#2  Today is a difficult and quiet time for most. The families and the fallen are over us in every thought. Today we grill and drink beer. We celebrate those that are near, as those that have fallen would have wanted. Some say there is more to this holiday than grills and beer, maybe so, but it all starts there, with friend and family.

#3  Memorial Day grew out of the Civil War. Though non-partisan it still took generations to gain acceptance nationwide, and then only because it was expanded to honor WWII (and later - WWI was initially covered by Veterans/Armistice Day) losses. Now it is at least as much a start of summer holiday for most as an honoring of those who gave their lives for our country. (Please, no ‘Happy Memorial Day ‘)

Packers legend Bart Starr dies at 85
[NBC Sports] Bart Starr, the MVP of the first two Super Bowls and a cornerstone of the Packers’ dynasty of the 1960s, has died. He was 85.

The Packers announced the death of the legendary quarterback on Sunday morning.

"We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr," Starr’s family said in a statement released by the Packers. "He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome.

#1  Nice guy and an athlete role model kids could actually look up to.

Had lunch with his wife Cherry and him at a function in the mid 2000's. They were involved with an outreach program we shared in common, Rawhide Boy's Ranch. Very friendly, gracious and with a good sense of humor.

He will be greatly missed.

#6  I used to loathe Bart Starr as a Cowboys fan, but I have to say that after reading about him in several books, including the great Jerry Kramer book about St. Vince the Lombardi, I came to realize what a great human being he was. Truly, he was all the best of what humanity has to offer in a person.

God's blessings on Bart, and may Jesus give you a special seat in Heaven.

3 Times Media Falsely Claimed Russiagate Transparency Would End The Republic
[The Federalist] On Thursday, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum directing the intelligence agency heads to comply and cooperate with "a review of intelligence activities relating to the campaigns in the 2016 Presidential election." The memorandum also gave Attorney General William Barr the authority to declassify information pertaining to the investigation.

For several years, government officials from the Obama administration had alleged in anonymous leaks to friendly reporters that Trump was a traitor who had colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election from Hillary Clinton. After nearly a year of investigation at the FBI, which included the use of wiretaps, national security letters, and overseas intelligence assets deployed against the campaign, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein launched a special counsel to further investigate the claim.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller ended his nearly two-year probe with a determination that neither Trump nor his campaign ‐ and indeed no Americans at all ‐ had colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election. That probe, whose overwhelmingly Democrat participants bristled at the charge they were engaged in a "witch hunt," did attempt to show that Trump’s complaints against the false smear were tantamount to "obstruction of justice," but was unable to do so.

Media who are implicated in perpetuating the false allegation that Trump was a traitor reacted poorly to the news that Barr was given authority to bring some transparency to the Russia collusion narrative that had been effective precisely because it was shrouded in secrecy.

As bizarre as it is for journalists to fight transparency ‐ MSNBC’s Trump-bruised Joe Scarborough said declassifying documents is what an "autocrat" does ‐ it matches the talking points of those inside the agencies who worry about their activities being exposed. With the implosion of the Russia collusion theory, neither the sources nor their compliant journalist buddies who promised "bombshell" after "bombshell" are covered in glory.

NPR: Decline In Disability Rolls Might Mean This Jobs Boom Is For Real
[Hot Air] Call it the last of the red-hot overhangs. Earlier this week, NPR’s Scott Horsley took note of a curious and counter-intuitive trend in disability claims. For the first time in decades ‐ and a few years after a sharp spike ‐ the number of Americans declaring themselves unable to work have started falling. It’s the last piece of a recovery puzzle that stumped a lot of people who should have known better:
During and after the Great Recession, people turned to disability rolls in large numbers to make ends meet. This accelerated what had been going on for a generation, as the federal government’s disability insurance program saw steady growth.

But now, for the first time in decades, the disability rolls are shrinking. More people with disabilities are returning to work and holding on to their jobs. With unemployment at a nearly 50-year low, companies are struggling to find workers. And that means people who had trouble finding a job in the past are suddenly in demand. That includes people with disabilities. ...

It’s still unusual for people to leave the disability program and return to work. Less than 1% of recipients do so each year. But the numbers have been growing as the job market has improved. In 2017 more than 51,000 people traded disability checks for paychecks, up from about 32,000 four years earlier.
It’s not like the inflation of disability rolls were a mystery, and yet nearly everyone seemed to forget about them. It began in earnest as the extended unemployment insurance payments began to run out in 2011-12. After a few years of the recovery, economists claimed that the US economy had reached "full employment" based on the U-3 unemployment rate. Yet wages remained flat and personal economies showed little sign of improvement. The same economists began claiming that the normal labor-market wage mechanisms of supply and demand had stopped working and that government intervention on compensation would be required to resolve the problem.

