The Elephant in the Room

Donald Trump is succeeding, we're told, because he appeals to angry voters -- but that's obvious; tell me more. Why are they angry, and how does he appeal to them? In 2016, Americans want to vote for a person and not a white paper. If you care about America's fate under Obama, naturally you are angry; voters should distrust a candidate who is not angry.

But there's more to it than mere anger. Chris Christie was angry, and he's gone. Trump has hit on important issues -- immigration, the economy, appeasement unlimited -- in ways that appeal to voters emotionally. There's nothing wrong with that; I trust someone who feels what I feel more than a person who merely thinks what I think. But though Rubio and Cruz are plainly capable of connecting with voters emotionally, Trump is way ahead -- for many reasons, but the most important is obvious and virtually ignored.

Political correctness. Trump hasn't made it a campaign theme exactly, but he mentions it often with angry disgust. Reporters, pundits, and the other candidates treat it as a sideshow, a handy way for Trump (King Kong Jr.) to smack down the pitiful airplanes that attack him as he bestrides his mighty tower, roaring. But the analysts have it exactly backward. Political correctness is the biggest issue facing America today. Even Trump has just barely faced up to it. The ironic name disguises the real nature of this force, which ought to be called invasive leftism or thought-police liberalism or metastasized progressivism. The old-time American mainstream, working- and middle-class white males and their families, is mad as hell about political correctness and the havoc it has wreaked for 40 years -- havoc made worse by the flat refusal of most serious Republicans to confront it. Republicans rarely even acknowledge its existence as the open wound it really is; a wound that will fester forever until someone has the nerve to heal it -- or the patient succumbs. To watch young minorities protest their maltreatment on fancy campuses when your own working life has seen, from the very start, relentless discrimination in favor of minorities--such events can make people a little testy.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Hamas says it captured Israeli tunnel monitoring vehicle
Hamas has captured an Israeli vehicle for monitoring tunnels under the border with Gaza, a top official from the Islamist group said on Friday.

Ismail Haniya, Hamas's leader in Gaza, said that 10 days ago the group's armed wing "discovered an underground vehicle on which were installed cameras and sensors to monitor tunnels and fighters."

Speaking in a sermon at Muslim prayers in the Shati refugee camp where he lives, Haniya said the find gave the movement an "advantage."

The destruction of tunnels under its border with Gaza was one of Israel's main objectives in a summer 2014 offensive on the territory.

The tunnels can be used to store weapons, while fighters have also used them to conduct raids into Israel.

In recent weeks, Israelis living near the border have reported hearing drilling, raising fears of new tunnels.

Haniya said despite fresh tensions there was "no war against Gaza looming on the horizon".

"The occupation is embarking on defensive manoeuvres and it is proof that (Israel) is not preparing for war."

He said there had been "a lot of progress on the issue of the port of Gaza" in recent talks between Israel and Turkey on mending ties between the two governments.

A senior Turkish official said on Tuesday that Ankara was "close" to an agreement on normalising relations, nearly six years after they were downgraded following a deadly Israeli raid on a Turkish flotilla headed to Gaza.

Ankara has always posed three conditions for normalisation -- a public apology for the raid, financial compensation for the victims and the lifting of Israel's decade-old Gaza blockade.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
How ISIS Takes Revenge on Russia
CHERKESSK, Russia -- On a recent morning, armed and uniformed policemen patrolled nearly every block in downtown Cherkessk, the capital of Karachay-Cherkessia, one of six republics in Russia's Northern Caucasus. Every so often, they had to break their stride to get around the garbage that covered the dirt sidewalks, and the water-filled potholes in the broken roads that reflected the sky.

Local police and federal anti-terrorism special units have reenforced their positions all across the region, as ISIS-connected terrorist groups have targeted federal highways, attacked and murdered officials, killed tourists--and claimed credit for all these atrocities.

The Northern Caucasus, with 9.7 million people, could be famous for its spectacular natural beauty, snow-peaked mountains, and health spas built around mineral springs. Instead, it's known for its shaky peace and, recently, as a focus for activity by the so-called Islamic State, which is not only recruiting from the local population, but exacting retribution for what happens on the faraway battlefields of Syria.

For many young men here, ISIS has offered what seems a romantic action-oriented life, however brief, instead of the mire of poverty and unemployment that surrounds them here.

An old woman in house slippers and green socks is sweeping the street outside an old mosque by the city's canal; she asks that "the dirt and poverty" in her city not be photographed. "Such shame," she says.

Last year it seemed that Russian authorities had begun to win the ongoing war on terror. The number of attacks dropped by almost 50 percent, from 525 terrorist attacks in 2014 to 258 in 2015.

But last June, Abu Muhammad Al-Adnani, one of the Islamic State's senior leaders, declared the existence of a new Wilayat Qawqaz, or Caucasus governorate, and violence increased again as ISIS ordered suicide bombings and murders.

On Monday, the neighboring republic of Dagestan was shaken by a terrorist attack, the third one in the last six weeks. A suicide bomber drove a car stuffed with explosives into a police checkpoint in Dzhimikent, killing two policemen and injuring more than ten. ISIS took responsibility, Russian news agencies reported, saying the operation was carried out by a group under the command of a man called Abedtin Khamagomedov.

The same group claimed responsibility for the attack on guards and tourists at Naryn-Kala Fortress in Derbent, a UNESCO world heritage site, in late December. The attackers fired from three positions, killing one person and injuring 11 people. Police later discovered 67 bullet casings, Interfax reported.

And it seems that Northern Caucasus is not the only ISIS target in Russia. On Feb. 7 the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported the arrests of ISIS insurgents in Ekaterinburg, near the Ural mountains. The report said that the group's leader came to Russia from Turkey.

The FSB report also said that the ISIS underground group was preparing attacks on metros and shopping centers in Russia's biggest cities: Moscow, St.Petersburg and Ekaterinburg, according to a report by Meduza media.

As the authorities try to keep ahead of the killing, they may well be provoking more.

"One of the major factors causing the increase of violence is the reaction Muslims have to authorities closing down Salafi mosques, and the security services putting pressure on potential ISIS recruiters and helpers," says Gregory Shvedov, the editor-in-chief of Caucasian Knot, a Website specializing in regional news.

Already, armed men are a regular feature of life here. When militiamen with Kalashnikovs in hand walked into a cafe and ordered food, a young man named Aslan shrugged and told me, "Weapons in public places are something we see here, it is nothing special, like unemployment."

Options for the future are limited. A college graduate could not make more than $350 a month, mostly as a salesman. "Most of us try to move to Sochi, Stavropol or Krasnodar, where life is more stable, where the average salary would double to $650," Aslan said.

Others choose to go to Syria to join ISIS. Local law enforcements talks of over 3,000 ISIS members from Northern Caucasus fighting in the Middle East.

In a recent special operation in Karachay-Cherkessia, police killed three young men and arrested six more suspects for pledging allegiance to ISIS on line. "These men made a video tape of their oath to ISIS and sent it to Syria by WhatsApp messenger," Andrei Przhezdomsky from the National Anti-Terrorist Committee told reporters.

Earlier this month, a local court in Cherkessk arrested six young Muslims, who were suspected in preparing series of terrorist attacks in the republic. The Federal Investigative Committee reported that the group had connections with Syria, and that the arrested men were awaiting direct orders to conduct terrorist attacks in the republic.

According to an analysis published by Caucasus Knot, 6,074 people have died from terrorist attacks since 2010.

Ministry of Caucasus officials told The Daily Beast that Moscow dreamed it could turn North Caucasus into a tourist center one day. "We have negotiated with a number of investors from Italy and France, but all the projects are slowed down by the instability," one official said. "The number of people willing to go on vacation to the regions known for terror attacks is decreasing." (One could hardly be surprised.) "And that leaves businessmen investing in tourism face to face with their creditors."

So the spiral of terror and violence continues, and ISIS, under pressure in Syria and Iraq, has its own plans for the future in Wilayat Qawqaz.

Watch These American Tanks Slip and Slide Through the Norwegian Snow
Something to consider when General Winter comes to town.
U.S. Marine Corps tankers, currently in Norway for a NATO exercise, are learning techniques in driving in snow and icy conditions. The result is like something out of a very slidey drift racing video--that is, one featuring 70 ton race cars.

In the video, U.S. Marine M1A1 Abrams crews from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade practice turns that briefly leave their tanks out of control. The video also shows Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks of the Norwegian Army's Telemark battalion take the same course--evidently with a lot more practice.

One curious detail: the Abrams tank doesn't have any crew markings. Marine Corps tanks often have individual names stenciled on the barrel, names such as "Nacho Libre", "Dante's Inferno", and so on. That's because these are not the tankers' regular vehicles. These are tanks that have been sitting dormant in caves just south of the Arctic Circle, ready to roll.

Unknown to many, the Marine Corps stores equipment for an entire combat brigade in enormous caves in Norway. The program, called Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway, can fully equip a 15,000 man marine brigade, complete with 30 days' worth of ammunition and supplies. The goal is to assist Norway--which shares a 121 mile border with Russia--in case of attack.

M1A1 Abrams tanks, LAV-25 reconnaissance vehicles, Humvees and equipment of all kinds are stored in temperature-controlled caves, guarded and maintained by the Norwegian Army. US Marines are occasionally airlifted to Norway, draw gear identical to what was left stateside, and participate in military exercises.

And, it turns out, drift 70 ton tanks.

#4  Newtonian Physics, upfront and personal.

I. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

II. The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors (as indicated by their symbols being displayed in slant bold font); in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector.

III. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian government not given GPS data of clinic hit by strike
Doctors Without Borders said on Thursday that it took the wrenching decision not to formally inform Syria's government or its Russian allies about the location of some medical facilities such as the one hit by a deadly airstrike this week, amid concerns that doing so could open them up to targeting amid recent violence that has killed many civilians.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Because nobody likes you except the Taliban and ISIS.
So they made a decision and they can't live it with the consequences. Ah, I get it, they must be progressives...
The charity, also known by its French acronym MSF, says repeated attacks against health facilities during Syria's five-year civil war have led medical staffers to ask the group not to provide the GPS coordinates of some sites. This was the case of the makeshift clinic run by the charity in the Syrian town of Maaret al-Numan, which was hit four times in attacks on Monday, killing at least 25 people.

