CSX, Or The Occasion You Just Missed
[Seeking Alpha] 2017 has been quite a "ride" for this railroads operator. After announcing the coming of Hunter Harrington as its new CEO at the beginning of the year, CSX (CSX) saw its new CEO passing away in December. While there was a clear "HH" effect on the stock when he hopped on board, shares haven’t been affected by his unexpected departure.

In fact, I don’t think it’s only Mr. Harrington’s work, but CSX did an amazing job on improving their margins by streamlining their business (less hump yards, less operating regions and 1 consolidated dispatching office). CSX came from "one of the worst" to "one of the best" railroads in regard to their operating ratio. But with such a strong stock price appreciation, is there anything left for future investors? I don’t think so over short-term, but CSX is certainly a keeper.

Understanding the Business

CSX is a railroad company operating over 21,000 miles of railways, with access to 70 ports and nationwide transloading and distribution services. This may seem big, but Union Pacific (UNP) shows 51,683 miles in comparison. CSX has roughly half UNP market capitalization ($56B vs $110B) too.

CSX was one of the railroad owner-operators most affected by the latest down cycle in commodities due to its strong presence in the coal transportation business. As of May 30 th, 2018, CSX business came from chemicals (20%), coal (19%), Intermodal (17%), automotive (11%), Agriculture & Food (11%), forest products (7%), metals & equipment (6%), minerals (5%) and fertilizers (4%).

Boeing Grabs Another Big Widebody Order
[Motley Fool] Boeing has received more orders for widebody planes year to date than it did in all of 2016. A recent 24-aircraft deal with FedEx added to Boeing's order momentum.

In 2017, Boeing (NYSE:BA) saw a somewhat surprising uptick in order activity after entering the year with modest expectations. The Boeing sales team is off to a great start in 2018, as well. By the end of May, the company had received 306 net orders for commercial jets compared to 205 during the same period in 2017.

Recently, Boeing has been particularly successful in selling widebodies -- the larger dual-aisle aircraft that typically serve longer international routes. This is a market segment that Boeing had expected to remain weak until around 2020.

#1  The rag is off the bush on the A380, the break even point on a A380 flight is more than the full capacity of a 787 which has a longer range and uses less fuel on routine overseas routes.

Check the numbers, Boeing sold more 787's last year than the full production to date plus orders of the A380.

The biblical case for closed borders
[Wash Times] Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a huge public relations hit for daring to quote scripture while explaining why borders should be secure, even if it means separating children from the adults who’ve carted them into the nation illegally in the first place.

But let’s get this straight, and straight-away: Borders are indeed biblical.

So is the rule of law. So is the concept of keeping out those born in other nations about whom U.S. immigration folk know little ‐ and that goes for children, as well as adults.

The left likes to whip out their Bible books and sell otherwise. But what do they know?

Democrats, after all, were the ones who removed mention of God from their national party platform back in 2012. Facing near-immediate fire, these Dems then quickly voted to revise that anti-God stance and put back what they had just taken out ‐ but it was hardly a do-over that ended decisively.

As ABC remembered it back in September 2012: "The first two voice votes [to put back God into the platform], which require a two-thirds majority to pass, were tied between ’ays’ and ’nos.’ On the third vote it was still hard to tell whether the ’ays’ were audibly louder than the ’nays’ in the half-full [Democratic convention] arena. When [convention chairman] Antonio Villaraigosa ... announced ’the ays have it,’ loud boos erupted across the arena."

Lovers of God the left are not.

Yet on borders, suddenly the Democrats are biblical scholars, as schooled on scriptural truths as, say, Rev. Franklin Graham.

Just recently, Nancy Pelosi railed: "The very hypocrisy of the attorney general to quote the Bible, the hypocrisy of all people of faith in our country not to clamor for what the administration is doing [at the border] ... For this administration to pose as people of faith and pose as people who care about family and children is of a height of hypocrisy that knows no bounds."

Spare us the sanctimony, please.

Pelosi spoke those words after Sessions brought up Romans 13, the chapter here the Apostle Paul tells how individuals should obey the laws set forth by God’s duly selected government leaders ‐ meaning, of course, even illegals.

But that’s not the only spot in the Bible that justifies this White House’s tougher immigration policy.

How about in Genesis where God destroyed the Tower of Babel, for one, and gave the builders different languages ‐ which then sent them scattering, seeking new lands to set up their own nations? Surely, that’s a creation of countries ‐ of countries with their own languages, cultures, laws and, dare say, boundaries-slash-borders. By God’s hands; by God’s design, no less.

Or there’s this, from Paul speaking in Acts 17: "The God who made the world and everything in it ... made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation."

Or this, the part where God tells Ezekiel, before commencing to divide the land into set portions: ’These are the boundaries by which you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel."

#6  Anguper Hupomosing9418, That line was saying that every male will have nothing to do with Ahab. Apparently it is quite normal for males to piss against the wall seeing there's no real functioning toilets then.

So standing to piss = Male. Squatting to piss = Female.

(Yes I looked it up and read the entire chapter)

Jehu was just appointed king of Israel and he was commanded to do battle against Ahab and wipe Ahab and his lineage out completely and to free all the men, both slaves and free men.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
The FBI Would Be Guilty Of Clear Bias If Its Trump Investigation Were A Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
[The Federalist] Conservatives stood agape last week at the inspector general’s refusal to state the obvious in his 568-page review of the FBI and Justice Department’s handling of the Clinton probe: A pro-Hillary political bias led officials to let her off the hook.

While Michael Horowitz’s report highlighted numerous instances of anti-Trump and pro-Hillary bias, in true lawyerly fashion he focused in the conclusion on the lack of "documentary or testimonial evidence" showing that political prejudice "directly affected" the decisions made in the investigation.

As a lawyer with a niche in employment law, this phrasing struck a chord of hilarity in me, because the methods of proving discriminatory intent are well-established, and such direct evidence of animus (or favoritism) is not required to show that an illegal motive drove an employment decision.

Under the federal statute that prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, or religion, a plaintiff must prove an employer took an adverse employment action because of the employee’s membership in a protected class. In other words, an employee must prove that because he is African-American, and not Caucasian, the employer denied him a promotion (or didn’t hire him, or fired him). Over the years, the courts have crafted two methods of proving discriminatory intent: the direct method and the indirect method.

Under the direct method, a plaintiff must present direct or circumstantial evidence of animus. Direct evidence basically involves an admission that the illegal animus, whether it be race or sex, national origin or religion, motivated the employment decision. "I fired Ed because he is too old to coach football," would be a simple example.

Circumstantial evidence may also establish discriminatory intent but requires an added inference. For instance, circumstantial evidence that racial animus motivated the employer could come in the form of past racist statements or racial slurs, even without the employer tying the employee’s race to the current employment decision. An employer’s past race-based employment decisions would likewise serve as evidence that race motivated the employer’s treatment of this employee.

IDF hits Gaza terrorists launching arson balloons
[IsraelNationalNews] Israeli forces opened fire on Arab terrorists operating out of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip Sunday afternoon, after the terrorists attempted to launch incendiary balloons towards Israeli territory.

The incident occurred in the southern Gaza Strip near the Israeli border, an Israeli military spokesperson said Sunday.

After Israeli forces spotted the terrorists attempting to launch the balloon bombs, an IDF aircraft opened fire on a vehicle used by the terror cell.

"An IDF aircraft targeted a vehicle used by a group of Palestinians who attempted to launch arson balloons from the southern Gaza Strip into Israeli territory," the spokesperson said.

There are no reports as of yet regarding casualties.

China Just Handed the World a 111-Million-Ton Trash Problem (opens to video)
[Bloomberg] Few people consider used plastic to be a valuable global commodity. Yet China has imported 106 million tons of old bags, bottles, wrappers and containers worth $57.6 billion since 1992, the first year it disclosed data. So when the country announced last year that it finally had enough of everybody else's junk, governments the world over knew they had a problem. They just didn’t know exactly how large it was.

