Dogs' Love of Man Is Real
[National Review] A new study confirms that your four-legged friend isn’t just conning you for food.

One of my favorite kinds of news stories is the report of a new scientific study that verifies the obvious. You’ve seen them. New research finds that heterosexual men are attracted to very attractive women.

Evidence collected by wildlife researchers has confirmed that bears really do use the woods as toilets. But some research that corroborates the obvious is exciting because some people refuse to accept the obvious. Which brings me to the work of Dr. Gregory Berns, a neuroscientist at Emory University and the author of What It’s Like to Be a Dog.

Berns has, from what I can tell, the best gig in neuroscience. He spends all day taking pictures of dog brains. Don’t worry: He doesn’t remove them. He uses magnetic resonance imaging to study what’s going on in Fido’s head. It’s tougher than it sounds because the dogs have to hold absolutely still for Berns to get a good read. But that’s OK. They got the goodest doggos around, as folks on dog-obsessed Twitter might say, to volunteer. And what did Berns discover? Something that almost every dog owner in the world could have told you: Dogs aren’t faking it when they act like they love you. Because it’s not an act.

McCain May Have Killed Republicans' Last Chance To Repeal Obamacare
[Daily Caller] Sen. John McCain of Arizona announced Friday afternoon that he will vote against his Republican colleagues’ last-ditch effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"I cannot in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal. I believe we could do better working together, Republicans and Democrats, and have not yet really tried," he said in a statement Friday.

Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, along with Sens. Dean Heller of Nevada and Ron Johnson Wisconsin, put forth a bill that would repeal major portions of Obamacare and replace the system’s funding mechanism with block grants in an attempt, according to the senators, to promote state innovation in the implementation of health care.

McCain was, along with Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, serving as one the key holdouts.

Republicans need 50 "yes" votes to pass the bill under the Senate’s budget reconciliation, and they currently have roughly 48 senators behind the bill, according to Cassidy.

From Russia with Fuel: North Korean Ships May Be Undermining Sanctions
Hat tip: gCaptain
A nice account of the nefariousness of the NORK business. Nobody knows nothin' but everyone knows how this nasty little business works.

At least eight North Korean ships that left Russia with a cargo of fuel this year headed for their homeland despite declaring other destinations, a ploy that U.S. officials say is often used to undermine sanctions.

Reuters has no evidence of wrongdoing by the vessels, whose movements were recorded in Reuters ship-tracking data. Changing a ship's destination once underway is not forbidden and it is unclear whether any of the ships unloaded fuel in North Korea.

Protesters Interrupt Comey's Speech At Howard University [VIDEO]
[Daily Caller] Former FBI Director James Comey’s keynote speech at Howard University was interrupted by protesters singing "We Shall Not Be Moved."

Comey was set to speak at Howard’s 2017-18 convocation as the school’s endowed chair of public policy, but he didn’t receive a warm welcome from some students at the historically black college.

A group of students in the back of the auditorium stood up during Comey’s speech with their fists raised to indicate "black power." The group sang the old spiritual song, "We Shall Not Be Moved" and broke out into chants about being black.

"I said I love being black!" one protester yelled, cuing the other protesters to repeat it back. "I love the color of my skin!"

-Land of the Free
The Confederate Statue Controversy Isn't About Slavery, It's About Ending America
[The Federalist] Attacks on Confederate heritage have quickly evolved into attacks on American heritage, which was always the ultimate goal.

Whether the rest of the country likes it or not, what happens in Texas matters a lot, not just because it’s the second most populous state but also because it serves as a kind of bellwether for what’s going on in those parts of America that coastal elites would prefer to ignore.

That’s especially true of the controversy over Confederate statues and symbols and names, of which there are many in Texas, along with people in power who feel obliged to get rid of them. But if you think the iconoclastic impulse to purge public memory of the Confederacy has anything to do with the Civil War or a deeper understanding of American history, you haven’t been paying attention. The campaign against Confederate heritage is really a campaign against American heritage. The goal is to divide the country into irreconcilable camps for the purpose of waging political warfare. In the end, it’s really about giving up on the idea of America as a place where, despite our many differences, we can be a united and prosperous people.

Here again Texas is a bellwether. This week, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus requested that an old plaque about the Confederacy be removed from the Capitol in Austin. The plaque itself is a piece of mid-twentieth-century Confederate Lost Cause paraphernalia that was erected in 1959, likely in protest of the Civil Rights movement. It claims the Civil War wasn’t really about slavery and the Confederacy wasn’t really a rebellion. Straus, a Republican, wants the thing to come down because it isn’t accurate. And he’s right: the Confederacy was indeed a rebellion, specifically over the issue of slavery. It should probably come down, in part because it probably shouldn’t have been put up in the first place.

But in issuing his request, Straus has become the latest well-meaning public figure to blunder into the Confederate monument mêlée under the misperception that it’s all about accurately portraying history. If it were, those calling for the removal of statues and the renaming of schools would have articulated some limiting principle to prevent the defunding of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC, or the removal of a Christopher Columbus statue in New York City, or the dynamiting of Mount Rushmore.

Sharyl Attkisson Rips Media for Ignoring Weaponization of Intel Agencies under Soetoro
[Tennessee Star] Investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson says media outlets are "diving deeply into minutiae" to avoid a stark development: President Trump's previously ridiculed "wiretapping" claims appear to be true.

Ms. Attkisson has warned of the weaponization of intelligence agencies since her laptop for CBS News stories was hacked on multiple occasions in 2013. An op-ed she wrote for The Hill on Wednesday presented an extensive case that U.S. intelligence agencies under former President Barack Obama were manipulated for political purposes - and that pundits are willfully ignoring it.

She highlighted reports that the FBI did monitor the communications of Mr. Trump's then campaign head Paul Manafort prior to the 2016 election, along with what seems to be at least six associates.

