What YOU Can do to Save the Planet
[WaPo, but on page three of today's Dallas News] For many Americans, the first step to helping to save a million plant and animal species from being wiped out starts at the front porch.
Walk or ride a bike. Maybe car pool. Leave the CO2-belching behemoth in the garage.

Lush green lawns are a tradition that dates back to the arrival of European colonists. But they are also an environmental nightmare that strips away shrubs, flowers and weeds, which thousands of animals need for habitat and food.
I already have enough bunnies in my yard, and they just annoy the dog.

Grass yards are the nation’s largest irrigated crop, covering "more than three times the number of acres that irrigated corn covers," according to NASA. They suck up 9 billion gallons of water per day, the Environmental Protection Agency says, enough in a year to fill the Chesapeake Bay, one of the largest estuaries in the world.
Anybody ever hear of the hydrologic cycle? Water is not used up and wasted. What goes on your lawn either evaporates, transpires into the air from the plant, (after helping it grow) or finds its way into the nearby creek - eventually.

Last week’s United Nations biodiversity report was deeply troubling in the way it linked the plundering of nature and the disappearance of species to human survival, and many people wondered what they can do.
Stop surviving. Take your own life and let nature reclaim your carcass.

While the world’s governments could spend decades considering the recommendations in the report, which said human activity has driven a million plant and animal species to the verge of extinction, individuals can help now by saving more water, burning less energy, using fewer pesticides, ditching their commutes by working from home and reimagining the emerald carpet of turf that surrounds it.
The "emerald carpet" - doesn't it take CO2 out of the air and provide oxygen?

The U.N. panel that produced the 1,500-page report on global biodiversity loss said the problem is as big and frightening as global warming because human survival depends on the very resources humans are destroying.
So I guess that make me a biodiversity loss-denier.

Watson said small steps taken by people every day can start to make a difference. "More walking, more cycling, more mass transportation, car sharing, telecommuting, all of those things," he said. "The less resources we need, the less pressure on the environment. People turning off the tap while they’re brushing their teeth. Not using a huge amount of water washing the car every bloody Sunday."
OK, fine.

Wetlands and rivers that support fish and hundreds of other creatures are also being drained to support human consumption, the report said. Water is often funneled to development, ranches and farms and industries that produce everything from food to steel to paper.
Right, because all that water just disappears, never to be seen again. Wait, what was that hydrologic cycle thing again?

In the United States, farms are responsible for displacing tens of millions of acres of insect habitat. Not only do farmers spray poisons that kill the animals, but in the Midwest, they removed wild prairie land that preserved the soil and sustained thousands of species of bugs and birds. Oh, yeah? Well, whaddabout this? Saving the planet with more cows [video]

Home Front: Culture Wars
Inside Google's Civil War
[Fortune] It started in Tokyo on Nov. 1, 2018, when 100 employees walked out of Google’s office at 11:10 a.m. local time. Thirteen hours later, the elevators at the company’s New York City headquarters were so packed that workers took the stairs down to the street to protest. Google employees in Austin observed two minutes of silence for victims of sexual assault as part of their demonstration. In San Francisco, hundreds of employees gathered across from the historic Ferry Building and chanted "Time’s Up at Google" and held signs with slogans like "Workers’ Rights Are Women’s Rights" and "Free Food ≠ Safe Space."

After Googlers in Sydney walked out, 25 hours after Asia had kicked things off, 20,000 Google employees in 50 cities around the world had joined their colleagues to protest the company’s handling of sexual harassment.

The spark that ignited the walkout was a New York Times article that had appeared a week earlier, reporting that Google paid former executive Andy Rubin a $90 million exit package, despite facing a sexual misconduct accusation Google deemed credible. (In a statement to the Times, Rubin said the story contained "numerous inaccuracies about my employment.")

It was the first time the world had seen such a massive worker protest erupt out of one of the giants of the technology industry‐and certainly the first time outsiders got a glimpse at the depth of anger and frustration felt by some Google employees. But inside the Googleplex, the fuel that fed the walkout had been collecting for months. Tensions had been on the rise as employees clashed with management over allegations of controversial business decisions made in secret, treatment of marginalized groups of employees, and harassment and trolling of workers on the company’s internal platforms. "It’s the U.S. culture war playing out at micro-scale," says Colin McMillen, an engineer who left the company in February.

To many observers, the tech workforce‐notoriously well-paid and pampered with perks‐hardly seems in a position to complain. And it’s a surprising tune to hear from employees of one of the titans of Silicon Valley, a place that has long worshipped at the altar of meritocracy and utopian techno-futurism. But in the past few years, the industry’s de facto mission statement‐change the world (and make money doing it!)‐has been called into question as examples of tech’s destructive power multiply, from election interference to toxicity on social media platforms to privacy breaches to tech addiction. No one is closer to tech’s growing might, as well as its ethical quandaries, than the employees who help create it. "People are beginning to say, ’I don’t want to be complicit in this,’ " says Meredith Whittaker, who leads Google’s Open Research group and is one of the walkout organizers. Workers are beginning to take responsibility, she says: "I don’t see many other structures in place right now that are checking tech power."

