Mormon church condemns Bundy militia in Oregon
[Wash Times] The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement condemning the armed anti-government protesters who took over a building Sunday in a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon.

"While the disagreement occurring in Oregon about the use of federal lands is not a Church matter, Church leaders strongly condemn the armed seizure of the facility and are deeply troubled by the reports that those who have seized the facility suggest that they are doing so based on scriptural principles," the church said in a statement.

"This armed occupation can in no way be justified on a scriptural basis. We are privileged to live in a nation where conflicts with government or private groups can -- and should -- be settled using peaceful means, according to the laws of the land."

Social Security: Surge of children named Mohammed up 10,000%
[Washington Examiner] The number of U.S. newborns named "Mohammed" has jumped 100-fold since 1964, one way of determining the growth of second and third generation Muslims, according to a leading immigration watchdog.

Based on Social Security Administration baby name figures, there were only 29 babies born with one of the spellings of Mohammed in 1964. That has surged to 2,931.

The Center for Immigration Studies used the statistics to determine the growth of the Muslim community, a statistic the federal government doesn't chart.

"Given the fact that some U.S.- or European-born Muslim terrorists (such as Syed Farook in San Bernardino) have been menacing Western societies, are there any statistics on the growth of the second-generation Muslim populations?" blogged CIS Fellow David North.

The growth in babies name Mohammed grew until the 9/11 attacks, when it fell. Wrote North, "Note the drop after 2001, presumably a reaction to the events of 9/11, and then the sharp increase from 2004 to 2014, of more than 1,000."

Former U.S. attorney: Clinton could face criminal indictment
[Washington Examiner] A former U.S. attorney thinks Hillary Clinton could face a criminal indictment from the FBI within the next 60 days.

Joe DiGenova, a Republican U.S. attorney appointed by President Reagan, said Clinton's "biggest problem right now" is the open FBI investigation into the contents of her private emails.

"They have reached a critical mass in their investigation of the secretary and all of her senior staff," DiGenova said Tuesday on the "Laura Ingraham Show" radio program. "And, it's going to come to a head, I would suggest, in the next 60 days."

FBI Director James Comey has refused to answer questions about when his agents will wrap up a months-long probe into whether Clinton and her staff mishandled classified information on an unsecured network.

#7  If she does face indictment its because the Dems don't want her. The indictment alone would probably give the primary to Sanders. Then things could be dropped so that she avoids prison.

More likely the FBI will clear her of all wrongdoing in the days before the primary to give her a boost.

It would be interesting to see how an indictment could be twisted by the fevered left to be W's fault.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea Says It Has Detonated Its First Hydrogen Bomb
Thanks to 3dc for the tip.
North Korea declared on Tuesday that it had detonated its first hydrogen bomb.

The assertion, if true, would dramatically escalate the nuclear challenge from one of the world’s most isolated and dangerous states. In an announcement, North Korea said that the test had been a “complete success.” But it was difficult to tell whether the statement was true. North Korea has made repeated claims about its nuclear capabilities that outside analysts have greeted with skepticism.
There is the seismic evidence...
“This is the self-defensive measure we have to take to defend our right to live in the face of the nuclear threats and blackmail by the United States and to guarantee the security of the Korean Peninsula,” a female North Korean announcer said, reading the statement on Central Television, the state-run network.

The North’s announcement came about an hour after detection devices around the world had picked up a 5.1 seismic event along the country’s northeast coast. It may be weeks or longer before detectors sent aloft by the United States and other powers can determine what kind of test was conducted. Ned Price, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement that American officials “cannot confirm these claims at this time.”

But he said the White House expected “North Korea to abide by its international obligations and commitments.”
Expect all you like, Ned, but the Norks have a record of not doing so...
The tremors occurred at or near the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, where three previous tests have been conducted over the past nine years.

In recent weeks, the North’s aggressive young leader, Fat Bastard Kim Jong-un, has boasted that the country has finally developed the technology to build a thermonuclear weapon — far more powerful than the low-yield devices tested first in 2006, then in different configurations months after President Obama took office in 2009 and again in 2013. The North Korean announcement said the test had been personally ordered by the corpulent Mr. Kim, only three days after he signed an order on Sunday for North Korean engineers to press ahead with the attempt.

The announcer added that for the North to give up its nuclear weapons while Washington’s “hostile policy” continued would be “as foolish as for a hunter to lay down his rifle while a ferocious wolf is charging at him.”

Satellite photographs analyzed by 38 North, a Washington research institute that follows the North’s nuclear activity closely, showed evidence of a new tunnel being dug in recent weeks.

Another test by itself would not be that remarkable. The North is believed to have enough plutonium for eight to 12 weapons, and several years ago it revealed a new program to enrich uranium, the other fuel for a nuclear weapon. But if the North Korean claim about a hydrogen bomb is true, this test was of a different, and significantly more threatening, nature.

In recent weeks, the enormous Mr. Kim boasted that North Korea had finally developed the technology to build a thermonuclear weapon. When the decadent Mr. Kim first made the claim, in December, the White House expressed considerable skepticism, and several other experts say that the accomplishment would be a stretch, though not impossible.

Outside analysts took the claim as the latest of several hard-to-verify assertions that the isolated country has made about its nuclear capabilities. But some also said that although North Korea did not yet have H-bomb capability, it might be developing and preparing to test a boosted fission bomb, more powerful than a traditional nuclear weapon. Weapon designers can easily boost the destructive power of an atom bomb by putting at its core a small amount of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen.

Lee Sang-cheol, the top nonproliferation official at the South Korean Defense Ministry, told a forum in Seoul last month that although Mr. Kim’s hydrogen bomb boasts might be propaganda for his domestic audience, there was a “high likelihood” that North Korea might have been developing such a boosted fission weapon.

And according to a paper obtained by the South Korean news agency Yonhap last week, the Chemical, Biological and Radiological Command of the South Korean military “did not rule out the possibility” of a boosted fission bomb test by the North, although it added it “does not believe it is yet capable of directly testing hydrogen bombs.”

For the Obama administration, which only six months ago supposedly defused the Iranian nuclear threat with an agreement to surrender limit its capabilities for at least a decade, the announcement rekindles another major nuclear challenge — one that the administration has never found a way to manage.

The North has refused to enter the kind of negotiations that Iran did. Unlike Iran, which denies it has interest in nuclear weapons, the North has forged ahead with tests and told the West and China it would never give them up.

Mr. Obama, determined not to give the country new concessions, has neither acknowledged that North Korea is now a nuclear power nor negotiated with it. The White House has said that it would only restart talks with the North if the goal — agreed to by all parties — was a “denuclearized Korean Peninsula.”

China has also failed in its efforts to rein in Mr. Kim.
China has the ability to curb its dog whenever it wants. That it has not done so to this point suggests that there has not been on attempt to "rein in" Pudgy in any significant way. It's all theater done for the benefit of gullible Western analysts...
He has never been invited to Beijing since his father’s death, and Chinese officials are fairly open in their expressions of contempt for him. But they have not abandoned him, or cut off the aid that keeps the country afloat.

With the test conducted Tuesday night — Wednesday in North Korea — three of the North’s four explosions will have occurred during Mr. Obama’s time in office.
They'll still blame Bush...
Combined with the North’s gradually increasing missile technology,
Developed in cooperation with Iran...
its nuclear program poses a growing threat to the region — though it is still not clear the North knows how to mount a nuclear weapon on one of its missiles.
That's just an engineering problem...
The test is bound to figure in the American presidential campaign, where several candidates have already cited the North’s nuclear experimentation as evidence of American weakness — though they have not prescribed alternative strategies for choking off the program.

#3  yes, mounting a nuclear weapon on a missile is 'just an engineering problem' but it is a difficult one

U-235 bombs are pretty heavy and bulky

Pu-239 bombs can be made lighter and smaller but Pu-239 is not so easy to work with

also there is the 'ignition at the right time' issue

airplanes make a better delivery system for threshold and post 'first test' nuclear weapons powers

#9  All this talk of NoKo being unable to mount a warhead on a missile is garbage.
AQ Khan provided Libya with engineering blueprints for a Chinese designed missile warhead, The Chinese gave this design to Pakistan and Pakistan gave it to everybody else, including North Korea, with whom it shared bomb technology in exchange for missile technology. The Chinese have the North Koreans the missile tech. The aim of both proliferations was to encourage nuclear and missile free zones in east asia and south asia, neutering India, Japan, South Korea as they get locked into decnuclearization agreements with NoKo and Pakistan. Unfortunately for China, India won't play ball, and Japan while non nuclear on paper could build a large and sophisticated arsenal very quickly.

