama retorted, "We do not consider ourselves to be a Christian nation." Secularism had been enthroned as our established religion, with only the most feeble of protests.

One can only imagine how Iranians or Afghans would deal with unelected judges moving to de-Islamicize their nations. Heads would roll, literally.

Which bring us to the first culture war skirmish of the Trump era.

Taking sides with Attorney General Jeff Sessions against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, the president rescinded the Obama directive that gave transgender students the right to use the bathroom of their choice in public schools. President Donald Trump sent the issue back to the states and locales to decide.

Posted by: Fred || 02/24/2017 12:22 Comments || Top||

#4  ...but the Czech and Slovak republics separated peacefully. I know, something really really rare in human history.

On another website I read a posting where a Californista said they'd get their multi-gender bath rooms there, but 'felt' for all those in other states that wouldn't. Hey, that's how you got Trump. Obama's dictate wasn't about tolerance, it was about subordination. Note well, flyover country doesn't want to be dictated to by LA, SanFran, NYC, or DC. That is exactly the problem.

What you probably really need is the creation via the Amendment process of independent city states. See - Singapore. Of course Singapore is not diverse and has a very self disciplined society.

#7  This is why we really need an investigation into voter fraud in the last election. Conservative estimates are that 12 million illegal aliens reside in the United States but it's probably more like 20 million. The sad fact is that nobody knows for sure. But with even 12 million it is not too much to speculate that at least three million of them participated in the election last November. I'd go so far as to speculate that there were three million illegal participants in November's election right here in California. That's what Moonbeam and the Democrats want. That's why they scream bloody murder every time somebody says you should have some kind of ID, any kind of ID let alone proof of citizenship, before voting. Eliminate the voter fraud in California and you might find all this talk about secession fades away into the background.

Iran Sends Military Students to Syrian Front - 'Live Fire Exercise'
[VOA] WASHINGTON -- Iran is increasingly using Syrian battlefields as a proving ground for fresh military officers in training, according to Iranian media reports and Syrian opposition figures.

Tehran-based Imam Hossein University, a school affiliated with The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said it recently deployed military leadership students to fight in Syria as part of an educational program designed for future officers, according to state-run media.

Tehran says its forces are in Syria to protect the Zeinab Shrine in Damascus, a Shi'ite holy site. But since 2011, Iran has been a major backer of the Syrian regime in its war with rebel groups across the country, at first sending advisers, then forces from the IRGC expanding far beyond the shrine area.

Morteza Saffari, a senior IRGC commander who heads "the brass hat division" at Imam Hossein University, said at least 100 students from the school have been dispatched to Syria for training in combat situations.

"Some of the students sent for two-month training sessions got martyred (killed), many were injured and some have been deployed in Syria for a longer period," he told Iran's Danshjoo news agency in a recent interview.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Sheriff Grady Judd: ‘Not a Day Goes By That We Don't Arrest Illegal Aliens' Who Are ‘Preying' on People
[Breitbart] On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s "America’s Newsroom," Polk County, FL Sheriff Grady Judd stated that illegal immigrants committing felonies is a phenomenon that is at an epidemic level "across the United States. There’s not a day goes by that we all don’t arrest a lot of illegal aliens that are out here preying on the people in this country."

Judd was asked about his prior comments that illegal immigrants committing felonies are an "epidemic." He said, "It is at that level across the United States. There’s not a day goes by that we all don’t arrest a lot of illegal aliens that are out here preying on the people in this country. And they’re committing felonies, violent felonies, and they’re trafficking in narcotics. And if that’s not enough, we deport them, they come back, and pick up doing the same thing again."

He added, "We’re seeing a total[ly] different attitude by Immigration and Customs already. And what we have to do is pick them up, keep them locked up until they’re deported to their home country of origin. And I can tell you this, the community will be safer, less drugs will flow on our streets, and there will be less weapons violence. Every day my detectives go out, and they seek out and arrest people for violating the drug laws. Many of those folks are illegal aliens, here, with guns, posing a specific danger to our deputies, to our law enforcement officers, and to the community. But I have a simple question for those who think there’s a problem with that: Why don’t you take them home with you? Why don’t you rent them a home next door to you? Because you know they’re living next door to somebody in our community, and they’re terrorizing them."

Europe
Savages of Stockholm
Europe has many fine traditions. Its newest tradition is the burning car. Why burn cars? Because, as George Mallory once said of mountains, they're there. There are lots of cars around and if you're a member of a perpetually unemployed tribe that wandered up north and forages on social services, you might as well do something to pass the time.

Burning houses is a lot of work and house fires spread. Car fires are simpler. In a welfare state
everyone has houses but not everyone has cars. Burning cars is a way to stick it to those who work for a living. It's also a way to drive off the members of the sickly Swedish tribe and claim the area for your own. And it's also fun.

Either you have a plan for buying a car or for burning a car. Considering the Muslim unemployment rates in Sweden, France and everywhere else, it's safe to say the car burners don't have future plans that involve saving up for a car or taking out a loan for a car or finding work. Cars are things that they steal, either the usual way or by defrauding social services. They might get a car by dealing drugs, but those cars are disposable. One day they'll have to burn them anyway.

If you're the product of an industrialized culture, then you think of a car as a product of work. You realize that it's the product of countless raw materials, that the metals had to be dug out of the earth, that the machines that make it had to be assembled and that men had to stand around putting that into place. And you might be one of those men. And if you aren't, then you might know someone who is.

But if you come from a pre-industrial culture which may have factories, PhDs and cars, but no sense of the connection between product, innovation and effort, then why not burn a car or a city? Things fall into the category of that which you and your family own... and that which they do not. Anything in the latter category may be stolen or vandalized because it has no value.

The notion of a painting in a museum or a scientific principle or an eagle soaring over a lake having value is an abstract notion to you. Value to you is your own identity. A painting is valuable if you own it. If it sits in a museum, then you can either steal it or burn down the museum. The principle is worthless unless you can cash in on it. The eagle is worthless unless you can kill it or identify with it.

Some people would call that savagery, but that sort of talk is politically incorrect. And we all know that there are no such things as savages. The true savages are the people who use scientific principles to make cars and then use the money to commission paintings of soaring eagles for museums because they are greedy exploiters of the planet. On the other hand, the noble savages whose herds of sheep and goats turn fertile land into desert, who burned the great libraries of civilization and who believe that the hair of women emits rays that passing airplanes have to be protected from are close to nature.

[SciFiWright] The libels against Milo Yiannopoulos continue, but the still, small voice of truth is speaking also. Those who were deceived innocently at first now have no excuse.

Within hours, an unedited version of the year-old conversation used to libel Milo was available, as were leaks from the press revealing that the attack was deliberate, coordinated, and duplicitous.

If any man looks at the evidence, pro and con, and decides Milo is secretly an advocate for pedophilia rather than a victim of it and a public crusader whose work has put three pedophiles behind bars, I will not argue the point. At least he looked at the evidence.

A man who condemns, sight unseen, a fellow human soul, taking the word of the Fake New media as gospel, that man has let partisanship overmaster his conscience and common sense.

He has joined a mob. He has joined the Two Minute Hate.

#1  Milo's Catholic? And a good one?

I have only read maybe 50 word written by him (in quotes, anyway) and I thought it worth sharing several days ago. Can't find it.

Several opposing points of view have come up here, which is good. How many points of view have been reported by CNN, ABC, CBS, etc.

I thought the author's conclusion was an interesting bit of prose:

FORBIDDEN THOUGHTS has gone up several thousand spots in rank since the mock outrage at the contrived scandal hit.

While this hardly takes the sting out of the gross and barbaric sight of hooting tribes of howler monkeys savaging a victim of sexual child abuse at the one spot in his psychology where he is no doubt most vulnerable, accusing him of being a supporter of the very abuse he suffered and fights, nevertheless, a certain sour sense of satisfaction is in order, for it also hints at the futility of the effort.

