Europe
Europe's coming civil war
By Donald Sensing

[SenseOfEvents] Michael Yon and I had a short but to the point discussion about this on FB back when the mass migration of Syrians and others started overland, by now a few months ago. We concluded that there was a real chance of civil war if the Euro governments didn't start listening to the European people,

And now this:
Society in western Europe is on the verge of breaking down amid chaotic violence caused by economic dislocation, mass immigration and terrorism. This is not the view of some 'crazy survivalist' but of the head of the Swiss Armed Forces.

Lieutenant-General Andreas Blattmann has issued a warning to the Swiss people that society is dangerously close to collapse and advised those not already armed as part of the Swiss Army reserve to take steps to arm themselves. Blattmann has been head of the Armed Forces since, 1 March 2009 and his words carry very significant weight in a country in which several Citizens' Initiative referenda against burqas and mosques have proven enormously popular as concerns grow about immigration and Islamisation.

Egyptian ambassador returns to Israel after 3-year hiatus
This will piss off Obama, Kerry, and ValJar. Ay-Pee
Egypt has sent a new ambassador to Israel after a three-year hiatus, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

Israel and Egypt signed a historic peace accord in 1979, but relations have often been cool.
Al-Sisi knows his countries; best interests
Egypt withdrew its ambassador in November 2012 to protest an Israeli offensive against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. At the time, Egypt was led by Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Since Morsi was ousted by the military in 2013, relations have steadily improved.
and degraded with our own MB-loving Preznit
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said Egypt's new ambassador, Hazem Khairat, arrived on Friday.

In September, Israel reopened its embassy in Cairo, four years after it was ransacked by a crowd protesting the deaths of five Egyptian policemen killed unintentionally by Israeli forces chasing a group of Gaza militants.

Nigel Farage believes his car was tampered with and he could have been the victim of an assassination attempt after a high speed crash on a motorway.

The Ukip leader's car left the road after one of the wheels on his Volvo came loose as he was driving back to Kent from Brussels, according to the Mail on Sunday. The police told him that the nuts on all his wheels had been deliberately unscrewed.

The Grand Turk
ISIS oil trucks cross into Turkey every day, captured terrorist admits
[RT] A captured Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
turban who spoke to Sputnik news agency has bolstered claims that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
is involved in illegal oil deals with the jihadist group up to the hilt.

24-year-old Mahmud Ghazi Tatar says he joined Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) from the Turkish city of Adiyaman. Together with other recruits, he was transported over the border into Syria where he received terrorist training.

Having taken part in the civil war in Syria, he was captured by Kurdish forces last June and is now imprisoned.

RT obtained interview footage with the captive from Sputnik news agency. In it, the former IS fighter reveals details about Turkey's alleged oil links to the terror group.

"At the training camp in May 2015, our commander told us that the group sells fuel to Turkey. That income covers Islamic State's costs. The oil trucks crossing into Turkey every day carry crude oil, as well as petrol," Tatar said, adding that the Islamic group has "enough oil to last them a long time."

In the words of Tatar's commander, the oil is being sold via several businessmen and traders, although their names were not disclosed.

"ISIL also receives lots of supplies from Turkey and Arab countries," the captured turban said.

Turkey strongly denies that it has links to the terrorists.

ISIS's black market oil trade has come under scrutiny from the international community amid turbulent oil prices, which have fallen to half their previous level in 2015.

Crude oil extracted at Syria's Deir ez-Zor and Iraq's Qayyara oil fields, which remain under under Islamic State control, is being sold for as little as $25 per barrel to smugglers, independent Syrian and Iraqi traders who transport oil using their own trucks.

The crude oil could also be sold to nearby refineries that produce petrol and fuel oil, or directly to the local oil market.

Yet the capacity of local buyers is limited, so smuggling oil to Turkey and other countries is more profitable.

"Turkey is playing not a very clean game, especially with smuggling the Iraqi oil and Syrian oil through the borders and selling it in the black market in Turkey," Iraqi MP Mowaffak Al-Rubaie, a former national security adviser, told RT, adding that a recent investigation by the Norwegian authorities exposed Turkey as having ties with Islamic State's illegal oil trade.

Afghan forces free 59 prisoners from Taliban jail in south
[Daily Excelsior] Afghan special forces freed 59 prisoners from a Taliban jail in Helmand, officials said today, as government troops redouble their efforts to drive back the insurgents who have seized large parts of the volatile southern province.

Islamist militants have launched a series of attacks in the capital, Kabul, in recent weeks and a tough fight is underway in key districts in the south, just as attempts have been made to revive a stalled peace process.

Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said 37 of the captives freed from the jail, which was just to the north of the Helmand provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, were soldiers.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia executes prominent Shiite cleric, 46 others in 12 cities
Prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr was among 47 people executed by Saudi Arabia on Saturday, triggering an angry response from across the Shiite world, including the kingdom’s archenemy, Iran.

The official Saudi Press Agency listed Nimr’s name among 47 people who were executed on Saturday morning in the capital Riyadh and 12 other cities. Some were beheaded, others were killed by firing squads, according to Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry. Nimr, 56, was a key figure in the protests that erupted among Sunni Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority in 2011, inspired by the Arab spring revolts elsewhere in the region.

The execution risks stirring renewed unrest among Shiites in the kingdom, and drew an immediate harsh response from Iran, which has warned in the past that carrying out the death sentence on Nimr could cost Saudi Arabia dearly.

It could also ignite unrest in neighboring Bahrain, where widespread protests among the country’s Shiite majority against the Sunni royal family were quelled by Saudi military intervention in 2011. Police in Bahrain fired tear gas to disperse several dozen people who took to the streets to protest the execution in a village west of the capital Manama, Reuters reported, citing eyewitnesses.

Nimr was arrested by Saudi security forces in 2012, after being shot in the legs during a car chase in the mostly Shiite eastern province of Qatif, where the protests had been concentrated. He had been charged with “instigating unrest and undermining the kingdom’s security,” as well as delivering speeches against the government and defending political prisoners.

Most of the 47 executed on Saturday had been convicted for participating in Al Qaeda related attacks in the past decade, the Associated Press said. Two were citizens of Egypt and Chad, and the rest were Saudi nationals.

Suicide bomber kills three in Mogadishu restaurant attack
[STUFF.CO.NZ] A jacket wallah attacked a popular restaurant in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, on Saturday (Sunday NZ Time), killing himself and at least three others, Somali police said.

The attacker, dressed in a business suit over a boom jacket, detonated the bomb after entering the Village Restaurant, which is opposite Somalia's National Theatre, police said.

"So far, three civilians are dead," Major Nur Ali, a police brass hat, told Rooters.

In comments on state radio, Somalia's information minister, Mohammed Abdi Hayir, blamed the attack on al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
, the al Qaeda-aligned Islamist holy warriors who wage frequent attacks in the capital as part of a campaign to bring down the Western-backed Somali government.

"The al-Shabaab suicide bomber did not cause many casualties," he said, adding that most of the people in the restaurant were able to escape before the bomb exploded.

A front man for the group could not be reached for comment.

