Appeals court dismisses Rick Perry's criminal case
[Statesman] The state's top criminal court on Wednesday threw out the remaining criminal charge against Rick Perry, sparing the former governor from trial and a potential prison sentence on a felony charge of misusing the power of his office.
a political hit via Travis County Democrats
The charge, related to Perry's 2013 threat to veto money for Travis County prosecutors in an attempt to force Drunken Assh0le District Attorney Rosemary "Do you know who I AM?" Lehmberg from office, violated the Texas Constitution's separation of powers provision by improperly limiting the governor's veto authority, the Court of Criminal Appeals said in a ruling from which two of eight judges dissented.

"The constitution does not purport to impose any restriction on the veto power based on the reason for the veto, and it does not purport to allow any other substantive limitations to be placed on the use of a veto," said the opinion by Presiding Judge Sharon Keller.

The state's highest criminal court ordered the remaining criminal charge against Rick Perry to be dropped Wednesday.
The damage is done
"The governor's power to exercise a veto may not be circumscribed by the Legislature, by the courts, or by district attorneys," Keller wrote. "When the only act that is being prosecuted is a veto, then the prosecution itself violates separation of powers."

The court also spared Perry from a second felony charge of coercion of a public official, ruling that a lower court correctly tossed out the law last summer as unconstitutionally vague and a violation of free speech rights.

French special forces waging 'secret war' in Libya
[Rooters] French special forces and intelligence commandos are engaged in covert operations against Islamic State militants in Libya in conjunction with the United States and Britain, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on Wednesday.

It said President Francois Hollande had authorized "unofficial military action" by both an elite armed forces unit and the covert action service of the DGSE intelligence agency in the conflict-ridden North African state, which has two rival governments and largely ungoverned desert spaces.

What Le Monde called "France's secret war in Libya" involved occasional targeted strikes against leaders of the ultra-radical Islamist group, prepared by discreet action on the ground, to try to slow its growth in Libya.

The defense ministry declined comment on the substance of Le Monde's story but a source close to Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said he had ordered an investigation into "breaches of national defense secrecy" to identify the sources of the report.

Given Anti-US US POTUS Obama + the ANti-US OWG-NWO Globalist agenda, IMO 'TIS MORE CORRECT TO SAY THAT THE BAMMER + ALIGNED ANTI-US US GLOBIES ARE INTENTIONALLY = POLITELY/COVERTLY "UNWILLING" TO PREVENT IN THE NAME OF OWG + OWG AFRICAN UNION [AU].

Put another way - USA/POTUS OBAMA > D *** NG IT, ITS THE OWG AFRICAN UNION'S = AU'S JOB, NOT THE OWG NORTH AMERICAN UNION'S = NAU'S!

China deploys fighter jets to contested South China Sea island
[Wash Times] In the latest case of Chinese contempt for the U.S., Beijing reportedly deployed fighter jets on a disputed island in the South China Sea on the eve of a Tuesday meeting with America's top diplomat.

Citing "two U.S. officials" who spoke on condition of anonymity, Fox News reported that U.S. intelligence had spotted Chinese J-11 and JH-7s fighter jets on Woody Island.

China had deployed surface-to-air missiles on the same island last week, but placing modern attack aircraft is a significant upgrade and, according to Fox a "dramatic escalation" in the dispute over islands also claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Fox News report came Tuesday as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Washington for meetings with top U.S. officials. His scheduled visit to the Pentagon was canceled but a meeting with Secretary of State John F. Kerry was still a go for Tuesday afternoon.

Besides building military facilities on the tiny Spratly Islands, China also is building artificial "islands" to host advanced radar installations.

Top Dem warns of 'TPP car,' Mexican-made of Chinese parts, sold in U.S.
[Wash Examiner] The controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal between the U.S. and 11 other nations could spark a new wave of U.S. auto and auto parts makers fleeing to Mexico, a leading Democratic trade expert in the House is warning.

According to Michigan Rep. Sander Levin, the result would be that Americans eventually may be forced to buy "TPP cars or trucks," assembled in Mexico and largely made of foreign parts.

Levin, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, came out in opposition to the deal last week. He said it includes no demands that Mexico let workers unionize or that it increase automaker wages above the $8-an-hour average.

Trump wins! What goes to Vegas, may not stay in Vegas.
[Rooters] Businessman Donald Trump inched closer to becoming the Republican Party’s presidential candidate Tuesday with a victory in the Nevada caucuses, his third win in four early-nominating contests.

Trump’s victory, which was quickly called by broadcast networks and later affirmed by the state Republican Party, showed not only that he has undeniable momentum, but that he holds broad geographic appeal.

After coming second in Iowa, in America’s midwest, he went on to capture primaries in New Hampshire in the northeast and South Carolina in the south. Nevada was the first western contest.

“If you listen to the pundits, we weren’t expected to win too much, and now we’re winning, winning, winning the country,” Trump said at a victory rally in Las Vegas.

Trump is expected to take the bulk of Nevada’s 30 delegates, which would give him more than 80 before February ends, and dwarf the tallies of his closest rivals, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

Canadian Judge Strikes Down Scholarship For Straight, White Men
[Daily Caller] A Canadian judge has struck down a recently deceased doctor's plan to create a scholarship for heterosexual white men on the grounds it is "contrary to public policy."

Radiologist Victor Priebe died on New Year's Day 2015, and included a provision in his will to establish a scholarship with an unusual stipulation. The provision requests the Royal Trust Corporation of Canada, his trustee, to establish a scholarship fund targeted at single, straight, white men who intend to study science. The scholarship also requests the recipient not play collegiate sports and that they not show an aversion to manual labor.

Priebe's will also sought to create a similar scholarship a single woman who "is not a feminist or a lesbian."

But Priebe's will has now been struck down in court by a judge who says it is too offensive to take effect.

A Castro brother finally checks out.
HAVANA (Reuters) - Ramon Castro, the older brother of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro and current President Raul Castro, died on Tuesday at age 91, Cuban official media reported.

Castro, who kept a low profile in recent years, died in Havana and his cremated remains were to be taken to Biran, the rural town in eastern Cuba where the Castro brothers were born, the official website Cubadebate said.

Although aiding the guerrilla movement led by his brothers that seized power in 1959, Castro did not take up arms. He later served as an agricultural adviser, never wielding the same authority as Fidel, 89, and Raul, 84.
No date provided on memorial service. Upcoming 20-21 March visit to Cuba by the Champ undoubtedly a coincidence.

Simple Chart Reveals Troubling Relationship Between Champ's Policies And Particular US Jobs
[Daily Caller] The mining and coal industries lost tens of thousands of jobs last year alone according to federal data, mostly due to federal regulations and low-priced natural gas.

Mark Perry, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, aggregated data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics into a chart.

The chart provides no racial or political demographics, but I suspect we could hazard a guess.

#2  WV and Kentucky are especially hard hit. Government tax revenue is gone. Well over 38 million for WV. alone. Small towns are being abandoned. Bankrupts galore among coal mining operations and all support industries. So what does government do, raise taxes. A worker in the mine could take home $2000. after taxes. Now what is his take home on a low wage part time job. Women and children will get government aid. Men will just have to move along. Prime target for China to come in and buy up everything cheap. Perhaps our own garden variety slickers.

MH17 - Potential Suspects and Witnesses from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade
[Bellingcat] This report, MH17: Potential Suspects and Witnesses from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, presents information regarding the Russian brigade that we believe provided, and possibly operated, the Buk-M1 missile launcher that downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. In this post, we will summarize the role of the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade and “Buk 3×2” in the downing of MH17 before providing a summary of the report. Consumer Reports List: Ford F-150 Is Best Pickup
Blah blah blah
Among various categories, Ford Motor's F-150 was named best pickup truck with a score of 76/77. It's also the top selling vehicle of any type in the U.S. for more than 30 years running.

"Is aluminum body construction macho enough for a big truck? You bet. By eschewing traditional steel body panels, Ford created a pickup that weighs less, enabling it to be quick off the line and fuel-efficient," Consumer Reports said in the report.

Georgia State House Votes To Allow Guns On Public College Campuses
Concealed handguns would be allowed on Georgia's public college campuses under a measure that cleared the state's House of Representatives and now heads to the Senate over the objections of university leaders.

The bill, which was approved by the Republican-dominated House on Monday, would let anyone 21 or over with a concealed weapons permit take their handguns on public college campuses but not into dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses or sporting events.

"The House took a very clear position that the Second Amendment does not stop at the edge of a college campus," Speaker David Ralston, a Republican, said following passage of the bill, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

A Democratic opponent of the bill, State Representative Robert Trammell, said in a phone interview on Tuesday that he believed the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment allowed handguns to be barred from "sensitive" places such as college campuses.

"In addition to the question of public safety, a weapon in a classroom environment is antithetical to the idea and mission of post-secondary education," Trammell said.

Supporters of the measure have cited several recent armed robberies of students in the library at Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta as evidence that students should be allowed to arm themselves.

But Trammell said there is no data showing that campuses would be safer if students were allowed to carry weapons.

The Georgia Board of Regents, which governs the state's colleges and universities, opposes the bill, spokesman Charles Sutlive said.

The measure's chances in the Republican-controlled state Senate are unclear. A similar "campus carry" provision failed in 2014 when senators stripped it from a broader gun bill.

A spokeswoman for Republican Governor Nathan Deal said the governor does not comment on pending legislation, giving no indication of whether he supports the bill.

Last week, the president of the University of Texas reluctantly approved plans that would allow licensed concealed handgun holders to bring pistols into classrooms, after the Texas legislature last year approved a campus carry law similar to the one proposed in Georgia.

Georgia's bill covers only public colleges. Texas allows private colleges to opt out of campus carry, and most of the best-known private schools have.

