Rattled! Horror moment US pastor is bitten by a deadly snake during a service leaving him drenched in blood
[TheSun.co.uk] This is the horror moment a snake bit - and almost killed- a controversial American pastor who was performing a bizarre service with the reptile in Kentucky.

Drenched in his own blood, Cody Coots had to be carried out of the Full Gospel Tabernacle church, one of the few in the country which still allows snake-handling.

Cody's father Jamie, 42, was killed when a rattlesnake bit him in a similar ritual back in 2014 but that does not put him off performing the same death-defying service.

After he was bitten and collapsed on the ground, Cody asked to be taken to the mountaintop where God would judge whether he should live or die.

But his friend, also named Cody, instead drove him to the hospital where a doctor said the snake came close to severing his temporal artery which would have killed him.

Cody's friend said: "Most people bit in the face are dead in five, ten minutes. I mean, his own daddy got bit in the hand and within seven minutes was dead."

His church's unique way of proving their religious devotion is inspired by the biblical verse in Mark 16:18: "They will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them."

Cody was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Centre by helicopter after being bitten in the face by a snake.
There are something like 19 Bible verses that speak to testing God such as:
Matthew 4:7
Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Maybe Cody had ADHD and skipped those parts of the good book. Best to find a vocation where reading isn't not a requirement.

I trot this out regularly. Just because something is in the Bible is no reason to carry it out literally. Some thought / reflection is helpful.
There is one part of the Bible that has proven absolutely true and for all time: Luke 2:1 (KJV)
"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed."

#7  WAAAAY back in my inquisitive youth a tent revival came to our small town. They were snake handlers. Several of us wanted to look at the snakes before the service so we sneaked behind the tent and found the cooler the snakes were in. Yes, they were on ice and very docile. One of the yoots who will forever remain nameless went home and got some terpentine which he then poured on the snakes. When the cooler was opened during the service the "pastor" reached in and grabbed a snake which, being very cranky by then, bit him.He didn't die but they left town very quickly.

#12  The internet is full of answers:

Q: What Is a Group of Snakes Called?
A:
QUICK ANSWER
A group of snakes can be referred to as a den, bed, pit, or nest. The exception to this is a group of rattlesnakes, which is called a rhumba. CONTINUE

FULL ANSWER
Snakes are rarely found in groups. At times during the winter, snakes may congregate to brumate. This type of behavior is also common in bats and marmots.Groups of snakes will huddle together in a den or under rocks to ride out the winter months, conserving their energy until food becomes more abundant in the spring. Unlike hibernating, brumating animals remain awake but lay still to conserve energy.
All snakes are carnivores and swallow their prey whole. Generally, snakes eat alone and will not hunt for food together. Nearly every place in the world has snakes with the exception of Antarctica, Ireland and New Zealand.

#14  The snake pastor story I was told by some old folks who knew about 1969. The story happened about 1908. The location - rural near Alma Nebraska.

A German speaking congregation was having a hard time finding a Lutheran pastor. They finally found one in Ky and he moved out with his family. People liked him and the church was prospering. Spring came around and it was time to give the church the old top to bottom cleaning. Some ladies bumped against the altar and heard rattles so ran to get their men folk. The peeked in and saw a pile of snakes in a basket. ... OHHH... The pastor was drug in and he admitted that Yes, he did like to do services with snakes sometimes and yes they had been in the church for months. Then his wife and kids were brought in. They had never heard of such a thing and were horrified as much as the good German Lutherans. Well, it was done in the revolution so it must be okay... They tared and feathered him and then tied him to the cow catcher of the next train leaving town. They avowed how they liked his wife and kids and they needed some charity now so they gave her the parsonage and 80 acres. The church was happy, the wife was happy, the kids were happy and nobody ever bothered to find out what happened to the pastor.

Government
KEK Wars, Part 2
[Ecosophia] In last week's thrilling episode of The Kek Wars, we talked about the way that America's managerial aristocracy and its broad penumbra of lackeys and hangers-on retreated into a self-referential bubble to avoid noticing the consequences of their preferred policies. As they did so, those policies‐the metastatic growth of government regulation that strangled small businesses and transferred power and wealth to huge corporations and federal bureaucracies, the trade policies that forced working class wages and benefits down below subsistence levels, and the tacit policy of encouraging unlimited illegal immigration that created a vast labor pool of noncitizens who had no rights and thus could be exploited with impunity‐drove tens of millions of Americans into destitution and misery. Now it's time to start exploring how the blowback to those policies took shape.
It looks long, like yesterday's Part 1, but I'm gonna read it all.
Part of that blowback came from within the working classes that took the brunt of the policies just named, and part of it came from other sectors of society that were shut out of the benefits of the bipartisan policy consensus and forced to carry a disproportionate share of the costs. Another element of it, though, unfolded from a policy that elites always embrace sooner or later: the habit of making sure that the educational system produces more people trained for managerial tasks than existing institutions can absorb.
See, I told you it'd be interesting. RTWT.

DOJ's Bruce Ohr wrote Christopher Steele was 'very concerned about Comey's firing -- afraid they will be exposed' (video)
[FOX] A collection of Justice Department official Bruce Ohr's emails, texts and handwritten notes, reviewed by Fox News, reveals that he was deeply connected to the unverified Steele dossier as well as its author and, during the presidential election campaign, the alleged government surveillance abuses involving a Trump campaign official.

The dossier, which was used by federal officials to justify the surveillance of a top Trump aide, Carter Page, was created by Fusion GPS and paid for by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Ohr wrote that Christopher Steele, the ex-British spy who wrote the salacious dossier, was "very concerned (abt) about [former FBI Director James] Comey's firing -- afraid they will be exposed."

The Ohr documents shed more light on Steele's activities before the presidential election. While Steele shopped the dossier to multiple media outlets, he also appeared to ask Ohr for help with a Russian oligarch -- Oleg Deripaska -- after rumors the U.S. might impose sanctions.

Ohr had a conflict of interest during the presidential campaign and transition, congressional investigators say, because his wife Nellie worked for Fusion GPS. Steele, an ex-British spy, was a key source cited by the FBI and Department of Justice to obtain a FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) warrant to monitor Page.

FBI INCORRECTLY TOLD FISA COURT FOUR TIMES THAT STEELE WASN'T SOURCE OF REPORT USED TO JUSTIFY CARTER PAGE SURVEILLANCE

After the FBI dropped Steele as a source in November 2016 over his contacts with the media, the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee found that Steele had maintained contact with government officials by effectively using Ohr as a back channel.

During recent congressional testimony, now-fired FBI agent Peter Strzok confirmed that "the FBI received documents and material from Mr. Ohr."

How Bruce Ohr Could Implicate High-Ranking Obama Officials In Spygate
BLUF:
[TheFederalist] Once again, Ohr and Steele’s exchanges detailed by Solomon provide a hint: The day after Yate’s firing, Steele contacted Ohr, texting "doubtless a sad and crazy day for you re-SY," a clear reference to Sally Yates. "Just wanted to check you are OK, still in situ and able to help locally as discussed, along with your Bureau colleagues," Steele added. Then, after Ohr confirmed "I’m still here and able to help as discussed," Steele stressed that if Ohr was out at DOJ, he needed another "(Bureau?)" contact.

This exchange suggests Yates’ removal concerned Steele and left him worried that without Yates at the helm, Ohr’s continued role as a DOJ liaison for Steele was at risk, and that without Yates or Ohr, he would need to work directly with the FBI.

Was that because Yates approved of Ohr acting as a dossier courier for Steele and the FBI? If so, the Spygate scandal reaches into even higher echelons of the Deep State than previously known. Ohr has a pretty good incentive to come clean and expose anyone else at the DOJ (or in the Obama administration) involved in the decision to continue to use Steele as a source. Otherwise Ohr will hold sole responsibility for going rogue.
Emphasis added.

Ex-intel leaders admonish Pres. Trump in joint letter
[Washington Examiner] Twelve former senior intelligence officials have issued a joint statement admonishing President Trump for yanking former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance, calling it "ill-considered and unprecedented."

The ex-officials say "the president's action regarding John Brennan and the threats of similar action against other former officials has nothing to do with who should and should not hold security clearances ‐ and everything to do with an attempt to stifle free speech."

The signees include six former CIA directors, five former deputy directors and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Two of the signees ‐ Clapper and former CIA Director Michael Hayden ‐ have appeared on a White House list of people who may also have their security clearances revoked.

Brennan saying Trump colluded with Russia may be an 'intelligence breach,' top Republican says
BLUF:
[Washington Examiner] "Director Brennan's recent statements purport to know as fact that the Trump campaign colluded with a foreign power," Burr said in a statement Thursday afternoon. "If Director Brennan's statement is based on intelligence he received while still leading the CIA, why didn't he include it in the Intelligence Community Assessment released in 2017? If his statement is based on intelligence he has seen since leaving office, it constitutes an intelligence breach."