Graham says intel officials concerned about exposure of 2016 misbehavior
[Washington Examiner] Amid investigations into potential misbehavior by intelligence officials during the 2016 presidential campaign, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday, "It doesn't surprise me that the people we are looking at, they don't want transparency."

The South Carolina Republican told "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace he agreed with President Trump's decision to give Attorney General William Barr "full and complete authority" to work with the intelligence community in declassifying documents related to the origins of the Russia investigation and the conduct of the Justice Department and the FBI.

Barr's move has drawn strong criticism from former FBI Director James Comey, ex-CIA Director John Brennan, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Each has said the declassification process could lead agencies vulnerable to revelations about intelligence sources and methods.

But Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said it's the ex-intelligence and Justice Department officials who should be on the defensive about their conduct in the 2016 campaign and early into Trump's tenure.

"The people who are worried about this are worried about being exposed for taking the law in their own hands," said Graham, 63, without identifying specific officials.

Wallace pressed him on this, calling these government secrets "the crown jewels of the intelligence community" and saying that critics had raised questions about whether Barr can "be trusted with these secrets" and whether Barr can "be trusted not to cherry-pick the information to make a case for the president."

Robert Mueller -- dishonest, deceptive and diabolical
[American Thinker] Democratic expectations of victory over Trump were dashed when Mueller absolved the President of any untoward arrangement with Russian tools of Putin. Within an hour, Mueller went from being heralded as the "most trusted man in America" to a traitor. His words had been twisted by AG Barr, they said. Mueller would come to Congress and tell them the real truth. But Mueller does not want to be grilled by crazed Democrats; one can imagine their vicious anger that would be directed his way. By noon that day, these former Mueller devotees turned their wrath upon Barr. Suddenly he was "the President's lawyer," not the AG. In short, since the day the report was released, the left's meltdown that began on election night 2016 got infinitely worse. For nearly three years they had studiously ignored the mountains of evidence that the entire fiasco was a seditious attempt at a coup, a scheme to frame and overthrow a duly-elected President. Those involved believed their plan would work. Those who were duped by the rumors and innuendo because they so hated the fact that this drain-the-swamp outsider had come to power in their backyard were left stunned.

Former Top MI6 Spy Reveals Huawei 99% Owned by China Communist Union
[American Thinker] Sir Richard Dearlove, former Head of British Secret Intelligence Service MI6 warns that 99 percent of Huawei is directly owned by the Chinese Communist Party.

In ’Defending Our Data: Huawei, 5G and the Five Eyes,’ Dearlove reports that by undercutting the prices of once dominant European telecom network equipment by 18-30 percent, Huawei’s sales rose from $4.6 billion in in 2014 to $105 billion in 2018.

Although customers give high marks to Huawei for quality and reliability, the key to achieving its 41 percent global telecom network infrastructure share has been Chinese state-owned banks lending $10 billion directly to Huawei or indirectly to its customers.

With a purported a $100 billion Chinese bank credit line, Huawei was positioned to gain an even more dominant market share with the roll-out of fifth generation cellular network technology (5G), before President Trump placed Huawei Technologies, Inc. on the U.S. Commerce Department's "Entity List," that bans American companies from selling components to Huawei without a U.S. government license.

President Trump’s actions may have reduced Huawei’s potential sales by up to 60 percent, due to follow-on bans by U.S. allies in Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada and others. But given that Huawei runs on Google Android software and gets its chips from Intel and Qualcomm, the U.S. ban may be the equivalent of a technological death sentence.

#7  Abu Uluque: I build my own PC's (and will help if you want, I have some spare parts). I try to restrict my purchases to Korean (Samsung) and Taiwanese (Coolermaster, Gigabyte, Asrock) manufactured components. There is a USA made power supply, but likely has hybrid origins. That covers everything except CPU's; you never know there, but AMD's Ryzen's are supposed to be made in Taiwan. Nvidia is a USA company that uses TSMC, a Taiwanese company, for their fabs to make their GPU's. So buy an Nvidia card from Gigabyte and avoid the PRC. Mostly. Many components and chips will be made in the PRC. This wasn't true before, but it is now.

You can get a computer from Supermicro and spec it for no PRC parts, but I can't swear to full compliance, and it will be crazy pricey as you are specifying something that will be audited to the component level throughout the build. My only Mac is a Mac Pro that was supposed to be made in the USA. I know all the parts are not.

Liz Cheney: Statements by Peter Strzok, Lisa Page ‘Could Well Be Treason'
[Breitbart] Sunday on ABC’s "This Week," Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) said negative statements by former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page while investigating President Donald Trump sounded "a whole lot like a coup" and added that it could even be "treason."

Cheney said, "What is crucially important to remember here is that you had Stzrok and Page who were in charge of launching this investigation and they were saying things like we must stop this president. We need an insurance policy against this president. That in my view when you have people that are in the highest echelons of the law enforcement of this nation saying things like that, that sounds an awful lot like a coup, and it could well be treason. And I think that we need to know more. What was Jim Comey’s role in all this? These people reported to him. Andy McCabe reported to him. What was Comey’s role in that, and that is what the attorney general is going to be focused on."