Now they know. By 2030, an estimated 111 million metric tons of used plastic will need to be buried or recycled somewhere else‐or not manufactured at all. That's the conclusion of a new analysis of UN global trade data by University of Georgia researchers.

Everyone's bottles, bags and food packages add up. Factories have churned out a cumulative 8.3 billion metric tons of new plastic as of 2017, the same Georgia team reported last year. Even 1 million metric tons, the scale that this material trafficks in every year, is hard to visualize in the abstract. It's 621,000 Tesla Model 3s. It's 39 million bushels of corn kernels. The world’s 700 million iPhones make up roughly a tenth of a million metric tons.

Spengler: Tariffs Are Not the Way to Beat China
[PJMedia] America is stumbling into a trade war with China that just might undo most of the good that the Trump Administration has done for other parts of our economic policy. Yes, China is a huge threat to the United States. I've been shouting this from the rooftops for the past five years, while the neo-conservative conventional wisdom held that China would collapse of its own weight. Yes, China is determined to overtake us in critical technologies. And yes, China plays dirty.

As it stands the Trump Administration's China policy will lose us the war, and I hate it when that happens. With apologies to J.M. Barrie, the Administration has drifted into Navarro-Navarro Land. If we want to stay ahead of China we have to revive American innovation.
You can't revive American innovation as long as they steal any advance you make and produce it at half the price - cheap labor + government subsidies for taking over the market by selling below production costs
...Tariffs won't do much. The Trump Administration appears to think that the threat of tariffs will scare the Chinese into giving up their technological ambitions. They won't. Tariffs will hurt us as much as they hurt the Chinese, and the Chinese are much better at taking pain than we are.
IMO, Obama era and tolerance for the current left wing hooliganism argue otherwise.
...A trade deal to reduce the deficit might be well and good, but it doesn't solve our problem. In that respect I agree with the so-called hardliners, namely trade adviser Peter Navarro: the real issue is China's attempt to leapfrog the US in critical technologies. In a report issued Tuesday, Navarro cited six forms of Chinese "economic aggression":

1: State-sponsored IP theft through physical theft, cyber-enabled espionage and theft, evasion of US export-control laws, and counterfeiting and piracy.

2: Coercive and intrusive regulatory gambits to force technology transfers from foreign companies, typically in exchange for limited access to the Chinese market.

3: Economic coercion through export restraints on critical raw materials and monopsony purchasing power.

4: Methods of information harvesting that include open-source collection; placement of non-traditional information collectors at US universities, national laboratories, and other centers of innovation.

5: Talent recruitment of business, finance, science, and technology experts.

6: State-backed, technology-seeking Chinese investment.

...Tariffs won't work. A tariff war might succeed in reducing China's growth rate substantially and tipping the US into recession. But it won't stop China's gradual advance.

What should we do?

Old engagements
[DavidWarrenOnline] I am in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong, in June 1972. Well, really I am not, gentle reader. Rather I am glancing at a ragged old notebook, which I should have pitched decades ago. It has risen to the surface of a heap, a raft of dust and nostalgia. Forty-six years have gone by! Who scribbled all this pretentious nonsense? Me, I’m afraid. My best excuse is that I was not quite twenty. (I don’t suppose that will work any more.)

A short plump man is pacing his office, his hands as if tied behind his back. He is Derek Davies, editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review ‐ a weekly I once held in veneration; a constellation of brave, capable journalists, of many nationalities; who had sometimes got the magazine banned, or themselves locked up, in the countries from where they were reporting; the best newsmagazine in Asia. (And now, quite extinct.) It was also a late relic of the colonial era, and of the Fabian aspirations descending from the London School of Economics. Oh, gentle reader, the men who held dominion over palm and pine were progressive to the core.

We were discussing contemporary journalism. Rather, Mr Davies was discussing this, as he paced; I was listening politely.

"I have grown very tired of journalisme engagé," he asserted.

He was agreeing with something I had not quite said, about the tone and posturing I had witnessed among journalists in Vietnam, on a mission that had little to do with reporting. These were hacks indifferent to the truth, incurious about their sources, vain, self-serving, committed only to good salaries, and scoring political points. Though I was very young, I was already jaded from the experience of watching them concoct dramatic fantasies, in the hope these would pass for front page news, and win them Pulitzers. Yet few were as bad as their editors, back home, who added the finishing touches.

I made an exception for the photographers, who risked their skins in the field. Often they were surprisingly rightwing. This was because they’d had the opportunity to stare Communism in the face, and understood what the Americans were fighting. Whereas the writers, romanticizing the Viet Cong, strayed seldom from the comforts of Saigon.

Mr Davies knew all this. He told me several ear-curling stories, without mentioning his own correspondents. But he was not so brave to risk defying the bigger names, the self-made legends ‐ a gallery of well-connected leftists now long since forgotten. The limit of his ambition was to check their facts, when they were most egregiously mistaken. This was something, however, and it made the "FEER" a much more informative read than, say, Time magazine, or Newsweek ‐ as much "fake news" then as today, though in those days a little more sophisticated.

Not journalism, but only journalisme engagé; Mr Davies feared this would be the future. For a moment he was dark, for what he described was a spirit of malice; an overwhelmingly destructive attitude of mind; and deriving from that, a terrible blindness. The engaged journalist can no longer see what is right before his eyes. He makes no concession to realities. He cannot attribute ‐ to his "Johnson" or his "Nixon" or his "Trump" ‐ any particle of honest intention. He focuses instead a compulsive hatred, with no self-deprecating relief. In his imagination he beholds a pure monster.

He becomes what he beholds.

Springtime for leftists
[IsraelNationalNews] What happens in America does not stay in America. It moves to Israel ‐ politically speaking. Or maybe it’s the other way, from Israel to America.

So, they haven’t toppled Benjamin Netanyahu as of the moment, not for lack of trying, but they have snatched for themselves second prize.

Sara Netanyahu has been indicted on charges of fraud and breach of trust.
To these of you who didn't get the straight story - how can you with American press? She was basically Mike Flynned. They do have a cook who cooks for the family and used catering for official functions - because it's a lot cheaper: 100000$ in five years (the caterers probably giving them a discount and using "catering for PM official functions" for advertisement.
This has been coming for years, around the same time the prime minister himself has been under investigation for alleged corruption (he was charged by police for misconduct but not indicted) ‐ and it is not for us to touch this third rail of legalities, but only to marvel at what it’s like in both countries when Leftists go on the warpath.

We’re like twins.

Trump has been under withering scrutiny since he took office, and so it’s been for Netanyahu from day one.

For both leaders, success doesn’t count, so long as they wear the wrong label. Their enemies won’t give them a break even if they score win after win.

Progressives don’t like to lose, and when they do, they do get nasty. Through Robert Mueller and the entire left-wing media apparatus, they will probe the legitimacy of your election and failing that, they will go after your wife and kids, as Peter Fonda just did in a tweet so vile, the Secret Service had to be called in.

Yes, he apologized. It’s what they do after they’ve been caught sharing their true feelings, so on top of derangement, include hypocrisy as their daily double.

Before that it was Robert De Niro, and before that...well, all of them, or nearly so.

For Liberals, around here anyway, anything goes. Nothing is sacred. Courtesy of the Left, this is not the best of times in America.

The name-calling has been running on steroids.

No First Lady has ever encountered this. Never. Ever.

We don’t know if Mrs. Netanyahu was driven to tears over her legal difficulties, but we can be sure that Mrs. Trump was shaken by tweets calling for her son’s abduction.

No First Lady has ever encountered this. Never. Ever.

She never signed on for this ‐ and no feminists have rallied to her side. Is it any different for Sara Netanyahu?

Or are women sisters only if they vote and march a certain way?

From a distance, we can’t say that this is just another day in Israel, though on the latest for Sara Netanyahu, there must be cheering wherever Leftists gather.

