WSJ - The Flynn Fiasco. A sentencing hearing devolves into a spectacle of misinformation.
[WSJ] Well, that was bizarre. We’re referring to the fiasco Tuesday of what was supposed to be the sentencing of Michael Flynn. The sentencing was postponed until next year, but not before federal Judge Emmet Sullivan damaged his own reputation with an extraordinary public attack on the former national security adviser for a crime he’s not been charged with or admitted to.

Mr. Flynn pleaded guilty a year ago to a single count of lying to the FBI. Yet after being assured that the former three-star general is sticking with his plea, Judge Sullivan unloaded on the defendant over his supposed violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA.

"All along, you were an unregistered agent of a foreign country while serving as the National Security Adviser to the President of the United States. That undermines everything this flag over here stands for. Arguably you sold your country out," said the judge. He also used the words "treason" and "treasonous."

A Look Inside The Taliban's Safe Havens in Pakistan
[Daily Caller] There is an extensive Taliban infrastructure and support network in Pakistan along its border with Afghanistan, which includes education, recruiting, training, financing and command and control centers.

In these areas, the Taliban often operate freely alongside the Pakistani military and with the support of Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence agency, the ISI.

The following information was supplied by on-the-ground sources but represents only a relatively small portion of the assistance being provided to the Taliban by Pakistan.

Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan borders Afghanistan for hundreds of miles, much of it dotted with Taliban safe havens and staging areas for attacks in Afghanistan.

Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, is the home of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura, a command and control center for operations primarily in southeastern Afghanistan. The Taliban are concentrated in the Pashtun Abad and Gulistan Town sections of Quetta, through which the Pakistani military restricts civilian movement, but provides Taliban access to Cantonment, a Pakistani Army base adjacent to Pashtun Abad and Gulistan.

Wounded Taliban are known to be treated in Quetta’s medical clinics, some fighters reportedly receiving payments from the Pakistani government.

On the main highway connecting Quetta to Afghanistan, Taliban are often seen riding motorcycles or in four-by-four trucks carrying their AK-47 rifles. In Kuchlak, just north of Quetta, there are SUVs without license plates belonging to ISI officers, who monitor and protect Taliban movements.

British Government to Activate Full ‘No-Deal' Brexit Preparations
PM Teresa May's lack of leadership brings the UK to this.
[Gcaptain] The British government said on Tuesday it would implement plans for a no-deal Brexit in full and begin telling businesses and citizens to prepare for the risk of leaving the European Union without an agreement.

Those plans include setting aside space on ferries to ensure a regular flow of medical supplies and keeping 3,500 armed forces personnel ready to support the government with its contingency plans.

Catholic Bishops Told to Take Responsibility for Sex-Abuse Crisis or Risk Church Losing Credibility
[National Review] A committee of Catholic Church leaders and sexual-abuse experts has chastised Catholic bishops worldwide to take responsibility for the Church’s sex-abuse crisis and to speak personally to victims in their areas ‐ or risk losing the Church’s credibility.

"Absent a comprehensive and communal response, not only will we fail to bring healing to victim survivors, but the very credibility of the Church to carry on the mission of Christ will be in jeopardy throughout the world," wrote the steering committee of the Vatican’s upcoming February conference on the Church’s sex-abuse epidemic, in a letter to attendees.

The committee is comprised of cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago, cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai, archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta, the Vatican’s top sex-abuse investigator, and father Hans Zollner, an abuse expert in Rome.

"But each of us needs to own this challenge, coming together in solidarity, humility, and penitence to repair the damage done, sharing a common commitment to transparency, and holding everyone in the Church accountable," they wrote.

"The first step must be acknowledging the truth of what has happened," the committee warned the bishops and other Church leaders.

Pope Francis has called an unusual conference of Church leaders at the Vatican from February 21 to 24 that will address the abuse crisis. The conference will request the presence of the leaders of 110 national Catholic bishops’ conferences as well as many abuse experts and heads of religious orders.

Fox News' Shep Smith Offers Full-Throated Defense of Hillary Clinton
[Political Insider] Fox News anchor Shepard Smith scoffed at comparisons between the FBI’s treatment of Hillary Clinton with their treatment of former Trump National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn.

And he did so by disparaging the reporting of one of the network’s most respected investigative journalists, Catherine Herridge.

Recent reports have suggested Flynn was coerced into forgoing a lawyer during his interview with the FBI, while agents sought to make him relaxed during the process in the hopes of getting him to lie. Flynn was unaware that he was under official review, did not have counsel present, and thought he was just shooting the breeze with fellow lawmen. The interview eventually led to a guilty plea on one count of making false statements.

The revelations have led to comparisons of Clinton’s interview, in which the FBI allowed her to have multiple lawyers and aides present to help defend herself and was conducted in a manner that former Director James Comey described as "unusual."

Herridge noted in a segment with Shep that critics have made the comparisons between the two interviews and the host responded by acting like a child, rolling his eyes, interrupting Herridge’s report, and generally speaking like an ignorant, hardcore fan of the former First Lady.

It was, in a word, embarrassing. Watch:

Victor Davis Hanson: The Elites Haven't Faced Consequences; Brennan, Comey, Clapper, Rice All Lied
[Real Clear Politics] Historian Victor Davis Hanson said there has been no consequences for the wrongdoing by elites in society and warned that republics and successful states fall apart when the elites fall out of touch with the people.

"We have a whole bunch... here at home, that feel they can dictate to people and they're never subject to the ramifications of their own ideology and policy," he said of elites. "And it's like the emperor has no clothes and then they're surprised that Trump won or surprised that people are rioting in Paris. What did they think was going to happen?"

"We know historically, Tucker, when you have successful systems like ours or the Greek city-state of the fourth century or Rome in the fifth century A.D. or the Byzantines in the fifthteenth century or the ancient regime in Rome. Why do they fall apart? They fall apart because an elite no longer warrants the respect they think that they deserve because they are out of touch with the people," Hanson explained on Tuesday's Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Hanson said there is an "inequality" in the law where the elites, an "array of people who have not told the truth," haven't faced criminal charges. He rattled off names like former FBI director James Comey, former DNI James Clapper, former CIA director John Brennan, former FBI agent Andrew McCabe, and others.

Union Organizers Honored by State Communist Party
[Free Beacon] The Connecticut Communist Party honored a pair of union organizers, including an official who nearly captured the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, at its annual awards ceremony.

The party presented the People's World Amistad Awards to Eva Bermúdez Zimmerman in recognition of her upstart challenge against establishment Democrat, as well as longtime union official Shellye Davis. The party described the honorees as "fierce warriors in the forefront demanding workers' and immigrant rights, social justice, peace and equality for a better and sustainable world" in an announcement. The award ceremony was held at a Methodist Church in New Haven on Dec. 8 to mark the 99th anniversary of the Communist Party USA.

