GOP Rep Calls For SecNavy To Resign Over Forcibly Desegregating Marine Corps Boot Camp
[Daily Caller] GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter called Tuesday for Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to resign over his attempt to force the Marine Corps to end gender segregation at its boot camp.

Consistent disputes between the Navy and the Marine Corps, according to Hunter, undermine the ability of Mabus to lead, since he appears primarily focused on restructuring the Marine Corps to serve his own objectives, The Washington Examiner reports.

"The only way this relationship can be repaired, I believe, is through the leadership of a new Navy Secretary -- specifically one who does not regularly make a point to undercut the Marine Corps, distract it from its mission and insult its leaders," Hunter said in a letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter.

"I respectfully ask that you provide assurance that recruit training and Officer Candidate School will continue operating as they have, without any such disruption to the reliable and effective organization and methods for developing and training Marines," Hunter added.

DOES CO-SUPERPOWER-VS-CO-SUPERPOWER LIMITED NUKE WARS STILL MEET THE USDOD'S BELIEF OF NO MORE MAJOR WARS TO OCCUR AROUND THE WORLD THRU YEAR 2050 IFF NOT 2100 = END-OF-CENTURY???

LIMITED NUKE WAR = WOMEN IN COMBAT, AS COMPARED OR OPPOSED TO UN PEACEKEEPING OR "POLICE ACTIONS"???

The way things are deteriorating betwwen OWG Co-Superpowers China + Iran versus US Regional Allies, the Globies, etal. may find out the reality sooner than they think.

Iconic Marine Sgt. R. Lee Ermey of ‘Gunny Time' Reveals the One Firearm He'd Choose if He Could Have Only One
Bonus:

With the presidential primaries about to kick off, we asked Ermey which candidate might be the best shot. While he wouldn't directly name any figures on the campaign trail, Ermey spoke glowingly of Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump, Jr.

"Well, I know Donny Trump," Ermey said, adding, "He's on my shooting team ... this guy's a 'dinger.' He can lay on the 600-yard line and never miss the black."

Ermey also speculated the shooting gene could be in the Trump family: "I'm thinking, if Donny Trump shoots that well ... then, dad must be a shooter too."

While not endorsing Trump, Ermey offered one observation about the candidate: "I do know that if Trump gets to be our president, our commander in chief, I know one thing -- our Second Amendment rights are solid as a rock."

More Air Force drones are crashing than ever as mysterious new problems emerge
"The Reaper has been bedeviled by a rash of sudden electrical failures that have caused the 21/2-ton drone to lose power and drop from the sky, according to accident-investigation documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Investigators have traced the problem to a faulty starter-generator, but have been unable to pinpoint why it goes haywire or devise a permanent fix."

#6  IIRC, UAVs always have a higher crash rate than manned aircraft. It is expected. It is built into the system operational design. Single string systems with lots of possible point failures.

From the article, it sounds like they were caught out on this lack of system redundancy to get the apparent airframe unit cost down.

Then all it takes is a bad batch of , say motor generators to get thru QA/QC, and the wapo has this month's gloom & doom, They-Are-Wasting-Dollars-on-Defense Wimmins-and-Chilluns-Hardest-hit liberal cry fest.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
El Chapo had 'Fast & Furious' .50 cal rifle at his hideout
[Nat Review] A .50-caliber rifle found at Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's hideout in Mexico was funneled through the gun-smuggling investigation known as Fast and Furious, sources confirmed Tuesday to Fox News.
Read me that serial number one more time please. Yep, that's it !
A .50-caliber is a massive rifle that can stop a car, or as it was intended, take down a helicopter.

After the raid on Jan. 8 in the city of Los Mochis that killed five of his men and wounded one Mexican marine, officials found a number of weapons inside the house Guzman was staying, including the rifle, officials said. When agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives checked serial numbers of the eight weapons found in his possession, they found one of the two .50-caliber weapons traced back to the ATF program, sources said.

Who unleashed Climatism?
h/t Gates of Vienna
[WattsUpWithThat] This article is intended mostly for American audiences. Today, it seems almost normal that the IPCC, UNFCCC and CAN (Climate Action Network International) interfere in American internal affairs, deciding who are scientists and who are not, telling us how much energy to use and from what sources, and generally sowing discord and polarizing society (with enormous success, I must admit). For more than 30 years, their claims of dangerous global warming caused by CO2 emissions have served as an excuse for this invasion. If there is a "problem," and the "problem" is global and America is its main cause, they reason, why not gang up on America?

But the "problem" is imaginary, and has always been imaginary. The readers of this site know that. Serious scientific assessments have never come to alarming conclusions, even when assuming exaggerated climate sensitivity to CO2. So what happened? To answer this question, we need to clearly understand three historical facts:

1) Almost all climate science between 1970 and 1992 was conducted in the USA.

2) Almost all climate politics in the same period originated elsewhere.

3) Climate politics led to climate pseudo-science, not the other way around.

#1  With regard to the climate, I came across this while following the excitements in Germany in recent weeks. The conclusion bears attention as well:

Giant icebergs slow global warming

[DeutscheWelle] Researchers have found that the plume of cold water released from massive icebergs increases carbon storage in the seas - far more than previously thought. This negative feedback loop significantly slows climate change.
...
"We still don't fully understand the climate system - I wouldn't be surprised if there were further both negative and positive feedback that could possibly accelerate or slow down global warming," Bigg concluded [study author Grant Bigg, an Earth systems professor at the University of Sheffield in England].
Posted by: trailing wife || 01/20/2016 10:12 Comments || Top||

#2  Lots of negative feedbacks none of which are not well understood by our "settled science" alarmists. For example, cloud formation. While clouds can trap heat (positive feedback) they also reflect sun light (negative feedback). Any excess of heat at the surface leads to, you guessed it, more evaporation. Evaporation transfers latent heat to the top of the atmosphere where when clouds form that latent heat is released and radiated out into space.

Colonel Richard H.M. Outzen: Eight Signs Our Afghan Efforts Are Working
[National Defense University Press] As the defense attach'e tasked with reopening the U.S. Defense Attach'e Office in Kabul, Afghanistan, beginning in late 2014, I had the opportunity to watch "fighting season 2015" unfold from a proximate vantage point.
Certainly no questions about where this fellow is coming from, or where he is going.
He's certainly a "half-full glass" kind of guy. I'd appreciate some independent assessment of the situation. If he's right then another year or three of steady support and no-drawdown should make some difference.
Moved to Opinion.

Government
Bob Lonsberry: Don't Give Up the Ship
[NewsRadio WHAM 180] It's unfathomable. The account of two U. S. Navy vessels being seized by the Iranian navy earlier this week seems completely implausible. No part of it makes any sense.

The story is that two river patrol boats -- bristling modern-day incarnations of the Vietnam swift boats -- were navigating south from Kuwait to Bahrain. At some point, via some means, the two boats, with their contingent of five sailors each, surrendered to the Iranians.