China-Japan-Koreas
Three Maps That Outline North Korea's Military Might
Maps/charts/etc. at link.

Full report here.

The US Office of the Secretary of the Defense has released its annual report to Congress on North Korea's military, and the findings are chilling. Included in the report are the following three maps, which outline North Korea's military might.

North Korea's ground forces make up the primary thrust of the rogue nation's military. Nearly 70% of its ground forces are forward deployed to within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of the South Korean border.

The ground forces are a mix of infantry corps, which are predominantly comprised of regular and light-infantry units. In general, these forces are housed in fortified underground facilities facing toward South Korea.

In addition to infantry, the ground corps also has large armor and artillery corps. Although corps make use of old technology, their forward-deployed nature remains a threat to South Korea. North Korea's artillery, in particular, is worrisome as the long-range cannons and rockets are capable of hitting South Korea's capital, Seoul, from over the border in the event of a war.

But aside from North Korea's special forces, its ground forces are generally underfed, ill-equipped, and poorly trained.

North Korea's second-largest military branch is its air force. Like Pyongyang's ground forces, these airframes are largely based against the South -- 50% of North Korea's air force is within 62 miles of the South Korean border.

Although North Korea maintains a large air force, its fleet is estimated at having 1,300 aircraft, consisting almost entirely of legacy Soviet airframes. Pyongyang's most capable aircraft are MiG-29s that were likely procured in the late 1980s from the Soviet Union.

The hermit kingdom also has a few US-made MD-500 helicopters that were obtained in the 1980s by circumventing export controls that are capable of ground-attack missions. But the majority of North Korea's air assets are aging and the country has taken the route of improving its ground forces and hardening the country against air strikes than trying to modernize its air force.

The smallest of the military branches, Pyongyang's navy is also largely based against South Korea, with 50% of the navy's assets within 62 miles of the border. The navy is largely comprised of aging patrol boats, submarines, and air-cushioned hovercraft and amphibious vessels.

Of these assets, North Korea's submarine fleet is the most potentially dangerous. Although extremely old, the fleet of an estimated 70 submarines are capable of hiding around the Korean coast and harassing or possibly sinking South Korean vessels.

Additionally, in 2015 North Korea debuted a new submarine that it said was domestically built and capable of firing a ballistic missile.

But the three maps do not show North Korea's continued drive to create a nuclear-weapons and ballistic-missile program. The following chart highlights the known number of missiles in North Korea's missile forces.

The largest confirmed threat that North Korea is known to possess is the KN-08 missile.

It would be able to target portions of the West Coast of the continental US. Additionally, the missile is believed to be able to carry miniaturized nuclear warheads, should Pyongyang develop such a capability, and it's road mobile, making it difficult for the US to track.

China Can Un-Stealth U.S. Fighter Jets
China appears to be building a new high-frequency radar on an artificial feature in the Spratly Islands that could allow Beijing to track even the stealthiest American warplanes, including the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and even the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit. The Center for Strategic and International Studies has acquired satellite evidence of the construction.

"Placement of a high frequency radar on Cuarteron Reef would significantly bolster China's ability to monitor surface and air traffic coming north from the Malacca Straits and other strategically important channels," reads a report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "Improved radar coverage is an important piece of the puzzle--along with improved air defenses and greater reach for Chinese aircraft--toward China's goals of establishing effective control over the sea and airspace throughout the nine-dash line."

Moreover, the Washington-based think tank has a specific reason to believe that the new radar is a high-frequency set. "Two probable radar towers have been built on the northern portion of the feature, and a number of 65-foot (20-meter) poles have been erected across a large section of the southern portion," reads the report. "These poles could be a high-frequency radar installation, which would significantly bolster China's ability to monitor surface and air traffic across the southern portion of the South China Sea."

While the system is called a high-frequency (HF) radar--that's bit of a misnomer. HF radars actually operate on low frequencies relative to the VHF, UHF, L, S, C, X and Ku bands, which are more typically used by military radars. These low frequencies have waves that are several meters long and, consequently, most stealth aircraft show up on HF radar. In order to defeat low frequency radar, a stealth aircraft has to eliminate features like fins, which is why the flying-wing shape is the best way available to avoid detection. That is because there is an omnidirectional resonance effect that occurs when a feature on an aircraft--such as a tail-fin--is less than eight times the size of a particular frequency wavelength. As a result, there is a step change in radar cross section once that threshold is exceeded. Since every stealth aircraft currently in America's fleet exceeds that threshold--even the B-2 is not large enough to avoid most HF radars--every U.S. aircraft would show up on the Chinese radar. Indeed--all stealth aircraft will show up at some frequency. That's just physics.

But it's not all bad news. While HF radar can detect and even track stealth aircraft to a degree, it is not anywhere near precise enough to guide a weapon. The problem with HF-band radars is that they have a very long pulse width and a very low pulse repetition frequency [PRF]. That means HF are very poor at accurately determining range, altitude and precise direction. Indeed the radar resolution cells could be several miles wide. The best an HF radar can do is cue other sensors to search a volume of airspace or direct fighters toward a roughly defined search area.

In the case of a war, the Pentagon would have to eliminate those radars before launching a strike--similar to how Army AH-64A Apache gunships eliminated Iraq's low-frequency search radars during Operation Desert Storm.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
IS Tightens Grip On Syrian Government Road To Aleppo
Is this 0bean's idea of "contained"?
Islamic State fighters were reported to have tightened their grip on a Syrian government supply route to Aleppo on Tuesday as the army battled to retake the road as part of its campaign to seize the city.

As Damascus accepted a U.S.-Russian plan for a "cessation of hostilities" between the government and rebels due to take effect on Saturday, heavy Russian air strikes were also said to be targeting one of the last roads into opposition-held parts of Aleppo.

The plan announced by the United States and Russia on Monday is the result of intensive diplomacy to end the five-year-long war. But rebels say the exclusion of Islamic State and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front will give the government a pretext to keep attacking them because its fighters are widely spread in opposition-held areas.

The Syrian government, backed by Russian air strikes since September, said it would coordinate with Russia to define which groups and areas would be included in what it called a "halt to combat operations". Damascus also warned that continued foreign support for the rebels could wreck the agreement.

The Russian intervention has turned the momentum President Bashar al-Assad's way in a conflict that has splintered Syria and mostly reduced his control to the big cities of the west and the coast.

Damascus, backed by ground forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards, is making significant advances, including near the city of Aleppo which is split between rebel- and government-control.

The Islamic State assault has targeted a desert road which the government has been forced to use to reach Aleppo because insurgents still control the main highway further west.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reports the war using a network of sources on the ground, said Islamic State fighters had seized the village of Khanaser on the road, which remained closed for a second day. A Syrian military source told Reuters army operations were continuing to repel the attack.

Islamic State, which controls swathes of eastern and central Syria, differs from rebels fighting Assad in western Syria because its priority is expanding its own "caliphate" rather than reforming Syria through Assad's removal from power.

The group has escalated attacks on government targets in recent days. On Sunday, it staged some of the deadliest suicide bomb attacks of the war, killing around 150 people in government-controlled Damascus and Homs.

A U.S.-Russian statement said the two countries and others would work together to delineate the territory held by IS, Nusra Front, and other militant groups excluded from the truce.

In Geneva, U.N. spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said: "This is a cessation of hostilities that we hope will take force very quickly and hope provide breathing space for intra-Syrian talks to resume."

Fawzi said there were plans for additional aid deliveries to opposition-held areas blockaded by government forces near Damascus, including the Eastern Ghouta.

RIGHT TO RESPOND

Damascus stressed the importance of sealing the borders and halting foreign support for armed groups and "preventing these organizations from strengthening their capabilities or changing their positions, in order to avoid what may lead to wrecking this agreement".

The Syrian military reserved the right to "respond to any breach by these groups against Syrian citizens or against its armed forces", a government statement added.

The main, Saudi-backed Syrian opposition body said late on Monday it "consented to" the international efforts, but said acceptance of a truce was conditional on an end to blockades of rebel-held areas, free access for humanitarian aid, a release of detainees, and a halt to air strikes against civilians.

The opposition High Negotiations Committee also said it did not expect Assad, Russia, or Iran to cease hostilities.

The powerful Kurdish YPG militia, which is currently fighting both Islamic State and rebels near Aleppo, is "seriously examining" the U.S.-Russian plan to decide whether to take part, a YPG official told Reuters. "There is so far no decision," said the official, declining to be identified because he is not an official YPG spokesman.

The YPG, an ally of the United States in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, has recently received Russian air support during an offensive against rebels near Aleppo.

Britain said on Tuesday it had seen disturbing evidence that Syrian Kurdish forces were coordinating with the Syrian government and the Russian air force.

Turkey, a major sponsor of the insurgency against Assad, said it welcomed plans for the halt to fighting but was not optimistic about a positive outcome to talks on a political transition.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Ankara had reservations about actions that Russian forces could take against Syria's moderate opposition and civilians. Turkey is worried about the expansion of YPG influence in Syria, fearing it could fuel separatism among its own Kurdish population.

A rebel fighter in the Aleppo area said he did not expect the ceasefire plan to work.

"The Russian jets will not stop bombing on the pretext of Nusra and the Islamic State organization, and will keep bombing civilians and the rest of the factions with this pretext," said Abu al-Baraa al-Hamawi, a fighter with the Ajnad al-Sham group.

"Everything that is happening is pressure to extend the life of the regime," he told Reuters from the Aleppo area.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Two teens arrested in attack on Marine at D.C. McDonald's
[USAToday] Two teens have been arrested in connection to the assault and robbery of a veteran Marine sergeant, D.C. police said.

Police said one 17-year-old male and one 17-year-old female were involved in the attack. The male was charged with aggravated assault and the female was charged with robbery.

Christopher Marquez, a Bronze Star recipient, who served in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2011, told police he was assaulted while eating at a McDonald's.