Burr was referring to the January 2017 intelligence community assessment which determined Russia was behind an effort to interfere in the 2016 election which got Trump elected to White House. The North Carolina Republican went on to say Brennan using the media as an outlet to lash out at Trump may not have been a wise choice.

"If he has some other personal knowledge of or evidence of collusion it should be disclosed to the Special Counsel, not the New York Times," Burr continued, alluding to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the federal Russia investigation. "If, however, Director Brennan's statement is purely political and based on conjecture, the president has full authority to revoke his security clearance as head of the Executive Branch."

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced the move to revoke Brennan's security clearance on Wednesday and read a statement from Trump, citing the "risks posed by his erratic conduct and behavior" as the impetus for the move.

The Grand Turk
Europe watches as Turkey burns
h/t Gates of Vienna
[Politico] Looks like Allah is betting on the dollar.

Nearly a week has passed since a livid Recep Tayyip Erdogan thundered "they have dollars, we have God" in Washington’s direction.

So far, the Almighty isn’t helping. And while European officials say they would like to help (the last thing the EU needs at the moment is a destabilized Turkey) there’s little they can do but sit and watch.

For one thing, there’s no political will to get involved. Erdogan’s aggressive posture toward Turkey’s European neighbors in recent years, in particular Germany, has sapped his political capital on the Continent.

While some in Europe fear Turkey’s crisis could endanger the EU’s refugee deal with Ankara, that’s unlikely. The reason: Erdogan needs hard currency now more than ever.
And the "refugee" deals don't work anyways.
Even the exposure of several large European banks to Turkey is unlikely to change Europe’s political calculus. Despite investor angst over the liabilities, which total about €150 billion, the exposure is a fraction of the sector’s overall loan book. That’s why JPMorgan describes the Turkey risk for Europe’s banks as "significant but manageable."

Europe’s trade exposure to Turkey is also limited. The country accounts for just 1.6 percent of German exports, for example.

Turkey’s crisis, the result of years of loose fiscal and monetary policies, is almost entirely of Erdogan’s own making. And a big part of what makes the situation so dangerous for Turkey is that Erdogan is the only one with the power to fix things.

He is unlikely to do so in the near term.

Kimberley Strassel: 'What was Bruce Ohr Doing'
[WSJ] Justice releases some damning documents, but much of the truth is still classified.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department have continued to insist they did nothing wrong in their Trump-Russia investigation. This week should finally bring an end to that claim, given the clear evidence of malfeasance via the use of Bruce Ohr.

Mr. Ohr was until last year associate deputy attorney general. He began feeding information to the FBI from dossier author Christopher Steele in late 2016‐after the FBI had terminated Mr. Steele as a confidential informant for violating the bureau’s rules. He also collected dirt from Glenn Simpson, cofounder of Fusion GPS, the opposition-research firm that worked for Hillary Clinton’s campaign and employed Mr. Steele. Altogether, the FBI pumped Mr. Ohr for information at least a dozen times, debriefs that remain in classified 302 forms.

American Couple Dies Tragically While Biking Through ISIS Territory Trying to Prove Evil Does Not Exist
[Daily Caller] An American couple decided to bicycle around the world in an attempt to prove evil does not exist. They chose to bicycle through ISIS territory and ISIS killed them.

Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan left their D.C. government jobs nearly two years ago to embark on a worldwide bike tour. The wide-eyed, optimistic couple kept track of their trips on a website where they posted stunning photos of their travels and whimsical musings on evil, the media and the goodness of people.

In one post, Austin ‐ who is a vegan ‐ said he worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development during Obama’s presidency explained how he and his girlfriend were planning to bike around the world with hopes to meet "generous" and approachable people.

He did acknowledge that biking makes one more "vulnerable."

But to the point others have made. There are a lot of people out there who will kill you because you are an American. The press sugar coated their murders and they died in vain. Nope, not gonna happen. Some people die through happenstance and those are usually tragic, some die through the foreseeable results of their own ignorance. These aren't usually tragic but can be ironic or even schadenfreudolicious.

I don't have any compassion left for people that refuse to consider cause and effect. Choices have consequences and bad choices ( he chose poorly) can have bad consequences.

#16  Had the media reported that their killers reasoning for murdering the couple was that they were not muslim and American nationals maybe the snowflakes would learn something.

The news has been out for well over 200 years:
"The (Tripolitanian and thus Muslim) Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet,1 that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise."

The murdered people were educated. They weren't ignorant they suffered from cognitive dissonance which made them deny obvious danger.

The same goes for the snowflakes who are still among us.

Mediation efforts in Gaza and Yemen conflicts: A Dual focus for Egypt
[AlAhram] As the Eid holiday approaches Cairo is working to manage parallel conflicts in Gazoo and Yemen.

Egypt remains adamant in its refusal of the repeated Israeli suggestion Cairo take administrative control of Gazoo.
In recent days Cairo has been playing host to representatives of leading Paleostinian factions with the aim of managing chronic Paleostinian divisions and building a solid base for a sustainable truce between Israel and Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,.

Informed Hamas sources say some advances have already been made in bridging the gap between Hamas in Gazoo and the Ramallah-based Paleostinian Authority (PA). Egyptian and PA sources, however, are less forthcoming over the possibility of Egypt securing a deal between Hamas and the PA.

Ghazni Siege Cost Private Sector $50 Million
[ToloNews] Ghazni’s private sector sustained an estimated $50 million in losses during the four-day siege of Ghazni over the weekend, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said following a preliminary investigation.

Their probe found that markets have burned down, along with some buildings and shops as well as all the goods inside.

The festivities in Ghazni started in the early hours of Friday morning and ended on Tuesday ‐ although festivities are still ongoing on the outskirts of the city.

One analyst said the city was a small trading hub which has been reduced to a heap of rubble.

The trade centers and markets are in PD2, in the center of the city, where many government buildings are located. The area was on the first line of battle and bore the brunt of the festivities.

"The war was carried out in a trading area," the ACCI deputy head Khan Jan Alokozai said. "More than five big markets around the PD2 Police Headquarters have burnt down."

Ghazni Provincial Council estimates the damages were however much higher and has called for government to assign a team to assess the financial losses sustained.

"The damages of war in Ghazni are much higher (than $50 million). A probe team should be assigned to the province. The losses are over $100 million," said Hamidullah Nawroz, a member of Ghazni Provincial Council.

Ghani shares borders with eight other provinces and most goods destined for these provinces transit through Ghazni.

Lawmakers from Ghazni also said they have asked government to send a team to assess the situation.

"We call on government to send a delegation to Ghazni province in order to assess the damages and compensate the people. Government is requested to allocate a budget for reconstruction of the damages in the province," said Shah Gul Rezaee, an MP from Ghazni.

ACCI officials said the damage inflicted on Ghazni City in just four days has had a serious impact on the city, and that it will take a long time for the city to be restored to its former state.

Attack On NDS Training Center Ends After 6-Hour Battle
[ToloNews] Kabul police chief's front man Hashmat Stanekzai said on Thursday that shortly after 10am button men stormed a building close to a National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) military training center in Qala-e-Wazir in PD5 in Kabul city.

Just after 4pm, Minister of Interior Wais Barmak confirmed the attack had ended.

He said three bandidos bully boys had been involved - all of whom were killed.

Police said earlier three people had been maimed in the 6-hour clash.

Gunmen reportedly entrenched themselves in a building that was under construction and used this as a vantage point.

Security forces however immediately cordoned off the area after the attack was launched and evacuated residents in the immediate area.

At least two kabooms were heard, which residents said had been rockets.

This was yet another attack on a military facility this week.

On Wednesday, a police source in Baghlan said that at least 35 Afghan National Army (ANA) officers and ten coppers were killed when the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
launched an attack on a military base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district on Tuesday night.

The head of Zabul provincial council also confirmed that the Taliban launched an attack on an army check post in Qalat city on Tuesday night. He said over 400 Taliban fighters took part.

Police forces were also targeted in Kandahar this week, in Arghandab district.

These incidents came close on the heels of the Faryab incident on Monday which saw Afghan troops surrender to the Taliban after their base - Chenayeeha - in Gormach district, fell to the bully boys.

The base had reportedly been under Taliban siege for 48 hours.

According to local officials, over 40 security force members surrendered after they received no help nor ammunition supplies despite repeated requests.

In this weekend's crisis in Ghazni, Taliban fighters also targeted a military facility, this time the city's police headquarters - which appears to have been compromised as reports indicate bandidos bully boys seized military equipment during their raid.

Several terrorists killed in Iraqi air raids on Daesh positions in Syria
[PRESSTV] The Iraqi Air Force has attacked the "operations room" of ISIS in neighboring Syria, killing several turbans plotting to carry out a terrorist operation in Iraq in coming days, the Iraqi Interior Ministry has announced.