Two accounts have been offered as to how that happened. The first was that one of the vessels lost its engine and that they both then drifted into Iranian waters. The other was that the two boats had been operating fine, but inadvertently navigated into Iranian territory.

Simply put, they got lost. Neither account seems possible.
Finally, someone has said in the media what I've been wondering these last couple of days. How on earth did this happen other than someone high up ordered the sailors to surrender and endure humiliation?

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claims responsibility for ‪#‎BachaKhanUniversity‬ attack, says reports

Militants entered the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda district of the province and opened fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels.

21 killed in Pak university terror attack

A mushaera & exams were underway with participation of around 700 students

The Bacha Khan University teaches over 3,000 students and hosted an additional 600 visitors on Wednesday for a poetry recital, the vice chancellor said.

Terming the terrorist attack at Pakistan's Bacha Khan University in Charsada "very unfortunate", BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said terrorists are not able to do anything in India, hence they are now creating tensions in Pakistan.

#7  Would you be satisfied with a pistol, Sven? From AFP:

Earlier in the day, Pakistanis were hailing Syed Hamid Husain, a chemistry lecturer who tried to protect his students by opening fire on the militants before being shot himself, as a "martyr" and "gentleman".

Witnesses said the professor had been known as "The Protector" even before he died shielding his students.

Geology student Zahoor Ahmed said the tutor had warned him not to leave the building after the first shots were fired.

"He was holding a pistol in his hand," he said.

"Then I saw a bullet hit him. I saw two militants were firing. I ran inside and then managed to flee by jumping over the back wall."

"He would always help the students and he was the one who knew all their secrets... He was referred to by students as 'The Protector'," geology student Waqar Ali told AFP.

ISIS Cuts Fighters' Salaries In Half As Group Suffers Crippling Blows
[Huffpoo] ISIS fighters aren't getting any year-end pay raises this January. In fact, in response to mounting military and economic pressure across Syria and Iraq, the terror group is slashing salaries, newly-leaked ISIS documents show.

The administrative records reveal that ISIS leaders in Raqqa, the group's de-facto capital in Syria, reduced the monthly salaries of all fighters by half sometime around November or December of last year, just as the U.S. began to dramatically increase its airstrikes against ISIS-held oil fields and other financial targets.

"On account of the exceptional circumstances the Islamic State is facing, it has been decided to reduce the salaries that are paid to all mujahideen by half," reads the official notice, which was translated and first published by Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, an ISIS expert and fellow at the Middle East Forum. "It is not allowed for anyone to be exempted from this decision, whatever his position."

It also notes that fighters will continue to be paid twice a month, as usual.

Regime defends $1.7B payment to Iran, denies it was '€˜ransom' for prisoners
[Wash Times] The White House dismissed Republican accusations Tuesday that the U.S. paid Iran $1.7 billion as ransom to gain the release of American prisoners, saying the payment settled a long-running claim by Tehran over military equipment.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said it was "not a coincidence" that the financial issue was settled at the same time as the administration swapped prisoners with Tehran and lifted U.S. economic sanctions in a deal to limit Iran's nuclear program. But he said the release of the four Americans was not linked to the payment, and instead resulted from "diplomatic opportunities" that arose during the negotiations.
If the same logic follows, would then the raid on Abbottabad be an election opportunity 'vis a vis' a coincidence ?
"This is Exhibit A in the administration pursuing tough, principled diplomacy in a way that actually ends up making the American people safer and advancing the interests of the United States more effectively than military action," Mr. Earnest said.

Down Syndrome People Face '€˜Extinction' Through Selective Birthing
[Breitbart] A simple new blood test that greatly facilitates the detection of Down Syndrome in unborn children may spell the "extinction" of Down Syndrome people, an article in the Telegraph suggests, since around 90 per cent of those performing the test end up aborting their babies.

In the article, writer Tim Stanley notes that the selective abortion of Down babies jumped by 34 per cent between 2011 and 2014, due to "increased access to blood tests via private clinics," and the simplification of the detection procedure will only increase the phenomenon.

Stanley cites the head of a midwife association in Denmark, who declared: "When you can discover almost all the foetuses with Down Syndrome, then we are approaching a situation in which almost all of them will be aborted."

#6  Next category; those likely to be born into 'white privilege'

According to The Atlantic in 2014:

An African-American woman is almost five times likelier to have an abortion than a white woman, and a Latina more than twice as likely, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The rate of abortion among American women is currently at its lowest point since Roe v. Wade, according to a recent report by the Guttmacher Institute. About 1.1 million abortions were performed in 2011, at a rate of 16.9 abortions for every 1,000 women of childbearing age, down from a peak of 29.3 per 1,000 in 1981. Since the report’s release in February, the reason why has been the subject of much debate. Its authors and abortion-rights supporters point to the increase in contraceptive use and sexual education, while anti-abortion activists counter that the decrease is a result of abstinence-only teachings and state restrictions.

Belgian Fugitive Involved in Paris attacks Nabbed in Morocco
A Belgian of Moroccan origin
...who is more Moroccan than Belgian...
who managed last November to slip police net after the terror Paris attacks that claimed 130 lives, was captured lately in Morocco.

According to Moroccan authorities, the suspect was arrested in the Atlantic coast port city of Mohammadia, near Casablanca. Investigators said the man had sojourned in Syria where he fought with Al-Nusra front militants before joining ISIS.

While in Syria, the suspect received military training and made ties with ISIS field commanders, including the mastermind of the Paris attacks, and other terrorists who threatened attacks in France and Belgium. During his training camp, he learnt to handle different weapons and guerrilla tactics before leaving Syria for Turkey. He then travelled to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands before he arrived in Morocco.
So he got his ticket punched with all the right qualifications and tours of duty...
According to the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (Morocco’s FBI), the suspect had travelled to Syria along with one of the suicide bombers who blow up himself near Paris national stadium during the November 13 terror attacks in Paris. He built strong ties with Abaaoud, 28, during his stay in war-torn Syria. Abaaoud, the Belgian architect of the Paris massacre, was killed with other terror suspects when police raided a house in the Saint Denis Paris suburb.

Party Time! Soddy planes strike Houthi secret meeting
Arab Coalition warplanes intensified strikes targeting a secret meeting of Houthi leaders, killing several of them, reported Al Bayan.

Military sources said Houthi militia and forces loyal to ousted President Saleh are terrified by the presence of military units of national army and Arab Coalition on mountains near Sana'a. Therefore, the rebels have spread hundreds of their troops near the capital.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, on Monday met Abdul Jalil Al Mukhlafi, Deputy Prime Minister of Yemen and Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is on a visit to the UAE.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), they discussed developments in Yemen and progress of the political progress as systematic hurdles created by the rebels continue to block international efforts and make it difficult to set the next date for the meeting.

The parties stressed the importance of continuing political efforts based on Resolution No. 2216, the Gulf Co-operation Council initiative and the outcome of the National Dialogue.

They discussed humanitarian developments and stressed that the situation should be addressed with resolve especially because the rebels continue to procrastinate over the issue.

The parties also discussed regional and international efforts for Yemeni issue.

