VA Study Shows Parasite From Vietnam May Be Killing Vets
A half a century after serving in Vietnam, hundreds of veterans have a new reason to believe they may be dying from a silent bullet ‐ test results show some men may have been infected by a slow-killing parasite while fighting in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

The Department of Veterans Affairs this spring commissioned a small pilot study to look into the link between liver flukes ingested through raw or undercooked fish and a rare bile duct cancer. It can take decades for symptoms to appear. By then, patients are often in tremendous pain, with just a few months to live.

Of the 50 blood samples submitted, more than 20 percent came back positive or bordering positive for liver fluke antibodies, said Sung-Tae Hong, the tropical medicine specialist who carried out the tests at Seoul National University in South Korea.

"It was surprising," he said, stressing the preliminary results could include false positives and that the research is ongoing.

Northport VA Medical Center spokesman Christopher Goodman confirmed the New York facility collected the samples and sent them to the lab. He would not comment on the findings, but said everyone who tested positive was notified.

Gerry Wiggins, who served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969, has already lost friends to the disease. He was among those who got the call.

"I was in a state of shock," he said. "I didn’t think it would be me."

The 69-year-old, who lives in Port Jefferson Station, New York, didn’t have any symptoms when he agreed to take part in the study, but hoped his participation could help save lives. He immediately scheduled further tests, discovering he had two cysts on his bile duct, which had the potential to develop into the cancer, known as cholangiocarcinoma. They have since been removed and ‐ for now ‐ he’s doing well.

Though rarely found in Americans, the parasites infect an estimated 25 million people worldwide.

Endemic in the rivers of Vietnam, the worms can easily be wiped out with a handful of pills early on, but left untreated they can live for decades without making their hosts sick. Over time, swelling and inflammation of the bile duct can lead to cancer. Jaundice, itchy skin, weight loss and other symptoms appear only when the disease is in its final stages.

The VA study, along with a call by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of New York for broader research into liver flukes and cancer-stricken veterans, began after The Associated Press raised the issue in a story last year. The reporting found that about 700 veterans with cholangiocarcinoma have been seen by the VA in the past 15 years. Less than half of them submitted claims for service-related benefits, mostly because they were not aware of a possible connection to Vietnam. The VA rejected 80 percent of the requests, but decisions often appeared to be haphazard or contradictory, depending on what desks they landed on, the AP found.

The numbers of claims submitted reached 60 in 2017, up from 41 last year. Nearly three out of four of those cases were also denied, even though the government posted a warning on its website this year saying veterans who ate raw or undercooked freshwater fish while in Vietnam might be at risk. It stopped short of urging them to get ultrasounds or other tests, saying there was currently no evidence the vets had higher infection rates than the general population.

"We are taking this seriously," said Curt Cashour, a spokesman with the Department of Veterans Affairs. "But until further research, a recommendation cannot be made either way."

Veteran Mike Baughman, 65, who was featured in the previous AP article, said his claim was granted early this year after being denied three times. He said the approval came right after his doctor wrote a letter saying his bile duct cancer was "more likely than not" caused by liver flukes from the uncooked fish he and his unit in Vietnam ate when they ran out of rations in the jungle. He now gets about $3,100 a month and says he’s relieved to know his wife will continue to receive benefits after he dies. But he remains angry that other veterans’ last days are consumed by fighting the same government they went to war for as young men.

"In the best of all worlds, if you came down with cholangiocarcinoma, just like Agent Orange, you automatically were in," he said, referring to benefits granted to veterans exposed to the toxic defoliant sprayed in Vietnam. "You didn’t have to go fighting."

Baughman, who is thin and weak, recently plucked out "Country Roads" on a bass during a jam session at his cabin in West Virginia. He wishes the VA would do more to raise awareness about liver flukes and to encourage Vietnam veterans to get an ultrasound that can detect inflammation.

"Personally, I got what I needed, but if you look at the bigger picture with all these other veterans, they don’t know what necessarily to do," he said. "None of them have even heard of it before. A lot of them give me that blank stare like, ’You’ve got what?'"

Spengler: Angela Merkel's Feet of Clay
h/t Instapundit
The collapse overnight of negotiations to form a new German government is yet another shock to the liberal world order, not of the same magnitude as the Brexit vote or the U.S. presidential election, but of the same character. Chancellor Angela Merkel's tenure in office is now in jeopardy. After failing to form a coalition between the odd trio of Christian Democrats, Free Democrats and Greens, Merkel may have to call new elections, which are likely to produce the same intractable stalemate as before. There are many ways in which the deep division in German opinion about the migrant flood might be papered over--Merkel's partners in the outgoing government, the Social Democrats, could change their mind and remain in a coalition with the Christian Democrats--but the crack in German society has been exposed and will only deepen in the future.

The migrant issue is the elephant in Merkel's parlor. The Christian Democrat-Social Democrat coalition was Germany's equivalent of Washington's Swamp Fusion Party and tolerated no criticism of Merkel's decision to let almost a million and a half migrants (some of whom actually were Syrian war refugees) into Germany during 2016 and 2017. A protest vote brought smaller parties into the Bundestag on an anti-migrant platform; in Germany's eastern half, the Alternative fur Deutschland swept the ballots, and in the West, the small Free Democrats won votes on a platform of tax cuts, reducing immigration, and skepticism about Euro bailouts of Greece and Spain. The Social Democrats imploded while the Christian Democrats lost ground.

...A great deal of the present problem is the result of Merkel's incompetence. Nearly 300,000 Bulgarians and Romanians entered Britain in 2015 right after their countries joined the European Community. That explains a great deal of the Brexit vote. The Germans suffer from a massive labor shortage, especially in the construction industry, and the Eastern Europeans might have helped. The Germans would not have objected to European immigrants who can assimilate into their society as much as they do to Muslims who cannot. The European Community's blanket policy of free migration among its members makes it extremely difficult to manage immigration even when it might be beneficial rather than burdensome.

Now Germany is split between ordinary citizens who want to hold on to some notion of German-ness, even if they are not quite sure what that means, and those who want to liquidate German culture as a remedy for war guilt. A natural conservative majority exists in theory, but does not exist in practice because no German party can articulate a coherent, let alone an acceptable, message of German particularism. I do not anticipate a good outcome from this polarization. It is nonetheless instructive that even the long-suffering Germans do not want to be Guinea pigs for globalism.

#1  A great deal of the present problem is the result of Merkel's incompetence.

Assuming Merkel's objective has been inflicting maximal damage on Western nations one could hardly call Merkel incompetent.

Merkel is competently malicious.

Never Mind ‘Trumpism': What is ‘Deplorablism'?
h/t Instapundit
There is lots of talk about a new nationalist populist worker movement.