Marquez said he believes the February 12th attack was racially motivated.

"The kids were asking me if I think that black lives mattered," Marquez told the Marine Corps Times. "I was ignoring them, just because I felt intimidated. I felt how they approached me, it was very hostile. I felt they were really trying to intimidate me and just trying to start a confrontation with me."

One of the suspects allegedly hit Marquez with a gun after calling him a racist, according to a police report.

The suspects took Marquez' wallet, identification, credit cards, debit card and about $400 in cash, the report says.

Police say a third suspect was involved in the assault.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Why Some Civil War Soldiers Glowed in the Dark
By the spring of 1862, a year into the American Civil War, Major General Ulysses S. Grant had pushed deep into Confederate territory along the Tennessee River. In early April, he was camped at Pittsburg Landing, near Shiloh, Tennessee, waiting for Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's army to meet up with him.

On the morning of April 6, Confederate troops based out of nearby Corinth, Mississippi, launched a surprise offensive against Grant's troops, hoping to defeat them before the second army arrived. Grant's men, augmented by the first arrivals from the Ohio, managed to hold some ground, though, and establish a battle line anchored with artillery. Fighting continued until after dark, and by the next morning, the full force of the Ohio had arrived and the Union outnumbered the Confederates by more than 10,000.

The Union troops began forcing the Confederates back, and while a counterattack stopped their advance it did not break their line. Eventually, the Southern commanders realized they could not win and fell back to Corinth until another offensive in August (for a more detailed explanation of the battle, see this animated history).

All told, the fighting at the Battle of Shiloh left more than 16,000 soldiers wounded and more 3,000 dead, and neither federal or Confederate medics were prepared for the carnage.

The bullet and bayonet wounds were bad enough on their own, but soldiers of the era were also prone to infections. Wounds contaminated by shrapnel or dirt became warm, moist refuges for bacteria, which could feast on a buffet of damaged tissue. After months marching and eating field rations on the battlefront, many soldiers' immune systems were weakened and couldn't fight off infection on their own. Even the army doctors couldn't do much; microorganisms weren't well understood and the germ theory of disease and antibiotics were still a few years away. Many soldiers died from infections that modern medicine would be able to nip in the bud.

A Bright Spot

Some of the Shiloh soldiers sat in the mud for two rainy days and nights waiting for the medics to get around to them. As dusk fell the first night, some of them noticed something very strange: their wounds were glowing, casting a faint light into the darkness of the battlefield. Even stranger, when the troops were eventually moved to field hospitals, those whose wounds glowed had a better survival rate and had their wounds heal more quickly and cleanly than their unilluminated brothers-in-arms. The seemingly protective effect of the mysterious light earned it the nickname "Angel's Glow."

In 2001, almost one hundred and forty years after the battle, seventeen-year-old Bill Martin was visiting the Shiloh battlefield with his family. When he heard about the glowing wounds, he asked his mom - a microbiologist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service who had studied luminescent bacteria that lived in soil - about it.

"So you know, he comes home and, 'Mom, you're working with a glowing bacteria. Could that have caused the glowing wounds?'" Martin told Science Netlinks. "And so, being a scientist, of course I said, 'Well, you can do an experiment to find out.'"

And that's just what Bill did.

He and his friend, Jon Curtis, did some research on both the bacteria and the conditions during the Battle of Shiloh. They learned that Photorhabdus luminescens, the bacteria that Bill's mom studied and the one he thought might have something to do with the glowing wounds, live in the guts of parasitic worms called nematodes, and the two share a strange lifecycle. Nematodes hunt down insect larvae in the soil or on plant surfaces, burrow into their bodies, and take up residence in their blood vessels. There, they puke up the P. luminescens bacteria living inside them. Upon their release, the bacteria, which are bioluminescent and glow a soft blue, begin producing a number of chemicals that kill the insect host and suppress and kill all the other microorganisms already inside it. This leaves P. luminescens and their nematode partner to feed, grow and multiply without interruptions.

As the worms and the bacteria eat and eat and the insect corpse is more or less hollowed out, the nematode eats the bacteria. This isn't a double cross, but part of the move to greener pastures. The bacteria re-colonize the nematode's guts so they can hitch a ride as it bursts forth from the corpse in search of a new host.

The next meal shouldn't be hard to find either, since P. luminescens already sent them an invitation to the party. Just before they got got back in their nematode taxi, P. luminescens were at critical mass in the insect corpse, and scientists think that that many glowing bacteria attract other insects to the body and make the nematode's transition to a new host much easier.

A Good Light

Looking at historical records of the battle, Bill and Jon figured out that the weather and soil conditions were right for both P. luminescens and their nematode partners. Their lab experiments with the bacteria, however, showed that they couldn't live at human body temperature, making the soldiers' wounds an inhospitable environment. Then they realized what some country music fans already knew: Tennessee in the spring is green and cool. Nighttime temperatures in early April would have been low enough for the soldiers who were out there in the rain for two days to get hypothermia, lowering their body temperature and giving P. luminescens a good home.

Based on the evidence for P. luminescens's presence at Shiloh and the reports of the strange glow, the boys concluded that the bacteria, along with the nematodes, got into the soldiers' wounds from the soil. This not only turned their wounds into night lights, but may have saved their lives. The chemical cocktail that P. luminescens uses to clear out its competition probably helped kill off other pathogens that might have infected the soldiers' wounds. Since neither P. luminescens nor its associated nematode species are very infectious to humans, they would have soon been cleaned out by the immune system themselves (which is not to say you should be self-medicating with bacteria; P. luminescens infections can occur, and can result in some nasty ulcers). The soldiers shouldn't have been thanking the angels so much as the microorganisms.

Weapons seized, 19 arrested in overnight West Bank raids, 2 houses destroyed
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian youths reportedly injured in festivities with soldiers; army says 5 Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, operatives detained

IDF troops placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
over a dozen Paleostinian terror suspects and uncovered two weapons caches during raids across the West Bank, the army said Tuesday morning.

A total of 19 Paleostinian suspects were arrested, including five men described as Hamas members. Seven of those arrested are suspected of direct involvement in recent attacks on civilians and security forces, the IDF said.

During the raids soldiers seized weapons including M16 rifles, handguns, hand grenades and combat gear presumed to be held in preparation for terrorist attacks in two caches in Nablus and near Jenin.

The suspects were transferred to the Shin Bet security agency for interrogation.

Several Paleostinians clashed with soldiers during operations in the West Bank town of Nablus, according to Paleostinian news site Wafa.

Eight people were reportedly injured by rubber bullets fired at the youths.

The report also said that one teenager was run over by a military vehicle patrolling the streets during the raids. The army confirmed soldiers had been in the city but did not release information about festivities.

The operations also included the army demolition of two homes belonging to the families of Paleostinians accused of carrying out twin deadly terror attacks in November.

IDF engineers accompanied by Border Police officers destroyed the homes of Raed Masalmeh, 36, in the West Bank village of Dura, near Hebron, and Mohammed Abdel Basset al-Kharoub, 24, in village of Dir Smat, also near Hebron, the military said in a statement.

Masalmeh admitted stabbing to death Reuven Aviram, 51, and 32-year-old Aharon Yesiav, and wounding a third person in an attack on Jewish worshipers at the Panorama office building in south Tel Aviv on November 19. He has been indicted for murder at Tel Aviv District Court.

Al-Kharoub killed three people and injured seven others the same day in a shooting attack at the Gush Etzion Junction.

Both attackers are in Israeli custody.

State police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said the charges were linked to a previous case involving an 18-year-old man, who newspaper reports identified as her husband.

"We will be alleging that the item that she had possession of was a knife and we will be alleging that the documents that we collected were related to that act also," Burn said.

"We have previously charged an 18-year-old male with matters relating to this particular act that we are talking about and those matters are also before the court."

Her arrest comes one month after her reported husband Sameh Bayda faced a Sydney court on three counts of collecting documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, reportedly including advice on carrying out a stabbing and making a bomb.

Last October, a 15-year-old boy rubbed out a civilian employee outside police headquarters in western Sydney before being killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers.

Burn said the investigation was ongoing and "if there are other people involved, we will put them before the courts also".

IS, armed men clash near Libyan capital, four dead
[GLOBALPOST] Four people were killed in festivities near the Libyan capital on Tuesday between the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group and fighters loyal to the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-based government, a local official said.

The four dead men were members of the Sabratha military council which backs the Fajr Libya militia alliance in control of the capital, said Hussein al-Dawadi, mayor of Sabratha, west of Tripoli.

Fajr Libya is a coalition of Islamist militias that backs the non-recognised parliament in Tripoli and which is battling IS jihadists who have spread their influence across Libya.

Last week a US air strike targeted an IS training camp in Sabratha, killing dozens of people.

The Pentagon said a senior IS operative behind attacks in Tunisia was probably among the dead, while Serbia said that two diplomats kidnapped in Libya were among those killed in the air strike.

Dawadi said that fighters from the Sabratha military council launched raids in the suburbs of the city on Tuesday searching for IS Lion of Islams.

During one assault on a farm in the Al-Nahda area festivities erupted in which four Sabratha military council fighters were killed, he added.

The Sabratha military council meanwhile posted a message on its Facebook page urging civilians and medical staff to mobilise and help them battle IS.

Electricity restored to capital Kabul after weeks of blackout
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The electricity of capital Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
was restored late on Monday evening after weeks of blackout following the destruction of electricity pylons in northern Baghlan province.

The officials in Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, Afghanistan's national power utility, said the technicians managed to repair the damaged pylons in Dand-e-Shahabuddin district of Baghlan after the area was cleared by the security forces.

The damaged lines were supplying almost half of power needed in capital Kabul from the neighboring Uzbekistan and were apparently damaged by the snuffies after the Afghan cops launched an operation in Dand-e-Ghori district of Baghlan late last month.