"Officials involved in the surveillance and unmasking of U.S. citizens have said their actions were legal and not politically motivated. [...] But look at the patterns," Ms. Attkisson wrote. "It seems that government monitoring of journalists, members of Congress and political enemies - under multiple administrations - has become more common than anyone would have imagined two decades ago. Those deflecting with minutiae are missing the point. To me, they sound like the ones who aren't thinking."

The reporter, who now hosts "Full Measure" on Sinclair's Sunday TV program, buttressed her claims with the following observations:

Jeff Flake offers rare defense of President Trump over 'Nambia' flub
[Wash Examiner] Sen. Jeff Flake offered a rare defense of President Trump on Thursday over the president's pronunciation flub of an African nation.

Trump was widely mocked Wednesday when he mispronounced Namibia as "Nambia" while praising the country's healthcare system in a speech to African leaders.

The mistake earned him headlines like "Trump praises health care of Nambia, a nonexistent African country" from CNN.

In a tweet Thursday evening, Flake, who is a vocal Republican critic of Trump's, asked people give Trump a pass on this one.

"Give @realDonaldTrump a break on Namibia. I lived there during independence. Great country, tricky pronunciation," he said.

#1  Luckily, President Trump refrained from referencing the "57 States" or a United States Marine "Corpsman." Imagine the outrage had he said German South West Africa.

Any thanks for Namibian healthcare should go to German and South African colonists, not the indigenous tribal peoples. But before you lift a glass, the life expectancy over all is still under 64 years. Much is yet to be done, but much 'can' be done, when a country is free from 'endless wars.'

'Crooked Media' Byching and Moaning About President Trump
[Wash Examiner] President Trump is taking a toll on journalists and political commentators, some of whom are watching angrily Trump dives into healthcare and foreign policy, while others admit that covering Trump may be affecting their health.

ABC "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" host Jimmy Kimmel, who has risen as a prominent voice in the healthcare debate, was angry this week over Trump and Republicans' latest attempt repeal Obamacare. He criticized the new Graham-Cassidy GOP healthcare bill a "scam" that he said is supported by Republicans who "eight years ago, they didn't want anyone to have health care at all."

In his opening monologue, Kimmel also threatened a Fox News host who had previously accused Kimmel of being one of the "Hollywood elites" who are "pushing their politics on the rest of the country."

Calling Kilmeade a "phony little creep," Kimmel said, "I'll pound you when I see you."

Last weekend, liberal Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank said Trump's presidency is literally "killing" him.

New antibody attacks 99% of HIV strains
[BBC] Scientists have engineered an antibody that attacks 99% of HIV strains and can prevent infection in primates.

It is built to attack three critical parts of the virus - making it harder for HIV to resist its effects.

The work is a collaboration between the US National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical company Sanofi.

The International Aids Society said it was an "exciting breakthrough". Human trials will start in 2018 to see if it can prevent or treat infection.

Our bodies struggle to fight HIV because of the virus' incredible ability to mutate and change its appearance.

These varieties of HIV - or strains - in a single patient are comparable to those of influenza during a worldwide flu season.

So the immune system finds itself in a fight against an insurmountable number of strains of HIV.

#3  Not bullshit. Antibodies block certain receptors. Problem with HIV is our body doesn't make one well for the protein receptor it attacks. Some people have a mutated version and are immune from the virus. Creating an antibody in the lab and using an infected monkey or pig to pump out more of them isn't too far out there. They have been doing it for years against other viruses.

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of making explosives after man attacked in Leicester
[BBC] Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of making explosives after police searched two properties following a serious assault.

Officers arrived at a house in Daneshill Road, Leicester, on Wednesday morning and discovered a 55-year-old man had been attacked.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The force said the arrests were not related to terrorism and it was a "local police investigation".
The man was further arrested on suspicion of making explosives under suspicious circumstances.

Officers later searched a second property and seven other people were also arrested for the same offence, contrary to the Explosive Substances Act.

Leicestershire Police said it had "discovered items which caused some concern" while responding to reports of a serious assault.

The force said the arrests were not related to terrorism and it was a "local police investigation".

The 55-year-old man remains in hospital with injuries to his arm.

Mark Levin: ‘This is the GREAT… GRAND SCANDAL that we need to stay focused on!'
[Right Scoop] Mark Levin dropped a short video talking about the recent revelation that Paul Manafort was being wiretapped, saying that this was the great grand scandal we need to focus on.

I have to admit it’s pretty surprising that it was actually the case that a member of Trump’s campaign was literally wiretapped by the U.S. authorities. BUT there are still two things left to be proven. One, that Trump Tower was wiretapped, as Trump claimed, and two, that it was done for political reasons. While we, as right-wingers, just know the second is the case, we need evidence and proof in order to move the ball forward...

China-Japan-Koreas
The Latest: Analyst says biggest fear is a NORK atmospheric test
[Townhall] A U.S. nuclear and security analyst says his "biggest fear" is that North Korea's recent statements signal the country might conduct an atmospheric test of a nuclear weapon atop a missile.

Such tests have been conducted in the past by the United States and China but not in recent decades.

Vipin Narang, a nuclear expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said such a test would be worse than testing a longer range for an intercontinental ballistic missile, which is another scenario the North may be considering.

He said such a test could pose a danger to shipping and aircraft, even if the North declared a "keep out" zone, and would pose a risk to people if something went wrong. "We are talking about putting a live nuclear warhead on a missile that has been tested only a handful of times. It is truly terrifying if something goes wrong."

Without getting into too much detail, EMP effect zones are a function of burst height and strength...but if he does try it over the central Pacific, he'll be zorching his buddies in the PRC and the Nation Formerly Known As The Soviet Union.

If he takes a shot at Guam, the PI, Japan, or anybody else, it's all over.