Bermúdez Zimmerman made headlines in 2018 when she launched a long shot campaign to challenge Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ned Lamont's lieutenant governor, former Connecticut secretary of state Susan Bysiewicz. Bermúdez Zimmerman, who is married to Connecticut SEIU state council associate director Stacey Zimmerman, took a leave of absence from her work as organizing director of the SEIU Local 2001 for the campaign. Her insurgent run garnered intense media interest as the state's first Puerto Rican candidate for lieutenant governor and was hailed as a "fresh face" in Connecticut's political scene. Despite being out fundraised by Bysiewicz, Zimmerman managed to capture 37 percent of votes in the the August Democratic primary. Lamont and Bysiewicz narrowly won the November election.

The state party also recognized the efforts of Shellye Davis, president of the AFL-CIO affiliated Greater Hartford Central Labor Coalition and a longtime official with the American Federation of Teachers, was also honored for her long history of labor activism. The announcement hailed her work as "leader for the rights of public sector union members and the people they serve, especially the youth."

POTUS plans to review case of Matt Golsteyn, military officer charged with murder
[Wash Times] President Trump declared Sunday that "at the request of many," he plans to review the murder charges against Maj. Matt Golsteyn.

"He could face the death penalty from our own government after he admitted to killing a Terrorist bomb maker while overseas," Mr. Trump tweeted, calling the soldier a "U.S. Military hero."

On Friday, Army Lt. Col. Loren Bymer announced that the officer would be charged after killing an alleged Afghan bomb-maker.

Maj. Golsteyn admitted in a 2011 job interview with the CIA that he shot and killed the man, who be believed was responsible for killing two Marines in an explosion.

The Army Criminal Investigative Division never found any evidence or corroborating witnesses but based their conclusions off of his admission to the CIA.

Had a relation, along with four buddies, accused of causing a replacement to commit suicide. Only when the last of five courts martial was in process did it come out that the prosecution was withholding the fact that the kid got to theater with a suicide watch note in his file. But the Army was going to show they Took This Seriously.

#11  A Texas Ranger took it upon himself to ride across the US/Mexican border and apprehend a Mexican who had earlier cross over to the US side and shot a US citizen as he was coming out of the front door of a church.

The Ranger was reprimanded for causing an "international incident" and I believe he was fired. Fortunately the Mexican was not only not returned but was tried and hung. The ranger went on to become a Sheriff.

The Ranger viewed his authoritative pawers differently than his high command but was an excellent and fearless lawman.

Black Panther Cop killer denied parole ninth time
[Guardian] Jalil Muntaqim, a former Black Panther who has been in prison for 47 years, has been told he must spend at least another 15 months behind bars having been denied release for the ninth time by a New York state parole board.

The three-member parole panel voted this week by two-to-one to keep Muntaqim, aka Anthony Bottom, incarcerated in the maximum security Sullivan correctional facility in upstate New York. His release had been vociferously opposed by the New York city police unions and by the widow of one of the two police officers he was convicted of murdering in 1971.

Muntaqim’s ninth denial since he became eligible for parole in 1998 was in stark contrast to the release in April of his fellow Black Liberation Army member and accomplice, Herman Bell. At his parole hearing, Bell had expressed revulsion for the 1971 killings, saying: "There was nothing political about the act, as much as I thought at the time. It was murder and horribly wrong."

The Guardian in July profiled Muntaqim’s battle to get out of prison almost half a century after he was arrested for the murders of the two police officers, Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones, in a shooting in Harlem. The officers had been drawn to the spot for what they thought was a domestic dispute but were then ambushed.

Convicted - Nut Job Who Climbed The Statue Of Liberty To Protest Trump Eyes A Long Prison Sentence
[Red State] Some people are nuts. And some nuts prove that they’re nuts, while thinking they’re in actuality changing the world. That’s how we know they’re nuts: They’re completely clueless to the fact that what they’re doing comes across as insane. It’s like that (paraphrased) line from Casa Mi Padre:

"If you were smart, you’d know how stupid you are."

As you may remember, on the 4th of July, a huge nut climbed the Statue of Liberty. In her mind, she was really doing something cool: She was teaching the world that President Trump shouldn’t keep "children in cages." This was, ideologically, vastly ignorant. The country had first responded with horror to photos of kids in cages which were actually staged (here and here). Furthermore, the practice of family separation was the edict of interpreted law, per the left-wing 9th Circuit Court of Appeals (here).

But don’t confuse her with the facts. And don’t confuse her with the acquitted ‐ 44-year-old Therese Okoumou was convicted Monday in a New York courtroom.

She was brought up on misdemeanor charges, but she faces up to 18 months in prison.

According to court records, she’s a Congolese immigrant who once filed a complaint with the New York City Commission on Human Rights, seeking a judicial review and reversal of a “determination” it made regarding alleged incidents of abuse that Okoumou suffered at the hands of a social services agency on Staten Island where she worked.

Specifically, Okoumou claimed that in 2005, she was treated “in a demeaning manner” by her bosses and told that she would be fired “for complaining of discrimination.” It’s unclear why her complaint was tossed out.

In 2011, Okoumou made headlines after she was hit with an astounding 60 violations for illegally posting ads for her services as a personal trainer.

The Department of Sanitation slapped her with $4,500 in fines that year after she spent five hours one Sunday posting the fliers on Manhattan utility poles.

In 2017, she was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration, unlawful assembly and trespassing during a demonstration at the Department of Labor building on Varick Street. She had allegedly covered her mouth with tape and refused to respond to police demands.

On Wednesday, Okoumou told investigators she was part of a group protest organized by Rise and Resist NYC. The activists unfurled a banner on Liberty Island less than an hour before her climb that read: “ABOLISH ICE.”

Organizers initially tried to distance themselves from Okoumou’s Statue of Liberty stunt — saying she had “no connection” with their cause — but later admitted that she was part of the group.

Members described her on social media as a “total bad ass.”

“She’s very dedicated to the resistance generally, but specifically to the issues surrounding immigration and the treatment immigrants have been receiving from ICE and Customs and Border Control,” explained Jay Walker, a Rise and Resist activist. “She’s been an active member for about four or five months.”

'Oxford Experts' be damned! A meat tax is a rotten, regressive idea
[Wash Examiner] Despite our political divisions, here’s a sentiment most Americans can agree on: "You can take my bacon from my cold, dead hands."

Our love affair with the succulent strips has seen everything from bacon lip-gloss to bacon-flavored vodka. We’ve long enjoyed the stuff ‐ pork belly futures were first traded on the Chicago Exchange in 1961.

