Alaskan Earthquake today
Paul, are you OK?
Alaska hit with aftershock after 7.1-magnitude earthquake.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake
[7.1, 6.8 - what's the diff? /sarc]
struck early Sunday knocked items off shelves and walls in south-central Alaska and jolted the nerves of residents in this earthquake-prone region. But there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The earthquake struck about 1:30 a.m. Alaska time and was centered 53 miles west of Anchor Point in the Kenai Peninsula, which is about 160 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About two hours later, a magnitude-4.3 aftershock hit the Cook Inlet, the agency said.

#1  You may not see me, but Ize still here....

Earthquake happened at 0130 AST. No roar, just short period horizontal shaking. Went on for 16 seconds. Just went on and on. Checked all over the house. No damage. 2 cans of soup fell of the pantry.

Power ok. Gas ok. Son was driving to Walmart. Truck acted like it had a flat tire. They stopped and discovered the earthquake. Steady short period shaking went on for 16 seconds or so. He got to Walmart and quite a bit of things fell off shelves but not real bad.

Lots of aftershocks in the area.It was not a long period earthquake but a short period lateral movements. We live on a log house made with large spruce logs. It moved without creaking. Picture windows Undamaged. A bit of road cracks in kenai area. One subdivision evacuated because of gas leak. They are working on that. A number of power outages. Lots getting resolved. We never lost power. Here is an iphone screen shot of the mearthquake and some of its aftershocks.

Here is a screen shot of aftershocks and the main earthquake. There are about 3 or more aftershocks after the screen shot was taken.

All signs taken collectively, methinks Guam is overdue for a serious or big quake.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Beware of Hezbollah, prepare for Hamas
[Ynet] The real story of the current wave is the reawakening of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,' terrorist infrastructure in the West Bank to carry out attacks within the Green Line. The group feels that it has reached a sufficient level of preparedness to get through another war with Israel.

Institutionalized terrorism - namely shooting, bombs, boom-mobiles and suicide kabooms backed by terrorist organizations and supported by regimes such as Iran -- is returning to the West Bank and from there to within the Green Line. This is the true face of the wave of terror that is now being organized behind the scenes which threatens to take the place of the spontaneous and popular wave of lone murderers, the knife-wielders and vehicular attackers.

Senior defense officials have been closely following the decision Hamas's military leadership in Gazoo took in recent months to resume attacks in the West Bank and mainly inside the Green Line, even at the price of total confrontation with Israel.

According to the same sources, Hamas, a year and a half after Operation Protective Edge, feels that it has reached a sufficient level of preparedness to get through another war against the IDF. For Israel, this is a strategic warning: in the coming year it is likely to find itself in another war in the Gazoo Strip.

Hezbollah, as of now, is a marginal factor in terms of institutionalized terror infrastructure in the West Bank. The discovery of the Hezbollah terrorist cell in Tulkarm is indicative of the terrorist organization's efforts to get back into the picture regarding the Paleostinian conflict, just as it did during the second intifada when approximately 70 percent of Fatah cells operating against Israel did so under the auspices of Nasrallah. For him, the Paleostinian front is the primary one from which he can operate against Israel without igniting the northern border. But the depth of his penetration on the ground is still far from his capabilities.

The real story here is Hamas. A few weeks ago the Shin Bet revealed Hamas's organization in the West Bank, which included explosives laboratories and the preparation of a jacket wallah to carry out an attack in Jerusalem. Hamas' military wing in Gazoo, which commanded the cell, operated under the assumption that Israel cannot show restraint in the wake of a major attack in the heart of the capital. It believes that Israel would act aggressively in the West Bank -- including damaging the Paleostinian Authority - and simultaneously carry out widespread reprisals in Gazoo.

The warning signs have been clear to Israel for several months now: Israel believes that Hamas is allowing itself to carry out large-scale attacks in the West Bank as it has completed basic preparation for delivering a surprise attack which it failed to do just before Operation Protective Edge. It is not impossible that it will penetrate into Israel, simultaneously and via a number of points -- from the air, sea and tunnels - accompanied by a mortar fire and a massive blitz of rockets to cause the maximum amount of deaths.

Hamas has also developed a suitable ideology that would include an opening attack that would pummel and shock Israel and serve as a kind of Paleostinian Dire Revenge for Israel's opening attack of Operation Pillar of Defense which killed dozens of police in Gazoo.

It seems that at least part of the process of rebuilding the Gazoo Strip has been completed: booby-trapped tunnels penetrating inside the Green Line have apparently been newly dug, including, if past experience is any indication, several openings for each tunnel. In addition, their special forces ("hanuchba") and divers continue their intensive training, their UAV strength was rebuilt and their rocket arsenal has been partially restocked.
.
The cell that planned an attack in Jerusalem was indeed captured - but is not the only one. The commander of the PA's security services, General Faraj, told American media that his men incarcerated
You have the right to remain silent...
about 300 Hamas members recently.

At the beginning of the current terror wave, four months ago, Hamas in the Gazoo Strip and Hamas headquarters in Istanbul urged Paleostinians to commit violent attacks and praised the stabbers and car rammers. Hamas, at the time, encouraged the wave of terror - but had not yet crossed the line by activating cells that it set up in the West Bank out of fear of Israeli retaliation.

Hamas's strategy was to try to destabilize Abbas's regime by creating unrest in the Paleostinian street. On the other hand, Israel believed that Hamas was busy strengthening itself, was in financial distress due to the loss of support from Iran and had received a serious blow from the Egyptians who wiped out a large part of their smuggling tunnels. In addition, it still believed that Hamas still didn't have the ability nor the interest to risk a confrontation with the IDF.

Israel changed this estimation when it became clear that Hamas was instructing its people in the West Bank to once again carry out terrorist attacks inside the Green Line. And indeed, the cells were reawakened and several explosives laboratories were discovered. Simultaneously, money began to pour into those cells, messengers came from and went to the West Bank, and today it is clear that Hamas - led by Mohammed Deif -- is changing direction and raising the stakes against Israel.

Sexual Assaults on Students: Hamburg School Under Police Protection
The article is in German. Here's a link to the school's message to the students confirming the reported incidents.
Summary:

The school is a Hamburg's vocational school W4 attended by 2000 mostly female students. The school trains apprentices in fields related to medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

For some time students have been accosted and sometimes sexually harassed being on their way from the school to a nearby S-Bahn train station.

The perps are described as men of Middle Eastern or North African appearance speaking little to no German.

So far only eight cases are confirmed by the police. However this is likely to be only the tip of the iceberg.

One young woman describes being circled by men who had followed her to the train station. The men pressed her against a wall while other men stood nearby and were laughing.

According to the police "additional similar incidents were reported."