Libya Forces Make Key Benghazi Gains
[ALMANAR.LB] Forces loyal to Libya's internationally recognized government seized a key central neighborhood of second city Benghazi from krazed killer militias on Tuesday, the military said.

The advance came as Libya's parliament again failed to vote on a UN-backed unity government seen as a crucial step in ending years of political chaos and conflict in the North African state.

Special forces retook the Benghazi area of Lithi, which had been a stronghold for krazed killer fighters including the ISIL group, after days of fierce festivities.

#1  If there is no government who ordered the assault?

"The required quorum [89 members of parliament] was not reached, so the president of the chamber adjourned the session," said MP Mohamed al-Abbani.

Another parliamentarian, Ali Al-Qaidi, confirmed that "the necessary quorum was not reached, and the session for the vote was adjourned until next week".

They got something more important to do? No quorum, no paycheck would be my response.

Glad to hear that ISIL got their butts kicked.

She said every strike would be subject to an individual authorization request to the Italian government and that they would only be used as a "last resort".

She added: "To date the drones have not been used in armed operations and there have been no requests for them to be."

Tampa liquor store clerk terminates robber's merry thug life; second suspect implores feet, flees
[TBO] One of two men attempting to rob a Tampa liquor store was shot to death in an exchange of gunfire with the clerk late Sunday, police said.

Cody Bolesta, 20, was found fatally shot on the sidewalk near Cut Rate Liquors, at 3312 N. 15th St., in the V.M. Ybor neighborhood, police said.

Detectives are working to track down the other suspect, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

The store employee, 57-year-old Willie Morris, was not injured.

Bolesta and the other intruder entered the store at 10:49 p.m. wearing ski masks and hoodie, and they pointed guns at the clerk while demanding money, police said.

Morris pulled out a gun, and at least one of the intruders fired at him, police said. Morris also fired, striking Bolesta.

At this time, the fatality appears to be a case of self-defense, but the case will be presented to the State Attorney's Office for a final determination, police said.

Baby Blumenthal hoodwinks PEN Canada conference
For those who closely follow events in Israel and the rest of the Middle East, it is hard to imagine that there are people and organizations with no knowledge of the loathsome Max Blumenthal and his twisted obsession with demonizing Israel and lionizing Palestinian Arab terrorists.

One might be inclined to give slack to a writer-focused non-profit organization that wanted to hold an event on the difficulties of reporting from a war zone, to assume that Blumenthal, who recently published a book about the 2014 Gaza War, might be a sensible choice. His book, The 51 Day War: Ruin and Resistance in Gaza, sounds exactly like what Brendan de Caires, PEN Canada’s programs director, said they were seeking. But it turns out that Blumenthal’s claim to have seen the Gaza war first hand is overblown, while any belief in his objectivity as a reporter is wildly misplaced.

Not there for the war, and not an objective reporter — why is this man giving a talk on war reporting? A little digging reveals that PEN could not pull together the topic it preferred and then may not have done its own homework carefully enough. Let’s hope, anyway.

What's fuelling insurgency upsurge in Kashmir recently?
[Dhaka Tribune] A three-day heavy gunbattle in Kashmire that ended Monday claimed nine lives including three turbans, indicating a recent upsurge of Lion of Islam activities in the disputed region backed by radicalised holy warriors.

The attack began when gunnies shot at a bus carrying police reservists near Srinagar, Kashmire's summer capital, before breaking into a training institute. Three Indian army commandos, two coppers, a civilian and three gunnies have been killed in the fighting.

On February 20, gunnies attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in the Pampore area of Jammu & Kashmire (J&K) in which two personnel were killed and 13 others sustained serious injuries.

WikiLeaks: NSA Spied on UN's Ban Ki-Moon & Other World Leaders
[ALMANAR.LB] Wikileaks published a new trove of top secret documents revealing that the NSA spied on the private meetings of major world leaders, including UN chief Ban Ki-Moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
, as well as the prime ministers of Italia and the Zionist entity, Russia Today reported.

The National Security Agency (NSA) listened in on high-level meetings on climate change, global economics, and even "how to deal with [US President Barack] Obama," according to the new documents released by WikiLeaks.

"Today we showed that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's private meetings over how to save the planet from climate change were bugged by a country intent on protecting its largest oil companies," said WikiLeaks founder and editor Julian Assange about NSA activities.

Assange added that the UN will most likely react to these leaks.

"We previously published Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Daniel Webster ...
's orders that US diplomats were to steal the secretary general's DNA.
Why on earth would such a thing be wanted?
The US government has signed agreements with the UN that it will not engage in such conduct against the UN -- let alone its secretary general.

"It will be interesting to see the UN's reaction, because if the secretary general can be targeted without consequence, then everyone from world leader to street sweeper is at risk."

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea, US Delay Official Missile Shield Talks
[ALMANAR.LB] Washington and Seoul have postponed talks on deploying an advanced missile defense system opposed by Beijing, South Korea's defense ministry said Tuesday.

The allies had been set to sign an agreement Tuesday on setting up a joint working group to look into the roll-out of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD) against North Korea's growing missile threat.

"The related accord is in the final stages but has been postponed by a day or two because of last-minute negotiations," ministry front man Moon Sang-Gyun said.

The THAAD system fires anti-ballistic missiles into the sky to smash into enemy missiles either inside or outside the Earth's atmosphere during their final flight phase.US and South Korea flags

The interceptor missiles carry no warheads, instead relying on kinetic energy to destroy their targets.

More than two weeks ago, the allies announced their intention to begin talks on its deployment following Pyongyang's long-range ballistic missile launch on February 7 but negotiations to launch the Joint Working Group were protracted.

The delay comes as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Washington from Tuesday to meet his US counterpart John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry

for possible talks over the controversial defense system and North Korea.

China opposes the proposed deployment of THAAD, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying warning Monday that it should not be used as a front to "undermine China's own legitimate (security) interests".

UN aid convoys head to Syrian towns besieged by Syrian troops
U.N. aid convoys headed to two Syrian towns besieged by government forces on Tuesday to deliver life-saving food and medicine to some 30,000 people, a U.N. spokesman said.

The deliveries to the towns of Moadamiyeh and Kafr Batna, near Damascus, came after aid reached five besieged towns last week, part of a major push to reach civilians facing starvation.

“These are the first of what we hope to be a series of deliveries to meet the needs of people that humanitarian workers have not been able to reach for a long time,” said U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The convoys carried enough food and medical supplies to help some 20,000 people in Moadamiyeh and 10,000 in Kafr Batna, he said.

The humanitarian aid came a day after the United States and Russia agreed on a cessation of hostilities as of Saturday that could pave the way to more deliveries.

The United Nations is calling on all sides to lift starvation sieges across Syria, where it estimates that 487,000 people live, although some non-governmental organizations say the figure is much higher.

Last week, 114 trucks loaded with food and other basic goods reached 80,000 people in five besieged areas.

The United Nations is calling for “unconditional, unimpeded and sustained access” to all hard-to-reach areas, said Dujarric.

More than 260,000 people have died in Syria’s conflict, which began in March 2011 with anti-government protests but has since imploded into a multi-sided proxy war.

ISIS seizes MSRs, towns in Aleppo
ARA News

ALEPPO – Subsequent to clashes with Syrian regime’s army forces, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) seized control of three towns and a key supply route in Syria’s northern Aleppo province on Tuesday.

ISIS militants have reportedly captured the Khanasser-Ithrayya road –a key supply line for the Syrian army in the southern countryside of Aleppo.

“The Khnasser Ithrayya route was a main supply line for the regime’s troops fighting in Aleppo. The army relied on this line to receive military reinforcements from Hama to support its forces inside Aleppo,” media activist Abdulrahman Taha told ARA News.

“This progress could help ISIS besiege major positions for the Syrian army in the province,” Taha said.

Also on Tuesday, ISIS fighters seized control of three towns in southern Aleppo, including Hammam, Dreham and Raheb.

“After fierce clashes with the regime’s forces, ISIS was able to seize the three towns and a large deal of ammunition,” the source reported.

At least 24 Syrian soldiers were killed and dozens more wounded in the ISIS attacks south Aleppo. The militants have also seized three tanks and more than ten machine guns, according to Amaq agency.

al-Nusra troops die by the dozens in Aleppo
ARA News

ALEPPO – Militant fighters of al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda wing in Syria, launched on Tuesday a mortar attack on the Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo, causing casualties among civilians, local sources reported.

“Nusra militants fired dozens of mortar shells on a crowded market in central Sheikh Maqsoud. At least two civilians were killed and 13 others wounded in the bombardment,” rights activist Haytham Mahmoud told ARA News in Aleppo.

Sheikh Maqsoud is under the control of the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Subsequent to the attack, clashes broke out between the Kurdish fighters and Nusra militants in the vicinity of Sheikh Maqsoud on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to ARA News, YPG spokesman Habun Osman said that the clashes centered in the eastern part of the district, “where Nusra terrorists were trying to take over a security checkpoint for the YPG”.

“The YPG used heavy machine guns in the clashes, killing six Nusra militants and wounding four others. The group has then withdrawn from the area,” he said, adding that three YPG fighters were injured in the clashes and subsequently transferred to the medical center of Sheikh Maqsoud for treatment.

Tuesday’s clashes have reached the Bani Zaid neighborhood outside Sheikh Maqsoud, as the Kurdish forces were trying to push back Nusra militants.

“We have been eventually able to repel the attack in the midnight, and our units are currently installing two new checkpoints to deter future offensives by the Islamists in Sheikh Maqsoud,” the YPG official told ARA News.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants of al-Nusra Front have recently intensified their attacks on the Kurdish districts of Aleppo, amid resistance by the YPG fighters who have been trying to fortify their headquarters and the Kurdish areas in the province.

