VZ: It Begins - Tanks and Troops. 4 Killed, 1200 Arrested
HT Insty
Police and National Guard killed four suspects Tuesday during a wide raid in Western Caracas that involved tanks and helicopters, as Venezuela also underwent the rare climate phenomenon known as a "solar halo."

"As has been the request of our people, we have deployed OLP New Phase in 4 areas of Caracas," tweeted Interior Minister Gustavo Gonzalez as the operation began unfolding. Local media said eight suspected criminals were killed during the operation, but Gonzalez spoke only of four killed when resisting police action. Some 400 vehicles were used during the operation, ranging from motorcycles to tanks and choppers.

The purpose of the raid, Gonzalez said was to "eradicate organized crime" and "the paramilitary." Venezuelan government officials frequently blame the country's high crime rate on right-wing paramilitary groups supposedly originated in Colombia and affiliated with the local anti-Maduro opposition, a charge the opposition has denied and the government failed to prove conclusively.

The homicide rate in Venezuela is surging again in 2016, the Prosecutor General's office warned in its first quarterly report of the year last week. Venezuela suffered 18,000 homicides in 2015 according to the Prosecutor General, but NGO's put that figure closer to 28,000 murders for last year.

Also during the operation, 1,131 suspects for different crimes were apprehended, the Interior and Justice Ministry said in a tweet. Seventeen cars, 19 motorcyles, 15 fire arms, all supposedly stolen, as well as unspecified amounts of illegal drugs were also seized during the operation, minister Gonzalez said.

HIGH CASUALTY RATE

State television said 3,200 security personnel were deployed in the operation, called "OLP" by the government, the Spanish language acronym of "Operations for the Liberation of the People." OLP's are a forceful, wide raid implemented on high crime areas of Venezuela that have been criticized for their high casualty rates, both for police and suspects.

Cops and guardsmen closed main roads leading into four sections of Western Caracas -- Cota 905, Coche, El Cementerio and El Valle -- Tuesday morning before the showdown. Afterwards, per OLP's established procedure, they went house-to-house seeking criminals -- but this time, cops brought more than just body armor.

TANKS IN THE PEACE ZONE

For the first time ever, tanks were deployed in one of Caracas' few "zonas de paz", or "peace zones" -- Cota 905.

Like the OLP itself, the "peace zones" are a divisive, highly controversial initiative: high-crime areas were police stopped patrolling three years ago, after talks with local gangs. Now the cops are back and in full force.

Dam at North Korea power plant partly collapsed, source says
A power plant Kim Jong Un touted during the Seventh Party Congress may be leaking at various points due to shoddy construction.

Mount Paektu power plants Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in Yanggang Province are experiencing problems due to a nationwide policy that stressed the importance of speed over safety checks, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
Whereas here in America we prioritize slow, plodding development over cost.
The construction took place hastily in order to meet a deadline ahead of the congress, which opened Friday and closed Monday.

Kim's call for a "70-day battle," a mass mobilization movement that required ordinary North Koreans to volunteer free labor, has not had the results the state had expected, according to an unnamed source who provided satellite images of the power station.
Really? Is it possible that Pudgy is as stupid as 0bean?
Images indicate a dam at the power station was showing cracks in several areas, and a part of the dam wall had collapsed.

The satellite images taken Sunday also showed a spillway had been built to drain surplus water from the reservoir and the hydroelectric power plants.

Last October, Kim had ordered the completion of Mount Paektu Hero Youth Power Station No. 3 by Aug. 28, or national youth day.

The state then held a "completion" ceremony for the power station on April 28, and Kim recently told the congress the power station had been "built well," thanks to the "indomitable spirit" of young workers.
But I thought Pudgy had X-ray vision . . . .
But a source on the issue said the construction took place at subzero temperatures, and the pouring of concrete took place at -22 degrees Fahrenheit.
That sounds a bit on the chilly side to me. But I'm not a CE.
Workers were also not adequately clothed or fed during the construction, and due to the lack of safety equipment, dozens of people were injured on site.

Construction workers were not compensated and have complained about their treatment, another source told Yonhap.
I wonder how many will be sent to reeducation camps for this.

Feds Threaten to Shut Down DC Transportation
Sorta like North Carolina
US Department of Transportation Secretary Foxx says he is considering shutting down the Metro in Washington, D.C., after a series of a electrical incidents. "We have the ability to withhold funds from Metro. We have the ability to shut Metro down, and we're not afraid to use it," he said. The Department of Transportation believes too much electricity flows through the subway system.
Too much electricity? You mean too much power? Or too many amperes? Draws too much current for the overworked, underfunded, antiquated power distribution system?
The Federal Transit Administration, issued a series of emergency safety directives to Metro officials on Saturday that included steps to reduce power throughout the rail system. One recommendation is to cut the number of railcars per train from eight to six. That would make trains far more crowded at peak hours.
I've ridden those trains at peak hours. There is no more room for more people. Literally. Remember, Metro is funded mostly by the adjacent states, not the Feds, since it serves to deliver the workers from those states to the federal sweatshops, without overloading state highways.
The subway system is used by about 700,000 riders a day.
That's 350,000 more cars in the morning, and the same 350,000 cars in the evening. Unless the federal workers are permitted to work from home. Or maybe just the disadvantaged ones.

Olympic Sh!tshow - Soccer Star Sez 'Stay Away!'
It's gonna get UGLY!
Brazil soccer great Rivaldo is telling tourists to stay away from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro because of the danger of endemic violence.

Rivaldo posted the warning on his Instagram account and alluded to the case of a 17-year-old woman killed on Saturday in a shootout.

"Things are getting uglier here every day," Rivaldo wrote. "I advise everyone with plans to visit Brazil for the Olympics in Rio -- to stay home. You'll be putting your life at risk here. This is without even speaking about the state of public hospitals and all the Brazilian political mess. Only God can change the situation in our Brazil."

The Olympics open in just under three months.

In a recent statement, Amnesty International said at least 11 people were killed in police shootings in Rio's impoverished favelas in April. It said at least 307 people were killed by police last year, accounting for 20 percent of the homicides in the city.

Violence is one in a long line of problems facing South America's first Olympics. Although venues are largely ready, the Zika virus, water pollution, and lukewarm tickets sales are worrying organizers. In addition, Brazil is in its deepest recession in decades and President Dilma Rousseff is fighting impeachment.
It'll be their last for a few generations.

#1  As someone who stood in Daley Plaza only to find out Chicago would not be hosting the boondoggle in 2016, it warms my heart and triggers my "I told ya so" reflex. I have gone out of my way to travel to the last 2 Summer Olympics cities about 2 months before each of them on the premise that these cities would never look better than prior to a host city event... I avoided Rio based on the calculus of crime and Zika. No doubt in my mind Chicago would have been a "corruptapaloosa" but I am confident we would have showed real well and maybe given the gangs a reason to stop shooting at each other for a couple of weeks.

set some hurdles out with some skirmishers, form a thin phalanx with shot put, javelin, archers behind them. Sprinters on the wings to hold the flank or pursue. Hold the regatta teams near to the coast to prevent being flanked and/or resupply by water. Not sure what to do with the meterball players. Maybe have them flop around pretending to be casualties, garnish sympathy or something.

Raytheon Can Turn Old American-Made M60A3 Tanks Into Killing Machines
[The National Interest] Raytheon is pitching a new upgrade for the venerable M60A3 Patton main battle tank that would turn the elderly design into a competitive force on the modern battlefield--all at a fraction of the cost of a new vehicle.

Named the Raytheon M60A3 Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), the upgrade is being offered for export to nations that need the performance to take on threats like a Russian-built T-90S, but can’t afford a top-of-the-line machine like the M1A2 SEP(v)3 Abrams or Leopard 2A7.

At the core of the upgrade is a new 950-horsepower diesel engine--which replaces the original 750-horsepower unit. As part of the deal, the engine would be reconditioned to a zero hour condition. Meanwhile, the old turret hydraulic controls would be replaced with new electrical systems, which are faster, more responsive and quieter than their predecessors.

Offensive firepower is exponentially improved by swapping out the old 105mm M68 rifled gun in favor of the Abrams’ German-made L44 120mm smoothbore cannon. The addition of the new weapon would give the M60A3 the ability to engage enemy tanks as advanced as the T-90MS on a near equal footing. In fact, with the upgrade, the M60 probably outperforms older M1A1 variants.

#1  They can improve speed and firepower, but survivability is still a stickler. Can't really improve the armor and there is only so much reactive armor can do.

An active defense helps, but the M-60 is still a little weak compared to modern tank armor.

Posted by: 3dc || 05/11/2016 12:01 Comments || Top||

#3  They could also improve the M-1 a lot by putting a current-tech diesel in it. Since the gas turbines are a little long in the tooth and maintenance is getting harder with them, I think it would help a lot.

Posted by: Frank G || 05/11/2016 14:27 Comments || Top||

#5  Since the gas turbines are a little long in the tooth.....

I believe the Marines continue to use the JP-8 fuel in their M1A1 so they can utilize the same fuel type for all their large military engines, including jets and helos. Keeps the supply chain fairly simple (except for dealing with the 'Pogues').

I do know that the Aussies use a diesel-fuel only engine as their military doesn't use the JP-8 much.

#6  #2 How much more work just to make a tank-drone out of it?

Phase 2 of the plan, no doubt. We shall soon hear about tank swarms on This Week In Killer Robots.

#7  Nothing says a blend of offensive TO&E armor units with the M1Abrams latest variant cannot be married to a defensive oriented organization like border or base defense units with the upgraded M-60Awhatever. High protection Chobham allows for offensive maneuver, but with the bigger/better tooth L44 120mm smoothbore cannon, state of the art fire control systems and comms, it would remain a formidable second tier unit at a fraction of the cost. Instead of rust targets or memorials, perhaps a border/base defense application?