The police will show more presence in the vicinity of the school. Also the police will investigate whether the men come from a central refugee reception center on the same street.
"We must investigate every possibility, however remote!"

Great News -€“ Reparations demand causing Dem fissure
[Legal Insurrection] Author Ta-Nehisi Coates
...son of a former Black Panther by one of his four wives (some of whom appear to be baby mamas -- Wikipedia is vague about this). Mr. Coates is a one-note writer about the institutional racism which led him to a senior editorship at The Atlantic, a visiting professorship at MIT, and status as a public intellectual. He would no doubt want us to know that he is an atheist and a feminist, though whether the latter is related to growing up in a close-knit family with five half-siblings and their mothers is not to be asked...
is hot, hot, hot in progressive circles.

His demand for Reparations published in The Atlantic pushed him into the stratosphere. But it was an empty, amateurish effort, as I wrote at the time, The dead-end Case for Reparations:

Coates never gives the answer as to who gets what and how.

And that's ultimately the problem with reparations arguments that are not based upon the people causing the harm paying the people directly harmed by specific conduct soon after the conduct is remedied.

If you can't answer the question of why a Vietnamese boat person has to pay reparations for the conduct of white plantation owners more than a century earlier, then you can't make the argument.

If you can't answer the question of why two successful black doctors living in a fashionable suburb should get reparations paid for by the white children of Appalachia, then you can't make the argument.

Short answer: these guys are semi literate script kiddies of the improvised weapons engineering department. They were given a recipe for rocket design that actually sorta kinda works, and they will follow that recipe no matter what. Innovation is strongly discouraged.

Furthermore- cultural experience with bomb making (the ever popular red wire- blue wire oops thing) gives additional incentive to not tamper with a system that sorta works and does not kill the launch team every 3rd attempt.

Sewer pipe sugar rockets sorta kinda work. They seem to not blow up too often on launch. As for aim and impact point, Inshallah.

The Grand Turk
Biden says PKK, ISIS are both terrorist groups
This is very odd, considering yesterday's report that the U.S. is taking over a Syrian airfield near the Turkish border to use supporting YPG efforts against ISIS there. But perhaps the vice president was just politely not contradicting his host.
[Rudaw] US Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
said Saturday that the Kurdistan Workers´ Party or PKK is a "terrorist group" and there is "no difference" between them and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Biden's remarks came during a joint news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Istanbul.

"They are simply terrorist groups and here in Turkey, they threaten and do harm and are of severe consequence to the interest of the people of Turkey and we do recognize that," he said, quoted by the local news agency Anadolu.

The PKK has been fighting in Turkey during three decades for more rights for the Kurdish community, while the Islamic State and al-Nusra are fighting in Syria and Iraq and are affiliated to bad boy Islamic views.

Biden was quoted by the agency saying that he believed that the vast majority of Kurds wanted to live in peace but that the PKK had shown no desire or inclination to do so.

Reiterating that Ankara was a "strategic partner" of the US, Biden said Turkey has been taking "very important" steps to improve security in its border where ISIS is reigning terror.

Biden said Turkey and the United States were coordinating ever more precisely on what is a "shared mission on the extermination of ISIL"(or ISIS).

Biden also was quoted by the newspaper Hurriyet Daily News as saying that the United States and Turkey were prepared for a military solution in Syria against ISIS if a political settlement was not possible.

"We do know it would better if we can reach a political solution but we are prepared..., if that's not possible, to have a military solution to this operation and taking out Daesh [Islamic State]," Biden said, using the Arabic term for ISIS.

Davutoglu also said terrorism did not threaten only one country, rather it threatened all neighbouring countries.

"Whichever ethnicity terrorism is coming from, it is a humanitarian crime. We do not see any difference between PKK, al-Nusra, DHKP-C (the Revolutionary People´s Liberation Party-Front), Daesh [Islamic State]," said Davutoglu.

Davutoglu added both the US and Turkey were sensitive to the fight against all terror organizations.

"Turkey sees three threats in Syria: One is the regime, another is Daesh [Islamic State], and third is the YPG (the armed Kurdish forces of the Democratic Union Party or PYD in northern Syria)," said Davutoglu, adding that the YPG (Kurdish People's Protection Units) was part of the terrorist organization PKK.

The PYD is the Syrian affiliate of the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU and the US.

Davutoglu also said the PKK presence in Iraq required that Turkey bring the fight to the PKK and Daesh [Islamic State] in the region.

Biden also talked with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
, in a meeting was closed to press.

Europe
France's Calais port shuts after migrants jump on ferry
[AlAhram] Northern La Belle France's port of Calais was shut down Saturday after dozens of migrants boarded a moored ferry in a desperate bid to reach Britannia, officials said.

The boarding -- a rare occurrence in the heavily guarded port -- came after some 2,000 people protested nearby over living conditions in a notoriously squalid camp known as "the Jungle".

"A group of 500 people forced their way through police lines and headed to the port, and 150 people were able to get into the fenced-off area. Of these, a group of some 50 managed to board a ferry," the prefecture, representing the French state, official told AFP.

Operations at Calais, La Belle France's main passenger port, were halted, it said. By early Saturday evening, police were still struggling to bring the migrants off the "Spirit of Britannia" ferry, operated by P&O. An AFP news hound said the migrants were blocking the gangway, preventing police from getting onboard.

The company said the ship had just crossed from Dover, on the English side of the Channel, and "a few trucks" were still onboard but there were no passengers when the boarding occurred.

"The proximity of the camp and the unprecedented number of migrants make it impossible to secure the (port) infrastructure, however much the state invests," port director Jean-Marc Puissesseau told AFP, demanding that the camp be moved elsewhere.

Earlier, some 2,000 protesters had gathered to demand "dignified living conditions" for the estimated 4,000 migrants living in the camp, most of them from North Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan. Among the protesters were people from Britannia, La Belle France, Belgium and Italia.

"We are here in solidarity and to denounce the inaction of the French state, which does not have the will to ensure a better life for the refugees," said Rino, a 22-year-old student from Italia who had come to Calais by bus.

"Refugees welcome", "Calais, Lesbos, Lampedusa, our borders kill", "Open the borders, let them in," read the protesters' banners.

"No Jungle, no Jungle!" cried migrants who joined in the protests.

"Here, we live worse than animals," said Wali from Afghanistan.

Baraa, a Syrian refugee, said he was "happy" to see "all these people here to support us."

"Their presence will make things move, and put pressure on the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
to make things change here in Calais," he added.

British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn meanwhile visited Saturday the neighbouring town of Dunkirk, which is home to another camp named the Grande Synthe. Corbyn, a veteran left-wing campaigner before becoming Labour leader, said he wanted to "understand the nature of the refugee crisis that's facing the whole of Europe".

He said that Britannia should do more to address the problem.

