Obama's chance to emulate Carter - Iranians grab 10 US Navy sailors and 2 small boats

Iran detains 10 US sailors after vessels stopped in the Gulf

Iran has detained 10 US sailors after their vessels were stopped in the Gulf, a US official told the BBC.

"We lost contact with two small US naval craft en route from Kuwait to Bahrain," the official said.

He said that the Iranians informed the US that the sailors were safe and "will promptly be allowed to continue their journey".

The incident happened near Farsi Island after one of the ships encountered mechanical problems.

After the incident, US Secretary of State John Kerry immediately called Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to begin negotiations.

An unnamed official told the Associated Press that Mr Kerry "personally engaged with Zarif on this issue to try to get to this outcome".

Mr Kerry and Mr Zarif developed a personal relationship throughout three years of negotiating a nuclear deal.

Iran's semi-official news agency FARS reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard detained the nine men and one woman, and that they had been "trespassing" in Iranian waters.

It is not clear when the sailors will be released.

In December, Iran's navy conducted rocket tests near US warships and other commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The tests were "highly provocative", a US military commander said at the time.

Napoleon be pumped. An Army Marches on its Lactation
[Defense Watch] Today, my former boss, a retired Army Intelligence officer sent me a copy of a memorandum for record concerning the US Army's most recent lactation and breastfeeding policies, signed by the new Secretary of the Army, Eric K. Fanning and dated November 10, 2015.

My first reaction was to pop a couple Tums even before starting to read it. As I scanned the document, I realized how far the Army has fallen on its sword. The sword of feminism, the sword of lunacy has completely eviscerated the lean green machine, so that it is the US Army in name only now.

The magnificent fighting force that was born at Lexington and Concord in 1775; the spectacular fighting force that stormed the gates of Chapultepec, that found itself divided and fought each other at Gettysburg, only to be reborn as brothers again on San Juan Hill; the phenomenal US Army that threw back the Hun in 1918, and saved the world in 1945; the incredibly brave force that fought in Korea, and never lost a major battle in Vietnam; the professionals who restored a nation's pride in 1991 and who gave all that mortality can give from 2001 until now is dying.

The US Army is fading out like an elephant on its last breaths, a mastodon being consumed by hordes of politically correct and feminist ants, who seek to devour it from the inside out and outside in.
Appears the feeders pictured in the article are wearing USAF trousers, not that it matters much.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
U.S. Navy Reveals Details About Lasers on Next-Gen Ships
A new U.S. Navy large surface combatant might feature futuristic weapons that, until now, have been the province of science fiction.

According to a recent interview with a top naval official, the Navy envisions that its next-generation large surface combatant--or destroyer-cruise-size--ships might be armed with host of lasers, railguns and even particle beam weapons, in addition to regular missile tubes. The new design is intended as a replacement for both the Flight III Arleigh Burke-class and the Ticonderoga-class ships.

"It's the number of cells, the number of weapons. Not just hard-kill systems but also directed-energy weapons, whatever is coming down the road. Whether that's lasers, particle beams, rail guns, whatever comes down the road 15 to 20 years from now is really what we're going to have to satisfy," Rear Adm. Peter Fanta, the Navy's director of surface warfare told Defense News in an interview.
Twenty years? We'll barely have the bugs worked out by then!
"That means a power system that can handle it. It will have to be a hard kill, soft kill, directed-energy plus kinetic weapons blend. Enough power so when the power density gets there I can have directed energy for defensive purposes as well as the offensive long-range punch we'll probably get off kinetics," Fanta said. He went on to note that jamming and electromagnetic warfare would require energy sources as well.

The future warship will be a multi-mission vessel--potentially with versions of the same hull replacing both the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and the Ticonderoga-class cruisers. It will be a "family solution" rather than a "single solution." While the ship may or may not be built in one variant, the large surface combatant will have to replace the Ticonderoga-class cruisers in their carrier escort role.

"I need an air defense commander ship with a radar capable of handling threats with enough missile capacity--and what those missiles are will be developed over the next 10-15 years, it doesn't have to be the current ones--to allow me to defend the sea base, whether that's with a carrier or an expeditionary strike group or group of oilers or whatever," Fanta told Defense News. He added that the vessel will need to "defend the sea base and conduct counter-ballistic missile, anti-shoot cruise missile and provide an offensive strike for that carrier or by itself. But everything in that sentence is completely within the capability of a slightly larger DDG 51, or destroyer-cruiser-size hull."

Unlike in the past, the Navy is expected to develop the new ship as a multi-mission box that is able to be upgraded, making it easily adapted for new missions and technologies. "I'm not designing something that looks like a ship. I'm designing something that looks like a box in the water and I'm adding capability," Fanta said. "Frankly whatever the naval and architects tell me that that hull shape should look like is what I'm willing to go with."

The new vessels will be open architecture designs using evolutionary rather than revolutionary design concepts. "Open architecture to me means we own the data rights and we can hire somebody to go build a new system using those data rights," Fanta told Defense News.

"Modularity to me means not necessarily plug-and-play modules but being able to upgrade when technology allows me to upgrade at a reasonable rate. I can describe my next set of weapons, sensors, engineering components, hull designs that all allow me to go build that next ship. That's more what I'm going for than a particular hull design. I'm looking for a family of ships that can do more than one thing, because every time we build a single-mission ship it tends to get decommissioned before its life expectancy."

Fanta also recognizes that Russian and Chinese ship-to-ship missiles dangerously range the Navy's fleet. As such, the service will need to invest in a new family of missiles--including a new high-speed long-range weapon. "I want a family of surface-to-surface missiles. I want them on everything I can bolt them onto," Fanta told Defense News. "I want a missile that goes over 100 miles--I'll use round numbers so I don't get cross-threaded with the security guys--a missile that goes over 200 miles, a missile that goes over 400 miles, a missile that goes over 700 miles. That's my ultimate goal. They can be dual-purpose missiles, can attack surface targets and land targets."

Fanta notes that these are just of the Navy's initial concepts for the new ships--it'll be at least fifteen year before construction starts on the first vessel. There are also many challenges that need to be solved to accommodate the energy weapons envisioned for the new ships. Simply providing enough power to operate the weapons is the most serious challenge, as Fanta notes. To see these plans realzied, the Navy will have to figure out the optimal energy source for these power-hungry systems.

While gas turbines can provide a lot of energy--as the DDG-1000 program demonstrates--it might not be enough. The Navy might have no choice but to resort to nuclear power when the ships start being built in the 2030s. But only time will tell.

#1  "every time we build a single-mission ship it tends to get decommissioned before its life expectancy."

To be more accurate, it's more a "primary-mission ship with secondary mission capabilities." And the reason they get decommissioned is more political than strategic.

Notice that nowhere in this is any mention of anti-submarine warfare, or the potential threat from the PLAN. ASW is tedious, stressful and time-consuming. Apparently the surface warfare community is leaving it to the bubble-heads.

#4  Still think a laser is more sizzle than steak. I work with lasers and they are temperamental beasts. There are advantages to not needing projectiles but I think that would pale when it comes to self-lazing, dirty optics, and a million other issues that might take the system down when they most need it.

Hopefully they have something super-robust that I haven't thought of.

Clinton tax plan would place 4% surcharge on incomes over $5 million
Because the government needs more of our money to mismanage.
Hillary Clinton called Monday for a 4 percent "fair share surcharge" on Americans making more than $5 million annually, the first of several proposals she plans to unveil this week aimed at ensuring the wealthy pay a higher effective tax rate than the middle class.
So that later she can jack down taxes on the lower class, further divorcing them from economic realities when they vote.
"Right now we're behind and we have to get the wealthy and the corporations to pay their fair share," the Democratic presidential front-runner said at a campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa.
Corporations should neither pay taxes nor get involved in politics.
The measure would raise $150 billion in revenues over a decade, which would pay for some of her proposals aimed at creating jobs and rebuilding infrastructure, said a campaign official who asked not to be named. Clinton will introduce additional tax ideas aimed at the wealthy later this week, the official said.
I thought the gas tax was for rebuilding infrastructure during lean years.
Clinton previewed her proposals earlier this month, vowing she would "go beyond" billionaire Warren Buffett's plan to set the minimum effective tax rate for those earning $1 million per year at 30 percent.
Lunacy stacked on top of more lunacy. Great.
"As president, I'll do what it takes to make sure the super-wealthy are truly paying their fair share," Clinton said Jan. 2. The proposal from Buffett, who has endorsed her, is "one idea that would help achieve greater fairness in our tax system."
Flat tax. Done. So is the IRS.