Iraq
Car bomb in Baghdad's Sadr City kills 50
[Reuters] A car bomb claimed by Islamic State in a Shi'ite Muslim district of Baghdad killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 60 others on Wednesday, Iraqi police and hospital sources said.

The SUV packed with explosives went off near a beauty salon in a bustling market at rush hour in Sadr City. Most of the victims were women and many of the wounded are in critical condition, the sources said.

Amaq news agency, which supports Islamic State, said a suicide bomber had targeted Shi'ite militia fighters.

The ultra-hardline Sunni jihadist group, which considers Shi'ites apostates, claimed a twin suicide bombing in Sadr City in February that killed 70 people.

Security has gradually improved in Baghdad, which was the target of daily bombings a decade ago, but violence directed against both the security forces and civilians is still frequent and large blasts sometimes set off reprisal attacks.

The fight against Islamic State has exacerbated a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq, mostly between the Shi'ite majority and the Sunni minority.

Sectarian violence also threatens to undermine U.S.-backed efforts to dislodge the militant group from vast areas of the north and west of Iraq that they seized in 2014.

White House proud of West Point cadets in black power pride photo
[Wash Times] The White House refused Tuesday to criticize black female West Point cadets who posed for a photo giving a black-pride gesture, saying only that President Obama is proud of the class of 2016.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest acknowledged the photo "has generated some discussions about race relations in our country."

"But the real focus should be on the tremendous accomplishments of these cadets," Mr. Earnest said. "I'm not going to try to divine the message that those cadets were attempting to send."

The 16 women posed for a photo in front of historic Nininger Hall at the academy, with clenched fists raised. It caused a debate on campus about the potential breach of the taboo against advocacy by military personnel.

Mr. Earnest said the president "has an enormous amount of pride in the class of 2016," noting that he has given two commencement addresses at West Point. The president this spring will deliver the graduation speech at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Forcing members of the so-called 'transgender' community to use a biologically assigned bathroom is a new form of apartheid.

Puerto Rico Might Start Cutting Pensions To Deal With Debt Crisis
[Daily Caller] Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday pension cuts are on the table for Puerto Rico to help deal with the debt-ridden island’s fiscal woes.

The commonwealth - which faces a $70 billion debt burden and recently defaulted on a major payment - has been pushing Congress to extend it Chapter 9 bankruptcy rights. Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla has said on numerous occasions he has ruled out cutting pensions as an option to pay its bills.

#1  You didn't create or earn that. Those are not earnings, those are gov't benefit funds. Retro-active compliance as well; any pension funds now in IRA's or 401K's will need to be forfeited or traded for gov't bonds. We'll need those funds also. Our gov't dollars in your investment plans are now frozen. You have until 15 April 2017 to make the conversion or forward payment.

And we were concerned about losing the COLA.

#3  IRA's and 401Ks are not pension funds, but savings on which taxes have not been paid. Then of course there are the regular FDIC savings. A vast amount of $ waiting for government seizure. I am sure the US Supreme Court can easily find a reason to ratify emergency seizure of all such funds, just as it ratified the seizure of private gold and the abolition of certain legal contracts in 1933, or the asset stripping done for Japanese Americans interned by the feds during WWII.

Of course first they would need to make it impossible for people to do an 'early distribution'. So people wouldn't opt for the 10% early distribution loss over the 40-70% loss of 'equal distribution'.

Trump Paralyzed Hillary's Campaign
h/t Instapundit
...This boilerplate Democratic campaign strategy would be fine -- perhaps even compelling - if deployed against a vanilla Republican candidate. Trump is, however, no Republican cast in the same mold as George W. Bush, John McCain, or Mitt Romney. In fact, as Team Clinton was revealing its intention to attack Trump for his proposal to ease the tax burden on the rich, the news cycle was already dominated by Trump's decision to buck Republican orthodoxy on taxes in an interview with NBC's Chuck Todd.

...It's not merely the Clinton campaign's bullheaded determination to plunge forward with an uncreative campaign strategy that was designed and implemented well before Donald Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee. Clinton appears to have learned nothing from the pile of Republican bodies Trump left in the wake of his scorched earth primary campaign.

"She’s married to a man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics," Trump said of his friend, golf buddy, and the inspiration for his 2016 presidential bid, former President Bill Clinton. "She’s been the total enabler." The celebrity candidate added of the former first lady. "She would go after these women and destroy their lives. She was an unbelievably nasty, mean enabler, and what she did to a lot of those women is disgraceful."

ROGER SIMON: Clueless Republicans
I'm a bit perplexed with the continued resistance of so many of my right-wing brothers and sisters to Donald Trump. If it's just his brash style and vulgar taste, his preference for glittery gold over brushed nickel or flat black for his bathroom fixtures, I could understand it. I'm a flat black guy myself. But it's so much more than that.

The latest "betrayal" is that Trump admitted his tax plan was negotiable Imagine that--a tax plan being negotiated between the administration and Congress! Never heard of that before.... oh, wait.

...Meanwhile, to almost everyone's surprise, the Democrats are still fighting, their internal enmity growing as Comrade Bernie wins primary after primary, sometimes by large majorities, and Lady Hillary clings to her super delegates like a three-year-old to a blanket. What happens if she loses California? According to West Virginia exit polls, a full third of Democratic primary voters are ready to defect to Trump. In the latest poll of swing states, Donald is already ahead of Clinton in Ohio and neck-and-neck in Florida and Pennsylvania. And the big show is just getting started.

It is the Democrats, not the Republicans, that have the problem, but you wouldn't know it if you watched, say, The Kelly File or had your Internet perpetually wired to National Review or The Weekly Standard, where the writing is as elegant as the thinking, these days, is often fuzzy. The Democrats are fighting a real war of ideas, disreputable though those ideas may be, while the Republicans fight a status war among themselves, a battle over control, not, except in the margins, over ideology.

Am I wrong? Remind me again where Trump, at least currently, is not a conservative? Taxes, check. Deficit, check. Immigration, check. Sanctuary cities, check. Strong defense, check. Supreme Court, check. Veterans, check. Common core, check. Iran deal, check. Israel, check. Healthcare, check. Pro-life, check.... Oh, yes, Planned Parenthood. He thinks the part of that operation that treats cervical cancer is okay. What a sin.

But...but...but... he has those whacky ideas on NATO and nuclear weapons and trade.
IMO, it's because they're afraid "the whole World" will make fun of Americans for electing Donald---the way they made fun of Americans for electing Ronald.

More on Champ's '€˜boy wonder' Mr. Ben Rhodes
Excerpt: [Wash Times] Rhodes now 38, was a student of fiction writing at New York University on Sept. 11, 2001. Mr. Samuels details the path he followed to become "the Boy Wonder of the Obama White House" -- "the single most influential voice shaping American foreign policy aside from Potus himself."

Mr. Samuels adds that Mr. Rhodes's "lack of conventional real-world experience of the kind that normally precedes responsibility for the fate of nations -- like military or diplomatic service, or even a master’s degree in international relations, rather than creative writing -- is still startling."
It's not just that the MSM has been exposed on the Iran story. It's that they've been exposed as having been conned on just about EVERYTHING the Obama administration has put out there in the past seven years.

And how, likely, they were conned by the Democrats in the Bush years.

And how, likely, they were conned by the Clintons in Bill's two terms.

Once you demonstrate that the MSM is full of marks and rubes who are easily conned, it's hard to draw a line that says, "okay, here's a story in which the MSM wasn't manipulated."

#1  Snippet from 5 May 2016 NYT piece.

In Panetta’s telling, his own experience at the Pentagon under Obama sometimes resembled being installed in the driver’s seat of a car and finding that the steering wheel and brakes had been disconnected from the engine. Obama and his aides used political elders like him, Robert Gates and Hillary Clinton as cover to end the Iraq war, and then decided to steer their own course, he suggests. While Panetta pointedly never mentions Rhodes’s name, it is clear whom he is talking about.

Israeli murdered by Palestinian teens in supermarket given posthumous military honor
[LI] Today is Israel Memorial Day, in which those killed in combat and in terrorist attacks are remembered.

One of my goals is to follow up on the victims of the Knife Intifada. Last week I updated regarding the murder of Israeli mother Dafna Meir, who was stabbed in her home by a Palestinian teen in front of her children; the 16 year old was recently convicted. When I travel to Israel again, currently planned for June, I hope to meet with several of the families.

You may recall our on February 19, 2016, report on the murder of Tuvia Yanai Weissman, 21, who was stabbed to death in a supermarket while he was shopping with his wife and baby daughter. When he saw the Palestinians stabbing other shoppers, he rushed towards them and fought them with his bare hands, but was killed in the process.

He was an American citizen. The Palestinian attackers were 14 years old. They were shot by a private citizen during the assault. One died and was treated in an Israeli hospital. Three Palestinians teens were indicted in the attack.

Weissman’s heroism in coming to the rescue of other shoppers under attack has been recognized by the IDF.

Measles Outbreak in Memphis Began at Mosque
[Breitbart] The first reported case of a person with measles in the recent Memphis outbreak, which now numbers seven confirmed cases, was at a local mosque on April 15, according to the Shelby County Health Department.

"The first public place where there was a public exposure potentially [to measles] was the Masjid Al-Noor Mosque on April 15," Dr. Alisa Haushalter, Director of the Shelby County Health Department, tells Breitbart News.

"The mosque is one location we know that individuals who were infectious were during their infectious period, but that’s not necessarily where the first case occurred. I don’t want you to draw conclusions without sufficient information," she added.

Haushalter acknowledged, however, that the measles outbreak could have originated with an unvaccinated for measles adult or child brought to Tennessee under the federal refugee resettlement program, something she called "a possibility amongst many."

Why Only Israel Can Customize America's F-35 (At Least For Now)
They'll probably stop it just as soon as Israel's three high-school coders that they put on this project get ahead of our lame-a$$ army of coders.
Any big-ticket military technology purchased from the US comes with rules. Big stacks of strict guidelines outline exactly what allies can do to the hardware and the systems that run it. Generally, it comes down to: nothing. No modifications, no additions, no deletions. You can’t even make repairs without written consent from the Pentagon.