"We have got people here who have been here for months, if not longer than that, with no proper education, no access to doctors, no access to dentists, limited access to food -- in very cold, very wet conditions," Corbyn said. "These conditions are a disgrace anywhere. We as human beings have to reach out to fellow human beings."

Mastermind of Pathankot, Jamrud, Quetta, University incidents same: Liaqat Baloch
[NATION.PK] Secretary General, Jamaat e Islami, Liaqat Baloch, has said that Pakistan was under attack from the enemy and the master mind of the incidents at Pathankot, Jamrud, Quetta, and the Bacha Khan University was the same.

He was talking to the media after addressing a workers convention at Rawalpindi.

The JI central leader said that the solution of the Kashmir issue was the need of the hour. He said it was in Indian’s own interest to stop terrorist activities and allow the people of the region to live in peace.

He counseled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif not to expect much from New Delhi and instead evolve a national Kashmir policy through consensus that could help restore peace in the region.

Liaqat Baloch said the basic aim of politics and democracy was to serve the masses through a judicious distribution of the natural resources. However, he said, that corruption and plunder of the public money by the ruling elite in the country had pushed the society to the lowest level.

He said that in such a situation, the JI was trying to bring up honest and dedicated leadership through training programs in order to provide true leadership to the masses.

Islamic State said holed up in Syria’s biggest dam
[IsraelTimes] Wall Street Journal says group using facility for 'high-value' prisoners, brass hats, in belief that flood fears will deter US strikes

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
is using the massive Tabqa Dam in Syria as a holding center for "high-value" prisoners and to shelter its bigwigs, in the belief that the US will not bomb the site for fear of causing devastating flooding, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The dam is located just 25 miles from Raqqa, IS's center of operations in Syria, and has been in the group's hands since 2013. It is heavily guarded by foreign-born fighters and checkpoints, and access is strictly limited, the newspaper said Friday, quoting anti-Islamic State activists in Syria.

The report quotes Middle East expert Prof. Ariel Ahram of Virginia Tech as saying that a rupture in the dam would result in large swathes of Iraq being flooded and "no electricity for all of eastern Syria." He warned that it would be "an ecological disaster for Iraq and a humanitarian catastrophe for Syria."

According to sources quoted in the report, the US is aware of the IS presence at the dam, and fears for its maintenance and use as a base of operations. Some Middle East analysts and American officials have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that the jihadists could blow up the dam should they begin to sense their power slipping.

"Of course you worry," Mideast and water resources specialist Aaron Wolf of Oregon State University tells the Journal. "These aren't the people you want controlling basically the arteries of the region."

This is not the first time that the Islamic State has used dams as safe havens, in the expectation that its enemies will be deterred from attacking it at such facilities, the report says. The group used the djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Dam in Iraq for similar purposes, before it was driven out in 2014 by Iraqi and Kurdish troops backed by the US. It also tried to seize the Haditha Dam in western Iraq, so far unsuccessfully, due to the presence of Iraqi troops and Sunni tribes, also backed by US warplanes.

The Journal says, however, the US recognizes that ousting IS from Tabqa would be a more complex task, due to the lack of ground troops in the area.
A nice little project for the Spetznaz in support of their client, who won't want his people drowned.

The next dam down the river is Mosul's. It would definitely go with all of lake Assad rushing into it. The combined chain reaction would scour a path from Mosul to the Persian Gulf - right through Anbar province. It would pretty much be the end of the Sunni area of Iraq. ISIS would have no heartland left in Syria or Iraq. Muslims all over the planet would despise the Islamist for the massive loss of Sunni life..

ISIS extremists use Syrian civilians as human shields against Russian strikes
ALEPPO – Amid intensified Russian airstrikes in northern Syria, extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) imposed a siege on the cities of Manbij and Jarablus in an attempt to prevent civilians from leaving their homes.

The radical group on Saturday installed dozens of security checkpoints in the vicinity of the two cities in northern Aleppo province, arresting dozens of civilians who were trying to escape the mounting Russia airstrikes.

“ISIS militants prevent the people of Manbij and Jarablus from leaving their hometowns despite the fierce airstrikes by Russian warplanes,” civil rights activist Issa al-Raei told ARA News in Manbij.

Over 1000 civilians have been killed in Syria under Russian airstrikes since September, according to local documentation centers.

“The ISIS terror group is using those civilians as human shields against the Russian airstrikes,” al-Raei said.

Speaking to ARA News in Jarablus, Syrian journalist Heytham Bakkar said that ISIS militants have imposed a curfew in the city after installing several checkpoints in its suburbs.

“ISIS is aware that the Russian airstrikes mainly hit residential neighborhoods in Jarablus and other areas held by the group in Syria. Obliging people to stay home waiting for their death under those raids literally means using civilians as human shields, which is a war crime,” Bakkar said.

He appealed to the international community to intervene and stop “the bloodshed of innocent people at the hands of Assad regime, Russia and ISIS”.

NATO to continue co-op with Georgia
NATO will continue cooperation with Georgia, Alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the results of the meeting with the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili told reporters in Davos, TASS reported.

During the meeting with Stoltenberg, issues on the country's integration into NATO and the continuation of reforms were discussed, according to the Georgia’s delegation members in Davos.

Georgia actively cooperates with NATO since the late 1990s. In November 2002, President Eduard Shevardnadze has officially declared at the NATO summit in Prague that Georgia wants to become a member of the Alliance.

The new government that came to power after the victory of the "Georgian Dream" coalition in the parliamentary elections in Oct. 2012, stated that Tbilisi will continue the course of integration into NATO.

Tehran eyes to outbid Riyadh as Middle East’s major oil refiner
Iran plans to launch 16 oil refining projects, worth 33 billion euros, eyeing to surpass Saudi Arabia as the biggest oil refiner in the Middle East, according to an Iranian news agency report. Current, Iran’s oil refining capacity is 1.85 million barrels per day (mbpd).

The country plans to build 12 medium and large crude oil and gas condensate refining units, implement fuel oil output reduction projects at Bandar Abbas and Abadan refineries, revamp Isfahan and Abadan refineries, and boost crude oil and oil products transfer capacity, said the Mehr news agency Jan. 22. Once the projects come on stream, Iran’s oil refining capacity will increase by 1.29 mbpd and reach 3.1 mbpd.

Saudi Arabia’s oil refining capacity has been declining over the past five years from 2.8 mbpd in 2010 to around 2.1 mbpd in 2015.
Another reason for the U.S. to continue working to reduce its dependence on the oil ticks...

Furthermore, three in four Americans now say that the “American Dream” — broadly, the notion that through hard work and determination every American can have a successful life — is suffering, according to the 7th Annual American Values Survey unveiled last year at the Aspen Ideas Festival.

