State Spokeshole Kirby Refuses to Confirm or Deny Dummy Hellfire Sold To Cuba
One day after the Wall Street Journal revealed that a dummy U.S. hellfire missile was mistakenly shipped from Europe to Cuba in 2014, the State Department refuses to deny whether or not it was sold to the Cuban government.
uh oh
sold? SOLD?? SOOOLLLLDDD?????
"I am restricted, under federal law and regulations, from commenting on the specific defense trade, licensing cases and compliance matters," State Department spokesman John Kirby said during a press conference Friday.

"What I can say is under the Arms Export Control Act, the State Department licenses both permanent and temporary exports by U.S. companies of regulated defense articles," Kirby added.
What does the Act say about selling arms to Cuba?
The State Department spokesman went on to say that it is U.S. companies that are responsible for documenting their shipping logistics and are responsible for reporting any shipping deviations to the federal government. Previous reports indicated that Lockheed has been attributed with the shipping error that lead to the improper shipment.

When pressed for more detail, Kirby said he's "not at liberty to comment further." But that did not stop reporters from pressing the official on the issue.

"You're not suggesting that you actually sold this to the Cubans?" one reporter asked Kirby. "I don't understand why you can't say, 'No, we didn't sell this to the Cubans, it got there by accident by mistake.'"

"You want to leave open the possibility that our government sold or gave a hellfire missile, intentionally, to the government of Cuba?" the reporter continued, seemingly agitated.

The missile, now allegedly in Cuban possession, did not contain explosives, according to the Journal, but there are concerns over the certainty potential for the Cubans to share the defense technology with U.S. adversaries like North Korea or Iran Russia.

U.S. officials have been urging the Cuban government to return the missile. In addition, the U.S. government is reportedly investigating whether or not the missile's disappearance was an intentional act of espionage.

The United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations in July 2015 after more than 50 years of hostility.
Thanks, Obama!

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia raids on Qaeda-run Syria prison kill at least 39
[Daily Star Lebanon] BEIRUT: Russian strikes Saturday on a prison complex run by Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate in the country's northwest killed at least 39 people, including five civilians, a monitoring group said.

The strikes hit an Al-Nusra Front building, which lies near a popular market in Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The building housed the group's religious court and a jail. Most of those killed were rebels imprisoned by Al-Nusra, while other victims included prison guards and Al-Nusra fighters. Among the dead were five civilians, including a child.

Russian warplanes have been conducting airstrikes against the ISIS organisation and "other terrorist groups" in Syria since September 30. Although Al-Nusra and ISIS are both extremist organisations, they are fierce rivals and regularly clash in Syria.

Al-Nusra also has tense relationships with non-extremist rebel groups that oppose its extreme interpretation of Islamic law.

In Idlib, it has formed an alliance with rebel groups, including hardline faction Ahrar al-Sham. The Army of Conquest coalition has expelled regime forces from Idlib province. The Britain-based Observatory has an extensive network of sources inside Syria and identifies casualties by the type of aircraft flown and the munitions used.

Syria's conflict first erupted with anti-government demonstrations in March 2011 but quickly morphed into a war that has left more than 260,000 people dead.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF search dog sniffed out fugitive gunman's feces, hiding place
[JP] Teams of crack anti-terroist police commandos as well as dogs from the elite canine unit Oketz were the first to discover Nashat Milhem's hiding place in Arara, leading to his death in a shootout that brought an end to a nerve-wracking weeklong manhunt for the man who opened fire indiscriminately in central Tel Aviv on New Year's Day.

A senior IDF official confirmed to The Jerusalem Post's Hebrew-language sister publication Ma'ariv that dogs from Oketz were placed under the command of the elite YAMAM paramilitary police outfit during the search for the gunman.

The key piece of evidence that led investigators to Milhem's hideout in the Wadi Ara town of Arara on Friday was the gunman's feces, which he apparently left for Israeli search dogs to find.

The police found the human waste in the vicinity of the area where the raid took place. After it was taken to a laboratory for testing, the authorities discovered that it matched the DNA of the suspect.

Government
America Doesn't Have a Gun Problem, It Has a Democrat Problem
[Sultanknish] America's mass shooting capital isn't somewhere out west where you can get a gun at the corner store. It's in Obama's own hometown.

Chicago is America's mass shooting capital. There were over 400 shootings with more than one victim. In 95 of those shootings, 3 or more people were shot.

2,995 people were shot in Chicago last year. Shootings were up, way up, in Baltimore. With an assist from Al Sharpton and #BlackLivesMatter, Baltimore beat out Detroit. But Detroit is still in the running. Chicago, Baltimore and Detroit all have something in common, they're all run by the party of gun control which somehow can't seem to manage to control the criminals who have the guns.

The murder rate in Washington, D.C., home of the progressive boys and girls who can solve it all, is up 54%. The capital of the national bureaucracy has also been the country's murder capital.

hese cities are the heartland of America's real gun culture. It isn't the bitter gun-and-bible clingers in McCain and Romney territory who are racking up a more horrifying annual kill rate than Al Qaeda; it's Obama's own voting base.

Gun violence is at its worst in the cities that Obama won in 2012. Places like New Orleans, Memphis, Birmingham, St. Louis, Kansas City and Philly. The Democrats are blaming Republicans for the crimes of their own voters.

Chicago, where Obama delivered his victory speech, has homicide numbers that match all of Japan and are higher than Spain, Poland and pre-war Syria. If Chicago gets any worse, it will find itself passing the number of murders for the entire country of Canada.

Chicago's murder rate of 15.09 per 100,000 people looks nothing like the American 4.2 rate, but it does look like the murder rates in failed countries like Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. To achieve Chicago's murder rate, African countries usually have to experience a bloody genocidal civil war.

But Chicago isn't even all that unique. Or the worst case scenario. That would be St. Louis with 50 murders for 100,000 people. If St Louis were a country, it would have the 4th highest murder rate in the world, beating out Jamaica, El Salvador and Rwanda.

Obama won St. Louis 82 to 16 percent.

Philly Mayor: Islamic State Cop Shooter 'Does Not Represent' Islam
[Breitbart] He began by expressing his well-wishes for the officer who the Muslim man attempted to execute, but then spent the latter part of his statement distancing Islam from the shooter, who claimed he was carrying out the shooting for Islam.

"In no way shape or form does anyone in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam has anything to do with what you've seen on the screen," said Mayor Kenney.

"That is abhorrent. It's just terrible and it does not represent this religion [Islam] in any way shape or form or any of its teachings," he added. "This is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers. It has nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith."

#9  From a local television station:

Action News has learned that 30-year-old Edward Archer traveled twice in recent years to the Middle East, but was not on any terror watch lists.

Law enforcement sources say Archer's first trip was to Saudi Arabia in 2011 for Hajj. He then traveled to Egypt in 2012. Both trips departed from New York-area airports.

So Mr. Archer was indeed, as his mother said, a Muslim in more than name. Let me suggest that Hizzoner is full of it, and its ripest, most aromatic form.

Brit lands in Sydney after 21,000km flight in vintage biplane
[Guardian] A British aviator has touched down in Sydney, completing her 21,000km solo flight from England in a vintage open cockpit biplane.

"I need a drink. And I need a hairdresser," said Tracey Curtis-Taylor as she climbed out of her 1942 Boeing Stearman Spirit of Artemis to cheers and applause at Sydney airport on Saturday.

The 53-year-old pilot has flown across 23 countries, making 50 refuelling stops, since she set off from Farnborough, Hampshire, southern England, in October.

The pilot's mission has been to emulate pioneering British aviator Amy Johnson who became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia in 1930.

#2  Artemis was a female god who was a crack archer and Orion's lover. She was conned by her brother into killing him after he swam out into the ocean to escape a giant scorpion he had been fighting all day long. She begged Zeus to restore his life but Zeus refused so she put him in the sky. She also put the giant scorpion in the sky but on the opposite side and that's why the constellations Orion and Scorpious are not seen at the same time.

Rep. Hank 'Tip Over' Johnson: '€˜Free Market Way of Thinking Doesn't Work'
[Breitbart] Thursday on the House floor while speaking against the Sunshine For Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) decried the "free market way of thinking."

Johnson said, "There has been a movement over the last 30, 40 years to turn people against the government. This mantra is that government is too big, we don't need any rules to govern human conduct, let everything work itself out and the free market system will make it rain for everybody. Well, we've seen after 30, 40 years of practicing that free market way of thinking, that it doesn't work."

He added "This is what this legislation is about--is gutting the rule-making process. This is one of many attempts--incessant attempts--by my friends on the other side to try and cut government and so that their friends in big business on Wall Street can make it rain for the rest of us. But they don't make it rain for anybody but themselves."

#4  When your perspective is power and control (and graft), you can't comprehend a 'free market'. The natural environment of a 'free market' is chaos, it's natural selection. By its own environment, there are winners and losers. Things break and something else takes its place or picks up the pieces and it gets rolling again. There is no perfect, there is only better. Central planning and control have demonstrated repeatedly that it is not a better alternative.

