Wretchard: How the masters became impotent.

The Left's machinery of power has paralyzed it.

Dionne Searcey of the New York Times tries to explain, without much success, how the Boko Haram turns its teenage female hostages into into willing suicide bombers for Islam. "Boko Haram, one of the world’s deadliest extremist groups, has used at least 105 women and girls in suicide attacks since June 2014." Although the actual process of indoctrination was explained by one of the women who escaped from the camp, Ms. Amos, a Christian, who said "she was forced to enroll in Boko Haram’s classes on its version of Islam, a first step on her way toward being taught the art of suicide bombing," the article emphasized the use of drugs or food deprivation.

There was no alternative but to invoke a physical agency to explain the girls' willingness to die. The establishment press has lost its access to the rich vocabulary of religious belief or patriotism that once was a normal part of language. To explain Islamic suicide bombing -- indeed current events -- they have to make do with the meager and ridiculous glossary of Critical Theory studies, often deliberately foisted on America, as Michael Walsh shows in his book The Devil's Pleasure Palace as an actual joke.

The idea of the Critical Theorists was to break down American culture and turn everything upside down. They succeeded to a an extent undreamed of. Edward Rothstein, surveying the state of science museums observes that over the last two generations even "the science museum has become a place where politics, history and sociology often crowd out physics and the hard sciences. There are museums that believe their mission is to inspire political action, and others that seek to inspire nascent scientists; there are even fundamental disagreements on how humanity itself is to be regarded."

The catch to Critical Theory, as Walsh predicted, was that people would eventually learn that nothing worked in the left wing paradise. Turning atoms into anomie and mandating ladies' rooms be opened to transgender men turning into dragons would eventually result in a breakdown in the host.

Paul Krugman may now be afraid that the joke has gone too far. He warns in the NYT that actual catastrophe will result from a Bernie Sanders presidency. A "break up the big banks" is something you say but something he's thankful that Hillary's "pragmatism" would prevent. Ironically Clinton's strongest selling point may be that she's perceived as a liar where Bernie is perceived as sincere. Sanders may actually be dumb enough to believe the party's talking points; Clinton is thought smart enough to know better.

A palpable desire to get things under control is running through both political political parties because nothing is going as planned. Asked how Hillary could lose 8 out of the last 9 primaries to Sanders, a befuddled Charlie Rose confessed he could not explain how a "very, very good politician" like Hillary could have such a long losing streak. The GOP is also in dire straits with The Daily Beast reporting a "secret movement to draft General James Mattis" to head off Donald Trump.

It is as if the entire body politic were squirming to get out of a trap. With Trump the candidate of "anyone but the RINOs", Bernie the champion of "anyone but Hillary" and Mattis the standard bearer of anyone but either, nobody has any answers. Nobody can find an easy exit because the political class is trapped by a dogma of their own making. Whether it is president Obama vetoing 50 plans put forward by the CIA to topple Assad or former president Clinton apologizing for his remarks about Black Lives Matter, each is a prisoner of their self-subscribed official lies. As with the NYT article on the Boko Haram girl suicide bombers, neither the problem nor the solution can be characterized with the vocabulary allowed. Everyone must participate in a ridiculous charade where the things that will work are strictly forbidden.

After decades of amassing power the giant Western megastates find themselves curiously impotent, not only unable to act, but incapable of even describing their assailants as if they were the victim of a hit and run unable to recall the number of that truck.

Bernard Haisch in his book The God Theory tries to explain that we are trapped in a new kind of bigotry; that the more we learn about the role of consciousness and information in the working of reality the more reluctant we are to accept the utility of truth and to challenge the outdated 19th century mechanistic model of the universe. This conflict makes us like the robot of Lost in Space, trying to square a circle to find that It Does Not Compute.

Historical materialism is the foundation of Critical Theory, now the foundation of Western orthodoxy. The attitude is implictly conveyed in all the upscale talk shows and mini-series plotlines where truth is merely entertaining froth upon an uncaring universe; something to be manipulated, manufactured, revised and distorted according to convenience as George Orwell described in 1984. In that world no harm can come of the lie; no harm could come of aborting a child even minutes before it was due to be born.

Yet the possibility that lies are not harmless broke upon Sam Hamad when he realized that Noam Chomsky whom he formerly admired had "betrayed the Syrian people" and abandoned them to genocide in order to advance his dogmatic, monomanaical anti-Americanism. "In the past, Chomsky’s political stasis seemed virtuous to me," Hamad wrote. But what seemed virtuous in the abstract became monstrous when Chomsky started abetting the destruction of people whose names Hamad knew. "The part they [Chomsky's adherents] are playing in Syria’s counter-revolution is discrediting leftism. In this way, their actions are comparable to those "socialists" who destroyed the left for generations because of a blind loyalty to the nightmare of Stalinism."

And the Stalinists are still at it long after even Stalin is dead. Chomsky can't help himself any more than Obama or Bill Clinton could. He has to lie, not having noticed that somewhere along the line he's entered into an unnoticed transaction with someone or something that holds him in thrall rather then the other way round. The Great Linguistics Guru would be just as bereft of words as Dionne Searcey when it came to explaining why the Boko Haram can recruit suicide bombers because there's a faculty he's lost, a power of choice he's given up to something -- and this is the real gotcha of Critical Theory -- to something that he won't admit exists.

In seeking to become the masters the Western political elite has become the slave of ideas they can't even name, yet which oppress them like a dream weight, holding them down, making everything impossible. In an ending filled with irony, the Western Left that declared that nothing was out of bounds, which boasted it would achieve its goals by any means necessary finds itself in a strait-jacket of its own device, unable to lift its own feet, quivering in fear before third rate desert bandidos and a Russian thug.

Today the Western heritage is being stripped by a dying left to pay for a lost bet. Yet however hard it plunders, the Western left going down and the only question is how much else goes down with it. If the current crisis corresponds to the tremors that heralded the demise of the Soviet Union it may only be a few preference cascades from interesting times.

Army Chief of Staff Says Concealed Carry Wouldn't Have Stopped Fort Hood Shooting
[Free Beacon] Gen. Mark Milley, the Army chief of staff, came out strongly against the carrying of private guns on military bases as a security measure in the wake of shootings at Fort Hood, the Washington Navy Yard, and a recruiting station in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Milley, who assumed his current post in August 2015, was testifying alongside acting Secretary of the Army and former democratic congressman, Patrick Murphy before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Sen. Mike Lee (R., Utah) asked Milley about what the Army has done to better protect personnel and if the Army would consider letting soldiers carry their own weapons on bases.

"Such as recruiting stations, such as Chattanooga, the assessments are done by the local commanders ... and make a determination whether it was appropriate or not appropriate to arm them. So he delegated the authority in the assessment to the commanders, which is appropriate. Commanders should make those decisions because one size won’t fit all," Milley said.

#4  Like so much of the PC language of the left, you need to apply reason beyond implied conclusion. It is entirely possible that even in a context where the perpetrator assumed some in the audience would be armed, the attack might begin anyway. Hence the Generals statement has some validity. What is not stated but reason dictates, is that far fewer would die when the terrorist opened fire and was immediately put down by numerous armed citizens. Concealed carry will reduce the likelihood of mass casualties and ensure prompt justice is delivered. It's not all or nothing but dramatic reduction of effect, just like the wall on the border. Isn't a 90% reduction better than nothing?

Norwegian politician feels guilty that the Somali asylum seeker who raped him was deported
[Mail] Karsten Nordal Hauken, from Ås, Akershus, was raped in his home and the perpetrator was subsequently caught and jailed for 4.5 years.

However, when Nordal Hauken found out that the man was to be deported back to Somalia after serving his time, he reveals he felt guilt that the man would possibly face hardship in his old country.

Nordal Hauken, who describes himself as a 'young Socialist Left Party member, feminist and anti-racist', was attacked in his own home.

The politician reveals that he struggled to come to terms with being a heterosexual male rape victim, and subsequently self-medicated with alcohol and cannabis.

'I am a heterosexual man who was raped by a Somalian asylum seeker,' Nordal Hauken writes for NRK.

