Home Front: Culture Wars
It's not fair
As Roy Moore's troubles were just getting underway, leftist CNN commentator Van Jones made what has to be one of the least self-aware and yet most revealing comments of the Trumpian Age. Targeting Breitbart firebrand Steve Bannon, who had promoted Moore, Van Jones said, "Bannon is trying to create this sense of an aggrieved identity, frankly, of a white aggrieved identity group that’s under siege by everybody. And this is that in its worse form. So, you’re not supposed to vote as a father, you’re not supposed to vote as a woman. You’re supposed to vote as a member of this identity group against the world. And if that works, that is very, very bad for the Republican Party and it’s very, very bad for our country."

This comes from the man ‐ from the political party ‐ from the philosophy ‐ that has sold absolutely nothing but aggrieved identities for the last sixty years, ever since it became clear that actual leftist policies don't work. Blacks, women, people who think they're women, people who pretend to be black ‐ whatever category you find yourself in, the left has preached that you should ignore the disaster of leftism and focus only on your sweet victimhood, voting your grievances even when it's against your best interests.

In other words, Van Jones' only real complaint against Bannon is that Bannon has sunk to the level of Van Jones!

No, Trump's not a populist – he's a breed all by himself
h/t Instapundit
You should never let your opponents define you, because they’re not looking to do you any favors. That’s why Republicans, especially those who voted for President Trump, should object to being called populists.

Populism was one of the nastiest of American political movements. It was inevitable, therefore, that Trump would be called a populist. But that doesn’t describe Trump, or the Republican Party he re-invented.

It’s true that, like most populists, Trump thinks that tariff walls that keep foreign goods out of the country might help American workers. But then Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley thought so, too, and they weren’t populists.

It’s also true that, like most populists, Trump championed an underclass unjustly held back by an aristocracy of wealth. But then Karl Marx and socialist Eugene V. Debs thought the same thing, and they weren’t populists. And like most populists, Trump decried the influence of money in politics. But then so did Hillary Clinton and Liz Warren, and nobody called them populists.

Here’s what the accusation of populism really means. It’s a smear meant to link one to people like "Pitchfork Ben" Tillman, one of the vilest characters in American political history. Tillman was the governor of South Carolina from 1890 to 1894 and served as the state’s representative in the US Senate for the next 23 years. He invented Jim Crow laws in his state, defended lynch mobs and boasted of the African-Americans he had killed.

Trump is something new in American politics. He’s not Andrew Jackson, or a plain-speaking Harry Truman. He’s not Ronald Reagan. He’s unlike anything we’ve seen before, for the simple reason that he’s up against something we’ve never seen before: a left that’s given up on the American dream of a mobile and classless society, that defends economic immobility and aristocracy.
A well known phenomena in history - wouldn't have caught you unprepared if you were less emotionally invested in "American Exceptionalism"

Syrian raids on rebel-held region kill 14 civilians
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] At least 14 civilians including a maiden of tender years were killed by Syrian regime bombardment of the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus on Saturday, a monitor said.

Ten of the victims were killed by air strikes and another four died in rocket fire, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It said another 40 people were maimed and the corpse count was likely to rise.

At a medical center near the town of Hazza, an AFP photographer saw maimed children and a child’s body wrapped in plastic.

Saturday’s government raids come after an attack on Tuesday by the Islamist rebel group Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
on a military base near the town of Harasta.

On Friday, regime bombardments killed at least 19 people, including six children, mostly in the city of Douma.

The deaths came amid an escalation in tit-for-tat attacks between regime forces and rebels holding the enclave on the capital’s eastern outskirts.

Retaliatory shelling of Damascus on Thursday and Friday by rebels killed nine people.

The official SANA news agency said on Saturday rebel shelling of the city killed one person and maimed 20.

Eastern Ghouta is supposed to be part of a "de-escalation zone" under a deal between Russia, Iran and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

aimed at reducing the level of violence.

Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

’s forces have besieged Eastern Ghouta since 2013, and humanitarian conditions in the area, where some 400,000 people live, are dire.

More than 330,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the Syrian war, which began in 2011 as the regime brutally crushed anti-government protests. Millions have been displaced.

3 detained for attacking police, Palestinians at protest over ramming attack
[IsraelTimes] Security forces clash with settlers trying to block road outside West Bank town of Kiryat Arba, home to victim in Friday attack

Three youths were detained by police Saturday night outside Kiryat Arba during a protest over a Friday car-ramming terror attack in which a resident of the West Bank town was maimed.

Dozens of members of the close-knit community were holding a demonstration at the entrance to Kiryat Arba when several youths attempted to block traffic on the main road passing the settlement, according to police.

Officers clashed with the protesters as they tried to clear them from the road. One was detained for disobeying police orders and another for attacking an officer, police said. Both were released after questioning.

A third protester was tossed in the calaboose
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
for allegedly attacking Paleostinians in a car stopped on the road.

Honenu, a right-wing legal aid organization defending the suspects, said in a statement that police has used "heavy violence" against he protesters.

community in Kiryat Arba, continued Saturday night to be treated in the intensive care ward and was sedated and not yet breathing on his own, the Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem said.

Holaring was seriously maimed when he was hit by a car driven by a Paleostinian terrorist early in the morning as he stood at the Gush Etzion Junction south of Jerusalem in the West Bank.

Africa Subsaharan
Gambians enjoy new freedoms
[THEEASTAFRICAN.CO.KE] At Banjul International Airport, there are three jets on the runway inscribed Republic of The Gambia
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea, of which there are the Republic of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, New Guinea, the English coin in circulation between 1663 and 1813, and Guyana, which sounds like it should be another one) was ruled by Britain...
They are part of four aeroplanes that were a symbol of former president Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year autocratic rule over the impoverished small West African nation.

An airport official said that the 54-year-old former leader had wanted to leave the country with the jets after he was ousted from power in the December 2016 election.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
his successor, President Adama Barrow, made sure the jets were impounded.

"He wanted to take the planes because he had personalised them. They were for him and his family. Everything belonged to him," the airport official said.

The seemingly new and well-maintained jets are a stark contrast to the dilapidated Banjul airport at which they are parked. The government has said it will sell off the jets.

As we line up in the humid heat waiting for our entry visas, I notice that Banjul Airport has rickety fans that seem like they will fall off the ceiling any minute.

Passengers and the hospitable immigration officials sweat away in the heat. Paint is peeling off the walls and everything, from the conveyor belt to the partitioning, looks old and outdated.

A drive into Banjul ushers you into the reality of what Jammeh’s rule was like ‐poor infrastructure and planning, poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment. Youth and women line the streets hawking merchandise and fruits.

The capital’s streets are dirty and there is no proper drainage. Cows and donkeys are a common sight alongside piles of fresh watermelons and garbage.

When we arrive at the hotel in Brufut, which is a few kilometres outside Banjul, we are told that the 5-star facility was previously owned by Jammeh, like most of the other important facilities in Banjul. The current government is trying to repossess the properties and businesses or put them under the ownership of the government.

Our hotel, the Gambia Coral Beach Hotel, in Brufut Heights, Serrekunda, sits on the pristine, palm tree-dotted beaches of the Atlantic Ocean in Brufut. It had been grabbed by Jammeh from Sheraton, along with another hotel, Coco Beach.