And keep this in mind: EMP really does exist. On the other hand, you should ask why nobody has ever dumped a warhead out of an innocent-looking satellite yet.

[WSJ] U.S. authorities placed Paul Manafort under surveillance after he was ousted as Donald Trump’s campaign manager in the summer of 2016, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter.

The surveillance, which was part of a counterintelligence investigation into Russian interference with the presidential election, didn’t involve listening to Mr. Manafort’s phone communications in real-time, the officials said.

But armed with a warrant, investigators still could have conducted clandestine surveillance of Mr. Manafort, possibly by obtaining copies of his emails and other electronically stored communications, or by having agents follow him or conduct physical searches of his property.

The surveillance began after Mr. Manafort left the Trump campaign in August, but it is not clear when it was suspended. Mr. Manafort resigned after a spate of publicity about his consulting work in Ukraine on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s allies.

The government’s focus on Mr. Manafort has grown more intense in recent months. He has become one focus of a probe lead by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is examining possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia during the campaign as well as whether Mr. Trump obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey.

The Russian government and Mr. Trump have denied any wrongdoing.

Mr. Comey’s replacement, FBI Director Christopher Wray, met this week with congressional officials and discussed the law-enforcement agency’s surveillance of Mr. Manafort, according to a person briefed on the discussion.

An FBI spokesman declined to comment on Mr. Wray’s meeting with Congress.

In the face of mounting scrutiny and a CNN report he had been the target of a secret wiretap, Mr. Manafort suggested Thursday through a spokesman that he had been caught in the crossfire of the Russia investigation and accused the Obama administration of "pursuing surveillance against a political opponent."

"It’s unclear if Paul Manafort was the objective," said Jason Maloni, Mr. Manafort’s spokesman. "Perhaps the real objective was Donald Trump."

Lawyers: Aaron Hernandez had Severe CTE, but now fully recovered
[LI] Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez killed himself in his prison cell last April as he served a life sentence for a 2013 murder charge at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, MA.

His lawyers revealed today that tests on Hernandez’s brain "showed severe signs of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)." They also said that his daughter plans to sue the NFL and the Patriots "for leading Hernandez to believe the sport was safe."

Police Reports Suggest Dem IT Scandal Ringleader Abused Several Muslim Immigrant Women
[PJ] If you thought the Democrat IT scandal couldn't possibly get any crazier, think again. Because now it has been revealed that Imran Awan, the ringleader of the Pakistani clan under criminal investigation for allegedly stealing equipment and data from Congress, allegedly also beat Muslim immigrant women in his spare time.

Police reports obtained by The Daily Caller show that several woman outside of Awan's marriage to Hina Alvi have contacted law enforcement to report various forms of abuse at his hands, including battery, wiretapping, and threatening family members of one of the women.

In a recent piece designed to minimize the scandal, the Washington Post reported that the indicted former IT aide was popular with House Democrats because he was "charismatic and accommodating." That may be so, but he also apparently had a dark and sinister side.

According to the police reports, he "bloodied" one girlfriend and treated another one like his personal slave. He allegedly intimidated his stepmother by telling her that he had the power to have people kidnapped back home in Pakistan.

Sessions: Some undocumented minors are 'wolves in sheep clothing'
[The Hill] Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday called for a crackdown on illegal immigration and the influx of violent criminal gangs into the U.S.

"We are now working with the Department of Homeland Security and [Department of Health and Human Services] to examine the unaccompanied minors issue and the exploitation of that program by gang members who come to this country as wolves in sheep clothing," Sessions said.

Sessions blasted those "taking advantage" of the Unaccompanied Alien Children program during his speech before law enforcement officials outside a federal courthouse in Boston.

The program, run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, aims to take unaccompanied minors who enter the country illegally and place them in communities that it says are in "the best interests of the child."

"This program continues to place juveniles from Central America into this gang-controlled territory. It is clearly being abused," Sessions said, saying that the MS-13 gang was using the program as a recruitment tool.

Sessions condemned the actions of the MS-13, a violent gang also known as La Mara Salvatrucha that has settled and committed crimes in U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, Boston and New York. The gang originally came to Los Angeles in the 1980s.

"MS-13 represents some of the worst of the worst when it comes to criminal street gangs," Sessions said.

Grassley: Did FBI brief Trump campaign on Manafort, Russia?
[The Hill] Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wants know if the FBI warned the Trump campaign about attempts by individuals tied to Russia to "infiltrate" the organization.

Grassley sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday asking if the bureau had given "defensive briefings" or otherwise alerted Trump officials about "potential connections between campaign officials and the Russian government."

"If the FBI did provide a defensive briefing or similar warning to the campaign, then that would raise important questions about how the Trump campaign responded," wrote Grassley, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

If the FBI didn't brief the campaign, Grassley wants to know why not and who was involved in the discussions and if a controversial opposition research dossier ‐ which has been a frequent target of Grassley's ‐ impacted the decision.

Grassley is asking that the FBI respond to his letter by Oct. 4.

CNN reported this week that the FBI wiretapped the phones of Paul Manfort, Trump's former campaign chairman, during and after the 2016 campaign, using a secret court under obtained under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Manafort has emerged as a key figure in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's election meddling and potential ties between Moscow and Trump campaign officials.

Pointing to the CNN report, Grassley notes in his letter that recent press reports indicate that Manafort was being investigated by the federal government.

California Cities Sue Oil Companies over Climate Change
[Breitbart] City attorneys in San Francisco and Oakland, California, sued five oil companies in two coordinated lawsuits on Tuesday, arguing that the courts should hold these companies responsible for climate change, and force them to financially compensate the cities for harm the plaintiffs claim those companies are causing to the planet’s environment.
Can I get rice and beans with that? So very.... below the border.
The two cities are suing five of the top petroleum companies from around the world: BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobile, and Royal Dutch Shell. These local municipalities are suing them under California law for being a public nuisance.

