Exclusive: Rod Rosenstein is resigning
[Axios] Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has verbally resigned to Chief of Staff John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by President Trump, according to a source with direct knowledge. Per a second source with direct knowledge: "He’s expecting to be fired," so he plans to step down.

Background: Rosenstein talked last year about invoking the 25th Amendment and wearing a wire during Trump meetings, the N.Y. Times' Adam Goldman and Michael S. Schmidt reported last week. He denied both allegations.
Update at 11:45 a.m. EDT, courtesy of Fred: MSN also has the story, which they will be updating as it develops, so check here.

#5  The Justice Department's rules of succession dictate that Solicitor General Noel Francisco would be next in line to take over for Rosenstein.

Francisco's track record as a lawyer mirrors Trump's rhetoric against intelligence authorities, with cases that include rebukes of the FBI and a defense of executive authority.

Hopefully.

#16  Maybe not. Update: The Wall Street Journal’s take sounds more like a firing, given that discussions were taking place “all weekend” at the White House:
Mr. Rosenstein has not submitted his resignation, the person said.
The situation remained fluid, however, as another person familiar with the matter said Mr. Rosenstein is expected to resign, and that discussions have been underway about his departure all weekend. …
Mr. Rosenstein had disputed those assertions on Friday. In a statement released that day, he said, “I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false.”

It was a Plot
[BizPacReview] A Democratic operative and former Clinton White House official who is now an advisor to Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser, predicted a "strategy" to defeat the US Supreme Court nominee months ago.
Who could have seen that coming?
Ricki Seidman spoke about a plot to take down Kavanaugh in a conference call with the American Constitution Society in July, suggesting a "strategy will emerge" that would destroy the nomination of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick.

"I do think that over the coming days and weeks there will be a strategy that will emerge, and I think it’s possible that strategy might ultimately defeat the nominee," Seidman said in audio that was recorded by the Republican National Committee’s War Room. "And whether or not it ultimately defeats the nominee it will, I think, help people understand why it’s so important that they vote."

The timing of the call in the audio coincides with Ford’s delivery of a letter to Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in July alleging the assault by Kavanaugh
Seidman, who advised Anita Hill to testify against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas in 1991, has also had a long history working with Democrats.

According to her bio at TSD Communications where she is a senior principal, Seidman "took a leave of absence in 2008 to work for President Obama’s general election campaign, serving as Vice President Joe Biden’s communications director. In the spring and summer of 2009, she assisted the White House in the successful confirmation effort for President Obama’s first nominee to the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor."

During the Clinton Administration, she served as White House Deputy Communications Director, Counselor to the Chief of Staff, and Director of Scheduling and Advance for the President as well as later serving as Deputy Associate Attorney General in the Department of Justice.

Seidman "cut her teeth running attack ads against Robert Bork, a nomination that was eventually derailed. She then moved to Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy’s office, where she was instrumental in convincing Anita Hill to go public with her claim that Clarence Thomas sexually harassed her," The Daily Caller reported.

Democrats may deny there is a plot to destroy Kavanaugh’s nomination ‐ and his reputation in the process ‐ but the audio clip reveals the real strategies as Seidman is now advising Ford in the political smear campaign.

"This feels more like a Democratic super PAC than a legal effort to get at the truth," a senior Republican official told Politico.

"If you’re concerned about an appearance of partisanship, hiring a Democratic operative with a history of smearing conservative judges doesn’t exactly mitigate that," RNC press secretary, Cassie Smedile, said.

Biden Predicts Dems Capture House, Senate; Floats Harris, Booker as 2020 Contenders
[PJMedia] WASHINGTON ‐ Former Vice President Joe Biden predicted that Democrats will win the majority in both chambers of Congress in the midterm election.

"We're going to win back the United States House of Representatives, I promise you. And I predict we'll win back the Senate, too," he said during an interview at the Biden Cancer Summit on Friday alongside his wife, Jill Biden.

When Mrs. Biden was asked how she would react if her husband said he wanted to run for president in 2020, she replied, "I would say, Joe, you would make a great president but let’s think about it."

When asked if he wants to run for president, Biden replied, "No, I desperately want to change the landscape and there is more than one way to do it. I'm looking for someone; there's a lot of really talented people we have out there: Kamala Harris, you’ve got Cory Booker, you’ve got the former mayor of Massachusetts. You have a lot of talented people." Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has been floated as a 2020 contender.

He continued, "But we have to stop this degradation of the system that's going on. That's why I'm campaigning all over the country. I'm campaigning for candidates because we have to build a berm out there."

Biden was also asked if he would regret not running in 2020. He declined running in 2016 as his son Beau had recently passed away.

Russia to supply Syria with S-300 anti-missile system
[Ynet] Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Monday that Moscow will supply an S-300 anti-missile system to Syria within two weeks, following the downing of the Ilyushin IL-20 by the Syrian forces, who tried to repel an IAF attack.

The anti-aircraft unit will reportedly be equipped with Russian tracking and guidance systems, and is intended to "calm down some hotheads" whose actions "pose a threat to our troops," according to Shoigu.
To paraphrase Miles Vorkosigan, "Are you challenging our ingenuity, Ivan?"

Editor of Philosophy Journal Fired for Saying Women Don't Have Penises
[PJ] Not even atheist humanists are safe from the long, punishing arms of the transgender mafia. Recently, Angelos Sofocleous was fired from his job at Durham University's philosophy journal Critique for retweeting a tweet that fellow students called "transphobic." The tweet in question included a link to an article from the Spectator called "Is it a crime to say 'women don't have penises'?" The article is about women's activists who had police called on them for placing stickers saying as much around their city in protest of men usurping women's rights.

In a typical 2018 overreaction, Sofocleous's retweet of that article caused great gnashing of teeth and loud weeping in the outrage corners of the internet. As a result, Sofocleous was dismissed from his position at the Durham publication and forced to resign as president-elect of the Humanist Students group. "Humanists," Sofocleous told PJM, "strive to have a rational and logical approach in life, and face issues with evidence and claims, not with belief and faith. As such, humanists have trust in the scientific method, which they believe to be the only source of truth in the world."

Strangely, the extremely scientific fact that women do not have ‐ and have never had ‐ penises didn't seem to sway the humanist students toward rational thought. They kicked Sofocleous right out of their sphere. Criticisms of Sofocleous were swift and mostly unintelligible. Responding to Sofocleous's true statement that engaging in debate does not mean your opponent has equal moral status, a writer at the ironically named "Freethoughtblogs" wrote:

Fed hikes give cash appeal; stocks no longer only game in town
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve’s anticipated interest rate hike this week will make cash the most attractive it has been in about a decade and end the era of stocks as the only game in town.

