Idaho Pastor Shot, Critically Wounded After Delivering Prayer for Ted Cruz
The pastor of a prominent Idaho church was shot and critically wounded in the church's parking lot Sunday, a day after he delivered the invocation at a campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, authorities told NBC News.

Tim Remington, 55, senior pastor of the nondenominational Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene, was taken to Kootenai Health and Medical Center in critical condition, police and the hospital told NBC News. The hospital reported his status as stable late Sunday night.

Coeur d'Alene police Detective Jared Reneau said that when officers arrived shortly before 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET), they found Remington with multiple gunshot wounds. Matthew Remington, Remington's nephew, told NBC station KTVB of Boise that his uncle was conscious and was talking to emergency workers on the way to the hospital.

The gunman fled and remains at large. Coeur d'Alene Police identified the suspect late Sunday as Kyle Andrew Odom, 30, a white man in his mid-30s with blond hair and blue eyes. Odom was believed to have been driving a 2004 silver Honda Accord, and police warned he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Associate pastor John Padula told NBC station KHQ of Spokane, Washington, that there is surveillance of the man waiting in a silver car for Remington. He told The Associated Press that Remington has been threatened several times by some of the drug addicts he works with through his faith-based recovery program.

Padula said the church was praying for the gunman as well as Remington.

"We don't love him less than anybody else," Padula said. "And we pray that he comes to know Jesus Christ as his lord and savior, so we don't want to see anything bad happen to him, either."
But we wouldn't mind seeing him in jail until he promises to behave.
Remington, a prominent spokesman for conservative issues, delivered the opening prayer for Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas who is among the leading candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, at a rally Saturday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

"Our prayers are with Pastor Tim, his family, and the doctors who are supervising his care," Catherine Frazier, a spokeswoman for Cruz's campaign, told NBC News. "We pray for his full recovery and are thankful for the efforts of law enforcement to ensure the attacker is swiftly brought to justice."

Remington grew up in Coeur d'Alene, in northern Idaho, and was pastor of a church in California during the 1980s, when he started a street ministry for drug and alcohol addicts, according to a biography on the church's website.

He returned home to Coeur d'Alene about 18 years ago and started The Altar Church, as well as the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation drug and alcohol residential program. He and his wife, Cindy, have four children.

#1  The media certainly have no problem identifying the race of the suspect when they're blonde haired and blue eyed, do they?

#6  The original Mosin Nagants were excellent and extremely accurate.

When the Boleshiks took over they wanted to continue to use the Mosin but wanted to expunge the nasty old Czarist origins but taking them all in, disassembling them and throwing all the parts into a pile and randomly reassembling. Eli Whitney the early Czarist gunsmiths were not and the results were not so good.

But remember, the Reds used the Mosin as a sniper rifle for a bazillion years for its accuracy.

I agree with all of the rest of the article except the Thompson. What you see in the video is a dumbed down version of the Thompson simplified for mass production and use by the Airborne. So much of what the narrator says is true of the WWII version but not the older versions.

I had a Thompson for a brief spell and I like the interchangability of ammo between my beloved Colt and the Thompson. Besides in the fricking jungle you rarely get to shoot at anything that isn't right in your face and the .45 cuts brush much better than the M-16 or the AK (which I think is a piece of crap). Go tell those Cubans in Angola that the Thompson is an over rated weapon...

Hard right stuns with huge election gains in Frankfurt
Unexpectedly!
The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) stole huge amounts of votes off the established political parties in elections in central Germany, while a small neo-Nazi party won 17 percent in one district.

Confirming polling which shows that the AfD have hugely increased their share of the vote since Germany decided to open its doors to refugees in late August 2015, the right-wing party won on average 13.2 percent of votes at local election in the central German state of Hesse on Sunday.

This result made the AfD the third largest party behind Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who won 28.2 percent and 28.0 percent respectively, Hessischer Rundfunk reports. Both of Germany’s largest political parties lost a substantial share of the vote from the last elections.
Perhaps this explains Frau Merkel's pull-back recently. She can read polls as well as any other politician...
In Hesse’s capital Wiesbaden, the AfD scored a particular success, winning 16.2 percent of the vote.

But it is the result in Frankfurt, a global financial centre with a cosmopolitan population, which in many ways came as a surprise.

Up until this point the AfD has largely won votes in economically marginalized areas such as the states of former East Germany. The AfD’s previous best election result was 12.2 percent of the vote in 2014 state elections in the eastern state of Brandenburg, one of the poorest regions in Germany.

In former West Germany, the AfD had previously struggled to make the 5 percent cut of votes necessary to make it into a state parliament, scoring a best of 6.1 percent in Hamburg in 2015.

While the AfD were born as a single issue party in 2013, fighting to dismantle the European single currency, they lurched to the right in the summer of 2015 when party members toppled founder and economics professor, Bernd Lucke. In recent months the party’s new leadership has caused outrage by suggesting that it is acceptable to shoot at immigrants who cross into Germany illegally.

With major state elections coming up in three German states in mid-March, the results also act as a shot across the bow of the CDU and SPD which both support an open-door refugee policy.

‘Terrifying result’

"It’s terrifying," Eva Högl, vice chairwoman of SPD in the national parliament, told broadcaster ARD, saying the AfD are following an "unspeakable course”.
Certainly terrifying for your career ambitions, Eva...
“If they enter the state parliaments with double digits and maybe even the federal parliament, this will change the whole German community in a very negative way.
"My meal ticket!"
“Elections are way too important to teach someone a lesson - it is about forming our society and democracy."
"My pension!"
"The traditional parties are paying the price for the voters' protest,” Manfred Pentz, CDU secretary general of Hesse, told to the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Monday.
I think that's called, "democracy". Though European and American elites would no doubt disagree...

The Origins of Trump Nihilism
...All the latent class biases of the Republican gentry are now on the table, and they prove more compatible with Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump. Republican nihilism is the result.

Take immigration, a hot-button issue that ignited Trumpism, even when polls suggested voters’ real concerns were the economy and health care. If your experience with illegal immigration is hiring and patronizing with a daily "Buenas tardes" a JosĂŠ Garcia, your skilled, dependable--and rather inexpensive--gardener, or navigating around the political-correctness of an upper-middle-class diversity officer on campus or at work, then you are likely to embrace the Jeb Bush idea that illegal immigration is an "act of love." That is an inexpensive and easily arrived at position--but not so if you are middle class and lack the romance of the poor and the influence and money of the well off.

If you do your own lawn and clean your own home, or you live and school among the lower middle classes, and your job is always in jeopardy, then even Trump’s vulgarity on issues is proof that he "cares" while the calm perspective of Jeb Bush, or an earlier incarnation of Marco Rubio, or the sermons of John Kasich can come across as crass indifference.

...The children of Republican elites do not sit in classes where a quarter of the students do not speak English. When that specter of diversity looms, parents yank their kids and put them in the prep schools of Silicon Valley that are rapidly reaching New England numbers (or maybe better southern academies that followed integration). Their children are not on buses where an altercation between squabbling eight year olds leads to a tattooed parent arriving at your home to challenge you to a fight over "disrespecting" his family name. The establishment Republicans have rarely jogged around their neighborhoods only to be attacked by pit bulls, whose owners have little desire to speak English, much less to cage, vaccinate, or license their dogs. They have never been hit by illegal-alien drivers in Palo Alto. In other words, they do not wish to live anywhere near those who, as a result of an act of love, are desperately poor, here under illegal auspices, and assume California works and should work on the premises of Oaxaca.

...Trump, who has hired illegal alien labor, attacked Mitt Romney as insensitive on immigration and came late to the immigration debate. But even when he demagogues illegal immigration, and slurs and smears, his supporters do not care about the impracticality of his wall or his baiting of Mexico (whose leaders are far more racist than is the American working class). They care only that someone for a moment seems mad like they are, and does not lecture them on their own supposed biases and shortcomings. The way to further empower Trump is certainly to parody and mock his supporters.

...But at least for a while longer, millions of Republicans and lots of Reagan Democrats would gladly prefer to be wrong with Trump than right with anyone else.

#1  Republican nihilism? Well, they have been the gang who couldn't shoot straight and have ended up shooting themselves in the foot a few times out in the past elections. They have also been flaccid, moribund and absent in the game of politics and policy-making despite having control of both houses.
Posted by: JohnQC || 03/07/2016 7:42 Comments || Top||

#2  The main problem with this is that the Republican gentry are portrayed as a separate entity rather than the representative of the "protected", inside the beltway, corruptocrat class that includes all the Democrats and bureaucrats as well.
Posted by: AlanC || 03/07/2016 8:26 Comments || Top||

#3  Too many years of the Lucy Van Pelt "Yes, Charlie Brown, this year I will actually hold the football and not yank it out of the way just before you try to kick" strategy of the GOP in dealing with its former base. This is the image of people crawling over broken glass because of the choices you've been giving them for decades.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 03/07/2016 8:38 Comments || Top||

#4  Trump cares? Tell another lie. Look at his record on H2B at his resorts. Look at at his hiring of illeglas. Look at him softening up on immigration behind the scenes while he lies to the blue collar workers about helping them. Any "working class" voting for Trump is either ignorant, fooling themselves, or else throwing a tantrum to tear the whole thing down in irrational anger. The problem is, like Mussolini's voters, and the people that elected Hitler, they seem very capable of extreme self deception about the nature and the character of the person they are voting into power. Its a societal psychosis, and the success of Dear Leader Trump and Socialist Sanders are symptoms that this nation has lost its mind.