According to the Interior Ministry’s Security Media Center, the air raids completely destroyed a ISIS task force working on a plan to launch a terrorist attack inside the Iraqi territory and target civilians using boom jackets within the next few days.

Several bad boyz were potted in the "successful" Arclight airstrikes carried out by the Iraqi F-16 fighter jets on Thursday, the ministry’s statement said.

The airstrikes came a month after the Iraqi artillery fire killed a ISIS ringleader and several other turbans in an attack against the Takfiri

[IsraelTimes] Arabic daily al-Hayat says Major General Abbas Kamel will meet with Paleostinian leader the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

in the West Bank on Thursday

The head of Egyptian intelligence, Major General Abbas Kamel, came to Tel Aviv on Wednesday to discuss the final details of a reported truce agreement aimed at calming weeks of border festivities and violent exchanges between Israel and Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, in the Gazoo Strip.

Kamel’s visit was first reported by the London-based Arabic newspaper al-Hayat, and later confirmed by an Israeli government official, who said the Egyptian intelligence chief met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Nadav Argaman, the head of the Shin Bet security agency.

Kamel was in Israel as a guest of National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, the official said.

Al Hayat also reported that Kamel was scheduled to meet Thursday with Paleostinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, citing Paleostinian sources.

In addition to halting the recent fighting, the Egypt-brokered plan includes humanitarian projects for Gazoo, and future indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas for the exchange of prisoners, the newspaper reported.

Hamas last week said it reached a ceasefire with Israel brokered by Egypt and the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
to end the flareup in violence, though this was denied by Israel. The agreement will reportedly see Hamas halt attacks in exchange for the opening of border terminals and an expanded fishing zone.

, media channels reported.

"Syrian army forces have resumed progress, cordoning off Telul al-Safa region, which is the last bastion of Islamic State at the borders between the countryside of As-Suwaida and Rif Damascus," the Russian Sputnik news agency said on Thursday.

"Ongoing shelling was carried out against the bad boy group’s besieged locations. The Syrian army jets carried out, over the past few hours, targeting the bad boys, which left tens of them killed and weapons destroyed, including a truck loaded with ammunition. The faceless myrmidons on board were killed," the report added.

On Sunday, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Syrian army achieved an advance against the bad boy group as they managed to besiege them in Telul al-Safa area, near the eastern borders of Rif Dimashq.

Islamic State carried out an attack last month against As Suwaida, leaving more than 250 victims.

After Abadi’s remarks, Washington: will penalize whoever violates sanctions Iran
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Washington has threatened to impose sanctions on Iraq, in case it did not stick to U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday.

In remarks that followed statements made by outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi over trade with Iran, Heather Nauret, the department spokesperson, said "You know our concerns about Iran and about trading with Iran, and we will continue to hold countries accountable for any violation of sanctions."

On Monday, Abadi said the Iraqi government will stop trading with Iran in the US dollar, but it will not abide by the US sanctions against Tehran.

U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
imposed sanctions on Iran after its withdrawal from the nuclear deal made in 2015.

The sanctions target Iran’s purchases of transportation vehicles, trade as well as gold and other main metals.

Each of Iran and Iraq have developed close ties since 2003 when Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was toppled by a U.S.-led invasion.

Iran’s economy has come under intense strain since Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal that Tehran signed with six world powers and reimposed sanctions that had been eased under the terms of the accord.

Massive blast rocks Idlib after HTS ammo depot explodes
[ALMASDARNEWS] A massive blast rocked Idlib city last night after an ammo depot belonging to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
went kaboom!.

According to pro-opposition activists, the blast took place at a Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham ammo depot that was located near the governor’s mansion in Idlib’s city-center.

The total number of casualties as a result of this kaboom is still unknown; however, some activists claimed that many Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham members were killed.

Furthermore, the reason for the blast at the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham ammo depot is still unknown.

No further details were released at this time.

This latest kaboom in Idlib comes just a week after 59 people were killed inside the provincial town of Sarmada near the Ottoman Turkish border.

Russia-trained troops head to Idlib for upcoming offensive

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Army’s 5th Corps was spotted en route to Idlib to beef up the Syrian forces preparing for the long-awaited battle against jihadi groups in northwestern Syria.

Convoys for the Russia-trained military formation left Daraa to the country’s north after the entire southern province had become under the Syrian Army’s control.

The Syrian military announced the formation of the 5th Assault Corps in November 2016 as an elite force consisting solely of volunteers and backed up by Russia.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio wondered: Where the hell was Chumbaloni? And where was his $600?...
jihadists’ positions and headquarters across Idlib and northern Hama are being targeted ‐ around the clock ‐ by heavy artillery and missile strikes, as well as aerial bombardment.

Scores of Daraa rebels who had reconciled with the Syrian government are reportedly part of the fresh reinforcements heading to fight Qaeda-linked groups in Idlib.

Jihadist rebels arrest 12 people for allegedly seeking reconciliation in Idlib

[ALMASDARNEWS] jihadist rebels in Idlib continued their campaign to arrest people wanting reconciliation with the government inside the province.

On Wednesday, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
reportedly placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
at least a dozen people inside the southern Idlib villages of Ma’arat Hurmah and al-Naqeer.

The 12 people were charged by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham of trying to plan a reconciliation agreement with the government inside both of the Idlib Governorate towns.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham said that these apprehended people are under investigation currently; if they are found to be in contact with the government, they will face death for treason.

These latest arrests come just a week after Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham launched a large-scale security operation to identify and apprehend anyone suspected of seeking reconciliation with the government.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham said the purpose of this operation to avoid a potential Dara’a scenario, where many locals worked with the government to establish a reconciliation agreement.

The jihadist faction is viewed as a terrorist group in Syria and the government has worked at great lengths to get people to disassociate from them and reconcile with the state.

Iraq
Kirkuk: Kurds removed from 47 posts since October 16
[Rudaw] Kurdish officials have been removed from 47 posts in the Kirkuk administration since the events of October 16.

The Iraqi government has removed Kurdish officials from local government and security positions in the disputed areas, replacing them with Arabs and Turkmen.

Most government positions in Kirkuk had been occupied by Kurds.

On October 16, 2017, the Iraqi army and Hashd al-Shaabi forces returned to Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
Jalawla, Khanaqin, Makhmur, and Shingal, which are defined as disputed areas in the Iraqi constitution. Kurds consider them Kurdistani areas outside the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s remit.

The Iraqi government began removing Kurdish officials soon after the takeover. The first position to change hands was Kirkuk governor. Up to 50 Kurdish officials have since been removed from their posts.

The withdrawal of Peshmerga forces from the disputed areas has created security gaps, which are being exploited by ISIS remnants.

"People now want the Peshmerga to return. They consider the Peshmerga more important than positions of power," said Samir Mohammed, head of the Khanaqin town council.

"People have forgotten about posts previously occupied by Kurds because they are having a bitter life due to the absence of the Peshmerga," he added.

Following the events of October 16, councilors of towns of Qaratapa, Jalawla, and Mandali were removed. The Iraqi government was gentler on Kurdish officials in Khanaqin ‐ possibly because they are mostly Shiites.

Meanwhile in Makhmour, Rizgar Ismael, the town’s mayor, has flatly denied any Kurdish officials had been removed.

Shingal, Sinune, and Giruzer have all seen new appointments. Hashd al-Shaabi, a majority Shiite paramilitia, appointed three officials to run government affairs in these towns. The djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
governor and provincial council, however, continue to deal with the removed officials ‐ not the Hashd appointees.

Mahma Khalil, mayor of Shingal, said he is the legitimate official in his town and that Nineveh provincial council and the governor deal with him.

The three Hashd appointees are Yazidi Kurds associated with Hashd.

"We do our work daily. Last month, 33 provincial council members called on the governor to make a decision so that we return to our places," Khalil added.

A secret interior ministry order ‐ number 17240 ‐ was allegedly issued on February 18, 2018 commanding authorities reappoint positions in Kirkuk.

The order bears the signature of Dr Aqil Mahmud Khaz Ali, the Iraqi deputy interior minister. The order led to the removal of some Kurdish officials from their positions.

Brigadier General Khatab Omar, director of police in Kirkuk province, and Colonel Afrasyaw Kamil, police spokesperson, were allowed to remain in their positions.

"Nowadays, Baath party laws have returned to Kirkuk," Ahmad Askari, member of Kirkuk provincial council, told Rudaw.

"Neither the constitution nor the law has value in Kirkuk. They can do anything they want. They refill these positions with Arabs and Turkmen because they see that the KDP and PUK officials are not returning to the city. But they also remove Kurds who are still there in their positions," he added.

Askari said it is not only KDP officials who do not want to return to their positions in Kirkuk.

