Bracken: Tet, Take Two – Islam's 2016 European Offensive

#1  This essay came up this morning on Western Rifle Shooters Association website. It is now up on Gates of Vienna and is being translated into other languages. Bracken sends a chilling but very realistic scenario as to what he sees Islam doing, especially in Europe in 2016.

Suspected Jihadists Attack Cash Truck in Burkina Faso
Oh goody -- a new battlefield.
[AnNahar] Suspected jihadist fighters attacked an armored van transporting money from a gold mine in Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
Update: Mr. Compaore fled the country when he was overthrown in 2014, which was followed by a revolt against the interim government in September of this year. If historic patterns run true, they're due for a military or Marxist government next.
the country's security minister said Sunday, the latest sign of Islamist violence spreading from neighboring Mali.

A group of heavily gunnies with rocket launchers and automatic rifles attacked the truck in the country's north on Friday, killing the driver and wounding one other person, security minister Alain Zagre told AFP.

Police accompanying the van fought off the attackers, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace, a police source said.

"We think it is certainly a jihadist group that identified the Inata gold mine and decided to take action to get hold of funds," Zagre said.

Military operations had seriously disrupted Islamist fighters in Mali, forcing them to move to neighboring countries, Zagre said as his country went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president and parliament.

Security was tight for the election, with up to 25,000 troops deployed to ward off the threat of an attack, following two recent assaults against police barracks on the country's long western border with troubled Mali.

Iraq
Kurdish fighters say US special forces have been fighting Isis for months
[The Guardian] On a damp afternoon in Iraqi Kurdistan, a 29-year-old peshmerga fighter named Peshawa pulls out his Samsung Galaxy mobile phone, flicks hurriedly through his library until he finds the video he wants, and presses play.

The clip, filmed just after dawn on 11 September, shows four tall and western-looking men in the heat of a battle against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq. "These are the Americans," says Peshawa in a secretive tone.

One is crouched behind a machine gun firing round after round from the top of a fortified mound; another lies on his front a few feet away, legs outstretched and taking aim at the enemy with a long rifle. A third wields a long-lens camera taking photo after photo, and the last stands back, apparently overseeing the others during the combat south-west of the city of Kirkuk.

Homeless man beaten in April outside Phila. gas station dies
[Philly.com] The last time Diane Barnes visited her brother Robert, who was living on the streets in Olney, was in January. She brought him new boots for the cold weather. She also tried to give him new gloves.

"He insisted that I give [the gloves] to his friend," who also was homeless, his sister recalled Thursday night.

The next time she saw her brother, it was in a surveillance video released to the media showing him being viciously attacked outside a Sunoco in Olney on April 7. She recognized her brother from the new boots. On Wednesday, Robert Barnes, 51, died at Abington Memorial Hospital.

The video, which was widely aired, shows a vehicle pulling up to the Sunoco at 5338 N. Fifth St., and three women and several juveniles rushing out toward Barnes. In all, he was ambushed by six individuals who used Mace, a hammer, and the leg of a rocking chair as weapons. Barnes suffered multiple skull fractures and broken bones, police said. The attack left Barnes in a coma.

His sister said he eventually opened his eyes, but was unresponsive and remained in a vegetative state.

The Witches of the Ivy League
The rumpus over perceived racism at American universities, with its demands for "trigger warnings" against possibly hurtful statements, "safe spaces" to protect minority students against felt hostility, and "speech codes" which forbid statements that might offend self-styled victims, has turned into something of a circus.

...The targets are university administrators and faculty who without exception are commited liberals and professed enemies of racism, but who are insufficiently vigilant against "casual, everyday slights and insensitivities," as a US News commentary noted. It is one thing to revile the student protesters as "college crybullies," as my friend Roger Kimball did recently at the Wall Street Journal, and another to talk about rope in the house of the hanged.

Kimball sees this as the triumph of the 1960s radicalism that took root in universities and now has become the reigning ideology of the academic establishment. A widely-read Atlantic magazine commentary by Prof. Jonathan Haidt blames the hysteria on changes in child-rearing practice during the 1980s. But the hysteria at American universities is instantly recognizeable as a commplace if neglected practice of European civilization (among others), namely the witch-hunt. The 20 victims of the 1692 Salem witch trials have become the stuff of American legend, but the inquisitors of Massachusetts hardly make the league tables: up to 100,000 presumed witches were executed in Europe between 1450 and 1750, during the rise of the Age of Reason.

The Upside Down Campus Protester
h/t Instapundit
One common denominator characterizes almost all unrest on college campuses: the demands to create more "-studies" courses (black, Latino, feminist, gay, etc.) and thus to hire more -studies professors.

An empiricist from Mars might observe that the chief beneficiaries of the protests are -studies academics. They alone will win more jobs and classes, which otherwise few students wish to attend and from which fewer gain any factual knowledge, written and oral speaking skills, or improvement in inductive thinking.

Expedition To Study Global Warming Put On Hold Because Of TOO MUCH ICE
[The Daily Caller] An expedition to study the effects of global warming was put on hold Wednesday. The reason? Too much ice.

The CCGS Amundsen, a Medium Arctic icebreaker and Arctic research vessel operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, was to travel throughout Hudson Bay, a body of water in northeastern Canada, but was rerouted to help ships who were stuck in the icy water.

A Coast Guard officer said the conditions were the "worst he's seen in 20 years," reports CBC news.

"Obviously it has a large impact on us," says Martin Fortier, executive director of ArcticNet, which coordinates research on the vessel. "It's a frustrating situation."

ArcticNet is a network of scientists who study "the impacts of climate change and modernization in the coastal Canadian Arctic."

The vessel is one of only two icebreakers in the Arctic, leaving the ship obligated to reroute their travel plans to help break ice for resupply ships.

Johnny Leclair, an assistant commissioner for the Coast Guard, said there should be two more icebreakers headed to the Arctic in the next week, which would free up their ship to continue on their originally planned trip.

Fortier is hopeful the season will still be productive.

Correlation is not causation, but many, if not all, of man’s worst times since the last glacial maximum occur during colder and dryer periods. Often these times were made worse by warfare as in the Greek Dark Ages, the sacking of Rome, the collapse of the Akkadian Empire, etc. The colder and more arid climate could have been part of the cause of the wars. We go to war when we are starving and thirsty. More importantly, I was unable to find evidence of a crisis* that was due to warming.

* not to be confused with modern media created and hyped pseudo-crisis

#5  the issue is more complex

for example, the medieval warm period resulted in population increase and when harvests were bad with some fierce winters beginning in 1310 or so, the population was weakened and were easier targets for the bubonic plague which hit europe beginning in about 1315

Lifting Champ's Oil Export ban will Create 300k Jobs And $38 Billion
[Daily Caller] Lifting the oil export ban will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars according a Friday article by Heritage Foundation economist Nicolas Loris.

"Lifting the ban would generate more jobs for Americans, supply the United States and the world with more affordable energy and provide important geopolitical benefits for Washington and its allies. Unfortunately, some politicians want to hold this common-sense measure hostage until they get funding for their pet projects." Loris says, and concludes that "[t]he decision to export crude oil should be decided by those who produce and sell the oil, not by Washington bureaucrats."

Presently, selling American crude oil to other countries is illegal, despite the best efforts of House Republicans who voted to lift the ban in October. The Senate is preparing to act to lift the ban, but President Barack Obama has threatened to veto any attempt to do so.

Exporting oil will boost U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) by $38 billion, reduce the trade deficit by $22 billion and add 300,000 new jobs by 2020, according to studies cited by Loris.

#1  Must be a tough call for Champ. Selling off our oil means we have less and helps keep the price down for poor undeveloped countries - like Kenya. On the other hand, it keeps the price low, which is bad for his oil-producing buddies. But it would reduce unemployment. But that reduces government dependence, which is a good thing.

