Russians may give money/weapons to PKK but would not participate directly.
Why would ISIS attack it's benefactors?
Nobody criticized Turkey treatment of Kurds recently, so why false flag?

Smartly Stupid
The infrastructure of manufactured intelligence has become a truly impressive thing. Today as never before there is an industry dedicated, not to educating people, but to making them feel smart. From paradigm shifting TED talks by thought leaders and documentaries by change agents that promise to transform your view of the world, manufactured intelligence has become its own culture.

...Smart once used to be an unreachable quality. Einstein was proclaimed a genius, because it was said that no one understood his theories. Those were undemocratic times when it was assumed that the eggheads playing with the atom had to be a lot smarter than us or we were in big trouble.

Intelligence has since been democratized. Smart has been redistributed. Anyone can get an A for effort. And the impulse of manufactured intelligence is not smart people, but people who make us feel smart.

Intelligence to a modern liberal isn't depth, it's appearance. It isn't even an intellectual quality, but a spiritual quality. Compassionate people who care about others are always "smarter", no matter how stupid they might be, because they care about the world around them.

...Liberal intelligence exists on the illusion of its self-worth. The magical thinking that guides it in every other area from economics to diplomacy also convinces it that if it believes it is smart, that it will be. The impenetrable liberal consensus in every area is based on this delusion of intelligence. Every policy is right because it's smart and it's smart because it's progressive and it's progressive because smart progressives say that it is.

Wizard of Oz: Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma.

We've are seeing this arrogance play out on the left today and we have seen it before. In other words, the lemmings march over the cliff in lock step. Where's the intelligence, thought, compassion, and diversity in that? Lenin had a phrase for these folks--"useful idiots."

#3  I've been saying this for 20 years. Reading the NYT makes you *feel* smart. They leave out all the important bits, but if that's your only source of information you'll never notice.

Oregon Governor Signs Law Effectively Outlawing Coal Energy
[CNS News] With the stroke of Gov. Kate Brown’s signature Friday, Oregon became the first state to eradicate coal from its power supply through legislation and now boasts some of the most stringent demands for renewable energy among its state peers.

The new law will wipe out coal-generated energy in phases through 2030 and requires utilities to provide half of customers’ power with renewable sources by 2040, doubling the state’s previous standard.

Oregon GOP lawmakers, the minority party in both statehouse chambers, went to great lengths to stop the measure with tactics that slowed down the entire legislative process. The GOP raised concerns about cost increases to consumers’ energy bills and questioned whether the environmental benefits were overstated.

"Today, Gov. Brown gave her stamp of approval to a new renewable energy mandate that will cost residential electricity customers in Oregon $190 more each year until 2040," Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli, among the law’s most outspoken opponents, said Friday.

He argued the law "lines the pockets of the green energy industry at the expense of working Oregonians who get nothing in return."

Also, they only have the hydroelectric power because the Feds built the plant for them and they have advantageous geography. THey should be forced to redistribute their carbon-tax-free electricity to states that weren't so fortunate in the carbon-tax-lottery and are more geographically challenged, like Kansas or Florida. Or maybe Louisiana

Is It Really A.D.H.D. or Just Immaturity?
h/t Instapundit
New research shows that the youngest students in a classroom are more likely to be given a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than the oldest. The findings raise questions about how we regard those wiggly children who just can’t seem to sit still -- and who also happen to be the youngest in their class.
I'm really interested in the subject because we had to move my son to a different school to get him out from under attempts by the feminazi principal to put him on Ritalin.

#4  I am a psych RN. I have worked with all sorts of kids in my career. And now my grandson has been unofficially diagnosed with ADHD. He is 6 yo. When I play with him, his brain won't stop when I say enough. There is not enough room on this post to say what I feel. Kids with ADHD need to have special diets and a daily routine. I do admit there does seem to be more kids with dx of ADHD than when I was growing up. I don't think it's anti-boy bigotry, "No mo", just boys tend to have ADHD more often than girls.

#6  My wife is a teacher and she believes that it's more these kids are not getting enough sleep. Their parents allow them to remain up to midnight or worse, then they send them off all wired to school and expect the teachers to deal with it. Kids really do need 8+ hours of sleep, not 6. I suspect if parents start giving their kids actual schedules and let them sleep enough, you'll reduce the dx down to the ones that truly have it. I know our little 1 yr old acts like a speed freak if he gets less sleep than he should. His behavior is much different when his routine is kept too, resulting in a solid 11+ hours sleep and he gets his naps. Then he's a relatively calm kid that likes to play and have fun without appearing to be amped on speed.

#9  Telling little boys to act like little girls does not make them sit down and shut up. ADHD is a cudgel in public schools, not a diagnosis of illness. Being a rambunctious little boy is not a disease. They need time to learn how to properly handle their natural aggression and higher physical activity levels. Not drugs. They need to be able to rough house with each other in the dirt on a playground and have punishment when they go too far so they learn where the limits are. Drugging them does not let them learn.

#11  My youngest was diagnosed with ADHD in the 3rd grade. She's very smart and I always thought she was just bored. She always made straight A's and finished her work at school quickly and was left with nothing to do but fidget. The school she was going to at the time didn't have any advanced programs as these programs "made the slower students feel bad". The dumbing-down of students was well established. I fought the "diagnosis" tooth and nail and was finally able to get her into a better school. She is now finishing her degree in organic chemistry.

Iraq
US Used Intel Frm Captured ISIS To Strike Two Chem Weapons Facilities
[Daily Caller] The Islamic State’s captured chemical weapons chief provided intelligence to U.S. military officials that allowed Operation Inherent Resolve forces to conduct air strikes against two ISIS chemical weapons factories, the Pentagon revealed in a press conference Friday.

Sleiman Daoud al-Afari, the head of the ISIS chemical weapons program, was captured by U.S. special operators near the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar in February and held for two weeks before he was turned over to the Iraqi government. Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren confirmed during a press briefing that two strikes on ISIS chemical weapons factories near the Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday and Tuesday were due to information obtained from al-Afari.

ISIS chemical weapons capability in Mosul has been of some concern due to the fact that Mosul University is known to have chemistry equipment that could be utilized to produce chemical weapons.

Another Iranian commander killed in Syria
[Rudaw] Another commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) paramilitary was killed in Syria according to the Iranian press.

General Hassan Ali Shamsabadi was reportedly killed late on Wednesday while, according to an Iranian press report quoted by NOW Leb, undertaking an "advisory mission" in the war-torn country. A mere day after he had officially retired.

The report claimed he was defending Shiite shrines in Syria when killed. However the Syrian opposition say he was killed in fighting near Aleppo. An area where most of the 180+ Iranians to have died in Syria have been killed to date.

His death comes one monther after another IRGC commander, Brigadier General Mohsen Qaryajan, was killed in a similar mission in Syria.

Tehran has long insisted that it only sends its paramilitary soldiers to Syria in an advisory role. Not as combat troops.

Iran, along with its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah, have fully supported the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
in the Syrian conflict since it began. Hezbollah has lost as many as 1,300 of its members since it intervened in mid-2013 to assist that regime against its various armed enemies.

PYD can never be reliable anti-Daesh partner: Turkish FM
[AA.TR] The Syria-based terrorist organization PYD should never be considered as a reliable partner for defeating Daesh [Islamic State], Turkish foreign minister said at the fifth meeting of the "Turkish-British Tatlidil Forum" in London Saturday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu differed from the views of his British counterpart, Philip Hammond, at the forum, who said the PYD needed to be part of the political process in Syria.

"A terrorist organization should never be a reliable partner to defeat another terrorist organization," Cavusoglu said, adding: "In this case, my opinion is a little bit different than Philips regarding the PYD. For us, the PYD and the PKK are the same, there is no difference. When you look at the structures of the PYD, you see the PKK terrorist elements".

The Turkish minister also highlighted links of the PYD with the Bashir al-Assad regime and Russia.

"PYD is not only an ally of the regime, but also the ally of Russia. Therefore, a terrorist organization should not be a reliable partner to defeat another terrorist organization," he said.

"A terrorist organization, which is not radical Islamist should not be [considered] a better one than Daesh [Islamic State] or Al-Nusra. From time to time, Al-Nusra is also fighting Daesh [Islamic State] for their interest; therefore, we cannot legitimize any other terrorist organization just because they are fighting others on the ground. Therefore, the PYD should never be a reliable partner to defeat Daesh [Islamic State]," he said.

Cavusoglu said the international coalition forces were enough to defeat terrorist organizations.

The N2.2 billion paid to the holy mans is different from the $2.1billion arms fund for which former National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd.), is currently standing trial.

According to The Nation, the monies for the prayer was disbursed through the Office of the NSA as proposed by Baba-Kusa.