It doesn't happen in other advanced countries.

Yet, despite the impression that President Obama has been creating, France suffered more casualties (murders and injuries) from mass public shootings in 2015 than the US has suffered during Obama's entire presidency (Updated 532 to 396). Note that these numbers don't adjust for the fact that the US has 4.98 times the population of France. The per capita rate of casualties in France is thus 8.19 per million and for the US it is 1.22 -- France's per capita rate of casualties is thus 6.68 times higher than the rate in the US.

Britain
UK Mother Jailed for Taking Children to Live under IS
[AnNahar] A British-born mother was jugged
Please don't kill me!
for more than five years on Friday, having tried to take her children to Syria to live under Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group rule.

The 34-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wanted to live under strict Sharia law, Leeds Crown Court in northern England was told.

She kidnapped her children in October last year with the intention of going to Raqqa, where the IS jihadist group has set up its headquarters.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
her husband and parents contacted the police and she was stopped in Istanbul by the Turkish authorities.

She admitted two counts of child abduction relating to her children, who were both under the age of 16.

"Raqqa is, and was in October 2015, the epicenter of a war zone. Further, it was, and presently remains, under the control of IS," said judge Rodney Jameson.

"It is beyond dispute that IS enforce their will by the use of extreme force. Such force routinely includes mutilation, rape and murder. You are an intelligent and well-educated woman; you knew this.

"The fate of your children would have been either to have subscribed, fully and actively, as we have all seen in the appalling use of a young child in an IS propaganda video in recent days, to such behavior, or to have suffered it themselves."

The woman was born in Britannia and spent her formative years in Pakistain before returning to northern England.

She became increasingly religious and gave up her job in finance in August last year, before attempting to take her children to Syria.

"This was a terrible betrayal of your responsibilities to your children," said Jameson.

The judge jugged
Please don't kill me!
the woman for five years and four months.

It reviewed the progress made on the information provided by India. Furthermore, it was decided to remain in touch with the Indian government in this regard.

During the meeting, it was reaffirmed that Pakistain is committed to eradicate the menace of terrorism from the region.

The participants of the meeting made it clear that the people of Pakistain have evolved a political consensus for action against all murderous Moslems and terrorist organizations without any distinction.

"They have resolved that no terrorist would be allowed to use Pakistain's soil for committing terrorism anywhere in the world," said a statement issued by PM House.

The meeting expressed the confidence that building on the goodwill generated by the recent high level contacts, the two countries would remain committed to a sustained, meaningful and comprehensive dialogue process.

India on Thursday said it is awaiting Pakistain's response on the information provided related to the Pathankot incident, following which it will decide on the resumption of bilateral peace talks scheduled for later this month.

India's foreign ministry said Islamabad has been given actionable intelligence that those who planned the assault came from Pakistain.

Seven Indian coppers and four suspected gunnies were killed during an assault, on Indian air base near the Pakistain border, which threatened to undermine the two countries' fragile grinding of the peace processor.

IDF, Shin Bet note decrease in violence in December
[IsraelTimes] Though situation can quickly change, defense officials see reduction of 25% in attacks, 31% in casualties from previous month

Though Israelis remain on edge as the hunt for the prime suspect in the Tel Aviv shooting continues, the country's security forces released data with potentially good indications for the future on Thursday, showing that the number of Paleostinian attacks in December dropped considerably in comparison to previous months.

The current round of violence hit its peak in October, with some 620 attacks, according to the Shin Bet. The vast majority of these were incidents of Molotov cocktails being thrown at cars and during violent protests. In November that figure came down to 326, and last month it went down even further, to 246, a 24.5 percent reduction, the Shin Bet revealed in a statement.

Alleged plan to assassinate prime minister thwarted by arrests
[Ynet] Two Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-linked men from East Jerusalem have been indicted for plans to make explosives and plot to detonate bomb under stage on which Netanyahu spoke.

An alleged plan by two Hamas-linked young men to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a suicide kaboom was revealed on Friday when indictments were served against the East Jerusalem residents.

Hazm Sandouka, 22, and Fahdi Abu Kian, 19, were charged with belonging to a terror organization, aiding an enemy during wartime, contact with a foreign agent and other offenses. The Jerusalem District Attorney asked to extend the suspects' remand until the end of the legal proceedings.

According to the indictment, the pair helped Ahmad Azam, a Hamas operative, in preparations for terror attacks using explosives. Azam rented an apartment in the Abu Dis neighborhood, rented tools and began purchasing chemical materials. Sandouka allegedly proposed placing a bomb in an auditorium, underneath the stage on which the prime minister was to deliver a speech. The pair planned the event but did not set a date.

The indictment detailed Hamas's planning. Azam received instructions from a Hamas operative in Gazoo, referred to as "Abu Omar" in the indictment. Contact between the two was handled via a program that sends coded messages and cell phones that were destroyed after use. Azam, according to the indictment, recruited the two other defendants at Abu Dis University.

The indictment claimed that when Azam recruited Sandouka, he asked him to commit a stabbing attack on Jews, only for Sandouka to reply that he wanted to commit a bigger attack. Azam purportedly later suggested to Sandouka that he kidnap Jews or act as a driver in a Jerusalem terror attack, to which he agreed.
The Times of Israel points out:

Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
last month after the Shin Bet uncovered a large Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terror cell that planned to carry out suicide kabooms and other terror attacks in Israel. The Shin Bet, alongside the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Police, arrested 25 Hamas operatives, the majority of them students of the al-Quds University in Abu Dis, who, they suspect, were preparing to attack Israeli targets. In a statement, the agency said the cell was controlled by the Hamas leadership in the Gazoo Strip.
It will be interesting to see how many other pots Mr. Azzam was stirring for Hamas.

How a critical error by Nashat Milhem led to his death
[IsraelTimes] Fugitive Tel Aviv gunman broke into relatives' home in Arara, and tried to hide his identity; they recognized him and informed authorities

A week-long manhunt to catch Tel Aviv shooter Nashat Milhem ended Friday after the runaway gunman made a critical mistake in his cat and mouse game with the security forces.

Milhem, who was on the run since killing three people in Tel Aviv last Friday, broke into the home of relatives in the village of Arara on Thursday night. According to Channel 10 television, the relatives encountered him on Friday morning, and at once saw through his attempt to disguise himself. He was reportedly wearing a hoodie, and he gave the relatives a false name, but they realized who it was.

The Shin Bet security service was swiftly informed of his hiding place.

Milhem's miscalculation ended up being his undoing.

On Friday morning, the relatives called lawyer Nechami Feinblatt, the public defender representing Milhem's father, Mohammed.

The father had been jugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
earlier this week on suspicion that he was complicit in planning the terror attack carried out by his son, and Feinblatt had been appointed by the state to defend him.

According to Channel 10, Milhem's relatives apparently called Feinblatt in order to pressure the gunman to turn himself in.

They told the lawyer that Milhem had broken into their home during the night, and asked him to relay the information to the Shin Bet security service.

Muhammad Milhem supported the move, telling his attorney to give the authorities every morsel of information that could help catch his son.
All praise to those Arab Israeli relatives who put civic duty before blood.
Feinblatt, bound by lawyer-client confidentiality, eventually decided to pass the information to the Shin Bet, and made sure that the relatives who called him would avoid any repercussions for Milhem's presence in their home, the TV report said.

"I don't remember if I gave you all the details," Feinblatt wrote in a text message to an unnamed Shin Bet official.

"He broke into the home of [redacted] through the window. Rummaged through the closets. The wife of [redacted] identified him. He was wearing a hoodie and holding a container of water. She identified him with certainty by his voice and walk, even though he had introduced himself by a fake name," Feinblatt wrote to the security official.

Police special forces and Shin Bet officials descended on the village on Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, one week -- almost to the minute -- after he opened fire on a bar on Tel Aviv's bustling Dizengoff Street, Nashat Milhem was dead.

Erdogan sentenced to pay legal expenses in gold toilet case
[TODAYSZAMAN] An Ankara court has ruled for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
to pay the legal expenses of main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, whom Erdogan had sued for TL 100,000 in damages for saying the president has gold toilets in his palace.

According to a report in the Hurriyet daily on Thursday, the Ankara 27th Court of First Instance announced its reasoned decision in the "gold toilet" case, which was dismissed on the first hearing. The reasoned decision said the Republican Peoples' Party (CHP) leader's remarks were criticisms of the governments' excessive expenses and should be regarded as political criticism.

The court also ruled for Erdogan to pay Kilicdaroglu's TL 10 court expenses and TL 1,500 in attorney's fees.

Kilicdaroglu claimed in May Erdogan's controversial palace had golden toilets. The president slammed the claims and invited the opposition leader, who wowed to never set foot in the palace which he and many other critics claim is illegal, to inspect the toilets in the palace. In response, the CHP reiterated its leader has no intention of visiting the "illegally built" palace.