"Deliberate attacks against civilian infrastructures, including hospitals struggling to provide life-saving assistance are routine," MSF International President Joanne Liu told reporters in Geneva. "Health care in Syria is in the crosshair of bombs and missiles. It has collapsed. Let me be clear: Attacks on civilians and hospitals must stop. The normalization of such attacks is intolerable."

Liu's comments came as the U.N. made new aid deliveries to five besieged towns and said it plans additional deliveries, hopefully to the 4.6 million Syrians living in hard-to-reach and besieged areas, as called for in an agreement by 18 key nations in Munich on Feb. 12. That agreement also called for a cessation of hostilities within a week -- which would mean Thursday -- but there was no sign of a halt to fighting.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wants to see movement toward a de-escalation of violence and a cessation of hostilities as soon as possible.
Don't forget to wait for the enemy's input before you make a decision.
"What we've seen recently goes against that," he said. "We see very worrying escalation of military developments."

MSF's Liu said the group has no certainty about who was responsible for the strikes, but the "probability" was that Syrian or Russian air power was to blame. She said MSF's policy of not informing Syrian or Russian officials about the location of health facilities has become a "hot topic" inside the organization.
And 'hot' just went nuclear, I'll bet.
Also Thursday, the head of a U.N. task force on humanitarian aid for Syria said that 114 "big trucks" delivered life-saving supplies over the past 24 hours for 80,000 people in five besieged areas of the country. Jan Egeland called the deliveries a "first step" by the task force that was set up last week following a meeting of world and regional powers known as the International Syria Support Group. He said the supplies are enough to last about a month.

Egeland said the aim is to reach other main besieged areas, or areas surrounded by government or opposition forces, and "hard-to-reach" places within the next week. He also expressed hopes for progress in air-dropping aid to Deir Ezzor, a city which is currently under siege by the extremist Islamic State group.

The U.N. special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said from Damascus that the International Syria Support Group is "very encouraged by the fact" that the 114 trucks were able to reach 82,000 people in need and appealed for more such action.

"I must say that this was a difficult test for the United Nations to show they could do it, for the government and for the armed opposition," de Mistura was quoted as saying in a statement. "Of course, we should go beyond that, we should go far beyond that in order to be able to reach everyone in Syria who is either besieged or in need of being assisted."

He added that the idea of air drops in areas besieged by the Islamic State group and other factions has become a concrete proposal that the U.N. wants to work on.

In New York, U.N. spokesman Dujarric told reporters Thursday that the World Food Program is considering using a Russian civilian contractor that has been used in the past in South Sudan, and that the contractor would be expected to seek instructions only from the United Nations.

Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Vladimir Safronkov said Russian planes have been carrying out humanitarian air drops in Syria "for a long time," and he welcomed the "very important" recognition that this may be the only way to supply aid to some areas.

In Brussels, European Union leaders were expected to call on Russia and Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces to halt attacks on moderate opposition groups and immediately end all airstrikes.

A draft statement for their summit starting Thursday, seen by The Associated Press, calls on "Russia and the Syrian regime to stop at once attacking moderate opposition groups" and for "an immediate cessation of aerial bombardments in civilian areas."

MSF said that since the war broke out in 2011, the Syrian government has not granted permission for it to provide medical aid in the country, despite its repeated requests. Because of that, its work has been limited to areas held by opposition forces.

After the latest strikes, MSF operations director Isabelle Defourny said she expects affiliated medical staffers in Syria will now ask that their locations be specified to government officials.

"We gave to the Russian ambassadors in Paris (and) in Geneva coordinates for three hospitals located in very intense conflict zones, but not for all of them, and it was a decision taken together with the medical staff of the health facilities that we support," she said.

"It was a huge discussion inside MSF and mainly with the medical directors of the health facilities that we support inside Syria," Defourny added. "The staff of the hospital (and) the director of the hospital didn't know if they would be better protected if they give the GPS or not."

She said the Maaret al-Numan hospital was widely known and had already been hit by strikes in the past. "Those are not underground or invisible hospitals," she said of the medical sites, alluding to the difficulty of the decision not to formally identify its location.
Don't forget to put up your low-recognition flag, and the red cross thingy on the roof.
Even giving GPS coordinates is no guarantee of protection, she said, citing a deadly U.S. airstrike in October that destroyed a MSF hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan. That hospital had been identified to both Afghan and U.S. forces fighting an insurgency there.
Maybe, but if you give them the coordinates along with the MSM, you'll at least be left with a legal leg to stand on after you get the $hit bombed out of you.
Also Thursday, MSF provided a report documenting war wounded and deaths that draws on information from 70 "makeshift hospitals" and clinics it works with in Syria. While only "a small fraction of the health facilities in Syria," those medical facilities recorded a total of 7,009 people dead and 154,647 people wounded last year.

Russia warns Assad on vow to retake all of Syria
Russia's envoy to the UN on Friday warned long-term ally President Bashar al-Assad over his vow to retake all of Syria, saying he faced dire consequences if he did not comply with Moscow over the peace process.
Nod nod wink wink nudge nudge...
"Russia has invested very seriously in this crisis, politically, diplomatically and now also militarily," Vitaly Churkin told Kommersant daily, referring to an international agreement to cease hostilities sealed in Munich last week.

"Therefore we would like Assad also to respond to this," he said, adding that the Syrian leader's stance "is not in accord with the diplomatic efforts that Russia is making."

At their meeting in Munich, the 17-nation group backing Syria's peace process agreed to work for a ceasefire, the lifting of starvation sieges and the resumption of talks.

In an interview with AFP last week, Assad defiantly pledged to retake the whole of the country, speaking before the plan for a nationwide "cessation of hostilities" in Syria was announced.

Asked to comment to journalists on the unusually outspoken criticism of Assad, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday said President Vladimir Putin backed the Syrian peace process but stressed that the ceasefire had not yet been implemented.

"Everyone including President Putin recognises that there is no alternative other than a political resolution," he said.

Nevertheless the ceasefire "is now being worked out, discussed. Wait, let's not run ahead," Peskov said.

In the interview, Churkin, who has served as Russia's ambassador to the United Nations since 2006, stressed that if Syria "follows Russia's leadership in resolving this crisis, then they have a chance to come out of it in a dignified way."

"If they in some way stray from this path -- and this is my personal opinion -- a very difficult situation could arise. Including for themselves," he warned. "If they proceed on the basis that no ceasefire is necessary and they need to fight to a victorious end, then this conflict will last a very long time and that is terrifying to imagine."

Syria is "already on the brink of falling apart," he said.

- 'Too late' for no-fly zone -

Churkin however also suggested that Assad's comments were made for political impact.

"It isn't worth putting too much significance into one statement or another and dramatising them," he said. "We should be guided not by what he says, with all respect for the statements of a person at such a high level, but by what he finally does."

Churkin said he hoped that Damascus realised that the Munich agreement was "a unique chance for Syria after five years of unremitting destruction."

While German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeated calls for a no-fly zone in Syria to protect civilians, Churkin dismissed this as unworkable.

"It's already too late to talk about this. When everyone is flying and bombing, there is no question of no-fly zones," he said.

He said it was "theoretically possible" to imagine such a proposal during the process of implementing the ceasefire agreement but called this "purely theoretical... particularly in the circumstances of our presence in Syria."

Russia launched air strikes in Syria in September last year to support Assad and fight "terrorists", saying it was targeting the Islamic State group and other jihadists.

Decision looms for Army sergeant who protected Afghan boy
A decorated Army sergeant who protected an Afghan boy from a child molester could find out any day whether his actions will end his career in the military.

Sgt. First Class Charles Martland, a Green Beret with an 11-year Special Forces career, was stationed in Afghanistan in 2011 when the boy's mother came to him and said she'd been beaten and her son raped by a local police commander. Martland and another soldier summoned the police official and, when the man laughed at them, threw him off the base. Martland and Daniel Quinn were both disciplined for their actions.

Last year, amid military cuts, the Army Human Resources Command recommended Martland be discharged in part based on his disciplinary record, but an official decision by U.S. Army brass is expected by March 1.

"Charles did the right thing in Afghanistan by standing up to a child rapist and corrupt commander, and now it's the Army's turn to do the right thing and reverse the decision to expel him from the service," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., whose office has been assisting Martland. "Permitting Charles to continue serving is in the best interest of the Army and the nation."

Supporters mounted an online petition backing Martland and separately, 93 members of Congress have called for an investigation into the military's silence in the face of rampant sexual abuse of children in Afghanistan.

While Quinn left the military voluntarily, Martland, who graduated in 2006 from Special Forces Qualification Course, has always seen himself as a lifer. After a deployment to Iraq in 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan in January 2010 as part of a 12-man unit. He and his team found themselves fighting large numbers of Taliban militants in the volatile Kunduz Province.

Martland was awarded a Bronze Star with Valor for his actions. According to one evaluation, he also was praised by Gen. David Petraeus, then commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan.

The 2011 incident occurred at the remote outpost where Martland was stationed. The 12-year-old boy and his mother showed up at camp, and the boy showed the Green Berets where his hands had been tied. A medic took him to a back room for an examination with an interpreter, who told them the boy had been raped by a man identiffied as Afghani Police commander Abdul Rahman.

Rahman allegedly beat the boy's mother for reporting the crime after learning that they went to the Army outpost. This led Martland and team leader Daniel Quinn to confront Rahman.

According to reports of the incident, Rahman confessed to the crime and laughed it off. This led Martland and Quinn to shove the smug police official to the ground

Rahman reported the incident to another Army unit in a nearby village, which led to Quinn and Martland being pulled from their assignments.

One year ago, the Army conducted a "Qualitative Management Program" review board and called for Martland - among thousands of other soldiers with prior disciplinary issues - to be "involuntary discharged" by Nov. 1, 2015.

Martland appealed the decision and a final ruling on his discharge has been delayed until now. With the deadline rapidly approaching, other legal advocates have come to his aid, and even garnered over 300,000 signatures in a petition calling for the decision to be overturned.

"After acting to protect a child from sexual assault from an Afghan commander, SFC Martland was punished and could be kicked out of the military at any time," said Jay Sekulow, of the American Center for Law and Justice. "What's equally disturbing are reports that the military has allowed Afghanistan forces to sexually abuse young children on U.S. bases."

Loser Pope takes on Donald Trump, suffers massive humiliation, slinks off to {walled} Vatican
Donald Trump has somehow managed to bait His Holiness into a public fight:
Sorry, gotta disagree. The Pope stepped into that one all by his politically gullible self.
Hours after praying for Mexican migrants who died trying to reach the United States, Pope Francis singled out Donald Trump, telling reporters aboard the papal plane that anybody who wants to build border walls "is not Christian."