"He owned everything. Every big establishment was his," said Bubacar Ndow, our tour guide as we drove around Serrekunda, a sprawling urban centre at the coast.

Gambians had been ruled by Jammeh for 22 years; he had killed, imprisoned or exiled his political opponents. Now, under President Barrow, citizens say they have the freedom to air their views.

"We believe he will deliver on the political and economic reforms. We are optimistic. He still needs time, but most importantly we can speak our minds and do what we want. That freedom is what we needed," said Pa Bojang, an army veteran who was our security guard and tour guide.

The newspaper headlines tell of former Jammeh officials facing a commission of inquiry on alleged corruption and illegal dealings.

As we move around the busy Serrekunda market under the scorching sun, sifting through piles of goods, mainly imitations from China, an Economic Community of West African States patrol car with gunnies drives by slowly, perhaps to reassure Gambians that Jammeh is now history.

Many still feel the former president, currently in exile in Equatorial Guinea, should be extradited and charged in court or shipped to the International Criminal Court to face charges of crimes against humanity.

"He denied us every right, including education," said Housna Saine, a 24-year old who sells sim cards and airtime along the Serrekunda market road.

The Tricky Business of Removing Robert Gabriel Mugabe
[All Africa] The military on Friday changed tack in its determination to remove Zim-bob-we President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
from office after he firmly resisted any deal that would prematurely end his leadership of the ruling Zanu-PF party and the country.

During discussions with takeover leader General Constantino Chiwenga brokered by South Africa and Botswana, President Mugabe said he would only agree to a transition plan hinged on the country's Constitution.

In short, he would not leave the chairmanship of Zanu-PF until the party's congress next month or the presidency before elections expected to be held in July or August next year.

Impeachment
With Gen Chiwenga and the army still beholden to President Mugabe as commander-in-chief -- and keen not to lose international support if they took power by force -- the generals have now resorted to a political and legally binding solution that will see the President's support within the party weakened from the grassroots before an impeachment in parliament this week.

"War veterans are the game-changers. The military is there to uphold the Constitution," war veterans leader Christopher Mutsvangwa told journalists in Harare. "We want the grand show of people's power."

Mr Mutsvangwa said if President Mugabe did not resign, the former fighters would "settle scores" at a rally planned for Saturday.

Zim-bob-we's generals are now pursuing a political route to push President Mugabe out within a week of putting him under house arrest.

Away from the capital Harare, Zanu-PF has convened provincial meetings to elect new officials and called a Central Committee meeting, on the orders of the military.

"President Mugabe was stage-managing rallies with his wife," Mr Mutsvangwa said, explaining why the party meetings will be different this time.

A Zanu-PF Central Committee meeting is now scheduled for Sunday, where President Mugabe and his wife will be expelled from the party he helped establish in 1963.

Sacked vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is believed to be the brains behind the army takeover, will be made party president, just a fortnight after the same Zanu-PF structures were being railroaded to pass a vote of no confidence against him.

Days earlier, President Mugabe had fired his long-time lieutenant for "disloyalty and deceit."

Now ruling Zanu-PF wants Mugabe gone -party source
[THEEASTAFRICAN.CO.KE] Leaders of Zim-bob-wean President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
’s party are making plans to force him from office if the 93-year-old leader resists pressure from the army to quit, a senior party source said on Friday.

The self-styled grand old man of African politics, the only leader Zim-bob-we has known since independence in 1980, insists he is still in charge. But the source, a senior member of Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party, made clear the party wanted him gone.

"If he becomes stubborn, we will arrange for him to be fired on Sunday," the source said. "When that is done, it’s impeachment on Tuesday."

Zim-bob-we’s official newspaper, the Herald, ran photographs late on Thursday that showed a grinning Mugabe shaking hands with military chief General Constantino Chiwenga, who seized power this week.

That suggested Mugabe was managing to hold out against Chiwenga’s coup, with some political sources saying he was trying to delay his departure until elections scheduled for next year.

Dismissal plan
The Zanu-PF source said that was not the case. Anxious to avoid a protracted stalemate, party leaders were drawing up plans to dismiss Mugabe at the weekend if he refused to quit, the source said.

"There is no going back," the source told Rooters. "It’s like a match delayed by heavy rain, with the home side leading 90-0 in the 89th minute."

Mugabe’s options look limited. The army is camped on his doorstep. His wife, Grace, is under house arrest, and her key political allies are in military custody. The police, once a bastion of support, have showed no signs of resistance.

Furthermore, he has little popular backing in the capital, a hotbed of support for the opposition, which has tapped into the anger and frustration at his handling of the economy, which collapsed after the seizure of white-owned farms in 2000.

Unemployment is now running at nearly 90 per cent. Chronic shortages of hard currency are driving up the price of imports as much as 50 per cent a month.

'People of Zim'
On social media, Zim-bob-weans circulated a spoof message to Chiwenga demonstrating the depth of anger at Mugabe.

"If Mugabe refuses to resign, let the army take him to First Street and leave him there. People of Zim will negotiate with him," the message read.

In a statement broadcast on national television, the military said it was "engaging" with Mugabe and would announce an outcome as soon as possible.

Bangladesh
Religion in politics: absolutism or democracy?
[Dhaka Tribune] One doesn’t have to look too far to see the growing influence of religion in politics ‐ whether in the rise of religious nationalist groups in India and Myanmar, or the religious influence that has led to a change in textbooks from the national curriculum in our own country.

Is religion being brought into politics by authoritarian regimes? Does the role that religion play in forming personal identity mean they are found to enter into democratic politics? Is religion a tool for conflict or for legitimacy? Is it ever possible to separate religion and politics?

These were only some of the questions that came up at the session "Religion in politics: absolutism or democracy?" with Azeem Ibrahim, Charles Glass, Jeff Kingston, Michael Vatikiotis and Zafar Sobhan, moderated by novelist and journalist Samrat Choudhury.

The mass appeal of religion v secularising forces
Azeem Ibrahim, who recently wrote a book on the Rohingya and is working on another on radicalisation, expressed his belief that religion and politics will always be intertwined "because first of all religion provides cover for many political manouvres and provides a complex discourse to legitimise political action, and secondly, religion still continues to play a very formative part in identity formation for people around the world."

Charless Glass drew on his decades of experience as a journalist in the Middle East to provide a brief glimpse of the evolution of religion and politics in the region, referring to the secular, left politics of the 1970s led largely by the Paleostinian revolution as well as Gamal Abed Nasser, former president of Egypt "who represented a great secular force."

He said, "The role of religion began to assert itself during the Lebanese civil war and after the death of Nasser. Because secularism and socialism had failed to address the fundamental problems of the Arab world, people began to look elsewhere, and that void was filled by religion."

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
he also added that while people were turning to religion, they were also turning away from religion playing a daily role in their lives ‐ which is why the black flag of ISIS was not welcomed in most of the region.