Supposedly, something quite new would institutionalize, define, and solidify the Trump base of aging Reagan Democrats, old Ross Perot independents, Tea Party remnants, newly disaffected Democratic workers, and a few returning libertarians and paleocons. Certainly, together they helped to swung the election in 2016.

But what exactly would be the formal agenda of the proverbial deplorables and irredeemables? And how would it differ all that much from conservative Republicanism of generations past?

After all, despite a much-hyped conservative civil war, a bitter primary, and a NeverTrump movement that won’t quiet, 90 percent of the Republicans in 2016 still voted for Trump. These voters assumed, like deplorable and irredeemable Democrats and Independents, that Trump would push conservative agendas. And they were largely proved correct.

After 10 months of governance, Trump’s deregulations, a foreign policy of principled realism, energy agendas, judicial appointments, efforts at tax reform and health care recalibration, cabinet appointments, and reformulation at the Departments of Education, the EPA, and Interior seem so far conservative to the core.

...So what drives deplorablism?

It is not so much an ideological or even political movement as it is a spiritual and psychological frame of mind that is fed up with hypocrisies of the proverbial establishment, bicoastal cultural elites, and the deep administrative state.

Mueller probing Kushner's 2016 attempts to block UNSC settlement resolution
Special counsel for the United States Department of Justice Robert Mueller is investigating an attempt by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to block the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 condemning Israeli settlement activity, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The probe is part of a larger investigation by Mueller into Kushner and his conversations with foreign leaders, including Israelis, during the two month transition period between the November election and the time that Trump took office.

Under the Obama Administration the US abstained and was the only one of the 14 countries on the UNSC not to approve the measure in December 2016.

But the decision not to use its veto power to block the move, something it did in 2011, was widely seen as a form of tacit approval by the Obama Administration.

The Trump team’s opposition was well known at the time. Trump, then president-elect, issued a number of tweets on the matter.

"The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!," he tweeted.

He issued another one after former US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke against settlement activity and explained the US position on the vote.

"We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect. They used to have a great friend in the US, but..," Trump wrote.

Prior to the election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with both presidential candidates, Trump and Democratic contender Hillary Clinton.

Boston Teacher Once Imprisoned in N. Korea ID'd as Man Burned in Mission Bay Park
A 38-year-old man found ablaze in an open area near Mission Bay Park, and whose death was likely the result of an accident or suicide, was an English teacher who gained notoriety seven years ago when he was imprisoned in North Korea and released with the help of former President Jimmy Carter.

An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer found Aijalon Gomes on fire in a dirt lot off the 5200 block of Pacific Highway late Friday night, according to San Diego police.

Gomes, who had recently moved to San Diego from his native Boston, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Though initially suspicious, Gomes' death did not appear to be a homicide, SDPD Lt. Todd Griffin said.

"The preliminary investigation indicates the death is not a homicide but rather an accidental death or suicide," he said.

The lieutenant added, however, that a final ruling would be on hold until the county Medical Examiner's Office completes its review of the case.
Now, the weird stuff
In January 2010, Gomes was arrested in North Korea for illegally entering the country from China. He was sentenced to eight years of hard labor and fined $700,000. In July of that year, Gomes attempted suicide while in custody, according to North Korean news accounts. The following month, Carter traveled to the East Asian nation to call on its leadership to release the high-profile prisoner. Gomes was set free a short time later and returned to Boston, accompanied by the former president.

POTUS calls father of freed UCLA player an 'ungrateful fool'
[ABC] President Donald Trump started off his first day of Thanksgiving vacation by resuming his taunts of the father of a UCLA basketball player detained for shoplifting in China, saying Wednesday that he was an "ungrateful fool."

In a series of tweets fired off before dawn, the president complained yet again that LaVar Ball, father of LiAngelo Ball, hasn't given him credit for the release of his son and two other UCLA basketball players from detention in China.

Tweeting from his Florida vacation home, Trump said: "It wasn't the White House, it wasn't the State Department, it wasn't father LaVar's so-called people on the ground in China that got his son out of a long term prison sentence - IT WAS ME."

"Too bad! LaVar is just a poor man's version of Don King, but without the hair," he said, referencing the flamboyant boxing promoter whom Trump once saluted as "a phenomenal person" despite a conviction for manslaughter.

The Wagons Are Starting To Circle Around Al Franken
[Hot Air] Isn’t it interesting that last week, when there was one accuser, the calls for Franken to quit were loudest. Now that there’s a second accuser, they’ve begun to quiet down. You would think it’d be the opposite.

It’s almost as if the initial "Franken must go" stuff was disingenuous, a cry that was safe to make when it was most likely to go unheeded. After CNN’s report on what Franken allegedly did seven years ago at the Minnesota State Fair raised the odds of more misbehavior surfacing, this is no longer an easy opportunity to virtue-signal. If Democrats don’t grudgingly line up behind him, Franken really might go. More importantly, if they don’t draw a line in the sand in front of Franken, many other Democrats (and Republicans) may be forced out for worse sins than what Franken’s accused of if the exposes get rolling on Capitol Hill. Gotta defend the tribe, and defending the tribe starts at Franken.

Undercover Informant Confronted FBI Handlers About Uranium One Deal, Was Told ‘Politics' Was Involved
[The Hill via Hot Air] The Hill has a follow-up report on the blockbuster from last month about the FBI’s uncovering of a Russian bribery and extortion plot to gain access to the U.S. nuclear market. The new report rebuts claims that the undercover investigation had no connection to the Uranium One sale to Russia’s Rosatom. As an example, Reuters reported last week that undercover informant William Campbell never mentioned the Rosatom purchase of Uranium One during interviews:

Skipping down a bit:

Campbell engaged in conversations with his Russian colleagues about the efforts of the Washington entity and others to gain influence with the Clintons and the Obama administration. He also listened as visiting Russians used racially tinged insults to boast about how easy they found it to win uranium business under Obama, according to a source familiar with Campbell’s planned testimony to Congress.
Emphasis added.

So very Russian.

US slaps new sanctions on North Korean, Chinese firms
[AlAhram] The Trump administration imposed new sanctions on a slew of North Korean shipping firms and Chinese trading companies Tuesday in its latest push to isolate the rogue nation over its nuclear weapons development and deprive it of revenue.

The Treasury Department also designated a North Korean corporation involved in exporting workers overseas. The action came a day after the United States returned North Korea to its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

"These designations include companies that have engaged in trade with North Korea cumulatively worth hundreds of millions of dollars," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. "We are also sanctioning the shipping and transportation companies, and their vessels, that facilitate North Korea's trade and its deceptive maneuvers."

Among the companies targeted were four Chinese-based companies and one Chinese individual said to have deep commercial ties with North Korea. The sanctions were imposed under a September executive order that opened the way for the U.S. to punish foreign companies dealing with the North. It bars those sanctioned from holding U.S. assets or doing business with Americans.