#5  They care only that someone for a moment seems mad like they are, and does not lecture them on their own supposed biases and shortcomings. The way to further empower Trump is certainly to parody and mock his supporters.

This. And the fact that Trump appears to be apologetically pro-American -- with is anathema among our "betters" in government, business, academia and media.
Posted by: regular joe || 03/07/2016 11:42 Comments || Top||

#6  The GOP Establishment has had ample warning. Starting with Cruz beating Dewhurst establishment in Texas, and Rubio taking out establishment Charlie Crist in Florida before Rubio sold out to the Gang of 8. This should have been a wake up call.

The GOP in DC had an explicit warning shot when Dave Brat defeated future speaker Cantor in the primary in an establishment stronghold in northern Virginian in 2014. But they did not listen.

Now they dare act surprised when people are angry and self destructive? Right or wrong, these Trump voters have decided to play at being Samson, and destroy it all, to pull the roof in on them and themselves.

The GOP is broken and deserves to be replaced. The question is at what cost? Hillary and 3 justices on the Supreme court and losing the Senate? We are doomed if these angry irrational people decide that is the path they want, because that path results in armed rebellion sooner or later.

Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 03/07/2016 12:21 Comments || Top||

#9  OK, so exactly what is it that makes California teachers so much worse than teachers in other state? The sunshine? The beach? The jammed up freeways? The smog? The million dollar cracker box houses? It can't be the union because other states have teacher unions too.

#10  Trump cares? Tell another lie.

Yeah, yeah. Smear, smear.

Are you trying to convince me that I should vote for another Clinton?

If Trump screws up we'll throw him out in 2020. But it's a mystery to me how he could possibly screw up any worse than the kleptocrats we've had running things the past few decades.

#12  Trump will get destroyed by the press. Recall the New York Times and its endorsement of John McCain in late February of 2008. After Mitt Romney conceded the nomination to McCain, the same newspaper that endorsed McCain published a shabby smear that insinuated that McCain had a sexual affair with a lobbyist, and then demanded to see his medical records to ensure he was fit for office. They didn’t seem to have an issue with his personal ethics or his physical abilities when they endorsed him for the ticket, but went after McCain with a vengeance afterward.
Posted by: Herman Grumble8856 || 03/07/2016 13:14 Comments || Top||

#13  Ubbang, the truth is not a smear, you poor deluded rube. Throw out in 2020? That assumes he gets elected to begin with. Less than 1/3 of the GOP is voting for him, and every poll he loses to Hillary - so what makes you think he can beat hillary?

Learn this: Trump is a liar. Lies about his wealth. Lies about not knowing who David Duke is. His lifetime is filled with lies, going back to being a star athlete at his academy and getting a Vietnam deferment for heel spurs making him unfit for service. He dodged! And on abortion, Planned Parenthood funding, the crisis in Syria, Syrian refugees, his opinion of the flat tax, and a host of other issues, it’s simply impossible to know what Trump actually thinks, because he has repeatedly taken contradictory positions. In his personal life he has gotten how many divorces due to cheating? Lies involved there certainly.
And in a possibly fascist move he said ordering our troops to commit war crimes would be followed because he is the leader, and orders would be followed without question (presumably). I guess he never heard of the UCMJ and Geneva conventions, and the Constitution. How about using H2B to avoid Americans at his hotels? Several hundred Americans applied, less than 3% were hired, yet the remainder of Trumps jobs were filled with H2B visa imports. He is on recoard at Trump University praising outsourcing and H1B. He is being sued for fraud because of Trump University. It goes on and on. Defend that, you fool. Or wake up and find a better candidate. Because if things fall apart, its on your head as the people that refused to see the facts and voted for him anyway. Stop being angry and throwing a tantrum.

#14  Separate classes? Wrong. Who's gonna pay for it? This ain't Israel and the people sneaking across the border ain't Russians.

We need to keep those people outta here.

I don't wanna get personal here but my wife is a school teacher. When I was a kid I endured the public schools myself. Besides that I've put three of my own kids through the public schools here and I've met some very good teachers. They don't like Common Core any more than you do. I've met some stinkers too but you can't convince me they're any worse than anywhere else. If anything they're better. I will agree with you that the union sucks but, after all, it is a union so what do you expect? We'll never change it now because we've imported so many Democrat voters. That's not the teachers' fault.

I've been here all my life, over six decades, and I can tell you for a dead certain fact that California got screwed by the likes Bill Clinton, George Bush and Baraq Obama who refused to secure the border. So when Trump says he'll build a wall that's what I want to hear and if it pisses off Vicente Fox so much the better.

#18  The answer is Cruz. His results from Saturday look quite promising.

But the angst at Trump is mis-directed. As others have pointed out, the GOP has only themselves to blame for Trump. The GOP ignored the wishes of the rank and file, and instead were all to happy to collect their votes and then do the opposite of what their voters wanted.

Cruz is the answer, but I'll vote Trump if he turns out to be the nominee. I won't be a participant to telling the rank and file that THEIR votes don't count.

#20  Trump is the result of a political party that is too concerned with operating inside the beltway and forgetting who elected them and who they are supposed to represent. The party is spending all of its energy fighting trump and not tryng to figure out why he is so popular. Their total lack of respect for their voting public, that they call stupid and backward, have had enough. The Republican Party mocked the tea party and almost lost the party to them. Now they are trying to defeat trump and if they don't figure it out they will Lose the party completely.

Atlanta Rapper 'Bankroll Fresh' aka Trentavious White no longer among living
(Reuters) - Atlanta rapper Bankroll Fresh, whose real name was Trentavious White, was shot dead outside a recording studio on Friday night, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said on Saturday.

White, 28, was shot just after 11 p.m. outside Street Execs Studios in north Atlanta, a spokeswoman at the medical examiner's office said.

The Atlanta Police Department did not confirm the identity of the gunshot victim, but said he was pronounced dead at the Hughes Spalding hospital after being taken there in an unknown vehicle. A large crowd of people fled the scene of the shooting when police arrived, and video evidence has been recovered, the police said in a brief statement.

The hip-hop artist was an associate of well-known Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz, who signed Bankroll Fresh to his independent record label in 2015, according to Popcorn entertainment website. His best-known song was "Hot Boy" from a 2014 mix-tape "Life of a Hotboy".

WHAT THE CAMPUS CRYBULLY WARS ARE REALLY ABOUT
h/t Instapundit
The campus wars aren’t really about race. Race and the rest of the identity politics roster are the engine for transforming an academic environment into an activist environment.

The average campus already skews left, but it maintains the pretense of serving an educational purpose. The demands put forward on various campuses begin with racial privileges, but do not end there. These demands call for politicizing every department, the mandatory political indoctrination of all students and faculty, and the submission of non-political academic departments to activist political ones.

The campus wars are a declaration that activist non-academic departments that offer identity politics analysis while contributing nothing and which often owe their existence to campus clashes from a previous generation, should dominate all areas of life and thought at every university.

Imagine if physics majors rioted and demanded that every single area of study on campus had to incorporate theoretical physics and hire physics majors. That is exactly what is happening with identity politics studies. It’s a naked power grab that has the potential to redefine academia as we know it.

If allowed to happen, more rot will set in and it is doubtful one will be able to get a decent education in these institutions.

Things have gotten so bad at the University of Tennessee that the Legislature has threatened to cut off funding to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion; the office that came up with the non-celebration of Christmas recommendations and new pronouns to satisfy LGBT demands.

#2  JQC, I thought Tenn. had pulled that plug.

This is also why government takeover is so important in education. If we have a free market the response is the institution of private schools that don't play these games.

It is classic rent-seeking behavior to get laws and regulations passed to prevent this kind of competition.

Britain
Britain's NHS Proposal: Harvest Baby Organs to Meet "Dire" Shortage
[LI] In a move being called "ghoulish" by one critic, Britain's National Health Service (NHS) has announced plans to ask pregnant women to carry to term babies that have severe birth defects so that, once delivered or still born, their babies’ organs can be harvested for transplant.

"Women whose babies develop fatal defects in the early stages of pregnancy will be given advice on going ahead with the birth so the NHS can harvest their organs, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Most expectant mothers opt for termination after being told the devastating news their child has no chance of survival once born.

But now, amid a chronic shortage of donated organs, mums will be ‘supported’ to have the baby at nine months so that the child’s vital organs can be taken for transplant.

. . . . The move was revealed at a medical conference where NHS transplant surgeons said they wanted to take more organs from babies nationally to address a dire shortage.

As part of this drive, midwives and other NHS workers are to be educated about the potential for using babies’ organs in transplants.