Erdogan had filed the lawsuit against Kilicdaroglu on June 2.

Erdogan moved into the controversial 1,000-room palace complex after winning the presidential election in 2014. He was heavily criticized for residing in the palace as it was built in violation of a court decision ordering a halt on construction because it was in an environmentally protected zone.

31 Suspects in Cologne Violence, 18 of them Asylum Seekers
Cologne can stand in for all the other communities in Germany and across Europe that experienced similar excitements on New Years Eve, but whose governments, police, and journalists have neglected to say anything to the public.
[AnNahar] Thirty-one suspects, including 18 asylum seekers, are under investigation for offenses including assault and theft in Cologne on New Year's Eve with the perpetrators of sexual assaults yet to be identified, Germany's interior ministry said Friday.

"Of the 31 suspects whose names are known, 18 have asylum seeker status," said ministry front man Tobias Plate, citing federal police figures and indicating that their alleged offenses were "mostly theft and causing bodily harm".

Federal police had recorded several complaints about sexual offenses, but "the perpetrators for these have not been identified," he said.

The suspects include nine Algerians, eight Moroccans, four Syrians, five Iranians, one each from Iraq, Serbia and the United States, and two Germans, he said.

Cologne's state police have separately confirmed recording some 121 complaints of assaults, ranging from two alleged rapes to several accounts of groping, in what were apparently coordinated attacks in a large crowd of revelers during year-end festivities.

Victims blamed men of "Arab or North African" appearance, inflaming a heated public debate about Germany's ability to integrate the nearly 1.1 million asylum seekers the country took in last year.

Turkey's religious body removes controversial fatwa from website after public reaction
[TODAYSZAMAN] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's Religious Affairs Directorate has removed a statement it gave in response to a question on a father's "lustful" feelings for his daughter after the answer sparked wide reaction.

The answer, which stands as a fatwa or a religious decree, was widely shared on the social media before its link was removed from the directorate's website. According to screen shots taken by social media users, while answering a question on whether a man's having "lustful" feelings for his daughter would religiously invalidate his marriage with the girl's mother, the High Council on Religious Affairs -- the directorate's body which deals with fatwas-- showed some Islamic sources to explain the issue.

The answer said Islamic scholars have differing opinions on the issue, quoting some scholars who say the marriage would be null and void. It then explains the circumstances for such a situation to happen, which includes the girl's being above nine and the contact's being too close to arouse lustful feelings in the father.

The fatwa drew strong reactions on the social media, prompting Religious Affairs Directorate to issue a statement and to remove the answer from the website. The directorate said "the opinions in the text which lack wisdom and morals cannot be attributed to the High Council on Religious Affairs and the directorate."

The statement said the reports on the answer aim to discredit the directorate, noting that the question was purposefully asked by some and claimed that those who asked the question "distorted" the answer with "tricks, wiliness and wordplay". It added that "comments made by some media outlets on the issue are perverse and twisted," vowing to take legal actions against media outlets publishing the story.

China hospital demolished 'with people inside'
[BBC] A hospital in China has been bulldozed while still in use, reportedly causing doctors inside to flee and burying six bodies from its morgue under rubble, state media say.

The Number Four Hospital of Zhengzhou University in Henan province was partially demolished on Thursday amid a land dispute, Xinhua news agency said.

Hospital staff told news hounds equipment worth over $600,000 was damaged.

The case has sparked outrage in China, where forced demolitions are common.

Doctors told local media that several men in camouflage uniforms showed up at the hospital, in Huiji district, on Thursday, and began bulldozing the building.

Liu Chunguang, director of the hospital's radiology department, told Xinhua news agency he was examining a patient when the demolition took place.

"A gaping hole appeared - the patient was half-scared to death, and ran out."

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, a single surviver held tightly to the smashed prow...
hospital official Yuan Fang told Xinhua that radiology equipment had been damaged and the hospital had had to suspend its activities, forcing many patients to switch hospitals.

"Burying the bodies of patients in rubble is extremely disrespectful to the dear departed," he added.

The local Huiji district government said in a statement that the hospital's CT room and morgue were on land designated for a road expansion project, and that it had asked the hospital to dismantle the rooms themselves several times.

The hospital was evacuated prior to demolition, and there were no casualties, the statement added.

However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
hospital officials said three doctors and a patient were in the building at the time of demolition, and that some hospital workers were maimed when they tried to stop the demolition, Jinghua news reported.

Kurdish-Arab alliance repels ISIS attack near Hasakah
[ARA] HASAKAH – Units of the Kurdish-Arab alliance of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) repelled an offensive by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) on a town in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah, military sources reported on Friday.

ISIS militant fighters launched a fierce attack on the town of Khamayel in Hasakah countryside, using mortar shells and rockets in a bid to hit SDF positions there.

“Our units responded to the terror attack by shelling ISIS positions in the vicinity of Mount Abdulaziz,” a spokesman for the SDF told ARA News.

“Our artillery shelling caused the death of at least 13 ISIS terrorists, while the rest eventually retreated towards their headquarters in Shaddadi city south of Hasakah.”

Two SDF fighters were killed and five others wounded in Friday’s clashes, the source said.

In the meantime, warplanes of the U.S.-led coalition conducted several airstrikes on ISIS headquarters in Shaddadi, destroying a jihadi training camp and three armored vehicles.

The western-backed SDF units have been preparing a military campaign against ISIS militants in Shaddadi –the final bastion for the radical group in Hasakah province.

“Soon we will launch the battle for Shaddadi to liberate the city and its residents from the fist of ISIS terrorists,” the SDF spokesman said.

Turkish police detain pro-Kurdish opposition members in Istanbul raid
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Turkish police detained senior local officials from the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on Friday in a raid on one of its Istanbul offices, party officials said, days after President Tayyip Erdogan said he backed legal action against its members.

Riot police and special forces took part in the operation, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency, which said the action was part of a crackdown on urban networks of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Death Eater group's youth wing.

Erdogan and the government accuse the HDP, parliament's third-biggest party, of being an extension of the PKK, which has fought a three-decade insurgency for greater Kurdish autonomy in the southeast and which is considered a terrorist group by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

The HDP says it is opposed to violence and wants a peaceful solution for Turkey's Kurds.

The detentions come less than 48 hours after Erdogan said some HDP politicians and local mayors were behaving like members of a terrorist organization and that their positions should not shield them from prosecution.

Party officials said no reason was given for the detentions.

The predominantly Kurdish southeast has sunk into its worst violence since the 1990s after a two-year ceasefire between the PKK and the state collapsed last July.

Turkish police arrest killers of Syrian Journalist Naji al-Jerf
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Turkish police, in statement issued Thursday, said it had arrested two men who involved in the assassination of Syrian journalist Naji al-Jerf ten days ago in Gaziantep, the Turkish border town with Syria.

The statement which did not disclose the criminals' nationality or identity said it found weapons and explosives devices in their residence in Gaziantep.

Al-Jerf was gunned down on December 27, 2015, by a masked gunman shot him twice using a pistol fitted with a silencer before fleeing in an unlicensed vehicle, eyewitnesses said.

The film maker and journalist lived in Gaziantep with his wife and two young daughters after fleeing their war-torn homeland.

No one has yet claimed responsibility but suspicion has fallen on ISIS, according to the Independent.

develop its first nuclear power plant.

According to the Anadolu Agency the deal, signed on April 13 last year, would have envisaged 1,000 nuclear engineers being trained in both countries, six months in Ankara and a year in Moscow.

However due to the fallout in relations between the two countries due to the shooting down of a Russian jet by Turkey near the Syrian border in November Russia has cancelled the plan.

As part of the $20 billion deal Russia's National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI) was to initiate training programs in four Turkish universities to give the Turks the know-how to run Akkuyu, Turkey's first nuclear power plant which is being built in the country's southern province of Mersin.
So who will run the plant, if Turkey cannot? Or will it sit empty, an expensive monument to President Erdogan's hubris, like that unfinished pyramid hotel in downtown Pyongyang?

[REUTERS] Syrian rebels said they were under international pressure to make concessions that would prolong the war, adding to their doubts about a U.N.-led drive for peace talks due to begin this month.

Friday's statement by prominent rebel groups that support the idea of a political solution follows a meeting this week between a new opposition council and U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura, who aims to start negotiations on Jan. 25 in Geneva.

Opposition leaders told de Mistura the government must take goodwill steps before any negotiations, by halting bombardments of civilian areas, lifting blockades of rebel-held territory and releasing detainees. They are waiting to hear back from him.

The opposition council, set up to steer negotiations on the opposition side, was facing "international and U.N. pressure ... to offer concessions that will prolong the suffering of our people and the spilling of their blood", the rebels said.

