Solar Power Advances in Kentucky
There. I gave it a PC-correct Title. It IS from Rooters.
Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities plan to seek approval from regulators to build a natural gas-fired power plant and a solar facility to replace retiring coal plants and meet future demand growth.

The utilities want to build the new gas plant at their Green River facility. It will generate about 700 megawatts of power using combined-cycle technology and cost about $700 million. One megawatt powers about 1,000 homes.
One megawatt = One million dollars = 1,000 homes = $1,000 a home. Not too bad, for initial capital cost, I'd say.
The solar facility will cost about $25 million and have a capacity of about 10-MW. The utilities said they are looking at several sites for the solar facility.
One megawatt = $2.5 million, or $2,500 per home. Hmmmm... carry the one .... that's - 250% more than natural gas. Watt a waste of money! Good thing the evil utilities will just eat up that cost and take it out of their evil shareholder profits! not
In 2011, the utilities announced they will retire 800 MW of older coal-fired generation at the Cane Run, Green River and Tyrone power plants over the next several years due in part to increased federal environmental regulations.

If approved, LG&E and KU said their overall generation capacity will be 59 percent coal-fired, 40 percent natural gas-fired and 1 percent renewable.
One percent renewable. Why, I bet that's a huge increase over five years ago!

#3  I have come to distrust the advertised power for green pôwer plants. More often than not is not an estimated yearly butepaj performance. Ie what the power plant will pe producing at noon on avery hot day in Jumy when there is excess capacity anyway. The yearly averge is a _lot_ less. And of course you solar power plant will probably be not of any hemp at the most critical moment of the year: Super Bowl's half time when millions of fridges fire up at the same time when people watching Super Bowl open the door and take a beer in it.

Also notice the disparity: 20 Mw to 700: 2.8%. In plain english: peanuts.

More Saudi Women Defy Driving Ban
[Ynet] Saudi women are opposing driving ban, taking wheel. 'More women are driving than ever; it's no longer as rejected,' activist says

Saudi women are increasingly getting behind the wheel in defiance of a driving ban ahead of a nationwide campaign planned by female activists for later this month, witnesses said.

A video posted on social networks this week shows a fully veiled woman driving in Riyadh as male motorists and families gave her the "thumbs up" in support.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Telecom Data Analysis Finds Link between 12-Member Terror Cell and Fatah al-Islam
[An Nahar] Twelve suspects charged with planning terrorist activities in Leb, including liquidations, have been in contact with members of Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Lebanon pot stirred.
terror group in Roumieh prison, al-Joumhouria daily reported on Thursday.

The newspaper said that analysis of the so-called telecommunications data revealed that the members of the network had contacted several Fatah al-Islam inmates in the prison.

The examination of the calls is ongoing to know the connection between the two sides, it said.

The State Commissioner to the Military Court, Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Wednesday the 12 suspects, including a Lebanese and 2 Syrians who are in jug, with plotting terrorist activities and forming an armed gang to carry out terrorist operations.

The charges include buying arms, rockets and bombs to plant them throughout Lebanese territories, and plotting liquidations against personalities in northern Leb who back the Syrian regime.

The suspects were also planning to booby-trap vehicles.

Security and judicial sources told al-Joumhouria that two personalities from the Syrian opposition were on the liquidation list of the 12-member network, in addition to several Sunni clergymen in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
who are supporters of the regime in Syria.

The daily identified the clergymen as Bilal Shaaban and his brother, in addition to another Sunni man -- Kamal Kheir, who heads a political association and a charity in northern Leb.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Extends Mandate for Strikes on Kurds in Iraq
[AnNahar] Turkey's parliament on Thursday extended for one year a mandate that would allow Ankara to order military strikes against Kurdish rebels holed up in neighboring northern Iraq.

The vote coincides with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's reforms to boost the rights of the country's sizable Kurdish community and secure an end to the nearly 30-year battle with the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

All opposition parties, except the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, gave solid backing to the motion providing the government with another year-long mandate for cross-border operations against PKK hideouts in northern Iraq.

The current mandate expires on October 17. Parliament has extended the mandate every year since it was first approved in 2007.

On September 30, Erdogan moved to scrap restrictions on the use of the Kurdish language, allowing it to be used in private schools and letting election candidates campaign in Kurdish.

The reforms are aimed at breaking an impasse in the grinding of the peace processor between Turkey and the PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies.

In March the PKK's tossed in the slammer
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
leader Abdullah Ocalan declared a ceasefire after months of clandestine negotiations with the Turkish secret service.

Last month, Kurdish rebels announced a suspension in their planned pull-out of their fighters from Turkish soil, accusing Ankara of not keeping its promises of reform. They called the measures introduced by Erdogan as unsatisfactory.

In return for withdrawing its fighters, the PKK demanded changes such as the right to education in the Kurdish language, changes to the electoral system and a degree of regional autonomy.

The PKK has been fighting for self-rule in the mainly Kurdish southeast and east of Turkey since 1984.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Netanyahu: Bad Deal Worse Than No Deal With Iran
[AnNahar] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday "a bad deal is worse than no deal" with Iran over its disputed nuclear program, ahead of crunch talks between Tehran and world powers.

In excerpts of an interview with the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published in advance, he called for sanctions on the Tehran regime to be stepped up rather than eased.

"A bad deal is worse than no deal," the prime minister was quoted as saying.

Iran "will ask for a partial lifting of sanctions for cosmetic concessions that would leave them with the ability to have a nuclear weapons capability," Netanyahu was quoted as saying.

He cautioned that Iran was far more dangerous than nuclear-armed North Korea and bent on spreading terror in the world.

"You demand enrichment if you want to build nuclear weapons," he stressed.

Global powers accuse Iran of seeking to obtain a nuclear bomb under the guise of what Tehran insists is its civilian atomic energy program.

But recent U.S.-Iranian talks have raised hopes of progress in Geneva on October 15-16 when Iran meets the United States, Russia, China, Britannia, La Belle France and Germany.

In a separate interview with rolling news channel La Belle France24, Netanyahu urged La Belle France to be tough on Iran "with or without Rouhani's smiles."

"If they really wanted to dismantle their nuclear weapons program, they'd come out with it," he charged.

Rouhani has come out strongly in favor of a quick deal after negotiations over the nuclear program practically stalled for eight years.

Iraq
Iraq Violence Kills 20 people
[An Nahar] Violence in Iraq killed 20 people on Thursday, among them four anti-al-Qaeda gunnies rubbed out by gunnies and eight gunnies killed by security forces, officials said.

In Samarra, north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, gunnies killed two Sahwa anti-al-Qaeda gunnies in an attack on a checkpoint, while two more died in a similar attack near Baquba, also north of the capital.

The Sahwa, who joined forces with the United States from late 2006 and helped bring about a sharp reduction in violence in Iraq, are frequently targeted by Sunni bully boys, who consider them to be traitors.

Northeast of Baquba, a roadside kaboom killed two police and maimed a third when it went kaboom! near their patrol in the town of Muqdadiyah, which has been hit by frequent bombings and shootings this year.