The Dandong Kehua Economy & Trade Co., Ltd., Dandong Xianghe Trading Co., Ltd., and Dandong Hongda Trade Co. Ltd. are alleged to have exported about $650 million worth of goods to North Korea and imported more than $100 million from North Korea since 2013. The goods included notebook computers, anthracite coal, iron and other commodities and ferrous products.

Also sanctioned was Chinese national Sun Sidong and his company, Dandong Dongyuan Industrial Co., said to have exported more than $28 million worth of goods to the North.

The targeting of Chinese companies is a potential sore point with Beijing, whose help Trump is counting on to put an economic squeeze on Pyongyang.

China recently sent its highest-level envoy to North Korea in two years to discuss the tense state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula.

As part of its effort to stymie North Korean transportation networks, Treasury sanctioned North Korea's Maritime Administration and its transport ministry, six North Korean shipping and trading companies and 20 of their vessels, which are all North Korean-flagged.

It accused North Korea of deceptive shipping practices, including ship-to-ship transfers, which is prohibited under U.N. sanctions that have been imposed in response to Pyongyang's rapid tempo of nuclear and ballistic missile tests. The Treasury statement included aerial photos of what it said was Korea Kumbyol Trading Company's vessel Rye Song Gang 1 possibly transferring oil to evade sanctions that have restricted fuel exports to the North.

Also sanctioned was the Korea South-South Cooperation Corporation said to have exported North Korean workers to China, Russia, Cambodia and Poland to generate revenue for the government.

When President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
announced the terror designation of North Korea on Monday, he promised to intensify the "maximum pressure" campaign against Pyongyang with the "highest level" of sanctions yet ‐ part of a rolling effort to compel it to negotiate over its nuclear program which poses an emerged threat to the U.S. mainland.

US Navy aircraft carrying 11 passengers crashes into sea near Japan
[ABC] A U.S. Navy aircraft with 11 passengers and crew crashed into the Philippine Sea on Wednesday on its return to the USS Ronald Reagan, according to the Navy's 7th Fleet.
Likely (but unconfirmed) a C2-A Greyhound as depicted here
The crash, which took place southeast of Okinawa, Japan, happened at 2:45 p.m. local time, which is 12:45 a.m. ET.

The USS Ronald Reagan is conducting search and rescue operations, the Navy said. Conditions of the 11 passengers is not known. The cause of the crash is also unknown.

The USS Ronald Reagan is currently operating in the Philippine Sea. The ship was taking part in Annual Exercise 2017 (AE17), a bilateral field-training exercise with the Japanese Navy conducted in waters off Japan from Nov. 16 to 26.

It is one of three carriers currently operating in the area, along with the USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt. They took part in a military exercise a little over a week ago as a show of strength toward North Korea.

HATE HOAX: Racist Graffiti At High School Was Written By.... ‘Non-White' Student
[Daily Caller] The student who wrote racist graffiti at a high school in Missouri last week is reportedly "non-white."

Graffiti reading "White Lives Matter" and containing a racial slur was found written on a bathroom mirror at Parkway Central High School.

In a Tuesday report from Fox2, the school district said that the student who wrote it was "non-white" but did not give a name.

Despite the revelation that the graffiti was not in fact written by a white person, the school district argued that fact "does not diminish the hurt it caused or the negative impact it has had on our community."

UNSEALED: Fusion GPS Bank Records Show Russia-Related Payments
[Daily Caller] A federal court unsealed documents in a lawsuit over Fusion GPS’s bank records on Tuesday, revealing new details of payments made last year to the opposition research firm that commissioned the infamous Trump dossier.

The documents also shed new light on requests made by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence about payments that Fusion GPS made to journalists.

The records were unsealed in response to a ruling made last week by Richard Leon, a federal judge in the district court in Washington, D.C.

WH military personnel reassigned after ‘incident' on Trump's Asia trip: report
[The Hill] Multiple military personnel have been removed from their positions in the White House after allegedly having improper contact with foreign women during President Trump’s recent trip to Asia, according to a new report.

The Washington Post reports that three staffers, who belonged to the White House Communications Agency (WHCA), are being investigated for allegedly breaking curfew during Trump’s stop in Vietnam.

"We are aware of the incident, and it is currently under investigation," Department of Defense spokesman Mark Wright told the Post.

The WHCA is made up of former military service personnel and provides the president and other top administration officials with communications support.

Liberal Millionaires Group Seeks to ‘Fundamentally Reset' America's Ideology and Economy
[Free Beacon] A group of deep-pocketed progressive millionaires seeks to "fundamentally reset" America's ideology and economy and "expose the dogma of free enterprise, limited government, and traditional family values," according to a brochure obtained by the Washington Free Beacon at a secretive progressive dark money donor conference.

The group, called Patriotic Millionaires, is a Washington, D.C.-based organization that consists of wealthy liberals with an income of at least $1 million. The organization initially formed in 2010 to "demand an end to Bush tax cuts for millionaires" and has launched a recent campaign against the Republican tax cut plan.

Patriotic Millionaires's newest organizational overview, which is not the same brochure that is currently available on its website, was obtained by the Free Beacon at the Democracy Alliance's fall investment conference held last week at the swanky La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. Each Democracy Alliance member vows to steer hundreds of thousands in funding to approved left-wing organizations the group supports.

Foreign Nationals Outnumber Americans in High-Paying, White-Collar Silicon Valley Jobs
[Breitbart] Silicon Valley Leadership Group President Carl Guardino touted the statistic in a report, revealing that 57 out of every 100 jobs in Silicon Valley that require at least a bachelor’s degree are taken by a foreign-born resident.

The revelation comes as President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, has led an initiative to increase educational funding of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields while ignoring the issue of mass immigration and multiple visa programs that have led to Americans being replaced by foreign nationals.

For instance, Ivanka helped secure $200 million of the Department of Education’s grant funds towards STEM fields, Breitbart News reported.

#2  Unfortunately a lot of really bright young people asspire to be lawyers in the US. Or they listen to the "follow your dream" advice and wind up with degrees you can't find a job in. And then are saddled with crushing debt. Its my opinion that as a society we should be promoting the trades as a career path more than we do. Maybe being a welder, or HVAC tech, or an electrician, or a tool and die maker, or a mold maker isn't as glamorous as being a fashion designer, or a web page creator, or a graphic artist but being able to pay your bills and eat has a certain satisfaction too.Not every kid coming out of HS can or should need to go to college in order to live a decent life. They may not have the apttitude for acedemics but are talented in other areas. Yes we need college graduates with usefull degrees in areas of study that benifit society. But graduates with degrees in African Story Telling, Womans Studies or any of the bullshit degrees dreamed up by acedemia in the last 40+ years. Not so much

#3  To be honest here.