What’s more, 69% say the obstacles to realizing the dream are “more severe today than ever” — and note that a decline in work ethic is the primary hurdle to Dream achievement. The poll of more than 2,300 Americans was conducted by Burson-Marsteller and market research firm Penn Schoen Berland.

Palestinian killed by own bomb in attack on police in East Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Explosive device apparently detonated when man attempted to use it against Border Police forces in Abu Dis; troops unharmed
How many virgins do you get for killing only yourself?
A Paleostinian terrorist was killed while attempting to attack Israeli Border Police in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Abu Dis on Saturday night, when the bomb he was carrying apparently went kaboom! prematurely.

Initial reports indicated that there were no casualties among the Israeli forces.

Earlier Saturday a Border Police officer rubbed out a Paleostinian teenager who tried to stab him as he guarded the entrance to a West Bank settlement.

Roqaya Abu-Eid, 13, approached the entrance to Anatot, near Jerusalem, brandishing a knife, and attempted to stab the policeman as he went to speak to her. There were no Israeli injuries in the incident.

Israel Police said later that an initial investigation showed the girl, from the nearby village of Anata, had fought with her parents and stormed out the family home with the knife, declaring that she wanted to die.

Jordanian forces kill 12 at Syria border, seize narcotics
[Iran Press TV] Jordanian border guards have killed 12 alleged infiltrators attempting to enter the kingdom from neighboring Syria and injured several more in an armed border battle with 36 people, the army said.

An official with the country's armed forces general command stated on Saturday that the fighting took place when the group, some of them armed, tried to cross into Jordan from Syria, adding that Jordanian forces also confiscated over two million pills of narcotics during the face-off.
ISIS manufactures narcotics. The pills are handed out like candy to their Lions of Islam -- to make them fearless -- but they make enough for a steady export business as well.
The official did not mention any casualties on the side of the Jordanian guards.

According to the kingdom's military website, Jordan regularly intercepts smugglers attempting to cross into the country, noting that following the Saturday incident, several of the infiltrators fled back into Syria.

The armed battle was reportedly the deadliest such incident on Jordan-Syria border in recent memory.

Officials, however, did not elaborate on the exact location of the shooting battle.

This is while Jordan's eastern border remains a key crossing route for Syrian refugees fleeing the foreign-backed conflict in their native country with nearly 17,000 people stranded in the area awaiting admittance.

Dozens of ISIS fighters killed in Clashes with Kurds near Mosul
QAMISHLI – Subsequent to fierce clashes with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, at least 20 militant fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed and more than 25 others were wounded near Mosul city in Iraq’s northwestern province of Nineveh, the Peshmerga said in a statement on Saturday.

“Daesh terrorists attacked our (Peshmerga) headquarters in Makhmur district southeast of Mosul, using car bombs and mortar shells,” the Kurdish leadership said in a statement, using another acronym for ISIS.

“But our forces repelled the attack subsequent to fierce clashes,” it added.

“At least 20 terrorists were killed and 28 more wounded in the clashes, before the group withdrew from the area towards its strongholds in Mosul.”

The Kurdish Peshmerga troops were able to repel the ISIS attack with support from the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes.

Backed by the western coalition’s air cover, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi army troops have recently intensified anti-ISIS operations in the vicinity of Mosul, aiming at liberating the city from the fist of the jihadis.

Taliban wants to be removed from UN blacklist before new peace talks
[Iran Press TV] The Taliban Lion of Islam group says it wants to be removed from the blacklist of the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
as a condition for rejoining peace talks for an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.

"We conveyed them to first remove us from the ‎blacklist of the United Nations and allow us to freely travel around the world and then we can think about holding peace talks," said an unidentified Taliban member during unofficial talks with activists and former Afghan officials in the Qatar

. That has prompted renewed efforts in the country and by neighbors to revive stalled negotiations between the Lion of Islam group and the Afghan government.

Pakistain mediated the first round of talks in the summer of 2015, but a planned second meeting was cancelled after news broke that Taliban's founder and long-time leader Mullah Omar

The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
had died two years ago.

Many suspect that Taliban could reappear on the negotiating table as factional infighting and leadership division has deepened in the group since the death of Omar.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a front man for the Taliban, said Saturday that representatives of the group had attended the unofficial talks in Doha to express the views of the group on how the situation in the country should be handled.

"The meeting is providing us an opportunity to express our views about the future of Afghanistan," said Mujahid, without elaborating on the condition set by other senior members about removal of Taliban from the UN blacklist.

Officials from former Afghan administrations who attended the talks said Taliban has yet to make a concrete demand.

"So far they have not proposed any concrete ideas about how to move forward. Hopefully by tomorrow we will know if they want peace and if so what their conditions are," said Anwar Ahady, a former minister of finance.

Ras Lanuf tank fires almost extinguished
Benghazi -- After more than 48 hours, exhausted firefighters hugged each other today after they had extinguished the last of the major blazes in the Ras Lanuf tank farm. Even so, a pipeline and a nearby tank were still on fire.

At times during the inferno, the firemen had acted with almost lunatic bravery. Footage was posted of one man who climbed a ladder put up against a burning oil tank, to turn off a valve that was allowing oil to spray on to a nearby fire. The individual, who was not wearing a helmet nor apparently any of the fire crews’ protective gear, worked at the valve with a large spanner which reduced the emission from the tank to a trickle. Then he finished the task by hammering the valve completely shut with the spanner.

NOC in Tripoli has said that 90 percent of the fires are now out. It has taken over two days for the crews to achieve this following Thursday’s missile and artillery attack on the export terminal by IS forces.

The firefighters’ task was made the more difficult by their initial inability to move through the ground fighting to reach the blaze. The flames were therefore able to take hold on at least three of the storage tanks which in turn ignited two others.

NOC said that the Petroleum Facilities Guard had now secured the entire area. It was sending teams to assess the full extent of the destruction. It is believed that some three million of barrels of crude were in the tank farm when IS attacked.

At the height of the blaze a massive plume of black smoke stretched north-east across the sea to the coastline below Benghazi. Tripoli NOC chief Mustafa Sanalla described the conflagration as an environmental disaster.

Who wants peace in Pakistan?
[DAWN] IN his final State of the Union address, US President B.O. predicted a decade of instability in Afghanistan and Pakistain. Af-Pak was always a bad construct for policy formulation. There are obvious security linkages between Afghanistan and Pakistain. But the circumstances and prospects of the two countries are significantly different.

Predicting continued instability in Afghanistan is an easy call. The Kabul

government is beset by internal division and an insurgency that has momentum.
...thanks to the love-filled generals in Pakistan's ISI...
Given the preconditions posed by Kabul, the recently created quadrilateral forum will find it difficult to get the Afghan Taliban to the table let alone secure an agreement for peace. A turbulent and fractured Afghanistan is the most likely prospect for the foreseeable future.