Hang the ISIS Beatles, says CIA boss: Spy chief who helped hunt down and kill Jihadi John says putting his fellow Londoners on trial in the UK would be an 'epic disaster'
[DailyMail] The spymaster who oversaw the hunt for Islamic State’s most callous killers has warned that allowing two members of the evil ‘Beatles’ execution gang to stand trial in the West would be a ‘disaster of epic proportions’.

Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh are suspected of being part of the vile IS kidnap and execution cell led by Mohammed Emwazi, also known as Jihadi John, whose gruesome beheading videos appalled the world.

Emwazi was killed in a drone strike in November 2015, while Kotey, known by terrified captives as Ringo, and Elsheikh, who was nicknamed George, were captured by Kurdish forces in January 2018 and are locked up in northern Syria.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea Seeing Worst Drought in a Century
“...This is known as ‘bad luck.’ “

— Robert A. Heinlein
[AnNahar] North Korea is experiencing its worst drought in over a century, official media reported Friday, days after the World Food Programme expressed "very serious concerns" about the situation in the country.

The isolated, impoverished North -- which is under several sets of sanctions over its nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programmes -- has long struggled to feed itself, and suffers chronic food shortages.

It recorded its worst harvest for a decade last year, according to the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, down by 500,000 tonnes as natural disasters combined with its lack of arable land and inefficient agriculture to hit production.

In the year to Wednesday the North received just 56.3 millimetres of rain or snow, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported Friday, the lowest since 1917.

Water was running out in the country's lakes and reservoirs, said the paper, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, adding: "The ongoing drought is causing a significant effect on the cultivation of wheat, barley, corn, potatoes and beans."

In their most recent estimates, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme (WFP) said about 10.1 million North Koreans -- 40 percent of the population -- were suffering from severe food shortages, a similar figure to recent years.

Hundreds of thousands are believed to have died during a famine in the mid to late 1990s, a period known as the "Arduous March" in the North.

Drone strikes, hunger strikes: Kurds in Turkey up the ante
[Rudaw] Turks everywhere solemnly honor November 10, 1938 and its anniversaries as a day of mourning. That’s when the founder of their country‐Ataturk, the so-called father of the Turks‐died of liver failure due to alcoholism.

In The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, Turks stop work to observe his passing. Kurds are also expected to take part in these involuntary rituals. Our children do since their teachers leave them with no choice but to mourn and praise the "deathless" Turk.

Two guards killed in suspected Islamic State attack outside Libyan oilfield
[AlAhram] Two guards were killed and four others were kidnapped early on Saturday in a suspected Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
attack targeting Libya’s Zella oilfield, a security source said.

The attackers struck at an entrance gate to the field, which lies near the town of Zella about 760 km (470 miles) southwest of the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. They killed the two guards before fleeing, the source and local residents asking not to be named told Rooters.

Islamic State grabbed credit for the attack through its Aamaq news agency later on Saturday.

The Zella field belongs to Zueitina Oil Company, which pumped 19,000 barrels per day on average in the last quarter of 2018 across all its fields.

An engineer told Rooters workers at the field were safe and facilities had not been damaged.

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) chief said on Saturday continued instability in the country could cause it to lose 95 percent of oil production.

Speaking in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
ahead of a ministerial panel gathering on Sunday of top OPEC and non-OPEC producers, Mustafa Sanalla also confirmed the Zella attack.

Islamic State has been active in Libya in the turmoil since the overthrow of Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
in 2011. The krazed killer group took control of the coastal city of Sirte in 2015 but lost it late in 2016 to local forces backed by U.S. air strikes.

In the last two years, the group has targeted three state institutions in Tripoli, home of UN-backed government of national accord led by Prime Minister Fayez Serraj.

Saturday’s assault took place as general Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...

Mubarak remembers: Ashraf Marwan was a double agent and was hanged in Israel
[Jpost] A former Egyptian president has revealed to a Kuwaiti journalist that Abdel Nasser’s son-in-law was not a Mossad spy, but had given false information to Israeli intelligence.

Kuwaiti journalist Fajr al-Said tweeted this week that the deposed Egyptian president, Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak, has confirmed in an interview that Ashraf Marwan was not a spy for Israel, but was in fact a double agent who gave false information to Israeli intelligence and was hanged in the Jewish State.

Mubarak also revealed more details about the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

A-Said interviewed Mubarak for a piece that is expected to be published on Monday in al-Anba, an Arabic-language Kuwaiti daily newspaper.

During the conversation, the former president said, "Ashraf Marwan was not a spy for Israel, it was [Anwar] Sadat who cleared him of all suspicion and said that he was passing false information on to those who believed that they had recruited him."

Mubarak also referred to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the consequences of US President Donald Trump

Marwan was married to Mona Gamal Abdel Nasser, President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s daughter. He also served as a close adviser to Sadat. There are several versions of the story about his cooperation with Israel over the years. While some believe he was a spy, others say he was a double agent.