These are mainly jobs that would be unfilled or mal-filled (and the company would move abroad or outsource dev entirely) if no migrants were allowed to work.

#5  No BP. Going back to the 80s such pubs as Computerworld would be filled with jobs listings. Those job listings would be composed of requirements that no one could fill to the letter. They were bogus paper fillings by HRs to justify hiring H1B people. There has never been a follow up by any government agency to see if the hired fit the job description. They've played this game for nearly 50 years depressing the natural supply demand process that would have resulted in far more American qualified personnel coming on line to fill positions. Like soft degrees without employment prospects, the Silicon Valley Robber Barons have reduced the legitimate prospects of those studying in the IT fields. Thus creating the shortage in the market today.

If they want to take their business and development elsewhere - GO. They'll find the corruption and political quicksand will eat up anything they think they are going to save.

#7  H1B destruction of well-paying engineering jobs in the 90's and 00's basically drove native-born US citizens out of that field. So fewer Americans have gone into it.

These are traditionally male dominated fields, and American males are being driven out of universities, as well as being gelded by feminist and socialist ideologues who run the colleges. So there are not only fewer, but any with leadership and executive acumen are going into other fields.

Almost Half of ‘Female' Transgender Inmates Are Sex Offenders
[Breitbart] Government plans to let people "self-identify" as the opposite sex will put female prisoners at risk, campaigners have warned, after it was revealed that a huge proportion of transgender inmates are sex offenders.

A report by feminist charity Fair Play for Women found "at least 41 per cent" of transgender inmates housed in jails across England and Wales are sex offenders ‐ compared to 17 per cent of the population as a whole ‐ and that a further handful are held in maximum-security category A prisons.

According to Ministry of Justice figures, there are 70 transgender inmates in English and Welsh jails, but officials refused to answer freedom of information requests on the number of sex offenders amongst them, alleging that there is no "business or legal case" for recording the data.

"Fair Play for Women strongly disagrees," said the group in a new report, which argues the information is necessary to assess risks to female prisoners posed by government plans to allow men to "change sex" without even having to see a doctor.

UC Berkeley professor's Slaughterbots update
[SFGATE] UC Berkeley professor Stuart Russell and the Future of Life Institute have created an eerie viral video titled "Slaughterbots" that depicts a future in which humans develop small, hand-sized drones that are programmed to identify and eliminate designated targets.

In the video above, the technology is initially developed with the intention of combating crime and terrorism, but the drones are taken over by an unknown forces who use the powerful weapons to murder a group of senators and college students. The video does contain some graphic content, and was originally uploaded to YouTube.

Russell, an expert on artificial intelligence, appears at the end of the video and warns against humanity's development of autonomous weapons.

Canada plans to help Islamic State fighters ‘let go of that terrorist ideology’
It’s Pretty Boy Trudeau — he can’t help it.
[IsraelTimes] PM Trudeau pledges to prosecute those returning button men who broke anti-terror laws, but also says his government will try to reintegrate them into society

Canada is concerned about the national security threat posed by citizens who joined the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group returning to this country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.

In parliament, Trudeau pledged to prosecute those who broke Canada’s anti-terrorism laws by joining the IS group, but also said his government would try to reintegrate them into society.

"We recognize the return of even one individual (who joined the IS group) may have serious national security implications," Trudeau said.

"We are going to monitor them. We are also there to help them to let go of that terrorist ideology," he added.

Nearly 180 Canadians are known to have traveled overseas to join the IS group. About 60 have returned to Canada, according to government figures released in 2016.

Only two returnees have been prosecuted under Canada’s anti-terrorism act, so far.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale last week explained the difficulties of gathering evidence in war zones for successful criminal prosecutions.

He rejected, however, the use of extrajudicial killings used by allies to solve the problem, telling public broadcaster CBC: "Canada does not engage in death squads."

Iraq to resume payments of Gulf War reparations to Kuwait
[Ynet] The United Nations

said on Tuesday it had accepted a proposal from Iraq to pay 0.5 percent of its 2018 oil proceeds towards compensation for $4.6 billion owed to Kuwait for destruction of its oil facilities during the 1990-91 Gulf War occupation.

Payments from the fund, which were suspended since October 2014 due to security and budgetary challenges faced by Iraq, will escalate annually until the end of 2021, the UN Compensation Commission (UNCC) said in a statement, adding that Kuwait had accepted the proposal.

"Based on oil price and export projections, this would result in payment in full of the outstanding claim award," it said, referring to the claim by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, the largest approved by the Geneva-based UNCC.

Group calls for Indonesian forces to stop virginity tests
[ARABNEWS] Indonesia’s military and police continue to perform abusive virginity tests on female recruits three years after the World Health Organization declared they had no scientific validity, an international human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
group said Wednesday.

Human Rights Watch said that senior Indonesian police and military officers have told it that security forces still impose the "cruel and discriminatory tests," which are carried out under the guise of psychological examinations for mental health and morality reasons.

"The Indonesian government’s continuing tolerance for abusive ’virginity tests’ by the security forces reflects an appalling lack of political will to protect the rights of Indonesian women," said Nisha Varia, women’s rights advocacy director at Human Rights Watch.

The group called for President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to order the national police chief and military commander to ban the practice.

The testing includes the invasive "two-finger test" to determine whether female applicants’ hymens are intact, which WHO in its 2014 clinical guidelines for health care of sexually abused women said lacks any scientific basis.

Human Rights Watch said it found that applicants who were deemed to have "failed" the test were not necessarily penalized but all of the women it spoke with described the test as painful, embarrassing, and traumatic.

The summit’s final statement held Hezbollah, which is a "partner in the Lebanese government, responsible for supporting terrorist groups in Arab countries with advanced weapons and ballistic missiles."

It called on the Iranian-backed group "to stop spreading extremism and sectarianism, to stop interfering in other countries’ domestic affairs and to quit supporting terrorism and forces of Evil in its regional surrounding."

Leb, which participated in the meeting via Antoine Azzam, its permanent representative at the league, due to Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil’s absence voiced reservations over the part on Hezbollah’s role.

Hariri returns to Lebanon after talks with Egyptian President in Cairo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Leb’s Saad al-Hariri, who resigned as prime minister on Nov. 4, returned to Beirut on Wednesday for the first time since he resigned from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Hariri’s sudden resignation thrust Leb to the forefront of regional tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, whose powerful Lebanese ally Hezbollah is part of the government.

Hariri was greeted by members of the security forces as he disembarked from a jet at Beirut airport, live footage of his arrival showed.

Hariri cited fear of liquidation and meddling by Iran and Hezbollah in the Arab world in his resignation speech.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
has refused to accept the resignation until Hariri returns to present it in person.