Southeast Asia
Daesh-linked terrorists bomb port terminal in Basilan
[The Standard] Armed men believed to be members of a Philippine terrorist group with links to Daesh detonated a bomb Tuesday morning in a port terminal in Lamitan, Basilan, as the military finally admitted the presence of nine foreign terrorists.

Lamitan chief of police Gean Gallardo said the bomb went off near the main entrance to the terminal. The blast damaged a water tank and shattered windows but there were no reported casualties.

The bombing comes a day after Armed Forces chief Gen. Hernando Iriberri confirmed that at least nine foreign terrorists have sought sanctuary in Mindanao for years, assisting local terrorists in bomb making techniques.

Iriberri flew to Mindanao shortly after the Jakarta bombing, emphasizing the need for security forces to increase pressure on the Abu Sayyaf and other militant groups harboring foreign jihadis in Basilan, Sulu and Central Mindanao.

Of the nine foreign terrorists, four were Malaysian nationals identified as University Malaya lecturer Mahmud bin Ahmad, former Selayang Municipal Council employee Muhammad Joraimee Bin Awang Raimee, Mohammad Amin Baco and Jeknal bin Adil.

Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said their compatriots who were enlisted by the Islamic State fled to Mindanao after an intensified crackdown was launched against them in 2013. He said the Islamist militants are associated with Daulah Islamiyah Asia Tenggara (Southeast Asia Islamiya Network) with links to Daesh.

In January 2015, Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir was killed in a clash with commandos in the ill-fated Operation Exodus in Mamasapano, where 44 policemen were slain. Troops also killed an Indonesian terrorist, Sucipto Ibrahim Ali, a member of the Mujahidin Indonesia Timur, along with six Filipino militants, as well as Moho Najib bin Husen last year.

Iriberri said it was not clear if the Abu Sayyaf was receiving funding from Daesh or other terrorist organizations.

He also said they are checking into reports that an Indonesian terrorist who led the attack in Jakarta might have fled to Mindanao and eventually established an alliance with local rebels.

Iraqi Kurdistan arrests ISIS-linked terror cell in Sulaymaniyah
SULAYMANIYAH – Kurdish Counter-Terrorism special forces arrested on Tuesday a terror cell linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in Sulaymaniyah city of Iraqi Kurdistan.

The members of the terror cell were reportedly planning to conduct a series of terrorist attacks across the Kurdistan Region.

Sulaymaniyah’s police department said in a statement that the Counter-Terrorism special forces raided suspected houses and arrested several terrorists.

“The forces also found a large deal of explosive devices in the raided houses in central Sulaymaniyah,” the statement added.

The members of the ISIS-linked terror cell were Arab and Kurdish jihadis recruited by ISIS, the police reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Sulaymaniyah, a police official said that hundreds of local residents of Iraqi Kurdistan have been recruited by ISIS group over the past few years.

“We are aware of such a movement inside the Kurdistan Region, and our special forces are pursing every citizen involved in contacts with the ISIS terror group,” he said.

After three Katyusha rockets hit the school, the Turkish military responded by bombarding ISIS positions across the border with artillery.

That came just days after Turkey claimed it killed 200 members of ISIS, following its bombardment of positions in both Iraq and Syria, in response to a suicide kaboom in Istanbul a week ago in which 10 Germans died.

Judge rejects Obama's executive privilege claim over Fast and Furious records
An Obama appointed
federal judge has rejected President Barack Obama's assertion of executive privilege to deny Congress access to records pertaining to Operation Fast and Furious, a gunrunning probe that allegedly allowed thousands of weapons to flow across the border into Mexico.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled Tuesday that the Justice Department's public disclosures about its response to the so-called "gun walking" controversy undercut Obama's executive privilege claim.

"There is no need to balance the need against the impact that the revelation of any record could have on candor in future executive decision making, since any harm that might flow from the public revelation of the deliberations at issue here has already been self-inflicted," Jackson wrote. "The Department itself has already publicly revealed the sum and substance of the very material it is now seeking to withhold. Since any harm that would flow from the disclosures sought here would be merely incremental, the records must be produced."

Jackson said she wasn't questioning the propriety of Obama's claim of privilege, but ruling that the claim could not be sustained in view of other information the Justice Department had released on the topic, chiefly an Office of Inspector General report released in September 2012.

"This ruling is not predicated on a finding that the withholding was intended to cloak wrongdoing on the part of government officials or that the withholding itself was improper," the judge wrote.

The difference is Sanders would completely dismantle all that. Maybe I'm giving Trump too much credit, but my idea of a true capitalist and not a crony capitalist is someone who believes in free enterprise instead of sweetheart deals with politicians.

Gowdy, Attkisson & Benghazi Families Unite Against Hillary Clinton
"Over the last week, Clinton and her allies have faced fire from three different angles of the Benghazi/Email scandal story. Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) explained that the testimony seems to contradict the Obama administration (and State Department) story about what happened on the ground in Benghazi. Journalist Sharyl Attkisson agrees with Gowdy, saying that the evidence is now "overwhelming" and proves that the government has lied to us about what happened. Finally, the families of the Benghazi dead and those who survived are beginning to fight back against Hillary Clinton's attempts to paint them as either liars or simpletons."

Daesh backers to blame for Deir al-Zour massacre: Syria
[Iran Press TV] The Syrian government has strongly denounced the recent massacre by Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
snuffies in the eastern Deir al-Zour Province, saying the responsibility for the crime lies with the supporters of terrorist groups operating across the Arab state.

In two identical letters to United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon and the head of the UN Security Council, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that such killings are a continuation of a series of barbaric and methodical terrorist acts by gangs, Syria's official news agency SANA reported on Tuesday.

The ministry said the bully boy groups are receiving funds from some regional countries as well as states outside the region, noting that these countries recruit snuffies to serve their interests.

The ministry also pointed out that such crimes would not have happened without the constant funding, arming, and logistic support provided by intelligence agencies of certain states especially Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
, and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
.

The Syrian government affirms its determination to continue defending the Syrian people and confronting terrorism, the ministry emphasized.

The letter also reiterates its call for the UN chief and the Security Council to condemn such terrorist acts.

It also urges the UN to assume its responsibilities regarding counter-terrorism by taking proper measures against certain states that continue to conspire against Syria.

The developments come as Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri snuffies recently kidnapped at least 400 civilians, including women and kiddies, in an assault on al-Baghaliyeh neighborhood of of Deir al-Zour.

All of the abductees were Sunni Muslims, including families of pro-government fighters. They were transported to other areas under Daesh [Islamic State] control.

Following its Saturday attack on Deir al-Zour, some 300 non-combatants were killed in the Daesh [Islamic State] attack on the troubled city.

Putin's People Are Not Happy With Us
"Not only has the network been further discredited by having to defend increasingly-obvious Kremlin deceptions, RT's claims about its importance and reach have also been undermined. Despite their boasts that they have the largest online audience of any news agency in the world, leaked documents and independent analysis of RT's own content show that the Kremlin-run news outlet is misrepresenting its viewership and in fact has a minuscule audience in the West. Not only are "its most-watched segments are on 'metrosexuals, bums,' and earthquakes," but its most popular content are video reposted from other news agencies. Many Youtube videos which feature RT's original content average between 200 and 300 views -- hardly comparable to the BBC or private networks like CNN or Fox."