In Storied Baghdad itself, bombings killed three people and maimed 11, while the owner of a tire shop was bumped off.

Police also found the corpse of a man with signs of torture and gunshot wounds. He was believed to have been killed on Thursday.

In the northern province of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
gunnies shot one person dead, while security forces killed eight gunnies in a multi-province operation that army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir al-Zaidi said resulted in the arrest of more than 60 people and the seizure of weapons.

Iraqi security forces have carried out wide-ranging operations targeting gunnies for more than two months, but have yet to curb the surge in violence plaguing the country.

Saudi Advisory Body Rejects Bid to Raise Women Driving Ban
[An Nahar] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's appointed advisory body on Thursday rejected a move by three female members to put the ultra-conservative kingdom's unique ban on women driving up for discussion, state media reported.
Just looking out for the ladies' ovaries...
Its decision came even as activists hailed increasing reports of women getting behind the wheel in defiance of the ban ahead of a nationwide protest they are planning for later this month.

The Shura Consultative Council, which counts 30 women among its 150 members, rejected a move by one female member to raise the issue during a discussion on Thursday of transport ministry matters, the official SPA news agency reported.

It said the issue was "irrelevant" to the discussions and "not within the transport ministry's remit."

On Tuesday, three female council members filed a recommendation that the ban be lifted, one of the three, Latifa al-Shaalan, said.

Their recommendation urged the council to "recognize the right of women to drive a car in accordance with the principles of sharia (Islamic law) and traffic rules."

Kerry Denounces Kidnapping of Libyan PM as 'Thuggery'
[An Nahar] U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
on Thursday denounced the kidnapping of Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan and pledged the United States would continue to work with Libya to shore up its security.

"Libyans did not risk their lives in their 2011 revolution to tolerate a return to thuggery," Kerry said in a statement, also welcoming Zeidan's release after he was held by gunnies for several hours.

Meanwhile,
...back at the hoedown, the fiddler suddenly struck a sour note. The dancing stopped abruptly. Everyone looked at Bob...
David Cameron

Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
gave Britannia's backing to the Libyan PM, pledging to help overcome the country's "security challenges".

A front man for the British prime minister said he had spoken by phone to Ali Zeidan, who was "calm and very measured" despite being seized by gunnies in Tripoli

for several hours on Thursday.

"They talked about how the UK would continue to support the Libyan government and the Libyan people during this challenging transition, including support in helping them overcome the security challenges that they face," said the front man.

The pre-dawn seizure of Zeidan from Tripoli's Corinthia hotel came five days after U.S. commandos embarrassed and angered the government by capturing senior al-Qaeda suspect Abu Anas al-Libi off the streets of Tripoli and whisking him away to a warship in the Mediterranean.

#5  The SCT tax ruling had to do with the individual mandate -- which in a way was struck down. Majority held that Congress had no authority to make people buy anything. This is significant in its own way -- from 1937 to 1994 not one law was held unconstitutional for lack of Congressional authority.

Roberts said Congress could tax you which left the penalty in place. So they can't make you buy, but they can punish you for not buying -- and what is a tax if not a punishment?

Other parts of ObamaCare will almost certainly be struck down -- I'm thinking of provisions which limit religious freedom. Will the SCT throw out the entire law on that basis (and lack of severability)? Hard to say, but I would love to see it.

In the meantime, my personal favorite legislative attack is to permanently reduce the "tax" portion -- the penalty -- to $1. That makes it optional, which makes it a dead letter. All the House GOP need say is that they are cutting taxes.

Republicans Offer 6-Week Debt Extension
[An Nahar] U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John It is not pronounced 'Boner!' Boehner
... the occasionally weepy leader of House Republicans...
said Republicans would vote to extend the government's ability to borrow money for six weeks, averting a default for now -- but only if President Barack Obama
Jedi mind meld...
first agrees to fresh negotiations on spending cuts. Under the Republican plan, the separate partial government shutdown would continue.

White House front man Jay Carney said Obama "would likely sign" a bill with no conditions attached increasing the debt cap. He said the president also wants Republicans to reopen the government. But he did not rule out Obama agreeing to the debt ceiling proposal if the government remains closed.

Boehner produced the proposal as the partial shutdown entered its 10th day. Separately and more ominously, the administration has warned that unless the federal debt ceiling is raised, the government will deplete its ability to borrow money by next Thursday, an event officials have warned could trigger an unprecedented U.S. financial default that could wound the world economy as well as America's.

"I would hope the president would look at this as an opportunity and a good faith effort on our part to move halfway, halfway to what he's demanded, in order to have these conversations begin," Boehner told news hounds after presenting the plan to rank-and-file Republican politicians.

Carney said the White House has yet to see a specific proposal from House Republicans. Boehner and other members of his caucus are scheduled to meet with the president at the White House Thursday afternoon.

#2  Is it blinking first or offereing up deals that they know Obama won't take and that will make Obama look worse.

The more the GOP can position themselves as the ones willing to negotiate against Obama's "won't talk" attitude the better. Also the longer it drags out the worse the Obamacare implementation looks and the more reasonable the one year delay the GOP proposed seems to the average person.

I think the Republicans have the better hand in the long run.

#4  I'm thinking this was a clever move. Champ wants to cloud the issue by talking debt cap. House takes debt cap off the table. ObamaCare is a winner. Default is a loser (even if it's not in question, the Dems are making that the issue). So we stay on message on ObamaCare. Works for me.

Believe me, I'm the first to suspect that the House GOP Leadership is even now crafting clever new ways to roll over. I just don't think this is their move.

[Ynet] Syrian air raids on rebel positions in the northern Aleppo and southern Daraa provinces killed 30 people on Thursday, including civilians, a monitoring group said.

The raids by planes and helicopters on Syria's onetime commercial hub of Aleppo on Thursday killed 16 people, including a woman and two children in the village of Sfire to the east of the city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The village is controlled by Islamist groups, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Kerry: Military Suspension Not A Withdrawal of U.S.-Egyptian Friendship
[An Nahar] Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
said Thursday that Washington's suspension of military hardware deliveries to Egypt could be lifted based on the behavior of the country's rulers.

Kerry said the deliveries could resume if Cairo makes headway toward restoring civilian rule.

"So this would be on the basis of performance," he said during a visit to Malaysia.

"By no means is this a withdrawal from our relationship or a severing of our serious commitment to helping the government" transition to democracy, Kerry told news hounds in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Washington on Wednesday stopped shipments of some large-scale military systems as well as halting $260 million in cash aid to Egyptian military leaders, who ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
in July.

The step was aimed at signalling Washington's displeasure with the military rulers over a deadly crackdown against protesters and Islamists.

Egypt has criticized the U.S. decision as "flawed" and said it would not bow to American pressure.

The decision, which marks a dramatic break with years of unqualified support to Cairo, will prevent deliveries of big-ticket items including Apache helicopters, F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 Abrams tank parts and Harpoon missiles, U.S. officials told news hounds.