#10  And the North Korean test site has never been calibrated to obtain the empirical constants used to estimate yield. Any figures given by outsiders are just guesses,

#11  So is North Korea completely out of the Chinese control now or is this at the behest of Bejing?

#12  The yield Y of a nuclear explosion is given by the equation
M = a + b log Y
where a and b are empirically determined constants for the test site and M is the magnitude.

Initial reports gave the a magnitude of 5.1

for the Novaya Zemlya test site, the eqn would be
5.1 = 4.45 + 0.75 log Y
this gives a yield Y of 7.3 kt

for Nevada Test Site, it would be
5.1 = 3.92 + 0.81 log Y
this gives a Y of 28.6 kt

Nobody has calibrated the North Korean test site and so the empirical constants can only be guessed, based on presumed geology (or chosen to give the yield you wish to claim).
You have estimates of 7 to 29 depending on the numbers you choose and measurement used.
Posted by: John Frum || 01/06/2016 15:05 Comments || Top||

#13  Testing at reduced yield would avoid blowing out the test tunnel and contaminating their country.
50kt would make a nice package suitable for MIRVing a missile. The United Kingdom uses 100kt warheads on its Trident SLBM missiles with yields of 0.3 (unboosted primary), 5-10kt (adjusting tritium boosting) and 100t (full yield)

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Insane Demand For Guns Crushes Expectations
[Daily Caller] President Barack Obama's impending executive action on gun control has caused an insane spike in gun sales, according to data from manufacturer Smith & Wesson.

In fact, the sales have been so explosive that merchants are having a difficult time keeping guns in stock, the company notes. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average tanked by 1.6 percent, gun companies posted stock increases. Smith & Wesson shares finished Monday at 5.9 percent higher. Sturm Ruger, a competitor of Smith & Wesson, posted gains of 2.9 percent.

Some analysts speculate that there's a definite link between Obama's expected gun control announcement and increased sales, a trend which has periodically repeated itself through the Obama's two stints in the White House. Smith & Wesson confirmed in a press release that demand has shot through the roof since Obama took office in 2009.

#1  What is NOT mentioned in the article is the second order effect of a decline in quality control. S&W has a lifetime warranty. Some of the others, not so much. Sending a firearm back to the manufacturer for work can be very costly and time consuming.

I recommend the following:

1. Do your product and warranty research prior to buying.
2. Rent the weapon you plan to own from a reputable range and run a box or two of ammo through prior to buying. Most places don't do 'returns' on firearms.
3. Inspect the weapon carefully prior to buying, especially a used weapon.
4. Ask about firearms safety and training classes. Training is always helpful, and a 'certificate of training' might prove handy should you ever have to use the weapon.

Actual 'Veterans' hard to find in executive level VA jobs
[Daily Caller] Despite a long-running government-wide push to hire veterans, only 13 percent of the top officials managing Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system medical facilities are veterans and only two of those facilities are run by doctors who served in the military, according to an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The DCNF analysis examined the biographies of the 300 top employees who run VA's 75 medical centers and regional offices, including directors, chiefs of staff and associate and assistant directors. (See interactive database below and here.) The original Veterans Preference Act in federal employment became law in 1944.

Viewing the 13 percent figure, it's almost as if the VA wants to ensure that, if veterans do work for the agency, they don't have the power to make changes.

Retired Navy Seal officer Gilberto Serrano, for example, told TheDCNF he applied for "at least 20" jobs at the VA. He has two master's degrees, a background in finance at major corporations, and spent three years volunteering doing financial analyses for the Puerto Rico VA.

#3  Jerry Pournelle's
Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people:

First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration.

Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc.

The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization.

Sexual assaults blamed on 'Arab' men in Germany
[WASHINGTONPOST] New Year's Eve attacks attributed to Arab and North African men threaten to fan the flames of Germany's refugee debate.

The wave of violence overnight on Thursday resulted in dozens of reports of sexual assault and robberies around the city's main train station, where a crowd of about 1,000 men had congregated, police said, according to Spiegel online.

"We will not tolerate such cowardly and abhorrent attacks," German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said Tuesday. "This is apparently an entirely new dimension of organized crime."

More than 90 criminal complaints were filed. About a quarter of them cited sexual harassment or groping, including at least one rape, according to the BBC. Most others alleged theft, Cologne Police Chief Wolfgang Albers said at a news conference on Monday night. Small groups of men would emerge from the larger crowd to surround, harass and sometimes steal from women, Albers said.

The crimes were committed by men "who from appearance were largely from the North African or Arab world," he said, according to the Local. Police said they were previously aware of many of the men in the crowd, which did not include any recently arrived refugees. Similar attacks were reported in Hamburg and Stuttgart, according to the BBC.

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker described the attacks as "outrageous" and called an emergency meeting of city officials, according to the Telegraph.

"We cannot tolerate a legal vacuum here," said Reker, who was elected in October while hospitalized after an opponent of her pro-refugee policies stabbed her in the neck.

Turkey to regulate Friday work hours according to prayer time, prime minister says
[TODAYSZAMAN] The government has been working on a draft bill that will enable public employees to observe the Friday prayer without any interruption at work, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday.

"We have prepared a bill that would prevent office hours from affecting our freedom of worship without creating a loss in working hours," Davutoglu said during a group meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

On the eve of collective bargaining negotiations last summer, the Civil Servants' Trade Union (Memur-Sen) asked the government to extend Friday lunch breaks at public institutions to two hours.

The Friday prayer is a weekly duty for Muslims that lasts some 45 minutes, requiring Muslim men to gather in a mosque. According to the current regulations, lunch break at public institutions is fixed between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., or between 12:30 p.m. and 13:30 p.m., as the Friday prayer starts at 12 p.m. in winter months and at 1 p.m. in the summer season.

Turkey reopens Habur border gate with Iraq to limited traffic
[TODAYSZAMAN] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's Habur border crossing with Iraq, which had remained closed for 22 days due to a curfew in nearby towns, was reopened on a limited basis on Tuesday, as only 1,250 vehicles will be allowed to cross the border each day.

Located some 18 kilometers south of the Silopi district in Sirnak province, where severe festivities are ongoing between security forces and the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) -- the ordinarily busy crossing was closed on Dec. 14, leaving thousands of cargo trucks stranded along both sides of the border.

"Only 500 vehicles will be allowed to drive over the border from Turkey to Iraq and 750 vehicles will be permitted to enter Turkey from Iraq," Bulent Tufenkci, the minister of customs and trade, told media on Monday, warning drivers of the limits in an effort to prevent new vehicle backups.

According to Tufenkci, as many as 13,500 trucks were waiting at the Habur gate, with 9,500 of them held up in Iraq, unable to cross into Turkey.

"A sizeable part of our exports, $8.5 billion worth, went through this gate in 2015. Exporters in Istanbul and eastern and southeastern Turkey send their goods to Iraq via this gate," the minister added.

Local trade unions said earlier that the estimated loss in exports to Iraq since the beginning of December was $450 million. A daily average of 6,000 trucks used to drive through the Habur gate before the curfew, accounting for 45 percent of land crossings between Iraq and Turkey.

Turkey's yearly export volume sustained a significant decrease of 21.9 percent year-on-year in 2015, falling from $10.7 billion to $8.3 billion. The second largest export partner of Turkey in 2014, Iraq fell to the third spot in 2015.

No casualties in Jalalabad explosion
A comparatively heavy explosion rocked Jalalabad city on Tuesday morning.

According to initial reports, it was a planted bomb that went off in the third sector of the city. The explosion site is close to the consulates of India, Pakistan and Iran.

“The blast took place due to a bomb placed in a garbage can close to Baet Nika mosque in Arzaq alley located in third sector of Jalalabad city at 11:20 am today,” states a post on the official facebook page of Nangarhar Media Center states. “It did not have casualties,” the press release adds.

Possible target the explosion is yet unknown but it comes few weeks after Afghanistan’s national intelligence agency foiled a terrorist plot to target vehicles of Indian consulate in Jalalabd city with a 30-KG bomb.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) arrested terrorists Ata-ur-Rahman alias Hanzala and Abdullah alias Qari Ismail in the first half of December who were planning to plant the landmine on a road frequently used by the Indian consulate.

Missed clues and lax security in runup to Pathankot Indian Air Force base attack
[DAWN] The hijacking of an Indian police officer's car by gunnies disguised in uniform should have set off alarm bells and helped prevent a deadly weekend attack on a military air base, officials and security experts said.