Saturday's (Sunday NZT) attack marked the third time suicide bombers have attacked the restaurant,

On Friday (Saturday NZT), al-Shabaab holy warriors attacked a cop shoppe in the capital, and police said that three of them were killed. Police showed journalists pictures of the dead, but al-Shabaab denied they had lost anyone in the attack.
An Nahar adds:
The attack targeted the Village Restaurant, an eatery in the south of the city popular with journalists and government officials.

Mir was wanted by Sopore police for killing of a former holy warrior, Bashir Ahmad and his three year old son Burhan Ahmad in September last year. The killing of the duo led to widespread condemnations by both separatists and mainstream political parties.

A case (FIR No 70/2015 u/s 302. 307 RPC) was registered against snuffies for killing the duo and police started investigations and today arrested Mir.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
in South Kashmire's Pulwama district, after days of violent protests against the holy warrior killings, police arrested 10 youths accused of being behind the stone-throwing incidents. The parts of the district continued to shut for the third day amid incidents of stone-pelting.

Six youth were arrested from Pulwama Town while 4 were held from Kakapora hamlet of the district in overnight raids. "The youths are involved in violent protests and that is why they have been arrested," said a senior police official. He said the arrested youth were also behind the attempts to install the insignia in the memory of slain snuffies which was, however, foiled by police.

The police official made it clear that they won't allow the installation of any holy warrior memorial in the Town. "This is against law and shall not be allowed at any cost," he added.

Pulwama is on boil since more than a week over the back-to-back killings of snuffies in twin shootouts.

Besides spontaneous shutdowns, the district areas witnessed large-scale violent stone-throwing protests. The stone-throwing left dozens of cops and protesters injured.

Meanwhile,

shutdown was observed in the district for the third day. During the shutdown, festivities erupted in several areas while the protesters also stoned vehicles defying strike. However,

police said the overall situation remained peaceful in district and there was no major violence.

Militants' calls to Pak intercepted
[Daily Excelsior] Four terrorists, who struck at IAF base in Pathankot early today, had interacted with their handlers in Pakistain and family members after entering into the Indian territory from the International Border through the mobile telephones.

"We are about to enter, we are entering, we have split, we are successful in entering," one of the bandidos snuffies told his handler in Pakistain on the telephone. The Intelligence agencies had intercepted the conversation. They had intercepted four international calls to Pakistain from Bamiyal border area of Pathankot.

The Handler replied: "Good, Keep on posting us, reach your target''.

Another terrorist spoke to his family members: "I'm going to give my life''.

The Family member replied: "Eat your food and then do what you are there for''.

Sources said the conversation between murderous Moslem and his family indicated that his family members were aware of their kin's notorious plans.

The bandidos snuffies were in regular touch with their Pak handlers, who even arranged a taxi for them by calling from a mobile number of that country, sources said.

Sources said the bandidos snuffies had first used a Toyota Innova vehicle yesterday and it has been found that the driver was called from a Pakistain number.

Security agencies are verifying with the driver's family to find out whether he (driver) had been offering regular services to Pakistain-based smugglers, who have links with the terrorists, or was it a case of him not realising that it was a Pakistain number.

The driver of the Innova was called to a particular spot near Pathankot where the bandidos snuffies boarded the vehicle.

The sources said that the car was used for travelling on an untarred road and dumped after a while as the rim of the vehicle got damaged.

The terrorist then hijacked an SUV (Mahindra SUV X500) in which a Superintendent of Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Police was travelling along with a friend and a cook.

The SP and the cook were forced to leave the vehicle while the friend, a jeweller, was taken as hostage.

The bandidos snuffies snatched a mobile phone from them and used it to dial the number in Pakistain which was used to call the driver of the Toyota Innova. From this number, they had called their handlers thrice and once to a family member who was told that they were on a suicide mission.

Security agencies have found that from the Pak mobile number, the handlers were actively giving the directions to the terrorists.

Since the Pak number was under surveillance, security agencies were able to find out the possible target of the terrorists, leading to dispatching of 160 NSG commandos, Army special forces besides others.

Enemies of humanity carried out attack in Pathankot: Modi
[Daily Excelsior] Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said "enemies of humanity" who could not digest India's progress carried out the attack in Pathankot.

Modi assured that the defence forces had the strength to defeat "the evil designs of our enemy."

"...Our security forces did not let them succeed: Proud of our jawans and security forces," he said here, referring to Pak terrorists'pre-dawn strike at the Indian Air Force base at Pathankot in Punjab.

The fierce gunbattle claimed the lives of three securitymen, while five infiltrators were killed, with the terror strike coming days after Modi's surprise stopover in Lahore in signs of thawing of relations with Pakistain.

"Today, enemies of humanity who can't see India progress tried to strike at our strategic area, a prominent airbase at Pathankot. I appreciate our armed forces and thank them for foiling our enemy's attempt," Modi said, adding "our security forces did not let them succeed."

"I want to assure our countrymen that our armed forces have the strength to defeat the evil designs of our enemy," he said.

Congratulating the armed forces "who are always ready to protect the country", he said if the country speaks out with unity, the "illwill of our enemies will get destroyed."

"I feel proud of our armed forces", said the Prime Minister in his speech at the birth centenary celebrations of Dr.Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji of Suttur Mutt which runs a string of educational institutions benefitting nearly a lakh students.

In his speech at the event, Modi said the 21st century is the century of knowledge.

"The one with more knowledge and information will influence the world", he said.

It is the saints who have understood what the 21st century is about, said the Prime Minister as he laid the foundation for a Knowledge Resource Centre at the Mutt. "...Rishis, saints, seers, Mutts... They have done so much for society. Sadly, some people have only believed in criticising," Modi said.

"These saints, seers...They overcame so much opposition and ensured evils were removed from society: Whenever the need came, a new strength always emerged from our society...," Modi said.

Speaking at another event, Modi said work of saints, seers and rishis had always been for the welfare of society. The seers and saints do not tomtom about their efforts as they feel it was part of their duty to work for the welfare of the society, he said during his visit to Avadhoota Datta Peetham, an ashram founded by Sree Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji, here, which is engaged in spiritual and welfare activities.

Modi, on a two-day visit to Karnataka, will inaugurate the annual Indian Science Congress here tomorrow as part of his engagements that also include laying the foundation stone for a helicopter manufacturing facility of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in Tumkuru district tomorrow.

ISIS executes 15 rebel prisoners
[ARA] ERBIL – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) executed on Saturday at least 15 rebel fighters from the Jaish al-Thuwar group in Syria’s northeastern province of Raqqa, military sources reported.

Rebels of Jaish al-Thuwar fight under the umbrella of the western–backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) –the most powerful Kurdish-Arab coalition fighting against the ISIS terror group in northern Syria.

ISIS militants had taken dozens of SDF fighters as hostages subsequent to clashes in the northern countryside of Raqqa.

“At least 15 fighters from the Jaish al-Thuwar rebel group were beheaded at the hands of ISIS terrorists on Saturday,” a spokesman for the SDF confirmed in an interview with ARA News.

“ISIS tries to intimidate the SDF forces by such actions, especially after our units have made remarkable gains against the terror group in Hasakah and the northern countrysides of Raqqa and Aleppo,” he said.

“Our message to those barbarians is that nothing can stop our progress, and we will soon eliminate the terror group from the Syrian soil.”

The radical group of the Islamic State had taken more than 40 rebel fighters of Jaish al-Thuwar as hostages last week, most of them were captured during clashes with the SDF units in the vicinity of Ain Issa town north of Raqqa.