He is believed to have been the individual who passed on the information about Egyptian preparations for the Yom Kippur War to the Jewish state.

On June 27, 2007, Marwan was found dead outside of his apartment in London. It is not clear whether he fell, jumped or was pushed off the apartment’s balcony.

Controversy even surrounded his death. While his wife believed the Israeli Mossad murdered her husband, other accounts said he was killed by Egyptian agents for spying for Israel. After his death, Mubarak claimed that the rumors he spied for Israel were a lie.

In 2018, the Netflix film, The film "The Angel," recounted Marwan’s story.

UK PM May says Brexit legislation new and improved with 50 percent fewer calories
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Britannia’s Prime Minister Theresa May will present a "new bold offer" to politicians with "an improved package of measures" in a final attempt to get the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement Bill through parliament.

After failing three times to get parliament’s approval for May’s Brexit deal, the government will now put the bill, legislation which will enact that deal, before parliament for a vote in early June.

"I will not be simply asking MPs (politicians) to think again. Instead I will ask them to look at a new and improved deal with a fresh pair of eyes - and to give it their support," May wrote in The Sunday Times newspaper.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have been on the rise as the United States has deployed a carrier group and B-52 bombers over what it termed Iranian "threats".

Shabbir Hussain Gigyani, lawyer for the appellant, said his client was arrested by security forces several years ago and had remained in their illegal custody before he was handed over to the then administration of Khyber region and was tried under the now repealed Frontier Crimes Regulation.

The lawyer said there were no specific allegations of terrorism against the appellant and that a joint investigation team had asked the administration to convict him without producing any evidence in that respect.

Orphaned bear cub finds refuge in Bosnian village
[DAWN] In a mountain village in Bosnia, the Becars are making friends with a new addition to their family ‐ an orphaned baby bear who fled nearby woods in search of food and shelter.

The two-month-old female cub first showed up near Gunjani last weekend but locals, fearing her mother might come looking for her, directed her away from the village.

The next morning she came back and the Becars decided to take care of her, naming her Aida.

"When we first saw her, she couldn’t walk properly and was probably starving. I gave her some milk and we brought her here," said Sija Becar.

Contented but still a little unsteady on her feet, Aida ran in circles around the family’s courtyard before allowing herself to be stroked by Sija and her son Zakir.

The villagers say Aida’s mother was probably killed by poachers, who often prey on Bosnia’s population of around 850 brown bears.

Bear hunting is forbidden in the autonomous Bosniak-Croat Federation where Aida was found, but permitted in the country’s other half, the Serb Republic.

Without her mother to protect her, Aida has no chance of surviving in the wild, and the Becars have reluctantly agreed for her to be transferred to Sarajevo Zoo, where she can receive the more expert care she needs to fully rebuild her strength.

"We’ve got used to the baby bear, so we’ll be sorry when she leaves," Sija said.

Muhamed Hodzic, the Federation’s chief forestry inspector, said Aida was the third cub to have been rescued in the area in recent years after poachers killed their mother.

China-Japan-Koreas
Taiwan on the precipice
By Shelley Rigger

[Foreign Policy Research Institute] Over the past 30 years there have been many moments when Taiwan-watchers worked themselves into a tizzy worrying about the potential for conflict in the Taiwan Strait. Until now, though, I have been confident that worst-case thinking was unjustified, and the chances of open conflict were low.

Until now, but no longer.

At this moment, as Taiwan’s political parties battle over their presidential nominations, I am more worried about the future of the Taiwan Strait than I have ever been. Ominous trends are building on all three sides of the triangle, and conflict could be the result. It is by no means inevitable, or even the most likely future. But for the first time in decades, I can see a plausible path to disaster in the Taiwan Strait.
I'm too uninformed to pass judgement on this take, but maybe someone here will have something to add.

Iraq farmers go in night watches as mysterious fires hit wheat farms
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Wheat plantations in Iraq provinces of Diyala and Salahuddin are hit with a wave of mysterious fires as the country recently predicted a rebound in production, prompting farmers to go on night watches, according to local media.

Alsumaria News reported that the farmers were organizing night watches after the recent fires had eaten large portions of their farmlands in the towns of Jalawla, Maqdadiah and Qurra Tabba. It quoted an unnamed local official saying that while the farmers decry an absence of security authorities role in the issue, security point fingers to Islamic State

bully boys, admitting, in the same time, their inability to cover so big parts of lands.

Jassem Jabbara, an member of parliament, was quoted by Alsumaria News demanding compensations for the farmers and providing security protection for the plantations.

Iraq predicted in March its local wheat production to double to 4 million tons as rainfall frequency improved at areas out of the cultivation plans. That came after Iraq, a major rain importer, suffered severe water shortages over the past year, which prompted authorities to ban the cultivation of rice and other water-consumptive grains.

Iraq’s wheat production stood at 2.71 million tons in 2018. The government said recently it had purchased 883.000 tons of wheat from local farmers in nine provinces.