His colleagues' slowness to react was one of several security lapses in the buildup to the pre-dawn raid, blamed by India on alleged Pak murderous Moslems and a blow to the recent improvement in ties between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

Three days on from an assault that killed seven military personnel and maimed 22, five attackers have also been eliminated, but an operation was still under way to secure the sprawling compound in India's northwestern Punjab.

Police Superintendent Salwinder Singh's call to a colleague in the early hours of Friday morning, after his car was hijacked, was at first treated as a case of armed robbery, the officer who answered the phone said.

"The truth is that we did not take Singh's complaint seriously, because his record has not been clean," a second senior officer in the Punjab

Turkey Police Raid 16 Suspected ISIL Hideouts
[ALMANAR.LB] Investigations into the identity of an English-speaking man who featured in an ISIL group video are focusing on a Briton, Siddhartha Dhar, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Dhar was born a Hindu and ran a business renting out bouncy castles in northeast London before converting to Islam and becoming radicalized, the broadcaster said.

It cited an unnamed official source as saying that Dhar was the main suspect, although Britannia's intelligence services never comment on the record about their investigations.

On Sunday, ISIL released a video featuring a masked fighter carrying a gun and speaking English which showed the killing of five "spies" it said had worked with the international coalition fighting ISIL holy warriors in Iraq and Syria.

Yemeni Army Refutes Aggression Rumors, Gains Military Victories in Jizan
[ALMANAR.LB] New details have been revealed about the decisive operations carried out by the Yemeni army and the Popular Committees on Monday in the Saudi area of Al-Tawal.

The national military established full control over Saudi military sites in the Al-Tawal border outlet during a major military operation that left dozens killed or injured and forced others to retreat long distances amid collapses and injuries among the enemy ranks.

A military source said the army troops and the Committees launched a surprise attack on the Saudi forces in their recently built positions in Al-Tawal region and killed dozens of Saudi soldiers and other mercenaries.

The source noted that the Yemeni Missile Unit also flattened other Saudi military posts in the areas of Beit Kaba', North Ataya and Mesfaq in Jizan, while the artillery fire targeted other Saudi sites in Khoba and Qae'm Zabid.

This military achievement comes in response to rumors promoted by the Saudi aggression media outlets about the progress of their mercenaries towards the district of Harad.

Venezuela Opposition Controls Congress After 17 Years
[ABCNEWS.GO] Venezuela's opposition took majority control of the National Assembly on Tuesday after years in the political wilderness, setting the stage for a potential power struggle with embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

Lawmakers were sworn in during a heated parliamentary session that saw pro-government representatives walk out in protest after pushing their way onto the dais as the new leadership tried to lay out its legislative agenda.

It's the first time in 17 years that opponents of the socialist revolution begun by the late President Hugo Chavez have controlled the legislature, and many leaders seemed rapt in disbelief.

The opposition won a two-thirds majority in a landslide election victory last month, giving it unprecedented strength to challenge Maduro's rule. But that key super-majority is now in doubt after a government-stacked Supreme Court barred four politicians from taking their seats at the last minute while it considers allegations of electoral fraud. As a result, only 163 of 167 politicians were sworn in during Tuesday's ceremony.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of opposition supporters accompanied the incoming politicians past a heavy military barricade to the neoclassical legislature downtown. A few blocks away, a much larger crowd of government supporters gathered outside the presidential palace to lament the inauguration of what they call a "bourgeois parliament" intent on "legislating slavery."

New posts in Bajaur to stop cross-border attacks
KHAR: The security forces have set up dozens of new posts along the Pakistan Afghanistan border to stop cross-border attacks and infiltration of militants from the neighbouring country.

Briefing journalists about the security measures, Commandant Bajaur Scouts Col Niyar Zaman said here on Monday that the measures were part of a strategy to make the agency safe and stop cross-border attacks.

He said that new posts were established at various areas including Nawagai, Chamaraknd, Mamond, Salarzai, Charmang and Kamangara along the border. He said that those areas were strategically important. The official said that all the newly established posts were fully functional and well-trained troops were deployed there. The step would secure the border areas from cross-border attacks and stop infiltration of militants from Afghanistan in Pakistani territory, he added.

“The posts are now completely functional and equipped with all kind of modern weapons and other items,” said Col Zaman. He added that after the establishment of new posts the security personnel would easily check suspicious activities in the region.

The official said that residents of the border areas welcomed establishment of the new posts as they felt more secure and comfortable. He said that establishment of new posts in the border localities strengthened relations between the local people and security forces.

“The establishment of the new posts by the security forces has not only increased confidence of local people but people’s support for the forces,” said the official.

He said that people and security forces were on the same page about maintenance of peace and stability in the region and elimination of militants and anti-social elements.

1 US soldier killed, 2 wounded in Taliban attack in Helmand
Praying for the survivors.
At least one US soldier was killed and two others were wounded in Taliban attack in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan.

Earlier reports indicated an unknown number of Afghan and US troops were killed or wounded in the attack.

However, the US Forces in Afghanistan confirmed the incident and said one U.S. service member died as a result of wounds sustained during operations near Marja in Helmand Province today.

Additionally, two U.S. service members were wounded. “We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Brig. Gen. Wilson A. Shoffner, USFOR-A Spokesman. “On behalf of General Campbell and all of USFOR-A, our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved.”

No further details were given regarding the identity of the deceased soldier, saying “U.S. Department of Defense Policy is to withhold the identity of the service member pending next-of-kin notification. We will release additional information as appropriate.”

Helmand is among the volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militants are actively operating in its various districts and frequently carry out insurgency activities.

The Taliban militants have recently doubled their insurgency activities in different parts of Helmand province with an aim to capture key districts of the province.

Blah, blah, blah,...easy to criticize badly reported events with incomplete information 12000 miles away from my keyboard. Sometimes I get tired of hearing myself think.

Explosives found under overhead bridge stairs in Lahore
LAHORE: A five kilogramme (kg) bomb with ball bearings and a remote control device was found under the stairs of the Samsani overhead bridge on Canal Road on Monday, sometime after Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan drove through the area.

Sadar Division Superintendent of Police (SP) Haroonur Rasheed told Dawn patrolling police officials checked the stairs of the bridge during their routine patrolling and seized the five-kg bomb, 2.5kg ball bearings and two gallons petrol along with a remote control.

He said soon after the discovery of the explosives, they launched a search operation in Nawab Town, Thokar Niaz Baig and Hanjarwal.

He said apparently the bomb had been placed to harm the interior minister who crossed the bridge on his way to Islamabad.

The SP said the bomb was handed over to forensic experts for further investigations.

He said that the police that discovered the explosives would be rewarded with prize and appreciation certificates.

The Grand Turk
CHP, MHP leaders agree on need for new constitution
[TODAYSZAMAN] Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has identified some of the issues agreed upon with the leaders of the main opposition parties after a round of meetings in recent weeks, stating that all had mentioned their dislike of the current Constitution, formed after the military coup in 1980.

Speaking to Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies in Parliament on Tuesday, Davutoglu said that all the leaders he met with expressed the need for a new constitution, and he noted that polemics and petty squabbles should not overshadow the process.

Davutoglu met with main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu on Dec. 30 and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli on Monday.

The topics discussed at both meetings were primarily related to the formation of a new constitution and the switch to an executive presidential system, which the AK Party and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
have promoted.

Davutoglu stated that he had arrived at an agreement with Kilicdaroglu and Bahceli on the process of how to create a new constitution and how the Constitution Commission that will head the process will be formed.

After the meetings with Davutoglu, spokespersons from CHP and MHP said that 60 articles for a new constitution that had been readied by a previous commission studying the subject which collapsed after the opposition and AK Party were at odds are good building blocks that can be built on.

Expressing his desire to see support from the opposition in Parliament, Davutoglu also said that the second issue that he had come to an agreement on with opposition party leaders was a revision of Parliament's bylaws.

Davutoglu also noted that a third point the parties had found common ground on is The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's EU accession process, and in particular, a reform package related to Turkey's visa-free EU travel aspirations.

ISIS tries to impede Peshmerga progress towards Mosul

city in Iraq's northwestern province of Nineveh.

The festivities, which centered in the Bartalah sub-district east of Mosul, came subsequent to an attack by ISIS faceless myrmidons on Peshmerga positions in the area.