Religion as a tool of legitimacy
Editor of Dhaka Tribune Zafar Sobhan explained the Bangladeshi context and current struggle between secular politics and religiously backed demands, saying that while many have viewed Awami League’s willingness to negotiate with religiously affiliated groups as concerning, he believes it is only their attempt to co-opt an already existing movement and change or control its direction.

Michael Vatikiotis drew on his experience as a journalist and private diplomat in Southeast Asia to explain the Indonesian context, and discussed how Islam is often used to win votes and legitimise political power struggles.

Does this mean that in democratic systems, the mass appeal of religion will inevitably influence politics, or worse, politicians will always use religion as a tool of legitimacy?

At this point, Glass brought up what he called the "elephant in the room" ‐ the role of the US in using religious language in their campaign against the "Godless communists," and the violent ideological framework of Wahhabism that was created as a blow-back from Cold War policies.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
Jeff Kingston argued that it is also important to look at state security forces in Asia, and used the examples of Bodu Bala Sena in Sri Lanka, Ma Ba Tha in Myanmar and Front Pembela Islam in Indonesia to demonstrate how they were in some ways funded or established due to the intervention of security forces.

While the panelists differed on the role and influence of different actors, they all agreed that different geopolitical struggles underwrite all religious conflicts across the world.

#4  It's doubtful that religion can be removed from government. Religion can be used to justify many things. It is as said, a clean conscious does indeed make for a good pillow. One needs to be careful not to follow false Gods.

Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
must go.

Buses and lorries provided by well-wishers were ferrying people from all over the country to the venue of the planned mass rally against the country's 93-year-old ruler.

Mugabe remains under house arrest after Wednesday's takeover of power by the military, reportedly refusing to step down.

Hugs between whites and blacks, which are rarely seen in public, were the order of the morning in the central business district as thousands of Zim-bob-weans joined hands in solidarity with the military for taking over government.

They held placards reading 'Bob's not my uncle', 'No to Mugabe dynasty', 'Make love not war', 'Zim-bob-we army the voice of the people', 'ZANU PF recall back Mugabe', 'SADC, AU stay out of Zim-bob-we Affairs', 'This is the Zim-bob-we we want', 'Selfless not selfish government'.

Some held pictures of defence forces commander General Constantino Chiwenga and ousted Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Others were thanking God for the army and for honouring them with the profession of activism.

And, unlike in the past when the presence of the army on the streets meant that protestors had to run for their lives, this time soldiers are being celebrated while they smile and wave at the demonstrators.

Protest group #ThisFlag appears to be at the centre of the march with nearly a quarter of participants waving the national flag in a show of love for their country and defiance to their oppressors.

Participants believe the battle against the Mugabe regime is already won despite the military having not issued a public statement on how the stand-off with the veteran leader will be resolved.

Mugabe is reportedly resisting pressure from the military generals to step down but matters have now been escalated with his own Zanu PF party declaring no confidence in his leadership and demanding that he leaves office.

Argentina missing navy submarine: Search stepped up
[BBC] The Argentine navy is stepping up its search in the South Atlantic for a 44-crew submarine that has been out of radio contact for three days.

President Mauricio Macri said all national and international resources were being deployed to help find the San Juan as quickly as possible.

A Nasa research plane has joined the search for the vessel.

Britain and countries in the region have offered help after it disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the coast.

"We have not been able to find, or have visual or radar communication with the submarine," navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told a news conference.

The diesel-electric submarine was returning from a routine mission to Ushuaia, near the southern-most tip of South America, to its base at Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires.

Its last contact with the navy command was on Wednesday morning.

Decoding Iran and Hezbollah’s desires for Lebanon
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The importance of Hezbollah for Iran as an overseas fighting force, which operates alongside its own military, cannot be underestimated. Since its establishment in Leb in the early 1980s by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and Quds Force, Hezbollah has fought wars and carried out deadly attacks against civilians in foreign lands that have proven its worth as a terror group.

Terrorist attacks carried out by Hezbollah, which have targeted various nations over the years, can only be construed as attacks carried out by the Iranian administration through proxy. As by using its Quds Force, the regime itself can claim plausible deniability from its deeds, which it has done for many decades.

Iraqi security forces repel ISIS attack in Diyala
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Security troops managed to repulse an attack by Islamic State militants against checkpoint in northeastern Diyala, a security source said.

“Police checkpoints deployed near Tawakol region, north of Muqdadiyah were attacked by IS cells,” the source told Alghad Press on Friday.

“Troops managed to repel the attack without casualties,” the source added. The region, from where fire was opened, was combed. Situation has been under control.

A government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition has been fighting, since October 2016, the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Two persons were killed, while a third from the same family was wounded in an attack launched by Islamic State militants against their house in south of Nineveh, an official was quoted saying on Friday.

“A group of IS members attacked, today, a house in Jahouni village, in Hammam al-Alil. They opened fire against the residents, which caused death of the father and one of his sons and injury of another son,” Khalaf al-Jabouri, head of Hammam al-Alil town, said.

“Security troops headed to the accident spot and transferred the wounded to nearby hospital and took the victims to forensic medicine department,” he added.

Earlier on the day, Jabouri called for opening the floodgates of Mosul dam to force the hiding militants get out of their havens, which they use to attack civilians in Hammam al-Alil.

State Department defends reorganization, admits low morale
Some facts and figures to counter the posturing.
[Yahoo] The State Department is hitting back at the growing bipartisan criticism of Rex Tillerson's leadership and accusations he is presiding over a debilitating brain drain of the nation's diplomatic corps. At the same time, it allowed that a lack of communication with employees about Tillerson's intent to reorganize the department had contributed to low morale.

In a letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Republican chairman, the department said Tillerson's reorganization plans aren't crippling the agency as reports have claimed. Top ranks aren't being intentionally gutted through attrition, mass retirements and buyouts, it said, and a planned 8 percent reduction of its nearly 75,000 employees had been mandated by the Office of Management and Budget and is proceeding under that order.

In the letter, which was sent to Sen. Bob Corker late Thursday, the department said there are only 108 fewer foreign service officers now than in 2016. The tally is still 2,000 more than there were in 2008, it said.

It said a widely cited figure that 60 percent of diplomats at the highest level had left the foreign service since January is a "distortion" because only six people held the rank known as "career ambassador." Two remain, it said. Since 1980, only from one to seven career ambassadors have ever served at the same time.

Nevertheless, the letter seems unlikely to stem the criticism of Tillerson. Critics also point to departures of senior and mid-level foreign service officers and a hiring freeze of entry level diplomats that has been relaxed only to take on about 100 new employees in the current budget year. That's about a third of recent yearly intakes.

Democratic and Republican politicians also oppose Tillerson's proposal to cut the department's budget by nearly 30 percent, suggesting there will be rancorous exchanges on staffing levels in coming months.

The State Department feels the criticism is unfair. In its letter to Corker, the agency said there are only 20 fewer senior foreign service officers now than there were a year ago (1,048 compared with 1,068). This year's retirements are five fewer than in 2016, it said. Buyouts to induce early retirement of more than 600 diplomats are consistent with a directive to reduce the federal workforce.

It said reorganization is a work in progress, appealing for patience as officials make the department "more efficient and effective within a sustainable budget."

#6  Why stop at 8%?