These revelations were contained in a statement of witness/caution by Baba-Kusa himself and filed in the high court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Baba-Kusa, Dasuki and three others (Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited (owned by Baba-Kusa) and a former director of finance in ONSA, Shuaibu Salisu, are standing trial before the FCT High Court.

The NNPC director confessed that the money was spent on prayers to hasten the defeat of the krazed killers, and that it was released in two tranches of N1,450,000,000 and N750,000,000, adding that the proposal was verbal.

"I approached the former NSA and discussed Boko Haram problems and I suggested there is need for prayers and he considered and accepted in 2013 when he first came to office.

"I personally sponsored many people locally and some few to Saudi Arabia. Some monies were later paid into our companies, which we paid to some of the mallams.

"I then arranged to recover my personal expense which I put into our own businesses.

Iraq
Iraq: Injury toll in Daesh toxic gas attack rises to 670
[AA.TR] The injury toll in a Daesh [Islamic State] suspected toxic attack south of Kirkuk has risen to 670, Iraqi Turkmen Front said in a statement Saturday.

A child also died in the incident, while out of the 670 people injured, seven are said to be at death's door, who were transferred to medical facilities in Baghdad, the statement added.

"This heinous action is a clear proof that this organization is targeting the presence of Turkmen in Iraqi territories," it said.

The front urged the central government and the international coalition forces to intervene "immediately and rapidly to liberate the Turkmen village of al-Bashir to avoid the risk of targeting the people in Taza Khurmatu, Turkmen area".

It also demanded from the "Iraqi Environment Directorate to act urgently and immediately in order to address the environmental pollution as a result of these chemical attacks".

Abdul Hadi Mohan, member of a health and environment committee at the Iraqi parliament, said Friday: "The first death [took place] as a result of the attack of Daesh [Islamic State] last Tuesday evening in the area of Taza Khurmatu, to the south of Kirkuk province, by missiles carrying toxic gases; it also maimed more than 400 people".

Torhan al-Mufti, higher coordination committee secretary in the Iraqi Council of Ministers, said Saturday that a delegation of Taza Khurmatu met Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and discussed the security situation of the area in the aftermath of the toxic gas attack.

Trump is lying to you, just like Obama and the GOPe do.

If Cruz gets the nomination, I am in his corner.

Trump has a Bronx school yard approach to the wise guys. A protester was sucker punched in the face by a Trump supporter. Trump has offered to pay the legal fees of the supporter who punched the protester. A Breitbart woman reporter was grabbed and almost knocked to the floor by Trumps campaign manager who filed assault charges on the campaign manager.

Cruz is stepping in and telling Trump to chill on the physical stuff.

#9  One thing to be clear about - criticism of Trump incitinv violent behavior, which is well deserved, does not excuse Bernie on the socialists side. The difference is that Trump egging on violence in his followers only seems to bring a small percentage of them to foaming at the mouth stupidity. They tarnish the entire group and Trump has no moarl qualms about using Hitlerian style threats of violence to power his rise. But in the end, it is still only a small percentage of his followers are stupid and violent enough to respond.

Call them useful fools.

Now on the other side, look at BLM, Bernie, Ayers, Obama etc. The SJWs and progressives people seem to be primed for violence. And they have no qualms at all about silencing opposition via intimidation and threats. These people are True Believers, every bit as nasty and dangerous as the Klan or Stormfront. But they get soft treatment from the press instead of exposure.

So if there is such a thing as "wrong and more wrong", this is it. Trump is wrong, but Bernie/BLM/Obama are "more wrong".

#10  The problem with the riots and the confrontations is the leftist brownshirts.
It's the left that keeps insisting "get in their faces and punch back twice as hard" and "we need some muscle over here." OWS may have failed but the left has finally assembled a force of brownshirts out of the BLM movement. (wait, is that racist?)

THAT is the face of the enemy. And I do not require perfection from Trump or any other candidate that put themselves in harms way by answering their provocations.

Hamas says delegation to meet Egyptian officials in Cairo
[AlAhram] A senior Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, official says a delegation from the Islamic holy warrior group is heading to Cairo to discuss the group's strained relationship with the Egyptian government.
Given the new, 3 km long super-tunnels Hamas has been digging for trade with their ISIS in the Sinai buddies, that conversation should be interesting.
The official spoke anonymously as he is not authorized to brief the media on this issue.

Relations between Hamas and Egypt have soured since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013; Hamas and Morsi's Moslem Brüderbund were close allies.

Egyptian officials have more than once linked Hamas to terror acts in Egypt, which spiked following the toppling of Morsi.

Last week, Cairo accused Hamas of playing a major role in the 2015 liquidation of Egypt's chief prosecutor.
The Times of Israel adds:
Group says delegation will meet with intelligence officials, discuss accusations it played role in 2015 murder of top Egyptian prosecutor

The source did not identify any particular threat leading up to the bombardment or say what targets were hit.

Two rockets fired from Syria landed close to an army barracks, police headquarters and court house in Kilis Saturday. A third rocket landed in a farm land in the province, security source added. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Authorities in the area took measures to tighten security. Bomb-dismantling experts also started a large scale search operation in the area.

On Tuesday, a woman and child were killed when rockets fired from Syria landed in Kilis.

Under the circumstances, Britain may come to regret this...
British Airways plans to resume its scheduled flights to Iran in July. The carrier halted flights to Tehran in 2012 amid rifts between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Iran Air, however, continued its three weekly flights to London.

Last December, Air La Belle France also said it would resume flights to Tehran for the first time in more than seven years, starting in April.

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea' 'free' medical service in deplorable state
Here's something about North Korea I'll bet you didn't know and would have never guessed...
SEOUL -- North Korea's "free" medical service has degenerated into a deplorable state with patients compelled to pay for treatment and to even procure drugs on their own, sources familiar with the isolationist country claimed Sunday.

According to multiple sources that maintain clandestine ties with ordinary North Koreans, the North medical service sector has been hit hard by poor economic conditions and shortages of medicine.

"It is an open secret that people wanting treatment must pay hospitals and clinics and that on occasion procure their own drugs," an insider, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

He claimed that people who just could not pay had to give up getting medical treatment altogether and rely on unproven home remedies.

Others said that weak medical infrastructure and unsanitary living conditions are causing outbreaks of malaria, tuberculosis and hand-foot-and-mouth disease which are usually easy to treat and contain.

Reflecting this, the United Nations World Health Organization said the number of tuberculosis cases per 100,000 person in the North has been rising steadily over the year.

In 2010, there were some 395 patients per 100,000, but this rose to 442 in 2014.

In addition, there have been reports from aid groups that the North suffers from shortages of basic drugs and medical equipment like penicillin, anesthetics and even syringes.

"There have been cases where patients have undergone surgery without anesthetics," a aid worker said. He said such shortages have caused people to buy such items themselves to give to doctors.

He then said that there have been reports of medical personnel selling off drugs for profit as well as a circulation of fake drugs, like pain killers and injection drugs.

UNSMIL calls for Benghazi ceasefire as fresh fighting flares in south of the city
There has been heavy clashes today between the Libyan army and militants in the Tika area, at the southern approach to Benghazi. The fighting started early this morning, drawing in units from the 204 Tank brigade as well as brigades 302, 304 and 308. Heavy clashes continued throughout the morning which one LNA soldier killed and eight wounded. The army, however, are claiming three militants killed, one of them an Egyptian.

Tika, near Garyounis and Gwarsha, is reported this evening to be still dominated by militant forces.

Meanwhile the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for a temporary ceasefire in the city to enable local humanitarian organisations provide for desperately-needed supplies of food and medical supplies to be delivered to the few remaining residents in Ganfouda and Gwarsha, the last remaining militant strongholds. It also wants to be able to organise the exit of civilian families who it believes are still in the two areas.

The source reported for IraqiNews.com, “Today, violent clashes erupted between Arab clans and the ISIS elements in the vicinity of al-Riyad in the district of Hawija (45 km southwest of Kirkuk), resulting in the death of 14 [ISIS] elements and wounding 7 others.”

The source attributed the outbreak of clashes to “the state of hatred, anger and resentment by the people of the southern and western regions of Kirkuk because of the injustice of ISIS as well as the state of hunger and oppression in which they live.”

Peshmerga shoot dead six ISIS suicide bombers west of Kirkuk

[Rudaw] A major suicide attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants on Peshmerga defense lines south of Kirkuk was foiled Saturday morning, said the frontline commander.

“The militants were gunned down before they could detonate themselves,” commander Kamal Kirkuki told Rudaw.

Six ISIS suicide bombers attacked the Peshmerga base at around 3:30 am, whose bodies still lie there in the open field, said Kirkuki.