Kurdish army of the Peshmerga has recently made progress in the eastern and northern countryside of Mosul , in a bid to retake the city from ISIS jihadists in cooperation with the Iraqi army and supported by the U.S.-led coalition.

Speaking to ARA News, a front man for the Peshmerga said that the Kurdish forces pushed ISIS back after heavy festivities on Tuesday evening.

"After more than four hours of festivities, Daesh [Islamic State] Lions of Islam were forced to retreat towards Mosul city," the source said, using another acronym for ISIS.

"Daesh [Islamic State] Lions of Islam also targeted our (Peshmerga) headquarters in the Safiyah village in Hamdaniya sub-district north of Mosul, but we were able to repel the attack with support of the coalition's warplanes," he said.

ISIS has reportedly used boom-mobiles and mortar shells in its attacks on the Peshmerga positions east and north of Mosul on Tuesday.

This comes as the radical group tries to fortify its headquarters in the city of Mosul amid preparations by the Kurdish Peshmerga army and Iraqi government forces to launch a large operation aimed at regaining Mosul from ISIS.

fighter in Mombasa on Tuesday and recovered weapons that had been intended for use in aborted New Year's Eve attacks on the coastal city, a senior government official said.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa told a news conference that four other suspects had escaped the raid, including two gunnies from the Somali-based group wanted for major attacks on Kenya since 2013.

"These men are behind major plots for attacks in the country and are linked to the Garissa University and Lamu attacks," Marwa said.

"They had planned to attack public beaches in Mombasa during the New Year when there were many people, but they were deterred by the level of security we had mounted there."

Al-Shabaab killed 148 students in the attack on Garissa University last April. In June 2014, the group killed 65 people over a 24-hour period in and around Mpeketoni in Lamu county, also in Kenya's east. It was also responsible for a raid on Nairobi's Westgate Mall in 2013 that killed 67 people.

Kenyan authorities have circulated pictures of suspected al-Shabaab gunnies and offered a 2 million shilling ($19,569.47) reward for information leading to arrests.

Al-Shabaab seeks to overthrow the Western-backed Somali government. It has frequently attacked neighboring Kenya in recent years, saying it is retaliating for Kenya's participation in an African Union

"Earlier this evening, ISIS forces of Evil with boom belts plotted to target the Peshmerga by taking advantage of the foggy weather in the village of Sheikh Ali on the Bashik front, but they were repelled," said Brig, Anwar Kolit.

"The Peshmerga and warplanes from the US-led coalition foiled the plot, shelling the bad boys, killing a number of them and wounding others," he added.

We "are bombing ISIS on a daily basis, and when the weather is bad or foggy they launch assaults," he said, adding that is why the Peshmerga are always "on alert to repulse any attack they might launch on the front."

ISIS forces of Evil have recently been suffering a series of setbacks and losses on the battlefield against the Peshmerga and Iraqi army.

On Monday, the Iraqi army announced that a day after ISIS forces of Evil captured a number of villages and towns in Anbar province, the military managed to recapture four districts in eastern Ramadi.

IS Has Lost Third of Iraq-Syria Territory, Says U.S.-led Coalition

group has lost around a third of the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria, according to figures provided Tuesday by the U.S.-led coalition.

"In Iraq, it's about 40 percent," said Colonel Steve Warren, front man for the international coalition which carries out daily air raids against IS and also provides training and weapons to local forces fighting the group.

"In Syria... we think it's around 20" percent, he said.

When the size of the so-called caliphate IS proclaimed 18 months ago was at its largest, Iraq accounted for a slightly bigger part of it than Syria.

"Taking together Iraq and Syria... they lost 30 percent of the territory they once held," Warren told news hounds in Baghdad.

Since taking control of Ramadi in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria in May 2015, IS has been on the back foot most of the time.

A variety of Iraqi forces -- including the Kurdish peshmerga, the Shiite-dominated Popular Mobilization paramilitary force and the federal forces -- have reclaimed major urban centers, including Ramadi last week.

Warren's estimate appear to differ significantly from a figure of 14 percent provided by the IHS Jane's think-tank, albeit predating the retaking of Ramadi.
Perhaps the difference is populated area vs. including empty desert?

(ISIS) in Hasakah, northeastern Syria.

The krazed killer, who was captured at a YPG checkpoint in the Nashwa district in Hasakah city, was reportedly planning to infiltrate explosives into the city in preparation to carry out a terror attack.

The Kurdish leadership in Hasakah said in a statement that the suspect was riding a cycle of violence loaded with bombs.

"When the terrorist tried to escape the guards at the checkpoint, our forces stopped him immediately. He was arrested after we found a large deal of explosives in the bags of his cycle of violence," YPG member Egid Qamishlo told ARA News in Hasakah.

"We have recently arrested several ISIS bully boyz who tried to infiltrate into Hasakah and the nearby city of Qamishli," he said.

"We have installed new checkpoints across the province in order to prevent any such attempts, for any terror attack claims lives of innocent civilians," the Kurdish front man said.

The bad boy group of Islamic State (ISIS) on Thursday claimed the responsibility for three bombings that hit restaurants in the city of Qamishli, killing 16 civilians and wounding more than 45 others.

All six militants killed in Pathankot airbase siege: Indian defence minister
[DAWN] Indian forces have killed the last of the six holy warriors who attacked an air force base near the Pakistain border over the weekend, the defense minister said Tuesday, though soldiers were still searching the base as a precaution.

Manohar Parrikar stopped short of saying the operation had ended, but Indian officials have said repeatedly that only six gunnies were involved.

At least twice over the weekend it appeared that the attack had ended but fresh gunfire and kabooms erupted both times.

Parrikar did not explain how just a handful of gunnies managed to paralyse a large Indian air base for almost four days, insisting that security forces had done "a commendable job."

Seven Indian soldiers were killed during the attack.

"I see some gaps (in intelligence) but we will be able to understand only after the investigation. But I don't think we compromised on security," he told news hounds after touring the scene of the fighting.

He noted that the base is large, and is wooded in some places, making it difficult to pin down the gunnies.

Parrikar said the turbans' weapons included AK-47 assault rifles with makeshift rocket launchers attached, mortar rounds that could be fired from the launchers, pistols, and 50-60 kilograms (110-130 pounds) of ammunition.

A fifth gunman was killed Monday on the third day of a siege.

There was no gunfire as troops searched the air base on the fourth day of the siege looking for a possible sixth gunman involved in the attack.

Earlier, Indian Air Force spokeswoman Rochelle D'Silva had said, "There has been no firing since Monday night at the base."

The search operations at Pathankot air force base will continue until all areas have been completely secured, Maj Gen Dushyant Singh, from India's elite National Security Guard, told news hounds.

Hackers cause electricity 'blackout' in Ukraine
More on this story from late yesterday afternoon.
In a worrying sign of potential cyber attacks to come, thousands of people in Ukraine were left without electricity after hackers hit electrical substations, it has been claimed.

The power outage in the country, first reported by local news sources on December 23, took a regional control center offline and has been blamed on malware.

It's believed the BlackEnergy Trojan -- which started out as a tool to create denial of service (DDoS) attacks in 2007 and has since been developed into sophisticated malware -- was used to cause the blackout.

Arabia
Aramco Bus Torched in Tense Saudi Eastern Province
[AnNahar] Saudi police said armed "troublemakers" torched a bus Tuesday in Eastern Province, which was home to Nimr al-Nimr, the prominent Shiite holy man whose execution sparked a regional crisis with Iran.

A police front man in the Shiite-majority province in the mainly Sunni Gulf kingdom said there were no casualties in the incident.

Cited by the official SPA news agency, he said four armed "troublemakers" intercepted the vehicle transporting workers in Qatif and set fire to it at gunpoint.

Social media sites said the bus belonged to the Saudi oil firm Aramco.

It was the second such incident in the oil-rich province since Saturday's execution of Nimr for "terrorism."
A nice little civil war along traditional lines would certainly gladden the hearts of the Mad Mullahs...
Late Sunday, police came under "heavy fire" that killed one person in Nimr's home village.

A virulent critic of the Saudi regime, Nimr was venerated in the kingdom's Eastern Province.

His execution led to Shiite protests in several Muslim countries and attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Riyadh's regional rival Tehran.

On Sunday Soddy Arabia

Libyan terror suspects nabbed in Genoa
Tunis, 5 January 2016:

Italian police say that on Sunday they arrested three Libyans terror suspects who had arrived in Genoa on a ferry from Tunis.

