Gawker Owner Nick Denton Whines About The Hulk Hogan Verdict
The decision by a Florida jury to grant $140 million in damages for a story on Gawker.com about a Hulk Hogan sex tape was extraordinary. The number is far larger than even the plaintiff himself had asked for in relief. It’s a huge pay-day for an indiscretion that would have been quickly forgotten, one among many in the professional wrestler’s personal life.

The enormous size of the verdict is chilling to Gawker Media and other publishers with a tabloid streak, but it is also a flag to higher courts that this case went wildly off the rails. The plaintiff’s lawyers, with the occasional assist from our witnesses, successfully painted Gawker as representative of an untrammeled internet that good and decent people should find frightening and distasteful. Emotion was permitted to trump the law, and key evidence and witnesses were kept from the jury.

A state appeals court and a federal judge have already held repeatedly that the 2012 commentary and short video excerpt, which joined an existing conversation and explored the public’s fascination with celebrity sex tapes, were newsworthy. We have had our day in trial court, and we lost. We will have our day back in appeals court, and we will be vindicated.
Couldn't happen to a bigger scumbag nicer guy.

I heard it my law course as, if you have the law pound the law; if you have the facts pound the facts, if you have neither pound the table.

Unusual pizza order delivers police to hideout of Paris jihad mass murderer Salah Abdeslam
"One large pie with the severed heads of Infidels, please." No, actually, it was just the quantity ordered that gave away the hideout of Salah Abdeslam.
Check out the pizza cardboard box in the article.
An unusual pizza order led police to the safe house of one of the masterminds behind the Paris terror attacks, ending a four-month manhunt.

Salah Abdeslam, 26, who masterminded the logistics behind the November 13 attacks on the French capital that left 130 people dead, was discovered hiding at a friend's flat. The home was just metres from the house in which Abdeslam had grown up in Molenbeek, Brussels – an area which has come under increased scrutiny in recent months after it was discovered three of the terrorists in the Paris attacks, including Abdeslam, were raised there.

Police first suspected Abdeslam was in the area after they found his fingerprints on a glass at a nearby property that was raided as part of the manhunt.

Abdeslam's friend, Abid Aberkan, had been under surveillance since attending the funeral of Abdeslam's brother, Brahim – a fellow Paris terrorist. Police were fairly certain that Aberkan was harbouring Abdeslam, but it wasn't until the pizza order that their confidence was confirmed.

"We were fairly confident he was there but the giveaway was the pizza order," a police source told The Sun.

Aberkan's mother ordered six pizzas. With police knowing that only three people lived in the property, they raided it and recovered Abdeslam….

Are We Ready for Reality after the Brussels Terror Attacks?
h/t Instapundit
Are progressives going to murder our children with their political correctness?

Brutal as that sounds, that's a serious question we must all be asking ourselves after the terror attacks in Brussels. Everyone knows such events could easily happen here (where our population dwarfs Belgium's and therefore opens us to a far greater catastrophe numerically) and yet our progressive and liberal friends -- even and especially the moral narcissists running for the Democratic presidential nomination -- refuse to name radical Islam as the perpetrator of the attacks.

Let alone Islam itself, the true culprit.

...We live in a culture where someone threw a punch at a Donald Trump rally -- not remotely the mayhem at your average British soccer match -- and our media goes into a dither. Then they warn us about Islamophobia -- a junk term, if there ever was one -- in the wake of mass murder in the name of Allah.

Something wrong? Of course. Something is very wrong. Western civilization is on a suicide run and we all get to watch.

Well, I suggest we stop watching and do something about it.

First of all, that requires facing reality. As I mentioned, it's not radical Islam but Islam itself that is the problem. Throughout the world, young Muslim children are being taught from holy books to separate humanity between Dar al Islam (the House of Islam) and Dar al Harb (the House of War). That indoctrination seems to have worked. Those of us in the West apparently do live in Dar al Harb, as recent events demonstrate too clearly.

...Does that sound racist? Well, fine. I assure it is nowhere near as racist as anything you would find in the Koran. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of seeing innocent people murdered in Allah's name.

Vessel Carrying Plutonium Departs Japan Port for US
I sure hope that this ship is fully escorted. I would imagine that they would do a circuitous route around the Cape of Good Hope. Certainly not through the Panama Canal. It would be good to avoid the Straits of Malacca, too.
A nuclear transport vessel carrying a huge cache of plutonium -- enough to produce 50 nuclear bombs -- to be returned to the US left a Japanese port on Tuesday afternoon.

The stockpile, provided by the United States, Britain and France decades ago for research purposes, is being shipped to the US as part of a bilateral storage deal.

Television footage by national broadcaster NHK showed containers being loaded on to the Britain-registered ship at a port in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, close to where the highly-toxic substance has been stored, and the ship leaving the port.

The vessel carrying the 331 kilogrammes (730 pounds) of plutonium departed at about 3 pm (0600 GMT) under tight security guarded by patrol boats of the Japan Coast Guard, according to NHK.

The government "cannot reveal" the vessel's itinerary or any other details, an official told AFP, but anti-nuclear campaign groups said it will take two months for the ship to arrive at a nuclear facility in South Carolina.

A Japanese official told AFP last week that the material will be disposed of in the US.

Five anti-nuclear groups, including Greenpeace, said in a joint statement on Tuesday released ahead of the vessel's departure that the shipment "exposes the failure of global plutonium reprocessing programmes and the threat from current Japanese nuclear policy."

The stockpile has caused disquiet among anti-nuclear campaigners and neighbouring countries given Japan has the know-how to produce a nuclear weapon -- even as it adamantly chooses not to.

The shipment comes ahead of a nuclear security summit in Washington from late this month, and is meant to underscore both countries' commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.

But anti-nuclear campaigners including Greenpeace last week condemned the shipment as a "dangerous distraction" from what they said is a far larger cache of roughly 10 tonnes of plutonium in the country.
It's called, "insurance."
In Beijing, China's foreign ministry on Tuesday called on Japan to take further steps to reduce its stockpiles.
Beijing naturally would want Japan to be non-nuclear. I would imagine that Beijing would reciprocate.
"In addition, it should return large quantities of other materials, including weapons-grade plutonium and enriched uranium," ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters.

"This is indeed a concern of the international community."

Japan traditionally has relied heavily on nuclear technology for its energy needs, though the aftermath of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster led to all of the country's reactors being shut down, with only a few coming back on line so far.
I will bet that you won't see this ship on the Marine Traffic app, heh.

#1  If one could build an explosive shell around a 730 pound plutonium core how big could the bang be?
Posted by: Glenmore || 03/22/2016 16:10 Comments || Top||

#2  You will never get a 730 lb plutonium core because it would be critical before you assemble it. Better to have the classic fission booster, followed by a can made of plutonium, with a center cylinder of plutonium, filled with lithium deuteride (the classic spark plug for fusion).

#4  Liberian Flag? Philipino/Indonesian crew?
Posted by: Shipman || 03/22/2016 19:49 Comments || Top||

#5  The Nagasaki bomb converted about 1 gram of the plutonium to energy. The spontaneous fission depends on how much plutonium 240 is in with the plutonium 239 as 240 is very unstable. The Nagasaki plutonium core weighed 6.2 kilograms. The reason for the low effectiveness is the speed at which the reaction occurs blows apart most of the fissible material before it can react. The effectiveness has increased since WWII, It is still only about 1 in 3000. The uranium bomb dropped on Hiroshima was a bit less than 2% efficient, in other words 2% of the uranium was converted to energy.

Bangladesh central bank weighs lawsuit against NY Fed over cyber heist
Bangladesh's central bank has hired a lawyer in the United States for a potential lawsuit against the New York Federal Reserve after unknown hackers stole $81 million from its account with the U.S. bank, an internal report said.

In one of the largest cyber heists in history, the hackers breached the computer systems of Bangladesh Bank (BB) in early February and succeeded in issuing instructions to the New York Fed to transfer $81 million to accounts in the Philippines.

The hackers also tried to move $20 million to an obscure non-profit entity based in Sri Lanka but that transaction was halted because they misspelt the recipient's name.

The heist has prompted the resignation of Bangladesh's central bank governor, Atiur Rahman, and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now helping the country to track down the cyber crooks.