Dutch-Somali man masterminded Mogadishu beach bombing
A Somali man with a Dutch passport
I'm guessing he's more 'Somali' than he is 'Dutch'...
is the mastermind behind the terrorist attack at a popular beach in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Thursday. The man, Ismail Muse Ahmed Guled was arrested at the Mogadishu airport, according to freelance war reporter Harald Doornbos, Omroep Brabant reports. At least 19 people were killed in about 7 hours of attacks.

Guled is also believed to have been involved in an attack on the Central Hotel in the same city last year, as well as in an attack in Dijbouti in 2014 in which six Dutch soldiers were injured.

Thursday’s attack involved a total of eight attackers. Six were shot, one committed suicide and one was arrested. That is believed to be Guled. The attack was claimed by terrorist group al-Shabaab. It started with a car bomb at a restaurant around sunset, followed by a second explosion and then hours of random gunfire.

AD reports that Guled arrived in the Netherlands in 1992. He lived in Den Helder and Tilburg. He married a Somali-Dutch girl and joined Al-Qaeda. According to Doornbos, his wife blew herself up in Somali last year.
So who recruited who?

Shaving off 13,000 beards, shutting shops selling hijab: Tajikistan 'fights radicalisation'
[DAWN] TAJIKISTAN: As part of an "anti-radicalisation campaign", police in the Khatlon region reportedly shaved the beards of 13,000 men and shut down 160 shops selling the hijab, reported BBC earlier this week.

According to the report, hundreds of thousands of men have been tossed in the slammer
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
in recent years for adopting mannerisms "alien and inconsistent with Tajik" culture -- maintaining a beard is considered among the gravest of these offences.

The BBC interviewed nine men who said they were tossed into the calaboose in the street and forcibly taken to the police department for an arrest, or to a barber shop to be shaved.

Women are given their own prescriptions: their dress, the government has stated, must be in traditional Tajik colours. Black, the colour most commonly associated with the burqa, is automatically outlawed in these circumstances.

"Even in mourning, Tajik women [should] wear white, not black," President Emomali Rakhmon has warned the Tajiks.

The fear of 'alien values'
President Emomali Rahmon has been ruling the country since 1994 and is soon expected to approve a legislation that will promote secular values, which includes banning Arabic-sounding and "foreign" names officially.

With sections of the Middle East and Asia falling to extremism and militancy, the Central Asian states increasingly fear the spread of radicalisation.

Estimates suggest that between 1,500 and 4,000 Central Asians could have joined different Lion of Islam groups in Syria, as of June 2015.

In response, countries like Tajikistan have launched official campaigns and taken measures that discourage Islamic cultural practices. In September last year, Tajikistan's Supreme Court banned the Islamic Renaissance Party, which is the only registered Islamic political party in the Muslim-majority country, Al Jazeera reported.

President Rakhmon has also warned Tajiks: "Don't worship alien values, don't follow alien culture. Wear clothes of traditional colours and cut, not black."

The fight for secular values
The fight to maintain secular values has affected men, women and kiddies alike. The state has placed a ban on hijabs in all educational institutions, and state institutions follow the same rule.

Parents are discouraged from giving their children Arabic names, and are pressured to opt for more traditional and familiar Tajik names.

According to the BBC report, Tajik police said they shut down 160 shops that sold the hijab, and convinced over 1,500 women to stop wearing the Islamic code of dress.

In the south-west region of Khathlon, police reported that law enforcement agencies have successfully convinced over 1500 women to stop wearing headscarves.

Even though Tajikistan is a 99% Muslim, atheism was encouraged during 70 years of Soviet rule.

'Do not shave'
One man, Djovid Akramov, said he was outside his house with his seven-year-old son when the police intercepted him and rushed him to a station to remove his beard.

"They called me a Salafist, a radical, a public enemy," Djovid told the BBC. "And then two of them held my arms while another one shaved half of my beard."

Shaving off men's beards is not an unprecedented response to battling extremism, since growing a beard is a traditional Islamic practice.

The Taliban have particularly warned men against shaving their beards. In Pakistain, a barber shop in Buner was found with a 'do not shave' warning written across its front window, reportedly by Lion of Islams.

Upper Dir Barbers in the town of Darora were also warned to stop shaving beards, the residents told Dawn in 2008. A threatening leaflet was circulated by a group of the Taliban, after which barbers stopped trimming and shaving beards completely.

Air force attacks IS in Ben Jawad
Benghazi -- The Libyan Air Force said that it today carried out air strikes against IS vehicles in Ben Jawad, the town seized by the terrorists last week and used as a jumping-off point for the devastating attacks on Sidra and Ras Lanuf.

Air Force spokesman Nasser Al-Hassi said that the raids by Mig-21s, he did not state how many, had caused the terrorists heavy losses in both lives and materiel.

The targets, he said, included vehicles mounting medium and heavy weapons. There is no photographic corroboration of the damage that the fighters inflicted and IS, as is usual, have not commented on their losses.

My vision for a culture of life
By Donald J. Trump

[WashingtonExaminer] Let me be clear — I am pro-life. I support that position with exceptions allowed for rape, incest or the life of the mother being at risk. I did not always hold this position, but I had a significant personal experience that brought the precious gift of life into perspective for me. My story is well documented, so I will not retell it here. However, what I will do with the remaining space is express my feelings about life, and the culture of life, as we just marked the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

I build things. There is a process involved in building things. We tap into a lot of disciplines with engineering being one of the most important. The rules for putting structures together are as strict as are the rules of physics. These rules have stood the test of time and have become the path to putting together structures that endure and are beautiful. America, when it is at its best, follows a set of rules that have worked since our Founding. One of those rules is that we, as Americans, revere life and have done so since our Founders made it the first, and most important, of our "unalienable" rights.

Over time, our culture of life in this country has started sliding toward a culture of death. Perhaps the most significant piece of evidence to support this assertion is that since Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Count 43 years ago, over 50 million Americans never had the chance to enjoy the opportunities offered by this country. They never had the chance to become doctors, musicians, farmers, teachers, husbands, fathers, sons or daughters. They never had the chance to enrich the culture of this nation or to bring their skills, lives, loves or passions into the fabric of this country. They are missing, and they are missed.

The Supreme Court in 1973 based its decision on imagining rights and liberties in the Constitution that are nowhere to be found. Even if we take the court at its word, that abortion is a matter of privacy, we should then extend the argument to the logical conclusion that private funds, then, should subsidize this choice rather than the half billion dollars given to abortion providers every year by Congress. Public funding of abortion providers is an insult to people of conscience at the least and an affront to good governance at best.