What to Expect From President Obama's Final State of the Union Address
When he gives his final State of the Union speech Tuesday, President Obama will be addressing members of Congress. But they won't be his target audience.
They never really were. Except for the useful tools among them.
In fact, he probably wouldn't care if they didn't show up at all.
Fewer people to cough and applaud and get in the way of him hearing himself speak.
Experts predict that rather than trying to cajole a Republican-controlled Congress to cooperate with him in 2016, the president will be asking viewers around the country to remember his legacy items and consider the future in an attempt to set the tone for the next (he hopes, Democratic) president.
Ah. Educating those who fawn over him on what the narrative for framing his "accomplishments" should be. Good for denial.
"It's not going to be a laundry list of things on the agenda" like most State of the Union addresses, said Norm Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.
I wonder why.
That's how the president himself framed it in a video message sent to supporters Wednesday.
Funny how the smartest guy in the room always figures out a better way of doing things than even the founding fathers could have thought of.
"What I want to focus on in this State of the Union address [is] not just the remarkable progress we've made, not just what I want to get done in the year ahead, but what we all need to do together in the years to come," he said.
You've had eight years to fix things. They're not. We stolen from our future prosperity just to keep us going today, and we've just started another recession. That is not an accomplishment. And unless you talk about paying down the debt and securing this country to be the leader of the free world again, your words will only be appreciated by those who have no hope of understanding how badly you have hurt the nation.
But why not take advantage of a captive Congressional audience to make a final, grand gesture on big-ticket items like gun control and immigration reform?
Since it's working so well so far.
For one, Obama began the year demonstrating that he's basically given up on Congress' ability to deliver on such issues. When he announced a slate of new executive actions on gun safety and mental health, he suggested they were simply initial steps toward meaningful reform.
I prefer to think of these executive actions as the first order of business for the next president to unsign.
"It won't happen during this Congress. It won't happen during my presidency," Obama said of comprehensive gun control legislation in a speech Tuesday. "But a lot of things don't happen overnight. A woman's right to vote didn't happen overnight. The liberation of African Americans didn't happen overnight."
So if gun control ever makes its way through Congress, we can all thank you. Got it.
That's all the more reason why Obama's State of the Union is more of a breakup note with Congress than anything else: showing members that he's already over them and is looking toward the impact his solo work will have on the country's future.
Solo is the key word here. Does this mean he will continue his "leading from his behind" policy?
"There's no point in wasting time trying to convince this Congress to embrace really any aspects of his agenda," said congressional scholar Thomas Mann.
Everyone's crazy except for the enlightened one.
The president is also likely to take advantage of his captive national prime-time audience to highlight what he considers his biggest accomplishments of the past seven years.
That should be the shortest part of his speech. If you remove whatever he drops in here that he defines to be an "accomplishment" that really isn't. Like trying to kill coal-fired power plants before their time.
"I would think there's a very good chance he'll talk about what shape the economy was in when he got elected and inaugurated and what's happened since and where we have to go," Ornstein said.
One last "Bush's fault".
He might even talk about what else he could have achieved if Republicans in Congress did not have a knee-jerk reaction against his agenda -- a point which he could link to the presidential race.
What "knee jerk"? You mean the reaction that's been going on since you were first elected through lies and voter fraud?
"He'll pretty much ignore Congress in terms of appealing for support, but use the Republican majorities as a way to link them with the Republican candidates for the White House and talk about just how extremely conservative the party has become," Mann said.
If the Trunks moved to the right, it's what was required to keep you in check. You're simply looking in the mirror, 0bean.
That's not to say the president is giving up entirely on passing bills in 2016: there could certainly be movement on less sweeping issues like criminal justice reform, mental health legislation and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
Given your penchant to keep criminals out of jail, to misread the health system, and to enter into harmful agreements, I think not.
But ironically, even as the White House faces a year of small-ball legislation ahead, officials are framing it as a conscious decision to focus on the bigger picture, well after Obama leaves office, as White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough did in an email to supporters accompanying the president's video message.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the meeting that decided how to frame the SOTU speech. Was his lack of accomplishments and leadership addressed directly at any point, or was it the elephant in the room they had to talk around?
"What we have left to do is bigger than any one policy initiative or new bill in Congress. This is about who we are, where we're headed, and what kind of country we want to be," he said.
I'd be happy to just be a country again.

US Court: Wearing Unearned Military Medals Is Free Speech
[ABSee] A federal appeals court on Monday tossed out a veteran's conviction for wearing military medals he didn't earn, saying it was a form of free speech protected by the Constitution.

A specially convened 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the First Amendment allows people to wear unearned military honors.

Elven Joe Swisher of Idaho was convicted in 2007 of violating the Stolen Valor Act, which made it a misdemeanor to falsely claim military accomplishments. President George W. Bush signed it into law in 2006, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck it down in 2012 as a violation of free speech protections.

Investigators looked into Swisher's military claims after he testified at the 2005 trial of a man charged with soliciting the murder of a federal judge. Swisher wore a Purple Heart on the witness stand.

The Polish-Hungarian talks
h/t Gates of Vienna
Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met for six hours with Polish political patriarch Jaroslaw Kaczynski at Niedzica Castle in southern Poland. With virtually no details available on the meeting, journalists were quick to speculate, some suggesting that the two political outsiders were hatching a conspiracy.

...Speaking to Der Spiegel, Merkel 'right hand' CDU politician Volker Kauder suggested that Brussels must "find the courage to apply sanctions" against a defiant Poland if "European values are violated."

"It is this type of thing," Stremidlovsky writes, "that Orban unequivocally steps out against. The Hungarian prime minister has publically said that Budapest will never allow the EU to punish Poland. And this is not just a gesture, but a manifestation of the political course taken by Budapest."

Germany Threatens Sanctions Against Poland
h/t Gates of Vienna

Last year, Poland's conservative nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS), led by former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, captured both the presidency and parliament at elections in May and November. Since taking office, the party's lawmakers have used their parliamentary majority to initiate a series of controversial legal reforms, causing concerns both at home and abroad, specifically in Brussels and in Berlin.

Carville's wife: When the Beest Loses Iowa and NH, Biden or Warren Will Jump In
[Breitbart] Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show," Republican political consultant Mary Matalin said Hillary Clinton's support comes from the support for her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Thus if she loses the first primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, Matalin predicted it was very likely someone like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)15% or Vice President Joe Biden will jump in the race.

Matalin said, "Losing Iowa and New Hampshire is going to be the pivotal moment to see the prowess of her campaign and the depth of her support among Democratic regulars."

She continued, "She doesn't have a depth of following Her following is derivative of her husband. She doesn't have that big loyal faction in the Democratic Party. She may have some loyal followers -- some feminist and such but she is just there because she is the the wife of."

"I'm saying when she loses those two states it makes others--however the rules are--rules are made to be broken--jump in the race. Whether it's an Elizabeth Warren or a Joe Biden or Jim Webb is going to run an independent candidacy."

Host Malzberg asked, "You don't think they will coalesces behind Sanders? You think they will say uh-oh and a Biden or a Warren or a Kerry will get in?"

One of the more interesting aspects of the European cover-up of mass sex assaults by so-called refugees is that it abets abuse inflicted on Muslim women as well. Before the story of the Cologne attacks broke, Katin Bennhold of the New York Times wrote a piece on the abuse of refugee women on the migrant trail. The story should have set alarm bells ringing in the West about what was coming up the trail towards them but it didn't.

Empty Suit to host Empty Chair at State of the Union
[Wapo] President Obama is hoping absence will speak louder than words on Tuesday.

For his last State of the Union address, he'll be leaving one seat empty in Michelle Obama's guest box "for the victims of gun violence who no longer have a voice," according to the White House.

It will be at least the second time a State of the Union seat has been left purposefully empty, reports The Post's Juliet Eilperin. One empty seat in Laura Bush's box in 2003 symbolized "the empty place many Americans will always have at their tables and in their lives because of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001."

Empty chairs are hardly original in politics, though they're not always used in such a formal situation to illustrate such a somber point.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Bicyclist, 29, stabbed to death during robbery in Baltimore
[Baltimore Sun] Robert Ponsi, 29, a server at a restaurant in Harbor East, was stabbed to death on his bicycle during a robbery in Waverly Saturday night, police said.

Officers were called at 9:10 p.m. and found Ponsi stabbed multiple times at Venable Avenue and Old York Road. He was pronounced dead just before 4 a.m. at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Police have arrested two suspects in the attack: Antwan Eldridge, 17, of Ednor Gardens, and Daquan Middleton, 16, of Berea. Both are charged as adults with murder, armed robbery and assault, police said.