The Morning Briefing: A.G. Barr is Getting 'Inadequate' Answers
[PJ] An interview with Attorney General Bill Barr will air on Fox News this morning.
"I’ve been trying to get answers to the questions and I've found that a lot of the answers have been inadequate and some of the explanations I've gotten don't hang together, in a sense I have more questions today than when I first started," Barr told Fox News' Bill Hemmer in an interview set to air Friday on "America's Newsroom."

"What doesn't hang together?" Hemmer asked.

"Some of the explanations of what occurred," Barr said.

"Why does that matter?" asked Hemmer.

"People have to find out what the government was doing during that period. If we're worried about foreign influence, for the very same reason we should be worried about whether government officials abuse their power and put their thumb on the scale," Barr responded.

Barr added, "I'm not saying that happened but it's something we have to look at."

Inadequate, you say?

Barr was interviewed by Hemmer in El Salvador, where he will address the migrant crisis.

Ilhan Omar Says Attacks On Her And Rashida Tlaib Are ‘Designed To Silence' Muslim Voices
[Huffpoo] Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said President Donald Trump and other right-wing politicians and pundits’ attacks on her and fellow Muslim congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) are meant to "silence" Muslims.

"I tell my sister Rashida Tlaib that her and I have the strength to endure any of the mischaracterization or efforts to distort and vilify and mischaracterize our message," Omar said Tuesday in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.
"mischaracterize"...like when her speech is taped and played verbatim. What a repellant hateful lying imbecile
She added that such attacks were "designed to silence, sideline and almost eliminate [the] voice of Muslims from the public discourse."

Omar and Tlaib, who made history in November as the nation’s first Muslim women elected to Congress, have come under repeated attacks from the president, right-leaning pundits and lawmakers since they took office earlier this year.

Omar in particular, who is black, first faced significant controversy for questioning the U.S. relationship with Israel, which some painted as anti-Semitic.

Last month, Trump tweeted out a misleading video splicing together comments Omar made with footage of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying: "WE WILL NEVER FORGET." Despite Omar saying she received more death threats after the tweet, Trump continued his assault, saying people should look at her "anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements."

Two masked suspects broke into a northern West Bank settlement Friday overnight, a resident of the town told The Times of Israel, before encountering an IDF patrol and fleeing.

An alarm went off in Migdalim at 1:30 a.m. Residents were told to remain in their homes with the doors locked, said the resident, who serves on a security squad.

Security camera footage retrieved by The Times of Israel shows two suspects inside the settlement of Migdalim after cutting through a perimeter fence.

The resident said he believed the two were Paleostinians planning to carry out an attack. The IDF confirmed the incident, saying the two suspects fled when soldiers shined a light on them before they fled. It did not comment on their motive.

On Friday Israeli settlers and Paleostinians clashed in the northern West Bank, with a rights group saying the Israelis damaged buildings and set fire to fields in a Paleostinian village. For their part, the locals from Yitzhar involved in the altercation said it began when residents from the village of Urif torched several of their fields.

Trump threatens to deport all illegal immigrants
[DAWN] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
urged all illegal immigrants colonists on Friday not to make themselves "too comfortable" as they would be leaving soon.

On Thursday, President Trump announced a sweeping immigration proposal that would alter the way legal immigrants colonists are allowed into the US. The plan includes a civics test, a measure that experts said would prevent most applicants from entering the country.

"All people that are illegally coming into the United States now will be removed from our country at a later date as we build up our removal forces and as the laws are changed," he tweeted on Friday. "Please do not make yourselves too comfortable, you will be leaving soon!"’

According to the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, there are more than 11 million unauthorised immigrants colonists in the United States.

Mostly from Latin American countries, but there are also a sizeable number of Asians, including those from India and Pakistain.

President Trump’s statements have irked human and immigrant rights activists who are condemning his administration for waging a war on immigrants colonists. "President Trump is only doubling down in his war on immigrants colonists," said an advocacy group called the Southern Poverty Law Centre, Eleanor Acer of Human Rights First, said: "For the last two years the administration has pushed policy after policy designed to gut the US refugee and asylum systems."

Syria says air defenses intercept Israeli missiles, in 2nd incident in 24 hours
[IsraelTimes] State TV says military shot down ’hostile targets coming from direction of occupied territories,’ a day after kabooms heard in vicinity of Iranian and Hezbollah facilities.

Syria claimed its air defenses on Saturday night shot down a number of missiles fired from Israel, for the second time in less than 24 hours.

The official SANA news agency said the military intercepted "hostile targets coming from direction of occupied territories." Syrian state TV said the missiles were shot down over Quneitra and near Damascus.

On Friday night, Syrian state TV reported sounds of kabooms near the capital, and aired footage of what it claimed were air defenses intercepting missiles fired from Israeli jets seen over Quneitra in the Syrian Golan Heights.