If using taxpayer money to facilitate our slide to a culture of death were not enough, the 1973 decision became a landmark decision demonstrating the utter contempt the court had for federalism and the 10th Amendment. Roe v. Wade gave the court an excuse to dismantle the decisions of state legislatures and the votes of the people. This is a pattern that the court has repeated over and over again since that decision. Roe v. Wade became yet another incidence of disconnect between the people and their government.

We are in the middle of a presidential political cycle and votes will be cast in just days. The citizens of this nation will have the chance to vote for candidates who are aligned with their individual worldviews. It is my hope that they will choose the builder, the man who has the ability to imagine the greatness of this nation. The next president must follow those principles that work best and that reinforce the reverence Americans hold for life. A culture of life is too important to let slip away for convenience or political correctness. It is by preserving our culture of life that we will Make America Great Again.

Donald J. Trump is a candidate for president of the United States.

Houthis accused of kidnapping journalists
Yemen's loyalist militia on Friday accused rebels of responsibility for the kidnapping of two Al Jazeera journalists and their driver who went missing in the flashpoint central city of Taez.

Al Jazeera correspondent Hamdi Al Bokari, his colleague Abdulaziz Al Sabri and driver Munir Al Subaie have been missing since Monday night.

The Doha-based news channel has said Bokari, who was covering the conflict between rebels and forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, had apparently been kidnapped.

The Popular Resistance militia charged that Houthi rebels and their allies were behind the kidnapping of the three men.

Their car was found abandoned near the central Hurriya square, an area under the control of loyalists, it said.

The city of Taez is held by loyalists of Yemen's internationally recognised government.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Friday called for the immediate release of Bokari and his companions.

Biden: U.S. Prepared to Use Military Force in Syria
The U.S. is prepared to use military force to end a civil war in Syria if a political solution can’t be reached, U.S. General Sheriff Vice President Joe Biden said during a visit to Turkey.

A non-military resolution to Syria’s conflict “would be better,” but force could be used for “taking out” Islamic State if necessary, Biden said Saturday following meetings with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.

“We do know that it would be better if we could reach a political solution,” Biden said. “We are prepared if that’s not possible to have a military solution to this operation.”

The U.S. has been carrying out “precision strikes” on Islamic State in the Middle East based on intelligence, and last year President Barack Obama criticized Republicans who urged carpet bombing of the group’s strongholds.

A Biden official traveling with the vice president told reporters the comments represented no change in U.S. policy, according to a press pool report that didn’t name the official.
"Someone get a statement out to the press while the nurse gets him sedated!"
Biden said both the U.S. and Turkey are “determined” to reach a resolution in Syria, and both nations agree that Islamic State, the autonomy-seeking Kurdish group known as PKK and the affiliated al-Nusra Front.
Agree on what? Erdogan has a well-known opinion of the PKK, and a well-recognized tolerance for the ISIS...
The vice president also said he discussed with Turkey’s leaders how the two governments can improve support of local Sunni Arab forces, working to cut off the remaining 60 miles of Turkish border.
Assuming that's what the Turks want, which they don't.
The Washington Post has a different view:
Syrian Kurds are snag in U.S.-Turkey strategy against Islamic State

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and the United States continued Saturday to disagree about the status of Syrian Kurdish forces who have become a key part of the U.S. strategy to defeat the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Syria.
That means the Kurds are gonna take it in the national shortskis.
...on at least both sides of the Syria-Turkey border. Bombing runs in Syria, destroying the cities in order to save them in Turkey. Probably more bombing runs in Iraq, as well.
In statements after two hours of meeting here, Vice President Biden and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu praised the U.S.-Turkish alliance. The partnership is "enduring, it's rooted in history, it's in the hearts of our people," Biden said. "Turkey is a strategic partner."

But while saying ties with the United States were strong, Davutoglu repeatedly referred to the Syrian group -- called the People's Protection Units and known by its Arabic initials as the YPG -- as a terrorist organization on par with the Islamic State and as a component part of Turkey's own Kurdish Death Eaters, who have long used violence to try to carve out their own state inside the Turkish border.

UN Says Access Difficult to Besieged Yemeni City of Taiz
[ABCNEWS.GO] The United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
humanitarian coordinator for Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
said Saturday they are seeking ways to ensure unconditional access to Taiz, a city of about 25,000 residents besieged by Iranian catspaws who control the capital and have been fighting an internationally recognized government.
It's under siege. Maybe that's why it's so hard to get in or out.
"Only a few shops are open. Food and other basic goods needed to survive are in short supply. Basic services are scarce, including access to water and fuel," UN humanitarian coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said in Sanaa, the capital, following a visit to Taiz.

"Humanitarian access to three districts within the city has been difficult for many months," while hospitals haven't been spared the violence, said McGoldrick.

Taiz has been besieged for months by Iranian catspaws known as Houthis who have been indiscriminately shelling the war-devastated city and blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to residents and aid groups.

India-Pakistan
Talks after Pathankot
[DAWN] AFTER days of official comment and frenzied speculation, the India-Pakistain relationship appears to have gone quiet once again, at least officially and publicly. That is an unwelcome lapse into old habits. There are two things that the two countries need immediately: one, an expedited investigation into the full contours of the Pathankot air force base attack; and two, the initiation of the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue. Three weeks from the Pathankot attack, India ought to have completed its initial investigations and Pakistain ought to have done the same. This, then, is the time for the two countries to try and jointly piece together the details of the attack -- and find the collaborators who exist on both sides of the border. In Pakistain, the symbolic closure of some centres and madressahs affiliated with the outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
is simply not enough. Had the Pathankot attackers been able to kill or injure more individuals or had aircraft been damaged, the crisis would have been of far greater magnitude. It is evident that spectacular carnage was the myrmidons' real intention. For precisely that reason, the Pathankot investigations, both in India and Pakistain, should not be allowed to drift towards inconclusiveness.

As for the CBD, what is the point to dialogue when an episode like Pathankot cannot be dealt with inside the proposed framework? The broadened CBD, which has added two issues to the eight baskets in the Composite Dialogue, covers counterterrorism, peace and security and even confidence-building measures. The Pathankot investigations and India-Pakistain cooperation regarding them could surely fit into one of those categories. Initiating the CBD would also set an important precedent. If dialogue is to be uninterruptible, it must be seen to be uninterruptible. The national security adviser channel or secret communications between the Pak establishment and Indian intelligence cannot and should not become a replacement for true dialogue. The very premise of the CBD is that Pakistain and India have disputes and issues to resolve that, no matter how important and urgent the terrorism challenge may be, go far beyond one, near-term incident.