In the past two years, only 11 babies under two months have become organ donors. But doctors believe they could raise that figure to around 100 a year.

Speaking of obtaining more organs from newborns, transplant surgeon Niaz Ahmad, of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, said: ‘We are looking at rolling it out as a viable source of organ transplantation nationally.”

Conrad Black: Don't underestimate Donald
h/t Instapundit
...And then it turned into a nation of idiots, incapable of doing anything except conduct military operations against primitive countries. The objective performance of the latter Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama administrations, and the Gingrich, Reid-Pelosi, and Boehner-led congresses, and most of the courts, have for these 25 years been shameful and as unprecedented in American history as the swift rise of America was in the history of the world. The people turned out rascals and got worse rascals.

...What is called for now is a clean and decisive break from the personalities and techniques of the recent past. Donald Trump doesn't remind anyone of the presidents just mentioned, but he elicited a surge of public support by a novel, almost Vaudeville, routine as an educated billionaire denouncing the political leadership of the country in Archie Bunker blue-collar terms.

...All the other candidates in both parties were vieux jeu, passe. Only a few of the governors (Bush, Christie, and Kasich) had run anything successfully, none of them had built anything, and all were up to their eyeballs in the sleazy American political system -- long reduced to a garish and corrupt log-rolling game of spin-artists, lobbyists, and influence-peddlers. Bernie Sanders gets a pass, but he is an undischarged Marxist, and while many of his attacks on the incumbent system and personnel have merit, his policy prescriptions are unacceptable to 90 per cent of Americans.

...On Tuesday night, Cruz ran strongly in his home state of Texas but his support is now confined exclusively to Bible-thumping, M16-toting corn-cobbers and woolhats, and he has no traction outside the southwest and perhaps Alaska. The orthodox Republican candidate, Marco Rubio, is now a Chiclet-smiled, motor-mouth loser, having first been exposed as such by Chris Christie (the New Jersey governor who could have won the nomination and election four years ago and is now running for the vice-presidential nomination with Trump). Rubio should bite the dust in Florida next week. On Super Tuesday evening Donald Trump made the turn from rabble-rouser to nominee-presumptive. The only early campaign excess he has to walk back is the nonsense that all the 11 million illegal migrants will be removed, and then many will be readmitted. Of course the selection process must occur before they are evicted, not after.
I believe he meant "readmitted when hell freezes over"

40 ISIS troops defect to rebel side in Aleppo
ALEPPO – The Syrian armed opposition has facilitated the dissidence of dozens of ISIS militants in the northern countryside of Aleppo on Saturday.
"Please don't let them behead us!"
Rebel factions coordinated with fighters who wanted to desert the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group in Syria’s Aleppo before securing their dissidence.

“There have been confidential contacts between opposition factions and members of ISIS over the past two months. The efforts resulted in the defection of 40 ISIS militants with support from Failaq al-Sham (main Syrian rebel group in Aleppo),” rebel spokesman Ali Jaafar told ARA News on Sunday.

“The confidentiality of this operation has led to its success. The fighters who deserted ISIS are now in a secure location,” Jaafar said, adding the dissidents will remain under close observation by the rebels “in order to make sure they won’t violate the principles of this deal”.

This comes as the western coalition continued striking ISIS positions in the Harbal town north of Aleppo, where dozens of militants were killed and injured in the past few days.

The northern countryside of Aleppo is witnessing battles between different armed groups. According to activists, the developments in Aleppo could determine the results of the ongoing Syria peace talks in Geneva.

Airstrike kills 10 in central Somalia
An airstrike by unidentified Ruritanian fighter jets has claimed the lives of at least ten people, including unarmed civilians in central Somalia, an senior official said on Sunday.

Confirming the incident, Bulo-Burde district commissioner Abdulaziz Durow, said the warplanes bombed Al shabaab-held Qob-Yahas, Ran Gobo and Raso, all are located in the west of the town.

“The military jets pounded on different Al shabaab positions near the town, and killed at least ten people, most of them innocent civilians,” said Bulo-Burde district administrator.

In the past, Ruritanian Kenyan military warplanes killed dozens of ‘civilians’ in Southern Somalia in airborne attacks aimed at the Al-Qaeda-linked Al shabaab fighters.

QAMISHLI – Top jihadi commander in the ranks of the Islamic State (ISIS) was killed on Sunday after internal clashes broke out among the group’s militants in Syria’s northeastern city of Raqqa.

Abu Ali al-Tunisi, a Tunisian jihadi and commander of ISIS military operations in northern Raqqa, was killed at the hands of fellow ISIS militants, according to an informed source in Raqqa.

“Al-Tunisi was attacked by a group of ISIS militants who used to fight under his command in the northern countryside of Raqqa,” local media activist Ammar al-Hassan told ARA News.

The militants have reportedly opened fire at the car of their commander on Sunday evening, killing him and two of his escorts.

“Clashes broke out among the militants after the death of al-Tunisi, until the ISIS-led Islamic Police intervened and arrested at least three of those responsible for the commander’s death,” al-Hassan reported.

This comes amid escalating rifts within the group over power and distribution of money.

Local members of ISIS have reportedly protested against the group’s leadership for promoting a number of foreign jihadis to senior positions. Moreover, a wave of outrage has recently spread among the militants for the decreasing salaries, that followed the group’s loss of key resources amid continuous airstrikes by the western coalition.

In the meantime, dozens of militant fighters deserted ISIS ranks in Aleppo with support from Syrian rebel factions.

The "blue on blue" concept came into being during the 2000 presidential election in which states carrying George W. Bush were colored in red by the TV networks, while states carrying the kommie were displayed in blue. I have kept to this paradigm since.

Rooshun warbirds hammer targets in Aleppo
ALEPPO – Russian warplanes conducted on Sunday several airstrikes on a town held by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, killing and wounding a number of civilians, according to local activists.

The Russian airstrikes hit the ISIS-held town of Umm Kharza in the eastern countryside of Aleppo. At least five civilians were killed and a dozen more injured in the strikes.

“Local rescue teams pulled dead bodies of five victims from the rubble subsequent to the Russian raids, which mainly hit residential buildings in central Umm Kharza,” rights activist Muhannad al-Jassim told ARA News in Aleppo.

“More than 15 others were wounded in the strikes, which caused a huge damage in the town. Activists are still searching for victims under the ruins of destroyed buildings,” the source reported.

In the meantime, a source close to ISIS reported the death of one militant and injury of two others in Sunday’s strikes.

The Russian warplanes also launched three raids on ISIS-held areas in the vicinity of Syria’s northern Manbij city on the border with Turkey on Sunday. It was not immediately clear whether these strike caused any losses in the ISIS ranks.

US seeking to destroy independent nation of Venezuela: Analyst
[Iran Press TV] Under US President Barack Obama, Washington has sought to “destabilize” and “undermine” Venezuela because of its anti-imperialist policies and close ties to countries like China and Iran, an American geopolitical analyst says.

“The United States is directly targeting Venezuela because it sees in Venezuela a threat to its own regional hegemony,” said Eric Draitser, the founder of stopimperialism.org.

“Venezuela as a close ally of Russia, a close ally of Iran, as a close ally of China,” Draitser said during an interview with Press TV on Sunday.

The Obama administration is continuing to “destabilize, to undermine and to do whatever it can to destroy the independent, socialist nation of Venezuela,” he added.

The US government has also led destabilization efforts in other left-wing and anti-colonialist Latin American nations, including Argentina, Bolivia and Equator, Draitser observed.

Taliban refusal puts talks in jeopardy
[DAWN] Efforts for reviving the reconciliation dialogue between the Afghan government and the Taliban ran into trouble on Saturday with the main faction of the turban group denying it planned to join the process, besides questioning its efficacy.

"We unequivocally state that the leader of Islamic Emirate has not authorised anyone to participate in this meeting," said a statement by the Taliban, who officially call themselves ‘Islamic Emirate’ -- the moniker they used during the period they ruled Afghanistan.

The statement further reiterated the conditions the group has been stating all along for entering the peace dialogue -- exit of foreign forces from Afghanistan, lifting of curbs on Taliban leaders and release of Taliban prisoners from Afghan jails.

Azerbaijani and Turkish air forces to hold drills
According to the Russian language regnum.ru, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin visited Baku Sunday to discuss military-industrial cooperation. The Russian Air Defense branch (PVO) used to maintain an air base in Nasosnaya in Baku, host to 2 Russian interceptor air regiments. Dismantled prolly sometime around the 2009 military reforms.
Air Forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey will hold joint military exercises “TurAz Shahini-2016” in the Turkish province of Konya. The exercises of the two countries will be held on March 7-25, the Turkish General Staff reported on March 4.

The first "TurAz Qartali" drills of the Azerbaijani and Turkish Armies were held in Azerbaijan in September 2015. The exercises were conducted as part of an annual joint military plan8. The joint military exercises TurAz Qartalı or TurAz Shahini and drills of the Land Forces are a good example of the level of cooperation between the armies of both countries.