ISIS launches counteroffensive in Aleppo
[ARA] ALEPPO – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked on Friday positions of the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

ISIS militants bombed the SDF headquarters in several towns, including Yusuf Pasha, Qashlah, Sadaniya, Haj Husen, Hamad and Agha.

The group has used heavy weapons and mortar fire in the attacks, that caused mass destruction in the SDF-held towns.

“Subsequent to the attack, fierce clashes broke out between our (SDF) forces and Daesh terrorists in northern Aleppo,” SDF member Habun Osman told ARA News, using another acronym for ISIS.

“The terror group brought large military reinforcements from Manbij city on the border with Turkey after we cut off their main supply line between Raqqa and Aleppo,” he said.

The spokesman added that the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes backed the SDF by bombing ISIS positions in northern Aleppo.

“More than twenty Daesh terrorists were killed, before the rest were forced to withdraw towards their major bastion of Manbij.”

The SDF units, which include Kurdish, Arab and Christian fighters, have earlier recaptured the Tishreen Dam on the Euphrates River, cutting off the main ISIS supply line between Raqqa and Aleppo. The extremist group is striving to regain the dam, because of its strategic location that links its territories on the border with Turkey to its de facto capital of Raqqa.

Marjah Cleared Of Insurgents, But Helmand Difficult To Control
[Tolo News] Officials said Friday they are making steady progress in clearing Marjah district in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
of Death Eaters but because of its sheer size it is difficult to control.

Helmand province is one of the biggest in the country and is strategically key for the Taliban who have tried to take control of it in the past few months.

Security forces have however battled to clear it as criminal groups, narcos and the Taliban have made a point of trying to hold on to this opium-rich region.

But Helmand police said they have eliminated hundreds of Death Eaters in the province, particularly in Marjah.

Helmand 215 Maiwand Military Corps commander Moen Faqir has also confirmed that in addition to the Taliban, criminal groups and narcos are trying to keep Helmand insecure in order to secure a source of income through drugs for themselves.

But Faqir promised to bring changes to the situation.

"We have defeated the enemy and they do not have the ability to confront us," said Faqir.

Meanwhile Helmand Police Chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang said that the Taliban has been defeated in most part of the Marjah district and operations by Afghan forces have incurred heavy casualties on the Death Eater group.

"Marjah district is completely under Afghan forces control and all the routes to Marjah are open and we have created 10 security check posts," said Helmand Police Chief Abdul Rahman Sarjang.

But not everyone agrees. A local police commander said that after Afghan troops carried out a ground clearance operation and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
forces assisted with air strikes, the Taliban simply resumed activities in the district.

Over 30 suspected militants killed in North Waziristan air strikes
[DAWN] More than 30 suspected holy warriors were killed in military air strikes in the North Wazoo tribal area on Friday, security sources said.

The strikes were carried out in the Datta Khel tehsil of North Waziristan, destroying several Lion of Islam hideouts, sources added.

The conflict zone is off-limits to journalists, making it difficult to independently verify the number and identity of those killed.

Daraa: regime troops launch attack to capture al-Manshiya neighborhood
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian rebels thwarted Thursday an incursion attempt by Syria regime forces into al-Manshiya neighborhood in the southern Daraa city, Revolution Local Committees said.

Rebels were able to push army troops back despite the surprise ground and aerial attack that started early Thursday along with heavy artillery on al-Manshiya.

In the northern frontline of Sheikh Miskeen town, rebels launched 'Ahl al-Nakhwa' battle on Wednesday, pressing slow advances.

Bashir al-Assad's forces backed by fighters from Leb's Hezbollah movement have launched major offensive two weeks ago, seeking to control Sheikh Miskeen and powerful air base, Brigade 82.

Rebel groups, including Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, had been in control of Sheikh Miskeen and Brigade 82 since last year.

front man Abu Muhammad al-Adnani has reportedly been maimed in an air strike in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a military statement said on Thursday.

Rooters could not immediately confirm the report.

"There are confirmed reports that the so-called terrorist Abu Muhammad al-Adnani the front man of the Daesh [Islamic State] (Islamic State) snuffies was maimed in an air strike ... in the region of Barwana," the statement said.

It said Adnani had lost "a large amount of blood" in the attack a few days ago, before being moved to the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul

, Islamic State's capital in Iraq.

More than 100 Islamic State fighters were killed in and around Barwana this week by air strikes aimed at helping the Iraqi army repel Lion of Islam offensives near the city of Haditha, according to the U.S.-led coalition.

Adnani is a Syrian from Idlib who pledged allegiance to Islamic State's predecessor al Qaeda more than a decade ago and was once imprisoned by U.S. forces in Iraq, according to the Brookings Institution.

U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, front man for the coalition, could not confirm the Iraqi military report but said Adnani had not been targeted by a coalition air strike.

Sexual assaults row leads to dismissal of police chief in Germany
[DAWN] Cologne's police chief was dismissed on Friday amid mounting criticism of his force's handling of a string of New Year's Eve sexual assaults and robberies.

Wolfgang Abers had faced mounting criticism for the police's handling of the alleged New Year's Eve attacks on women by groups of men who were part of a larger crowd of some 1,000 described as being of "Arab or North African origin."

Police initially failed to mention the attacks around Cologne's main station in their report the following morning, describing the New Year festivities as "largely peaceful".

Albers acknowledged the mistake earlier this week, but dismissed widespread criticism that officers were overwhelmed and reacted too slowly in protecting the women.

"When the situation became tense in front of the train station - there were a thousand men who were completely out of control - the police cleared the square," he had told public broadcaster ARD. "It was a difficult operation and the police did an exemplary job."

Witnesses, however, told a different story. German media quoted dozens of women who said they were followed by groups of men who groped them, tried to pull off their clothes and stole valuables.

Also read: Major report reveals 'extensive' abuse of women in EU

An internal police report also widely published in German media on Thursday indicated strongly that police were overwhelmed and described how women had to run through mobs of drunken men outside Cologne's main train station.

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday said it was sending 60-year-old Wolfgang Albers into early retirement.

The state's interior minister, Ralf Jaeger, said the move was "necessary to restore public trust and the Cologne police's ability to act, with a view to upcoming major events."

It is pertinent to mention that Cologne's annual carnival is next month, and the government is on its toes to ensure such a situation may not arise again.

The Islamist group, the latest of a series that the authorities say they have found plotting attacks inside and outside the country, had been active in the town of Dar Bouazza, near Casablanca, they said.

The group had been in contact with ISIS in Iraq and Syria and had tried to send fighters there for training so that they could return to carry out attacks on Moroccan soil, the interior ministry said in a statement.

"Investigations showed that the leader of the group had solid contacts with commanders of ISIS on the ground in Iraq and Syria," the statement said.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Hippie Is Planning a Peace Concert in ISIS-Controlled Syria
The world's latest Darwin Award candidate
[DailyBeast] James Twyman, ‘Peace Troubadour,’ is embarking on ‘the most important and dangerous peace mission’ of his life—to the Israel-Syria border and beyond, wielding his classical guitar.
No, not El Kabong, but I suspect this may involve a bong...
ISIS generally doesn’t respond well to music.

But that isn’t stopping James Twyman, an author and musician based in Portland, Oregon, from planning a trip to ISIS-held territory in Syria later this month to help bring peace to the region through the power of a musical-prayer concert.
Peace, power. Anyone seeing what's wrong with this picture?
“Performing the peace prayers in ISIS Controlled Syria will be the most important and dangerous peace mission of my life,” the self-described “Peace Troubadour” blogged last month.
And the last mission, I suspect...
“Every peace mission I’ve been on has been dangerous, but this journey is without question the most perilous, and in my opinion—the most important,” Twyman wrote. “People everywhere are concerned about the escalating violence in the Middle East, especially with the rise of ISIS, but they don’t feel empowered to be part of the solution. That is what we are about to change.”
About two generations too late with regard to noticing Middle East violence, aren't you? About the same in what to do about it, as well, doncha think?
Twyman, slinging his Cordoba classical guitar, is scheduled to fly out Jan. 20. He’ll first spend a weekend in Italy getting ready for the show, then will hop a flight to Tel Aviv to meet a handful of supporters and organizers. From there they’ll travel to the Israel-Syria border and set up their musical-prayer homebase in Majdal Shams, an Israeli-occupied Druze town in Syrian territory. (Twyman traveled to the same town in 2013 for a previous peace vigil for Syria.)
All under the careful protection of Israeli forces. They should send him a bill when he is done...
“The people there are very anti-ISIS and anti-terrorism—it’s where we’ll set up our base of operations,” he told The Daily Beast.

Twyman is aware of the kidnappings, the high-profile beheadings, the whole war, the State Department Syria travel warning, and all that jazz. He says that, despite his website’s bold phrasing, he is taking all necessary precautions for his potential ISIS-land gig.
More goofiness at the link.

province of Pakistain, it has been reported.

According to the local media reports in Pakistain, the senior Taliban leader, Mawlawi Mohammad Alam was rubbed out by gunnies close to Quetta, the quiet provincial capital of Balochistan.