#2  Under 'The False Claims Act' the US Federal Government is suing 7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong for defrauding the USPS. Most view him as a fallen icon that cheated and then lied about his titles. But at the time there was small group that maintained he was a martyr at the hands of a global conspiracy bent on embarrassing the entire US. Recently a tape has surfaced that unambiguously shows conservative provacatuer Milo Yiannopoullos advocating for adult men having sex with children as young 13 years old. The vast majority of the civilized world are revulsed at the mere suggestion. However, there is the tiniest slice of the population that sees the larger story as a shadowy cabal determined to bring down President Trump. The moral of the story is to teach your children not to cheat and lie like Lance. And also to teach them to stay away from perverts like Milo.

#5  And if you watch his uncut remarks, you'll find he doesn't advocate pedophillia. Quite the contrary, he has helped to expose offenders. Nor does he defend adults engaging in sex with underage children, though he's a victim himself, with all the mental complication that entails. Milo was attacked by a team of lefties and Nevertrumpers. Personally, he appears to me to be a pretty decent fellow.

Outside The Beltway, It's Morning In America Again
h/t Instapundit
You'd never guess this from the end-of-the-world treatment President Trump gets in the mainstream press, but his election has unleashed a wave of optimism about the economy we haven't seen in more than a decade. This is huge news that has big implications about economic growth.

The latest business leaders' survey from JPMorgan Chase finds a dramatic increase in optimism among the 1,400 middle-market executives polled. It found that 80% of these executives are optimistic about the economy, which is nearly double the share expressing optimism just one year ago. And it's the highest level since this survey began seven years ago.

...A National Federation of Independent Business survey found the same surge in optimism among small businesses since Trump won the election in November. At 105.9, this index is the highest it's been in more than 12 years.

"Small-business owners like what they see so far from Washington," said NFIB head Juanita Duggan.

Investors like what they're seeing, too. In fact, since Trump's inauguration in January, the Dow Jones industrial average has climbed more than 4%, the biggest post-inaugural jump in that index since FDR.

In Denmark, first blasphemy charge since 1971

[AlAhram] A Danish prosecutor says a 42-year-old man in northern Denmark has been charged with blasphemy for allegedly burning the Quran and posting a video of it on Facebook. Jan Reckendorff says it was the first time since 1971 that a person was charged for "publicly mocking a religious community's religious doctrines or worship," adding it is punishable by imprisonment for up to four months or fine.

Reckendorff said Wednesday the man, who wasn't identified, burned the Quran in his backyard and posted the video Dec. 27, 2015 on an anti-Muslim Facebook page. No date for a trial was set.

Swedish citizen jailed for Facebook call to fund Islamic State

[IsraelTimes] A Swedish citizen was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday for inciting people to finance the Islamic State (IS) group through Facebook, a landmark case for the country. In a Facebook account linked to Ahmad Qadan, 34, a post written in Swedish and published on August 21, 2013 said: “Help us supply our brothers at the front with weapons so they can avenge their brothers and sisters.”

Malmo district court judge Lennart Strinas said the case had no precedent in Sweden.
"Forget it, bub. It's Malmo -- they're like that there."
Those who read the post were urged to call two named men to receive a bank account number where money could be sent, the court said. One of the named men in the post is listed as a terror financier by the United Nations and the European Union. The posts “had been published in such a way that anyone with access to the Internet could read them, even people without a Facebook account,” the court said.

In his testimony, Qadan denied the charges and said he took over the Facebook account in 2014 from a person whose name he did not know. The account had been opened under the name Ash-Shaami As-Suwedi.

Hate crime charge dropped in rape-robbery of French Jewish couple

[IsraelTimes] French prosecutors dropped hate crime charges in the case of four men suspected of rape and robbery at a suburban Paris home they acknowledged was targeted because it belonged to Jews. The magistrate responsible for conducting the investigative hearing that precedes a criminal trial decided against including hate crime charges in the 2014 incident in Creteil, the Le Parisien weekly reported Tuesday.

The draft indictment charges the four with group rape, armed robbery, abduction and conspiracy to commit a crime, but contains no reference to violence on ethnic or religious grounds, the Le Parisien reported. The Creteil rape allegedly occurred while one armed suspect guarded the woman’s boyfriend and another took his credit card to a cash machine. The victims said the assailants hurled anti-Semitic insults at them.

Over 1,000 migrants rescued in 48 hours from Mediterranean

[IsraelTimes] More than 1,000 migrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean Sea during several operations in the last 48 hours, and many more are expected to attempt the perilous journey as winter ends.

Rescuers found 332 people on Thursday in three separate rubber boats traveling north of the Libyan coast, according to Proactiva Open Arms, the nonprofit that operates the Golfo Azzurro rescue vessel. The Golfo Azzurro was escorting them to a port in Sicily.

Hungary to erect new fence to deter migrants

[IsraelTimes] The Hungarian government says it plans to start building a new fence on the border with Serbia in the spring because of the risk that large numbers of migrants may try to enter the country. Janos Lazar, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff, says that work on the second barrier will start as soon as weather conditions allow. Lazar says the government will spend some 38 billion forints ($130.7 million) on erecting the new fence and to set up shipping containers in transit zones at the Serbian border.

Asylum-seekers will be forced to wait there while their requests for protection are reviewed by Hungarian officials.

Wilders halts public activities after security leak

[IsraelTimes] Anti-Islam Dutch MP Geert Wilders and his far-right Freedom Party suspend all public activities after a police agent was arrested for allegedly leaking information about him to a Moroccan gang, as Dutch political parties gear up for a crunch election on March 15.

The firebrand MP, who has courted controversy with his hardline anti-Islam, anti-immigrant stance and his incendiary insults against Moroccans and Turks, has long been under 24-hour police protection.

Tensions are escalating ahead of the election in which the Freedom Party is running neck-and-neck with the Liberals of Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The Grand Turk
Despite detente with Israel, Turkey to host Hamas confab
[IsraelTimes] ’Paleostinians Abroad’ gathering, backed by Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", and Moslem Brüderbund, aims to unite Paleostinian diaspora for ’return’.

Despite the recent thawing of ties between Israel and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Istanbul is set to play host this weekend to a well-attended conference whose speakers and organizers are either affiliated with Hamas or once held senior posts in the Paleostinian terror group.

The Conference for Paleostinians Abroad is named for the group organizing the event. It has faced vociferous criticism from the Fatah-controlled Paleostinian Authority and Paleostine Liberation Organization, who accuse the organizers of undermining the PLO’s position as the sole legitimate representative of the Paleostinian people.

Hamas’s military wing is one of the bodies publicizing the event, slated for Saturday and Sunday, which is also hosting among its speakers members of the Moslem Brüderbund.

One of the leaders of the organizing group is Issam Moustafa Youssef, who the US Treasury Department has said was the head of Hamas’s political bureau at least until mid-2008.

Yusef, originally from Nablus in the northern West Bank, is currently a leader in the Interpal group, named a terror group by the US in 2003.

The event’s website presents a map of Israel with arrows pointing at the country and the caption "Our national plan -- the path of our return."

Other speakers include Majed a-Zir, who has been described in Egyptian media as "the regional director of Hamas in Europe." He is officially a member of the "Paleostinian Return Centre" in London, which Israel, at least, considers an illegal group.

Also on the list of speakers are media personalities such as Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
-based al-Jazeera anchor Jamal Rayyan and columnist Bashir Nafi, as well as Zaher Birawi, Rowan a-Damen, Ziad Aloul and others.

Hamas has held similar events not just in Turkey, but throughout Africa and Latin America. It uses the Moslem Brüderbund organizational infrastructures in those countries to organize the events, connect to activists, raise funds and engage in public relations worldwide.

IDF soldier lightly wounded in IED attack near Nablus
[IsraelTimes] In separate incident nearby, army nabs three Paleostinians holding pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails; another 13 people placed in durance vile elsewhere in West Bank.

A soldier was lightly maimed when an improvised bomb was thrown at him near the West Bank city of Nablus early Thursday morning, the army said. The soldier’s unit was on patrol in the Balata refugee camp as a group of Israeli Jews visited a pilgrimage site on the outskirts of the northern West Bank city.