Baku and Ankara enjoy strategic relations in many fields, including the military. Military cooperation between these two neighboring nations dates back to 1992 when they signed an agreement on military education. Since then, the Azerbaijani and Turkish governments have been closely cooperating in both defense and security fields. In December 2010, both countries signed a range of treaties provisioning for military assistance should any of the party be attacked by third party.

Based on numerous agreements on joint military exercises as part of bilateral progressive efforts towards military cooperation, the Azerbaijani and Turkish armed forces have hold regular drills, featuring various tactical and combat tasks so far.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh court to hear petition challenging Islam as state religion
[DAWN] The Bangladesh High Court will this month hear a writ petition that was initially filed 28 years ago, challenging the constitutional amendment that gave ‘Islam’ status of the state’s religion.

The development comes amidst a crackdown by the Bangladesh government against ‘forces of Evil and holy warriors’ behind the ‘Islamist violence’ that has recently gripped the country -- liberal activists, members of minority Muslim sects and other religious groups have been targeted in multiple attacks.

The move to make Islam the state religion had come under military ruler HM Ershad, who had inserted a section in the eighth amendment to the constitution making Islam Bangladesh’s state religion on Jun 9, 1988.

The amendment was immediately challenged through a writ petition.

The court heard the petition for the first time in Jun 2011 and sought an explanation from the government on why the part of the eighth amendment to the constitution -- that had made Islam the state religion -- should not be annulled.

While the government did not respond to the court’s query, it went on to maintain Islam as the state religion via the 15th constitutional amendment, which also reinstated ‘secularism’ as a founding principle of the state.

Turkish kops punctuate Wimmins Day protest with rubber bullets
ISTANBUL – Turkish police on Sunday briefly detained at least one woman and fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of hundreds of people trying to mark International Women’s Day in central Istanbul.

The group, which gathered two days before official Women’s Day commemorations on March 8 in order to draw more supporters on a Sunday, had ignored a ban on the march by the Istanbul governor who scrapped this year’s rally, citing security concerns.

They were seeking to draw attention to women’s issues in Turkey, which ranks 77th out of 138 countries on a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) index of gender equality.

The government frequently faces criticism for its handling of women’s issues, including the failure to stem high rates of violence and low female participation in the workforce.

Violence committed by domestic partners is 10 times more likely in Turkey, which aspires to join the European Union, than in other European countries, according to the U.N.

Hundreds of women filled the square in the Kadikoy district on the Asian side of Istanbul chanting slogans and carrying purple banners, the hallmark of a movement centered on women’s social and economic issues.

Plainclothes police began shoving members of the group, and many women fled the square when riot police fired rubber bullets into the crowd.

“We have always said that we would never leave the streets for the March 8 demonstration, and we never will. Neither the police nor the government can stop us,” protestor Guris Ozen told Reuters before the crackdown.

“You see the power of women. We are here despite every obstacle and we will continue to fight for our cause.”

Skirmishes also broke out during demonstrations in the capital Ankara, where dozens of women took to the streets.

Turkey has sharply limited the right to peaceful assembly in recent years, giving police wider powers to detain protesters and the courts more power to prosecute them.

Arabia
Moody’s downgrades Bahraini bonds to junk
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Moody’s Investors Service has cut its outlook for the debt ratings of Saudi Arabia and three other Gulf states while lowering Bahrain’s rating to junk, citing concern over the impact of low oil prices on their finances.

Saudi Arabia’s Aa3 rating was placed on review for a possible downgrade, Moody’s said late on Friday, adding that it would study whether Riyadh’s efforts to expand its non-oil revenues and diversify its economy were likely to work.

“At around $650 billion (or roughly 95 percent of forecast 2016 grossdomestic product) at the end of September 2015, the country’s foreign currency assets are large,” it said.

“But potential calls on these funds are growing - emanating from the need to finance future current account and budget deficits, and from use in small-scale currency interventions to defend the currency peg amid rising speculation.”

Moody’s also put the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar on review for downgrades - countries which are widely seen in the debt markets as more able to cope with an era of low oil prices because of their huge financial reserves relative to small populations.

‘Structural shock’
It acknowledged that the UAE planned tax reforms and that its economy was more diversified than most in the region, but added: “The structural shock to the oil market is weakening the UAE’s government balance sheet and its economy, and therefore its credit profile.”

Moody’s cut Bahrain’s rating by one notch to Ba1, below investment grade. It kept the rating on review for a further downgrade; Bahrain has much smaller reserves of money and oil than its wealthy neighbors.

Central to the agency’s analysis was its view of oil prices. It said it had recently cut its forecasts for Brent crude to $33 per barrel in 2016 and $38 in 2017, rising slowly to US$48 by 2019. In December, it had predicted Brent at $43 in 2016.

Late last month, Moody’s cut the rating of Oman, the other member of the Gulf’s six wealthy oil exporters, by two notches to A3 and kept the rating on review for a further downgrade.

Moody’s actions followed a mass downgrade of oil producers by Standard & Poor’s in mid-February. S&P cut countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman. Saudi Arabia was cut by two notches to A-minus, three notches below Moody’s rating, while Bahrain was lowered to junk.

Indian priest kidnapped in Yemen retirement home attack
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Gunmen have kidnapped an Indian priest from an old people’s home they attacked last week in southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
killing at least 15 people, local government and security officials said on Sunday.

The Indian Foreign Minister announced on her twitter account an Indian national identified as Father Tom Uzhunnalil had been "kidnapped by turbans in Yemen."

The minister, Sushma Swaraj, added that officials in neighboring Djibouti were trying to ascertain the whereabouts of Father Uzhunnalil "so that we can secure his release."

Officials in the local government of Aden confirmed that the priest had been kidnapped and said authorities were investigating the attack.

No one grabbed credit for Friday’s assault in which four gunnies posing as relatives of one of the guests at the home burst inside, killing four Indian nuns, two Yemeni female staff members, eight elderly residents and a guard.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear, the official said.

"These terrorist acts have continued and have touched the innocent, the peaceful, the unarmed and religious figures," state news agency Saba said, quoting a source in the Aden office of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Migrants drown off Turkey, few allowed in Macedonia
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] At least 25 people drowned off the Turkish coast while trying to reach Greece on Sunday, while Macedonian authorities imposed further restrictions on refugees trying to cross the Greek border.

The Turkish coasties launched a search-and-rescue mission for other migrants colonists believed to be missing from the accident, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported, and rescued 15 off the Aegean Sea resort of Didim, it added.

The dead included three children, according to private Dogan news agency. Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
Greek police officials said Macedonian authorities are only allowing those from cities they consider to be affected by war to cross the Idomeni border crossing from Greece.

That means people from cities such as Aleppo in Syria, for example, can enter, but those from the Syrian capital of Damascus or the Iraqi capital of Baghdad are being stopped.

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak on the record.

A UN refugee agency official in Macedonia confirmed the new restrictions, and criticized the decision.

"This is not all right," said Ljubinka Brasnarska, UNHCR senior external relations assistant in Macedonia, told the AP. "Everybody from Syria who came needs international protection. This decision could be taken only by other competent international bodies, not by border authorities," she said, adding she couldn't explain the latest move.

Iran court sentences billionaire to death
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Iranian court has sentenced a well-known tycoon to death for corruption linked to oil sales during the rule of former President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad, the judiciary front man said Sunday.

Babak Zanjani and two of his associates were sentenced to death for "money laundering," among other charges, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi said in brief remarks broadcast on state TV. He did not identify the two associates.

Previous state media reports have said the three were charged with forgery and fraud.

"The court has recognized the three defendants as ‘corruptors on earth’ and sentenced them to death," said Ejehi. "Corruptors on earth" is an Islamic term referring to crimes that are punishable by death because they have a major impact on society. The verdict, which came after a nearly five-month trial, can be appealed.

A news website run by the judiciary identified the two associates as British-Iranian businessman Mahdi Shams, who was detained in 2015, and the other as Hamid Fallah Heravi, a retired businessman.

Zanjani was incarcerated

in 2013 during a crackdown on alleged corruption during Ahmadinejad’s rule. Iran’s Oil Ministry says Zanjani owes more than 2 billion euros ($2.25 billion) for oil sales he made on behalf of Ahmadinejad’s government.

Zanjani is one of Iran’s wealthiest businessmen, with a fortune worth an estimated $14 billion. He was arrested shortly after the election of President Hassan Rouhani, who ordered a crackdown on alleged corruption during the eight-year rule of his hard-line predecessor.

Iran has in the past executed other wealthy individuals found guilty of similar charges. In 2014, Iran executed billionaire businessman Mahafarid Amir Khosravi over corruption charges.

China deems ‘provocative’ US- South Korea military drills: Analyst
[Iran Press TV] The joint military exercises between the US and South Korea is aimed at reviving Cold War alliances and are seen by China as provocative actions, says political analyst William Jones.

He made the comments in a Sunday interview with Press TV about the upcoming two parallel annual drills - Key Resolve and Foal Eagle -- that will begin on Monday and involve over 300,000 South Korean troops and 15,000 US personnel.

About 2,100 US troops and a number of military warships have arrived in South Korea to partake in the war games, according to the Marine Corps Times.