“The bodies of the suicide bombers were blown to pieces after they were shot,” he added. “If the Peshmerga had not killed the militants the attack would have caused serious casualties."

The frontline south and west of Kirkuk has experienced major confrontations between ISIS and Kurdish forces in the last two years. But the Peshmerga are well-prepared for such surprise attacks, said Kirkuki. He claimed that at least 6,000 ISIS militants have been killed on this front alone.

IS forces at Mizdah surrounded, claims LNA amid continued fighting
Fighting between gunmen from the so-called Islamic State (IS) and units of the Libyan National Army south of Mizdah, on the Tripoli-Sebha road, has continued today for the fourth day. According to a source within the LNA, it now has the IS force of some 150 men surrounded.

The fighting started on Thursday when IS set up a roadblock some 60 kilometres south of Mizdah (itself 170 kilometres south of Tripoli). It then arrested around ten people travelling along the road. All were released apart from a traffic police official named as Major Amr Bakoush. He has not been heard of since. A colleague with him managed to escape, however.

The IS forces were then attacked by units from the LNA, mainly Zintanis and Wirshefana.

In the subsequent fighting some five LNA soldiers are reported to have been killed, two of them yesterday, both said to be Zintanis.

The LNA source reports that the army has helicopter support from Wattiya airbase. It is being used to provide details of IS positions and movement, but there have been no air strikes.

The checkpoint set up by IS is some 40 kilometres south of the junction with the road leading to Nisma and Bani Walid. IS units are said to have been active along it and in the surrounding area for the past few weeks.

On Wednesday, reports of the Mizdah incident became confused with a IS operation at another checkpoint, in this case near Abugrein, 140 kilometres south of Misrata. The area is the frontline between the Misratans and IS. The village of Abugrein is reported in IS hands but the checkpoint, some ten kilometres to the west, is controlled by the Misratans.

Following a largely ineffective airstrike from Misrata on Sirte, IS forces launched a revenge attack on the checkpoint, killing three guards. A fourth, who as seriously injured, subsequently succumbed to his wounds.

Gulf to be first foreign fuel seller in Mexico
[AA.TR] U.S.-based Gulf is will make history later this year when it becomes the first foreign oil company to sell gas in Mexico, the company said Friday.

The move will break a more than 75-year-old state monopoly in the sector in February, the government announced it would bring implement energy reform by permitting foreign oil companies to sell fuel under other banners than Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), the national oil company that has been the only service station operator allowed in Mexico.

"We’re proud to be the first to begin operations with a new brand in the recently opened Mexican market," said Gulf Mexico director Sergio de la Vega.

He said the company will open four gas stations in June and July, adding that two will be located in Mexico City and Monterrey.

He also added that the company, which is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, expects to operate at least 100 service stations at the end of 2016 and 2,000 stations during the next three years.

32 ISIS troops die in attacks on Kobane
ARA News

KOBANE – Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) reported Saturday death of dozens of militants from the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group in the countryside of Kobane in northern Syria.

The YPG’s Media Center said in a statement that the Kurdish fighters have deterred several car bomb attacks near the Tishreen Dam south of Kobane.

“ISIS terrorists launched an excessive assault from the western side of the Euphrates River on headquarters of the YPG in the area between Jarablus and the Tishreen dam.”

The statement added that the YPG forces were able to destroy more than five ISIS vehicles before reaching their targets.

YPG spokesman Sarhad Abbas told ARA News: “Subsequent to the attacks, clashes broke out between our forces and ISIS terrorists in the vicinity of Tishreen Dam.”

The clashes, which continued until Saturday midnight, resulted in the death of 32 ISIS militants, according to the Kurdish official.

Abbas added that four YPG fighters were killed and seven others were wounded, before the Kurdish units were able to drive ISIS from the area.

Somali refugees have ruined Kenya and must leave
Northeastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said Kenya has accommodated the more than 350,000 mostly Somali refugees in camps in Daadab for 25 years.
Interesting how the Somalis have become the Palestinians of east Africa...
“As a country we are fatigued by the refugees who have not only caused havoc to the environment but have been fueling insecurity in the country,” he said.

Saleh told a high powered delegation from the African Union security council and the UNHCR that the refugees are taking Kenyan hospitality for granted.

“The refugee camps have become a breeding ground for al Shabaab terrorists cells, money laundering, drug and human trafficking,” he added.

Saleh said the Westgate and the Garissa University College terror attacks were planned and executed from Daadab.

“Over 80 per cent of Somalia territory is safe and we don’t see any reason why these camps cannot be moved to such areas,” he said.

The head of the UNHCR delegation, Ahmed Baba, said the intergration of refugees into the community inside Somalia was being hampered by lack of basic infrastructure among them water, schools health and security.

He said 99 per cent of the refugees are still vulnerable and “they cannot just be taken back and left alone”.

“The repatriation should be carried out in a dignified manner. Voluntarily repatriation remains the best option,” Baba said.

Snowmobile 'driven into dog-sleds' in Alaska Iditarod race
[BBC] A dog has been killed and several others injured after a snowmobile was deliberately driven into two dog-sled teams competing in a race, officials have said.

The incident happened during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska.

Race marshals said a man on a snowmobile first attacked one sled and later hit the sled that was following behind.

The motive is not clear but police said a suspect had been identified.

Race officials said veteran competitor Aliy Zirkle first reported being attacked near the village of Nulato on the Yukon River during a leg of the 1,000-mile (1,609km) race to Nome.

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters told AP news agency that the snowmobile had hit the side of Ms Zirkle's sled and the driver threatened her several more times before driving off.

One of her dogs was injured. She reported the incident after arriving in Nulato in the early hours of Saturday.

Some time later, competitor Jeff King, who had been following Ms Zirkle, reported being hit by the snowmobile in the same area. One of his dogs was killed and at least three others were maimed.

A statement by the Iditarod Trail Committee said a suspect had been identified by the village police officer in Nulato and authorities were conducting an investigation.

"Regrettably, this incident very much alters the race of the two mushers competing for a win. However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
both are going to continue on their way toward Nome," it added.

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual event that takes place through some of Alaska's most remote areas between Anchorage and Nome. Competitors and their teams often encounter blizzards, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures.

Afghan army kill 41 militants after deadly Taliban infighting in Herat
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least 41 Taliban murderous Moslems were killed during an operation by the Afghan national security forces in western Herat

#7  This thin skinned narcissist son of a bitch started the whole thing. Disrespect, belittling people, treating political opponents like mortal enemies. And the GOPe sat there instead of fighting back. And he (and by association, McConnell Rove and others) now has the nerve to lecture Trump people for doing what he has been doing for 8 years in one form or another? What about the Red Flag socialist from Bernie and BLM who just instituted a heckler's veto on a Trump campaign event? Where is the criticism of that?

You do that kind of thing long enough, you are going to get a reaction. And that's how the Brown Shirts came to power in the 20's and 30's - doing nationalistic demagoguery and inciting violence against the already violent Red brigades. Trump is using that time-proven formula to rise to power. Obama may get more time in office if he declares a national emergency in response. If that happens, its all over, been nice knowing you USA.

#8  There is plenty of blame to go around, and Obama, Shillary, and Bernie have just as large or larger a portion of it as do Trump's coddling of KKK, Storm Front and physically abusive people like his campaign manager. The press biased coverage has covered for the left doing the same thing for Sander's and BLM's Communists. Its like the SA and the KPD are reappearing form the early 1930's to repeat the mistakes of history all over again.

They all suck. Eventually someone will go too far, and we will either have a massive crackdown for "safety" where one side or the other loses freedom of assemble and speech, in which case all of us eventually lose it. And the rebellion starts in earnest.

And that is a civil war waiting to happen. Not N vs S, but communities against themselves. These stupid activists will get a very harsh dose of reality if it comes to that. And if they are the ones seen as most at fault, they will decorate lamp posts. Look to the fate of Mussolini, or Ceaușescu.

Is this truly what you people on both sides want? Its what you will get if things push to the breaking point.

Iraq
Al-Sadr calls for sit-in outside Baghdad’s Green Zone
[AA.TR] Prominent Shia holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
on Saturday called on supporters to stage a sit-in outside Baghdad’s Green Zone -- an apparent reversal of earlier pledges to keep his followers away from the international zone.

"Every Iraqi who is loyal to the country must rise up and begin a new phase of peaceful protest... by holding a sit-in in front of the gates of the Green Zone until the end of the prescribed period, by which I mean the 45 days," al-Sadr declared in a statement.

On Feb. 12, al-Sadr gave the government of Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi 45 days to draw up a non-sectarian-based government of technocrats mandated with uprooting official corruption and streamlining state bureaucracy.