She added, "Think about the fact that we had people that are at the highest levels of our law enforcement in this nation saying that they were going to stop a dually elected president of the United States, saying they need an insurance policy against him. Under CIA Chief Gina Haspel, an Intelligence Service Returns to the Shadows
Isn't that where it was supposed to be?
[WSJ] At a gala dinner in February to raise funds for the families of Central Intelligence Agency officers killed in the line of duty, CIA Director Gina Haspel surprised her audience by delving into details of spycraft the agency has used to run agents on the streets of Moscow. But the crowd’s astonishment at the unusual revelation quickly evaporated when the spy chief confided that the material came from a journalist’s book.

After a year atop the CIA, Ms. Haspel is giving away few secrets. With a 35-year career in clandestine operations and a U.S. president who pounces when his spy chiefs contradict him publicly, she and her agency have adopted their lowest public profile in decades.

“She’s gone to ground,” said Mark Lowenthal, a former CIA official and staff director of the House Intelligence Committee. “It’s not going to be any good for her to be out there attracting lightning bolts.”

Interviews with nearly 20 current and former U.S. intelligence officials reveal a portrait of a CIA director who has been warmly received by the workforce she has spent her life among.

The CIA’s first female director since its 1947 founding, she has put in place her own leadership team—which also includes many women—and so far has avoided having President Trump’s political allies embedded in the agency’s senior ranks.

But if Ms. Haspel’s primary mission is overseeing a global spy agency charged with addressing threats ranging from terrorism to climate change, it sometimes seems her second priority is protecting the agency she has devoted her life to from the domestic threat of a toxic U.S. political culture.

“I think that she’s adopting a strategy much like [FBI Director] Chris Wray of keeping a lower profile, avoiding situations where she’s put in the position of publicly contradicting the president,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D., Calif.), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which oversees the CIA.

Bomb attack kills five Iraqi civilians in Nineveh
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) ‐ At least 13 Iraqi non-combatants were killed and maimed Sunday in a bomb kaboom in Nineveh province, Iraqi police said.

Rudaw adds:
Five people were killed and eight injured Sunday in a bomb attack in the Rabia district of Nineveh Province, near the Syrian border, according to security officials.

A truck packed with explosives detonated near the village bazaar in Aweinat, Iraq’s Security Media Cell announced Sunday.

Although nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast, Iraq’s official security outlet said it was a “terrorist attack”.

It follows a string of recent attacks across northern Iraq claimed by the Islamic State group (ISIS), which has returned to its earlier insurgency tactics of bombings, ambushes, and kidnappings.

US sanctions on Iran felt in Iraqi Shiite tourist districts

But lately, when Iranian pilgrims ask about prices, he tells them he can only sell if they pay in Iraqi currency. They often walk out, disappointed.

21 shot, 3 fatally so far in Chicago during Memorial Day weekend
[MSN] As Memorial Day weekend wore on, by Sunday morning Chicago police had responded to the shootings of 21 people, three of whom died from their injuries, officials said.

The grim tally was only expected to increase as a shooting Sunday about 6 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Throop Street in Englewood is said to have left two dead and two injured. The shooting was possibly in retaliation for an earlier one in the same neighborhood on West Hastings Street, which also left a man dead, investigators said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signs bill outlawing child sex dolls
[ORLANDOWEEKLY] On Thursday Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law legislation that bans the sale or possession of child-like sex dolls after it unanimously passed the Florida Legislature.
Dumb idea. Rather have them porking robots or rubber dollies than real little girls. They're just dolls.
SB 160, sponsored by state Sen. Lauren Book, D-Plantation, "prohibits a person from knowingly having in his or her possession, custody, or control an obscene, child-like sex doll." State Rep. Michael Gottlieb, D-Plantation, filed a companion measure in the Florida House.

"These are anatomically correct, lifelike silicone dolls that are eerily similar to real human children made for the sole purpose of sexual gratification," Book said in a statement from her office following the bill's approval. "Just as viewing child pornography lowers the inhibitions of child predators, so do these childlike sex dolls that have no place in the state of Florida."

A legislative analysis found that many child-like sex dolls are imported from China, Japan and Hong Kong, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reports.

While supporters of the bill say owning the dolls should be treated like possession of child pornography, others claim the dolls could prevent pedophiles from acting on their impulses with real children.

Violation of the law is a third-degree felony. Subsequent violations are being deemed second-degree felonies.

The law goes into effect Oct. 1.

Trump’s Targeting of Intelligence Agencies Gains a Harder Edge
[MSN] President Trump tried somewhat clumsily last year to revoke the security clearance of the former C.I.A. director who played a role in opening the Russia investigation. He then wanted to release classified documents to prove he was the target of a "witch hunt."