Yemen appoints top general in bid to rally tribes
AFP, AdenTuesday, 23 February 2016
Yemen’s president has appointed a veteran general as armed forces deputy commander in a bid to rally support from tribes and troops in the rebel-held Sanaa region, military sources said.

President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi’s decision to appoint Saudi-based General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a northerner known for his close ties to Sunni Islamists, was published on the government’s official sabanew.net website late Monday.

Hadi himself is supreme commander of the armed forces.

Ahmar’s troops played a prominent role in the 2011 uprising that ousted strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose loyalists are now allied with Iran-backed Shiite militias who control the capital.

In 2013, Hadi named the influential general his military and security affairs adviser after dramatically restructuring the military to curb the influence of those linked to Saleh.

Military sources explained Hadi’s decision as an attempt to gain the confidence of tribal dignitaries and senior army commanders in the Sanaa region, where Ahmar wields much influence.

His Al-Ahmar clan has historically led the influential Hashid confederation in northern Yemen.

Hadi’s move comes as loyalist forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, try to advance on Sanaa which Houthi militias captured in 2014.

Earlier this month, pro-government forces took the town of Nihm, within 40 km of Sanaa, after overrunning the headquarters of a renegade pro-rebel army brigade, loyalist military sources said.

Coalition forces have meanwhile intensified their air strikes against militia positions around Sanaa over the past week, military sources added.

Since the coalition intervened in support of Hadi last March, his loyalists have ousted the militias from five southern provinces.

In the north the insurgents have been largely confined to Marib, east of Sanaa, and Jawf on the border with Saudi Arabia.

Benghazi’s Sabri and Suq Al-Hout reported taken
Benghazi, 23 February 2016:

It is being reported that the army has finally overrun terrorist positions near Benghazi’s port. If correct, the capture of Sabri and nearby Suq Al-Hout, which have defied repeated army attacks over the last year, means that the militants have been cleared out completely of the downtown area.

In the last 48 hours Buatni, Hawari and Leithi have all been taken by the army, leaving IS and Ansar Al-Sharia forces in control of three south-western areas, Gwarsha. Garayunis and Gamhouda.

The reports of the fall of Sabri and Suq Al-Hout were broadcast early this afternoon on Libya TV. There has not yet been any confirmation from the army and Ansar militants in Sabri have reportedly still been resisting, apparently as they try to evacuate in boats from the beach.

Many city roads still have roadblocks, in part to stop ousted residents returning to their homes before checks for booby traps have been completed.

Around midday there was a series of loud explosions from Sabri but it was not possible to reach the area.

This newspaper has been told that the army flew in soldiers from Zintan to reinforce the “Blood of the Martyrs” operation. The Zintanis reportedly landed at Benina airbase. Further forces have also arrived in the city from Tobruk by road.

There is still a sense of disbelief in Benghazi at the extent of the army’s gains since the launch of its operation on Saturday. Among the key terrorist positions to have fallen has been the Rafallah Saiti camp in Hawari, which was the IS operations centre. Soldiers freed a currently unknown number of prisoners who had been held there for many months. It is being reported that there were many dead IS fighters in the camp.

Yesterday the army also overran the IS operations room in Buatni in camp 319, the former base of Saiqa Special Forces from which they were routed in 2014.

The warm sunny day in the city is adding to the mood of euphoria with motorists driving around, honking horns and waving flags. It would appear that Leithi has been cleared of snipers, which had been a concern yesterday. The Leithi highway, closed for months has now been reopened.

Spanish, Moroccan Police Arrest Four Suspected ISIL Recruiters
[ALMANAR.LB] Spanish and Moroccan police placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on Tuesday four people on suspicion of recruiting imported muscle for the ISIL terrorist organization during a joint operation, Spanish police said in a statement.

Three people were detained in Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city located in northern Africa on border with Morocco, and another one in the Moroccan city of Nador.

According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, purported ISIL recruiters are suspected of sending people to Syria and Iraq.

Stars & Stripes adds the meaty part:
One of those detained in Ceuta was a former Guantanamo detainee who was not named by Spanish authorities but described as "a leader who was trained in handling weapons, explosives and in military tactics." After being captured in 2002 and held in Guantanamo, he was returned to Spain in 2004, said Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz.
Betcha they were glad to get him back!
Another suspect was the brother of a fighter who blew himself up during an attack in Syria and man detained Tuesday "was inclined to do the same thing," he said.
"Here, lemme show you!"
The suspects had set up contacts to try to acquire weapons and bomb-making materials and were aiming "to carry out terrorist acts in Spanish territory," the Spanish ministry statement said, without specifying possible targets. They also worked to recruit teenagers from Ceuta to join IS in Iraq and Syria, the Spanish statement said.
"Hey, little kid! You want a quick trip to Paradise?"
"Duh... Sure!"

Spanish police arrested about 100 suspected Islamic extremists last year and more than 600 total since the 2004 train bombings in Madrid that killed 191 people and injured nearly 2,000.

Uzbek court sentences five for religious extremism
Who knew that Christian extremism was such a threat to Uzbekistan? Wish the article had some information about the others sentenced.
[RFE/RL] A court in Uzbekistan's eastern region of Jizzax handed five men prison terms of between 5 and 12 years for religious extremism, separatism, and sabotage. One of the men sentenced, Aramais Avakian, a 33-year-old ethnic Armenian and a Christian, was sentenced to seven years, his wife said.

Avakian was the only defendant who pleaded not guilty. He was arrested in September. Avakian's relatives say that local officials in Paxtakor district trumped up the charges in order to take over his successful fish farm.

Armenian officials had earlier said that they officially expressed concern over the case and asked Uzbek authorities to properly investigate it.

Sudden IS assault on Sabratha wreaks havoc
As assaults tend to do...

Tripoli, 23 February 2016:

IS fighters have this evening attacked Sabratha and apparently taken several key positions including the main hospital in confused fighting with the local Alwadi Brigade.

There are reports that Libya Dawn units from Zawia and Janzour along with members of Tripoli’s Rada Security Force are all heading west to support the Sabrathans. It is even being claimed that troops from Zintan are moving north toward the town.

Little is clear at the moment. However it seems that in the wake of last Friday’s US airstrikes, the Sabrathan authorities began moving against the remnants of IS in and around the town, whose presence had long been officially denied. The Tripol-based government laid on a press trip in January to prove this.

The Sabratha Media Centre is tonight claiming that while its local forces were in the south of the town in search of terrorists, between 100 and 150 IS fighters took advantage of the security vacuum in the centre of the town and moved in. Among the buildings reportedly seized, and on which black IS flags have been raised, are the police station, banks and the hospital. The last is close to Sabratha’s extensive ancient ruins.

“’They suddenly came out in the evening and attacked places in the centre of town” said one local, adding “It is a large group of of Libyans and Tunisians’

The Media Centre later reported that the authorities were regaining control. However many of the anguished responses generated by the message from some 50 social media users, claimed that they were cut off by the fighting.

The Centre said forces from the local military council had overrun an IS position in the south of the town killing four terrorists, identified as young Tunisians, but losing four of their own militiamen as well. It added that the remaining IS fighters had escaped. At least one other Sabratan has been killed and ten injured.

The Centre has put out a call for security personnel to report for duty and for doctors and nurses to help with the wounded.

Police claim success in Avijit murder case
[Dhaka Tribune] Investigators have got some crucial information in connection with the murder of secularist writer Avijit Roy from the two alleged murderous Moslems enjugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
recently in the city.

Sources said that the duo -- Kamal alias Shahin and Shah Alam alias Salauddin -- had been involved in the gruesome murder that took place on February 26 last year. Police say they are members of banned bully boy outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team.

A senior police officer, seeking anonymity, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, but refused to elaborate further.

The newly-formed Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CT) unit and the DB police arrested the two murderous Moslems from Badda on Friday. They were placed on six-day remand on Monday.

Former Buet teacher Avijit Roy, also founder of Mukto-Mona blog, was hacked to death by assailants near TSC when he and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya were returning from the book fair. Bonna sustained severe injuries in the attack.

Ansarullah has ties with HuJI-B
Founded in 1984 by Fazlur Rehman Khalil and Qari Saifullah Aktar. The Bangla branch was established in 1992 with assistance from Osama bin Laden. Recruits come mostly from Deobandi madrassahs. HuJI and Fazlur Rehman Khalil are signators of bin Laden's declaration of war on the west.

Bombs recovered from the alleged den of Ansarullah in Mohammadpur are similar to those found in Narayanganj on October 25 last year, Sherlocks said.

They think that either some members of banned Islamist group Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami (HuJIB) joined Ansarullah or they trained the Ansarullah members. Both the groups want to establish Islamic rule in the country.

DB Bomb Disposal Unit officials told the Dhaka Tribune that they had found the bombs inside the false ceiling of the flat. Similar arrangement was seen in Narayanganj.

DB Assistant Commissioner Rahmattullah Chowdhury said they had found six grenades which were made of local materials. Moreover, they found bomb-making manuals written in Bangla and Arabic.

"We saw similar preparation of grenades from the HuJIB members detained earlier. May be some bomb makers of HuJIB have joined Ansarullah," he added.

At least seven members of HuJIB were arrested by the DB police in Narayanganj last year. They had returned to Bangladesh after getting military training from Pakistain-based bully boy group Lashkar-e-Taiba

NATO advises Afghan forces to do less defending, more attacking
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
advisers want Afghan soldiers to spend less time manning checkpoints and more taking the fight to Talibs, a key tactical shift the coalition hopes will enable local forces to quell a rising insurgency, Rooters reports.

With NATO's combat mission officially over, and only a few thousand foreign troops left, the onus has fallen on the Afghan army and police to impose stability, and the military alliance is looking for ways to use those resources more effectively.