Unfortunately, the self-anointed "food police," who think Santa should be having water and salad instead of milk and cookies ‐ think bacon is at the center of a public health crisis. They have a solution: Tax it.

And not just bacon, but all meat.

This fall, Oxford researchers suggested taxing beef, bacon, sausage, and other meats. Their justification is on very shaky public health grounds. In short, they claim that meat is bad for people, and therefore the government should tax it. It’s the latest version of the "sin tax."

In our own time, we have seen soft drinks, fruit juice, plastic bags, and even straws similarly targeted by like-minded prohibitionists. Considering the growth, these taxes and their proponents aiming to alter the American lifestyle will clearly not be constrained by a strategy of appeasement.

It’s shocking that this needs to be said, but there are a number of downsides to taxing an entire food group. Chief among them are public health concerns, especially for the poorest among us. Meat is a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Affordable meat helps ensure a diet with sufficient protein for millions of Americans at or near the poverty line, to say nothing of the rest of us.

Meat is a perfectly natural part of the human diet ‐ scientists believe eating meat is what allowed human brains to evolve ‐ and the government recommends meat as a protein source. (The same isn’t true for traditional targets of "sin taxes," such as cigarettes.)

A meat tax, much like a soda tax, would ultimately be regressive and disproportionately harm the poorest among us. Low and middle-income Americans spend roughly half their income on consumption sales taxes, while upper income Americans spend only about 0.8 percent of their income on those same taxes.

In fact, it has an impact on the economy that advocates may not anticipate. When Philadelphia enacted its soda tax, 1,200 people lost their jobs. Meanwhile, Philadelphians did not stop drinking soda but bought from surrounding cities to escape the high tax.

All things considered, it’s hard to view a meat tax as anything more than a way to punish the poor, in terms of nutrition, quality of life, and expenses.

Governments have no business telling us what to eat. It’s up to us to make the best decisions about our diets. While the vegans over at PETA and the Humane Society of the United States would surely be pleased by the nanny state increasing the cost of meat, these same people would likely drool at the idea of altering the packaging of meat, much like has been done with cigarette boxes.

Instead of descending down the rabbit hole of restricting consumer choice based on what the government (or Oxford researchers) think is "good" or "bad," here’s a radical idea: Let people make their own choices at the grocery store without government placing its thumb on the scales and trying to unduly and improperly influence our choices.

Nation of Islam receiving federal cash to teach prisoners
[Wash Examiner] The Nation of Islam and its leaders have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the U.S. government since 2008 to teach religious study programs for federal prison inmates, according to records reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

A black nationalist group led by Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam preaches that white people are "blue-eyed devils" and Jews are "the synagogue of Satan." Its leaders have received at least $364,500 in contracts and awards from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice between fiscal 2008 and fiscal 2019.

The funding was designed to provide "Nation of Islam religious services," "Nation of Islam spiritual guide services," "Nation of Islam study services," and other related programming led by the organization’s leaders, according to Bureau of Prison records. The Nation of Islam has been labeled a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

New York Republican Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, told the Washington Examiner the funding was "beyond the pale."

He said: "Categorically, no group or entity or individual associated any way with Farrakhan or the Nation of Islam should receive any federal funding. What Farrakhan preaches is hatred and anti-Semitism and racism, and to use any federal money for any group that’s he’s involved with that do any type of teaching or proselytizing is just wrong."

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, called the funding "really outrageous and remarkable." He noted that a court ruling in 2003 prohibited federal prisons from banning Nation of Islam reading materials on First Amendment grounds. But he said this ruling doesn’t require the U.S. government to provide money to the organization.

German court sentences man over anti-migrant illegal gun site
[DW] The right-wing activist had urged people to arm themselves against migrants colonists. A judge said he had used used racist sentiment to help sell the illegal weapons.

A German court on Tuesday sentenced a far-right activist to prison for the illegal sale of 167 weapons on an anti-immigrant website.

Mario R., whose last name was not given in line with German privacy laws, was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison and had €99,100 ($112,287) confiscated for illicit trafficking in firearms.

The 35-year-old German national ran a website called "Migrantenschreck," which roughly translates as "Scourge of Moslem colonists Migrants." The website urged people to "arm themselves against refugees."

The portal sold gas-powered pistols that fire high-velocity rubber bullets, crossbows, rubber ammunition and similar weapons. It also featured a ticker on sensationalist anti-immigrant stories.

On the website, men in tutorial videos were seen using the weapons to destroy cardboard cutouts of migrants colonists and leading German politicians, including Chancellor Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
"Protect yourself and your family," proclaimed the now-defunct site.

According to the indictment, Mario R. sold the guns from Hungary to buyers in Germany between May and November 2016. The weapons were legal in Hungary but required a permit in Germany.

Mario R. admitted to the crime, but maintained that he was not aware of German law. He can still appeal the verdict and was allowed to leave the court so long as he reports to police.

The judge said that the defendant had used racist sentiments "in a particularly insidious way."

He was tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in Budapest in 2016 on a European arrest warrant.

Syrian refugees in Germany required to renew passports at pro-Assad embassies
[DW] Germany is forcing people displaced by the Syrian war to get documents and hand over money at Syrian consulates loyal to Bashir al-Assad. Refugee advocates say this is inhumane and supports the brutal Assad regime.

Of the hundreds of thousands of displaced Syrians who have come to Germany since 2014, many enjoy only "subsidiary protection" and not full refugee status. Among other things, this means that they are dependent on embassies loyal to the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
Under German law, people with various levels of political asylum or similar protection in Germany have to actively cooperate in procuring identity documentation, including passports. And more and more Syrians are being granted only subsidiary rather than full refugee status. Whereas 99.7 percent of Syrians coming to Germany in 2015 were classed as full refugees, last year only 38.2 percent were ‐ with 61 percent enjoying only subsidiary protection.

The Strasbourg shooter and the Polish musician who tried to stop him
[DW] Five people died in the Strasbourg attack. Among them was a Polish musician who had spoken out in favor of a Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
without borders. Many people view him as a hero, others have criticized his liberal views on migration.

It happened on December 11, in the middle of the Christmas season in downtown Strasbourg. The gunman opened fire and, according to French Sherlocks, yelled out "holy shit! Allahu akbar" ("God is great" in Arabic). Polish musician, journalist and European Parliament tour guide Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski stood together with several friends, among them Italian journalist Antonio Megalizzi, in front of the music club Les Savons d'Helene, near the Christmas market.

MAJOR BLOODBATH PREVENTED
A sheepdog, not a sheep.
According to Polish media, citing witness accounts, the two men stepped into the way of the armed shooter and blocked the door to the club. This act of heroism may have prevented a much greater bloodbath. Both of the men were maimed in the attack and died a few days later.

"Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski, a French-Polish journalist who was injured in Strasbourg together with Antonio Megalizzi, is no longer alive. Rest in peace. We are fighting terrorism until victory!" wrote Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, on Twitter when he learned of Orent-Niedzielski's death.

"Our brother Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski has just left us. I thank you for the love and strength you gave him," wrote Jakub Niedzielski, brother of the late musician, on Facebook.

APPRECIATION IN THE HOMELAND
Polish President Andrzej Duda, a former MEP who remembered Orent-Niedzielski from his time in the European Parliament, also expressed his shock on Twitter: "He was fatally injured when he saved the lives of the other people."

The country's mrime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, has promised the victim's family a life-long state pension. "The Pole has paid with his life for the lives of other people," he said.

Orent-Niedzielski, originally from Katowice in the south of Poland, had lived in Strasbourg for 20 years. He emigrated from Poland with his mother at the age of 16, but in recent years he regularly visited his home town.

THE CONVINCED EUROPEAN
His friends, who called him Bartek, spoke of his great enthusiasm for the idea of an open Europe. He was also committed to supporting the LGBT movement, Jewish culture and solidarity with the Paleostinian people. Orent-Niedzielski's plan was to open a linguistic cafe in Strasbourg where people of different languages and cultures could meet.

"Always full of ideas, an energy volcano, always with a smile on his face," recalls Dariusz Zalega from Katowice. "When we talked about the terrorist attack in Gay Paree in 2015, he didn't look for the culprits where fanatics, racists and know-it-alls were looking for them. He believed responsibility laid with those who cause wars, sell arms and spread hatred. His message was: 'Everyone is my brother.'"

A little over a year before his death, in July 2017, Orent-Niedzielski wrote enthusiastically on Facebook about his new job as a tour guide at the European Parliament. While working for Europhonica, a European Parliament-focused radio station, he tried to convince his listeners of the advantages of a multicultural continent.

CRITICISM OF PRO-EUROPEAN ATTITUDE
Lorenzo Consoli, who works in Strasbourg as a correspondent for the Italian news agency Aksanews, also spoke about Orent-Niedzielski and his Italian colleague Antonio Megalizza in a journalist briefing at the European Parliament.

The two had had the ability "to talk for hours on end about all sorts of European issues. Bartek wanted to bring every injustice to light and Antonio was always looking for concrete solutions to problems," Consoli said.

But the two have also been criticized posthumously for their pro-European attitude, Consoli told DW.

"There are some bad comments claiming that such terrorist attacks would not have taken place if Europe had not kept its doors so open," he said.

The 29-year-old perpetrator of the attack, Cherif Chekatt, was born in Strasbourg. He was rubbed out by police after a two-day, large-scale manhunt.

Tarin stabbed Raneem and her mother Khaola, who had tried to defend and protect her daughter, to death in Solihull on August 27.

A video the night of the crime shows Tarin stalking Raneem and her mother and following them to a shisha lounge where they engaged in a verbal brawl that triggered the mother to slap him.

Raneem contacted the police but she and her mother left before the patrol arrived.

Tarin then followed them home and stabbed them both to death outside their home.

Police tossed in the clink

Argentina in recession as economy shrinks again
[PULSE.NG] Argentina
...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita...
is in recession after it's economy shrank by 3.5 percent during the third trimester of 2018, the state statistics bureau said on Tuesday.

It was the second such shrinkage in a row after the economy shrank 4.0 percent in the second quarter, with respect to the same period a year ago.

Gross domestic product is down by 1.4 percent from January to September compared with 2017.

The hardest hit sectors were business (down 8.9 percent), fishing (-7.3 percent) and manufacturing (-6.6). But finance was up by 5.1 percent.

Argentina has been gripped by an economic crisis this year that forced President Mauricio Macri to agree a $56 billion bailout loan with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It came as confidence in the peso crumbled, sending the currency into a freefall that saw it lose half its value against the dollar.

The IMF predicts that Argentina's economy will shrink by 2.6 percent this year and another 1.6 percent in 2019.

Reporter Who Met with Christopher Steele Now Doubts The Infamous Dossier
[Daily Caller] The investigative reporter who broke the first story based on allegations from Christopher Steele offered a surprising assessment of the former British spy’s infamous dossier, which alleges a vast conspiracy of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

“Would you agree that a lot of what’s in the Steele dossier has been somewhat vindicated?” Mediaite columnist John Ziegler asked Michael Isikoff, a co-author of the book “Russian Roulette: The Inside Story on Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump.”

“No,” Isikoff responded in an interview released Saturday.

“You would not?” asked Ziegler.

“No,” Isikoff repeated.

Isikoff’s views about the dossier are significant because of his central role in advancing the narrative that the Russian government conspired with Trump associates.

Isikoff is the journalist who wrote the Sept. 23, 2016 article at Yahoo! News laying out Steele’s allegations that Trump campaign adviser Carter Page met secretly in Moscow with two Kremlin insiders. Isikoff’s co-author, David Corn, is the only other reporter to have written about Steele’s claims prior to the 2016 election.

Russia, Turkey, Iran renew push for new Syrian constitution
[PULSE.NG] Russia, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, Iran and the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
voiced hope Tuesday that a committee charged with writing a new Syrian constitution will start work early next year.

The Damascus government, which is backed by Moscow and Tehran, has not yet agreed to the committee, saying it will only support a process that alters Syria's existing constitution.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov -- flanked by his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu -- read a joint declaration after talks with UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura.

Russia, Iran and opposition backer Turkey "agreed to take efforts aimed at convening the first session of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva early next year," Lavrov said.

The committee has become the centrepiece of UN peace efforts in Syria and aims to set up elections that can turn the page on seven years of devastating war.

De Mistura, who will be replaced as UN envoy on January 7, praised the "significant joint input" from the three powers.

The meeting marked a final moment in de Mistura's four-year tenure, which did not produce a breakthrough for peace.

An op-ed in Syria's pro-government al-Watan newspaper on Tuesday underscored de Mistura's tense relationship with Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
's regime.

"In Damascus, we will never be sorry for Staffan de Mistura's departure," al-Watan said.

De Mistura is "leaving with regret that he couldn't destroy the Syrian state and couldn't impose the West's agenda on Syrians," it continued, while chastising efforts to "impose a new constitution on Syrians."

Trial of Indonesian accused of Kim Jong Nam murder on hold
[PULSE.NG] The trial of an Indonesian woman accused of assassinating the North Korean leader's half-brother was put on hold Tuesday due to a row over witness statements, the latest delay in the case.

Siti Aisyah from Indonesia and Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam have been on trial for over a year, accused of murdering Kim Jong Nam by smearing nerve agent VX on his face at Kuala Lumpur airport.

The brazen liquidation in February last year shocked the world but the women have denied murder, saying they believed they were taking part in a prank and were tricked by North Korean agents.