Good thing he has ValJar to point him in the right direction - this is sooooo confusing!
Posted by: Bobby || 11/30/2015 7:57 Comments || Top||

#2  Champ's export ban? Here I thought that was something that popped up well before the man was even around. IIRC that the deal for the Alaskan oil pipeline banned export of that crude. Then the '73 oil crisis did it's thing to the process.

If there's anything at is subject to vagaries of the market, oil certainly is one. I'm sure the quick buck artists are desperate to dump on the international market at our long term expense.

Right now we're sitting on a self sufficiency as the world is going mad. Better to look long term for our security.

Senator Rubio Vows to Restore Intelligence Programs Restricted by Obama
[PJ Media] With our president running off to Paris not in response to the recent terror attacks, but to deal with what he considers our greatest national security threat -- climate change -- 2016 is more than ever a foreign policy election.

Not surprisingly, however, Republican candidates are emphasizing this continued spread of radical Islamic terrorism. Few have been more focused on the issue than Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. PJ Media's Diary of a Mad Voter sent Senator Rubio six questions in the crucial area of foreign policy, which he has been gracious enough to answer. Among his responses below, Rubio has promised to restore overseas intelligence programs Obama has restricted.

Part of an ongoing series, these questions are not meant to be "gotchas," but an opportunity for the candidates to explore their views at length, which we feel they don't always get to do during the televised debates. Previously, Senator Ted Cruz answered a similar series of foreign policy questions for us. Readers can find his answers here.

PJM: Once deemed a "jayvee team" and then "contained" by President Obama, events (Paris, Sinai, Beirut) have shown ISIS very much alive, growing and dedicated to their goal of a global caliphate under Sharia. Furthermore, the attack in Mali has demonstrated the supposedly quiescent al Qaeda also remains active. Making matters worse, a new Pew Poll reveals upwards of 287 million of those polled in 11 Muslims countries viewed ISIS favorably or were "neutral" to it. Given the horrific situation, what specific concrete steps would a Rubio administration take starting day one to put an end to these and similar groups militarily and ideologically?

In Confidential Memo, the Hildebeest Urged Champ To Close Gitmo
[Huffpoo] WASHINGTON -- Weeks before she stepped down as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton wrote a memo urging President Barack Obama to step up his administration's efforts to close the military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay in his second term. In the confidential January 2013 memo obtained by The Huffington Post, Clinton told Obama she worried that support for closing Guantanamo would further erode unless the administration took action.

"We must signal to our old and emerging allies alike that we remain serious about turning the page of GTMO and the practices of the prior decade," Clinton wrote in the document, using the military abbreviation for the U.S. naval base. "The revitalization of transfers, efforts to prosecute some detainees in federal courts, a longer-term approach to the return of Yemeni detainees, and credible periodic reviews would send the signal and renew a credible detention policy."

Florida '€˜Muslim-free' gun shop owner wins discrimination suit
[Wash Times] A federal discrimination lawsuit filed by a Muslim activist group against a Florida gun retailer owner who declared his shop a "Muslim-Free Zone" has been dismissed.

U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ruled that Florida Gun Supply owner Andy Hallinan's sign was protected by the First Amendment, and the activists couldn't prove they were injured by the action, a local NBC affiliate reported.

Concealed Carry and Home Defense: 6 Home Defense Carbines, 5 are NOT AR's
[The Daily Caller] First things first: Shotguns are devastatingly powerful. Nothing can compare to the 12 gauge at close range. Even birdshot, which is still one mass of moving lead at close range, will tear a human to shreds.

In my battery I have a Remington 870 and a bandoleer of slugs and buck ready to go for when the SHTF. You don’t lose much with a 20 gauge at close range either, and you gain some agility with a smaller gun, and more family members are likely to respond better to the 20.

The second point I’d like to make is on handguns for home defense: Shoot the biggest cartridge you can handle. That means a .40 S&W, a .45 ACP or a .357 magnum. Ask a doctor in an urban area where shootings are common and you will find these result in the most one-shot kills.

A 9mm? Well, if that’s what you have, use it, but they just can’t compare to the bigger rounds. I’m not a caliber snob myself, but face it: Bigger is better if you can handle the gun. And again, I’m not talking about concealed carry which can dictate a smaller round because you just can’t carry a larger gun at times, but I’m talking about guarding the homestead and your bedside piece.

But what is the best home defense gun? A rifle carbine.

RU to Escalate Syria Offensive With Ground Troops, Arab Media Claim
[Breitbart] TEL AVIV -- News reports in the Arab world claim Russia is planning to escalate its military involvement in Syria by sending in ground troops and increasing airstrikes, according to translations provided by the Middle East Research Institute (MEMRI).

Syrian and pro-Syrian Lebanese media have published reports over the past two weeks claiming that Russia is launching a new stage of its offensive in Syria, with December witnessing unprecedented escalation in which a ground operation will be launched. "December will be hot on the ground in Syria," Lebanese daily Al Akhbar reported.

In a talk with the Russia's Ministry of Defense on November 20, President Vladimir Putin said that the current offensive in Syria is "not enough to clear Syria of armed and terrorist groups and defend Russia from a possible terrorist attack," adding his hope that the next stages of the offensive will lead to better results.

According to MEMRI, Russia's decision to increase its involvement in Syria is likely motivated by the upcoming UN supervised meeting on January 1, 2016, in which Syrian regime and opposition representatives are set to negotiate. Russia and its allies Syria and Iran are hoping that the next stage of the offensive will earn them "bargaining chips" ahead of the meeting.

Arab teen holding firebomb said shot dead in Jerusalem and other excitements yesterday
[IsraelTimes] Border Police officers shot and killed a Paleostinian teenager during a riot in East Jerusalem on Sunday. Police said they fired at a youth who was preparing to throw a Molotov cocktail.

A Paleostinian health ministry official told AFP he confirmed the death, without giving further details.

An Israel Police statement said that officers fired at a Paleostinian holding a Molotov cocktail in the Ras al-Amoud neighborhood after they came under attack, but could not confirm a hit.

"The forces, who were in real life-threatening danger, fired at the lower body of the suspect seen with a Molotov cocktail," a police statement said, noting that other rioters with Molotov cocktails had escaped.

The Paleostinian Ma'an news agency identified the Paleostinian as Ayman Samih al-Abbasi, 16, from Silwan.

On Sunday afternoon, dozens of Paleostinians were maimed in violent festivities with Israeli security troops in a series of riots in the West Bank, according to Paleostinian reports.

Those festivities come hours after a stabbing attack at an entrance to Jerusalem's Old City and another near a bus stop left two people maimed and an attacker killed.

Early on Sunday, a 38-year-old Paleostinian stabbed an Israeli Border Police officer at Damascus Gate, lightly wounding him. The attacker, who was identified as Bassem Salah from the northern West Bank city of Nablus, was rubbed out by officers at the scene.

Later in the morning, a Nepalese woman was lightly maimed in a stabbing attack near a bus stop in Jerusalem, after which the attacker fled. A 17-year-old Paleostinian suspect from Hebron was locked away

at a construction site near the scene shortly after.

Army closes third Hebron radio station for ‘incitement’

[IsraelTimes] Soldiers raid offices of Radio Dream, confiscate equipment and order it remain shuttered for six months, Paleostinians say.

Israel Defense Forces soldiers on Saturday night descended on the offices of a popular radio station in the West Bank city of Hebron, confiscated equipment, and shut it down due to accusations that it has been inciting violence, Paleostinian reports said.

It was the third radio station to be raided in recent weeks amid persistent Israeli claims that a recent wave of Paleostinian attacks has been spurred by incitement in social and traditional media.