BB said in an incident report dated March 13 that it had been the subject of a sophisticated cyber-attack in which 35 payment instructions were issued to the New York Fed. Of those the U.S. bank blocked 30 while allowing the rest to go through.

"We view this as a major lapse on the part of FRB NY," BB said in the report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

It said the bank was considering "preparing the ground to make a legitimate claim for the loss of funds against the FRB NY through a legal process".

A source at the central bank confirmed the authenticity of the report.

The New York Fed has said it followed normal procedures in allowing the transfer of the funds and that there was no evidence that its own systems had been compromised.

Bangladesh police are still collecting information from the central bank's computer systems to determine who was behind the heist. In its report, BB said it was pursuing all avenues to recover the money.

In Sri Lanka, a court has imposed a travel ban on six directors of the Shalika Foundation to which the hackers transferred money, a lawyer said on Tuesday.

The transfer of $20 million, ostensibly for a rural electrification project, was held up because the hackers had spelt the entity as Shalika "Fandation".

Shalika, based near the capital Colombo, is headed by Hagoda Gamage Shalika Perera and her residential address was also given as the firm's address. Calls to her and another director went unanswered.

Lessons on how to be a big bully.
The incident happened Saturday as Indonesian surveillance vessels tried to detain the trawler suspected of operating illegally near Indonesian islands in the South China Sea.

After stopping the boat and removing eight crew members, the Indonesians were towing the vessel to shore when the Chinese coastguard appeared and rammed into the detained boat, helping to release it.

However, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying insisted Monday that the area near Indonesia's Natuna Islands was a "traditional Chinese fishing ground", and that the Chinese boat had to be rescued by coastguards after facing harassment from an Indonesian vessel.

Indonesia does not have overlapping territorial claims with China in the South China Sea, unlike other Asian nations. But it objects to China's "nine-dash line" defining its claims since this overlaps Indonesia's exclusive economic zone around the Natunas.

The Natunas are a string of islands rich in fish on the far northwest fringe of the archipelago.

Indonesia in 2014 launched a tough crackdown on illegal fishing which involves sinking foreign vessels caught fishing without a permit after impounding the boats and removing the crews.

Trump offers job to woman at DC news conference
h/t Instapundit
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, during a news conference in Washington on Monday, offered a job to a woman who said she was survivor of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Trump called the woman forward and asked her about her experience after she asked whether his new hotel in the District of Columbia would hire veterans.

"Here's what I'm going to do, stand right over here," he said to the woman.

"If we can make a good deal in the salary, she's going to probably have a job."

When asked why he decided to take the risk to promise a job to someone he did not know, Trump said that he "felt good about her."

"I have a gut instinct. We are allowed to have that," he said as the woman smiled and teared up.
It's a pleasure to see a maestro operate. People who say "He can't win against Hillary", should consider the above little overture.

FBI Gets a Hacker to take a Whack at Cracking the Apple Phone
"On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking Farook's iPhone," the Justice Department's lawyers wrote in a court filing. "Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone. If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple...set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case." The government is "cautiously optimistic" that this new strategy "will allow us to search the phone and continue our investigation."

If authorities have found a software or system vulnerability into the iPhone, Apple's lawyers said they will file a motion to obtain discovery and insist on knowing everything about the method-including who the third party is that discovered it and the nature of the zero-day vulnerability.

The government has been heavily criticized in the past for withholding information about vulnerabilities in software so that law enforcement and intelligence agencies can use them to exploit. The White House insisted last year that it discloses about 90 percent of vulnerabilities to software makers so that they can be patched instead of exploited.
And if you can't trust the White House, ummm, fugettaboutit.
But the government has also admitted that if a software hole has "a clear national security or law enforcement" use, officials may choose to keep information about the vulnerability secret in order to continue exploiting it.
That's assuming they could actually keep a secret, without Hillary's e-mail leaking it.
The FBI's change in tactics may partially be a result of the wave of public support Apple has received in its case, along with a slew of amicus briefs filed to the court on its behalf. Everyone from privacy activists, to law professors, to iPhone-focused hackers, to fellow tech giants including Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook made statements in Apple's defense, arguing that the software the FBI demanded Apple create represented an undue burden on the company, set a dangerous precedent, and would ultimately lead to the weakening of Americans' digital security.

Most observers of the case have guessed from the start that Farook’s phone likely didn’t contain much data of interest; investigators had already accessed an older backup of the phone, and admit that a metadata analysis also found no evidence of terrorist ties.

Caribbean-Latin America
Castros welcome Obama to Cuba with a slap in the face
[Wash Post] President Obama went sightseeing in Old Havana, savoring the adulation of pro-regime crowds welcoming him on streets that had been whitewashed for his visit. But a few hours before his arrival, the true nature of the dictatorship he is embracing reared its ugly head, as hundreds of uniformed security personnel attacked and arrested peaceful protesters leaving Palm Sunday Mass.

A group of dissidents known as the Little Sisters of the Poor Ladies in White was met outside Havana’s Santa Rita church by an organized crowd of Castro loyalists shouting insults and revolutionary slogans. Then, The Post reports, Castro’s secret police pounced on the women and "half-dragged, half-carried them to waiting buses," while men marching with the women "were chased, thrown to the curb and handcuffed." As they were arrested, the crowd chanted "This is Fidel’s street!"

This was a slap in the face to President Obama -- a display intended to send a clear message that, despite his normalization of relations, nothing has changed in Cuba.
Take THAT! You jankee communist wanna-bees !
How little respect do the Castro brothers have for Obama? This month, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes met in Miami with Carlos Amel Oliva, head of the youth wing of a major dissident organization on the island. When Oliva returned to Cuba, he was detained by the regime for "antisocial behavior." His was just one of 526 political detentions in the first two weeks of March leading up to Obama’s trip.
But meeting with a member of the Obama regime actually is "antisocial behavior."
Obama had promised not to visit Cuba under such conditions. In 2014, Obama said he would visit Cuba only if "I with confidence can say that we’re seeing some progress in the liberty and freedom," adding: "If we’re going backwards, then there’s not much reason for me to be there. I’m not interested in just validating the status quo."

Iraq
Second attack on U.S. Marine firebase in Iraq
[CNN] For the second time in three days, the first U.S. military firebase in Iraq has come under attack from ISIS. The base, known as Firebase Bell, came under small arms fire from a group of about 10 ISIS fighters who also attacked a nearby U.S./Iraqi installation at Makhmur in northern Iraq.

No U.S. personnel were wounded, and at least two ISIS fighters were killed, according to Army Col. Steve Warren, the coalition spokesman. Warren said he didn't have an exact distance of how close the gunmen came to the U.S. security perimeter, saying only "a couple of hundred meters, I would assume."

The remaining attackers "ran away in fear," Warren said.

A U.S. Marine stationed at Firebase Bell was killed by an ISIS Katyusha rocket attack on Saturday. Eight U.S. troops were also wounded in the attack. Three were medivaced to Germany where one is described as having serious injuries a defense official told CNN.

The U.S. believes the firebase was deliberately targeted by ISIS fighters who were aware it was there, Warren said. He noted the helicopters bringing in troops and equipment were readily visible. But the defense official noted that there are several ways ISIS could have learned the Marines were there, "You can't hide 200 Marines," the official said.

The U.S. currently has between 4,500 and 5,000 troops in Iraq on a regular basis, about 1,000 over the stated limit. This includes the 200 Marines that are at the firebase along with 200 special operations forces whose presence is not publicly acknowledged the official said.

The coalition refused to publicly reveal the exact number of U.S. troops currently in Iraq, with Warren only telling reporters that it was within 3,870 troops. "There's been a decision made not to release that number," he said.

Warren added that Congress had been informed of the methodology the military used to calculate troop levels.

On Sunday, the coalition announced that in consultation with the government of Iraq, the U.S. "has assigned a detachment of U.S. Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the support of Iraqi Security Force and Coalition ground operations. The detachment from the 26th MEU will add to the Marines and Sailors currently in Iraq" supporting the effort against ISIS."

The U.S has similar artillery at two other large Iraqi bases, but Bell is the only known firebase. That terminology signifies this is a small remote location designed to use its artillery to support infantry troops at forward locations.