During this bull market which in August broke the record as the longest ever, interest rates were so low that most fixed income assets other than junk bonds yielded less than the inflation rate or the dividend yield on the S&P 500. This drove yield-hungry investors to stocks, the one asset that delivered a real rate of return, or return on investment adjusted for inflation.

"One of the big influences in the market over the last decade has been that bonds as an alternative have been pretty much out of the market," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Wealth Advisors in Chicago.

"There is historically a tug of war between stock investing and bond investing and since the financial crises the bond market has been in the tug of war with one arm tied behind its back," he said.

Lindsey Graham awakens to 'Bureaucratic Coup' Against President Trump
[Breitbart] On this weekend’s broadcast of "Fox News Sunday," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said The New York Times’ story that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein considered invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump was more proof there is a "bureaucratic coup" against the president.

Graham said, "He shouldn’t fire Rosenstein unless you believe Rosenstein’s lying, he said he didn’t do the things alleged. But there’s a bureaucratic coup against President Trump being discovered here. Before the election, the people in question tried to taint the election, tip it Clinton’s favor, after the election they’re trying to undermine the President. I don’t know what Rosenstein did, but I know what McCabe or Page and Strzok did. They tried to destroy this president. If Rosenstein’s involved, he should be fired, if he’s not involved then leave him alone."

Graham is, along with McCain, a classic war-mongering chicken hawk. If he turns around, great. But, he is a politician (and a lawyer) after all...two strikes against him right there.

Half of Americans Live in Fear – They're Called Men
[Townhall] If this outrageous 36-year-old claim by a leftist, anti-Trump marching, California psychology professor
I don't think calling somebody "California psychology professor" in public is quite genteel - even if true. Aren't there alternate terms that can convey the same information without verging on obscenity?
against Judge Kavanaugh is treated like truth, the p*ssy hat posse will begin a reign of terror that will destroy the careers, families, and futures of many innocent men. No male will be safe if this travesty is allowed to stand. All the usual restraints of the rule of law that protect the accused will be trampled by #metoo mob rule ‐ the Furies will run wild.

Equally terrible, the claims of women who have actually been raped and abused will be forever stained because the Democrats are using Ford’s story as a bludgeon to beat a good man off the Supreme Court bench. We will be back to where we were when women’s legitimate abuse accounts were likely to be disbelieved. And moving into a bizarre arena where every man will need a chaperone along to protect his honor should he dare to attempt actually dating a woman.
Haven't you heard - men should not date women unless, of course, they're transgendered 'women'?

There is a very left-wing political activist part of the population of women who are wingy, dingy and difficult terrorists. Stay clear of them; they will make your life hell.

The Diverse Hatreds of the Democrats
[SultanKnish] On Saturday, the Human Rights Campaign, the country's top gay rights lobby, held its 22nd annual dinner. Top speakers included Joe Biden, who bemoaned the lack of acceptance for gay people, Anne Hathaway, who shrieked, "Let’s tear this world apart and build a better one", and Obama's Attorney General, Eric Holder, who declared, "The age of bullies and bigots is not fully behind us".

Holder would know. He was last seen posing with Louis Farrakhan at Aretha Franklin's funeral. The leader of the Nation of Islam is both a bigot and a bully. He also loathes gay people.

...At the 2018 Black Press conference sponsored by the NNPA, which had previously honored Senator Kamala Harris, the First Place Feature Writing Award went to a Final Call article, "The Feminization of Black Men" which quoted Farrakhan’s claims that drugs were being used to turn black men gay.

...Identity politics nationalism is based on a thousand clashing convictions of the superiority of the group and the inferiority of outsiders. Every identity politics group has its own Farrakhan, the ’extremist’ who is popular within that group because he preaches its total superiority and the inferiority of the ’Other’.

...The left killed liberalism, tolerance and coexistence. What’s waiting in the wings is Farrakhan

...Farrakhan’s message of "empowerment" is the same as Hitler’s. It lays out a vision of a naturally superior people being oppressed by their racial inferiors through trickery and cunning. The NNPA awarded an article whose rhetoric echoes Nazi Germany’s Goebbels almost word for word.

...Meanwhile the NNPA, an organization that includes a racist paper put out by a racist hate group, is sponsored by Ford, GM, Bill Gates, AT&T, MillerCoors, the AARP, Coca Cola, Macy's, Toyota, VW, Pfizer, Wells Fargo and many other major corporations and organizations. Racism is big business once again.

Major corporations have gotten behind racism and anti-Semitism because the Democrats have.
And because the changes in American educational system mean their position won't be challenged by innovators.

The Dems are into a divide and conquer strategy. Divide the various groups and pit them against each other. IMO, that ship has sailed long ago although the legacy Obumble left behind was damaging.

I'd recommend to Hathway: Go out and build a better world. You don't have to tear apart the existing one.

Want To Make Federal Employees Easier To Fire?
h/t Gates of Vienna
[TrevorLoudon] Project Veritas just released its latest undercover video, "Unmasking the Deep State." This first video focuses on a State Department employee who is both a poster child for the Deep State and a perfect example of why the federal bureaucracy needs serious reform. Providentially, there is new legislation being considered in Congress that would do just that: the Merit Act (H.R. 559).

The Merit Act would greatly streamline the process for firing employees who are poor performers, insubordinate, or otherwise engaged in misconduct. Since the election of President Trump, the bureaucracy, including numerous holdovers from the Obama administration, has been engaged in an unprecedented level of obstruction, leaks, and sabotage. These bad actors call it "resistance." FBI and Department of Justice misconduct in the Trump-Russia probe and the Clinton email scandal is only the most visible component.

This is nothing new. President Bush faced similar resistance from the bureaucracy, and going as far back as 1986, the Reagan administration had to contend with a State Department relentlessly working to derail his foreign policy. In the intervening period, we have been treated to stories of almost incomprehensible incompetence and corruption in the federal bureaucracy.

...We have been treated to two years of in-your-face government behaving badly, but it didn’t start then. We have a rare opportunity to fix a major problem that has been festering for decades. Only now, when Congress is controlled by the GOP,and we have a president who is willing to do the heavy lifting on controversial issues, do we have a chance. We cannot afford to squander it.

Iran-backed militias accused of reign of fear in Iraqi Basra
[IsraelTimes] Beatings and arbitrary arrests reported amid growing public protests over Iranian influence and crumbling public services.