Libya PM 'Freed' after Several Hours Held by Militia, Calls for Calm
[An Nahar] Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was freed Thursday after being held by gunnies for several hours, in the latest sign of the country's lawlessness since Muammar Qadaffy

The premier appeared in good health when he arrived at government headquarters after his ordeal at the hands of former rebel militiamen, waving to waiting well-wishers as he climbed out of an armored car.

"I hope this problem will be resolved with reason and wisdom" and without any "escalation," Zeidan said later in comments broadcast by state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?

The pre-dawn seizure of Zeidan came five days after U.S. commandos embarrassed and angered Libya's government by capturing senior al-Qaeda suspect Abu Anas al-Libi off the streets of Tripoli

"He has been sprung but we have no details so far on the circumstances of his release," Abdelaziz told Agence La Belle France Presse.

TTP denies Fazlullah killed in clash with Afghan Taliban
[Dawn] The Pak Taliban have denied that the leader of their Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
faction was killed in a clash with the Afghan Taliban earlier this week, says a report published Thursday.

According to the report by the BBC, at least three Swat Taliban capos were killed during the clash in the northeastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
of Afghanistan two days earlier.

The report said some sources also alleged that Swat Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah
...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...
, who is blamed by Pakistain for mounting attacks against the Army from across the border, was killed in the attack.

The Pak Taliban, however, denied this claim.

Eye-witnesses claim that two days earlier, dozens of heavily armed Afghan Taliban attacked Pak bad boy bases in Ghaziabad located in the Kunar province of Afghanistan adjacent to the Pak-Afghan border. Subsequently, three TTP commanders were killed in the attack.

The dear departed Talibans were said to belong to the Swat faction of the proscribed Tehrik-e-Taliban organization.

Taliban sources confirmed that a clash occurred between the two armed bad boy groups, but said no Swat Taliban capo or fighter had been killed. The sources moreover strongly denied
No, no! Certainly not!
that Fazlullah was injured or killed in the clash.

Earlier, the Swat chapter of the TTP group released a video claiming responsibility for the killing on Sept 15 of a major general, a lieutenant colonel and an army soldier. The two officers and the soldier bit the dust when their vehicle was struck by an improvised bomb (IED) in Upper Dir. The video moreover showed Fazlullah rejoicing over their success in carrying out the attack

Mullah Fazlullah, 39, had unleashed a reign of terror in Swat before he lost control of the area following a military operation. He fled to Afghanistan and is believed to operate primarily from that country's Kunar and Nuristan provinces, from where his men attack Pak forces.

Iraq has annouced that it executed 42 terrorism convicts this week, rejecting mounting international appeals to end its extensive use of the death penalty.

The Iraqi Justice Ministry announced the executions Thursday on its website below a photograph of an executioner's noose against a black background. It mentioned that among those executed "for mass killings and other acts of terrorism" was one woman. It also said all of the dead were convicted of terrorism-related crimes.

The ministry statement did not specify the dates of the executions, but the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said they took place Tuesday and Wednesday.

Morocco King Names New Govt Ending 3-Month Drift
[An Nahar] Morocco's King Mohammed VI appointed a new Islamist-led government on Thursday ending a months-long crisis triggered by the defection of a key coalition partner, a minister told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The king "has just appointed the new government" at a ceremony at the palace in Rabat, said Justice Minister Mustafa Ramid, a member of the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party whose leader, Abdelila Benkirane, remains prime minister.

The cabinet shake-up sees Saad-Eddine El Othmani replaced as foreign minister by Salaheddine Mezouar, who heads the National Rally of Independents and whose agreement to join the government effectively prevented it from collapsing.

Six women also take cabinet posts, four of them from the RNI, compared with just one in the previous administration.

Also, a new education minister has been appointed after the king strongly criticized the outgoing government's education policy in a speech in August.

Benkirane's party has headed the government since triumphing in 2011 elections that followed the Arab Spring protests sweeping Morocco's main cities earlier that year.

But the coalition was threatened when the nationalist Istiqlal Party withdrew five of its ministers in July, accusing the PJD of failing to shore up the economy and solve pressing social problems.

The Islamist premier managed to avert fresh elections by persuading the RNI, a party that opposed the government program adopted last year, to join the coalition.

Taliban warn shops against selling Malala's book
[Dawn] The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain has warned that those found selling "I am Malala" -- the book authored by Malala Yousufzai -- will face serious action as she had not performed any act of bravery but swapped her religion Islam with secularism for which she is being rewarded.

Talking to this correspondent on phone on Thursday, TTP front man Shahidullah Shahid said they knew that Malala would get awards from the enemies of Islam.

"Malala abandoned Islam for secularism for which she is being given awards," he said, adding that the media and the international community should keep in mind that students of Jamia Hafsa, Islamabad, were never given any award despite their immense bravery.

"The Taliban will not lose an opportunity to kill Malala Yousufzai and those who were found selling her book will be targeted."

One more held over Ctg blast
[Bangla Daily Star] Police jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
another person yesterday for his suspected link with the blast at Jamaatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, run by Hefajat leader Mufti Izharul Islam, in the city's Lalkhan Bazar on Monday.

Acting on a tip off, police intercepted a Dhaka-bound bus at the City Gate around 7:00am and rounded up Shakhawat alias Salauddin, aged about 22, said AFM Nizam Uddin, additional superintendent of Hathazari police.

The arrestee had several injury marks on his body, which police suspected were sustained during the blast.

The youth claimed himself to be a student of Mekhal Madrasa in Hathazari, but police after primary investigation found that the information was wrong, added Nizam.

Law enforcers have so far arrested 11 people in connection with the blast at the madrasa that left two students dead and several injured.

Three cases have been filed in this regard.

South Korea Charges 100 With Corruption Over Nuclear Scandal
[Ynet] South Korea has indicted 100 people, including a top former state utility official, of corruption in a scandal over fake safety certifications for parts in nuclear reactors, authorities said Thursday.

The country has faced a series of shutdowns of nuclear reactors due to fake documents going back to 2012. Of its 23 reactors, six remain offline, including three halted in May to replace cables supplied with bogus certificates. "We hope so-called nuclear mafia style behavior would be rooted out if strict investigations and law enforcement and system reforms continue," Kim Dong-yeon, a government policy coordinator, said.

Lawyers go berserk, lock up judges
[Dawn] The lawyers' body of the federal capital on Wednesday confined several judges to the district court and locked the doors of 40 courts for an indefinite period.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the judges were gotten released later in the evening.

The incident occurred when Civil Judge Umer Shabbir showed reluctance in issuing a contempt of court notice to the chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for demolishing lawyers' chambers being constructed on a football ground in F-8.

The lawyers had started constructing the chambers last month which did not go down well with the residents of the area who registered their protest at various forums.

It may be mentioned here that in September, some lawyers razed the security walls of the district courts and built new chambers instead.