The Marines will be using their field artillery, including the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, in the coming weeks to help defend Iraqi troops as they move towards Mosul. For now, the artillery is to defend another nearby base where American troops are getting 5,000 Iraqi forces ready for the operation to retake Mosul.

#1  Bell came under SAF (Small Arms Fire) but only 2 of the 10 attackers were killed? Counted ten did you? Air support? Pursuit?

The remaining attackers "ran away in fear," Warren said.

Fear? A ten man ISIS element engages a Marine fire base with SAF out of fear? It was a probing attack Colonel. They were simply doing as instructed. Please terminate the Pentagon drivel and get those people ready for the main attack. Is having a Marine fire base overrun with U.S. captives led away a regime 'legacy' for an incoming pub administration ?

#2  The Daily Beast: ISIS Knew Just Where to Hit These U.S. Marines

"The U.S. military quietly acknowledged that the line between offensive and defensive warfare in Iraq blurred in Makhmour, as many expect the fire base to be part of the eventual fight to reclaim Mosul. Moreover, the defense officials said the fire base was to be the first of several, though they stopped short of specifics.

Even though they were at the front lines of the push toward Mosul, the Marines did not count in the U.S. military’s official figures of troops in Iraq. Rather they were listed as serving a temporary-duty assignment and therefore not part of the official 3,870 count of troops in Iraq [File under "How to Cook The Books - VRWC] . Up until Monday, the U.S. military has said fighting troops were part of their official figures."

Multiple injuries at Belgium airport after 2 explosion heard
Multiple people were reportedly injured in an explosion at a Belgium airport Tuesday morning after two explosions were heard, according to Sky News.

"I was in the duty free in Zaventem Airport and I heard two very, very loud explosions," an eyewitness told the UK based news agency.

Update at 0730 CT: Apparently the first bomb hit the American Airlines check in counter at the Brussels Airport. Daily Mail UK story here.
Update at 1400 CT: ISIS, of course, claims responsibility. It will take some time to figure out if they're telling the truth or lying so as to confuse us. The count is now, per Belgian authorities, at at least 31 killed and under 200 injured.

#34  We can say all we want about trump. But the fact remains. Our leadership in Washington is corrup, does not care about the people they are supposed to represent, and are driving our nation into ruin. Our president is posing for pictures next to a mural of his childhood hero, his closest friends are supporters of terrorism, and he gave nukes to our number one enemy that for the last 30 years has had the sole focus of destroying America. Our congress has done nothing to stop him and have supported him at nearly every turn. The democrats put up a habitual liar and criminal as their front runner and a socialist/communist as their number two. The Republican Party has Ted Cruz and rhomney as their guys. And we are complaining about trump? Our government needs an overhaul and that comes in one of two ways. The first is to elect outsiders and destroy the status quo or the other is with armed revolution. No one wants the second, except maybe our current president. With both parties fighting to keep their corruption and fraternal biases in place it is clear to me our nation need a good hard look inward and our democracy needs to get the vermin rooted in Washington out of positions of power. Any other candidate than trump will keep business as usual going in DC and that is the last thing we need. If trump offends a few people along the way. So be it.

#42  I agree with much of your post #34, 49Pan, saving only this:

Our congress has done nothing to stop him and have supported him at nearly every turn.

The current and previous Congresses have had Republican majorities, but not enough to override a presidential veto. This limited what they were able to accomplish, given Democratic Congresscritters who toed firmly the party line. Also, the Republicans there have been divided between the long-term establishment and the tea party newcomers, the latter being numerous enough to prevent things they didn't want from getting done, but not enough -- and not organized and experienced enough -- to persuade the old hands to join them in making the things they did want happen.

John Boehner was not able to herd those cats. It remains to be seen whether his successor is more effective.

The Republican Party has Ted Cruz and rhomney as their guys.

Rubio was the GOP establishment's man this time round. They loathe Cruz, for reasons I fail to grasp. Governor Kasich has my dream resume: private industry, tapped to serve a previous president, Congress, governor. A shame he is the wrong man for the time, but he clearly is.

I'm grateful that Mr. Trump has moved the Overton Window, as they say (I'll look up the term one of these days), and forced discussion of a lot of things that needed to be discussed. My concern is that he is not a politician, only a user of politicians in exchange for donations, and that he'll be eaten alive by the Democrats and the bureaucrats if he wins. Look what they did to George W. Bush, who'd been the Republican governor of formerly Democratic Texas.

IS claimed responsibility in an online statement. “A number of Caliphate soldiers wearing explosive belts and carrying explosive devices and machine guns attacked places that were carefully chosen in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, and stormed the Brussels airport and the metro station and eliminated a large number of crusaders and then detonated their explosive belts,” read the statement. The statement included a typical threat: “We promise the crusading nations that have allied against the Islamic State that there will be black days in response t their aggression against the Islamic State. What is coming will be far more terrible, with the help of Allah.”

#60  @#56: Unless Dubai nationals are planning on secreting themselves in golf bags bound for the US, don't see the connection.

That Mr. Trump has stated that we should temporarily (you did listen to him, right?) keep out Muslims until we can work out an intelligent policy of excluding those that wish to kill us is prudent, not racist. How, btw, are things going in Sweden?

That Trump may be our cleanest dirty shirt gives me little but hope for something better.

Not holding my breath.

#61  I'm afraid we have no choice but to put Muslims on hold until we can get a handle on the situation. It's a corollary of "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you." The world has been given no choice by a bunch of terrorists wolves hiding amongst migrating sheep. The terrorists have forced us to take this unpopular route, but by God I will take it if I have to, no matter how much it sorrows me. Hopefully we can figure out a better way before the terrorists come for your neighbor or even you. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm certain that honest sheep will just have to understand that we have to do what we have to do. And the complicit sheep will complain. Shoot them, too.

I could live with Cruz. He has a better developed and integrated understanding of the world, at least for now. I have been watching Trump learn from zero, and he's picking it up fast enough for my liking.

But I prefer Trump. He has way more business experience, and we'll need that to get the beacon relit (prosperity first, the rest will follow). His instincts as one guy are worth more than all the other experts combined so far, too. All-in-all, I believe he will honestly look for and find solutions that are minimally influenced by our self-serving elite. Of course they will blackmail and hold him hostage as best they can to serve their own interests, but he's in a better position to resist than all the rest except for maybe Cruz.

The national army and popular resistance in Yemen has announced they have gained control over large parts of the city of Huraib in the Ma'rib province following fierce battles with the coup supporting fighters and Houthi militias.
Howzat ceasefire thingy workin' out?
In a statement carried by the official state news agency last night, a Yemeni military source said that the national and resistance armies, with support from the Arab coalition forces, were able to recover a number of areas in Ma'rib, including a military base and part of Al Hashfa.

The source added that fighting is still ongoing and that the allied forces are advancing forward while the Houthi militias are fleeing towards Al Shakir.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
The Quds and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Benghazi connection
[Wash Times] In the aftermath of the 2012 Benghazi attack that killed four Americans, Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn tasked the intelligence community for information on Iran’s involvement in the attack.

Until now, government officials have refused to acknowledge any Iranian involvement in Benghazi. But the Flynn memo indicates that at least some in the U.S. intelligence community suspected Tehran from the very beginning.

A top secret Sept. 21 memo responding to the director’s inquiry and disclosed as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request from the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch includes fragmentary information on al Qaeda affiliates. But its conclusions regarding Iran’s notorious Quds Force, a deadly hybrid of intelligence and special operations, have been totally redacted.

Now retired, Gen. Flynn told The Washington Times that, for classification reasons, he could not discuss the memo’s redacted contents or talk about his four hours of secret testimony for the House Special Benghazi committee. He did note, however, that a recently declassified trove of letters from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden reveal that Shiite Iran was willing to help Sunni militants if the common foe was the United States.

The U.S. military has crossed swords with Iran’s Quds Force in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Yemen where the Quds Force used a similar tactic to what sources believe they use in Benghazi: infiltrating a paramilitary operations team into a hostile environment under cover of humanitarian aide workers for the Red Crescent Society, the Muslim equivalent of the Red Cross.