"Aerial defenses detected hostile targets coming from the direction of Quneitra and dealt with them," the official SANA news agency quoted a military source saying, referring to a Syrian town in the Golan Heights bordering Israel.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported several kabooms in the al-Kiswah area outside the city, in the vicinity of Iranian and Hezbollah storage facilities and air defense batteries. The group added that it was not immediately clear if the kabooms were caused by Israeli Arclight airstrikes or surface-to-surface missiles.

There was no response from the Israel Defense Forces, which rarely comments on reported strikes.

The Hebrew-language media reported Saturday night that Friday’s alleged strike was another episode in the confrontation between Israel and Iran in Syria. Israel accuses Iran of seeking to set up a military presence in Syria that could be used to threaten the Jewish state.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
According to pro-opposition reports, the strikes targeted the First Division HQ of the Syrian Army Forces near al-Kiswah, south of Damascus. The site, some 50 km. from the Israeli border, is near Iranian and Hezbollah storage sites and air defense batteries.

Other local reports said the strikes targeted Iranian arms depots.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Malaysian teen took own life after Instagram poll
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Malaysian teenager who posted an Instagram poll asking if she should live or die took her life after a majority of respondents said yes, sparking calls for an investigation.
"69 percent of your friends said you suck."
The unidentified 16-year-old from Kuching in Sarawak died after posting the poll Monday on the Facebook-owned picture sharing platform.
"Oh. I guess I should kill myself then."
Police have classified the case as “sudden death.”
"How sudden?"
"Well, pretty quick."

“Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L,” she wrote, according to a report on the news portal Astro Awani, with the letters “D” and “L” apparently referring to “die” or “live” respectively.
I'da gone with "dipshit" or "lunatic."
Sixty-nine percent of votes cast were in favor of her ending her life, with just 31 percent against, local media quoted police as saying.
Or dipshit. Probably most people would have guessed that.
Lawmaker Ramkarpal Singh called for a probe into the circumstances of her death.
"Did she fall or was she pushed? F/P?"
"Foolish or Pathetic?"
"Either or."

“I urge the authorities... to investigate the social media accounts of the victim and the circumstances that led to her death to prevent further abuse of social media in similar circumstances in the future,” he said.
Since this isn't the first time this kind of stoopidity has happened, that "prevention" thing isn't working too well. Now, if you rounded up everyone who voted "D" and hung them by the neck all in a twitching row, that might represent a measure of prevention. Even if they were just strung up by the 'nads or bazooms it might have a measure of utility.
“It is important that incidents such as this do not repeat themselves,” he added.

IRGC chief: US will collapse with one strike just like the World Trade Center
He’s utterly adorable.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that his country is in a full intelligence war with the United States and "enemies of the Islamic Theocratic Republic" which includes cyber and military operations.

"We are in a full intelligence war with the United States and the enemies of the Islamic Theocratic Republic. This war is a combination of psychological warfare, cyber operations, military operations, diplomacy, fear, and intimidation," Major General Hossein Salami, who was named head of the force last month, was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

Salami also said that the Americans are facing great risks now.

"America has lost its power, and even though they look powerful, they are frail," he said while adding: "In reality America’s story is the same as the story of the World Trade Center that collapsed suddenly with one strike.

His comments came just days after he said that the Revolutionary Guards were on the "cusp of a full-scale confrontation with the enemy."

Three Philippine soldiers injured in ambush
[Inquirer] Three Philippine soldiers were injured in an ambush in the boundary of Barangay Sabong and Campo Uno in Lamitan City in Basilan on Thursday morning. Military spokesman Gerry Besana said the three personnel were on board two motorcycles when an unidentified armed group ambushed them.

Police spokesman Rufino Inot said the three soldiers came from the market in Lamitan City and were on their way back to their headquarters when the unidentified assailants repeatedly fired at them. Sixteen empty shells were recovered from the crime scene.

Besana said this was the first violent incident to happen in Basilan since the peaceful conduct of the midterm elections in the province.

Trump 'deserves' Khashoggi treatment, Maher guest Fran Lebowitz says before backpedaling
[FOXNEWS] Liberal author Fran Lebowitz went to the extreme Friday night during an appearance on "Real Time with Bill Maher," suggesting that President Trump should not only be impeached but killed.

Lebowitz began by saying she felt "plagued" by Trump's presidency and "shocked" by what she claimed was criminal behavior by Attorney General William Barr over his handling of the Mueller report.

But when she was asked about impeachment, Lebowitz did not think that was enough punishment for the president, who has not been charged with any crimes.

"Certainly, he deserves to be impeached. I mean, impeachment is just the beginning of what he deserves. Not even scratching the surface of what he deserves," Lebowitz said. "Whenever I think about this and what he really deserves, I think, 'We should turn him over to the Saudis, you know, his buddies. The same Saudis who got rid of that news hound, you know. Maybe they can do the same for him.'"

Warren Calls for Federal Government Intervention to Keep Abortion Legal
[BREITBART] Sen. Elizabeth Gitchie Goomie Liz Warren
...Dem Senatrix from Massachussetts, who traces her noble lineage all the way back to Big Chief Spouting Bull. It has been alleged that she speaks with forked tongue but she denies that. She had a DNA test to prove her lineage and it turns out she's colorless..
(D-MA) is calling for Congress to create and pass legislation that would make access to abortion mandatory across the United States.