Homicide detectives are looking to identify other suspects. Anyone with information may call 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Ponsi moved to Baltimore five years ago from Leesburg, Fla., where he was raised by his grandparents, his grandfather, Robert Ponsi, 72, said.

Known as "Robbie" to his family, he was the second-eldest of six children, and an athletic, strong-willed young man who had hoped to join the AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps, his grandfather said.

#3  A man takes his son, just able to walk, to the top of the hill overlooking a valley of rocks and of cedars and says, "do you see those soldier and settlers down there beyond the fence?" "Yes papa" the son replies. The father then tells his son each day, "your mission in life is to the kill them and chase the survivors from this land."

If this walk up the hill is repeated daily until the son is full grown, what then can we expect of the outcomes ?

If the government and educational institutions reinforce the father's efforts by instilling victimization and entitlement, what then can we expect of the outcomes.

If some sort of false racial 'privilege' becomes a narrative for stoking the flames of fear and hatred.....well, I need not go on.

Arabia
Guantanamo Bay Detainee Repatriated to Saudi Arabia
[AnNahar] A Guantanamo Bay inmate has been repatriated to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the Pentagon announced Monday, bringing the remote military prison's remaining population down to 103.

Muhammed Abd Al Rahman Awn Al-Shamrani had spent 14 years in Guantanamo, where he was held without trial and was suspected of being an al-Qaeda member who "possibly" worked as the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now among the dear departed, though not among the dearest...
's bodyguard, according to his leaked prisoner file.

Al-Shimrani, 40, will participate in Saudi Arabia's reintegration and rehabilitation program, which includes support from family members.

"The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility," the Pentagon said in a statement.

Pentagon front man Commander Gary Ross said al-Shamrani had arrived in Saudi Arabia earlier Monday.

Of the 103 remaining inmates, 44 have been approved for transfer, and the Pentagon is trying to find countries to take them.

Many are from Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and cannot go back, given its collapse into civil war.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in December signed off on 17 of the 44 to be transferred as soon as this month, and three were released last week: two to Ghana and one to Kuwait.

Officials say a further flurry of releases is expected in the coming weeks.

Even if all 44 are released, the remaining inmates are expected to stay in indefinite detention.

Al-Shimrani had on previous occasions been deemed a potential ongoing threat to the United States.

"If released without rehabilitation, close supervision, and means to successfully reintegrate into his society as a law-abiding citizen, it is assessed detainee would immediately seek out prior associates and reengage in hostilities and krazed killer support activities at home and abroad," his October 2008 prisoner file states.

In July last year, his lawyer Martha Rayner told a military hearing that al-Shimrani's family had pledged to give him broad support.

"They will provide him with a home, support in establishing employment and beginning a family of his own," she wrote.

Georgia arrests suspected radioactive materials smugglers
[IsraelTimes] Three men nabbed for trying to sell cesium-137, a byproduct of nuclear reactors that could make a 'dirty bomb'

Georgia's security agency said Monday it had incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
three men suspected of peddling radioactive cesium, the latest in a series of operations against nuclear smugglers in the ex-Soviet nation.

The agency said Monday that the men were arrested in the capital, Tbilisi, while trying to sell an unspecified amount of cesium-137 for $100,000. It didn't say when the arrest was made or give any other details.

Cesium-137, a byproduct of nuclear reactors, is used for various medical and industrial purposes.

Georgia and some other ex-Soviet nations have seen numerous attempts at contraband trade in radioactive substances. There have been fears that if such materials fall in the hands of myrmidons, they could be used in a "dirty bomb," a device intended to contaminate large areas using conventional explosives.

Georgia has relied on assistance from the US to combat nuclear smuggling. Georgian law enforcement agencies have arrested dozens of suspected traders in radioactive substances over the past several years.

in connection with attack on Israeli Arabs outside Egyptian hotel near pyramids

Egypt has arrested a senior member of the banned Moslem Brüderbund group on suspicion of involvement in an attack on Israeli Arab tourists on Thursday at a hotel close to the Giza pyramids.

No one was hurt in the attack, during which more than a dozen individuals opened fire on the tourists with fireworks and birdshot, causing some damage to the hotel's facade and tour buses parked nearby.

Egyptian media reported Monday that security services had arrested Abed Al A'al Al Asiri, along with two of his sons and seven other suspects.

The tourists, who numbered roughly 40, were Israeli Arabs, mainly from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm.

According to initial reports, the shooters were part of a mob of 15 individuals that gathered outside the Three Pyramids Hotel. They were identified by Egyptian media as linked to the Moslem Brüderbund group. Early reports said they shot fireworks and rubber bullets at the hotel as the Israelis were unpacking their suitcases from the buses.

The shooters aimed at the tourists as they walked from the entrance of the hotel to the parked buses nearby.

The KRG also instructed three ministries, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Culture and Youth, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, to avoid having IS websites and radios entering in Kurdistan. The stations are likely based in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, a city seen as the IS headquarters in Iraq.

The Minister of Transportation and Communication added, "we have cut all networks that IS could benefit from in the area, which are not far from Kurdistan, especially Erbil and Duhok cities."

The action is seen as an effort to limit influence in the Kurdistan Region, as IS has used social media and traditional media to spread propaganda.

12 children dead after Russia strike hits Syria school
[Al Ahram] At least 12 children and three adults were killed in a Russian air strike that hit a school in Syria's Aleppo province on Monday, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the three adults included a teacher, and that the strike in the town of Anjara also injured at least 20 people, all of them children and teachers.

The monitor said there had been heavy air strikes and festivities between government and rebel forces since Sunday in the northern province, which is controlled by a mixture of moderate and Salafist tough guys.

Photos distributed by media activists in Aleppo province showed a classroom full of rubble with the wooden tops of desks blown off their metal frames.

The Britannia-based Observatory also reported that three children were killed by rebel rocket fire on a government-held district in Aleppo city.

Control of the city has been divided between government forces in the west and rebel fighters in the east since shortly after fighting began there in mid-2012.

Iran: Oil Prices Harm all Producers
[ALMANAR.LB] Iran's Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh said current oil prices harm all producers and certain countries' insistence on overproduction is politically motivated.

"None of the oil producers is happy with the existing prices which will harm suppliers in the long term," he said on the sidelines of Iran's opening of two gas operations in its biggest oil field.

"Historically, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) would intervene to strike a balance between supply and demand when there were excess oil in the market," Zangeneh said.

According to the Iranian minister, "there is a political will behind OPEC indecision over production ceiling in the organization."

OPEC has been producing nearly a million more barrels of oil each day than its 30 million bpd ceiling for the past 16 months.

The organization approved a Saudi plan to scrap allocating fixed production quotas to member countries in its Dec. 2011 meeting and introduced output ceiling of 30 million barrels per day (bpd) which does not specify quotas.

Zangeneh has described the decision a "historic mistake", saying "making up for this big mistake and reviving the quota system in OPEC is a very hard task."

Because of overproduction chiefly by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and non-OPEC producers, there is currently up to 2.5 million bpd of excess oil in the market which has caused crude prices to lose around 60% of their value since mid-2014.

Iran has asked OPEC to reduce production and respect the ceiling as it plans to reclaim its position as the group's second largest producer.

for allegedly joining ISIS, Rooters' Aswat Masriya reported.

In statements to Aswat Masriya, Rady stated that the 12 Egyptians were arrested in Adana province while attempting to join ISIS and that the Egyptian consulate was following the case.

He also added that there would be a demand made to Turkey to deport those arrested back to Egypt.

The Egyptian consulate will also appoint lawyers to follow the investigations, Rady said.

On Sunday, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported that Turkish police had arrested a group of 15 Egyptians and Russians, in addition to 7 Turkish men, for joining ISIS in Adna and Elazig provinces.

Foreign ISIS recruits often cross Turkish borders to join the murderous Moslem group in Syria and Iraq.

Turkey Plans To Introduce Work Permits For Syrian Refugees, Minister Says
[NRTTV] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
plans to offer Syrian refugees work permits in order to encourage fewer of them to migrate, Volkan Bozkir, Turkey's minister for European Affairs, said on Monday (Jan. 11), amid European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) pressure to reduce the flow of migrants.

Bozkir was speaking after meeting European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, who last week said the European Union was far from satisfied with Turkey's efforts to prevent migrants from crossing the Aegean Sea to Greece.

"We have started to provide visas to Syrians coming from third party countries on January 8. We are trying to reduce the pressure for illegal migration by giving Syrians in Turkey work permits," Bozkir told news hounds after the meeting Timmermans in Ankara.

"The number of people immigrating illegally exceeded 150,000 in 2015, and Turkish authorities stopped 500 migrants daily," he added.