"A person who thinks only about building walls -- wherever they may be -- and not building bridges, is not Christian," Francis said Thursday, according to a translation from the Associated Press. "This is not in the Gospel."

He added: "I'd just say that this man is not Christian if he said it this way."
Christianity is not a religion of suicide. You have to expand the system under consideration until it is large enough to include all the causes and effects. Has the Pope considered Mexico's laws regarding illegal immigration and foreign workers vs. America's? Crime? America's already generous welfare and immigration laws? SUSTAINABILITY? What would happen if the US was reduced to only being able to take care of its own? The hypocrisy of the Vatican's immigration laws and protective wall when compared to this situation? Jesus could turn water into wine and make fish appear out of thin air. We can't. There's no asking WWJD here.
According to ABC News, the Pope's criticism of Trump was prompted by a reporter who asked: "Can a good Catholic vote for this man?" ABC's account notes that the Pope demurred on that aspect of the question, by saying:

"About whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt."

You'll be shocked to hear that this restraint did not cause Trump to temper his response in the slightest. Trump's statement is worth quoting in full:

If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS's ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them. The Pope only heard one side of the story -- he didn't see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United States. He doesn't see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.

For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.

Let's pause for a moment of silence to marvel at the degree to which Trump managed to stay on his core message here. Remember, the story that Trump has been telling for at least six months now has not changed. Our elites are failing you, because they are allowing you to be cheated by a whole cast of villains -- illegals, multinational corporations, other countries (usually China, but more recently, Mexico, which Trump now says is "the new China") -- whether through stupidity, corruption, weakness, or some combination of the above.

In his response to the Pope, Trump hit every one of these buttons: Mexico wants to continue to "rip off" America; our stupid leaders continue to allow it to happen because they are getting "outsmarted"; Trump would not, because he is "wise" to the scam; and so, "they" (Trump's word) have now enlisted the Pope "as a pawn" in keeping the scam going.

The only slight tweak to Trump's storyline on display here is that he merely said the Pope was an unwitting victim of this scam, rather than suggesting that he is one of the elites who is actively complicit in it, either through corruption or weakness or stupidity (though arguably Trump did hint at the possibility of the latter two).
I've never seen Donald read from a script before. He did when responding to a reporter's question about the Pope.
Oh, and for good measure, in his reply to the Pope, Trump also managed to reiterate his oft-repeated vow to Make Christianity Great Again.

Not even the Pope can knock Donald Trump off message.

#2  There's no asking WWJD here.

Jesus didn't seem to mind the Romans who invaded his country even when they crucified Him. I think he saw them all as potential converts and indeed they were because Rome eventually became the very seat of Christianity. That's where the Pope lives, surrounded by a wall of course. There is a great deal of irony in all of this. The Jews hated paying taxes to the Romans and I'm not all that crazy about my tax dollars subsidizing the lives of illegal immigrants. So maybe I'm really a Jew at heart. But Jesus told the Jews to pay their taxes. But the illegal immigrants are mostly Catholic so I don't have to convert them. All I have to do is subsidize them, let them turn the United States into a Third World country, let them smuggle narcotics into this country and let them vote for Hillary.

I have no problem with a couple of bridges across the Tijuana River, one at I-5 and the other at I-805, as long as we have lots of those nice ICE guys there to check for visas.

#3  The walls around Vatican City are about thirty feet high and made of stone. You want to immigrate to the Vatican? See if it is even possible. Just go check. You don't have a life span long enough to even climb the stacked paper work . Provided you can even get to see the pile.
The Pope is somewhat dim....plus he does seem to sound and act like a clueless EUroweenie. The only people who want to move to EUroweenie are Moslems. See if you can figure that out. Moslem home countries are sh*&holes. And EUroweenies are stupid. You know where that leads without even looking.

#6  #4 for those who do not know -

Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution -

The property of all land and water within national territory is originally owned by the Nation, who has the right to transfer this ownership to particulars. Hence, private property is a privilege created by the Nation.

Expropriations may only be made when there is a public utility cause.

The State will always have the right to impose on private property constraints dictated by "public interest". The State will also regulate the exploitation of natural resources based on social benefits and the equal distribution of wealth. The state is also responsible for conservation and ecological considerations.

All natural resources in national territory are property of the nation, and private exploitation may only be carried out through concessions.

Nuclear fuel may only be exploited and used by the State. The use of Nuclear elements in the Nation may only have peaceful purposes (i.e., Mexico cannot build nuclear weapons).

This article also deals with other subtleties on what constitutes Mexico's territory.

Foreign nationals cannot own land within 100 km of the borders or 50 km of the coast; however, foreigners can have a beneficial interest in such land through a trust (fideicomiso), where the legal ownership of the land is held by a Mexican financial institution. The only precondition sine qua non to granting such a beneficial interest is that the foreigner agree that all matters relating to such land are the exclusive domain of Mexican courts and Mexican jurisdiction, and that in all issues pertaining to such land, the foreigner will conduct him or herself as a Mexican, and settle any issues arising from their interest in such land exclusively through Mexican courts and institutions. The stipulated consequence of a failure to abide by these terms is forfeiture to the nation of their interests in all lands where the foreigner has such beneficial interests.

That an area of land at the coast (20 meters from the highest tide line) is federal property which cannot be sold.

D'em fools on HGTV thinking they're buying land on the coast (till some local judge decides to nullify their fideicomiso).

Bad news for Ted Cruz: his eligibility for president is going to court
Looks like we need more pictures of Trump since he doesn't seem to be going away. Maybe we could use this image until then. ;-)
The Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago has agreed to hear a lawsuit on Sen. Ted Cruz's eligibility for president -- virtually ensuring that the issue dominates the news in the runup to the South Carolina primary.
Funny graphic, unless it's that time of year.
Cruz was born in Canada to a US citizen mother and a noncitizen father. The Constitution requires presidents be "natural-born citizens," but what exactly that requires hasn't been settled in court.

Now, perhaps, it will be. The lawsuit in Illinois aims to resolve the question by challenging Cruz's eligibility for the presidency. It was filed by Lawrence Joyce, an attorney who has told local media that he supports Dr. Ben Carson and has had no connection with the Trump campaign.

"Joyce said his concern is that the eligibility issue lie unresolved during Republican primaries, thus letting the Democrats take advantage of it after a potential Cruz nomination, when it'd be too late," reports the Washington Examiner.

When this question initially came up, the conventional wisdom among constitutional lawyers was that it was a nonissue: Cruz was obviously eligible. But as the debate has heated up among candidates (with Donald Trump, in particular, fanning the flames), it's also begun to heat up among constitutional law scholars.

The issue is actually twofold: whether Ted Cruz should be considered a natural-born citizen, and whether Cruz's own preferred school of constitutional interpretation would see it that way.
Much more at the link. Note to posters -- these should be trimmed way back. Interested readers can hit the link.

US air strikes 'kill 40 people' in Libya
U.S. warplanes have killed up to 40 people in air strikes on an ISIS training camp in Libya, it has been reported.

A Western official quoted by the New York Times said U.S. jets targeted a senior ISIS mastermind behind two major jihadist attacks in Tunisia.

Intelligence officials said was 'likely' that Noureddine Chouchane was among those killed.

He is suspected of being behind two Tunisia attacks last year: one at the Bardo Museum that killed 22 people and the other at a beach resort in Sousse in which 38 died.

Trey Gowdy probe claims '€˜big wins' in getting Benghazi info
[Wash Times] Rep. Trey Gowdy said Thursday that the congressional probe into the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack made "significant breakthroughs" this month in getting access to key figures involved in writing the talking points that misled the country into erroneously blaming a video.

Mr. Gowdy, chairman of the investigation, said the White House, after long negotiations, made both then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice and top White House official Ben Rhodes available for questioning.

The House Select Committee on Benghazi is the first congressional probe to interview Mr. Rhodes, who was involved in crafting the message, and Ms. Rice, who delivered the erroneous talking points to the nation in a round of Sunday political talk show interviews shortly after the attack.

Top defense and intelligence officials said they knew at the time that the attack, on the night of Sept. 11, 2012, was a terrorist assault -- but Ms. Rice instead said it was mob violence incited by an Internet video mocking Islam.

Trump: He was for war in Iraq, before he was against it.
[Legal Insurrection] In his The America We Deserve Trump noted Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction and targeted Iraq strikes had little impact on their overall capabilities. The Donald said the best course might be against Iraq to "carry the mission to its conclusion."

Wrote Trump:

"Consider Iraq. After each pounding from U.S . warplanes, Iraq has dusted itself off and gone right back to work developing a nuclear arsenal. Six years of tough talk and U.S. fireworks in Baghdad have done little to slow Iraq's crash program to become a nuclear power. They've got missiles capable of flying nine hundred kilometers--more than enough to reach Tel Aviv. They've got enriched uranium. All they need is the material for nuclear fission to complete the job, and, according to the Rumsfeld report, we don't even know for sure if they've laid their hands on that yet. That's what our last aerial assault on Iraq in 1999 was about. Saddam Hussein wouldn't let UN weapons inspectors examine certain sites where that material might be stored. The result when our bombing was over? We still don't know what Iraq is up to or whether it has the material to build nuclear weapons. I'm no warmonger. But the fact is, if we decide a strike against Iraq is necessary, it is madness not to carry the mission to its conclusion. When we don't, we have the worst of all worlds: Iraq remains a threat, and now has more incentive than ever to attack us."

#4  The sad thing is the world believes Iraq had no WMD because the press has been repeating that over and over to make W look bad.

Then you have Libya that turned over their WMD stockpile after Saddam was pulled out of the Spider hole, which is what we wanted, but he was bombed out of power.

So the lesson the world got was if you get WMD you are safe.

[Huffpoo] A former Waffle House waitress is behind bars after cops say she put methamphetamine in her co-worker's drink, leaving him comatose.

Putin's next strike could be anywhere in the world, warns Polish official
[The Guardian] Adviser to Poland's president says Russia's Syria intervention demonstrated to US that its diplomatic 'pivot to Asia' was a mistake.

Vladimir Putin's new geopolitical ambitions have led the US to realise it made a strategic mistake turning away from Europe and making a pivot to Asia, the foreign affairs adviser to the Polish president has said.