Hajar Youssif, an Iraqi activist and volunteer medic who was kidnapped, beaten and threatened for attending protests, believes the attack was part of what she and other activists describe as a campaign of intimidation and arbitrary detentions by powerful Iranian-backed Shiite militias and political groups that control Basra, a city of more than 2 million people in southern Iraq’s Shiite Moslem heartland.

Angry Basra residents have repeatedly taken to the streets in recent weeks to protest failing government services, including water contamination that sent thousands to hospitals.

FOX'S Chris Wallace: All 10 Senate Judiciary Dems Refused Interviews for 2nd Week
[Daily Caller] "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace said Sunday that all 10 Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats refused invitations to appear on his show ‐ for the second week in a row ‐ to discuss the allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Wallace spoke to Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham about the ongoing back and forth between the attorneys for Blasey Ford and Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who most recently claimed he felt like he was "playing 2nd trombone in the judiciary orchestra."

But just before Wallace introduced Graham, he took a swing at the 10 Democrats on that committee who had opted not to appear on his program.

"We should note for the second week in a row we invited all 10 committee Democrats to join us, and for the second week, none of them accepted," he said. "And with that, Senator Graham, welcome back to ’Fox News Sunday.'"

Graham responded with a laugh, saying, "You must be mean."

"Or they don’t want to talk ..." Wallace quipped.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Pro-Turkey Syria Rebels Cautiously Accept Idlib Deal
[AnNahar] Pro-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
rebels have cautiously accepted a Moscow-Ankara deal to prevent a Russia-backed regime attack on Syria's last major opposition bastion of Idlib, while a small jihadist group has rejected it.

The dominant force in the northwestern region bordering Turkey, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS) alliance led by jihadists of Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate, had on Sunday however still not responded.

Late Saturday, the National Liberation Front (NLF)
...the alliance formed and commanded by Turkey, whose largest segment is the Islamist group Harakat Ahrar al-Sham...
rebel alliance in a statement accepted the deal reached on Monday for Idlib, but said they remained on their guard.

They announced "our full cooperation with our Ottoman Turkish ally in helping to make a success their efforts to spare civilians from the afflictions of war."

"But we will stay alert to any betrayal by the Russians, the regime or the Iranians," the NLF warned, fearing the agreement to be "temporary."

"We will not abandon our weapons, our land or our revolution" against the Russia- and Iran-backed forces of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
, the rebels said.

Also on Saturday, in a statement circulated on social media, the al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Deen rejected the agreement reached in the Russian resort of Sochi.

"We at the Hurras al-Deen organization again announce our rejection of these conspiracies," it said.

Monday's agreement provides for a U-shaped buffer zone 15 to 20 kilometres (9 to 12 miles) wide to be set up around Idlib.

Under the deal, all factions in the planned demilitarised zone must hand over their heavy weapons by October 10, and radical groups must withdraw by October 15.

Both the hard boy Hurras al-Deen and NLF rebels are present inside this planned buffer area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.

But the dominant HTS alliance is also widely present, according to the Britannia-based monitor.

The jihadist-led group -- which controls more than half of the Idlib region -- has not officially responded to the agreement.

But its propaganda agency Ebaa has cast doubt on Turkey's motivations.

In August, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani warned opposition factions in Idlib against handing over their weapons.

Syria's war has killed more than 360,000 people and displaced millions from their homes since erupting in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-Assad protests.

Government
Congress To Regulate Shrinking Airline Seats?
[Hot Air] Back in June, we looked at an FAA Inspector General’s report which suggested that the smaller and smaller airline seats we’re being jammed into presented a possible safety hazard. By law, commercial airliners are supposed to be able to be evacuated in 90 seconds in the event of an emergency. Recent incidents revealed that was taking two and a half minutes or more with a fully packed flight. The IG directed the FAA to take a fresh look at the issue, leading some to believe that the FAA was finally about to restore some legroom on airline flights.

Well, the FAA blew off the report and nothing was changed. Dealing with the growing chorus of complaints from travelers, it now appears that Congress is going to step in and do something about it whether it involves a safety issue or not. (Detroit News)

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Danske Bank CEO quits in a $234 billion money laundering scandal
[CNBC] Danske Bank's chief executive Thomas Borgen quit on Wednesday in a money laundering scandal which involved 200 billion euros ($234 billion) flowing through its Estonian branch between 2007 and 2015, most of which was suspicious.

"It is clear that Danske Bank has failed to live up to its responsibility in the case of possible money laundering in Estonia. I deeply regret this," Borgen said in a statement which detailed failings in compliance, communication and controls.

Regulators and the financial community will scrutinise the Danske Bank report, which follows calls by Brussels for a new European Union watchdog to crack down on financial crime after a series of scandals involving anti-money laundering controls.

A third of Danske Bank's stock market value has been wiped out in the last six months, mainly driven by concerns over a possible inquiry by U.S. authorities and the penalties this could entail.

Danske Bank said its investigation into the affair concluded that Borgen, Chairman Ole Andersen and the board of directors "did not breach their legal obligations towards Danske Bank."

While Danske said it was not able to provide an accurate estimate of the suspicious transactions through its Estonian branch, it said the non-resident portfolio included customers from Russia, Azerbeijan, Ukraine and other ex-Soviet states.

The report found that Danske Bank failed to take proper action in 2007 when it was criticised by the Estonian regulator and received information from its Danish counterpart that pointed to "criminal activity in its pure form, including money laundering" estimated at "billions of roubles monthly".

And when a whistleblower raised problems at the Estonian branch in early 2014 the allegations were not properly investigated and were not shared with the board, Danske said.

While it took measures to get its Estonian business under control in 2014, these were insufficient, the report said.

Danske Bank also said it had decided not to migrate its Baltic banking activities onto its IT platform, because it would be too expensive. Accordingly, the Estonian branch did not employ Danske's anti-money laundering procedures.

U.S. authorities earlier this year accused Latvia's ABLV of covering up money laundering and the bank was promptly denied U.S. dollar funding, leading to its collapse.

While Danske does not have a banking licence in the United States, banning U.S. correspondent banks from dealing with it would amount to shutting it out of the global financial network.

The bank, whose shares fell as much as 5 percent following the release of the report, also lowered its expectations for annual net profit to 16-17 billion Danish crowns, from a previous range of 18-20 billion.