The lawsuits use virtually identical language, like accusing the oil companies with language such as, "For decades, Defendants have known that their fossil fuels pose risks of ’severe’ and ’catastrophic’ impacts on the global climate through the works and warnings of their own scientists or through their trade association."

The cities’ complaints impugn the worst possible motives to the oil companies, comparing their actions to a sustained "propaganda campaign to deceive the public" to encourage "fuel consumption at levels that (as Defendants knew) [were] certain to severely harm the public."

Salahuddin Kombat Kronicle
Iraqi forces begin operations in Salahuddin

Shirqat (IraqiNews.com) ISIS News Today: Iraqi government and paramilitary forces recaptured several villages on Thursday as the government launched a wide-scale, final operation to retake all of Islamic State’s remaining havens.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command said Thursday and late Wednesday that major offensives were launching to retake Islamic State last bastions in Salahuddin’s Shirqat and Kirkuk’s Hawija. Other offensives had launched earlier this week at the group’s holdouts in western Anbar’s borders with Syria.

Iraqi air forces hit ISIS convoy near Hawija

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State convoy escaping southwestern Kirkuk toward east of Salahuddin province has been targeted in aerial shelling, a local source was quoted saying.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, the source said, “heavy shelling targeted on Thursday an IS convoy composed of several vehicles escaping Hawija, Kirkuk, toward Mutaibija in Salahuddin.”

The source, who asked to be anonymous, expected losses inflicted on the enemy.

Occasional attacks have been witnessed in Mutaibija by IS against government and paramilitary troops deployments since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMUs, launched a major offensive to retake IS-held areas.

The Iraqi army said in September its forces recaptured the western coast of Shirqat, located south of Mosul, on the west bank of the Tigris river, after being surrounded for months by Iraqi troops and the pro-government Shi’ite militias. The eastern coast of Shirqat, is still under the IS control.

ISIS troops quit the war in Salahuddin
It's all fun and games until the airstrikes begin
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have turned in themselves to security troops, north of Salahuddin, while others set headquarters on fire before escaping to Kirkuk.

“Seven IS militants extradited themselves to security troops in eastern Shirqat. Among the militants was Mendil Thanon, from western Shirqat,” the source told Baghdad Today on Thursday.

In related news, intelligence of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said IS militants set their headquarters in western Shirqat on fire before escaping toward Hawija in south west of Kirkuk.

A statement by the PMF’s media service said, “the militants burnt their headquarters located near al-Zab river before withdrawal from western Shirqat toward Hawija as Iraqi troops advance.”

PMF announced earlier liberating five villages in northeast of Shirqat and killing several militants hiding at houses there.

Soddy ISIS emir dies in al-Siniyah region

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have killed a Saudi-national Islamic State leader in Salahuddin province.

A statement by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said on Thursday, “troops of the sixth brigade managed to kill abu Abdul Rahman, an IS Saudi Emir, during attempt to infiltrate toward military units in al-Siniyah region.”

Earlier on the day, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy PMFs commander, said, “military operations carried out by the troops in cooperation with security services will take place through two stages; first one at western Shirqat, north of Tikrit, while the second at Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk.

Iraqi forces drive back ISIS attack

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces on Thursday repelled an attempt by Islamic State members to take over the road between Baghdad and Mosul.

A security source told Alghad Press that the army’s Counter-Terrorism Service forces countered sneaking IS members at al-Zawia crossroad. The source said the militants were attempting to take over the area to cut the Baghdad-Mosul road.

“CTS forces have managed to exterminate the sneaking group completely, and destroyed three vehicles,” said the source.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command said Thursday that major offensives were launching to retake Islamic State last bastions in Salahuddin’s Shirqat and Kirkuk’s Hawija. Other offensives had launched earlier this week at the group’s holdouts in western Anbar’s borders with Syria.

Federal Police, Rapid Response and the pro-government Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) are carrying out the attack, according to the command.

PMF media said its troops managed to take over four villages in the IS-held eastern side of Salahuddin’s Shirqat town, while Federal Police chief, Shaker Jawdat, said his troops recaptured three other villages after invading the town with tens of combat vehicles and troops.

Iraq hopes to eliminate Islamic State fighters who emerged in 2014 to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. So far, operations since October 2016 have managed to recapture Mosul, the group’s former capital, and the town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul.

...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
," he said during a speech at a dinner by the TÜRKEN Foundation in New York City.

Erdogan said activities in FETÖ schools had begun to be revealed.

"Our friends from the U.S. did not understand it [FETÖ activities] or do not want to understand. We see that. Theft in these schools is starting to slowly be revealed, being reported by the press and discussed by the public. I believe that our friends from the U.S. would see the real face of this organization in the not-so-distant future," he added.

Erdogan also said that some groups supported the spread of FETÖ’s lies due to hostility against him, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Turkey.

"The organization continues its black propaganda activities from both the U.S. and different areas across the world at full steam. Reality is an antidote of lies. There is no darkness that can resist the reality of sunlight," he added.

Erdogan and Trump are scheduled to meet at 10:00 p.m. in the Lotte New York Palace Hotel and make a joint statement, said sources from the presidency, who spoke on conditions of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Philadelphia finds hundreds of illegal voters
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Hundreds of noncitizens were registered to vote in Philadelphia over the last decade, and at least 90 of them actually ended up casting ballots that should never have been allowed, City Commissioner Al Schmidt said Wednesday, adding more fuel to complaints of bogus voting in U.S. elections.

The voters are all self-admitted noncitizens who went back and canceled their registrations later ‐ but not before casting illegal ballots a total of 227 times in elections in 2006 and 2007, Mr. Schmidt said.