"There are even PUK officials who have not returned. Kirkuk’s health director is PUK and he has not returned. That is why an Arab national has been put in his place," he said.

Amir Khwakaram, mayor of Daquq, who has also been removed from his position, said he was removed for raising the Kurdish flag and participating in the Kurdish independence referendum.

In Saladin province too, Hashd al-Shaabi removed the Kurdish mayor of Tuz Khurmatu and replaced him with a Turkmen.

"In the absence of Peshmerga forces there, we can do nothing, and no one would listen to us," the removed mayor of Daquq said.

The confirmation was made by the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), a spokesperson for The University of New Mexico's Health Science's Center said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers go to Wahhaj's family. We certainly understand the heartbreak this news will cause and want to stress our commitment to investigating this death to serve the living," the office wrote in a statement.

The cause or manner of death remained unclear, according to the office, which added that "Sherlocks had to use several means" in order to identify the boy's remains due to their condition.

"I started searching of my sister, I went to different hospitals both government and private, finally I found my sister in a hospital, where post mortem examinations take place. I found her among the unidentified bodies."

He said he "prayed" that no one else would experience what he had.

UK police given more time to quiz Parliament crash suspect
[ABCNEWS.GO] British police have been given more time to question the suspect in a car crash outside Parliament that injured three people.

Tuesday after striking cyclists, then plowing his car into a security barrier.

He is being held on suspicion of terrorism and attempted murder, but has not been charged. A magistrate has given police until Monday to charge him, release him or seek another extension.

Police have searched properties in England's Midlands as they seek the motivation of the 29-year-old from Birmingham, 100 miles (160 kms) northwest of London.

Police in that city said Thursday that they have deployed patrols to two mosques whose windows were smashed with ball bearings from a catapult. Police say the motive is unclear.

Cavusoglu also called on the US to "take into account our frustrations" with American policies.

His conciliatory remarks came as Washington said that tariffs on Ottoman Turkish steel and aluminium were unrelated to the case of Andrew Brunson, a Christian evangelical pastor held in Turkey on terrorism charges, and would remain even if he were to be released.

"The tariffs that are in place still would not be removed with the release of Pastor Brunson," White House press secretary Sara Huckabee Sanders said.

"The tariffs are specific to national security," she said, without specifying the nature of the national security concerns.

Israel to build 20,000 new settler units in occupied Quds
[PRESSTV] The Israeli authorities have approved plans to construct 20,000 new settler units in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds, once again defying international calls for the regime to stop its settlement activities in Paleostinian lands.

Jerusalem al-Quds municipality announced Wednesday that it had agreed to building more than 20,000 new settler units along with industrial areas and hotels in the occupied Paleostinian city, Israeli media said.

Under the plan, around 12,600 new living units and an additional 8,000 units will be built as part of "urban renewal initiative" in existing structures.

The project is expected to cost some 1.4 billion Israeli shekels (roughly $379 million).

World War II-era submarine flooded by vandals in New Jersey (video)
[FOX] A group of New Jersey vandals this weekend did what the Nazis couldn't ‐ sink the USS Ling. At least partially.

The intruders boarded the World War II-era vessel, which is berthed in a New Jersey river, and opened underwater hatches, flooding the sub. The thieves also stole several plaques.

Navy veteran Jack Brown, a trustee on the Submarine Memorial Association, which is responsible for maintaining the USS Ling, told FOX5 he was at the New Jersey Naval Museum in Hackensack on Sunday when he noticed something was off.

"I noticed the boat looked very low in the water," Brown said. "[Vandals] cut through with bolt cutters, I guess, got in and opened all the hatches. The equipment and artifacts inside are ruined."

The Ling, a Balao class-submarine, was commissioned on June 8, 1945 and was the last of the fleet boats that patrolled U.S. shores during World War II, according to the Historic Naval Ships Association.

Stay tuned...

List of white farmers facing expropriation 'exposed'
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] South African president Cyril Ramaphosa recently unveiled plans to allow white people's land to be taken without compensation.

Now a lobby group claims to obtained a list of 195 farms "identified for this purpose", reigniting the controversy over the proposals.

The AfriForum group said the document was being circulated by ministers as the government prepares to implement the policy.

But the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform denied the list was real.

A spokeswoman for the department told News24: "We don't know where they got it from. There is no truth to this document."

In response, AfriForum's deputy CEO Ernst Roets accused the government of lacking transparency.

He said: "The problem is this strategy of secrecy. The department has to prove they are acting in good faith."

He insisted the list was "definitely being circulated" and said he received it from a "confidential source".

The issue of land ownership remains a highly emotive subject in South Africa more than two decades after the end of apartheid.

According to the government, 72 percent of private land is owned by white people, with just four per cent owned by black people.

Other racial groups account for the other 24 percent of land.

Earlier this month, AfriForum's Ian Cameron warned the plans to seize land could spark "anarchy".

who sought asylum in Germany has moved back to Iraq after being confronted by her former ISIS captor, who had registered as a refugee in Stuttgart.

Ashwaq Ta’lo said that she was stopped by Abu Humam ‐ a Syrian ISIS guard who had purchased her for $100 ‐ while walking home in Stuttgart.

"I froze when I looked at his face carefully," she told Bas News, a Kurdish agency. "It was Abu Humam, with the same scary beard and ugly face."

She said that during her unexpected encounter with her former captor, Humam told her: "I am Abu Humam and you were with me for a while in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
. And I know where you live, with whom you live, and what you are doing."

Ashwaq immediately told her brother about the incident and reported Humam to the German police, who were able to identify the man from CCTV footage. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
German authorities said they had no grounds for arrest, as Humam was also a registered refugee.

The Yazidi teen decided to leave Germany, believing that she would be safer in Kurdistan, where her father lives. "I will never go back," she said.

Louisiana Attorney General Denies $600 Million to Citibank, Bank of America Over Gun Control
The problem with politicizing business is that one can’t guarantee the actual politicians will agree.
[Breitbart] Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and the state’s Bond Commission denied $600 million to Citibank and Bank of America over the gun control stance adopted by both companies.

Citibank and Bank of America were both to be part of a road financing plan in the state, but were omitted from the financial plan after arbitrarily placing new gun controls on banking customers.

Louisiana Executive Division press secretary Ruth Wisher told Breitbart News that Landry and State Treasurer John Schroder have been working on the state’s response to corporate gun control "for some time." Omitting them from the $600 million is part of that response.

On March 23, 2018, Breitbart News reported Citibank’s new gun control regulations, which require gun store customers to quit selling "high capacity" magazines in order to do business with the bank. Citibank also demanded bank store customers refuse long gun sales to anyone 18-20 years old, even though long gun sales to 18-20-year-olds are legal (and 18-20-year-olds can use fully automatic weapons in the U.S. military).

On April 13, 2018, Reuters reported that Bank of America was reworking their policy so as to end with customers "who make military-style firearms for civilians" Bank of America does not differentiate between the fact that military rifles are fully automatic, whereas civilian firearms are only semiautomatic.

In other words, a military weapon will shoot an entire magazine of ammunition with one pull of the trigger but an AR-15 will only shoot one round per trigger pull, just like a double-action revolver.
I cancelled my BoA Credit Card over their position. Unfortunately, Costco is tied into Citibank. Gonna' have to explore other options...

Keith Ellison Fights Back Tears During Interview About Abuse Allegations
[THEDAILYBEAST] Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) got emotional this week during an interview with local television discussing an abuse allegation leveled against him by his ex-girlfriend.

In the chat with WCCO-TV, Ellison, who won a primary on Tuesday night in the Minnesota attorney general race, once again denied Karen Monahan’s claim that he physically abused her during their relationship, which ended in 2016.

"I know I can’t just run past this controversy and not address it, which is why I’m here with you today," he said, emphasizing his declared desire to try and clear the air.

Asked directly if he ever abused Monahan in any way, Ellison flatly said: "No."

Neither physically nor emotionally? Ellison, again, said: "No."

He was also asked about the most egregious accusation, which first surfaced in a Facebook post by Monahan’s son: That a video exists of the congressman dragging Monahan off a bed by her feet.

"There couldn’t be. There couldn’t be such a thing as that," Ellison said when asked if such a video exists.

Bruce Ohr May Have Broken More Than The Law By Pushing His Wife's Opposition Research To The FBI
A review of publicly available information causes a reasonable person to wonder whether Bruce Ohr broke the law by promoting his wife’s anti-Trump research to the FBI when he was working at the Justice Department.

The law prohibits public officials from involvement in matters in which their spouse has a financial interest. The question is, Did Ohr "personally and substantially" participate in a particular matter in which his spouse had a "financial interest" while he was employed by the Justice Department as the assistant attorney general? Let’s take a closer look.