Low Energy Jeb: Americans Urging for Immigration Controls ‘Threatened' by ‘Less White' Country
[Breitbart] Failed 2016 presidential candidate and former Florida governor Jeb Bush says Americans who are urging for immigration controls are "threatened" by their perception that the United States is "changing" and becoming "less white."

In a podcast interview with National Review Editor Nordlinger, Bush said immigration controls were "foolhardy" and that illegal alien crime gets too much attention compared to crimes committed by American citizens.

Bush said:
Our party is advocating restricting legal immigration as well. And I think that’s foolhardy beyond belief. There’s a way to reform the legal immigration system that would be a catalyst for sustained economic growth and we need it because our demography is going the wrong way. [Emphasis added]

There are quite a few people that have a larger megaphone if you will that seem either threatened by what they perceive to be a changing country that is less white perhaps ... basically, there’s a concern that we’ve lost our way and immigrants are kind of easy to single out with vitriol. [Emphasis added]

There’s examples of cable news shows that talk about an illegal immigrant or a legal immigrant that commits an atrocious crime, murder, family loses their loved one and that seems to get a lot more attention than crime throughout America. [Emphasis added]

Since the late 1960’s, immigration to the U.S. has surged from some of the most impoverished and dangerous regions of the world, including Mexico, Central America, and the Middle East.

Legal immigration to the U.S. from Islamic nations, for example, including Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Somalia has skyrocketed since 2010. Immigration from Afghanistan to the U.S. has increased 84 percent in the last seven years.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
New Yorker: Brett Kavanaugh Exposed Himself at Freshman Party; Kavanaugh Denies
[Breitbart] The New Yorker reported a new accusation Sunday evening against Judge Brett Kavanaugh: that as a college freshman at Yale University, a drunken Kavanaugh "exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party," and that when she tried to push him away in her drunken condition she accidently touched his penis.

The article, by Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer, comes hours after Christine Balsey Ford agreed to testify Thursday about an allegation that Kavanaugh groped her in high school.

Kavanaugh denies the allegation, in a statement reported by the New Yorker: "This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen. The people who knew me then know that this did not happen, and have said so. This is a smear, plain and simple. I look forward to testifying on Thursday about the truth, and defending my good name‐and the reputation for character and integrity I have spent a lifetime building‐against these last-minute allegations." The White House called it "the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats designed to tear down a good man."

Farrow and Mayer admit that Deborah Ramirez, the woman making the accusation, acknowledges being drunk at the party where she alleges the incident occurred, and that "her memories contained gaps." They also note: "The New Yorker has not confirmed with other eyewitnesses that Kavanaugh was present at the party. The magazine contacted several dozen classmates of Ramirez and Kavanaugh regarding the incident. Many did not respond to interview requests; others declined to comment, or said they did not attend or remember the party."

*snicker* I’ve been to a few parties like that. An interesting experience when one is sober. But there will be those who believe with the fury of a thousand suns, despite teh New Yorker being unable to confirm that Mr. Kavanaugh was actually there. Still, I suspect more will find themselves sceptical than did before.

Rouhani: Iran ready to confront US, 'small mercenary states'
[PRESSTV] President Hassan Rouhani says the United States wants to cause insecurity in Iran with the help of "small mercenary states" in the region, but that the Islamic Theocratic Republic is ready to confront them.

Rouhani's remarks in Tehran Sunday before leaving for New York to attend the UN General Assembly came a day after holy warriors attacked a military parade in Ahvaz in southwest Iran, killing 25 people.

"Americans want Iran to have no security. They want to create chaos and turmoil and set the conditions so that they can return to the country one day and take charge as they did in the old days, but none of these is possible," the president said.

"These are unattainable dreams and America will never achieve any of these goals," Rouhani added.

He touched on Washington's hostile policies toward Iran, including its withdrawal from an international nuclear deal with Tehran under "delusional excuses," putting a nation under strain.

"Our people will resist and the government has prepared itself for this confrontation," he said, adding that everyone will "join hands to put these difficult times behind us with the grace of God."

"The Americans will regret what they did because they made a very wrong choice", the president added.

Trump wants UN to serve American interests: Analyst
[PRESSTV] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s recent criticism of the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
is not surprising because he represents the view that the world body must serve US foreign policy, says an analyst in Virginia.

Keith Preston, editor of the Attackthesystem.org made the remarks on Sunday, after Trump criticized the UN ahead of his address to the annual gathering of world leaders at the General Assembly next week.

In a video message on his Twitter page, Trump said Saturday that the UN has "tremendous potential" but has "not lived up to that potential."

Trump is set to address the General Assembly on Tuesday. He will also hold meetings with heads of South Korea, Egypt, La Belle France, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Trump has frequently criticized the UN, claiming that the United States does not get the respect it deserves despite its contributions to the world body ‐ currently at 22 percent of the annual budget.

"The first thing that as to be understood about the United Nations is that the UN was created in the late 1940s after the conclusion of the World War II and essentially it was a way for the victorious allied forces at WWII to run the world in their own interest," Preston told Press TV on Sunday.

"That has always been the principle purpose of the United Nations," he added.

Iran summons UAE envoy over 'idiotic' remarks
[PRESSTV] Iran has summoned UAE's charge d'affaires over "idiotic" remarks made by a senior Emirati official about a terrorist attack that left 25 people dead Saturday, Foreign Ministry front man Bahram Qassemi said on Sunday.

"Following idiotic remarks by an Emirati political adviser on the terrorist attack in Ahvaz, the United Arab Emirates' charge d'affaires was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the head of the relevant political office and the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran's strong protest at the irresponsible and insulting remarks was conveyed to him," Qassemi said.

"At the meeting, the Emirati charge d'affaires was warned that the blatant support for terrorist acts by an individual affiliated to the official Emirati agencies will bear responsibility for the UAE government, and indifference to it will not be acceptable," he added.

The summon came after Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a political adviser to Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, said the attack in Ahvaz was justified and that "attacking a military target is not a terrorist act".

"Moving the battle deeper inside Iran is a declared option and will increase during the next phase," he added.

Iranian authorities also summoned ambassadors of the Netherlands and Denmark as well as chargé d'affaires of the British Embassy in Tehran after the shooting spree during a military parade.

Chinese naval medical ship makes 1st visit to Venezuela
[PRESSTV] A Chinese naval medical vessel has traveled for the first time to the Venezuelan port of La Guaira, amid apparently growing ties between Beijing and Caracas.

The hospital ship, named Daishan Dao, also known as the Peace Ark, arrived on Saturday for an eight-day stop, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.

The ship has the capacity for 300 beds, 20 ICU beds, and eight operating rooms.