A first-round target, gorb, pending the results of the review of current staffing and projects, with an eye toward changed priorities driving reorganization. Given the proposed 30% budget cut, future reductions of staff are clearly anticipated, suggested by the point about staffing still being 2,000 higher than in 2008 -- at the end of George W. Bush's presidency.

Top nuclear general says would REFUSE Trump's order to bomb North Korea if disagreed, insists 'we're not stupid people'
[DailyMail] - Air Force General John Hyten said he wouldn't drop a nuclear bomb if he thought Trump's order was illegal

- He said he's studied international war law, and that if it was an illegal order he wouldn't drop the bomb

- Hyten said instead he'd work with Trump to come up with another solution

- This comes amid mounting tensions with North Korea and Kim Jong Un
With all due respect, the General should learn to keep his effing mouth shut.
Yes. The poor dear is hung up on style instead of looking at substance, and on posturing publicly instead of doing his job by advisibg privately, then resigning in protest if he disagrees with his commander-in-chief's orders. But what odds President Trump would order a few MOABs instead of a nuke, completely obviating the need for the clever general's advice?

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria troops, allies retake most of last ISIS-held town
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian troops and allied fighters advanced on Saturday to capture most of Albu Kamal, a monitor said, in a tug-of-war over the ISIS group’s last urban stronghold in the country.

The town in Syria’s oil-rich Deir Ezzor province has changed hands several times, with government troops announcing its capture but losing it to a blistering ISIS counter-attack a week ago.

Syria’s army and Lebanese, Iranian and Iraqi loyalists re-entered Albu Kamal two days ago and by Saturday had taken most of it from IS, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"Syrian regime forces, (Lebanese) Hezbollah, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and Iraqi militias seized control on Saturday of more than 80 percent of Albu Kamal, after a huge attack that began Friday night," said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

"ISIS was pushed back to the northern and northeastern sectors of the city. Clashes are ongoing," Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The Britannia-based monitor said the fresh push came with heavy bombing raids by regime ally Russia, and that troops were advancing more "carefully" than in their previous assault to ensure their gains would not be rolled back.

A string of territorial defeats across northern and eastern Syria left Albu Kamal, near the border with Iraq, as the last significant town held by ISIS in the country.

Losing it to regime forces would cap the group’s reversion to a guerrilla organization with no urban base.

On Saturday, Syrian state television

aired live footage from Albu Kamal, showing plumes of smoke rising over the city’s skyline as kabooms echoed in the background.

It said the army was preparing to "storm the remaining areas" held by ISIS in Albu Kamal’s east.

"What has most impeded the Syrian army’s advance is the large amounts of mines left by ISIS (ISIS) and its attempt at using families as human shields," state television

Afghanistan
Pakistan Must Stop Supporting Terrorists: Waziri
[Tolo News] Addressing a joint presser of security agencies, the Defense Ministry front man Dawlat Waziri said the international community including the United States should convince Pakistain to stop supporting terrorists.

"Pakistain, very shamelessly, continues to support bully boyz and continues to shell rockets on Afghanistan provinces," Waziri said in response to a question about the recent cross-Durand Line incursions by Pakistain.

"Pakistain must stop supporting terrorists," he said.

Last week, more than 500 missiles landed in Kunar in the eastern part of Afghanistan after being fired off from across the Durand Line, local officials said.

The missiles landed in Shultan, Dangam, Shegal and Marwa districts in Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
‐ in the east of the country, displacing dozens of families, local officials told TOLOnews.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido stepped from behind the suit of armor, rapier in hand. Ciccolini snarled and reached for his own weapon...
the Defense Ministry front man said "the enemy is losing in Afghanistan".

He said bully boyz activities have increased by 13 percent this year but in the meantime, bully boyz suffered heavy losses this year, compared to last year.

"The movements of the enemy increased by 13 percent compared with last year and their casualties increased by 11 percent if compared with last year," he added.

"Terrorists wanted to move their hideouts to Afghanistan and it was the main reason for the increasing war in the country."

He said they call on the international community to further help Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.

At the same event, the Interior Affairs Ministry’s front man Najib Danish spoke out about achievements of the Afghan National Police across the country.

"The (Ministry of Interior’s) counternarcotic department launched 2,000 operations against (drugs) smugglers this year and tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
2,647 (suspected drugs smugglers)," he said.

He said the police force members carried out at least 100 operations recently and that "45 people, who were included in the recent insecurities were killed during Operation Danish".

Arabia
Source ‘Close to Royal Family’ Claims Saudi King Will Abdicate
This is a very interesting report. Note the news sources that this Afghan newspaper quotes, dear Reader.
[Tolo News] Speculation is rife that the Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n king, Salman bin Abdulaziz, plans to abdicate and pass the throne along to his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman next week.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
Breitbart News reported that the Saudi government has rejected these claims but on Thursday, the UK Daily Mail quoted a source "close to the royal family" as saying the king will vacate his throne next week.

According to this source, the 81-year-old king intends to "continue only as a ceremonial figurehead" while "handing over official leadership of the country to his son."

The crown prince, commonly referred to by his initials "MBS," is just 32 years old and already holds numerous posts in Saudi Arabia.

This comes after the Saudi King recently jugged
Please don't kill me!
11 princes, including a prominent billionaire, and dozens of current and former ministers in a sweeping crackdown.

A source told Daily Mail last week: "Unless something dramatic happens, King Salman
...either the largest species of Pacific salmon or the current Sheikh of the Burnin' Sands, Cutodian of the Two Holy Mosquesand Lord of Most of the Arabians....
will announce the appointment of MBS as King of Saudi Arabia next week. King Salman will play the role of the queen of England. He will only keep the title ’Custodian of the Holy Shrines.’"

Breitbart reported that this abdication strategy is supposed to secure MBS in power and allow him to concentrate on Saudi Arabia’s rapidly thawing cold war against Iran, which will include teaming up with Israel to take out Hezbollah in Leb

"MBS is convinced that he has to hit Iran and Hezbollah," the Daily Mail source said.

"MBS’s plan is to start the fire in Leb, but he’s hoping to count on Israeli military backing. He has already promised Israel billions of dollars in direct financial aid if they agree."

"MBS cannot confront Hezbollah in Leb without Israel. Plan B is to fight Hezbollah in Syria," said the source.

The Times of Israel notes that the Daily Mail report "could not be independently confirmed," and there was "no immediate reaction from Riyadh."

This reported stated that some suspect King Salman is suffering from dementia, which could help to explain why the monarchy might be quietly planning for an early transfer of power to the crown prince while denying any such plans are under consideration.

But the Times of Israel reported that the Israelis are not enthusiastic about the prospect of fighting another war with Hezbollah, which has a penchant for showing Israeli territory with poorly-aimed missiles while hiding its weapons in civilian areas so it can blame collateral deaths on the Israelis.

Eritrean diaspora stages protest in the Swedish capital
[Al Jazeera] Hundreds of Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
ns gathered outside the embassy of the east African nation in the Swedish capital Stockholm on Friday to protest against the recent arrest of teachers and the director of an Islamic school.

The arrest of Hajji Musa Mohammednur, president of the board of the Al Diaa Islamic School, and several other teachers triggered a rare protest in the capital Asmara on October 31.