He said most of those noncitizens signed up to vote at PennDOT, the state motor vehicles bureau, when they went to get a driver’s license. While legal residents and long-term visitors are allowed to hold licenses, they are not allowed to vote in federal elections ‐ yet thanks to a federal law, the sign-up for both licenses and voter registration is often tied together.

"The current voter registration process at PennDOT is both harmful to election integrity and to members of the immigrant community seeking citizenship," Mr. Schmidt said.

The data offers a boost to President Trump, who has claimed voters are tainted by noncitizens casting illegal ballots.

While Mr. Trump’s claims of millions of such votes have not been substantiated, Philadelphia’s data does show that fraudulent voting happens ‐ contradicting the claims of voting rights activists who said it is so rare as to not be worth investigating.

Iraq
2 Iraqi militia die removing mines in Diyala
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Seven members of the pro-government paramilitary forces fighting the Islamic State were killed and wounded in Diyala on Thursday after a booby-trap explosion.

A local source told Alghad Press that members of the Popular Mobilization Forces were inspecting a house in al-Boubakr village, at al-Udhaim, north of the province, preparing to hand it over to migrant families returning to the area.

4 Kidz die in mine attack near Hasakah

Hasakah (Syria News) A landmine explosion killed, on Wednesday, four children, in the countryside of Hasaka, local sources told Qasioun News.

The sources informed that four children were killed in the explosion of a land mine in Tal Hamis City in the countryside of Hasaka.

The government of Hasakah explained that a landmine, from the remains of the Islamic State, exploded while a number of children were playing in Tal Hamis area, northeast of Hasaka, killing four children.

Early this week, a child was killed and seven people were injured in a booby-trapped motorcycle explosion in al-Seyahi District, in the city of Qamishli, north of Hasakah.

30 families rescued in Salahuddin

Shirqat (IraqiNews.com) Paramilitary troops fighting Islamic State militants said Thursday they had rescued dozens of families in Salahuddin province as operations continue to militants’ havens.

Jabbar al-Maamouri, a senior leader at the Popular Mobilization Forces, told Alsumaria News that the troops managed to set free 30 families which the militants had tried to use as human shields as a military campaign seeks to retake the eastern side of the Islamic State-held town of Shirqat.

Maamouri said four defense lines set by IS had collapsed without resistance, while several villages were recaptured. He added that ten militants turned themselves in with security forces.

Iraqi government and paramilitary forces recaptured several villages on Thursday as the government launched a wide-scale, final operation to retake all of Islamic State’s remaining havens in Kirkuk and Salahuddin.

A BBA graduate from Darul Ihsan University, Mehedi had modelled for several years before joining New JMB in 2015. The 29-year-old was serving as the commander of ad-Dar-e-Kutni Brigade of New JMB when he was arrested.

Teen maidservant dies in Sanghar under mysterious circumstances
[DAWN] A teenage girl employed at the house of a local businessmen died under mysterious circumstances in Sanghar, police said on Thursday.

According to the dear departed's family, the girl died on Tuesday, September 19, at the house of a factory owner where she used to work as a maidservant.

The girl's brother has registered a murder case with Sanghar police against Seth Ratan ‐ the employer ‐ who has yet to be apprehended.

Mitho Bheel ‐ a human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
activist who is pursuing the victim's family’s case ‐ alleges that it is a case of murder but the medico-legal officer (MLO) had written it off as a suicide.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
police have started the paperwork but haven't done much else under Section 302 of the Pakistain Penal Code on the complaint of Senior Superintendent of Police Farrukh Lanjar, who nonetheless maintains that so far, it appears to be a case of suicide.

"According to the MLO, she was breathing when she was brought to the hospital with her neck bone broken," he said, while adding that the case will remain open and all possible scenarios will be taken into account.

He confirmed that no arrests have been made in the case as yet, adding that the suspects absconded after the FIR was registered against them.

According to SSP Lanjar, the evidence suggested that the girl wanted to marry her cousin but could not do so as the Bheel community does not allow consanguineal marriages, which could have led her to commit suicide.

He added that the MLO had refused to share the postmortem exam report with the police.

According to the SSP, the girl's father had dropped her off at Seth Ratan’s house in the morning as per routine.

[DAWN] A two-year-old girl in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) has been diagnosed with the polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
virus, the province's health department told DawnNews on Thursday.

The girl, who belongs to the Lakki Marwat district, had been vaccinated against polio this year. However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
her family decided to have her examined after they realised that one of her legs hurt.

Health officials say that though she has contracted virus, she will be able to walk normally thanks to her prior vaccination.

This is the first polio case that has emerged in KP this year. Last year, eight cases were reported from the province.

Africa North
Fighting intensifies in Sabratha
Tunis, 21 September 2017:

Fighting in Sabratha between the 48th Brigade along with its allies and the rival Anti-ISIS Operations Room (AIOR) intensified today after efforts yesterday by elders from Zawia and Zintan to broker a ceasefire collapsed. Both sides have blamed the other for the failure of the ceasefire, with each demanding that the other withdraw.

According to the Sabratha media centre, AIOR demanded that the 48th brigade withdraw to its headquarters and allow the national security directorate to take over the town centre. AIOR, however, is reported to have adamantly refused the same withdrawal request from the mediators. Instead it has accused the brigade of being allied to militants and being involved in people smuggling.

Its latest statement was that it would secure the town itself.

During in the day there were fresh attempts to mediate a new truce but this came against the background of bitter clashes in the centre of the town, included random rocket fire. According to Sabratha hospital, which says it is operating as best it can in the situation, it has received seven dead and 25 wounded since the clashes started five days ago.

In response to the situation, UNSMIL has called for an immediate end to hostilities and for the protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law. The head of Sabratha military council, however, has called on UNSMIL and other international organisations to step in and help move illegal immigrants from local detention centres.

For its part, the Red Crescent, which has evacuated a number of families from the town centre, has called for a safe corridor to be set up to allow others to leave.