Uncle Sam typically responds to such requests with a resounding no, especially when the hardware in question is the wildly advanced (and wildly over budget) F-35 Lightning II Joint Striker Fighter. The stealth fighter jet, which Lockheed Martin is selling to US allies, comes with caveats that expressly prohibit unauthorized tinkering and a requirement that only US-run facilities service the plane. These rules, designed to protect deeply intertwined systems and maintain the security of sensitive technology, are non-negotiable.

Unless you are Israel.

Israel will be the first ally to receive the aircraft when its deliveries begin in December, and it will for the foreseeable future be the only country allowed to install customized software and weapons. The software is an app-like "command and control" system used elsewhere in the Israeli Air Force’s fleet; the weapons would initially be an Israeli-built missile system. The US will most likely also let the Israeli Air Force service the jets independently.

The negotiations are still ongoing within Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office, which grants such approvals. Final decisions are expected this year. One reason Israel gets a pass is because of its technological track record, particularly with US weaponry. Israel’s Air Force has long tweaked F-16s and F-15 to integrate its own systems.

Israel is quite adept at building advanced military technologies, from weapons systems to sensors to communications gear, and sells a lot of it to the US. Israel’s Litening precision targeting system--an external pod that uses infrared imaging and laser range-finding to guide bombs to targets--is used in a variety of US Air Force and Navy aircraft. The sophisticated Joint Helmet-Mounted Display system for F-22 fighter pilots leans heavily on Israeli technology.

But an even bigger part of the explanation has to do with Israel’s state of perpetual conflict, which makes it a different sort of ally for the US. Speaking at a conference last month in Tel Aviv, as Defense News reported, Israeli Air Force chief of staff Brigadier General Tal Kalman suggested Israel’s "unique requirements" justify a degree of autonomy with the F-35. Israel is pursuing its own maintenance center at Nevatim Air Base, where the jets will be based. When you might go to war at any moment, the argument goes, you can’t have your best hardware go out of service for weeks at a time for checkouts that can take just a few days on your own turf.

Israel receives about 55 percent of the State Department’s Foreign Military Financing budget, according to Defense News. A new agreement currently being negotiated could see $40 billion go to support Israel’s military needs over the next 10 years--a number that Israel currently thinks is inadequate, given how much technological advancement its regional adversaries, primarily Iran, have recently clocked.

From that perspective, what helps Israel helps the United States‐and the F-35 will give Israel an overall airpower advantage that could last decades. But system security remains a key concern for the US. It helps that the key piece of software Israel is adding to the F-35I (its official designation) won’t affect the airplane’s own software. It’s a free-standing, add-on app for what’s known as C4 systems--command, control, communications and computing. The app draws data streams from the F-35’s own open-architecture operating system in order to provide additional functionality. According to Benni Cohen, a general manager at Israel Aerospace Industries, the state-owned military technology developer that’s creating the new app, it gives the air force an easy tool for adapting the F-35 to its own needs. "[Our] open-system architecture enables rapid software and hardware development cycles that will also provide more affordable modernization and support of systems over the platform’s life cycle," Cohen said.

It will also allow easy integration with the current systems used by the Israeli Air Force, including those within the force’s existing F-16 and F-15 fighters, Cohen added. Variations of the same software slated for the F-35 already exist in those fighters imported from the United States. The F-35 will effectively "play nice" with the IAF’s current resources.

The other nations buying the F-35--the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Australia, Norway, and Denmark--have spent years negotiating how much they’ll be allowed to tinker with the jet. None have had the success that Israel appears to be achieving. Beyond the app integration--which may actually inspire other program partners and customers to pursue similar tactics, according to Aviation Week & Space Technology--Israel will likely also add its Spice 1000 precision missile system, among other possible weapons, along with so-called conformal fuel tanks, which mount above the wings and close to the fuselage, to the fighter. Though they could extend the fighter’s range by up to 40 percent, those tanks will likely compromise the jet’s stealth capability.

The US is working with Israel to ensure that all their proposed systems will work harmoniously with the F-35’s native systems, and that its proposed maintenance facility at Nevatim air base will be adequately secure. When the jets start arriving later this year, Israel intends to make then fully combat-ready within just 12 months.

Chelsea Clinton's Husband Shuts Down Greek Hedge Fund
You can't fix stupid. Long positions on Greek government & bank debt? Really?
Mr. Chelsea Clinton and his partners began raising money in 2011 from investors for the firm’s flagship fund. Since then, that portfolio has posted uneven performance. A Stanford University graduate, Mr. Mezvinsky worked at Goldman for eight years before leaving to join a private equity firm. He left that job to form Eaglevale with two longtime Goldman partners, Bennett Grau and Mark Mallon. The hedge fund firm is named after a bridge in Central Park.

As noted above, some of the firm’s earliest investors were Goldman partners, including Lloyd C. Blankfein, Goldman’s chief executive officer, who let Eaglevale use his name in marketing the flagship fund. Ironically this is in addition to the hundreds of thousands of dollars that Goldman paid to Marc's mother-in-law. One almost wonders who "benefits" Goldman was seeking to get out of this particular relationship.

But on a less sarcastic note, we agree with the NYT that it is not at all clear why Eaglevale waited until this year to close the Hellenic fund, which already had lost about 40% of its value by early last year.

Perhaps it was just hope that the Greek people would simply pick up and rebuild the devastated economy from scratch, ideally without getting paid (the word slavery comes to mind), thereby miraculously rescuing his investment. In letters to investors in 2014, Mezvinsky and his partners expressed confidence that Greece would soon be on the path to a "sustainable recovery." But by the end of that year, Eaglevale’s leaders began to acknowledge that their perspective on the situation in Greece may have been wrong. The fund had earlier stopped taking in new money.

London's New Mayor Warns Trump: Let In Muslims Or They Will Attack America
[Daily Caller] The new Muslim mayor of London has issued a warning to Donald Trump: Moderate your stance on Muslims, or they will launch more attacks against America.

Trump recently praised Sadiq Khan for winning London’s mayoral race, and said he would be willing to create an exception in his policy restricting Muslim entry into the United States in order to allow Khan to visit. But in a statement Tuesday, Khan dismissed Trump’s invitation, and also denounced his views on Islam as "ignorant," suggesting Trump’s policies would increase the terrorist threat in both the U.S. and U.K.

Report: Israeli fighter jets strike weapons convoy headed towards Hezbollah
[Jpost] The attack allegedly occurred on the Syrian-Lebanese border earlier in the afternoon and struck a number of vital positions important to the terror organization.

Israeli Air Force fighter jets struck a weapons convoy headed into the hands of Hezbollah fighters in Syria, Channel 2 citing Arab media sources reported Tuesday.

The attack allegedly occurred on the Syrian-Lebanese border earlier in the afternoon and struck a number of vital positions important to the terror organization.

Channel 2 added that the Israeli Air Force struck the weapons convoy near a Syrian "rebel safe-haven" where Hezbollah Lions of Islam were allegedly stationed.

If the reports are confirmed, it would not be Israel's first military excursion into enemy territory to stop the transfer of weapons to its arch nemesis Hezbollah.

Last month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged for the first time that Israel has taken action dozens of times beyond the northern border to prevent Hezbollah from attaining "game-changing" weaponry."

"We are proud that, in the stormy and volatile Middle East, we were able to maintain relative calm and relative safety in Israel. We act when we should act, including here, across the border, in dozens of attacks, to prevent Hezbollah from acquiring game-changing weaponry," the premier said.

Netanyahu said Israel was acting on other fronts as well, "nearby and far away, but are doing it in an intelligent manner." The country, he said was facing Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and Hezbollah in the north, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
in the Gazoo Strip and Islamic State and global jihadists in Sinai.

Speaking to the soldiers, Netanyahu said: "This is our country, and we need to defend it; nobody else will defend it except us.

Masked Palestinian terrorists at large after stabbing 2 elderly women in Jerusalem
[Jpost] Victims, ages 86 and 82, in stable, pH balanced condition; Police release 2 suspects after interrogation, continue searching in capital.

A peaceful morning stroll by a group of elderly Jewish women on a promenade overlooking sweeping vistas of Jerusalem turned into a bloody nightmare when two masked faceless myrmidons stalked and stabbed two of the octogenarians in their backs.

The attack, which ironically took place adjacent to the Peace Forest, occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. when five women, all in their 80s, were walking together on the popular Haas Promenade in Armon Hanatziv/East Talpiot, police said.

"The two faceless myrmidons stabbed them in the back multiple times, both in the upper body, and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace toward the adjacent neighborhood of Jebl Mukaber," police front man Micky Rosenfeld said shortly after the stabbings.

"Police and emergency units rushed to the scene and gave immediate medical assistance before transferring both women to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in moderate condition. While a forensics team searched the area, police set up roadblocks to find the terrorists."

Roughly one hour later, Rosenfeld said, Border Police officers tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
two suspects matching the description of the assailants, but after extensive questioning, both young men were released without charges.

"Police are continuing to search for the faceless myrmidons involved in the attack and hope to make arrests soon," he said later in the day.

Shortly after the attack, Shaare Zedek Medical Center spokeswoman Shoham Ruvio said both victims were in stable, pH balanced condition and expected to survive.

"They are stable and conscious," said Ruvio. "One, 86 years old, was stabbed in the back three times and is in the intensive care unit. The second victim, 82, was also stabbed multiple times and is in the department for heart surgery. She doesn’t need surgery, but is being closely monitored due to a preexisting heart condition."

Meanwhile,
...back at the game, the Babe headed for second base. He almost made it. Then Sheila slapped him....
Rosenfeld said, security has been heightened throughout the capital, and will continue at elevated levels throughout the holiday.

"All public areas will have additional police units deployed and nothing will be left to chance, as the city observes Remembrance Day and Independence Day," he said.