Just as it is necessary to carry the Pathankot investigations to a swift conclusion and initiate the CBD, inside Pakistain there should be urgent attention paid to spoilers who have emerged in recent days. Syed Salahuddin, the head of the United Jihad Council, for example, appears determined to make a comeback in the public eye. This week, he condemned the partial crackdown on JeM -- a condemnation that followed the UJC's claim of responsibility for the Pathankot attack. What is the state doing to address the trouble that Syed Salahuddin is seeking to stir up? Surely, the time has come when public assertions of responsibility for terrorist attacks in another country can no longer be tolerated. Dialogue between Pakistain and India should be able to proceed in a climate free of intimidation and fear.

Russia-Syria step-up ISIS bombing in Deir Ezzor, Raqqa
[Rudaw] Intensified air bombing against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) was reported in Deir Ezzor and Raqqa in Syria over the past 24 hours, as Russia announced it had killed 60 gunnies in air strikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that warplanes bombed two towns near the contested scenic provincial capital of Deir Ezzor, where a Syrian Army outpost has stood in the way of ISIS taking over that city for well over a year now.

SOHR reported the corpse count from the strikes at 44. In ISIS´ Raqqa stronghold, air strikes reportedly killed 32. It is unclear how many of these were ISIS casualties.

But the state-run Russia Today said that Russian air raids on Deir Ezzor had killed 60 ISIS Lion of Islams.

Since it intervened in Syria four months ago Russia and its long-time Syrian ally have been accused of not targeting ISIS but instead hitting other gangs fighting the Syrian regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

'Russian raids' kill 33 civilians ahead of Syria talks

[DAWN] Suspected Russian raids killed 33 civilians in war-ravaged eastern Syria on Saturday, amid reports US forces are building up an air base to bolster their fight against Lions of Islam further north.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog backed into the corner and showed its teeth. And what big teeth they were!...
senior diplomats scrambled to resolve the key question of who will represent Syria's opposition at crucial talks next week aimed at ending the nearly-five year war.

In eastern Syria, the 33 non-combatants were killed in air strikes suspected to have been carried out by Russian warplanes on a myrmidon-held village.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nine children and two women were among the dead in Khasham, which is controlled by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group.

The village is in Syria's oil-rich Deir Ezzor province, where IS has sought to advance in recent days despite a barrage of Russian and Syrian government air strikes.

The week-long IS offensive on the bustling provincial capital has left nearly 500 people dead and sparked fears of mass killings among the 200,000 people still living there.

In Syria, it is under fire by the government and Damascus's long-time ally Russia, as well as a US-led coalition also battling the Lions of Islam in Iraq.

To bolster their fight against the group, US special forces deployed in Syria are building up an airbase in the northeast, sources told AFP on Saturday.

President Ghani urged the US defense chief to further equip the Afghan Air Force and Afghan National Army (ANA) forces, specifically the 205th Atul Corps in a bid to eliminate the threat of the ISIS loyalists in the country.

He said the menace of terrorism is not only threatening Afghanistan but is a threat to the region and the world and to fight terror will require short term, mid term and long term cooperation.

The remarks by President Ghani comes as there have been growing concerns regarding the growing activities of the loyalists of the terror group as they have been trying to expand foothold in the country.

Home Front: Culture Wars
This Week in Books 1/24/2016
Paul Revere's Ride
David Hackett Fischer
Oxford University Press, 1994

As to his style, Mr. Fischer begins his book with an accounting of the cover art which would make Sister Wendy take notice.

I have to admit, when I opened this book I had no expectations. Now I wish I had read Albion's Seed beforehand. Not that I know what it covers, but because the author is so good at story writing and the topic's place in time that I know I missed something. Concerning: (page XIV, introduction)

But one genre is strangely missing from this list. Professional historians have shown so little interest in the subject that in two centuries no scholar has published a full-scale history of Paul Revere's ride. During the 1970's, the event disappeared so completely from academic scholarship that several leading college textbooks in American history made no reference to it at all. One of them could barely bring itself to mention the battles of Lexington and Concord.

The cause of the neglect is complex. One factor is a mutual antipathy that has long existed between professional history and popular memory. another of more recent vintage is a broad prejudice in American universities against patriotic events of every kind, especially since the troubled years of Vietnam and Watergate. A third or fourth are the popular movements called multiculturalism and political correctness. As this volume goes to press, the only creature less fashionable in academe than the stereotypical "dead white male," is a dead white male on horseback.

Having read Washington's Crossing I thought this book would have an interesting tale of Paul Revere and his associates.

Furthermore, Mr. Fischer dispels many myths and legends, noting and essentially beginning with "The British are coming!" As the colonials still considered themselves British, it was more likely, "The Regulars are coming!" as a call to alert. With much detail about their departure plan and tactics he notes the flower of the British: (page 238)

Behind him came three regiments of British infantry. Pride of the place went to the 4th (King's Own) Foot, proudly bearing the monarch's cipher on its color, and the dark blue facings of a Royal regiment on its faded red tunics. Nobody trifled with the King's Own. Even their nickname in the army connoted high respect. They were called the Lions after their badge, which was the lion rampant of England. That emblem had been awarded for gallantry by William III and was proudly embroidered on all four corners of their regimental colors. In 1773, an inspector described the King's Own as "a very fine body of men, well dressed and fit." As it marched from Boston, an expert observer would have noticed that it was also exceptionally well equipped. The 4th had recently been rearmed with a new musket, two inches shorter and two pounds lighter than the previous issue, and so closely bored to the caliber of its ammunition that the regiment was among the first in Gage's army to be issued steel ramrods.

Mr. Fischer recounts the battles of Lexington and Concord in an easy yet thorough way, both readable and detailed enough to give the sense of gunpowder and sweat. He follows up well: (Page 283)

Lord Hugh Percy also fought at New York, with the same skill and courage that he had shown on the retreat from Lexington. He was instrumental in the capture of Fort Washington, the largest surrender of American troops up to that moment, and was promoted to Lieutenant General. But he grew so disgusted with the conduct of the war that he resigned his command and returned to Britain in 1777. Later he inherited the title of Duke of Northumberland. In his mature years he became one of the richest men in England, and also (it was said) one of the most irascible. His ill-temper was attributed to gout; perhaps his experiences in America played a role. Percy dies on July 10, 1817.

Mr. Fischer draws a direct correlation between the experiences of the militia during the French and Indian War and the readiness, drills, and morale of those who fought at Lexington and Concord and eventually the War for Independence. It was the French and Indian War which put combatants against civil targets, a raid on commerce, which spurred the already embedded concept of a right to self defense. As it was said last week, "When seconds count, the king's soldiers are weeks/months away."

It is a good read, and what a reading person wants: raw with a gulp of water or steeped and seasoned, imagining a new recruit to the King's Own, foot on the chair, comrades at arms pounding the table.