'My life fell into ruin, but now I feel guilty about him being sent out of the country.'

He reveals how he was called up by the prison shortly before the perpetrator was to be deported to Somalia, having served 4.5 years in prison for the rape.

'I felt relief and happiness that he would be gone forever. I felt like the Norwegian State had taken responsibility to carry out the ultimate revenge, like an angry father confronting it's child's attacker.

'But I also had a strong feeling of guilt and responsibility. I was the reason that he would not be in Norway anymore, but rather sent to a dark uncertain future in Somalia

Joan Baez Endorses Bernie Sanders: '€˜He Has Won My Heart'
[Breitbart] "Bernie has won my heart," Baez, 75, wrote. "I joyfully and wholeheartedly endorse Bernie Sanders to be the nominee for the Democratic Party in the 2016 Presidential Election."

She explained that this is the second time she has endorsed a presidential candidate; the first time, she publicly backed the "master of the spoken word," Barack Obama. Baez said that "as a daughter of Quakers I pledged my allegiance not to a flag or a nation state but to humankind, the two often having little to do with each other."

She said a great incentive for her decision to endorse Sanders was due to his support for causes she has been personally involved with for decades.

UN: IDF has razed more Palestinian structures this year than all of 2015
The civil administration demolished more Palestinian structures in Area C of the West Bank over three months in 2016 than it did in all of the previous year, the UN Office for the Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs said on Friday.

"Thus far in 2016, the Israeli authorities have demolished 539 structures in Palestinian communities in Area C of the West Bank, compared to a total of 453 in Area C in all of 2015," it said.

The Civil Administration for Judea and Samaria says it removes Palestinian and Beduin structures that were built illegally without permits.

Israel sees 26% drop in Palestinian terrorist attacks in March
[IsraelTimes] Figure of 123 incidents is lowest since last July; only fatality was US visitor Taylor Force; total does not include 3 Israelis killed in Istanbul terror

The number of terrorist attacks carried out in Israeli-controlled areas in March decreased by 26 percent over February, making last month’s tally of 123 incidents the lowest recorded since July.

The only fatality among victims of March attacks inside Israel was US citizen Taylor Force, a Vanderbilt University student, who was killed in a stabbing attack on March 8 in Jaffa. That event also accounted for nine of the 26 victims maimed in terrorist attacks last month in Israel, according to data published earlier this week by the Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency.

Several Paleostinians were killed last month, most of them while carrying out attacks.

Paleostinian attacks in February resulted in the death of three victims and the wounding of 11 -- a decrease from the slaying of five victims in January, when 28 were maimed.

The figure for March is the lowest monthly total recorded since last July, when 103 attacks were observed.

The tally includes neither the three Israeli victims of a March 19 suicide kaboom in Istanbul nor the two Israelis maimed in the March 22 kaboom at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport.

In Israel and the West Bank, attacks began increasing in August, when 171 of them were documented, and rose sharply in September and October, with 223 and 620 attacks recorded in those months respectively. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in October called the escalation "a terror wave," whereas many in the Israeli and Paleostinian media dubbed it "the third intifada," or "the knife intifada."

But the overall number of attacks decreased to 326 in November, 246 in December, 169 in January and 155 in February.

Of the incidents recorded in March, only six were stabbing attacks. Another 92 involved Molotov cocktails and nine featured explosive charges along Israel’s fence with the Gazoo Strip.

group fighters and eight non-combatants were killed in air strikes Sunday on Syria's Raqa, the de facto capital of the jihadist movement, a monitor said.

It was unclear whether the raids were carried out by Syrian, Russian or U.S.-led coalition warplanes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"At least 24 IS members, among them three commanders, as well as eight non-combatants were killed in air strikes," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

"We do not know whether the warplanes were from the U.S.-led coalition, the Syrian regime or Russia," he added.

Europe
Requests for asylum in Germany drop 66% in March — minister
[IsraelTimes] About 20,000 applications received last month, compared to 120,000 in January

The number of new asylum applications in Germany, Europe’s top destination for refugees last year, dropped 66 percent in March to about 20,000, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Friday.

"In December 2015, it was 120,000 people, in January 90,000, in February 60,000 and in March 20,000," he said, weeks after a string of Balkan countries closed their borders to refugees, halting the mass influx.

Germany last year took in more than one million refugees and migrants colonists, with the flow accelerating after Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
in September suspended normal EU asylum rules to grant people fleeing the Syrian war safe haven.

The mass influx sparked a backlash in Germany -- which has since reintroduced temporary border controls and taken other steps to reduce numbers -- and in eastern Europe, where a string of Balkan countries in early March shut their borders to refugees flocking in from Greece.

De Maiziere also said that an EU-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
agreement to stop refugees crossing by boat to EU member Greece had "got off to a good start."

The March 18 accord sets out measures for reducing Europe’s worst migration crisis since World War II, including the shipping back to Turkish territory of migrants colonists who land on the Greek islands. In return, Turkey is allowed to fly batches of Syrian asylum seekers straight to EU member countries and is slated to receive benefits including visa-free travel for its citizens to Europe.

"The number of asylum seekers who have come to us to request asylum and refugee status fell markedly in the first quarter," De Maiziere said.

The numbers for January-March were down to 170,000 compared to over 500,000 for October-December 2015, he said, citing data from the government’s EASY initial registration system. But he warned that "despite the positive development, it is too early to give a prediction for the full year."

"We don’t know... whether alternative routes will emerge, especially Libya-Italia, and how Italia would respond," the minister cautioned.

GWADAR: Six members of a family were shot dead in a house in Proom area of Panjgur district on Saturday.

According to officials, the victims were identified as Muhammad Younus, Naeem Jan, Muhammad Ilyas, Muhammad Nawaz, Muhammad Amin and Amina.

According to police, about 20 attackers broke into the house of Muhammad Younus in Pullabad Bazaar area early in the morning, when the family’s members were sleeping, and opened indiscriminate fire, killing six people.

A man who took two twins as brides,
Just six years old, as per the Book
(too young to f---, but could they cook!).
From prior union, triplets three
(their mother he divorced, you see):
These three, coincidentally,
Were also six, the same as he.
What doth propel the little tyke?
May Allah tell thee, if he like.

US, India look into co-production of fighter aircraft
A team from the US Department of Defense is holding negotiations in India on potential co-production of fighter jets, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said on Friday, according to Sputnik.
This is going to curl some slippers in Islamabad...
"Members of my team... right now, as we are here in New York, in India [are] looking at the potential co-production of fighter aircraft," Carter stated at the Council on Foreign Relations.

India has recently signed a number defense deals with the United States, but Russia still providing about 70 percent of India's weapons, according to the US-based geopolitical intelligence firm Stratfor. RHowever, several deals between India and Russia have recently stalled, including an attempt to co-produce a multi-role transport aircraft and supply 100 Kamov-226T light helicopters to New Delhi.

In January, an independent Russia-based project scrutinizing the global arms market, Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade, said that Russia will retain its share of Indian arms market despite US advances.
If you really want to upset both Pakistan and China, set up a co-production agreement for some Lawn Darts F18E or F16V models. The U.S. side earns royalties and profits, the Indians learn how to build a 4.5 generation fighter. Win-win, except for the bad guys in the region...

#4  ...India is quite capable of building F-16s - but the standards for building -35s might be a bit beyond them yet. On top of that, their maintenance standards are occasionally iffy - they have some very, very good people but it's not unknown for them to say, "We know better -", and then when things don't work, blame it on the machinery and/or the designers thereof.

Somalia executes two for killing female journalist
A military tribunal in Somalia executed two Al shabaab members convicted of murdering Hinda Hajji Mohamed, a female journalist killed in car bomb attack in Mogadishu in Dec 3, 2015.

Abdirisack Mohamed Barow, 28, and Hassan Nur Ali, 37, were executed by firing squad at school Polozio in Mogadishu on Saturday morning, according to a court judge.

The executed confessed role in concealing an explosive device under the seat of a car that killed Hinda Hajj Mohamed. She was assassinated for working the state media. Hinda Hajji was the widow of Liban Ali Nur, an editor at Somali National TV who had been killed in bomb and gun attack at a cafe in Somali capital, Mogadishu in the end of 2012 by Al shabaab.