Aleppo truce extended amid bursts of violence
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A ceasefire in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo will be extended by 48 hours beginning at 1 a.m. on Tuesday (6 p.m. ET Monday), state news agency SANA said on Monday, quoting the Syrian military high command.

Aleppo, Syria’s largest pre-war city, has witnessed a vicious flare-up in fighting in recent weeks, shattering a nationwide cessation of hostilities agreement and causing peace talks to collapse.

The cessation of hostilities and such local truces do not include Lion of Islam groups ISIS or al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch, the Nusra Front.

Rebels and the mainstream Syrian opposition have said the Syrian government uses this fact to continue to attack rebel positions. Both sides accuse the other of causing the cessation of hostilities to break down.

In an attempt to revive the cessation of hostilities, a number of short-term local truces have been put in place since April 29, first around Damascus and northern Latakia and then in Aleppo.

The Aleppo truce went into effect in the middle of last week, but there has still been some fighting between rebels and government forces.

The most significant outbreak of violence has been southwest of Aleppo around the town of Kham Touman, which rebels seized on Friday, inflicting a rare setback on government forces and allied Iranian troops who suffered heavy losses in the fighting.

Since the truce started, the aggression staged 94 strikes, killing dozens of civilians, Luqman told Sabaa news agency.

"The Yemeni army and popular committees could not bear assaults by the Saudi-led coalition. It was necessary to respond to such assaults. so they fired a ballistic missile on Khamis Mushait military base," the army spokesman said, noting that the missile is a simple response to the Saudi-led strikes.

"Once again we affirm our commitment to the UN-sponsored ceasefire," Luqman said stressing that the army and the committees have the right to respond.

ISIS seizes Syrian airbase in Homs
HOMS – Subsequent to fierce clashes with Syrian army forces, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Tuesday seized control of a military camp near T4 airbase from the pro-regime army forces in eastern Homs, central Syria, killing dozens of soldiers and wounding others, local sources reported.

ISIS jihadis have targeted several positions of the regime’s army with heavy weapons.

Speaking to ARA News, media activist Nasser al-Ali, based in Palmyra of Homs province, said that ISIS militants launched on Tuesday morning a surprise attack on several strongholds for the regime’s army forces near the T4 airbase, killing dozens of pro-regime troops and wounding many others.

“The ISIS-led attack was preceded by heavy artillery bombardment on the military base before breaking into it,” he reported.

The source explained that the clashes continued for hours and ended up with ISIS control over the entire battalion.

“ISIS also took over two checkpoints for the regime’s defense line near the T4 airbase, after the withdrawal of pro-regime forces towards the T4 airport,” he told ARA News.

At least 20 members of the regime forces were reportedly killed and dozens more were injured, according to a Syrian army officer, who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity for security concerns.

The radical group lost two jihadis during Tuesday’s confrontations, according to sources close to ISIS.

“The [ISIS] jihadis were able to seize control of two cannons [caliber 57 and 23] in addition to a big deal of light and medium weapons, including two military vehicles,” the source added.

During the clashes, ISIS bombed the T4 military airport with mortars and heavy artillery in a bid to prevent the regime’s army from receiving additional reinforcements there. The group seeks to take over the T4 airbase in order to cut the army’s supply lines in the historic city of Palmyra in Homs province.

Goods train hit by bombs in Tandojam
HYDERABAD: Three wagons of a goods train overturned and six others derailed when two bombs exploded on a track near Goth Mureed Sipio railway crossing in Tandojam on Monday.

Hyderabad DIG Khadim Hussain Rind claimed that it was an act of a particular group which was also involved in such subversive activities in the past. He said that a 600-foot portion of the track was damaged.

The bombs weighing 400 grams were fitted with a timer.

The DIG said a pamphlet written in Sindhi was found at the place, but declined to share its contents.

Police quoted the bomb disposal squad as saying that improvised explosive devices were used to target the train.

Hyderabad Railway station superintendent Shamsuddin Solangi said the train carrying coal was going to Punjab from Karachi. No one was injured in the blast which occurred at 12.30pm between Detha and Allah Dino Saand railway stations, he added.

He said two Punjab-bound passenger trains — Zikria Express and Shalimar Express — were stopped at Allah Dino Saand and Palejani railway stations after the blast. They were allowed to leave for their destination after an hour at 1.30pm.

Meanwhile, a goods train hit another stationary goods train near the Latifabad Unit-7 railway crossing on Monday morning. Hyderabad station master Shamsuddin Solangi said driver Jameel and his assistant Mushtaque Ahmed were injured. They were taken to Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad.

The track was cleared at 9am, he said.

In another incident, Punjab-bound Pakistan Express was changing its track when two rear wheels of one bogie slipped near Tando Yousuf railway crossing on Monday evening. A crane was used to put them back on the track. No one was injured.

In a further fit of pique, he threw his last bite of khadim hussain rind across the room and kicked the office safe. "Shamsuddin Solangi!" he cursed, having given himself an extreme tandojam.

This gave him a brilliant inspiration. He turned to his cowering, palejani assistant and bellowed, "Find me Tando Yousef immediately! I don't care if allah dino saand in the world blocks your way!"

Shaboobs say they foiled US special forces raid
Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabab fighters claimed to have foiled an attack involving U.S. special forces overnight Monday to Tuesday near the town of Toratorow, about 60 kilometers south of the capital.
Not likely...
Residents confirmed that heavily armed soldiers backed by helicopters had staged a raid but could not identify the troops.

The Islamist group’s Andalus Radio said in a statement posted on its Instreaming account that they had advance warning of the raid. “The information was already there when they left Belidogle air base,” it said.

It added that Al-Shabab “forces have repelled the Americans. There was heavy fighting which continued for a while, the helicopters landed and collected them back, having failed” their mission.

Sources said that Somali commandos trained by U.S. forces may have taken part in the raid.

It was not immediately possible to identify the target of the raid, though helicopter-backed operations are generally aimed at freeing hostages or eliminating Al-Shabab leaders.

“There was a raid last night, we don’t have details but the information we have got indicates that dozens of Special Forces some of them foreigners were involved in the raid,” Abdukadir Moalim, an elder at a nearby village, said by phone.

Witnesses reported helicopters were used in the raid which lasted more than 40 minutes.

“There were two helicopters last night, I saw them flying in a low level and we could hear the fire exchange and blasts,” said Ahmed Faroje.

An Indian teen was raped by her father. Village elders had her whipped.
[WASHINGTONPOST] The teenage girl, dressed in pink, sits in the dirt before six community elders.

In a scene captured on a cellphone video, one of the men wags his finger angrily at her. He rages: This girl must be punished.

A villager ties her waist with rope, holding the other end, and lifts a tree branch into the air. She bows her head. The first lash comes, then another, then another. Ten in all. She lets out a wail.

Eventually the crowd starts murmuring, “Enough, enough,” although nobody moves to stop the beating. Finally, the man throws down his stick. It’s over.

She is 13 years old. Or maybe 15. Her family doesn’t know for sure. She has never set foot in a school and has spent most of her life doing chores at home, occasionally begging for food and performing in her father’s acrobatic show, for which she is given 20 rupees, about 30 cents.

Her crime? Being too scared to tell anyone her father raped her.

US says it will work with controversial new Philippines leader
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The United States said on Tuesday it would work with the apparent victor of the Philippines presidential election but declined to say if it had any concerns about the controversial policies advocated by maverick Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

"Washington respects the choice of the Philippine people. We gladly work with the leaders they’ve selected," State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said without identifying Duterte by name.

When pressed about whether the United States had any concerns about positions advocated by the tough-talking Duterte, including extrajudicial killings to stamp out crimes and drugs, Trudeau repeated her statement that Washington respected the choice of the voters.

"We look forward to working with the leader that the Philippines has elected," she said.

An official winner had not yet been declared in the Philippines vote, but an unofficial count by an election commission-accredited watchdog showed he had a huge lead over his two closest rivals, both of whom conceded defeat.

Trudeau said several of the presidential contenders had noted that a winner had been unofficially named and welcomed the fact that the vote had been conducted "smoothly and enjoyed historically high levels of participation."

Duterte’s vows to restore law and order resonated with Philippine voters, but his incendiary rhetoric and advocacy of extrajudicial killings to stamp out crime and drugs alarmed many people, who saw it as harkening back to the country’s authoritarian past.

#2  Good point skid. I have spent a lot of time in Davao. The crime there is crazy. There is the NPA, MILF, ASG, and the ARMM. There is mining there and each group extorts their 7%. When the mine fails to pay it get blown up. The airport gets bombed every six months. It is the Wild West. Extra judicial killings are business as usual down there.

Jakarta bombing mastermind to be charged in June
[Channel News Asia] Convicted terrorist and Daesh advocate Aman Abdurrahman will be charged in June for planning the January 14 terror attack in Jakarta.

Tito Karnavian, chief of Indonesia's National Counter-Terrorism Agency, said Aman's involvement was clear. He said, "There is no difficulty (in establishing). There are already many witnesses that have been investigated."

Aman was earlier identified as the suspected mastermind in the Jakarta blasts, carried out by four members of a terror network. All four, along with four bystanders were killed in the bombings.

Aman was previously convicted for his role in setting up a Jemaah Islamiyah training camp in Aceh in 2009. The 44-year-old cleric is currently serving eight years in a maximum security prison in Central Java.

Tito said that Aman was supposed to be released from prison in 2018. On the impending charges, Tito said, "There is still time. There is no need to rush."

Ben Rhodes may have snowed Hillary about Benghazi
Just about everybody who’s anybody in the foreign policy and national security establishment, or “the Blob,” as former campaign van driver and novelist manqué turned Presidential foreign-policy mind-meld Ben Rhodes calls it, has had something to say about the spectacularly revealing Ben Rhodes profile in the New York Times Magazine.