After the IED attack, the soldier was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the Israel Defense Forces said.

An army spokesperson said she "was not aware" of any arrests made in connection to the IED.

The incident occured as troops were overseeing a visit of some 1,200 Jewish worshipers to the Joseph’s Tomb holy site in Nablus.

These pilgrimages occur on a monthly basis and are often flashpoints for Paleostinian Molotov cocktailings, rock throwings and other low level festivities between local residents and IDF troops.

three people in Nablus who were armed with a pipe bomb, two Molotov cocktails and a knife, the army said. No one was injured in the incident, and no damage was caused. The suspects were handed over to the police and Shin Bet for further interrogation, the IDF added.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, the army arrested 13 other Paleostinians for rock throwing and taking part in violent protests. Four of them were arrested in Aboud, outside Ramallah; four were picked up in Bayt Umar, near Hebron; four were from Qabatiya, outside Jenin; and one was arrested in Abu Dis, near Jerusalem.

Israeli Air Force shoots down Hamas drone

[Ynet] An Israeli Air Force fighter jet shot down an unmanned aircraft of Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",, which was making its way from the Gazoo Strip to the Mediterranean. The drone was shot down before it managed to infiltrate Israel, and fell into the sea after being intercepted.

The IDF front man said that "the IDF will not allow any airspace violation and will act resolutely against any such attempt."

Hamas-run school in East Jerusalem ordered shut

Illegal fundraiser for the Clintons made secret tape because he feared being assassinated over what he knew
[DAILYMAIL] A Chinese-American businessman at the center of a Clinton campaign finance scandal secretly filmed a tell-all video as an 'insurance policy' - because he feared being murdered.

In footage provided exclusively to DailyMail.com, Johnny Chung spills details on how he illegally funneled money from Chinese officials to Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election bid.

The Chinese-American Clinton fundraiser recorded the 'elaborate videotaped testimony' while in hiding in 2000. He smuggled it to trusted friends and family with instructions to release it to the media in the event of his untimely death because he believed he was at risk of being assassinated.

Chung is believed to still be alive and living in China. The video was obtained by author and historian David Wead for his new book Game of Thorns, which traces Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful 2016 campaign and the Chinese government's long-running operation to buy political influence in Washington.

Hundreds of scientists urge Trump to withdraw from U.N. climate-change agency
[Wash Times] More than 300 scientists have urged President Trump to withdraw from the U.N.’s climate change agency, warning that its push to curtail carbon dioxide threatens to exacerbate poverty without improving the environment.

In a Thursday letter to the president, MIT professor emeritus Richard Lindzen called on the United States and other nations to "change course on an outdated international agreement that targets minor greenhouse gases," starting with carbon dioxide.

"Since 2009, the US and other governments have undertaken actions with respect to global climate that are not scientifically justified and that already have, and will continue to cause serious social and economic harm -- with no environmental benefits," said Mr. Lindzen, a prominent atmospheric physicist.

Signers of the attached petition include the U.S. and international atmospheric scientists, meteorologists, physicists, professors and others taking issue with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC], which was formed in 1992 to combat "dangerous" climate change.

The 2016 Paris climate accord, which sets nonbinding emissions goals for nations, was drawn up under the auspices of the UNFCCC.

Government
U.S. reverses Obama-era move to phase out private prisons
[Reuters] The U.S. Justice Department has reversed an order by the Obama administration to phase out the use of private contractors to run federal prisons.

In a memo made public on Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Obama policy impaired the government's ability to meet the future needs of the federal prison system.

The Obama administration said in August 2016 it planned a gradual phase-out of private prisons by letting contracts expire or by scaling them back to a level consistent with recent declines in the U.S. prison population.

It said privately operated prisons were less safe and a poor substitute for government-run facilities.

#2  It said privately run prisons are less safe and a poor substitute for government-run facilities.

The problem here is that the foundations for those claims are dubious - at best. But if true, which it's not, the insinuation that somehow by virtue of Government operated these facilities are "safer" is nonsense. There may be legitimate reasons to consider such policies. But the basis for the Obama Administration prison policy was bogus.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Woman Arrested After Doing Cartwheels During Field Sobriety Test: Cops
A New Mexico woman who confidently performed a cartwheel for officers during a field sobriety test was nonetheless arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated last week.

Albuquerque PD were dispatched Friday evening after receiving reports of a black Volkswagen sedan that witnesses said was driving recklessly in the area.

When officers located a vehicle matching the description, they say it was parked partially in the road and partially in a driveway to a trailer park.

Cops say inside they found 23-year-old Bryelle Marshall apparently passed out behind the wheel.

"Marshall was asked to step out and appeared to be extremely intoxicated by stumbling and having a difficult time listening to officers commands," Albuquerque PD said in a statement.

Marshall was given instructions on how to perform a field sobriety test, but cops say she laughed and instead proceeded to perform cartwheels on the sidewalk.

An officer's bodycam shows a suspect complete one cartwheel before a second attempt ends less successfully.

Cops say Marshall struck an officer in the back on her second try before falling to the ground.

At this point Marshall's opportunity to complete the tests was over and she was arrested.

Marshall was asked by the officers to open her mouth to ensure she was not chewing gum, food or candy, a police release said. "This was to ensure the breath test would be accurate. However she refused to comply with the officers commands on this as well," the release said.

Despite the officers' self-described "extreme patience with Marshall," she was arrested and charged with battery, aggravated DWI and for an expired license plate.

Marshall has pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

4 dead Russian Diplomats in 3 months
[TheDuran.com] Russia's long time ambassador to the UN has died suddenly in New York - this is the fourth Russian diplomat who has died in the last 3 months.

Vitaly Churkin was one of the wisest voices in international diplomacy. His voice will no longer echo in the halls of the United Nations. Articulate, polite yet commanding, wise yet affable, he oversaw some of Russia’s and the world’s most important events in a position he occupied since 2006.

Churkin had to face a great deal of hostile criticism from both the Bush and Obama administrations during his time at the UN, but he always did so with grace. He never failed to explain the Russian position with the utmost clarity.

Standing next to some of his colleagues, he often looked like a titan in a room full of school children.

His death, a day before his 65th birthday, is a tragedy first and foremost for his family, friends and colleagues. It is also a deeply sad day for the cause of justice, international law and all of the principles of the UN Charter which Churkin admirably upheld in the face of great obstacles.

His death however raises many uncomfortable questions…

The outlet said the strike came as PMUs advanced further towards liberating areas south of the strategic Islamic State stronghold, coincidentally with advances by Iraqi government forces from southwestern Mosul toward the city’s airport and military camp.

Al-Hashd media service also said PMUs foiled an attack by Islamic State gunnies on Um al-Shabaab
it village, eradicating the entire assaulting group.

Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led military coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October to drive IS out of Mosul, the krazed killer group’s largest stronghold in Iraq which they conquered in 2014. The eastern area was recaptured late January.

Setting on the battle for western Mosul, Iraqi and coalition generals, who estimate the number of gunnies there by 3000, predicted a tougher battle, having to ensure the safety of at least 750.000 civilians trapped by IS in dense residential areas containing more than 100.000 buildings.

Southeast Asia
Indonesia may do joint patrols with Australia in South China Sea
Indonesia President Joko Widodo will discuss the prospect of joint patrols with Australia in the South China Sea when he meets his counterpart Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the weekend.

Widodo told The Australian newspaper he would like to see joint patrols with Australia, but only if did not further inflame tensions with China.

"If there is no tension I think it's very important to have the patrols together. We will discuss this with PM Turnbull," said Widodo.

Indonesia has traditionally taken a neutral position on the South China Sea, acting as a buffer between China and fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that have the most at stake, the Philippines and Vietnam.

But after China angered Indonesia by saying the two countries had "overlapping claims" to waters close to Indonesia's Natuna Islands, Jakarta staged large-scale exercise on the edge of South China Sea in October.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion worth of trade passes each year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to parts of the sea.