Somalia’s military court has previously executed soldiers charged with murder and convicted Al Shabaab members.

Shaboob splinter group pledges allegiance to ISIL
A new terrorist group has pledged allegiance to Isis as it continues to expand its presence in East Africa. A group calling itself “Jahba East Africa” announced its alliance on Thursday, hailing a “new era” in the region.

In a statement, terrorists militants gave bayah (an oath of allegiance) to Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and recognised him as the “rightful Khalifa (leader) of all Muslims”.

The terrorist group’s name is previously unknown but there were hints in the statement that its terrorist supporters may previously have been part offal ofal-Shabaab.

Jahba East Africa criticised the group, which is linked to al-Qaedaand controls swathes of Somalia, as well as launching attacks in Kenya and other countries in the region.

“We in Jahba East Africa are advising all East Africans to leave al-Shabaab and their sponsor groups, like Al-Muhajiroun, Al-Hijra and Ansar Islam,” the statement said. “Like Al-Shabaab the sponsor groups have not understood the binding obligation of the Khalifah (caliphate).

“We are telling the terrorists mujahideen in East Africa that al-Shabaab has now become a psychological and physical prison.

“To pledge bayah to Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is freedom for the terrorists mujahideen in East Africa and opportunity to wage terrorism jihad according to the Sunnah against the enemies of Allah.”

A spokesperson said the group was “newly created” and comprised of terrorists militants fighting in Somalia, including Kenyans, Tanzanians and Ugandans. He said terrorists militants had been detained for pledging allegiance to Isis, adding that the statement was “on behalf all the East Africans in al-Shabaab and those terrorists that seek to open new up fronts in East Africa”.

There have been rumours of internal disputes between terrorist supporters of Isis and al-Qaeda within al-Shabaab for years, culminating in the reported creation of a pro-Islamic State faction.

Pressure to switch allegiance from al-Qaeda grew when Nigerian terrorists insurgents Boko Haram joined Isis in March last year and released a message urging its fellow sub-Saharan jihadists to do the same.

Isis terrorist leaders are understood to have approached al-Shabaab terrorist leaders themselves to make an alliance and released a series of propaganda videos calling for the creation of “Wilayat Somalia” – Somalia province. A memo was reportedly circulated among al-Shabaab terrorists fighters in September saying that its allegiance to al-Qaeda would not change and warning of punishments under Islamic law for any dissenters.

The move to silence pro-Isis terrorists elements appears to have failed. In a newly-created Twitter account, Jahba East Africa were calling on jihadists to join them on Friday, adding: “A new era will come to East Africa soon InshaAllah (God willing).”

Isis uses pledges of allegiance by existing terrorist and insurgent groups to establish franchises around the world. Libya’s Shura Council of Islamic Youth, for example, became Wilayat Barqa, while Egyptian jihadists Ansar Bait al-Maqdis were rebranded as Wilayat Sinai.

Terrorists Groups in Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, West Africa, Algeria and Gaza have also declared their allegiance to become part of the “global caliphate”.

California Labor Union That Fought for $15 Minimum Wage Now Wants an Exemption
[DAILYSIGNAL] The labor union that led the charge for a $15 minimum wage hike in cities across Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, is now moving to secure an exemption for employers under union contracts.

The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor buried the exemption on the eighth page of its 12-page proposal for the Santa Monica City Council to review Tuesday while deciding whether to follow Los Angeles and increase the minimum wage.

The loophole would allow employers with collective bargaining agreements to sidestep the wage hike and pay their union members below the proposed $15-per-hour minimum wage.

James Sherk, a research fellow in labor economics at The Heritage Foundation, said the exemption is a union attempt to encourage businesses to unionize by making themselves the only low-wage option as union membership continues to drop off.

"This proposal would force any worker in Santa Monica whose labor is worth less than $15 an hour to purchase union representation in order to hold a job," Sherk said. "Unions should not be able to selectively exempt themselves from the harmful consequences of the minimum wage hikes they lobby for."

The move in Santa Monica is not the federation of labor’s first attempt to compound a collective bargaining exemption into a minimum wage increase.

The federation received an outpouring of criticism when it attempted to push the same carve-out for unionized employers after Los Angeles decided to increase its minimum wage from $9 to $15.

"This is hypocrisy at its worst," the Los Angeles Times wrote in a blistering editorial. "It plays into the cynical view that the federation is more interested in unionizing companies and boosting its rolls of dues-paying members than in helping poor workers."

[AA.TR] The Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
will probably be deployed to western Syria to counter ISIS if ongoing conflicts around it get resolved, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said.

In remarks made during an exclusive interview to A Haber television channel Saturday, Cavusoglu said: "If ongoing armed conflicts that are taking place around western Syria get resolved, the Free Syrian Army will be shifted to western side to combat ISIS."

He also reiterated The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s resistance to the YPG, an armed wing of the Syrian terrorist group PYD.

Highlighting that Turkey's concerns over the YPG are well known to the U.S., he added: "During my latest official visit to the U.S. along with our President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan, we stated Turkey’s position on that issue clearly."

He also said that the Turkish army will not enter Syria.

"Turkey will support from air and land. We have our opportunities in this way. So, we will clear the region from ISIS," he said.

He said that the Manbij pocket, a 60-mile (98-kilometer) stretch along Turkey’s southern border with Syria, should be rebuilt and cleaned as a security zone for Syrians.

The Manbij pocket is a "red line" of demarcation for Turkey, which has pledged to prevent any breach of the western front by the PYD.

Turkey recently concentrated artillery fire in that area to help opposition groups fight ISIS, which authorities said killed at least 200 hard boys.

Turkey recognizes the PKK, its Syrian affiliate the PYD and the YPG as terrorist groups. But the U.S. lists only the PKK as a terrorist group.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
ISIS executes 3 in Manbij
[ARA News] ERBIL – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) executed three civilians in the city of Manbij in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, local sources reported on Saturday.

In the meantime, the radical group imposed night curfew in the city along with strict security measures, according to activists.

Speaking to ARA News on the phone, media activist Nasser Taljbini said that ISIS extremists have executed three civilians in the city of Manbij, on charges of spying for the anti-ISIS coalition forces.

“The three victims were executed by firing squad in the Manbij main square downtown, in front of dozens of people,” the source reported.

The ISIS-led Sharia Court in Manbij threatened to execute anyone who violates the group’s rules in the areas under its control.

Over the past two years, ISIS has publicly executed hundreds of civilians, activists, and journalists on various charges in the city of Manbij in northern Aleppo.

“Stepping up its patrols across the city, ISIS imposed a night curfew starting at 20:00 PM until 7:00 AM,” Taljbini reported, pointing out the group has been replacing its security members of the Hisba police forces from time to time.

Local sources in Manbij confirmed that the city has been under blockade from several directions since months, especially after the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have recently reported gains in the eastern suburbs of the city.

The SDF forces include the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) along with Arab and Christian groups. Backed by the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF alliance is mainly focused on fighting ISIS, al-Qaeda and other Islamist groups in northern Syria.

Moreover, a new civilian council was set up for Manbij city last month after a meeting in the town of Serrin in northern Syria, aiming at facilitating eliminating ISIS from the region.

The formation of this council shows the willingness of the Kurdish-led SDF to retake the city of Manbij from ISIS, and put an end to the barbaric acts committed by the group against civilians since nearly two years, according to analysts.

We only started to pull out of Germany in the 1990s, nearly half a century after we conquered the Nazis, and have not yet completed that pullout two decades later. Ditto Japan, I think, though I've not paid as much attention to the situation there. Without that multi-generation commitment, which the author refers to as dead enders -- incorrectly conflating those who supported the Iraq invasion with the Libya bombing, in my opinion -- the original overthrow has been transmuted into a different kind of evil. An evil we could deal with speedily, were our military freed to do so -- killing them all tends to be a persuasive argument for those on the sidelines.

The trio were found in an open area north of the West Bank city of Ramallah by a joint force of Paleostinian police and the Paleostinian Internal Security service, according to Paleostinian sources who spoke to The Times of Israel.