Both attempts petered out, hampered by aides who slow-rolled the president and by Justice Department officials who fought Mr. Trump, warning he was jeopardizing national security.

But this week, Attorney General William P. Barr engineered a new approach. At Mr. Barr’s urging, Mr. Trump granted him new authorities to examine the start of the Russia investigation, demonstrating a new level of sophistication for an old line of attack. Unlike Mr. Trump’s hollow threats and name-calling, Mr. Barr’s examination of how the intelligence community investigated the Trump campaign could offer a more effective blueprint for the president to take aim at his perceived political enemies.

10 people shot at block party in Chesapeake, one man confirmed dead
[PILOTONLINE] The Memorial Day weekend party, he said, started in the late afternoon with several people setting up while others cooked and played music. As the sun was setting, two people rapped on top of a U-Haul truck as dozens gathered in the street and front yards, according to a video of the party posted to Facebook.

"This is our Something in the Water," one man said in the video, referring to a Virginia Beach festival last month that drew stars like Jay-Z, Pharrell and Missy Elliott.

Later that evening, the block party began to turn violent.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Chesapeake Police responded to the intersection of Holly Cove Drive and Airline Boulevard for noise complaints and traffic congestion as people refused to move for vehicles, Kosinski said.

Officers cleared the scene and left.

About an hour later, they got another call for the same complaints. Kosinski said police devised a new plan to ensure the problems didn't continue and then started driving back to the neighborhood.

While they were on the way, gunshots erupted.

"We were there fairly quickly," Kosinski said. "But it was very chaotic."

At the scene, officers found multiple people with gunshot wounds, he said, adding that all of the injuries occurred either on the street or in people's yards.

A man live-streamed the immediate aftermath of the shooting in a Periscope video. When shots rang out, he said he was waiting for food and had to duck to avoid being hit. Several kids were next to him, he said.

"All I heard was shots fired and people running toward me," he said in the video, repeating the "pop-pop-pop" of gunshots. "I just kept hearing gunshots."

About 20 minutes after the shooting, he said he was stuck in his car on the street while police were on the scene. Officers closed the neighborhood's entrance off Airline Boulevard while they worked to restore peace, preserve the scene of the crime and collect evidence.

For the rest of the long weekend, Kosinski said, there will be an increased police presence in the Holly Cove neighborhood.

Few details about what sparked the altercation were available, and Kosinski said he's not sure if it qualifies as a mass shooting because it will depend on intent.

"The police are doing a thorough investigation so that they can do everything in their power to prevent something like this from happening again," the mayor said.

3 people killed, 5 soldiers injured in exchange of fire at check post in North Waziristan
[DAWN] Following reports of violence during a protest in North Wazoo on Sunday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement in the afternoon saying that a check post in the area was assaulted by a group and in an exchange of fire, three people were killed while 15 were maimed ─ including five soldiers.

According to the statement by the Army's media wing, MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir ─ both of whom are leaders of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) ─ were leading the group.

"A group led by Mohsin Javed [Dawar] and Ali Wazir assaulted Kharqamar check post, Boyya, North Waziristan tribal district this morning. They wanted to exert pressure for release of suspected terrorists’ controller tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
the other day," added the statement, without specifying who the suspect was.

"Troops at the check post exercised maximum restraint in the face of provocation and direct firing on the post. Due to firing of the group, five Army soldiers got injured. In exchange of fire, three individuals who attacked the post bit the dust and 10 got injured," it said.

All injured have been shifted to Army Hospital for treatment, said the ISPR statement, adding that Ali Wazir along with 8 individuals have been arrested while Mohsin Javed [Dawar] is on the lam.
An Nahar provides background:
The Pashtun Protection Movement (PTM) has rattled the military since it burst onto the scene earlier last year with a call to end alleged abuses by security forces targeting ethnic Pashtuns in the restive tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir, both members of parliament, led a group that attacked a checkpost in Boyya in North Wazoo tribal district to "exert pressure for release of a controller of suspected terrorists," the military said in a statement.

North Waziristan, once plagued by militancy and unrest, is where Washington believes that Pakistain is providing safe haven to hard boy groups including the Afghan Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
and the Haqqani Network.

The army has carried out multiple operations in the region, and security there and across Pakistain has dramatically improved in recent years.

But the military maintains a heavy presence there still, and the PTM has unleashed festering anger over the alleged abuses against Pashtuns across the country, including enforced disappearances and assassinations.

The movement remains peaceful, but has been notable for its direct verbal attacks on the armed forces in a country where such criticism is largely seen as a red line.

Despite these facts, Germany recently deported 26 more people to Afghanistan. Since December 2016, almost 600 people have been sent to the country in a total of 24 repatriation flights. Authorities have even used physical force to deport people.