Forty major surgeries a day can be done on it, in addition to X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scanning. It also has a communications system to allow teleconferencing with doctors and specialists at other hospitals.

During the stay, the navy ship’s commander is to conduct "friendly visits" with Venezuelan officials, according to Xinhua. The news agency said the ship’s commander would be visiting military and political officials and inspecting Venezuelan military and medical facilities.

The Chinese visit comes after President Nicolas Maduro’s trip to Beijing earlier this month.

Iran points finger at Arab separatists, Gulf state for deadly attack
[DAWN] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday pointed blame at Arab separatists for a deadly attack on a military parade and accused an unnamed United States-backed Gulf state of supporting them.

Tehran also summoned diplomats from Denmark, the Netherlands and Britannia for allegedly hosting members of the group suspected of links to Saturday's attack near the Iraqi border that left at least 29 people dead.

Four Lions of Islam attacked a parade commemorating the start of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, capital of the border province of Khuzestan.

Officials and an eyewitness said the button men were clad in Iranian military uniforms and had sprayed the crowd with gunfire using weapons they had stashed in a nearby park.

Indian bishop refused bail in nun rape case
[DAWN] An Indian bishop accused of raping a nun was refused bail on Saturday, and ordered to remain in police custody to face questioning in a case that has fired up the rubes among clergy.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal was tossed in the slammer
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in southern Kerala state on Friday after Pope Francis relieved him from duty over the scandal that has sparked days of angry protests by clergy over police inaction.

Mulakkal, who heads the Roman Catholic diocese of Jalandhar in the northern state of Punjab, is accused of raping the nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016.

The nun, who has not been named, first accused Mulakkal in June but police only started formal questioning this month as fury over the case mounted.

Police asked for more time on Saturday to question the 52-year-old, who has denied the accusations.

In its submission to the court in Kerala, police said Mulakkal had illegally confined the victim in a guesthouse and subjected her "to rape and unnatural sex 13 times in the same room", The Times of India newspaper reported.

Mulakkal has called the scandal a conspiracy by those opposed to the Roman Catholic Church.

The Catholics Bishops’ Conference of India has said Mulakkal’s arrest was a "sad moment for all of us".

"As said before we expect the law to take its course and for the truth to emerge. At his moment our prayer is for healing," it said in a statement on Friday.

#3  The transformation of German politics was caused by Merkel's transformation of a traditional center-right big tent party into a party of the extreme left.

The AfD didn't cause anything, the rise of the AfD was caused by Merkel's transformation.

Setting the tone in the first parliamentary session, AfD parliamentary group chief Bernd Baumann said "a new era begins now", and promptly sparked a row with an erroneous historical remark about notorious Nazi Hermann Goering.

This is, at best, unintentionally misleading.

Prior to the election of 2017 the rules on selecting the ceremonial acting President of the Bundestag, who holds office until a President of the Bundestag is elected were changed to the detriment of the AfD.

This was a break with German paliamentary tradition. Baumann compared this to Goering's abolition of the office of acting President in 1933.

Baumann did not praise Goering as the article insinuates.

Since then, the once consensus-driven mood in the glass-domed Bundestag has given way to fierce debates peppered with taunts and calls to order.

There's been indeed a partial return to the normalcy of robust debate in parliament.

A 100% leftist parliament is naturally more consensus driven than a 87% leftist parliament.
In a vital Western democracy such 'consensus' is nothing that is desirable however.

I still remember REAL debates with Strauss, Kohl, Brandt, Schmidt and Wehner.

A "consensus driven parliament" has me worried much more. It came to be because the (former) "Great Coalition" dwarfed any opposition. The voter then made sure that the Great Coalition turned into a not so great one and if you believe the latest polls it now it doesn't even have a majority at all.

The AfD is a very mixed bag. I don't like it at all, but most AfD members hold positions the CDU/CSU held a few decades ago. They do have a few shady characters and Nazi apologists. But if the CDU/CSU becomes a conservative party again, the AfD will vanish.

#9  In the view of the German and Austrian mainstream press Daniel Pipes and Ezra Levant are 'right-wing extremist who conduct a pilgrimage to Hitler's hometown'.

Political labels assigned by this mainstream press should be taken and accepted only with more than a grain of salt.

When Social Democratic MP Johannes Kahrs called the presence of right-wing Lions of Islam in the Bundestag "unappetising", the AfD’s entire parliamentary faction walked out in protest.

Nothing new, here's a clip of the CDU/CSU walking out in protest in 1975.

I still remember REAL debates with Strauss, Kohl, Brandt, Schmidt and Wehner.

The clip above shows Wehner acting thuggishly and then wailing in unsavory self-pity. This isn't aesthetically pleasing, just the normal and desirable robust debate in a Western democratic parliament.

The presence of the AfD is reintroducing this normalcy.

Maldives police raid opposition on eve of election
[DAWN] Police in the Maldives raided the main campaign office of the opposition presidential candidate on Saturday, the eve of an election viewed as a referendum on whether democracy will survive in the country.

The move is a sign of a government crackdown against the opposition that has raised fears that Sunday’s election may be rigged to favour President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s party.

Police front man Ahmed Shifan told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that police raided Ibrahim Mohammed Solih’s campaign office late Saturday and that the raid was ongoing. He said police would share details of the raid after it was over.

Shauna Aminath, a spokeswoman for the opposition, said police were "not letting us go inside. They have not told what is happening". "No court warrant was produced. Police raided the building unlawfully, citing reports of illegal activity," Aminath said, adding that Solih was not in the building at the time of the raid.

Since Sunday’s election was announced, opposition leaders have feared the vote may be rigged. The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
said on Friday that it was not sending election observers because the Maldives had failed to meet the basic conditions for monitoring.

The battle for credit: Islamic State affiliate releases video showing alleged Iran gunmen

released a video Sunday which purports to show the perpetrators of a shooting attack in a military parade in the Iranian city of Ahwaz which left at least 29 people dead, including women and kiddies, and maimed dozens more, some of them critically.

The footage, released by the Amak news agency, shows three men in a vehicle, apparently on their way to carry out the attack, Haaretz reported.

"We are Moslems, they are heretics," one of the men can be heard saying in the video. "We will kill them with a guerilla attack, inshallah."

Gunmen disguised as soldiers on Saturday attacked the annual Iranian military parade in the country’s oil-rich southwest, marking the anniversary of the start of its 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

The attack saw gunfire sprayed into a crowd of marching soldiers from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, bystanders, and government officials watching from a nearby riser.

Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told the state news agency IRNA, "the Lions of Islam have undergone training in two countries in the Persian Gulf."

Shekarchi said the dead included a maiden of tender years and a former serviceman in a wheelchair.

"Of the four terrorists, three were sent to hell at the scene, while the fourth who had been maimed and locked away

went to hell moments ago due to his severe wounds," Shekarchi told state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Khuzestan deputy governor Ali-Hossein Hosseinzadeh told the semi-official ISNA news agency that "eight to nine" troops were among those killed, as well as a journalist.

Egyptian court sentences Muslim Brotherhood leader, 65 others, to life in prison
[PRESSTV] An Egyptian criminal court has sentenced the Supreme Guide of the now-outlawed Moslem Brüderbund and 65 others members of the movement to life in prison over charges of incitement to murder and violence during demonstrations five years ago.

On Sunday, 75-year-old Badie was convicted to life in prison over allegedly inciting members of the banned movement to attack Maghagha cop shoppe in the southern Egyptian province of Minya and killing a police officer in August 2013.

The attack came shortly after Egyptian security forces launched violent attacks on protest camps at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in the capital, Cairo, and Nahda Square in Giza, the third largest city in Egypt.

Human Rights Watch said at the time more than 815 people had been killed only at Rabaa Square, whereas the Egyptian Health Ministry put the corpse count at 638. The rights organization later said that the massacre had been one of the world’s largest in a single day in recent history.

An absolute majority of those killed were followers of Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, who was ousted on July 3 the same year in a military coup led by then head of the armed forces and current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

According to defense lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsood, around 700 people were tried again in this case. He said that 65 other members of the Brotherhood had also been sentenced to life in prison on Sunday, adding that 288 were acquitted, six have died since the first trial and the rest were sentenced to between three and 15 years in prison.
The process is the punishment. Al Ahram adds:
The sentence is the latest among a series of trials and re-trials against the Supreme Guide of Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund Mohammed Badie and other big shots of the Islamist group that ruled Egypt before Islamist president Mohammed Morsi was ousted following massive protests.

The court had previously sentenced Badie to death 2014 in this case, but an appeals hearing had overturned the verdict and ordered a retrial.

Another 81 defendants were sentenced to between 10-15 years in prison and dozens of others were handed shorter jail terms. The court acquitted 288 other defendants in the same case.

Last month, Badie and other senior Brotherhood leaders were sentenced to life in prison over similar charges in a separate case.

In July, a court referred the cases of Badie and other Brotherhood leaders in a separate case to Egypt’s top Moslem religious authority, the Mufti, for his opinion on whether they should be sentenced to death.

due to presence of senior doctors inside the OPD they left the premises while raising slogans against the hospital administration and the Punjab Health Department.

A YDA Punjab chapter office-bearer, Dr Aasim, told newsmen outside the OPD of Services Hospital that the young doctors would stop working at the indoor wards of the public hospitals if doctors were not provided foolproof security under an Act of parliament.

"This is not the first incident of harassment of lady doctors. At least four such incidents have been reported to the high-ups of health department during the last one-and-a-half months. Every now and then attendants of patients attack doctors at the emergency and other wards. Enough is enough," he said.

Minister for Health Dr Yasmin Rashid said a majority of young doctors rejected the strike call by a group of young doctors in outpatient departments of government hospitals on Saturday.

"Majority of junior doctors along with their seniors continued examining patients with a spirit of service to ailing humanity by providing medical treatment to thousands of patients in tertiary care hospitals," said the minister while regretting that a group of young doctors was making hue and cry for ulterior motives.

Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
and other cities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as well.

"This shows that there is a threat because of the virus, which is travelling with people from Afghanistan to Pakistain, so we need to ensure our children’s immunity level is high to keep them safe from the virus," he added.

A total of 14 cases have been reported near the border in Afghanistan, as polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccination campaigns cannot be held in some provinces for security reasons.

The area where the poliovirus originated can be detected through DNA testing. In 2013, the Syrian government had alleged that poliovirus that originated in the then Federally Administered Tribal Areas had travelled to Syria because of Paks who were fighting alongside rebels.

Newspaper: Islamic State chief Baghdadi moved to Afghanistan via Iran

According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, IS manages a location to host its fighters in Zahedan in cooperation with the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Al-Baghdadi has been reported killed or maimed on a number of occasions.

Last month, Baghdadi was reported to be "clinically dead" after an Iraqi Arclight airstrike targeted him during a meeting with a host of IS leaders in Syria in June.

No reports about al-Baghdadi have been heard since September 2017, when he urged supporters to wage attacks against the West and keep fighting in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

Baghdadi emerged as leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Islamic State, in 2010. In October 2011, the US officially designated al-Baghdadi as a terrorist. It has offered a reward of up to $25m (£19.6m) for information leading to his capture or death.

Hamas says indirect ceasefire talks with Israel halted, protests to escalate
[IsraelTimes] Gazoo official blames impasse on rival Paleostinian Authority; one killed as 1,000 Paleostinians gather along border for night time riot, clashing with IDF soldiers

Gazoo’s Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", rulers said on Sunday that their indirect negotiations to reach a long-term ceasefire agreement with Israel have halted and vowed to step up the violent protests along the border.

Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri
...a senior spokesman for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gaza. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest...
blamed the impasse on the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority, which has voiced its strong opposition to the Egypt-brokered talks.

Abu Zuhri said that in response, the Gazoo-based terrorist group was escalating its protests in new locations along Gazoo’s borders with Israel.

In the wake of the announcement, more than a thousand Gazooks gathered at the border for a rare night-time protest, burning tires and clashing with IDF troops. The Hamas-run Gazoo Health Ministry said one person was killed and 11 injured by IDF fire.

The ministry said Imad Ishtawi, 21, was shot in the head.

The IDF said it had spotted a cell about to launch fire balloons into Israel and targeted them with fire from an aircraft. The air force usually fires warning shots at the balloon cells.

On Sunday, nine fires broke out in southern Israel as a result of the arson balloons. On Friday and Saturday, thirteen fires were reported in the areas adjacent to the Gazoo Strip. In response to each attack, IDF aircraft fired at cells of Gazooks as they launched the devices towards Israel.

The weekend also saw thousands of Gazooks demonstrate at the border. On Friday, one Paleostinian was reported killed by the Hamas ministry and at least 312 were maimed as some 10,000 Paleostinians protested on the Gazoo Strip border, with some throwing bombs, rocks, and burning tires, as soldiers responded with tear gas and occasional live fire.