Krzysztof Szczerski urged the west to recognise that the Russian president was no longer simply seeking to restore his country's dominance in former Soviet states such as Ukraine, but to adopt a more dominant military posture across the globe.

He told the Guardian: "It is now a strategy of geopolitical confrontation, so the next strikes of Putin are not guaranteed to be in the post-Soviet sphere. It could be anywhere in the world. It is wrong to think that Putin has narrow territorial limits. Syria has shown that is not the case."

Szczerski said Putin's Syrian intervention last year showed Russia had the capacity to move large amounts of equipment at speed across a great distance without their preparations being noticed. "His capacity to set these new challenging fronts around the world should be an alarm call," he said.

Manny Pacquiao sez people are 'alarmed by the truth' about gay marriage
[Guardian] Manny Pacquiao says that he respects Nike's decision to sever ties with him over his comments about gay relationships but remains opposed to same-sex marriage and added he's happy that "a lot of people were alarmed by the truth".

Nike said on Wednesday that it will no longer have any business dealings with the former Filipino world champion, adding that it found his comments "abhorrent." Nike says it strongly opposes any kind of discrimination.

"Whatever decision Nike makes is its decision and I respect that and its sponsorship of me now only involves my clothes for my fight," Pacquiao told reporters on Thursday. "Our contract has already ended aside from sponsoring the boxing."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hopeless but not Serious (Spengler)
Welcome to Permanent War, as Russian Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev dubbed today's Middle East. It isn't as bad as it sounds, provided, of course, that you're not in it. The bonfire built on tribal enmity and national disillusionment will have to burn itself out over time. The risk lies in the possible spread of the fire outside the region.

First, a quick review of what is not going to happen in Syria, rhetoric to the contrary:
Neither Turkey nor Saudi Arabia will send ground troops into northern Syria and fight US-backed Kurdish militia. Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz declared on Sunday that his country had "no intention" of sending its army into Syria, while Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir said that deployment of Saudi forces is up to the United States.

Turkey won't send combat aircraft into Syria to be shot down by Russian air defenses. Turkey would only sacrifice its aircraft in the hope of drawing the United States into a showdown with Russia, and the United States has evidently told Ankara that it's on its own. Saudi Arabia may base some aircraft in Turkey, but won't use them. The United States does not want to finnd out how good Russia's S-400 air defense system actually is; Pentagon analysts believe that it is very good indeed.

The Russian-Iranian reduction of Aleppo will add little to the flood of Syrian refugees. Perhaps 40,000 people have fled Aleppo and nearby towns. Syria's refugee count had already reached 5 million in late 2013.

Russia and the United States will not stumble into a strategic confrontation over a long-since-unsalvageable patch of Levantine desert.

As long as the dance of death remains within the Middle East as such, the strategic risks to the rest of the world will be small. It is disgusting, but not dangerous. The risk is that the conflict will spill over into the rest of the world. There are two ways in which that might happen: through the actions of terrorists on the ground, and through long-range missiles bearing weapons of mass destruction.

America's past support for Islamists has spawned conspiracy theories in Russian and Chinese media to the effect that the US created ISIS in order to destabilize its rivals. That is not the case. Americans have a brain cramp about democracy. The Republican and Democratic mainstreams both believe that the mere form of democracy as such will fix most of society's ills. No accumulation of facts to the contrary appears sufficient to shake the democracy cult.
Except inside USA where democracy/freedom of speech/presumption of innocence has long since been sacrificed on the altar of equality.

F-16 aircraft can be manufactured in India, says Lockheed Martin
[DAWN] Lockheed Martin, a premier defence technologies company from the United States (US), on Thursday said it is ready start manufacturing F-16 fighter jets in India, in support of 'Make in India' initiative launched by the incumbent Narendra Modi government, reported The Times of India.
Having gobbled up nearly all the defense tech companies in the country, Lockheed made itself a single point of failure. If the plane can be built in India it can be built in China or Russia or Pakistain.
The defence company also supported the ongoing talks between the two countries for the setting up of Lockheed Martin's manufacturing plant in India, one of the largest projects under the 'Make in India' initiative.

"We are ready to manufacture F-16 aircraft in India and support the Make in India initiative," Phil Shaw, chief executive of Lockheed Martin India told news hounds at the Singapore Airshow 2016.

Report: U.S. Rescue Team Was on Its Way to Benghazi, But Was Turned Back
"The evidence is overwhelming that the United States had several rescue teams ready to go during the 2012 Benghazi attacks, but someone -- possibly the president himself -- prevented them from acting. #1  After reading about the Benghazi fiasco almost non-stop since 2013, I personally have come to the conclusion, the abandonment of Ambassador Stephens and this security detail to Al Qaeda was deliberate and willful

Stephens stumbled into something he should not have and it was a concern he would blab about some CIA program gone wrong that would embarrass our President and our SECSTATE

SO he goes to Benghazi to dig around some more into something and when the bullets started flying, it was viewed as an opportunity to close the door on a program and keep it black.

#2  SPOD has it right.

The long held theory that someone was running guns in Benghazi and the project was abruptly terminated and everyone flown out via charter appears valid. Keeping in mind neither facility was thoroughly investigated or sanitized, let alone re-activated.

Anti-Assad forces backed by the Klingons [which we've seldom heard much about] are continuing to get their arses handed to them in Syria by Russian air strikes.

At the bottom of it all, the Obama administration's continued insistence on 'regime change' in Syria, coupled with the Russian response of 'come here and WWIII will begin, so go bugger off.'

Oh, I have failed to mention the wasted 13 hours of potential in-extremis response time, the very precise placement of 4 or 5 mortar rounds, or the anti-Mohammad video which the Obama regime still clings to as the cause of all the difficulties. It would appear only a few minor details remain untold, or is my logic in error ?

A pox on the gutless purveyors of deceit and cover-up as well as the beltway party facilitators, both past and present, who are aware of the truth, but continue to ignore it.

28 Villages Cleared Of ISIS Militants In Achin
Local officials in Nangarhar said Thursday that at least 28 villages were cleared of Daesh fighters in Achin district in the province.

The areas were cleared in a military operation carried out by security forces over the past few days. Officials said about 50 militants were killed.

"Achin is among the important districts in Nangarhar and insurgents can enter it from the other side of the border, therefore we are trying to ensure the security of the area," said Nangarhar police chief Fazl Ahmad Shirzad.

"A public uprising played a vital role in eliminating Daesh fighters [in Achin]. We thank them," said NDS director in Nangarhar Dad Mohammad Harifi said.

Meanwhile Nangarhar governor Salim Kunduzi vowed to start development projects in Achin in the near future.

"I will direct all the district chiefs [in Nangarhar] to stay in their districts not in Jalalabad city and if they do not do so they should leave their job and stay at home," he added.

A number of Nangarhar residents meanwhile spoke of Daesh cruelty in their areas.

"We are fed up with Daesh cruelty. We call on government to start upliftment projects here in our area," said Shah Wali, a tribal elder in Achin.

According to local officials, a number of healthcare centers that were closed in Achin over the past few months will be reopened in the next few days.

Two Badakhshan Districts Run By Insurgents
Badakhshan provincial governor Ahmad Fisal Bigzad raised concerns over insurgents' activites on Thursday and said that Jurm and Yamgan districts of Badakhshan are completely under the control of insurgents.

But he said government forces are currently engaged in heavy fighting with the militants - many of whom are foreign.

"Two districts are completely under enemy control and some other districts like Ragh are under threat," said Fisal Bigzad, the provincial governor.

There are concerns that with the weather warming up battles will increase in the province.

"We have full preparations both for summer and spring, if the warm weather has a positive effect for the enemy then there are positive effects for us as well," said Mohiuddin Ghori Pamir, ANA's 20 division commander.

Amid the ongoing fighting in Badakhshan, residents have taken up arms against the insurgents to defend their villages.

"To defend our country, our dignity we took up arms and we will not allow anyone to come and rule by tyranny here," said one Tagab district resident.

Government armed forces however have assured residents they will combat the insurgents in Badakhshan province.

"We are fully prepared against the enemy and we will defend the country and people's wealth and dignity," said one NDS solider.

Syrian rebel forces make new advances in Hasakah
QAMISHLI – Western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday made new gains against militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province, on the border with Iraq, military sources reported.

Subsequent to fierce clashes, Kurdish-Arab alliance of the SDF drove ISIS militants from 11 villages in southeastern Hasakah.

The SDF units have recaptured the villages of Dilan, Simalka, Ballouna, Dabshi, Meshal, Mashwar, Khirba, Givara, Umm Tanak, Umm Bouja and Misherfa –near the Iraqi border.

More than 20 ISIS militants were killed in Thursday’s clashes.
Demonstrates what resolve, indifference to large numbers of casualties, and close air support can do...
Speaking to ARA News, official spokesman of the SDF, Tallal Silo, said their units seized a large deal of ammunition and weapons from ISIS militants.

“Most of those weapons have been brought by the terrorist group from Iraq to be used against our forces. Today ISIS has lost a new battle against our SDF forces. Our campaign will continue until cleansing Syria’s northern region from ISIS terrorists,” he said.

Silo added that the U.S.-led coalition has conducted several airstrikes on ISIS fighting positions in the area, “which facilitated the SDF progress on Thursday”.

The SDF, which includes Kurdish, Arab and Christian units, had earlier liberated more than 240 towns and villages from ISIS militants on the border with Iraq, including the key town of al-Hawl which has been for long used by the jihadis as a supply route between Syria and Iraq.

The alliance is currently preparing for an extended military operation against the radical group in the city of Shaddadi –the main bastion for ISIS militants in Hasakah province.

The SDF units have recently launched a new military campaign in northern Raqqa and Aleppo, and recaptured large territories from ISIS and al-Qaeda-linked groups.

Rustam Sadhua has been accused of obtaining a Pak NIC through fraudulent means and was arrested after his application for pre-arrest bail was rejected by a court.

FIA sources claim Sadhua is the brother-in-law of Pak MNA Asfandyar Bhandara and arrived in the country in 1982, later obtaining an NIC.

Sadhua had filed an application for pre-arrest bail in the court of special judge central, Malik Nazeer, which was rejected today, leading to his arrest.

When contacted, Bhandara expressed satisfaction over the Indian citizen's arrest. Bhandara said he had time and again complained about the suspect's conduct and had publicly dissociated himself from Sadhua.