Pyongyang regularly condemns the joint military exercises between Washington and Seoul as rehearsals for war against North Korea.

The US rejects any relationship between the North’s fourth nuclear test in January and its alleged satellite launch the next month, saying the drills were planned long before.

Pre-planned or not, "[the drills] always represent something of a provocative move," Jones said.

"What is happening now in terms of the US-South Korea relationship is provocative not only for North Korea, but also for China," the analyst said, arguing that Pyongyang was getting along with Beijing to calm the Korean peninsula before Washington floated deploying advanced missile systems to South Korea.

Gunmen ambush an ambulance, kill three in Egypt’s Sinai
[Iran Press TV] Gunmen have shot and killed a medic and two members of Egypt’s security forces who had been maimed in a bombing attack and were in an ambulance en route to a hospital in the country’s restive Sinai Peninsula.

According to a senior Egyptian security officer who was speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, the incident occurred in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, located about 334 kilometers (207 miles) northeast of the capital, Cairo, on Sunday, when the ambulance was ambushed.

The two security forces had been injured in a blast that had targeted their armored vehicle earlier.

"When the ambulance left the site of the blast with the maimed security members, it came under attack from gunnies," the officer said.

"Two maimed security personnel and a medic were killed in the ambush," he added.

Mahmud Amer, the head of the North Sinai ambulance service, also confirmed the death of the medic in the attack but did not provide details.

No group or individual has so far grabbed credit for either acts of violence.

The Sinai Peninsula has been under a state of emergency since October 2014, following a deadly terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 33 soldiers.

Over the past years, hard boyz have been carrying out anti-government activities and deadly attacks, taking advantage of the turmoil caused in Egypt after democratically-elected President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the military in July 2013.

Velayat Sinai turbans have carried out most of the attacks, mainly targeting the army and police.

US troops now training elite Philippine police unit
[Inquirer] U.S. troops are now training members of the elite Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police on combat tactics. Chief Supt. Randolf Delfin said the 45-day training program would equip SAF members with more skills "in our fight against insurgency and terrorism."

Delfin's statements drew angry reactions from the left saying the police officer confirmed what they had long held — American government involvement in Philippine counterinsurgency operations.

Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said, "We condemn this continuing US interventionist policy."

He said US military operations in the Philippines, "like this one disguised as a supposed training, are in fact among the causes of rebellion" by past and present-day revolutionaries.

Kim Gargar, spokesperson of environmentalist group Panalipdan, said the use of US troops to train policemen against insurgents is "pure and simple foreign military intervention."

"By allowing this, the Aquino government is guilty of violating the Constitution," Gargar said.

Supt. Reynard Arino said at least 60 SAF men would participate in the training program with courses on marksmanship and small unit tactics.

Last month, US soldiers also started training SAF men on tactical combat care or life-saving support, according to Chief Supt. Miguel Antonio Jr., head of the Western Mindanao police.

Europe
NATO expands Aegean refugee mission
NATO announced Sunday it will expand its mission in the Aegean to crack down on human smugglers and stem the flow of refugees coming into Europe, according to Anadolu.
NATO is still looking for a mission 25 years later...
In a statement, the alliance said: "NATO ships are already collecting information and conducting monitoring in the Aegean Sea. Their activity will now be expanded to take place also in territorial waters".

Last month, NATO agreed – at the request of Turkey, Germany, and Greece – to send its vessels to the Aegean, a major transit area for refugees entering Europe via Greece and Turkey. The decision was finalized on Sunday, with NATO allies agreeing the vessels will not only operate on international waters, but in Turkish and Greek territorial waters as well.

"Our commanders have defined our area of activity in close consultation and coordination with both Greece and Turkey," NATO said in Sunday’s statement.

"Our activities in territorial waters will be carried out in consultation and coordination with both allies."

NATO will liaise with the Turkish and Greek coast guards, who have been struggling to protect and save refugees put at risk by human-smuggling gangs that place them on often unseaworthy bats.

India police detain three after mob torches church
[Iran Press TV] Police have detained at least three suspects after a gang attacked a church in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, officials say.

Chief Badri Narayan, a local police chief, said on Sunday that law enforcement agencies tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
at least three men over the attack, which took place in Kachna village near Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh.

"A preliminary case has been registered against the miscreants for rioting and defiling a place of worship," said Meena.

A massive manhunt is underway to detain other suspects believed to be involved in the assault, the police chief added.

Several women and kiddies were maimed after a group of about 50 men barged into the church during Sunday mass.

Local residents and witnesses said that the crowd of young men stormed into the church demanding that the Christian place of worship be shut down.

"About 40-50 people, who had covered their faces with cloth, attacked the gathering and damaged the chair and musical instruments," AFP quoted Shiv Kumar, a witness, as saying.

Some sources say that the assailants were furious because they had heard the church had been used to convert local villagers to Christianity.

16 Syrian troops die in rebel attack in Latakia
LATAKIA – Syrian rebel fighters launched on Sunday an offensive on headquarters of the regime’s troops in the coastal province of Latakia –heartland of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

At least 16 pro-Assad soldiers were killed and 30 more wounded in the attack, according to the Army of Conquest–main rebel group fighting in western Syria.

“Our fighters infiltrated into the strongholds of pro-Assad troops in the town of Kallz in Kanssaba sub-district in Latakia countryside, after bombing the regime’s headquarters with dozens o mortars and rockets,” spokesman for the Army of Conquest Ali Turkmani told ARA News in Latakia.

The Syrian regime’s army forces had recently recaptured the town of Kallz after battles with rebel factions there. However, clashes resumed to the area after the rebels started fighting back using heavy weapons.

“We have detained three soldiers after killing 16 and wounding over 30 others. Our fighters have also seized a large deal of ammunition and weapons,” Turkmani said.

The clashes reportedly continued until Sunday midnight, before rebels of the Army of Conquest (aka Jaish al-Fatih) retreated from the town “without suffering any losses”, according to the spokesman.

An officer in the Syrian army, who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity, confirmed the rebels’ offensive in Latakia on Sunday, insisting that the army was able to repel the attack, without giving further information on their losses.

MNLF fighter kills Abu Sayyaf militant in Sulu
[GMA News] An Abu Sayyaf militant was killed on Friday morning in an ambush staged by a Moro National Liberation Front fighter in Indanan town in Sulu. Police identified the slain insurgent as Darwin Abduhadi.

A police investigation showed that MNLF fighter Dungan Hamdani ambushed Abduhadi and two other companions in Sitio Talibang. Abduhadi was killed on the spot while Hamdani was slightly wounded in the firefight. Police said Abduhadi's companions were able to fire back at Hamdani, who manged to escape.

Police say retaliation could be the motive for the ambush. Last February 19, Hamdani's group clashed with Abduhadi's.

US bank expects decline in non-OPEC oil supply
US JP Morgan bank lowered its global oil supply estimates by 0.4 million barrels per day (bpd) to 96.4 million bpd, with the drop in non-OPEC supply only partially offset by higher OPEC estimates. In 2017, analysts of the bank forecast further global oil supply contraction of 0.5 million bpd amounting to 95.9 million bpd.

“Lower US, Canadian and European supply estimates are incorporated based on our view that low prices are starting to have an increased impact on the financial ability of producers to sustain production,” JP Morgan’s analysts said in a report obtained by Trend.

Non-OPEC oil supply is expected by the analysts to decline by 0.9 million bpd to 54.7 million bpd in 2016 and by 1 million bpd to 53.7 million bpd in 2017.

“Low prices have certainly started to feed through into lower non-OPEC supply growth, albeit not yet sufficiently to rebalance markets, analysts said. However, the process appears to be underway and building momentum. Consequently, it still seems premature for Saudi Arabia and others to look to support prices at this juncture.”

JP Morgan forecasts OPEC oil production at 32.2 million bpd both in 2016 and 2017 compared to 31.5 million bpd in 2015.

Cartel's 13 members produced 32.335 million bpd in January, about 130,700 bpd more than December 2015, according to OPEC’s latest report. The official quota for OPEC oil production stands at 30 million bpd.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea threatens to nuke South, US over war games
[Iran Press TV] North Korea has threatened "indiscriminate" nuclear strikes against the US and South Korea if they go ahead with joint military drills scheduled to commence on Monday.

The announcement was made via an early Monday statement released by North's National Defense Commission, citing the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army (KPA).

"The indiscriminate nuclear strike... will clearly show those keen on aggression and war, the military mettle of (North Korea),"said the statement.

Thousands of South Korean and US forces are slated to take part in the upcoming the annual war games, dubbed "Foal Eagle" and "Key Resolve."

In the statement, Pyongyang claimed the exercises are "undisguised nuclear war drills" which threaten the North's national illusory sovereignty, warning of an all-out attack in response to "even the slightest military action."

"If we push the buttons to annihilate the enemies even right now, all bases of provocations will be reduced to seas in flames and ashes in a moment," it added.

Earlier, the North slammed drills, saying Washington would be held accountable for "igniting war."