Earlier, Hariri met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi in Cairo, for talks in a brief Cairo stopover before a planned return to Leb, Egypt state media said on Tuesday.

The politics of siege
[DAWN] THE democratic right to protest has been hijacked and the federal capital and the country’s fourth most populous city, Rawalpindi, have virtually been held hostage. It ought to have been an unacceptable state of affairs. But a misguided protest by far-right religious parties, led by the freshly minted Tehrik Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah, and a mishandled response by the federal government have snowballed into a full-fledged political and law-and-order crisis. Leave aside for a moment the reason for the protest and the demands of the protesters who have made life miserable for hundreds of thousands of commuters between Rawalpindi and Islamabad for over two weeks now. If it were any other group of citizens ‐ nurses, teachers, babus government employees or farmers ‐ would their protest have been allowed to disrupt the lives of the denizens without any end in sight? Why, then, is this impunity afforded to a gathering that has threatened violence, made extreme demands and undermined the democratic order in the country?

To be sure, the democratic right to protest must be protected against undesirable and illegal encroachment by the state. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
the core of the TLY’s complaint has already been addressed by parliament and demands such as the sacking of federal ministers cannot be countenanced; it would set a terrible precedent and encourage future protests. Just as clearly, the protesters must not be evicted in a violent manner. The clumsiness of the state security apparatus could trigger violence that may spiral out of control. A negotiated settlement, with all institutions of the state firmly lined up to bring a peaceful end to the protest at the earliest, is the only sensible path out of the crisis. The failure to do so until now is a reflection of the lack of coordination and communication among state institutions. A firm, united message from all major institutions has not been in evidence so far.

The problem, however, clearly goes beyond the latest siege of Islamabad. Whether it was the PPP and PML-N’s ’long march’ politics or the PTI’s several attempts to paralyse life in the capital, the democratic right to protest has morphed into dangerous demonstrations of street power. There is a line between legitimate democratic protests and protests that destabilise democracy or are anti-democratic ‐ and it appears that line has been crossed in Pakistain. Quite how new rules can be negotiated among the political class is unclear, but it is apparent that this new phase of politics of sieges is unsustainable. Making parliament the locus of political activity could be one way of pulling back from the brink. Another possibility is that the mainstream parties determine new rules for protests in Islamabad that allow protesters to make their point without massively disrupting daily life. If the danger of escalation is not addressed, some kind of dreadful violence may materialise sooner than later.

US, Afghan forces strike at opium factories to curb Taliban funds
[DAWN] US and Afghan forces have launched joint attacks on Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
opium factories to try to curb the bully boy group’s economic lifeline, officials from both countries said on Monday.
The Mexican border irony must be absolutely blinding.
US Army General John Nicholson showed videos at a presser of targeted aerial strikes against what he described as Taliban drug factories.

"Last night we conducted strikes in northern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
to hit the Taliban where it hurts, in their narcotics financing," said Nicholson, flanked by Afghan Army Lieutenant General Mohammad Sharif Yaftali.

The southern province of Helmand suffers heavy fighting and is the single-largest producer of opium.

Opium production in Afghanistan reached record highs this year, up 87 per cent on last year, the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
said last week.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said output of opium made from poppy seeds in Afghanistan, the world’s main source of heroin, stands at around 9,000 metric tons this year.

UNODC has warned in the past that Kabul’s weakening grip on security was contributing to a collapse in eradication efforts.

Nearly half of Afghan opium is processed, or refined into morphine or heroin, before it is trafficked out of the country, according to US and Afghan officials.

Accountability court declares Ishaq Dar an absconder
[DAWN] Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was declared an absconder by an accountability court in Islamabad on Tuesday in a corruption reference filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

During an accountability hearing pertaining to Dar, who is accused of amassing assets of an approximate value of Rs831.7 million — disproportionate to his known sources of income ─ NAB's investigating officer Nadir Abbass told the court that a NAB team had visited the minister's residence in Lahore and Islamabad after non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against him.

However, Abbass said, Dar was not found at either one of his residential addresses. For some time now, the minister has been in London where he is undergoing medical treatment.

Iran's president calls Arab League 'worn-out' body
[DAWN] Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has criticised the Arab League for supporting Saudi Arabia and its role in the war in Yemen.

Rouhani on Tuesday said it's unfortunate the organisation expressed regret that the Yemeni rebels known as Houthis launched a ballistic missile into Saudi Arabia earlier this month in response to “so much bombing” by the Saudi-led coalition.

He also called the regional organisation of Arab countries “old, worn-out, exhausted and ineffective.” State TV broadcast the remarks.

Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Cairo on Sunday accused Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of destabilising the region.

Peshawar High Court orders security for girl forced to parade naked in DI Khan
[DAWN] The Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court on Tuesday ordered the provision of security for a 16-year-old girl who was forcibly paraded naked in her village in Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
last month.

The order was issued by a bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Afsar Shah, which has taken up a petition filed by the 16-year-old girl's mother a day earlier.

The petition narrated the events of Oct 27, when the suspects in the case allegedly tore off the girl's clothes and took her dupatta away. The petition states that the girl was later paraded on the streets of the village while a video of the incident was recorded.

The petition seeks protection from the culprits, the inclusion of the name of the man who filmed the video in the first information report (FIR) of the case, as well as the recovery of the video.

It has also sought the court’s orders for the inspector general (IG) of police and the deputy IG of DI Khan to submit weekly reports on the progress of their investigation into the incident and ensure the dispensation of justice to the victim.

The petition further states that local police has supported the suspects by twisting facts in the FIR.

4 al-Qaeda Baddies die in drone strike in Yemen
ADEN: A drone strike killed four suspected Al-Qaeda fighters in central Yemen on Monday, a local official said.

The United States is the only force known to operate armed drones over Yemen.

“A car carrying four fighters was hit as it drove on a mountain road” in Bayda province, the official said. “All of them were killed.”
“The fighters were from Al-Qaeda,” he said.

Washington considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to be the radical group’s most dangerous branch.

AQAP has flourished in the chaos of the country’s civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi against the Houthi Shiite rebels.

A long-running drone war against AQAP has intensified since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

An air raid he ordered that month killed a US Navy SEAL and several Yemeni civilians in Bayda.

US strikes in Yemen have typically targeted suspected Al-Qaeda fighters, but last month the United States said it had killed dozens of fighters from its jihadist rival, the Daesh group, at training camps in Bayda.

Nigeria police say at least 50 killed in mosque bombing
[IsraelTimes] While there is no immediate claim of responsibility, authorities suspect the Boko Haram terror group

A teenage jacket wallah detonated as worshippers gathered for morning prayers at a mosque in northeastern Nigeria, killing at least 50 people, police said Tuesday, in one of the region’s deadliest attacks in years.

Police front man Othman Abubakar told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named they were "still trying to ascertain the number of injured because they are in various hospitals."