The incident took place on Thursday evening in Kuchlak area located around 25 kilometres from the quiet provincial capital.

Mawlawi Alam was a big shot of the Taliban group and was a loyal commander to the newly-appointed Taliban supreme leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

Sources within the Taliban group have confirmed the incident and have said the an investigation has been launched to find out the main motive and those involved behind the liquidation.

The Taliban group in Afghanistan has not formally confirmed the liquidation of Mawlawi Alam so far.

Mawlawi Alam has reportedly led numerous fights in favor of Mullah Mansoor following soaring tensions among the Taliban leaders with the announcement of Taliban group founder Mullah Mohammad Omar's death and announcement of his successor.

Police Probing Paris Attacks Find Suicide Vests in Brussels Flat
[AnNahar] Belgian police have found three belts for possible use in suicide kabooms, traces of explosives and a fingerprint of wanted Gay Paree attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam at a Brussels flat, prosecutors said Friday.

Prosecutors said Abdeslam might have hidden in the flat after the November 13 attacks, but that they were also working on the theory that the bombs used in the massacre could have been made there.

The discovery was made in December during a search of an apartment in the Schaerbeek area of the Belgian capital. It was rented by someone using a false name, possibly used by another suspect now in jug, they said.

"In the framework of the investigation opened after the Gay Paree attacks the federal prosecutor confirms that during a house search conducted December 10th in an apartment on the third floor, Rue Bergé in Schaerbeek, material that can be used to fabricate explosives as well as traces of TATP were found," the prosecutor said.

"This apartment was rented under a false identity that might have been used by a person already in jug in this case," the statement added.

"Three handmade belts that might be used to transport explosives as well as a fingerprint of Salah Abdeslam were also discovered."

Police have been hunting for Belgian-born Abdeslam, 26, since jacket wallahs and assailants firing automatic weapons killed 130 people and maimed many more in a wave of attacks across Gay Paree.

Investigators said friends drove Abdeslam from Gay Paree back to the Belgian capital, slipping through three police checks, while one suspect has since said that he drove Abdeslam across Brussels to Schaerbeek on November 14.

Federal prosecutors front man Eric Van Der Sypt said however that it was not clear when Abdeslam visited the Brussels apartment.

"We found the fingerprint but we have no idea when it was left -- a fingerprint has no date or time on it," Van Der Sypt told AFP.

"Maybe he went there to get his belt (before the attacks), and maybe he went back afterwards. I suppose it's a possibility of both," he added.

He would not comment on Belgian media reports that the flat had been cleaned and checked for fingerprints after the attacks, which would explain why only one of Abdeslam's prints was found.

After the attacks, French authorities said that telephone data had placed Abdeslam in the area where an explosives belt was found in a dustbin in the Gay Paree suburb of Montrouge.

group grabbed credit for the coordinated series of attacks on bars, restaurants, and a concert hall, in which the attackers were armed with guns and suicide belts. Seven died during the assault but the total number of those directly involved is still unclear.

One of them was Abdeslam's brother, Brahim.

In early December, Belgian prosecutors said they were looking for two "armed and dangerous" men who used false ID papers to help Abdeslam travel to Hungary in September where he was stopped -- but then let go -- by police.

Belgian authorities have tossed in the slammer
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
and charged a total of 10 people in connection with the attacks, including several with helping Abdeslam.

La Belle France has long said the attacks were prepared and organised in Belgium and that the criminal mastermind was Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Brussels resident who was killed in a police raid in Gay Paree days after the massacre.

QUETTA: Target killing to security forces continued in Balochistan as two police personnel were shot dead on Friday outside a mosque in Quetta’s Multani Muhala, officials said.

According to initial reports, police officials died on the spot when unknown armed men fired at them. Another policeman was seriously injured during the firing. The bodies of Head Constable Mushtaq and constable Wajid were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta for a post-mortem. The assailants managed to flee the scene of crime.

Egypt hotel attack: One attacker killed, other wounded
(CNN)Two men with knives attacked at least three guests and threatened others at a hotel in the Egyptian coastal city of Hurghada, the country's Ministry of Interior said Friday.

Security forces stationed at the hotel confronted the men as they tried to escape, killing one and seriously wounding the other, according to the ministry's Facebook page.

Previous reporting indicated the men may have had guns, but the Interior Ministry said each man had a knife and a "sound gun," which does not shoot bullets, according to the ministry.

Two Austrian tourists and a Swedish tourist were stabbed as the attackers were fleeing. The maimed were sent to a hospital and one was was treated and released.

There were no details on the conditions of the others.

The attack took place at the Bella Vista Hotel in the city's busy downtown area, state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
al-Ahram reported.

Hurghada is a resort town along Egypt's Red Sea coast, located about 280 miles (451 kilometers) from Cairo.
This is the second hotel attack on the second day in a row. Yesterday 15-20 miscreants shot up and threw flares and molotov cocktails at a tour bus from Israel carrying what Al Ahram politely referrred to as "1948 Arabs", those who stayed rather than fled to become Palestinians. Nobody was hurt, and the Egyptian authorities played down the incident. This morning Ansar Bayt al Maqdis/ISIS in the Sinai claimed to have inspired that attack on what they fondly believed to have been "the Jews".
Ynet adds:
The assailants arrived by sea to carry out the assault, the sources said.
While according to Al Ahram:
Both men were able to enter the hotel through a restaurant facing the street, according to the police statement.
Fog of reporting, I guess.

#1  Al Ahram has an update today, as follows (it's not important enough to post tomorrow as an independent article):

It is still unclear what motivated the two attackers to stab three European tourists inside the Bella Vista hotel on the Red Sea; authorities have ruled out terror as a reason

A stabbing at a hotel in Egypt's Hurghada on Friday which injured three tourists “didn't take more than four minutes,” Bella Vista hotel's administration said on Saturday, playing down the incident and blaming media outlets for reporting otherwise.
"Two drugged young men attacked one of our hotel restaurants,” read the statement, posted on the hotel's Facebook page.

The attackers carried a "fake gun" and "knives," and one attacker "used his knife trying to stab some of our guests,” the statement added, repeating the same story released by the interior ministry on Friday following the attack.

"Our security and the hotel police man [sic] dealt immediately within seconds with the 2 attackers and shot them down."

One of the guests had left hospital two hours after the attack and the other two were still recovering, Bella Vista said.

The hotel's Saturday account came amid conflicting media and official reports about the details of the incident, with some media outlets reporting the assailants carried firearms and used them at the hotel. It was also reported that one of them wore an explosive belt.

"Any other rumors or news more than the above is nonsense and crap," the hotel statement added. "Most probably is to make propaganda that will affect the tourism in Egypt badly [sic], and that was the main aim."

Car explodes in Sabratha
[Libya Herald] A car exploded early this morning in Sabratha, 80 kilometres west of Tripoli. It happened before dawn near a shopping area in the town’s Muhanad area. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether this was a car bomb or a simple accident.

Some reports claim the former, stating that a bomb was being transported to an unknown destination but exploded en route killing the driver but no one else. No one was injured in the incident, either.

However, Sabratha Media Centre, run by the municipality, says that the blast was caused by a gas cylinder exploding in a car that was parked outside the owner’s house and that no one was killed or injured.

Various militant groups, including the so-called Islamic State (IS) and Ansar Al-Sharia, are widely reported to have training camps in the area, and militants who have been arrested elsewhere have claimed that Sabratha is a major staging post for IS between Tunisia and Sirte. This week, there were reports of a boat arriving at Sabratha from Tunisia with some IS supporters, picking up a number more and then heading to Sirte.

The local authorities, however, persistently deny the presence of any militants in the town. But nearly three weeks ago, terrorists bombed the town’s military intelligence headquarters, injuring two security guards.

yesterday claimed that their members had killed the elderly homoeopathy doctor in Jhenaidah, Chhamir Uddin Mandal, on Thursday.

The US-based SITE Intelligence Group that monitors bad boy activity said the jihadist group had asserted that it killed the man because he converted from Islam, Rooters said.

"Soldiers of the caliphate were able to eliminate the apostate, named 'Samir al-Din', by stabbing him with a knife," SITE quoted the group as saying.

Religious extremism has surged in recent months in Muslim-majority Bangladesh with the IS claiming responsibility for the killings of foreigners, attacks on mosques and Christian priests over the last few months. On the other hand, newly-formed group al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent earlier claimed responsibilities for the murder of several secularists.

But the government has rejected Islamic State's claims of involvement, blaming political opponents and banned Lion of Islam group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
for the attacks.

Son of Surat Ali Mandal from Kaluhati village, Chhamir, 85, was converted to Christianity in 1993, but again switched back to Islam around four years back, locals said. Chhamir used to say prayers at the local mosque.

Sadar police OC Hassan Hafizur Rahman said Chhamir had been practising homoeopathy for the last 40 years at Belekhal Bazar. He could not ascertain why the doctor had been killed.