Turkey is the world's biggest host of refugees amid the greatest global movement of refugees ever recorded.

More than 2.2 million Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey from the civil war, now in its sixth year. Another 200,000 Iraqi refugees also shelter there, and migrants from Iran, Afghanistan and Africa all use Turkey as a transit point to Europe.

Turkey, which aspires to join the EU, struck a deal with the EU in November to prevent migrants from traveling to Europe in return for 3 billion euro ($3.3 billion) in cash, a deal on visas and renewed talks on joining the 28-nation bloc.

The Turkish government has been weighing plans to make it easier for Syrians to earn a living, but it has been hampered by a domestic unemployment rate of about 10 percent as economic growth slows.

Masked men attack Saudi intelligence compound with firebombs
[Al Ahram] Masked men threw Molotov cocktails at an intelligence service compound in the city of Qatif in eastern Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, activists said on Monday, in an apparent reprisal for the execution of a prominent Shia Muslim holy man earlier this month.

A Saudi Interior Ministry front man said "there was a failed terrorist attempt to burn the building with Molotov cocktails" and that one of the assailants was captured.

Video footage posted on social media and dated Jan. 9 showed several masked young men moving under cover of darkness and lobbing Molotov cocktails over the protective outer wall of a building compound. Most of the Molotov cocktails were seen exploding on the ground inside, setting a nearby tree on fire.

The authenticity of the footage could not immediately be confirmed.

It was not initially clear who was behind the attack. But the recording contained a footnote indicating that it was carried out by Shia youth seeking to avenge the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a vocal critic of the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy.

Arabia
Soddys detain 49 terror suspects
[Saudi Gazette] Forty-nine suspects on terror charges were caught during the past 10 days in a preemptive crackdown in various parts of Saudi Arabia, security sources said.

The sources said the suspects surrendered without any resistance. They consisted of 36 Saudis, six Syrians, four Yemenis, a Sudanese and a Filipino.

Last September Saudi’s Interior Ministry announced that it intercepted a terror cell during four simultaneous operations in Riyadh and Dammam. The ministry confirmed that the cell was linked to the suicide bomber behind the Abha mosque attack that took place last August.

During the Riyadh operation, Saudi forces arrested Faysal Hamed al-Ghamdi, a wanted man who had threatened to kill his father.

Another suspect Aqeel Ameesh al-Mutairy was killed during heavy clashes during the last September raid.

Official figures put the number of terror suspects arrested in Saudi Arabia in the last seven years at 4,777.

ISIS executes 85 kops in Ninevah
[ARA News] ERBIL – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) executed on Monday 85 police officers in the Iraqi northwestern provence of Nineveh, local media sources reported.

The radical group had arrested dozens of Iraqi police forces across Nineveh last week, accusing them of working for the U.S.-backed government in Baghdad against the ISIS self-declared Caliphate.

Speaking to ARA News in Mosul, media activist Abdullah al-Malla said that ISIS militants executed a large number of the arrested Iraqi police officers in the vicinity of Mosul in Nineveh province on Monday.

“85 police officers loyal to the Iraqi central government were executed by firing squad in the Ghazlani Camp in Al-Raas sub-district,” al-Malla reported.

“The officers were executed while wearing their police uniform, after being accused by the Sharia Court of treason and cooperation with Crusader forces against the Caliphate,” the source said.

The ISIS-led Sharia Court issued a statement accusing the Iraqi police forces of ‘fighting the Caliphate’ on behalf of the ‘Crusaders’ –in reference to the U.S.-led coalition.

The radical court ordered their immediate execution, threatening that any member of the Iraqi forces or the Kurdish Peshmerga captured by ISIS would face the same fate.

Kurds reinforce Kirkuk
[ARA News] DUHOK – Kurdish army of the Peshmerga started fortifying the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq in a bid to protect the oil-rich city against the threat of the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS), officials said on Monday.

The Peshmerga forces started last week digging a trench along the southern suburb of Kirkuk, which has been exposed to ISIS offensive over the past few months.

Kamal Kerkuki, member of the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Iraqi Kurdistan Region, told reporters on Monday that the trench being worked on by the Peshmerga forces is aimed at maintaining the security in the city of Kirkuk against any aggression by ISIS terrorists.

Speaking to ARA News in Kirkuk, Peshmerga official Qassim Khourshid said: “ISIS terrorists have repeatedly tried to infiltrate into Kirkuk to hit headquarters of the Peshmerga and take over the city’s oil fields.”

“The trench will serve as a fortification against any offensive by the terror group,” he said.

Khourshid added that the trench project may continue to include most of the borders of the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq in order to protect the region’s people and resources against ISIS threat.

“This fortification is not aimed at separating the region from Iraq completely. Its main objective is to protect the Kurdistan Region which has sheltered thousands of Iraqis who escaped ISIS,” he said. “The Peshmerga proved its effective role in the war on this terror group, and the protection of civilians and the public properties have always been a top priority for our army.”

Kirkuk oil fields produce up to 500,000 barrels per day, according to official reports. ISIS has tried earlier to storm the city from the southern suburb, but the Peshmerga forces repelled the attacks in cooperation with the U.S.-led coalition’s air force.

Aid Convoy Enters Besieged, Starving Syrian Town
[NRTTV] Aid convoys entered the besieged Syrian town on Monday (Jan. 11) where thousands are trapped and the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
says people are reported to have died of starvation.

Dozens of trucks bearing the Red Islamic Thingy logo and carrying food and medical supplies left Damascus for Madaya near the Lebanese border as part of an agreement between warring sides.

Video shot by Rooters showed the trucks at Tukiyah, 12 kilometers away from Madaya, and then followed the trucks as they entered the city.

Another convoy was en route to two Shi'ite villages, al Foua and Kefraya in the northwestern province of Idlib 300 km (200 miles) away, the Red Thingy said on its Syria Twitter account. Under the agreement, aid was to enter Madaya and the two villages simultaneously.

Madaya is besieged by pro-Syrian government forces, while the two villages in Idlib province are encircled by rebels fighting the Syrian government.

The blockade of Madaya has become a focal issue for Syrian opposition leaders, who told a U.N. envoy last week they would not take part in talks with the government, slated for later this month, until it and other sieges are lifted.

The United Nations said on Thursday (Jan. 7) the Syrian government had agreed to allow access to Madaya, where U.N. officials say there have been credible reports of people dying of starvation.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war, puts the toll at 10, while opposition activists say it is in the dozens. Rooters could not independently confirm the reports.

One opposition activist has said people were eating leaves and plants.

The Madaya blockade began six months ago when the Syrian army and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, started a campaign to reestablish Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Belgium claims dismantling human trafficking network
[AA.TR] Belgian authorities claimed to have dismantled an international criminal organization that smuggled thousands of people to the U.K., local media reported Monday.

Citing the prosecutor's office of the Belgian province of East Flanders, Belgian newspaper Mediahuis reported Monday that the network smuggled over 3,000 undocumented Kurds and Iraqis to the U.K. through Belgium.

Six people suspected of being complicit in the smuggling operation were incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
, including two suspected leaders of the criminal network, which reportedly smuggled 20 people on average every day in trucks after payment of €3,000 ($3,300) per person, according to Mediahuis.

Two suspected leaders of the network were arrested Friday in the UK, according to Belgian news agency, Belga News.
According to An Nahar:
Belgian police aided by their British counterparts said Monday they have smashed a ring that smuggled possibly thousands of migrants into Britannia, with 12 suspects tossed in the clink

in the case.

Ghent prosecutors' spokeswoman Eva Brantegem said the two suspected ring leaders were arrested in Britannia last week in cooperation with Britannia's National Crime Agency. Belgium has asked for their extradition.

Police added that 10 Iraqi Kurdish men suspected of participating in the ring were already in jug after being arrested in Belgium between May 22 and November 25 last year.

Europol told AFP last year that it estimated around 30,000 people were involved in smuggling migrants into and through Europe in the continent's biggest migration crisis since World War II.

Hezbollah said to get arms direct from Russia, can use against Israel
[IsraelTimes] Daily Beast quotes terror group's commanders in Syria bragging that 'we are Moscow's strategic allies'

Hezbollah is receiving long-range missiles, laser-guided rockets and other sophisticated weaponry directly from Russia in Syria, and is free to use that weaponry against Israel if it so chooses, Hezbollah fighters told the Daily Beast website.

In a report published Monday, Hezbollah field commanders with troops fighting alongside Assad regime forces were quoted saying that they are getting "heavy weapons directly from Russia with no strings attached."

"We are strategic allies... The Russians are our allies and give us weapons," said a Hezbollah officer named as Commander Bakr, who oversees some 200 fighters.