Many of the attacks have taken place in and around Hebron, while others -- including deadly attacks in Israel -- have been carried out by forces of Evil who set out from the area.

US, allies conduct 22 strikes against Islamic State
[Ynet] The United States and its allies conducted 19 strikes against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Iraq and three in Syria on Saturday, the coalition leading the operations said in a statement.

Seven of the strikes in Iraq hit around Ramadi, destroying a machine gun position, two ISIL buildings and two weapons caches, and wounding an ISIL fighter, the Combined Joint Task Force said on Sunday. The coalition also struck targets in 11 other Iraqi cities, including Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
Sinjar and djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
The coalition said it used bomber, fighter, attack and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets.

In Syria, two strikes near Raqqa destroyed two ISIL vehicles and struck two separate ISIL tactical units, it said. One strike near Dayr Az Zawr destroyed an ISIL front end loader.

Swede convicted of spying for Hezbollah, but gets light sentence
[Ynet] Hassan Hizran gets only 18 months in prison after court found he was reluctant to cooperate with Hezbollah handlers and did not provide all the information

A Swedish national of Paleostinian-Lebanese descent was found guilty on Sunday of passing intelligence to Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

According to the indictment, Hassan Hizran, 55, joined Hezbollah in the summer of 2009 as an intelligence asset. He was tasked with recruiting Israeli Arab assets with social ties to Israeli Jews, army officials and government officials, as well as passing information about strategic military points and bases.

The spy held meetings with his handler and gave him information. He was pressured to recruit an Israeli Arab but successfully evaded the mission. The indictment in August claimed that Hizran received $2,300 in 2009 for his cooperation.

Hizran was convicted as part of a plea bargain, after originally being indicted for passing of information and contacting a foreign agent.

As part of the plea bargain, Hizran was sentenced to 18 months in prison, mostly due to the fact his contact with Hezbollah operatives was reluctant and measured and he displayed low motivation to continue cooperating with them.

When Hizran tried to avoid meeting with the Hezbollah operatives, he was pressured and threatened that they would make it difficult for him to return to Sweden, where he lives, and make the life harder for his family in Leb.

In addition, the plea notes that the accused did not provide some of the information he was required to, and in that reduced the damage he caused to Israel's security.

Syrian opposition says Russian strikes kill 18
Airstrikes believed to have been carried out by Russian warplanes killed at least 18 people and wounded dozens more on Sunday in a northern Syrian town held by insurgents, Syrian opposition media reported.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrikes struck the town of Ariha, killing at least 18 people and wounding dozens more. The Local Coordination Committees, an activist collective, said the airstrikes struck a busy market, inflicting heavy casualties. The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, said the airstrike destroyed three buildings in the centre of Ariha.

Ariha Today, a Facebook page that covers events in the town, said the airstrikes were carried out by Russian warplanes, killing 40 people and wounding more than 70. Conflicting tolls are common in the chaotic aftermath of violent incidents in Syria.

If Russian warplanes carried out Sunday's strikes it would be one of the deadliest incidents since Moscow began launching airstrikes in Syria two months ago. Opposition activists say scores of people have been killed by Russian strikes since the air campaign began on September 30.

An amateur video posted online showed several men being treated on the floor of what appeared to be a clinic. Blood stains could be seen on the floor's white tiles. On the street outside, four men could be seen lying near the building, with several young men weeping over them. Shortly afterward, an ambulance arrived and a wounded man in a wheelchair was carried into the clinic.

Russia says its airstrikes are targeting the Daesh group and other "terrorists," but Western officials and Syrian rebels say most of the strikes have focused on central and northern Syria, where Daesh does not have a strong presence.
An Nahar adds:
The strikes hit the Idlib province town of Ariha, which is controlled by the Army of Conquest, a rebel alliance of mainly Islamist groups, including al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Army of Conquest alliance seized Ariha in May after heavy fighting with regime forces.

Desecration case suspect on judicial remand
[DAWN] GUJRAT: Police claim to have jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
the suspect involved in the desecration of a shrine and the Holy Koran that were set ablaze on Friday morning at Bowali Khurd village in Sara-e-Alamgir Saddar police precincts.

A local court of Gujrat sent the suspect to district jail on judicial remand after the police produced him before judicial magistrate Zaman Ranjha at district headquarters instead of going to the court of area magistrate in the respective Sara-e-Alamgir tehsil due to security reasons.

Police say the suspect, who belongs to the same village, is said to be a psychopath who had turned into a 'vagabond' after his family severed links with him due to his 'bad habits'.

Gujrat District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chattha and District Police Officer Rai Zameerul Haq told news hounds at a joint news conference at Jinnah Hall of Sara-e-Alamgir that the law-enforcement agencies had traced and arrested suspect Irfan alias Fani and all necessary steps would be taken for speedy trial.

PML-N MNA Abid Raza Kotla and MPA Malik Hanif Awan were also present at the news conference.

The bigwigs also commended the positive role of local people, politicians, media and civil society in tackling the issue.

The DPO said Sherlocks from various LEAs were probing the suspect.

Gujrat SP (investigation) Kamran Mumtaz told Dawn that the suspect had been traced with the help of the locals and he confessed to committing the crime of torching the shrine of Baba Meray Wali Sarkar and the copies of the Holy Koran.

He said the suspect had been seen by locals while roaming in village streets just before the people came to know the incident and residents informed the Sherlocks who arrested him on Friday evening.

Soddy warbirds attacks boats carrying arms to Houthis
ADEN: Warplanes from the Saudi-led coalition hit Saturday two small boats carrying weapons to Iran-backed Houthi terrorists on the southern coast of Yemen, a military official said.

Weapons were being unloaded from the two fishing boats near Belhaf, in Shabwa province, when the pre-dawn raid struck killing three smugglers, the military official said.

The coalition has imposed a blockade on Yemen to prevent weapons from reaching the Houthis and allied renegade troops loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Troops loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, backed by coalition air and ground support, in July pushed the rebels out of Aden — Yemen’s second city — and four other southern provinces, including Shabwa. But the area around Belhaf is controlled by tribesmen and some are involved in smuggling weapons to the terrorists further north, the official said.

Government forces backed by the coalition launched an all-out offensive recently to push the rebels out of the southwestern province of Taez and break the siege of loyalists in its provincial capital.

The UN aid chief earlier accused Houthis of blocking and diverting deliveries of aid to Taez where some 200,000 people are living under siege.

Government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition have been battling since September to push the terrorists out of Taez as part of their campaign to recapture the capital Sanaa farther north.

“Houthi and popular committees are blocking supply routes and continue to obstruct the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid and supplies into Taez city,” said Stephen O’Brien, the under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs.

Burglar stuck in chimney dies after homeowner lights fire
[Fox] A burglar stuck in a chimney died Saturday after the homeowner lit a fire in the fireplace, California authorities said.

The burglar climbed in the chimney Friday night to rob the home in the small city of Huron but became stuck, Fox 40 reports. The man was discovered just before 3 p.m. Saturday when the homeowner came home and lit the fireplace.

The homeowner heard the burglar scream from inside the chimney and worked to put the fire out, causing the house to fill up with smoke, the station reported.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said firefighters responded to the home and dismantled the chimney to rescue the burglar. But when they pulled him out, he was dead.

The coroner's offices removed the body from the scene and will conduct an autopsy to determine his identity and the exact cause of death, a sheriff's deputy said.

#1  causing the house to fill up with smoke,

This reminds me of what my older brother Dave did back in the late 1970's. I don't remember exactly why, but he hated the neighbors two houses down, so during a snowstorm, he climbs onto their roof with a 2' x 2' piece of plywood and a couple of bricks after they started a fire in their fireplace. Over the chimney this stuff went, and over to the neighbors' house went the firetrucks fifteen minutes later.