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) include Kurdish units of the YPG and YPJ, the Syriac Military Council, the Arab tribal group of al-Sanadeed, al-Jazeera brigades, Jaish al-Thuwar group and Burkan al-Furat battalion. The SDF has recaptured more than 220 towns and villages in Hasakah province over two months since its establishment. After announcing a new anti-terror campaign two weeks ago, the alliance regained control of several strategic areas in the northern countrysides of Raqqa and Aleppo.

Fierce Fighting Erupts Between Afghan Forces, Taliban In Marjah
Heavy clashes have erupted between Taliban insurgents and the Afghan forces in Marjah district of southern Helmand province.

Some reports indicate the Taliban has seized control of several parts of the province.

Security forces battling the Taliban on the front line have said that the Taliban has forced residents in Marjah to evacuate their homes and that the group has planted mines on the roads.

"We shoot even a motorbike if we feel it is suspicious," a police officer in Marjah Nazuk Mir said.

Security officials have said that the planting of mines is posing a serious threat to the security forces.

"war always keep going on, but closely monitor movements of the enemy regularly during day and night," another officer said.

It is said that the Taliban has taken up positions inside residential areas to target Afghan troops.

"We have always given severe response to Taliban in the warfronts, Taliban will never get victory," another officer said.

3 ISIS Bad Guys die in Kurdisg raid in Raqqa
[ARA] TEL ABYAD – Three militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed on Saturday in a raid by the Kurdish security forces of the Asayish in the Syrian border city of Tel Abyad north of Raqqa.

The Asayish forces raided several houses in Tel Abyad, searching for ISIS suspects.

“Three terrorists were killed in a security raid by our forces in the city of Tel Abyad. When they tried to resist, clashes broke out and they were eventually killed,” the Asayish leadership said in a statement on Saturday.

“They had infiltrated into the city to launch suicide attacks,” it added.

On Wednesday, a group of ISIS militants attacked the Kurdish forces in Tel Abyad and bombed a security center there.

“A group of ISIS terrorists infiltrated into Tel Abyad and detonated explosives inside a building for the Asayish security forces. The explosion caused a large destruction in the building and claimed lives of several Kurdish forces,” a spokesman for the Asayish told ARA News, adding: “Three ISIS terrorists were killed in clashes that broke out subsequent to the attack and two others were arrested, while the rest escaped the city towards Raqqa.”

The Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) recaptured the strategic city of Tel Abyad on the border with Turkey in June, subsequent to fierce battles against ISIS militants. Since then, the Kurdish security force of the Asayish has been running the city together with a local civil administration.

Home Front: WoT
Suspect in New York attack plot is a ‘panhandler’
[IsraelTimes] Owner of bar says ex-convict who planned to carry out terrorist act on New Year's Eve had been asked to leave in past

An ex-convict placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in a plot to carry out an attack at a bar on New Year's Eve is a panhandler who'd been asked to leave the tavern in the past, its owner said, while the man's family said he had a long history of mental problems.

Federal authorities have said Emanuel Lutchman, 25, sought to prove he was worthy of joining the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group by leading an attack in Rochester with a machete and knives provided by an FBI informant.

After authorities announced his arrest Thursday, his father and mother described a man who'd had psychiatric troubles since childhood, had recently stabbed himself in a suicide attempt and, they said, wouldn't have conducted the attack on his own.

"The boy is impressionable," his father, Omar Lutchman, told NBC News. "First he was a Blood, then he was a Crip, then he became a Muslim. He's easily manipulated."

The father and the suspect's grandmother, Beverley Carridice, told the network that Lutchman is married and has a 2-year-old son but had been having marital problems.

Authorities said in court papers that Lutchman said he received direction from an overseas Islamic State group member and planned to carry out the attack Thursday.

"I will take a life, I don't have a problem with that," the court papers quoted Lutchman as saying.

Lutchman's lawyer, Steven Slawinski, declined to comment on the allegations. Lutchman has been charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

While authorities didn't identify the target, a co-owner said it was Merchants Grill, a neighborhood sports pub. The US attorney's office for western New York did not return a phone call Friday seeking confirmation of that. Lutchman lived nearby and had repeatedly come into the bar asking for money, co-owner John Page told local media. He told WEHC-TV that Lutchman had been asked to leave several times.

He "caused more trouble than positive," Page told the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester.

Lutchman was described in court papers as having a long criminal history, including a 2006 robbery conviction that led to a five-year prison sentence.

Lutchman's former stepmother, Charma Lutchman, told the Democrat and Chronicle that Lutchman spent part of his childhood living with his grandparents in New York City. She said that while young, he was struck by a car, an accident that transformed him from a happy-go-lucky boy to a more withdrawn child.

"He wasn't the same boy I knew after he got hit by a car," she said. "He was different, more quiet."

The newspaper reports Lutchman spent four months in a Rochester jail in 2015 on misdemeanor charges of petit larceny and menacing his girlfriend.

Lutchman was scheduled to appear in state court Jan. 11 on the domestic violence charges. It's likely that date will be postponed.

'Mugger' shot dead by police, family claims shootout was fake
[DAWN] An alleged mugger was rubbed out and another injured by the local police near Khyaban-e-Jami area of the metropolis on Saturday, in a shootout that was described as 'fake' by the victim's family.

According to SHO Latif, the complainant Ahsan Salim was standing outside his residence with his friends when two men on a cycle of violence came and snatched their phones and money.

Salim and his friends chased the muggers in their car and solicited the help of a police mobile they ran into on the way. The police, along with the complainant, finally intercepted the two alleged muggers near Khyaban-e-Jami.

In a proceeding shootout, one of the two alleged robbers was rubbed out.

SHO Latif added that the suspect had recently been deported from Malaysia on December 22, where he had been living illegally on an expired visit visa.

Police officials recovered the cell phones and cash from the second man's custody, and confirmed that the belonging were of Salim and his friends.

According to the police, the robber was a resident of Lyari

Rudaw has learned that the raid was on the ISIS cop shoppe in Hawija and it lasted two hours.

Brigadier Sarhad Qadir of the Kirkuk suburban police said that a few such small raids by Kurdish and coalition commandos have been conducted in recent weeks.

Hawija is 55 Km southwest of Kirkuk and is considered an ISIS stronghold.

The biggest and first such raid against the radical group took place in October where US and Kurdish commandos stromed and ISIS jail and freed 70 hostages.

Late last month a similar raid against a courthouse of the Islamic group in the town of Riyad also led to the killing of several krazed killers.

Dere goes da Judge: ISIS jurist dies in US airstrike
[ARA] ERBIL – U.S. air force conducted a new airstrike on the Iraqi city of Tel Afar, killing head of the ISIS-led Sharia Court and other militants of the radical group of Islamic State in the city, a security source confirmed on Saturday.

Hisham Hussein Shakhbalar al-Afri, leading member of ISIS and head of the Sharia Court in Tel Afar, was reported dead along with Taha Muhammad Nur Qazzan, chief of al-Hisba branch, in a U.S.-led airstrike, an Iraqi security source told ARA News.

Dozens of civilians die in airstrikes in Palmyra
[ARA] DAMASCUS – Syrian regime’s air force hit the ancient city of Palmyra with dozens of airstrikes, killing and wounding dozens of civilians, activists reported on Saturday.