A Hezbollah recruiter and trainer named Assir was quoted saying Moscow has placed no restriction on the use Hezbollah can make of Russian arms. They can be utilized "against Israel if the organization deems it necessary," the report said.

"When it comes to Israel," Assir was quoted saying, "Hezbollah doesn't take directions from anyone."

The Daily Beast noted, however, that it was "not clear" that Assir was "in a senior enough position to know what secret agreements have been made."

Both Hezbollah sources also said that the group doesn't really need Russian weaponry to take on Israel, because it has enough Iranian weaponry. "They say they are fully prepared to withstand an invasion on the southern border with the Iranian arms in their arsenal," the Daily Beast said.

Russia's deputy foreign minister said last week that Russia would not change a decision to keep Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Hezbollah off its list of terrorist organizations.

Israel has repeatedly attacked arms depots in Syria and convoys carrying weapons to Hezbollah from Syria in recent years, according to foreign reports, and has sometimes acknowledged carrying out such strikes. It has said that it will not allow advanced weaponry to reach Hezbollah forces.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin

Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
are in close coordination to ensure no mishaps occur as Russian deepens its involvement in bolstering the Assad regime, and Israel faces off warily against Hezbollah, the Iranian-funded terrorist army against which it fought the 2006 Second Leb War.

30 released, but kids still being held
Tunis, 11 January 2016:

The thirty people kidnapped from the city of Sabratha being held in the neighouring city of Surman were released yesterday, Sabratha Municipality Council reports.

The 30 were arrested on the main motorway linking the two cities. Drivers were stopped and asked to identify where they were from, and those from Sabratha were taken by the kidnappers.

They were kidnapped to be used as a bargaining tool in revenge for the Sabratha and Surman authorities having arrested their fellow gang members implicated in the kidnapping of the three Shershary children in December.

The three Shershary children are believed to still be under the control of their kidnappers in a house sieged by armed authorities in Surman since Friday. Gunfire had been exchanged during the holdout since Friday.

Cologne police blamed for New Year's Eve attacks
[Iran Press TV] Interior Minister of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region has blamed Cologne's Police Department for the disorder leading to the New Year's Eve attacks.
It wasn't the miscreants wot dunnit?
Pak and Syrian refugees were the victims of the attacks in the city on January 10.
Couldn't have been Pakistanis, that's not one of the listed refugee countries, as I recall.
Speaking in Dusseldorf on Monday, Ralf Jaeger said "police authorities should have called in more forces," adding that back-up forces were available on New Year's Eve.
But that would have required admitting that those people were causing trouble, not an admission that was permitted to be made.
Jaeger said new measures will be introduced "to eliminate drawbacks which have appeared to the current moment," adding that a new division will be set up for the "security of women" ahead of the upcoming carnival in Cologne.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, there was only one thought in the mouse's mind: I can do this! I can do this! Then the trap sprung...
six Pak nationals were attacked on Sunday by about 20 people and two of them were briefly admitted to a hospital, police said. Also on Sunday evening, five people attacked a Syrian man, who was injured in the attack.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's front man Steffen Seibert on Monday condemned the attacks on women in Cologne describing them as "intolerable." However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he said "nothing excuses" retaliatory attacks on refugees.

Merkel has proposed facilitation to deport refugees involved in crimes. Her front man said the government is looking into both "possible consequences for criminal law (and) possible political consequences for the intolerable crimes."

Seibert said Germans must not blame all the nearly 1.1 million refugees who entered the country last year, and said the government is also focused on their welfare.

Tamarod co-founder detained for 15 days for joining 'outlawed group'
[Al Ahram] Egypt's State Security Prosecution ordered on Monday the detention of activist Moheb Doss, a leading member of the anti-Morsi Tamarod group, for 15 days pending investigation on charges of joining an "outlawed group."

Doss was placed in durance vile

on 6 January in front of the Saint Mark Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo Abbasiya's district, where Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was giving a speech during the Coptic Christmas mass.

He has been accused of joining an outlawed group called 'January 25 Youth', his lawyer Mohammed Fadel told Ahram Online, saying the charges were false.

Doss was a leading member of the Tamarod campaign, which gathered milions of signatures in 2013 demanding that then-president Mohammed Morsi step down.

"The authorities don't have any evidence against him. He wasn't given the right to contact a lawyer, or even the right to be questioned by a normal prosecution, not a specialised one," Fadel added.

Fresh fighting in Obari condemned by Presidency Council
Ghat/Tripoli, 10 January 2016:

Fresh fighting broke out in the troubled southern oasis town of Obari today between Tuareg and Tebu forces. Four people are reported to have been killed and five wounded when a Tebu militia launched what is reported to have been a heavy attack in the town.

It coincided with talks starting in Sebha between representatives of the two communities on implementing the agreement signed in November brokered by the Qataris.

The clashes as well as attacks on the town’s civilian population have been condemned by the Presidency Council led by prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj. In a statement calling on both sides to respect the agreement, it said that violence could only inflame the conflict.

The ongoing conflict between Tebus adn Tuaregs in the mainly Tuareg town has resulted in 300 deaths since it started in September 2014 and resulted in over 200 families being displaced.

Spokesman Ahmed al-Assadi told AFP that Iraqi forces mistakenly identified the group of fighters as krazed killer before launching the deadly Arclight airstrike.

"The drone struck with a first missile and then two more seven minutes later," he said.

The fighters were part of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces, known as Hashid al-Shaabi, which has emerged as a dominant force against the Islamic State

(IS) across central parts of Iraq.

Assadi said nine fighters were killed and another 14 injured as a result of the strike.

"We were under attack, we called for ground support but when it arrived, the drone struck," he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...
speaking to NRT, the head of the Security and Defense committee in Iraq's Parliament, Hakim Zamli confirmed the reports but said an investigation was underway.

"We are still looking to determine the source of the plane," Zamli said, adding that authorities from the anti-IS Coalition said an Iraqi drone had accidentally hit the fighters.

Transcarpathian brawl nets four wounded

Gawd help me, I love the Ukrainians so...

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Four individuals were wounded in a brawl between members of the Ukrainian nationalist group Right Sektor and guards at a ski resort near Dragobrat on Sunday.

According to data supplied by the Russian language Ukrainian news outlet korrespondent.net, five private militiamen fought with guards at the site over a restaurant bill, wounding two guards and two militiamen. All five militia were detained for pretrial investigation by Ukrainian police.

One source says that knives were used, but others hint firearms were used, although no reports indicate that firearms were seized in the aftermath. The report also said that the five militiamen were from the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine, and were tied to the Right Sektor (Prava Sektor) political/military movement in Ukraine.

According to a Right Sektor commander, identified as Andrei Stempitsky, two of those involved in the incident were veterans of the fighting at the Donetsk airport earlier last year.

Two of them were identified, one with the call sign "Croatia," said to be a chief of the operational staff and the other as a fighter identified with the call sign "Demon," said to be commander of the 13th Right Sektor Reserve Battalion. In a separate report two other members of the group were identified with the call sign "Pedro" and "Trident".

Stempitsky said that two of the group involved were wounded by gunfire, but he failed to identify who had been wounded.

An unidentified source in the Transcarpathian region affiliated with Right Sektor denied that Right Sektor members were involved in the incident.

According to yet another report, the Right Sektor group, dressed in military camouflage uniforms, demanded to be put up at the resort but refused to pay. When security elements confronted the men, the fight started. One of the security elements was wounded with a knife. A militiamen and a guard drew down on one other before the militiamen were detained.

Although no one was wounded by gunfire, local reports continue to call the incident a shootout, so presumably gunfire was exchanged.

The incident is being likened to the shootout last August in Mukachevo, where four men were killed and several wounded following a "sit down" between local members of the Right Sektor and members of a local criminal group over smuggling routes through the area. The meeting turned out to be an ambush, according to subsequent reports.

Right Sektor recruitment is grounded in Ukrainian nationalism, but a number of groups, particularly in the Transcarpathia region are loosely affiliated with organized crime in the movement of excise goods through the area into Ukraine and Russia.

Although Russian-backed Donetsk authorities vehemently deny it, some of those running the government appear to have ties with these same groups.

Top LeT comdr Sajjad killed in Srinagar
[Daily Excelsior] In a major success for the security forces, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT) commander was killed during an encounter in the outskirts of Srinagar this evening.

Police and security forces received information about presence of Sajjad Ahmad Bhat in Gossu village of Zakura in the outskirts of Srinagar this evening.

They cordoned off the Gossu village and during searches Sajjad fired at them and tried to escape from the security cordon but security personnel fired at and killed him on the spot.