Thousands marched towards the president's office, demanding the release of Mohammednur and the other detainees.

Mohammednur has opposed the government's school nationalisation policy that among other strictures bans the use of hijab, a headscarf worn by many Moslem women who feel it is part of their religion, and religious education in the school based in Asmara. The policy also affects Christian schools.

The arrest of Mohammednur "was the spark which unleashed the people's anger" in Eritrea and among the diaspora, Zein Shawkai, a political dissident who participated in the protest, told Al Jazeera.

The protest marked a first in Eritrea since the country gained independence in 1991 from Æthiopia following a 30-year war. The Eritrean state forbids any associations and gatherings.

The protesters in Stockholm included young and old Eritreans, Moslem and Christian, and a few Syrians who came to express solidarity. They hollered poorly rhymed slogans against the government demanding the removal of Eritrean President Isayas Afowerki: "Down, down Isayas" and "The people want to get rid of the regime".

On the other hand, Trump has tried hard, with considerable success, to restore constitutional government.
There is much more for him to do, but it is amazing to see how Podesta can argue the exact opposite of the truth without the slightest apparent sense of shame.

Tennessee imam says ‘Zionist terrorists’ stole Temple Mount from Muslims
[IsraelTimes] Somali-American AhmedulHadi Sharif warns followers 'the enemies of Allah will come and try to destroy' Mecca holy site

A Somali-American Imam told followers at the Islamic Center of Tennessee over the summer that "Zionist terrorists" stole Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque from Moslems.

"The Zionists, the number one forces of Evil in the world, had occupied and kidnapped that land long ago," AhmedulHadi Sharif said in a Friday sermon in July, newly translated and posted by watchdog group MEMRI this week. "And now they want to add al-Aqsa to their occupations. They kidnapped it."
Half hour video, courtesy of the mosque, can be seen at the link. After an initial two minutes in Arabic, the rest is mostly in English.
"If we lose Jerusalem, know that it is not going to stop there... The enemies of Allah will come and try to destroy the Kaaba," he said, referring to Islam’s holiest site in Mecca.

He clarified that "we do not hate the ethnic Jewish people, but we do hate the Zionist oppressors."

His sermon, first uploaded to the internet on July 24, came amid a spate of unrest in Jerusalem and the West Bank over the Temple Mount holy site that is home to al-Aqsa mosque.

Earlier that month, the holy site became the focus of a major crisis between Israeli authorities, Paleostinians, and Jordan over security measures taken at the entrances to the compound.

Metal detectors and cameras had been installed following a deadly attack in which three Arab Israelis emerged from the site and rubbed out two Israeli coppers using weapons that had been smuggled onto the Temple Mount.

The implementation of the measures set off daily unrest and festivities between Paleostinian protesters and Israeli police in and around East Jerusalem and the West Bank. The upgraded security measures were all ultimately removed.

Israeli troops raid home of Gush Etzion car-ramming terrorist
[IsraelTimes] Soldiers search the Halhul house of 17-year-old who injured two in Friday attack, encounter rock-throwing by residents.

Israeli security forces on Saturday raided the home of a 17-year-old Paleostinian terrorist who carried out a car-ramming attack in the central West Bank a day earlier, Hadashot news (formerly Channel 2) reported.

Forces searched the home of the attacker who rammed his car into two people in Gush Etzion south of Jerusalem, seriously injuring one of them. The assailant was shot and maimed when he exited the vehicle and attempted to stab soldiers.

Some rioting was reported during the operation in the village of Halhul, with residents throwing rocks at soldiers. The troops responded with non-lethal means. There were no reports of injuries among the Israeli forces.

On Friday the army set up checkpoints around the West Bank town. The family of the terrorist was also detained for questioning, the army said.
I'm not sure why the editors refuse to name the attacker, Az al-Din Kraja, 17.

Dostum Reportedly On His Way Home After 6 Months In Turkey
[Tolo News] The National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan front man Bashir Ahmad Tayyanj on Saturday said first Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
is preparing to return to Afghanistan after spending about six months in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
Dostum on Friday met with Ottoman Turkish president Rajab Tayeb Erdogan, which according to Tayyanj, was his last meeting in Turkey before returning home.

"An increase of Afghan students in Turkey, regulating Afghan refugees in Turkey and securing Turkey’s attention, a powerful actor, in Afghanistan’s issues were discussed. This was the end of the vice president’s agenda in Turkey and now he is preparing to return to Afghanistan," said Tayyanj.

For the past few months speculation has been rife as to why Dostum has remained in Turkey. Some have said he is there for medical treatment while others have said he is in exile.

News of his return, come however amid an ongoing investigation by the Attorney General Office’s (AGO) into the Dostum-Eshchi issue. Recently a primary court sentenced seven of Dostum’s bodyguards to eight years in prison after finding them guilty of illegally imprisoning former Jawzjan governor Ahmad Eshchi and of sexually abusing him.

"The AGO can investigate the allegations against the first vice president. But the court cannot rule in the case as a special court must be established," Abdul Wahid Farzaie, deputy head of Afghanistan's Lawyers Union said.

HoR delegation in Ankara talks
[Libya Herald] A group of members of the House of Representatives has called for closer relations with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
. The group, consisting of eight members who support the Presidency Council, arrived earlier during the week in Ankara at the invitation of the Ottoman Turkish government. During the week, they met President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
as well as member of the Ottoman Turkish parliaments foreign affairs committee and deputy foreign minister Ahmet Yildiz, and Turkey’s special envoy for Libya Emrullah Isler. They also met with the Ottoman Turkish Contractors Association.

Later in Istanbul, there were meetings with municipal officials and with the Foreign Economic Relations Board.

According to Benghazi member Ziyad Daghim, the visit ‐ in return for that by Isler to Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
last month ‐ was aimed at improving relations with Turkey and changing what he called "misconceptions" about it back in Libya.

Although Turkey maintains close relations with the PC and its government of national accord, it is viewed with suspicion in eastern Libya where the Beida-based government of Abdullah Thinni as well as the Libyan National Army and those around HoR president Ageela Saleh have been openly critical of it. They have accused it, along with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
, of interfering in Libyan affairs by supporting the Moslem Brüderbund and Islamist myrmidons. As a result, while Turkey was the first country to reopen its embassy in Tripoli and kept its consulate in Misrata open throughout the period of the diplomatic exodus from Libya, it has not reopened the consulate in Benghazi ‐ and for the moment has no plans to do so.

According to Daghim, the talks also covered the issue of outstanding payments to Ottoman Turkish companies.

The kidnapping of three Ottoman Turkish engineers in Obari at the beginning of the month and security for Ottoman Turkish companies in Libya or planning to go to Libya was also reportedly discussed, as was the requirement for Libyans to have visas to visit Turkey.

Aoun said on Saturday that he had spoken by telephone to the premier after his arrival in Gay Paree, and that Hariri said he would be back in Leb for Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Earlier, he tweeted that he was on his way to the airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh where he has been since his resignation.

"To say that I am held up in Saudi Arabia and not allowed to leave the country is a lie. I am on the way to the airport," Hariri tweeted.