Australia - which says it takes no sides on South China Sea disputes but has supported U.S.-led freedom of navigation activities in the region - has been seeking to repair ties with Indonesia after their most recent spat. Indonesia suspended military cooperation with Australia in January after "insulting" teaching materials were found at an Australian base. While Australia's army chief apologized to Indonesia in February, military cooperation remains suspended.

Pakistan recalibrating capabilities to fight terrorists
[DAWN] As Death Eaters re-launched a campaign of terror against the nation this week, Pakistain too expedited its efforts to combat them and is quietly acquiring equipment and weapons required for combating militancy.

The US media reported at least three such deals this week, which involve helicopters and military vehicles that would enhance the military’s capability to pursue hard boyz in difficult terrains.

Earlier this week, Pakistain concluded a deal with an Italian aerospace and defence firm, Leonardo S.p.A. for purchasing an unspecified number of AW139 helicopters.

"The AW139 is the perfect fit to Pakistain’s operational environment, delivering outstanding capabilities with hot and high performance unmatched by any other existing helicopter type in the same class," said the firm while announcing the deal.

Despite uncertainty about bilateral relations under a new US administration, Pakistain is also purchasing weapons from the United States. Last year, the US Congress stopped the sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistain but the move did not affect the weapons needed to combat terrorists.

10 killed in explosion in Lahore's Defence area
[DAWN] A powerful kaboom in an under-construction building in Lahore's busy Defence Y Block Market left 10 people dead and more than 20 injured on Thursday.

There were conflicting reports regarding the nature of the blast. Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

government authorities initially claimed that the blast was the result of a "generator kaboom", but multiple sources, including Nayab Haider, a front man for Punjab police, later said the kaboom was caused by a bomb.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) corroborated the claim, saying that the blast "seems to have been made [sic] by some explosives".

"It will become clear later whether it was IED timer [a timed improvised bomb] or [a] remote-controlled device [and] whether the restaurant itself was [the] target or the explosive went off in transit," the spokesperson said.

"Since building has collapsed, true picture will emerge later on," the spokesperson added. "Info will be shared with media as early as possible."

Edhi sources confirmed that 10 people had died, with two bodies later recovered from the rubble.

The area where the first blast occurred is a busy locality with several commercial offices and eateries. Footage shows nearby offices including HBL, Toni and Guy, Gloria Jeans, Bombay Chowpatty, Jalalsons among others.

Japan’s Bald Men’s Club gather at hot spring to celebrate being follicly challenged
[SCMP] More than 30 bald men gathered at a hot spring facility in Tsuruta City, Japan, on Wednesday to show off their hairless heads and have fun.

Members of the city’s Bald Men Club took turns competing in a unique game of tug-of-war by sticking a suction cup, which is attached to a single red rope, to each of their heads. Both sides then attempt to pull the cup off of their opponent’s head.

"My head still hurts," Toshiyuki Ogasawara, 43, said with a smile. "I think I need to ice it!"

Masatomo Sasaki, 64, a first-time participant at the tournament, said he used to feel insecure about his baldness but now feels differently.

"I feel proud. Or maybe I should say, I feel good about being a bald man," Sasaki said, adding that he started losing his hair when he was 40. "And that is thanks to this bald men’s club."

The club, which has attracted roughly 65 members from all over the country since its founding in 1989, encourages people to "view baldness in a positive manner, to have fun, and to brighten the world with our shiny heads", according to its website.

by police in the eastern side of the city.

"The group issued this morning the first list of 143 of its members whom it described as ’delinquent’ for having escaped front defense lines in western Mosul," a local source told Alsumaria News on Thursday.

According to the source, the group distributed the list among members at its checkpoints and outposts in western Mosul in order to get fleeing fighter arrested.

Iraqi government forces, backed by paramilitary troops, launched Sunday a new phase of offensives against the Islamic State in Mosul, targeting the liberation of the western region after taking control over the east late January.

In eastern Mosul, Nineveh police chief, Brig. Gen. Wathiq al-Hamadani, said his forces arrested 18 members from the Islamic State at al-Qahera district.

Since recapturing the eastern section of Mosul, Islamic State Death Eaters have attacked liberated areas in that area with drones and sneaking murderous Moslems, killing several civilians and security personnel. Iraqi officials have also voiced fears that dormant IS cells in those areas could pose a security threat.

Why the Dutch turned against Muslim immigration
When she and her husband bought their house on the water in IJburg, the real estate agent didn't tell her the neighborhood would become the arena of what she calls a "social experiment" -- an effort by the city government to put middle class homeowners and social housing renters in one innovative urban development. The immigrants started moving in, brought over from suburbs where their cheap housing was demolished; 30% of IJburg housing turned out to be earmarked for the social renters.

Lammers said, "We have to share the gardens in some blocks, elevators in others. So people started experiencing bad things -- cars scratched, elevators urinated in. There's now a mosque on my street, a radical one." (The mosque's Facebook page, removed since locals complained to the authorities, contained references to a radical preacher and to Islamic Brotherhood, an organization some countries consider terrorist).

Some of Lammers immigrant neighbors soon found out what she was writing on her blog, and Moroccan youths started yelling "cancer whore" at her on the street, she says.

Arizona Senate Passes Bill To Seize Assets from Violent Far Left Rioters
[Gateway Pundit] Rioters caused over $100,000 in damages. Several conservative protesters were knocked out and beaten on the campus.

On Wednesday Republican state senators in Arizona passed legislation to seize assets from violent far left rioters. AZ Capitol Times reported:

Claiming people are being paid to riot, Republican state senators voted Wednesday to give police new power to arrest anyone who is involved in a peaceful demonstration that may turn bad -- even before anything actually happened.

SB1142 expands the state’s racketeering laws, now aimed at organized crime, to also include rioting. And it redefines what constitutes rioting to include actions that result in damage to the property of others.

But the real heart of the legislation is what Democrats say is the guilt by association -- and giving the government the right to criminally prosecute and seize the assets of everyone who planned a protest and everyone who participated. And what’s worse, said Sen. Steve Farley, D-Tucson, is that the person who may have broken a window, triggering the claim there was a riot, might actually not be a member of the group but someone from the other side.

a 26-year-old Salafist for allegedly planning a terror attack. State prosecutors said that bomb-making materials were found in his apartment in the picturesque town of Northeim.

Police believe that the young man was planning to target coppers or soldiers. They believe he wanted to lure them into "falling in a trap," where he would lay the explosives.

Later, prosecutors said that the man, who had German citizenship, had long been known to authorities as a radical Islamist. Uwe Luhrig, chief of police in the nearby city of Göttingen, said that rooting out suspected turbans was the highest priority for officers in the area.

This was the second incident of suspected terrorism in two weeks in the Göttingen area. A 22-year-old Nigerian and a 27-year-old Algerian were questioned by police on suspicion of plotting holy warrior violence. They were found in possession of improvised weapons, "Islamic State

Militiaman killed in Cotabato clash with commies
[Inquirer] A militiaman was killed when Philippine security forces and New People's Army insurgents clashed in Magpet, North Cotabato on Tuesday.

Military spokesman Silver Belvis said troops were conducting combat patrol in Sitio Buay-buay in Barangay Basak when shot at by NPA militants, who were positioned on higher ground. He said, "Our troops immediately established defensive position and engaged the rebels who withdrew toward the northwest direction of the village."

Belvis said the 15 militants came from the NPA's Southern Mindanao Regional Command that has been operating in the towns of Magpet, President Roxas and Arakan.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Far from Brooklyn, Iraq’s hipsters declare war on poor dress sense
[Iraq News] With their waxed mustaches, precision-clipped beards and dapper clothes, members of the Mr. Erbil gentleman’s club look like the smarter residents of Brooklyn or Shoreditch.

But rather than the hipster neighborhoods of New York or London, this is Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region ‐ just 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the grim battle to drive Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. fighters from their last bastion in the country.

Although an oasis of calm in a country torn apart by war since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, Erbil has been unable to provide its young people with the opportunities they crave, say the men who set up their club last year to change that.