Azerbaijan won’t increase oil output in 2016
Azerbaijan intends to keep the oil production in 2016 at the 2015 level, head of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Rovnag Abdullayev said in an interview with ANS TV channel. He noted that the projects for increasing the production volume have already been suspended.

“The oil output in Azerbaijan won’t exceed last year’s level,” said Abdullayev.

SOCAR produced 8.16 million tons of oil in 2015, compared to 8.32 million tons in 2014. In total, 41.59 million tons of oil was produced in Azerbaijan in 2015, compared to 42.02 million tons in 2014, according to the company. The country produced around 0.8 million barrels of oil per day in 2015.

Afghanistan
Afghan president: ISIS being wiped out in Afghanistan
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
said on Sunday that the ISIS group has been defeated in the eastern parts of the country, where it had taken over some remote districts.

Speaking at the opening of parliament, Ghani said Afghan forces had dislodged ISIS loyalists from regions of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province bordering Pakistain.

"Afghanistan will be their graveyard," he said in an address broadcast live on national television.

ISIS has had a presence in Afghanistan for more than a year. Officials have said most snuffies calling themselves ISIS are disaffected Taliban fighters.

Afghan forces have claimed victory following a 21-day operation in the Achin and Shinwar districts of Nangarhar, claiming at least 200 snuffies killed, a provincial official told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Achin and Shinwar are among a number of districts in the remote mountainous regions along the Pakistain border that were overtaken by ISIS loyalists in recent months. Operations against the snuffies included Arclight airstrikes to destroy bases and a radio station that was broadcasting ISIS recruitment messages across Nangarhar province. The radio station was destroyed, along with at least seven bully boys, on Feb. 1.

"The aim of the operation in Nangarhar was to root out IS from the area," said Afghan Army Lt. Col Sharin Aqa, a front man for the 201 Corps.

The operation was aided by local residents who set up checkpoints to help maintain security in their villages. These so-called "local uprisings" had supplemented the Afghan forces, which have been stretched since the drawdown in 2014 of the international combat mission, he said.

US builds two air bases in Kurdish-controlled north Syria: Kurdish report
[AlAhram] The United States has nearly finished setting up an air base in Kurdish-controlled northern Syria and was proceeding with the construction of a second base for dual military and civilian use, a Kurdish website said on Sunday.

The Erbil-based news website BasNews, quoting a military source in the Kurdish-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), said most of the work on a runway in the oil town of Rmeilan in Hasaka was complete while a new air base southeast of Kobani, straddling the Turkish border, was being constructed.

The source in the US-backed alliance that also includes Arab gangs told the news portal scores of US experts and technicians were involved in the project.

Syrian Kurdish officials had recently said the Rmeilan airstrip was being used by US military helicopters for logistics and deliveries.

The United States sent dozens of special operations troops to northern Syria last year to advise opposition forces in their fight against the myrmidon group Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
. They have also dropped supply munitions to rebels in the province.

Last month, US advisors backed by coalition air strikes assisted Kurdish-led Syrian rebels in encircling and capturing the strategic Syrian town of Shadadi from Islamic State group but were away from the frontlines, US officials said.

The Syrian Kurds have established control over wide areas of northern Syria since the country erupted into civil war in 2011, and their YPG militia has become a major partner in the US-led coalition against IS.

US military ties with the Syrian Kurds have grown deeper despite the concerns of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
ally The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which views the Syrian Kurdish PYD party as a terrorist group because of its links to the PKK, which is waging an insurgency in Turkey.

The special US presidential envoy to the coalition against Islamic State, Brett McGurk, visited Kurdish-controlled northern Syria several weeks ago in what appeared to be the first declared trip to Syrian territory by an B.O. regime official in three years.

McGurk said on Saturday in Baghdad the coalition was stepping up pressure on Islamic State and that the murderous Moslems were losing ground in both Syria and Iraq.

Delhi, Guj, J&K on high alert
[Daily Excelsior] Delhi was today put on high alert after Police received inputs that 10 suspected LeT and JeM murderous Moslems believed to have entered India from Pakistain through Gujarat
...where rioting seems to be a traditional passtime...
may have sneaked into the national capital for an attack even as four elite NSG teams were rushed to the western State.

On the eve of ‘Maha Shivratri’ festival, Gujarat as well as other metros and Jammu and Kashmire were also on high alert with raids conducted at Kutch and other places, security being beefed up at vital installations, sensitive areas and at all main temples including the famous Somnath temple where a NSG team has been deployed.

The Gir-Somnath district authorities have postponed tomorrow’s cultural event at Somnath temple owing to the terror threat.

In Kolkata, security has been stepped up at NSC Bose International Airport after an e-mail threat that it would be blown up within 24 hours, airport officials said.

The e-mail came in the airport manager’s ID early today and it was claimed to have been sent from Germany, they said.

In the national capital, security was beefed up at vital installations, important buildings and crowded places after Delhi Police received inputs about a potential terror strike in the city. A constant vigil was maintained near prominent malls, hospitals, schools and colleges.

A police source said the input specifically mentions about 10 forces of Evil of Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
(JeM) outfits having entered India via Gujarat and that they could carry out a terror strike in Delhi.

The Special Cell and Crime Branch of Delhi Police have been briefed about the input separately, so that activities of gangs operating in and around the city and elements with suspected terror links can be monitored.

The police are also ensuring that CCTV cameras at all places with high footfall, like popular markets in the city and metro stations are functional. Patrolling across the city has been intensified,

Security has been ramped up at major religious sites in Gujarat like Somnath Temple and Akshardham and in metro cities -- Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.

Vital installations across the metros like railway stations and airports are also being secured.

An Advisory has been issued to enhance security at all strategic locations, sensitive industrial sites and religious places in Gujarat after intelligence inputs suggested that the murderous Moslems have entered the state taking the sea route, official sources said.

Gujarat DGP P C Thakur held a meeting with NSG officials in Gandhinagar and announced that one team will be sent to step up security at Somnath temple in Gir-Somnath district. Thakur issued orders late last night cancelling leave of all coppers.

"Four teams of NSG reached here(Gandhinagar) last night. Out of these, three will remain here, while one team will go to Somnath," he said. The size of each team could vary between 50 to 90 personnel.

Hizb comdr killed, soldier injured in Kulgam
[Daily Excelsior] Hizbul Mujahideen top commander, Dawood Sheikh, was killed and an Army jawan was injured in a shootout at village Bichru in South Kashmire’s Kulgam district tonight.

The Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmire Police, Kulgam and Army’s 1 and 9 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) this evening received information about presence of two gunnies of Hizbul Mujahideen in village Bichru of Kulgam.

As the security forces cordoned off the village, gunnies opened fire on them injuring one soldier. He has been removed to the 92-Base Hospital at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar where his condition is said to be stable.

Security forces had information about presence of two gunnies in the village but as soon as the shootout started the residents of the area gathered near the encounter site and pelted stones at the police and Army. Reports said that this led to the fleeing of Shabir Ahmad, associate of Dawood. Security forces exercised restraint but trapped Dawood in a house after he was injured while trying to flee.

DIG South Kashmire, Nitish Kumar told Excelsior that one Lion of Islam identified as Dawood Sheikh alias Chotu of Rishipora Qaimoh was killed by security forces in the shootout.

Dawood was one of the most wanted gunnies in the district and was involved in several militancy related incidents. He was A+ category Lion of Islam and was active for several years in South Kashmire. One AK-47 rifle was recovered from the encounter site.

The DIG said that the Dawood was involved in the killing of an Army man of 162-Territorial Army (TA), Gowhar Ahmad Matoo son of Bashir Ahmad Matoo resident of Ganjipora Kulgam on July 16, 2014. "He was also involved in the killing of National Conference worker and Panchayat member, Haji Gul Mohammad Bhat son of Abdul Gani Bhat of Wanpoh in Kulgam on May 28, 2014", he added.

Two cases (FIR No 153/14 U/S 307, 302 RPC and 7/27 Arms Act and FIR No 95/14 U/S 307 RPC and 7/27 Arms Act) were registered against him for the killing of Matoo and Bhat.

Kumar said that the Lion of Islam was also involved in the killing of Bashir Ahmad Dar, a retired Deputy Superinte-ndent of Police at Ashmujee in district Kulgam on July 15, 2015.

The two mortar cycle borne gunnies including Dawood, were waiting outside the Masjid when Dar came out and they fired several rounds at him from their AK-47 rifle. Dar critically maimed and was removed to the Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for treatment where he died.

This is the second success for the security forces in South Kashmire against the Hizbul Mujahideen in last four days.

On Thursday three gunnies of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a shootout with Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmire Police in Tral area of South Kashmire’s Pulwama district.

The encounter took place in Mir Mohalla in Dadsara village of Tral. The dead gunnies have been identified as Aasif Yousuf of Dadsara Tral, Ishaq Parray of Laribal Tral and Aashiq Hussain of Chersoo village of Awantipora of the Hizbul Mujahideen.

Security forces this year achieved major success against gunnies in Kashmire killing 21 gunnies including 15 from LeT and 6 of Hizbul Mujahideen so far. This is highest number of gunnies killed in the first 65 days of the year in recent years.