A Red Crescent team from Iran arrived in Benghazi, Libya on July 30, 2012, ostensibly to provide humanitarian aide to the post-Gadhafi revolutionary regime. The secret CIA Annex operating in Benghazi had been tipped off and dispatched local "watchers" to track their movements, according to Dylan Davies, a British security contractor in charge of the local guards protecting the Benghazi facility.

"Everyone knew the Iranians were in Benghazi," former CIA security officer Kris "Tanto" Paranto said in an interview. "Especially once the Red Cross [Red Crescent] team from Iran was ‘kidnapped’ by Ansar al-Shariah, we knew about them and were tracking them."

The polio vaccination cover works so much better. Keep up the good work General !

If the Iranian sanctions were just eased a bit, some sort of WMD 'deal' involving great sums of money, etc, etc, perhaps no one on their side will say anything about the Benghazi Quds Force involvement.

#2  Always thought it could be the Persians behind this.

Either Takavar or Spetsnaz, although the Persians were much more 'invested' in FSA arms interdiction at the time and this article's information seems to say that they had the opportunity to be in the area.

#4  The preplanned targeting of the indirect fire on the CIA compound, with quick adjustments through a probable forward deployed FSO who made accurate call for fire adjustments suggests a level of crew training and target adjustment practice uncommon among the ragtag remnants of the locals in Benghazi. Conversely, such a skill set from an Al-Quds/Spetznaz force team would be expected. Add the new revelation about the timely Red Crescent team insertion with "supplies" and their strange "kidnapping" to provide plausible deniability, and poof, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.....

Tripoli fighting over Jumhouriya Bank control: Rada
[Libya Herald] The Abu Sleem unit of the Rada (“Deterrance” Forces) have claimed that today’s fighting in central Tripoli’s Bab Ben Ghashir district was the result of an attempt by a militia to take over the branch of the Jumhouriya Bank in the district. It says it has now secured the area.

It did not name the unit.

The main Rada organisation, however, has said nothing about it on its Facebook page and is not answering the phone.

Most banks in Tripoli have kept their doors closed to the public because they have no cash. There is considerable anger in the city as a result.

Bab Ben Ghashir is now quiet and roads in Tripoli now all open.

Two key commanders among 12 militants killed by FC
QUETTA: Frontier Corps personnel claimed to have killed at least 12 suspected militants, including two key commanders, in Balochistan's Kohlu district on Monday.

The miscreants in Kohli's Nasau area were killed in exchange of fire during a security forces' operation in the area, and a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from their possession, spokesman Frontier Corps Khan Wasey said.

The miscreants were involved in attacks on security forces and vital national installations in the area, he added.

The miscreant commanders were identified as Jamir and Baloch Khan, Wasey said, adding that the dead miscreants belonged to a banned militant organisation operating in the area.

"Exchange of fire is still underway", Wasey said.

Security forces have intensified their actions in Balochistan after the announcement of National Action Plan to combat terrorism in the country.

Jean-Pierre Bemba Convicted at ICC of War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity
[NBCNEWS] A high-ranking Congolese politician was convicted unanimously Monday of war crimes and crimes against humanity in a landmark case at the Hague.

The charges against Jean-Pierre Bemba — a former rebel leader and vice president in the Democratic Republic of Congo — related to rapes, murders and pillaging allegedly carried out by his fighters.

Bemba was the highest-ranking official yet to be convicted by the court and showed no emotion as the unanimous verdict against him was read out Monday at the Hague.

His marathon trial — which began in November 2010 — was the ICC's first to focus on crimes committed in Central African Republic (CAR) and the first to recognize rape as as war crime.

Bemba faced three war-crimes charges and two counts of crimes against humanity — for allegedly commanding the MLC militia which raped, murdered and pillaged between 2002 and 2003 in neighboring CAR's civil war.

The trial focused on the question of "command responsibility" — i.e. whether Bemba should be held legally liable for alleged crimes committed by fighters under his control. It also was the first case to focus so heavily on rape as a war crime, according to the Open Society Foundations.

Trump faces test with Israel speech
[FOXNEWS] While today’s American Israel Public Affairs Committee Conference has drawn nearly all the presidential candidates to Washington, the brightest and potentially harshest spotlight falls on Donald Trump. Whether Trump will make waves or smooth the concerns of Jewish voters will garner close scrutiny and will test his ability to prove his foreign policy bona fides.

Over the course of his campaign the Republican frontrunner has had issues connecting with Jewish groups. When speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition in December, Trump made a few cracks using comedic stereotypes, saying in his speech, "Is there anyone in this room who doesn’t negotiate deals? Probably more than any room I’ve ever spoken."

Trump has also gotten into hot water with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When Trump called for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, Netanyahu expressed disagreement with the proposal, which in turn led Trump to cancel a planned trip to Israel.

Trump also rattled nerves at a town hall event last month when he said that he’d be "neutral" between the Israelis and the Paleostinians, a reversal of the United States’ position as a staunch ally of Israel. In an interview with the AP, Trump appeared to lay much of the fault for a lack of a peace agreement at the feet of Israel saying, "A lot will have to do with Israel and whether or not Israel wants to make the deal -- whether or not Israel’s willing to sacrifice certain things," [continuing] "They may not be, and I understand that, and I’m OK with that. But then you’re just not going to have a deal."

"Any Israeli war on Leb would be an uncalculated adventure," he warned, reassuring that "through its readiness, expertise, military skills and stance, the resistance has made the Israelis realize that any war on Leb will be very costly."

Tunisian Forces Kill 'Terrorist' near Border Attack Town
[An Nahar] Tunisia's security forces have killed a "terrorist" outside the southern border town of Ben Guerdane where jihadists mounted a deadly assault earlier this month, authorities said Monday.

"A terrorist element holed up in a house was killed in the Sayah area" near the Libyan border, the interior and defense ministries said in a joint statement.

Security forces found his body after several hours of heavy festivities, a security source said.

Ten members of the security forces and one civilian were maimed in the fighting, a Ben Guerdane hospital official said. Three are still in hospital.

The army and security forces have deployed around Ben Guerdane since jihadists launched a dawn assault on security installations in the area on March 7, killing 13 members of the security forces and seven civilians.

The security source said the Monday raid came as part of an operation launched Sunday to target the alleged killer of an official in the security forces during the March 7 assault.

On Monday morning, President Beji Caid Essebsi met Prime Minister Habib Essid to discuss "the security situation in Ben Guerdane," a statement from the president's office said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the March 7 attacks, but authorities blamed them on the Islamic State

ISIS troops capture 5 Syrian Army checkpoints in Hama
[ARA News] HOMS – Subsequent to fierce clashes, the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) captured five military checkpoints for the Syrian regime army in Hama province, military sources confirmed on Monday.

Speaking to ARA News in Hama, rights activist Louay Baroudi reported that ISIS took over five checkpoints from the pro-regime forces near Mount Shaer in the Hwesis district–on the highway that leads to the Shaer oilfield.

“Daesh seized control of those checkpoints after bombing positions of the regime’s army, killing over 20 Syrian troops on the checkpoints and destroying three tanks and two armored vehicles,” Baroudi said, using an acronym for ISIS.

The hardline group seized a large deal of light and medium weapons, and two tanks (type T 55 and T 62), the source reported.

“Today’s operations come as the group tries to ease the pressure on its militants in the city of Palmyra and its surroundings,” Baroudi told ARA News. “Also, ISIS launched several attacks on the pro-regime forces stationed in the Shaer oilfield, forcing them retreat to ad-Duwwa district.”

5 suicidal ISIS miscreants die near Kobane
[ARA News] KOBANE ــ Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) were able Monday to kill five suicide bombers from the extremist group of Islamic State (ISIS) near Kobane in the Syrian province of Aleppo, military sources reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, YPG spokesman Haboun Osman reported that several ISIS gunmen, dressed in YPG uniforms, tried to infiltrate into the Kurdish city of Kobane through a Kurdish-held checkpoint in southern Sirrin.

“The YPG fighters clashed with them and were able to kill three suicide bombers who blew themselves up during the clashes,” according to the source.

“Two ISIS jihadis tried to flee, but our fighters (YPG) were able to shoot them dead as well,” the spokesman said, pointing out that the Kurdish forces extended their military operations in the area on Monday evening in search for other insurgents.