"When we started we were in a bad situation, economic crisis and then an expected war against ISIS (Islamic State)," said Goran Pshtiwan, 26, wearing a three-piece suit and custom-made moccasins decorated with the club’s logo ‐ without socks, naturally.

"There was no business activity so we started with the idea to gather and make something different and unique and change the look of the people and the way that they are thinking."

As well as regular meetings where they dress in different styles, from smart casual to black tie and traditional Ottoman-time attire, the club aims to support local tailors and craftsmen who help make their outfits.

Accessorised with purple-trimmed handkerchiefs, pocket watch chains and selfie-sticks, the men, in their 20s and 30s, hold photoshoots at local beauty spots, posting the results on Instagram where they have more than 60,000 followers.

The buzz has surprised co-founder Omer Nihad, a 28-year-old former stock trader, who said Star Trek actor George Takei, who has more than 2 million Twitter followers, had mentioned the club.

A recent video they shot received 5 million views, he said.

While a boy’s only club, Mr. Erbil uses its internet platform to promote women who are working to improve rights and opportunities for girls.

The group has about 40 members and is receiving so many requests that the founders are considering toughening the admission requirements which already set demanding standards for fashion taste.

Nihad said the club aimed to launch its own clothing brand, set up a shop and collaborate with fashion houses. And he would love to see Mr. Erbil featured in a high fashion magazine.

"Of course, we don’t want to be on the front page," he said. "It is okay if we were in the middle!"

Britain
US could become ‘associate member’ of the Commonwealth
[Dhaka Tribune] The United States could eventually become an "associate member" of the Commonwealth, according to plans being drawn up by the Royal Commonwealth Society, reports the Telegraph. The move, which is said to have the backing of the Queen, is believed to have come about because of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s love of Britannia and the Royal Family.

With the UK making plans to leave the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, official are keen to build up international relations through the Commonwealth in a number of areas, including trade.

Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society Michael Lake told The Telegraph: "The UK rather left this treasure in the attic, and forgot about it because people were so glued to Brussels." Lake said the plans had been hastened by the "opportunity of a new president, and the slightly dangerous but great fun opportunity that the ’Bad Boys of Brexit’ offered."

In December, Lake wrote a letter to Trump, which was hand carried by Andrew Wigmore, a close aide to Nigel Farage, and then delivered by the former UKIP leader. Wigmore joined Farage and Arron Banks, the millionaire businessman in visiting Trump after the US election, and continues to have close ties with the administration.

Farage, who has emerged as a key ally of Trump, promoted the idea with senior aides, reportedly presenting the letter to Steve Bannon, the president’s chief strategist. He believes the Commonwealth alliance fits well with Trump’s foreign policy outlook.

A new branch of the Commonwealth Society has already opened in Helsinki, acting as a Baltic-Scandinavian hub, to help facilitate business ties with Commonwealth countries. Last year the Commonwealth Society opened a chapter in Dublin, as part of a campaign to help persuade the Republic to rejoin the alliance of 52 member states.

Sources indicate that Trump believes that the model of the Commonwealth fits well with his foreign policy outlook. Trump is understood to think that the former Commonwealth country India is a "true friend and partner", according to a phone call he had with the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Trump, whose mother is Scottish and a royalist, has also expressed his enthusiasm for building his connections with the Royal family.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea blames Malaysia for Kim Jong-nam’s death
[SCMP] North Korea blamed Malaysia on Thursday for the death of one of its citizens there last week and accused it of an "unfriendly attitude" in a scenario drawn up by South Korea, which has said Pyongyang agents assassinated the North Korean leader’s half-brother, Kim Jong-nam.

Malaysia had initially told North Korea the person bearing a diplomatic passport had died after suffering a heart attack at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13, Pyongyang’s state-run KCNA news agency said.

KCNA, citing a front man for a state committee, said Malaysia quickly changed its position and started to complicate the matter after reports surfaced in South Korea that the man was poisoned to death.

"What merits more serous attention is the fact that the unjust acts of the Malaysian side are timed to coincide with the anti-DPRK conspiratorial racket launched by the South Korean authorities," KCNA said, using the North’s formal name of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Malaysia, meanwhile, has requested Interpol put an alert out to apprehend four North Korean suspects, Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said on Thursday.

Police are also holding one North Korean man, but are seeking another seven in connection with the liquidation. Three of them ‐ a diplomat, a state airline official, and another man ‐ are believed to still be in Malaysia.

Khalid told news hounds a request had been made to Interpol to put out an alert to apprehend the four other suspects, who they believe have already made their way back to North Korea.

Khalid also said the police have sent an official request to the North Korean embassy requesting to interview the embassy’s second secretary and the airline official, having released their names on Wednesday.

"If you have nothing to hide, you should not be afraid to cooperate, you should cooperate," Khalid told news hounds.

North Korea’s state media, in the first official media report of the killing, did not name the person who died on the way to the hospital or acknowledge that he was the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, referring to him only as "a citizen of the DPRK".

"The biggest responsibility for his death rests with the government of Malaysia as the citizen of the DPRK died in its land," the KCNA report said.

The state media also blasted Malaysia for carrying out an "illegal and immoral" autopsy on Jong-nam.

"Malaysia is obliged to hand his body to the DPRK [North Korea] side as it made an autopsy and forensic examination of it in an illegal and immoral manner," the North’s Korean Jurists Commitee told KCNA.

Malaysia has not released the corpse "under the absurd pretext" that it needs a DNA sample from the dead man’s family.

"This proves that the Malaysian side is going to politicise the transfer of the body in utter disregard of international law and morality and thus attain a sinister purpose", it said.

The North’s statement repeated Pyongyang’s demand for a joint investigation, stressing it was ready to dispatch a delegation of its jurists.

On Wednesday, North Korea’s envoy called for Malaysia to release the North Korean citizen being held, along with two other women who have been detained.

"They should immediately release the innocent females from Vietnam and Indonesia as well as a DPRK citizen," ambassador Kang Chol said in a statement which repeated allegations that South Korea had influenced the probe.

The women must have been framed as they would have died if they had carried the poison in their hands, the ambassador claimed.

India-Pakistan
Another operation
[DAWN] TERRORIST outfits in the country have conveyed a chilling message over the last few weeks, and even yesterday in Lahore: no one is safe, neither civilians, nor law enforcement, nor the armed forces in the holy warriors’ escalating campaign of urban terrorism. And what seemed inevitable in the wake of this violence has now come to pass. A military operation has been launched across the country with the stated objectives of eradicating residual terrorist threats, consolidating the gains made in counterterrorism operations thus far and tightening security along the borders. The operation, codenamed Raddul Fasaad, entails coordinated action by all wings of the armed forces as well as paramilitary organizations, civilian law-enforcement agencies and intelligence outfits. Even though the offensive has a countrywide canvas, Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

-- that has long been a hotbed of violent holy warrior groups that the provincial government has treated with kid gloves -- is clearly the focus. This was underscored not least by the fact that the operation was announced after a high-level security meeting in Lahore chaired by the army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa.

Despite appearances however, Raddul Fasaad was not inevitable, had the government -- both at the centre and in the provinces -- not fallen short in countering extremism and terrorism. For this was the much-vaunted aim of the National Action Plan agreed upon in the anguish of post-APS Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
. The civilians were to supplement Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
that was targeting bandidos snuffies in northern Pakistain by taking action against hard-line madressahs, cracking down on terrorist cells in urban areas where such elements can easily find cover, initiating reforms in the criminal justice system, etc. Crucially, the centre and provinces had also pledged to craft a counter-narrative to push back against the poisonous ideology that has fuelled extremism in the country. Instead, they have demurred, obfuscated, clamoured for military courts and, most damningly, refused to acknowledge the dynamics of terrorism. Consider Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan’s statement that banned sectarian organizations could not be equated with terrorist outfits. Or take Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah’s shifting the blame for the Mall Road suicide kaboom in Lahore on protesters gathered there, or the fact that groups like the ASWJ have taken out rallies despite being banned.