Almost unregulated crossing at Torkham a security challenge
[DAWN] Days before the deadly attack on Bacha Khan University Campus in Charsadda, four holy warriors, in groups of twos, quietly crossed the regular border-crossing at Torkham, without any checks or hindrances, security officials have confirmed.

"Had there been a proper system there, at least two of them would have been caught there and then. The whole plot would have been unearthed before they could carry out the attack," a security bigshot said.

Two of the four attackers in the Jan 20 assault on BKU were identified through the biometric system with the National Database and Registration Authority. One was from Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
and the other from Sararogha in South Wazoo. Both had been issued CNICs.

"We would have stopped and asked them a few questions. We would have asked why a Swati boy or a Waziristani boy crossing over from Afghanistan via Torkham. What business had they there?" the official said.

"But the tragedy is that while we continue to impress upon unyielding Afghans for tighter border control and tighter border management, we don't do a fig about border management on our side of the Durand," an exasperated security official said. "Our pleas fall on deaf ears."

'Conversion will not annul a Hindu marriage'
[DAWN] PML-N MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwami on Wednesday won the support of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights for amending the Hindu Marriage Bill already cleared by a National Assembly committee.

Dr Ramesh had been demanding removal of a clause in the draft Hindu Marriage Bill which stated that a marriage would be dissolved if any of the spouses converted to another religion.

"The clause can be misused to forcefully convert married Hindu women the same way maidens of tender years have been kidnapped and forced to convert to other religions," he pleaded with the Senate committee.

Clause 12 of the bill hit the basic human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
of the Hindus living in Pakistain, he said.

Senator Farhatullah Babar supported annulling 'the repressive' clause. "It amounts to promoting forced conversions not only of young unmarried girls but also of married Hindu women. It is a grave human right violation of the Hindus," said the PPP senator.

Senate committee chairperson Nasreen Jalil of MQM and some others, including senators Sitara Ayaz and Mir Kabir Ahmed Muhammad Shahi, also found the clause repugnant.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
most committee members were reluctant to accept Dr Ramesh's proposal that bride and groom must be 18 years of age. His argument was that fixing the age limit would stop kidnapping and conversion of Hindu girls as young as 12. In any case, he added, Hindu boys and girls cannot marry a co-religionist or outside their religion until they are 18. "That is the age the custodianship of their parents ends," said Dr Kumar.

Turkey has turned into bloodbath after Ankara blast: Opposition
[Iran Press TV] Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) says the country has descended into a bloodbath following a deadly car bomb explosion targeting military vehicles in the capital, Ankara.

“The point we arrived at is that the country has turned into a bloodbath. It is a pity. It is wrong for this country. All of us are in pain. My heart is hurting. It is hurting deeply,” CHP leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, told reporters on Thursday.

He further noted that Turkey is not being governed well under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

At least 28 people lost their lives when a car laden with explosives detonated on Wednesday next to military buses as they waited at traffic lights on Ankara’s Inonu Boulevard. At least 81 others sustained injuries in the act of terror.

Twenty-seven of the deceased were members of the military while the only civilian was a journalist identified as Gulsen Yildiz, who specialized in agriculture.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
CIA Has Dedicated Program to Recruit Transgender Individuals
[FREEBEACON] The Central Intelligence Agency three-year "Diversity and Inclusion Strategy" includes a dedicated program to recruit transgender individuals and agency-wide "unconscious bias" training.
"Welcome to the Central Intelligence Reeducation Center! Blacks, Mestizo Hispanics, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Mpslems, please move to the front of the room. The rest of you prejudiced bastards stay where you are."
The plan, released by the CIA's Diversity and Inclusion Office last week, lays out several goals for "weaving diversity and inclusion throughout the talent cycle."
I'm guessing that "talent cycle" doesn't include agents, though it probably includes recruiters and controllers. It'll show up especially among analysts, where a degree in black studies or a sex change will be considered equivalent to a degree in economics or 5/5 fluency in Pashto.
One agency goal is "Becoming an Employer of Choice," and includes "dedicated programs" to recruit every demographic imaginable.
The Agency's always been "an employer of choice." Lots of jackasses have gotten laid because they "work for the CIA." They don't mention the fact that they're in building maintenance.
"Cultivating an inclusive culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness enables all officers to contribute to their full potential," the CIA plan stated. "When employees feel included, have a voice, and are given opportunities to develop and maximize their potential, we create an organization of choice and become a model employer for the full diversity of America's talent."
That's a mouthful of butter that means approximately squat. Mot of us have read such "mission statements" dozens of times before, or at least part of it before losng interest. Inclusion of the word "inclusive" is merely the latest modification, adding a word to the wordy. Ex-PFC Wintergreen woul be amused.
"We will continue to enrich our workforce by targeting diverse communities across the United States to meet our talent needs, with dedicated programs for citizens of African, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Native American descent; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals; Persons with Disabilities; Veterans; and Women," the CIA said.
Vets are way back, next to the caboose, despite the fact that they're the ones who can step into the jobs with max understanding and competence.
Among the intelligence agency's key actions to meet this goal is to teach recruitment officers to "strengthen cultural competencies and combat unconscious bias."
I believe all my biases are now conscious. I don't like most people.
The CIA will measure its progress of recruiting minorities, LGBT individuals, veterans, and women by using an "inclusion index." The agency will also track "Diversity and gender break-down of applicant flow data and recruiting trends."
"Fansworth!"
"Sir!"
"Count the beans!"
"Yessir!"

Visit the State Department cafeteria, arrive early, sit near the windows and simply observe. 'Every demographic' can be quickly spotted and assessed as Foggy Bottom has achieved demographic nirvana. Next step, the personnel office for the 'how to.'

But what was I thinking? This isn't about recruitment, you've got those bases covered. This is about political correctness, internal agency propaganda, and power.

ISIS executes 2 in Palmyra
HOMS – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) have executed two young men in the city of Palmyra in Syria’s central Homs province, after accusing them of spying for the Syrian army, local sources reported on Thursday.

Ahmed al-Zoabi, 24, and Muhammad al-Sayik, 27, were arrested earlier on Wednesday in central Palmyra. They were both executed at the hands of ISIS militants on charges of spying for the Syrian regime’s army.

“The Sharia Court has accused them of leaking security information about ISIS in Palmyra to the Syrian army,” a local media activist told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Al-Zoabi and al-Sayik were publicly executed by firing squad on Thursday afternoon,” the source reported.

The historical city of Palmyra has been under the control of Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants since May, when the group stormed headquarters of the Syrian army and seized the whole city subsequent to fierce clashes.

Tightening race rattles Clinton World's nerves
[THEHILL] Allies of Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Dean Acheson ...
are growing nervous as the Democratic presidential race with Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
tightens ahead of contests in Nevada and South Carolina.

A new CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday found Clinton with a 1-point lead in Nevada, which hosts its caucuses on Saturday. That's a huge change from the 23-point lead Clinton enjoyed in a late December poll by Gravis.

In South Carolina, which hosts its primary election on Feb. 27, Clinton has a more comfortable 18-point lead according to a CNN/ORC poll. But even that edge has narrowed since Sanders crushed her in New Hampshire's primary last week.
As recently as mid-January, a poll from NBC, The Wall Street Journal and Marist found Clinton with a 33-point lead in South Carolina.

"I don't get it. I don't think anyone expected this race to look like this," said one former Clinton aide who maintains ties with the campaign. "A big loss in New Hampshire, basically a tie going into Nevada. You have to ask yourself, 'What's next?' "

Team Clinton maintains confidence that its lead in South Carolina will hold, but the potential loss in Nevada has put people on edge about a "domino effect" in which states could fall one by one to Sanders as he gains momentum.

"It's hard to feel confident about South Carolina if you lose Nevada," the former aide said.

Afghanistan
NDS prevents suicide bombing in Laghman
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The National Directorate of Security (NDS) – Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has prevented a suicide bombing in the capital of eastern Laghman province.

A statement released by NDS on Thursday states that Atta Mohammad S/O Agha Mohammad planned to explode his suicide vest in a busy part of Mehtarlam city but luckily he was arrested with the assistance of locals before he could reach to his target.

In a footage released by NDS, the suspect says he was recruited by Ashabuddin aka Nawlak who took him to Alishang District where he received training from Qari Janat Gul.

Atta Mohammad further says that after spending some days in Alishang, he was then told by Qari Janat Gul to carry out suicide attack on a commander of local police.

“I was told that I would go to paradise with doing this,” Atta Mohammad adds.
Religion's a funny thing, and I don't mean funny hah-hah. We in the "Abrahamic" strain (and I never heard that word before politix got overrun by apologists for Islam) are expected to believe that God created all of Creation, which means all the myriad galaxies making up the universe; is aware of every sparrow that falls; yet needs to be patted, praised, and adored daily or his ego will be so out of joint that you'll be consigned to Hell (did He make that?) for all Eternity, no second chances, dammit.

Yet not to believe in God is to attack the very foundation of Good versus Evil. Apparently the Mohammedan God approves of chopping people's heads off becaue he doesn't like music, and he approves of stealing women and girls and making them into sex slave.

I'm starting to think the Zoroastrians might have had a better handle on it, with Ahura Mazda (the Wise One, God of light and, by implication, goodness) and Ahraman (the God of Evil). The two exist empirically, since their works exist, and I'm not talking about the Pope. Zoroaster viewed life as a conflict between Right and Wrong, then cluttered up his religion with musings on the occult.

I'm not sure about the concept of the afterlife. It might be wishful thinking, since no one's come back to describe what death was like, at least not convincingly. Do all dogs go to heaven? Do all houseflies? Is it segregated by religion, with Mohammedans off in their own corner? Is there an Isle of the Blest, where Achilles and maybe Agamemnon live and bicker? Does it apply to all creatures everywhere -- remember the myriad galaxies? Do we get to meet them? That's kind of an infinite number of Isles.

I think you really have to be a true Believer to kill yourself in the name of religion. What if there's not an afterlife? What if the life you have is the only try at goodness you get? What if God's aware of every person that dies, with just as much concern as when the sparrow falls. I really don't feel significant enough for Him to care.

If some holy man told me that killing myself would please God, my response would be why wouldn't it please God if he blew himself up?

EU says Austrian asylum-seeker cap unlawful
[BASTROPENTERPRISE] The EU's top migration official says an Austrian plan to cap asylum-seeker numbers unlawful.