Reducing reliance on thousands of poorly defended checkpoints that dot towns and roads across the country is a priority for NATO heading into summer, when fighting is expected to intensify as the Taliban renews its push to seize back power.

"They've got way too many soldiers on checkpoints," said Brigadier-General Wilson Shoffner, front man for the NATO-led training mission known as Resolute Support.

"There's an old military saying that if you defend everywhere you defend nowhere, and it's very much true for them (Afghan cops)."

There are early signs the idea is catching on.

Over the past week, army units in the embattled province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
abandoned their outposts in several of the most disputed areas, a move officials said would allow them to consolidate forces for renewed attacks on hard boy strongholds.

"We have decided to pull out our troops from their defensive role and prepare them for an aggressive role in the coming year," said General Murad Ali Murad, commander of the Afghan army's ground forces.

"We are providing them with serious training and better equipment in order to prepare for a spring offensive."

But countrywide, obstacles remain to changing tactics long favored by security forces.

Despite providing the enemy with an obvious target, checkpoints are still simpler to defend than launching mobile operations, which require logistics and air support often beyond the reach of limited Afghan resources.

Politics can also complicate efforts to change strategy, Shoffner said.

"If you're a local chief of police or village elder, you want as many checkpoints as you can get around your village. So we often have conflict between the Afghan army that is trying to reduce checkpoints and the (local) leaders ...

Pakistan's FIR on Pathankot attack is not enough: Manohar Parrikar
[NATION.PK] Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that registration of a First Information Report (FIR) in the Pathankot attack by Pakistain is not enough.

Afghanistan
Dostum returns to battlefield to clear Jawzjan districts
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
has once again returned to battlefield in a bid to clear the areas under the anti-government armed bandidos hard boyz control.

This time Gen. Dostum has joined thousands of the Afghan cops in two districts of northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan, four months after he first launched operations in this province.

Gen. Dostum will start counter-terrorism and clearing operations in Qosh Tapa and Darzab districts of Jawzjan province this time.

Upon his arrival to Jawzjan, Gen. Dostum told news hounds that he will join almost ten thousand members of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in the mentioned districts.

He said the operations will be launched from three angles, including northern Faryab, Jawzjan and Sar-e-Pul provinces to clear the two districts from bandidos hard boyz presence.

According to reports, Qosh Tapa district has been witnessing mounting violence during the recent days and heavy clash continue between the anti-government armed bandidos hard boyz and security forces since the past one week.

This is the third time Gen. Dostum is joining the Afghan forces to clear parts of northern provinces from the bandidos hard boyz presence.

Gen. Dostum first joined the Afghan cops in the frontline in northern Faryab province earlier in the month of August last where he survived at least two liquidation plots by the anti-government armed holy warrior groups while he was leading counter-terrorism operations.

Initially his convoy was ambushed by the Taliban in bandidos hard boyz in Qaisar district in mid August while another plot to assassinate him was thwarted by the security forces and his special security guards few days later.

from the vicinity of Gen. Dostum's residence in Qaisar district in connection to the attack plot.

Afghanistan
ISIS release new propaganda video despite major setbacks in Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The loyalists of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group have released a new propaganda video despite major setbacks the terror group faced in Afghanistan in a series of deadly Arclight airstrikes and group operations.

The latest video was released on social media this afternoon which purportedly shows the loyalists of the terror group equipped with full military gear and in uniform similar as the ones worn by the fighters of the terror group in Syria and Iraq.

The high quality video starts with the footage showing the fighters of the terror group performing military exercises similar to the ones performed by the special operation forces.

Although the location where the video was created has not been ascertained so far, however the footage carries a sign of the Khurasan, the so-called Khurasan province, territorial scope of the terror group covering parts of Afghanistan and Pakistain.

In other parts of the video, a group of masked gunnies are shown carrying a prisoner in orange jump suit before he is executed for unknown reasons.

This comes as the Afghan defense officials recently said the loyalists of the terror group in Afghanistan have faced major setbacks as a result of the mounting military operations before they manage to establish and expand foothold in the country.

According to the coalition forces officials, around 1,000 to 3,000 Islamic State fighters in eastern Afghanistan are trying to establish a base of operations in the rugged mountains of Nangahar Province.

The officials further added that the loyalists of the terror group are operating in four or five remote districts of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province.

Meanwhile,
...back at the argument, Jane reached into her purse for her .38...
the US Forces in Afghanistan have also increased air campaign against the terror group in this province, carrying at least 20 Arclight airstrikes between late January and early February.

According to reports emerging earlier this month, the US forces in Afghanistan carried out at least 20 Arclight airstrikes targeting the loyalists of the terror group in a period of three months from late January to early February.

The US forces have increased air raids on the loyalists of the terror group after the B.O. regime granted new authority last month, allowing the U.S. commanders in Afghanistan launch Arclight airstrikes against forces of Evil in the same way that the military targets fighters linked to al-Qaeda.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
An Unending Bloodbath
[NATION.PK] With another string of bombings that killed over 150 and injured an estimated 180 on Sunday, it seems that the international community is getting more deluded by the day about the situation in Syria. Where is the conditional ceasefire in Syria so close to fulfillment? John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
stated that the provisional agreement between Russia and the US was nearly done, and yet he seems to have forgotten one of the most major elements in this entire conflict; The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Once more IS grabbed credit for this horrific attack in Homs and Damascus, targeting Shias in response to the government's move towards recapturing Aleppo, assisted by Russian air strikes. Not even a single faction in this fight is seemingly considering laying down arms, if only to provide access to humanitarian aid, and yet somehow claims are being made that fighting will be stopped soon. Bashar Al Assad had just asked for refugees to come back, claiming that their lives were not in as much danger as when they fled. The Syrian government's apathetic behaviour towards its own people is abominable, but statements from Assad clearly imply that the government has absolutely no handle on the situation.

With a total of 34 soldiers killed in two separate bombing incidents in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Erdogan's government also looks to be stepping its bid to supply rebels opposed to the Kurds, in addition to shelling Kurdish territory along its southern border. Turkey is one of the architects of this new ceasefire too as is Moscow, which has consistently conducted an aerial campaign. Both are getting increasingly hostile by the day, and this flare-up will only lead to more conflict in Syria. Iran still supports Assad, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Western powers continue to oppose him which makes the possibility of a long-term solution minute unless there is a drastic change in the strategic policy of all interested parties.
The only possible way a cessation in hostilities can be achieved is if the powers first stop conducting strikes and the supply of arms to their favourite faction in Syria. Let humanitarian aid pass, and then come to an agreement over what is to be done. If the world powers will continue to pit their chosen rebel group against another, the fighting will continue unabated. There is too much money being spent on arms to supply militias, and unless this changes, people will keep dying by the hundreds.

Bangladesh
War criminal Mir Quasem's appeal hearing to end today
[Dhaka Tribune] The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday heard the prosecution arguments in the appeals case of condemned Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali
...Jamaat-e-Islamic Central Committee member and Saudi money man in Bangla. Currently waiting to be hanged....
A five-member panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha adjourned the hearing until today after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam placed his arguments against Quasem, who had been a commander of notorious al-Badr force in the Chittagong during the Liberation War.

At one stage of the hearing, the court expressed dissatisfaction over the prosecution and the Sherlocks of the International Crimes Tribunal for their "incompetence" as they had failed to bring witnesses against some charges brought against the war criminal.

The court said that they were shocked at the performance of the tribunal's prosecution team and the Sherlocks. "Huge amount of money is being spent, but their responsibilities are not reflected in their performance," it said.

The court also asked the prosecution to end their arguments by today.

The defence earlier claimed that his client had not been directly involved in any of the incidents and that the witnesses produced unreal depositions.

The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
financier Quasem, now 64, was awarded capital punishment by the tribunal on November 3, 2014. As many as 24 prosecution witnesses testified against Quasem.

The tribunal handed down the death penalty on two charges -- for killing seven people, including teenage freedom fighter Jasimuddin, after abduction. He was also awarded a total of 72-year imprisonment on the eight other proven charges of abduction, conspiracy and planning.

The Appellate Division started hearing on his appeal on February 9. It is the seventh appeals case heard by the top court.

Quasem joined Islami Chhatra Sangha, then student wing of Jamaat, in 1967 while studying at Chittagong Collegiate School. He later became its Chittagong city unit general secretary. He played an important role in forming al-Badr Bahini.

He had set up makeshift torture camps at different places in the port city. According to the government, Quasem has also spent a large amount of money abroad to make the war crimes trials controversial.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan Air Strikes Kill 15 Militants in Border Area
[ALMANAR.LB] Pakistain's military said Tuesday it had killed 15 Lions of Islam in air strikes along its restive border with Afghanistan on Tuesday as part of a major offensive to clear Taliban and Al-Qaeda terrorist groups' strongholds.

The strikes were carried out in the Alwara, Khar Tangi and Maizer areas of North Wazoo's tribal region, the bastion of Islamist bandidos murderous Moslems who rose up against the state in 2004.

Pakistain began its operation in June 2014, after a bloody Taliban attack on Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport finally sank faltering peace talks earlier that year.

"Fifteen bad boyz were potted and eight of their hideouts destroyed in the aerial strikes today," the military said in a brief statement.

The conflict zone is remote and off-limits to journalists, making it difficult to verify the news, including the number and identity of those killed.

The bombings came a day after a US drone strike, which was targeting three compounds belonging to fighters from the Haqqani network in the Kurram tribal district
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
, injured one murderous Moslem, according to Pak security officials.

Pakistain officially denounces such strikes as a violation of its illusory sovereignty, though analysts believe the two countries coordinate at least some of the attacks.

The Haqqani network targets Afghan, US forces and Indian interests in Afghanistan and some analysts believe it is linked to Pakistain's shadowy security establishment.