When contacted, Chhamir's family members said they were in the dark about the motive behind the murder.

Locals who went to the chamber around 3pm found him sitting on his chair. They first thought that he might have suffered a stroke, but later saw that he was stabbed two to three times on his chest.

The OC said that the killers might have chosen the time as there was a bull-cart race under way at the nearby ground.

Chhamir's son Monirul Islam filed a case on Thursday night against some unnamed persons.

Kuwaiti Detainee Repatriated from Guantanamo Bay
[AnNahar] A Guantanamo Bay inmate has been transferred from the U.S. military prison back to his home country of Kuwait, the Pentagon announced Friday, bringing the prison's remaining population down to 104.

"The Department of Defense announced today the repatriation of Faez Mohammed Ahmed al-Kandari from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the government of the state of Kuwait," the Pentagon said in a statement.

The U.S. military and intelligence agencies had "determined continued law of war detention of al-Kandari does not remain necessary," and that al-Kandari was no longer considered a significant threat to U.S. security.

According to his leaked prison file, published by the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
, 40-year-old Al-Kandari was a "committed member" of al-Qaeda and was an influential religious figure for the group's fighters in Afghanistan.

He was initially captured in December 2001, and sent to Guantanamo in May the following year.

President Barack Obama
The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn’t. But she is a typical white person...
pledged to shut Guantanamo when he took office in 2009, but his efforts have been repeatedly thwarted by Congress.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter last month approved the transfer of 17 low-risk detainees from Guantanamo, and two of these were released Wednesday.

In all, 45 inmates have been approved for transfer and the Pentagon is trying to find countries to take them. Many are from Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and cannot go back there given the country's collapse into civil war.

Generally, an inmate is subject to monitoring and rehabilitation once he arrives in a host country.

Since 2002, a total of 779 detainees have been held at Guantanamo in connection with America's "war on terror."

Inmates are kept without recourse to regular U.S. legal processes and some likely will die in prison without ever being convicted of a crime.

#2  He was met by a welcoming committee, according to An Nahar today:

The last Kuwaiti prisoner in the U.S. Guantanamo Bay prison returned home Saturday to a family reception after 14 years of detention, the head of a detainee group said.

Faez Mohammed Ahmed Al-Kandari became the last of 12 Kuwaitis held for long terms in the prison as the United States prepares to close the facility.

"He looked tired but his morale was very high. He was welcomed at the airport by his father, two brothers and uncle," Khalid al-Oudah, head of the society of families of Kuwaiti prisoners in Guantanamo, who was also present, told Agence France Presse.

Kandari was immediately taken to a military hospital for medical examination where dozens of relatives led by his mother were allowed to greet and talk to him freely, Oudah said.

The former prisoner was brought back to the Gulf state aboard a private jet which flew from Guantanamo to the emirate via Casablanca, Morocco.

Oudah said Kandari will remain in hospital for some time and only his close family members will be allowed to visit him.

He will then be taken to a rehabilitation centre for more than six months after which prosecutors will interrogate him and decide whether to pursue legal action, Oudah said.

Oudah thanked the efforts of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and other authorities in securing the return of Kandari.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Left-wing Israeli says he helps kill Palestinians who sell land to Jews
[IsraelTimes] Netanyahu says TV documentary 'unmasked murderous non-Moslems among us, whose hatred for settlements has pushed them over the edge'

A prominent Israeli campaigner for Paleostinian rights was recorded saying that he helps Paleostinian authorities find and kill Paleostinians who sell land to Jews.

The recording was aired Thursday by the television program Uvda of Israel's Channel 2. In it, Ezra Nawi, a Jewish far-left activist from the Ta'ayush group, is heard speaking about four Paleostinian real estate sellers, whom Nawi said mistook him for a Jew interested in buying their property.

"Straight away I give their pictures and phone numbers to the Preventive Security Force," Nawi is heard saying in reference to the Paleostinian Authority's counterintelligence arm. "The Paleostinian Authority catches them and kills them. But before it kills them, they get beat up a lot."

In the Paleostinian Authority, the penal code reserves capital punishment for anyone convicted of selling land to Jews. This law, which Paleostinian officials defended as designed to prevent takeovers by settlers, has not been implemented in Paleostinian courts, where sellers of land to Jews are usually sentenced to several years in prison. However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
in recent years several Paleostinian have been murdered for selling land. Their murders have remained unsolved.

Nawi was also documented obtaining information from a Paleostinian who believed Nawi was a Jew interested in purchasing land. Nawi is seen saying he intends to give that information to Paleostinian security officials as well. According to Uvda, an activist with the human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
group B'Tselem helped Nawi set up the would-be seller in a sting operation in which the seller would be tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
The recordings and footage were collected by right-wing activists who secretly recorded Nawi.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Facebook Friday that the report "unmasked murderous Moslems among us, whose hatred for settlements has pushed them over the edge to the point of delivering innocents for torture and execution. Those who encourage murder cannot continue to hide behind the hypocritical pretense of caring for human rights."

Man killed in sectarian attack in Karachi
KARACHI: A man was shot dead in what was described as a sectarian attack on the main Dr Saleem-uz-Zaman Siddiqi Road popularly known as Suparco Road near the Dow Medical University Hospital on Friday evening.

community’s residential complex Gulshan-i-Noor near Suparco and fled.

He sustained critical wounds and was taken to the Dow hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Later, his body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

According to Dr Seemin Jamali, the man sustained bullet wounds on his head.

Mobina Town SHO Zafar Abbasi said that the murder appeared to be a targeted killing linked with sectarianism.

The victim was returning home in Chapal Sun City near Safoora Goth after shopping for his daughter somewhere in the city. Quoting the watchman of the Gulshan-i-Noor housing complex, the police officer said that three suspects riding on a motorcycle were chasing Mr Zaidi.

The victim was the father of associate news producer of Geo News Tasbiha Zaidi, said a Geo News official.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen said that it was a targeted killing of a member of the Shia community.

He said the victim was an office-bearer of Electronic Dealers Association in Saddar.

Europe
Paris Fake Suicide Vest Attacker Identified by Family
[AnNahar] The man rubbed out by police after trying to storm a Gay Paree cop shoppe brandishing a meat cleaver appears to have been identified by his family, a source close to the investigation said Friday.

The man, who attacked the cop shoppe on Thursday wearing a fake boom jacket, was said to be a Tunisian named Tarek Belgacem.

He was killed by officers as he ran towards the entrance of the cop shoppe shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest"), exactly a year to the day since the massacre of journalists at the Charlie Hebdo

newspaper.

Based on his fingerprints, police initially identified him as Sallah Ali, born in 1995 in Casablanca, a homeless man who was incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for theft in 2013.

But Gay Paree prosecutor Francois Molins said Friday that the identity he gave was "not at all certain" since he was carrying no documents at the time of his arrest.

"This identity (he gave in 2013) is contradicted by a hand-written note that we found in his clothes," Molins told La Belle France Inter radio. "He is not known to the intelligence services under this name."

Investigation sources told AFP that individuals claiming to be the parents and cousin of Belgacem have identified him from his photo.

"There is therefore a very strong indication that it is him, but it is still to early to speak of a formal identification," the source said.

Molins said the man was carrying a mobile phone with a German SIM card, with French media saying it contained several messages in Arabic, some of which were sent from Germany.

His note was written in Arabic with a hand-drawn flag of the Islamic State

group (IS).

The cop shoppe is in the 18th district of Gay Paree, an area with a mainly North African population close to the tourist hotspot of Montmartre.

Bangladesh
Dhaka-Islamabad farce
[DAWN] RELATIONS between Pakistain and Bangladesh seem to be on a downhill course with both countries expelling each other's diplomats. The senior Bangladeshi diplomat, expelled by Islamabad recently, had to be a woman, because last month Pakistain recalled Farina Arshad, the political secretary at its high commission in Dhaka after Bangladesh accused her of having bully boy links. Although there is much speculation in the media, we are still in the dark about why the Bangladeshi diplomat was asked to leave the country. While Islamabad can legitimately claim to have simply reacted to the provocation by Dhaka, both governments need to sober up and ask each other -- and themselves -- in what way their tit-for-tat expulsions will promote mutual ties, or lead to a more stable South Asia.

That Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
Wajed came to power through an election that was deemed controversial by many is indeed Bangladesh's internal matter. What is cause for concern, however, is her obsession with the past in a manner that neither advances her country's image abroad nor promotes internal peace and reconciliation. The execution of a number of Bangladeshi nationals after trials that fell far short of international judicial standards has also strained ties with Pakistain and added to, instead of lessening, the acute polarisation in Bangladeshi politics and society. In contrast, the people of the two countries have shown a more positive attitude, in fact friendlier sentiments, towards each other, as is often evident in Pakistain-Bangladesh cricket matches. With Islamabad and New Delhi making determined efforts to not allow acts of terror, such as the one at Pathankot, to derail the grinding of the peace processor, it is time the leaderships in Dhaka and Islamabad also made fresh efforts to halt the downhill slide. There is every reason for us to plead with Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
and Ms Wajed to end what is a thoroughly unnecessary diplomatic crisis. The next Saarc summit in Islamabad provides an excellent opportunity for the two to meet on the sidelines and sort things out.