The figuring must be that since they got her indicted, he must be next.

But it is just another day In America...another day when Liberals call everybody else a Nazi over the immigration snafu.

It is not the migrant kids they love so much, it is Trump they hate so much. They will try anything and use everything to destroy him...him and the millions who voted for him.

Those millions are the GOP silent majority that won’t remain silent if Leftists keep it going at this rate of vulgar animosity.

There will be a reckoning.
I remember being shocked when I read "Connecticut Yankee" as a teen and finding that Twain approved of French "Terror". But that was a long time ago when I believed that western leftists are mistaken but, basically, well meaning people - I grew in Soviet Union. No more, they are all Khmer Rouge for me now.

‘Sorry for the glass in the lasagna’: Staffer’s letter backs Sara Netanyahu

Worker at PM residence allegedly served family lasagna with glass from broken jar; her apology note said to show PM's wife at times had no competent cooks on hand, had to order in

Honestly, I’m appalled — I’d fire the person immediately and without references.

It is very clear that the media as a class loathe Mr. Netanyahu and those in his circle, and have been searching avidly for any lever that will bring him down.

As I recall, a previous attack on his wife was that she collected the empty bottles for recycling that would otherwise have gone into the trash after their official functions, or something like that, and kept the proceeds rather than turning the money in to the prime minister’s office.

47 Groups Weighing SPLC Lawsuit Warn 'Editors, CEOs': 'You Are Complicit' in Hate Group 'Defamation'
h/t Gates of Vienna
[PJMedia] On Wednesday, no fewer than 47 nonprofit leaders maligned by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) ‐ many if not most of whom are considering a lawsuit against the organization ‐ warned a vast array of executives and leaders that if they parrot the SPLC's damaging "hate group" labels, they would be "complicit" in "defamation."

"Editors, CEOs, shareholders and consumers alike are on notice: anyone relying upon and repeating its misrepresentations is complicit in the SPLC's harmful defamation of large numbers of American citizens who, like the undersigned, have been vilified simply for working to protect our country and freedoms," the signatories wrote.

The letter followed news ‐ broken at PJ Media ‐ that no fewer than 60 organizations are considering suing the SPLC following a groundbreaking settlement in which the organization formally apologized to a Muslim reformer, Maajid Nawaz, for branding him an "anti-Muslim extremist."

#1  ...As the Ol' Perfessor would say, 'Heh'.

More seriously, let me cite an example that the SPLC would have profited to remember - the Klan. When the FBI was finally turned loose on them, a lot of the fun went out of that sort of thing - after all, being a bully loses a lot of its appeal when you know that people will hit back twice as viciously. But the real death of the Klan didn't happen until the lawsuits started. Prison was one thing, that could be survived. But to come out and have NOTHING...to have and be less than the people you were trying to intimidate and oppress? That ended the Klan as a coherent organization. (Yes, you still see the occasional moron in hood and robe, and the media plays it up like the coming of the Apocalypse, but a state LE officer told me some years back that you could probably put every true active Klansman in the country in your local multiplex and still have seats left over.)

The SPLC has a great deal to answer for, and the gates are now open to a great many questions. And those questions will cost them a great deal of money.

Mueller may be preparing to hand off prosecution as part of winding down his investigation
[The Hill] Robert Mueller may be preparing to wind down the special counsel investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia and hand off at least one prosecution following the probe's conclusion.

The Washington Post reports that Mueller has added several prosecutors to his team, specifically assigned to the case against several Russian nationals charged in the alleged effort to spread disinformation using stolen identities during the 2016 election.

Mueller's new additions will likely take over that case, which is expected to last longer than the probe into Russian collusion in the election. The Post reports that the new hires are the first indication of Mueller preparing for the end of his investigation.

Mueller's indictment of 13 Russian nationals and organizations earlier this year is one of several that have been spawned by the ongoing special counsel investigation, including the indictments of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort for bank fraud and lobbying violations as well as several other former Trump associates.

Wait a minute. The investigation into Russian collusion has been going on now for what? A year and a half? Two years? It seems to me if they had an actual case against these Russian nationals they could go to trial tomorrow morning and be done with it in a week or a month tops. What's that old saying? Justice delayed is justice denied. If they have no case they should drop it.

FBI Turns Over Documents on Informants, Trump Campaign Surveillance
[Breitbart] The FBI handed over documents to House investigators this week detailing how senior law enforcement officials handled "surveillance records," involving Trump associates, along with documents on the agency’s informant program.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) warned on Sunday that he would take additional measures against Justice Department officials unless they complied with an April subpoena requesting documents regarding the agency’s surveillance of the Trump campaign.

"The deadline is this week," the California Republican told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. "So if documents begin to be turned over tomorrow and a clear way and path forward for everything else is not clear here in the next couple of days, there’s going to be hell to pay by Wednesday morning."

Investigators on the Hill will have an opportunity to learn more about the extent to which senior FBI and Justice Department officials knew about surveillance of the Trump campaign. On Friday, House Oversight and Judiciary Committees received over than 1400 pages of documents "relating to senior FBI or Justice Department officials’ requests to review or manage surveillance records that either involve or mention the Trump campaign or Trump administration," according to Politico.

Freedom Caucus leader Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) downplayed the transfer, branding reports that bureau and Justice Department officials have increased cooperation with lawmakers as "false."

"New reports of DOJ/FBI compliance with document requests are NOT accurate," Meadows tweeted. "While they have turned over additional documents, the new documents represent a small percentage of what they owe."

"The notion that DOJ/FBI have been forthcoming with Congress is false," he added.

Rather obvious I'd say. Providing evidence of participation (or knowledge) of a Christopher Steele (MI6) disinformation campaign would probably not be career enhancing.

Back to that bit yesterday about Steele being on the 'sign-in roster' at Foggy Bottom. Anyone from POLMIL or the Bureau at that gathering? Just asking.

Ivanka Trump Donates $50,000 To Texas Church Helping Illegal Aliens
[Hot Air] Ivanka Trump is credited with a $50,000 donation to a Plano, Texas church that helps those detained at the border. Let’s face it, it’s been a rough week with the press coverage of the situation on the border for illegal aliens and their children. While much of the overwrought reporting has been discredited and Barack Obama’s policies have come under a newly found scrutiny, First Daughter Ivanka quietly donated a chunk of change to help out those trying to come into our country the illegal way. NPR: Trump Staffers Are Hypocrites for Eating at Mexican Restaurants
[PJ] It's come to this: according to some, people should be picking their casual dining choices based on their politics.

NPR published an opinion piece by writer Monique Truong that claims in the headline that it is "hypocrisy" for administration members who support President Trump's way of handling the long-ignored border crisis to eat at Mexican restaurants. These are people who work for the president, of course, so they are essentially being taken to task for doing their jobs.

Truong considers recent forays to Mexican food dining establishments by administration policy adviser Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to be a "spectacle" that is "utterly galling to many Americans who object" to the recent policy of dealing with felony immigration offenders, which the president ended this week.

Truong acknowledges the pervasiveness of "Mexican-inspired" food in the United States. I'm from Tucson, it's not called "Mexican food" here, it's just "food." She concedes that it is now part of the "American table" but sternly lectures that we should be "appalled" that people who aren't on board with open borders and illegal immigration should choose to spend their hard-earned money at a Mexican restaurant. Her tortured logic asserts that since Mexican restaurants have "back-of-the-house" staff that "came from Mexico or Central America, with or without documents," people who oppose illegal immigration are experiencing a "disconnect" when dining at these establishments.

Of course, Truong can't precisely state it that way because the illegal nature of the situation is never even alluded to when open borders people are discussing the issue.

The FBI Needs to Be Turned on Its Head
[Townhall] Unless you have been hiding on a South Seas island, you have become quite aware of the Justice Department Inspector General’s (IG) report released regarding the Clinton Investigation plus more. There are so many points here, but let’s focus on the most important ones:

1. This has nothing to do with the everyday men and women of the FBI. FBI Director Christopher Wray should stop hiding behind them like his mother’s skirt. This is all about the leadership of the FBI ‐ the seventh floor of the building.