Last week, he warned that his followers would storm Baghdad’s Green Zone -- which houses government institutions and foreign embassies -- if the deadline passed without the demands being met.

On Friday, tens of thousands of al-Sadr's followers demonstrated in Baghdad and Iraq’s southern provinces -- for the third week in a row -- to reiterate their demands.

Abdul Aziz al-Zalmi, a member of Iraq’s Al-Ahrar bloc, a Sadrist Shia political coalition, attributed al-Sadr's calls for a sit-in outside the Green Zone to "the lack of seriousness on the part of the government in carrying out the promised reforms".

"Now," al-Zalmi told Anadolu Agency, "the government must confront the street, which demands a new government of non-partisan technocrats."

Last summer, Iraq’s parliament approved a comprehensive raft of reforms proposed by al-Abadi. The reforms are intended to meet longstanding popular demands to eliminate government corruption and streamline state bureaucracy.

Al-Sadr's bloc in parliament holds 34 seats in the 328-seat assembly and three ministerial portfolios in Iraq’s current government.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lavrov Urges UN Envoy to Include Kurds in Syria Talks
[ALMANAR.LB] Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday urged the UN's special envoy on Syria to include Kurds in upcoming talks that aim to resolve the five-year Syrian civil war.

"I am convinced that Staffan de Mistura should take such a decision," Lavrov told news hounds at a joint news conference with his Chinese counterpart.

"Launching negotiations without the participation of this group would be a sign of weakness from the international community," Lavrov said.

Russia's top diplomat argued that holding talks on forming a new ruling structure in Syria to prepare constitutional reform and elections without Kurds would be "a most serious infringement of the rights of a large and significant group living in Syria."

Kurds are "allies both of the US coalition and Russia" and control at least 15 percent of Syrian territory," Lavrov added.

Lavrov hit out at The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, saying that "only Turks are blocking the invitation of Kurds from the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD)," criticizing this as "an ultimatum."

Turkey accuses the PYD of being the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The issue of the Syrian Kurds has caused a rare rift between Ankara and Washington.

De Mistura told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti Friday that "we are not sending out new invitations" to the upcoming talks, in response to a question on broadening opposition participation.

At the same time, in comments translated into Russian, he stressed the importance of "ensuring as far as possible inclusiveness and participation of all Syrians who can make a contribution to Syria's future."

The UN is hoping to restart peace talks that collapsed last month, building on a ceasefire that has led to the first significant decline in violence in Syria's nearly five-year civil war.

A new round of talks aimed at ending the war in Syria will begin in Geneva on March 14 and will last no longer than 10 days, the UN mediator has said.

Canadian Charged with Trying to Join Terror Group
Another rube self-identifies. Was his name among the 22,000 recently reported?.
[AnNahar] Canadian authorities have charged a Quebec man for attempting to leave the country to take part in a terrorist group, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Friday.

Ismail Habib, 28, was also charged with making a false statement to obtain a passport, the RCMP added.

He faces 10 years in prison.

"This case clearly demonstrates that the RCMP and its partners are committed to investigating and prosecuting those who threaten Canada's national security," police Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said.

Habib, who has an Afghan father and a Canadian mother, was trying to reach Syria, where his wife and 5-year-old daughter have been living for a year, local media reported.

Habib was charged under Canada's terrorism act, which enables the authorities to bring charges against anyone suspected of participating in the activity of a terrorist group.

It also applies to cases in which a person "leaves or attempts to leave Canada."

In March last year, a 17-year-old was detained in the western province of Alberta. A month later, a girl and her companion, both 18, were indicted for attempting to leave the country to commit a terrorist act abroad, the RCMP said.

The two were enrolled in the same Montreal high school attended by five students from a group of seven second-generation immigrants colonists who boarded a flight bound for Istanbul and eventually Syria to join IS fighters, according to the authorities.

Pro-Hadi forces break Houthi ‘siege’ on Yemen’s Taiz
[AA.TR] Forces loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi say they have partially broken a months-long ‘siege’ by the Shia Houthi murderous Moslem group on the southwestern city of Taiz.

"The siege of Taiz has been broken from the city’s southwest by the national army... along with popular resistance forces," the city’s pro-Hadi military council tweeted late Friday.

Taiz’s strategically important southwestern entrance -- which links it to the southern Lahij and Aden provinces -- had been one of three main city entrances held by the Houthis and allied forces loyal to former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
The southwestern entrance was reportedly secured Friday by pro-Hadi forces following three days of fierce fighting with the Houthis and their allies.

Earlier Friday, pro-Hadi forces claimed to have scored other victories west of Taiz, where they said they had retaken several Houthi-held positions.

On Friday evening, Houthi

The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
murderous Moslems reportedly staged several attacks on the eastern side of Taiz -- where local witnesses reported hearing violent kabooms -- in hopes of offsetting losses sustained to the west of the city.

Al Arabiya sez 50 dead in Taiz battles so far

[AlArabiy] Clashes intensified on Friday between Shiite rebels and local fighters in the besieged city of Taiz, killing at least 45 fighters on both sides and six civilians over the past 24 hours.

The city has seen heavy fighting between rebels known as Houthis and local resistance units financed and armed by the Saudi-led coalition that is backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

The local fighters have been advancing and have taken control of Taiz’s western outskirts.

The medical officials said Friday that most of the 45 killed over the past 24 hours died in airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition. They also said that six civilians were killed in random shelling of residential areas. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

According to witnesses, Islamic militants who are fighting next to the local resistance have kidnapped a number of Houthi supporters and members of the ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party in the city of Taiz after storming their houses and shops.

Al-Qaeda in Yemen has posted videos before for its operations in Taiz. The group, along with Salafis, has been fighting side-by-side with the local resistance fighters.

The Houthis have besieged Taiz, widely known as Yemen’s cultural center, for over a year now. Saudi-led coalition launched an extensive air campaign and send ground troops to roll back Houthis.

This Biannual in Emergency Preparedness - Spring Forward
by swksvolFF

Greetings.
Here at chez Kansas, we take a moment each time change to perform a safety review. It is an opportune time, as it is not only a marked day to remember, it is also a seasonal shift to review safety and emergency devices.

First, to judge my advice I must share myself at a certain level. I am a family man, and live in a house in southwest Kansas. I am not Johnny Rescue, though I have experienced at some level all aspects of such, nor am I Burt Gunner, which my other limited experience goes to badanov's This Week in Guns. I am just a guy with a family whose household responsibilities include safety and preparedness.

So by all means, this is a discussion, and all suggestions will be considered. It is important for you to take into consideration who you are and are not, where you live, and what level of preparedness you feel comfortable attaining. I am of the school better to have it and not need it, but there is also the consideration of overpacking, especially with a boogie bag or car kit.

This first posting is really an overview of the basic safety and awareness check I perform biannually. Later posts, as discussion permits, will get into particulars such as a good boogie bag

So forgive me for donning my nanny chapeau for the basics, then we will consider dynamic emergency preparedness supplies.

Around the Home
First off: smoke detectors. If the last time you checked your smoke detector batteries was cooking fajitas, it is time to check them again. And like a tetanus shot, if you cannot remember the last time you changed your batteries, it is time.

Same for carbon monoxide detectors and any other disposable battery operated detectors you may have.

Along the same lines, if you have a biometric vault, just go ahead and change the batteries; chances are you have a remote control or something else which can use the rest of the replaced battery's charge. Locate visually any back-up keys. Someone I, ahem, know had a battery go out and the key was missing - the only thing good about it was I, errr, that person was able to test the durability of the safe.

Firearms in the house? It is a good time to check all safety locks for effectiveness. Time to review with the kids that guns are not toys, and if you see one laying out do not touch and go tell an adult.

Review your fire escape plan. As we all age, abilities and responsibilities change, especially as children grow up or we get sick or injured. Can a person escape through a window on their own ability and initiative? Can or should a person be responsible for operating a fire extinguisher? Where is your rally point? Everyone know not to go back in no matter what?

And that is a tough question with a simple answer. If the structure is still survivable, information such as how many, where, and how to get there will greatly assist fire fighters who have the right equipment and training to enter an involved structure - remember, it is the smoke which is most dangerous, especially with all the plastics and specialized batteries in the modern house. If the structure is not survivable, then a person re-entering the structure just made a bad situation worse.

Pretty straightforward, right? In the spirit of Spring Training, here is a curveball: attic insulation. Many insulations lose their fire rating over time, especially the paper-based stuff. I know, it is expensive and inconvenient to replace, but a number of calls I have been on were made or broke on account of the effectiveness of the attic insulation's fire retardant. Hey, at least you will have better climate control.