David Samuels of the Times seems to have conducted the interview the way Times journalists usually do with Administration grandees: on his knees, breathlessly counterposed to the his dehiscent slide fastener of his interviewee’s trousers.

Despite his claim to be outside it, Rhodes is a card-carrying Beltway Blob made guy, by dint of his position (which he probably owes to having a brother who’s head of CBS “News”). He is a Deputy National Security Advisor on the National Security Council and has nothing but contempt for people who actually have studied, practiced, or (in the instant case) implemented foreign policy, especially not when it comes down to kinetics.

Conversely, nobody is asking, say, retired special operations sergeants and former defense contractors what they think, but why shouldn’t we stick our oar in? Everyone else is.
No, one must visit the internet blogs for those opinions.
And right now, everybody is talking about how Rhodes admits that the Iran “deal” was built on myth and sold with lies.

Young Hamas member reveals tunnel intel to Israel
[IsraelTimes] Underage operative of terror group interrogated by Shin Bet reveals ’extensive information’ about attack plans, agency says

A teen Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, operative revealed "extensive information" about the terror organization’s tunnels and plans for infiltrating Israel in order to carry out attacks, after he was nabbed
You have the right to remain silent...
by security forces last month, the Shin Bet said Tuesday.

As of last month -- before Israel announced it had discovered a tunnel in Israeli territory -- the terror group was continuing to dig into Israel to carry out attacks despite Israeli efforts to detect and destroy the subterranean passageways, the Shin Bet security service said Tuesday, citing information gleaned from a captured Gazook teen involved in the tunneling project.

In his interrogation, the minor revealed "extensive information on Hamas activities to dig tunnels that are to be used for Hamas fighters to infiltrate Israeli areas," the Shin Bet said.

The security service stressed that the minor is just one of a "succession of [Hamas] operatives" who have provided information to Israel about the terror group’s "intensive tunneling activities."

According to the operative, who was unnamed due to his young age, Hamas is well aware of Israel’s attempts at locating the group’s tunnels, but continues to construct them undeterred, the Shin Bet said.

The teen was arrested prior to the discovery of the two attack tunnels in the past month. Therefore his testimony does not address what impact the still-secret but widely discussed tunnel detection technology has had on Hamas’s burrowing plans.

During his interrogations, the teenage Hamas member gave interrogators details of the locations, building strategies and what materials are used in their construction, the security service said.

"For example, in an effort to camouflage their activities, the diggers are adopting a variety of methods like forbidding them from leaving the tunnels in work clothes, requiring them to shower and change clothes within the tunnel, and more," the Shin Bet said.

Hamas also planted explosives both along the tunnels and in the areas surrounding them, in order to prevent Israeli forces from entering them and killing those who do, the teenager told interrogators.

In addition, the Hamas detainee revealed some of the terror group’s battle plans for future conflicts. For instance, most of the group’s training exercises were "offensive," as opposed to defensive, dealing with "infiltration, entering buildings, detonating explosives, etc.," the security service said.

According to the Shin Bet, this appears to be "a part of their battle plan to have the next fighting take place within Israeli territory."

Interrogators also extracted information "about the routes of the tunnels that will be used in emergency situations by Nachba operatives, the elite unit of Hamas, and also information about the numerous tunnel shafts in the Strip," the Shin Bet said in a statement.

The Paleostinian teen came from the Jabaliya refugee camp and belonged to Hamas’s Northern Gazoo Brigade, the Shin Bet said. The unnamed teen admitted to interrogators that he had joined the terror organization just before the 2014 Gazoo war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. During the 50-day conflict, the teen took part in the fighting, "including in ambushes, as a lookout against IDF forces, doing reconnaissance and digging tunnels into Israel," the Shin Bet said.

In addition to his tunnel-digging role and combat training, the underage Hamas member kept explosives in his home for the terrorist organization, the Shin Bet said.

For his actions in the organization, the Gazook teen was indicted Tuesday in a Beersheba court.

That doesn't sound like "If we win Nebraska we're back in!", it sounds like "If catastrophe happens or the convention wants a compromise Candidate, I'll throw my hat back in."

How exactly is that unreasonable? Yes it was in response to a question on Nebraska from Beck( though I don't know the tone or if it was said jokingly, since audio isn't linked), but still. That seems a reasonable statement.

Six policemen injured in militant attack in Chechnya
[RFE/RL] Six policemen were injured in a militant attack at a security checkpoint in Chechnya. The Chechen Interior Ministry said the incident near Grozny on May 9 left three of the police officers in a grave condition.

Security measures have been increased in Chechnya as Russia and some former Soviet republics mark the 71st anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. May 9 also marks 12 years since former Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov was killed in a bombing in the central stadium in Grozny during the Victory Day parade. Islamist insurgents claimed responsibility for that attack which killed more than a dozen other people.

Ramzan Kadyrov, Akhmad's son, is Chechnya's Kremlin-appointed strongman.

US Won't Seek Death Penalty Against Benghazi Suspect
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] The Justice Department will not seek the death penalty against Ahmed Abu Khattala, the suspected Libyan holy warrior charged in the Benghazi attacks that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, federal officials announced Tuesday. The department revealed its decision in a court filing that provided no explanation.

His attorneys had been imploring the Justice Department to remove the death penalty as a possibility if Khattala is ultimately convicted at trial.
How much did he give the Clinton campaign? If it's good enough for the Dept. of Justice, it's good enough for defendants...
Khattala, captured by U.S. special forces in Libya two years ago and brought to the U.S. aboard a Navy ship, has been awaiting trial in federal court in Washington in connection with the September 2012 violence at a diplomatic compound in Benghazi.

Prosecutors have described him as a ringleader of the attacks, which quickly emerged as a political flashpoint and became the topic of congressional hearings involving Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as For a good time at 3 a.m. call Hillary and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Timothy Pickering ...
, who was secretary of state at the time of the rampage.

The 18-count indictment arises from a burst of violence that began the night of Sept. 11, 2012, at a State Department diplomatic compound, an attack prosecutors say was aimed at murdering American personnel and plundering maps, documents and other property from the post. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed, along with Sean Patrick Smith, a State Department information management officer.

#1  Assuming it doesn't resolve through a plea agreement, a trial of Abu Khattala would represent one of the most significant terrorism prosecutions in recent years and also an illustration of the Obama administration's commitment to prosecuting suspected militants captured overseas in U.S. civilian courts.

Reads like a Ben Rhodes press release.

Iraq
2 ISIS Top Dawgs wiped out in airstrike in Anbar
[ARA News] ERBIL ــ Two top leaders in the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) were killed in a US airstrike in Iraq’s western Anbar province, local sources and US Department of Defense confirmed.

“The US-led coalition forces launched last Friday an air raid targeting Abu Wahib, the military prince of ISIS in Anbar province,” Peter Cook, spokesman for the Pentagon said in a press statement on Monday.

“Abu Wahib, who was a former member of al-Qaeda, appeared in the ISIS-linked executions videos released by the terror group,” Cook said, adding that three other gunmen of ISIS were killed in the same raid.

Speaking to ARA News, Iraqi journalist Kamal Khalif said that the US and European countries are involved in the eradication of ISIS in both Syria and Iraq because the latter had become a major threat to the entire world.

“According to the western powers, killing the group’s top leaders has weakened its structure from within and this will accelerate its elimination and clear the area from its abomination,” he argued.

US has recently carried out several strategic operations against ISIS leaders, killing several prominent jihadis in Iraq and Syria.

In the meantime, Rajeh Haji Sherida, an ISIS leading member, was reportedly killed on Monday evening, according to local media sources in Nineveh, who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity.

Sharida has served as the group’s Grand Mufti in Nineveh and was one of the most renowned members of Sharia court in the region, activists reported.

Head of Nineveh media center Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News that the raid targeted Sherida’s car on the third bridge in the city of Mosul, killing him along with tow other ISIS militants, identified as Amir Fathi Osman and Shet Mahmoud.

In other developments, fierce battles erupted between ISIS militants and the Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces south of Mosul and ended with the latter’s control of several strategic areas, according to al-Zarari.

The source confirmed that several areas have been recaptured by Iraqi and Peshmerga forces in the region, including the key village of Kabruk.

Thousands of civilians have been displaced in Nineveh and Anbar provinces. The Peshmerga forces contribute to secure their access routes toward refugee camps equipped for this purpose in the Makhmur district in Erbil Governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan.

IDF officer seriously hurt by bombs at West Bank checkpoint
[IsraelTimes] Improvised bombs appear to have been planted along the road outside the Paleostinian village of Hizme

An IDF officer was maimed Tuesday night when four pipe bombs detonated near him at a West Bank checkpoint outside of the Paleostinian village of Hizme, north of Jerusalem.

According to an initial investigation at the scene, the army believes the four improvised bomb had been planted earlier along the road and detonated as the troops approached, the IDF said in a statement.

The bombs detonated near the man’s face, seriously wounding him. He was taken to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem neighborhood and rushed into an operating room for treatment, a hospital spokesperson said.

IDF soldiers, along with a police sapper unit, located five unwent kaboom! pipe bombs in the area. They were "removed and disarmed" in a combined IDF and Israel Police effort, the army said in a statement.

Circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation as of late Tuesday night, an IDF spokesperson said Tuesday night. Paleostinian reports said soldiers were descending on homes and businesses in the area and confiscating closed circuit television cameras in an effort to apprehend suspects.

In addition to his head wound, it is believed that the officer suffered additional injuries, though the full extent of his condition was not immediately known, a hospital spokesperson said. However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
hospital sources said later that his life was not in immediate danger.

Route 437 highway has been closed in both directions because of the incident, police said.

Europe
Italy Arrests Afghan Suspected of Plotting Attacks
[AnNahar] Italian police on Tuesday tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
an Afghan suspected of plotting attacks in Italia, Britannia and La Belle France after finding incriminating evidence on his mobile phone.
Well done, guys!
A second Afghan has been arrested for alleged people trafficking while warrants have been issued for three other people, two Afghans and a Pak man, police said.