2. There was a culture created and protected that allowed a definitive bias to exist during the 2016 election and beyond in that group. That is on Comey’s head and there is no evidence Wray has obliterated that culture.
2 of 13 points.

Western Self-Loathing: The Disease
[Declination] Today, I intend to be very plain with my readers. I tire of beating around the bush. And to be frank, that is what I have been doing for quite some time, though this was not my intention.

You see, I have fallen victim to describing in detail the symptoms, and how they might best be treated, with too little regard for the disease itself. This is a common affliction during the twilight of the West. Left and Right alike know that the West is dying; that it is deeply ill. The Right proposes to treat the symptoms, the Left prescribes euthanasia. For them, death is the only cure to any disease.

My ancestor is reputed to have said, when given the opportunity to inspect the ax that was to behead him, "this is sharp medicine; but it is a sure cure for all diseases." Perhaps the Left has taken this too literally, or perhaps theirs is a cult that worships death. We can only speculate.

Our first instinct as men, when accused of a crime, is to plead our innocence and to offer our proofs. With an impartial jury, this may work if the proofs are good. If the accuser is malicious, however, and merely intends harm regardless of innocence, the pleas will please him. The proofs will be laughed at. He will feel powerful, presented with your own weakness.

Right now, as I type this, debates are raging across social media, and many of them are loaded with accusations of moral violation. These do not even contain the pretense of an impartial jury, as a legal violation might, but the consequences can be just as dire. Your job, your business, your possessions, your relationships, and reputation are all on the line. Are you, perhaps, a racist? Do you hate the poor? Do you stand on a cliff ready to push granny to her doom?

Plead your innocence and your accuser will laugh. Fail to plead, and your guilt is established. It is a Catch-22, a Kafkatrap. The mind recoils from resultant feelings of guilt and shame. This weapon is the most powerful one in the enemy’s arsenal. We have survived by ignoring it, hiding from it, or dismissing it, depending on one’s inclination. Facing the guilt and shame head-on is a daunting task only a few are truly capable of.

How did it come to this? Why is the weapon so effective?

Giant 6ft 6in British war hero dubbed ‘Big Bill' who won the Victoria Cross after fending off 6,000 Chinese and North Korean soldiers in Korean War dies at 90
[Mail] Bill Speakman, the first soldier to be awarded a Victoria Cross by the Queen, has died at the age of 90.

The 6ft 6in Korean War hero earned the medal after fighting off Chinese and North Korean soldiers with beer bottles and rocks when he ran out of ammunition.

In 1951, he was attached to the King's Own Scottish Borderers at the height of the Korean War when the regiment's position came under a ferocious Chinese attack.

After he ran out of grenades he began throwing empty beer bottles at the enemy repelled charge after charge, enabling his vastly outnumbered company to withdraw safely.

[IsraelTimes] Hundreds of Paleostinians demonstrated
Golly. Hundreds?
Saturday in the West Bank to demand the Paleostinian Authority lift punitive measures against the Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,-run Gazoo Strip.

Demonstrators in Ramallah chanted "scrap the sanctions!" during protests against the Paleostinian Authority, organized by civil society groups.

The Ramallah-based administration has introduced a series of measures against Gazoo over the past year. Tens of thousands of its civil servants in the coastal enclave, separated from the West Bank by Israeli territory, have gone without full pay for months. Critics say such moves by the PA, dominated by the Fatah movement of PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, further exacerbate the split between the two parts of the Paleostinian territories.

The rally passed peacefully, unlike a protest on June 13 during which Paleostinian security forces fired stun grenades and tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

On Saturday, coppers were seen handing out Paleostinian flags to the protesters.

Muslim cleanup project ‘illegally disturbed, removed’ ancient soil on Temple Mt
Photos, video and more at the link.
[IsraelTimes] Hundreds of Moslem volunteers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound atop Jerusalem’s Temple Mount illegally disturbed and removed archaeologically rich earth and ancient stones during a communal cleanup project in the final days of Ramadan last week, an Israeli archaeologist and activist has charged.

Video footage of the multi-day project at the contested holy site shows volunteers with shovels and rakes last week shifting and removing portions of two mounds on the eastern side of the compound made up of earth dumped by the Moslem Waqf custodians during unauthorized excavations since the early 2000s, said Zachi Dvira on behalf of the Committee to Prevent the Destruction of Antiquities on the Temple Mount (CPDATM).

The 37-acre walled compound ‐ Judaism’s holiest site as the place of the biblical Temples, and the third-holiest spot in Islam ‐ is the most politically volatile location in the country.

Border cops shoot West Bank Palestinian who arouses suspicion
[IsraelTimes] A Paleostinian man was shot by Border Police officers in the West Bank after arousing their suspicion and ignoring calls to stop, police said.

The suspect got out of a cab near a checkpoint in the Jerusalem area village of Abu Dis and walked toward the officers while carrying a suspicious black bag, according to police, who said the man was cursing and called out "holy shit! Allahu akbar."
Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning.
"Immediately the protocols for stopping a suspicious person were conducted during which one of the officers had gun sex. When this and calls for [the suspect] to stop went unanswered he was shot in leg and neutralized," police said.

Police said the suspect, a resident of the West Bank village of Sa’ir in his 30s, was lightly maimed by the gunshot and taken for treatment after being tossed in the clink
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
Bomb sappers called to the scene examined the black bag and found nothing suspicious. Police however stressed the officers "acted as expected in light of the circumstances of the incident."

[Rudaw] Iran has prepared a list of 1,339 items it will soon cease to import in order to protect domestic producers and manage the outflow of currency as the nation braces for fresh US sanctions.

Mohammad Shariatmadari, Iran’s minister of industry, mines and business, announced the bans on Saturday, according to Tasnim news agency.

Iranian authorities are bracing for the return of US sanctions. On May 9, US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, sending shockwaves through the Iranian economy.

In the last six months, Iran’s currency has lost more than 50 percent of its value.
One May 21, Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, announced a list of 12 demands of Iran, promising "unprecedented sanctions" if the Islamic Theocratic Republic does not stop its nuclear program and regional adventurism.

Since the US decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal, several multinational companies have announced the suspension of operations in Iran, including the French oil company Total, the world’s largest container shipping company Maersk, and multinational airplane producers Airbus and Boeing.

In the last six months, Iran’s currency has lost more than 50 percent of its value. Iranians have reacted by trying to invest in dollars and gold. The price of some items, like cars and gold coins, has increased 10-20 percent.

Some Iranian activists, like footballer Ali Karimi, took to social media to dispute the inflation rates, calling on Iranians not to buy any expensive items for one month.

The Iranian government is trying to restrict demand for dollars by putting a ban on "unnecessary" and "lucrative" foreign items and could be bought from local producers.

Banned items will include clothes, sugar, cars, shoes, makeup and pharmaceuticals.

Iran has also imposed new regulations on travel to control the outflow of dollars. Iranians have to pay an exit fee when leaving the country, which is liable to increase.

According to Eghtesad News, Iranians crossing land-borders with neighboring countries for the first time have to pay 220,000 toman. A second visit will cost them 330,000 toman, and a third time 450,000 toman.

The fees are designed to discourage Iranians from travelling and spending money abroad.

Although the Islamic Theocratic Republic has long experience of managing external sanctions, a new squeeze on the economy could lead to more social and political unrest.

Iraq
Iraqi PM Abadi and cleric Sadr agree to form political alliance
Dividing the spoils of government between themselves?
[Rudaw] Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Shi’ite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
, whose Sayirun alliance won the most seats in Iraq’s May 12 election, agreed to form an alliance during a meeting in the holy Shi’ite city of Najaf on Saturday.

It comes after Sadr announced an alliance with Hadi al-Amiri, a leading Hashd al-Shaadi commander and head of the Fatih coalition, earlier in June.

Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) coalition came in third place in the disputed election, which is undergoing a manual recount.

It is not clear whether this means Sayirun, Fatih, and Nasr are uniting to form a government, or whether the agreement between Sadr and Abadi voids the earlier agreement with Amiri.

In a presser following their meeting, Sadr said the alliance would be cross-sectarian and based on eight common points. Other parties that subscribe to these points will be invited to join their alliance.

1. The alliance must not based on ethnicity and sects, and should include all Iraqi groups.

2. It will fight corruption and put corrupt officials in court. Anti-corruption institutions will be reinforced.

3. A technocratic government based on meritocracy.

4. Improvement of military and police forces. Only the government should be armed.

5. The establishment of a reformist program for all economic sectors.

6. Balanced relations with all countries without foreign interferance in Iraqi affairs.

7. Support for the Iraqi judicial system, improving the role of the public prosecutor.

8. Protect Iran's territorial integrity and illusory sovereignty and insist on the peaceful transition of power.

Parliament called for a manual recount of votes after allegations of the electronic voting system being hacked and other irregularities with the system that was new to Iraq.

Sadr has expressed concern that a re-run of the election, if this is the conclusion reached after the manual recount, would only increase public apathy towards politics.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
he advised all parties to abide by the law, even if they are not convinced by it, and called on the judiciary to remain neutral when doing the manual recount.

He also warned against taking too long to complete the manual recount.

"In case of a delay in the manual recount until July 1st of this year, the government has to adhere to the law and not extend its jurisdiction and not take advantage of the constitutional limbo," Sadr said in a statement on Thursday.

Abadi had pointed out the day before that the results are not considered final until the supreme court ratifies them. Until then, his government will continue to work with Abadi insisting there is no power vacuum.

Sadr advised government ministries, especially the service-oriented ones, to continue working so that political and electoral rivalries "don’t exacerbate the suffering of the nation."

Sadr’s Sayirun bloc ran on a cross-sectarian and reform-minded platform. Though no party was given a strong mandate by voters, Sadr emerged as the victor and his position initially appeared robust as he engaged in talks with parties from across the spectrum.

His alliance with Sunni leaders, however, took a hit when he made overtures with Shiite parties that have ties to Iranian-backed militias.

Sadr on Thursday called on political blocs to move forward towards "serious dialogue to obtain the proper alliances" for real reform.

While he did insist that "reform will be victorious" and hopes a manual recount will not pave the way for the "return of the corrupt," he lamented that the political process has fallen into the hands of "the corrupt and the power hungry."

raid and suicide kaboom on a village in northeastern Nigeria, residents told AFP on Saturday

A male jacket wallah detonated his explosives among a group of residents sleeping in the open in Tungushe village in Borno state at about 12:15 am (2315 GMT Friday).

The blast was followed by indiscriminate gunfire from Boko Haram Islamist forces of Evil lurking in the dark, said Mustapha Muhammad, a civilian militia leader in the area.

"Five people have been killed and six others injured in the attack," Muhammad said by telephone from the village, which lies six kiometres (nearly four miles) north of the Borno state capital Maiduguri.

Tungushe resident Umara Kyari, who gave similar casualty toll, said the attackers torched eight thatched houses and three vehicles before stealing about 100 cows.

"Fortunately all the cows returned to the village," said Kyari. "I think the attackers are not used to herding cows and could not control them."

Boko Haram regularly uses suicide bombers, mostly women and maiden of tender yearss, to target mosques, schools, bus stations and military locations.

Its nine-year armed violence to establish a hardline Islamic state in remote northeastern Nigeria has killed more than 20,000 people.

Suicide attacks have increased in Borno state recently, prompting the military commander fighting the Islamist forces of Evil to offer a five-million-naira ($13,900) reward for information on bomb-making factories in the region.

On June 16, six maiden of tender yearss killed 43 people in suicide attacks in the town of Damboa, 80 kilometres outside Maiduguri.

On Wednesday, 15 people were maimed when two exploding trollop female suicide bombers targeted a market on the edge of a military base in the city.

Turkish police detain 47 suspected coup supporters: CNN Turk
[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish police have detained 47 people in an operation targeting alleged supporters within the army of a network accrued by Ankara of orchestrating a failed military coup two years ago, private broadcaster CNN Turk said on Saturday.

The operation, which began on Tuesday, targeted 124 people accused of being followers of U.S.-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, CNN Turk said.

Ankara accuses Gulen of being behind the abortive putsch on July 15, 2016, a charge he denies.

The suspects were said to have operated as religious guides for high-ranking military personnel, it said. The operation, which focused on the central Ottoman Turkish city of Konya and was spread over 31 provinces, comes ahead of Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
Turkey has detained 160,000 people and dismissed nearly the same number of state employees since the coup attempt, the U.N. human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
office said in March. Of that number, more than 50,000 have been formally charged and kept in jail during trial.

Critics of President Tayyip Erdogan say he has used the failed putsch as a pretext to quash dissent. Turkey says the measures are necessary to combat threats to national security.

Erdogan, who has dominated Ottoman Turkish politics for a decade and a half, is tipped to win the presidential election but possibly only in a run-off set for early July, opinion polls suggest.

The situation makes it difficult for the government to raise more foreign exchange through international bonds, which increases "government liquidity risks".

US must find alternatives to detaining children and migrants, says UN
[DAWN] The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
called on the Trump administration on Friday to overhaul its migration policies and find alternatives to detention, saying that migrant children and their parents should not be treated like criminals.

The United States has faced fierce criticism for separating more than 2,300 children from their families in order to prosecute their parents for crossing the border from Mexico illegally.

President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
backed down on Wednesday, signing an executive order to keep families together in detention during immigration proceedings.

"While we acknowledge the US government’s decision not to continue separating children from their parents, we understand that the practice now will be to detain the children with their parents," UN human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva briefing.

"We have said time and again the children should never be detained in relation to their or their parents’ migration status. It is never in the best interests of the child for them to be detained," she added.

Video footage of children sitting in cages and an audiotape of wailing children sparked worldwide anger.

Trump suggested on Friday that some of the wrenching tales that have emerged from the border were fabricated by Democrats before congressional elections in November. "We cannot allow our Country to be overrun by illegal immigrants colonists as the Democrats tell their phony stories of sadness and grief, hoping it will help them in the elections," he tweeted.

The US military has been asked to get ready to house up to 20,000 immigrant children, US officials said on Thursday.

Shamdasani, asked about the prospect of using military bases, replied: "Irregular migration should not be a criminal offence, these people should not be treated as criminals."

Italy refuses rescue ship carrying 224 migrants to dock
[FOXNEWS] Italia’s new hardline, anti-immigrant interior minister has refused port to a Dutch-flagged rescue ship carrying more than 200 migrants colonists because it is now in Maltese waters.

On Thursday, Matteo Salvini accused the ship, which is operated by German NFO Mission Lifeline, of acting improperly by taking on board the 224 migrants colonists that the Italian coasties had assigned to the Libyan coasties to rescue. He claimed the rescue was in Libyan waters, which Lifeline denies.

"I want to save lives but I’m paid by Italians to defend the safety of Italian citizens. I don’t accept there are organizations of pseudo-volunteers that endanger the lives of those who flee Africa and then think to disembark them all in Italia," he said.

He added that those on board the ship "will only see Italia on a postcard".

Russia officially enters southwest Syria offensive despite US warnings
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian military officially entered the southwest Syria offensive this evening, a source told al-Masdar from the Dara’a Governorate.

The Russian Aerospace Forces unleashed a massive assault over northeastern Dara’a, tonight, targeting several areas controlled by the jihadist rebels.

According to a military source in the government stronghold of Izra’a, the Russian Aerospace Forces launched over 20 Arclight airstrikes across northeastern Dara’a tonight.

The source told al-Masdar that the Russian Aerospace Forces specifically launched airstrikes over the towns of Masikah, Aeeb, and Busra al-Harir.