The holy mans, who called on the chief minister at his office, announced their complete cooperation for the anti-polio campaign and resolved to work effectively to eliminate polio.

The chief minister said the presence of polio in Pakistain was a matter of concern and that the whole world had become polio-free, but the disease still existed in Pakistain and Afghanistan.

Stressing the role of holy mans in the anti-polio campaign, he said they had always played an effective role in the protection of social and moral values. Now, he said, children needed the holy mans to make the anti-polio campaign successful and eliminate the fatal disease. A detailed meeting with the holy mans will be held after Eidul Fitr, the chief minister added.

Four dead, seven injured in three explosions in Nepal's capital
[DAWN] Four men died and seven were maimed on Sunday in three separate kabooms in Kathmandu, Nepali police said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but police said they suspect the involvement of a Maoist splinter group whose pamphlets were found in a house where one of the kabooms took place.

A powerful blast inside a shop killed three people and injured four, while the kaboom at a home about four kilometres away left one dead and another injured.

Two more were maimed when an explosive they were carrying on a cycle of violence on the outskirts of Kathmandu went kaboom!.

Security personnel also defused explosives in other areas.

"We are investigating all incidents and have stepped up the security," police front man Bishwa Raj Pokharel told AFP.

Pokharel said that seven people have been tossed in the slammer
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
so far.

The incidents come on the eve of a nationwide strike called by the same Maoist splinter group, protesting death of their cadre in a police encounter over a week ago.

French yellow vest protesters clash with police Saturday but numbers wane
No doubt they were instead busily voting for right-of-Macron or Green delegates to the European parliament, depending on inclination.
[AlAhram] Yellow vest protesters clashed with riot police in Gay Paree and the northern city of Amiens on Saturday as the French anti-government movement waned on its 28th straight weekend.

Police in Amiens, hometown of President Emmanuel Macron, fired teargas at about 1,200 demonstrators after a group pelted stones at police, attacked local bank branches and set fire to rubbish cans, the local police chief’s office said.

Police detained 27 people in the city.

A few hundred protesters also clashed with police in downtown Gay Paree, in and around the Place de la Republique.

Contest to replace May as British PM hots up, BoJo favorite
[DAWN] The contest to replace Theresa May as British prime minister hotted up on Saturday with five candidates now vying for a job whose central task will be to find a way to take a divided Britannia out of the European Union

British health minister Matt Hancock became the latest figure to join the contest to replace May, following former foreign minister Boris Johnson, current foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, International Development Secretary Rory Stewart and former work and pensions minister Esther McVey.

About a dozen contenders in total are thought to be considering a tilt at the leadership, with trade minister Liam Fox and former junior Brexit minister Steve Baker not ruling out a challenge when asked on Saturday.

Prior to this attack, a group of reconciled rebels attacked the nearby military intelligence base and took the officers hostage.

The reconciled rebels demanded the Syrian military intelligence release the former Free Syrian Army commander Haytham al-Hariri from their prisons.

Syrian Army moves towards Idlib province after capturing Kafr Naboudeh
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recaptured the key town of Kafr Naboudeh this week after withdrawing from it as a result of the jihadist counter-offensive.
HTS/al-Nusra lost 120 men kicking the Syrian army out yesterday or the day before.
According to a military source, the Russian Air Force played an imperative role in the Syrian Army’s success on Sunday, as their fighter jets completely wiped out Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
’s fortifications inside Kafr Naboudeh.

With Kafr Naboudeh under their control, the Syrian Army will now make a push towards the Idlib province. In doing so, the Syrian Army will have to capture the large hilltop of Tal Sakher, which overlooks Kafr Naboudeh from its eastern flank.

If they are able to capture Tal Sakher, the Syrian Army can finally push to capture the town of al-Hobeit. The aforementioned town has long been under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and its proximity to the strategic city of Khan Sheikhoun makes its capture all the more important.

Since Saturday evening, the Syrian and Russian air forces have been peppering Khan Sheikhoun with Arclight airstrikes every few hours. These airstrikes have reportedly caused significant damage to HTS’ defenses in this part of the Idlib province.

In regards to Khan Sheikhoun, its location along the Idlib-Hama Highway makes its capture a high priority for the Syrian Army’s high command.

Alligator attack leaves Florida woman with 'significant' bite injuries
[USATODAY]Paramedics responded to Fay Lake Wilderness Park in Port St. John Saturday after a woman was bitten by an alligator.

Brevard County Fire Rescue said the woman had "significant" bite injuries and was transported by helicopter to a local hospital.

No information was immediately available on the age of the victim or the circumstances leading up to the bite.

Gator trapper Frank Robb responded to the scene after a call from Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. He was able to locate the gator in the area where the bite took place.

Robb was able to lure out the gator by mimicking its calls. Witnesses at the scene verified that it was the same animal that bit the woman.

Gators that attack humans or pets are always killed as a precaution against future attacks, according to FWC policy.