Europe
New Year assaults, robberies in 12 German states': Report
[AlAhram] German police have found that the wave of sexual assaults and robberies on New Year's eve did not only happen in Cologne
...a lovely city in Germany. They invented perfume there...
but that similar incidents also took place in 12 of Germany's regional states, local media reported Saturday.

Hundreds of women have reported they were groped and robbed by mainly North African suspects outside Cologne's main train station where crowds had gathered to ring in the New Year.

Similar assaults, however, also took place that night in 12 of Germany's 16 regional states, according to the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the NDR and WDR television stations, citing a report by German judicial police (BKA).

Contacted by AFP the BKA had no immediate comment on the report.

"The phenomenon of sexual violence, in part linked with robberies, is much greater than we previously thought," the newspaper said on its website, adding that the regional states were affected to different degrees.

The most affected state was North Rhine-Westphalia, which includes the city of Cologne, where 1,000 complaints have been filed, followed by Hamburg with 200.

In other states the number of reported incidents was lower: Hesse (31 complaints); Bavaria (27), Baden-Wurtlemberg (25), Bremen (11) and Berlin (6).

One case was reported in Lower-Saxony, Brandeburg, Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

Like Cologne the target of the assaults were women in almost all cases. According to witnesses, the aggressors were often young men of foreign origin, between 17 and 30 years old.

The assaults in Cologne, which police have blamed on young men from North Africa and other Arab countries, have ignited a fierce debate over Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's policy of welcoming refugees to Germany which received one million asylum seekers in 2015.

On Saturday, Aydan Ozoguz, who handles integration issues for the government, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the New Year's assaults had "poisoned" the atmosphere in Germany. "Several hundred criminals do not represent a million refugees," she said.
And the fact that we only have the reports from one night does not represent how many have been involved in such behaviour before or since, Frau Ozoguz.

#2  "Several hundred criminals do not represent a million refugees"

The do represent the Muslim refugees because what they did wasn't illegal according to Islamic law.

Sharia sez that women appearing in public wearing perfume are criminals. Sharia sez that Dhimmis using force against Muslims are criminals, even when acting in self-defense.

The Muslims tried to take what is theirs by right and what was denied them illegally.

This is a clash of cultures, value systems and laws.

Importing Muslims means importing Islam's bloody borders.

Pro tip to National Review: Start buying more ammo
By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

I won't vote for Trump because of his "bombastic style."

I won't vote if Trump becomes the Republican nominee.

I won't vote unless Cruz becomes the candidate.

Have you heard that recently? I know I have often, by folks I would consider far more erudite than myself.

From my own perspective, let me start out by saying that, considering the list of writers and pundits who combined their talents into one tight, lovable ball of garbage, you get the idea that no matter who leads the next group that goes to Washington D.C, individual rights under the Constitution will be ever more and ever further diminished. Despite the past 85 years of ever expanding government and offers of more from both sides, this group seems convinced that the idea of anyone other than Trump becoming president is a clear call for conservative principles in the selection of a presidential candidate.

Worse than that, the collection of writers are considered to be among the most intelligent, insightful beings on the right. Yet they have missed the point of opposing the evil that the left represents so completely, you have to wonder if they don't quietly question the provenance of their very paychecks and compensation.

This opposition comes from a magazine that hounded a distinguished conservative writer from their ranks for something he said as a quip, a bad habit that was carefully nursed from birth and now has morphed into electoral political opposition. I have been told that the solution to objectionable speech is more speech, but with the crowd at National Review, the solution to objectionable speech is to depose whoever said whatever they don't like.

The people at National Review don't want to hear it. They just want their way. They sound just like their opposition, silver spoons, juice boxes and all. This ain't no way to run a movement.

Conservatism didn't lose in 2008 and 2012 exclusively. It has been an ongoing, steady beat of brutal beatings, first at the hands of a hostile press establishment, then at the hands of social media egged on by the providers of the technology, and finally, the end goal and the golden dream of fascists everywhere, at the hands and offices of government itself. High technology delivered the means of mass destruction, but it took the government to deliver the actual blow.

There is no need to oppose Trump, or Cruz, or Bush. The left now can use the government itself to kill advocacy groups, destroy their opponents and destroy free speech, a final goal so complete, I am truly surprised that this government under Barak Obama has not been considered more than just a few runaway bureaucrats.

So, when a brash, wealthy, New York liberal, private businessman starts talking about all the obvious, but unspoken ills that have been visited on people, by people who love government and all the power that is associated with that love, using the raw power of government, the obvious answer is to say you won't support him? There seems to be a disconnect here, but it is all visited to one side. The left doesn't have any problems now that the government can be used to destroy whatever is left of Constitutional rights, all on the Holy Altar of tax collecting, all neatly endorsed by the United State Supreme Court, you know, the "Rule of Law", the entity that until recently conservatives have supported unflinchingly and without reservation.

You can kiss the Heller decision goodbye, all because the courts have seen to it that no matter what, resources gets transferred to government and to bureaucrats, and to hell what the Constitution says, or even means. Think it won't happen? It is happening now with the gun permits. Just wait until a challenge comes which juxtaposes Heller against the government's absolute and inviolable right, as granted by the courts, to tax and to spend. Guess which will go and which will stay?

What will the writers at National Review say when thousands of people get their gun permits stripped from them for failing to pay their heath care tax, or from a retroactive change in the tax laws, and this after 10 or 20 years of bragging about their "right" to carry a concealed firearm as granted by a then benevolent government?

And with the group at National Review in the ten or so years that that will happen, their only opposition being to the way, and the manner in which their rights have been taken from them; Nothing said about the ills; Only about the way those ills have come.

For a long time I have heard about how this election will overturn Washington, we will sweep this evil, or that evil from Washington DC. On and on and on, and all the time the power, size and scope of government has increased steadily, ever more encroaching on individuals rights and lives. So when Donald Trump says he will make America great again, I can easily assume I can start counting my dollar bills, lovingly and admiringly, because I will never see them again. They will be like children who are all grown up, ready to go out into the world and be used to further destroy my fundamental rights to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and all those who threaten it, like an ever expanding government.

It brings a tear to my eye. Really.

That is what Donald Trump will lead to. And the main basis of opposition from the writers at National Review?

The Donald said something they didn't like.

#2  Well-said, Chris.

When it comes to this Presidential election, any Republican is better than any Democrat.

I'm old enough to remember when (some) Democrats loved America and had actually read (and would follow) the Constitution. :-(

#3  The Donald said something they didn't like.

Perhaps, there's a different take from the NR commentary. It's not what Trump has said it's what he's not saying - a call for limited goverment. For instance, on gun control he's never explained why in 2000 he promoted a ban on "assault weapons" and waiting period for purchase. There's pleanty of people that have outgrown their liberal leanings but The Donald has yet to explain his pivot. Absent that it's completly reasonable to not only question but to outright doubt his sincerity.