Man accused in fire at Somali restaurant appears in court
A man accused of setting a fire that heavily damaged a Somali restaurant in Grand Forks has made his first appearance on a federal complaint. Twenty-five-year-old Matthew Gust, of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, is facing charges of malicious use of an explosive device and use of a destructive device during a crime of violence.

The Dec. 7 fire at the Juba Coffee House was started by a homemade explosive that was made with a 40-ounce beer bottle. It happened three days after vandals spray-painted what some have described as a Nazi-like symbol on the business, along with the words “go home.”

Gust was not asked to enter a plea at Tuesday’s hearing. A detention hearing is scheduled Friday.

Gust was originally charged in state court with felony arson.
Lock him up for a good 50 years. Arson is an ugly, ugly crime.

Video of U.S. sailors released by Iran made Kerry angry, frustrated
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
has said that the video of American sailors released by Iran made him angry and frustrated.
Yeah. Tut tut. And tut. Pass the Heinz ketchup.
Video footage showed the US Navy personnel kneeling with their hands behind their heads as they were apprehended, something Kerry made clear he was deeply unhappy about.
"Yep. Just tugged at my heartstrings."
"I was very angry. I was very, very frustrated and angry that that was released," Kerry told John Berman on CNN's "New Day."
Yeah, buddy. Betcha he got down there and chewed the carpet, maybe even beat the servants.
"I raised it immediately with the Iranians. It was not put out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government directly, it was put out I think by the military over there, the (Revolutionary Guard), who is opposed to what we are doing."
"So just ignore it."
The 10 sailors were tossed in the calaboose

with two navy boats by Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) after illegally entering into Iranian territorial water on January 12 and released within 24 hours. Iran said the sailors were released after the United States apologized for the intrusion and gave assurances it would not happen again.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian teen detained for Sunday's deadly knife attack
[Ynet] 15-year-old allegedly responsible for stabbing Dafna Meir to death in Otniel has been captured in a Paleostinian city, apparently acted alone.

Security forces on Tuesday morning captured a 15-year-old, Morad Adais, who allegedly murdered Dafna Meir on Sunday in a terror attack at her home. He was apprehended at his home in Yatta, near Otniel, where the murder took place and south of Hebron.

It appears that like most of the holy warriors in the wave of violence that began in September, Adais acted alone and had no previous record, thus making it extremely difficult for security forces to know of his plans in advance.

Har Hevron Regional Council chief Yochai Damari said the terrorist entered Otniel by finding a breach in the settlement's defenses.

Video released on Monday showed the terrorist's escape from Otniel. Reports that day said the terrorist appeared to have fled in the direction of Yatta. Tuesday's capture also put to rest rumors that the terrorist was a laborer at Otniel. Adais was not employed as a laborer and presumably snuck into Otniel. The settlement is fenced only in the forested area between one of the large yeshivot and Highway 60, from which holy warriors infiltrated in the past. In other parts of the settlements there is no fence, but only electronic measures such as motion detectors and security cameras.

Witnesses reported a brutal scene on Sunday: Dafna Meir was painting her house's doorframe when the terrorist approached her from behind and stuck his knife in her head. Meir's daughter Renana, the eldest of six children, was present and called for help, her screams helping to scare him off.

last March with the help of some of its allies. More than 7,500 Yemenis have so far been killed in more than nine months of incessant attacks, while millions more are reported to have been stranded across the country.

Responding to the Pak premier's remarks about the recent tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Rouhani said, "We call for the expansion of relations and do not welcome tension provided that the rights of Muslim people are respected."

Besides Pakistain, other countries, including Russia and China, have voiced readiness to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

It was unclear what the issue is, but the message read: "We're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

Terror Networks
Iranian supported groups active in Diyala
According to a local official, 56 armed Shiite factions in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, sow terror among the Sunni population yesterday, he told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Member of Diyala Provincial Council, Ali al-Daini, said that overlooking the daily crimes committed in the cities of the province, in addition to what has happened lately in Muqdadiyah where ten mosques were bombed, lead the representatives of the Sunni components in Diyala to seek to globally shed the lights on the suffering in order to end the extermination campaigns perpetrated by these armed militias, who, according to al-Daini, belong to a “third-party” against the Sunnis in Diyala.

Al-Daini added that these militias belong to influential political parties providing them with legal coverage in order for them to carry out their criminal acts freely. They do not comply with any orders given by Diyala security authorities, have no deterrent, and they have become very difficult to control. Those armed factions have not only penetrated the army, police, and the province, but also have given themselves the right to name the security leaders in Diyala according to how they see it fits.

On the other hand, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced yesterday that the concerned bodies have started gathering evidences on the three Americans and their interpreter, who were kidnapped in Baghdad by an armed group wearing military uniform and driving a Sport Utility Vehicle.

An official source confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the victims were kidnapped from an apartment in Baghdad’s southeastern Dora neighborhood.

The kidnapping of the Americans came at a time when the fate of more than 20 Qataris remains unknown, after being kidnapped by an armed group for more than a month now, in the desert western Iraq.

Prior to that incident, gunmen kidnapped Turkish workers and held them hostages for more than a week before releasing them.

China-Japan-Koreas
U.S. 7th Fleet Beefs Up Arsenal
The U.S. has deployed a state-of-the-art guided-missile destroyer and nuclear-powered attack submarine to the 7th Fleet based in Yokosuka, Japan. The 7th Fleet is part of the Pacific Fleet and currently the largest naval grouping the U.S. deploys overseas.

The deployments are believed to be a response to the growing North Korean nuclear and missile threat as well as China's moves to widen its naval reach.

A military source on Tuesday said the USS Barry, an 8,900 ton destroyer,
...or what used to be called a 'light cruiser'...
left the Norfolk naval base on the U.S. east coast on Dec. 12 and is en route to the 7th Fleet. It is armed with SM-3 and SM-6 guided missiles.

The USS Charlotte, a 6,900-ton nuclear-powered submarine, apparently arrived at Sasebo naval base in Japan on Jan. 5 and will be based there for the next six months. The Los Angeles-class fast-attack sub can launch four torpedoes, 12 Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Another nuclear-powered submarine, the 6,100-ton USS City of Corpus Christi, was deployed with the 7th Fleet last week.

The submarines would be capable of surreptitiously approaching the North Korean coast to launch precision strikes against nuclear and missile bases.

A Defense Ministry official here said Seoul and the U.S. are also discussing the deployment of B-52 long-range bombers and other strategic weapons to the Korean Peninsula in response to North Korea's nuclear test earlier this month.

The U.S. Navy also said an aircraft carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, will be deployed to the western Pacific for seven months.