They also constructed chambers on footpaths, litigants' sitting area and all other open areas available in front of the courtrooms.

Therefore, a meeting between lawyers' representatives, district court judges and IHC Chief Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi was held. It was agreed that the chambers constructed in front of courtrooms would be demolished.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
according to Chaudhry Haseeb, the secretary general of IHC bar association, the lawyers did not want chambers on the football ground to be razed. Therefore, they obtained a stay order on Friday.

"We then started demolishing the illegally-constructed chambers in front of the district courts. However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
on Tuesday night, the CDA razed a few chambers on the football ground," Mr Haseeb said.

On Wednesday, some 500 lawyers approached Civil Judge Umer Shabbir and asked him to issue a contempt of court notice to the CDA chairman for demolishing the chambers despite the stay order. Instead, Mr Shabbir left the courtroom and went to his chamber.

This infuriated the lawyers who raised slogans against the judges and locked many in the courtroom.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the acting district and sessions judge Wajid Ali called the IHC registrar office and informed him about the incident.

He said the lawyers were "not only threatening the learned judges but also chanting slogans against the district judiciary."

The acting IHC chief justice, Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, then constituted a team asking it to visit the district court and submit a report.

IDF Holds Flight Exercise Ahead Of Iran Talks
[Ynet] IAF holds drill to examine abilities to reach remote destinations. 'When we say all options are on the table, we're talking about military options as well,' IDF website says, noting drill was to prepare troops to any possible threat

The Air Force had a widespread drill this week utilizing several squadrons, in order to test the force's ability to reach remote destination during lengthy flights.

In one of the highlights of the drill, where the Air Force cooperated with a foreign army, fighter jets were fueled midair.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held several interviews with European media outlets, warning against Iranian fraud in the nuclear talks with the West, which are to be held next week in Geneva.

The IDF website defined the mid-air fueling as "testing the abilities to fly long distances. When we say, 'all options are on the table', we're talking about military options as well. The Air Force, the longest reaching arm of the IDF, is responsible for realizing that option if it is so required. In the force, we're enforcing a range of abilities, including long-term flights. In this field the Air Force is required to develop all relevant ability, from a pinpointed activity to a wide-range action."

Almost all of the F-15 and F-16 squadrons of the IAF participated in the drill, and training similar to it is held several times a year.

The IDF said the training, which is expected to go on until next week, is no different from drills that took place in recent years, practicing operational planning, flight, fueling and radio control.

The commander of one of the squadrons thatho took part in the drill said: "Challenges in a flight like this start in the planning phase, and continue in the flight itself which is far from home, in unfamiliar weather and terrain conditions, as well as all possible threats."

The Air Force stressed that "The training sharpened the ability and connected the whole of the components and squadrons to the unique and complex training. In the personal aspect pilots talk about a lengthy flight requiring special physical training and preparations."

Iran Moving Nuclear Center To Hoodwink World
[AnNahar] An exiled opposition group claimed Thursday that Iran has transferred a research center leading its alleged attempt to develop nuclear weapons to a new location in order to hoodwink the world.

"In order to hide its nuclear activities, the Iranian regime is currently in the process of a vast operation moving the center responsible for research and planning of the military nuclear project," Mehdi Abrishamachi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran told a presser in Gay Paree.

According to the opposition group, which has made significant revelations about Iran's nuclear program in the past, the bulk of the center's activities have been moved from a defense ministry property in the east of Tehran to a new site around three kilometers (two miles) away.

Those activities left at the first site could all be regarded as of dual-use -- related to either civil or military uses of nuclear technology -- enabling the regime to disguise their military nature in the event of inspection, according to the NCRI.

"The transfer started at the beginning of September and is not finished but the essential has been done," Abrishamachi said.

The NCRI said it had submitted its information, including a list of 100 alleged employees of the center, to the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency on Wednesday.

Iran denies seeking to develop a nuclear weapons capacity and has said it wants to sign a nuclear proliferation accord with the West. Negotiations on the subject between Tehran, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany, are due to resume next week in Geneva.

The talks will be the first since the election in June of new Iran's diminutive President Hassan Rouhani.

Bangladesh
Shibir men attack Hindu festival
[Bangla Daily Star] When the Hindu community started celebrating their biggest religious festival, Durga Puja, across the country yesterday, the Hindus at Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga witnessed vandalism at one of their places of worship.

Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir
... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh...
attacked a puja mandap in Darshana bus stand area in the upazila, breaking the electric lights around it and vandalising a platform designated for guests.

A Shibir activist was killed when police fired on the marauding activists to drive them away from the Carew Sarbajanin Puja Mandap and stop them from attacking police.

The dear departed, Rafiqul Islam, 23, is a student of Badarganj Baqi Billah Madrasa of Boalia village in the upazila.

The pro-Jamaat organization yesterday staged nationwide protests, demanding release of their leaders, including Shibir president Delwar Hossain, and resorted to vandalism in different parts of the country.

Around 100 Shibir activists brought out a procession at Darshana town at about 3:45pm as part of their pre-scheduled programmes and gathered near the bus stand after marching different streets, police and witnesses said.

On information, a team from Damurhuda Police Station led by officer-in-charge Ahsan Habib rushed to the scene and asked them to leave.

"The Shibir men left the spot and took position at Haltchadpur near the puja mandap, vandalised the lights and the platform partially," Abdur Rahim Shah Chowdhury, district superintendent of police, told The Daily Star.

Police fired tear gas shells but failed to disperse the protesters, who were throwing brick chips at police. Then they fired 15 rounds of bullets, one of which hit Rafiqul. Around 10 other Shibir activists were maimed in the incident, said police.

The SP, who was on the spot, said the Shibir men had wanted to instigate communal violence by attacking the place of worship, adding, "We have brought the situation under control."

Contacted, Ajoy Kumar, president of the puja mandap, confirmed the incident, saying police had not let the activists approach the mandap after driving them away.

Additional members of police and Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed in different areas of Darshana since last evening.

The SP said police were preparing to launch a drive to arrest the attackers.

Shibir leaders in Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga and Jhenidah called a hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
in the districts for Sunday from 6:00am to 2:00pm in protest at the killing.

BNP will stop war crimes trial if voted to power
[Bangla Daily Star] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
yesterday sought vote for the Awami League in the next election and cautioned the countrymen about the return to power of BNP-Jamaat "who want to lead the country towards destruction."

"If the BNP-Jamaat returns to power they will stop the trial of the war criminals. They also don't want the victory that we've gained under the leadership of our father of the nation," she said at a mammoth public rally at Islampur Health Institute Ground in Islampur upazila in the afternoon.

Hasina said: "The BNP-Jamaat does not understand anything except for killing, looting, corruption, bombing, grenade attack, killing police, and violating mothers and sisters.

"They always obstruct the country's development as they want the destruction of the country."

In a scathing attack on the opposition leader's "relentless falsehood", Hasina alleged that before the general election in 1996, Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
used to say there would be no "azan" in the mosques if the Awami League was voted to power.

"But that proved false.