Thinni government approves funding for 4th evaporator at Tobruk desalination plant
[Libya Herald] Plans dating back to 2013 to boost the water supply in Tobruk with the installation of a fourth evaporator at the town’s desalination plant are back on track with the Beida-based interim government of Abdullah Thinni approving a LD 29-million letter of credit (L/C) for international water technology company VA Tech Wabag.

The contract for a fourth evaporator was given in 2013, but the political crisis prevented it from being implemented.

According to CEO of the Austrian branch of Wabag, Mahmut Gedek, the fourth evaporator will have nothing to do with the existing plant which was built by La Belle France’s SIDEM between 1997 and 2000. It has seen a significant reduction in output because of maintenance problems since the revolution. The new evaporator, with a production capacity of 13,333 cubic metres of water a day, will have its own new seawater intake.

Once the L/C is issued, Wabag says that the work should take no more than 18 months.

Once the Yezidi family was brought to safety within liberated areas, they told Hawar that there were several families, mostly children and women, who still remained under ISIS control.

Kurdish MPs call on PM Abadi to disband Shiite militia in Tuz Khurmatu
[RUDAW.NET] Kurdish blocs in the Iraqi parliament have called on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to take urgent steps to halt aggression against the properties of Kurdish residents of Tuz Khurmatu being done by Shiite militia groups.

“We are calling on the prime minister of Iraq to take urgent and just steps to help stop aggression against the properties of citizens in [Tuz Khurmatu] and bring those perpetrators who have done these acts to justice, especially in Tuz Khurmatu,” the Kurdish parliamentary blocs said in a published statement.

They also demanded all groups in the town be disarmed, except for the local police.

The Kurdish blocs also demanded “quick assessment” of the extent of the damage and work done to allow displaced people to return home – including offering compensation.

Co-existence in these areas faces a real threat, they stated, “because if civilians do not feel comfortable and are not sure about their dignity, lives and houses, they will not return to their places.”

The Kurdish parties also warned of the spread of “deadly diseases” among those families who are sheltering temporarily in places unsuitable to survive the winter.

“As a month has passed since the events, nothing has been done on the ground and no serious measures have been taken by the Iraqi government to help return hope for the Kurdish people and no investigation has been carried out against those who burned and blew up and looted their households, properties and shops.”

Iraqi forces, including the Hashd al-Shaabi, took over control of disputed areas in Kirkuk, Diyala, and Nineveh provinces since October 16 including Kirkuk, Khanaqin, Tuz Khurmatu, Makhmour, Zummar, and Shingal.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) warned at the time of the possibility of a humanitarian crisis if confrontation and insecurity escalate in the disputed areas, causing more people to flee their homes.

When clashes broke out after the federal forces' takeover, Abadi claimed only one "incident" had taken place, but it "did not lead to a confrontation."

“I warn, and I repeat my warning, any aggression against our citizens in Kirkuk, be it Kurds, Turkmen, Arab, or Christian, is an aggression against us... We will not allow this aggression.”

The United Nations and Human Rights Watch reported civilian deaths, looting, arson, and forced displacements, mainly of Kurds, in Kirkuk and Tuz Khurmatu.

A Kurdish MP in the Iraqi parliament, Aram Sheikh Mohammed, called on Abadi to deploy special forces of the Iraqi army to take control of Tuz in cooperation with local police in early November.

Kurdish town hit by quake refuses aid from Iran-backed militia
[RUDAW.NET] A militia group of the Iranian-backed mainly Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi has delivered aid to the earthquake-hit areas in Sulaimani province on Thursday, Kurdish officials said. One of the Kurdish towns where the aid was destined refused to accept the help claiming that the group is responsible for human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
violations in Tuz Khurmatu, southeast of Kirkuk.

The Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq Shiite militia sent tents and other basic needs to the Kurdish towns of Darbandikhan and Sartaki Bamo southeast of Erbil, near the Kurdistan-Iran border.

Darbandikhan is the worst earthquake-hit area in the Kurdistan Region where several people died, many more sustained injuries, and the town’s dam was damaged in the earthquake.

Hakim Adil, the mayor of Sartaki Bamo, confirmed the group planned to send the aid. He told Rudaw on Friday that their town decided to block the delivery. He explained the Iraqi Red Islamic Thingy was also cooperating with the Hashd group, which was trying to deliver tents.

Rudaw contacted Nasih Mullah Hassan, the mayor of Darbandikhan, but he declined to comment on the issue.

Town resident Fryad Abdullah, who recorded a video of the aid delivery to Darbandikhan, said the Shiite group in fact handed the aid to some of the affected people there. He claimed officials welcomed the aid with "open arms."

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Halabja, Kurdistan Region, near the Iran-Iraq border Sunday evening and could be felt throughout the Middle East. Darbandikhan is about 78 km west of Halabja and in Sulaimani province.

Iraqi forces, supported by the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi forces, took over the oil-rich Kirkuk province, and other disputed areas in October.

Spanish PM calls 'bodies on the streets' threats a lie
[RUDAW.NET] Alleged comments by Spanish government officials of leaving "bodies on the streets" are "intolerable" claims by officials in Catalonia, expressed Madrid.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dismissed comments on Friday from Catalan leftist politician Marta Rovira who claimed Spanish government sources had threatened to send troops into Catalonia if the region continues its independence push.

Rajoy said the claim of "bodies on the streets" was "an enormous lie" and "shameful."

He said that "in life, not everything goes," and that while people may defend their stances as they wish, this was "intolerable."

The people of Catalonia voted in favor of seceding from Spain on October 1. The binding referendum was approved by the parliament and independence was declared on October 27.

Madrid responded by dissolving the regional government and scheduling snap elections for December 21.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and his ministers were stripped of their posts by the central government in Madrid.

Puigdemont and four ministers fled to Brussels and were nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
by Belgian officials. They now await an extradition court hearing scheduled for December 4.

The judge in the case heard jail conditions where Puigdemont would be held in Spain.

Spain’s Interior Ministry confirmed that it had sent a document answering 14 questions sent by the prosecutor, regarding cell conditions, security guarantees, recreation, hygiene and food at the jails to which Puigdemont and four of his ex-cabinet ministers with him in Brussels would be sent.

Spanish police shoot "Frenchman" who shouted 'Allahu akbar’
Scare quotes in the headline are mine.
[IsraelTimes] Officers mistakenly suspected the man, of Moroccan origin, was carrying a weapon; his life is not in danger and he is being treated in hospital

Police in Spain shot and injured an unarmed Frenchie on Saturday at a toll station near the French border, who officers said was shouting ’holy shit! Allahu akbar.’

The officers mistakenly suspected he had a weapon, a police statement said, adding that they do not expect to open a terrorism investigation.

The man, of Moroccan origin, was travelling with a woman in a vehicle registered in La Belle France and approached the toll by the border town of La Jonquera in the north of the country in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police said a Guardia Civil patrol was alerted because the man had a "strange" attitude and "seemed to be manipulating something inside the vehicle".

"The police asked him to get out. He finally got out with something in his hands and he moved towards the officers," said a spokesperson for the Catalan police.

The spokesperson said that, according to the coppers present, the man "shouted ’holy shit! Allahu akbar'(God is greatest)".