Dimitris Avramopoulos said in a letter Thursday that "Austria has a legal obligation to accept any asylum application that is made on its territory or at its border."

The letter to Austria's interior minister, seen by The Associated Press, said imposing a ceiling on asylum-seekers "would be plainly incompatible with Austria's obligations" under EU and international law.

Pope On Trump: Anyone Who Wants Border Walls Isn't Christian
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] Pope Francis said Thursday that Donald Trump is "not Christian" if he wants to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.
The wall around the Vatican, however, is dandy...
Trump immediately fired back, saying it is disgraceful for a religious leader to question a person's faith.

The rare back-and-forth between pontiff and presidential candidate was the latest astonishing development in a U.S. presidential race that has been roiled by Trump's freewheeling rhetoric and controversial policy proposals, particularly on immigration.

Iraq
Iraq sentences 40 ISIS to death over Tikrit massacre
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Iraqi court sentenced 40 captured members of ISIS to death on Thursday for the killing of hundreds of soldiers after their capture by the ultra-radical Death Eater group as it swept across northern Iraq in 2014, a judicial front man said.
Cut their heads off or shoot them before they "escape."
The slaughter of 1,700 soldiers after they fled from an ex-U.S. army base outside Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit has become a symbol of ISIS' brutality and the Sunni Death Eater group's sectarian hatred of Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority.

A Baghdad criminal court issued the death sentences based on what Abdul-Sattar al-Birqdar, front man for Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, said were convictions on terrorism charges. Seven defendants were acquitted and freed for lack of evidence.

Security forces tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
dozens of suspects over the mass killing of the soldiers after retaking Tikrit from ISIS last year. Twenty-four were convicted and sentenced to death last July, and are awaiting decisions on their appeals. There are more than 600 suspects in all, judicial officials say.

London-based rights watchdog Amnesia Amnesty International denounced the trial leading to the death penalties, saying it was "fundamentally flawed" and had displayed "a reckless disregard for justice and human life."

Amnesty said the total number of people sentenced to die in Iraq so far this year had risen to almost 100.

Birqdar said all death sentences were subject to review by the court of appeals. Iraqi law provides for an automatic appeal for all death-sentence and life-imprisonment cases, even if the defendants do not lodge an appeal themselves.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
death sentences in Iraq are often handed down after very brief trials in which defendants are poorly represented, seldom allowed to give evidence and are often tortured into making confessions that are then used against them.

Video images of the Shiite soldiers being machine-gunned in their hundreds, posted online by ISIS, rank as among the most deadliest single acts of bloodshed during a decade of periodic sectarian war in Iraq.

The Grand Turk
Turkey hits Kurd Kommie kamps
Turkey has launched overnight air strikes on Kurdish militant camps in northern Iraq overnight, only hours after a suicide car bomb attack targeting military buses killed 28 soldiers and civilians and wounded dozens in the Turkish capital Ankara, security sources said on Thursday.

According to Turkish media, a Syrian man, registered as a refugee in Turkey and affiliated with the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) was responsible for the rush hour attack on the capital.

A car loaded with explosives detonated next to the military buses as they waited at traffic lights near Turkey’s armed forces’ headquarters, parliament and government buildings in the administrative heart of Ankara late on Wednesday.

The military condemned the assault, describing it a terrorist attack. Senior security source said initial signs indicated that militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were accountable.

The co-leader of the PKK umbrella group, Cemil Bayik, said, “We don’t know who did this. But it could be an act of retaliation for the massacres in Kurdistan, referring to the Kurdish region covering parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran.

In a statement a few hours after the blast, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Turkey will not shy away from using its right to self-defense at any time, any place or any occasion.”

“Our determination to retaliate to these attacks, in Turkey and abroad, which aim at our unity, togetherness and future, is increasing with such actions.”

The attack comes as Turkey gets pulled deeper into the war in neighboring Syria and tries to contain some of the fiercest violence in decades in its predominantly Kurdish southeast.

It is participating in the international fight against ISIS in Syria and Iraq led by the US, and has been firing at Kurdish militia fighters in northern Syria in recent days.

It has also been fighting PKK militants in its own southeast where a 2-1/2 year ceasefire collapsed last July, plunging the region into its worst violence since the 1990s.

Marine Hero: I Was Attacked at DC McDonald's Because of My Skin Color
[INSIDER.FOXNEWS] A decorated U.S. Marine who was beaten and robbed at a Washington D.C. McDonald's said this morning that the attack was a "hate crime."

Veteran Marine Sgt. Christopher Marquez, who earned a Bronze Star for his heroism in Iraq, spoke out today in an exclusive Fox and Friends interview.

Marquez said that four or five males - along with at least one female - asked him if "black lives mattered" to him as he was eating last Friday.

He said at first he ignored the group, thinking they were just teens being rowdy.

Arabia
Houthis Relinquish Positions in Taiz after Siege of Sana’a
Jeddah- Yemen’s national army and Popular Resistance, on feb.17, registered a sizable withdrawal of Houthi militia and Republican Guard supporters of the ousted Ali Abdullah Saleh. The drawback was recorded in areas surrounding Taiz, which were previously converted into militant camps and operations’ launch headquarters.

Reasons behind the retraction are still not clear. However, senior military officials denoted that the retreat could be a result of several factors, mainly being that militia leaderships and Republican Guard are barricaded in different areas like Sana’a, Hajjah, and Saada. Militants are given orders to alter course and head towards Sana’a which is being cornered down by pro-legitimacy forces. Militias barricading Taiz are beginning to fall apart under a great shortcoming of military supplies, due to the Popular Resistance cutting off all supply routes.

Over the past months militias forced a blockade on Taiz and suspended all access of humanitarian relief. Civilians in Taiz have been deprived of both sustenance and medical care. Houthi belting of Taiz and persistence on holding it hostage seems to have washed down a bit. With all the military support deprivation militants are subjected to along with orders on leaving for Sana’a, is leading them to abandon Taiz.

Brig. Gen. Abdullah al-Subaihi, commander of the 15 Mika brigade and the north-eastern district of Aden, told Asharq Al-Awsat that pro-legitimacy Yemeni forces are logging broad progress across all battle fronts. They freed several regions previously dominated by militants. Houthi militia and the Republican Guard are directing vehicles towards north of Taiz, al-Subaihi added.

Yemen’s national army possesses a variety of choices to pick from. The retreating vehicles, in coordination with the Arab coalition air force, could be thumped. Should the vehicles be destroyed, militants in Sana’a will be left with no military support. A move can also be made to free Sana’a whilst militias are moving away from the southern fronts of the city, Brig. Al-Subaihi added.

Abdullah Ghallab, chairman to the military media council in Taiz, reported to Asharq Al-Awsat that recent information confirms withdrawal of militia units from different locations which entrapped Taiz before. The retreat is a reaction to the blockade imposed by the national army on Sana’a, Ghallab added.

Primary data suggests that militia leaderships are moving towards Sana’a accompanied with troops known by “Ansar Allah” (Supporters of God). However, many members deserted militia ranks, given they had joined for money and fought with light weapons. Those who left the militant ranks requested to join the Popular Resistance forces as a compensation for their deeds especially that most of them were civilians with limited income.

Strikes launched on Houthi headquarters in Nihm district, located in Sana’a governorate, are being intensified, military and Popular Resistance sources reported. A notable advancement of army units is being recorded after employing high-caliber weaponry. Houthi militants and Saleh armed supporters are relinquishing positions on a daily basis in battlefronts near Sana’a.

Rapid response operations executed by the Popular Resistance forces are confusing militant groups and rendering them out of action to avert the attacks. Over the past few days, more than 20 rapid response operations pounded militia grouping centers and militant-established checkpoints across several districts.

Popular Resistance forces are now using similar tactics in other quarters. Some resistance units had carried out a rapid response attack in the Shabwah Governorate after already attacking in two separate raids on militia sites in Beihan, a town in western Yemen.

Using an anti-tank missile, Popular Resistance forces also launched an attack across Tihamah at Hajjah governorate, which resulted in great losses among militias.

...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

"Saudi Arabia has expressed its readiness to send special forces to Syria as part of the coalition, with the goal of eliminating Daesh [Islamic State]. This is the mission and the responsibility," Adel al-Jubeir said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Riyadh has been a fierce opponent of Assad, but Jubeir said any participating Saudi force would make the battle against ISIS the priority.

"For now the objective of any ground forces or special forces would be to fight Daesh [Islamic State] on the ground in order to seize territory from them," he said.

"If they enter Syria, these forces will work in the framework of the international coalition to fight Daesh [Islamic State], there will be no unilateral operations," he said.

Asked if the mission could be expanded to include operations against Assad's forces, Jubeir said: "This would be something the international coalition would have to make a decision on."

Al-Jubeir also said Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen

Push-cart vendor convicted for selling hate material in Jhelum
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Wednesday convicted a cart owner known as Saifullah, alias Saifi, for selling 'hate material'.

He was convicted for selling CDs on his cart that contained hate speech. The conviction, rare as it is, entails 10 years in prison and a Rs100,000 fine. According to the verdict issued by ATC judge Rai Mohammad Ayub Khan Marth, the convict will have to serve another four months behind bars if the fine is not submitted.

The holy man who delivered the speeches the convict was selling is, however, remains very much on the lam.

"Countering hate speech and myrmidon material" is part of the 20-point agenda of the National Action Plan (NAP), introduced by the federal government in the aftermath of the Dec 16, 2014 attack on the Army Public School in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on May 22, 2015 arrested Saifullah, a cart owner from Jhelum, for selling CDs containing speeches by the cleric Mulazim Hussain Dogar. The CD is titled ‘Collection of Speeches of Maulana Mulazim Hussain Dogar Volume IV’.

Saifullah, who is 26, sells goods on his cart in a market in the Jhelum district to provide for his family.

According to the prosecution, Dogar may be the principal suspect in the matter, but he could not be apprehended because his whereabouts remained unknown.

There is, however, a Facebook page running under his name which currently has 3,149 followers. According to the page, Maulana Mulazim Hussain is a public figure, and a “famous scholar of Islam from Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat” (ASWJ). ASWJ is a banned outfit, according to the list of proscribed organisations.

According to a CTD inspector, the investigating officer did not try to investigate the cleric or his role in the matter. He said the investigation focused exclusively on the suspect, but added that the government has already proscribed ASWJ and had banned the cleric from making public speeches.

PTI MNA Mohammad Sarwar Khan said that unless the government takes strict action against the delivery of hate speech, sectarianism and religious extremism would not be curtailed.