"He was probably an 8-footer missing 2 feet of his tail from an old fight, and most all of his teeth was missing," Robb said. Based on the gator's behavior and lack of fear, Robb said it had probably been fed in the past.

Gunmen raid Burkina Faso church, kill four

Other worshippers were maimed in the assault on the morning service at the church near the town of Titao, the source added.

No one has grabbed credit for the attacks which threaten to upend traditionally peaceful relations between the Moslem majority and Christians who make up a quarter of Burkinabes.

The government has blamed unnamed terrorist groups operating in the country and Africa's surrounding Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...

Islamist Death Eaters based in Mali have regrouped after a French intervention in 2013 and now use the country’s north and centre as launchpads for attacks on neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Gunmen killed a Protestant pastor and five congregants in another church in northern Burkina in late April. A Catholic priest and five parishioners were killed in an attack in the central town of Dablo on May 12 and another four Catholics died in an attack two days later in the northern town of Ouahigouya.

Amid feud with Trump, Washington Post offers timely piece declaring Nancy Pelosi a ‘fashion icon’
[BIZPACREVIEW] With Speaker Nancy Pelosi locking horns with President Donald Trump in a battle that is getting increasingly personal, the Washington Post is out with a timely piece calling the 79-year-old California Democrat a “fashion icon.”

Describing Pelosi as “a recipe for stylish feminine authority with a healthy dose of attitude,” fashion journalist Christina Binkley doesn’t even try to hide her adulation for the Democrat leader.

In the article, Binkley props up Pelosi as a master effortlessly manipulating Trump back in December under the guise of writing about the red wool coat she had on.

“Pelosi also stayed largely mum when her clothes drew attention in December,” she wrote. “As she strode out of the White House looking victorious in a brick-red wool coat and sunglasses, having baited President Trump into taking responsibility for the coming government shutdown, she tipped her sunglasses. Her swagger went viral. So did the coat.”

Theresa May: A Political Obituary
[NATIONALREVIEW] Theresa May said today that it was a matter of "deep regret" that she hasn’t delivered Brexit. But three years ago, it seems, a half-competent leader could have enacted a persuasive and moderate Brexit with a comfortable majority. A half-competent leader, making the kinds of mistakes Theresa May has made, would also have known when to quit. She has been entirely uncompromising on that front ‐ resigning only when forced to.

Which is why I don’t feel in the least bit sorry for the trembling ninny. As far as political obituaries go, Mrs. May is survived by the disintegrated remains of the Tories and populist drain (the Brexit party). How’s that for a legacy?

Now that we are seeing a conservative (relatively speaking of course) in European politics, Brexit is potentially being left in the dust as several new governments are looking at the sinister impenetrable monolith that is EU governance.

On autopilot: 'Pilots are losing their basic flying skills,' some fear after Boeing 737 Max crashes
[USATODAY] Automation has made planes safer and more efficient, but the crashes of two Boeing 737 Max jets is leading some to wonder if there is a dangerous flip side.

While advanced autopilots and computers are now considered an integral part of any modern jetliner, many pilots worry that the systems are detracting from developing and maintaining their own abilities.

"We’ve been talking about this in the industry for years. Pilots are losing their basic flying skills and there’s an overreliance on automation," said Les Westbrooks, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, after the latest 737 Max crash, an Æthiopian Airlines flight in March.

That crash followed the crash of a Lion Air flight into the Java Sea five months earlier. The two accidents together killed a total of 346 passengers and crew. Boeing is redesigning a key computerized system in the plane, but questions are being raised about pilot actions as well.

#5  The only reason for a pilot in a jet liner is for take offs and landings, and manage the emergency, if it happens. As what they call me, an analogue pilot, we fly the aircraft. Todays pilots fly the systems, and are there for emergencies. If we have learned anything from the latest crashes, their emergency training is wanting.

#6  The AF 447 disaster was started with the pitot tube icing, then the plane stalled. The two pilots lost 'situational awareness' and rode the plane down 35,000 fett, in a stall, despite 75 stall alarms recorded on the voice cockpit recorder. The senior pilot came in from a nap, seconds before the crash, immediately identified the problem, said, 'push the nose down!', but it was too late. Mush of the story was reported on the automated maintenance reporting system, via satellite.

Le Pen beats Macron in France as nationalists gain in EU vote
[REUTERS] Marine Le Pen’s far-right party edged just ahead of the centrist alliance of President Emmanuel Macron in exit polls as French voters led what pollsters expected to be a nationalist surge in an EU parliament election on Sunday.

The defeat was narrow - just one seat - but a bitter one for those who hope the French leader can inspire Europeans to embrace the Union as an answer rather than part of the problem in the face of what for many is nerve-wracking social change.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
a first official projection of all 751 seats by the European Parliament indicated that losses for the pro-EU center may have been no worse than expected, with the Greens and liberals also gaining at the expense of the center-right and center-left.