Recall that the Hillary Clinton campaign (through its law firm Perkins Coie) hired opposition research firm Fusion GPS to generate dirt on Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential campaign. Fusion GPS in turn hired former British spy Christopher Steele, who compiled the Trump dossier containing as yet unproven allegations of Russian dirt on Trump.

We learned in December that Ohr met with Fusion GPS in November 2016 ‐ a critical time frame ‐ while he was the associate deputy attorney general. Former FBI agent Peter Strzok has confirmed Ohr fed the FBI documents pertinent to the investigation into Trump’s Russia ties, and The Hill reported the FBI used Ohr to continue collecting information from Steele, even after it terminated him as a source for leaking word of the investigation to the media.

John Solomon filled in the contours of Ohr’s role in the investigation, writing in The Hill of recently disclosed emails:

They also confirm that Ohr later became a critical conduit of continuing information from Steele after the FBI ended the Brit’s role as an informant. ...
"Critical conduit?" How about 'cut-out?' In espionage parlance, a 'cut-out' is a mutually trusted intermediary, method or channel of communication that facilitates the exchange of information between agents.
The FBI specifically instructed Steele that he could no longer ’operate to obtain any intelligence whatsoever on behalf of the FBI,’ those memos show.
Translation: We can no longer conduct personal meets (PM's). Another venue will be developed. You will be notified.
Yet, Steele asked Ohr in the Jan. 31 text exchange if he could continue to help feed information to the FBI: ’Just want to check you are OK, still in the situ and able to help locally as discussed, along with your Bureau colleagues.’

’I’m still here and able to help as discussed,’ Ohr texted back. ’I’ll let you know if that changes.’
Translation: We still have funding for your project.

Tanzania to arrest entire village over broken water pipe
[PRESSTV] Tanzanian police said Thursday it planned to arrest all the residents of a village in the country's south after water pipes were destroyed by a mob.

The inhabitants of Ngolo village were accused of deliberately smashing pipes taking water to a neighboring settlement in Mbeya region.

Governor Albert Chalamila had on Wednesday, "ordered that all the inhabitants of this village be enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
regardless of their condition."

In response, police on Thursday deployed several vehicles and officers to arrest the villagers, said regional commander Ulrich Matei.

"They committed economic sabotage. The government has disbursed money, installed water pipes and they destroyed them! We cannot accept that," Matie said.

The police chief added that he had sent "enough vehicles, with enough fuel and police on board" to arrest the villagers.

Details about the incident remain sketchy, but the village, whose population is around 1,600, lies in an area where water resources are sketchy.

VDH: The Deflation of the Academic Brand
A taste:
[NationalReview] No doubt Ocasio-Cortez, at 28, is still young and inexperienced. But when she refers to her own supposedly stellar academic record, and then in a series of statements illustrates how poorly educated she is, one wonders, What exactly is the value of $300,000 Boston University degree?

We could ask the same about Sarah Jeong’s UC Berkeley B.A. and Harvard Law degrees. Years of Jeong’s racist tweets surfaced, creating a firestorm, shortly after the New York Times hired her as a writer and member of the editorial board. Responding to critics, the Times noted that it had reviewed Jeong’s social-media history before hiring her.

It is growing harder and harder to equate elite university branding with proof of knowledge. Barack Obama, another Harvard Law graduate, proved this depressing fact a number of times when he asserted that the Maldives were the Falklands, "corpsmen" was pronounced with a hard p, Austrians spoke a language called Austrian, there were 57 states, and Hawaii was in Asia.

Joe Biden, another law-school graduate, once stated that George W. Bush should have addressed the nation on television the way FDR did after the stock crash: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television . . ." Biden apparently forgot that FDR was not president in 1929 and that TVs weren’t introduced to the public until 1939.

The Trump revolution is often attributed to the angry pushback of the deplorables and irredeemables and all those who lacked the knack for getting with the global agenda. Perhaps. But it was also a popular consensus that our experts in government, the university, and the media were not very expert, and the résumé and letters behind their names increasingly denoted nothing much at all.

#1  They got corrupted by (as usual) a huge flow of money out of Washington the Swamp. They jump to repeat Eisenhower's warning about the Military-Industrial complex but bury (as with most contemporary journalism that don't fit the narrative) his warning about academia -

Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.

In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite.

They sold their integrity much like Detroit sold its in the automotive world. Volume over quality. The bottom line. '73 embargo introduced Americans to Japanese cars that were solidly built, less expensive, fuel efficient, and not nickled and dimed to death on the invoice. Detroit never recovered.

Most state universities stated as A&Ms, agricultural and mechanical, practical need of the 19th Century. They've been corrupted through an indentured student population to cover everything and specifically so much that has no practical application outside of academia itself.

Trump has Red China reeling
[Don Surber] Omarosa. The show trial for Paul Manafort. These are the things CNN chipmunks chattered about endlessly the last few days. But CNN has no news judgment because it is run by a moron with a Harvard degree and a Napoleon Complex.

To find the news, I read the South China Morning Post, which is worried spitless that the Red Chinese economy will tank like its stock market has.

(Its stocks overall have declined in value by 40% in the last three years. Our stocks are up 33% since we elected Trump. In the eight years from Obama's election to Trump's, the Dow rose by 33%.)

#1  Whenever folks talk about trade wars they assume both sides are equally damaged. That might have happened before the Great Depression but hardly seems the most likely scenerio and Trump was able to see the situation clearly.

China seems to have two options: (1) Losing face and agreeing to Trumps terms = America wins (2) Continuing as before and watching their economy collapse = America wins.

There is a war option as well but I think the odds of that are insignificant.

#2  China is far ahead of the USA in the "collapse gap" - regardless of Trump's actions. Virtually all large nations are virtual deadbeats, in the sense that they can never pay off the debts they have accumulated. China is much closer to economic collapse than the USA is. The whole world is vulnerable to the ongoing greatest debt bubble in world history.

Turkey strikes YBS vehicles in Shingal, killing local PKK leader
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish war planes struck YBS-held areas of Shingal on Wednesday, killing local PKK head Zaki Shingali.

Khal Ali, a former YBS commander and a current Hashd al-Shaabi official, confirmed the killing of Zaki Shingali, the leader of all PKK forces in Shingal.

He added four YBS fighters were killed and Haval Mazlum, the general commander of YBS in Shingal was maimed.

The Ottoman Turkish military confirmed a joint operation between it and national intelligence carried out a joint operation on Wednesday in Shingal against the PKK and KCK, killing Ismail Ozden, also known as Zaki Shingali.

Acting Snune Mayor Khudaida Chuke told Rudaw that the jets targeted checkpoints of the Shingal Protection Units (YBS).

Qasim Shasho, a Peshmerga commander in Shingal, told Rudaw Ottoman Turkish forces targeted a convoy of four YBS vehicles.

A Yezidi activist group tweeted they were "very worried" about "more than five kabooms."

The YBS, with ties to the PKK, has previously said it would only incorporate locals.

Snune is a sub-district of Shingal, located in northwestern Iraq in the Kurdistan Region. The Shingal region is the Yezidi homeland.

A Yezidi organization's executive director, Yazda co-founder Murad Ismael, tweeted that ISIS survivors were in the southern Shingal town of Kocho to mourn four years after the genocide.

The YBS convoy had returned from the fourth anniversary of the Yezidis massacre in Kocho village while they were targeted in the Sikne area near Snune, according to Shasho.

The bombing came a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi visited Ankara where he met Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...

William McRaven, commander of the Osama bin Laden raid, asks Trump to revoke his security clearance
[SF Gate] One day after President Donald Trump stripped former CIA director John Brennan of his security clearance, the commander of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden said it would be an honor if the president would take away his own clearance next.

William McRaven, a retired four-star admiral who oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid, directly addressed Trump in a Washington Post op-ed published online Thursday.

In the op-ed, McRaven, who retired from the Navy in 2014, described Brennan as "a man of unparalleled integrity, whose honesty and character have never been in question, except by those who don't know him."
I never personally "knew" Che, Pablo Escobar, Fidel, Saddam, Manuel Noriega, or Villa, but I'm pretty sure they were all scoundrels, similar to Brennan.
In this 2012 photo, Admiral William McRaven, commander of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), listens as President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. McRaven condemned President Donald Trump on Thursday for revoking the security clearance of former CIA chief John Brennan and asked that his be withdrawn as well.
Yet another confirmation of the failed 1986 Goldwater Nichols Reorg Act (separate budget). DoD lost control of these people whilst the Klingons quickly assumed control. Endless Klingon wars soon followed.
"Therefore, I would consider it an honor if you would revoke my security clearance as well, so I can add my name to the list of men and women who have spoken up against your presidency," McRaven said in the piece.
Huh er, really Admiral? Flag officers can be recalled at anytime. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe you were 'retired' vs discharged. Your clearance is a condition of employment and yes,....recall to active duty. If you cannot be recalled (say you defect, are convicted of a felony, or renounce your citizenship and move elsewhere), then perhaps you should immediately forfeit your pension. Be sure about what you're asking for, admiral, be very sure.
Courtesy of 746, Business Insider’s op-ed on the subject adds:
McRaven continued by describing the qualities of a good leader; characteristics he said he "hoped" that Trump would embody after becoming president.