Finding of Pathankot inquiry to be made public
[DAWN] Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that findings of the Pathankot airbase attack inquiries will be made public in a couple of days.
Jaish to be exonerated!
Addressing a presser here on Tuesday, he said military and civil agencies were working on the leads provided by India and a report would be compiled and shared with the media in a couple of days. He refused to speak further on the issue.
Masood Azhar to be vindicated!
Rana Sanaullah regretted that facts about the cases -- gang-rape of a teenage girl, cutting of hands of a labourer by a landlord, murder of a pregnant woman in a robbery incident and sewing of lips of a so-called victim of extortionists -- had been grossly overlooked by the electronic media.
But shucks, that sort of thing happens everywhere. It ain't just Pakistain. Mostly, maybe, but not all...
The stories were aired without confirming details with the authorities concerned, he said, adding that such reporting presented a negative image of the country to the world and did not serve the cause of justice.
"So, really, they shouldn't have been reported..."
Punjab IG Mushtaq Sukhera and investigation officers shared with journalists findings of the four cases.
...and I'm sure the journalists were totally convinced.

14 arrested, 4.3 tons of narcotics seized
RAWALPINDI: The Anti-Narcotics Force seized 4.3 tons of narcotics, arrested 14 suspected smugglers and impounded five vehicles in different parts of the country.

The seizure included seven kilograms of heroin intercepted by the Airport Security Force at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) while it was being smuggled to Saudi Arabia.

The suspect carrying heroin was identified as Mubashir Hussain, a resident of Khushab, who was to board a Jeddah-bound Oman Air flight at the BBIA. According to an ANF press release on Monday, Mubashir was taken into custody.

Bilal Ahmed, a resident of Charsadda, was detained after he reportedly confessed to having swallowed heroin-filled capsules. He intended to proceed for Abu Dhabi by a PIA flight.

During the eight operations carried out by the ANF in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Okara, Hyderabad and Qilla Abdullah, 3.075 tons of opium, 1.25 tons of Charas and 8 kilograms of heroin were seized.

The seized drug is estimated to be valued at Rs7.06 billion in the international market. Most of the seized drug was intended to be smuggled abroad.

During an intelligence-based action conducted near Bahria Town in Rawalpindi, four vehicles were intercepted and 1,250kg of Charas was recovered them. Initial reports said the drug was being sent to Karachi.

Eight suspects were held.

Muhammad Zahoor, a resident of Khushab, was arrested at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, after one kilogram of heroin was found in his trolley bag. He was attempting to fly for Jeddah.

A car was stopped near Thokar Niaz Baig in Lahore and 19kg of opium was recovered from its secret cavities. An occupant of the car, Rehmat Ullah, a resident of Bajuar Agency, was held.

An alleged drug supplier, Samundar Khan, a resident of Okara, was detained and 2.2 kilograms of Charas was found in his possession. He was arrested near Lahore-Multan Bypass, Okara.

Zeeshan was arrested during a raid conducted in Pathan Colony in Hyderabad and 3kg of Charas was recovered from his possession.

The ANF Quetta raided a desolate area in Qilla Abdullah district and seized 3,056 kilograms of opium. The site was being guarded by armed men who fled the scene taking advantage of darkness after an exchange of fire with the ANF personnel.

Cases were registered against the suspects and investigations were under way.

Hand-rolled solid hashish from the Himalayan foothills, esp. Charas in India. Very dark, almost black in colour with a high THC content and distinctive taste and aroma, it is a far superior smoke to the more popular hybrid Skunk varieties. Expensive and hard to come by compared to said skunk.
Known as 'the breath of Buddha'.

Free from sanctions, Iran moves assets worth billions of dollars
[IsraelTimes] Credit cards still don't work in Islamic Theocratic Republic, and likely won't in near future; funds expected to be transferred through Dubai

He did not say how much money was involved in the transfers, though he said the nuclear deal would give Tehran access to $32 billion in overseas assets and lower international currency transactions for the country by 15 percent.
Iran successfully transferred some of the billions of dollars' worth of frozen overseas assets following the implementation of the nuclear deal with world powers, the head of the country's central bank said Tuesday. But ordinary Iranians are still waiting to see how their daily lives will improve and how fast Iranian companies will gain access to financial markets worldwide.

Credit cards still don't work in the Islamic Theocratic Republic and its ATM machines remain separated from the rest of the world. That is not likely to change soon as many of the world's major financial services companies operate in the United States.

In a statement released on Tuesday, a group of four UN rights specialists said the current state of emergency in La Belle France and surveillance laws impose "excessive and disproportionate restrictions" on the basic rights of people.

The statement said the main concerns center on "the lack of clarity and precision of several provisions of the ... laws, related to the nature and scope of restrictions to the legitimate exercise of right to freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly and association and the right to privacy."

Security guard, wife gunned down in southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] A village security guard and his wife were gunned down at a rubber plantation in Yala province early on Monday morning.

Duty officer Chamnong Kaewpimol said Ma-ae Limada-i and his wife left their house to tap latex at a plantation near their village. When they had not returned home by 8 a.m., their relatives went to the plantation to fetch them as it was time for Ma-ae to go on security patrol at the village school. Instead they found both of them lying dead, having been shot many times each.

Police believed at least two attackers had hidden in the plantation. They blamed insurgents, pointing out that the couple's son is also a defense volunteer in the district.

Iraq
Americans missing in Baghdad kidnapped by Iran-backed militia
[Ynet] US sources say Washington has no reason to believe Tehran was involved in abduction, while Iraqi intelligence sources say three US citizens were kidnapped because they're American.

Three US citizens who disappeared last week in Baghdad were kidnapped and are being held by an Iranian-backed Shi'ite militia, two Iraqi intelligence and two US government sources said on Tuesday.

The US sources said Washington had no reason to believe Tehran was involved in the kidnapping and does not believe the trio are being held in Iran, which borders Iraq.

"They were kidnapped because they are Americans, not for personal or financial reasons," one of the Iraqi intelligence sources in Baghdad said.

Unknown gunnies seized the Americans on Friday from a private residence in the capital's southeastern Dora district, according to Iraqi officials.

The Iraqi government has struggled to rein in the Shi'ite militias, many of which fought the US military following the 2003 invasion and have previously been accused of killing and abducting American nationals.

No US citizens have been kidnapped in Iraq since US troops withdrew from the country in 2011.

Road Trip! Top ISIS leaders leave Iraq’s Nineveh, heading to Yemen and Libya
ERBIL – Amid intensifying airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition on the positions of jihadis in Iraq’s northwestern province of Nineveh, radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) has transferred a number of it top militant commanders to Libya and Yemen.

Speaking to ARA News, head of Nineveh Media Network Raafat al-Zarari said that a number of ISIS top commanders have left the group’s headquarters in Nineveh province over the past two weeks.

“More than 20 leading members of the group have headed to ISIS strongholds in Yemen and Libya,” said al-Zarari, quoting an ISIS official in Mosul city.

“The group is trying to avoid the loss of more prominent leaders in the raids of the western coalition,” the source reported. ISIS is also trying to strengthen its positions in Yemen and Libya.”