As the security forces rubbed out Sajjad Ahmad in a brief shootout in the village, his associate managed to escape from the encounter site under the cover of darkness.

Security forces called off the operation after killing Sajjad and conducting searches of the villages for his associate. The killing is said to be a major success of the security forces as he was one of the main architects of setting up of LeT bases in South Kashmire since 2007.

Sajjad Ahmad Bhat alias Peer son of Mohammad Amin Bhat resident of Aripora, Zewan in South Kashmire district of Pulwama joined LeT in 2007 and was active since then.

Police had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh to the informants leading to his arrest or killing but Sajjad managed to survive all these years but maintaining secrecy about his movements.

Sajjad was injured in October 2012 during an encounter in Pulwama district in which the then divisional commander Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Bhai was killed. He was treated and operated three times for his bullet injuries.

Sajjad first helped Rehman Bhai to set up network for LeT in South Kashmire and then after his killing he helped former LeT divisional commander Abu Qasim to strengthen the network. Qasim who was criminal mastermind of Udhampur attack on BSF last year was killed last year.

Reports said that after his injury in 2012, Sajjad mostly focused on arranging finances for the LeT.

Large number of people had gathered at Pantha Chowk in the Southern outskirts of Srinagar soon after his death and they blocked the National Highway. They were waiting for the body of Sajjad as police was still conducting legal formalities till late night.

Europe
Europe's Values Shouldn't Be Discarded In Wake Of Migrants Influx, Pope Says
[NRTTV] Pope Francis warned on Monday (Jan. 11) that the recent influx of migrants and refugees risked overwhelming European values, but said he was confident that the continent could successfully open it's arms and integrate the newcomers.

In an annual address to diplomats at the Vatican City, the pope said the flood of new arrivals, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, was a major burden for Europe and had given rise to "significant" fears over security and international terrorism. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
Pope Francis stressed the need for Europe to maintain it's principles of humanity when dealing with the influx of migrants.

"The present wave of migration seems to be undermining the foundations of that "humanistic spirit" which Europe has always loved and defended. Yet there should be no loss of the values and principles of humanity, respect for the dignity of every person, subsidiarity and solidarity," he said.

Despite the "inevitable difficulties" in trying to absorb the migrants, who brought with them different cultures and traditions, the pope said he hoped European nations would prove capable of integrating and accepting the refugees.

"I wish, then, to reaffirm my conviction that Europe, aided by its great cultural and religious heritage, has the means to defend the centrality of the human person and to find the right balance between its twofold moral responsibility to protect the rights of its citizens and to ensure assistance and acceptance to migrants," he said in his 45-minute-long address which he made in Italian.

Saudi council urges more space at hajj stampede site
[Al Ahram] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's Shura Council recommended Monday an expansion of roads leading to the site of a ritual in the annual hajj pilgrimage where more than 2,000 pilgrims died in a stampede last year.

Muslim pilgrims blamed the stampede on police road closures and poor management of the flow of hundreds of thousands of people, who found escape routes blocked when the crush occurred.

The tragedy happened as they made their way in searing temperatures to the Jamarat, the place where pilgrims ritually stone the devil in the Mina tent city in western Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials blamed pilgrims themselves for not following rules.

The Shura Council, which advises the cabinet, said the hajj ministry and other agencies should study the flow of transportation between Mina and other holy sites including nearby Mecca, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

It should also look at "raising the capacity of roads leading to the Jamarat facility, and to the accommodation areas in Mina," SPA said, without elaborating.

The study should further consider "increasing the area allotted for each pilgrim from the current size and promoting the efficiency of services, and means of security and safety," SPA added.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the interior minister who also chairs the hajj committee, ordered a probe immediately after the September 24 disaster but there has still been no word on its findings.

According to data from foreign officials, at least 2,297 pilgrims died in the stampede, which was the worst ever disaster to strike the annual ritual.

Saudi Arabia issued a corpse count of 769 two days after the incident but has given no further tally or details of the casualties.

IDF troops seize weapons in West Bank, raid university
[IsraelTimes] 'Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, propaganda' confiscated from Birzeit campus; 15 Paleostinians tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in overnight operations

Israeli soldiers raided a West Bank university overnight Sunday, seizing materials linked to local terror cells as well as "Hamas propaganda," the IDF said.

Birzeit University was one of the targets in a series of raids carried out across the West Bank overnight, an army front man said. During the operations, soldiers arrested 15 terror suspects, seized weapons stockpiles and made preparations to destroy the home of a Paleostinian man who attacked soldiers earlier this week.

The army said the raid on Birzeit, located near the West Bank city of Ramallah, was directed at terror cells believed to be operating from the campus.

"Security forces seized materials including propaganda for Hamas belonging to the illegal association 'Kotla,' known for its links to the Hamas terror organization," an IDF statement read.

"Incitement is a major factor fueling the recent terror. Localized cells affiliated with large organizations, including Hamas, promote and encourage terror and acts of violence against Israeli civilians and security forces," the statement added.

The army has stepped up its routine nightly raids in West Bank towns and villages as a wave of stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks continues across the country, with over 25 Israelis having been killed in such attacks since October. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed incitement by Paleostinian leaders for the ongoing violence.

Birzeit, considered the best university in the West Bank, has long been a center of political activism. In April of last year, Hamas beat out political rival Fatah in the Birzeit student council election, marking a dramatic turn in the school's political alliances.

Twelve of the detainees picked up overnight are suspected of direct involvement in recent attacks on civilians and security forces, with one belonging to Hamas, the army said.

During an arrest in the West Bank village of Kfar Irtah, soldiers seized weapons and ammunition stockpiles suspected of being held for use in future attacks.

Soldiers also mapped out the house of Paleostinian man who tried to stab IDF soldiers Saturday morning near the West Bank settlement of Beka'ot, east of Nablus.

Twenty-three-year old Mahmad Akab Mahmad from Kfar Jadida near Jenin was one of two assailants rubbed out in the incident. No Israelis were maimed.

Western coalition bombs ISIS cash storage facility in Iraq
No more checks in the checkbook for you, ISIS
[ARA News] DAMASCUS – The U.S.-led coalition bombed a cash storage facility for the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadi group in the city of Mosul in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, a U.S. defense official confirmed on Monday.

The airstrike, in which some 900-kilogram of bombs were used, hit the facility, destroying millions of dollars worth of cash, the official said.

“We estimate in the millions of dollars… from all their illicit stuff: oil, looting, extortion,” the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

ISIS is considered the richest terrorist group in the world, with large oil revenues, beside imposing taxes on people in areas under the group’s control and collecting ransoms from families of hostages in order to fund its daily operations across Syria and Iraq.

The radical group’s revenue from oil production used to reach more than $45 million per month. However, the amount has recently decreased due to the intensified airstrikes.

United States and allies have recently stepped up airstrikes on ISIS’s financial resources in the region. The Pentagon said in a statement that the coalition’s strikes have caused “significant damage” to ISIS’s ability to fund itself.

According to local activists, the terror group makes most of its money from taxing, oil sale, kidnapping, ransoms and the sale of antiquities.
CNN adds:
Two 2,000-pound bombs destroyed the site quickly. But the longstanding impact may be even more significant. The officials said the U.S. plans to strike more financial targets like this one to take away ISIS's ability to function as a state-like entity.

Paris ISIS Attacker May Have Taken Part In New Year's Eve Attacks, Was Arrested For Sex Assault In Cologne In '14
The Syrian man rubbed out by French police last week may have taken part in the sexual assaults in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

ISIS supporter Walid Salihi, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, was placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in 2014 in Cologne for sexually abusing women in a night club.

Salihi is said to have 'rubbed the behinds of females' and touched their 'intimate parts,' according to a German police report.

A friend of Salihi was arrested after the Cologne mass attacks, where hundreds of women were sexually assaulted, leading to suspicion that he may have been part of the mob on New Years Eve before travelling to La Belle France, Bild newspaper reports.

Salihi was rubbed out when he tried to enter the cop shoppe in Barbes, northern Gay Paree, shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and threatening officers with a knife on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo

attacks.

He was later found to have carried a fake bomb vest and a piece of paper where he pledged allegiance to ISIS.

German authorities have confirmed the Salihi lived in a centre for asylum seekers in Recklinghausen, some 60 miles north of Cologne, where police found he used seven aliases.

'We don't know who the man really is,' said Uwe Jacob, director of the local state criminal office probing his background and movements in Europe.