NATO reaffirms military support to Afghanistan
KABUL -- The United States-led NATO coalition on Sunday reaffirmed its commitment to Afghanistan's security forces and said it would not leave the Afghan forces alone on the battlefield. As fears grow over the increase in violence seen these past few months and over what lies ahead in next year's fighting season, the Resolute Support Mission reaffirmed its commitments to train, advice and assist Afghan forces in their bid to curb the Taliban.

Resolute Support Mission’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Brigadier General Wilson Shoffner said the coalition was considering a comprehensive review of the planning process as well as the targeting process at all levels of the command chain.

NATO said the alliance would take new initiatives to protect civilians during engagements, adding that the alliance's advisory role and technical support would continue to be given to Afghan troops until sustainable peace and stability was restored in the country.

At least 13,000 NATO soldiers still serve in Afghanistan out of which 9,800 are deployed by the US Army. It is expected that up to 8,000 US troops will continue their mission in Afghanistan beyond 2016.
Unless Champ brings them all home early for some stupid reason.

Europe
Germany planning to deploy 1,200 troops for Daesh fight
Germany is planning to deploy 1,200 troops to help France in the fight against Daesh in Syria, its army chief said on Sunday, in what would be the military's biggest deployment abroad.
I'll believe it when I see it, but this would constitute a modest surprise...
"From a military point of view, around 1,200 soldiers would be necessary to run the planes and ship," army chief of staff General Volker Wieker told Bild am Sonntag newspaper, adding that the mission would begin "very quickly once a mandate is obtained".

"The government is seeking a mandate this year," said Wieker.

Berlin on Thursday offered France Tornado reconnaissance jets, a naval frigate, aerial refuelling and satellite images in the fight against the Daesh group. Between four and six Tornados would be deployed to deliver images of the ground, even in poor weather and during the night, Wieker said.

Asked why Germany had shied away from participating in direct air strikes, Wieker said the coalition already had "sufficient forces and means" dealing with that aspect of the battle.

"What is needed is reconnaissance on the ground, so that these forces can be deployed effectively. Our Tornados can contribute a lot in that area," he said.

Talks are ongoing with Turkey and Jordan on stationing the planes in Incirlik - which also serves as a base for US jets, as well as in Amman.

Wieker swiped aside any criticism that Germany had opted for "the least dangerous" tasks, saying: "This allegation is not justified. What is the difference when you fly a bomber jet or a reconnaisance plane over the same area? The levels of threat and danger are the same."

Post-war Germany has been traditionally reluctant to send troops abroad, although it has joined UN-mandated missions in the Balkans and elsewhere, and the Nato coalition in Afghanistan. Germany has not taken part in air strikes against the Daesh in Syria and Iraq, which have been mainly flown by US and French aircraft.

After France last week invoked a clause requiring EU member states to provide military assistance after the Paris attacks, Germany swiftly announced its participation in the fight in Syria.

British jihadist Sally Jones threatens to blow herself up
Miss Sally can just blow me...
[ARA News] DAMASCUS – Sally Jones, who left the UK to join the extremist group of Islamic State (ISIS), has threatened to blow herself up after her husband was killed in a drone strike by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria’s Raqqa.

Jones, 47, is a former punk rocker, originally from Kent. She has converted to Islam and has been radicalized recently through direct contact with jihadist groups online.

Quoting a Muslim extremist woman who killed herself along with scores of Russian soldiers in a truck bombing in 2000, Jones has expressed herself on the social media that she could be about to become a “black widow” suicide bomber.

The term “Black Widows” refers to a group of Chechen Muslim women whose husbands were killed by the Russian forces in Chechnya.

She moved to Syria with her 10-year-old son in 2013 and joined ISIS after being brainwashed.

“I know what I’m doing. Paradise has a price and I hope this will be the price for Paradise,” Jones tweeted. If she carried out her threat, she would be ISIS’s first widely known female suicide bomber.

Her husband Junaid Hussain, 21, was a cyber-hacker and a key propagandist and recruiter for the ISIS terror group. He was killed in an airstrike in Raqqa, the major bastion of ISIS in Syria.

Jones has been following her husband’s path, recruiting young men and women to join ISIS’s ranks.

“I would never love anyone but him,” the extremist widow said on Tweeter, referring to her dead husband, though the group’s leadership prevents widows from staying a long time without husbands, according to ISIS-linked sources.

Jones’s message came after her husband found killed in an airstrike by a U.S.-led drone on Raqqa last August.

300,000 Acres Of Land Grabbed Illegally: Nangarhar Officials
[Tolo News] A number of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
provincial council members along with residents on Sunday expressed their concerns over the rampant land-grabbing practice currently being witnessed in the province.

They say that numerous influential people in the province are usurping privately-owned and government property -- including mosques and public parks.

However the mayor of Jalalabad rejected claims that mosques and public picnic areas have been seized.

The mayor, Hamidullah Afghan, said: "This area is 23 meters in length including 13 meters which is related to public park. The area is under construction. A greenery area will be built in front of the park which is part of the contract and there is no grounds for grabbing the lands."

According to local officials, more than 300,000 acres of land has been grabbed illegally in the province over the past few years.

One resident of Jalalabad, Jamila, claims that influential people have illegally seized four acres of her land. She has appealed to the authorities to ensure those guilty are brought to book.

She said: "I have at least two acres of land but this man wants to grab it because he is powerful. It is six months that I am working with the Attorney General Office [AGO]. I have a letter from Nangarhar provincial council which has mentioned that the man has grabbed my land but the AGO is giving me the run around and every time they tell me to come back another day."

However she is not the only Nangarhar resident who has fallen victim to this problem. Residents say it is a common occurrence throughout the province.

"This area was once a public park and people used it for different purposes including sports but now it has been grabbed and I have no idea whether they have the permission of the municipality or not," a resident of Nangarhar said.

A number of provincial council members have also expressed their concerns over this issue.

One member Zabihullah Zemarai said: "Lots of properties have been grabbed or are on the verge of being grabbed. The former president [Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai

Another provincial council member, Suhrab Qaderi said: "They build houses or shops where there are green areas. This is illegal and it should not be done."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran demands closure of UN nuclear watchdog probe
[DAWN] Iran said on Sunday there would be "no final implementation" of a nuclear deal with world powers unless a probe into allegations of past weapons research is closed.

The declaration, by a top security official, comes after the head of the UN nuclear watchdog IAEA said a report into the possible military dimensions of Iran's activities would not be "black and white".

Iran has always denied seeking to develop an atomic weapons capability, insisting its nuclear programme is for peaceful energy production and medical purposes only.

Referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the July 14 agreement's official name, Admiral Ali Shamkhani, said anything short of the watchdog's probe being closed was "unacceptable to Iran".

"Without the closure of the file regarding past issues, there is no possibility of implementing the JCPOA," the official IRNA news agency reported him as saying.

Suicide bomb attack kills
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Rebel fighters of the Syrian opposition blew up Sunday several headquarters for the regime’s army forces in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, killing and wounding dozens of troops, media activists reported.

The explosions was followed by fierce clashes between the two sides.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activist Wael Mohammed confirmed that Aleppo rebels (Operation Chamber of Fatih Halab) in conjunction with other Islamic factions, fought fierce battles against the Syrian army forces and allied militias for several hours subsequent to detonating a series of regime-held buildings in Seif al-Dawla district in Aleppo.

“Opposition fighters had already dug a tunnel under these buildings, or headquarters ran by pro-Assad forces, and then detonated them with remote control, killing and wounding dozens regime troops,” he added.