Each man was understood to be driving an identical Hyundai vehicle and none had any luggage. The suspects, aged 50,43 and 39 have not been identified. They are being investigated in connection with money laundering linked to international terrorism.

It is being alleged that investigators found pictures of weapons and guerrilla warfare on their mobile phones.

It is likely that the men arrived in Genoa onboard that Italian-flagged ro-ro passenger vessel Excellent, which runs regularly between the Italian port and Tunis, each voyage taking 24 hours.

Afghanistan
Kabul Attack Left 2 Dead, 36 Wounded
The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Tuesday said that Monday night's explosion in Kabul left two dead and 36 wounded; however, eye witnesses say they saw at least six bodies, two of which were local shopkeepers.

MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said they have started investigations into the incident.

"The explosion occurred between two foreign camps. Police arrived in the area after a short time and helped take the wounded to hospital and helped those who were affected by the incident," he said.

It is said that the attack has some similarities with the Shah Shaheed truck bombing incident in September last year. This explosion killed 14 people and wounded more than 400 others.

On Tuesday, police kept the Hawa Shinasi area east of Hamid Karzai International Airport cordoned off to the public – allowing no one access to the blast site.

Meanwhile, eye witnesses and residents said they saw the bodies of at least six people including an Afghan security guard and two shopkeepers.

"The blast was very heavy. An interpreter for foreigners said that [many] tons of explosives were used in the attack," said Tamim, the owner of a restaurant in the area.

"Five to six bodies were there that could not be recognized. I took them to the car – myself," said an eye witness.

Residents also said their houses had been damaged by the explosion.

"Lots of damage has been inflicted to the [foreign] camps and to civilian houses as well," said Shafiullah, owner of a car park in the area.

"After the blast I left my house. My mother and sister were wounded by [flying] glass," said Roeena, a resident of Hawa Shinasi area.

#2  When Spanish Jesuits brought to the New World a Liberation Theology that had been rejected in Europe, their Marxist-tainted movement found particularly fertile ground in two places --Paraguay and Argentina. In time, even Paraguay rejected the movement while it lived on in Argentina. In the Southern Cone few trust an Argentinian and no one trusts an Argentine prelate. However, the Vatican seemed blissfully unaware of that situation.

After Islamic State collapse in Ramadi, militants intensify siege of Haditha

[WASHINGTONPOST] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
snuffies have launched a deadly offensive against security forces in a key part of western Iraq, residents and tribal fighters said Tuesday, unleashing a wave of boom-mobiles and seizing an area near one of the country's largest dams.

The fresh attacks in Haditha district have set off some of the fiercest fighting in that area in months -- and follow the stunning defeat of the Islamic State in the nearby city of Ramadi in December. An Iraqi army offensive backed by U.S. Arclight airstrikes forced the jihadists to retreat from Ramadi last month, marking a devastating blow for a group striving to expand its Islamic "caliphate."

But this week, the snuffies turned their guns on Haditha, a strategic area about 90 miles northwest of Ramadi and home to Iraq's second-largest hydroelectric dam. U.S. troops are also training Iraqi forces at the Ayn al-Asad military base just 20 miles away. The snuffies have had Haditha encircled for more than a year.

Haditha, in Anbar province, holds both symbolic and strategic significance. The district is one of the last government redoubts amid swaths of bully boy-held territory in the desert of western Iraq. And its six-mile-long dam generates power for large tracts of the country, granting whoever controls it influence over much of Iraq's electricity and water supplies.

group in the region of Haditha in Anbar province, security sources said Tuesday.

"We have given 25 deaders in 72 hours," a tribal commander, Sheikh Abdallah Atallah, told AFP by phone from Haditha, an area that includes a key dam and has held off IS since 2014.

"It was one of the biggest offensives we have seen. It came from three directions," he said, adding that dozens were also maimed.

The mayor of Haditha, located about 200 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of Baghdad, confirmed the casualty toll.

"We have more than 20 deaders and more than 50 maimed. They are from the army, CTS (the counter-terrorism service), the police and the tribal fighters," Mabrouk Hamid said.

Tearful Obama Details Executive Actions in Effort to Curb Gun Violence
[ABCNEWS.GO] President B.O. unveiled several measures today intended to advance his gun safety agenda, saying he could not wait for an end to political gridlock to pursue efforts to reduce gun violence.

"The constant excuses for inaction no longer do. No longer suffice. That's why we're here today," Obama said as he addressed a room full of gun safety advocates and survivors of gun violence from the East Room of the White House.

"Not to debate the last mass shooting, but to do something to try to prevent the next one."

He added: "Until we have a Congress that's in line with the majority of Americans, there are actions within my legal authority that we can take to help reduce gun violence to save more lives."

Police nab man who vandalized Florida mosque
[ARABNEWS] Titusville Police detectives have made an arrest in connection with the New Year's Day vandalism of The Islamic Society of Central Florida Masjid Al-Munin Mosque.

Michael Scott Wolfe, 35, of Titusville, was incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
Monday evening in Titusville, and charged with criminal mischief to a mosque, a third degree felony.

The evidence revealed Wolfe, wearing camouflage clothing, entered the mosque carport at 11 p.m. and destroyed property with a machete and placed raw bacon in and around the front door. He was caught on surveillance camera breaking windows, cameras and lights with a machete at a mosque and leaving bacon on the doorstep.

Wolfe was transported to the Brevard County Jail. He is being held on a $2,000 bail. He is expected to appear before a judge Tuesday.

Prior to the arrest, the leader of the mosque said the act was not typical of city area Muslims call home.

"You can't help but feel this is a hateful act. All of the negative media, the politicians who want to ban Muslims, close mosques...messages like that motivate people who have an illness in their heart," said Muhammad Musri, who is based in the Orlando area and who oversees a network of 10 mosques as part of the Islamic Society of Central Brevard.

Musri, who in public comments has called on Muslims to build stronger ties with the communities they live in, was at the Masjid Al-Munin mosque in Titusville overseeing the cleanup from vandalism that happened overnight Friday.

It was the third time in less than a month that vandals have left pork products at mosques in the US, said the civil rights group Council on American-Islamic Relations
... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ...
(CAIR
...designated a terrorist group by the UAE...
), which has called for state and federal investigations.

Other civil rights advocates are also calling on state and federal authorities to investigate.

"People are afraid to take their children back to the mosque...a machete was used," said Rasha Mubarak, the Orlando Regional Coordinator for the CAIR. "They know we don't consume pork. This is something that those who are Islamaphobic tend to bring up or use," Mubarak said. Because of that, CAIR officials said it was an indicator of a bias motive in targeting the mosque.

Gunmen attack Turkish building near Mogadishu airport
At least one person was killed and another was wounded when heavily armed unknown gunmen attacked a compound near Mogadishu airport that housing Turkish nationals, residents said. A resident told Radio Shabelle that they woke up late on Monday night to a heavy gunfire exchanging between security guards at the Turkish building and assailants.

“One attacker was killed and a security guard slightly wounded in the attack on the residence for the Turkish nationals near Mogadishu international airport,” said a resident.

The gunmen reportedly sped-off in a minivan after they were overpowered in the gunfight.

Turkish interests and diplomatic missions in Somalia have been repeatedly targeted by Al-Shabaab. Last Friday, a Turkish national working for a construction company was wounded when he was attacked while leaving a mosque after Friday prayers by gunmen in a speeding car.

's Sunni-ruled but Shiite-majority ally Bahrain followed Riyadh's suit on Tuesday and cut all air links with Iran across the Gulf, official media reported.

The decision comes a day after Manama broke off diplomatic relations with Tehran amid an escalating crisis between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic republic over the execution of a Shiite holy man.

The official BNA news agency said on its Twitter account that the kingdom's civil aviation authority had "decided to stop flights to and from Iran."

despite the spat.

Saudi Arabia cut all ties with Iran on Sunday following an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

The attack was prompted by Saudi Arabia's execution of Shiite preacher Nimr al-Nimr, provoking outrage from Iran.

When asked what it would take for ties to be restored, Saudi U.N. Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi told news hounds: "Very simple - Iran to cease and desist from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, including our own."

He added, "If they do so, we will of course have normal relations with Iran. We are not natural-born enemies of Iran."

On Monday, Bahrain and Sudan cut all ties with Iran, following Riyadh's example. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Rooters that Riyadh would also halt air traffic and commercial relations between the rival powers.

Jubeir blamed Iran's "aggressive policies" for the diplomatic action, alluding to years of tension that spilled over on Saturday night when Iranian protesters stormed the kingdom's embassy in Tehran.