How about a slider: when was the last time you checked your water heater? No, not cussing at it because you stubbed your toe, but checking connections and the bottom for corrosion. If you have an electric heater and it goes out, it is a bad day. If you have a gas heater and it goes out... you have a problem like when we returned from a trip and our heater failed just enough to put out the pilot light, but not make much of a mess. It must have just happened because there was only a whiff of gas. Still, everyone went to fire rally point while I shut off the line and circulated/dispersed the air.

Check your gas stove too.

Also, check your main water lines for corrosion/failure. If a pipe breaks, being able to shut off the main and/or branches can be the difference between a jolly mess and serious structural and wallet damage. Usually it is the toilet, especially when someone is just learning about toilet paper. Even children can operate that valve, but check to see if it still functions.

At this point you are probably lsaying, gosh golly Auntie K, anything else? Perhaps my sock folding is inappropriate?

Well, yes, but above are the basics of nearly every living space. Starting to get a bit more specific: check the foundation for cracks, check the chimney for obstructions, the porch, etc for overwinter damage, make sure skunks cannot get under the porch, make sure coyotes can't get through the fence - but that is your job to problem-solve your place. Take a look around. It is only twice a year, and can be done during game timeouts.

If you have a car kit, check your perishables - food and water - for quality. Rotate batteries. Replenish paper towels - not the ones in the cab, the ones in the trunk which were grabbed when the kids used up the roll in the cab.

Emergency Preparedness
I want to talk about the famous Kansas weather phenomenon I have at the top of my list for natural disaster preparedness.

No, not tornadoes: prairie fire. That involves my boogie bag, but I'll hold that bag of beans for the next post because you will be like, "You have a tomahawk? Really?" I will say yes, and it came handy.

Instead, in honor of tornado season, I will hit on storm sheltering. Hat tip to Mullah Richard for our discussion on storm spotting and emergency equipment and supplies. Y'all can get detailed in the comments, I may refine my suggestions as well or even follow up with a later post.

A wind event, including tornadoes, hurricanes, microbursts, and political rallies are the most likely, widespread storm emergency for nearly everyone living in the US. Everyone else, sorry, you know your weather; I don't.

First off: locate your storm shelter. The most likely problem will be stuff going through your windows, so consider flying glass. The most popular suggestion is lowest floor, at the center. That does not work for me, as right above me is a five ton olde school bath tub I am not interested in wearing as a hat.

A lot of people do not have basements. I would suggest a windowless interior room, if possible. Rule of thumb: if you can see a window, something can come through and hit you. Do random objects get blown fast enough to stick in things? Yes. Yes they do. I cannot tell you with any authority whether sheltering in a bath tub is effective or a wive's tale, only that it is better than standing in the doorway taking selfies.

Space is a consideration as well. It must be large enough for everyone to fit. Also, any cache is going to take space and if it is a permanent cache that is space which cannot be used for other things. I prefer a permanent cache because out here, even with all of our advanced communications and weather radar, storms often come through in less than an hour, and if that is nap time, well, Surprise! Second, I don't have to pack/unpack/did I repack? all the time. Third, and most important, there are other things to think about when shepherding the family into position.

Now we have established your storm shelter, time to add some basics. To do that, we have to have some considerations. First, the power is out, and will not be back on for quite a while. Second, your windows are busted in - notice in. Third, everyone needs help, so help is not arriving anytime soon.

I'm going to put out a basic list, and this is where everyone can play along.

Heavy Blanket
Nice to wrap everyone in to protect from debris lacerations and eye damage, as well as hearing protection. Blinders for the kids are nice I hear. If you have structural damage, this is some extra protection from the elements.

Food & Water
If Pecos Bill just stopped by, nothing is going to be where you left it, and may not be usable if you find it. You have no idea when or where chow will be available. I have 24 hours worth of stuff, really just easy snacks and bottled water. Besides, wouldn't it be better to be munching on a granola bar while taking in the damage?

Weather Radio
There are a ton of these. Sometimes storms split or piggyback, so it is nice to know that before going outside to find your car. Also, emergency instructions should be broadcast, such as triage centers and chow halls.

Whistle
If you are trapped or need assistance, nothing says "Over here!" like blowing a whistle.

Extra Shoes
Windows are blown in, glass is everywhere. Storm isn't going to wait on you to chase the rabbit around the tree and through the hole. If you want to be fancy, or as I call it, practical, have a pair of shoes with built-in protection from nails such as construction boots. Nothing will ruin your I Survived! story like stepping on a nail.

Work Gloves
Again, this is to protect yourself while extricating a damaged structure.

Flashlight
Power is out. Nighttime is dark. Also good for signaling and for morale. Do not forget extra batteries.

Bandages
There is a large selection of bandages. I suggest those with the clotting agents. Getting around with blood in your eyes is tough, etc. and it is good for morale.

Backpack
Put all the stuff into a comfortable backpack. You may need to go somewhere and having all this stuff portable will be handy. Also, it keeps the items from walking off; especially the flashlight.

Basic stuff. I have a closet in a spare bedroom to play with, so over the years I have packratted items such as safety helmets, safety vests, knee protection, extra food, water, bandages, a larger pack, a framing hammer, deck of cards, waterproof matches, MREs, heating packages, water purification systems, eye protection, extra blankets.

Again, this is just a guideline and conversation starter. Thank you.

#1  Another thing to not forget is a fire ladder for any bedroom upstairs. We also plan on having a fire extinguisher for each bedroom upstairs as well but that comes as money trickles in.

But it's hard to stress enough the importance of talking through these things with your family. Everyone has to be familiar with the plan and most especially their part in it.

#2  Stuff a day or two of any vital med into the socks you put in those back up shoes/boots. Might be a few days before you can get your hands on refills while things sort out.

#3  $200 cash, a change of clothes and pajamas for each child (I put last season's soccer uniforms, which had the trailing daughters' names on the back), and colouring books and crayons went into the bug out backpack when the children reached that age. And yes, several of each person's prescription meds in the original, labelled bottles. Most prescription meds have a three year expiration date -- double check with your pharmacist for yours.

#4  "Another thing to not forget is a fire ladder for any bedroom upstairs."

Agreed, #1 SB. During the timer I was a firefighter in our small county, I know of at least one life saved because she had such a ladder. She couldn't have gotten out otherwise, and we couldn't have gotten there in time to get her out.

I don't know what they cost today, but they're worth every penny if you have bedrooms on the second floor.

#5  Very nice, swksvolFF. Very thorough.

I might add that at least one Weather Radio you have should be battery operated. The plug-in-only kinds don't work well if power is down. I like the Midland WR120 for an inexpensive ($25 at Sprawl-Mart) AC/Battery model or their EH55VP rechargeable portable ~$50.

I'm sharing this thread with a few other folks and you might see a weird nic or two in the comments.

Again great job.

#6  Oh, I missed the medicines. (wife gives me a dirty look as meds are part of her education)

My boogie bag has pain relievers and anti-histamines (bees/wasps/etc) and keep it in my storm shelter. Wife confirms to leave meds in their original container, very important.

Add to the check list - open windows to be used in an emergency to make sure they can open. Something we teach at the safety day is to take out a dresser drawer and using it as a battering ram if the window does not open, knock out all the glass, and use the heaviest blanket available to lay over the bottom of the sill.

I have also seen emergency hoods with a breath-through-mouth air filter, and cartridge masks with dedicated fire/smoke filters.

I have an emergency radio with runs on batteries, and also has a hand crank which will charge a built-in battery.

There is a lot of emergency supplies out there now, even more so than when I first started building. I have marine (boating) emergency food and water, basically highly concentrated granola bars and water in high-strength pouches; look like capri sun pouches but durable.

#8  Just thought of something. Have a drinker and/or tobacco user, might want some of that nicotine gum and a pint....under somebody else's stewardship. Cold turkey can be ugly and that may not be the time for it.

For our rural readers, Greensburg KS is a good study. For our more urban, Joplin MO.

Two ways out of every bedroom. Ladders for 2+ stories, step stools for basement windows.

Stay low, it is the smoke which will make a person pass out. Check doors with the back of your hand and on the door so you do not fry-stick your hand to the knob.

#9  Thanks, swksvolFF.

This is excellent information, all in one spot.

You helped a lot of people today.

#10  take the batteries OUT of your emergency radio, put them in a ziplock bag, and tape that bag to the radio. Take them out and use them for toys, put new ones in the radio and test it, then put them in the baggie every spring and fall. Prevents corrosion form the occaisional bad battery and ensures the radio works.

Or else get a hand cranked radio if you have the money.

One medicine to pack: Benadryl. Pills. It works great for allergic reactions (have the benadryl cream on hand if you/yours get rashes frequently), and can be used as a make-shift sedative to help a person sleep in unfamiliar or stressful situations in the aftermath of a disaster.

#12  Everything HG9907 said is right on.