"A good leader sets the example for others to follow," McRaven said. "A good leader always puts the welfare of others before himself or herself."

"Your leadership, however, has shown little of these qualities," McRaven said. "Through your actions, you have embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation."

McRaven retired from the Navy in 2014 after 36 years of service as a Navy SEAL. He was hired as chancellor of the University of Texas' school system in 2015. In 2017, McRaven announced he would leave the school, citing health concerns.

Fifth Column
Botched CIA Communications System Helped Blow Cover of Chinese Agents
Via this thread at Ycombinator's Hacker News. Another exciting episode of Masters of Tradecraft.
[ForeignPolicy] The number of informants executed in the debacle is higher than initially thought.

It was considered one of the CIA’s worst failures in decades: Over a two-year period starting in late 2010, Chinese authorities systematically dismantled the agency’s network of agents across the country, executing dozens of suspected U.S. spies. But since then, a question has loomed over the entire debacle.

How were the Chinese able to roll up the network?

Now, nearly eight years later, it appears that the agency botched the communication system it used to interact with its sources, according to five current and former intelligence officials. The CIA had imported the system from its Middle East operations, where the online environment was considerably less hazardous, and apparently underestimated China’s ability to penetrate it.

"The attitude was that we’ve got this, we’re untouchable," said one of the officials who, like the others, declined to be named discussing sensitive information. The former official described the attitude of those in the agency who worked on China at the time as "invincible."

Other factors played a role as well, including China’s alleged recruitment of former CIA officer Jerry Chun Shing Lee around the same time. Federal prosecutors indicted Lee earlier this year in connection with the affair.

But the penetration of the communication system seems to account for the speed and accuracy with which Chinese authorities moved against the CIA’s China-based assets.

"You could tell the Chinese weren’t guessing. The Ministry of State Security [which handles both foreign intelligence and domestic security] were always pulling in the right people," one of the officials said.

"When things started going bad, they went bad fast."

The former officials also said the real number of CIA assets and those in their orbit executed by China during the two-year period was around 30, though some sources spoke of higher figures. The New York Times, which first reported the story last year, put the number at "more than a dozen." All the CIA assets detained by Chinese intelligence around this time were eventually killed, the former officials said.
But don't worry, they'll protect us from having a president who's been peed on by Russian prostitutes, that's for sure. Never mind that everyone else who sides with the US against the commies winds up as a horrible example.
Platte River Network (PRN) 'home brew’ servers and Nellie Ohr ham radio training could have prevented much of this unpleasantness, had they not been on other assignments.

Home Front: Politix
Yes, Revoking John Brennan’s Security Clearance Raises Constitutional Concerns
By David French
[NATIONALREVIEW] Let’s begin with two assertions that should, at least, be relatively uncontroversial. First, Article II of the United States Constitution grants the president broad authority to defend the nation as commander in chief of its armed forces. Second, that authority is not so broad as to always override individual constitutional rights whenever the president deems the two to be in conflict.
Who can disagree with a statement of the obvious?
To take an extreme example, while the president clearly can exercise great control over the standards for entry into and promotion within the military, no one would credibly argue that he can ban recruits from the opposing party. While the president clearly can exercise great control over who receives a security clearance, he could not revoke clearances from all Democrats on the grounds that the #Resistance was too pervasive in the party’s ranks.
Makes sense to me. But he could revoke the security clearances of specific individuals for cause.
In other words, in our constitutional system, even great power carries with it constitutional limits. Moreover, it is right and proper to weigh any given executive action against those limits.
Well, yeah. But I'm not sure it's right and proper to jump on any presidential action a body doesn't agree with and start niggling.
And that brings me to Donald Trump’s decision yesterday to revoke former CIA director John Brennan’s security clearance.
I thought it might. Ready to niggle?
In the formal statement announcing the action, the White House articulated reasons for the termination that — on their face — raised no serious constitutional concerns. According to the administration, Brennan was “erratic,” had a history of behavior that “calls into question his objectivity and credibility,” and engaged in “increasingly frenzied commentary.”
All of which is on the mark true.
One claim in particular stands out as particularly damaging to Brennan:
In 2014 . . . he denied to Congress that CIA officials under his supervision had improperly accessed the computer files of congressional staffers. He told the Council of Foreign Relations that the CIA would never do such a thing. The CIA’s Inspector General, however, contradicted Mr. Brennan directly, concluding unequivocally that agency officials had indeed improperly accessed congressional staffers’ files.
Only a blindly dedicated partisan would claim that lying to Congress doesn’t raise concerns about an official’s truthfulness and character. If that was the true reason for revoking Brennan’s security clearance, then he should absorb the blow, move on, and consider himself fortunate. He’s faced only minimal sanction for a serious offense.
Here's where we part company. I'm headed for logic and legal, and I think he's headed for Tucumcari.
But what if that’s not the real reason he lost his clearance?
It doesn't matter what the "real" reason is. What matters is whether the stated reasons are valid, which they are on their face.
What if the real reason is the one articulated by President Trump himself in an interview with the Wall Street Journal? There, Trump decried the “rigged witch hunt,” declared that “these people led it,” and added that “it’s something that had to be done.” By “these people” he was apparently referring not just to Brennan but also to former director of national intelligence James Clapper, former FBI director James Comey, and former NSA chief Michael Hayden.
Brennan, Clapper, Comey, the lot of 'em, are no longer filling government positions. What possible need do they have for security clearances? The thing is, you can have Top Secret and ultra-compartmented clearances, and if you don't have the need to know, as part of your job, you should have no more access than the lady behind the counter at the drug store or the teller at the bank. You can't just snuggle up to someone and say "I've got a Top Secret clearance. Let's chat about what's up in Uzbekistan." Open source (I've seen it called OSINT) information is all that's appropriate. Losing his clearance should have no effect on Brennan or any of his clones from the Obama years, unless he and his buddies still retaining clearances were abusing them. I suppose they'll just have to reapply if that cush job with Lockheed comes open.

#17  I just want the list of papers; so, I can block their websites from my browser.

According to this article at Real Clear Politics, nobody knows, rammer.

It was not clear how many newspapers participated. Marjorie Pritchard, the editor who launched the campaign, said earlier in the week that some 350 news organizations indicated they would, but she did not immediately return messages on Thursday. Even with the coordinated effort, there was some significant blowback from newspapers that wrote to say they would not participate.

The New York Times encouraged readers to subscribe to a local newspaper. “We’re all in this together,” the Times said.

That last sentiment made some journalists skittish. Some newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, the Rome (N.Y.) Daily Sentinel and the Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch, contained editorials or columns explaining why they weren’t joining the Globe’s effort. Some worried that it played into the hands of Trump and his supporters who think the media is out to get him. The idea of a coordinated campaign simply left others cold, with one newspaper referencing a longtime rivalry.

“We prize our independence, both from government and from other media outlets,” the New York Daily News wrote. “Coordination, especially with Boston, isn’t in our nature.”

There was also some scolding of the press — from the press — for letting distaste for Trump show up where it shouldn’t in news stories.

“Just as his lack of restraint has often been the president’s self-inflicted wound, the bias of some of the press has hurt journalism, at the very moment when it is most needed to save itself,” said the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It is time for a truce.”

Nancy Pelosi: Maxine Waters ‘Strikes Fear in the Heart’ of Trump
[BREITBART] House Minority Leader Nancy San Fran Nan Pelosi
Congresswoman-for-Life from the San Francisco Bay Area, born into a family of professional politicians. Formerly Speaker of the House, but it's not her fault they lost. Really. Noted for her heavily botoxed grimace...
(D-CA) claimed on Wednesday that Rep. Maxine Waters
U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district, serving since 1991, a total of 26.709869935324612 years. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the most senior of the 12 black women currently serving in the United States Congress, is a member and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Before becoming a member of Congress she served in the California Assembly, to which she was first elected back when Disco was in flower, in 1976, which would make it 41.70781654726595 years. She has been a politician for virtually all her adult life. If she was brighter she'd be a Communist...
'>Comrade Maxine Waters (D-CA) "strikes fear in the heart" of President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
.

Pelosi was responding to Trump’s tweet that wished "Happy Birthday to the leader of the Democrat Party, Comrade Maxine Waters!"

Over the weekend in interviews with MSNBC and PoliticusUSA, Pelosi claimed that Republicans were scared of Waters and her because the Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Democrats were effective female politicians.