The UAE partially downgraded its relations but the other Gulf Arab countries - Kuwait, Qatar

Saudi Blocks Al-Manar Website

[ALMANAR.LB] The Saudi Culture and Information Ministry blocked on Tuesday Al-Manar Website across the kingdom.

KSA's measure against Al-Manar Website was not surprising as it was taken by an intolerable regime that committed the heinous crime of executing Sheikh Nimr Nimr for expressing his free opinion.

The Saudi ministry followed Arabsat which, ordered by KSA authorities, blocked Al-Manar and Al-Mayadeen TV channels' broadcasting.

KSA blocked Al-Manar Website because it contributed to exposing the takfiri

Kuwait Recalls Envoy from Iran

[ALMANAR.LB] Kuwait became Tuesday the latest Gulf Arab state to recall its ambassador from Iran, as tensions between Riyadh and Tehran rise over the execution of Saudi prominent holy man, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The announcement comes a day after Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Bahrain severed ties with Iran this week. And the United Arab Emirates has recalled its ambassador and downgraded ties with the Islamic republic.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
Kuwait did not expel Tehran's ambassador or downgrade the level of diplomatic relationship with Iran like the other Gulf states.

Saudi authorities announced on Saturday it had executed Sheikh Nimr. He was a vocal supporter of the mass pro-democracy protests against Riyadh, which erupted in Eastern Province in 2011, where a Shia majority has long complained of marginalization.

Following the execution of Sheikh Nimr, Saudi missions in Iran were attacked by protesters who were angered by the move.

The attacks "represent a flagrant breach of international agreements and norms and a grave violation of Iran's international commitments for the security of diplomatic missions and the safety of diplomats," the official KUNA news agency cited the Kuwaiti foreign ministry as saying.

Iranian officials have said some 50 people were detained over the incidents outside the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad.

Home Front: WoT
Pac Fleet shrinks over past decade
The U.S. Pacific Fleet is shrinking even as the U.S. and its allies are facing challenges posed by China's growing military power. U.S. Navy officials say the more advanced ships of today make up for the decline in numbers. But the Navy has also had to lengthen deployments and postpone maintenance to maintain its presence with fewer ships.

Peter Jennings, an expert at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute think tank, said the issue in peacetime is whether there are enough American vessels to reassure friends and allies.

"I think this is emerging as a serious long-term problem," he said.

The Pacific Fleet currently has 182 vessels, including combat ships like aircraft carriers as well as auxiliary and logistics vessels, said spokesman Cmdr. Clay Doss. That compares to 192 nearly two decades ago.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy has more than 300 surface ships, submarines, amphibious ships and patrol craft, according to the Pentagon's Asia-Pacific Maritime Security Strategy report released in August.
The Chinese ships are generally less capable and older generation, though as the old saying goes, there's a certain quality to quantity...
This all comes as China has grown more aggressive in asserting claims to islands also claimed by U.S. allies, including the Philippines in the South China Sea and Japan in the East China Sea. Since December 2013, China has built what the U.S. estimates to be 3,000 acres of artificial islands in disputed areas of the South China Sea using sand dredged from the ocean floor.

Questions about whether the Pacific Fleet has enough resources are more of a reflection of regional anxieties than the Navy's actual capability, said its commander, Adm. Scott Swift.

"I'm very comfortable with the resources I have," Swift said.
He has to say that...
He pointed to the USS Benfold, a guided missile destroyer upgraded with new ballistic missile defenses, as well as three new stealth destroyers, the DDG-1000, in the pipeline, as examples.

One consequence of a smaller fleet has been more time at sea. Retired Adm. Zap Zlatoper, who commanded the Pacific Fleet in the 1990s, said deployments longer than six months made it harder for the Navy to retain sailors. Ships now deploy for an average of seven to nine months, though the Navy plans to lower this to seven.

Ship conditions have also suffered. The USS Essex left an exercise with Australia early in 2011 and skipped another with Thailand the following year because it developed mechanical problems after delaying maintenance to stay at sea.

Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a Washington think tank, said these are signs the status quo is unsustainable. In a November report, Clark outlined alternatives: build more ships, though this would require money Congress may not give the Navy, or deploy less, though the Pentagon has been reluctant to accept less of an overseas presence.

The other choices: keep more ships at overseas bases where they would be closer to where they operate or mix up how ships deploy. One example would be to send fewer escorts with an aircraft carrier.
No carrier driver will accept that. The other choice not mentioned is to make fewer commitments and have our allies in the region take on more of the burden.

Cologne police have 'no leads' on sex attacks
Police in Cologne have "no leads" on the perpetrators behind dozens of sex attacks committed against women in the western cathedral city on New Year's Eve, officials said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"At the moment we have no leads about the perpetrators," city police chief Wolfgang Albers told journalists in a joint press conference with recently-elected mayor Henriette Reker.

But he and Reker were able to clear up some details which had become muddled in the wake of the huge amount of media attention to the attacks – attention that first began on Monday, or several days after the attacks.

Police explained that a large group of 400-600 youts young men had gathered around the cathedral starting at 9pm, drinking alcohol and loosing off fireworks.
You were expecting 'refugees' to be doing something else, like attending to their families or looking for work?
As the group grew in number to around 1,000 people and became more unruly, police took the decision to clear them from the area – calming the situation until around quarter to one in the morning, although the men from the group were still present in numerous smaller gatherings around the city centre.

By 1am, the police commander on the ground had received several reports of sexual attacks on women. He ordered all the officers in the area to gather around the station to warn, escort and protect women into the station, while federal officers did the same inside the station.
Notice that he didn't issue any orders to arrest anyone...
Albers specifically countered reports that the group of sex attackers had been 1,000 strong.

"There were not 1,000 perpetrators," he said, but rather a gathering of people among whom were the perpetrators – although he could not say on Tuesday how many people were responsible.
Nor is he ever going to find out...
Police had been "correctly positioned" and responded quickly to news of trouble, Albers said - despite the fact that the police report issued at 8.57am on New Year's Day had spoken of a "jolly atmosphere" in the city.

Questions remain about how to prevent the same thing from happening again at large events, particularly the traditional high points of carnival season in early February.
I can think of a couple things the police and politicians could do...
"I am convinced that more uniformed police at large events in the city will discourage a repeat of what happened," a visibly moved Reker told reporters. "We have to make better use of the tools at our disposal."

Cologne must remain a city "in which anyone can celebrate", Reker said.

Reker insisted that there was "no evidence that we are dealing with people who have received accommodation here in Cologne as refugees."
Reker didn't look, either...
She added that women in the city should take steps to try and reduce the risk of being attacked – something that was quickly seized on for criticism by women online.
You could ask the wimmin to wear burqas and to be escorted by their brothers...
"I've noted the right behaviour manual for you: lads, don't be arseholes. Don't harass any women. You're welcome." one person wrote.
The best behavior manual would be a knife in the ribs to each perpetrator...
"I feel obliged to ask Henriette Reker for the behavioural manual for men at the carnival," another person tweeted.

Turkey assassinates three Kurdish female activists in Sirnak
[ARA] Amid the continuous military operations by the Turkish forces in the southeastern Kurdish province of Sirnak, three prominent female political activists were reported dead on Tuesday.

Turkish security forces rubbed out the three Kurdish activists in Silopi town of Sirnak province.

Sêvê Demir, member of the Democratic Regions Party (BDP), Pakize Nayir, co-leader of the People's Council in Silopi, and Fatma Uyar, member of the Free Woman Union were found dead subsequent to a security raid in Silopi town on Tuesday.

The liquidation of the three Kurdish female activists raised the outrage of the Kurdish parties in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
The People's Democratic Party (HDP) and the Democratic Regions Party (BDP) issued a joint statement condemning the liquidation.

"This crime confirms the brutality of the authorities against the Kurdish people and the peaceful activists. Those women have been struggling for the legitimate civil rights of their people," it said.

Under the pretext of combating rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the Turkish army and security forces have been waging fierce operations against the Kurdish towns of Cizre and Silopi in the southeastern province of Sirnak for weeks.

Local sources argued that the Turkish operations aim at punishing the entire Kurdish population in the region for alleged cooperation with the PKK.

Europe
Mayor of Cologne: women should have code of conduct to prevent future assault
The Mayor of Cologne said today that women should adopt a “code of conduct” to prevent future assault at a crisis meeting following the sexual attack of women by 1000 men on New Year’s eve.