They had a large quantity of weapons with them, including several hand grenades and a "Carl Gustav" sub-machine gun, and it is believed they were planning an attack, the sources said.

The three were taken for interrogation. According to the Paleostinian sources, they are believed to be members of terror group Hamas.

Concerns regarding the three grew on Thursday after the cellphones and ID cards of two of the youths were found near Ramallah, according to Bethlehem Radio.

Paleostinian police notified the families of Basel Mahmoud Ala’raj of al-Walaja, near Jerusalem, Mohammed Abdullah Harb of Jenin, and Haytham Sayaj, of Hebron, of the find.

The families said that they had no word about the whereabouts of the three.

This Week in Books - April 10, 2016
Ghost Soldiers
The Epic Account of World War II's Greatest Rescue Mission
Hampton Sides
Anchor, 2002

This is another book I came across in the audio section. Sure, why not? (Note: I note every audio book I started with, but then I purchased the book, preferably hardback.)

Often I have remarked, "If they made this story into a movie, nobody would believe it." In this case, it was: The Great Raid

The movie, I enjoyed it, if that is the right word. However, I could not have appreciated the movie without first knowing Mr. Sides' work. Like Lord of the Rings, the movie is enthralling but without meaning if you have not been witness to the story. It is foremost an account of the survivors of Bataan, or more specifically, the survivors of the survivors of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. (Page 8)

One hundred and fifty slaves stood on a tarmac 2,200 meters long and 210 meters wide, straining with shovels and pickaxes and rakes. Ever since the air raids started two months earlier, Lieutenant Sato, the one they called "the Buzzard," had ordered them out each morning to fill the bomb pits, to make the runway usable again. This morning had been no different. The men had risen at dawn and eaten a breakfast of weevily rice, then climbed aboard the trucks for the short ride to the airstrip. As usual, they worked all morning and took a break for lunch around noon. But now the Buzzard said no lunch would be served on the strip, that instead the food would be prepared back at the barracks. The men were puzzled, because they'd never eaten lunch at their barracks before, not on a workday. It didn't make sense to drive back now, for they still had considerable repair work to do. Sato offered no explanation.

Foremost, it is an account of the survivors. As always, it is a personal account of an individual in extraordinary circumstances. (Page 49)

Thomas was a loud, friendly giant of a man, a beaming six-foot-four strawberry blond from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he'd been a star end on the Godwin High School football team. He'd had a difficult upbringing, even in comparison to the hard-luck stories typically found in the Bataan army. His father left his mother when he was a baby, his young brother had lost an arm in a streetcar accident and then had died of scarlet fever, and during the depths of the Depression his family had sunk into a poverty so extreme that after a series of moves and a stream of bad men constantly coming through the house, Thomas struck out on his own. His mother loved him dearly, but couldn't provide for him. Thomas spent his last two years of high school camping out of a rattletrap car on Buck Creek, living off the meager proceeds of his paper route and his summer wages from tending lettuce in the region's famously rich muck gardens. He had wanted to go to college but he couldn't afford it, so he joined the Army, which in comparison to his life in Grand Rapids seemed a radiant existence, holding out the promise of good wages ($21 a month) and three hot meals a day.

The actions taken by Mucci's Rangers are well accounted for, and an acknowledgment to the Philippine resistance is acknowledged. (Page 75)

Joson (ho-SOHN) was a short, generous-spirited man in his mid-thirties, bright but of limited education. He was a natural politician with a knack of gentle persuasion and a broad smile full of good teeth. Major Lapham, the American guerrilla leader, had always considered Joson one of his most capable officers. Joson couldn't count the run-ins he'd had with the Japanese over the past three years - skirmishes and ambushes and moonlight raids. Joson thrilled to the idea of attacking Cabanatuan. His runners had brought him the news last night. He and his lieutenants had gone out into the countryside, canvassing the surrounding barrios to round up as many able-bodied men as possible. Now here they were mustered and ready to join the mission.

Mr. Sides' work is detailed, but this passage really struck me, and if you have seen the movie, spot the difference. (Page 267)

A few minutes later an airplane shot across the sky. It seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, as though a trapdoor had opened in the firmament. As the aircraft streaked low over the camp, Thomas caught a momentary glimpse of the twin tailed contraption. It was black, futuristic, sleeker than any plane Thomas had seen before. He observed that the guards up in the tower were apoplectic, hurling themselves upon the floorboards.

The plane flew exceedingly low, low enough so that Abie Abraham thought he could "easily hit it with a rock." All about the camp, the prisoners stared up in awe, wondering what the strange ship had in mind for them. John Cook thought the aircraft looked like "Buck Rogers come to life." The plane looked so different from anything else they'd seen at that first they thought it was German, or possibly Russian. Other prisoners described it as "a black barn swallow," "a War of the Worlds rocket," and an "angel of death." To the men of Cabanatuan, the plane, whatever it was, seemed a powerful, almost eerie emblem of how far American technology had evolved in the three years of their captivity. Mechanically, logistically, conceptually, this was a different Army. On Bataan, they'd starved in their shallow metal helmets fighting old-fashioned pitched battles with dud shells and rusty artillery Thirty-odd months later, they had only to gaze upon this sci-fi lozenge streaking through the clouds at 300 miles per hour to understand that everything, the whole social and industrial universe back home, had changed. It was as though they were looking at a new country, a new era.

My best guess is a P-61 Black Widow.

China-Japan-Koreas
Why an unprecedented mass defection could be a sign of instability in North Korea
Josh Stanton explains why sanctions really just might work against North Korea. Key points:
1. Sanctions are undoing the regime’s financial bindings;

2. The regime is incapable of duct-taping those bindings together with resources from other state organs, possibly because those organs are functioning as semi-independent and competing feifdoms;

3. If the financial bindings come undone, loyalty and ideology aren’t enough to hold people;

4. At least some members of the core class — indeed, some of its most visible members — are disgruntled;

5. Disgruntled members of the core class are willing to share and conspire about their disgruntlement with each other, including the guy whose job it was to “manage” them, and act on it;

6. The South Korean government is willing to help North Koreans act on their disgruntlement; and

7. The South Korean government is willing to talk about all of this publicly, and thus inflict severe wounds to the regime’s morale, and possibly encourage other defections.

#1  Here are some interesting facts about exports and imports of NORK:

North Korea is the 126th largest export economy in the world. In 2013, North Korea exported $3.28B and imported $4.34B, resulting in a negative trade balance of $1.06B.

The top exports of North Korea are Coal Briquettes ($1.25B), Iron Ore ($258M), Non-Knit Men's Coats ($131M), Non-Knit Women's Coats ($128M) and Refined Petroleum ($125M), using the 1992 revision of the HS (Harmonized System) classification. Its top imports are Crude Petroleum ($598M), Refined Petroleum ($201M), Delivery Trucks ($144M), Synthetic Filament Yarn Woven Fabric ($136M) and Rubber ($87.8M).

The top export destinations of North Korea are China ($2.72B), the Netherlands ($120M), Brazil ($68.2M), Pakistan ($41.4M) and India ($31.6M). The top import origins are China ($3.62B), India ($238M), Russia ($103M), Thailand ($99M) and Singapore ($59.3M).

These figures are from the OEC WEBSITE.

The Netherlands as an importer is disturbing, but not really surprising. Norks are a big exporter of coal briquettes and iron ore to China. Without that big chunk of trade, the NORKS would be SOL.

Afghanistan
4 young suicide bombers arrested in Kunduz province of Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four young jacket wallahs were arrested by the Afghan National Security Forces in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan before they manage to carry out attacks.

According to the local security officials, the young bombers were looking to carry out suicide kabooms in different parts of Kunduz province and were arrested by intelligence operatives.

Provincial governor’s front man Abdul Wasih Basil said the detained individuals are originally residents of central Ghor province of Afghanistan.

In the meantime, provincial governor Asadullah Omar Khel told news hounds that the young men were trained in a Madrasa in Qarabagh district of Kabul

He said the suicide bombers were encouraged by Madrasa teacher to carry out attacks against the government of Afghanistan.