The added that the majority of the airstrikes were launched on the jihadist stronghold of Busra al-Harir, which is located directly east of Izra’a.

This attack by the Russian Aerospace Forces comes just 48 hours after the U.S. State Department issued a stern warning to both the Russian and Syrian governments about escalating their offensive in southwest Syria.

WSJ - Mueller's Fruit of the Poisonous Tree
[WSJ] It makes no difference how honorable he is. His investigation is tainted by the bias that attended its origin in 2016.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation may face a serious legal obstacle: It is tainted by antecedent political bias. The June 14 report from Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general, unearthed a pattern of anti-Trump bias by high-ranking officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Some of their communications, the report says, were "not only indicative of a biased state of mind but imply a willingness to take action to impact a presidential candidate’s electoral prospects." Although Mr. Horowitz could not definitively ascertain whether this bias "directly affected" specific FBI actions in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, it nonetheless affects the legality of the Trump-Russia collusion inquiry, code-named Crossfire Hurricane.

Crossfire was launched only months before the 2016 election. Its FBI progenitors‐the same ones who had investigated Mrs. Clinton‐deployed at least one informant to probe Trump campaign advisers, obtained Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court wiretap warrants, issued national security letters to gather records, and unmasked the identities of campaign officials who were surveilled. They also repeatedly leaked investigative information.

A US Navy master chief was shot 5 times in Afghanistan ‐ now she's ready for combat again
That sailor is tougher than woodpecker's lips.
[Business Insider] Navy Master Chief Raina Hockenberry remembers everything from that day in 2014 when an Afghan soldier shot her five times.

She was serving as the senior enlisted leader position for Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan. Hockenberry was part of a group visiting a basic training facility for Afghan soldiers.

"We stopped for our last briefing of the day, and one of the Afghan soldiers just opened fire through a window," she told reporters at the Pentagon Wednesday describing the green-on-blue attack that wounded 13 other military personnel that day. "He just started shooting."

Hockenberry suffered two gunshot wounds to the right leg, shattering her tibia. She was shot once in the groin and twice in the stomach.

Answer's easy enough. For every execution of an ISIS prisoner, two immediate executions of ISIS members on death row, starting with female prisoners.
In the video released by the Islamic State’s media wing al-Amaq, the six Iraqi prisoners can seen calling on the government to release the terrorist group’s women in order to save their lives.

According to BasNews, the six prisoners come from al-Anbar and Karbala.

The Iraqi government has yet to issue a response to this demand from the Islamic State.

Five charity workers gang-raped in India
[DAWN] CHENNAI: Five Indian anti-trafficking campaigners were gang-raped at gunpoint during an awareness programme they were organising in a village, police said on Friday.

Unidentified men picked up nine activists during a street play performance in Kochang village in Jharkhand state and drove them into a dense forest, where the men were beaten up and the women raped, police officer Ashwini Kumar Sinha said.

"It is a very rare case, where people working on anti-trafficking have been targeted," Sinha told this news agency in a phone interview from Khunti district of Jharkhand.

"We are not ruling out the possibility of the involvement of trafficking gangs and are investigating all aspects." The street play had been organised by charity Asha Kiran, which runs a shelter home for the rehabilitation of rescued girls in Khunti district of Jharkhand, which has been identified as a trafficking hotspot.

There are around 200 rescued girls in Asha Kiran’s shelter. Most of were trafficked into domestic servitude to cities where a growing middle class is looking for cheap live-in labour.

Jharkhand is among the top five states in India that reports increasing cases of human trafficking, with traffickers targetting poor villages, convincing vulnerable families to send their daughters away for employment, campaigners said.

For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranian military commander killed in Syria near Iraq border
[Rudaw] A top Iranian military commander has been killed in eastern Syria near the Iraqi border, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has confirmed. No details have been given as to the circumstances of his death.

Brigadier General Shahrokh Daipour was killed on Friday in the town of Albu Kamal, according to Fars news agency.

Daipour, who is originally from Kermanshah, was in Syria to train regime forces. He was a former unit commander during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).

Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, Iran has played a key role in supporting the regime of Bashir al-Assad, deploying thousands of its own personnel. Iran says its troops are only there as military advisers.

In April, Israeli jets targeted Syrian government military bases, reportedly killing Iranian forces.

On February 7, 2017, Seyed Mohammad Ali Shahidi Mahallati, Iran’s Director of Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs (DFMVA), said the families of more than 1,000 Iranian military forces killed in Syria are under the support of the DFMVA.

In March, during another event in Tehran, Mahallati said the DFMVA is taking care of 2,100 families of military personals killed in Syria and Iraq.

At the end of 2017, widespread protests swept Iran as people protested the nation’s involvement in Syria and demanded better living conditions.

Israeli officials have repeatedly asked Iranian military forces to withdraw from Syria. In May, Russia, another key Assad ally, said all foreign forces must leave Syria.

On May 21, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a list of 12 demands of Iran, including the withdrawal Iranian forces from Syria.

As Iran is expected to face more economic hardship with the return of US sanctions, it will be more costly for Iran to have a large military presence in Syria.
The Times of Israel adds:
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Saturday that one of its senior commanders was killed on Friday while fighting Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. fighters in northeastern Syria.

The exact circumstances of Shahrokh Daiepour’s death were not disclosed, but the state-run Fars news agency said he had been involved in training fighters from the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy which has been fighting in Syria alongside forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
Daiepour had served as a commander in the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s Navy during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.

He was said to have been killed in the same area bordering Iraq where a massive air strike killed more than 50 pro-regime fighters last week. Damascus has accused the US-led coalition of carrying out the late-night June 17 strike on al-Hari, a town near the Iraqi border controlled by regional militias fighting in the complex seven-year war on behalf of Assad.

The day after the attack, a US official also told AFP that Washington "has reasons to believe that it was an Israeli strike."

Israel declined to comment, but a strike so far from its border would differ from most other strikes in Syria attributed to Israel, which have largely taken place closer to Syria’s borders with Israel and Leb.

The target, apparently Shiite Iraqi militia fighters loyal to Assad, would also mark a shift for Israel, which has previously only carried out Arclight airstrikes against Iran’s forces and its proxies, according to reports.

At a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel was "taking action ‐ against efforts to establish a military presence by Iran and its proxies in Syria both close to the border and deep inside Syria. We will act against these efforts anywhere in Syria."

Katie Arrington, who ousted Rep. Mark Sanford in primary, seriously injured in car crash
[FOXNEWS] Katie Arrington, who ousted incumbent South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford in a Republican congressional primary this month, was maimed in a car accident on Friday -- in a wreck that left one person dead.

In a statement posted to Facebook, her campaign said that she underwent surgery after she was injured when a driver traveling in the wrong direction hit her vehicle. A friend who was also in the car was maimed.

The Post and Courier reported that the driver in the other vehicle died at the scene.

Her office said that she suffered a fracture in her back, several broken ribs and other injuries that required surgery including the removal of part of her small intestine and a portion of her colon.

"Additionally, the main artery in her legs has a partial collapse and will require a stent," the statement said. "Additional surgeries will be required including one likely today; and it is likely that Katie will remain hospitalized for the next two weeks."

"As her family asked last night, Katie asks for your continued prayers for the dear departed and the dear departed's family, as well as prayers for a quick recovery for Katie and her friend."

Arrington's Democratic rival, Joe Cunningham, said that he was suspending his campaign until futher notice. President Trump tweeted that he was sending his thoughts and prayers to all those involved in the accident and their families.

Chapur was spotted hanging out with Sanford and members of his staff at last week’s annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park. Seated near the first base line, a casually dressed Sanford, who generously passed out cans of beer to those around him, was accompanied by Chapur, looking tanned in a sleeveless black top. It was the striking Argentinian brunette’s 2009 affair with the then-married governor of South Carolina that gave whole new meaning to the term “hiking the Appalachian Trail.”