The ISIS move comes while thousands of Syrian Kurds gather in Kobane and other Kurdish areas in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran to celebrate the Kurdish National Day “Newroz“. The terror group was apparently trying to target Kurdish celebrators, according to activists.

The hardline group considers all Newroz celebrators as apostates, and that they must either repent or be bought to a Sharia court for prosecution and punishment.

Iraq
Jihadist Attack Kills Six Soldiers in Western Iraq
[An Nahar] At least six soldiers were killed Monday in an attack in western Iraq claimed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group that began with five jacket wallahs ramming explosives-laden vehicles into a checkpoint, officials said.

Several foreigners were among the bombers, including a Frenchie, according to a statement by IS which said its fighters carried out the attack.

A senior officer in the Iraqi army, manning the checkpoint near the town of Al-Baghdadi in Anbar province, said nine soldiers were also maimed.

He told AFP that after the suicide kabooms some 25 jihadists launched an assault on the checkpoint, the main one on the road leading to Al-Asad air base, where a large number of Iraqi troops and foreign advisers are stationed.

The officer said most of the gunnies were wearing boom jackets.

About five hours of festivities ensued, he said, and all the attackers were killed, with the support of strikes from the U.S.-led international coalition.

Malallah al-Obeidi, who heads Al-Baghdadi local council, confirmed the details of the attack and said Iraqi forces were in control of the checkpoint.

IS, in its statement posted on social media, claimed that the battle was still ongoing.

It also gave names or noms de guerre for five "martyrdom knights" that suggest at least four of the bombers were foreigners.

Among them was a Frenchie, "Abu Zubayr al-Faransi", as well as a Jordanian and Turk.

"Clashes erupted with the enemy of Allah and the mujahedin (holy warriors) managed to control a checkpoint called Majid and a large nearby post," the statement said.

The group claimed 60 soldiers were killed or maimed, that some of their equipment was seized and fighting was ongoing.

Al-Baghdadi lies on the Euphrates river, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

Iraqi security forces have in recent days been involved in a major push to retake the city of Hit, which lies further along the river and is controlled by IS myrmidons.

They are closing in on the town from Al-Baghdadi and from Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province which was fully retaken from IS last month.

The vast operation to flush IS out of cities in Anbar has displaced tens of thousands of people and fighting is far from over.

"We fear that as many as 50,000 individuals will be displaced in the upcoming days as the military operations continue," said the Norwegian Refugee Council's program manager, Salah Noori.

Ruling Party Seals Expected Victory in Kazakhstan Vote
But I think we all saw this coming...
The ruling party of energy-rich Kazakhstan's ageing autocrat President Nursultan Nazarbayev
...has served as the President of Kazakhstan since the Fall of the Soviet Union and the nation's independence in 1991. Contrary to commonly held belief, there is a difference between Kazakhs and Cossacks: Kazakhs have mustaches. Or maybe it's the other way around...
secured a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, results showed Monday, a poll OSCE observers said failed to meet international democratic standards.

According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) Nazarbayev's Nur Otan party won 82 percent of votes in Sunday's election and will share parliament with the pro-government People's Communist Party and Ak Zhol, who each secured just over seven percent of the vote.

The vote -- which saw little real opposition to Nazarbayev -- came as the ex-Soviet country sees its once-booming economy slump on the back of falling oil prices and an economic crisis in northern neighbor Russia, but the strongman's grip on power appears as firm as ever.

Celebrating the victory with supporters on Monday, Nazarbayev -- who during the poll warned outsiders "not to rush" Kazakhstan towards democracy -- said he was in a "joyful state" following the announcement of the results.

"Our party has won. The 77 percent turnout is a record and 82 percent of votes received for Nur Otan -- a record!" he said.

"We demonstrated to the whole world open, direct voting on a competitive basis in the presence of thousands of international observers and journalists."

But an international vote monitor mission headed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said Monday that "genuine political choice" was "insufficient" in the vote and that the country "still has a considerable way to go" in meeting international standards for democratic votes.

3 charged, 1 nabbed on Iran sanctions evasion charges
[IsraelTimes] Suspects conspired to defraud banks, violate US sanctions in hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of transactions

Three people have been charged with conspiring to evade US sanctions against Iran, and one has been tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
after they processed hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions on behalf of Iranian businesses or Iran’s government, authorities announced Monday as they unsealed an indictment in New York.

Reza Zarrab, a 33-year-old resident of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, was arrested Saturday at a Miami airport while two others remain runaways on charges that they conspired to violate sanctions against Iran and Iranian entities. A message for comment left with Lee Stapleton, a lawyer for Zarrab, was not immediately returned after her client was detained following an appearance in Miami federal court.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said the men conspired to conduct hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of transactions barred by US and international economic sanctions. They said the defendants were working on behalf of the Iranian government and Iranian businesses.

They said the two men and a woman were helped by co-conspirators as they used an international network of companies in Iran, Turkey and elsewhere to launder the proceeds of the illegal transactions and defraud several financial institutions, including US banks, by concealing the true nature of the financial moves.

Diego Rodriguez, head of the FBI’s New York office, said the crimes were carried out from 2010 to 2015. He said the charges should send a message to others who try to hide their true business partners.

70 Syrian naval spec ops die near Palmyra
[ARA News] HOMS ــ Militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Monday killed 70 members of the naval commando forces from the Syrian army in the western suburbs of historic Palmyra, in Syria’s central Homs province, media sources reported.

The group’s news agency of Amaq released a report saying: “Islamic State’s fighters were able to kill 70 marine commandos in a car bomb attack in the Duwwa area west of Palmyra.”

“The operation also led to the death of the Division’s commander, Rahmoun Askar,” Amaq reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, rights activist Amr Hussein said that pro-regime army bid farewell to dozens of naval commando forces in Palmyra on Monday subsequent to the ISIS-led attack.

“A state of alert hit the ranks of the regime’s forces after the attack, which came as a shock to the army,” the source reported.

This comes as clashes continue between ISIS and the Syrian army in the Duwwa area west of Palmyra. The army has recently advanced against ISIS in Palmyra with the support of the Russian warplanes.

In May, the hardline group took over the ancient city of Palmyra after fierce battles with Syrian army forces. The group has executed dozens of captured soldiers in the Roman amphitheater, and destroyed several ancient shrines and Roman monuments.

Rangers arrest MQM Deputy Convener Shahid Pasha
KARACHI: Rangers personnel arrested Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Rabita Committee (Coordination Committee) Deputy Convener Shahid Pasha in a raid early on Monday morning.

MQM spokesperson Wasay Jalil confirmed that Pasha was taken by Rangers into their custody during a raid at his apartment in the Gulistan-i-Jauhar area of the metropolis.

The arrest was condemned by MQM's leadership.

The arrested suspected was presented in an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) where the administrative judge was informed regarding Pasha's preventive detention for three months.

The court also ordered the formation of a joint investigation team to probe the charges against the MQM leader.

Pasha was made deputy convener of the coordination committee a year ago, and is believed to be an important figure in MQM's organisational structure and has held various posts with the political party.

The arrest comes after MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar, in an earlier press conference, had accused the Rangers of torturing and interrogating "40 under-trial prisoners" belonging to the MQM imprisoned at Karachi Central Jail, and "pressuring the workers to leave the party".

He alleged the workers were being forced to fill out a pro forma and told that they would be allotted every facility in prison, cases against them would be withdrawn and they would be released only if they changed their loyalty.

MQM lawmakers staged a walk out from the Sindh Assembly in protest against Pasha's arrest.

Notices to DG Rangers, IG Sindh
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday issued notices to DG Rangers Maj Gen Bilal Akbar, Inspector General of police Sindh A. D. Khawaja and Sindh home secretary seeking their comments on a petition filed by the family of Shahid Pasha.

The petition stated that law-enforcement agencies personnel picked Pasha up from his Karachi residence early on Monday. However, even after the passage of several hours, he could not be located nor was his arrest made public.

A two-judge bench of SHC after hearing the petition issued notices to Rangers and Sindh police, directing them to file their comments by April 11.

The hearing was subsequently adjourned.

's Kurds on Monday marked the annual spring festival of Newroz with a call for the resumption of peace talks between the government and Kurdish bad boys, but four Turkish soldiers were killed in another rebel attack in the restive southeast region.