Mayor Henriette Reker attended an emergency meeting with Chief of Police Wolfgang Albers and Wolfgang Wurm to discuss how to deal with the attack, where dozens of women were repeatedly touched and groped, with one case of alleged rape in the center of town.

“It is important to prevent such incidents from ever happening again,” said Mayor Reker, as reported in German by RP Online. “We have heard by now that they [the attacks] have occurred in other cities. This of course is not comforting to us.”

The crisis management team said prevention measures should include a code of conduct for young women and girls, and Mayor Reker said the existing code of conduct will be updated online.
Burqas, either black or blue, and escort by a male relative at all times. Wimmin shouldn't drive either. No makeup, jewelry, fingernail polish or pumps. Best just to stay at home according to the good mayor...
The suggested code of conduct includes maintaining an arm’s length distance from strangers, to stick within your own group, to ask bystanders for help or to intervene as a witness, or to inform the police if you are the victim of such an assault.
Inform the police if you're assaulted? I'll bet that never occurred to anyone...
In anticipation of large carnivals in the city centre in February, Mayor Reker promised an increased police presence. She warned young women about potential dangers of drunken events.

Mayor Reker also said a “better explanation” to asylum seekers was needed about the meaning of the annual carnivals. “We need to prevent confusion about what constitutes happy behaviour and what is utterly separate from openness, especially in sexual behaviour," she said.
Because separating clean fun from sexual assault is such a confusing thing at a carnival...
The attackers were described as North African and Arab appearance by the police. The Mayor has said that not all of the attackers were newly-arrived refugees and had already been known to the police, as reported by The Local.
Why should the new refugees have all the fun?

#6  Women of Germany - if you are attacked sue the Government for compensation

they let in the Islamists

They knew - or should have known given the public speeches on record - that Islamists regularly preach that Western women are fair game for sexual predation.

Islamists teach their followers that muslims are superior to non-muslims

hijabi women are modest and to be respected

those not wearing a hijab are sluts and you can do what you like with them

this is taught to young men and you can see the result. A sense of entitlement and sexual predation.

Secular muslims hate this and do not want a bar of it.

The problem is Islamist supremacism

So women of Germany - make your government pay. Start documenting attacks. Take photos and screenshots of mosques and imams preaching that hijabis deserve more respect than non-hijabis

only if your government is forced to pay you compensation will they ever change their policy

#16  I realize that these women were caught off guard, but didn't any of them try the good old go-for-the-gold tactic

My conclusion, based on what I've read about this incident as well as what happened to women on Tahrir Square is that the miscreants swarmed to isolate individuals, and then swarmed to assault each one, often pinning them down or lifting them off the ground. Under such circumstqnces, grabbing anything would be difficult. As for the men, I have to imagine -- knowing the cultures involved, that at least some of them were similarly molested, and the rest also were swarmed at the very least. Not the kind of thing many would complain about, nor would the reporters be very interested.

India-Pakistan
After Pathankot
[DAWN] THERE is much that is uncertain about the immediate state of India-Pakistain relations, but at least one thing is clear: for all the outstanding, bilateral issues, terrorism has forced its way to the front again. At the very highest and official levels, both sides continue to be measured and cooperative in their responses. The telephone call yesterday between prime ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
suggests that the political establishments at least are willing to see if the diplomatic approach can yield results. Whatever evidence, if any, India finds about the involvement of Pakistain-based actors in the Pathankot IAF base attack should be shared promptly and in full with Islamabad. Then, as Mr Sharif has pledged, Pakistain should investigate urgently, and take action where necessary. Already, though, there has been a public lead provided -- and possibly a gauntlet thrown down to the Pak state. The claim by Syed Sadaqat Husain, a spokesperson for the United Jihad Council, an umbrella jihadi group based in Azad Kashmire, that the UJC is responsible for the Pathankot incident has created several problems for Pakistain.

Whether the UJC did in fact launch the attack or not -- a hitherto unknown branch of the UJC, the National Highway Squad, has been credited with the attack -- the claim will invariably draw yet more scrutiny of anti-India bully boyz based inside Pakistain, and in Kashmire in particular. The UJC leadership, which has with varying degrees of success put together a disparate group of bully boyz over the past two decades, is believed to be politically close to the Pak state, but its role in militancy has been doubtful for many years, particularly since the Musharraf-era freeze on cross-LoC attacks. Has that changed? Or have elements inside the UJC gone rogue? If the state wants to convey that it speaks with one voice and that dialogue resumption between India and Pakistain is the result of a consultative process and consensus decision-making, then it must demonstrate that the UJC claim is being taken seriously. It cannot be that Mr Sharif tells his Indian counterpart that gunnies always try and derail the grinding of the peace processor between the two countries, and then the state here tries to sweep under the carpet the claims of an armed attack made by a group whose leadership is based in Pakistain. If the UJC claim is a ruse, it should be exposed as such. If not, the architects of the Pathankot attack need to be brought to justice.

Officials survive Aden car bomb; 3 officers die
[ARABNEWS] Three senior southern Yemeni officials survived a suicide car bomb attack on their convoy in Aden and a subsequent gun battle that killed three of their guards on Tuesday, a government spokesman and security sources said.

The incident highlights the security chaos in the port city, the temporary seat of Yemen’s embattled government, as its loyalists seek to wrest the capital Sanaa from the Iran-allied Houthi movement with support from a Saudi-led coalition.

“A suicide bomber in a car detonated as the convoy of the governors of Aden and Lahj provinces along with the Aden security director passed through the area of Inma,” Nizar Anwar, a government spokesman said.

Three soldiers were killed in the exchange of fire which followed the attack, sources said, before the assailants retreated into the surrounding desert.

Aidaroos Al-Zubairi was appointed governor of Aden after his predecessor was killed in a car bomb attack on Dec. 6 claimed by Daesh, the latest attack by the new Yemen branch of the militant group against government targets.

Daesh has stepped up operations since the outbreak of civil war in Yemen, emerging as a forceful rival to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the main militant group in the country in recent years.

Security officials have launched a crackdown on suspected militants, imposing a curfew and arresting at least 70 suspects overnight, sources said.

Afghanistan
Militants Still Active In Outskirts Of Kunduz City
One hundred days after the fall of Kunduz, militants continue to create problems on the outskirts of the city.

Kunduz Police Chief Qasim Jangalbagh said on Tuesday that plans are however in place to bring an end to this problem.

Jangalbagh said: "Taliban militants are operating on the outskirts of the city but we have plans to stop them and eliminate them."

Meanwhile, tribal elders and residents of the province warned that if government fails to ensure security in the city, the city might fall again to the Taliban.

The militants also have a widespread presence in different districts of Kunduz province, said locals and Dasht-e-Archi and Imam Saheb districts have reportedly turned into a hub for insurgents.

It is here that the Taliban not only keeps armored vehicles and other military equipment they seized during the fall of the city but the group has also allegedly established training centres in these districts.

Hajji Ghulam Sakhi, a tribal elder, said: "Security forces are operating inside the city but on the outside, there are Taliban militants."

A number of army officials in the province said that they are still on the defensive especially as the Taliban has armored vehicles.

But another problem Kunduz locals face is the lack of telecommunication services at night.

"Our cell phone coverage is disconnected at 6pm in the evening until 6am in the morning," said Farhad, a resident of Kunduz city.

In addition, residents said the militants wield so much power in the city that if telecommunication service providers do not follow their orders, the insurgents challenge their activities.

The acting governor of Kunduz, Hamdullah Danesh, said: "The decision to disconnect cell phone coverage was taken after night operations started by security forces in order to make our operations effective."

Even though it has been 100 days since the fall of the city to the Taliban, the tragic incident still haunts its residents and living in peace, they say, is still a dream.

Samiullah, a resident of Kunduz city, said: "We cannot get out of the city but the president [Ashraf Ghani] speaks out about security in our province."

After the fall of Kunduz city, President Ashraf Ghani paid a visit to the province and made a number of promises to residents. One of the main promises he made during his visit to Kunduz city was to bring back security to the city.

"The president has not fulfilled even one of his promises he made for Kunduz. We hope the government implements its promises," said Muhammad Nasim, a tribal elder.

After the collapse of the city to the Taliban, Ghani assigned a fact-finding commission to explore reasons behind the crisis. The team, in a 200-page report, explained the reasons behind the collapse; however, the report has still not been made public. Instead, a 40-page abbreviated version was released.

To answer the question as that why the team did not release the report, Amrullah Saleh, head of the fact finding team, wrote on his facebook page that he did only what he was assigned to do.