One Israeli soldier was lightly injured by shrapnel from a pipe bomb thrown at troops, the army said, adding that it spotted a number of infiltration attempts.

Hamas had been indirectly negotiating with Israel through Egyptian and UN mediators to pacify the tense border in exchange for easing restrictions on Gazoo. But the efforts floundered as differences compounded between Hamas and its West Bank rival Fatah, who opposed the deal.

Hamas and Fatah, the party lead by PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, have been deeply divided for more than a decade. Hamas seized control of Gazoo from the Fatah-dominated Paleostinian Authority in 2007 and several attempts at intra-Paleostinian reconciliation since then have failed.

The PA government was pressuring Hamas to reach a reconciliation deal that would return Fatah rule to Gazoo, and earlier this year began to scale back electricity payments and other financial support in an effort to force Hamas to cede ground in Gazoo.

Abbas demanded that Hamas hand over complete control of Gazoo to the PA, and had warned against any ceasefire deal that did not include the Ramallah government.

Hamas has stepped up violence in recent months in an attempt to get concessions from Israel and the PA.

The lies of Russia’s report on Israeli culpability for plane fiasco
While the Israelis are not pleased about Russia’s response to their presentation, the list of Russian failures that led to the downing of the Ilyushin Il-20 by Syrian missiles is embarrassing.
[Ynet] The Russian Defense Ministry has now heaped full blame on Israel for the fact that Syria downed a Russian spy plane while trying to repel an IAF attack. A closer analysis of the report reveals a string of lies and half-truths to cover up for the incompetence and blunders made by Russian and Syrian operators of their own air defenses.

The most striking thing about the report produced by the Russian Defense Ministry about Syria’s downing of the Russian spy plane in Latakia last week which has been blamed on Israel is the fact that it ignores the findings of the investigation conducted in Israel that were presented by the IAF chief Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin and Israeli intelligence officials who accompanied him to Moscow in a bid to lower the ensuing tension.

Israel, in an almost unprecedented move, sent its IAF commander with authorized and detailed documentation to Moscow which was intended not only to shed light on what transpired, but also on the events leading up to it.

Afghanistan
Alarm Bells Ring Over High ANA Casualty Rate
The tree of Afghan freedom, watered with so much blood.
[ToloNews] Senators in the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) on Sunday summoned Ministers of Defense and Interior and the deputy head of the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) to answer questions over the increase of insecurity in the country and the high casualty toll among security forces.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Tariq Shah Bahrami acknowledged the casualty toll problem among Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and said in the past month 513 soldiers were killed.

Bahrami said this had been one of the worst months in terms of deaths among security forces. He also said at least 718 were maimed and 43 were captured by turbans.

He however emphasized that the corpse count among bandidos turbans was three to four times higher.

"Unfortunately, in the last one month 513 ANA soldiers were killed, 718 maimed and 43 captured; it was the highest number of fatalities we have had in a single month. Compared to the fatalities among our security forces, the enemy suffered three to four times more than us," said Bahrami.

Senators however blasted security departments over their inability to prevent attacks in provinces as well as in Kabul city.

The senators said instead of preventing attacks, security forces were being used to retrieve bodies following such incidents.

"The bandidos turbans carry out attacks and loot properties, but when we (security forces) get there, we only collect bodies and assess damage caused to the area," senate Mohammad Alam Ezedyar said.

"You take control of the city after it is attacked, and everything is destroyed. You become proud that you have taken the city back, what kind of pride is this? Why should a city collapse?" said senator Abdullah Qaraloq.

"What is the main problem? Afghanistan is in a very bad situation," said another senator Zalmai Zabuli.

The defense minister said currently the Afghan cops are not being backed up by air support at night and that this is proving a big challenge.

Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak meanwhile responded to senators questions on the calls for a review of the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Kabul and Washington.

Barmak said the BSA was an important instrument for stability in the region and Afghanistan and that it helps to maintain security in the country.

"I told you earlier that daily 30 ANA and police soldiers get killed," said Barmak.

"Those who oppose the BSA are working in the interests of neighboring countries," said Bahrami.

IDF rejects Russian findings on plane downing
[Ynet] Israeli military expresses disagreement over Russian Defense Ministry's conclusion that IAF bears responsibility for Syrian army's shooting down of Russian aircraft, claiming IDF planes were not in Syrian airspace at time of incident.

The IDF rejected on Saturday the Russian Defense Ministry’s investigation findings on Syria’s downing of Russian plane, which concluded that Israel bears responsibility for the incident that killed 15 people.

According to the Russian report presented by the Defense Ministry, the IAF deceived the Russians by presenting false information regarding the area in which the strike in Latakia was planned on September 17 which prevented the Russian plane from leaving the danger zone.

I also like this bit from the Jerusalem Post op-ed, above (Don’t Be Fooled):

In a turn of events that could only happen in the Middle East, the Syrian army shoots down a Russian spy plane following an Israeli attack on an Iranian facility meant to manufacture precision arms for Hezbollah in Leb ‐ and Israel gets blamed.

That chain of events brings to mind Menachem Begin's famous line after the Sabra and Shatila massacres in 1982: "Non-jews kill non-Jews, and they immediately come to hang the Jews."

But if I recall correctly, Menachem Begin also made aliyah from Russia.

The development came only two days after a Death Eater drone attack left eight Syrian soldiers injured in the northern part of Latakia province.

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria said the assault was launched by a group of foreign-backed Death Eaters, based in the city of Jisr al-Shughur, against a group of Syrian troopers near the town of Qala'at Marza.

OPEC raises forecast based on US oil production
[DAWN] The OPEC oil cartel raised its global production forecast on Sunday based on higher-than-predicted US output in a report outlining a long-term rise in net demand, particularly in developing countries.

In its annual World Oil Outlook, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries forecast world supply of all hydrocarbons (primarily oil and liquified natural gas) would rise from a current 98.4 million barrels per day (mbd) to 104.5 million by 2023, and 111.9 million by 2040.

The figures are higher than last year's forecast, with rising production in non-cartel states led by the United States a major factor.

Non-member production overall is forecast to rise by 8.6 mbd to 66.1 mbd by 2023 on higher global demand, the report added, but a relative tapering off from 2020 will see cartel members' crude production shrug off a medium-term trend fall, OPEC predicted.

The body said demand would continue rising despite electric-powered vehicles taking an increasing market share and political moves to champion renewable energy.

Guardians of Religion Organization (Tanzeen Hurras al-Din) is made up of former Nusra members who had defected their former group only to form a more krazed killer faction.