The reality is that a military force can only carry out kinetic operations; it cannot effect a change in mindset. And extremism is a mindset, one that has percolated through society for decades now. Only the government can counter it through an intelligent use of the resources at its disposal, that too if it displays a steely resolve that has been lacking so far. At the same time, even while recognising that a level of secrecy is necessitated by the situation, transparency must inform the operation: the military should clarify who it is targeting and specify a time frame for the campaign. A vague, open-ended engagement is never good strategy.

Shaboobs seized Elhur from Galmudug forces
Fighters with the Al Qaeda-affiliated militant group Al shabaab have wrested control of a key location in central Somalia from Galmudug state forces on Thursday, residents confirmed.

Locals said Al shabaab fighters moved in the area, without encountering any resistance from regional forces, who are reported to have deserted the area before Al shabaab’s arrival.

Al shabaab fighters mounted in Land Cruisers battle wagons poured into Elhur, about 45Km away from the coastal city of Hobyo in southern Mudug region, following days of advances and movements. Galmudug state officials are yet to comment the capture of Elhur by Al shabaab.

Al shabaab has recently seized Amara near Haradhere town from Galmudug forces, and vowed to continue attacks against the areas under the control of pro-government troops.

Terror forever
[DAWN] AS the Soviet Union disintegrated in front of his very eyes, its last leader Mikhail Gorbachev uttered quite possibly the most prescient words of his entire political life: the demise of global communism would deprive the United States of its most visible enemy, the artefact justifying its imperialist adventures around the world. Gorbachev understood that Washington would have to devise a new ideological ’other’ to retain a mandate to intervene whenever and wherever it wanted.

More than a quarter of a century later, one would have to be living under a rock to be unaware that ’terrorism’ has become the great ’other’ of the self-proclaimed ’free world’ (read: the US-dominated world order). The same American-led ’free world’ that once decried communism as the antithesis of human civilisation. Gorbachev’s warning was heeded, and how.

We Paks were part of the anti-communist bandwagon then, just like we are part of the anti-terrorist bandwagon now. The irony of history is that at least some of the same proxies that we cultivated to wage holy war against the Soviet Union metamorphosed into faceless myrmidons that we want to hunt down now.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian security service stages kidnapping of deputy

A deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's national parliament, was a participant in a staged kidnapping by Ukraine's top security agency, the SBU, according to Ukrainian language news accounts.

Alexey Goncharenko reportedly was taken by a group of armed men in Kiev Thursday morning, according to a news account in korrespondent.net. He was released unharmed only a few hours later

Goncharenhko is a member of Ukrainian president Petr Poroshenko's voting block.

According to numerous news accounts, the SBU received information that Goncharenko was the target of a kidnap plan by local separatists in the Odessa region. The articles say that video had surfaced involving a local government deputy in the village of Limanskoye in the Odessa region, identified as Aleksandr Kushnarev. Kushnarev is shown in the video discussing torture.

According to a separate news report which appeared in strana.ua, the SBU sponsored kidnapping was executed in order to deprive Kushnarev of his target.

News accounts say that Kushnarev's son was killed in the May 2nd, 2014 Odessa Trades Union Hall building fire, which Russian separatists claimed was a cover for brutal attacks against Russian speaking separatists by local groups tied to the then new Maidan Ukrainian government. Russian separatists claimed that most of the people killed in the incident were murdered, a charge the government denies. It is stated in the articles that Kushnarev's plan was for vengeance for his son's death.

Yet another strana.ua report said that Kushnarev's son, identified as Gennady Kushnarev, at that time had been autopsied and the cause of death was said to be asphyxia caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The autopsy also stated that Gennady was found in a pool of his own blood, which meant foul play could not be ruled out.

The Trades Union Hall fire is one of the galvanizing incidents which ethnic Russian separatists cite as proof the Ukrainian government intended to attack ethnic Russians in Ukraine.

According to the strana.ua report, remarks by Goncharenko about the incident, which were characterized as flippant, angered Kushnarev. Goncharenko himself was not involved in the May 2nd, 2014 incident.

The strana.ua report said that Kushnarev planned to torture Goncharenko by using an acid attack and by breaking his kneecaps. The report said that an Odessa local prosecutor, Oleg Zhuchenko, had ordered the arrest of three men including Kushnarev, all of whom were said to be involved in the planning of the kidnapping.

Instead of condemnation, the incident has received ridicule, including from deputies in Goncharenko's own voting block. Some have posted production stills from obscure Ukrainian comedy films depicting kidnappings.

Madrid invites Airbus CEO to debrief on military plane woes
We need the original 'flying turkey' pic back!
Spain has invited the head of Airbus to travel to Madrid next month to brief defence officials about its troubled A400M military transport plane, the defence ministry said Friday.

The A400M was commissioned jointly in 2003 by the governments of Germany, Belgium, France, Britain, Luxembourg, Spain and Turkey, but since its delayed launch in 2013 it has run into difficulty, with delays in delivery of the plane.

A spokesman for the ministry told AFP Airbus CEO Tom Enders had asked to meet representatives from these countries, and Spain's junior defence minister Agustin Conde had responded by inviting him and defence officials from those nations to Madrid.

"He sent him a letter inviting him to attend a meeting with the programme's partner countries, on March 30 in Madrid," the spokesman said.

It is unclear exactly why Enders has called the meeting, but on Wednesday he told reporters that the group would ask clients to refrain from imposing further penalties over delivery delays.

Originally planned for 2011, the plane's launch was delayed until 2013. The A400M's delivery has also run into substantial delays due to a string of technical problems and different requests from the governments.

An A400M plane crashed during a test in May 2015 near Seville in Spain, killing four of the six people on board and seriously injuring the two others.

And new faults were discovered in the propellor engines last year.
The engines are turboprops...
On Wednesday, Airbus said its profits nosedived in 2016 due to charges related to problems with the plane.

Speaking to reporters when the group announced the results, Enders said that Airbus needed "the cooperation of clients... to push the programme forward and end the haemorrhaging."

The Spanish defence ministry spokesman said Enders had "surprised the seven partner countries with declarations to the media about difficulties encountered in the development of the programme".

"So Mr. Conde invited Mr. Enders to tell the junior ministers (attending the March meeting) about the problems faced by the A400M programme".

The German government, the main customer for Airbus' military aircraft, this week urged the firm to live up to its contractual obligations and deliver the promised A400M jets.

Airbus delivered 17 A400M in 2016, compared with 11 in 2015 and has delivered two of the military transport planes so far this year.
Could have bought C-130s or C-17s and been done with it...

Bangladesh
Four star US general concerned over AQIS presence in Bangladesh
[Dhaka Tribune] Former NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
Allied Land Command leader General John W Nicholson expressed growing concerns regarding al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) activities in Bangladesh.

In a February 22 interview with Combating Terrorism Center’s (CTC) magazine Sentinel, the Commander of Resolute Support and US Forces-Afghanistan said: "With our growing relationship with India, we are concerned about the instability in Bangladesh, and we have seen a lot of AQIS interference in Bangladesh."

Since al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
’s announcement in September 2014 regarding the formation of AQIS to move the group’s activities into India, Pakistain and Bangladesh, the governments of Bangladesh and the US refused to admit their presence.

On June 30 last year, however, the US government issued a statement blacklisting AQIS as a "foreign terrorist organization" and its leader, Indian-born Asim Umar
...chief of al-Qaeda's Sharia Committee for Pakistain, named head of al-Qaeda in India. His video appearances are frequently accompanied by clips of al Qaeda's senior propagandist in Pakistan, Ahmad Farooq. Umar the author of The Army of Anti-Christ: Blackwater, Documentation of the Dreadful Terrorist Activities of America's Blackwater in Islamic Countries...
, a "specially designated global terrorist."

AQIS involvement in Bangladesh surfaced through Dawahilallah, a forum of AQIS or local al-Qaeda representatives Ansar al-Islam.

In October last year, forum members instigated attacks on the Hindus of Nasirnagar when the local Moslem hardliners attacked the area, protesting an allegedly blasphemous Facebook post by a Hindu youth.