Arab Report: Ex-IDF Officer Admits 2015 Assassination Of Terrorist Kuntar
Or not, as the case may be. But the gentleman in question is most unquestionably dead, which is what matters.
[Jpost] Was Israel responsible for the liquidation of Samir Kuntar, a Lebanese terrorist who belonged to the Paleostine Liberation Front?
The PLF was a precursor to the secular Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
The London-based Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat claimed Sunday that a former Israeli army officer, Marco Morno, confirmed that Israel assassinated Kuntar in 2015 with "two planes that bombed a building with four long-range missiles after receiving information from ’one of the leaders of the Syrian opposition faction.’"

Kuntar murdered three Israelis in 1979, a 28-year-old man, his 4-year-old daughter, and an Israeli policeman. The man’s 2-year-old daughter suffocated as her mother tried to quiet her crying.

The terrorist spent nearly 30 years in Israeli prisons and was released in exchange for the bodies of two IDF soldiers killed by Hezbollah in 2008. On his release, he returned to Leb and joined Hezbollah, becoming a prominent member.
Did he get religion in Israel’s prisons, or did he, like so many, join the jihad in whichever organization would provide him the greatest latitude to exercise his skillz?
At the time of Kuntar’s death, Israel did not claim responsibility, though according to Asharq al-Awsat , the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has previously said that Kuntar was the target of various failed Israeli liquidation attempts in Syria.

Morno reportedly told an Israeli news site about the liquidation, which he said he could share under military censorship.

The IDF has not responded to the report and it remains unclear if the operation was in fact carried out by Israel or the Syrian opposition.

Sri Lanka Detains Nearly 100 in Anti-Islamist Swoops
[AnNahar] Sri Lanka's military has detained nearly 100 suspects during four days of search operations against remnants of an Islamist group blamed for the Easter attacks that killed 258, officials said Sunday.

Some 3,000 military personnel were deployed in and around the capital as well as other key towns for cordon-and-search activities that began on Thursday, a military official said.

In the first three days, security forces took 87 suspects into custody and they were handed over to police for further investigations, he added.

"The number of people detained could be around 100 by now," a security official said adding that almost all were taken in for possessing drugs and in some cases illegal weapons.
“Never allow a good crisis to go to waste,” as Rahm Emanuel, recently retired mayor of Chicago, once said.
A few were also detained along with video and other propaganda material of the local jihadi group, the National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ) which has been blamed for the April 21 bombings.

Several parts of the capital were also targeted in search operations by troops on Sunday.

Similar raids were carried out in North Western Province, north of Colombo, where anti-Moslem riots this month left one man dead and left hundreds of Moslem-owned shops, homes and mosques destroyed.

[FoxNews] Liz Cheney: Strzok-Page texts sound ’like a coup,’ could be ’treason’

Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo, said in an interview that aired Sunday that text messages between former FBI investigators Peter Strzok and Lisa Page "sound an awful lot like a coup" and could even be treason.

"I think what is really crucially important to remember here is that you had Strzok and Page who were in charge of launching this investigation and they were saying things like, 'We must stop this president, we need an insurance policy against this president,'" she said on ABC News' "This Week."

"In my view when you have people that are in the highest echelons of the law enforcement of this nation saying things like that, that sounds an awful lot like a coup -- and it could well be treason and I think we need to know more," she said.

Cheney was referring to the anti-Trump texts uncovered last year by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Both Strzok and Page were involved in the FBI’s initial counterintelligence investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates during the 2016 election, and later served on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team.

In an August 2016 text message exchange, they talked about Trump’s chance of being elected president.

"[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!" Page texted Strzok.

"No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it," Strzok responded.

In another text the two talked of an "insurance policy" against the election of then-candidate Trump. Page essentially confirmed in an interview with lawmakers that this referred to the Russia investigation.

She also explained that officials were proceeding with caution, concerned about the implications of the case while not wanting to go at "total breakneck speed" and risk burning sources as they presumed Trump wouldn't be elected anyway.

Horowitz, who was investigating the bureau’s handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state, is now investigating alleged surveillance abuses during the 2016 campaign.

Trump on Thursday issued a memo giving Attorney General William Barr the authority to declassify any documents related to surveillance of the Trump campaign in 2016.

"We want to be very transparent, so as you know, I declassified everything," Trump told reporters Friday. "We are exposing everything."

#3  Yes, there is a technical argument against using the T-word (and, given the alleged Hildabeast/DNC collusion with Steele & the Russians, an argument for it as well.) But, as with the Supreme Court justice discussing pr0n, "I know it when I see it."

I just hope that AG Barr will uncover enough evidence to send the coup plotters to a SuperMax for forever and a day.

German business with Iran down sharply as US sanctions bite
[Ynet] A German business group says German companies' trade with Iran has declined sharply as the United States turns up the economic heat on Tehran.