The appeal from the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP) for peace talks also coincided with a pledge from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to use all the country's military and intelligence might to crush terrorism following a spate of suicide kabooms, two claimed by Kurdish bad boys.

Since last year's Newroz festival Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast has seen a big upsurge in violence due to the collapse of a 2-1/2 year ceasefire in July between the Ankara government and bully boyz of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

In the latest attack, PKK fighters launched a kaboom on a military vehicle in the town of Nusaybin near the Syrian border, security sources said. The army said four soldiers were killed, while five soldiers and a police officer were maimed.

The attack came as Kurds marked the Newroz festival, a traditional rallying point for PKK supporters who on Monday waved party flags and pictures depicting their incarcerated

Representatives of the Jewish Agency for Israel, a quasi-governmental organization that assists in Jewish immigration, said the group included 12 Jews from the town of Raydah in northern Yemen and a family of five from the capital, Sanaa.

They will join close to 200 Jews who have been brought to Israel secretly over the past few years, as well as a much larger community of Jews with Yemeni origins who came to Israel more than 60 years ago.

Professor Uzi Rabi, an expert on Yemeni Jews at Tel Aviv university who assisted in bringing the latest group of Jews to Israel, said that only about 40 to 50 members of the community now remain in Yemen. Most of them live in a specially guarded compound where the foreign embassies are located. They are not interested in leaving their homeland, he said.

Slovenia not ready to take down razor-wire fence
[WASHINGTONPOST] The Slovenian government says the country will only take down most of the razor-wire fence along its border with Croatia when it is fully convinced that the deal between the European Union

The office of Prime Minister Miro Cerar said Monday that Slovenia is still likely to keep the fence standing at certain parts of the border but could replace it with a different kind of obstacle.

The Slovenian statement says the obstacles have helped police control the border.

Croatia has repeatedly protested against the border fence between the two EU countries, which was erected by Slovenia last year at the height of Europe’s migrant crisis. More than half a million migrants colonists have passed through Slovenia since last fall.

11 Hizbullah-Linked Lebanese Declared 'Persona Non Grata' in Kuwait
[An Nahar] In a new series of expulsions, Kuwait has deported eleven Lebanese and three Iraqis after it has been proven that they belong to Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
, the Kuwaiti al-Qabas daily reported on Monday.

"They have been deported at the request of Kuwait's state security apparatus," the daily quoted a Kuwaiti security source as saying on condition of anonymity.

"The Assistant Undersecretary for Citizenship and Passports Major General Mazen Al-Jarrah has formed a specialized team to follow up on the requests of the state security with regard to the deportation requests," the source stated.

"The State Security has prepared a new list that includes names of Lebanese and Iraqis some of whom are general managers or senior advisers in reputable companies who were declared persona non grata," it added.

"They should be deported for Kuwait's public interest," it pointed out, adding that "their expulsion will prevent them form entering the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the future."

The move comes shortly after Kuwait announced last week that 1,100 Lebanese and Syrian nationals will be banned from renewing their residence permits for having direct links to Hizbullah.

Several of the expelled were forced to leave the country within a period of one month while the more "dangerous ones" were requested to leave immediately.

Last week, the Kuwaiti al-Rai newspaper said that Kuwaiti authorities have started to prepare lists of Hizbullah supporters to prevent their arrival in the country and others in anticipation of their deportation.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Will Hillary get charged, or what ?
No. Next question.
I'd go with "What."
[New York Post] FBI chief James Comey and his investigators are increasingly certain that presidential nominee Hillary Clinton violated laws in handling classified government information through her private email server, career agents say.

Some expect him to push for charges, but he faces a formidable obstacle: the political types in the Obama White House who view a Clinton presidency as a third Obama term.

With that, agents have been spreading the word, largely through associates in the private sector, that their boss is getting stonewalled, despite uncovering compelling evidence that Clinton broke the law.

Exactly what that evidence is -- and how and when it was uncovered during Comey’s months-long inquiry -- has not been disclosed. For the record, the FBI had no comment on the matter, and government sources say no final decision has been made.

Clinton denies she did anything wrong, claiming she had no idea she was getting classified information (a violation of federal law) on her private server during her years as Obama’s secretary of state because the documents she received contained no such headings.

And as FBI director, Comey can only recommend charges to the hacks in the Obama Justice Department. Indeed, many law enforcement officials who know the FBI chief and the bureau’s inner workings believe the evidence would have to be overwhelming for Comey to even recommend charges, much less for DOJ to pursue them.

Still, some FBI staffers suggest the probe's at a point where Comey might quit in protest if Justice ignores a recommendation to pursue a criminal case against Clinton.

Just how close Comey is to any recommendation -- whether to indict or exonerate Clinton -- is difficult to know. But agents believe the probe is nearing an end. A State Department staffer who set up Clinton’s email server, for instance, was recently granted immunity from prosecution to provide Comey’s team with evidence.

"You don't start granting people close to Clinton immunity unless you are seriously looking at charges against your target," one former official told me.

#1  Here is link to an excellent 45 minute video about the corrupt failure of the DOJ to prosecute any of the arch criminals at Goldman Sachs, following that bank's ruthless plundering of it client's funds, during the period leading up to the 2008 financial crisis.

http://youtu.be/eHgbRYgpGGs

The way that this ties in to Hillary's Treasongate situation is in how the video details the DOJ's use of the illegitimate concept of avoiding "potential consequential collateral damage" (to ostensibly "innocent" parties) as a basis to decline to prosecute blatant crimes.

The video basically demonstrates how the DOJ avoids prosecuting its crony associates by claiming that it is necessary to overlook blatant and serious crimes, in the interests of the "greater good" - because even investigating such crimes might potentially cause market or social disruptions.

This approach is tailor made for allowing the sneering Hilligula to escape justice.

Syrian Kurds Defend Federal Plan, Deny Autonomy Aim
[An Nahar] A Syrian Kurd representative defended Monday the proclamation of a Kurdish federal region in northern Syria, saying it was not meant to be autonomous and only for Kurds.

The Kurds and their allies unilaterally proclaimed a federal region in the war-ravaged country last week, but critics said it would undermine Syria's unity and lead to its partition.

"We don't aspire to create an autonomous zone that is exclusive to the Kurdish nation," said Rodi Osman, director of the Syrian Kurd's representative office in Moscow.

"We envision to install a federal regime, democratic and secular, in which all parts of Syrian society can live and by which they will feel themselves represented," he told news hounds.

Both the Damascus government and the main Syrian opposition grouping involved in U.N.-brokered peace negotiations in Geneva have rejected last Thursday's move by the Kurds.

Washington has said it will not recognize any autonomous regions they set up under their planned federation and says that Syria's future system of government is something to be negotiated in the U.N. talks.

But it has also said that it will continue to work closely with the Kurds, whom it regards as the most effective fighting force against the Islamic State

Kurds comprise about 15 percent of Syria's population and Kurdish fighters have been backed by Washington in the battle against the Islamic State group.

Syria Army Inches Closer towards IS-held Palmyra
[An Nahar] Battles raged around Palmyra Monday as Syrian soldiers backed by Russian warplanes sought to recapture the ancient city in what would be a major symbolic victory over the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Troops and allied militia backed by Russian air power have since early March been pushing an advance around the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Pearl of the Desert".

They are now just four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the gates of the city that fell to the jihadists in May last year, sending shock waves around the world.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor, the advance has been "slow" despite some 800 air strikes by Russia and the Syrian regime this month alone.

Last week, the army recaptured a strategic hill at the southwestern entrance of Palmyra, four kilometers from the city.

IS has fiercely resisted the advance, killing at least 26 pro-government fighters on Monday, the Observatory said.

Aamaq, an IS-linked website, claimed that 30 troops were killed in an attack by a jihadist jacket wallah.

"Meanwhile,
...back at the desert island, Irene was indignant at the thought of doing such a thing without benefit of clergy...
warplanes believed to be Russian struck parts of Palmyra city and its surroundings in the east of Homs province, as well as al-Qaryatain in the southeast," the Observatory said.

"The battle for Palmyra is decisive for the regime, as it paves the way for the recapture of the desert area all the way up to the eastern border with Iraq," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

"IS would automatically lose the desert stretching from Palmyra to the Iraqi border -- in other words, 30,000 square kilometers (12,000 square miles)," he added.