The Libyan National Army’s western operations room has meanwhile come out in support of AIOR claiming that it is a unit of the LNA and that it is fighting the Muslim Brotherhood.

There are reports today that the LNA is mobilising forces in the area ahead of possible action in Sabratha.

Arabia
Houthi criticises Saudis, UAE in anniversary speech
[Al Jazeera] The leader of Yemen's Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
group has marked with a defiant speech the eve of the third anniversary of the day his fighters stormed into the capital Sanaa.

Appearing on the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV on Wednesday, Abdel-Malek al-Houthi criticised the Saudi-led coalition opposing his fighters, who control large expanses of territory and took Sanaa on what they consider the "September 21 revolution".

Houthi accused the US, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the UAE of seeking to divide Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
by working with local groups and the internationally recognised government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to seize control of territory controlled by his fighters.

"The Emiratis are the front for the Americans," Houthi said. "And today they are stealing Yemen’s natural gas, despite the suffering of the Yemeni people.

"There are a lot of islands today which have been handed over by the foreign agents and traitors of this country to the Emiratis, and they made bases on them, some of them shared bases with the Americans."

On Thursday, hundreds of thousands of Houthi supporters rallied in Sanaa.

Speaking from Sanaa, Hakim al-Masmai, editor of the Yemen Post, said that despite the size of the crowd, the absence of Houthi allies such as the party of President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, the former president, was conspicuous.

"This is a very clear division in Sanaa between the two allies at a time where the Houthis are gathering to show their strength after three years of Saudi-led air strikes," Masmari told Al Jazeera.

The Saudi-led coalition launched its air campaign against the Iran-allied Shia Houthi fighters in March 2015, and simultaneously enforced an air and sea blockade of Yemen.

"The Houthi fighters control about 30-40 percent of Yemen's territories," Masmari said.

"They are still powerful on the ground."

More than 10,000 civilians have been killed in the fighting.

China-Japan-Koreas
N Korea slams Trump as South approves aid
[Hurriyet Daily News] South Korea approved a plan yesterday to send $8 million worth of aid to North Korea, as China warned the crisis on the Korean peninsula was getting more serious by the day and the war of words between Pyongyang and Washington continued.

North Korea’s foreign minister likened U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
to a "barking dog" yesterday, after Trump warned he would "totally destroy" the North if it threatened the United States and its allies.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the situation on the Korean peninsula was getting more serious by the day and could not be allowed to spin out of control.

"We call on all parties to be calmer than calm and not let the situation escalate out of control," Wang said, according to a report from the state-run China News Service yesterday.

Meeting separately with his South Korean counterpart, Kang Kyung-wha, Wang reiterated a call for South Korea to remove the U.S.-built THAAD anti-missile system, which China says is a threat to its own security.

"China hopes South Korea will make efforts to reduce tension," a report on China’s official Xinhua news agency quoted Wang as saying.

The decision to send aid to North Korea was not popular in South Korea, hitting President Moon Jae-in’s approval rating. It also raised concerns in Japan and the United States, and followed new U.N. sanctions against North Korea over its sixth nuclear test earlier this month.

The South’s Unification Ministry said its aid policy remained unaffected by geopolitical tensions with the North. The exact timing of when the aid would be sent, as well as its size, would be confirmed later, the ministry said in a statement.

The South said it aimed to send $4.5 million worth of nutritional products for children and pregnant women through the World Food Programme and $3.5 million worth of vaccines and medicinal treatments through UNICEF.

India-Pakistan
Musharraf accuses Zardari of involvement in murders of Murtaza, Benazir Bhutto
[DAWN] Former president Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
on Thursday directly accused PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari of being complicit in Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
's liquidation, reasoning he had "the most to gain from [it]", in a bombshell statement posted to his party's social media page.

"Asif Ali Zardari is responsible for the Bhutto family's demise. He was involved in the deaths of Benazir and Murtaza Bhutto," Musharraf said in a video posted to his official Facebook page.

The retired general said he was speaking out because he "could not tolerate" the fact that Zardari had recently directly accused him of being responsible for the murder.

Saying that he wanted to directly address the three Bhutto-Zardari children, the Bhutto family and the people of Sindh, Musharraf argued: "Every time there is a murder, the first thing that needs to be seen is who has the most to gain from the death. In this case, I had everything to lose as I was in power and the murder put my government in a difficult situation," he said.

"There was just one person who had everything to gain from Benazir's liquidation, and that was Asif Ali Zardari," he continued, proceeding into what he termed as his 'analysis' of the case.

"Zardari was in power for five years: why did he not look into the case? Why was the investigation not active? [That is] because he was involved in Benazir's murder."

Going further, Musharraf said: "The evidence is clear that Baitullah Mehsud and his people were involved in the murder; but who had asked them to target Benazir Bhutto? It could not have been me ‐ the group hated me, and the feeling was mutual."

"It is a known fact that I wanted Mehsud dead ‐ so did the Government of Pakistain ‐ after his group had attempted to kill me," Musharraf revealed.

"Zardari, on the other hand, had a great relationship with former Afghan president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...A product, probably the sole product, of the Southern Alliance...
‐ a link he could have used to influence Mehsud and his people," he said.

Rather than outright cutting off China's exports, I would encourage industry here and in other countries to undermine China by a steady shift towards all other trade partners (5-10% a year would rapidly squeeze their economy).