The ultraconservative group also vowed to carry on fight against the Syrian government and its allies until the end.

In the same context, the FSA-affiliated Ansar al-Deen, chaired by Abu Abdullah al-Shami, said it is not committed with the RussiaTurkey-brokered deal.

Both factions are mainly active in al-Ghab Plains, west Idlib and northern Latakia countryside.

Don't Be Fooled, Moscow And Jerusalem Still Need Each Other In Syria
[Jpost] Netanyahu will need all the good will he built up over the past nine years with the Russian president to ensure that the current crisis does not seriously harm Israel's ties with Moscow.

...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...

Swiss region overwhelmingly votes for 'burqa ban'
[DAWN] A second Swiss canton will introduce a regional "burqa ban", after voters in St Gallen on Sunday emphatically backed prohibiting all face-covering garments in public spaces.

At the same time, voters across Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
resoundingly rejected initiatives aimed at boosting local farming and promoting more ethical and environmental standards in food production, amid fears of cost hikes and reduced consumer choice.

In the northeastern canton of St Gallen, nearly 67 per cent of voters came out in favour of introducing the implicit "burqa ban", according to official results, which showed turnout was 36 per cent.

That paves the way for the canton to follow the example of the southern region of Ticino, where a law was introduced two years ago that appeared to be aimed at burqas and other Moslem veils.

Three other cantons ‐ Zurich, Solothurn and Glarus ‐ have rejected introducing such bans in recent years.

A text stipulating that "any person who renders themselves unrecognisable by covering their face in a public space, and thus endangers public security or social and religious peace will be fined" was adopted by politicians in St Gallen late last year.

Terrorist bid foiled in Bajaur; two killed
[DAWN] Security forces on Saturday claimed to have foiled a terrorism bid in Bajaur tribal district by killing two terrorists, including one would-be jacket wallah, during an intelligence-based operation in Mamond tehsil.

Security sources said that both terrorists, including a deputy operational ’commander’ of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
Bajaur chapter, were killed during a special operation conducted in the hilly Gat Agra area

The sources stated that the operation was conducted following the information that the gunnies were attempting to carry out terrorism activities in the region. Soon after receiving the information, a contingent of security forces was dispatched to the area which killed the gunnies before they carried out their activities.

They claimed that the dear departed deputy operational commander of the TTP Bajaur, who was wearing a suicide jacket, was among the most wanted holy warriors in the district. He said the krazed killer commander had been involved in many terrorist activities in the region, including kabooms.

The sources pointed out that the dead krazed killer commander was also involved in collection of extortion from locals on behalf of the TTP Bajaur.

A number of materials, including three 9 mm pistols, 30 rounds of 9 mm pistol, one torch and one mobile set, were recovered from the bodies of terrorists.

The sources didn’t name the killed terrorists, but claimed that they were on terrorism mission, saying they could have caused huge destruction in the area if the action was not taken immediately.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in its latest report stated that 1,692 non-combatants were killed in the first six months of 2018.

According to UNAMA, the use of improvised bombs (IEDs) in attacks by Anti-Government Elements remained the leading cause of civilian casualties.

"The combined use of suicide and non-suicide IEDs caused nearly half of all civilian casualties. Continuing trends first documented last year by UNAMA, the majority of IED casualties were caused by suicide and complex attacks, which again were responsible for record high civilian casualties, resulting in 1,413 civilian casualties (427 deaths and 986 injured), a 22 per cent increase," UNAMA said.

Kite string claims young man’s life
[DAWN] LAHORE: A young man died after the string of a stray kite slit his throat in Bhati Gate area late on Friday.
Pakistain is the only country I've ever heard of that has kite fatalities. India and, I believe Iran, celebrate the same festival with kites and the corpse count appears to be minimal.
According to Wikipedia, kite fighting is particularly associated with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, and Brazil. Lahore claims to be the kite flying capital of south Asia.
Faisal, 30, was returning home on his cycle of violence when the string of a stray kite slit his throat, leaving him in a pool of blood, the police said quoting witnesses. He was rushed to the Mayo Hospital where he departed this vale of tears.

His family and other relatives blamed the police for the death alleging that the citizens blatantly violated Section 144 imposed by the government during the last three days or so. They alleged that hundreds of citizens were seen flying kites in the city, particularly in the Walled City and adjoining areas.

They alleged that the business of selling strings and kites in the Walled City was going on unchecked.

Five attempts by Islamic State to approach Iraqi-Iranian borders repulsed

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Five attempts by Islamic State members to approach the Iraqi-Iranian borders were foiled, a security source from Diyala said on Sunday.

Speaking to Baghdad Today website, the source said “security troops in Diyala managed to repel five attempts by Islamic State to approach the Iraqi-Iranian borders.”

The borders, according to the source, “are under high security measures from Diyala side.”

The borders between the two countries stretch for more than 200 kilometers from Diyala side. Huge amounts of landmines exist there.

Afghanistan
Up To 200 People Fall Victim To Mines Every Month
[ToloNews] Officials from the Mine Detection Center (MDC) on Sunday said each month up to 200 people in the country fall victim to IEDs ‐ both newly planted devices and unwent kaboom! mines going back to the civil war.

MDC officials were speaking at an event in Kabul that was held to mark the International Day of Peace.

Mohammad Shahab Hakimi, head of MDC, said most of the victims are unaware of where these explosives are and also do not know what to do when they step on a mine.

"Every months between 180 and 200 people (are killed and maimed), it means 2,000 people a year become victims of mines. The fatalities have increased," said Hakimi.

In the meantime, State Minister for Natural Disaster Management Najib Aqa Fahim said in the past 30 years 19 million unwent kaboom! mines and IED have been detected and defused around the country.

"Over 2,500 square kilometers of land in Afghanistan has been cleared of mines and around 19 million mines and bombs have been detected and defused," said Fahim.

Fahim also said there is still 2,000 square kilometers of land in the country that needs to be cleared of mines and explosives devices.

Nafisa, a woman in Kabul who works with the MDC said she works in the field to detect, defuse and to provide awareness training to people about mines. She said this is in the hope of saving lives and securing the environment.

Nafisa said she has worked for MDC for two years. "I get happy when a man, woman or child becomes aware of mines - which is the enemy of all of us," said Nafisa.

Mohamamd Ali, another MDC employee said he has been working in the demining sector for 21 years ‐ even during the civil war ‐ when he worked in remote areas, in the mountains and deserts -detecting and defusing mines.