That would cut IS' area of control from some 40 percent of Syrian territory to 30 percent, the Observatory said, adding that jihadists could then be pushed across the border into Iraq.

Home Front: WoT
Feds gain postponement of iPhone hearing
Citing a new possible way to access a locked iPhone used by a shooter in the San Bernardino terrorist attack, the Justice Department on Monday convinced a federal court to cancel a Tuesday hearing on whether Apple should be forced to help the FBI break into the device.

Government lawyers had insisted for months they needed Apple to write special software so the FBI could bypass security features on the iPhone being used by the San Bernardino shooter, Syed Farook, and obtain what could be critical information for their ongoing terrorism investigation.

But the Justice Department unexpectedly told the court just hours before a scheduled hearing that it may not need Apple’s assistance after all.
So they were lying and were using this as a way to force Apple to capitulate? When Apple said "hell no" they came up with Plan B? Or is Apple wrong and there is a way to crack the phone after all?
"On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking Farook's iPhone," federal prosecutors said in a filing Monday afternoon. "Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone. If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc. ('Apple') set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case."

For the moment, the DOJ’s move hits the pause button on a case that has pitted Washington against Silicon Valley in a fierce debate over the role tech companies should play in terrorism investigations. The Justice Department now has until April 5 to test its prospective technical fix, which law enforcement sources, speaking with reporters on Monday, repeatedly declined to detail.

Apple did not immediately comment on the decision. Earlier Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook affirmed his company’s intent to fight this and other cases where the government seeks greater access to digital data. As he unveiled his company’s latest iPhone, Cook pledged on stage in San Francisco that Apple would not “shirk from [its] responsibility” to protect its users.

In the San Bernardino case, the Justice Department had asked a federal magistrate in February to require Apple to write software to help unlock Farook’s password-protected iPhone. Apple doesn’t retain a copy of device passwords, and the iPhone is programmed to erase itself after too many failed attempts to unlock it. The DOJ wanted the company craft special software to remove the restriction.

Federal Magistrate Sheri Pym initially sided with the DOJ in February, drawing a sharp rebuke from Apple, which lambasted the government’s request as a digital “backdoor.” In the eyes of the tech company, a win for the government would set a dangerous legal precedent, allowing the Justice Department unparalleled access to all digital communications in other major national security investigations. Apple argued Congress never gave law enforcement such power, and doing so now would only encourage foreign governments to seek the same access in the future.

In its filings with the court, the Justice Department initially argued it had no option to obtain the data other than ask for Apple’s help — even as security experts suggested the FBI might have been able to extract the phone's contents by other means. FBI Director James Comey was grilled about a potential technical solution by lawmakers like Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Capitol Hill earlier this month.

The DOJ did not specify in its court filing Monday, however, exactly how it planned to obtain the contents of the San Bernardino device. Nor did law enforcement officials, speaking to reporters on background, explain who their “outside source” was or how the FBI got in contact with them.

"As a result of these efforts, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI this past weekend a possible method for unlocking the phone," a DOJ spokeswoman said in a statement. "We must first test this method to ensure that it doesn’t destroy the data on the phone, but we remain cautiously optimistic. That is why we asked the court to give us some time to explore this option."

Another Cossack formation commander detained in Lugansk

Another Cossack military formation commander for the separatists of Lugansk was detained by Lugansk authorities several days ago to face charges including robbery, rape, kidnapping and murder, according to Russian language news accounts.

Vladimir Timofeev appeared to the prosecutor's office in Lugansk last Friday. He was immediately detained, and is currently held in prison in Lugansk.

Russian journalist Boris Rozhin, in noting the arrest said that four other formation commanders were detained the following day, but they were identified only by their Russian call signs: Sumpak, Tema, Son, Ytsyk and Malenkiy.
Those are call signs? Whatever happened to Berezka and Tyagach and Snegopad?
Give 'em a break. They're new.
According to Rozhin, their arrests were in connection with an incident involving members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

According to Rozhin, Ukrainian forces fired on members of the OSCE, which destroyed the two vehicles they were riding in. Timofeev, and presumably the four other commanders were charged with firing on the vehicles.

According to an news article which appeared in unian.net, Lugansk attorney general Leonid Tkachenko charged Timofeev with rape and murder in and around Stkhanov in northern Lugansk. A total of 20 reports had been received by authorities.

Several news site say that Timofeev was in Lugansk because he also was wanted in Russia for serious crimes.

Although Timofeev's ethnicity is unclear from news releases, Lugansk officials are sensitive to charges about Cossack formation commanders disappearing or being murdered. An unusually large number of them were either ambushed well behind the line of contact since December, 2014, or were detained and their formations disbanded or turned over to new commanders who were more cooperative to Lugansk officials.

It is an unlikely testament to Russian and Ukrainian language blogging in this region of the world that officials are so sensitive to charges they have repeatedly denied. Not even the accounts by friendly news outlets can cover up the stink.

The last Cossack commander to be killed, Colonel Pavel Dremov, was awarded an honorific for his regimental unit and was lavished with praise and medals until he was killed in an ambush between Pervomaisk and Stakhanov on December 12th, 2015. Dremov immediately after being rewarded the honorific was recorded in a Belorusian newspaper severely criticizing the Lugansk civilian leadership for hiding the fact that Debaltsevo was such a bloodbath for the rebels. Those criticisms came even after, Dremov claimed, he and other commanders had warned the civilian leadership about the attack on Debaltsevo.

Seven others besides Dremov have died or have disappeared in the preceding year, with charges leveled at Lugansk authorities for their alleged role in those commanders' demises.

According to a news report in ytro.ru, Tkachenko was quoted as saying, "I draw your attention to the fact that such actions of law enforcement bodies of the republic are not an attempt to discredit or eliminate" undesirable "people who position themselves as" defenders "of [Lugansk], but persons who commit crimes against their citizens. They are not advocates, they are common criminals," said Tkachenko.

Other reports say that Timofeev and the other detainees were involved in marijuana dealing around Stakhanov.

Rozhin, on his blog, made mention of the issue of smuggling, some of the routes of which go through Stakhanov, hinting Timofeev's unit may have objected to smuggling to Ukraine, including drugs and excise goods.

Several Cossack commanders, including Col. Dremov had openly objected to business dealings between Lugansk government officials and Ukrainians in coal sales.

Algerian Troops Kill Six Jihadists
[An Nahar] Algerian soldiers killed six suspected jihadists in an area near the Tunisian border on Monday, the defense ministry said.

They were killed in an "ongoing army operation" in El Oued province, 600 kilometers (370 miles) southeast of Algiers, it said in a statement.

Five Kalashnikov assault rifles, three machine guns and an automatic pistol were seized, it added.

The ministry did not link the operation to an assault on Friday claimed by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb on a gas plant in Krechba further south.

On Monday, Britannia's BP and Norway's Statoil -- who run the plant with Algerian company Sonatrach -- said they would temporarily pull out their staff from two gas facilities in Algeria after the attack.

Last month, Algerian troops recovered six Stinger shoulder-fired ground-to-air missiles and other weaponry in an operation in El Oued in which three suspected jihadists were killed.

A total of "157 terrorists, including 10 commanders" were killed or nabbed

"The Afghan National Army (ANA) forces are prepared for all kinds of devotion and with all force to maintain security and comfort for the people of Afghanistan," a statement by MoD said, adding that 6 Afghan soldiers were martyred during counter-terrorism operations against the internal and foreign terrorists.

The statement by MoD further added that 23 forces of Evil were killed, 5 forces of Evil were maimed during the clearance operations conducted in Nangarhar

s.

There has been a sharp rise in the casualties of the Afghan national security forces since they took full control of the security responsibilities from the coalition forces at the start of last year.

According to the earlier estimates by security officials, the Afghan army deaths stood at 4 service members daily on average which is mainly caused due to improvised bomb (IED) attacks.

The Afghan armed forces have stepped up counter-terrorism operations amid rampant Taliban-led insurgency during the past several months which has been unprecedented as the forces of Evil group was usually reducing insurgency activities during the winter time.

This comes despite ongoing efforts to end the violence through reconciliation process but the Taliban group has not shown a positive sign to participate in the talks so far.