The women, in their 20s, went on trial together in October 2017 but proceedings have moved slowly due to the large numbers of witnesses and the fact hearings are held infrequently.

The defence stage of Aisyah's trial had originally been due to begin in November but was delayed to January after her main lawyer fell ill.

And on Tuesday proceedings in Aisyah's case were temporarily halted when the High Court refused to grant her lawyers access to some witness statements, and they decided to appeal.

Huong's trial is due to resume in March and the court will rule Friday whether it will go ahead, or be put on hold with Aisyah's.

The prosecution stage of the trial, during which the women appeared for hearings together, wrapped up in August. The defence parts of their trials will be held separately.

Aisyah's lawyer Gooi Soon Seng said the witness statements were "essential" for the defence and he would appeal the ruling -- a process that could take months.

"Without (the statements) there would be a real miscarriage of justice. It would compromise our case," he told news hounds at the court in Shah Alam, outside Kuala Lumpur.

The seven statements are from witnesses including people who drove Kim Jong Nam around in Malaysia and acquaintances of Aisyah. Prosecutors have refused to hand them over, arguing they should not be made public.

Under current laws, the women will be sentenced to death by hanging if convicted of murdering the estranged relative of the North's leader, Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
Malaysia's new government, which took power in May, has vowed to abolish capital punishment for all crimes, although parliament still needs to vote on the change.

Belgian prime minister announces resignation
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel announced his resignation Tuesday, less than two weeks after his main coalition partner quit in a row over migration, leaving him leading a minority government.

Michel, who took office in 2014, lost the backing of the New Phlegmish Alliance (N-VA) over his support for the UN migration pact, a cause celebre for European anti-immigration parties.

The resignation comes two days after demonstrations against the pact in central Brussels descended into scuffles, with police forced to use tear gas and water cannon to restore order.

After a debate in parliament where opposition parties refused to lend their support to allow his government to keep working until legislative elections in May next year, Michel announced he would quit.

"I have taken the decision to submit my resignation and it is my intention to go to see the king immediately," Michel said.

The Phlegmish nationalist N-VA, led by powerful Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever, had made political demands which Michel judged "unacceptable" -- notably on possible constitutional changes.

The liberal steadfastly defended the Marrakesh migration pact, saying it presented an "opportunity for better European and international cooperation.

The non-binding UN accord, which would promote a common global approach to migrant flows, was initially supported by all four parties in Belgium’s coalition.

But the N-VA changed its mind in late October and pulled out of the coalition the day before Michel flew to Morocco to sign the deal.

Yemen's Hodeida calm after ceasefire takes effect
[PULSE.NG] Yemen's flashpoint city of Hodeida was calm Tuesday as a ceasefire took effect and a team including members of the warring sides prepared to monitor the truce agreed at talks in Sweden.

A lasting ceasefire would be a major step in efforts to end Yemen's devastating war, which has killed thousands and left 14 million people on the brink of famine.

The truce which came into force overnight was due to be followed by a team of observers deploying "within 24 hours", a United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
official said.

The Redeployment Coordination Committee includes members of the Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned Houthis but is chaired by the UN, said the official who requested anonymity.

"Both parties said publicly they are abiding by the ceasefire," the official told AFP.

The observers are due to oversee the implementation of the truce, the withdrawal of both warring parties from Hodeida city and the pullout of Huthis from its major ports.

The committee chair is expected to report to the UN Security Council on a weekly basis, as part of a diplomatic push to end the conflict which erupted in 2014.

The war between the Houthis and troops loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi escalated in 2015, when a Saudi-led military coalition stepped in on the government's side.

Since then some 10,000 people have been killed, according to the World Health Organization, but some rights groups believe the toll is far higher.

'COMPLETE CALM'
The ceasefire was meant to enter into force at midnight (2100 GMT) on Monday but festivities continued until 03:00 am, pro-government sources and residents said.

Calm held on Tuesday morning in Hodeida city, whose port is the gateway for the vast majority of imports to Yemen.

"There has been complete calm since 03:00 am Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
time in the city of Hodeida," a military source loyal to the government told AFP.

Residents confirmed by phone that there has been no fighting between the government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition and Iran-aligned Houthis since 03:00 am.

But it was not possible to determine if the halt in fighting was in response to the ceasefire or just a temporary stoppage.

Residents said that daily fighting would usually be fierce in the evening and at night, before coming to a standstill at dawn.

The two warring sides have welcomed the truce in the strategic Red Sea province.

The agreement reached last week included an "immediate ceasefire" in Hodeida and its surrounds, but the truce was delayed as fighting continued.

HODEIDA RESIDENTS 'HOPEFUL'
UN envoy Martin Griffiths said on Sunday that the UN was working with both sides to ensure the ceasefire accord was "implemented timely and properly".

In addition to the withdrawal of fighters from Hodeida, the agreement included a planned prisoner swap involving some 15,000 detainees.

A "mutual understanding" was also reached to facilitate aid deliveries to Yemen's third city Taiz -- under the control of loyalists but besieged by rebels.

The two sides have agreed to meet again in late January for more talks to define the framework for negotiations on a comprehensive peace settlement.

Hodeida residents said they hoped the truce would lead to lasting peace.

"We are hopeful that things will go back to the way they were and that there would be no aggression, no air strikes and lasting security," Amani Mohammed told AFP.

Another resident, Mohammed al-Saikel, said he was optimistic the ceasefire would pave the way for a broader truce.

"We are hopeful about this ceasefire in Hodeida and one for Yemen in general," he said.

"We will reach out in peace to whoever does the same."

Rubble and Charred Cars in Former Syria Jihadist Hub
[AnNahar] Burnt-out cars, craters and collapsed buildings dot the side of a road in the Syrian village of Hajin, after US-backed forces expelled the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

The sound of mortar fire and flying bullets resounded inside Hajin on Saturday, as huge clouds of grey smoke billowed over the outskirts of the large village in eastern Syria.

The yellow flag of the Syrian Democratic Forces flew above one building, after the Kurdish-led fighters seized the village from IS jihadists on Friday.

"Hajin has come under the control of our forces," SDF commander Zanar Awaz said.

"We are now fighting on the outskirts of Hajin and we are preparing to enter nearby villages," he said in Kurdish, a shot of white in his short black hair.

"We will finish off this terrorist group."

Hajin lies on the east bank of the Euphrates in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the border with Iraq.

The village's capture marks a milestone in a massive and costly operation backed by a US-led coalition to expel IS from eastern Syria.

On Saturday, armoured vehicles brought in SDF fighters to reinforce the front lines outside Hajin, as coalition planes and helicopters flew overhead.

An SDF fighter sitting on the top of a vehicle with fellow combattants flashed a victory sign.