Subsequently, in December 15, al-Qaeda published a public statement urging the Moslem youths of Bangladesh to join the fight to avenge the persecution against the Rohingyas.

Speaking of a US Forces raid in Shorabak district of Kandahar in October 2015, Nicholson claimed they had found congratulatory notes going back and forth between AQIS and al-Qaeda about some of their activities in Bangladesh.
Though he did not specify the exact contents of the notes, it is highly possible it was in reference to the holy warrior activities carried out in Bangladesh in the October-December period last year.

"Of course, al-Qaeda is very focused right now on the survival of their big shotship, but they are connected to these guys as well. They all share the same agenda and the same focus," cautioned Nicholson.

[Reuters] VX nerve agent, a chemical on a U.N. list of weapons of mass destruction, was used to kill the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in last week's bizarre murder in a busy Kuala Lumpur airport, Malaysian police said on Friday.

Kim Jong Nam died on Feb. 13 after being assaulted by two women who wiped the toxic chemical on his face as he prepared to board a flight to Macau at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Police arrested the two women - one Vietnamese and the other Indonesian - and a North Korean man last week. They are also seeking seven other North Koreans wanted in connection with the case, including a diplomat at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

South Korean and U.S. officials have said they believe North Korean agents assassinated Kim Jong Nam, who had been living in the Chinese territory of Macau under Beijing's protection.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkey-backed Syrian rebels seize control in almost all of al-Bab
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
-backed Syrian rebels have seized control of almost all of Syria’s al-Bab and are now working to find and clear mines, Turkey’s defense minister told state-run Anadolu news agency on Thursday.

The Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
, backed by Turkish tanks, warplanes and special forces, have entered the center of al-Bab, a town they have been besieging for weeks, Isik said in an interview with Anadolu.

Turkey launched its Syrian operation, dubbed "Operation Euphrates Shield," in August, an effort to push ISIS from its border and stop the advance of a Syrian Kurdish militia.

Taking control of al-Bab, an ISIS stronghold 30 km (20 miles) from the Turkish border, would deepen Turkish influence in an area of Syria where it has effectively created a buffer zone and would allow the Ankara-backed forces to press on towards Raqqa, ISIS’s de facto capital in Syria.

The Free Syrian Army fighters, a loose coalition of Syrian Arabs and Turkmen, have been attacking al-Bab since December, aided by Turkish warplanes, tanks and special forces.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, citing its correspondent in al-Bab, said the rebels had seized control of the town center and were now clearing mines and bombs laid by the myrmidons. Some 1,900 square kilometers (734 square miles) in northern Syria has now been cleared of Death Eater groups, it said.

"We had reached the city center yesterday but there was a suicide kaboom so we had to withdraw a little bit. And today we attacked again. I can say that 85-90 percent of the city is under control," a fighter from the Sultan Murad Brigade who is in al-Bab told Rooters by telephone.

"They have dug tunnels all under Bab and those who have remained are all jacket wallahs. The whole of the city is mined. I can say that every meter is mined."

Lost pilot lands to ask for directions

#1  (Groan) There has to be a joke in there somewhere like this old one:

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position and course to fly to the airport.

The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign, and held it in the helicopter's window. The pilot's sign said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign and held it in a building window. Their sign read: "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at her map, determined the course to fly to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how the "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their position.

The pilot responded "I knew that had to be the Microsoft building because, like their technical support, online help and product documentation, the response they gave me was technically correct, but completely useless."

New Orleans JCC briefly evacuated over bomb threat
[IsraelTimes] The Jewish community center in New Orleans was evacuated on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the latest JCC to be targeted, capping a week of similar scares at other US Jewish institutions.

A phone call threatening a kaboom was made to the JCC at 9:15 a.m., Katie Steiner of WWL-TV in New Orleans reported in a Twitter post. People were allowed back into the building about two hours after they were evacuated.

JCC staffers told another WWL news hound, Lyons Yellin, who was working out at the facility, that the bomb threat was a recording.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu tweeted Thursday that "anti-Semitism will not be tolerated" in the city and said the FBI was investigating.

Heh. Possibly of interest to non-Orleanians, the infrastructure in the foreground of that photo belongs to the St. Charles streetcar, the uptown parade route passing a km down to the left. Great walks thereabouts: Latter Library, pretty little Jewish cemetery, Langenstein's. Various po-boy shops and whatnot over toward the river. Back across St. Charles, more cemeteries... bunch of gentrified bullshit... Borsodi's. Sigh.

MEGA-DISASTER WARNING: ‘Earthquake and tsunami surge could start TOMORROW'
POWERFUL tsunami-causing tremors could strike Earth over the next fortnight from TOMORROW, because of the alignment of the planets, it has shockingly been claimed.
Just in time! Now I don't have to do my taxes...
A self-styled earthquake predictor is warning of a magnitude eight or higher quake hitting the planet in just nine days on March 4.

’Quake mystic’
Now, there's a moniker I'd like to use in an introduction.
Looks good on your resume.
Frank Hoogerbeets has issued an online "major earthquake warning" amid fears a "big one" is on its way.

Mr Hoogerbeets, who is based in the Netherlands, uses a non-scientifically recognised way of predicting earthquakes based on planetary alignments with Earth. He wrote on his website ditrianum.org: "In the last week of February and the first week of March there will likely be a significant increase in seismic activity with the highest probability of an eight plus magnitude earthquake around March 4."

Mr Hoogerbeets claims the positions of the planets and the moon have an impact on tectonic plate movement here on earth.

He added: "The anticipated seismic increase starting around February 24 will contrast sharply with only a few planetary alignments from the last week of January to the third week of February."
Meh...we've had a good run.

Southeast Asia
Thai army claims breakthrough pact with insurgents
[Reuters] Thailand's military has reached a breakthrough agreement with a Muslim separatist group to create a safety zone in the southern provinces. The army has been negotiating with Mara Pattani, a longstanding umbrella group that claims to speak for the rebels.

Major General Sithi Trakulwong, "Both sides have agreed to the creation of a safety zone in one of the three southern provinces to show their good faith. This is the most progress we've made in over two years of negotiations."

Sithi said the agreement would be finalized next week in Malaysia, once senior government officials arrive to conclude the talks.

Talks between the Thai government and the rebels began in 2013 under then Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, but stalled after the military coup in 2014.

Some analysts say the government is negotiating with a group comprised mostly of exiled fighters that is not influential on the ground. The rebel group Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), which has been left out of negotiations, is now the main actor in the southernmost provinces, they say.

Maoist militants vow to release six captives soon
[Inquirer] Maoist militants in Mindanao on Thursday said they were finalizing the release of six soldiers, militiamen and a policeman in their custody even while fighting continues on the ground.

Joaquin Jacinto, spokesman for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines in Mindanao, identified four of those set to be released. He said two other captives would be released by the New People's Army unit holding them. Jacinto said the decision to release their captives was a "gesture of support for the resumption of formal talks between the [government] and the NDFP."

In an earlier statement, Maj. Gen. Rafael Valencia, commander of the military’s 10th Infantry Division, said President Duterte ordered the military to continue the offensive against NPA militants even while efforts to rescue their captives were continuing. He said if NPA insurgents were serious about talking peace, they should lay down their arms and stop their attacks on government troops and other targets.

Science
The race for autonomous cars is over. Silicon Valley lost.
Up until very recently the talk in Silicon Valley was about how the tech industry was going to broom Detroit into the dustbin of history. Companies such as Apple, Google, and Uber - so the thinking went -were going to out run, out gun, and out innovate the automakers. Today that talk is starting to fade. There's a dawning realization that maybe there's a good reason why the traditional car companies have been around for more than a century.

Last year Apple laid off most of the engineers it hired to design its own car. Google (now Waymo) stopped talking about making its own car. And Uber, despite its sky high market valuation, is still a long, long way from ever making any money, much less making its own autonomous cars.