Pelosi, who got Democrats Obamacare
... aka the Affordable Care Act, an ineptly designed and worse executed piece of legislation designed to bring 17 percent of the U.S. economy under the direct control of the government. The previous iteration, known as Hillarycare, was laughed out of Washington. This stinker was passed on a party-line vote without being read...
and infamously said that Congress had to pass the bill to find out what was in it, even said Republicans were scared of her because she eats their lunch and outsmarts them at the negotiating table.

"They sat across the table from me, they know I can eat their lunch on the negotiations and I always have," she told PoliticusUSA before later telling MSNBC that Republicans have always been afraid of her because she raises tons of money and outsmarts them at the negotiating table.

Pelosi and Waters, though, have clashed this year over impeachment and Waters’ call for anti-Trump agitators to "harass" members of the Trump administration. Pelosi even called Waters’ incendiary remarks "unacceptable."

PTI's Imran Ali Shah in hotter waters as stepmother alleges abuse, property theft
[GEO.TV] It seems that PTI MPA-elect Imran Ali Shah's worries have just started and do not seem to be subsiding any time soon.

A day after Shah, the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) member elected from the metropolis' North Nazimabad area, made headlines for publicly humiliating and beating a civilian, his stepmother has stepped forward with serious allegations, including abuse and snatching rightful property.

In a video uploaded on social media, Professor Dr Rehana Shah, the alleged maltreater's stepmother and wife of Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, the late former minister of sports for Sindh, claimed that the biggest challenge she faced after her marriage was that the children from her new spouse's previous wife ‐ Imran and Junaid Ali Shah ‐ never accepted their father's second wife.

Dr Rehana, an orthopaedic surgeon by profession, explained that she had married the late provincial minister Dr Muhammad Ali Shah in 1989 and that with him, she had a son named Mustafa Ali Shah.

She alleged that in the past, Imran Ali Shah had "entered the surgeon room in A.O. Clinic [in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's Nazimabad] with his guards and subjected me to brutality", whereafter he used verbally abused her.

The PTI MPA-elect had then gone on to threaten Dr Rehana, she claimed, that if she didn't "leave A.O. Clinic, we will harm you and your son". In her video, she commented that she had her son, Mustafa Ali Shah, relocate to the United States due to the threats made by Imran Ali Shah.

When Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, her husband, passed away later, she was in the US with her son but was not allowed to join in the funeral, she lamented in the video clip.

Later, upon her return from the US to Pakistain, she claimed that she discovered that both of her stepsons, Imran and Junaid Ali Shah, had submitted a "false will" to the Sindh High Court, wherein they had claimed that only the two of them were the rightful owners of the late provincial minister's estate.

She further explained that her two stepsons had the District Central prepare false divorce papers, which state that the said divorce between Dr Rehana and the late minister took place in 1994. Interestingly, however, she said Mustafa, her son with Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, was born in 1996.

"I have Mustafa Ali Shah's birth certificate, which mentions Dr Muhammad Ali Shah's name as the father," she stated in the video, adding that she was fighting her case in the courts but was "scared for my life, especially after Imran Ali Shah became an MPA".

"I'm very fearful for myself and my son. Anything may happen to me or my son any time."

It was in this regard that Dr Rehana appealed to Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
, the PTI chief and Prime Minister-in-waiting, to help get her justice.

"If you really are the chief of the PTI, please get us our rights. I have all evidence and legal documents but we are being deprived of our rights."

German firms ignore EU appeal, end Iran projects
[PRESSTV] Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Bahn, two state-owned German companies, are following car manufacturer Daimler and mechanical engineering company Herrenknecht to withdraw from Iran because of US sanctions.

Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications provider, already stopped all transactions in Iran in May. Deutsche Bahn will have its projects phased out by the end of September, German weekly business news magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported Thursday.

Both companies have confirmed the report. They are ignoring an appeal by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who has called on Europeans to intensify Iran business in response to President Donald Trump

Deutsche Bahn is currently involved with its subsidiary DB Engineering & Consulting in two projects in Iran, a corporate spokeswoman said on Thursday.

"Both projects will be ended in August and September 2018 respectively," she said. "Due to the altered banking practice we have sought to bring the contract to an amicable and timely conclusion."

Unemployment in Iran: major increase imminent

[RadioFarda] Iranian Auto parts manufacturers says 450 thousand workers in this industry are likely to lose their jobs as a result of Iran's foreign currency crisis. At the same time, Iranian media report that rising prices of foodstuff and cost of housing on a daily basis make life harder for most Iranians....Speaking on the job losses in the automobile industry at a press conference in Tehran on Monday August 14, board members of the Auto Parts Manufacturers Association said the output of Iranian car makers is about to face an 80 percent decline because of rial's loss of value.

Board Member Maziar Beiglu said so far 14,000 workers have lost their jobs in the auto parts industry.

He added that part makers will no longer be able to continue their business by September 22 if the government does not provide cheap dollars to pay for needed imports.

Iran's former Labor Minister Ai Rabiei had said last week that about one million Iranians would lose their jobs as a result of economic pressures caused by renewed US sanctions against Iran.

Zardari aide gets aggressive with FIA officials at Karachi airport
[GEO.TV] Anwar Majeed, owner of Omni Group and a close aide of former president Asif Zardari, was transported to Karachi from the capital by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday evening.

In the footage available with Geo News, FIA officials could be seen trying to handcuff Majeed and his son Abdul Ghani inside the airport lounge, following which Majeed snatched the handcuffs and tossed them on the floor.

The two were eventually shifted to the FIA commercial banking circle office.

The duo would be produced before court tomorrow in a case pertaining to money laundering through fictitious bank accounts.

Both were arrested on Wednesday by the FIA after their bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court.

The agency is investigating 32 people in relation to money laundering from fictitious accounts, including Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

Another close aide of Zardari, Hussain Lawai, was arrested last month in connection with the probe.

Over 20 ‘benami’ accounts at some private banks were opened in 2013, 2014 and 2015 from where transactions worth billions of rupees were made, according to sources.

The amount, according to FIA sources, is said to be black money gathered from various kickbacks, commissions and bribes.

1 dead in double shooting outside Southwest Baltimore business park
[BALTIMORESUN] Baltimore police were searching for a suspect following a double shooting Thursday morning that killed one man and injured another in Southwest Baltimore.

A police officer witnessed the shooting at about 7:50 a.m. in the 1100 block of Desoto Road in Southwest Baltimore’s Wilhelm Park neighborhood, police spokesman T.J. Smith said. The shooting took place outside the Desoto Business Park at the road’s intersection with Wilmarco Avenue.

The officer, who was in uniform in a marked police car, saw a man in a black Infiniti SUV pull up next to a gray Dodge pickup truck and fire a gun into the truck, striking two occupants inside the vehicle, Smith said.

Drugs were found on the scene, and the victims appeared to be targeted, Smith said.

“Based on every indication we have from witnesses, from the officer on the scene, the shooter specifically targeted this vehicle,” Smith said.

Police were searching for a suspect in Southwest Baltimore after a shooting that killed one man and injured another.

“The officer was right here in the area, he saw this, he gave chase immediately to the suspect, tried to get him in custody knowing a violent crime had just occurred,” Smith said.

Police are searching for a 5-foot-11 black male in his early 20s in the area of Desoto Road and Washington Boulevard, Smith said. The man was wearing blue jeans without a shirt, and had shoulder-length dreadlocks, Smith said.

During the search, some roads in the area were closed and nearby residents were told to stay in their homes because the suspect could be armed. Maryland State Police and helicopter units assisted in the search.

Body of missing Colorado woman found at husband's place of work, police say
[FOXNEWS] The body of a pregnant Colorado mom who was killed along with her young daughters was recovered Thursday at the place of work of Chris Watts ‐ the woman's husband, the children's father and the man accused of killing them all.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said authorities found the body of 34-year-old Shanann Watts three days after she was reported missing. Her body was found on the property owned by Anadarko Petroleum, where her husband worked.

John Camper, director for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, said cops have strong reason to believe they know where the bodies of her two daughters, 3-year-old Celeste and 4-year-old Bella, may be and are trying to recover them.

"This is absolutely the worst possible outcome that anyone could imagine," he said. "As horrible as this outcome is, our role now is to do everything we can to determine exactly what occurred."

Chris Watts, 33, has reportedly admitted to killing his wife and their two daughters. He is being held in the Weld County Jail on three counts of first-degree murder and three charges of tampering with physical evidence. He is due in court on Thursday afternoon.

Judge: 'Well-planned conspiracy' to kill Kim Jong-nam
[Al Jazeera] A Malaysian judge has ruled that two women accused of participating in the liquidation of the North Korean leader's estranged brother must mount a defence, setting the stage for a lengthy case, which could last for several more months.

The proceedings on Thursday could have ended with the court ordering the release of 25-year-old Indonesian citizen, Siti Aisyah, and Vietnamese national Doan Thi Huong, who is 28.