I will say that both my flashlight in my bunker gear and my 'what was that noise' on the bed stand, I keep the batteries in but unscrew the back enough to break the circuit but not let the batteries fall out. So far (couple years now) no corrosion.

Flashlights today: wow. They will knock out a person's night vision for sure - consider if that is a good thing or bad thing.

#13  I have a ladder that would reach the upstairs windows but in an emergency I'm sure I'd have never thought of it. That's a good idea.

#15  There are emergency rope/chain ladders which will fit underneath a bed; hooks over the sill.

#16  Another thing I need to add to my bug out bag is a charged extra battery with appropriate tips for the various cell phones, and make sure there are car chargers in the various cars. I've given this away as a stocking stuffer to the trailing daughters and acquired offspring, so I won't have to worry that their phones will die during an emergency. I carry the next size up for myself, because heaven forbid both the phone and the iPad die at the same time while I am away from electricity -- the thought that I might not be able to reach Rantburg is too horrifying to contemplate. ;-)
Posted by: trailing wife || 03/13/2016 22:30 Comments || Top||

#17  A cigarette lighter inverter, and there are solar chargers with various attachments, as well as solar chargers for traditional sized rechargeable batteries.

I have one which one end goes into a cigarette lighter charger, and the other end is a USB port. There are also various sized battery to battery chargers like TW's link.

There is a battery pack/tire inflator ostensibly for jumping a car/filling tires, but the capacity and sockets allow for recharging items or even running a microwave for x amount of time.

I have an inverter with which I can plug into car's CL charger, run the car, and it could power my fridge and freezer (as gasoline allows).

The Grand Turk
Top court ruling on journalists was against the nation: Erdogan
[Hurriyet Daily News] President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
has heightened the tone of his criticism against the country’s Constitutional Court by saying the top court’s verdict which caused the release of two journalists from prison was "against the nation."

"The Constitutional Court has to be one of the institutions that should be the most sensitive about the interests and rights of the state and the people. But this institution and its president [Zuhtu Arslan] have not hesitated to rule against the country and its people on one of the most concrete examples of a massive attack towards The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in recent times," Erdogan said at a rally in Burdur, a Western town, on March 11.

Two prominent journalists from daily Cumhuriyet, its editor-in-chief, Can Dundar, and Ankara bureau chief, Erdem Gul, were set free after 92 days of imprisonment as a result of a Constitutional Court decision which said their rights had been violated. Dundar and Gul had been locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
by a lower Istanbul court on charges of espionage and terrorism after they reported about claims that Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) was allegedly shipping weapons to rebels in Syria.

Erdogan vowed he would continue to stand against the top court’s verdict in line with his presidential duty to protect the constitution, saying, "I am responsible for monitoring the orderly and harmonious work of state bodies, the implementation of the constitution and representing the unity of the state and the people of the Republic of Turkey. Those who would exceed the boundaries of its authority will have to face me. I will never hesitate to voice my objections in the name of my people if the Constitutional Court opts for such a thing."

"It was himself, Mr. President [Arslan], who had told me, ‘We never issue a ruling before its reasoning is ready.’ But unfortunately, I was so unhappy and resentful after this. Why? Because, his position requires honesty," he said.

‘Lower court had to resist’

The lower court in Istanbul that obeyed the top court’s ruling and released Dundar and Gul has also taken its share of Erdogan’s criticism. "The lower court had to resist the Constitutional Court," Erdogan said, although the top court’s decisions are binding for all judicial institutions. "We would see what the Constitutional Court would do then. If the court insists on its decision, I believe things would develop in a different direction."
Recalling that the lower court arrested the two journalists on charges of espionage, Erdogan reiterated his stance that the case had nothing to do with the freedom of the press.

Alone this issue shows the need for a new constitution that would endorse the presidential system, Erdogan stated, lashing out at oppositional parties for stopping the process.

Hamas TV switches broadcaster as French satellite pulls the plug
[IsraelTimes] After going briefly off air due to Hollande’s intervention, terrorist group finds new transmitter for its Al-Aqsa channel

Paleostinian terror group Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, was forced to find a new broadcaster for its Al-Aqsa TV channel on Friday after French satellite giant Eutelsat halted transmissions. The move came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday called French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
, the Hebrew-language Walla website reported. Netanyahu asked Hollande to intervene to halt the broadcast of Al-Aqsa, and Eutelsat agreed.Netanyahu thanked the president for helping prevent incitement against Israelis and Jews, Walla said.

But the channel was not off air for long, according to the Ynet news website. The terror group on Friday announced it had a new satellite broadcaster, and provided details of the new frequencies.

Still, it was unclear whether Al-Aqsa would have the same audience figures as before, or could even be seen at all in Europe. Eutelsat satellites transmit broadcasts from more than 6,000 channels, covering Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The company reportedly reaches over 270 million homes around the world.

In possible retribution, Hamas on Friday night hacked into private satellite dishes broadcasting Israel’s Channel 2 station, airing a chilling warning that it would never stop attacking Israeli targets.

"Get out of our country," the message said in Hebrew and Arabic, against a backdrop of footage from terror attacks and funerals in Israel, along with cartoons of would-be attackers armed with guns, hatchets and knives. The three-and-a-half minute interruption also included footage of Arab Israeli terrorist Nashat Nilhem, who bumped off three people in a January 1 shooting spree in Tel Aviv.

The hack was followed by a volley of rocket fire from Gazoo, which is ruled by Hamas. All four rockets fell in open areas in southern Israel.

Israel on Thursday night raided a West Bank television station affiliated to Paleostinian terror group Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
, shutting the offices and confiscating equipment, as part of a crackdown on Paleostinian incitement.

Europe's migrants and their colonizing predecessors
Teen Girls Charged in France over 'Concert Hall Attack Plot'

[AnNahar] Two teenage girls have been charged in France with allegedly plotting to assault a Paris concert hall some four months after the nation's deadliest terror attacks, legal sources said Saturday. The girls, 15 and 17 years old, exchanged messages on Facebook in which they claimed they wanted to launch an attack similar to those in November that targeted the Bataclan concert venue as well as bars, restaurants and a football stadium, police said.

The girls were arrested Wednesday and appeared before an anti-terror judge on Friday on charges of criminal conspiracy in connection with a terrorist undertaking. Paris prosecutors said the discussions of the attack were in the preliminary stage and "neither weapons, nor explosive substances have been discovered."

Pressed for papers, Egyptian migrant jumps from German train to death

[AlAhram] An Egyptian teenager, discovered hiding beneath a bench on a German night train, jumped out of a window and died after officials asked to see his papers, German police said on Friday. The 17-year-old man handed the officials migration documents, issued in Austria and identifying him as an Egyptian national, during checks on a night train early on Friday morning near the German-Austrian border. While police were looking at his papers, the young man escaped into another compartment, opened the window and jumped out of the moving train, two young American women who witnessed the incident told the police.

Police closed the tracks and discovered the body.

Federal police had registered the man on the German-Austrian border a few weeks ago and sent him back to Austria, a Munich police spokesman said.

Combat boots and bowlers: Chanel women dress for 'not that sweet' world

[AlAhram] Veteran Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld, sent his models down the catwalk on Tuesday ready for a world that is "not that sweet" in black leather combat-style boots with hard and flattened bowler-shaped hats.

High heels were nowhere to be seen as models walked for half a mile, snaking around rows of gilded chairs to the sound of techno music.

"Women need to be ready to defend themselves ... in a world that is not that sweet," Lagerfeld, 82, told Reuters after the show. "It's not the bourgeois cocktail hat, the ladylike hat, this is another kind of hat, I wouldn't say aggressive, but more protective."

The Grand Turk
The rage against the Constitutional Court
[Hurriyet Daily News] When The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s Constitutional Court took a fateful decision on Feb. 25 to release imprisoned journalists Can Dundar and Erdem Gul, the Western media hailed it. Here was the proof that at least some checks-and-balances still existed in Turkey, as there is some "independent judiciary" left.

Notably, this argument was put forward by none other than Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu earlier this week during a presser in Brussels. Answering criticisms about the lack of a free press in Turkey, the prime minister referred to the Constitutional Court and defined its recent decision as proof of an independent judiciary.

This was nice to hear, of course, but only until one flies from Brussels back to Turkey and sees what the current regime actually thinks of the Constitutional Court and the plans for its future (by "regime" I am not referring to the Davutoglu government, but rather the much higher and bigger pyramid of power spearheaded by the president).

What this regime thinks about the Constitutional Court is actually very clear: It is very angry at the top court and is now mobilizing to curb its powers, even perhaps to fully disestablish it in the "new civilian constitution."