Like many of her Democrat colleagues running for the 2020 presidential nomination, Warren is reacting to Alabama banning abortion and several other states poised to follow suit, most recently Missouri.

"These bad boy Republican politicians know what the law is ‐ but they don’t care," Warren wrote in a commentary posted on the Medium website on Friday. "They want to turn back the clock, outlaw abortion, and deny women access to reproductive health care. And they are hoping the Supreme Court will back their radical play."

And she blames Trump for the nation’s increasingly pro-life stance, including that he "stole" a seat on the United States Supreme Court.

"I’ll be blunt: It just might work," Warren wrote. "President Trump has packed the courts with extreme, anti-choice judges. Senate Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat and rammed through the confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh last year in order to cement an anti-choice majority on the Supreme Court."

Iran warns US: ‘Our missiles can reach your ships’
Our missiles can reach their population centers.
[ALMASDARNEWS] A deputy head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said short-range Iranian missiles could reach U.S. warships in the Gulf, and the United States could not afford a new war, the semi-official news agency Fars reported on Friday.

The comments added to days of sabre-rattling between Tehran and Washington, which has tightened sanctions and built up its military presence in the region alleging threats from Iran to its troops and interests.

Iran has accused the United States of "psychological warfare" and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said this week Tehran would not negotiate another deal after Washington quit a 2015 pact over Iran’s nuclear program.

"Even our short-range missiles can easily reach (U.S.) warships in the Persian Gulf," Mohammad Saleh Jokar, the Guard’s deputy for parliamentary affairs, was quoted by Fars as saying.

"America cannot afford the costs of a new war, and the country is in a bad situation in terms of manpower and social conditions," he added.

Separately, a senior Iranian military official accused U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
of dishonesty, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported on Friday.

Trump has said publicly he wants to pursue a diplomatic route after withdrawing from the 2015 deal and moving to cut off all Iranian oil exports this month.

"The actions of American leaders in exerting pressure and launching sanctions ... while speaking of talks, is like holding a gun at someone and asking for friendship and negotiations," said Rasoul Sanai-Rad, a political deputy of the armed forces’ command, Mehr reported.

"The behavior of American leaders is a political game which consists of threats and pressure while showing a willingness to negotiate in order to present a peaceful image of themselves and fool public opinion," Sanai-Rad added.

Bahrain asks its citizens to leave Iran, Iraq "immediately", Exxon evacuates foreign staff
[Jpost] US-allied Bahrain warned its citizens on Saturday against travel to Iraq and Iran and asked those already there to return "immediately" for their safety, state news agency BNA said.

The Bahrain foreign ministry cited, "unstable regional circumstances, dangerous developments and potential threats," according to BNA.

The warning comes amid simmering tensions between the United States and Iran.

Washington on Wednesday pulled non-emergency staff members from its embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad out of apparent concern about perceived threats from neighboring Iran, to which Iraqi Shi'ite militias are allied. Earlier on Saturday Exxon evacuated its foreign staff from an Iraqi oilfield.

Exxon Mobil Evacuates Foreign Staff Out Of Iraqi Oilfield

[Jpost] Exxon Mobil has evacuated all its foreign staff members out of Iraq's West Qurna 1 oilfield and is flying them out to Dubai, three sources told Rooters on Saturday.

Production at the oilfield was not affected by the evacuation and work there is under way normally and being undertaken by Iraqi engineers, Iraqi oil officials said.

Staff were evacuated over several phases late on Friday and early on Saturday, either straight to Dubai or to the main camp housing foreign oil company employees in Basra province.

Those in the camp are en route to the airport now, the three sources - an employee at a security company contracted by Exxon, an Iraqi oil official, and a staff member of a foreign oil company - said.

Africa Subsaharan
Islamic State in West Africa Forming ‘Jihadist Proto-State’ in Nigeria
[BREITBART] Members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
offshoot, are employing their growing power and influence to establish a "jihadist proto-state" in northern Nigeria, a non-governmental organization (NGO) reported this week.

In 2016, Boko Haram split from ISWAP over leadership differences. Unlike Boko Haram, ISWAP has cultivated support among local civilians, allowing the terrorist group to turn the neglected communities into a source of economic aid.

On Thursday, the International Crisis Group (ICG), an NGO committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflicts, reported:

Three years after Boko Haram broke apart [in 2016], one faction, the Islamic State in West Africa Province, is forming a proto-state in northern Nigeria. The state should press its military offensive against the jihadists but also try undercutting their appeal by improving governance and public services.

The crisis in north-eastern Nigeria is about more than the military balance of power, as underscored by the support ISWAP has won by creating a proto-state providing a measure of governance and services. If the Lake Chad states hope to dislodge the group and prevent its expansion, they therefore will have to do more than challenge ISWAP in battle. To make inroads, authorities will need to demonstrate that they can fill gaps in governance and service provision in areas of weaker ISWAP influence.