While there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing in Mubi town in Adamawa state, suspicion immediately fell on the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
krazed killer group. The group is based in neighboring Borno state and has been blamed for scores of similar attacks over the years.

Boko Haram increasingly has been using teenagers or young women as bombers, many of whom have been kidnapped.

The police front man said the young man detonated his explosives while mingling among the worshipers.

While Nigeria’s military in recent months has flushed Boko Haram from its forest stronghold, President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim late last year that the krazed killer group had been "crushed" has proven to be premature.

Boko Haram has been blamed for more than 20,000 deaths during its nearly decade-old insurgency, which has spilled over into neighboring countries and displaced millions of people, creating a vast humanitarian crisis.
Dawn adds:
The blast happened during early morning prayers at the Madina mosque in the Unguwar Shuwa area of Mubi, some 200 kilometres (125 miles) by road from the Adamawa state capital, Yola.

#5  Thankfully one priest does not speak for the entire Church. Not even the Pope unless its Ex Cathedra.

There are only 7 Ex Cathedra Papl documents in the entirety of the Catholic church, the last being in 1950 (Pope Pius XII) declaring the Assumption of Mary, and the one prior to that in 1854 (Pope Pius IX) defining the Immaculate Conception.

So although they can do it, few actually do. Not even Saint John Paul II the Great did, much less the current Jesuit jackanape Francis I.

Six Syrians arrested for ‘planning terror attack’ in Germany
[IsraelTimes] Police raid homes in Kassel, Essen, Hanover, Leipzig, arrest suspected Islamic State members allegedly plotting assault on public target.

German police on Tuesday tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
six Syrian refugees suspected of preparing a terror attack in the name of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group, prosecutors said.

The suspects, aged 20 to 28, were detained in dawn raids that saw some 500 coppers swoop on residences in the cities of Kassel, Essen, Hanover and Leipzig.

The men are accused of belonging to "the foreign terrorist group that calls itself the Islamic State," Christian Hartwig, a front man for the Frankfurt prosecutor’s office, said in a statement.

"The accused are also suspected of preparing an attack on a public target in Germany using weapons or explosives," Hartwig said.

The Sherlocks believe the men had not yet finalized their attack plan, he added.

The suspects arrived in Germany between December 2014 and September 2015 at the height of Europe’s migrant crisis.

Prosecutors declined to give further details about the case, saying the inquiry was still ongoing.

German security forces have been on high alert to the threat of Islamist attacks, particularly after a truck rampage claimed by IS killed 12 people in Berlin last December.

Domestic security officials estimate there are some 10,000 radical Islamists in Germany, with roughly 1,600 among them suspected of being capable of violence.
The Local - Germany adds:
German daily Die Welt said it was fellow refugees who tipped off the police about the suspects.
This has been the case in a number of recent arrests.
Domestic security services estimate there are some 10,300 radical Islamists in Germany.

About 700 of them are considered dangerous and capable of a violent attack.
And a small detail from Ynet:
Four of the suspects arrived in Germany in December 2014 and two arrived the following year. All six had applied for asylum. The prosecutor's office did not say if their asylum applications had been approved.

2 more US airstrikes hit ISIS targets in Libya
By Libya Herald reporter.

Tunis, 21 November 2017:

The US Africa Command (Africom) has carried out two more air strikes on Islamic State (IS) militants. According to a statement today, they took place last week, on 17 and 19 November. Both strike occurred near the desert town of Fugaha, some 230 kilometres north-east of Sebha.

Although the main American air campaign against the IS ended with the liberation of Sirte last year, Africom has continued occasional strikes, the most recent being two in late September.

“We are committed to maintaining pressure on the terror network and preventing them from establishing safe haven, an Africom statement read. It added that the US would not give up on destroying terrorist organisations in the region and that is goal was a reconstituted Libyan state “at peace internally and able to address all threats within its territory”.

The court had last week accepted the ousted premier's application for exemption from court hearings till November 27. However, Sharif has appeared before the court today due to a change in his plans.

3 suspected militants, Indian commando killed during gun fights in held Kashmir
[DAWN] At least three suspected hard boyz and an army commando were killed on Tuesday in two separate festivities in the India-held Kashmire following a surge in fighting between government forces and separatists, police said.

Fighting erupted in the northwestern area of Handwara after Indian troops launched a counter-insurgency operation and killed three hard boyz there, said Muneer Ahmed Khan, a police brass hat.

In another operation in the neighbouring Kupwara area, a special forces soldier was killed in a continuing gunbattle, police said.

Khan said the government forces were battling a few hard boyz trapped in the area.

There was no independent confirmation of the two festivities, the latest in a string of deadly shootouts between Indian forces and hard boyz in the restive Kashmire. At least eight separatists, an Indian air force commando and a policeman have been killed in the last two days.

Moreover, at least 190 rebels and 70 government soldiers have been killed in fighting this year.

Iraq
Suicide car bomb rocks disputed town north of Baghdad
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A suicide boom-mobileer has killed at least 32 people in an attack on a busy market in a town north of Baghdad on Tuesday, a security official said.

Dozens more were maimed when the attacker blew up the vehicle in the middle of the fruit and vegetable market in Tuz Khurmatu, the official said.

A doctor at the town’s general hospital put the number of maimed at 80, some of them lightly injured.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Suicide attacks in Iraq are usually claimed by ISIS , which has suffered a string of military defeats and last week lost control of the last town the turbans held in the country.

Tuz Khurmatu is home to a mixed Kurdish, Arab and Turkmen population. It was the scene of deadly violence in mid-October when Iraqi forces retook it from Kurdish control in response to a Kurdish independence referendum.

Turkmen MP Niazi Maamar Oglu said an attack of Tuesday’s magnitude had not been seen in the town ’for years’.

A security chief in Salaheddin province, Mehdi Taqi, told AFP that a curfew was imposed immediately after the bombing.

’There are still some areas west of Tuz Khurmatu that serve as hideouts for ISIS and we will soon be carrying out operations to clean them up,’ Taqi added.

9 ISIS Turbans die in attack in Mosul
Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have thwarted an attack by Islamic State militants against southeast of Mosul, a military official said.

“Four armed groups of IS attacked on Tuesday evening an armed attack against Hushter and al-Khattab regions in Qarraj town in southeast of Mosul,” Brig. Gen. Wael al-Bahadli, of the army’s third brigade, told Anadolu Agency.

The militants, according to Bahadli, “clashed with deployed troops for 40 minutes, before the Iraqi forces managed to defeat them.”

“The army killed nine militants and destroyed an armored vehicle and three others laden with weapons,” he added.

“The militant group’s target was to control the road linking between Makhmur region, southeast of Mosul with Kirkuk desert, in order to move freely in this region,” Bahadli said.