This anger is visible everywhere. First, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
spoke several times against the Constitutional Court, blaming it for "violating the constitution." When the court released a 33-page document explaining the legal basis of its decision, Erdogan said he did not have time to read the document, and repeated his accusations against the court, which were actually all refuted in the document.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag, an Erdogan confidante, went further and blamed the top court for "killing law." The pro-Erdogan media went even further, with headlines and editorials every single day demonizing the high court as a treacherous body occupied by the nefarious "parallels." Here is an illegitimate "tutelage" on the "national will," they keep saying, which must be subdued by the "nation" (i.e. the president).

No wonder plans are now being made to fix this systemic problem. As pro-Erdogan daily Yeni Safak announced joyfully on March 8, the government is now working on a new set of legal amendments which will curb the top court’s authority to intervene in local court’s processes for "the protection of the violation of rights." Since some of these "local courts" are clearly designed and mastered by the government, you can read this as the elimination of the last stronghold of an independent judiciary.

If the top court’s authority is really curbed, or somehow intimidated or transformed, then we will really have to say goodbye to the notion of human rights

in Turkey as a higher value than the political ambitions of the ruling party. The only remaining hope will be the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which still has the right to penalize Turkey, as a state, for "violation of rights."

But, well, Erdogan seems to have solved that problem as well, for he declared, regarding the ECHR, "We will pay whatever their penalty is; it is not binding." So, we do not want EU legal standards in Turkey, we’d rather find ways to override them.

By looking at all this, I feel really pessimistic about Turkey’s near future. Let’s all just pray and hope that this is an exaggerated pessimism.

6 Minnesota Somali organizations receive grants to combat terrorism
Six organizations that work with Somali youth in Minnesota have been awarded $300,000 in grants as part of a federal pilot project designed to combat terrorism, the nonprofit group that is administering the funds announced Thursday.

The grant recipients include a youth sports group, a program that empowers Somali parents, an organization that plans to enhance youth employment opportunities and a group that addresses mental health issues for refugees. An additional $100,000 has been set aside to help with technical assistance, professional development and other resources with the goal of keeping the programs going on their own in the future.

After five years of civil war, it’s time to bid farewell to Syria
The view from Israel:
[IsraelTimes] The former state is gone and will never return. A regime of sorts survives in Damascus, but it takes its orders from Iran

Approximately five years have elapsed since the popular protest against Bashar Assad’s regime began in Syria — a protest that spiraled into a blood-drenched civil war that has claimed the lives of nearly half a million people. After years of battle, murder, massacre, and even attacks with chemical weapons, no end seems to be in sight.

Five years in, the only thing that can be said with any certainty (this is the Middle East, after all) is that Syria in its former guise — a state with clearly defined borders and a single government based in Damascus — is no more. It has passed from the world, (evidently) never to return. What remains is an area of land that is split, torn, and divided among hundreds of groups of armed men fighting against one another and working hard to wipe out anything that might be left of it.

al-Nusra troops battle it out with rebels in Idlib
ARA News

ERBIL – The U.S.-backed FSA-group ‘Division 13’ launched raids on the Al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front) on Saturday after tensions between opposition supporters and Nusra in Idlib last Friday.

“Division 13 is a FSA group that is backed by Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and received U.S.-delivered TOW anti-tank rockets,” Nusra member Abu Saeed al-Holandi told ARA News in Idlib.

The TOW-rockets played a major role in expelling the Syrian government from the province of Idlib.

Nusra Front said it would do everything necessary to defend areas under its control in northern Syria, after being attacked by the moderate Free Syrian Army (FSA) group on Saturday.

Division 13 shares a presence with the Nusra Front in several areas in northern Syria.

“In an unexpected step, and in a difficult time in the blessed Syrian revolution, all were surprised by the faction ‘Division 13’ raiding the headquarters of Jabhat al-Nusra in the city of Maarat al-Numan,” said the Nusra front in an official statement.

“And they were not sufficed with that; rather they (as well) raided some of the houses of members of Jabhat al-Nusra in the city,” the Nusra front said.

“We don’t attack the FSA, and they fought the regime. The province of Idlib is almost completely liberated from the regime, apart from two small villages,” the Nusra fighter Abu Saeed al-Holandi told ARA News.

However, supporters of the FSA accuse the Nusra Front of attacking anti-regime protests, following the cessation of hostilities on 27 February.

“There is a lot of popular anger within the opposition over Jabhat al-Nusra’s aggressive activities toward more secular-oriented demonstrators, which has led to calls for action from within the moderate opposition for protesters to be protected from Jabhat al-Nusra,” said Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security.

“Division 13 is one of the most influential rebel groups in northern Syria and it has significant tensions with Jabhat al-Nusra over how to build governance in rebel-ruled areas,” he added.

Experts suspect that more clashes will erupt in the province of Aleppo between FSA groups and the Nusra Front.

“These clashes are the result of long-boiling anger within the armed opposition as a result of Jabhat al-Nusra trying to muscle into the moderate armed opposition’s turf, and from it trying to dominate civil society in rebel-ruled areas,” Heras told ARA News.

The Nusra front called on the FSA to stop the internal fighting.

“And we call upon all of the wise ones to rectify the situation to save the blood, and to correct the direction of the rifles of the Mujahideen,” Nusra said in the officially released statement.

But it will be difficult for the FSA to stop the fight with Nusra due to Western pressure on the FSA to push them to fight against Jihadist groups.

“The moderate rebels are under a lot of pressure to demonstrate that they can confront al-Qaeda and prevent it from entrenching its power in rebel-controlled Syria,” Heras added.

“The two have long been competing for influence there and in the surrounding areas. As long as the truce persists and demonstrations continue, clashes will continue,” Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi, research fellow at the Middle East Forum, told ARA News.

“There will be localized clashes, but not necessarily full-blown civil war. In Maarat al-Numan it’s easier to take on Nusra as Division 13 is stronger and there isn’t a Jaysh al-Fatah administration,” he added.

In an interview published by the Atlantic magazine on March 10, Obama described his decision to step back from planned military strikes, which would have changed the course of Syria’s brutal five-year-old civil war.

"I’m very proud of this moment," Obama said.

"The overwhelming weight of conventional wisdom and the machinery of our national-security apparatus had gone fairly far," Obama was quoted as saying.

"The perception was that my credibility was at stake, that America’s credibility was at stake. And so for me to press the pause button at that moment, I knew, would cost me politically."

Critics argue that Obama’s decision did damage to American credibility that will not be healed quickly or easily.

"The fact that I was able to pull back from the immediate pressures and think through in my own mind what was in America’s interest, not only with respect to Syria but also with respect to our democracy, was as tough a decision as I’ve made - and I believe that ultimately it was the right decision to make."

American Shaboob gets prison for lying
A Somali man who admitted lying during immigration proceedings and a terrorism investigation was sentenced Thursday in San Antonio to eight years in prison, as he steadfastly denied any link to a suspect in bombings in Uganda six years ago that killed more than 70 people.

Abdullah Omar Fidse has never been charged with terrorism but the FBI says it has tied him to al-Shabab, an Islamic militant group in East Africa aligned with Al Qaeda.
Good enough for me...
Prosecutors said a phone number agents found in Fidse’s cell phone’s memory card link him to Mohamed Suleiman, a suspect facing trial in Uganda over the deadly, simultaneous bombings that took place in that country in July 2010 during the World Cup final. Militants with al-Shabab took responsibility for the attack, which also killed and injured Americans.

In December 2012, Fidse pleaded guilty to lying on an asylum application he submitted after he and a woman he traveled with were detained at the Hidalgo port of entry on the Texas-Mexico border in January 2008. He also pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents who were investigating his alleged affiliation with terrorists.
But we don't need any security on our southern border according to Champ and Loretta...
The terrorism investigation was opened after one of Fidse’s fellow inmates at an immigration jail in Pearsall told the feds
That's Wally the Weasel, reducing his 10 to 20 down to a 3 to 5...
that Fidse had made statements supportive of terrorists and saying he had paid for a $100,000 armed “technical” vehicle for al-Shabaab that was destroyed in a 2006 battle in Somalia. So-called “technicals” are often pickups mounted with a machine gun. He was later recorded “advocating for global jihad against infidels,” prosecutors claim.
If Wally wore a wire he's out on parole this very day...
“Without any doubt, the FBI was conducting a terrorism investigation into the defendant’s past terrorism activities and current potential terrorism activity; had it not done so, the FBI would have been neglecting its duty to protect the homeland from a terrorist in its midst,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Roomberg wrote in a sentencing memorandum in Fidse’s case.

At Thursday’s hearing, Roomberg told U.S. District Judge Fred Biery that when confronted by the FBI, Fidse lied about his past and his affiliations and by doing so, obstructed the FBI’s efforts to learn about potential terrorist plots.