The investigation began in December after four Afghans were spotted taking videos inside a shopping center in Bari in southern Italia, and a police search of their phones uncovered other images of the city's airport and port, as well as sites in Rome, Gay Paree and London.

"It was clear these were not tourist images. They appear to have been scouting sensitive sites," prosecutor Roberto Rossi said at a presser in Bari.

The phones also contained images of Italian and Afghan military vehicles and weapons, as well as Taliban propaganda videos
Not ISIS or Al Qaeda? Life gets ever more interesting.
and "a series of chants traditionally sung in preparation for martyrdom", he said.

One of the defendants was also seen in a photograph posing with an MS16 semi automatic rifle, which Rossi said was "not an easy weapon to find on the market".
Have they tried Rotterdam or Marseille?
He also had links on his smartphone to websites "only accessible to those with connections to the international jihadist network".

The suspects had been taking expensive trips around Europe, which they had paid for in cash, Rossi said.

Investigators also uncovered details of trafficking prices and routes of migrants colonists into Italia, but also through Hungary or Calais.

But they were unable to pull information from one of the phones recovered: a locked iPhone.
Ask the FBI -- they've got contacts in iPhone cracking circles.
The two men arrested had each been awarded a humanitarian residence permit in Italia -- one in 2011 and one last week -- and the latter was still living at a reception center for asylum seekers when he was detained.
Those seem to be good places to find bad guys.
Interior Minister Angelino Alfano hailed the "success of a high-level inquiry" and said the case showed no country was "zero risk".

Police said the investigation would continue, with Rossi suggesting it was "likely" the desperados had returned to Afghanistan and Pakistain, but could also be in other European countries.
The Times of Israel names names:
Prosecutors say Hakim Nasiri, 23, was being held on suspicion of international terrorism while Gulistan Ahmadzai, 29, was arrested on suspicion of aiding illegal immigration. Only one of the other suspects is believed to be in Italy.

Afghanistan
Afghan forces facing terrorists supported by neighboring intelligence: Stanikzai
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The former acting minister of defense and acting head of the Afghan intelligence Masoom Stanikzai said the Afghan forces are facing threats posed by bully boyz who are receiving support from the neighboring intelligence.

Stanikzai was speaking during a gathering in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
to introduce the acting NDS chief and acting Minister of Defense.

Without elaborating further on which neighboring country’s intelligence agency is supporting the bully boyz fighting in Afghanistan, Stanikzai said the NDS operatives are always on alert to foil conspiracies against the national stability of the country.

Stanikzai called the NDS operatives a ’Silent Force’ who are always prepared to fight against the foreign conspiracies.

He promised President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
and CEO Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
and the Afghan people to use all efforts to protect the country against the threats posed by the terror groups.

According to Stanizkai, the Afghan forces successfully passed through a challenging year with the lack of necessary equipment to fight the myrmidons.

He said the Afghan forces are well prepared to suppress the bully boyz in the country by receiving more equipment from the international partners.

Hailing the coalition forces for supporting the Afghan forces in training and equipment process, Stanikzai said the Afghan people and Ulemas should support the Afghan forces as they continue to thwart the conspiracies of enemies of Afghanistan.

Africa Subsaharan
We’re not granting amnesty to Boko Haram members -- DHQ
[PUNCHNG] The Defence Headquarters had condemned online reports that 800 Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
members had been granted amnesty.

It said the story was false and called on the public to disregard it, stressing that it would not tolerate acts of terrorism or criminality by any group.

According to the DHQ, the decision to rehabilitate repentant members of Boko Haram is based on a United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
convention and could not be considered as amnesty.

A statement by the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, in response to the report, read, "The attention of Defence Headquarters has been drawn to online Media stating that 800 Boko Haram Terrorists were given Amnesty. The story is false and has no iota of truth in it as DHQ has never mentioned Amnesty in all its statement.

"In line with United Nations convention Charter, which Nigeria is a signatory, The Defence Headquarters came up with an initiative "Öperation Safe Corridor", this initiative is geared towards rehabilitating and reintegrating the repentant gunnies back into normal life in the society.

"Therefore, the general public should disregard these insinuations as the initiative "Operation Safe Corridor" should not be taken as Amnesty."

"We hereby emphasise and stand our position that no act of Terrorism or Criminality will be condoned in our nation by any group. Please be guided."

FG trains 800 repented Boko Haram members

[Daily Post.ng] No fewer than 800 repented members of the Boko Haram sect are currently undergoing various trainings at the moment, the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Sidi said on Monday.

The NEMA DG, who made this disclosure at a two-day Public Hearing on the North East Development Commission Bill, 2016 said that the skill acquisition exercise was being handled by the military and monitored by the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Afghanistan
US-Afghan raid rescues abducted son of former Pakistan PM
[WASHINGTONPOST] U.S. and Afghan forces conducting a raid Tuesday against Islamic snuffies unexpectedly found and rescued the son of a former Pak prime minister who had been kidnapped three years ago, officials said.

Ali Haider Gilani, believed to be about 30, was discovered in good health during the raid near Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistain. The operation killed four of the krazed killers, the officials said.

Gilani is the son of Pakistain’s former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
, who celebrated the rescue with his family. His secular anti-Taliban Pakistain People’s Party’s led several major offensives against Islamic murderous Moslems.

Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar told Pakistain’s foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
, about the raid in a telephone call, the Pakistain Foreign Ministry said.

Gilani was being taken to the Pak Embassy in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
, although officials there said he had not yet arrived, according to Zafar Hashemi, a front man for Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
The raid took place in the Gayan district of Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province, Hashemi told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

It was conducted under the authority of the U.S. anti-terrorist mission in Afghanistan, Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, according to the U.S. military in Afghanistan.

"Four enemy combatants were killed as a result of the operation. No other injuries or damage was observed or reported," the U.S. statement said. The counterterrorism mission was "planned and launched after evidence of terrorist activity was confirmed," it added.

A front man for Afghanistan’s National Security Council, Tawad Ghorzang, told news hounds in Kabul that the rescue took place during an ongoing operation against al-Qaeda and other murderous Moslems.

The operation was not specifically seeking Gilani, but came across him as it was being carried out, Ghorzang said. Gilani was in good health and "will soon be handed through diplomatic channels to Pakistain," he added.

Yemen foes agree major prisoner swap
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Yemeni government officials and rebels agreed on Tuesday to free half of the prisoners and detainees held by both sides within 20 days, officials from the two delegations said.

The deal, seen as the first breakthrough in peace talks which began in Kuwait on April 21, came during a meeting of the joint working group on prisoners and detainees formed by UN special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.

There has been mounting international pressure to end the Yemen

estimates has killed more than 6,400 people and displaced 2.8 million since March last year.

"It was agreed during the meeting to release 50 percent of the prisoners and detainees within the next 20 days," Mane al-Matari, media adviser to Yemen's foreign minister who heads the government delegation, told AFP.

A source close to the rebel delegation confirmed the agreement to release of half of those held by both sides and said "it will be an exchange of prisoners".

The two sides will meet again on Wednesday to finalize the mechanism on how and when the exchange will take place, Matari said.

"The Yemeni government is committed to release all the prisoners as per the agreement," he said.

Matari estimated that their number is in the "thousands", but the rebel source said there may be only hundreds of prisoners involved.

Following a two-day interruption, the two delegations resumed face-to-face talks on Monday after mediation efforts and an appeal by the UN envoy.

Australia holds five suspected of plotting sailing trip to join ISIS
[Jpost] Australian police have detained five men suspected of planning to sail a small boat from the far north to Indonesia and the Philippines en route to joining Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in Syria, officials said on Wednesday.

The men were held on Tuesday after towing the seven-meter boat almost 3,000 km (1,865 miles) from Melbourne to Cairns in Queensland state, police said.

Australia has come under criticism for its tough immigration policies aimed at stopping asylum seekers taking boats from Indonesia to Australia, but few are believed to have attempted the journey in the opposite direction.

"We're investigating the allegation they were planning to make their way through Indonesia to the Philippines, with a view to ending up in Syria," Victoria state Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Patton told news hounds in Melbourne.

"It's not a common occurrence, I would suggest, people trying to get to Syria via boat, but I don't have the exact figures for sure."

The five had not yet been charged. Under tough new security powers passed in 2014, Australian face up to a decade in prison for overseas travel to areas declared off limits, which includes the province of Raqqa in Syria, a key strategic hub for Islamic State myrmidons.

Australia, a staunch US ally, has been on heightened alert for attacks by home-grown murderous Moslems since 2014 and authorities say they have thwarted a number of potential attacks, while there have been several "lone wolf" assaults, including a cafe siege in Sydney that left two hostages and the gunman dead.

Approximately 100 people have left Australia for Syria to fight alongside organizations such as Islamic State, Australia's Immigration Minister said last month.

Police said it was unclear where the men, aged between 21 and 33, had planned to put the boat in the water. Indonesia and Australia share a maritime border, but it spans several hundred kilometers of open sea at its narrowest point.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp said that Melbourne-born radical preacher Musa Cerantonio, a vocal supporter of the Islamic State who was deported from the Philippines to Australia in 2014, was among those detained.

Cerantonio, who converted to Islam from Catholicism at 17, was believed to be planning to join Islamic State when he was deported for having "invalid travel documentation." He was placed under surveillance but not jugged

-Short Attention Span Theater-
CBS sitcom producer apologizes for Srebrenica reference
[RFE/RL] A producer for an American television sitcom that appears to make a joke about the 1995 Srebrenica massacre has apologized, saying the show was not aware of the reference.
I almost believe that -- the producers and writers very likely went to the same fine schools as all those MSM foreign affairs journalists that Ben Rhodes mocked...
Bosnians reacted angrily after an episode of the sitcom, The Odd Couple, aired last month on CBS. In the episode, a male character invites a prospective date to a Serbian restaurant that appears to be called A Taste Of Srebrenica. He also mangles the pronunciation of the town where more than 8,000 young Bosnian men and boys were systematically rounded up and killed by the Bosnian Serb army in 1995.