Iraqi army troops, according to him “started a wide-scale security campaign at Hushter and Khattab to comb them of any infiltrators.”

ideology and supporting ISIS, has been sentenced to 23 years in jail.
No more ping pong by the pool as part of the normalization therapy the Saudis used to boast of? Poor timing on the part of the former military man.
He was also convicted of sympathizing with and praising al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now beyond all cares and woe...
, attempting to overthrow the regime and incitement against the governors of the Kingdom and the rest of the Gulf Arab states.

He faces charges of traveling to conflict areas in Syria to participate in the fighting and joining one of the holy warrior groups there.

The man was also found guilty of financing terrorism. He put the picture of Bin Laden as a profile photo of him on Twitter and stored material backing terrorist organizations on his computer.

He was prevented by the Specialized Criminal Court in Riyadh from traveling outside the country for 23 years beginning from the date of his release from prison.

A judge permanently blocked Trump's 'sanctuary cities' executive order
[Circa] A federal judge on Monday permanently blocked President Trump’s executive order to cut funding from so called "sanctuary cities."

Trump’s order would have removed some federal funds from cities that limit their cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities.

U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick
Oh, him again.
rejected the Trump administration’s argument that the measure only applies to a relatively small pool of money.

Orrick also said that Trump cannot set fresh conditions on spending that Congress has previously approved.

#7  9th Circus first. Then the Supremes.

We are talking about CRIMINAL illegal aliens. That's who the feds want. And that's who this asshole is preventing punishment of - people that knowingly harbor and protect wanted federal criminals.

Congress can fix this. Pass a law explicitly revoking any form of immunity for local governments AND individual actors (officials, police officers, etc) in the case of failure to enforce federal immigration laws against criminal illegal aliens. And add a crime of deliberate failure (i.e. refusing to execute the law or interfereing with the law enforcement efforts) to enforce that allows a civil suit to be brought in federal court against not only the organizations but against the individuals.

Then sit back and watch "sanctuary" for criminal illegal aliens suddenly disappear when Councilwoman Libtard and Councilman ChamberofCommerceTool get sued and lose their homes and savings.

And before you go all 11th amendment, look at this case, its long-established precedent.

Woman freed from Taliban captivity in Pakistan details brutality
[DAWN] A US mother held hostage by Taliban
...Arabic for students...
-linked holy warriors for five years has detailed the violence and sexual assault she said she endured in captivity, and regretted that her young son was also beaten.

"This was an intolerable situation for a child to be in," Caitlan Coleman Boyle, 31, told ABC News in a television interview broadcast on Monday.

Coleman Boyle gave birth to three children in captivity. She and her Canadian husband were kidnapped by the Haqqani network while travelling through a remote area of Afghanistan ‐ for reasons that remain unclear ‐ in 2012.

The family were released last month in Pakistain and are now trying to rebuild their lives in Canada.

She said their guards "could be very violent, even sometimes with the children," assaulting their now four-year-old son with a stick, and hitting her and her husband.

"I would get beaten or hit or thrown on the ground," she told ABC News. She broke a cheekbone and three fingers while intervening to protect the children, her husband, Joshua Boyle, 34, told ABC.

They made toys out of bottle caps and bits of cardboard, and fearing the family could be beheaded, they made up a game based on England’s Charles I, who was executed in 1649, and Oliver Cromwell, she said.

"Obviously with people like this, the idea of a beheading is always on the table, so he certainly knew that this type of thing could happen to his family but then we would come up with games to make it not seem so scary," she said.

"He had great fun pretending to be Oliver Cromwell and chasing Charles I around and trying to behead him," she said. "We made it a game so that he wasn’t afraid."

The flames of bigotry
[DAWN] IT all started with just few hundred zealots blocking Islamabad’s main highway. Now into its third week and with thousands more joining in, the blockade has virtually brought the administration to its knees. Pampering and pleading have failed to move the defiant holy mans; even the court order to end the siege has fallen on deaf ears. The paralysis of the state has given the fanatics a greater sense of empowerment.

What is more troubling is that the flames of bigotry are sweeping across other parts of the country creating a dangerous confluence of religion and politics. The controversy over the missing oath that has apparently been exploited by the newly formed Tehrik Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLY) to whip up religious sentiments has turned into more of a political issue bringing the beleaguered government under severe pressure.

It is the fear of a blowback that seems to have limited the option of using force. The repeated extension of deadlines and seeking the help of religious leaders to end the stand-off demonstrate the helplessness of the administration in a midst of a political crisis. The political fallout of the 2007 Lal Masjid

Row continues over education ministry schoolbook endorsing suicide bombing
[Libya Herald] The row over a schoolbook on Islamic culture which approves suicide kabooms against those seen as enemies of Islam has taken a fresh turn with the head of the education ministry’s curriculum department denying responsibility for it.

The book, which has being circulated to school students, was issued by the ministry under the authority of the Presidency Council’s Government of National Accord. The controversial text says that jacket wallahs go to paradise while all other suicides ‐ those who are trying to escape their problems in life ‐ are doomed to hell.

The inclusion of the text has drawn massive criticism of the ministry on social media for spreading false doctrine and potentially radicalising young people.

Denying responsibility for it, the head of the curriculum centre, Taher al-Habib, is reported saying that it was first introduced into the book in 2005 but then dropped in 2007. It was then reintroduced by the pro-Islamist "National Salvation Government" of Khalifa Ghwell in 2015. As such, he suggests, his department was not responsible for coming up with it.

He has, however, agreed that in future, the text will be deleted.

Trump asks Supreme Court for full enforcement of travel ban
[DAWN] The Trump administration on Monday asked the United States Supreme Court to allow its latest travel ban to take full effect.

A federal appeals court ruling last week had allowed President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's newest version of the ban to take effect partially.

That ruling by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the administration to ban people from six mostly Moslem countries unless they have a "bona fide" relationship with someone in the US.

Last month, a federal judge in Hawaii had blocked most of Trump's third travel ban just before it was due to take effect.

A judge in Maryland separately blocked it to a lesser degree, saying Trump could bar people from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
as long as they did not have "bona fide" relationships with people or organizations already in the US.

The travel ban also applies to travellers from North Korea and to some Venezuelan government officials and their families, but the lawsuits did not challenge those restrictions.

St. Cloud: CAIR ham-handed program backfires
[RefugeeResettlementWatch] We told you on Saturday that in order to hammer home the idea that Muslims are victims in the age of Trump, CAIR Minnesota held a public meeting at the St. Cloud library where they presented a panel of Japanese Americans and asked‐could this happen here?

Of course the ’this’ is the incarceration of tens of thousands of Muslims as the Roosevelt Administration did to the Japanese in WWII.