Home Front: WoT
Obama's plan to shut Guantanamo set for Congress
[NATION.PK] The Pentagon is expected to submit a plan to Congress to close the United States military prison at Guantanamo Bay, setting up a battle with politicians who oppose President Barack Obama's
Because I won...
efforts to close down the facility.

Obama, whose pledge to shut the prison on a naval base in Cuba dates back to the start of his presidency, is seeking to make good on his promise before he leaves office next January.

Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon front man, said that the administration intended to meet Tuesday's deadline to present a detailed proposal for closing the facility. There are still 91 prisoners held there.

"We understand the deadline is tomorrow and it's our intent to meet it" Davis said on Monday.

US officials have said the plan will include sending 35 detainees who are cleared for transfer to either their home country or to a third country.

The remaining prisoners would be brought back to US soil and held in maximum-security prisons. Congress has banned such transfers to the US mainland since 2011.

Another option will be the possibility of sending some prisoners overseas for prosecution and trial, one US official said according to the Rooters news agency.

The plan could also serve as a template for how to deal with future combatants captured in the fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

The document will not name the alternative US prisons under consideration for housing detainees, US officials said.

The administration wants to avoid fuelling any political outcry over specific sites during a US presidential election year.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
Pentagon officials have already surveyed a federal prison in Florence, Colorado, a military jail at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Navy brig at Charleston, South Carolina.

An effort will also be made to speed up parole-style reviews to determine whether more prisoners can be added to the group cleared for release, officials said.

The plan will include costs for upgrading US facilities and housing the inmates there, according to a source familiar with the matter. The White House last year rejected one Pentagon proposal as too expensive, sending it back for revisions.

Republicans and some Democrats in Congress largely oppose proposals to move any of the prisoners to the United States.

Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte said on Monday that the B.O. regime refused to "level with the American people regarding the terrorist activities and affiliations of the detainees who remain at Guantanamo".

White House front man Josh Earnest reiterated Obama's view of Guantanamo as a "recruiting tool" for enemies of the US, and urged politicians to look at the plan "with an open mind", although he expressed doubt about whether they would do so.

The White House has left open the possibility that Obama might resort to executive powers to close the facility.

The prison was opened in 2002 by former Republican President George W Bush to house foreign suspects rounded up after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

The US quickly drew criticism from human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
activists and foreign governments over Guantanamo, where most prisoners have been held for more than a decade without trial.

French 'Jungle' migrant camp at centre of storm
[GLOBALPOST] The notorious refugee camp in Calais, northern La Belle France, known as the "Jungle" is a key staging post for desperate migrants trying to cross the Channel to reach Britannia.

French authorities want to demolish half of the camp, but on Tuesday a court delayed its ruling on the eviction of residents just hours before they were to be forced to leave.

Following are some key developments from recent years:

- November, 2002: Closure of the Red Thingy Sangatte refugee camp in Calais, which housed 700 to 800 mainly Afghan migrants. The migrants then gather in an area to the northeast of Calais, in a makeshift tent camp which soon becomes known as the Jungle.

The camp is near to the point where thousands of lorries board ferries -- and migrants, without official documents, try to climb on to the vehicles to cross the Channel.

- September 22, 2009: The Jungle is demolished for the first time by 500 coppers, despite protests by anti-globalisation activists and criticism from the Left.

- April, 2015: A new makeshift tent camp named the New Jungle emerges near a state-run day centre for migrants outside Calais. It later becomes known as the Jungle.

- June 1, 2015: 21 people are injured when a brawl breaks out overnight between up to 300 migrants in the camp.

- November 9-11, 2015: Clashes break out between police and migrants around the Jungle. Police presence is stepped up.

- November 23, 2015: La Belle France's top administrative court, responding to an procedure initiated by non-governmental organizations, gives the government one week to start cleaning up the Jungle, where it says thousands are living in "inhuman" conditions.

- January 23, 2016: The port of Calais is shut down for more than three hours after dozens of migrants board a moored Britannia-bound ferry. The incident comes after some 2,000 people protested nearby over living conditions in the Jungle.

- February 6, 2016: Around 20 people are jugged
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Calais at a rally in support of Germany's anti-Islamic organization Pegida. The rally, which had been banned by the authorities, descends into festivities.

- February 19, 2016: The Calais authorities set a deadline of 1900 GMT Tuesday, February 23, for people in the southern half of the Jungle camp to leave. Local authorities say a total of 3,700 people are living in the Jungle, and that between 800 and 1,000 will be affected by the eviction order.

- February 23, 2016: The ultimatum is pushed back, with a French court delaying its ruling on the demolition.

Bosnia's mufti urges authorities to act after Islamist threat
[GLOBALPOST] Bosnia's Muslim religious leader Husein Kavazovic urged authorities on Tuesday to act after he was threatened by an alleged Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group member following his denunciation of Islamist extremism.

"The Islamic community of Bosnia takes seriously threats... to (Bosnia's) Muslims and the Grand Mufti Husein Kavazovic," a statement released from his office read.

"We hope that the state's institutions will take up this issue," the statement said.

The appeal was issued after some local media broadcast a video of a Bosnian-speaking man in front of an Islamic State flag threatened to "cut the throat" of Kavazovic, adding that the "mujaheddin are coming to Bosnia."

According to public broadcaster FTV, the man is Bosnian Muslim Amir Selimovic who joined jihadists in Syria in 2014.

Bosnia's security minister Dragan Mektic said the authorities were taking the threats "seriously."

"We are taking and will take additional security measures" to protect Kavazovic, Mektic told news hounds.

After the November terror attacks in Gay Paree that left 130 people dead, Kavazovic repeatedly denounced Islamic extremism and radicalisation among Bosnian Muslims, who make up 40 percent of the Balkan country's 3.8 million people.

Five days after the French attacks two Bosnian soldiers were killed in Sarajevo in a suspected Islamist attack.

A college of Bosnian muftis announced in December it would integrate into the nation's official Muslim community some 60 "illegal" places of worship that were believed to attract radical Muslims and serve as jihad recruiting centres.

Out of some 200 Bosnian citizens who have joined jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, at least 26 have been killed, but some 50 have returned home, according to authorities.

The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. Maoist hit squad leader gunned down in Mindanao
[Inquirer] The Philippine military said it killed the leader of a communist hit squad implicated in the murder of soldiers and civilians, during a brief clash in San Fernando, Bukidnon, on Tuesday morning.

Capt. Bob Tamula said a militant, identified as Bugsong, was gunned down by soldiers as he attempted to kill a soldier in Kalagangan village. A peace and development team was in the area when two motorcycles with four people aboard passed by. One of the militants fired at the soldiers using a handgun, prompting them to retaliate.

Tamula said, "One of the suspects identified later as alias Bugsong was hit and he fell to the ground while his companions fled."

He said Bugsong was the leader of Special Partisan Unit, a hit squad of Guerrilla Front 55 of the New People's Army Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, which operates in the hinterlands of Bukidnon and Davao del Norte provinces.

Tamula said the group has been tagged as behind the killing of a number of soldiers, militiamen and civilians in San Fernando and Talaingod areas.

India-Pakistan: ISIL Has Many Enemies

#1  All this Islamic terrorist support is quite open in Pakistan and most Pakistanis believe that this provides Pakistan with protection from attacks by true Islamic terrorists. Thus any "Islamic terrorist" violence against Pakistan must be instigated by India, Israel and/or the West. This includes the creation and support for groups like ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and al Qaeda. No real Muslim would commit the atrocities against Muslims that those two groups are accused of. But because ISIL and al Qaeda have been declared outlaws by most of the world (including the UN) public statements in Muslim nations must go along. On the street, however, there is no such pretense. Any time an Islamic terrorist attack kills non-Muslims it is a victory for Islam. Whenever the victims are Muslims, it's another example of non-Muslims attacking Islam. Of course many educated Pakistanis know better, but in many Muslim countries the Islamic conservatives can get away with murder if the victim is someone who has openly questioned these myths. This has long been true in Pakistan and is even occasionally true in Bangladesh, which at least goes after the killers and makes a real effort to shut down all Islamic terror groups.

You would think that they were all listening to MSNBC.

"We should all take a deep breath and talk to each other, rather than use a lawsuit to circumvent the critical and necessary policy discussions," Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., wrote in a letter addressed to FBI Director James Comey.

"The precedent set in this case would essentially enact a policy proposal to weaken encryption that has not yet gained traction in Congress and was previously rejected by the White House," he said, echoing language used last week by several Tammany hangers-on on the House Judiciary Committee.

#2  I have become so cynical that I have no question that the FBI aka govt. is pushing this for nefarious reasons.

They only want to set a precedent that will ultimately lead to the requirement for total access to all data everywhere.

BTW, who reset the password on whose orders? There are so many loose ends on this story and the gov't gets cut no slack.

Two women killed during clash with Abu Sayyaf
[Inquirer] Two women were killed when Philippine security forces and Abu Sayyaf militants clashed in Lamitan City early Monday morning. Basilan police said soldiers were responding to a report about the presence of armed men in Barangay Bohe-Ibo when the rebels opened fire.

Maj. Gen. Demy Tejares said the target of the operation was Abu Sayyaf militant Nurhassan Lahaman. Tejares said details of the clash were scant but he knew the operation was carried out in support of the police, which was trying to arrest Lahaman.

Trudeau Drops Campaign Promises and Goes All In With Deficits
[BLOOMBERG] In for a penny, in for a pound.

With falling oil prices eroding Canada's revenue base, newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is fully embracing deficits, with his finance minister hinting Monday the country will run a deficit of about C$30 billion ($22 billion) in the fiscal year that starts April 1.

It's one of the biggest fiscal swings in the country's history that, in just four months since the Oct. 19 election, has cut loose all the fiscal anchors Trudeau pledged to abide by even as he runs deficits. The government's bet is that appetite for more infrastructure spending and a post-election political honeymoon will trump criticism over borrowing and unmet campaign promises.