Local sources said that Syrian warplanes bombed residential neighborhoods in central Palmyra.

“At least 13 civilians were killed and 20 more wounded in renewed airstrikes by Syrian warplanes,” media activist Samir al-Homsi told ARA News.

The historical city of Palmyra has been under the control of Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants since May, when the group stormed headquarters of the Syrian army and seized the whole city subsequent to fierce clashes.

“The Syrian regime claims that its warplanes are targeting ISIS positions in Palmyra; however, the strikes mostly hit residential buildings causing civilian casualties and destruction to private property,” al-Homsi said.

The recent airstrikes have also led to the destruction of parts of the ancient citadel in Palmyra and some historical monuments in the Jaalak square east of the city, according to local activists.

Militia groups take over wildlife refuge building in Oregon
Hope those fellas know what they are doing. Rumor is the FBI have moved their HRT teams in. I thought this was s'posed to be an armed protest.
Bundy and his supporters were in Oregon after two men were scheduled to go to prison on Monday for setting fires on federal land, according to a report by Oregon Public Broadcasting. The case has caused a stir in eastern Oregon because the two men were charged under anti-terrorism laws.

The two men, Dwight and Steve Hammond, appealed their cases multiple times, the report stated. They were required to report to prison on Monday.

The militia groups say the Hammond's were illegally prosecuted for setting what they claim was a controlled fire because the federal government has no authority at the county level.

"The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds," Ammon Bundy told the Oregonian.

Cliven Bundy, a rancher who engaged in an armed standoff with federal officials due to a dispute he had with the Bureau of Land Management, was not present.

Local MSM report on the incident.

Mike Vanderboegh has been critical of several of the individuals involved, saying that the blowback will hurt every Threeper and patriot. I withhold my judgement.

The name is derived from the fact that only three percent of the population of the colonies actually fought the British during the American Revolutionary War back in the 1770s.

Harney county, Oregon update: I just got off the phone with Blaine (Cooper) who is AT the wildlife refuge. To dispel any rumors, this is a vetted update. There is NO hostile takeover. The land and building is public, and there are NO, do not trespass signs, or hours of operation posted. The doors were NOT locked. There is NO armed standoff at this time. They are simply occupying a building owned by We The People. Many of the town folk work for BLM, hence the problem. Most town folk are also very supportive of the Hammonds. This is a peaceful protest, and is following a redress of grievances with thousands of signatures. For all other vetted info, see the Bundy Ranch Facebook page. Ammon is on scene in Oregon. #6  #1 and #2 are on it - too many bowl games and at unwatchable times if you have a job

There's another dimension to this as well. 85 percent of bowl games this year are on ESPN or ESPN 2 cable channels. That is cutting out a large portion of your potential audience.

It seems to me that ABC is trying to up its carry fees for cable operators by restricting good/pivotal games to cable and lesser games on broadcast. Seems to me you can screw your audience for so long until they find something else to watch.

Even if bowl games were on during the week, which they have been in the run up to the BCS showing them on cable is a losing deal.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Queens teenager Jihad Jackson fatally shot in Jamaica, is last murder victim of 2015 in New York City
[NYDAILYNEWS] Somehow that's just ever so appropriate.
A Queens mom spoke to her 16-year-old son by phone about 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, telling him to stay inside. “He said that he would,” a tearful Marguerite Tolson-Jackson, 52, told the Daily News.
Lied through his teeth, did he?
It was the last time she would hear her boy’s voice. The teen went to hang out with friends and was fatally shot in the neck around 11:30 p.m. Thursday near a pal’s home at Merrick Blvd. and 109th Ave. in Jamaica.
Now that I think about it, I've never had a "pal" like that.
Jihad Jackson became the last murder victim of 2015, a year that saw a 4.5% increase — from 333 to 348 — in homicides. It was the first time the number of murders increased from year to year in New York since 2010. There were 471 homicides in 2009 and 536 in 2010 — a spike of 13.8%. The police questioned two men in connection with Jackson’s murder, but no arrests have been made. The motive was still unclear late Friday.
He had a neck, they had a bullet?
Jackson, his parents and siblings had taken a bus to Washington, D.C., for a two-week visit to celebrate his older brother’s birthday. But the teen grew bored and homesick and begged his mom to let him come back to New York. He left on a return bus Thursday, and was supposed to go straight to his house in Rosedale. Instead, he went to the friend’s house where he had his final phone conversation with his mom. “I just told him to stay inside,” Tolson-Jackson told The News.
You can't even ridicule this mess. It comes pre-ridiculed.
Jackson, a junior at Law Enforcement High School,
He was meant to become a policeman? That's a tragedy.
later sent Snapchat photos to his cousin in D.C. He seemed at ease, sporting a green hoodie, jeans and a pair of Timberlands he’d gotten as a Christmas gift.

Two IAF men killed as gunmen storm Indian air force base, Pakistan condemns attack
[DAWN] An operation to secure a bad boy-hit Indian air base near the Pakistain border ended on Saturday with at least four suspected gunnies killed, police said, after an assault that threatens to undermine the two countries' fragile grinding of the peace processor.
We had this yesterday. Jaish-e-Mohammad is a Pak govt proxy. Modi was in Islamabad on Christmas day. This is the usual response to anything like peace or reconciliation.

state at around 3:30 am.

Officials did not confirm the state broadcaster's reports that three security personnel had died at the base -- a rare targeting of an Indian military installation outside disputed Kashmire.

Special commandos secured the Pathankot air force base 14 hours after it was infiltrated by gunnies wearing Indian army uniforms, officials said.

"We have recovered four dead bodies and are searching for more. Our men are sanitising the area," H. S. Dhillon, a senior police chief for the Punjab region told AFP.

An army official confirmed the operation had ended and forces were checking the area for residual explosives.

Iraq
ISIS suicide bombers attack Iraqi forces at base near Ramadi
[CNN] Three Iraqi soldiers were killed and 17 maimed Friday when ISIS hard boys, driving 10 vehicles packed with explosives, attacked an Iraqi army base near Ramadi.

The head of the Anbar Provincial Council, Sabah Al-Karhut, told CNN the attacks happened in quick succession. He said the 10 vehicles targeted the Iraqi army's 10th Division base northeast of Ramadi.

Even though Iraqi forces have managed to drive ISIS jihadists out of the center of Ramadi, local tribal leaders said this week that ISIS still controls as much as 25% of the city, and significant pockets of ISIS resistance remain.

Still, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi visited the bombed-out city this week, raising the Iraqi flag and declaring that 2016 "will be the year we drive ISIS out of Iraq."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Gush Etzion residents have electricity cut off in suspicious circumstances
[Ynet] Various settlements in Gush Etzion in the West Bank had their electricity cut off for six hours on New Year's Eve. An initial inspection revealed that a wire with stone was thrown at a power line in a Paleostinian village, damaging it.

Suspicion was aroused on Friday of intentional damage to electricity power lines in the West Bank, after residents in several Gush Etzion settlements had their electricity cut off for six hours overnight on New Year's Eve.

The Israel Electric Corporation claimed that the electricity line had been damaged on purpose, and the IDF is looking into the matter.