The Afghan children have regularly been recruited by the hard boy groups, the Taliban and the Haqqani network for the terrorist related activities, including suicide attacks.

Madrasas are described as the main recruitment source for the hard boy groups as poor families in Pakistain and Afghanistan send their sons to such madrassas for free education and lodging.

Earlier, a 12-year-old child assigned for a suicide mission surrendered himself to the security forces in the eastern Nangarhar

Istanbul police seize guns at anti-drug association linked to ISIL
Istanbul police on April 8 seized seven shotguns and 16 handguns at a youth association which is suspected to have links with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Police raided the Şehremini Youth and anti-Drug Association in the Fatih district and the homes of its founders upon an anonymous tip that guns were stashed in the association’s building. While no illegal materials were found in the house raids, seven shotguns, 16 handguns, 21 charger clips and 110 bullets were found in a stash hidden between two walls.

The six suspects detained during the operations are accused of selling arms over the Internet. The police said all suspects had criminal records, and an association founder, identified only by his initials M.İ., had been detained multiple times earlier on charges of drug, theft and resisting the police. It was also found out that M.İ. and another suspect had set up social media accounts under names “Ebu Zer" and "Ebu Katade," through which they shared messages promoting ISIL.

The arms trade was also made through those social media accounts, the police said.

The police are now investigation in detail the ties between the association and the jihadist group, which killed at least 150 people in four suicide attacks in Turkey since last July.

The source reported for IraqiNews.com, “Today the international coalition aircraft targeted two headquarters belonging to ISIS in the villages of al-Haj Ali and al-Mahana in Makhmur District (80 km south of Mosul), killing 25 ISIS members.”

The source, who asked to remain anonymous, added, “The aerial bombing also resulted in the complete destruction of the two headquarters.”

ISIS top security chief killed in Makhmour, Iraqi sources

[Rudaw] A senior ISIS militant, known as Abu Aisha, was killed by the Iraqi forces in Kharabardan village near the town of Makhmour, 68km south of Erbil, according to an announcement from the Iraqi army on Saturday.

Fazil Badr, also known as Abu Aisha, was in charge of the security affairs for the group. He was reportedly trying to target Iraqi soldiers in the town.

Kharabardan along with two other villages were recaptured by the local forces over the past weeks but were exposed to heavy ISIS shelling Thursday night.

Makhmour area has been widely patrolled by the Peshmarga forces fighting off ISIS militants in the neighboring Nineveh Plains since the radical group took over Mosul city in June 2014.

The Iraqi army launched its long-anticipated battle for Mosul in Makhmour earlier this month. The US Marines also set up a firebase near the town to provide artillery support for the Iraqi army.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran to build nine nuke plants by 2025
In accordance with the 20-year perspective document, atomic energy should account for 10 percent of Iran's electricity production, which means nine more power plants are needed by then, said Behrooz Kamalvandi, spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. He said Iran is expected to turn into an exporter of engineering services for power plant building in 30 years, Mehr news agency reported April 9.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai in January said Iran was planning to start the construction of the Bushehr-2 nuclear power plant in March.

In November 2014, Tehran and Moscow struck a deal to build eight more nuclear power plants in Iran. Russia has already built a power plant in Bushehr. The agreement for Bushehr nuclear power plant was finalized in 1995, but the project was delayed several times due to a number of technical and financial issues.

Iran's only nuclear power plant - Bushehr, which was inaugurated in September of 2013, has a capacity of producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity.
And an undisclosed amount of plutonium...

Ex-Argentine President Fernandez charged with money laundering: media
BUENOS AIRES -- Cristina Fernandez, who stepped down as president of Argentina in December after eight years in office, has been charged by a prosecutor with money laundering, local media reported on Saturday.
Bwha-ha-ha...
The decision follows testimony on Friday by businessman Leonardo Farina, who in a plea bargain implicated Fernandez and her late husband and former President Nestor Kirchner in a case related to money laundering and embezzling funds earmarked for public works.

Julio De Vido, a longtime Fernandez and Kirchner ally and former minister, was also charged, local newspapers Clarin and La Nacion reported, citing judicial sources.

Last Tuesday, another Fernandez ally, businessman Lazaro Baez, was arrested for questioning as part of the same investigation.

Fernandez, 63, is due to answer questions in court on Wednesday over a separate probe into the sale of U.S. dollar futures contracts at below-market rates by the central bank during her administration.

Fernandez, a leftist leader from the Peronist party, was barred constitutionally from seeking a third consecutive term. Opposition candidate Mauricio Macri won the November election, ending more than a decade of Peronist rule.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Anglican Leader Says DNA Tests Have Revealed His Real Father
[BLOOMBERG] The archbishop of Canterbury says DNA tests have identified his real father, but the revelation hasn't shaken his sense of identity.
Ooh! Ooh! I seen dis movie!
Earlier this month, DNA analysis of Archbishop Justin Welby's mouth swabs determined that his father was not whisky salesman Gavin Welby but civil servant Sir Anthony Montague Browne. Browne and Welby's mother, Jane Williams, both worked as aides to Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
"Yes, Sir Anthony! YES! I am your... son!"
"By Gad! Sonny! Is it... Is it you?"
"Yes, Father! It is I!"

Saturday's announcement from Welby, leader of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion, followed an investigation by the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
"[Sob!] I can't marry Geraldine, even if I am the Archbishop of Canterbury, because my father was a whisky salesman!"
Welby said: "I find who I am in Jesus Christ, not in genetics, and my identity in him never changes."
"But Sir Anthony's leaving you a fortune in secret offshore holdings!"
"Well, that will help, too, of course..."

Williams issued her own statement confirming a drunken one-night stand with Browne shortly before her 1955 marriage to Welby.
"[Hic!] Shay, lady! Y'wanna buy some whish... whish... whishky?"
"[Hic!] Sure! C'mon in!"

on Friday police in the southern state of Bavaria said that questioning of the men and searches of their residential premises had netted no evidence to back up the suspicion.

The men were released on Friday shortly before noon, said the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation.

Since the November 13 attacks in Gay Paree that killed 130 people, German authorities have repeatedly said they believe Germany also faces the threat of jihadist attacks.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere on Friday defended the police, saying that it was prudent, "if in doubt, to act earlier rather than too late".

According to a statement released by the Office of the Former President, the drone strike by US forces in Barmal district left a number of civilians dead.

The statement further added that the former President strongly condemns the strike by US forces, calling the raid as irresponsible.

Karzai warned that such Arclight airstrikes will have negative consequences as the civilian deaths will spark furor among Afghans against the foreign forces.

According to the local officials, at least 17 people were killed in two separate Arclight airstrikes targeting the Talibs.

the provincial council officials said the victims also included ordinary civilians who bit the dust in the Arclight airstrikes.

Erdogan spokesman calls for new anti-Daesh strategy
[AA.TR] Turkish presidential front man Ibrahim Kalin has called for a new approach in the anti-ISIS strategy, which would enable Muslim and Western countries to work together.

Addressing the conference titled "Rethinking Violent Extremism in the MENA Region" in Istanbul Saturday, Kalin said: "The current strategy, which has focused primarily on Arclight airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq, has failed to stop the terrorist group from striking in Syria, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Europe and the U.S."

Kalin said the war in Syria feeds ISIS and other terrorist groups. "The longer we let this war continue, the deadlier ISIS terrorism will become. ISIS reached its current level of network and impact primarily because of the war in Syria and Iraq," he said.

According to Kalin, there are no good or bad terrorists.

"Regardless of ethnic, religious or political motives, terrorism is terrorism everywhere. It is neither logical nor moral to treat ISIS as a terrorist organization that struck in Gay Paree and Brussels, but not the PKK that struck in Ankara twice over the last two months," he said.

He highlighted that PKK terrorism could not be justified in the name of fighting against ISIS in Syria.

"As the recent Ankara and Istanbul attacks show, ISIS and the PKK, although coming from opposite ideological-political backgrounds, are united in their terrorism directed at Turkey," Kalin said.

ISIS has been linked to a number of other suicide kabooms in Turkey.