"The coppers repeatedly asked him to stop, shot in the air to intimidate him but as he continued to move forward, they shot him in the hip," he said.

The man "then undressed" and "appeared to suffer from mental problems".

According to the Guardia Civil his life "is not in danger" and he is being cared for in a hospital in Gerone.

Police say an investigation is underway to establish the facts about what happened.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
In first since 2007, Gaza’s border with Egypt opens under PA control
[IsraelTimes] Cairo opens Rafah crossing for three days on a humanitarian basis, though schedule for permanent use unclear.
Unclear means the schedule will be discusses at an undefined later date -- very much jam tomorrow and jam yesterday, but never jam today.
Gazoo’s border crossing into Egypt is running under the Paleostinian Authority’s control for the first time in a decade.

Egypt opened the Rafah crossing point Saturday for three days on a humanitarian basis for the first time since Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", ceded control of Gazoo’s crossings with Israel and Egypt to the Western-backed PA.

In 2007, Hamas wrested control of Gazoo by force, provoking an Israeli-Egyptian blockade that severely restricted the movement of most of Gazoo’s 2 million inhabitants.

Hamas, a terrorist group which seeks Israel’s destruction, withdrew from the crossings on November 1, implementing the first step of an Egyptian-brokered deal to end the rift with PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
’s Fatah party.

The day the PA retook control of Gazoo’s crossings, it announced the Rafah crossing would be permanently reopened on November 15, after years of Cairo allowing only intermittent exit through the vital passageway.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the crossing has remained closed until Saturday, and it was not clear when the permanent reopening would take place.

Talks are to resume in Cairo this month to discuss the PA’s expansion of its rule over Gazoo and broader national issues. The PA is supposed to retake full civil control of the Gazoo Strip by December 1, ending 10 years of Hamas rule over the enclave.

The hold-up at the border is apparently due to ongoing disagreements between the PA and Hamas over security arrangements in the Strip.

Hamas is refusing to disarm its military wing as Abbas wants.
And since they never will disarm, since being armed is their reason to exist, not to mention it keeps the PA from arresting them all, or worse...
PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has said a number of times that his ministries could not govern the Strip without full control over security.

The PA wants to implement a 2005 agreement that would see European observers stationed at the Rafah Crossing, as well as security coordination with Israel.

group, is also thought to be one of Cairo’s concerns.
Ynet adds:
Some 30,000 Gazoo residents have submitted requests to leave Gazoo to Egypt over the past few months.
But according to Al Ahram:
Paleostine’s envoy to Egypt Diab al-Loh said that Egypt has decided to open the crossing for three days starting Saturday for students, Paleostinians who hold residency in Egypt, and humanitarian cases.

VIDEO: Instructor arrested for attacking conservative students
[CampusReform] A University of Illinois graduate instructor was arrested for assaulting two students during an anti-Trump protest Thursday, stealing the phone of one student and throwing it on the sidewalk.

Tariq Khan is a PhD candidate at the university and has taught courses such as "Constructing Race in America" and "U.S. Gender History since 1877." He is also involved with various anarchist and communist organizations including Black Rose Anarchist Federation and Antifa, in addition to working with the undergraduate socialist students.
Golly. A triple threat.
The event Thursday began as a demonstration to air grievances about President Trump one year after his election. Khan spoke to students, urging them to resist the president’s agenda and fight fascism, but when his speech targeted Turning Point USA members on campus, conservative students who were present took notice.

Joel Valdez, executive board member and campus activism coordinator for TPUSA, asked, "Don’t you have anything better to do? Don’t you have kids?" Khan immediately charged from the Alma Mater statue and accused Valdez of threatening his children.

In video of the altercation obtained by Campus Reform Khan is seen intimidating and confronting two students: throwing a punch at one and stealing and destroying Valdez’s cell phone.

The incident has been reported to University of Illinois police, and Khan was placed under arrest and issued a notice to appear to appear in court for criminal damage to property, with police valuing the cell phone at $700.

This violent altercation comes three weeks after Khan aided the campus student government in shutting down the university’s homecoming parade for including a float celebrating the school’s former mascot "Chief Illiniwek."

Five militants, one Indian soldier killed in gun battle in held Kashmir
[DAWN] Five suspected holy warriors and an Indian air force commando were killed during a fierce gunbattle on Saturday in India-held Kashmire, which also left another soldier injured, the Indian military said.

The shootout began when soldiers cordoned off a neighbourhood in the northern area of Hajin following a tip-off that armed holy warriors were hiding there, said army front man Colonel Rajesh Kalia.

"Five holy warriors have been killed in the operation," Kalia told AFP. "One IAF (India Air Force) soldier was killed and another army soldier was injured."

On Friday a turban and a police officer were killed in the outskirts of Srinagar during a brief shootout.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmire's mostly Moslem population and most people support the separatists' cause. Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown.

Europe
Crunch time for Merkel to build coalition or face new polls
[TheLocal.de] German Chancellor Angela Merkel heads back into tense coalition talks on Saturday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
heads back into tense coalition talks on Saturday in a last-ditch effort to forge a coalition government and avert a political crisis in Europe's biggest economy.

The veteran leader won a September 24th vote without a clear majority for her conservative CDU/CSU bloc, largely due to the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), and must now build an unlikely alliance with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) and left-leaning Greens.

Their deep policy differences however, especially on immigration and the environment, have hobbled the month-long negotiating marathon, leading the players to miss a Thursday deadline and declare they will push on until Sunday evening.

Until and unless the motley crew of four parties, which spans the mainstream political spectrum, strikes a deal, Germany's government remains in effective limbo with Merkel serving as caretaker chancellor.

If they fail, Germany is headed for likely snap elections, which would leave Merkel increasingly exposed to a rising band of critics within her own ranks and could further boost the anti-Islam AfD.

Merkel, no longer deemed invincible after delivering a historically poor election result, "now faces the most difficult task of her leadership so far," judged the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily.

IDF tank fires warning shot at Syrian forces near Golan border
[IsraelTimes] Assad troops were fortifying a position in the demilitarized zone along the Israel-Syria cease-fire line, in violation of truce agreement

An IDF tank fired warning shots at the forces of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
near the Golan Heights cease-fire line between the two countries on Saturday, amid increased tensions along Israel’s northern borders.

The Israeli military said the warning shots came because Syrian forces were constructing a fortified position in the demilitarized zone that runs along the border, in violation of the 1974 truce agreement between Israel and Syria. The agreement "prohibits the entry of heavy construction tools or military vehicles into the demilitarized zone," the army said.

There were no reports of casualties on the Syrian side.

The army also said it had filed a complaint with the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
peacekeeper force stationed on the Golan, which oversee the cease-fire.

The incident occurred near the Druze town of Hader on the Syrian side. The town was the site of a suicide kaboom earlier in the month that killed nine Syrian Druze and then sparked festivities between Syrian government forces and rebels.

That incident led to an unusual move from Israel, which said it would defend the Druze population of the village.

In a series of tweets, the army’s Arabic front man Avichay Adraee said the IDF was prepared to "support the village residents and work to prevent any harm or the occupation of the village, out of a commitment to the Druze population."