Egypt: Hamas, Brotherhood involved in assassination of top prosecutor
[AlAhram] The Egyptian interior minister said on Sunday that leaders of the Moslem Brüderbund in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and the group's Paleostinian offshoot Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, were behind the liquidation of top prosecutor Hisham Barakat on 29 June, 2015.

Barakat died from injuries sustained in a Cairo kaboom; the only successful liquidation attempt against a state official since an upswing in turban violence following the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghafar said that Turkish-based leaders of the Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, criminal masterminded the liquidation, while Hamas "provided training for gunnies to execute it and also took part in planning it."

"We intercepted electronic communications in a way that had never been done in the history of the Egyptian security apparatus," Abdel-Ghafar told a news conference.

"There is a major conspiracy targeting the Egyptian state... It began a long while ago and included a number of turban attacks, including the liquidation of prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat."

Abdel-Ghafar said that Hamas was not involved in the operation within Egypt, but planned and provided training for gunnies in Gazoo.

Hamas denial
Hamas expressed dismay at Abdel-Ghafar's accusations, with front man Sami Abu Zuhri
...a senior spokesman for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gaza. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest...
describing them as "untrue".

He was quoted by the group's website as saying that Abdel-Ghafar’s claims are not in line with "the efforts exerted to develop relations between Hamas and Cairo."

He also called on Egyptian officials "not to involve Paleostinian factions in internal domestic disagreements."

Egyptian officials have more than once linked Hamas to terror acts in Egypt, which spiked following the toppling of Morsi in 2013.

Though Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group affiliate Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis grabbed credit for a large number of turban attacks in Egypt over the past two years, no one has grabbed credit for Barakat's liquidation.

Abdel-Ghafar added that police had identified a number of apartments across the country where gunnies were manufacturing explosives.

"All of those enjugged
Please don't kill me!
were referred to the prosecution... they all admitted to being Brotherhood members," Abdel-Ghafar said.

During the conference, a video was played showing testimonies of a group of people admitting to being involved in terror activities.

They said that the liquidation was initially planned for 28 June but was called off after the turbans’ "tracking unit" informed the others that Barakat's convoy was not taking its usual path.

The suspects said that former health ministry spokesperson and now-runaway Yehia Moussa told them to "prepare themselves" for the planned liquidation of Barakat.

Some of the men said they had received training from Hamas in Gazoo, including in "tracking" and "planned operations."

Six detained in connection with killing of Egypt's top prosecutor last year

[AlAhram] Egypt's general prosecution ordered the detention of six suspects for 15 days pending investigation into charges of killing the prosecutor-general in June 2015, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Sunday.

The defendants, who were nabbed
Please don't kill me!
on Saturday, are the first to be identified as suspects in the murder.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh arrests three suspected militants
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Bangladesh’s elite anti-terrorism unit detained on Sunday three suspected members of a myrmidon group believed to be behind a spate of recent attacks in the south Asian country.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh has seen a rise in Islamist violence in which liberal activists, members of minority Muslim sects and other religious groups have been targeted.

The detainees were members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
The JMB is said to be the youth front of Al Mujahideen, the parent organization that began working toward establishing Bangladesh as an Islamic state in the mid 1990s which remains obscure even today. Other organizations, such as Jama'atul Jihad, JMB, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI), Hizbut Tawhid, Tawhidi Janata, Islami Jubo Shangha, Islami Shangha, Al Falah A'am Unnayan Shanstha and Shahadat-e al Hiqma are believed to be part of the Al Mujahideen network. The JMB at its peak was reported to contain at least 100,000 members, and an alleged 2,000-man suicide brigade, few of whom actually exploded. JMB allegedly received financial assistance from individual donors in Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Reports have claimed that funding of JMB by international NGOs like Kuwait based Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) and Doulatul Kuwait, Saudi Arabia based Al Haramaine Islamic Institute and Rabita Al Alam Al Islami, Qatar Charitable Society and UAE-based Al Fuzaira and Khairul Ansar Al Khairia. The top leadership of JMB was captured in 2005 and hung in 2007, which pretty much shot their bolt.
and were jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in a raid conducted in the northwestern district of Rajshahi, said Rumman Mahmud, a deputy director of the Rapid Action Battalion.

Sixteen crude bombs, seven petrol bombs and krazed killer books were also found in their possession, he added.

The group is believed to be behind attacks such as the bombings of a Shi'ite shrine and the killing of two foreigners.

ISIS has grabbed credit for some of the attacks, including the killing of a Hindu priest last month, but the government has denied the myrmidon group has a presence in Bangladesh.

At least five snuffies of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen have been killed in shootouts since November, as security forces stepped up a crackdown on Islamist snuffies seeking to make the moderate Muslim nation of 160 million a sharia-based state.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
An Arab blockade of Iran's Hezbollah
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A political and legal decisiveness on the part of the Arab world is besieging the Lebanese Hezbollah party, which is affiliated to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. There is a wall being built which is getting stiffer and higher with every passing minute.

Hours after the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries declared Hezbollah, its branches, affiliates and leaders as "terrorist group" -- without separating the military and political wings like the Europeans, the Council of Arab interior ministers agreed with the decision. Leb and Iraq, however, were not party to this decision.

These Gulf and Arab measures are not going to end at this point. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must also take a decision so that any subsequent international effort in this direction stands on solid grounds.

Hezbollah’s was rightly described during the Arab interior ministers’ statement in Tunisia as an entity that is "destabilizing the Arab region." It is adept at establishing terror networks and outlawed gangs, diffusing toxic propaganda and training murderers all over the Arab world. Probably its worst is yet to come.

It is just that the mask has now fallen off, revealing the threat posed by Iran to the security of the Arab world and many other countries around the Islamic world.

Similar response
Hezbollah’s reaction to the announcement was expected to be similar to that of its allies. Through its parliamentary bloc -- The Loyalty to the Resistance
That'd be the Hezbullies, natch...
Bloc -- it targeted Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
even though the decision was taken by the entire GCC. It was alleged that the GCC’s decision is a starting point for the development of Saudi-Israeli relations.

The Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
movement denounced the decision to ban Hezbollah. In its political council statement, Yemen’s Houthis said the decision is "reckless and serves the interests of the angry Zionist entity and its tools in the region."

"Leb’s Hezbollah is the vanguard of resistance against the Zionist regime (Israel) and Iran is proud of the group," Iranian state TV quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as saying.

Gulf countries had considered charging Hezbollah with terrorism in 2013 but a consensus could not be developed. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
latest developments show that Gulf citizens, including Kuwaitis, have started to sense the threat Hezbollah poses to regional security.

The Arab problem with Hezbollah is that it is a source of military training and permanent internal strife, especially with its attempts to monopolize Shiite representation across borders.

Hezbollah is now under Arab siege. Hassan Nasrallah’s numerous speeches are of no use in this situation. The matter at hand is more serious than mere speeches.

The Grand Turk
EU warns Turkey over seizure of Zaman newspaper
Follow-up.
EU High Representative Federica Mogherini linked Turkish authorities’ takeover of a leading newspaper to the country’s EU aspirations Saturday, warning any prospective member of the Union must respect “high democratic standards.”

Protesters outside the offices of the Zaman newspaper in Istanbul were met with tear gas and rubber bullets Saturday, after a court ruled Friday that the daily, with a circulation of 650,000, be run by administrators. State media reported the decision came at the request of a prosecutor investigating Fethullah Gülen, who is affiliated to Zaman and one of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s main opponents, on terrorism charges. U.S.-based Gülen denies the charges.

“The EU has repeatedly stressed that Turkey, as a candidate country, needs to respect and promote high democratic standards and practices, including freedom of the media,” Mogherini said in a statement. “Free, diverse and independent media constitute one of the cornerstones of a democratic society by facilitating the free flow of information and ideas, and by ensuring transparency and accountability.”
And we all know how powerful a warning from the EU is...
Johannes Hahn, the EU’s enlargement commissioner, tweeted that the decision to takeover the paper risked progress Turkey has made in other areas towards joining the bloc.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz said he would raise the issue with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu over lunch at a summit on Monday aimed at stemming the flow of migrants into Europe. Turkey is a key part of the plan, with the EU pledging €3 billion in aid in exchange for Ankara’s help.
And if Yippy sez that if you bother him one more time about the newspaper that he'll open the spigots on the refugee flow, what then?
The Saturday edition of Zaman, completed before authorities took over, carried the headline: “The Constitution is suspended.”

The U.S. State Department called the move “troubling” on Friday. Spokesman John Kirby told reporters: “We see this as the latest in a series of troubling judicial and law enforcement actions taken by the Turkish government targeting media outlets and others critical of it.”
You have to believe that there are some in our own government taking notes...

#1  Too little, too late. Zama is now turning out pro Erdogan propaganda. Turkey has no free press and no voice for the opposition anymore. Erdogan wants to be Sultan and will destroy the republic Atatürk built. He has turned his back on the west. It is time for Europe, UK and the US consider Turkey an hostile regime and treat it as such. Close bases, take weaponry with you, do not sell arm to Erdogan, withdraw aid, limit trade.