“Action against the CD seller containing hate material is good, but the root cause – which is the clerics who deliver hate speeches – should also be arrested and punished accordingly,” he said.

Analyst Imtiaz Gul said that NAP is big on promises, but fails to deliver due to questionable political will. He said the legal system also lacks the capacity and will to prosecute the real offenders.

“The government is also unable to prosecute the troublemakers because of electoral constituencies considerations, and the other issue is corruption within the system and lacunae in the anti-terrorism laws,” he added.

A member of the Wirshefana Council of Elders has been kidnapped in west Tripoli. A family friend told the Libyan news agency LANA that Mabrouk Karnafa was seized by gunmen on Tuesday in the Hashan are of Janzour and that nothing had been heard of him since.

It is not known if the abduction was political or for ransom. The victim is the father of businessman Muftah Karnafa and in present circumstances where kidnappings for financial gain are rampant, the latter possibility is thought highly likely.

A week ago, Abdulmonem Tantoush, a brother of House of Representative’s member for nearby Maya Omar Ali Tantoush and a lawyer working with the economy minister, was kidnapped. A couple of days later a communications engineer from Kufra was also kidnapped in Tripoli. There is no news of either so far.

The Daily Caller's Evan Gahr first reported this story.

Schultz formed his super PAC, Americans for a Strong Middle Class, in October 2015. His super PAC has since taken out a $100 loan. Hungary Premier Blasts Migrant Flow As Threat To Europe
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] Hungary's prime minister vented his anger against the influx of migrants on a visit to Russia on Wednesday, saying that it threatens the identity of EU nations and raises terror threats.

Viktor Orban made the comments during a visit to Russia, speaking a day before a European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
summit where the migrant crisis is expected to feature prominently on the agenda.

Orban said after talks with President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
that Hungary disagrees with those in the EU who see the flow of migrants as something good.

"Europe's largest nations now believe it's mostly positive," he said through an interpreter. "Our view is that it's bad."

Without naming Germany or any other EU member, Orban went on to assail those in the EU who see Hungary's desire to protect its ethnic and Christian roots as a "voice from the Dark Ages."

In remarks heralding fierce debates at the EU summit, Orban said that for Hungary "Christian and national values will be as important in the future as they were in the past," adding that his nation believes that "uncontrolled migration will cause more harm than good."

He went on to assail the EU mechanism requiring members to host migrants, saying that "no one can be forced to live with the people whom they don't want to live with."

Asked about his view, Putin said that he wouldn't weigh in on an EU domestic issue, but praised Orban for his stance.

"We sympathize with the stance of the Hungarian leadership, the prime minister of Hungary to defend the European identity, the identity of their country, their people" he said.

Putin added that defeating extremism and rebuilding the fractured Mideast states are essential for stemming the migrant flow.

3 killed in raid on health clinic: Aid group
[Iran Press TV] A Swedish aid group says Afghan forces have killed two patients and a caretaker during an attack on one of its clinics in the central part of the war-torn country.

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) said on Thursday that the raid took place on its health facility in the Tangi Saidan area of Wardak Province on Wednesday night, accusing members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) of being behind the assault.

The charity denounced the deadly attack as a violation of international humanitarian law, with its country director Jorgen Holmstrom saying, "This attack constitutes a gross violation of humanitarian principles and the Geneva Convention that all actors of a conflict have to respect."

He added that the organization would further investigate the raid and "let those responsible be held accountable."

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
Afghan officials gave conflicting reports, saying that those killed were members of the Taliban bully boy group.

According to Akhtar Mohammad Tahiri, chief of the Wardak provincial council, Afghan special forces killed four at the clinic and jugged

three, including a doctor.

Wardak provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat also said the report is difficult to verify as the area is controlled by Taliban and that the raid may have been carried out by police and not the army.

"There was an operation by the Afghan forces, possibly police, in the area which targeted a group of enemy fighters, but it was not close to any health facility," he said.

Another bigwig also confirmed the attack but said it was not near the hospital.

The SCA runs health, education and other development program in nearly half of Afghanistan's 34 provinces. It has worked in the country since 1980.

In a separate development, the International Red Thingy on Thursday announced the suspension of its activities in Ghazni Province as five of its local staff there have been held hostage by what it described as a "local gang."

The psychodynamics of Hillary's arf-arf
[AMERICANTHINKER] Time and again, Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edmund Randolph ...
says and does things that indicate she is out of touch with her environment and the people around her. In a recent demonstration of insensitivity, she loudly yapped like a dog at a campaign rally. Why is she impervious to the offensiveness of her words and destructiveness of her actions? The answer lies in adult developmental psychology.

Hillary Clinton lived her life in a manner that did not require her to mature psychologically, morally, intellectually, or functionally. Psychology explains that neither a nation nor an individual advances during a crisis. A nation at war does not call for a constitutional convention. An embattled individual in crisis learns only the skills relevant to overcoming the enemy and surviving the crisis.

Hillary Clinton has spent her adult life at war, rumbling over political terrain in a heavily armed battle tank, seeing life through the periscope. People don't mature from their successes; they learn from being honest with themselves about their failures and correcting the errors which caused the mistakes to happen. This is why Hillary has learned so little from life. The Clintons protect themselves, trust no one, always persevere, and prevail over enemies. There have been many political war machines, but the greatest of these is the Clintons. The Clintons never fail.

A psychotherapeutic formula subtracts the years spent intoxicated or in crisis from chronological age to figure psychological maturity. By that reckoning, Hillary would be about 20, a dork in thick glasses who thinks it clever to twang about not standin' by her man and to make animal noises.

Seven TTP, LeJ men killed in 'encounter'
[DAWN] Seven suspected holy warriors belonging to banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
(LeJ) were killed in an 'encounter' in Sheikhupura late on Tuesday night.

A Counter Terrorism Department front man told Dawn on Wednesday they received information that about 10 to 15 suspicious men riding six cycle of violences were travelling towards Sharaqpur for an attack on law-enforcement personnel late on Tuesday night. He said Sheikhupura police were alerted to arrest the suspects.

He said as a police party challenged the holy warriors near a drain bridge in Sharaqpur area, they opened fire which was retaliated. He said when the firing stopped from both sides, the CTD teams found seven faceless myrmidons dead who were killed in 'firing by their accomplices'. Some five of their accomplices fled taking an advantage of darkness.

Police shifted the bodies to morgue for identification. The CTD team also collected evidence from the scene which showed that the suspected holy warriors belonged to proscribed TTP and LeJ.

The front man said police also recovered two kilo explosives, primacord, one Kalashnikov, two 244-bore rifles and three cycle of violences from the scene.

A senior CTD officer, on condition of anonymity, told this news hound the suspects were going to attack law-enforcement agencies in Sheikhupura region.

Daesh militants execute 17 young men in northern Iraq
[Iran Press TV] Members of Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
myrmidon group have executed more than a dozen young men in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk.

Sheikh Anwar al-Aasi, a leader of the al-Ubaid tribe near the thriving provincial capital city of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
said Daesh [Islamic State] murderous Moslems have decapitated 17 youths in the town of Hawijah, located about 282 kilometers (175 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad, and surrounding areas over the past three days on charges of writing banners against the Death Eaters, Arabic-language al-Sumaria satellite television network reported.

He added that the Takfiris later put the victims' heads at the entrance to Shamit village, and threatened their families of reprisal if they picked up the severed heads sooner than three days.

Aasi also called on government forces to accelerate the liberation of the southern and western parts of the province.

The development came only a day after Daesh [Islamic State] Takfiris killed eight Iraqi civilians by firing squad in Riyadh, situated 55 kilometers (34 miles) southwest of Kirkuk, while trying to leave the myrmidon-held area through the Hamrin Mountains. The murderous Moslems then left the victims' corpses unattended in the desert.

Oh, that's right. ISIS cuts the heads off of people they disagree with. The Iraqi government doesn't.

David Brock's hardball tactics worry Clinton supporters
[THEHILL] Key Democratic players are worried that Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as For a good time at 3 a.m. call Hillary and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Walter Q. Gresham ...
ally David Brock could be hurting her image and hampering her chances of winning the presidency.

In interviews over the past month, Clinton donors, fundraisers and operatives have told The Hill that the concerns about Brock's comments, particularly some of his attacks on Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
, stretch all the way to the top of Clinton's political machinery. A leading figure in the Democracy Alliance, the liberal equivalent of the conservative Koch brothers' donor network, said donors he associates with would like to put Brock "back in the can."

"I have heard people express concern that what he does could be harmful generally" to the campaign, the donor said.

Longtime Clinton fundraiser Bill Brandt, an Illinois-based businessman and personal friend of Bill Clinton
...former Democratic president of the U.S. Bill was the second U.S. president to be impeached, the first to deny that oral sex was sex, the first to have difficulty with the definition of is...
, said of Brock, "David is well meaning but I think perhaps like a zealot. He should keep it in check a bit. I don't think this needs to be about tearing Bernie down. ... It's getting nasty and it doesn't need to be."

One Brock comment that drew backlash regarded his plans to raise questions about the 74-year-old Sanders's health, seen by many as a low blow at the senator's age and one that left Clinton vulnerable given attempts by conservatives to portray her as being in fragile health.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Veterans' hospital in Cincinnati faces scrutiny after report
[CA.NEWS.YAHOO] U.S. Republican Senator Rob Portman on Wednesday asked an independent watchdog to look into "deeply disturbing" allegations of poor care and conflicts of interest at a Veterans Affairs hospital in his home state of Ohio.

The allegations are the latest problem for a scandal-plagued agency that has become a punching bag in the Nov. 8 presidential election campaign, particularly for Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

In a letter to the department's Inspector General, Portman urged a "swift and independent" probe after a report showed 34 current and former employees had blown the whistle about problems at the VA hospital in Cincinnati.

"These allegations are deeply disturbing. Those who have served their country in uniform are entitled to the best possible medical care," wrote Portman, who is up for reelection in November congressional elections.

The House of Representatives' Veterans Affairs committee is also investigating the allegations, said Republican Representative Brad Wenstrup from Ohio, a member of the panel who said he was "appalled" at the allegations.

"We will continue to investigate these troubling claims and hold the VA accountable," Wenstrup said.

The politicians were responding to an investigative report published on Tuesday by Scripps' Washington bureau and WCPO, the ABC affiliate in Cincinnati.