In addition to the Jan. 12 Sultanahmet blast that claimed the lives of 12 German tourists, the group also carried out the March 19 attack in Istanbul, which killed three Israelis and an Iranian.

Gaza’s only power plant shuts down over fuel tax dispute
[AA.TR] Gazoo’s only power plant went offline Saturday because the Strip’s Energy and Natural Resources Authority has been unable to pay a fuel tax imposed on it by the Paleostinian unity government.

"The power plant stopped operating because the Paleostinian unity government continues to impose a tax on the price of fuel," the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-run authority said in a statement.

Hamas has been demanding a fuel tax exemption for years, citing the deteriorating situation in the blockaded Gazoo Strip.

Since Hamas won the Paleostinian legislative polls in 2006, Israel has imposed a tight blockade on the Gazoo Strip, creating a difficult economic and humanitarian situation for many of the territory’s roughly 1.9 million inhabitants.

Syrian rebels capture 3 towns in southern Aleppo
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Islamist rebel groups conducted Saturday a major offensive on positions for the pro-regime forces and allied militias, killing and wounding dozens of soldiers in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, local and military sources reported.

Islamist rebels were able to capture several strategic locations after clashes with pro-Assad forces, according to local activists.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, rebel spokesman Mustafa Suleiman said that the Nusra Front [Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda], Jund al-Aqsa and Ahrar al-Sham factions launched a major attack on headquarters of the regime’s army in Aleppo’s southern suburbs.

“The rebels were able to take over the key towns of Bernah and Khalidiya after heavy battles with the Syrian army,” Suleiman stressed.

The spokesman pointed out that the rebel factions, after heavy battles with Assad’s forces, were able to destroy several guns [caliber 23], a machine gun 14.5 as well as a manned-vehicle after targeting them with thermal rockets.

Local sources confirmed that Islamist armed groups launched several missiles on locations held by the regime’s army within the town of Khan Toman. However, the pro-regime forces responded by targeting the town of al-Eis [held by rebels] and the areas around Khan Toman and al-Ahrash. No casualties reported.

The rebel groups have gained control of al-Eis town subsequent to the announcement of the battle for southern Aleppo. They were able to expel the pro-regime forces completely from the area, according to the spokesman.

Also, Syrian Islamist fighters have taken over several towns north of Aleppo three weeks ago, especially after the US-led coalition forces intensified airstrikes on the positions of the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) near the Turkish border. However, ISIS regained two towns after causing the rebels heavy losses in manpower and equipment.

Syrian rebels regain control of towns in Damascus province
[ARA News] HOMS ــ Subsequent to fierce battles with the radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS), Syrian rebel groups were able Saturday to regain control of several strategic locations from ISIS in the eastern Qalamoun in Syria’s province of Damascus, local sources reported.

Dozens of ISIS militants were killed during clashes with rebels in eastern Qalamoun on Saturday.

Speaking to ARA News in Damascus, local media activist Uday Mustafa confirmed that several opposition groups, mainly the so-called Usoud al-Sharqiya army, launched on Saturday a major attack on several ISIS-held positions in the eastern Qalamoun near Damascus.

“The rebels were able to regain control of the Sin and Badia Cement factories after fierce clashes with the terror group,” Mustafa said, pointing out that the rebel groups were able to destroy a tank in addition to two ISIS-manned cars loaded with machine guns [caliber 14.5].

The source stressed that the clashes led to ISIS withdrawal to the eastern regions.

“The opposition factions have launched another major attack on locations of the extremist group in the Safa station, during which dozens of fighters have been killed on both sides,” Mustafa told ARA News.

“Our battles with ISIS in eastern Qalamoun led to the death of dozens of [ISIS] terrorists, while some others fled toward the Syrian desert to the east,” Husam Shadi, a rebel fighter in Qalamoun, told ARA News.

“But, fighting is still ongoing in the region,” he reported.

At least 23 ISIS militants were killed during confrontations between the two sides, according to local activists.

The rebel groups view the Qalamoun as a base for launching operations against opponents around Damascus, and it also serves as a critical line of communication with their Sunni peers in Lebanon. Also, the region links Damascus to the regime’s Alawites enclaves on the coast.

The eastern Qalamoun areas of Damascus have been witnessing fierce fighting between several conflicting forces, including ISIS, opposition factions, and the pro-regime troops.

al-Qaeda executes 17 Yemeni soldiers
Suspected Al Qaeda militants in southern Yemen seized and executed 17 soldiers loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi on Saturday, local officials and residents said.

The soldiers were detained while travelling from the southern port of Aden to al-Mahra province in eastern Yemen via Ahwar, a city in Abyan province under Al Qaeda control.

The militants took them to a remote area and killed them by firing squad, the officials and residents said. They said 17 other captive soldiers were wounded in the incident and some managed to escape and get help from local tribal leaders.

Ansar al Sharia, an Al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen, later issued a statement denying responsibility for the attack and blamed a local armed fighter named Ali Aqeel.

“We entered Ahwar around two months ago to chase this corrupt individual and his gang,” the statement said.

The soldiers had been visiting family in Aden and were returning to their base in al-Mahra to draw their salaries, security sources said. They were not dressed in military uniform and were not riding in military vehicles.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has exploited the Yemeni war to expand areas under its control, seizing Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout province, last year and recruiting more followers.
Arab News adds:
Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), also known as Ansar Al-Sharia, in an online statement denied it was involved in the attack.

“We in Ansar Al-Sharia deny any connection to the murder incident that took place on Saturday morning in the Ahwar area,” it said, blaming a local tribal leader for the killings instead.

Meanwhile, in the region of Nahm, northeast of Sanaa, clashes on Saturday killed three loyalists and four rebel fighters, said another military source

Fresh fighting in Benghazi’s Ganfouda district
Heavy fighting in Benghazi was continuing this evening as the army launched a push into the tourist village at Ganfouda in the south of the city.

The attack which began early this morning was opened by an air raid.

Reports of army casualties are still coming in. Jalaa hospital has said that one soldier has died and 17 have been injured. It was not possible to check with the Benghazi Medical Centre to see if they had also received any dead and wounded.

This evening a large number of “technicals” and cars packed with soldiers was seen heading towards the fighting, evidently to reinforce army units, some of whom may have been rotated out of the line after the daytime battle.

After the army’s significant gains in the 22 February “Blood of the Martyrs” operation, the advance has petered out. What fighting that has taken place has been mostly around the still bitterly-contested Hawari cement factory.

Rumours persist that French DGSE special forces had been supporting the army on 22 February from a base at Benina Airport. Three days into the operation Saiqa special forces commander, Colonel Wanis Bukhamada denied that he had ever claimed that any French units were involved.

There was also another airstrike this evening on Sabri, close by the port, but no attempt by ground troops to advance into the district. Isolated Sabri, which armed force commander-in-chief General Khalifa Hafter has been vowing for months to take from IS and Ansar Al-Sharia fighters, continues to hold out. This is despite the fact that the army now has a clear field of fire over the beach which is the only supply route for the militants.

Now revealed: Belgian terror suspect found with ‘biological material’ during March 25th arrest
[IsraelTimes] A terror suspect tossed in the clink
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in Brussels three days after the attacks at the airport and the metro last month was reportedly carrying materials that could have been used to make a biological weapon.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal citing an internal Belgian police report, Abderrahmane Ameuroud, a 38-year-old Algerian national, was found with "a plastic bag containing three identity cards surrounded by excrement and animal testicles."

The police report said that on jihadist forums "if you mix a combination of excrement, of water and of animal meat for 10 days in a dark place, this can create a toxic reaction."

"In the case of unprotected contact with this substance, one can be infected by some virus or some bacteria provoking illness like typhoid, tetanus, colibacillosis, botulism, cholera or listeria," the police report read, as published by the Wall Street Journal.

The report advised those coming into contact with the material to wash their hands with chlorine.

"We have good reasons to believe that Islamic State

and some supporters of Islamic State are experimenting with biological weapons," Belgian police wrote.

According to the Journal, officials at first tried to downplay the findings.

Ameuroud was detained at a train stop in Brussels on March 25 in connection with a terror plot in La Belle France that authorities say was at an advanced stage.