"I seek vote for the Awami League....we've initiated the trial of the war criminals and the trial will continue and Insha-Allah, we'll complete the trial. Otherwise, they [BNP-Jamaat] will stop the trial," she said, urging the audience to pledge to vote for her party.

It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
on Wednesday voiced reservations about the de-weaponisation campaign in Lower Dir district, which, they said, caused unrest in the area.

Speaking on a point of order, MPA Muzaffar Said told the house that police backed by other law-enforcement agencies had launched the de-weaponisation campaign in Lower Dir.

According to the deputy inspector general of police in Malakand division, the campaign will continue until Oct 15.

He said police began a house-to-house search operation and raided residential compounds, which had created disturbance.

The MPA said the army had already conducted the de-weaponisation campaign in the area and the local people had voluntarily handed over heavy weapons and ammunition to it.

He said the residents of Lower Dir had no sympathies with the myrmidons and local jirga had supported the government's action against anti-social elements.

Mr Muzaffar said the people supported targeted operation against troublemakers and as a result, the area was comparatively peaceful in entire Malakand division.

He said the local residents had retained light weapons like pistols and shotguns for self protection but now, police were recovering light weapons from villagers, which had sparked resentment among them.

MPA Mohammad Ali of JI from Upper Dir district also supported his colleague and said the local qaumi jirga was very active, which had played a major role in the maintenance of law and order situation in the area.

He proposed that the law-enforcement agencies suspend operation and make consultation with local parliamentarians and elders on future course of action.

Minister for Zakat and Religious Affairs Habibur Rehman said the government would look into the matter and produce the report about the Lower Dir de-weaponisation campaign in the house by Friday next.

Liu Hu, a reporter with the Guangzhou-based newspaper New Express, was arrested on a charge of defamation on Sept. 30, said his lawyer, Zhou Ze. Liu had been detained in late August in the southwestern metropolis of Chongqing on suspicion of "fabricating and spreading rumors."

Study: Radical Climate Change Just around the Corner
[An Nahar] Earth may experience a radically different climate already within 34 years, forever changing life as we know it, said a study Wednesday that aims to bring the dangers of global warming into sharper focus.
"We calculate a probability at the 99% confidence interval of between 0 and 1," concluded the study authors.
On current trends of greenhouse-gas emissions, 2047 will mark the year at which the climate at most places on Earth will shift beyond documented extremes, it said.
Or not, as the case may be. It depends if one believes the 73 IPCC models or the actual data, donchaknow.
This date is pushed back to 2069 under a scenario in which fossil-fuel burning emissions are stabilized, said an analysis of climate projections published in the journal Nature.
Anyone remember GIGO (garbage in, garbage out)?
"The results shocked us," lead author Camilo Mora of the University of Hawaii's geography department said of the findings.

"Within my generation, whatever climate we are used to will be a thing of the past."
In fact, everything we are or are not currently used to will then be things of the past, because we humans are capable of moving only one direction in time.
Most climate studies predict average, global shifts by a randomly-chosen cutoff date like 2100.
Yes. Yes, they do. Odd, that, given the data and all..
The new study took a different tack by distinguishing between different areas of the world, and seeking to identify the year in which climate change will cross the threshold where weather events once viewed as extreme become the norm.
Remember the fate of Cassandra and beware. Nobody loves a true prophet, but everyone hates a false one.
It looked at effects such as air and sea-surface temperature, rainfall and ocean acidity.
What about thunderstorm formation ringing warm surface temperatures high into the atmosphere to be radiated out into space? Sunspot activity? Deep ocean currents? Increased plant growth in response to higher carbon dioxide levels?
"Regardless of the scenario, changes will be coming soon," said Mora -- forcing species to adapt, move or die out.
Yep. Even in these modern times evolution continues to occur.

I've had 30+ years in the software business and have created many models and analysed many more.

GIGO is the flaw in most all of them. People don't realize how simple the concept of a model is. Anyone who has ever created a spreadsheet has created a model.

Enter wanky data and you can get pretty much any result you want. (you should have seen my retirement fund when I got optimistic)

#5  1. Global warming is occurring. (So is Climate Change.)
2. It has been going on with only small interruptions for the past 10,000 years.
3. Some component is due to CO2 production. Also methane release. Amount uncertain.
4. Many other factors are also in play - both man-influenced and not.
5. Some of those other man-influenced factors counteract the warming effect. Amount uncertain.
6. The science is not even close to 'settled.'
7. If burnable carbon can be burned it will be, by someone, fairly soon. No Treaty will change that.
8. The 'powerful ones' are fully aware of point 7, so the intentions are not to modify climate but to redistribute wealth, from US/EU to everyone else, and from suckers to connected individuals.

#7  Where are the error bars? They show two different emission scenarios, but no estimate of the systematic error in the model.

The numbers are probably OK, provided they are given appropriate error estimates. Given the near-term climate history (Ice Ages), I'd go with +-100KY.

#8  GIGO is a best case.

Recursively using outputs as inputs (for t+1) EXPONENTIALLY RAISES the ERROR.

if the error in the model or reading is 5%
after 10 (days) there's 41% error.

#9  BP, you are so right, BUT, we can't make the assumption that the original garbage was an error.

I presume that they knew what would happen to the result (or close enough) depending on the selected input and selected accordingly.

Good question, OCCD.

I've got another question along those lines:

Since we didn't know about the "hole in the ozone layer" until we put up satellites, how to we know it's hasn't been around for centuries (or millinnia)?

Anyway, I'm sure you're right - duct tape can fix anything. ;-p
Posted by: Barbara || 10/11/2013 17:37 Comments || Top||

#13  The problem with the model could be GIGO. The problem could also be that there are several factors that are not included in the model that are actually very critical to the real climate. This could because scientists aren't aware of their importance, or they don't have the data for those variables. The worst case would be that they know about the variables, and their values, but when they add the information to the models, it doesn't give the results they want.

Yemen Intelligence Officer Killed in Flashpoint City
[AnNahar] Gunmen rubbed out a Yemeni intelligence officer Thursday in Mukalla, a scenic provincial capital where al-Qaeda-linked gunnies briefly seized an army headquarters and took hostages last week, a security source said.

Men on cycle of violences fired seven times at Colonel Abdullah al-Tamimi in the Fuah district, killing him on the spot, before fleeing the scene, the source said.

Mukalla is the capital of the southeastern province of Hadramawt and is a major port city.

On September 30, gunnies from the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Tunisia and Yemen, with the Tunisian version currently most active...
group seized an army headquarters there after a jacket wallah rammed a car into the entrance.

The army soon retook most of the building, except for the top floor, where the gunnies held the soldiers captive.

Days later, troops assaulted the top floor in an operation in which the government said all the gunnies and an unspecified number of hostages died.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has intensified its attacks on security forces in Yemen, mainly in its lawless southern and eastern provinces, where jihadist groups are active.

The Islamist network has taken advantage of the weakening of the central government since a popular uprising that toppled president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
in 2011.