The report found surgeries and specialist care at the hospital, which treats 40,000 veterans, had been cut to save money, and described surgical instruments delivered to operating rooms contaminated with blood and bone debris from previous surgeries.

The report also alleged a top hospital official was improperly drawing two salaries and had prescribed controlled pain medication to the spouse of the regional director without a valid license.

The Department of Veterans Affairs declined to comment directly on the allegations. But on Saturday, an official said oversight of the clinic would be "temporarily realigned" to a VA regional office in Pittsburgh as it looked into the allegations.

Europe
European toilets a mystery to many colonists refugees
[DW] Many migrants will have never seen toilet paper before, and even if they have, water-free wiping is widely thought to be an unsanitary way of cleaning oneself. Sit-down flush toilets are a mystery despite the pictogram instructions that have meanwhile been put up.

Co-existence of cultures

A remedy is in the works, however: Sanitary specialists at the Global Fliegenschmidt toilet manufacturers in Coswig in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt have come up with a portable "multicultural toilet."

It's been on the market for just a few days, company head Peter Fliegenschmidt told DW. His company has sold squat toilet units for years, he said, but in the wake of the refugee crisis in Germany, the challenge was to come up with a combined Western-style/squat toilet. He has already received queries from organizations that run refugee shelters.

His firm specializes in portable toilets, which are currently in high demand for use in emergency refugee shelters. "Generally, about 60 percent of our toilets are found on construction sites, and about 30 percent are used at special events like fairs and concerts," he said. Equipping refugee shelters is a new development that's bound to be "temporary," he said, adding that he saw a market for the new portable squat toilet abroad and at construction sites, which often employ foreigners.

Fliegenschmidt's design is actually surprisingly simple. It's a regular Western-style toilet bowl with a sizeable squatting platform to the left and the right.

Different body hygiene standards

Toilet routines differ, and Islamic culture has detailed toilet etiquette.

Islamic countries traditionally use water to wash. The myreligionislam.com website lists 20 rules and practices "to be followed when answering the call of nature." One rule stipulates using fingers to clean oneself, and "if there are still traces," washing them with water. Cleaning the private parts "with stones and similar materials" is regarded as an "acceptable substitute for cleaning them with water."

Other rules forbid talking, singing, smoking or reading the paper while on the toilet. People are also advised to enter the bathroom left foot first, while exiting with the right.

An esoteric reference from his stories of hunting in Africa. Hemingway developed peritonitis presumably from a native, tough-guy diet of ill-cooked meat and ingestion of unclean water which exposed him to a number of parasitic micro-organisms.

Reportedly, while in-the-bush he developed a ritual of squat and purge followed by a rinse and tuck of the distended colon.

Well read Grom, well read.

[Iran Press TV] Uganda's main opposition candidate in the presidential election has been briefly detained on the day of voting.

An aide to Kizza Besigye said the opposition leader was tossed in the calaboose

earlier on Thursday as he was investigating alleged ballot-stuffing in a house run by the intelligence agencies in Naguru, a suburb of the capital Kampala.

Shawn Mubiru said Besigye was taken to an unknown location and police did not respond to questions about the detention.

According to Besigye's lawyer, Ladislaus Rwakafuzi, he was later "released without charge and taken home," in line with a previous trend of detention and release.

Besigye was incumbent Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's main challenger in the election which was marred by accusations that the government deliberately delayed the transfer of voting materials to polling stations in a bid to frustrate pro-Besigye voters.

Polling stations either opened late or never opened on Thursday due to the late arrival voting papers with officials saying those closed centers will be opened Friday.

Russian TV Trashed Michelle Obama Last Night
[OBSERVER] On Sunday, Russian TV host Dmitry Kiselyov, who enjoys the largest audience among news programs in Russia, announced in his prime-time program News of the Week the launch of a new documentary, whose goal would be to expose corruption in the U.S.--as opposed to the familiar story in Russian he's sick and tired of talking about.

"This is not fair--to forget about American corruption," he declared, "about how they get fat on the money of American taxpayers there."

The title of the film--Emperor Obama--says it all, but the trailer, lasting more than 10 minutes, was shown anyway.

The first victim of attack was the American first lady.

"The information on our clients is strictly confidential," says the Villa Padierna hotel manager to a young and beautiful female news hound. "But I can confirm that Michelle Obama really stayed in our hotel. She was our most famous guest. Since then, we named one of our villas after her. Villa Obama has three floors, two bedrooms, one swimming pool and a big living room--here is Villa Obama."

"On the fourth of August 2010," the manager continues, as the beautiful young news hound walks around the luxurious and spacious rooms, "the U.S. president celebrated his 49th birthday, and the very same day his spouse, Michelle Obama, arrived for her vacation in Spain. Here is her room." Not ceremoniously, the news hound touches the silk sheets and very rare travertine marble. "Here are the official numbers: for the week starting August 4, 131,000 Americans were fired, losing their incomes and jobs. At that moment, Michelle Obama was on vacation, and the taxpayers were paying $6,000 a night for this hotel suit."

Then, the first lady is shown walking outside out in the Spanish heat. "Michelle! Michelle!" thunders the crowd.

Morocco: Heavily armed Terror Cell Planning Attacks Dismantled
Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation has dismantled a heavily armed 10-member terror cell that was active in Essaouira, Meknes and Sidi Kacem, the Interior Ministry announced on Thursday.

A French national was among the cell members, the Ministry said, adding that the anti-terrorist brigade of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ,) called Morocco’s FBI, were able to nab the ringleader of the cell at a residence at El Jadida, a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, to the south of Casablanca.

During the cell dismantling operation, the BCIJ forces seized sizeable quantity of weapons including four pistols, a rifle equipped with viewfinder, and 13 tear-gas bombs.

The cell reportedly was planning attacks against some strategic institutions at the request of the Islamic State.

Mobster gang terrorising Benghazi district hit
The law finally caught up with a mafia-type gang which has brought terror to Benghazi’s West Salmani district for months. Two members of the family gang were arrested when the army and the counter-crime agency (CCA) today attacked and captured their home in which an arsenal of weapons was discovered. In the operation, however, three members of the gang managed to escape, including its leader, and two members of the CCA were wounded in the assault, one seriously.

The other took a shot in the leg and is being treated in Jalaa hospital.

It is alleged that the gang had managed carve out a fiefdom for themselves in West Salami, carrying out robberies and kidnappings with impunity, and demanding 10 dinars a day from local shops as protection money and threatening anyone who refused to pay. It is also claimed they they set up roadblocks in the area, robbing drivers whom they stopped. One local man told the Libya Herald today that he had been stopped at one and had his car plus LD 1,900 in cash stolen.

There are also reports of people who refused to cooperate being murdered in cold blood.

Matters came to head yesterday when locals decided to take the matter into their own hands after one of the gang had gone to a local gold shop, demanded money and had then beaten up the owner who had refused to pay. His family joined forces with that of another man reportedly shot dead by the gang a couple of weeks ago when he refused to hand his car to them.

Following a small shootout at the gang’s home, army and CCA units arrived and surrounded the place, ordering the family to surrender. They refused and in the end, early this morning, the house was stormed.

Questions are now being asked how the family managed to act with impunity for so long, and why the army or CCA did nothing about them. There are allegations that they were being protected.

Tonight though, although three members managed to escape, there is a sense of peace in West Salmani.

ISIS artillery hammers Kurd held villages in northern Syria
KOBANE – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Thursday launched a renewed offensive on Kurdish villages in the vicinity of Kobane in northern Syria. ISIS militants bombed a number of Kurdish villages with dozens of mortar shells, causing casualties among civilians.

“At least 13 people were killed and dozens more wounded in the ISIS-led bombardment on Thursday,” rights activist Salah al-Kurdi told ARA News in Kobane.

The radical group has bombed the villages of Qubbah, Jaada, Tel Abar, Nasiriyah and Zor Maghar with dozens of mortar shells fired from its headquarters in Jarablus, west of Kobane.

“ISIS tries to terrorize civilians in Kobane by carrying out such attacks,” the source said.

In the meantime, Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) responded to the offensive by targeting ISIS headquarters near Jarablus on the border with Turkey. Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, YPG spokesman Hebun Osman said: “Subsequent to the terror offensive on western Kobane, our forces hit ISIS headquarters near Jarablus with heavy artillery shells and rockets.”

The Kurdish official added that the ISIS-led attacks stopped on Thursday evening after the YPG bombed several vehicles and a security center for the group.

Turkish artillery hits northern Syrian villages
AFRIN – Turkey’s military bombed the Kurdish city of Afrin and nearby villages in northwestern Syria, causing casualties among civilians, local sources reported on Thursday.

Turkish army units stationed at the border with Syria have launched an offensive on the Kurdish areas in the northwestern countryside of Aleppo, targeting Afrin and the surrounding villages with heavy artillery shelling.

“The Turkish bombardment caused ten casualties among civilians in Afrin,” member of the Democratic Council in Afrin, Rezan Hiddo, told ARA News.

The attack, which took place in the midnight on Thursday, hit residential neighborhoods in Afrin and its suburbs.

“Rescue teams are still looking for survivors under the rubble of damaged houses,” the source reported.

“We appeal to the international community to intervene and stop the Turkish offensive on the Kurdish region in Syria,” he said.

Afrin is under the control of Kurdish forces from the People’s Protection Units (YPG). The city and its countryside have sheltered thousands of displaced people from war-torn Aleppo.

The Turkish bombardment has also reached the villages of Deir Ballout, Hammam, Firera, Hasna, Sanar and Hakjeh –administratively linked to Afrin. Dozens of civilian casualties, including children, were reported in the heavy artillery shelling by the Turkish army on Thursday.

This comes just few days after Turkey’s military hit Kurdish fighting positions in the northern countryside of Aleppo, especially after the YPG and allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) recaptured large areas from the Turkey-backed Islamist rebels.

Earlier this week, Kurdish fighters of the YPG and allied rebels of Jaish al-Thuwar –both are members of the U.S.-backed SDF– had seized control of the Menagh air base and a number of villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo subsequent to fierce clashes with Islamist rebel groups. The Turkish army has bombed with heavy artillery several YPG-held villages near Azaz and Afrin over the past few days, including Menagh, Miremin, Malkiyah, Meranaz, Tannab and Kashtaar. The Turkish operations coincided with mortar shelling by Syria’s wing of al-Qaeda, Nusra Front, on the Kurdish headquarters in the same areas.