However I'm afraid none of your suggested strategic steps will be enacted. The governing class is too busy destroying any greatness left in this country to take external threats seriously. [IsraelTimes] Mehdi Nemmouche, alleged killer of four in 2014 attack, has been in solitary confinement without trial for three years

The lawyer of a Frenchie accused of shooting dead four people at a Jewish Museum in Belgium says his client may have a brain tumor and is being denied medical treatment.
According to various cadaver studies done over the years, about 20% of us will die with an undiagnosed, symptom-free tumour in our brains, so the odds are good that Mr. Nemmouche's lawyer is both correct and raising a non-issue.
Mehdi Nemmouche is suspected of gunning down the four with an assault weapon in the Brussels museum in May 2014. He has been in solitary confinement without trial for three years.
It doesn't matter whether or not a brain tumour exists -- his brain has already turned to mush and dribbled out of his ears.
Lawyer Sebastien Courtoy said Thursday that a medical expert believes Nemmouche should have medical tests and scans. Courtoy said his client is going blind and deaf but that the prison is refusing treatment.

Courtoy said Nemmouche is incapable of attending or following a trial. No trial is likely before September 2018.

He said: "There won’t be a Nemmouche trial. There’ll be a sham Nemmouche trial."

On May 24, 2014, Nemmouche is believed to have opened fire in the entrance hall of the museum in the center of the Belgian capital, killing two Israeli tourists, a French volunteer and a Belgian museum receptionist.

The museum reopened four months later under heavy security.

Nemmouche was incarcerated

six [days] after the attack in the southern French port city of Marseille and sent to Belgium two months later, where he faces trial at an unspecified date in the future. He was arrested during a routine customs inspection with a bag full of weapons similar to the ones used at the museum.

Nemmouche, who is believed to have fought with Islamists in Syria, was under surveillance by French and Belgian security services, according to prosecutors in both countries. French authorities have identified him as one of the jihadists who kept four French journalists hostage until they were freed in April 2014 in Syria.

The MGK was supposed to meet on Sept. 27 but has been brought forward to Sept. 22 in order to allow Turkey’s top civilian and military officials to ponder over actions to be taken against the KRG’s referendum.

In a statement in New York, Erdogan said the sanctions Turkey will impose will not be "ordinary" but did not give details. He also informed that the cabinet will convene on the same day in order to register advisory decisions of the MGK as the official rules.

Along with Erdogan, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, deputy prime ministers, defense and foreign ministers as well as Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar, all force commanders and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) head Hakan Fidan will join the MGK meeting.

Turkey and the KRG have developed a bilateral political, economic and energy relationship in the last 10 years after the latter has been designated as an autonomous region under the new Iraqi constitution. The trade volume between the two has exceeded $8 billion as Turkey intensified its oil trade with the autonomous region despite Baghdad’s opposition. The Habur border gate on the Turkey-Iraq line is one of the busiest border gates in the region.

Iraq
Abadi: Operation launched to retake Hawija from ISIL
[Al Jazeera] Iraq's prime minister says government forces have begun the operation to retake the town of Hawija from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIS) group.

In a statement released by his office, Haider al-Abadi said the operation began at dawn on Thursday, just two days after Iraqi forces began an offensive against ISIS holdouts in the western Anbar province.

"We announce the launch of the first phase of the liberation of Hawija, in fulfilment of our pledge to our people to liberate all Iraqi territory and to cleanse it from the terrorist ISIS gangs," Abadi said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Abadi praised his forces, who were "fighting more than one liberation battle at the same time and winning victory after victory", adding that "a new victory" was looming.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid, speaking from Sulaimaniyah city in Iraq's Kurdish region, said that up to 2,000 ISIS fighters were estimated to be in Hawija.

"Some have argued that Hawija should have been dealt with before the djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
offensive as there's a sizeable number of ISIS fighters - estimated between a 1,500 to 2,000. And that the Hawija district has actually acted as a rear base for the ISIS fighters, somewhere where they could have retreated safely," she said.

The offensive started from the northwest and the southwest of Hawija district, she said.

"It is going to take a while because the area is full of small villages and it's quite vast and porous. So they will have to try to encircle Hawija town before they are able to get into it."

Iraqi forces capture Kop Shop in Annah

Annah (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army and security forces recaptured on Thursday the police station of one of Islamic State’s last three bastions in western Anbar as the government embarked on a wide-scale campaign to clear the group’s last havens in the country.

A security source told Alghad Press that forces took over the police station of Annah, besides the fire brigade unit and an oil station.

“Advances continue but with utmost caution,” said the source.

Iraqi forces capture Annah

Annah (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces on Thursday completely took over the town of Annah, one of Islamic State’s last three strongholds in Anbar’s western borders with Syria, military media said.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said army forces, backed by the Popular Mobilization Forces, the paramilitary force fighting IS alongside the government, took over the town, just two days after operations launched.

Iraqi army forces invaded Annah on Wednesday, hours after recapturing neighboring Rayhana area. Military and paramilitary sources said the troops, backed by the Popular Mobilization Forces, regained control over a number of neighborhoods in the town. Military media said up to 30 militants were killed since offensives launched.

ISIS Big Turban dies defending Annah

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A senior Islamic State leader was killed on Thursday in west of Anbar, a security source was quoted saying.

“Joint troops managed to kill an IS field leader known as Mostafa Anwar Nayef at al-Shishan district in Annah town, west of Anbar,” the source told Alghad Press.

A source told the website earlier on the day that troops invaded the district, which is the largest in Annah.

In related news, Iraqi army announced the total recapture of the town, invaded on Wednesday, hours after recapturing neighboring Rayhana area.

According to military media, up to 30 militants were killed since offensives launched.

On Saturday, Iraqi joint troops liberated Akashat region, between Rutba town, on borders with Jordan, and Qaim, on borders with Syria.

Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa have been held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic “Caliphate”. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them in 2015 and 2016.

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command declared the start of offensives to retake IS-held regions in Salahuddin and Kirkuk provinces.

6 killed, 20 injured by 'unprovoked Indian firing' across Working Boundary in Sialkot
[DAWN] At least six people, including four women, were killed and 20 others injured near the Working Boundary in Sialkot on Thursday as Indian forces "resorted to unprovoked firing of mortars targeting civilians", local administration and the army's media wing said.