In a statement, the show's executive producer, Bob Daily said, "We were unaware of any connection to the terrible tragedy in Srebrenica. We would never intentionally disrespect or make light of such an event and sincerely apologize to anyone we may have offended."

"Saying, 'Let's go visit that new Serbian restaurant, The Taste of Srebrenica,' is analogous to saying something as horrendous as: 'Let's go visit that new German restaurant, The Taste of Auschwitz,'" the Congress of North American Bosniaks, which represents migrants and refugees from the region, said in an open letter.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Boycott leader accuses Israel of imposing travel ban
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A leader of the international boycott movement against Israel on Tuesday accused Israeli authorities of imposing a travel ban on him as retribution for his political activities.

The move comes weeks after Israel’s interior minister, who oversees immigration policy, was quoted as saying that he would consider revoking residency rights of Omar Barghouti.

In a possible first step, Barghouti said Tuesday that Israel told him last month that it was not renewing a permit that allows him to travel abroad. As a permanent resident of Israel, he does not hold a passport and instead requires special permission to travel in and out of the country.

Barghouti, a Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
i-born Paleostinian who is married to an Israeli woman, said he has lived legally in Israel since 1994 and never before had a problem renewing his travel permit. He said he does so every two years.

"Refusing to renew my travel document now is therefore clearly political," he said in an email. "It does not just deny me my freedom of movement. It is seen by legal experts as a first step toward revoking my permanent residency, a clearly political and vindictive measure that has no legal basis."

Barghouti is a founder of the international BDS movement, which calls for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

BDS supporters say the movement is using nonviolent means to end Israeli occupation, and it has made gains in recent years. US and British academic unions have endorsed boycotts, student governments at universities have made divestment proposals, and a number of churches have sold off shares in businesses seen as profiting from Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. The BDS movement also claims responsibility for pressuring some large companies to stop or modify operations in Israel.

Israel says the movement’s true goal is to destroy the country. BDS pushes, among other things, for a return of Paleostinian refugees to family properties lost in the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation. Israel says the Paleostinian "right of return" would lead to a massive influx of refugees and mean the end of the country as a Jewish state. Israeli officials have identified the BDS movement as a major threat.

The Israeli Interior Ministry said Tuesday that there is evidence that Barghouti’s "center of life" is in the West Bank, not Israel, and his residency is under review by the attorney general. Barghouti denied the allegation, saying he spends most of his time with his family in the northern Israeli city of Acre.

In late March, Israel’s Interior Minister Aryeh Deri was quoted as telling a conference that he was considering revoking Barghouti’s residency.

"I was given information that his life is in Ramallah and he is using his resident status to travel all over the world in order to operate against Israel in the most serious manner," Deri was quoted as saying. "He was given rights similar to those of a citizen and he took advantage of our enlightened state to portray us as the most horrible state in the world."

The Israeli Justice Ministry confirmed that it was reviewing the case at the request of Deri. It did not say when the review would be completed.

Benghazi nurses executed says IS
The so-called Islamic State (IS) says it has executed two nurses it captured last month during fighting in Gwarsha. In a propaganda video purporting to show the men being slaughtered, IS also claims to have killed a soldier it had also captured. Named as Abdussalam Saaiti, he was filmed digging his own grave before being murdered.

All were shot in the head, supposedly in Gwarsha.

The veracity of the video has not been confirmed.

Nurses Jibril Al-Araibi and Mohamed Al-Rubaie, both from Benghazi, normally worked at Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC). However, they were serving on the front line with the Libyan National Army in the operation in Gwarsha against IS and its allies on 19 April when they were captured.

At the time of the nurses’ capture, BMC staff organised a protest demanding their release. Today, the hospital put out a statement on its Facebook page offering it condolences to the two men’s families, and calling them martyrs. It also called on staff to attend prayers this afternoon for the two nurses at the Nur Al-Huda Mosque in the city’s Salam district.

American jailed for 15 years for trying to join ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 24-year-old Jordanian-American was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday after acknowledging he tried to join the ISIS group.

Alaa Saadeh, of New Jersey, was locked away

in June of last year and pleaded guilty on October 29.

The specific charge was conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist group.

Saadeh was accused of having planned to join the ISIS group and of helping his younger brother Nader leave the United States to join the Death Eater group in Syria in May 2015.

"Saadeh didn't just plan to join ISIS, he facilitated his brother's overseas travel and deliberately took steps to conceal the scheme from law enforcement, said US Attorney Paul Fishman of the District of New Jersey.

The brothers were to have embraced bad boy Islam some time after 2013.

Their parents were expelled from the United States several years ago after an unspecified conviction.

The father lives in Oman and the mother in Jordan.

China-Japan-Koreas
Uighur handed 7-year sentence for viewing film about Muslim migration
[RFA] Authorities in northwestern China's Xinjiang region have given a seven-year prison term to an ethnic Uighur for watching a politically sensitive film on Muslim migration.

Eli Yasin, a resident of Chaghraq township in Akesu prefecture's Wensu county, was sentenced in February after being held since May 2015, sources said, adding that officials had suspected Yasin and family members who viewed the film with him of planning to go abroad "to wage jihad."

However, Hesen Eysa, security chief for Yasin's Karasu village said that family circumstances argued against their having had such a plan. He said, "All of them were over 40 years of age. They had a farm, and they were struggling to survive and provide for their children’s education."

"They showed no signs of opposing the government. At least I never saw any signs of this. As a security chief, I am having a hard time explaining these charges to the people in my village. None of this makes any sense. It is very unjust," he added.

Detained with Yasin were two sisters and the sisters' husbands, all residents of nearby Toxula township and each with three to five children in their own families.

Police officials in Wensu county hung up the phone on learning that a reporter had called them for comment on the matter.

Car bomb kills 3, dozens wounded in Turkey’s Diyarbakir
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A boom-mobile on Tuesday struck a police vehicle that was carrying officers escorting seven recently detained Kurdish bandidos forces of Evil in the mainly-Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, killing three people and wounding 45 others, officials said.

No group had grabbed credit for the attack in Diyarbakir’s Baglar neighborhood, but the state-run Anadolu Agency said it was carried out by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, as the bus was passing by.

The police vehicle was transporting nine coppers taking the seven suspected PKK bandidos forces of Evil for medical checks. The three victims were seriously maimed in the attack and later died in hospital, the Diyarbakir governor's office said in a statement.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the dead included any of the PKK suspects or coppers.

A total of 12 coppers and 33 civilians were maimed in the attack, including people who were passing by or sitting at a nearby open-air cafe, the statement said.

The seven PKK suspects inside the vehicle were detained for allegedly seizing a factory in Diyarbakir, the governor's office said, without providing details.

Kurdish rebels have been targeting police and military targets since July, when a fragile grinding of the peace processor collapsed.

Earlier Tuesday, two coppers were killed while attempting to defuse a roadside kaboom in the eastern province of Van, Anadolu said.

The agency also blamed those deaths on the PKK. Ankara and its allies consider the group a terrorist organization, and Anadolu said air-backed operations were underway to hunt down Kurdish rebels in Van.

...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
(I., Vt.) and Donald Trump, according to a review of federal campaign contributions for the 2016 presidential cycle.

Clinton collected $73,437 from individuals who listed the "Department of Justice" as their employer. Twelve of the 228 contributions were for $2,700, the maximum individual amount allowed by law.

The fundraising haul marks a dramatic increase over Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential run in 2008, when she took in 23 contributions totaling $15,930 from employees at the agency, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Trump, by comparison, has received little help from Justice Department employees, recording just two contributions for a total of $381.

Sanders has taken 51 donations totaling $8,900 from Justice Department employees.

David Bossie, president of the watchdog group Citizens United, told the Washington Free Beacon he is not surprised by the donations, and renewed his call for Attorney General Loretta Lynch to appoint a special counsel to handle Clinton’s case.
How much did Lynch give? And how much more to the Clinton Foundation?

Turkey fulfills 67 of 72 commitments to EU for canceling visa regime
Turkey has fulfilled 67 out of 72 commitments to the European Union (EU) for canceling the visa regime, Turkey's Ministry for EU Affairs told Trend May 10. The remaining five commitments are expected to be fulfilled by late May, said the ministry.

Canceling the visa regime with EU is one of the priorities for Turkey, according to the ministry.

"Once Ankara fulfills all its commitments, the EU will also have to keep its word, that's to say, to cancel the visa regime for Turkish citizens," said the Ministry for EU Affairs.

Earlier, the European Commission proposed the EU to cancel the visa regime with Turkey.

Commenting on the issue, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara has in fact fulfilled its commitments to the EU for cancelling the visa regime.

Earlier, Ankara cancelled the visa regime for the citizens of all 28 EU countries on May 3, but the visa-free regime will be effective after the EU cancels the visa regime for Turkish citizens. It is expected that after Turkey fulfills all 72 commitments to the EU, the latter will cancel the visa regime for Turkish citizens.

Europe
The trial continues: Belgian terror suspect ‘took orders from Paris ringleader’
[IsraelTimes] A Belgian man on trial over a foiled jihadist plot tells a court on Tuesday that he obeyed detailed orders from Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the late ringleader of the deadly Gay Paree attacks.

Mohammed Arshad, 27, says he acted on instructions from Abaaoud to buy walkie-talkies and ingredients for explosives, rented two vehicles and a flat in the town of Verviers, purchased furniture and worked to obtain false papers.

Arshad is one of seven men who went on trial in Brussels on Monday accused of belonging to a cell plotting to kill Belgian coppers, which was dismantled in a deadly raid in Verviers in January 2015.