This comes after the U.S.-led coalition intensified its raids on the group’s positions across the region, killing a number of ISIS military commanders and security officials. The coalition has been targeting meeting points of influential militants of ISIS in northern Iraq for weeks.

On Monday, at least nine leading members of the extremist group were killed in a U.S. airstrike, including Hajim Ahmed al-Aswad –ISIS leader in Baaj, northern Iraqi.

Earlier on Thursday, a similar airstrike hit the group’s headquarters in Mosul city, killing more than 30 ISIS militants.

Turkey bombs Kurdish headquarters northern Syria
[ARA News] TEL ABYAD – Turkish army troops bombed on Tuesday headquarters of the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the Syrian border city of Tel Abyad, military sources reported.

Several artillery shells fired by the Turkish army hit the YPG headquarters in the border city of Tel Abyad.

At least two Kurdish fighters were injured and three armored vehicles were destroyed in the Turkish attack, the YPG leadership reported on Tuesday evening.

Tel Abyad city is located north of Raqqa province –the de facto capital of the Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group.

The city, which includes a crossing on Syria-Turkey border, was recaptured by the Kurdish forces in June, subsequent to fierce battles against ISIS militants. Since then, the Turkish border police and army troops have bombed the Kurdish headquarters for 23 times, according to Kurdish officials.

“Those attacks explain the Turkish support to ISIS terrorists,” YPG spokesman Habun Osman told ARA News in Tel Abyad.

“When the city was under ISIS control, the Turkish army has never launched any such operations. However, since the Kurdish forces liberated Tel Abyad, the Turkish army has repeatedly bombed the city and its suburb,” Osman said.

10 killed in suicide attack targeting security forces vehicle in Khyber
PESHAWAR: At least 10 people were killed and over 20 wounded when a bomb exploded near a security checkpost situated close to the Karkhano Market area here on Tuesday, rescue officials said.

Most of the dead include personnel from the Khyber Khasadar Force, rescue sources said. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Fazlullah group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast, which targeted a vehicle of the Khasadar Force, also killed the Assistant Line Officer Nawabshah and president of the Tribal Union of Journalists Mehmoob Shah.

"Although the exact nature of the blast is being ascertained, it appears to be a suicide attack," said political agent Khyber Agency Shahab Ali Shah.

He said 10 people were confirmed to have died in the blast that targeted Khasadar personnel.

The explosion occurred in Khyber Agency's Jamrud area, near Karkhano, said Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mubarak Zeb Khan. Karkhano is the gateway to Peshawar from the tribal belt.

According to initial reports, the exact nature of the blast could not yet be ascertained. However, eyewitnesses at the site claimed that the explosion was a suicide blast.

TV footage of the blast showed vehicles parked near the blast site caught fire after the explosion. The site was cordoned off.

An emergency was imposed at Hayatabad Medical Complex.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

AFP adds: Toheed Zulfiqar, a public relations officer at Hayatabad Medical Complex, said the dead included a seven-year-old and six of the injured were in serious condition.

Khyber is part of Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt on the Afghan border. The area is known to have been a militant stronghold in the past.

Pakistan suffers frequent bomb and suicide attacks blamed on extremist militant groups and troops have for years been fighting homegrown armed groups in the tribal belt.

Pakistani security forces have carried out ground offensives in Khyber Agency, particularly the Tirah Valley of Bara which borders Nazyan.

The forces cleared much of the Bara plain in Operation Khyber One launched in October 2014 while in a follow-on operation named Khyber-2 cleared the fierce Tirah terrain consisting of deep valleys and high mountains.

Zarb-i-Azb, a military offensive launched in North Waziristan in 2014 following a brazen militant attack on Karachi's international airport, is also currently in its last stages.

The number of attacks in Pakistan fell around 70 per cent in 2015, due to a combination of a military offensive against Taliban bases along the Afghan border and government initiatives to tackle militancy.

The members of the cell are of Kurdish and Arab nationality.

This is the second such plot against the mosque to be foiled by the Asayish.

In May 2014 the security forces detained a Farsi-speaking suspect carrying an explosive-filled backpack who confessed to have plans to blow it up among a crowd of mourners inside the Shiite Husseiniya.

Fateh warned in a press conference in Riyadh about the Madya town crisis in Syria being repeated in Taiz. A couple of days ago, Madaya shocked the world by revealing the horrific suffering of its citizens, due to the blockade inflicted by the regime, where even food was not allowed to reach in.

In sight of that, a militant organization in Aden has claimed the attack on the security director Colonel Shalal Ali Shayea’s house on Jan 17. The militants calling themselves “Aden’s Islamic Army” had threatened to continue carrying on their terrorist attacks.

On the militants announcing their attacks, Security Spokesman Ali Shayef al-Hariri said “the assassination groups are tracking down former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi leaderships, and are running their operations from the same room”.

“The purpose behind the assassinations is to deliver the idea that Aden is not safe anymore” he added.

On the other hand, Khaled Mahfouz Bahah, Yemeni Vice President and Prime Minister, said that “despite all the military gains that have been accomplished and the operations that have been completed on the case of freeing cities and governorates, they are still working on putting an end to the war and to enter a true and permanent peace stage”

“The international community and the United nations have to work hard on implementing all UN resolutions, and to compel the insurgent party to accept them and execute them to a notch” Mr. Bahah stated at the deliberations meeting held with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Abu Dhabi.

ISIS executes female for adultery
KOBANE – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) executed a woman in the northeastern Syrian city of Raqqa after accusing her of “committing adultery”, local sources reported on Tuesday. The victim was reportedly stoned to death in central Raqqa.

“The woman was a western jihadi in the ranks of ISIS. She was accused by the Sharia Court of committing adultery,” a local media activist told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“She was stoned to death in front of hundreds of people in Raqqa’s central square,” the source, who witnessed the execution, reported on Tuesday.

This is the first time that ISIS executes one of its own female jihadis on charges of adultery.

Africa Horn
UN refugee agency warns over perilous Horn of Africa sea crossings
Despite the ongoing conflict in Yemen, thousands of Ethiopians and Somalis are continuing to make a perilous sea crossing, which has already claimed at least three dozen lives this year, the UN refugee agency warned today.
So Yemen is still a garden spot, if you're from Æthiopia or Somalia...
Once again rather than still -- not so long ago it was the Yemenis fleeing south ahead of rampaging Houthis..
Latest data on sea arrivals shows that 92,446 people arrived in Yemen by boat in 2015, one of the highest annual totals recorded over the past decade. A full two thirds arrived since March 2015 when the conflict began.

With 95 deaths reported,
or 0.1%, a very small number, indeed...
2015 is the second deadliest year recorded to date. In view of this, and the loss of 36 lives in an incident on 8 January this year, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today reiterated its warning to people contemplating the crossing over the dangers of this journey.

“The overall figures are disturbing,” UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards told reporters at a news briefing in Geneva.

“People continue to arrive despite unprecedented escalated internal conflict in Yemen and tragically, more people continue to lose their lives trying to cross the sea in overcrowded, unseaworthy boats,” he added.