- TUNNELS AND TRENCHES -
The Kurdish-led SDF launched an offensive in September to expel IS from a pocket including its main village Hajin, but their advance has been fraught with obstacles.

"We've been facing a lot of difficulties: IS boom-mobiles, suicide kaboomers. Most of them are foreign," Awaz said.

On Saturday morning, IS launched a counterattack, but the SDF said it succeeded in repelling them with the backing of coalition air strikes.

Since the start of the operation on September 10, at least 930 jihadists and more than 540 SDF fighters have been killed, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said.

In addition, more than 320 civilians have bit the dust, many in coalition air strikes, according to the Observatory. The coalition has however repeatedly denied targeting civilians.

But no civilians were visible in Hajin on Saturday, after thousands fled the village and nearby areas.

A convoy of armoured cars ferried in US soldiers, churning up dust along the way.

On a hill that used to act as the village cemetery, tunnels and trenches dug by the jihadists lay covered in sheets and colourful blankets.

Bullet and artillery shell casings covered the ground.

- 'DEATH IS THEIR DESTINY' -
SDF fighter Bahouz, who did not give his last name, remembered first entering the district's hospital.

He said he took pictures of the dead jihadists he saw there.

"They think they'll go to paradise, but we killed them," he said, carrying a gun and hand grenades around his waist.

"Death is their destiny as they destroyed everything."

IS swept across large swathes of Syria and neighbouring Iraq in 2014, implementing their brutal interpretation of Islamic law in areas they controlled.

But they have since seen their dream of a state crumble, as they have lost most of that territory to various offensives.

In Syria, IS fighters are holding out in what remains of the pocket that once included Hajin, including the villages of al-Shaafa and Sousa.

They have also retained a presence in the vast Badia desert, but that front is managed by Russia-backed regime forces.

According to the Observatory, a total of 17,000 SDF fighters are involved in the fight to seize the eastern pocket, compared to around 2,000 jihadists.

Inside Hajin village, SDF fighter Mohammed al-Mohammed said his spirits were high.

"There's only a bit left" to capture from IS, said the 19-year-old.

"We will head on to al-Shaafa and Sousa to liberate them and win, God willing."

Yemeni army shoots down Iranian-made Houthi drone in Marib
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Yemeni army announced on Tuesday that a military drone belonging to the Houthi

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias was shot down in the eastern province of Marib.

The official website of the Yemeni army, that members of the 25th Mika brigade were able to shoot down the plane in the areas between the districts of Harib and Jubba south of the Marib province.

"After inspecting the wreckage of the aircraft carrying explosives, it turned out to be Iranian-made," the statement read.

Several drones have been shot down in recent weeks in different Yemeni fronts where flight engineers from the Yemeni army confirmed that they were made in Iran. In April, two planes of the same type were dropped inside Saudi territory.

A report issued by the Center for Armed Conflict Research in London explained that Iran’s military technology had reached the Houthi militias by helping them use the drones they had previously said were homemade and which were smuggled to the Houthis with other weapons including ballistic missiles.

DOJ Defines Bump Stocks as ‘Machineguns,' Gives Public 90 Days to Hand Them Over
[Breitbart] The Department of Justice announced Tuesday the finalized form of the bump stock ban, achieved by amending ATF regulation so as to define bump stocks as "machineguns."

Breitbart News possesses a copy of the DOJ’s summary of the ban, which states:
The Department of Justice is amending the regulations of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to clarify that bump-stock-type devices-meaning "bump fire" stocks, slide-fire devices, and devices with certain similar characteristics-are "machineguns" as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968 because such devices allow a shooter of a semiautomatic firearm to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger.

The summary says a bump stock allows the trigger of a semiautomatic firearm to reset between the firing of each round, but describes the bump stock-equipped "semiautomatic firearm" as "self-acting or self-regulating," and therefore a "machinegun."

The DOJ’s summary explains that there will be no grandfathering of pre-owned bump stocks. Rather, all bump stocks must be destroyed or handed over the ATF within 90 days of the ban’s effective date:
With limited exceptions, the Gun Control Act, as amended, makes it unlawful for any person to transfer or possess a machinegun unless it was lawfully possessed prior to the effective date of the statute. The bumpstock-type devices covered by this final rule were not in existence prior to the effective date of the statute, and therefore will be prohibited when this rule becomes effective. Consequently, under the final rule, current possessors of these devices will be required to destroy the devices or abandon them at an ATF office prior to the effective date of the rule.

The push for a bump stock ban begin in Congress following the October 1, 2017, Las Vegas attack. But public support for such a ban was scant and the Congressional push for a ban waned.

At President Trump’s behest the ATF began seeking public comment on a regulatory ban of bump stocks in December 2017. In February 2018 Trump made clear he had directed the DOJ to ban the firearm accessories.

The bump stock ban is expected to appear in the federal register this Friday, thereafter giving owners 90 days to destroy them or turn them in. The 90 days ends March 21, 2019.

On December 18, 2018, a senior DOJ official told Breitbart News there are no plans to compensate bump stock owners for the financial value of their legally purchased bump stock accessories. The official also said the DOJ expects a legal challenge against the bump stock ban and is prepared to fight any suit that is filed.

German police raid Berlin mosque over suspected 'terror financing'
[DW] Authorities raided several buildings in the German capital as part of a larger terrorism probe. One imam is suspected of sending money to an Islamist fighter in Syria in order to carry out "terrorist criminal acts."

Police raided a mosque and several other buildings in Berlin on Tuesday morning in an operation into suspected terrorism financing, prosecutors said.

State criminal police, intelligence officers as well as special police forces took part in the raids, which included the As-Sahaba mosque in the Berlin neighborhood of Wedding.

One of the main suspects was identified as Ahmad A., a holy man at the mosque who preaches under the name of Abul Baraa.

The 45-year-old is suspected of sending money to an Islamist fighter in Syria "for purchasing military equipment to carry out terrorist criminal acts," prosecutors said on Twitter.

Authorities did not immediately release further details about the raids or provide further details about when the alleged money transfer took place.

The As-Sahaba mosque is under surveillance by Germany's domestic intelligence agency and is considered an important meeting point for members of Germany's radical Salafist scene, according to the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.

The mosque was founded in 2010 by the German-Egyptian Islamist Reda Seyam,

China-Japan-Koreas
How Greenland could become China's Arctic base
[bbc] China is flexing its muscles. As the second richest economy in the world, its businessmen and politicians are involved just about everywhere in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Now, though, China is taking a big interest in a very different part of the world: the Arctic.

It has started calling itself a "near-Arctic" power, even though Beijing is almost 3,000km (1,800 miles) from the Arctic Circle. It has bought or commissioned several ice-breakers - including nuclear-powered ones - to carve out new routes for its goods through the Arctic ice.