They are accused of killing Kim Jong-nam by smearing a toxic agent, known as VX, on his face while he was at Kuala Lumpur's airport on February 13, 2017.

The women say that they thought they were taking part in a prank for a reality TV show. Defence lawyers said the real culprits had left the country at a hearing last year.

NSA broke into secure network of Al Jazeera and others
[Al Jazeera] The National Security Agency (NSA), a US intelligence agency tasked with collecting data for foreign and counter intelligence operations, broke into the encrypted network of the Al Jazeera Media Network and several others in 2006, according to a report by US media.
Since it's a national intelligence resource, that's precisely what I'd expect it to do. US media might do well to consider what "US" means.
A document provided to The Intercept by NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden shows that the NSA cracked Al Jazeera's Virtual Private Network (VPN), an encrypted tunnel used to secure internet traffic.

"Recently, NSA has decrypted a number of interesting targets ... deemed by product lines to have high potential as sources of intelligence," the document states, which is then followed by a list of targets.

That list includes Al Jazeera, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence and Interior, the Iraqi state internet provider and four airlines from Russia, Paraguay and Iran.

The network that was broken into is a so-called VPN network, a digital tunnel of sorts which all internet traffic gets sent through to protect it from prying eyes.

According to the document, the VPNs used by the listed companies and institutions were all decrypted, although details on how exactly this was done are not specified.

The data collected after decrypting the internet traffic was "being evaluated for intelligence content."

"Hundreds of additional VPN links have also been identified and are being investigated," it added.

Swamped in Inflation, Venezuela Will Cut Five Zeros from Currency
It's JUST.THAT.EASY.
[NYT via WRAL.com] Faced with nearly incomprehensible inflation ‐ 32,714 percent as of Wednesday ‐ Venezuelan officials thought they had a solution: They changed the color of the bank notes and increased their denomination. Then they said they would lop off three zeros. And when that didn't seem enough, they announced they would cut off two more.

The tactics have left Venezuelans like Yosmar Nowak, the owner of a coffee shop in Caracas, convinced that there is no solution in sight and that the government cannot even bring down the price of a cup of coffee, an eye-watering 2 million bolivars.

"I imagine if we keep like this we're going to have to do the same thing in December," said Nowak, who has been forced to raise prices in her cafe at least 40 times this year.

Slashing zeros from Venezuela's inflation-cursed currency, the bolivar, is the tent-pole of a set of economic changes by President Nicolás Maduro as he tries to right his country's capsized economy. The five-digit inflation has earned Venezuela comparisons to the hyperinflation of Zimbabwe and Weimar Germany from the International Monetary Fund.

The newly minted currency, which will be known as the "sovereign bolívar," will be rolled out Monday. In addition, the president has ordered measures his United Socialist Party has been loath to consider in the past: An increase in gas prices for some drivers and a modest ease in the currency controls that have made dollars inaccessible to most Venezuelans for years.

Yet these changes haven't been enough to convince economists, who see desperation in Maduro's latest moves and view the new currency as another chapter in the decades of mismanagement that have destroyed the Venezuelan economy.

"It's a cosmetic thing that's happening, the zeros," said Steve Hanke, an applied economics professor at Johns Hopkins University who has advised governments facing hyperinflation. "It means nothing unless you change economic policy."
No shit?

NYU offers full-tuition scholarships for all medical students
[FOXNEWS] New York University said Thursday that it will cover tuition for all its medical students regardless of their financial situation, a first among the nation’s major medical schools and an attempt to expand career options for graduates who won’t be saddled with six-figure debt.

School officials worry that rising tuition and soaring loan balances are pushing new doctors into high-paying fields and contributing to a shortage of researchers and primary care physicians. Medical schools nationwide have been conducting aggressive fundraising campaigns to compete for top prospects, alleviate the debt burden and give graduates more career choices.

NYU raised more than $450 million of the roughly $600 million it estimates it will need to fund the tuition package in perpetuity, including $100 million from Home Depot founder Kenneth Langone and his wife, Elaine. The school will provide full-tuition scholarships for 92 first-year students‐another 10 are already covered through M.D./PhD programs‐as well as 350 students already partway through the M.D.-only degree program.

"This is going to be a huge game-changer for us, for our students and for our patients," said Dr. Rafael Rivera, associate dean for admission and financial aid. The school will refund out-of-pocket tuition payments already made for the current year, and return loans students may have taken out.

FCC targets pirate radio station that broadcasts Alex Jones
[THEHILL] The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has shut down a pirate radio station known for its broadcasts of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday that the station, Liberty Radio, was hit with a $15,000 fine and at least temporarily pulled from the airwaves.

The newspaper reported that a lawsuit filed in federal court in Austin alleged that Liberty Radio had functioned without a license since at least 2013, and had been transmitting from a tower at an Austin apartment complex.

Liberty Radio, or LRN.FM, stopped airing on the radio in December, but still streams online.

The FCC is charging that the station was also illegally broadcasting on an FM wavelength.

The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported that Walter Olenick and M. Rae Nadler-Olenick were named as the defendants in the lawsuit, and the apartment complex from which the station was transmitting is linked to them.

The Olenicks reportedly told the FCC that they would not pay the fine and would treat any agency representatives as trespassers.

Media reports, including the local Statesman, described the station as Jones's "flagship" outlet; NPR reported Thursday that it had picked up the nickname "Alex Jones Radio" over the years.

The station does air rebroadcasts of "The Alex Jones Show."

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
station host Danny Sessom wrote in a Facebook post late Wednesday that media reports describing the station as Jones's "flagship" are "actual fake news," noting that Jones didn't broadcast from the station.

#5  The beauty of the pre-social media internet is that it was flat. That is, anyone could publish a website, and every website existed on the same plane as every other.

When Facebook first got started I couldn't understand it. Why would I want to publish anything on a platform that looks as clunky as that when I could set up my own website and have total control over the look and feel of the thing as well as the content. But that's because I'm a techie and setting up a web page would be easy for me. Setting up a web page would be easy for a lot of people because HTML is really not that hard to learn. But I guess if you're a snowflake...

Libyan court sentences 45 to death over protest killings
[Al Jazeera] A Libyan court has sentenced 45 people to death by firing squad for killings committed in the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, during the 2011 uprising

The statement published by the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday did not give any further details about the case.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
an official said the sentences were linked to killings perpetrated by forces loyal to former ruler Muammar Qadaffy
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years until his people get tired of him and kill him...
shortly before he was toppled.

A further 54 people were sentenced to five years in prison over the deaths of at least 20 people, while 22 others were acquitted.

Defence lawyers and relatives of the accused were present for the verdict, but the defendants were not in court.

A picture of the proceedings posted by the ministry showed two guards with large guns standing close to black-robed judges inside the courtroom.

It is not known whether other death sentences handed down in Libya since 2011 have been carried out.

Rights group Amnesia Amnesty International, in its latest annual report, described Libya's court system as "dysfunctional."

The group said many suspects had been held since 2011 with no judicial oversight or means to challenge the legality of their detention.

Homs governor says refugees afraid to return to Palmyra because of US presence
[ALMASDARNEWS] Syrian refugees are afraid of returning to the city of Palmyra in Syria’s Homs province as long as there are US forces nearby in at-Tanf as well as some ISIS* turbans in the neighboring desert, the regional governor said Wednesday.

"Few people have returned ‐ only 200 families... People are worried, they are afraid to return to Palmyra, as well as to Sukhnah, because they are close to the US base At Tanf. There are US troops there, as well as several IS units, which are wandering in the desert," Talal Barazi said.

He added that Syrians would feel secure only once ISIS eliminated, and the US servicemen leave At Tanf.

Syria has been torn by civil war since 2011, with the government fighting numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations. The Syrian forces, with the support of Russia, regained control of Syrian Palmyra in March 2017.

South Sudan: Chinese peacekeepers resolve conflict in Juba refugee camps
[AFRICANEWS] The infantry battalion of China’s fourth peacekeeping force to South Sudan managed to resolve a conflict among refugees in Juba on Tuesday.

The conflict was allegedly caused by a theft incident on Sunday in the third camp.

Chinese soldiers intervened after receiving reports of knife fights between refugees next to the third UN refugee camp. A seriously injured refugee was immediately rescued by the Chinese military.

Shortly after the maimed were sent to hospital, refugees from the first camp crossed the barrier and fought with those from the third camp.

Despite warnings from the peacekeepers, some refugees continued to attack their neighbours, forcing the commander to use tear gas to resolve the conflict.

Two platoons of Chinese peacekeepers were dispatched to separate the refugees and the situation was brought under control.

Peacekeeping forces from other countries have also intervened to ease tensions.

Following the incident, the Chinese contingent deployed a further 323 peacekeepers to protect personnel of the United Nations