UNHCR began systematic recording of arrivals in Yemen in 2006. To date, only 2011 and 2012 have seen higher arrivals of Ethiopians and Somalis in Yemen than there were in 2015. Almost 90 per cent of last year’s arrivals were from Ethiopia.

UNHCR in Somalia and its partners have reportedly been working with the international community and Somali authorities to improve political, security and socio-economic conditions in Somalia. They have also been actively pursuing durable solutions for refugees, returnees and people who are internally displaced.

According to the agency, these efforts aim at providing an alternative to Somalis to undertaking perilous sea journeys to Yemen. The number of Somalis who made the journey to Yemen last year compares to a high of just over 33,000 in 2008.

Meanwhile, many new arrivals are reportedly misinformed about the severity of the conflict, believe that the situation has become relatively calm in some of the southern governorates, or are following rumours of improved access into neighbouring Gulf countries.

New arrivals have been described as facing movement restrictions in Yemen, and there have been reports of some being caught in the conflict and killed. There are now fewer income opportunities and available services, and organized gangs and smugglers continue to operate along the Red Sea coast.

“UNHCR and partners in the Horn of Africa counsel would-be crossers about the inherent dangers of the journey, the realities of the situation on the ground in Yemen and the asylum and assistance options available to them,” Mr. Edwards said.

Conflict continues to rage in the country and Yemenis are bearing the brunt with the UN estimating that over 2.5 million people are now internally displaced. Despite severely restricted humanitarian access and security constraints, UNHCR reached over 280,000 internally displaced Yemenis with essential household items and shelter material in 2015.

Yemen is also host to over 266,000 refugees, of which some 250,000 are Somali. Meanwhile, over 168,000 people have fled Yemen to neighbouring countries since March.

Army frees 20 kidnapped Egyptians near Jufra
Tripoli, 19 January 2016:

Twenty Egyptians abducted earlier this month near Jufra have been returned to Egypt after they were freed during an army operation.

Their repatriation in a Libyan oil services plane was a high profile affair, not least because Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was on the tarmac at Cairo airport today to greet them.

The hand-over was no less promoted in Libya with the men being interviewed on board the aircraft. They said that they were grateful that they had been freed from near Zillah by a Libyan army unit. However, they gave few details of the operation or their abduction. A Libyan officer claimed that the men had been seized by a gang which had close ties to IS.

Welcoming his countrymen home, Sisi said that he was grateful to Libya and to Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief General Khalifa Hafter for securing the men’s safe release.

It is thought that the Egyptians were discovered as army units moved towards Jufra seeking to secure the area in advance of an expected terrorist push into the oilfields.

India-Pakistan
Friday sermons
[DAWN] IN any Muslim society, the Friday sermon is a powerful platform from which to disseminate views. Most mosques are filled to capacity and preachers use the pulpit to communicate various concerns.

Sadly, in Pakistain, as well as other Muslim states, some holy mans have used the pulpit -- particularly during Friday prayers -- to promote obscurantism and militancy.

There are cases on record in Pakistain where the mosque loudspeaker has been misused to stir up sectarian hatred, demonise other religions and communities, and promote extremism. In view of these concerns, the Sindh government has reportedly decided to table a bill in the provincial assembly designed to regulate Friday sermons.

On Monday, the adviser to the Sindh chief minister on religious affairs said the move was aimed at promoting "sectarian harmony" and bringing an "end to hatred and extremism".

There can be little argument with the need to counter the poison of sectarianism and extremism in society. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
we must ask if government-issued sermons are the best way to approach the problem.

First, this method has been tried in other Muslim countries, with less than commendable results. For example, in Egypt, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the UAE, the state gives 'themes' and 'guidelines' to preachers to incorporate in Friday sermons.

This is primarily designed to exercise political control and ensure holy mans toe the official line. Further, for the military in Egypt and the royal family in Saudi Arabia, these measures are designed to stamp out criticism.

Yet despite the strict controls over religious activity in these states, they have failed to snuff out militancy. Second, we must ask whether the action suggested by Sindh would not breach the principle of freedom of expression -- although the state must ensure that preachers do not egg on the people to break the law.

Monitoring what preachers have to say in these tense times and punishing them for attempting to incite violence may be acceptable, but to assume that all of them will actually do so is unreasonable.

Finally, there is the issue of practicality. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of mosques in Sindh where the Friday sermon is delivered. Does the state have the wherewithal to bring all these under its control and issue them uniform sermons?

Rather than dictating the content of sermons, the state needs to keep an eye on what is being said by preachers. There must be simple guidelines: promotion of militancy and hate speech, rebellion against the state etc must be strictly off limits.

The state has a relatively effective intelligence apparatus at its disposal. This -- together with the involvement of communities and Learned Elders of Islam -- must be employed to keep an eye on rabble-rousing holy mans who misuse the pulpit to encourage militancy and fan hatred.

Citizens also have a responsibility to stop frequenting mosques which host hate-mongering holy mans.

More attacks
[DAWN] A MILITANT attack claimed by the banned TTP on the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
-Khyber Agency
... the place to go if you've got an Indiana Jones hat and whip. Chock full of high adventure and treacherous Pathans. You should really train up to it, though...
boundary, a separatist attack in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
-- the new year has continued with grim reminders of a troubling reality: the country still has a long way to go before victory can be declared in the fight against militancy.

While it was never expected that a year and a half of sustained counter-insurgency operations in Fata and intensive counterterrorism actions across the rest of Pakistain would eliminate militancy, the worry is that the state may have reached the point of diminishing returns.

Past counter-insurgency operations, like the several iterations in Khyber Agency, have yielded a worrying pattern.

While the military is able to reclaim territory and ensure turbans do not return en masse, the turbans adapt their tactics to new realities. The occasional suicide kaboom against security targets and frequent IED attacks have prevented the return of true normality.

Vastly improved as the situation on the ground may be, small-scale attacks continue with disturbing frequency. Meanwhile,
...back at the game, the Babe was wondering why the baseball kept getting bigger and bigger. Finally it hit him...
in Balochistan, two years of outreach by the previous civilian governments to separatist elements have not been able to offset the continuing realities of a province where politics and security have effectively been militarised.

The Bolan attack on FC personnel and the claim of responsibility by the BLA suggest that a decade of trying to militarily crush the separatists has not worked.

Could NAP be the answer to both problems in areas abutting Fata and in Balochistan? On paper, yes. But in reality, patchy implementation and the lack of meaningful coordination between the centre and the provinces and the civilian and military arms of the state continue to impede long-term success.

The attack on Khasadar personnel stationed at a Khyber-Peshawar check post embodies the dizzying array of challenges -- border control with Afghanistan; normalising Fata; and protecting the provinces.

Neither the success of Khyber I and Khyber II, nor high-level attempts to improve border management prevented the turbans from being able to kill personnel right on Peshawar's doorstep.

Bahraini court sentences teenage boy to 130 years in prison
[Iran Press TV] Ahmad al-Arab will be 147 years old after serving his jail term handed down by a Bahraini court.