India-Pakistan
Pathankot and power plays
[DAWN] INDIA has provided Pakistain 'actionable intelligence' regarding the attack on the Pathankot airbase and demands satisfactory follow-up action by Pakistain if the foreign secretary talks are to start in three days' time. Our prime minister has assured the Indian prime minister he will do the necessary. The US is urging India not to postpone dialogue. Reports suggest a number of NATO

countries consider the intelligence supplied (including mobile phone conversations between the attackers and suspected handlers in Pakistain, a Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. letter, DNA samples of the attackers, their voice record samples, etc) to be credible leads if not conclusive evidence. Pakistain's international legal obligations require it to follow up on these leads to determine whether or not some elements based in Pakistain were involved in the attack.

Otherwise, the worst assumptions about Pakistain's international conduct will continue to be made by the international community. A repeat of the Mumbai stand-off would expose Pakistain to ridicule and ignominy. Pakistain could come under immense international pressure, including the threat of sanctions, if it is seen not to be cooperating with India in the hunt for possible suspects.

While suggesting Pakistain may need time to conduct its investigations, the US agrees with India that Pakistain must take the leads seriously. Along with India, the US and NATO countries lean to the view that the attack probably was planned and supervised from Pakistain by elements with a history of association with the intelligence establishment, whether with or without its direct or indirect connivance. After the judicial liquidation of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
...9th PM of Pakistain from 1973 to 1977, and 4th President of Pakistain from 1971 to 1973. He was the founder of the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP). His eldest daughter, Benazir Bhutto, would also serve as hereditary PM. In a coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq, Bhutto was removed from office and was executed in 1979 for authorizing the murder of a political opponent...
, Pakistain lost control over crucial aspects of its foreign policy to violent non-state actors backed by the security establishment. The bill for this incredible irresponsibility is still being paid.

Iraq
Bombings at Iraq cafe kill 20: Officers
[Al Ahram] Bombings killed 20 people and wounded dozens at a cafe in the Iraqi town of Muqdadiyah northeast of Baghdad on Monday, officers said. A bomb exploded at the cafe and a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle after people gathered at the scene, a police captain and an army colonel said.

More from Youth Independent:
Militants attacked a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 17 people and injuring 40 more.

A gun battle lasted almost two hours, and officials were nervous a hostage situation was ensuing. But when the fight came to a close, officials said that most of the deaths had actually been caused by car bomb that started the attack and by two suicide bombers who struck at the mall’s entrance, The New York Times reports.

An Iraqi security official claimed that the attackers killed at least 17 people, including five security force members, and injured almost 40 people.

The Islamic State (ISIS), or the terrorist group that controls big portions of Syria and Iraq, claimed responsibility for the two-in-one attack. The group said that it targeted a gathering of “rejectionits,” otherwise known as Shi’ite Muslims.

The group also said that four militants were involved and said that they killed nearly 90 people in a social media post, according to a translation by the SITE Intelligence Group, which is keeps up with jihadist communications.

“What is coming is worse and more bitter, God permitting,” the group stated.
An Nahar adds:
IS has suffered a number of military setbacks across Iraq in the past year. Security officials say fierce battles and relentless air strikes have depleted its manpower. Analysts see that as a reason for the drop in attacks targeting civilians in the capital which were an almost daily occurrence two years ago.

The Iraqi intelligence services announced on December they had detained 40 IS members as part of major swoop in the Baghdad area. They described the arrests as the continuation of an operation that saw them bust a car bomb-making cell in Baghdad earlier in 2015.

Teen who stabbed French Jewish teacher cited IS group
[FRANCE24] A teenager who stabbed a Jewish teacher in the southern French city of Marseille Monday is a Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin who told police he attacked in the name of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group, according to a prosecutor.

The attack, which left the 35-year-old teacher with an injured hand and shoulder, occurred in broad daylight in the south of the city, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin told news hounds Monday.

The 15-year-old ethnic Kurd rushed the victim from behind and stabbed him in the shoulder, then chased after him for a few metres until he fell, Robin said.

The victim fended off the assailant using his arms and legs, as well as his "holy book", which was damaged in the scuffle, the prosecutor said.

The teenage suspect "has the profile of someone who was radicalised on the Internet", Robin told a press briefing.

"He claimed to have been acting for Daesh [Islamic State]," Robin said, using the Arabic acronym for the IS group.

"You get the sense that he does not have a full grasp of the fundamentals of Islam," he added.

A good student radicalised online
The boy admitted to Sherlocks that he planned to arm himself and kill police as soon as he is released, according to Robin.

The prosecutor said the teenager's family was unaware of his radicalisation and that he was a "good student".

"It appears there was a form of premeditation" with the intent of killing the victim because of his religion, Robin said.

The teenager, who will turn 16 next week, faces charges of "attempted murder on grounds of religion" and "defence of terrorism".

Reacting to the incident on Twitter, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said, "The anti-Semitic aggression against a teacher in Marseille is revolting."

The teacher was on his way to work at the Franco-Hebraic Institute when he was attacked.

Radical cleric Bashir to front court in bid for early prison release
[CHANNELNEWSASIA] Terrorist convict Abu Bakar Bashir
... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Bashir was jugged and then released in the wake of the 2002 Bali bombings, which he blamed on a conspiracy among the U.S., Israel, and Australia ...
will appear in court Tuesday (Jan 12) for a judicial review to get an early release from his 15-year prison sentence.

The trial was moved to Cilacap, central Java, from its original location at the South Jakarta district court after judges approved a request from Bashir's team of attorneys to have it at a more convenient location, because of his age and frail health.

holy warrior group in 2014, is being held at the Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap regency.

Bashir, known as the spiritual leader of holy warrior organization, Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid, is serving 15 years in prison.

In 2011, he was found guilty of funding military training of a terrorist group in Aceh.

He appealed to the Jakarta High Court, which reduced his sentence to nine years.

But, the Supreme Court overruled that decision and changed the sentence back to 15 year before Bashir asked for a judicial review.

In Tuesday's judicial review, Bashir will be represented by a team of ten attorneys, who will be presenting five new witnesses in the trial, three of whom are also serving time in the Nusakambangan prison.

Many of the hardline holy man's supporters are expected to attend the trial which is open to the public.

Bashir's attorneys have urged them to exercise restraint and not cause any security problems.

"They have already agreed on that, and they already promised us they will only come and give mental support but for the security institution, please be careful, and be alert for provocateurs who might provoke the situation," said lawyer Mahendradatta.

The judicial review is expected to stretch over three to four sessions, which could last for several weeks.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuelan High Court Finds Opposition Congress in Contempt
[ABCNEWS.GO] Venezuela's Supreme Court on Monday ordered the country's new opposition congress to unseat three barred politicians and declared that any action the legislature takes in the meantime is null.
The judges were appointed by the late Ooogo Chavez, one assumes.
Opponents of the socialist revolution launched by Hugo Chavez took control of congress for the first time in 17 years last week. The high court barred three opposition politicians from taking their seats to give officials time to look into allegations of electoral fraud.

The decision angered members of the opposition, who called it an attempt to undermine their historic victory in legislative elections in December, and they swore the politicians in anyway. They said rigged courts should not be allowed to undo the will of the voters.

On Monday, the Supreme Court, which the opposition considers an arm of President Nicolas Maduro's government, upped the ante in the confrontation by ordering congress to unseat the three deputies from the remote state of Amazonas. Its actions are null in the meantime.

The decision, which applies to "all acts that have been taken or will be taken" by the new congress, seems to render the body powerless for now.

The politicians have not yet passed any legislation, so there isn't much to nullify.

But earlier on Monday, congress began the process of debating a law that would give amnesty to jugged
You have the right to remain silent...

groups consider to be political prisoners.

Lawmakers also formed a congressional committee to look into irregularities in the rush appointment of 13 Supreme Court judges just after the socialist party lost Dec. 6 legislative elections.

Iran Sacks Senior Security Official over Saudi Embassy Attack
[ALMANAR.LB] Iran has sacked a security bigshot over his failure to stop the attack on Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's embassy.

Safar Ali Baratlou's replacement as security deputy to Tehran's governor general was already under review, but the interior ministry said "a blind eye could not be turned" to what happened at the embassy.

The mission and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, Iran's second city, were attacked by protesters angered by Riyadh's execution of prominent holy man, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

"After initial investigations, failures... were confirmed" in connection with the "assault on the Saudi embassy", the ministry said late Sunday, cited by the official IRNA news agency.

"Because of the importance of the matter, the interior ministry cannot overlook the smallest failures and factors that led to this incident," the statement added of the attack and Baratlou's dismissal.

Saudi regime executed Sheikh Nimr on January 2. He was a vocal supporter of the mass pro-democracy protests against Riyadh, which erupted in Eastern Province in 2011, where a Shia majority has long complained of marginalization.

Riyadh then cut diplomatic ties with Tehran after the incidents, deepening the crisis over the execution.