Washington regards AQAP as the global jihadist network's most dangerous affiliate and has stepped up drone strikes targeting the bully boys.

Talking to members of families affected by the recent Qisa Khwani Bazaar bomb kaboom and later in his talk with news hounds at the Governor House on Thursday, he said the proposed law, which would effectively tackle cases of terrorism in the court of law, was ready. The culprits involved in terrorism would not escape the clutches of law, he added.

Mr Sharif said the proposed law would remove lacunas from existing laws, which helped the accused get bail because of lack of evidence or a weak case prepared by the prosecution.

He said in a country where security measures were weak extraordinary laws and decisions had to be taken to put things on the right track. The government would not show any weakness in elimination of terrorism and would go the distance to curb this menace once and for all, he added.

The second landmine went kaboom! in Boshehra village, injuring Zareef Khan, a tractor driver.

His tractor trolley was passing near Naeem tube-well when it hit the landmine. As result Zareef Khan suffered injuries while tractor trolley was destroyed. He was shifted to Sadda hospital.

Warrant Out for Dissident Syrian Colonel over Terror Plots
[An Nahar] The military examining magistrate issued on Thursday an arrest warrant against a dissident Syrian colonel for forming an armed gang to carry out terrorist activities.

The warrant was issued after Judge Fadi Sawan interrogated the suspect identified as Ahmed Amer, a Syrian Army colonel who has defected.

He referred him to the military prosecution to take the appropriate action.

On Wednesday, the State Commissioner to the Military Court, Judge Saqr Saqr, charged 12 people, including a Lebanese and 2 Syrians who are in jug, with plotting terrorist activities and planning liquidations.

The three suspects were nabbed
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
by the General Security Department.

But LBCI TV said Amer is not linked with the 12-member network.

He was seeking to recruit fighters to send them to Syria, it said.

Egypt: Suicide Bombing Kills 3 Troops, 1 Policeman
[Ynet] Egyptian officials say a jacket wallah has rammed his explosives-laden car into a checkpoint outside a coastal city in volatile Sinai Peninsula, killing three soldiers and a policeman.

The security officials say the attack happened on Thursday outside the city of al-Arish. They say the bomber slowly approached the checkpoint, waited for soldiers and coppers to start searching the car before he blew himself and his vehicle up. Five other people were maimed.

Activists protest against desecration of Hindu grave in Sindh
[Dawn] Rights group staged a protest outside the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Press Club on Thursday against a recent incident in Pangrio, Badin, where the body of a young Hindu man was taken out of the grave by some 'religious bad boys.'

According to recent reports in the media, Bhooro, 28, a lower caste Hindu, was buried in Haji Faqir graveyard in Pangrio Badin district, after he died in a traffic accident.

Pangrio's Haji Faqir graveyard has had a long tradition of burying Hindus belonging to the Bheel community. Bheels are among the few in the Hindu community who don't cremate their dead.

What followed was a statement from a holy man announcing on a mosque's loudspeaker that it is "against the teachings Islam" to allow a Hindu to be buried beside a Mohammedan.
What followed was a statement from a holy man announcing on a mosque's loudspeaker that it is "against the teachings Islam" to allow a Hindu to be buried beside a Mohammedan.

Eventually, a few people, who are said to have links with a political party in the area, dug out the body from the grave and left it across the road. The body remained on the road for about eight hours until the locals erupted into the streets pushing the area police to take action against the men.

Speaking to Dawn.com, an official from Pakistain Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler), Shujauddin Qureshi said that "the incident is worrisome for the people of Sindh, where such incidents were never heard of before." He also added that the incident is based on a "political grievance" against the Bheel community in particular for voting for a rival party in the recently held general elections.

"A local newspaper quoted a grave digger as saying that there are 5-6 graves of lower caste Hindus in the graveyard. Not surprisingly, he backed off after stating that, after some people flared up the issue on that point alone," he adds.

An FIR was registered, but protestors at the KPC said that the holy man who "encouraged" the men has not been included in it, yet.

The incident which occurred on October 6 created uproar on social networking websites where many people denounced the act.

A rights group activist, Sheerin Aijaz, who was a part of the protest, said that the culprits need to be tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
. "We have to set a precedent. If nothing else, the sitting ministers should at least denounce the incident, even if they have shown time and again that they are complacent when faced with such issues."

OPEC production falls
OPEC's crude oil production fell below 30-million barrels a day in September. That's the first time that's happened in more than two years.

There are two main reasons for the drop in OPEC production. John Kingston of Platts says one is a temporary problem, while the other is ongoing and may be more troublesome.

Hancock described the situation as similar to what happens when hackers conduct a distributed denial of service, or DDOS, attack on a website: they get large numbers of computers to simultaneously request information from the server that runs a website, overwhelming it and causing it to crash or otherwise stumble. "The site basically DDOS'd itself," he said.

#9  Load Testing is a very common and critical part of any system development in the major corporate sector. There are numerous load testing software programs that simulate large numbers of hits on a server. It is part of the standard software quality assurance testing process.

Someone mentioned a day or so ago that it looks like the site was ancnot tested. That is obvious. And was once very common back in the day when IBM main frame legacy software was being recoded for Windows NT servers. Corporations that excelled in thier line of business (financial giants, automotive giants, etc.) that now had any third party doing the transition got burned but they brought in consultants to set up test environments that emulated the real world and did not roll the system out into production without extensive testing.

When and if the Hussein regime ever realizes the above, it will take 9 months to a year from that point of enlightenment for the mess to be properly redeveloped, tested, put into Beta, then fully rolled out.

Basically rocket science has defined goals and rules. Physics and math may be a bitch but they are what they are.

Large scale corporate and gov't systems have neither and are, especially gov't systems subject to "scope creep". I would bet all $600 mill that there never was a defined and frozen specification for this beast AND there never will be. OBTW it don't matter to the developers/consultants/ 3rd parties, as long as the checks keep clearing.

Of course the real agenda is a total failure that can be used to sell us into a single payer system. I think they may have miscalculated the timing of the failure. The insurance industry and healthcare industry have not been sufficiently crippled yet to force the switch.

Bingo. More broadly, socialism concerns itself only with dividing up existing wealth, not creating new wealth. But that never occurs to them, so they don't realize that *on the brink of insolvency* is the worst possible time to impose socialism. QE/ZIRP can't hide the rot for much longer. Actually, after my post, I thought I should have included a clause to the effect that "provided there is a high level specification that isn't full of design flaws". Imagine a software specification created by the likes of Hillary Clinton.

#20  Health Care Website Fails Despite Amish Beta Success

The failure of the new ObamaCare health insurance exchange website came as “a bolt from the blue” to the IT staff in the Obama administration, especially because the system had been thoroughly beta-tested for nearly a year among the Amish community in rural Lancaster, Pennsylvania. HealthCare.gov servers buckled under traffic five times greater than the maximum anticipated volume.