The Islamic State’s (ISIS/ISIS) West African wing is reportedly growing stronger and expanding its influence across northern Nigeria, ICG noted, adding:

ISWAP poses a particular challenge to the Lake Chad states because it represents more than aggressive fighters, rumbling pickups with mounted guns or proclamations of the caliphate’s rebirth. It is filling a gap left by decades of poor governance and neglect in the region. It has cultivated stronger ties with local residents than Boko Haram ever could by helping recover lost cattle, settling disputes over grazing and fishing rights, fending off rustlers, providing care to expectant mothers in rural areas, and imposing swift if terrible justice upon criminals, sometimes including when they are ISWAP members.

ISWAP is often cruel and arbitrary, even with civilians whose support it ostensibly seeks to gain. But for now, in the eyes of many locals, what it has to offer is often better than what came before.

Despite the growing threat at the hands of ISWAP, Boko Haram appears to remain the most prolific and deadliest group, having killed 20,000 people in the past nine years ending in 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.

It revealed that the situation of the region as a result of the decade-old crisis led to increased frequency of disease outbreaks.

ISWAP is expanding across Africa’s Sahel region

Britain
With Six Days to go Brexit Party Hits 35 Per Cent While Tories Sink to Single Figures
[BREITBART] Nigel Farage’s Brexit party has hit a new polling high, reaching a predicted 35 per cent of the public vote just five weeks after the party was launched and six days before Britannia votes in the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Parliament elections.

While the figures reported by major pollster YouGov remain comparatively static to their last figures published last week, the newly minted Brexit Party has managed to rise one point from an already historic 34 to 35 per cent, while the Conservatives have dropped one.

Now languishing in single digits at nine per cent, the party which presently rules the country under Prime Minister Theresa May is set to have its worst result in a national poll at any time in its nearly two-century history.

Woodstock 50 festival announces new funding to get show back on
[Dhaka Tribune] The organizers of a three-day concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival said on Friday they have obtained new funding to enable the show to go on.
Can we stop having Woodstock revivals when Wavy Gravy's dead?
Woodstock 50 said in a statement that US financial services firm Oppenheimer & Co, a unit of Oppenheimer Holdings Inc, had signed on as an adviser to complete financing for the Aug. 16-18 festival at the Watkins Glen motor racing venue in New York state.
Who's raising money for Altamont 50?
The festival, with an 80-act lineup that includes rapper Jay-Z and pop singer Miley Cyrus, was thrown into chaos last month after the lead Japanese investors announced they had decided to “cancel the event.”
"Woodstock 50? We change minds! Only if you hold it in Nagasaki!"
Friday’s statement did not say how much money Oppenheimer had obtained.
How much for the flower concession?
“We are thrilled to be onboard for this incredible weekend of music and social engagement,” John Tonelli, head of Debt Capital Markets and Syndication at Oppenheimer & Co, said in the statement. “We believe in Woodstock as an important American cultural icon and look forward to its regeneration,” he added.
"As long as Wavy Gravy doesn't peg out on us!"
Woodstock 50 is backed by the co-producer of the original 1969 Woodstock festival, which was billed as “three days of peace and music” and is regarded as one of the pivotal moments in music history.
This one is "Three days of Peace and Hip Replacements."
But the anniversary event has been plagued with problems and delays in announcing selling dates for tickets, obtaining permits and arranging security and sanitation.
They didn't worry about that stuff the last time, did they? Especially sanitation.
A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled earlier this week that original investors Amplifi Live, a unit of Dentsu Inc, had no right to unilaterally cancel the festival last month. But the judge declined to order the return to the organizers of $17.8 million of Amplifi Live’s funds.
"So desu ne? We got no right to do dat, but we don't have to give the money back? Kewl!"

The counsel further stated that earlier the complainant had filed an application under Section 21 (protection to judges, counsel, public prosecutor, witnesses and persons concerned with court proceedings) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 and the court had issued directions several times to the inspector general of police for ensuring security to the complainant, his witnesses and the counsel.

's health has massively deteriorated over the last week due to unhealthy environment in the jail.

"Khaleda Zia is trapped between life and death. Keeping Khaleda in jail, depriving her of bail, is contrary to the constitution and human rights

, since her conviction in any of the case had not been finally disposed off by the Supreme Court," said the senior BNP leader.

Speaking at a presser, he also said: "Due to loneliness and lack of proper treatment, she is suffering from various ailments including heart disease."
"We checked. She doesn't have a heart"
BNP standing committee members arranged the presser at its Nayapaltan central office, demanding Khaleda Zia's release from jail, and her proper medical treatment.

She is at serious risk of sudden cardiac arrest, said Sircar, also a former Speaker of parliament.

"The government had assured it would make proper arrangement for Khaleda Zia’s treatment, but not enough initiatives were taken yet," he said.

Jamiruddin added: "It is a bad sign that they are not letting Khaleda Zia out for treatment, even in this worsening condition."