Earlier, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had said that four people were killed by firing and mortar shelling in the village of Bini Sulariyan in the Charwah sector.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Farrukh Naveed told DawnNews that the number of dead had risen to six people, who he identified as Mariam Mahmood, Mariam Ishaq, Nafees Bibi, Khursheed Bibi, Ashraf Mansoor and Imran Ghani.

At least 20 people were also injured in the cross-border firing and shelling in the Harpal, Sajeetgarh and Charwah sectors, he said, adding that Indian forces have been targeting civilians in the area for the past week.

Iraq
Iraqi forces captures 20 villages in Hawija
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi joint troops have managed to recapture twenty villages from Islamic State’s grip, in Hawija, Kirkuk, concluding the first phase of the offensive, military said.

“Federal Police, Rapid Response, army brigades and al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces), liberated twenty villages in Hawija,” Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of Hawija Operations, said on Thursday.

According to Yarallah, Iraqi troops managed to conclude the first phase of operations, which started early on the day.

During a joint press conference with Ryan Dillon, spokesman of the U.S.-led coalition against IS, on Thursday, Brig. Gen. Yahia Rasoul, spokesman of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said the number of Islamic State members in Hawija falls between 800 and 1500.

Earlier on the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and Lt.Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, deputy commander of the Joint Operations Command announced launch of first phase of operations to liberate Hawija and western Shirqat. Several villages in Shirqat have been retaken.

Hawija and other neighboring regions, west of Kirkuk, have been held by IS since mid-2014, when the group emerged to proclaim an Islamic “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria.

Other offensives were launched earlier this week at the group’s havens in western Anbar’s borders with Syria.

Erdogan did not claim Trump apologized for Washington brawl: Spokesperson
[Hurriyet Daily News] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

did not claim that U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
apologized to him over a brawl involving Ottoman Turkish security officers, Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin stated on Sept. 21.

"President Erdogan didn’t say President Trump ’apologized’ to him but he said he was ’saddened’ by what happened. That is the correct translation," Kalin said in a tweet.

Following a translated interview with Erdogan, U.S. TV show PBS NewsHour reported that the Ottoman Turkish president had said Trump had "said he was sorry" for the incident in May, in which Erdogan’s security detail brawled with protesters outside the Ottoman Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington.

The Sept. 19 report prompted the White House to deny that Trump had made such an apology during a telephone call between the leaders.

Following the May 16 confrontation during Erdogan’s previous visit to the U.S., a grand jury indicted 19 people, including 15 Ottoman Turkish security guards.

Erdogan condemned the indictment after it was announced earlier this month, saying "it is clearly a scandalous sign of how justice works in America."

Grenade attack on minister kills three in India-held Kashmir
[DAWN] Three were killed and at least 20 others were maimed on Thursday when suspected holy warriors fired a grenade at the motorcade of a local politician in India-held Kashmire, police said.

The attack occurred as Nayeem Akhtar, a local government minister, was passing through the southern town of Tral. Akhtar, however, escaped unhurt.

"Three non-combatants were killed in the attack. We are investigating," director general of police S.P. Vaid told AFP, adding it appeared a grenade launcher was used to fire the explosive.

At least 20 people, including 10 government forces personnel, were also injured in the blast, he added.

At least 140 armed myrmidons, including some senior commanders, have been killed since the start of the year by government forces.

One injured in gun battle at Istanbul courthouse, police detain 20
[Hurriyet Daily News] At least one person was injured on Sept. 21 when a shootout broke out between rival gangs at Istanbul’s Caglayan courthouse.

The shootout broke out between the opposite sides of a murder trial, which was ongoing at the 10th High Criminal Court at the complex.

An injured person, only identified with the initials K.G., was taken to the hospital by medical teams. A child was also taken to the hospital, but it was unclear if it was a case of shock or physical injury.

Some 20 people in connection to the armed clash were detained while a brawl also erupted during the police intervention. Reinforcements and a police helicopter were also deployed to the scene.

Those detained were reportedly members of two rival gangs that have also had festivities in the past.

Police are searching for anyone else involved in the fracas.

K.G. was reportedly being tried without arrest in the case of a murder committed eight months ago in the Gaziosmanpasa district.

Caglayan courthouse, one of the largest in the country, was at the center of a major incident in March 2015 when members of the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) seized and killed a prosecutor, Mehmet Selim Kiraz.

French Socialists forced to sell off Paris HQ after election debacles
Flung upon the ash heap of history, poor dears.
[TheLocal.fr] The party has been based on the Rue de Solferino in the chic Seventh Arrondissement of the capital since 1981 when ex-leader Francois Mitterrand was elected the first Socialist president under the current constitution.

Thirty-six years later, the party is fighting for survival after its debacle in the presidential election in May and a humiliating score in parliamentary elections in June, when President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party swept the board.

The decision to sell was made Tuesday evening by party leaders, with press reports saying the building, at 3,000 square metres (32,000 square feet), could raise 40 to 70 million euros ($50-85 million).

"It's a difficult decision because this place is symbolic," party treasurer Jean-Francois Debat told news hounds.

"It's based on two considerations. Firstly it's obvious there are financial constraints. It's also a political choice to prepare for the future."

In the presidential election in May, the party's candidate Benoit Hamon finished fifth with a score of just 6.36 percent after a campaign in which many party leaders defected to Macron's centrist political movement.

In the parliamentary elections a month later, the number of Socialist politicians fell by more than 250 to just 30, leaving the party facing major financial problems after five years in power under ex-president Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
French political parties rely on both private donations and public subsidies which are paid on the basis of the number of their elected representatives.

After the parliamentary debacle, Socialist party chief Jean-Christophe Cambadelis resigned, leaving the movement rudderless and unable to make an impact in the first few months of Macron's rule.