"It looks like the Liberals want to front load as much bad news as possible in the hope when the election occurs in four years things will be better," said Nik Nanos, an Ottawa-based pollster with Nanos Research Group.

Two policemen martyred in Taliban attack in Kunar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Two coppers have embraced martyrdom in a Taliban attack in eastern Kunar province

of Afghanistan.

The provinces's police chief said the incident took place in Jabba area of Naray District on Monday night.

While talking to Azadi Radio on Tuesday morning, Colonel Abdul Habib Sayedkhil said two other coppers sustained injuries in the incident.

Taliban have grabbed credit for attack on soldiers in Naray District but in an online statement the group's spokesperson has shown a different location for the incident.

The online blurb states that a roadside kaboom exploded on a security vehicle Ghwayano Ghat area of Naray District at around 7 pm on Monday.

Kunar which shares a long border with Pakistain is one of the restive provinces in the eastern part of the country.

Besides Afghan Taliban, Pak Taliban and other turban groups also operate in this province.

#2  My wife just ranted on Trump winning Nevada. She is very concerned that a) he's a dangerous looney-tune and b) his nomination would insure that Shrillary or Bern would win.

I'm sorta in agreement with her on him but I have a hard time believing that all his bombast and blather are real. Additionally I think that even if they are he will be reined in by the system to a less destructive level.

IMHO Bern or Shrill will destroy the country forever.

#3  Yeah, a choice between an egotistical bombastic pro-American crony capitalist and a anti-American socialists/progressive/marxist. Real hard choice there boys.

BTW, you might have noticed that the Trunks in Congress just said no hearing on the O's court nominee. Do you really think that would have happened if Jeb was in the position Mr.Trump is now in?

As for Iraq. A lot of Americans having seen the waste of lives and resources squandered by the incompetent ruling class probably feel the same way. Either win it and hold it or 'why the hell did we do it in the first place?'.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 02/24/2016 8:39 Comments || Top||

#4  Here is 'why'....

In October 2002, President Bush asked for the consent of Congress — unlike the Clinton resort to force in the Balkans and the later Obama bombing in Libya, both by executive action — before using arms to reify existing American policy. Both the Senate (with a majority of Democrats voting in favor) and the House overwhelmingly approved 23 writs calling for Saddam’s forced removal.

Excerpt from the article.

#6  Trump was asked to clarify his declaration that Bush lied about Iraqi WMD. His response;
"I don't know if he lied or not. He could have lied. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't. I guess you'd have to ask him."
There's your answer. Trump is a weasel and the media doesn't challenge him. Moreover, Trump can say or do damn near anything and the Trumpbots will still support him. Bottom line, his challengers have been advised blow it off as just another foolish Trump comment.

#7  And how did Bush help his cause by not going after those who lied about 'no WMD'? The O administration demonstrated how to deal with an 'uppity' party organ (and they were on his side). Pull credentials, call them out (and their owners), sic the alphabet soup departments on them, et al. By allowing it to be repeated time and again and not forcibly challenging it, he and his administration allowed it to be sold. Problem with being a nice guy.

#8  Why doesn't Rubio face considerable heat regarding amnesty?

Trump would destroy either Sanders or Shrillary. Neither of them think fast enough on their feet to hold up in an election cycle if their opponent is Trump.

But if Trump bothers you, then Cruz is your answer, not Rubio. Rubio is just more of the same shit we've despised all along, with policies that promote the establishment rather than the people.

#10  The way turnout at the primaries (Republican turnout setting records, Democrat turnout way down) it looks the Republicans are going to destroy the Democrats no matter who is the Republican rep. Its a matter of how much.

If Trump is elected at least we'll see the Congress (both parties) doing their job and balancing the executive branch with every fiber of their being.

Those SES's can shut down bonuses, assignments, reassignments, consolidate offices, and report to Congress what they think the funding level for the Departments should be (Ah, poor babies, we've been cut like DoD). ISIS executes 2 in Deir ez-Zor
ARA News

ERBIL – Militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group on Tuesday stoned to death two teenage girls in Deir ez-Zor city, eastern Syria.

Hasna, 17, and Madiha, 16, were stoned to death at the hands of ISIS extremists after being accused of committing adultery.

“The execution took place in the Hamidiya district of Deir ez-Zor on Tuesday afternoon, where hundreds of people gathered to witness the stoning of the two young girls,” local media activist Ahmed Ramadan told ARA News.

The ISIS-led Sharia Court said in a statement that the two teenage girls were caught in a house “with two strangers”, adding that an investigation was conducted by Sharia officials before issuing the decision of carrying out the punishment.

“The victims were accused of committing adultery with two older men, identified by the Sharia Court as Abu Zubair al-Idlbi and Maher Hameed,” the source reported.

Al-Idlbi and Hamdeed were publicly flogged with 50 lashes each at the hands of ISIS jihadis in central Deir ez-Zor.

“The decision of the Sharia Court raised the anger of Deir ez-Zor’s residents, who considered it unfair to kill the two girls by stoning and merely flog the men and set them free,” Ramadan said.

Philippine troops seize BIFF camp in Maguindanao
[Gulf Today] After a 24-day sustained offensive, Philippine troops overran a "well-fortified" camp used to launch bomb attacks on villages and military installations by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Maguindanao province.

Major General Edmundo Pangilinan said helicopter gunships were used to help ground troops dislodge the rebels from their camp in a village in the town of Datu Salibo. Pangilinan reported that three soldiers were killed, the latest of whom held the rank of private first class when he stepped on a landmine left behind by the BIFF militants when they fled.

Pangilinan warned, "It is still a very dangerous place," adding that ordnance experts have rushed to the scene to defuse the improvised explosive devices. He urged about 2,500 families or 125,000 individuals forced to leave their homes not to return to their villages until the military clearing operations have been completed.

Pangilinan said the capture of the well-fortified camp dealt a major blow to BIFF rebels who used it to manufacture home-made bombs to launch attacks on villages as well as plant them along the major roads in Maguindanao and its neighboring provinces.

Last week, one of the bombs planted along the roadside killed the municipal treasurer of Datu Salibo, his son and two other companions.

The offensive was originally launched in response to an urgent request for assistance from a private contractor who was being harassed by the BIFF while undertaking dredging operations. The contractor reported that the insurgents set on fire his equipment.

Indefinite curfew imposed in Mohmand Agency
PESHAWAR: An indefinite dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed across Mohmand Agency on Monday as security forces stepped up operations in the restive region.

At around 2am on Monday morning, security forces ordered residents to stay home indefinitely via loudspeakers, before launching an operation against militants.

Meanwhile, troops have intensified patrolling across the agency.

According to the political administration, the measures have been taken after two separate attacks in the agency which left nine security officials dead.

The curfew will remain imposed from 7am to 7pm during which all education institutes and markets will remain closed.

Five militants were killed as another attack on a security checkpost was repulsed in Karapa. The girls' wing of a new government school in Tiarza was also bombed.

Mohmand is one of Pakistan’s seven tribal agencies near the Afghan border where the military has been battling Al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked militants for over a decade.

Saudi police shoot dead Bahraini suspect in restive town
Why shoot a dead suspect? I'm so confused.
[GLOBALPOST] Security forces in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
rubbed out a wanted Bahraini "terrorist" who fired at them on Tuesday in the home town of a prominent executed Shiite holy man, the interior ministry said.

It identified the dead suspect as Ali Mahmoud Ali Abdullah and said an operation to arrest him took place in Awamiya town at 4:00 pm (1300 GMT).

Gunfire was still sounding in the Gulf coast community Tuesday evening, a witness told AFP. He reported black smoke hanging over the town from tires burned in the streets by residents.

The interior ministry front man said that when officers raided a farm in Awamiya the suspect "opened fire and the situation was responded to, resulting in his death. In his possession was an automatic weapon and pistol."

In an unusual move, the interior ministry released a photo of Abdullah wearing a baseball cap sideways on his head.

"Available evidence showed he participated in committing a number of terrorist crimes, destabilising security and public order in Qatif," the front man said, referring to the surrounding Shiite-dominated region.

The witness reported seeing the body of a second individual lying in the street.

"People said an armoured vehicle hit him," the witness said.

The town of about 30,000 has been the scene of repeated incidents since 2011.

4 indicted in US on charges of violating Iran sanctions
[IsraelTimes] Shahin Tabatabaei, one of those charged, ran companies that shipped American items through other countries into Islamic Theocratic Republic

A man was locked away
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
upon entering the US from Canada this week as he was one of four people charged in a previously secret indictment accusing them of conspiring to violate trade sanctions against Iran from 2007 to 2011.

The FBI said Shahin Tabatabaei was arrested upon entering the United States north of Seattle on Monday. According to a 2013 indictment by a federal grand jury in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, he ran companies in Mexico and Canada that shipped American items through other countries into Iran.

The items appear to have had applications in the oil and gas industry, and the indictment suggests at least some had potential military uses.

A lawyer for Tabatabaei did not immediately return emails from The News Agency that Dare Not be Named seeking comment.

The other defendants in the case were based in Canada and Iran.

Yemeni army and resistance forces make progress in Taiz
Al Arabiya News

Tuesday, 23 February 2016

The Yemeni army and popular resistance forces have made considerable progress on several fronts in Taiz, while Houthi militias have continued a bombing campaign of civilians in the city, Al Arabiya News reported.

Al-Jawf province in northern Yemen saw fierce fighting between pro-government forces and Houthi militias who are supported by forces of the ousted former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

With pro-government forces making advances on the out outskirts of the capital Sanaa, sources told Al Arabiya News in Sanaa that the coup leaders were attempting to make contact with some of the elders of al-Toq tribe to gain their support.

The same tactic has been noticed with ouster Saleh, who in recent days has been sending delegations of his supporters in a bid to gain support against the legitimate government of President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi.