US warns of 'credible threats' to tourist areas in Istanbul, Antalya
The United States embassy in Turkey on April 9 warned American citizens of "credible threats" to tourist areas in Istanbul and the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, a day after Israel warned of "imminent risks" of attacks.

"The U.S. Mission in Turkey would like to inform U.S. citizens that there are credible threats to tourist areas, in particular to public squares and docks in Istanbul and Antalya," read the emergency travel warning published on its official website.

On April 8, Israel reissued and accentuated a warning to its citizens to avoid Turkey over the "immediate risks" of attacks, weeks after three Israelis were killed in an Istanbul suicide bombing.

"Following a situational assessment, we are reiterating and sharpening the high level of threat in Turkey," the counter terrorism bureau said.

Its warning came hours after the Turkish foreign ministry announced "progress towards finalizing the agreement" on restoring ties with Israel, a day after both sides held talks in London.

"There are immediate risks of attacks being carried out in the country, and we stress the threat applies to all tourism sites in Turkey," Israel's counter terrorism bureau said in a statement.

It called on all Israelis to avoid visiting Turkey and urged Israeli tourists there to leave "as soon as possible," defining the threat as level 2 -- "concrete and high" -- the same as in its previous warning from March 28.

Three Israelis and an Iranian were killed and 39 people wounded when a man blew himself up on Istanbul’s Istiklal Avenue, a famous shopping street in the heart of Turkey's largest city, on March 19. Turkey said the bomber had links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and on April 5 Israel's defense ministry said he had most likely targeted the Israelis deliberately.

Southeast Asia
Attack suspects rounded up in southern Thailand
[The Nation] Three suspects were arrested yesterday on suspicion that they hijacked a pickup truck, stuffed it with explosives, and forced its owner to drive it into Yala town for a car-bomb attack.
The plot - thwarted by the victim and swift response by security forces on Tuesday - could have caused massive casualties.

Police and soldiers staged a pre-dawn raid yesterday to make the arrests. The suspects are Sanafee Jehteh, Marorfee Jehdeemae, and Reeduwan Tahay.

DNA from the pickup used in the foiled bomb plot have already nailed one of the suspects. Police are now interrogating the three in a effort to track down all of those involved. Witnesses said about ten men took part in hijacking the pickup.

Meanwhile in Narathiwat province, soldiers with the help of military dogs searched a mountainous area to hunt down militants who raided a hospital on March 13. Video footage and other evidence showed more than 50 men took part in that raid, aimed at providing a base for attacks on a nearby military base.

Yesterday, arrest warrants were issued for six more suspected raiders: Suedee Puteh, Yakee Wor-ngoi, Subaidee Safru, Ardue-anan Beuraheng, Abudulloh Johloh, and Abdulhaleng No. These latest arrest warrants bring the total number for this incident to eight.

Spain police find hidden weapons cache, IS flag
MADRID -- Police said on Saturday they had discovered a hidden weapons cache and a home-made Islamic State flag in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in Morocco, and are investigating a possible connection to Islamist terrorists militants.

The cache of four pistols, including an air gun modified to shoot live ammunition, two Scorpion sub-machine guns, ammunition and variety of knives, was found in perfect condition and buried on wasteland on Thursday, Spain's Interior Ministry said.

Spanish police have detained 15 people with suspected links to Islamic State terrorists militants so far this year and 102 people on the same charges last year after police stepped up security measures following terrorist attacks in Paris.

Ceuta and Melilla, Spain's other north African enclave, have been a focus of Spanish anti-terrorist militant investigations.

Overnight gunfire near Serraj’s Tripoli naval base HQ
An outbreak of heavy firing last night near the Mehari Radisson hotel, above the Bu Sitta naval base where the Presidential Council is staying was due to a “misunderstanding” the Rada Security Force explained today.

It said that the fighting had broken out between what it described as the 155 Brigade of the Libyan army and the 6th Brigade under control of Central Security. Rada explained on its social media site that its own members had intervened to stop the shooting. It did not say what the “misunderstanding” might have been.

Other reports suggest that there was a dispute between 155 Brigade members and armed men from the Zawiyat Addahmani district as to who should be carrying out a patrol of the naval base.

In any event, prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj was not at the base. He left yesterday for a private visit to London, where it is understood that he will have no official meetings.

There are no details of any casualties from last night’s exchanges which lasted for about ten minutes and involved firing in the air.

Somali pirates threaten to attack illegal fishing trawlers
Pirates who once ruled the seas off Somalia are little more than a memory but while they are forgotten, they are not gone.

The trial in Paris of seven men accused of killing a French sailor and kidnapping his wife in 2011 is a reminder of the terror. However, experts and former pirates alike say the scourge may return.

“There hasn’t been a serious attack on a commercial vessel in over two years,” said John Steed, Horn of Africa manager for the US-based non-profit Oceans Beyond Piracy. “But the guys haven’t gone and nothing’s changed on the ground.”

Anti-piracy patrols by international warships and armed guards aboard commercial vessels, which continue to chug fast and far past the Somali coast, have suppressed piracy, not stopped it.

The last wave began in 2005 and reached its peak six years later when Somali pirate gangs attacked 237 vessels and, at year’s end, held 11 ships and 216 hostages, earning on average more than $2 million for every ship ransomed. Back then, the total economic cost of Somali piracy was estimated at $6.9 billion.

Much of that cost was down to counter-piracy actions, including the deployment of warships, extra fuel burned by vessels racing through the pirate ranges and the hiring of private armed security teams aboard ships. These costly measures worked and Somali piracy dropped off dramatically so that by 2013, no commercial vessels were successfully boarded.

Now some pirates have turned to a new activity, fishing, and are finding themselves up against a new enemy: Foreign trawlers.

The anti-piracy navies have no mandate to stop illegal fishing and private guards have no interest in it, while Somalia, making an unsteady recovery from war, lacks a coastguard and a navy.
I can see a solution other than piracy right there...
“There’s now no risk to illegal trawlers which can fish at will,” said Steed.

Pirates turned fishermen grumble about the trawlers and have threatened to take up arms.

“We are fishermen but where is the fish?” asked Abdulahi Abas, a former pirate in the coastal town of Graced. “I joined the pirates because of those illegal fishing vessels and now we have left the piracy business, we cannot fish in our waters.”

Some trawlers have been attacked. Last year, Iranian fishing boat Siraj was hijacked while its partner vessel, Jaber, escaped after a gunfight with pirates.

On any given day, scores of foreign trawlers illegally pull fish out of Somalia’s territorial waters. Among the worst illegal fishing offenders are Iranian, Spanish and Taiwanese vessels.
Which is why you won't get an anti-illegal fishing mandate: Spain and her friends will stop such a measure in the U.N.
“Illegal fishing is giving pirates the excuse they had in the beginning,” said Steed, “It is just an excuse. These are criminals, whether they are kidnapping at sea or on land.”

Boko Haram demands '$50m ransom' for release of kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
is seeking a ransom of nearly £40m for the release of the 219 schoolgirls that it kidnapped from the Nigerian town of Chibok two years ago, sources close to the group have told The Sunday Telegraph.
Hadn't they said shortly after the kidnapping that they'd sold most of the girls as wives and concubines on the international market?
The terror sect is thought to have issued the demand during secret contacts with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has said he is willing to negotiate for the girls' freedom.

The group's leader, Abubakr Shekau, had previously demanded the release of placed in durance vile
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
comrades in exchange for the girls.

But a deal along those lines - brokered by the Red Thingy - fell through after Nigerian prison officials said that commanders on a list given to them by Boko Haram were not in their custody.

Details of the new ransom request emerged ahead of the second anniversary of the girls kidnapping on the night of April 14, 2014, when they were kidnapped by Boko Haram gunnies posing as soldiers.

Despite their case receiving global attention because of the celebrity-backed #bringbackourgirls campaign on social media, diplomats and sources close to the negotiations say they are no closer to knowing the girls' whereabouts.

The Nigerian military has made significant gains against Boko Haram in the last 18 months, raiding a number of the sect’s camps in Nigeria's vast Sambisa forest, and freeing at least 1,000 women and kiddies taken in other mass abductions.