The High Criminal Court in the capital Manama on Tuesday sentenced the 17-year-old to an additional 10 years in prison on charges of protesting against the ruling Al Khalifah royal family and charges of alleged terror acts, Arabic-language Manama Post online newspaper reported.

The court also ruled that Arab, who was incarcerated

The Tuesday ruling is the latest in a series of harsh punishments handed down to dissidents in Bahrain, a tiny Persian Gulf island nation that has seen years of anti-regime protests.

[DAWN] The other day, my brother had an animated argument with a relative of ours who thinks that Tashfeen Malik was innocent, and that she had been "set up" and just happened to be in the "wrong place at the wrong time".

Soon after this incident, I received a forwarded WhatsApp message that had a similar crux: There is a conspiracy afoot to target Muslims in the US.

Nine policemen die in attack in Urozgan
Nine policemen have embraced martyrdom in an insider attack in southern Afghanistan.

Dost Mohammad Nayab, spokeperson for the governor of Urozgan province says security agencies are looking for the policemen who went missing from the check post after the attack on Sunday evening.

He added that the four policemen missing have probably carried out the attack.

According to Nayab, ammunition and weapons are also missing from the check post and the suspects are believed to have taken them away.

This comes days after four policemen were martyred by their comrades inside a police check post in Urozgan’s neighboring Kandahar province which is also located in the southern part of the country.

This part of the country has been the scene of most of the insider attacks.

In the middle of 2014, policemen from inside a security post in Gezab District of Urozgan province had established links with Taliban which led to attack on the same post leaving 10 policemen martyred.

The agreement between two seemingly disparate media outfits was described to NPR by a person with direct involvement in the negotiations. A second person who was briefed on the deal by Univision executives also confirmed its broad strokes. The amount of money involved in the deal was not disclosed. NPR has also obtained a memo from the CEO of The Onion announcing the deal to staffers.

From July to September 2015, the British government authorized the sales under an export category which covers missiles, rockets and bombs via five separate licenses, The Guardian cited Saferworld and Amnesia Amnesty International as saying on Tuesday.

#2  Exports from the United States to the UK and British SA expanded considerably during the Boer War. The average annual value of these exports of about $577. million during 1899-1902 marked in increase of around $112. million over their average for 1899-1902. The most significant wartime expert were horses and mules. Over 100,000 of the former and over 80,000 of the latter were shipped from the U.S. to South Africa, about half of all the mules used in the British forces originated in America. Very large quantities of cartridges, hay, oats, and preserved meat were also sold. In addition, loans from US bankers underwrote approximately 20 percent of the cost of Britains war.

Keith Wilson, The International Impact of the Boer War, page 112. Published by Acumen 2001.

As an aside; these horses and mules did not come home. Domestic recovery from these exports lagged well into the WW1, placing our own soldiers lacking for horses, mules, and teams at the U.S. entry to the 'War to end all Wars.'

To get a feel for today's US dollar values, simply multiply 1899-1902 dollars by a conservative factor of 10. You'll be hitting the green with only a short putt remaining.

IS 'letter' slams beef ban, threatens Modi
[DAWN] NEW DELHI: An anonymous letter claimed to be from the Death Eater Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group has threatened to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar over the government's support for beef ban, Press Trust of India said on Tuesday.

It said Goa Police have circulated the letter to all cop shoppes in the state and handed over the case to the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS).

The postcard threat letter was received at the state secretariat last week following which Goa police swung into action, a senior police official said.

"All the agencies of state police are investigating this letter. We will soon be able to find the source of it," the police official said.

"ISIS was written at the bottom of the postcard," the official confirmed.

The letter expressed anger over ban on cow slaughter in the country, PTI said. The letter regardless of its veracity could give traction to Hindutva campaign in a clutch of state polls due in a next few months.

Pakistan test-fires air-launched cruise missile
[Iran Press TV] Pakistain successfully test-fires a locally developed "state-of-the-art" air-launched cruise missile.

"The state of the art Ra'ad ALCM (air-launched cruise missile) is equipped with highly advanced guidance and navigation system that ensures engagement of targets with pinpoint accuracy," the Pak military said in a statement on Tuesday.

The first of such missile was test-fired in August 2007.

The military said the newer version of the Ra'ad missile can reach targets distancing 350 kilometers (218 miles) from it launcher.

The missile is capable of hitting fixed enemy installations, such as radar posts, command nodes and stationary surface-to-air missile launchers, at stand-off range.

The missile can also be armed with a nuclear warhead.

The recent missile test is the latest in a series of tests conducted by Pakistain and its arch-rival India since both demonstrated their nuclear weapons capability in 1998.

On December 30, 2015, India test-fired its Barak-8 missile system. The long-range surface-to-air missile is reportedly capable of countering air attacks from long distances.

The system includes a radar for detection, tracking and missile guidance and was jointly developed by India and the Israeli regime.

12 die after consuming toxic liquor in Lahore
[DAWN] LAHORE: Twelve people died in the city on Monday and Tuesday after allegedly having consumed tainted liquor.

Six friends, who were celebrating an occasion, died in Youhanabad and the other six in Liaqatabad. The two areas are notorious for manufacturing and supplying spurious liquor.

The dear departed were identified as Gohar, Nabil, Boota, Samuel Viki, Shera and Qasim Masih in Youhanabad and Akram, Saleem, Shan, Sanni, Asim and Quma from Behar Colony and Gill Chowk of Liaqatabad.

Three died on Monday and the others on Tuesday. Two others were said to be in hospitals in a serious condition.

DIG operations Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn that according to initial inquiries the victims had consumed Kickapoo Joy Juice from Youhanabad.

But he confirmed only eight deaths -- two in Liaqatabad and six in Youhanabad.

He claimed that Qasim, who had supplied the liquor, was among the dead. His brother Asif ran the same business.

Canada frozen out of anti-Daesh coalition talks
[Iran Press TV] Canada has not been invited to a ministerial meeting in the French capital this week to discuss the battle against the Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
terror group.

The meeting, which is planned to be held in Gay Paree on Wednesday, will host defense ministers from the Netherlands, La Belle France, Australia, Germany, Italia and the UK.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter did not mention Ottawa last week in a speech in Kentucky when he announced plans for holding talks with defense ministers from countries that are playing a significant role in the so-called US-led coalition that is allegedly targeting positions of Daesh [Islamic State] in Iraq and Syria.

Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan, meanwhile, tried to play down the exclusion on Tuesday as he said the meeting would not be the only gathering over the issue.

The meeting comes as Washington has urged coalition members to contribute more to the anti-Daesh [Islamic State] fight in Iraq and Syria after the deadly terrorist attack in Gay Paree in November claimed by Daesh [Islamic State].

This is while Canada's new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to withdraw the country's six fighter jets from the mission but said Ottawa would increase military training.

Canada's opposition Conservative party has said in reaction to the exclusion that Ottawa "is deliberately being excluded because of this Liberal government's decision to withdraw our CF-18s from the mission against ISIS (Daesh [Islamic State])."