Their propaganda stunt backfired on CAIR when their leader in Minnesota, Jaylani Hussein, refused to answer a straightforward question about CAIR, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

He went one step further in demonstrating that instead of being helpless victims, they are actually the bullies when he said CAIR carried a big stick‐a statement that put no one at ease.

Here is Hohmann at World Net Daily:

The Minnesota leader of the Council on American-Islamic Relations was asked during a community meeting Saturday if he would renounce the terrorist organization Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

He refused.

The event at the St. Cloud Public Library was part of CAIR’s ongoing "anti-Islamophobia" campaign that it launched in the wake of the election one year ago of President Donald Trump.

About 30 people attended the event Saturday, and they were told Muslims are on the verge of being rounded up and placed in internment camps, just like the Japanese were in 1942 under an executive order signed by President Franklin Roosevelt.

[....]

Jaylani Hussein then presented the Somali refugee community in Minnesota as victims of the latest American racism, taking the form of anti-Muslim bigotry equal to that leveled against the Chinese and Japanese leading up to World War II.

One of the presenters suggested it might take only one trigger moment and the same could happen to Muslims. However....

Local resident Elizabeth Baklaich reminded the professor that America "already had that trigger moment."

"That trigger moment was 9/11. There were 3,000 people who died," she said. "... [T]hat was a direct attack that was followed up by war, and if we were going to make this same maneuver against Muslims, it would have happened. ... I just wanted to bring that up because I think that’s a fundamental flaw in your thesis," Baklaich said.

To Hussein, she directed another question.

"I heard you talk about fear Jaylani, and there’s one thing you could do very easily that would help alleviate a tremendous amount of fear in this community," Baklaich said.

She reminded him of the FBI evidence presented in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing trial of 2007 that showed CAIR is a front group for Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

"If you want to be our friend, and you want to be part of the community, and want us to accept you more, and work with you and be less fearful of what’s coming in, and what’s going on, are you willing to condemn both Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood?" she asked.

Not only did he not condemn Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, in a rambling and increasingly defensive answer he said that CAIR carried a big stick!

So much for ratcheting down the fear level!

600 African migrants rescued near Spain
18 November
[AlAhram] Around 600 African migrants were rescued off the coast of Spain in 24 hours, a sea rescue patrol said Saturday. The Guardia Civil and Salvamento Maritimo rescue service added that operations to recover further migrants were still under way.

Spain is the third busiest gateway for migrants arriving in Europe, but far behind Italy and Greece. However, the number of people arriving by sea in Spain has nearly tripled over the last year to 17,687. Many Africans undertaking the long route to Europe are choosing to avoid crossing danger-ridden Libya to get to Italy along the so-called central Mediterranean route, and choosing instead to get there via Morocco and Spain.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) close to 160,000 people have made the dangerous crossing to Europe this year and almost 3,000 more died or went missing while trying.

Afghan migrant boy, 11, commits suicide in Austria
18 November
[TheLocal,at] Austrian police said on Friday that they were investigating the suicide of an 11-year-old Afghan migrant. He died in a hospital near Vienna on Monday after being admitted a day earlier, police said. It was unclear how he killed himself.

The boy and his family had been living in a refugee centre in Baden, south of the capital, since last year, when a record influx of migrants arrived in Austria. Media reports said the boy felt unable to cope with looking after his six siblings after his 23-year-old elder brother left him in charge.

Germany bans Syrian who flew to Greece with ankle monitor
17 November
[DW] A refugee who was fitted with an electronic ankle tag monitor following violent behavior has been barred from Germany after leaving the country. Police had dropped an investigation into whether the man posed a threat.

Police said 35-year-old Hussein Z., a refugee from Syria, boarded a flight to Athens from Hamburg on October 11, a few days after telling police that he wanted to get his sick son from a hospital on the Turkey-Syria border. According to Der Spiegel, he also contacted Hamburg police after his arrival in Turkey.

According to a statement by Bavarian police, the man had come to their attention during his stay in the town of Aschaffenburg because of "aggressive behavior and attacks" on others in the shelter where he was living, as well as after making "various threats."

Germany's federal prosecutor opened an investigation into Hussein in June after witnesses testified that he had had contact with rebels in Syria and was seen fighting in a video uncovered by the Bavarian police.

Temporary obstacles have already been placed in some locations in the Catalan capital following the August attack, and they will now be replaced with permanent versions. Placing further pieces of “"urban furniture" at some vulnerable spots as additional obstacles to vehicles is also being considered.

Teenage Nigerian girls drowned at sea, Italian autopsies find
16 November
[TheLocal.it] Post-mortem examinations on the bodies of 26 teenage migrant girls found dead in the Mediterranean in early November confirmed they almost all drowned at sea, Italian news agencies reported on Wednesday. The loss of the girls – believed to be Nigerians aged 14 to 18 – has been described by the Nigerian foreign ministry as "a monumental loss and a sad moment for our country".

The autopsies found no recent trace of physical or sexual violence. The bodies of the victims were found floating in the water by a Spanish military ship and brought to Italy on November 3rd after two separate rescue operations.

According to the UN, 80 percent of young Nigerian women arriving in Italy are already in the clutches of prostitution networks, or quickly fall under their control.

Italy defends 'inhumane' policy of blocking migrants in Libya

[TheLocal.it] Italy has defended its policy on blocking migrants in Libya, saying the deal, denounced as "inhumane" by the UN, was essential to stop boat departures towards Europe.

"The alternative cannot be to resign ourselves to the impossibility of managing migratory flows and hand human traffickers the keys to European democracies," Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti said on Wednesday.

Aarhus man gets prison sentence for making bomb in basement
16 November
[TheLocal.dk] A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison by Denmark’s High Court for making and possessing a bomb. Somalian citizen Libaan Ahmed Warsame has also been sentenced with conditional deportation from Denmark.

He was found guilt of making and storing a bomb in the basement of an apartment building on the Peter Fabers Vej residential street in Aarhus. Global Terrorism Index: Death toll drops globally but rises in Europe
15 November
[DW] Even as terrorism-related deaths drop dramatically in some parts of the world, fatalities in OECD countries have reached a 16-year high. Research Director of the Global Terrorism Index Daniel Hyslop tells DW why.
  • The study by the Institute for Economics and Peace shows terrorism fell significantly in the worst-affected countries — Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria — bringing down global casualty figures.

  • The report went on to call 2016 a "turning point" in the fight against radical Islamist extremism.

  • The "Islamic State" (IS) was the "main driver" for a rise in deaths in Europe and other developed countries. The group was linked to 75 percent of deaths from terrorism in OECD nations since 2014.

  • The rise in European deaths coincides with a tactical shift towards simpler and cheaper methods of attack.

Refugee center fire in German city of Bamberg kills one

Norway’s government loses vote over 'October children' asylum reassessments