One Dead, Scores Wounded In Æthiopia PM’s Rally Blast
[RADIOSHABELLE] An kaboom has struck a large rally by supporters of Æthiopia’s new, reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, killing at least one person and wounding dozens of others.

Abiy had just wrapped up his speech at the capita’s Meskel Square before tens of thousands of people on Saturday when the kaboom went off, sending droves of supporters towards the stage as the prime minister left hurriedly.

In an address broadcast afterwards on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
, Abiy said the blast was orchestrated by groups who wanted to undermine the rally but did not name them.

"The people who did this are anti-peace forces. You need to stop doing this. You weren’t successful in the past and you won’t be successful in the future."

He said several people had been killed, but Æthiopia’s Health Minister later adjusted that statement, saying one person had passed away at Addis Ababa’s Black Lion Hospital.

In an earlier post on Twitter, Fitsum Arega, the prime minister’s chief of staff, said person or persons unknown launched a grenade attack on the rally.

"Some whose heart is filled with hate attempted a grenade attack. HE PM Abiy is safe. All the casualties are deaders of love & peace. HE PM sends his condolences to the victims. The perpetrators will be brought to justice," Fitsum said.

The state broadcaster quickly cut away from coverage of the rally, which has broken up with people singing, chanting and going back to their homes.

Ambulances were at the scene in the crowded Meskel Square in Addis Ababa where the prime minister had been addressing thousands of supporters.

Intense clashes breakout in northern Aleppo for first time in days
[ALMASDARNEWS] Intense festivities broke-out between the jihadist rebels and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the northwestern suburbs of Aleppo tonight.

The jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
launched several missiles and artillery shells towards the northwestern districts of Aleppo this evening, prompting a powerful response from the Syrian Arab Army shortly after.

According to a military source in the scenic provincial capital, the Syrian Arab Army launched a barrage of missiles towards the jihadist-held suburbs of Kafr Hamra and al-Layramoun, scoring direct hits on a number of targets.

Both parties are now exchanging heavy artillery and missiles in the al-Zahra’a Association Quarter, as they seek to inflict as much damage on one another’s defenses.

Tonight’s festivities in northern Aleppo mark the first time in several days that the jihadist rebels and Syrian Arab Army have exchanged hostilities in these suburbs.

Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa says he was 'inches' from Bulawayo explosion
[BBC] Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has survived an apparent bomb attack at a rally in the city of Bulawayo. Mr Mnangagwa said an object "exploded a few inches away from me - but it is not my time".
Betcha somebody else's is close though.
Video footage from White City Stadium shows an explosion happening close to Mr Mnangagwa as he was leaving the stage having addressed supporters.

While the president was unhurt, state TV reports that Vice-President Kembo Mohadi has suffered a leg injury. Mr Mnangagwa says he has visited the injured in hospital. He condemned the violence as senseless and pleaded for unity.

Mr Mnangagwa came to power last November, ousting his former mentor Robert Mugabe.

The president was in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city and an opposition stronghold, to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of nationwide elections taking place on 30 July.

"People started running in all directions and then immediately the president's motorcade left at a very high speed," an AFP correspondent at the scene reported.

The elections are the first in Zimbabwe since Mr Mugabe was ousted after 37 years in power.

PAT will not participate in elections: Dr Tahirul Qadri
[DAWN] Pakistain Awami Tehrik (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri
...Pak politician, and would-be dictator, founder and head of Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran and Pakistain Awami Tehrik. He usually resides in Canada, but returns to Pakistain periodically to foam at the mouth and lead demonstrations. Depending on which way the wind's blowing, Qadri claims to be the author of Pak's blasphemy law. Other times he says it wasn't him...
on Saturday announced that the party will not participate in the upcoming General Elections.

Flanked by party officials in a presser in Lahore, he said that the PAT had decided not to contest the elections because "the entire system" was "flawed and could not be called a democracy".

Dr Qadri said that the PAT will not become a part of the electoral process and would not be issuing tickets to any candidates.

On being asked, he clarified that he had deliberately never used the word 'boycott' and was only saying that PAT would not participate in the process as a political party.

Iraqi Air Force kills Baghdadi’s cousin, several ISIS commanders in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Iraqi Air Force carried out a strategic bombing, Saturday, that targeted the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. ’s (ISIS) command meeting in Syria.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, their F-16 bombers targeted an Islamic State central command meeting that was being held in eastern Syria this weekend.

The F-16 bombers annihilated the entire building where the meeting was held, killing more than 45 Islamic State combatants and their leaders.

Among the Islamic State bully boyz that were killed this weekend was the cousin of the group’s infamous leader and founder Ibrahim His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
This targeted bombing is another major blow to the terrorist group this week, as their first symbolic loss took place at Tal Safouk, which is a border-crossing that was lost to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Tal Safouk was where the leaders of the Islamic State first announced the start of their so-called ’caliphate’ in both Iraq and Syria.

Students to return to Arish University for first time since Feb: North Sinai official
[AlAhram] Students enrolled at North Sinai’s Arish University will be returning to their lecture halls on Saturday as classes resume after almost five months of suspension due to a major counter-terrorism campaign in the area.

North Sinai governorate has decided to allow the university and a number of other higher education facilities in Arish to resume operations, according to a statement from governorate officials reported by al-Ahram al-Massai daily on Thursday.

The students to return to Arish University are those in their final year of studies. Buses will be provided to transfer them to the campus, the statement said.

It was not immediately clear whether students in other years would also be returning to classes.

In February, classes at universities and schools in Arish were suspended when the Egyptian military launched a major counter-terrorism operation.

The operation, dubbed Operation Sinai 2018, aims to target and destroy "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" in northern and central Sinai, parts of the Nile Delta and the country's Western Desert, the military has said.

Final-year high school students in North Sinai have also returned to their schools to sit the end-of-year thanaweya amma exams, which determine university placement. Officials in the governorate have been reported as saying that the process is running smoothly.

On Thursday, the Egyptian army said it had killed 32 takfiri

dozens of suspects, bringing the total number of those killed since Operation Sinai 2018 began to more than 300, including at least 37 military personnel, according to calculations based on military statements.

Civilians flee combat zones around Hodeida
[DAWN] Clashes between Yemeni government forces and Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels around the Red Sea port city of Hodeida eased on Friday as more civilians fled the combat zones for fear of a fierce showdown, a UN humanitarian agency said.

"More people are fleeing areas of conflict and seeking shelter in safer locations, including in the capital Sanaa," 150 kilometres to the northeast and also under rebel control, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.

It said some of the displaced had arrived in the capital but specific figures were not yet available. On Thursday, OCHA said more than 30,000 residents of Hodeida and the province of the same name had fled their homes this month.

The latest violence was "at a less severe scale, as a general decrease in festivities, bombardments and air strikes has been reported", said OCHA.

"Humanitarian partners continue to respond to the needs of the displaced population" with the provision of food, water and health services in and around Hodeida, it said.

In the port city itself, however, "access to warehouses has become difficult due to ongoing fighting and blockage of some roads".

General Murad formally introduced as new commander of Kabul Garrison
Because some of our readers may be familiar with the gentleman, and glad to hear of his new assignment.
[Khaama Press] General Murad Ali Murad was formally introduced as the new commander of Kabul Garrison Command, nearly a month after he was dismissed as the deputy interior minister for security.

Defense Minister Gen. Tariq Shah Bahrami introduced Gen. Murad as the new commander of Kabul Garrison Command during a ceremony in Kabul today.

He said Gen. Murad has been appointed as the new commander of Kabul Garrison Command and deputy defense minister for the security affairs of capital Kabul.

This comes as the ministry of interior officials last month announced that Gen. Murad had been dismissed as the senior deputy interior minister for security.

Deputy front man for the ministry of interior Nusrat Rahimi had confirmed that Gen. Murad has been appointed as the new commander of Kabul Garrison Command.