Other Arab countries followed suit and severed or reduced relations with Iran.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani strongly condemned the attacks as "totally unjustifiable", urging judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani to deal with wrongdoers immediately.

About 50 people have been placed in durance vile

over the attacks.

"Once and for all such assaults on the country's security, an insult to the establishment's authority and position, should be prevented by punishing perpetrators and those who ordered this blatant crime," Rouhani said in a letter to Larijani on Wednesday.

FBI's Clinton probe expands to public corruption track
[FOXNEWS] The FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Liberatress of Libya and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edward Everett ...
's use of private email as secretary of state has expanded to look at whether the possible "intersection" of Clinton Foundation work and State Department business may have violated public corruption laws, three intelligence sources not authorized to speak on the record told Fox News.

This track is in addition to the focus on classified material found on Clinton's personal server.

"The agents are investigating the possible intersection of Clinton Foundation donations, the dispensation of State Department contracts and whether regular processes were followed," one source said.

The development follows press reports over the past year about the potential overlap of State Department and Clinton Foundation work, and questions over whether donors benefited from their contacts inside the administration.

The Clinton Foundation is a public charity, known as a 501(c)(3). It had grants and contributions in excess of $144 million in 2013, the most current available data.

Inside the FBI, pressure is growing to pursue the case.

One intelligence source told Fox News that FBI agents would be "screaming" if a prosecution is not pursued because "many previous public corruption cases have been made and successfully prosecuted with much less evidence than what is emerging in this investigation."

#1  I've read that the FBI director is a straight shooter. There seems to be overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing by Hillary with respect to her email server. If the same situation exists on the Clinton Foundation then it is going to be hard to restrain the Bureau. AG Lynch will be in a very tough spot. And so will sweet Hilary.

#2  Grifting is risky at the level you have decided to ascend.

I saw what you had already. So shady.

But what I want to get right is Benghazi.
This needs to be a criminal probe with a special prosecutor at this point.

To excuse this or suggest otherwise will bring more pain.

#3  I've read that the FBI director is a straight shooter.

We may soon find out if this is true or not. Director Comey is in a rather tough spot. It is my understanding that there is already some some 'smoke in the teepee' at the higher levels at FBI main. As the evidence of wrongdoing continues to mount, it will be very interesting to see what transpires.

As the momentum for a non-establishment candidate continues and democratic defeat appears eminent, the Beest may decide to forgo another defeat scenario and opt out using the medical card.

If a formal indictment or Special Prosecutor surfaces, she may also play the medical card and excuse herself from the electoral process. I suspect this scenario is unlikely, so much so that Comey could even be replaced if it is threatened. In the end, Champ will come to the Beest's rescue. They are after all, birds of a feather.

Both however, are winning scenarios as far as I am concerned.

#6  Seems to me that any expansion of the investigation is merely a way to delay and dither.

Stretch it all out past the primaries and election, again.

It's a tried and true tactic by the criminals in politics.

But then I'm cynical.

#7  If 0bean pardoned her after she was indicted and before she was elected, I think/hope that would be the end of her and everyone associated with her.

It seems that if a prosecution is on its way, that it would come shortly before the general election. I don't see how the Donks could recover.

#9  If the investigation threatens to lead back to the White House and there is no way to stop it then Champ may have no choice but to pardon her. If I was the FBI director I'd be watching my back pretty damn carefully but if anything happens to him, be it resignation or ouster or accident, that's gonna look bad too. Even ABC might have to mention it.

#10  Seems to me you would have to do something before the primaries, after they start your hands are tied until she loses the primaries. If she wins I can't see anything going forward.

Afghanistan
3 school students killed, 8 wounded in rocket attack by militants in Khost
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least three school students bit the dust and eight others were maimed in a rocket attack by anti-government armed faceless myrmidons in southeastern Khost province

of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) said the incident took place this morning in Bak district after a mortar round landed in a primary school.

A statement by MoE said two female students were among those killed in the attack, urging the Afghan security institutions to take immediate steps in identifying and trying those involved behind the incident.

No group including the Talibs has so far grabbed credit behind the attack.

Khost is among the relatively volatile provinces in southeastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed krazed killer groups including the notorious Haqqani network bandidos bully boys are actively operating in a number of its districts.

Found in the late 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani, the terrorist network is accused of staging numerous cross-border attacks from their base in North Wazoo, including the 19-hour siege at the US Embassy in Kabul

in September 2011.

The network is allied with al-Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organizations in the region and was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization on September 7, 2012 by the US Department of State.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Mumbai police force-feed thief dozens of bananas
[CHANNELNEWSASIA] Indian police successfully deployed an unusual technique to retrieve a gold chain that a thief had swallowed while officers were in hot pursuit - they force-fed him more than 40 bananas.

The man denied snatching the chain from a woman in the street in Mumbai and swallowed it in a desperate bid to conceal his crime last week, but hospital X-rays suggested otherwise.

Police in the western Indian city administered an enema which failed to yield the desired result. Doctors said an operation would be the best way forward, but coppers decided it would be too expensive and opted instead for the bananas.

"He was fed more than 40 bananas throughout the day," Mumbai police Senior Inspector Shankar Dhanavade told AFP.

"Eventually the chain was found. We made him wash and disinfect it," the policeman added.

The 25-year-old man appeared in court on Friday and is in police custody, said Dhanavade.

According to reports, it was not the first time Mumbai police had turned to the fruit in order to recover a stolen item. In July last year a chain was retrieved after a thief was made to eat two dozen bananas and drink several litres of milk laced with laxatives, the Hindustan Times reported.

Months earlier in April, a thief was fed five dozen bananas after swallowing a gold chain with a large pendant. The thief successfully excreted the loot. But the disgusted victim refused to touch it and instead took it to a jeweller in a plastic bag, the newspaper said.

Europe
Swedish police withheld reports of sexual assaults at music fest
[Al Ahram] Swedish police were criticised on Monday after admitting they failed to release information about alleged sexual assaults against women by young immigrants at a Stockholm summer music festival over the past two years.

There were 38 reports of rape and sexual assault filed after the We Are Sthlm festival, which uses the postal abbreviation for Stockholm, in 2014 and 2015, according to police.

The allegations were first made public in a report by the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, citing internal police memos, and the events appear to mirror similar incidents on New Year's Eve in the German city of Cologne.

"We certainly should have publicly released this information, no doubt. Why it did not happen we simply do not know," police front man Varg Gyllander told AFP Monday.

Police would not say how many men were suspected in the alleged assaults, but DN reported that as many as 50 Afghan refugees who had come to Sweden without their parents were suspected to be involved.

Documents sent by police to AFP show allegations of 17 sexual assaults and one rape during the 2014 music festival, and 19 sexual assaults and one rape last year.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven on Monday was critical of the police and their handling of the incident.

"I feel a very strong anger that young women are not able to go to a music festival without being offended, sexually harassed and attacked," Lofven told news hounds.

"It is a major democratic problem for the whole of our country," he said of the police failure to release timely information of the incidents to the public.

Authorities have promised a full investigation.

The news emerged after reports of New Year's Eve attacks in Cologne, where more than 500 women were allegedly sexually assaulted or robbed by men of foreign origin including recently arrived refugees, according to German authorities.

#2  This story is bogus. Several police officers tried to contact the mentioned newspaper, and calls were not responded to. The paper's editors felt information on this attack would be support for the center right party SD, and blew it off.
When the Cologne attacks were revealed, they (the newspaper) suddenly were interested. They, the newspaper are trying to do a case of blame shifting.

Clinton received plan to secretly galvanize Palestinian protests
[IsraelTimes] Former envoy to Israel emailed proposal to then-US secretary of state that Paleostinian, Israeli women should spark Tahrir-style protests to push sides into talks

A former top US diplomat suggested Washington foment Arab Spring-style Paleostinian protests as a method of pushing the Israeli leadership into making moves, a new batch of emails from former secretary of state Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Timothy Pickering ...
shows.

#7  "A former top US diplomat suggested Washington foment Arab Spring-style Paleostinian protests as a method of pushing the Israeli leadership into making moves"

Interesting it doesn't occur to them to try to foment Arab Spring-style protests to remove the Paleo leadership. In every other case the Arab Spring-style protests removed a dictatorship but these yahoos want to support one.

Who is this former top US diplomat?

#8  "On the Palestinian side the male culture is to use force,” Pickering wrote. “Palestinian men will not for long patiently demonstrate — they will be inclined over time and much too soon to be frustrated and use force. Their male culture comes close to requiring it.”

He nails the problem right there and yet doesn't seem to really figure it out at the same time. Fascinating.