The source pointed out that fighting continued in the neighborhoods of Salah al-Din, Seif al-Dawla and al-Ashrafiya for several hours, during which a number of casualties fell from both sides.

In the meantime, pro-regime army forces targeted the neighborhood of Bani Zaid in Aleppo with more than 15 artillery shells, local sources said. Several civilian casualties were reported in the shelling.

In return, Syrian rebels bombed the regime-held neighborhoods of al-Meidan, Suleiman al-Halabi and the Jamiyat al-Zahra with several homemade rockets, causing the deaths of two civilians and the injury of six others, some of them are in critical conditions.

Opposition fighters in the city of Aleppo are trying to ignite several fighting fronts simultaneously in a bid to disperse the strength of the regime’s army and allied Shiite militias. By this, they are trying to relief rebel fighters in the southern fronts of Aleppo.

Terror Networks
Lords of darkness
[DAWN] IN 2004 Abu Musab Zarqawi, leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, wrote a letter to the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
in which he set out his organization's strategy. Outlining Iraq's ethnic and sectarian fault lines, Zarqawi declared his intention to target Iraq's majority Shia population in order to create a reaction against Iraq's Sunnis. He wrote, "If we succeed in dragging [the Shias] into the arena of sectarian war, it will become possible to awaken the inattentive Sunnis as they feel imminent danger and annihilating death at the hands of the [Shias]."

The logic was that those Sunnis, or some of them at least, would then flock to Al Qaeda's banners. At the very least, the idea of coexistence and political compromise, abhorrent as it was to Zarqawi, would be badly damaged if not destroyed.

Afghanistan
Experts Advise Against Establishment Of Militia Groups
[Tolo News] Military experts on Sunday warned that unless the establishment of militia groups is stopped, the practice could lead to the collapse of government.

But the Interior Ministry has assured the nation that it will prevent the formation of such groups, stating they can negatively impact rule of law and nation building efforts.

The recent formation of militia groups in the country has sparked public concern. People believe that if they are not stopped, they could pose a problem in the future.

Jawid Kohistani, a military analyst said: "It has been seen in the past that militias have resulted in the collapse of governments therefore the Afghan government should take this issue very seriously in order to prevent problems in future."

An MP Safiullah Muslim said: "I think if creating militia groups continues it will become a problem for security - like the Taliban."

Meanwhile the Interior Ministry is aware of the issue and is reportedly working on a strategy to stop the practice.

MoI front man Sediq Sediqqi said: "Establishing militia groups will not have any place in Afghanistan because such groups can harm security, nation building and governance."

This comes after the first deputy speaker in the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) Abdul Zaher Qadir recently accused government of supporting Daesh [Islamic State]. He also said he had established a militia group to fight Daesh [Islamic State] in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..

, Sayed Zafar Hashemi said: "After the first deputy's accusation President [Ashraf] Ghani appointed a delegation to investigate his [Qadir's] claims."

Many people believe that the establishment of militia groups will not be in the best interests of the country and many think there is no guarantee that such groups will not start fighting government forces, which will ultimately lead to more insecurity in the country.

Pakistan throws weight behind war against IS
BIRGU: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Friday that Pakistan regarded the militant Islamic State (IS) group as a terrorist organisation and supports international efforts to counter the threats posed by it.
Sure he does. How about al-Qaeda? The guys slipping over the line of control in Kashmir?
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other world leaders attended two retreat sessions on the second day of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that focused on violent extremism, Sustainable Development Goals and migration. The sessions held at the 14th century Saint Angelo Fort situated in Malta’s historic city of Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, gathered the world leaders to delve upon finding working solutions to the issues that were impacting the Commonwealth countries.

The sessions were joined by heads of government, including Malta’s Joseph Muscat, Britain’s David Cameron, Canada’s Justin Trudeau, Australia’s Malcolm Turnbull, French President Francois Hollande, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and other representatives from 53 member states. The retreat sessions provided the CHOGM leaders an opportunity to mingle with each other, and have their say in bilateral exchanges away from the public platform. Besides exchange of pleasantries, the heads of government did not miss the opportunity to share with each other their opinions on current global security challenges and the suite of domestic, regional and international policy responses required to counter extremism.

In an informal interaction with other heads of government, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif conveyed Pakistan’s strong condemnation of terrorist activities whether committed by individuals, groups or states resulting in violence or threat of violence. He apprised other leaders that Pakistan was also cooperating with the international community to deal with militancy and fully implemented the UN Security Council sanction regimes against terrorism.

The CHOGM leaders shared views on promoting global partnerships between the Commonwealth and other like-minded organisations pursuing similar agendas and stressed upon the states to invest in preventive measures to protect their citizens from threat of violence extremism. During the second retreat session held with the agenda of implementation of SDGs and migration, the prime minister informed other leaders that Pakistan was facing the issue of migrants and refugees from over 35 years. He stressed that Commonwealth must advocate long-term view of migration with more opportunities for regular and legal migration.

Bangladesh
Showdown in Tejgaon
[Dhaka Tribune] Fierce violence broke out in the capital's Tejgaon yesterday as police and transport workers clashed for around an hour over an eviction drive in the area.

At least seven people, including journalists and city corporation employees, were maimed during the violence, while several vehicles in the area were also vandalised.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq, who was present with the eviction team, had to take shelter inside a workers' union office during the violence.

Law enforcers and locals said the transport workers -- although agitated -- were initially cooperative when the DNCC authorities started the drive at Tejgaon truck stand in the morning.

But tensions crossed the tipping point after a bulldozer shoved a covered van, which the workers said had been standing there for some time.

Police asked transport workers to remove the covered van, but no one cared. Then the bulldozer hit the covered van. Angered at the incident, workers started throwing bricks at the police, who reportedly retaliated with rubber bullets.

Demonstrating workers said two of the protesters, transport manager Bodruddoza, 55, and truck driver Jasim Uddin, 40, were hit by bullets shot by the police. Another garment worker named Masum Billah was also hit by a bullet.

Santu Chandro Das, assistant sub-inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Bodruddoza was admitted with gunshot wounds to his both legs, Jasim was hit on his right ear and arm, and Masum had wounds on his arm and back.

All of the injured men were released after primary treatment, the ASI added.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
claims of police shooting were denied by Tejgaon zone Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar. He termed the situation an isolated incident and said: "The police did not open fire on transport workers. Some people are distracting them by speaking about police shooting." The police also did not arrest anyone in connection with the clash, he added.

During the violence, protesters allegedly assaulted The Daily Star photographer Anisur Rahman, bdnews24.com photographer Tanvir Ahmed and two city corporation employees.

Media vehicles belonging to Channel i, Independent Television, Ekushey Television, two pick-up vans of the city corporation, and DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq's SUV were vandalised. The adjoining Tejgaon and Sat Rasta Intersection remained closed to traffic for around three hours, which caused traffic tailbacks in the nearby areas.

Mayor caught in violence

As the violence unfolded outside, the mayor, who went to the Tejgaon truck stand around 1pm to oversee the eviction drive, stayed inside the Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Union office there. Railways Minister Md Mazibul Hoque also went to the scene with Annisul, but left under police protection as violence broke.

"I have been running the Tejgaon bus stand eviction drive in consultation with the railways minister and local transport leaders for the sake of the city dwellers. I will not retreat from the drive in the face of protest from some grabbers," Mayor Annisul told news hounds while inside the union office.

"The drive will continue. This mayor is not a coward who will leave amid such chaos. We are clearing government land. The prime minister is with me in this move. I am not scared of anyone," he said. Commenting on the injuries, he said: "I have heard that one person was injured. But I have no idea if it is true or a rumour."

The mayor said some people were instigating others to throw bricks at law enforcers and the DCC officials.