-Land of the Free
Do you know the gun owners in your circle?
From Fred's AO
[BaltimoreSun] It's inevitable when my husband and I visit family these days that the subject of violence in Baltimore comes up. Often, I'm the one who raises it. But when it came up last week on a trip to see my parents in Georgia, I got my back up. I thought of the 11-hour drive south and the billboards we passed along I-81 boasting guns for sale ("A Glock for Christmas"!), and of the story my brother-in-law, who lives in Florida, told of a neighbor stopping by to shoot the breeze in his suburban driveway, a handgun holstered at the man's waist as their kids played nearby.
Gotta love Freedom...
I'm less afraid of the criminals wielding guns in Baltimore, I declared as we discussed the issue, than I am by those permitted gun owners. I know how to stay out of the line of Baltimore's illegal gunfire; I have the luxury of being white and middle class in a largely segregated city that reserves most of its shootings for poor, black neighborhoods overtaken by "the game." The closest I typically get to the action is feeling the chest-thumping vibrations of the Foxtrot police helicopter flying overhead in pursuit of someone who might be a few streets over, but might as well be a world away. But I don't know where the legal gun owners are or how to ensure that their children, no matter how well versed in respecting firearms, won't one day introduce that weapon to my daughter.
Yeah, cop helos overfly you just for the purpose of chest thumping, all because you have the "luxury" of being white. You need to get out more, and by that I don't mean the the Whole Food cooperative in your neighborhood. I suggest you introduce your daughter to firearms so that she will not be afraid and will learn about their use and safety. Who am I kidding? She wants to protect her daughter by taking guns away from people who are no threat to her.
And so, as President Barack Obama announced plans this week to tighten background checks for gun buyers and increase gun tracking and research, I thought, that's all well and good, but how about adding something immediately useful: a gun owner registry available to the public online — something like those for sex offenders. I'm not equating gun owners with predatory perverts,
Yes, you are.
but the model is helpful here; I want a searchable database I can consult to find out whether my kid can have a play date at your house.
Draconian gun laws in Baltimore will ensure your precious' play date will not be ruined by the presence of firearms.
Avoid all such problems (what if one of the parents of that other child smokes(?!) or has snacks containing gluten(?!?!)) by always having the play dates at your house. Granted, that greatly ups the mess factor, you'll have to double the amount of snack foods you have on hand, and you will actually have to stay home to watch over them, but that way other children's stupid other-thinking parents will never cause your little darling a moment of worry.
Before the 33 percent of U.S. households containing a gun (half of which don't secure them) gets too worked up, they should know that it would likely include many of my relatives and their friends. My parents grew up in small town Minnesota, and hunting was a regular part of their lives before they left for other states, and it still is for many they know. My folks were taught how to handle guns and use them safely. But that doesn't do much to allay my fears; it's the simple presence of the weapon in the home and the possibilities it presents that terrify me.
The 2nd Amendment was written so that we might all enjoy tasty venison, and not against the actions of a growing and increasingly hostile government. All that directing governments to make you "feel safe" will accomplish will be to place you on the front lines of any action to counter government attempts at registration and confiscation. My suggestion: either buy a gun, or learn to duck.
U.S. toddlers were accidentally shooting people — including themselves — at the rate of one per week last year. More than 21,000 Americans committed suicide with a firearm in 2014 (nearly twice the number of gun homicides), while 586 people were accidentally killed with guns (10 percent of them age 15 and younger). And most of the guns used in the last 15 unpredictable mass shootings — including San Bernardino;
jihadis
Umpqua, Ore.;
suicidally depressed
and Marysville, Wash., where a 15-year-old used his father's Beretta to kill four fellow high school students
girl problems
— were purchased legally. The mother of the Umpqua shooter, who killed nine people at a local community college, had even bragged online a decade ago about her son's "knowledge in this field" of firearms. So much for safety training.
"Safety training" is a two step process. Just providing the data isn't enough. The individual has to accept and follow the rules of safety. That they don't is no one's fault but the shooter's.
My only exposure to guns has been to legal ones. I remember as a teen-ager spending an afternoon with a couple of boys who were showing off after school, firing a family gun in the backyard and play aiming at one another. And I fired a .22 caliber pistol several years ago as a reporter covering handgun-carry regulations in Maryland; I still have the paper target practice sheet taped to my cubicle to flaunt my bullseye. There was a definite rush to handling the weapon, and I could see the attraction of target practice as a hobby. But the risk to owning the gun isn't worth it to me.
Re-evaluate, then. Guns aren't going away, but you could be if you fail to buy and learn to use a gun.
Guns in the home are far more likely to be used accidentally, in suicides or family disputes than in self defense, according to studies based on anecdotal evidence. (Perhaps Mr. Obama's improved research will show for sure.) And I'm pretty certain that if I'd had a gun the one time I was the victim of a violent crime (in upstate New York), the outcome would have been a lot worse than it was, with the firearm turned against me in short order. Instead, I was able to scream and break away from a mugger with a dull knife trying to force me into a vacant lot between rowhouses.
A 9mm or .45 Caliber "rape whistle" would help, I suspect.
Three years ago, a New York newspaper published a map online showing who owned guns in two counties outside of New York City. The backlash was swift and wide, with the most legitimate complaints being a fear of theft, which the paper said never materialized, and concerns about identifying where law enforcement lived. (I'm willing to compromise by including the officer's name, but not address, in my database.)
Golly. That's big of her.
Much of the response, though, was made up of comments like this one: "so, should we start wearing yellow Stars of David so the general public can be aware of we are??"

Gun owners may feel picked on, but they are not a persecuted class. They are individuals who have chosen to keep in their homes an object whose chief purpose is to injure or kill, whether in self defense or otherwise. The rest of us should have a right to know it's there before we — or our children — enter.
Gun owners because they are in such a minority are a persecuted class with the political class and the government nearly constantly demanding registration and confiscation. An open database of gun owners doesn't help the cause of freedom, but does help the control of governments over firearms.

Nothing more than a regurgitation of talking points. Is Tricia actually a live human being?

Undoubtedly, Tricia believes in the wonderful concept of diversity. How she's able to square this with not allowing her kids to play with the children of gun owners requires suspension of reality.

One more thing, Trish - at what age will you stop trying to control your daughter from trying to see what firearms are all about? Fifteen? Eighteen? Thirty-six?

How about, instead of registering gun owners, we register non-gun owners. Sort of a list of all gun-free zones. Tricia could put her name up there so people wouldn't be afraid of her.

If the name you want to search is not on the list than you can assume that they have a gun and act accordingly. That work for you, Trish?

-Land of the Free
This Week in Guns, January 9th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

The standoff in Oregon will be going into its sixth day on Saturday. The latest is from Thursday when Harney County Sheriff David Wade met with Ammon Bundy and offered safe passage from the wildlife refuge in exchange for simply leaving. The offer was rejected.

The occupation has split Patriot groups into opposing camps.

Let's face it, folks. This has not been anyone's finest hour. From Hollywood celebrities demanding a bloodbath, to Patriots even on Rantburg suggesting direct machine gun fire to resolve the standoff, to others waiting to see what happens.

My thinking is that the people who now occupy the wildlife refuge have done more to bring attention to the out-of-control federal judiciary in Oregon than any other actions I have seen or read about since the Bundy Ranch standoff two years ago

Did you know about the Hammond family 2 weeks ago? I hadn't, but now the occupiers have got the attention of leftist and mainstream media nationwide. How it will play out or benefit the cause of freedom, I have zero idea, but it is better than just holding a march in Burns, Oregon, then leaving the area.

It is being reported in the American newspaper of record, the UK Daily Mail, that the occupation is being conducted by a intergalactic rogues gallery of ne'er do wells, malingerers, liars and drinkers. Little doubt exists that they could have done better, but to my mind that is not the issue. Even if one of the purported leaders of the occupation really is a federal confidential informant, I seriously doubt his handlers would want him to set up another standoff the government will lose.

That said, there is a problem. At the moment the occupiers have plenty of supplies, but not enough warm bodies. The problem is you can't get competent people with military experience to help out operating under the auspices of individuals who have have falsely claimed military experience. Oathkeepers dealt themselves out of this action from the very beginning, but I doubt even second thoughts will result in more shooters with military experience appearing in Oregon. If new bodies do show up, they will likely be untrained shooters with no military experience. And word is, elsewhere in the West several militia groups ordered their members to stand down.

It's a shame, but entirely understandable.

I have yet to hear any of demands from the folks occupying the wildlife refuge in Oregon, so whatever their plan is they are keeping it to themselves.