And it is eyeing Greenland as a particularly useful way-station on its polar silk road.

Greenland is self-governing, though still nominally controlled by Denmark.

It is important strategically for the United States, which maintains a vast military base at Thule, in the far north. Both the Danes and the Americans are deeply worried that China should be showing such an interest in Greenland.

LEAST DENSELY POPULATED PLACE ON EARTH
You've got to go there to get an idea of how enormous Greenland is.

It's the 12th-largest territory in the world, 10 times bigger than the United Kingdom: two million square kilometres of rock and ice.

Yet its population is miniscule at 56,000 – roughly the size of a town in England.

As a result, Greenland is the least densely populated territory on Earth. About 88% of the people are Inuit; most of the rest are ethnically Danish, many of whose ancestors started colonising it 1,000 years ago. The Inuit arrived several centuries later.

Over the years neither the Americans nor the Danes have put all that much money into Greenland, and Nuuk, the capital, feels pretty poor.

Every day, small numbers of people gather in the centre to sell things that will generate a bit of cash: cast-off clothes, children's schoolbooks, cakes they've made, dried fish, reindeer-horn carvings. Some people also sell the bloody carcases of the big King Eider ducks, which Inuits are allowed to hunt but aren't supposed to sell for profit.

CHINA'S AIR POWER
At present you can only fly to Nuuk in small propeller-driven planes. In four years, though, that will change spectacularly.

The Greenlandic government has decided to build three big international airports capable of taking large passenger jets.

China is bidding for the contracts.

Saturn's rings are disappearing at a 'worst-case scenario' rate, NASA says
Saturn is losing its signature rings at a "worst-case scenario" rate, said NASA scientists, and the bands could disappear completely within 100 million years.
I blame global warming.
In a study published Monday in the journal "Icarus," researchers confirmed Saturn's rings are disappearing at the maximum rate first estimated through observations by Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes that launched in the 1970s.

The rings are being pulled into the planet "by gravity as a dusty rain of ice particles under the influence of Saturn’s magnetic field," NASA said.

The phenomenon is called "ring rain," and it drains enough water from rings to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool every 30 minutes, said James O’Donoghue of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

"From this alone, the entire ring system will be gone in 300 million years," O'Donoghue said in a statement. "But add to this the Cassini-spacecraft measured ring-material detected falling into Saturn’s equator, and the rings have less than 100 million years to live."

Scientists are still trying to learn how Saturn gained its rings, which consist mostly of ice and rock ranging from the size of a grain of sand to that of a house, NASA said.

The study suggests Saturn acquired its rings later in its life span, instead of when it formed 4 billion-plus years ago.

"We are lucky to be around to see Saturn’s ring system, which appears to be in the middle of its lifetime," said O'Donoghue.

An animation released by NASA shows Saturn's inner rings disappearing first as they get sucked into the planet, followed by its outer rings.

Arizona governor names Martha McSally to McCain Senate seat
[FOX61] Arizona’s governor has named Rep. Martha McSally to replace U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl in the U.S. Senate seat that belonged to Sen. John Maverick McCain
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. As an ordinary citizen he greased the infamous hookers peeing on the Obamabed in Moscow dossier in an attempt to smear President Trump...
Republican Gov. Doug Ducey announced Tuesday that McSally will take over after Kyl’s resignation becomes effective Dec. 31. McSally lost the Senate race to Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.

"With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona," Ducey said in a statement. "I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility and look forward to working with her and Senator-Elect Sinema to get positive things done."

McSally will serve until the 2020 election, when voters will elect someone to serve the final two years of McCain’s term.

Kyl was appointed after McCain’s death from brain cancer in August. He previously served in the Senate for Arizona and had said he would only commit to serving until the end of 2018.

The appointment puts Arizona back in the political spotlight just a month after Democrats won their first statewide race in a decade. Democrats hope that the state swings again in 2020 and are expected to target it both in the presidential race and the contest for McCain’s seat.

Arizona governor taps Martha McSally to fill Senate seat once held by McCain
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed fellow Republican Rep. Martha McSally to the Senate, he announced Tuesday, picking a favorite of GOP leaders to fill the seat John McCain held for decades.

McSally, who lost a close race for Arizona’s other Senate seat this year, will succeed Sen. Jon Kyl (R). Kyl will step down at the end of the year following a brief time in McCain’s seat after McCain’s death in August.

"With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility," Ducey said in a statement.

McSally is expected to run for the seat in a 2020 special election, setting the stage for a potential marquee contest in a battleground state. The seat will also be on the ballot in 2022.

"I am humbled and grateful to have this opportunity to serve and be a voice for all Arizonans," McSally said in a statement issued by Ducey’s office. She said she looked forward to working with Sen.-elect Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrat who defeated her in November.

McSally will become the 25th woman serving in the Senate at the start of the 116th Congress, a record high.

Ducey’s decision comes after weeks of tense relations with McSally and her political strategists. Last week, Ducey and his close confidants were frustrated with McSally ‐ to the point that the governor’s interest in appointing her had diminished, according to two people familiar with this thinking.

But McSally remained a finalist, and in recent days, she has tried to improve her standing with Ducey and the other Republicans she clashed with during her campaign.

On Friday, McSally apologized to McCain’s widow, Cindy McCain, for her lack of praise for the senator on a defense bill named in his honor, according to two people familiar with the conversation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private discussion. Ducey encouraged the meeting.

McSally, a onetime Trump critic, reinvented herself as a staunch supporter of the president during her Senate campaign. She largely avoided mentioning John McCain, who had traded public criticism with the president.

Her posture bothered McCain’s friends and family. Cindy McCain emphasized the importance of respecting the legacy of the seat during her meeting with McSally, according to the people familiar with their conversation.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Cindy McCain wrote, "My husband’s greatest legacy was placing service to AZ & USA ahead of his own self-interest. I respect @dougducey’s decision to appoint @RepMcSally to fill the remainder of his term. Arizonans will be pulling for her, hoping that she will follow his example of selfless leadership."

The 40-year-old had long been self-conscious of his bald spots, until his Iraqi friends told him what had worked for them -- hair implants at a new clinic in their hometown.

"They told me the equipment was modern, the nurses competent and the prices good," Najib said.

In Mosul, the average hair implant procedure costs around $800, including the follow-up after the operation.

Nearly 90 kilometres (50 miles) to the east in Iraq's Arbil, or even further north in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Plasma injections to prevent hair loss cost around $63 in Mosul, but at least $20 more in Arbil.

In addition to the difference in price, Najib would have had to put up money and time for travel.

"Going to a clinic in Mosul is much easier, as I don't have time to travel outside Mosul," he told AFP.