An initial investigation revealed that in a Paleostinian village nearby, a wire with a stone had been thrown at a power line that provides electricity to Jewish settlements in the area. This apparently caused the power to be cut off, and repair teams that arrived on Friday morning to fix the outage realized that the blackout was not accidental.

Among the settlements cut off from Thursday night until Friday morning were Tekoa, Kfar Eldad, Nokdim and Sde Bar.

"We didn't know how we would cook for Shabbat. Families were considering whether to leave the settlement and spend Shabbat elsewhere for fear that they would stay with young children in a house with no electricity during stormy weather," said Marina Berger from Tekoa.

On Friday morning, staff repaired the damaged part of the line and electricity returned to the affected settlements. However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
despite the repair, minor outages were still being reported on Friday.

Afghanistan
4 terrorists killed in premature truck bombing in Herat
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four bombers were killed after they were blown up by own explosives in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province of Afghanistan, it has been reported.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) said the four bombers were looking to carry out a coordinated attack using a truck packed with explosives in Herat province.

A statement by MoI said the snuffies were on their way towards Shindand province to execute the attack when the truck packed with explosives went off in Zer-e-Koh area.

The statement further added that the kaboom did not incur any casualties to the civilians or members of the security forces and only four bad boyz were potted.

No group including the Talibs has so far grabbed credit behind the incident.

Herat is among the relatively volatile provinces in western Afghanistan where anti-government armed forces of Evil are actively operating in a number of its remote districts.

This comes as the insurgency activities by the anti-government armed murderous Moslem groups have been rampant during the recent months across the country including capital Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
The Taliban group has carried out two suicide kabooms in the capital within the past one week, leaving at least three people dead and scores of others maimed.

At least two non-combatants were killed and 18 others were maimed in the latest attack on a resturant in Kabul city on Friday evening.

Pakistan's COAS says 2016 would be last year of terrorism in his country
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Pakistain's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif
..Pak chief of army staff, meaning he pulls the strings on the Nawaz Sharif puppet to make it dance and sing and not do much at all....

"The new year will be the year when terrorism will end," he said during an address to the elders of Gwadar, Talar and Turbat areas of Makran division.

According to Pakistain's Dawn news, Gen. Sharif added during his speech that the nation would witness the birth of peace and justice in the year.

"Peace and justice will be ensured across the country with the support of the nation."

Regarding the restive province of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
where separatists have been fighting for autonomy independence, the army chief said that it would be turned into a peaceful province.

"Pakistain is on way to success and happiness and the people of Balochistan will also benefit from this," he said.

This comes as Pakistain has opened a new phase of talks with its neighbors India and Afghanistan on solving regional issues.

But the terrorist attack on an Indian Air Force base in India on Saturday might again affect ties between the two countries.

The Arab world is a house with no roof
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Generations after political emancipation from direct colonial rule and overt western influence, the quest for genuine political independence, democratization and cultural authenticity in many majority Arab states is still unfulfilled. The abject failures of decades of experimentation with controlled liberalization, Arab and local nationalisms, and Arab socialism in the 1950's and 60's and with Political Islam in its various forms since the 1967 defeat in the war with Israel, were shockingly confirmed by the Arab uprisings of recent years.

The end of colonial rule was the beginning of the era of strong men, usually lower ranking military officers (Nasser in Egypt, Qadaffy in Libya), and the rise of repressive, chauvinistic nationalisms (especially the Baath in Syria and Iraq). The Islamist movements, beginning with the oldest one, the Moslem Brüderbund (established in Egypt in 1928) and the movements it spawned in subsequent decades shared the same illiberal characteristics of the Arab Nationalists and Socialists. In fact illiberal governance is the thread that connects that amorphous universe we call the Arab world.

#1  "...The German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche who had strong negative views of Judaism and Christianity and contradictory views of Islam, nonetheless made a striking comment about the 'wonderful world of the Moorish culture of Spain', and he found it admirable that Islam 'said Yes to life even with the rare and refined luxuries of Moorish life.' From this perspective, there is no greatness is asceticism, or in fake religious puritanism or in fear of the material world. Yes to life."

Nietzche was impressed with how he thought the high culture of 11th and 12th century Cordova enjoyed the luxuries without worrying about compliance with religious dos and don'ts. I think Al Arabiya doesn't understand that.

The Grand Turk
Turkey and Israel need each other, says President Erdoğan
[Hurriyet] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Israel are two countries in the Middle East that need each other, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
"Israel is in need of a country like Turkey in the region. We have to admit that we also need Israel," Erdogan said on his return from an official trip to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Speaking to a group of journalists aboard the presidential plane returning to Turkey from Riyadh, where he met with Saudi King Salman
...either the largest species of Pacific salmon or the current Sheikh of the Burnin' Sands, Cutodian of the Two Holy Mosquesand Lord of Most of the Arabians....
bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, Erdogan said the mutual need "is a fact of the region."

"We need to see that. If we can take steps in reciprocal sincerity, then normalization will continue," he added.

Relations with Israel have been tense since May 31, 2010, when Israeli forces raided a Gazoo-bound flotilla of mainly Turkish activists, killing 10 people aboard the Mavi Marmara, the largest of the six vessels in the flotilla.

Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin said on Dec. 28, 2015, progress was made with Israel on the issue of compensation for Mavi Marmara victims, adding that Turkey had not changed its three conditions for normalization of ties between the two countries:

"There has been progress made about the second condition, the one with compensation, but we have not reached a point where we can ink it," Kalin told news hounds at a presser.

He said Israel has met first condition by apologizing to Turkey, and added that two more demands were still on the table: Compensation for Mavi Marmara victims and the "lift or bend" of an embargo implemented by Israel on Gazoo Strip.

Erdogan reiterated Turkey's stance.

"On the embargo, they [Israel] said 'goods, construction equipment can enter [Gazoo] via Turkey.' We will wait for the written text so that they do not back down," said Erdogan, adding that another important point for Turkey is the Israeli aggression on Al Aqsa Mosque.
Sneaking in a fourth condition? How terribly clever, and surely Israel will not notice.
'Kurdish strip' in Syria not acceptable
In addition, the president said Ankara would "not allow a Kurdish strip" to be formed in northern Syria.
Another thing to discuss with Russia, it appears. Good luck with that.
"Jerablus was one of our targets there in order to clear the region of Daesh [Islamic State]," said Erdogan, using an Arabic acronym for ISIL, referring to the Kurdish People's Protection Units' (YPG) possible crossing to the west of the Euphrates after Syrian Kurdish and Arab rebel forces backed by a U.S.-led coalition captured part of the Tishrin Dam.

"Watching the YPG come to that place is unacceptable. We will hold a meeting.
Golly -- a meeting. With who?
[If we allow the YPG to cross to the west of Euphrates], a Kurdish strip will be formed to the south of us and in the north of Syria. We cannot say 'yes' to this," he added.

No let-up in executions
[DAWN] SUCCESSFUL as 2015 was on many fronts in the fight to stabilise the country and restore internal peace, there was one especially grim statistic: following first the partial and then the complete lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty, 333 individuals were hanged to death last year. As a report compiled by Dawn.com has shown, the record executions in Pakistain were only exceeded by Iran and China. None of the three countries, and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, which executed the fourth highest number of people, has a judicial system that inspires confidence or is a model that other states want to emulate. From the standpoint of justice, it is not an enviable company of nations. Yet, the state here appears to show no intention of slowing down. The new year has begun with the ISPR announcing that the army chief has ratified the death sentences of nine more individuals convicted by the military. The crimes that the men allegedly belonging to various Death Eater groups have been convicted of are clearly of a very serious nature. But the opaqueness of the trials and the sentences handed down do not meet the standards of justice -- the fight against militancy can and should be won without the dubious crutch that is the death penalty.