Separatist forces in Donetsk and Lugansk fired on Ukrainian forces 32 times over a 24 hour period, charged Ukrainian military officials, according to Russian language news accounts.

Meanwhile, rebel military officials say that Ukrainian forces have hit their positions 43 times over a 24 hour peroid.

According to a news account which appeared in korrespondent.net, rebel forces in Donetsk fired on Ukrainian positions in Avdievka, Opytnoye, Peski and Marinka, all near western districts of Donetsk city. Weapons used by rebel forces included 125mm tank guns, grenade launchers, sniper and machine gun fire.

In Lugansk, Ukrainian military officials said that rebels fired on Svetlodarsk, Trehizbenki and at Novotroitskoye using 82mm mortar fire, grenade launchers and small arms fire.

According to official rebel news accounts, Ukrainian forces hammered rebel positions at the Donetsk airport and at Spartak using 120mm and 82mm mortars fire.

A separate rebel news release said that Ukrainians also hit rebel targets in western districts of Donetsk city including Petrovsky district and at Trudovskoy.

Further west, Ukrainian artillery hit rebel targets near Peski, Opytnoye and at Marinka.

Continuing fighting at Yasinovataya

According to a news account by a Donetsk separatist fighter identified as Ruslan Lyapin, fighting continues near Yasinovataya, the battle now entering its third week.

According to Lyapin, Ukrainian forces are hitting dug in rebel troops with everything they have, including 122mm artillery grenade launchers, mortars and 30mm autocannon fire trying to overrun those positions, only to be driven back.

Rebel media refuses to discuss their casualties in the battle and Ukrainian media barely acknowledges fighting near Yasinovataya. Other news reports say Ukrainian forces have lost seven effectives and 14 wounded in the fighting over the last three days, which is a number this writer has read on other publications as well.

Lugansk

According to a news report which appeared in regnum.ru, Ukrainian artillery struck at rebel positions in Slavyanoserbsk and Krasny Liman.

According to Lugansk official Andrei Marochko, forces belonging to the Ukrainian 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade near Boguslavsky Popasnyansky, were reinforced with six tanks and eight infantry fighting vehicles.

Donetsk military officials claim that the Right Sektor staffed Azov Regiment recently moved a motorized rifle company out of Mariupol in southern Donetsk to Vinogradoye, including 10 to 12 armored personnel carriers.

The Grand Turk
Turkish authorities hunt for 3 Islamic State terrorists at large
[IsraelTimes] Equipped with false identities, suspects said to have orders to strike again after Saturday’s deadly Istanbul bombing
Rear scorpions in your bosom, risk the occasional sting...
Turkish security forces were searching for three Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
operatives still on the loose with orders to strike again in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, local media reported Monday.

According to a report by the Dogan news agency, Haci Ali Durmaz, Yunus Durmaz and Salas Yildiz -- who was a prime suspect in Saturday’s Istanbul bombing -- are using fake identities and have orders to carry out additional terror attacks.

Pictures of the suspects were run in morning papers across the country, just days after a suspected Islamic State bombing on Istanbul’s Istiklal Avenue left four dead -- three of them Israeli -- and dozens injured.

Turkey’s interior minister on Sunday identified the jacket wallah who killed four foreign tourists in Istanbul as a bad boy with links to IS.

Minister Efkan Ala said the bomber was Turkish citizen Mehmet Ozturk, who was born in 1992 in Gaziantep province, which borders Syria. He said Ozturk wasn’t on any list of wanted suspects and that five other people were detained as part of the investigation.

Saturday’s kaboom maimed dozens of others. Among the fatalities were two American-Israelis, another Israeli and an Iranian. The attack targeted Istanbul’s pedestrian Istiklal Street, which is lined with shops and cafes in an area that also has government offices and foreign missions.

Europe
The Norwegian TV series that’s enraged the Kremlin
Okkupert (“Occupied”), the most expensive Norwegian television show in history, never mentions the word “quisling.” And yet its premise — a Russian occupation of Norway — evokes Vidkun Quisling’s Nazi collaborationist government and is permeated with the still unshakable trauma of that era.

Between 1942 and 1945, Quisling’s puppet regime revoked the authority of the Norwegian King (exiled to Great Britain after refusing German demands to abdicate), banned the entry of Jews fleeing Nazi terror, and fruitlessly committed Norwegian soldiers to the Eastern Front. At the end of the war, Quisling was executed and his name now dubiously lives on as an eponym for “traitor.”

Okkupert wrestles with a modern version of Quisling’s devastating legacy — and the shameful blot it left on the country’s history. The show is set in the near future, where a Green party government comes to power in Oslo on the heels of a hugely damaging global warming-related hurricane. Promising to unveil a revolutionary new form of nuclear energy powered by the chemical element thorium, Prime Minister Jesper Berg strikes a very Scandinavian pose by announcing that Norway will lead by example and immediately shut down its considerable gas and oil production.

This upsets the European Union, of which Norway is not a member. In cahoots with Moscow, Brussels secretly threatens Berg with a full-scale Russian invasion unless he commits to maintaining Norway’s fossil fuel extraction under Moscow’s supervision. (The United States, having recently achieved energy independence, has withdrawn from NATO and sits disinterestedly aside.) Berg reluctantly agrees to this scheme, promising his people that the insertion of Russian worker crews to restart Norway’s energy industry will be temporary.

Removal of Dostum’s photo sparks anger in Mazar as Noor warns against riots
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The removal of General Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
’s photo in Mazar-e-Sharif city in northern Balkh province has sparked furor among the supporters of the First Vice President as the acting provincial governor of the province Ata Mohammad Noor has warned strict actions against the possible riots.

In an online statement Noor said the photo has been removed by individuals who are looking to disrupt the stability of northern Balkh province.

Noor further added that the removal of the picture has sparked furor among certain people who are sending curse and are insulting the leadership of the province for the affront act.

He also ruled out that the party or the provincial leadership was involved in the act, apparently gesturing towards Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
party which is operating under his leadership.

Noor said several political and civil movements are operating in northern Balkh province and scores of pictures of Junish-e-Mili party can be seen in different parts of the city, including on the highway towards his residence.

He urged the people to refrain from chaos and moves that lead to disorders in the city and prevent destabilizing the stability of the local residents by repeating the bitter memories of the early 90s and 2000s.

The acting provincial governor warned of strict repercussions if his pleas for calmness were ignored, insisting that the leadership believes and respects tolerance.

Home Front: WoT
Dem says Russian subs 'dangerously close' to U.S.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is deploying nuclear-armed submarines "dangerously close" to the United States and European allies, a Senate Democrat said following a trip to the Arctic Circle.

"No one is suggesting that Putin is contemplating a nuclear launch against a NATO country, but it's not clear how tethered to reality Putin is," Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy told reporters Monday. "And it should make us nervous that many of his submarines are starting to get dangerously close to the U.S. and our allies."
Well Senator, you make a nice case to the press. How about making one to your leadership? Perhaps the Senate Minority Leader, Sec DoD, and President should hear what you're saying...
It' prob'ly because the evil Pubs cut military funding, damn them.
Murphy made the comments while arguing that the Navy needs to pursue an aggressive plan to replace aging American submarines, which can thwart rival countries from gathering intelligence and maintain the security of global shipping lanes.

In recent years, Putin's navy has pursued a more aggressive strategy even than during the Cold War, according to Murphy. "Russian submarines have been pushing out to the very precipice of NATO-ally waters," he said. "We have seen Russian boats coming closer to the U.S. and to our European partner ports than ever before, in immensely provocative ways — in ways that were rare even during the days of the Cold War."

Pentagon officials currently plan to scale back production of modern attack submarines in order to preserve funding for the Ohio-class submarines that carry nuclear weapons. "You're going have to look at this program with a national lens because if you drop this into the middle of a Navy shipbuilding budget it will just gut Navy shipbuilding for decades to come," Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told a House panel last week.

Murphy wants the Navy to build those Ohio-class submarines without cutting production of other modern attack submarines. "We've got to find a way to do both," he said. "If you look at the pace of Russian and Chinese building programs, we can't afford to drop Virginia-class production back to one for more than a year."
How many Ohio boats do we need? I'd think the attack subs are more useful right now...