There is donations information, but from what I have read, they are doing fine in that department.

Loads.

Philadelphia police officer ambushed 'in the name of Islam'
More on this story from yesterday.
[BBC] A police officer in Philadelphia was ambushed by a man who pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS), officials have said.

Edward Archer fired at least 11 shots at the officer, in an act done "in the name of Islam", police said.

Despite being shot, Officer Jessie Hartnett left his vehicle and was able to return fire, striking Mr Archer at least once.

Mr Archer escaped on foot but was apprehended by police shortly after.

Officer Hartnett is expected to recover from his injuries

"He has confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam," the police commissioner said, because he believes "police defend laws that are contrary to Islam".

There is no evidence that Mr Archer, 30, of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was working with anyone else, he said.

Philadelphia court records show he was convicted of assault in March and was set to begin a prison term. He had also been convicted of forging documents in a nearby suburb.

Mr Archer's mother Valerie Holliday said he is mentally ill and had suffered multiple head injuries, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

"He's been acting kind of strange lately. He's been talking to himself . . . laughing and mumbling," she told the newspaper. "He's been hearing voices in his head. We asked him to get medical help."
Because once they're adult, they can't be forcibly medicated unless they're in jail.
Ms Holliday also told the Inquirer that he had been a devout Muslim "for a long time".

Two suspects confess in Imran Farooq murder case
[DAWN] Two men suspected of being involved in the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
's self-exiled leader Dr Imran Farooq recorded their confessional statements before the Islamabad deputy commissioner on Thursday, sources said.

The FIA had enjugged
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
three suspects -- Khalid Shamim, Mohsin Ali Syed and Moazzam Ali -- for their alleged role in Dr Farooq's murder.

While Shamim and Mohsin Ali confessed to their involvement, Moazzam Ali, said to be the prime suspect, was unwilling to come up with a confession, sources in the prosecution told Dawn.

In his statement recorded under Section 164 of the criminal procedure code, Mohsin said that Moazzam had handled the travel documents to live in the United Kingdom.

According to private news channel Geo News, Mohsin in his statement gave graphic details of the murder.

He said that at a university hostel in London he and his accomplice Kashif Khan Kamran, whose whereabouts are not known and may have died, prepared a plot to kill Dr Farooq.

He said they monitored the movement of Dr Farooq in London to know about his routine.

On the day of the murder, he said, he grabbed Dr Farooq while Kashif stabbed him and then bludgeoned him with a brick to ensure his death.

Shamim said that he had consented to join the murder plot because he was a diehard MQM activist, sources said.

Shamim claimed that senior MQM leader Muhammad Anwar gave the order to assassinate Dr Farooq.

The JIT constituted to investigate the murder had suggested that MQM chief the increasingly enormousAltaf Hussain
..The head of MQM in Pakistain, who has lived in London and hasn't laid eyes on Pakistain since Caesar made corporal. Judging from the size of him,he may be a Hutt...
regarded Dr Farooq as a threat and wanted him eliminated.

The JIT report also noted that all three suspects were members of the All Pakistain Muttahida Students Organisation, the MQM's student wing.

The suspects were sent to Adiyala jail on 14-day judicial remand by an Islamabad anti-terrorism court.

The gruesome murder took place on Sept 16, 2010, near Dr Farooq's London home.

The London police had named Mohsin Ali Syed and Mohammad Kashif Khan Kamran as desperados in connection with the murder as they were in the UK when Dr Farooq was murdered. They arrested the three men during the last five years but released them later without filing any charges.

However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
it was widely reported that both Mohsin and Kamran had been taken into custody by Pak intelligence agents the moment they landed at Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport in 2010.

The third suspect, Khalid Shamim, was allegedly taken into custody in January 2011 and a petition regarding his 'illegal detention and going missing' was filed by his wife in the Sindh High Court.

Afghanistan
ISIS loyalists behead 6 Taliban militants, 1 soldier in Nangarhar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The loyalists of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. province of Afghanistan.

A local official speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed to Ashna TV/Voice of America that the ISIS loyalists have beheaded 6 Taliban bandidos Death Eaters and one Afghan soldier in Achin district.

The official further added that the beheadings took place shortly after the Friday prayers in Pekha area which is under the control of the ISIS loyalists.

He said the local residents were also forced to gather in the area to watch the beheadings.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie sadly admitted that he was a better peeping Tom than he was a comedian...
a local resident said the ISIS loyalists beheaded 4 people and came under Arclight airstrike before beheading the fifth victim.

Provincial governor front man Ataullah Khogyani confirmed that the ISIS loyalists were targeted in an Arclight airstrike in Achin district and at least four senior commanders of the terror group were killed.

The Taliban group has not commented regarding the report so far.

Nangarhar is among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where gunnies belonging the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group and Taliban bandidos Death Eaters are actively operating in a number of its districts.

Madrassa teacher held for al-Qaeda links
[Daily Excelsior] A madrassa teacher from Bangalore has been tossed in the calaboose
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
by Delhi Police for suspected links with al-Qaeda, making it the fourth arrest in its ongoing operation against the terror outfit.

Maulana Anzar Shah was arrested in Bangalore by a team of Delhi Police's Special Cell on Wednesday following which he was brought to Delhi on transit remand and produced before a court yesterday which sent him to police custody till January 20, said a police official.

In December, Delhi Police had arrested three suspected operatives of al-Qaeda module in the India sub-continent (AQIS).

While Mohammed Asif (41), the first one to be arrested, is believed to be one of the founding members and the Indian head (amir) of AQIS's motivation, recruitment and training wing, was held from Seelampur in northeast Delhi, another operative Abdul Rahman (37) was arrested from Jagatpur area of Cuttack in Odisha.

The third arrest, Zafar Masood, allegedly acted as a financier for the module. He was arrested from mohalla Deepa Sarai in UP's Sambhal district. They were all booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Shah, the latest arrest in connection with the module, had met Mohammed Asif at a religious congregation in Bangalore, following which he was introduced to Abdul Rahman and Zafar Masood.

He was asked to act as a provider of logistics support whenever the need arised, said an official privy to the investigation.

The Special Cell has evidence of communication between Shah, Abdul Rehman and Zafar Masood, too, mostly carried out through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. The Sherlocks have also traced a money trail connecting Shah and Masood, the official said.

A few more persons are presently under the police scanner and more arrests are likely, the official added.

AQIS was floated by al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahari himself in September 2014 following a meeting somewhere in Afghanistan-Pakistain region which reportedly had in its quorum the entire Grand Council (Arabian Shura) of al-Qaeda, including al-Zawahiri

Despite several Indians being present at the training camp, Maulana Asim Umar

His video appearances are frequently accompanied by clips of al Qaeda's senior propagandist in Pakistan, Ahmad Farooq. Umar the author of The Army of Anti-Christ: Blackwater, Documentation of the Dreadful Terrorist Activities of America's Blackwater in Islamic Countries...
alias Sanaul Haq and Mohammed Asif are believed to be the only Indians present in the council, police said.

After Umar was anointed the chief, it is believed that some unexpected visitors met him, including Indian Mujahideen
A locally recruited auxilliary of Pakistain's Lashkar-e-Taiba, designed to give a domestic patina to Pakistain's terror war against its bigger neighbor...
chief Riyaz Bhatkal, who is still on the lam, and other senior IM commanders like Baba Sajid, who was recently reported to have been killed in Syria, police said.

Asif was Umar's chosen candidate and, with the help of his deputy Qasim, Umar had contacted Asif through a social networking site, a year before he left for Tehran on a 'ziyarat' visa, exclusively meant for visiting a holy shrine in Tehran.

Umar, Asif and Qasim are all natives of Sambhal in UP, police added.

At least 21 people killed in air strikes on Eastern Ghouta towns
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Syrian regime warplanes on Thursday have staged air strikes on Eastern Ghouta towns near Damascus, killing at least 21 people, including children, and wounding about 140, local activists told Zaman al-Wasl.

Local activists said 12 people have been killed in the stricken town of Erbin while 6 more people have been killed in nearby Zamalka, in less than 24 hours since 10 people bit the dust in the aerial bombing on Zamalka.

Three more people were killed in Douma city, activists added.

On Wednesday, Syrian regime and rebel bombardment killed at least 24 civilians and maimed dozens in the capital and the embattled Eastern Ghouta, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and activists said.

Mortar rounds fired from the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region onto residential areas of Damascus left nine civilians dead and 25 maimed, local monitoring group tracks rebels shelling on Damascus said.

The attack came after the regime fired 6 cluster rockets onto Douma earlier in the day, killing five civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and media center.

Eastern Ghouta, which is largely controlled by the Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
(Army of Islam) rebel group, is regularly bombarded by government forces.

Ten other civilians, including a child, were later killed in government Arclight airstrikes on the nearby towns of Hazzeh and Zamalka, activists said.