Yet in none of the raids have any rescued prisoners or captured fighters been able to give any convincing accounts of meeting or seeing any of the Chibok girls.
Try Mali and Saudi Arabia.

How has Christianity become so popular in South Korea?

#1  The article discusses the how, but falls flat on the why. The Koreans seem to have a bit of the roboticness that you see in other social organisms, such as bees.

As a side note, I checked and found the percentage of Mormons among the population, whom you would expect to have a field day in such a place, was actually less than 2 one-hundredths of a percent. Early in the article someone says that Chiristiany is largely corrupt. I suspect some sort of persecution is going on.

#3  The article discusses the how, but falls flat on the why. The Koreans seem to have a bit of the roboticness that you see in other social organisms, such as bees.

The Koreans have been in the historical position of being caught between the two powers of Japan and China, and subject to invasions and occupations. Yet, they have retained a specific tribal/national identity (though the last round the Japanese tried their worst/best to wipe it out). One just has to walk down a Korean street to observe store signs both in Chinese and Hangul, along with the clear Roman letters TEL: followed by the Indo-arabic numbers. Asking among the people why this is, the usual reply was 'it works'. To them the display is simply a glyph.

The question that should have been asked was "what purpose does religion have to play in society". When you answer that, then the Korean reply 'it works' answers the title's question.

The Koreans, more than their neighbors China and Japan, appear to be quicker to adopt not just products or end items, but also the underlying processes and behaviors that leads to the end result without cultural or social inhibitions. It works. In this case the adaptation of the social function of religion in society to integrate Christian based norms and practices.

#4  Korea, traditionally, was a strongly feudal society, with everyone in their place. If one wanted to rebel against that, what with all of your neighbors, for hundreds of years, wanting to invade and make the whole country serfs in their system, one would look for an ethos that was against that.

Most Koreans who are Christians are Methodists. Considering the historical Methodist Church rather than the American mainline one, this shouldn't be surprising.

#5  ...When I was in Korea 32 years ago, Christianity was growing quickly. This should not be a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention.

Djibouti’s president, in power since 1999, reelected
But I think we all saw this coming...
Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh has been reelected for a fourth term, the country's Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed announced citing preliminary projections, Sputnik reported.

The announcement was made before all the Friday votes were in, The Business Standard said on Saturday.
What better time to announce the results?
Guelleh, 68, has been in power since 1999. He is the second president of Djibouti since the country gained independence from France in 1977. Some of Djibouti's opposition parties have decided to boycott the presidential election calling it a sham.

Djibouti borders on Somalia and is located on the Horn of Africa. The United States' only military base in Africa, Camp Lemonnier, is located in Djibouti.

Four Brussels suspects charged with terror offenses
[AA.TR] Mohammed Abrini, one of the suspects charged over last month’s Brussels attacks, has admitted his involvement, officials said Saturday.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office released a statement confirming that Abrini was the third man involved in the bombing of Zaventem Airport. He was pictured in CCTV footage walking alongside two bombers who later killed themselves in the attack and became known as "the man in the hat".

Abrini confessed to being at the scene of crime, the statement said, adding that he threw his explosive vest in a bin and sold his hat after the blasts.

He was among six men nabbed

on Friday over last month’s attacks. Four, including Abrini, have been charged with "participating in terrorist acts". They were identified by broadcaster VRT as Mohammed Abrini, Osama Krayem, Bilal El Mahkoukhi and Herve B.M.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office identified all the suspects apart from Abrini by their first name and the initials of their surname.

Abrini had also been wanted in connection with the attacks in Gay Paree that killed 130 people in November. The airport attack and another at a metro station left 32 dead.

Krayem has been identified as the second man involved in the Maalbeek metro station bombing, the prosecutor’s office said. He was filmed talking to jacket wallah Khalid El Bakraoui at Petillon metro station just before the blast and was also present when the bags that contained the airport bombs were purchased at a shop in Brussels.

El Makhoukhi and Herve B.M., who were detained with Krayem, are suspected of having assisted Abrini and Krayem. Last year, El Mahkoukhi was convicted over his involvement in Sharia4Belgium,
...a Belgian Salafist organization that has been funneling fighters to Al Nusra and Al Qaeda in the Maghreb for years...
an organization that recruited fighters for Death Eater groups in Syria and Iraq. He was sentenced to five years in prison - three suspended - and was released under condition of electronic monitoring in March.

The other two men that were arrested have been released.

The suspects are believed by officials to be part of a ISIS-backed network that carried out both the Brussels and Gay Paree attacks.

Also Saturday, armed police searched an apartment in Brussels’ Etterbeek district that police believe may have been used as a safe house.
Ynet adds that Herve B.M. is Rwandan, and from The Times of Israel:

on Saturday in the central district of Etterbeek.

The arrest took place after a police raid on a building that involved more than 50 officers, snipers and the bomb squad, according to NBC news. The building had been evacuated and roads to the apartment complex were closed off Saturday.

Belgium’s prosecutor’s office said Saturday that a sixth person had been arrested, but refused to give any further details ahead of an announcement due out later in the day.

34 suspected militants killed in Balochistan's Kalat district
QUETTA: Security forces on Saturday claimed to have killed 34 suspected militants, including a key commander in Balochistan’s Kalat district.

One security official was killed while two others sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.

“A key militant commander, Abdul Nabi Bangulzai, was also among the dead,” said Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti in a press conference.

The operation was launched by personnel of security forces and intelligence agencies, against elements involved in target killings and bombings in the Johan area of Kalat, added Bugti.

“Abdul Nabi was involved in the assassination of Balochistan High Court Justice Nawaz Marri in 2000,” stated the home minister.

Security forces also recovered a large amount of arms and ammunition from the militants, and Bugti added that those killed were also involved in attacking passengers in the Mastung area of the province.

The home minister, elaborated during the press conference that security forces have intensified their operations on the basis of intelligence received.

“There is no tolerance for terrorists,” said Bugti.

All the dead militants belonged to a proscribed outfit, which was active in the area and was involved in multiple terror attacks.

Militants have conducted attacks against security forces and national installations in Balochistan, which has been plagued by an insurgency and growing sectarian killings for more than a decade.

DSS Arrests Suspected Founding Member Of Boko Haram In Lokoja

, Mohammed Usman, in Lokoja, Kogi State.

According to the DSS, Mr Usman, widely known as Khalid Al-Barnawi, alias Kafuri, Naziru, Alhaji Yahaya, Mallam Dauda, Alhaji Tanimu, apprehended by this Service on April 1 in, while hiding under a false cover.

The Service said Mr Usman, whom it prefers to refer to as Al-Barnawi, was a founding member of the Jama’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid Da’wah Wa’l-Jihad (Boko Haram) and later the Amir of the break-away faction, Jama’at Ansarul Muslimim Fi Biladi Sudan (JAMBS).

A statement by the front man for the DSS, Tony Opuiyo, said "Khalid Al-Barnawi is a trained terrorist commander, who has been coordinating terrorist activities in Nigeria, while talent-spotting and recruiting vulnerable young and able Nigerians for terrorist training by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in North African States and the Middle-East".

The service said he was involved in many terrorist attacks in States of the Federation, including Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Sokoto and FCT-Abuja that resulted in the killing and maiming of innocent citizens of Nigeria.

"Al-Barnawi is also responsible for the bombing of the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
building in Abuja, on 26th August, 2011; the kidnapping of two European civil engineers in Kebbi State in May, 2011, and their subsequent murder in Sokoto State; the kidnap of a German engineer, Edgar Raupach in January, 2012, the kidnap and murder of seven expatriate staff of Setraco Construction Company at Jama’are, in Bauchi State in February, 2013, the attack of Nigerian troops at Okene in Kogi State, while on transit to Abuja for an official assignment," the DSS claimed in the statement.

It said the suspect would be charged after investigation, describing the arrest as a major milestone in the counter-terrorism fight of this Service.

The DSS reassured Nigerians that the Service in collaboration with other sister security agencies, would bring perpetrators of crime and their sponsors to justice.