The statement reflected ongoing pressure on Israeli leaders from the Druze communities in the Galilee and on the Golan to help their coreligionists across the border who are often caught in the crossfire between Sunni rebels and Alawite and Shiite pro-government forces.

Over the past six years, Israel has clung to a hands-off policy toward the war, only getting involved when one of its "red lines" is transgressed. These "red lines" include the violation of Israeli illusory sovereignty through deliberate or accidental attacks, Iranian-supported militias taking positions on the Golan border, and attempts to transfer advanced weapons to the Hezbollah terrorist group.

Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan
Doug Stanton
Scribner, 2009

In case you missed it:
Movie Trailer: 12 Strong (youtube)

So of the books I have mentioned in this column, "If they made a movie, nobody would believe it." Well, here is a book for you.

From the introduction:

Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

There are a lot of big names associated with this upcoming film, which always makes me cringe a bit, as sometimes star power can interfere with the story. The book gets into detail about those who participate in this mission.

Page 71

Like most everybody on the team, Bennett spoke Arabic and had been trained in the art of sniper fire, mortar launch, and high altitude parachute jumps from 25,000 feet, during which he would breathe from a mini tank of oxygen strapped to his arm. He and Diller were keeping an eye on an eager group of younger gunfighters, average age thirty-two, each with about eight years in SF. "This is your first rodeo," Diller had told junior weapons specialist Sean Coffers, who had joined the unit from the 101st Airborne. "You're sticking with me." Nearly everybody was married and had children; there were more than a few broken marriages in the rearview mirror. Sitting next to Bennett was Vern Michaels, the good-humored senior communications officer, and junior engineer Patrick Remington. These six guys were the A-Team, the Alpha cell, of the twelve-man detachment.

The book preceding and following the quote goes on to detail all the members of the group.

Those of you who have ridden will be able to fill in the gaps about riding long distances when not in horse shape. The book does a fine job describing the ailments of being out of horse shape or the plain never-been-riding-before joys.

Page 181

The ride was exhilarating, at first. It seemed to Spencer that every few steps his horse would turn and look at him and say, "You're sure a big bastard. Why don't you get off and walk?"

Spencer believed the horse was actually huffing and puffing, as if to be melodramatic. The stirrups were short and Spencer's knees were practically in his chest. The horse ambled along the rocky path. Spencer's back started to ache. He was wearing his load-bearing vest crammed with ammo, grenades, water. It weighed about forty pounds. His M-4, which weighed another seven pounds, was slung across his chest.

The story leads up to events in Mazar-i-Sharif.

Pages 272-273

Soon after moving into the fort, nearly everyone on the teams grew deathly ill. When fresh water had failed to arrive on a resupply drop, they'd taken their chances drinking from the local tap, and now everyone regretted the decision. Ben Milo was struck with a case of diarrhea that he felt would kill him (it would last nine days). He and the rest of his team were camped in the three miserable rooms in the northern end of the fort, on the second floor. At one point, Milo grew so sick that he had to sleep in the bathroom, hurriedly scuttling between his sleeping bag and the dark hole in the floor a few feet away.

The very air in the fort seemed diseased. The men explored its maze of dank rooms and dark passageways, the halogen beams of their flashlights passing over rough mud walls that sprouted tufts of animal hair and straw - crude building materials - and revealed odd sights. Some rooms were filled floor to ceiling with small sticks; others were piled high with shoes; some seemed to have been the scene of horrific struggles, the floors tracked with heavy boots and dried pools of blood. After a half hour of wandering, the men would step out of a doorway and into another part of the fort without any idea of how they'd arrived there. The Magic Castle, some of them called it.

So with any book turned into a movie, the book is able to get into the gritty details which movies are unwilling, unable, or just do not have the time to account. I read this book many years ago, and it is a fantastic read on its own. I would suggest the book to anyone interested in the movie so that the movie is more than Thor giving Leonidas' 300 liners, and I mean that as no insult to Mr. Hemsworth; as I said sometimes star power can get in the way though if anyone can pull this off, it will be him.

Link is to Amazon.

Looks at Movies
I came across a fine documentary the other day: Task Force Faith. It covers the activities of Regimental Combat Team 31 during the fighting surrounding The Chosin Reservoir. It is a straightforward play by play of the various actions with accounts from American survivors.

This Week in Emergency Preparedness
I missed by bi-annual nag about checking smoke detectors and electronic safe batteries at the last daylight savings adjustment. Quite a bit has happened since the last discussion. I saw that 'first responders' were mentioned here and there during Veterans Day, you know, whatever. Not saying LEO/EMT/Fire don't see the crap, but I want to talk about that term, First Responders.

In my book, First Responder means the first to show up to a bad deal with specialized training and equipment. That is, not the first on scene.

When something bad happens to you, you are the first responder. How involved and how well trained you want to be is up to you. Being able to communicate a situation goes miles for those who will be responding. Example, fence builders started a fire. Calling it in promptly, with an accurate location and approximate size and travel direction saved a whole lot of headache as the nearest department was able to get to it in short order, and it was out before the front moved in. Same with a car wreck; nobody expects you to leave the kid in the car, grab the JAWS from the trunk, and start extricating a rollover in the ditch. Even if that is you, call it in and get help rolling before putting on the cape. Something to think about in case you find yourself in a spot where hell is breaking out like a cat from a washtub.

Hariri: I’ll be in Lebanon to mark Independence Day on Wednesday
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
has said he plans on traveling back to Leb by Wednesday in time for his country’s independence day celebrations.

Hariri, speaking to news hounds after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Gay Paree, said he will be speaking with Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
upon his arrival and discuss the matter of his recent resignation as prime minister.

Leb will mark Independence Day on Wednesday and there have been concerns about whether Hariri will attend the annual celebrations. The ceremony is usually headed by the president, prime minister and parliament speaker.

It is the first official comment on when Hariri is likely to be back in Beirut since his Nov. 4 resignation through a broadcast on a Saudi-owned TV station from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
NNA quoted a presidential statement saying that Hariri informed the president that he arrived in Gay Paree with his wife earlier Saturday.

...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
reported that the legitimate forces are moving towards the Directorate of Arhab after taking control of nearly ninety percent of the Directorate of Nahm.

The latest progress was accompanied by other progression towards the Directorate of Erb in Sanaa towards Qutbin, Bani Mohammed and Masura amid major engineering effort to the construction of mountain roads and de-mining.

The national army advanced towards al-’Arqat, al-Madfoun, Qudah and Da’a in the direction of the Khawlan and Bani Hashish, to join the fronts towards Nqail Ben Ghilan - the most important goals before reaching the heart of Sanaa.

The progress came under a heavy air cover of the coalition’s support for the legitimacy and artillery shelling of the coalition and national army.

In similar context, Yemeni sources reported that Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias kidnapped about 12 civilians from the Directorate of Arhab, north of Sanaa, and blew up three houses.

The sources added that the Houthis attacked several villages in the Directorate, including Beit al-Hafn, Arshan and al-Ghula and launched raids on homes.

These developments come in light of the progress of the National Army in Nahm, which became the outskirts of the Directorate of welcome.