As documented over the course of the last year, the reinstatement of the death penalty in the country had little to do with terrorism -- the overwhelming majority of the men hanged had no Death Eater, terrorist or bully boy affiliation. Moreover, there is no evidence whatsoever that the reinstatement of the death penalty has acted as a deterrent. While militancy and terrorism were markedly lower last year, military and government officials themselves routinely credited the reduction to military operations in Fata and counterterrorism actions across the country. It is not just the direct effect -- while more than 30 individuals have been sentenced to die by military courts, the high-profile nature of those cases has drawn virtually all attention away from the death sentences that continue to be handed down by the regular courts and made even more difficult scrutiny of the non-military cases that have been sent to the gallows.

While wide-ranging judicial reforms remain a distant priority for the government, there are two interventions that could help slow down the frantic rate of executions. Firstly, the government could form a special high-powered committee consisting of judicial and human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
experts to review the cases that are set for execution rather than leaving it to the normal channels of review via the courts and the interior ministry. Secondly, the unacceptably wide range of crimes that the death penalty can be handed down for should be urgently reviewed. If the political will exists, the legalities of both steps could surely be worked out in reasonable time. The shameful record of executions last year should be not exceeded in 2016.

Lahore girl who was gang-raped attempts suicide after 'pressure from prosecution'
[DAWN] LAHORE: A 15-year old rape survivor who was assaulted by at least eight men in a hotel on Mall Road attempted suicide after continuous pressure from police and prosecution, her family said Saturday.

The victim's brother-in-law told Dawn that the family was about to go to sleep at night when she jumped from the terrace. She injured herself and was rushed to the Services Hospital. She is now back at home recovering.

He said she had been under duress from the police interrogations, where officials harassed her with "all kinds of questions".

"She's a child," her brother-in-law said. "You can imagine what kind of questions they ask."

The victim's sister earlier told Dawn that police were pressuring their family to exclude the name of main suspect Adnan from the FIR. She said police started action against the suspects after some TV channels aired the news and appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...

The teenage girl, an 8th grade student, had earlier said that PML-N Punjab Youth Wing additional secretary general Adnan and his accomplices kidnapped her from Multan Road and forced her to drink some intoxicated liquid after which she lost consciousness.

This was followed by a text message that was received on the girl's mother's mobile phone around 11pm last Friday. The text said: "Your daughter is lying unconscious in room number 230 of a hotel on The Mall." She said the family found the girl lying unconscious in the hotel room when they reached there along with police.

Racecourse police recovered the girl from the hotel room and shifted her to Services Hospital where reports of initial medical tests revealed she had been assaulted.

On the complaint of the survivor's mother, the police started the paperwork but haven't done much else against suspects Abdul Majid, Muhammad Umer, Ameer Ahmed, Haris, Bilawal, Zaman and PML-N Additional Secretary General of the youth wing Mian Adnan Sanaullah.

DNA tests of the eight men and the survivor were conducted by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency.

The FIR was initially registered against the suspects under Sections 376 and 506 of the Pakistain Penal Code. Police also added abduction to the list of charges against the eight accused.

All eight suspects were tossed in the slammer

Mexico mayor assassinated one day after taking office
Cuernavaca, Mexico -- Several gunmen burst into the home of a newly elected Mexican mayor and shot her dead on Saturday, just hours into her tenure, police said.

Gisela Mota, 33, a left-of-center former member of Congress, was gunned down barely 24 hours after taking her oath of office in the city of Temixco, which is about 90 kilometers (55 miles) from the capital Mexico City. Temixco is plagued by organized crime and rampant drug trafficking -- problems the slain mayor had vowed to help clean up.

The government of central Morelos state said that two of the suspected gunmen had been killed and one was in custody. State Governor Graco Ramirez pledged there would be "no impunity."
Sure. Now then, who wants to be the new mayor?
Morelos has been one of the Mexican states most affected by drug violence plaguing the country, including kidnappings and murders.

Britain
UK soldiers may face war crime charges
[SKYNEWS.AU] British veterans of the Iraq War could face prosecution for crimes including murder, the head of a team examining potential torture and unlawful killing during the conflict has said.

Mark Warwick, who leads the Government-established Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT), has told The Independent there are 'lots of significant cases' where there is substantial evidence for the Service Prosecuting Authority (SPA) to press charges.

Some of the 'serious allegations' being investigated may meet the threshold of a war crime, he added.

As of September 2015, the multimillion-pound inquiry has been in contact with 1,515 potential victims - but 280 of them were allegedly killed in unlawful circumstances.

Mr Warwick, a former police detective, has said members of the Armed Forces could be notified if they will face prosecution by 2019.

He explained: 'We would look at the credibility of the allegation in the first instance; and, when we've looked at a lot of these extra cases coming to us, some of them are duplicates of cases, some of them we've already identified as part of our own investigation process, and some are multiple allegations where we would investigate as a single allegation.'

The official also confirmed that the case of Baha Mousa remains a 'live criminal investigation'.

An inquiry found the Iraqi hotel receptionist died after being interrogated by British soldiers, in what was described as an 'appalling episode of serious gratuitous violence'.

Even though the inquiry's caseload is being reviewed 'over the next 12 to 18 months', campaigners are calling for IHAT to work faster, as answers may only emerge 10 years after the war's 2009 end.

Carla Ferstman, of the human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
charity Redress, told The Independent: 'The incredibly slow place at which IHAT is investigating allegations of criminality committed by UK soldiers against Iraqi civilians is wholly unacceptable.

Afghanistan
Taliban leader being treated for cancer in Lahore
In a statement to the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan, Shireen M. Mazari, spokesperson for the chairman of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan, said on Saturday that misunderstandings had arisen out of a remark about the treatment of an Afghan Taliban leader at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Lahore.

This came after media reports emerged Saturday that Khan reportedly confirmed that a top Taliban leader, who has cancer, was treated for his illness at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center, a hospital in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

The reports sparked outrage among Afghan political analysts, who said this confirms Pakistan's support of militant groups including that of the Taliban group.

But in the statement, Mazari said: "I wish to clear any misunderstanding that may have arisen out of a remark he made in a television interview about the treatment of an Afghan Taliban leader at the Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Lahore – which was subsequently taken out of context and also misinterpreted by segments of the Pakistani media."

"The chairman was discussing the issue of free treatment of 70 percent of cancer patients at the Shaukat Khanum hospital and that a number of these patients are Pathans including Afghans. That is one reason why the chairman decided to raise funds to build the second Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Peshawar."

Mazari went on to say: "In passing, he also referred to receiving a letter from an Afghan Taliban leader who had apparently received treatment at the Lahore hospital."

Mazari said: "The hospital does not ask for political or religious affiliations of its patients who all receive the same quality care whether it is free or being paid for, the revelation that an Afghan Taliban leader had been treated at the hospital only came about when that person sent a thank you letter. At the time that he was undergoing treatment there was no information about his political or religious associations except that he was an Afghan in need of treatment."