Also present there, Truck and Covered Van Owners Association President Rustom Ali expressed his support for the eviction drive. "We have been announcing for the past three or four days to clear the truck stand. We fully support the eviction drive." He, however, added that some quarters had been trying to prevent the move. "Some grabbers, groups of workers and mechanics who are dependent on the truck stand for their livelihoods are instigating others against the eviction."

Yesterday's eviction drive follows an earlier ultimatum set by Mayor Annisul, who told truck owners on November 8 to clear illegal infrastructure from Tejgaon to increase parking space and reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Europe
Police, migrants clash on Macedonia border
Police in Macedonia fired tear gas and stun grenades at desperate migrants stranded for days at the Greek border and who are demanding passage to western Europe, as soldiers began erecting a metal fence to keep them out.

Macedonia, along with other Balkan countries on the migrant route, began turning away "economic migrants" nearly two weeks ago. Human rights groups have criticized the decision, under which only Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans are allowed through. The new restrictions triggered days of protests from Iranians, Pakistanis, Moroccans and others, stranded in squalid tent camps on the border. Some Iranians have sewn their lips shut. One man on Saturday threw himself on railway lines before the police, screaming and flailing.
Was he then taken to a secure psychiatric facility?
Saturday's violence broke out after one migrant, believed to be a Moroccan, was electrocuted and badly burned when he climbed on top of a train wagon. An angry crowd surged towards lines of Macedonian police and began throwing stones, a Reuters photographer at the scene said.
So they were Palestinians?
The police responded with tear gas and stun grenades, driving the crowd back, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Some officers threw stones.

In a surge that began about 18 months ago, migrants have been flowing across Balkan borders, having landed by boat in Greece from Turkey. Human rights groups say international conventions require countries to treat asylum requests on merit, not on the basis of nationality.
"International conventions" didn't anticipate three million asylum requests...
Earlier on Saturday, Macedonian soldiers began driving metal poles around 3 meters high into the cold, muddy ground, building a barrier similar to that erected by Hungary on its southern border. The Macedonian government said it had no intention of sealing its border completely. A government spokesman said the aim of the fence was "to direct the inflow of people towards the controlled points for their registration and humane treatment."

"We would like to underline that the border will remain open," said spokesman Aleksandar Gjorgjiev. "We will allow passage for the people who come from war-affected regions as we have done thus far."

Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia say they began filtering the migrants after Slovenia, further along the route, announced it would start doing the same.

Kimy Hassan Sayfo's daughters and granddaughters have been held captive by ISIS. Two daughters recently escaped but extremist fighters have kept her young granddaughters "for themselves," she said. Her story echoes those of countless others across this vast tent city full of Yazidis, a tiny and ancient religious minority reviled and persecuted by ISIS.

More than 3,000 women and girls were taken captive when ISIS attacked ancestral Yazidi villages around northwestern Iraq's Sinjar Mountain in August 2014. Nearly half-a-million people have been displaced since, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government's Yazidi Affairs Directorate.

Today, community leaders say around 2,000 women and girls are still being bought and sold in ISIS-controlled areas. The young become sex slaves and older women are beaten and used as house slaves, according to survivors and accounts from ISIS militants.

The women and children were held in a school where, she said, the guards would come at night to take away women and rape them.

ISIS has published documents justifying the enslavement of Yazidis as spoils of war, and activist Khider Domle has interviewed dozens of women and girls who have fled their captivity.

"Every time a woman escapes we learn more about how they are using Yazidi women," he said.

Domle said the women, especially those who end up in ISIS strongholds in Syria, tend to be traded or sold three or four times as fighters move to different locations and leave the women behind.

"Some are sold for weapons, or for just $10, or 10 cigarettes," Domle said.

The Holy War for Constantinople and The Clash of Islam and The West
Roger Crowley
Hachette Books, reprint, 2006
Hyperion, 2005
First, apologies for the inconsistent posting - busy time of year.
I'm sure the importance of the Bosphorus is well known to Rantburgers as the access from The Black Sea and The White Sea (Mediterranean) as well as The Middle East and Europe.

Before getting too far into this moment of history, it must be remarked, as Roger Crowley does, considering the sacking of Constantinople during The Fourth Crusade and the eventual transformation of Constantinople into the capital of the Ottoman Caliphate, that much of the information quoted is from second hand and/or spurious accounts. The players in this moment of history just really do not like each other, so one side's account of another can be skewed at the least.

And just who is involved can be best summarized in the prologue (page 6-7):

Modern nationalists have interpreted the siege of Constantinople as a struggle between Greek and Turkish peoples, but such simplifications are misleading. Neither side would have readily accepted or even understood these labels, though each used them of the other. The Ottomans, literally the tribe of Osmen, called themselves just that, or simply Muslims. "Turk" was a largely pejorative term applied by the nation states of the West, the name "Turkey" unknown to them until borrowed from Europe to create the new Republic in 1923. The Ottoman Empire in 1453 was already a multicultural creation that sucked in the peoples it conquered with little concern for ethnic identity. Its crack troops were Slavs, its leading general Greek, its admiral Bulgarian, its sultan probably half Serbian or Macedonian. Furthermore under the complex code of medieval vassalage, thousands of Christian troops accompanied him down the road from Edirne. The had come to conquer the Greek-speaking inhabitants of Constantinople, whom we now call the Byzantines, a word first used in English in 1853, exactly four hundred years after the great siege. They were considered to be heirs to the Roman Empire and referred to themselves accordingly as Romans. In turn they were commanded by an emperor who was half Serbian and a quarter Italian, and much of the defense undertaken by people from Western Europe whom the Byzantines call "Franks": Venetians, Genoese, and Catalans, aided by some ethnic Turks, Cretans - and one Scotsman. If it is difficult to fix simple identities or loyalties to the participants at the siege, there was one dimension of the struggle that all the contemporary chroniclers never forget - that of faith. The Muslims referred to their adversary as "the despicable infidels," "the wretched unbelievers," "the enemies of the Faith"; in response they were called "pagans," "heathen infidels," "the faithless Turks." Constantinople was the front line in a long distance struggle between Islam and Christianity for the true faith. It was a place where different versions of the truth had confronted each other in war and truce for 800 years, and it was here in the spring of 1453 that new and lasting attitudes between the two great monotheisms were to be cemented in one intense moment of history.

One of the differences between this siege and previous attempts was the use of cannons. Mr. Crowley gets into many of the conditions leading to the siege, including the casting of cannon (page 92):

When the furnace was judged to have reached the correct temperature, the foundry works started to throw copper into the crucible along with scrap bronze probably salvaged, by a bitter irony for the Christians, from church bells. The work was incredibly dangerous - the difficulty of hurling the metal piece by pie e into the bubbling cauldron and of skimming dross off the surface with metal ladles, the noxious fumes given off by the tin alloys, the risk that if the scrap metal were wet, the water would vaporize, rupturing the furnace and wiping out all close by - these hazards hedged the operation about with superstitious dread.

And details of the defenses (page 82):

The first line of the walls built in 413 deterred Attila the Hun, "the scourge of God," from making an attack on the city in 447. When it collapsed under a severe earthquake the same year with Attila ravaging Thrace not far away, the whole population responded to the crises. Sixteen thousand citizens totally rebuilt the wall in an astounding two months, not just restoring Anthemius's original structure, but adding an outer wall with a further string of inter spaced towers, a protecting breastwork, and a brick-lined moat - the fosse - to create a formidable barrier of extraordinary complexity (excellent sketch page 81).

And the mood of the people. Constantine XI was pro-union with the Papacy on account of increased security against the looming Ottoman expansion. The people were anti-papist for both dogmatic reasons as well as practical; is was under the banner of the Papacy when the westerners sacked Constantinople (Page 68):

The people were profoundly antipapist, "the wolf, the destroyer"; "Rum Papa," the Roman Pope, was a popular choice of name for city dogs. The citizens formed a volatile proletariat: impoverished, superstitious, easily swayed to riot and disorder.