Fatema Azizi, a lawmaker from Kunduz, said: "It is not clear yet where the report of the fact finding team is. The report said there are some figures in the Presidential Palace that were involved in the fall of Kunduz city. Why has government not yet taken a decision in this regard?"

Taliban seized control of Kunduz city in September 2015 for three days before security forces moved in and retook control of the city.

Arabia
Riyadh's provocation
[DAWN] IT is difficult to imagine what exactly the Saudi authorities were thinking when they decided to put Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr to the sword at the turn of the year, alongside 46 other men, while simultaneously announcing an end to the barely heeded ceasefire in Yemen.

It's not just Iran that had warned of repercussions in the event of al-Nimr's execution, after he was sentenced to death in 2014. UN Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon pitched in with a plea for clemency and Amnesia Amnesty International declared the trial that led to his conviction to have been a farce.

This wasn't a grievous error, though. It was a deliberate provocation. The Saudis were mightily miffed, just like Israel, by the West's nuclear deal with Iran. Any effort to prove that it was deeply flawed would therefore make strategic sense. What would be more appropriate, in the context, than stirring it up into a lather of fury?

That's not the only context, though. The Saudis are displeased by the way things are going in Syria, with Russia pitching in on behalf of Bashir al-Assad and the West seemingly inclined to think this might be its best bet in combating the krazed killer Islamic State

group. The fact that Nimr vehemently opposed Assad appears not to have been taken into consideration.

Or at least it wasn't enough to vindicate his ostensibly pro-democracy stance, which put him on a collision course with Riyadh -- specifically in the context of Bahrain, where an intervention by Soddy Arabia

we were later instructed to carry out attacks on governmental buildings. Then we begun to question this order to bomb Ankara courthouses, Parliament and cop shoppes and gave up on the plan. While looking for a place to dispose of the bombs and ammunition we were caught by the police," the turbans reportedly said during the police interrogation.

Anti-terrorism police in Ankara had reportedly been closely following Canöz and Yildirim for three months before they detained them in late December.

The raid came after the police deciphered the final message in a series sent by Enes, who is of Arab origin. During the raids, police seized hand-made explosives and bomb-making equipment produced by the two krazed killers.

According to another report released by the Hurriyet daily on Jan. 1, the instruction was given to the two potential jacket wallahs by a leading ISIL figure with the code name Ebu Enes, who is known to be a sheikh. It was also noted that the bully boyz came to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

from Syria in September of last year where the attack was planned.

Nawaz-Modi call: India urges Pakistan to act after Pathankot airbase attack
Because after 96 tries, this time it will surely work.
[DAWN] Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
Tuesday to take "firm and immediate action" against those behind an attack on an Indian Air Force base that left seven soldiers dead.

Modi's office said New Delhi had given Islamabad "specific and actionable information" on the audacious attack, which came just days after a landmark visit to Pakistain by the Indian premier raised hopes of improved relations.

Security officials suspect the gunnies -- all six of whom were killed -- belonged to the Pakistain-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group that staged a 2001 attack on the Indian parliament which brought the two countries to the brink of war.

In a statement, Modi's office said PM Nawaz Sharif had telephoned him to discuss the attack on the Pathankot base in the northern state of Punjab

2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

near the border with Pakistain.

Modi "strongly emphasised the need for Pakistain to take firm and immediate action against the organizations and individuals responsible for and linked to the Pathankot terrorist attack," said the statement.

"Specific and actionable information in this regard has been provided to Pakistain." It said Sharif had given assurances that his government would take "prompt and decisive action".

A statement from PM Nawaz Sharif's office said he conveyed his grief and sorrow to Modi for the lives lost during the Pathankot attack.

Sharif said hard boyz will not be allowed to derail the grinding of the peace processor between the two countries and assured his Indian counterpart that Pakistain will investigate any leads or information provided by the government of India.

Iran flaunts second underground missile facility
[IsraelTimes] Photos of base for long-range projectiles come days after general says Iran has so many missiles, it doesn't have room to store them

Iran on Tuesday unveiled a second underground missile storage facility, days after the United States threatened to impose fresh sanctions over the country's missile program.

The Tasnim News Agency carried photos of parliament speaker Ali Larijani touring the base, which it said housed long-range Emad ballistic missiles and was not the same one the Iranians unveiled in October.

At last week's Friday prayers, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said the Islamic Theocratic Republic has so many missiles, it doesn't know where to store them.

"We lack enough space in our stockpiles to house our missiles," said General Hossein Salami, the Guards' deputy, as a row with the US over Iran's ballistic missile program deepened.

"Hundreds of long tunnels are full of missiles ready to fly to protect your integrity, independence and freedom," he told worshipers in Tehran, promising to never "stop developing our defense deterrent."

Iranian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
aired in October unprecedented footage of such an underground missile base.

The general's comments came after reports that the US had plans -- later shelved -- to unveil a fresh round of sanctions following two recent missile tests by the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

The mooted financial penalties on companies and individuals in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates, for apparent links to Tehran's missile program, highlighted worsening US-Iran relations.

They also put in jeopardy a landmark deal struck in July between Iran and six world powers including the US, which is due to be formally implemented within weeks.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani denounced the US moves Thursday as "hostile and illegal interventions" that must be met with a response.

He ordered the military to intensify its missile development and take whatever steps necessary to start new programs if they would better serve Iran's defense.

After Rouhani's comments the White House put the sanctions on hold indefinitely, The Wall Street Journal reported, though officials said the measures remained on the table for use if necessary.

The specter of new penalties against Iran -- the nuclear deal is due to lift existing sanctions that froze Iran out of the global financial system and crippled its oil exports -- brought worsening relations to a head.

A United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
panel last month said the two missile tests breached previous resolutions aimed at stopping the Islamic republic from developing projectiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

Iran has always denied seeking an atomic weapon and argues that its missiles would never be designed to, nor ever carry, such a bomb.

The nuclear deal is due to come into effect on "Implementation Day," expected later this month, or soon after, when UN monitors sign off that Iran has applied major curbs to its atomic program.

Suspected Bus Attack in China Kills 14
[ALMANAR.LB] Fourteen people were burned to death and 32 injured after a public bus went up in flames in a suspected arson attack in China on Tuesday, state media said.

Police have identified a suspect in the incident, according to a post on a verified social media account of state broadcaster CCTV.

The broadcaster posted pictures of the 33-year-old man and personal identifying information, adding that police were "investigating and pursuing" him for his role in "a serious crime". It did not give any indication of a possible motive.

Earlier, officials in Yinchuan, the capital of the remote Ningxia region where the incident occurred, said only that the bus had "suddenly caught fire" near a public square.

A total of 32 people were being treated in hospital, according to CCTV, with eight suffering from "serious injuries".

In past years, there have been several cases of attacks on Chinese public transportation, especially buses.

In 2013 a suicidal man started a fire on a bus in eastern China that killed 47 people including himself, state media said.
Update from An Nahar at 11:15 a.m. ET:
A man suspected of setting a public bus on fire in northern China, burning 17 people to death, had told friends he planned violence, reports said Wednesday, citing social media postings in which he agonized over unpaid debts.

Police captured Ma Yongping, 33, Tuesday after the blaze engulfed the vehicle in flames in Yinchuan, the capital of remote Ningxia region.

Ma, a college graduate who had studied in Japan, had accumulated more than 300,000 yuan ($46,000) in debts while a contractor on an engineering project, much of it salaries for his workers, according to an article on Chinese news site Sina which was removed shortly after it appeared on Wednesday.

The company refused to pay him, it said, and according to the Beijing Youth Daily, on the morning of the attack he sent a message to friends on chat application WeChat saying: "At a time when even a person's basic rights can't be guaranteed, he has a right to take action to fight for (them)."

Under interrogation, Ma told police he purchased two jerry cans of petrol at a filling station and used a lighter to set the bus aflame, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Chinese citizens have sometimes turned to violence against innocents in attempts to publicize their plight after failing to obtain redress for low-level disputes.
Mr. Ma is not a jihadi, so moved to Page 3: Non-WoT.

5.1 Mag Quake Detected At Nork Nuclear Test Site
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake detected near North Korea's nuclear test site appears to have been artificial, according to South Korea's meteorological service, raising the prospect the isolated regime tested a nuclear device. As Bloomberg reports, the "earthquake" follows North Korea's threat in September that it is ready to use atomic weapons against the U.S. at any time and that its main nuclear facility was fully operational. The Pentagon is reportedly "looking into" the quake reports.