The statement went on to read: "So I hope you will understand that as a humanitarian hospital which offers free cancer treatment to 70 percent of its patients without discrimination, it is not possible for anyone to recognize, amongst the Afghans being treated, who is a Taliban and who is not. Nor would you or your government want us to stop offering treatment to Afghans who are our brethren and whom we have been hosting for over two decades now in Pakistan."

Bangladesh
Three Ctg JMB men sent to jail after remand
[Dhaka Tribune] A Chittagong court yesterday sent three members of banned bully boy outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
(JMB) to prison after they were interrogated during a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-terrorism Act.

Metropolitan Magistrate Rahmat Ali sent Naimur Rahman Noyon, Shawkat Rasel and Faisal Mahmud to jail as police produced them before the court after the end of remand.

The trio were locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in possession of firearms in different parts of the port city on December 27 last year, and were shown arrested in the case filed with Karnaphuli cop shoppe on October 6.

They all were students of physics at Chittagong University but their studentships were suspended by the university authorities for suspected link to militancy.

After arresting the three, Detective Branch (DB) officials raided a JMB den in the city's Aman Bazar area and recovered American semiautomatic MK 11 sniper rifle along with 250 rounds, two magazines, 10 detonators, 12 sets of Bangladesh Army uniforms, and some books and other documents.

DB's Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Akhtar said Fardin alias Noman, chief of JMB in Chittagong, rented the den five to six months ago, identifying himself as a businessman named Nafis.

'Africa's Biggest Jesus Statue' Unveiled in Nigeria
Not that it's an "in your face!" to Boko Haram or anything...
[AnNahar] Nigeria on Friday unveiled a nine-meter tall statue of Jesus Christ carved from white marble, thought to be the biggest of its kind in Africa.

Standing barefoot with arms outstretched, the "Jesus de Greatest" statue weighs in at 40 tonnes.

More than 100 priests and hundreds of Catholic worshipers attended the nine-meter (30-foot) statue's official unveiling in the village of Abajah in southeastern Nigeria.

It was commissioned by Obinna Onuoha, a local businessman who hired a Chinese company to carve it and placed it in the grounds of a 2000-capacity church that he built in 2012.

In his homily at a Mass before unveiling the statue, presiding bishop Augustine Tochukwu Okwuoma said it would be a "very great symbol of faith" for Catholic worshipers and passers-by alike.

"It will remind them of the importance of Jesus Christ," said Okwuoma.

The cost of the statue has not been revealed.

Earlier in the week, Onuoha told AFP it would be "the biggest statue of Jesus on the continent."

The 43-year-old boss of an oil and gas distribution company timed the statue's unveiling to coincide with his parents' 50th wedding anniversary.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country with 170 million people, is split between a more prosperous Christian south and a poor Muslim north -- an occasional source of tension.

More than 17,000 people have been killed in Islamist group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
's six-year quest to create an independent state but the violence has been mainly confined to Nigeria's Muslim-majority north.

And even as Nigeria rings in 2016, the ever-present threat of violence by Boko Haram hangs heavy over the country, despite official claims that the battle against the Islamist group has been "technically" won.

"We think religions can exist side by side," Onuoha said. "We hope that people can live in harmony."

He said the idea of building a giant statue of Jesus came to him in a dream nearly 20 years ago.

And when his 68-year-old mother fell seriously ill a few years ago, she made him promise that he would build a church if she survived.

Hundreds detained over two years of probes against Gülenists in Turkey
[Hurriyet] Around 1,800 people, including 750 coppers and 80 soldiers, have been detained as part of ongoing operations in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
against sympathizers of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen since 2014.
It's no fun being associated with a former best friend of Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan.
Some 439 detainees, including 205 coppers and 34 soldiers, have been formally tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in 2014 and 2015 amid operations across the country against the so-called "parallel structure."

A majority of these suspects have been released from prison pending trial, while there were still 278 people in jail pending trial as of Jan. 1.

Since early 2014, investigations into the "parallel structure" have seen hundreds of civil servants, including coppers and public prosecutors, arrested or reassigned.

The first operation against Gulenists took place on February 2014 in the southern province of Adana with suspects detained on "espionage" accusations.

Gulen is the top suspect in numerous cases involving the "Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ)/Parallel State Structure (PDY)," an alleged illegal organization that the government says is led by him. Both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) accuse the "parallel structure" of exploiting the judiciary and state institutions to achieve its goal of overthrowing the government.

Gulen has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999 but is now the subject of a series of arrest warrants in Turkey. A prosecutor is seeking a prison sentence of up to 34 years for Gulen on allegations that he sought to topple Erdogan. Gulen denies the allegations.

On Nov. 10, 2015, an Istanbul court accepted an indictment against 122 suspects including Gulen, former police chief Yurt Atayun, and police officer-turned-columnist Emre Uslu. The indictment came as part of the investigation into misconduct in a past probe that led to sprawling surveillance activities against hundreds of leading politicians, academics and journalists.

Demanding the arrest of Gulen and Uslu without a warrant, the Istanbul 14th Court for Serious Crimes on Nov. 9 accepted the indictment against 122 suspects. Gulen was listed as the primary suspect and Uslu was listed as the secondary suspect in the indictment.

The court ruled to issue red notices for Gulen and Uslu as they were abroad at the time, while it also wrote an official letter to the Justice Ministry's International Law and Foreign Affairs Directorate to bring the two back to Turkey.

A total of 968 people, including Erdogan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, all ministers in the 61st AKP cabinet, several university rectors, academics, public servants, journalists and other prominent figures were listed as victims and plaintiffs in the indictment.

The indictment also demanded double aggravated life sentences against Gulen, Uslu and Atayun for charges including one count each of "forming and heading an armed terrorist organization," "gathering officially confidential information for political and military surveillance purposes," "attempting to topple the government of the Republic of Turkey," "violation of private life and keeping personal data," "fabricating false documents," "fabricating criminal activity," "publicizing officially confidential information for political and military surveillance purposes," "obstructing, concealing and manipulating evidence" and "unlawful recording of personal data."

Security officials increasingly suspect that the murder of a taxi driver in Tel Aviv on Friday afternoon is connected to a fatal shooting attack in the city's Dizengoff Street that occurred a short time earlier, Walla news reported Saturday.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korean Leader Vows to Raise Living Standards, Warns Foreign 'Provocateurs'
[ALMANAR.LB] North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un said raising living standards was his top priority in an annual New Year's address on Friday.

The 30-minute televised speech was not without the normal bellicose rhetoric -- threatening a "sacred war" if provoked and stressing the need to develop "varied" military strike options -- but the clear thrust was economic development in the isolated, cash-strapped state.

"The Workers Party of Korea gives top priority to the issue of improving people's living standards among millions of other national tasks," Kim said.

"We must create a turnaround in economic development," he added.

On relations with South Korea, Kim said he was open to talks but warned Seoul against any activity that might threaten a tentative cross-border agreement reached in August to reduce tensions.

In particular, he stressed the provocative dangers inherent in the South's annual joint military exercises with the United States -- a perennial thorn in North-South ties.

"If aggressors and provocateurs touch us even slightly, we will not hesitate to respond with a merciless sacred war for justice and national reunification," he said.