Having the motivations and what is at stake of the four major sides - Byzantium, Ottoman, Venetian, and Papacy - is satisfying as the siege grinds, and grinds, and grinds.

Link is to Amazon's page for 1453.
The book is also published by Faber and Faber, 2005, as Constantinople: the Last Great Siege, 1453. Recommended.

#1  I meant to address a question from last week:

Were the oarsmen slaves? I know they weren't in the classical age, and I'd be surprised if they were any other time. OK -- not all that surprised if the Muslims used galley slaves.
-Rob Crawford

The short answer is - some were. Some would be convicts or debtors. Obviously an all volunteer crew is preferred, especially on a ship of war. The men must be fit, and I would think preferably with some experience on the sea. Run out of people who think the oarsman's life is the life for me! then those gaps must be filled.

Take some 350 ships at Lapanto, average 150 oarsmen/ship (I'm making these numbers up, my book is out) that is 52,500 physically able men - quite a number of people back in the day. And that does not include all the other shipping going on.

I will approach this next Books thread with Empires of the Sea. Everyone was involved, some entities more than others; Barbary Pirates for example were so successful they accumulated fleets but could not man the oars without slave raids on the European coast.

Even in the Age of Sail, impressment was well known practice and a key issue for the War of 1812. The Barbary Pirates, who were quite open about seizing ships and enslaving the crew for work or ransom, took the US To The Shores of Tripoli in 1805.

The Grand Turk
In the eye of the storm
[DAWN] Istanbul was calm, normal towards the end of last week as I spent 24 hours there while in transit. But reading local English-language newspapers another realisation hit home: how drastically The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
may have changed from the country of Mustafa Kemal Pasha's vision.

Mustafa Kemal, Ataturk (father of the Turks), visualised a democratic, secular society embracing modern values, Western attire and even the Roman script. He rose to power after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the First World War and believed the religion of Islam will be "elevated if it ceased being a political instrument" like it was in the past.

Today, some 90 years on, Turkey seems split down the middle among Islamists such as President Erdogan whose party is in power, and the fragmented secularists who failed to win a majority in the recent parliamentary elections.

Erdogan's critics believe he cynically manipulated the election result by provoking a confrontation with traditional Kurdish adversaries in its run-up and was able to galvanise support for his own party by spreading fear of what would happen if the other side won.

Whether this criticism is valid or not is for another day. What is clear is that Turkish society is divided into those who believe Erdogan offers a solution for all that is wrong with the country, and those who feel appalled that he is altering Ataturk's Turkey beyond recognition.

What happened at a football match over the past week, following the Gay Paree carnage carried out by the Death Eater Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, was utterly shocking. During a minute's silence to honour the memory of the Gay Paree victims, a section of the crowd raised 'Allah-o-Akbar' slogans.

This left many Turkish media commentators distressed. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
one of them pointed out in a column that it reflected what many have known in Turkey: that about a 10th of the country is sympathetic towards IS and supports it.

It seemed like yesterday Turkey was steaming towards membership of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, working hard at goals such as economic criteria and at bettering its human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
record. It was seen as an economic powerhouse knocking at EU's door. It seemed to be swallowing the bitter pill of making concessions to the Kurds.

But despite all its incredible hard work and the aspirations of not just its secular population, but also Islamist leaders such as Erdogan, as it approached the point where its request could be considered Ankara was blackballed by La Belle France's then right-wing president Nicolas Sarkozy
...23rd President of the French Republic. Sarkozy is married to singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, who has a really nice birthday suit...
. His reasons seemed less about economic and political concerns and more about the faith of a majority of Turks.

The spokesperson said the US coalition managed to destroy an ISIS military base in Kudela village in Makhmour and killed several ISIS bad boys.

Kudela village is 22km away from Makhmour town, considered as a critical point between linking the Peshmerga stockades with the areas that still under ISIS control.

ISIS positions are less than 20 kilometers from Makhmour. Due to the proximity, Peshmerga forces have strengthened security measures there.

Terror Networks
The etymological evolution of 'IS'
[DAWN] FOR governments, media outlets and academics the world over, a question continues to confound: what exactly do you call the bad boy outfit that currently controls considerable chunks of Iraq and Syria? What should it be out of IS/ISIS/ISIL/Daesh [Islamic State]?
In case you were wondering about the multiplicity of names...
We may ask what's in a name? But there are issues of political correctness, legitimacy and accuracy at stake: many in the international community -- especially in the Muslim world -- do not want to grant what is clearly a lethal terrorist outfit legitimacy by referring to what it calls itself in Arabic: ad-Dawlat al-Islamia, literally translated as 'the Islamic state'.

It may be helpful to recall what these multiple acronyms actually stand for. While the meaning of IS has been explained above, ISIS is the English translation of what the outfit called itself in Arabic before it transformed into a self-declared 'caliphate' in June of last year: ad-Dawlat al-Islamia fil Iraq was Shaam, or the Islamic State

Iraq
Iraqis find 3 more mass graves in formerly Daesh-held Sinjar
More on this story from yesterday.
Iraqi officials say three more mass graves have been found in the northern town of Sinjar, where Kurdish forces backed by US-led airstrikes drove out Daesh militants earlier this month.

Qasim Simo, the head of security in Sinjar, said on Sunday that the graves are believed to contain 80 to 100 bodies. Two graves have been found east of the town and one has been found within the town itself, bringing the total number of mass graves uncovered to five.

Daesh captured the town in August 2014 and began killing and enslaving members of the Yazidi religious minority, leading thousands of residents to flee into the mountains. A US-led coalition began carrying out strikes against the extremist group later that month, partly out of concern for their plight.

Arabia
16 dead in fighting for south Yemen province
Yemeni pro-government forces were battling on Sunday to oust Iran-backed Houthi rebels from a southern province where they have made gains in recent weeks. Ground fighting and air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition killed 12 rebels in Daleh province, military sources said. Four loyalists were also killed.

Daleh is one of five southern provinces which the coalition-backed loyalists retook from the rebels in a July offensive. But the Houthi rebels and their allies managed to recapture the province's second-largest city, Damt, earlier this month.

Further north, in Yemen's third city Taez, where a loyalist garrison has been under rebel siege for months, three civilians were killed and at least 20 wounded by rebel mortar fire late on Saturday, medical and military sources said. Loyalist troops and their coalition backers launched an offensive to try to break the siege earlier this month but it has made little headway.

In the rebel-held capital Sanaa, coalition aircraft carried out what a military source described as the heaviest strikes in weeks. The rebels overran Sanaa in September last year before capturing much of the rest of the country and forcing the government into exile.

Yemeni general promises 'surprises' in Taiz
Among the range of surprises we can assume are either Barky's resignation or Al Baghdadi does a pole dance on Al Jazeera
A Yemeni national resistance leader has promised surprises on the war front in the Southwestern Taiz governorate in the next few says, saying it would expedite its liberation from the Iranian-backed insurgents.

Brigadier Sadeq Serhan, chairman of the military council in Taiz, said the coalition-backed military operation to eject the Houthis out is progressing as planned.

Quoted by the Qatari ‘Al Jazeera’ news network, he said the national army and resistance fighters have seized many areas since their launched the liberation battle last week, including mainly Al Omari military camp, Wazeya and the strategic Dhabab town which is close to the vital Bab Al Mandeb waterway.

“There will be surprises in the next few days against the Houthis and their allies and I think they will accelerate the liberation process,” he said.