Terrorist shelling of Aleppo kills 13, wounds 40
At least 13 civilians died and 40 were wounded in artillery shelling by terrorist groups at a northern residential district of Aleppo in northwestern Syria, a military source told RIA Novosti, according to Sputnik.

"The terrorists opened heavy fire on the Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood in Aleppo. Thirteen civilians were killed, 40 people were hospitalized with injuries," the source said.

The largest city in Syria has been subject to intense shelling since the ceasefire between government and rebel forces came into force on February 27.

The Nusra Front terrorist group, exempt alongside the Islamic State from the Russia-US brokered ceasefire, is believed to be behind the latest attack.

Europe
Germany urged to impose limit on refugee numbers
[Iran Press TV] Austria has called on Germany to set restrictions on the number of refugees it will allow to enter its territory in an effort to help curb the flow of refugees flocking to Europe.

"Germany too must give a number for the refugees it is prepared to take from the Syria and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
region. Germany must finally create clarity or else refugees will continue to head off in the direction of Germany," Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann told the Kurier newspaper on Sunday.

Austria has introduced restrictions on accepting refugees. It accepts only 80 refugees per day and allows 3,200 refugees to transit the country each day. It received 90,000 asylum requests last year.

"If you take the Austrian guidelines, Germany could give its quota at around 400,000. As long as Germany does not say that, it is clear what will happen. The refugees will continue to believe that they will be waved through," Faymann added.

Yes, the Aircraft Carrier Is Still Viable
[The Diplomat] Over the last several months, the debate about the future of the United States’ nuclear-powered carrier (CVN) fleet has picked up speed again, with several major contributions coming from both sides of the aisle. Back in October, Seth Cropsey, Bryan McGrath, and Timothy Walton published their very detailed take on how to keep the carrier weapon system in the game. Not long after, well-known carrier critic Jerry Hendrix followed up on his earlier thinking on the subject in Retreat from Range: The Rise and Fall of Carrier Aviation. Most recently, Kelley Sayler contributed a study on the Growing Threat to U.S. Aircraft Carriers. The issue was also discussed at length in House Armed Services Committee hearings on February 11, 2016.

While the debate revolves around the viability of the carrier and its future roles (if any), it is inevitably bound up with current events in the Asia-Pacific, including China’s continuing militarization of the South China Sea. As People’s Liberation Army (PLA) anti-access and area denial capabilities continue to grow in density and sophistication, and as the underlying technologies spread to other actors, Sayler and other skeptics argue, they will "plac[e] greater constraints on U.S. carrier operations than ever before." In the following I will argue that this amounts to a major distortion of the U.S. Navy’s historical experience, and of the evolution of the capital ship more generally -- one that needs to be addressed if the U.S. is to make realistic choices about its future naval force structure in the coming years.
Posted by: Besoeker || 03/07/2016 00:00 || Comments || Link || E-Mail|| [3 views] Top|| File under:

#1  The problems associated with the South China Sea are not best solved with sea based naval power. Instead they should be addressed with land based naval aviation and satellites.

As for every other place we want to deploy force, the air craft carrier is good. It can dump $10K bombs on targets that destroyers and submarines need to use $10M cruise missiles on. So, fundamentally, it is an expensive delivery system for cheap bombs. And since it lasts for about 50 years, it is really not that expensive. Less than $100M per year in capital costs.

On a cost benefit basis, if a carrier delivers somewhere between 10-100 bombs on enemy stuff during a year, then it is straight up cheaper than every other ship in the fleet. And that doesn't count the FUD factor it causes in our opponents' plans.

As per VARIOUS OLDER NET NEWS ARTICS, the East China Sea is Japan's #1 National Security problem + focii, while TAIWAN as above is Mainland China's = Beijing's.

I have argued or said that China will NOT allow or accept any de facto or formal Inter-Korean Reunification between NOKOR + SOKOR [DPRK + ROK] unless it first gets back Taiwan, + that Pudgy = NOKOR is well-aware of this. IFF THE COLD WAR "STATUA QUO" ON THE KOREAN PENINSULA + NE ASIA DOES NOT CHANGE, IT IS MORE LIKELY THAN NOT THAT MAINLAND CHINA, AS NOKOR'S ALREADY PREDOMINANT TRADING PARTNER [read, "Sole"], WILL SE ITS EXCESSIVE SHARE IN BILATERAL TRADE WID NOKOR RISE TO NEW HEIGHTS POTEN EVEN TO NEAR OR AT 100%. Iff the latter occurs, it won't be long for China = Beijing to formally take over the NOKOR Govt + Army.

CHINA WILL TOTALLY CONTROL NOKOR IF NOT ANNEX IT AS A ITS NEW NE CHINA SOVEREIGN PROVINCE.

The Kim Regime doesn't want any takeover of NOKOR by China for any reason, and neither does SOKOR.

#10  Yes, I remember, back in 69 or so, that we ran a simula90 9tion of nuclear war with the carrier my air wing was assigned to blasting off its planes. We figured we had about 90 minutes or so AFTER the launch codes were sent to exist; then we would be some radioactive dust settling on the sea bottom. But, the planes would have launched and a lot of other places would be radioactive as well. Yet, the carriers are still able to project power, not just bombs, over a very wide expanse of the ocean and the world.

Iraq
Death toll soars in Baghdad suicide bomb attack
Still at the fog of war stage...
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A jacket wallah on Sunday rammed his explosives-laden fuel truck into a security checkpoint south of Baghdad, killing at least 47 people and wounding dozens, officials said, the latest episode in an uptick in violence in the war-ravaged country.

No one immediately grabbed credit for the attack, which bore the hallmarks of ISIS.

ISIS and other Sunni snuffies frequently use boom-mobiles and suicide kabooms to target public areas and government buildings in their bid to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

Among the dead were 39 civilians, while the rest were members of the security forces. The attacker struck shortly after noon when the checkpoint at one of the entrances to the city of Hillah was crowded with dozens of cars, a police officer said.

He added that up to 65 other people were maimed and nearly 50 cars were damaged. Hillah is located about 95 kilometers (60 miles) south of Baghdad.

A medical official confirmed the causality figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

64 die in truck bomb attack in Babylon

(IraqiNews.com) Babylon – Babylon Police Commander Maj. Gen. Ali Hassan Kawa announced on Sunday, that 64 people had been either killed or wounded in a suicide bombing targeted a checkpoint in northern Hilla area.

Maj. Gen. Ali Hassan Kawa said in a press statement obtained by IraqiNews.com, “A booby-trapped truck driven by a suicide bomber exploded, at noon today, in Atar checkpoint at the entrance of the ancient city of Babylon (7 km north of Hilla), killing seven people and wounding 57 others, including security personnel, in addition to destructing the checkpoint completely.”

Kawa added, “Ambulances transferred the injured to nearby hospitals in Mahaweel and Hilla areas and the dead bodies to the forensic medicine department.”
Rudaw adds:
The checkpoint outside of Hillah is usually clogged by traffic jams which explains the high casualty count.

ISIS claims Sunday Baghdad bombing

[KhaleejTimes] Daesh claimed responsibility for a suicide truck bomb blast that killed at least 47 people on Sunday south of Baghdad. In a statement posted on social media, Daesh named the splodydope bomber who detonated his explosives-laden truck at a checkpoint outside the city of Hilla as Abu Islam Al Ansari.

"The battle has just begun and that the worst is yet to come," the statement said.

The group claimed that the explosion had killed and wounded "more than 90" people. The attack was the deadliest bombing by Daesh in Iraq this year.

Shin Bet nabs Palestinian suspected of recruiting terrorists in Cairo
[IsraelTimes] Najib Mustafa Nazal, 33, accused of drafting students to jihadist group, sending them to Gazoo for training

The Shin Bet security service announced Sunday that it has tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
a Paleostinian man suspected of recruiting Paleostinians in Egypt, sending them to the Gazoo Strip for terror training, and then helping them enter the West Bank in order to carry out attacks against Israeli targets.

In a statement, the Shin Bet identified the suspect as Najib Mustafa Nazal, 33, of Qabatiya, near the West Bank city of Jenin. He is said to have moved to Cairo in 2007 for academic studies, but was arrested in the West Bank at the end of January.

Nazal, the statement said, is affiliated with the al-Mujahideen Brigades, a fundamentalist offshoot of the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
’s Fatah party now linked to the rival Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terror group.

"In recent years, activists in the organization have carried out several terror attacks against Israeli targets, including firing rockets at Israel and attempting to catalyze terror activity within Israel’s borders," the Shin Bet said.

"It is an organization that maintains ties with Hamas," the statement continued, specifying training, arms deliveries, cash infusions and other forms of assistance.

Nazal told his interrogators that during his time in Egypt, he recruited West Bank Paleostinians who were also students there, sent them to Gazoo for training, and then helped them return to the West Bank in order to "establish a military infrastructure there," the Shin Bet said.

Nazal’s Cairo apartment was allegedly used as a hub of sorts, hosting meetings between activists in various terror groups, including Hamas.