“We were firing on all cylinders during the prototype stage,” said an unnamed IT staffer at HealthCare.gov. “Page-load times were measured in minutes rather than the current hours, and that was after heavy local TV promotion soliciting Amish beta customers.”

The crew that coded Amish.HealthCare.gov said the telephone hotline was “practically silent” turning the trial period, meaning that virtually no problems were reported with the system.

“We thought we were, as NASA says, ‘Go at throttle up.’” the source said. “The fact that people now report they can’t login after dozens of attempts for almost a week is a real mystery to us.”

A White House spokesman said the president is “focused like a laser” on solving the problem.

“We just posted an invitation to our Amish beta-tester forum,” said Press Secretary Jay Carney, “We’re asking for volunteers to fly from Lancaster down to D.C. later today to do a focus group so we can get to the bottom of this.”

Beta testing is not load testing. A load test was initiated over a network used by a major bank headquarters once and the test shut down the entire bank network. The bank network engineer came racing into the development room demanding that "whatever you guys are doing, please stop!!"

The load test software was running on the network, then out across the internet targeting a server farm on the other side of the US that was to handle high volumes of credit card transactions.

THAT is a load test.

And in followup:

Bill Gates suddenly dies and finds himself face to face with God. God stood over Bill Gates and said, "Well Bill, I'm really confused on this one. It's a tough decision; I'm not sure whether to send you to Heaven or Hell. After all, you helped society enormously by putting a computer in almost every home in America, yet you also created that ghastly Windows '95 among other indiscretions. I believe I'll do something I've never done before; I'll let you decide where you want to go." Bill pushed up his glasses, looked up at God and replied, "Could you briefly explain the difference between the two?" Looking slightly puzzled, God said, "Better yet, why don't I let you visit both places briefly, then you can make your decision. Which do you choose to see first, Heaven or Hell?" Bill played with his pocket protector for a moment, then looked back at God and said, "I think I'll try Hell first." So, with a flash of lightning and a cloud of smoke, Bill Gates went to Hell. When he materialized in Hell, Bill looked around. It was a beautiful and clean place, a bit warm, with sandy beaches and tall mountains, clear skies, pristine water, and beautiful women frolicking about. A smile came across Bill's face as he took in a deep breath of the clean air. "This is great," he thought, "if this is Hell, I can't wait to see heaven." Within seconds of his thought, another flash of lightning and a cloud of smoke appeared, and Bill was off to Heaven. Heaven was a place high above the clouds, where angels were drifting about playing their harps and singing in a beautiful chorus. It was a very nice place, Bill thought, but not as enticing as Hell. Bill looked up, cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled for God and Bill Gates was sent to Hell for eternity. Time passed, and God decided to check on the late billionaire to see how he was progressing in Hell. When he got there, he found Bill Gates shackled to a wall in a dark cave amid bone thin men and tongues of fire, being burned and tortured by demons. "So, how is everything going?" God asked. Bill responded with a crackling voice filled with anguish and disappointment, "This is awful! It's nothing like the Hell I visited the first time!! I can't believe this is happening! What happened to the other place....with the beaches and the mountains and the beautiful women? "That was the demo," replied God.

The Hipsters made the demo for selling the Administration. They outsourced the actual administration of the health plan to India.

Nawaz says 'sincere' on Pakistani Taliban talks
[Dawn] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
Thursday said his government was sincere about holding peace talks with the Pak Taliban, after rebel chief Hakimullah Mehsud complained no serious steps had been taken to open a dialogue.

Speaking after a security meeting in the troubled northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, Sharif said progress was being made on the issue of opening negotiations.

The premier was accompanied by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Information Minister Pervez Rashid and his Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on the occasion.

Bomb attacks have also hit all four lovely provincial capitals and Bannu district in Pakistain killing ten, wounding more than 60 on Thursday.

His statement came a day after the broadcast of a BBC interview in which Mehsud said he was ready to sit down for talks but the government had "not taken any serious steps."

Alleging the government for not being able to take any substantial step towards peace talks, Mehsud said his Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) outfit would not hold dialogue (with the government) through the 'media.'

"The government is sincere about solving the issue of terrorism through talks with Taliban," Sharif told the meeting in Peshawar.

"We are seriously implementing the decision jointly taken by the All Parties' Conference (APC) for dialogue with Taliban."

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Idiots
Two men were killed by an explosion as they used a blowtorch to open up a strongbox that turned out to be full of fireworks at a Hopkinton, N.H., landscaping company early Tuesday morning, cops said.
Ooooooops...
The two men were dead when cops and firefighters showed up at the scene at New Yard Landscaping on Farrington Corner Road at 1:31 a.m., after a neighbor reported hearing the blast.
"What was that?"
"Sounds like an explosion down at the New Yard place!"

Authorities did not say why the men were there but said they did not have permission to be on the property in the middle of the night.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...better call Columbo.
The victims, Lucas Bourke of Allenstown, N.H., and Ethan Keeler of Epsom, N.H., both 21, were using an oxy-acetylene torch in an attempt to “gain entry to a closed metal container” filled with consumer fireworks when the box exploded, officials said.
"Ah, c'mon, Lucas. It'll be a pushover..."
It was unclear whether the two men knew what was in the metal box when they started heating it up.
"Hey, what's that smell?"
"Smells like firew.....

An investigation by the Hopkinton police and fire departments, as well as state Fire Marshal J. William Degnan, is ongoing.
"What's ya take, Muldoon?"
"Well, sarge, to me it looks like two idiot assholes tried to open up a safe fulla fireworks with a blowtorch."

U.S. Nuclear Command's Deputy Chief Sacked over Probe
[An Nahar] The deputy commander of U.S. nuclear forces has been fired from his post after being investigated for allegedly using counterfeit chips at a casino, officers said Wednesday.

The move was highly unusual against such a senior officer in U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees the country's nuclear-armed missiles, submarines and bombers.

Vice Admiral Tim Giardina, a career three-star submarine officer, was reassigned from his position as the No. 2 officer at STRATCOM to the Navy staff pending the outcome of a probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, military officers said.

General Robert Kehler, the chief of U.S. Strategic Command, had recommended Giardina be reassigned last month and the official decision to relieve him of his duty came this week.

The move was approved by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and President Barack Obama
If you have a small business, you didn't build that...
, officials said.

"On September 3, General Kehler, who is the commander of U.S. Strategic Command, suspended Admiral Giardina," the command's spokeswoman Navy Captain Pamela Kunze told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The recommendation was not announced publicly and the suspension was first reported by the Omaha World-Herald newspaper.

Giardina had held his job since December 2011, according to the Navy's chief front man, Admiral John Kirby. Giardina will be demoted a rank due to the change.

"He will be reassigned in the grade of rear admiral since he is no longer serving in a position requiring three stars," Kirby said.

India-Pakistan
Bomb blasts kill 10 in all four provinces
[Dawn] Bomb attacks hit all four picturesque provincial capitals (Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, Quetta, Lahore and Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
) and a northwestern district in Pakistain on Thursday, killing ten people and wounding more than 60, a day after the Taliban chief said his outfit would not hold dialogue (with the government) through the 'media.'