“I will admit we are speculating that maybe the (bombing) plan could have been disrupted, but at least we could have passed the information on,” Roomberg said.

Fidse’s lawyer, assistant federal public defender Molly Roth, said her client disputes “many, many facts in this case.”
"Lies, all lies! Your honor."
For instance, she said there is no evidence Fidse put the number linked to Suleiman in the memory card, and said the informants or someone else said the things the FBI accuses Fidse of saying in detention.

“This case is about words and words alone,” Roth argued. “Mr. Fidse … is not a terrorist. There is no evidence he intended to promote (terrorism) directly or by obstruction.”

Roth asked Biery to sentence Fidse to the time he’s already spent behind bars, which includes time in jail awaiting immigration asylum proceedings. She argued that without a terrorism enhancement, a measure that increases a defendant’s sentence, Fidse only faced up to six months in jail.

But Biery enhanced the sentence, giving Fidse four years on each count, stacked.

It was the second time Biery had sentenced Fidse to eight years. After the first time in 2013, Fidse appealed and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated Fidse’s sentence because it said Biery didn’t clearly state his rationale for a terrorism enhancement to raise Fidse’s sentence.

This time, Biery made sure said the government had established sufficient evidence and noted findings supporting the enhancement, including that Fidse made statements linking him to terrorists and the technical vehicle and that the disputed phone number was that of the bombing suspect Suleiman.

Ship of Ghosts
The Story of the USS Houston, FDR's Legendary Lost Cruiser, and the Epic Saga of Her Survivors

James D. Hornfischer
Bantam Dell, Random House, 2006

I picked this book up solely on the performance of Mr. Hornfischer's book Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers. That decision was a well rewarded leap.

Ship of Ghosts is one of Mr. Hornfischer's three (at the moment) installments of the World War II Pacific Theatre actions, including in chronological order: Ship of Ghosts, Neptune's Inferno, and Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers. For full effect, though they are not back-to-back books, I would suggest reading them in this order.

It is 1941, and for those opposing the Japanese, it looks very dark as Japan is rolling up all opposing forces. One of the few holdouts is in the Dutch East Indies, the location of the Dutch government in exile. On the heels of the December 8/7 opening hostilities, the USS Houston barely makes sea. (Page 32)

..."We had hardly cleared Iliolo entrance when we heard gunfire astern of us and saw a ship aflame," Cdr. Arthur Mahar recalled. Hidden in the dark backdrop of Panay's mountain ranges, the Houston avoided notice of the Japanese pilots. She joined a pair of Asiatic Fleet destroyers, the Stewart and the John D. Edwards, in escorting two fleet oilers and the old seaplane tender Langley out of the war zone.

Anyone overconfident about America's prospects against Japan might have asked why the invincible U.S. fleet was on the run. En route to Surabaya, Captain Rooks called his officers and department heads to the executive officer's cabin and informed them that war had started. On December 10 more than fifty twin-engine Japanese bombers struck Cavite unopposed, burning out most of its key installations, destroying the harbor facilities, and sinking a transport ship. When Tokyo Rose came on the radio that night, she purred an optimistic report that President Roosevelt's favorite heavy cruiser had been sunk. The men of the Houston were at once flattered and unnerved by the attention. Embracing their status as a priority target not only of the Japanese military but of its propagandists too, they would coin a defiant nickname for the ship: the Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast.

On January 15, ABDACOM (American, British, Dutch, Australian command) under Admiral Hart is formed to present a last line of defense of the resource-rich Dutch East Indies.

Mr. Hornfischer's well referenced book presents the dire, detailed series of actions versus the Japanese in a careful, creative description which leaves action movies in their little kids' chairs. (Page 80-81)

For the Allies, the seeming ritual nature of the engagement ended less than an hour after it began. A medium-caliber projectile struck the Java, while an eight-incher arced down and slammed into the Houston. The latter passed through the main deck aft of the anchor windlass, penetrated the second deck, and tore through the starboard side above the waterline without exploding. Another hit ruptured an oil tank on the Houston's port side aft, but it too failed to explode. Either the warheads were duds or the ship's treaty-mandated limitations on weight, which dictated lighter armor protection than would become typical for a heavy cruiser, paid the dividend of failing to detonate a projectile engineered to sink ships with heavier hides.

Mr. Hornfischer recounts the final actions of the Houston and ABDA fleet in a manner I can only describe as "they may just make it", as he does in all three of the aforementioned books. The second topic of this book details the after-action of the ABDA fleet and other Allied soldiers and sailors who were enveloped by the operations of the Japanese. (Page 232-233)

Fujita had plenty to lose in his dealings with the Japanese. His father's countrymen, his captors, had no idea of his true heritage. Fujita didn't quite know why. He assumed they took him for a Filipino or a Mexican. Though his name was as Japanese as could be, no one paid him much attention. But his buddies did. "Hell, they are going to kill you," they would tell him. "Change your name. For God's sake, don't tell them you're half Japanese." Fujita was scared. He had no doubt they were right. Yet he could not quite pull the trigger on adopting a racial disguise. "If I change my name to Joe Martinez or something, well, when they kill me anyhow they might have me listed as Joe Martinex, and then my folks will never know what happened to me. So I figured hell, I was born with this name, and I might as well die with it."

On November 28 he found himself jammed with 2,200 other men aboard the Kamakura Maru, at 17,500-ton Japanese passenger ship. Each man had a single canteen to last him the ten-day voyage. The ship left Singapore and stopped at Formosa, where some POWs debarked. Continuing north, the ship reached Japan on December 7, 1942, and docked at Nagasaki, the home Fujita's father had left in 1914. The northern winds were cold on his face.

You may be familiar with the movie Bridge Over the River Kwai. The third topic of this book covers the plight of the POWs who were involved in the building of the Japanese rail plan in Indochina. Mr. Hornfischer reports with a particular scowl towards that famous movie as disingenuous to the events which actually happened. Mr. Hornfischer relays the stories of overworked, underfed, diseased people impressed into hard manual labor in an unforgiving environment, and how they fought their own battle of subterfuge. (Page 336-337)

While some were chosen to stay in the mountain camps and maintain the railway against erosion and bombing and the varied sabotages of a defiant jungle, most were shipped to camps in western Thailand. Boarding boxcars to ride the narrow-gauge railway themselves, the evacuees thought of their efforts at sabotage, of the soft pilings they had bolted in place and the weak sports in the embankments they had cultivated, and worried those might be instruments of their own demise. "It was more or less like a Toonerville trolley," said Gus Forsman. "The boxcars swayed an awful lot, and you wondered - especially when you went across a bridge or something like that - whether it would hold, or whether you were going to go crashing in."

Among the efforts of the Allied forces to prevent a transportation project across previously unnavigable terrain, often resulting in the bombing deaths of POWs, is this innovation: (Page 355)

It was a largely uncelebrated technical achievement - the Allied nations' first smart bomb - that made it possible finally to destroy the great bridge over the Rive Kwae Noi. The newfangled bomb known as the VB-1 AZON was delivered to the Seventh Bomb Group's 493rd Squadron in late 1944. It was a thousand-pounder equipped with a gyro, solenoids, and moveable fins to hold it steady in free fall, and a radio receiver and servometer to steer it left or right. The acronym "AZON" stood for "azimuth only," indicating the limited (though revolutionary) extent of steering control the bombardier had over the weapon in flight. There was no way to adjust its range in free fall, no way to flatten or steepen its trajectory. But it could be guided left and right by visual means, as a powerful flare burned in its tail fin. Against a long, narrow target such as a bridge, control over one dimension of the trajectory was usually enough to greatly improve the chance of a hit.

Mr. Hornfischer's book is well referenced, and the hardcover version contains many photos, including Sgt. Frank Fujita and various depictions of the Houston from shipyard to a replica of an oil painting highlighting a Japanese crew preparing to launch torpedoes towards it.

I highly recommend Mr. Hornfischer's series of books, especially Ship of Ghosts. As even Mr. Hornfischer notes, the plight of the Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast and her sister ships of the ABDA has been overshadowed by the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Policeman shot in Narathiwat ambush
[Bangkok Post] A police officer was seriously injured in an attack by motorcycle gunmen on a police post in Narathiwat province. The shooting took place at a security post in Rangae district on Friday afternoon in full view of passers-by.

Four men aboard two motorcycles with no license plates passed the post and two of them fired eight shots at Pol L/C Wichitsak Phetcharat. One shot hit him in the right arm. The attackers fled.

The wounded officer and four colleagues who were inside the post did not return fire for fear stray bullets might hit people nearby.
Security camera footage captured the four attackers, with the two drivers wearing full-face crash helmets. One of the gunmen wore an Islamic tunic and his face was not covered.