Treier said that, of 120 German companies that were active in Iran, only 60 are still in the country. He said that "the U.S. sanctions affect economic relations like a full embargo because the financial sector is affected."

The Saudi air force intercepted and destroyed the drone that targeted Jizan airport, close to the southern border with Yemen, the Riyadh-led coalition fighting the rebels was quoted as saying by the official Saudi Press Agency.

The rebels' al-Masirah TV said earlier that the drone targeted military hangars at Jizan airport.

The airport is used by thousands of civilians every day, but the coalition reported no casualties and warned the rebels of a strong response.

airport also near the Yemeni border with an explosives-laden drone.

That attack -- the third against Najran airport in 72 hours -- had targeted a Patriot air defence system, al-Masirah said.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 to push back an advance by the Houthi rebels, who still hold the capital Sanaa, and to restore to power President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.

Since then, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, many of them civilians, relief agencies say.

It has triggered what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with 24.1 million -- more than two-thirds of the population -- in need of aid.
This compares to probably more than half needing aid as measured by the UN before the war.

Afghanistan
UN expresses grave concern about accounts of Taliban ill-treatment of detainees
[KhaamaPress] The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed grave concern about credible accounts of Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
subjecting detainees to ill-treatment and actions that may amount to torture, as well as serious allegations that some detainees were killed.
"Tut tut. This will not do"
UNAMA released its preliminary findings earlier today regarding the ill-treatment of detainees by Taliban.

According to a statement released by UNAMA, the preliminary findings of the mission are based on interviews conducted with 13 prisoners who were released from Taliban prison late last month.

"They provided consistent accounts of the poor conditions in which they were held and credible claims of ill-treatment and torture, as well as the murder of civilians and security personnel. Multiple detainees reported the murder of at least 11 others by the Taliban," UNAMA said.

According to UNAMA, the group of 53 detainees freed from the Taliban-run facility known as Kalatak, located in the village of Shira in the Khas-Uruzgan district of Uruzgan, included 45 members of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces and eight civilians, including three civilian government officials. Most of the detainees had been held since 2018, with three held since 2016.

"All those released reported being shackled permanently. Some had scars on their ankles," UNAMA said, adding that all but one of the detainees interviewed by UNAMA reported being beaten.

UNAMA also added that some detainees reported that during the beatings the Taliban demanded they provide information or confess to specific acts.

The remainder of the detainees said the beatings were punishment for what they were told was supporting the government, working with Americans or fighting the Taliban.

All detainees reported being held incommunicado and underground in five overcrowded rooms. Detainees said that for a minimum of seven hours a day they were forced to labour, including making improvised bombs, contrary to international humanitarian law.

The detainees have also told UNAMA that they were held in sub-zero temperatures during winter and were fed beans and bread twice a day, with no medical aid apart from some painkillers and antiseptics for wounds.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
A legal war begins. (No not Trump - SpaceX vs AF)
[CNBC] Just revealed SpaceX lawsuit alleges Air Force ‘wrongly awarded’ billions to rocket competitors

KEY POINTS
  • The full SpaceX complaint alleges that the Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center “wrongly awarded” the funds “to a portfolio of three unproven rockets based on unstated metrics.”

  • The Air Force awarded $2.3 billion in rocket development contracts last year to competitors Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman and United Launch Alliance.

  • SpaceX alleges that the Air Force “determined that SpaceX’s one development launch vehicle,” or Starship, “rendered the entire SpaceX portfolio” as “high risk.”

#1  Jury is out on Blue Origin, though their engine seems to be progressing through development well. Northrop Grumman and ULA have a track record, so I think it's safe to say Vulcan and whatever else they are working on will fly no problem. Whether it's cost effective is totally unknown at this point. I'm pretty sure USAF has been directed by congress to avoid having only one vendor, so that's going to happen, short of a change in congress' thinking on the matter regardless of what Elon Musk would like to see.

#2  And I'd ad, the deeply beloved Augustine Commission said Constellation would be late and over budget. Never said it couldn't fly. And it was a Bath House operation, which the lovers should consider.

#3  United Launch Alliance has no proven track record of any kind. They are nothing more than a government subsidy program. Blue Origin seems to be progressing nicely, but they are definitely behind Space X by a large distance. Either of them winning contracts instead of Space X is a sign of corruption. No idea what Northrup Grumman has been doing recently, but have they gotten anything to fly yet? If not, they too are far behind Space X (and Blue Origin, for that matter).

#7  The Atlas V is ancient, all current projects are extremely late and overbudget, and you know what? I wouldn't call using imported Russian technology a great idea. So no. No points should be awarded for the Atlas V's existence. Especially since it is too underpowered to be of any actual use in next-gen projects.

#8  Also, 79 launches since it started launching in 2002? Really? That is completely pathetic by itself. Less than 5 a year. That number by itself should be evidence of incompetence.