He accused the coup rebels of planting landmines in all areas which they have quit, adding that he believes Iranian military experts are helping and training them on mines.

He warned against calls by deposed President Ali Abdullah Saleh for a ceasefire, describing them as mere “manoeuvers”.

“He calls for stopping the war while at the same time he sends reinforcements and instructs tribe leaders loyal to him to mobilise their forces,” he said.

The general accused the coup rebels of committing war crimes by shelling civilian areas, besieging cities, blocking medicine and food supplies and raiding homes.

Europe
German police tackle mass brawl at Berlin refugee shelter
[AlAhram] Hundreds of refugees fought each other on Sunday in a mass brawl at a Berlin shelter and more than 100 police were called in to restore order, in an episode underlining the challenges Germany faces in handling hundreds of thousands of migrants. Although violent incidents in such centres are frequent,
Frequent? No wonder the natives are upset.
the chaos in the shelter at Berlin's disused Tempelhof airport, which erupted as lunch was being served, was worse than normal.

"There were apparently many hundreds of people involved," a front man for the police told Rooters TV. Police made an unspecified number of arrests.

Michael Elias, who is in charge of the shelter, said that 830 people were housed at the facility and that between 20 and 30 started the disruption.

"It's the simple fact that there are a lot of young men travelling alone here. We withdrew ... because the situation simply went kaboom!. It was a complete blow-out."

Such scenes feed scepticism among the German public about accepting refugees. Chancellor Angela Merkel

's popularity has slumped, a sign of the public's cooling attitude towards the influx of people fleeing conflict in countries like Syria.

Earlier this year, Germany's police union and women's rights groups accused the authorities of playing down reports of sexual assault and even rape at refugee shelters because they feared a backlash against asylum seekers.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere has called on Germans to avoid succumbing to blanket suspicion of migrants, of whom up to a million are expected to arrive this year.
An Nahar adds:

at the fight that started in the food distribution queues at the former airport of Tempelhof, which has been turned into a temporary accommodation for 1,200 refugees, an AFP photographer witnessed.

The brawl came just hours after another mass fight at a refugee shelter in the Berlin suburb of Spandau, where migrants went at each other with fire extinguishers, a police front man said. Windows were smashed, sofas were thrown, and fire extinguishers emptied, said police, adding that several residents of the shelter were maimed. Some 500 people evacuated the building "in fear and panic" over the dispute.

Separately, two other fights broke out in other shelters. At a refugee home in Berlin's Kreuzberg area, a 18-year-old struck a 17-year-old on the head with a belt, police said. Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Big Shirley was still trying to snatch Nunzio bald-headed. She was already halfway there...
five people were maimed in a fight between Syrians in the showers of an accommodation in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Such disturbances have occurred before in other shelters in Germany, with tensions escalating quickly between often traumatized people from different cultures sharing packed spaces.

How "relatively rare" could it be, if such incidents are "frequent", as Al Ahram reports?
given the sheer numbers of new arrivals -- Germany expects to take in a million asylum seekers this year alone, and has put up hundreds of thousands in flats, army barracks, sports halls and tent cities.

Germany's police union had called for refugees to be separated by religion and by country of origin to minimize the potential for conflict.

The Grand Turk
EU, Turkey Agree 3 Billion Euro Aid Deal to Stem Migrant Crisis
Danegeld.
[AnNahar] Turkey and the European Union agreed at a summit on Sunday on a "historic" three-billion-euro ($3.2 billion) aid deal to stem the flow of Syrian refugees and other migrants to Europe. Ankara's bid for membership of the EU will be kickstarted in return for its cooperation in preventing the 2.2 million Syrian refugees it hosts from coming to Europe, EU president Donald Tusk said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it was a "historic day" and vowed that his country would keep its promises, in the face of skepticism from some countries in the 28-member EU.
Real promises or hudna promises? This is the Turkish Muslim Brotherhood, after all.
"We expect a major step towards changing the rules of the game when it comes to stemming the migration flow that is coming to the EU via Turkey," Tusk told a press conference with Davutoglu and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker.

"We will also step up our assistance to Syrian refugees in Turkey through a new Refugee Facility of three billion euros," the former Polish premier added.

Turkey's progress in meeting the terms on the deal would be reviewed at least once a month, Tusk said. A long history of wariness between Brussels and Ankara, coupled with European concerns over human rights and Turkey's role in the Syrian conflict, including the shooting down of a Russian warplane in the last week, made the negotiations difficult.

- Rights issues 'not forgotten' -
Juncker insisted that the three billion euros "are not being given with no strings attached."

He also added that despite the deal "we have not forgotten the differences that still remain with Turkey over human rights and freedom of the press, and we will return to them."

Two Turkish journalists charged with "spying" over their reports about Ankara's alleged arms supplies to Syrian rebels had urged the EU on Saturday not to compromise on rights at the summit.

Davutoglu, who was standing in for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said the deal would "re-energize" Turkey's EU accession process, which has made little headway since it started in 2005.

"This is a historic day and a historic meeting, the first meeting of this kind since 11 years," the Turkish premier added.

"Turkey will be fulfilling all the promises of the joint plan," he said, adding that "this three billion euros is to be spent for refugees in Turkey, it's not for Turkey."

Turkey is the main gateway for migrants and refugees to reach Europe, and Germany has pushed for the summit as it is the main destination for most of the people arriving in the bloc.

- Turkey's EU bid boosted -
Under the agreement, Turkey will take steps including cracking down on people smugglers and cooperating with the EU on the return of people who do not qualify as refugees. Turkey will meanwhile get its wish for the acceleration of its bid for membership of the EU, with only one of 35 so-called "chapters" in the accession process completed in a decade of stop-start talks.

The EU agreed to open Chapter 17 of Turkey's accession process -- covering economic and monetary policy -- by mid-December. It also agreed to have two summits with Turkey each year. But the summit conclusions deliberately left future steps vague, saying that preparations for the opening of further chapters would start in the first three months of 2016, but dropping a mention of five chapters that had appeared in an earlier draft.

Brussels also committed to easing the rules for visas to visit the EU's Schengen passport-free area by October 2016, a major demand by Ankara.

The talks were complicated by resistance in particular by Cyprus, due to decades of tensions with Turkey on the divided east Mediterranean island.

The case for cooperation with Turkey comes against a backdrop of growing security concerns over the migrant crisis, especially after the November 13 attacks in Paris, claimed by the Islamic State group (IS), which left 130 people dead.

#3  you are kidding me

this is straight out of the playbook from Indonesia another Islamic nation.

Indonesia sent down scores of refugee boats to Australia causing chaos

We paid them money to stop them. they would reduce a bit then increase till we paid more.

until we got a Liberal government that turned back the boats and cut back the aid.

indonesia chucked a wobbly

but the boats dried up.

Turkey is just doing exactly the same as Indonesia. perhaps they learnt after HT members from Australia flew to Ankara - maybe they shared the wisdom.

anon1, what does "chucked a wobbly" mean? Has a nice ring. Is it similar to "had a cow" or "shit bricks?"

Twin explosions rock Quetta; no loss of life
QUETTA: Two low intensity blasts hit Chashma Achozai area close to the airport Saturday afternoon.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by miscreants went off in a deserted area close to the railway track, said officials. Security officials rushed to the site and cordoned off the area after the first explosion. As officials gathered to investigate the site, another blast took place close by. Police sources said there was no loss of life as a result of the twin blasts, which caused panic among people. Chashma Achozai is located on Quetta’s airport road and is considered a peaceful neighbourhood. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts.

Last month, a blast in a local bus killed at least 10 people, two of them children, on Quetta’s Sariab Road. Twenty-two people were injured in the incident, six of them seriously. Law-enforcement agencies have intensified their operations against terrorists in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan.