In the day's deadliest attack, a bicycle bomb tore through a crowded market area near a cop shoppe in the restive southwestern city of Quetta, killing six people and injuring art least 35 others.

Earlier, a low-intensity blast at a restaurant killed one person and maimed 13 in a popular food street in Lahore, the normally relatively peaceful capital of Punjab province which is the powerbase of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
The country's main political parties last month backed Sharif's proposal for peace talks with the Taliban, who have been waging a bloody insurgency against the state since 2007.

But a spate of bloody attacks in recent weeks -- including more than 140 killed in the space of a week in the northwestern city of Peshawar -- have led many to question the idea of negotiations.

A third blast on Thursday maimed a police officer on the ring road in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) province, which has regularly been hit by gun and kabooms in recent years.

Later in the evening, at least 12 soldiers were maimed when a security forces' patrol vehicle was targeted by a remote control bomb in the semi- tribal area of Bannu in the northwestern KP province.

Meanwhile in the latest incident, three suspected terrorist were killed while trying to move explosives in Karachi -- the capital of southern Sindh province which is also dubbed as economic hub of Pakistain.

A local police official told Dawn.com that explosives detonated unexpectedly in Manghopir area when three suspected Death Eaters riding a cycle of violence were trying to move the explosives to a target, killing all three on the spot.

Those killed in the Quetta attack included a policeman, city police chief Abdul Razaaq Cheema told AFP, while women and kiddies were among the maimed. "It was a timed device which was planted in a bicycle. Six people have been killed and 35 maimed," he said.

STL Indicts Fifth 'Hizbullah Supporter' in Hariri Assassination
[An Nahar] Special Tribunal for Leb Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen confirmed on Thursday an indictment against Hassan Habib Merhi who is accused of being involved in the February 14, 2005 Beirut attack that killed former Premier Rafik Hariri and 22 others.

The confirmed indictment and an arrest warrant were transmitted confidentially to the Lebanese authorities on August 6 so that they could search for, arrest and transfer the accused to STL custody, announced the tribunal in a statement on Thursday.

The Lebanese authorities were given 30 calendar days to carry out this obligation and report back on their efforts by September 5, 2013.

On September 6, the Lebanese Prosecutor General submitted his confidential report to Tribunal President, Judge Sir David Baragwanath, stating that so far the accused has not been found. Subsequently, the STL President requested additional measures be taken by the Lebanese authorities.

All of these steps have been confidential until now to allow the Lebanese authorities the best opportunity to apprehend the accused, continued the STL statement.

Merhi, is charged with a number of crimes including the crime of conspiracy aimed at committing a terrorist act. He is alleged to have acted in a conspiracy with Hizbullah members Mustafa Amin Badreddine, Salim Jamil Ayyash, Hussein Hassan Oneissi, and Assad Hassan Sabra in relation to the attack on February 14, 2005, all of whom have already been indicted.

The accused Merhi is alleged to have coordinated the preparation of the purported claim of responsibility as part of the preparations for and in furtherance of, the attack, said the STL statement.

The STL said Merhi is "a supporter of Hizbullah" who was born on December 12, 1965 in Beirut.

"He is the son of Habib Merhi and Latifa Abbas," it added, revealing that he has resided in Burj al-Barajneh and that "he is a citizen of Leb" whose "Lebanese civil registration is 1126/Zqaq-EI-Blat."

"Merhi, together with Badreddine, coordinated the preparation of the false claim of responsibility, and, at times, was in contact with Ayyash in relation to the preparations for the attack. Merhi, prior to the attack, coordinated the activities of Oneissi and Sabra in order to identify a suitable individual, later identified as Ahmad Abu Adass, who would be used to make a video-taped false claim of responsibility for the attack," the court announced in its indictment.

"Immediately following the attack, Merhi, coordinated the activities of Oneissi and Sabra, who participated in (i) disseminating statements falsely attributing responsibility for the attack; (ii) ensuring the delivery of the video, with a letter attached, containing the false claim of responsibility to Al-Jazeera
... an Arab news network headquartered in Qatar, notorious for carrying al-Qaeda press releases. The name means the Peninsula, as in the Arabian Peninsula. In recent years it has settled in to become slightly less biased than MSNBC, in about the same category as BBC or CBS...
; and (iii) ensuring the video would be broadcast," it added.

Under the current circumstances in Leb, Baragwanath has deemed the efforts by the Lebanese authorities to be sufficient to justify alternative means to search for the accused. As a result, he has determined to initiate a 30-day public advertisement phase with the help of the Lebanese authorities to locate the accused as well as to inform him of the charges against him and of his rights, which are guaranteed under international law.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Alleged Hizbullah 'Execution' Video Sparks Online Outrage
[An Nahar] A gory online video that shows suspected Hizbullah fighters executing gravely maimed Syrian rebels has sparked outrage and controversy in Leb.

The video shows gunnies in fatigues, at least one wearing the yellow arm band purportedly sported by the Lebanese group, dragging several bloodied men out of a van and shooting them dead.

In parts of the video, the men speak in the Lebanese dialect of Arabic, and at the end of the video one man calls them over, saying: "One moment, one moment. We are doing our duty, not avenging ourselves."

The others call out: "For the sake of God, for the sake of God."

The one minute, 40 second video's authenticity could not be confirmed, and it was unclear when or where it might have been shot.

Contacted by Agence La Belle France Presse, Hizbullah declined to comment on it.

Al-Arabiya television said it may have been filmed during the battle for Qusayr, a strategic Syrian town near the Lebanese border that Syrian troops recaptured from rebels with the help of Hizbullah earlier this year.

Lebanese media largely steered clear of the video, either because they were unable to confirm it or for fear of worsening sectarian tensions.

But the video fired up the rubes on Twitter, with many observers comparing Hizbullah to radical Sunni rebel groups that have carried out past atrocities.

"Between the Sunni Salafist jihadists and the Shiite fundamentalist jihadists, we really have to watch our backs," wrote Mustafa Fahas on Facebook.

On Twitter at least one user compared the video to the infamous clip of a Syrian rebel eating the organs of a dead Alawite, a member of the Shiite offshoot sect to which Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
also belongs.

"Horrific and disgusting," Lebanese editor Angie Nassar wrote in a Twitter post linking to the video.

Hizbullah -- which has always presented itself as Leb's first line of defense against Israel -- has come under intense criticism for its decision to enter the Syrian civil war on behalf of the Assad regime.

It has said it joined the battle to protect Leb from extreme Islamists among the ranks of the Syrian rebels and to protect Shiite holy sites in Damascus province.

No true musulman! Some clever memester with a pulpit could take advantage of the recent vogue for logical fallacies and have a good chunk of chatterers inwardly hearing "no true Scotsman" after every use of "Islamist". Me, I'm going to start cheerily chirping the former, totally nonconfrontationally and without explanation, every time I hear the latter, and see where that goes.