His speech came a day after the state funeral of North Korea's top official in charge of relations with South Korea, Kim Yang-Gon, who state media reported as having died in a car accident on Tuesday.

Kim Jong-Un, wearing black-rimmed glasses and his trademark black Mao suit, delivered his speech from behind a lectern in a wood-paneled room in the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee Office Building in Pyongyang.

Also, it takes precisely as long to make it as it takes for the noodles to cook, perfect for a weeknight dinner or when the children need to be fed.

Goulash (Hungarian Beef Stew)
Serves 6-8. Based on a recipe in Cook's Illustrated 11/08.

Prep time 30-45 minutes, cooking time ~3 hours. Make up to two days before serving.
Do not substitute hot, half-sharp, or smoked Spanish paprika for the sweet paprika. Since paprika is vital to this recipe, it is best to use a fresh container. Chuck-eye roast is preferred, but any boneless chuck will do. Cook stew in a 6-qt. Dutch oven with a tight-fitting lid. (Alternatively, to ensure a tight seal, place a sheet of foil over the pot before adding the lid.) The stew is best when cooled, covered tightly, and refrigerated 1-2 days before serving; wait to add the sour cream until after reheating. Can be frozen up to six months.

Ingredients
3 1/2 - to 4-pound boneless beef chuck-eye roast, trimmed of excess fat and cut into ¾” cubes (do not get pre-cut, as the pieces are irregular, therefore cook irregularly)
1 1/2 tsp.salt
1/3 cup (2 oz.) sweet paprika powder
12-ounce (about 1 cup) jar roasted red peppers, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons tomato paste (get in tube rather than can, if possible -- it tastes less tinny)
2 tsp white vinegar
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
4 large onions, diced (about 6 cups = 840g = scant 2 lb)
4 large cloves garlic
4 large carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4"€œ thick rounds (about 2 cups) or more, to taste
1 bay leaf
1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed
1/2 cup red wine
2 cups low sodium beef broth (any brand with first ingredients listed as beef plus yeast extract)
1 cup sour cream or drained plain Greek yoghurt

1. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Sprinkle meat evenly with 1 teaspoon salt and set aside. Process paprika, roasted peppers, tomato paste, and 2 teaspoons vinegar in food processor until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down sides as needed.

2. Combine oil, onions, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in large Dutch oven or two 3 quart pots; cover and set over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions soften but have not yet begun to brown, 8 to 10 minutes. (If onions begin to brown, reduce heat to medium-low and stir in 1 tablespoon water.) Crush garlic, add to pot, saute’ for 30 seconds until perfume is released.

3. Stir in paprika mixture; cook, stirring occasionally, until onions stick to bottom of pot, about 2 minutes. Scrape onion mixture over beef, set aside. Turn heat up to high, then deglaze pot with red wine, scraping up browned bits while boiling rapidly to reduce. Add beef broth, continuing to boil rapidly to reduce to about half a cup. Add onion mixture, beef, carrots, bay leaf and pepper; stir until beef is well coated. Scrape down sides of pot, then cover pot and transfer to oven. Cook until meat is almost tender, 2 to 2 1/2 hours. If needed add water until the surface of the liquid is 1/4" from top of meat (beef should not be fully submerged). Return covered pot to oven and continue to cook until fork slips easily in and out of beef, about 30 minutes longer. Remove from oven and let cool. While cooling, remove a cup or two of liquid and boil until reduced by half, then return to pot and continue cooling. (Reducing the sauce really concentrates the flavours.) Refrigerate up to two days.

4. To serve: skim fat off surface of goulash, remove bay leaf, then reheat over medium heat. Meanwhile, boil 1 lb.egg noodles or small, red-skinned potatoes. Stir sour cream into goulash, then adjust salt and pepper to taste. Drain potatoes/noodles. Quarter potatoes, if using, then toss potatoes/noodles with 2-4 Tbsp. butter.

5. Serve stew over potatoes or egg noodles, with green salad on the side and a good, crusty bread, if desired. Nice with a sturdy young red wine: Zinfadel, an Australian Shiraz or a Napa Valley Cabernet, Beaujolais Villages or Chianti Classico.

Huguette's Quick Goulash

Set a pot of water to boil for noodles (I like elbow macaroni). Brown 1 lb. of ground beef (I prefer chuck) and drain fat. Set aside. Add 1 tbsp. of beef fat to to pan, then saute 1 medium chopped onion and 1 green pepper until tender. Add 1 minced clove of garlic, stirring until fragrant. Set aside with beef. Add salt and noodles to boiling water. Add red wine to pan to deglaze, then stir in 1 can of tomato soup, salt and pepper to taste, Tabasco sauce, 1 bay leaf, 1 oz. sweet paprika powder, and a bit of chicken boullion. Stir in beef and vegetables, and a heaping tbsp. of sour cream or Greek yoghurt if desired. Drain noodles, toss with a bit of butter or oil, then serve with grated Parmesan cheese.

#2  I generally double the Hungarian goulash recipe when I make it, because it is a bit of work. Sometimes it lasts long enough for some portions to make their way into the freezer. I always triple my mother-in-law's version. If I really want some for the freezer, I double it again.

I therefore buy paprika powder in bulk. I used to get it from Penzeys, but I got tired of Bill Penzey filling my email in-box with his political screeds, and therefore switched to the [happily apolitical] original spice business his sister took over from their parents: The Spice House. Thus far I've been very pleased with their products and their prices.

#3  I love some Hungarian Goulash.

I too was a bit hesitant about charcuterie, but it does fill in a gap about the question about food preservation. The age old question, how to store food.

The Grand Turk
ISIS 'New Year suicide bombing' suspects arrested in Turkey
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Ankara court on Saturday remanded in jug pending trial two Turkish men suspected of belonging to ISIS and planning a double suicide kaboom in the capital on New Year's Eve.

Musa Canoz, 28, and Adnan Yildirim, 40, who were detained in a raid on Wednesday, were tossed in the calaboose
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on charges of "possessing kabooms" and "membership of a terrorist organization", the Anatolia news agency reported.

They were sent to the Sincan prison in Ankara, it added. It was not clear when a trial may start.

Turkish officials said the pair were planning to strike an area in the centre of the city that was expected to be packed with revellers on the night of December 31. In the end, the celebrations passed peacefully.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
is on a high security alert after 103 people were killed on October 10 when two jacket wallahs destroyed a crowd of peace activists in Ankara in the worst attack in modern Turkey's history.

The Hurriyet daily reported that the pair had left Ankara in 2013 to join up with IS forces in Syria, where they received bomb-making training.

They then crossed back into Turkey in September this year, renting an apartment in the Mamak district of Ankara where they were detained.

It said they had been given final instructions over the Internet by an IS handler, an Arab with the codename Ebu Enes, on the day they were detained.

A third suspect, named as Z.A., has been detained on suspicion of providing logistical and transport support, it added.

The suspected bombers are believed by Sherlocks to have been acting on the orders of IS headquarters in their self-declared capital in Raqa, Syria, rather than independently, it added.

Long criticised by its allies for taking too soft a line against jihadists, Turkey is taking firmer action against the IS group on the border with Syria after being shaken by attacks on its soil and the Gay Paree assaults on November 13.