To paraphrase Elon Musk, Silicon Valley is learning that "Making rockets is hard, but making cars is really hard." People outside of the auto industry tend to have a shallow understanding of how complex the business really is. They think all you have to do is design a car and start making it. But most startups never make it past the concept car stage because the move to mass production proves too daunting. Even Tesla, the only successful automotive company to come out of Silicon Valley so far, made but 80,000 cars last year and it's been in business for nearly 15 years.

When it came to autonomous cars the tech industry thought it would monopolize the technology, then dictate terms to the traditional Original Equipment Manufacturers. But the big OEMs did not sit on their hands. Ford, GM, Audi, Mercedes, Nissan and others launched vigorous in-house autonomous programs. So did a number of traditional Tier 1 suppliers like Delphi. They're now fully competitive. And they've been buying Silicon Valley companies to bolster their efforts, not the other way around.

This is where most in the Valley missed a crucial point. The history of the auto industry shows that all technologies get whittled down to a handful of global suppliers who then get caught up in a cost-cutting race to the bottom. When the tech companies decided to go after autonomous cars they were not dreaming of simply becoming automotive suppliers. It never dawned on them that maybe they'd only end up making - at best - 10% profit margins, not the 40% margins the Valley investment community feeds on.

Yet, while companies like Google and Apple are giving up on making cars, they're not giving up on the auto industry. There is another area where Silicon Valley could play a dominant role and it's all about accessing car-based data.

India-Pakistan
Militants, facilitators behind shrine blast traced, CM told
[DAWN] KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has constituted three different teams to catch the murderous Moslems, their controllers and those involved in carrying out reconnaissance for carrying out suicide kaboom at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar.

Sources said that the perpetrators of last Thursday’s blast that claimed the lives of over 88 people in Sehwan were traced from the call data records and the footage of CCTV cameras installed at the shrine.

Mr Shah formed the three committees at a high-level meeting he chaired late on Tuesday night. Chief Secretary Rizwan Memon, Inspector General of Police A.D. Khowaja, Principal Secretary to CM Naveed Kamran Baloch, Counter-Terrorism Department chief Sanaullah Abbasi, Brig Nadir Hussain of Rangers, Home Secretary Qazi Shahid Parvaiz and other bigwigs were also present.

One of the three teams was sent to Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

for arresting some people belonging to the banned Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
who had been identified as "controllers" of the man who went kaboom! in the Qalandar’s shrine.

The second team was dispatched to Wadh and Jhal Magsi in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
to trace some suspects who were in telephonic contact with those carrying out the attack.

The third team, of which the Rangers were also a part, was sent to Dadu, Shahdadkot, Jacobabad and Shikarpur for the arrest of those who took part in recce before the blast and had brought the jacket wallah to the shrine for carrying out the attack.

The sources said that the meeting was told that some 10 suspects were tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in Dadu and Sehwan. Of them, six persons had been cleared after initial grilling and the remaining ones were being questioned.

The CM also constituted a high-powered committee led by the Rangers director general and comprising bigwigs of police and other law-enforcement agencies to make security plans, hold regular meetings and share threat alerts.

This committee would have a subcommittee, which would keep the chief minister apprised about day-to-day activities.

He also asked all the agencies to investigate the blast separately and share their findings with each other.

Earlier, the chief minister was briefed about the suspected controllers of the shrine attack who had been identified with the help of CCTV footage.

The chief minister was also informed that the Sherlocks had obtained the record of the calls made from the shrine before and after the blast. The call record gave Sherlocks solid clues to draw their conclusion.

Mr Shah was told that the police and security agencies in other provinces were cooperating with the Sherlocks probing the shrine blast. "If we successfully worked out this case then we would be able to stop such incidents in future," the CM told the meeting.

The CM also issued directives for ensuring the security of "soft targets". He was informed that the police and other agencies deployed their people in plainclothes at important places, where CCTV coverage was also being improved.

He was also informed about the details of the operation launched in different districts of the province and the number of arrests made so far.

Malaysia names North Korean diplomat wanted for questioning in Kim murder case
[DAWN] Malaysian police on Wednesday named a North Korean diplomat along with a state airline official who are wanted for questioning over the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korea’s leader.

Kim Jong Nam, 46, was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb 13, while preparing to board a flight to Macau, where he lived in exile with his family under the protection of Beijing.

South Korean and US officials believe the killing of the elder half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
was an liquidation carried out by agents of the North.

Kim Jong Nam had spoken out publicly against his family’s dynastic control of the isolated, nuclear-armed state.

Giving an update on an investigation that has already angered North Korea, Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the diplomat wanted for questioning was 44-year-old Hyon Kwang Song, a second secretary at the embassy.

Police also want to interview Kim Uk Il, 37, an employee of the North Korean state-owned airline Air Koryo.

Khalid said both were in Malaysia but could not confirm they were in the embassy.

"They’ve been called in for assistance. We hope the embassy will cooperate with us and allow us to interview them quickly or else we will compel them to come to us," he told news hounds.

"We can’t confirm that they are hiding in the embassy," he said.

So far, police have identified a total of eight North Koreans suspected of being linked to the killing.

One, Ri Jong Chol, has been in jug since last week, and another, Ri Ji U, remains on the lam.

Khalid said police "strongly believed" four others were back in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, having fled Malaysia on the day of the attack.

Police have not stated Ri Jong Chol’s role in the killing. He lived in Malaysia for three years without working at the company registered on his employment permit or receiving a salary.

Police are also holding two women -- one Vietnamese, one Indonesian -- who are suspected of carrying out the fatal assault on Kim Jong Nam using a fast-acting poison.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
130 bodies found in Syria mass graves
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The bodies of some 130 fighters shot execution-style or beheaded by rival gunnies have been found in mass graves in northwestern Syria, a monitoring group and rebel sources said Thursday.

The grim discovery comes nearly a week after festivities in Idlib province between the krazed killer Jund al-Aqsa rebel group and al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate and allied factions.

At least 131 bodies were found on Wednesday and Thursday in two separate mass graves near the town of Khan Sheikun, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Some had been shot and others beheaded.

Last week the bodies of 41 rebel fighters had been found near the same town, said the Britannia-based monitoring group.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said Jund al-Aqsa had detained the fighters and then "executed" them.

Mohammad Rashid, a front man for the rebel Jaish al-Nasr group, also reported the deaths but put the number of bodies found at 128.

According to him, 71 of those killed were fighters from his group.

"Three citizen journalists and 11 commanders were among them," said Rashid.

A source from the civil defence also reported that 128 bodies had been recovered from two graves inside a former army barracks that had been occupied by Jund al-Aqsa.

Jund al-Aqsa, which is considered close to ISIS, is reviled by most rebels in the region and is designated a "terrorist group" by Washington.

Earlier this month, Jund al-Aqsa had been locked in festivities with Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
, the former al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, after tensions over influence in Idlib, a province held by rebels.

Fateh al-Sham was fighting alongside several allied groups in a coalition dubbed Tahrir al-Sham, and the battles spread beyond Idlib to neighboring Hama province.

According to the Observatory, Jund al-Aqsa fighters have pulled back to Hama and to other areas.

More than 310,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests.

The war has become a complex multi-front conflict, drawing in krazed killer groups and international armies.

to distribute aid have been released, the Norwegian Refugee Council said on Thursday.

"We are greatly relieved by the release of our staff members and the driver," said Mutasim Hamdan, the organization’s Yemen country director.

"They are in good condition, and we are pleased that they are now reunited with their families," Hamdan said in a statement.

Houthis in the Red Sea coastal district of Hudaydah detained six staff and a contracted driver - all Yemeni citizens - earlier this week.

Local sources told AFP the employees were accused of having accepted and distributed aid from the Arab coalition, which has been supporting the legitimate government headed by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The Norwegian Refugee Council, an independent aid group based in Oslo, said it did not receive funding from Saudi Arabia for its relief operations in Yemen.

It had, however, been using recycled boxes to distribute hygiene kits in Yemen.

The group said when staff had opened the boxes to distribute the aid, the inside read "The campaign of the King of the Arabians, Sheikh of the Burning Sands, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for emergency response," a reference to the Saudi king.

The boxes were dated January 2015 and had originally been used for food, according to the NRC.