Earlier, reports had emerged that Gen. Murad has been dismissed from his post as the senior deputy interior minister for security following a suicide kaboom in Kabul.

The attack in western part of Kabul city had targeted a center which operated for the distribution of electronic national identity cards.

IAF fires warning shots at Gazans launching incendiary kites
[Ynet] As the kite terrorism continues, 3 fires break out in the western Negev, leading the IAF to target kite launchers east of Gazoo City; Paleostinians start flying incendiary devices from homes to avoid IDF detection, favoring balloons that can fly further.

An IAF aircraft fired warning shots Saturday at cell attempting to dispatch incendiary kites from the northern Gazoo Strip into Israel.

According to a Paleostinian source, the cell attempted to launch the kites east to Gazoo City.

Earlier, three fires broke out in Givat Yehuda, Be'eri and Kissufim as a result of incendiary balloons flown from Gazoo. Firefighters were able to gain full control of flames.

The incendiary balloon launchers have changed their modus operandi in recent days and have begun flying the balloons from private homes and back yards in an effort to avoid being spotted and thwarted by the IDF.

In addition, the Paleostinians appear to be favoring balloons over kites, since the balloons can more easily get further into Israeli territory.

In an effort to combat the threat, Israeli defense technology company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has been developing a new detection system‐the Sky Spotter‐to identify incendiary balloons and kites launched from Gazoo.

The electro-optical system was originally developed to detect drones and was later adjusted to thwart incendiary balloons and kites.

The system has a long-range digital camera, which is able to identify the incendiary objects the minute they are flown into the air and can estimate their landing location.

The early detection will later enable drones to efficiently intercept the incendiary balloons and kites.

Rebels launch fresh attack in southeast Daraa
[ALMASDARNEWS] The rebel forces launched a fresh attack against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in southeast Daraa tonight.

According to a military source in the government stronghold of Izra’a, the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) and their allies launched a powerful attack on the Syrian Arab Army’s positions at the Barid Checkpoint that is located near the Sweida-Daraa axis.

The source added that the rebel forces managed to infiltrate the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses at the Barid Checkpoint; this prompted the government to send reinforcements from Sweida City to this front.

Not long after the rebel forces infiltrated their positions at the Sweida-Daraa axis, the Syrian Arab Army launched a counter-attack to retake the checkpoint and secure this area.

A number of murderous Moslems were killed and maimed during the brief rebel assault, including several members of the Free Syrian Army and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
The rebel attack was launched in response to the Syrian Arab Army’s large-scale offensive in northeast Daraa, which has already yielded big gains for the government.

Suspect in NYC bike path killings invokes ‘Allah,’ defends ISIS
[FOXNEWS] A man charged with murdering eight people on a New York City bike path invoked "Allah" and defended the Islamic State

group in court Friday, reports said.

Sayfullo Saipov, 30, raised his hand to speak out immediately after U.S. District Judge Vernon S. Broderick set an Oct. 7, 2019, date for the Uzbek immigrant's trial.

He said he cared about "Allah" and the holy war being waged by the Islamic State group.

"So the Islamic State is not fighting for land, like some say, or like some say, for oil. They have one purpose, and they're fighting to impose Sharia (Islamic law) on Earth," he said.

Prosecutors had been seeking an April 2019 trial date. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Houle said the families of the dead and the dozens who were maimed deserve a "prompt and firm trial date."

"The victims here are anxious now when that trial is going to be," she said. "The public deserves a speedy trial, and the surviving victims deserve to know when that trial is going to be."

Following his arrest, Saipov requested that the ISIS flag be displayed in his hospital room, the New York Daily News reported, citing court documents.

Saipov said the judgments made in the courtroom were "not important" to him because they were "not Allah’s judgments," according to the New York Times.

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

Earlier, he had pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
through his lawyer to the latest indictment in the Oct. 31 truck attack near the World Trade Center.

Saipov’s Halloween day attack was the deadliest in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001.

A prosecutor said the Justice Department will decide by the end of the summer whether to seek the death penalty
against Saipov, who lived in Paterson, N.J., before the attack.

Defense lawyers have said the government should accept a guilty plea and a sentence of life in prison without parole to provide victims' families and the public with closure.

David Patton, a lawyer for Saipov, said he would need extra time to make legal challenges to the charges if death is sought.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will ultimately decide whether to seek the death penalty for Saipov by September, according to the Daily News.

Iraq says it killed 45 ISIS jihadists in Syria strike
[Rudaw] Iraq said Saturday it had killed 45 jihadists from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, including senior members, in an air strike in eastern Syria, the second such operation in less than a month.

Iraqi F-16 fighter jets carried out a "successful strike targeting a meeting of ISIS (ISIS) leaders" on Friday in the Hajin region, in the eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, a military statement said.

Among those killed, it said, were a senior member of the jihadists’ "ministry of war," his deputy, a local commander and a media official. There was no independent confirmation.

Three houses linked by an underground tunnel were also destroyed, it said, adding that the air strike was carried out based on "intelligence" and at the request of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Hajin, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Iraq’s border, is the largest populated hub still under ISIS control in Syria.

Last month the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that monitors the Syrian war said that at least 65 senior ISIS members live in Hajin.

The town has been surrounded since the end of last year by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, the monitor says.

Iraq’s air force has carried out several strikes on IS-held territory in Syria since April, including one targeting "the headquarters of IS terrorist gang leaders" in Hajin on May 24.

The following day Iraq released a video showing a strike on a huge building surrounded by palm trees and a wall which then collapsed.

IS declared a cross-border "caliphate" in Syria and Iraq in 2014, seizing a third of Iraq during a sweeping offensive.

The jihadists have since lost much ground to separate counter-offensives by Syrian and Iraqi forces as well as US-led operations, and the jihadist presence has been confined to a few holdouts in Deir ez-Zor.

In December the Iraqi government declared victory over ISIS but the military has continued regular operations targeting mostly desert areas along the porous Syrian border.
Al Ahram adds:
Those killed included high profile targets such as the group's "deputy war minister", one of its "media emirs", its leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
's personal courier and its chief of police, the military said in a statement.

UN rights chief calls for probe into ‘abuses by Venezuela forces’
[DAWN] The United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
chief called on Friday for an international investigation of atrocities in Venezuela, blasting the government’s chronic refusal to probe security officers over the alleged killings of civilians.

"The failure to hold security forces accountable for such serious human rights violations suggests that the rule of law is virtually absent in Venezuela," said Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, as his office launched a new report on the crisis-stricken country.

Zeid asked the UN Human Rights Council to set up its highest-level probe ‐ a Commission of Inquiry ‐ for Venezuela and said the International Criminal Court (ICC) might need to get further involved.

The Hague-based ICC in February opened a preliminary investigation into crimes allegedly committed by the security forces during a wave of protests against President Nicolas Maduro.

The UN rights office, which examined Maduro’s crackdown on protesters in a report last year, said its new findings related mostly to alleged abuses committed during purported anti-crime operations.

UN Sherlocks have been denied access to Venezuela. Some of the findings were based on remote monitoring as well as interviews with victims, witnesses, civil society groups and others.

Other evidence includes material compiled by former attorney general Luisa Ortega Diaz, who was sacked by Maduro last August and is living in exile.

The report highlights alleged extrajudicial killings by officers involved in the Operations for the Liberation of the People. It said those officers, supposedly tasked with fighting crime, might have been responsible for more than 500 killings between July 2015 and March 2017, largely carried out in poor neighbourhoods.

Rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told news hounds in Geneva that the victims were young men who "tended to fit the profile of suspected criminals", and were "incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
and killed without judicial warrants".

The operations were designed to show Maduro was tough on crime, Shamdasani said.

The report also highlighted the "pervasive" impunity for Maduro and for officers blamed for killing at least 46 people during protests last year.

According to the UN, Ortega Diaz had issued dozens of warrants against officers linked to the deaths, but only one trial has started. "This impunity must end," Zeid said in a statement.