Judge Emmet Sullivan declares Flynn an 'unregistered agent of a foreign country - sold out his country.'
Appears Judge Sullivan got the flog Flynn memo.
[NYT] WASHINGTON ‐ A federal judge on Tuesday postponed the sentencing of Michael T. Flynn, President Trump’s first national security adviser, after warning Mr. Flynn that he could face prison for lying to federal investigators about his conversations with the Russian ambassador during the presidential transition and hiding his role lobbying for Turkey.

At Mr. Flynn’s sentencing hearing in Federal District Court in Washington, Judge Emmet G. Sullivan called Mr. Flynn’s crimes "a very serious offense" and said he was not hiding his "disgust" at what Mr. Flynn had done.

"All along you were an unregistered agent of a foreign country while serving as the national security adviser," the judge told Mr. Flynn. "Arguably that undermines everything that this flag over here stands for. Arguably you sold your country out."

Later in the hearing, the judge corrected himself, noting that Mr. Flynn’s work on behalf of Turkey had ended in mid-November of 2016, before Mr. Flynn became national security adviser. The judge acknowledged he had made a mistake and said he felt "terrible about that."

In his communication, Omar spoke of striking the Vatican on Christmas day or shortly afterwards, when there would be "the pope and so many people" and the church would be "full, full, full". Police discovered pictures of the Vatican on the man’s phone, which he had downloaded from the internet.

Two Maute gunrunners nabbed in Valenzuela City
[Rappler] Two alleged gunrunners for the Maute terrorist organization responsible for the Islamist takeover of Marawi City, were collared along the North Luzon Expressway in Valenzuela City on December 16.

According to the police report, partners Edgardo Medel and Rosemarie Medel were nabbed by special operations agents, after being caught in a buy-bust operation. Police were able to find the two with the help of a tipster. This source identified the pair as suppliers for the Maute group and are already taking orders for the 2019 elections.

After building up their case and establishing contact with the suspects, undercover cops arranged for a staged purchase. Right after the deal, cops arrested the couple. Seized from the two were two assault rifles, a handgun, and 12,893 rounds of live ammunition for M-60 light machine guns.

The couple brought their three children in the transaction. They were turned over to their other relatives, police said.

Judge Emmet Sullivan Delays Sentencing of Michael Flynn for 90 Days…
Posted as a comment late last evening by our own NoMoreBS
[The Last Refuge] Without cameras in the courtroom we are constrained to understand the Flynn sentencing hearing today through the perspectives of others. The Daily Caller has an article [See Here] and a thread on the events [is Here] and a great video recap of the events by Will Chamberlain [is HERE].

That said, there is much speculation and punditry delivered opinion on what took place; and how the hearing ended with Judge Emmet Sullivan delaying the sentencing of Michael Flynn for 90-days. While we await the transcript from the court, here’s my view.

Last night, while contemplating the possible outcomes of the hearing, there was a strong likelihood of exactly what happened today.... but only if Judge Sullivan was aware of the conflicted position of Michael Flynn, and approached the hearing from that perspective.

Flynn took the guilty plea of lying to investigators to avoid Mueller charging him over the Turkish lobbying issues (FARA).

Happily, it appears Judge Sullivan is well aware of this very specific dynamic and the issues therein. Special Counsel Robert Mueller used the unregistered foreign lobbying charges, and -more importantly- the devastating narrative that can be drawn from those FARA violations, as leverage over Flynn. Based on the comments from Judge Sullivan, it is clear he is aware of this dynamic.

him for the drive-by shooting death of a 66-year-old woman.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson told news outlets 17-year-old Latavious Betts was charged as an adult with murder and aggravated assault in Annie Walton’s Dec. 7 death.

Johnson said Betts fired a dozen or more shots into a house near Verona, killing Walton and wounding four others.

Betts was earlier charged with first-degree murder for a March 22 shooting at a Verona car wash. He’s also charged with aggravated assault in a July 8 convenience store shooting that injured two.

without bail because he’s accused of violating previous release terms. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer. Betts was captured Friday after a week on the run.

Heavy clashes continue in Deir Ezzor as Daesh refuses to give up last Euphrates pocket
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) is not quite done in the eastern part of the Euphrates River Valley region, despite losing a significant portion of territory to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) over the last two weeks.

In an effort to take advantage of the rough weather conditions, the Islamic State launched a big counter-attack in eastern Hajin on Monday.

The terrorist group was able to retake several areas from the Syrian Democratic Forces east of Hajin before making their push to reenter the town.

While the Islamic State claims they are entrenched inside of eastern Hajin, the Syrian Democratic Forces deny the terrorist group possesses any portion of the town.

With a limited U.S. air presence over Hajin due to the weather, the Syrian Democratic Forces have been forced to rely on their ground troops to beat back the terrorist combatants.

Egyptian policeman referred to criminal court for murder of two Minya Copts
[AlAhram] Egypt's general prosecution has said that it is referring a police sergeant to criminal court over the murder of a Coptic man and his son in Upper Egypt's Minya last week.

In an official statement, the prosecution said police sergeant Rabie Mostafa Khalifa, who was assigned to guard the Church of Nahdet El-Qadasa, was referred to court in an emergency session for killing Emad Kamal and his son David.

The prosecution charged Khalifa with the premeditated murder of the two men using his service weapon after reviewing CCTV footage from the scene of the crime.

The prosecution said that Khalifa confessed to the crime, but did not reveal a possible motive.
“That uppity kufr spoke back to me, just like he was my equal,” he said. “I had no choice but to show him and his little boy which one of us belonged to the Master Religion.”
On Saturday, the prosecution said that the killing was sparked due to a "verbal altercation."

The incident has sparked outrage among citizens and Church officials.

Armed brigades in Libya's capital form Tripoli Protection Force
[Libya Observer] Special Deterrence Force (SDF), Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Revolutionaries Brigade, Eighth Brigade (Nawasi), Bab Tajoura Brigade, and Joint Deterrence and Intervention Force Abu Salim said in a statement that they had been united under Tripoli Protection Force.

The statement says that Tripoli Protection Force rejects using power to gain political benefits, adding that the unity of the brigades is an attempt to block the recent military movements in the western region.

"We have heard one party of the Libyan conflict trying to resort to using military actions in the western region and thus destabilize Tripoli again and lead to killings and injuries as well as a deduction of properties in the capital. That is why, unity among us is very vital." The statement reads.

It also hailed the efforts of the UNSMIL and its Head Ghassan Salame, pledging support for the upcoming Libyan National Conference in January, saying it would welcome hosting it in Tripoli.

"We reject referring the entire Libyan military institution to one person and taking advantage of it to seize power." The statement remarks.

The announcement of the coalition of forces - which all operate under the Presidential Council's government in Tripoli - came after a meeting in Tripoli port.