BNP Vice Chairman‐and one of Khaleda's personal physicians‐AZM Zahid Hossain, said: "Khaleda Zia is suffering from high blood sugar, measuring from 14 to 18 mmol/L, and always needs to be on insulin. She has a sore tongue, which is not healing due to the high blood sugar.

"Moreover, her left shoulder, and elbow joint have become insensitive," he added.

Zahid Hossain said: "According to her doctors, Khaleda Zia is a special care patient. It is important to ensure all the facilities needed for her personal care."

Nancy Pelosi: ‘We Have Never Not Said There Was a Crisis’ at U.S.-Mexico Border
[BREITBART] House Speaker Nancy San Fran Nan Pelosi
Congresswoman-for-Life from the San Francisco Bay Area, born into a family of professional politicians. On-again-off-again Speaker of the House, It's not her fault when they lose, but it is when they win. Noted for her heavily botoxed grimace and occasional senior... uhhh... momentss...
(D-CA) falsely claimed Wednesday that Democrats have "never" denied that there is a "crisis" on the U.S.-Mexico border ‐ a statement directly contradicted by the words of multiple party leaders just months ago.

"Well, let me just say this. We have never not said that there was a crisis ‐ there is a humanitarian crisis at the border, and some of it provoked by the actions taken by the administration," Pelosi stated during her weekly presser in the Capitol Visitor Center on Wednesday.

"What is happening at the border is tragic and we hope to address some of that in the disaster supplemental," the Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Democrat added. "And we understand our responsibility to secure our border."

Pelosi’s remarks bear a stark contrast to what the House Speaker and other Democrats have previously said about the situation at the border, referring to it as a "manufactured crisis" by President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
During a joint presser in January, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
Senator-for-life from New York, renowned for his love of standing in front of cameras. Schumer has been a professional politician since 1975, when disco was in flower. Senate minority leader as of 2017.
(D-NY) accused the president of using the "backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention."

Further, House Majority Leader the mealy-mouthed Steny StinkyHoyer
... Nancy San Fran Nan Pelosi's second banana, or plaintain, or mango, or whatever he is...
said of the situation at the Southern border after a visit to El Paso, Texas: "The first, most dramatic thing we found was there is no crisis."

Sudan army rulers say talks with protesters to resume Sunday
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Sudan’s army rulers announced talks will resume with protest leaders Sunday, four days after the generals suspended negotiations on implementing a civilian rule in the country.

"The Transitional Military Council announces the resumption of negotiations with the Alliance for Freedom and Change on Sunday at the presidential palace," the ruling army council said in a Saturday statement.

Representatives from the UN, African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
and European powers "called for an immediate resumption of talks" between the two sides, said Tibor Nagy, the US assistant secretary of state for Africa.

The army last month ousted longtime president Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
after months of mounting protests led by young people that were sparked by the high cost of bread.

Protesters have remained camped out, saying that they want a rapid transition to democracy rather than continued military rule.

The generals and protest leaders had been expected to come to an agreement on Wednesday on the thorniest issue ‐ the make-up of a new body to govern Sudan for three years.

But the head of the military council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, early Thursday announced a suspension of talks for 72 hours as he demanded that protesters dismantle roadblocks and open bridges and railway lines connecting the capital.

Aside from that some of are going to the zoo for the day. Others are opting for a museum and monument tour. Tomorrow's Friday so TGIF, beer and wine pub hopping.
Mueller: You guys are creative geniuses; sounds good, carry on. I think I can keep this gig going for at least a couple of years. Just remember, we have to come up with some bullshit report at the end of the gig. What's the theme again?
Team: To get Trump and put Hillary in office. We can still do it. We're also working on some motivational song Bob that we can sing at skull sessions. Maybe some games to go along with the singing with prizes.

Despite all of the recommendations from the DOJ IG and Rosenstein himself to fire Comey, the special prosecutor was really appointed to get Trump on obstruction for firing Comey.

There was never a doubt about the collusion issue. That’s why they went on snipe hunts for Manafort and Stone. It is also why the volume 2 was longer than volume one and written to sow confusion and give the Democrats a door to keep the witch hunt alive.

This does not include all Palestinians, many of whom prefer cooperation with Israel, though many of these do not dare to say so publicly for fear of the terrorists who MS. Ashrawi supports.

White House proposal to tap Pell Grant fund casts a pall over NASA's moon plans
[Yahoo] Will NASA’s plan to land astronauts on the moon by 2024 fly with Congress? The Artemis program’s implications are still sinking in on Capitol Hill, but there’s already a political problem having to do with where the money’s supposed to come from.

Trump administration officials confirmed that the $1.6 billion being sought as a “down payment” for accelerating the push to the moon would be taken from a roughly $8 billion reserve account for the popular Pell Grant program, which funds education for millions of low-income students annually.

Due to the economy’s rebound from the 2008-2009 Great Recession, the number of Pell Grant recipients has been declining in recent years, leading to a buildup in reserves. Because of that, taking money from the reserves would not affect current recipients, who will be receiving up to $6,195 for the 2019-2020 academic year.