"It was not very well thought out. I did what was asked of me," Arshad says in a deposition to the court, adding that Abaaoud had put "pressure" on him during calls the latter made from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
Abaaoud was killed in a French police raid days after the November 13 Gay Paree gun and bombing attacks in which he allegedly played the role of ringleader. He also had close links to the cell behind the March 22 Brussels airport and metro attacks.

Corrupt leader ruins entire country: Imran
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Continuing with the criticism of rival Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
over the Panama Papers issue, PTI chairman Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
on Monday said quitting the office would have been the only honourable thing for the prime minister to do.

He also said a dishonest and corrupt leader brought ruin on the entire country.

Addressing a public meeting held here in connection with the PK-8 by-election to be held on May 12, the PTI chief highlighted the menace of rampant corruption in the country and the offshore companies owned by the prime minister’s son and disclosed in Panama Papers and said corruption ruined a country if it wasn’t checked.

He said Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohammad told him once that an honest leader was the main ingredient of a country’s development and prosperity.

Imran Khan began his speech by cheering the youths for their presence despite mismanagement and firing in the air ahead of his arrival at the venue.

He later challenged JUI-F leader and former chief minister Akram Khan Durrani to fulfil what he had promised to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

"Akram Durrani told PM he could topple the KP government. How could he do so since the PTI has the majority in the provincial assembly? Bribery could be his only means (to oust the government). I would let him do it to cleanse my party," he said.

Khamenei vs Rouhani: A Battle for the Future of Iran?
[IranWire] On May 5, Ayatollah Khamenei’s official website published a photograph of a meeting between the supreme leader and senior officials of Hassan Rouhani’s administration. In the photograph, President Rouhani stands to the right of the supreme leader, who is seated. Both men are smiling, and Rouhani holds a pose that suggests deference. The photograph is at odds with recent reports of exchanges between the two men — in fact, with reports of their relationship since Rouhani was elected as president in 2013.

Khamenei is good at detail — except when he wants to avoid it, which was notable in his comments on the nuclear negotiations. He routinely picks at the finer details of a policy he does not like, and is fond of raising his own presidency (1981-1989) in a bid to show that he fully understands the challenges the executive branch of government faces in Iran. As the number of Iranian institutions under the supreme leader’s supervision continues to increase, he continues to remind the public of his expertise in making executive decisions.

Certain emotive and populist refrains pop up in the supreme leader’s speeches, an easy way of getting people who are hesitant about Rouhani’s performance as president on his side. Among his favorite terms are “Iranian interests”, “the Persian Gulf”, “the Iranian people”, “domestic production”, “lifting of sanctions” and “economic boom”— all of them simple ways of reminding the Iranian public that he stands by the people. Although he distanced himself on the nuclear deal, he was also good at raising expectations among the wider public. He knows all to well how devastating a return to a pre-sanctions economy would be for the country. Still, he is comfortable conjuring up this risk, closing his eyes for effect during speeches, balling his hand into a fist and dismissing the outcome of the nuclear negotiation as a “total loss”.

Brazil's Rousseff undone by hubris, economic missteps
[REUTERS] Minutes after taking her oath of office in 2011, President Dilma Rousseff stood before Congress and pledged to end the dirty back-room deals and kickback schemes at the heart of Brazilian politics.

"Corruption will be combated ceaselessly, and the entities that control and investigate these matters will have my full backing," she vowed.

For a time, it seemed she would make good on her promise. In her first year, she forced out seven cabinet ministers tainted by accusations of wrongdoing and had the highest approval rating of any president since Brazil's return to democracy in 1985.

Yet five years on, amid the worst recession since the 1930s, Rousseff will be stripped of office if the Senate, as expected, votes on Wednesday to put her on trial for breaking budgetary laws.

Although she faces no allegations of personal enrichment, Rousseff also stands accused by Brazil's public prosecutor of obstructing a huge corruption investigation at state-run oil company Petrobras (PETR4.SA), Brazil's biggest-ever scandal.

She chaired the board of Petrobras from 2003 to 2010, when the worst of the corruption was taking place.

Rousseff denies any wrongdoing and says she is the victim of a 'coup.' But outrage over the recession and the Petrobras scandal turned most Brazilians against her, motivating opposition efforts to unseat her.

In explaining what went wrong, former ministers, aides and congressmen point to Rousseff's stubbornness, economic mismanagement and a tendency toward self-isolation. Combined, those traits led her to rebuff advice that might have averted recession and saved her politically.

Kidnapping for ransom: Professionals, amateurs and con men
[HERALD.DAWN] Forrmer and serving coppers will tell you that three kinds of people or groups are involved in kidnapping for ransom. The first category comprises organised criminal gangs which kidnap people mainly for money. These gangs are mostly involved in the abduction of wealthy businessmen. Sometimes, these gangs are hired by people to settle personal scores with rivals. Most of these gangs keep their victims within the settled areas, but some transfer their prey to the tribal areas where, according to police officials, "all shades of criminals blend into one another."

The second category consists of those trained by banned krazed killer groups, often linked to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Such groups use kidnapping as a source of revenue for their activities or as a pressure tactic to secure the release of their jugged

activists or both. Police believe that the krazed killer groups involved in kidnappings have developed close links in recent years with criminal gangs that "provide temporary lodging and logistical support" to the kidnappers in return for money. Usually it is the krazed killer groups that select the targets and timings but coppers say they are also "open to suggestions from their local controllers". A retired police officer, who has worked on kidnapping-for-ransom cases, explains that criminal gangs make money by facilitating the snuffies in reaching their target and helping the kidnappers in transporting the kidnapped person to the tribal areas. "Militant groups cannot successfully carry out this kind of operation, especially in [the] case of high-profile kidnappings, without the help of their local controllers," he says.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran has deployed S-300 system, minister says
[IsraelTimes] Hossein Dehghan says Russian-made air defense batteries now in service, Tehran to start manufacturing similar system

Iran’s army is now fully equipped with a Russian air defense system after a long and controversial delivery process, Defense Minister General Hossein Dehghan was quoted as saying Tuesday.

"I inform our people that... we are in possession of the strategic S-300 system" and that it "serves our air force’s counterattack command," Dehghan said, according to the ISNA news agency.
Israel didn't announce (and didn't need to announce) that its system for the S300 is operational, and has been for a while...
Parts of the system, including missile tubes and radar equipment, were displayed on April 17 during a military parade in southern Tehran.

The United States and Israel have criticized Russia for the sale of the S-300 system to the Islamic republic.

Tehran says it needs the system to strengthen its defense against possible attacks, including on its nuclear facilities. The Russian-made system is among the most advanced of its kind in the world, offering long-range protection against both airplanes and missiles.
I wonder if Israel made a deal with Putin so as to obtain the codes for the Iranian S-300s...
Israel has long sought to block the sale to Iran of the S-300 system, which analysts say could impede a potential strike on Tehran’s nuclear facilities. Other officials have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that the systems could eventually be delivered to Syria and Hezbollah, diluting Israel’s regional air supremacy.

The Israeli Air Force has trained for a scenario in which it would have to carry out strikes in Syria or Iran on facilities defended by the S-300 system. In an interview late last year, IAF commander Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel said the S-300 was a "significant but not insurmountable challenge" for the IAF.

"The power of our armed forces is not against our southern, northern, eastern and western neighbors," he said.

Iran and Russia originally signed a contract for its delivery in 2007, but in 2010 Moscow suspended the sale after the UN Security Council issued a resolution against Iran’s nuclear program. In 2010 Russia froze a deal to supply the system to Iran, linking the decision to UN sanctions instituted because of Tehran’s nuclear program. Putin lifted the suspension in July 2015, following Iran’s deal with six world powers that curbed its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international sanctions.

In the last several months, there have been multiple reports in the Russian and Iranian press that delivery of the system was imminent or had been carried out.

Dehghan also announced Tuesday that Iran will start manufacturing this year an air defense system, Bavar 373, "capable of destroying cruise missiles, drones, combat aircraft and ballistic missiles."

"This long-range system is able to destroy several targets at once," he added.

The two countries are also in talks for delivery to Iran of Sukhoi SU-30 fighter jets, a deal criticized by Washington.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
With Israel's okay, Palestinian cops step up operations near Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] PA police are increasingly active on outskirts of capital in villages formally under Israeli security control, seizing weapons and making terror and drug busts
The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend, but he certainly can be an ally of convenience.
The Paleostinian Authority’s police force, in cooperation with Israel, has significantly increased its operations in villages and towns around Jerusalem, Paleostinian sources said this week.

The increased activity is taking place in West Bank areas, designated as Area B, that are formally under Paleostinian civil control and Israeli security authority, the sources told The Times of Israel. PA police are cracking down in these areas on domestic crime, such as drug dealing and car theft, and have also carried out raids on terror groups and confiscations of illegal arms.

The areas where the PA police have increased their activities include Anata, Eizariya, Abu Dis and especially al-Ram, on Jerusalem’s northern outskirts, close to the Jewish neighborhood of Neve Yaakov.

All of these areas are supposed to be under full Israeli security control, but Israel is allowing Paleostinian police to operate there as well, the sources said.

A rise in arrests and thwarted attacks by Paleostinian police has been seen across the West Bank and not just near Jerusalem, but the most dramatic uptick has been noted in recent weeks in al-Ram.

Home to some 70,000 Paleostinians sandwiched alongside the security barrier between Jerusalem and Ramallah, al-Ram has become a hotbed of drug dealing in recent years, as Israeli police avoided the area and Paleostinian security forces were kept out, leaving a vacuum filled by violent gangs.

Until recently the Paleostinian police force there was limited, at Israel’s insistence, to a squad of 15 officers with a few weapons. But that changed after an arrest raid on two suspected drug pusher brothers went awry on April 21, the sources said.

The PA police laid in wait for the suspects, but when the brothers exited their vehicle they saw the cops and opened fire. A Paleostinian police officer was moderately to seriously hurt and was taken for treatment in Israel. Another cop was hit in the shoulder and lightly hurt; a passerby was also injured by the gunfire.

The incident led the Paleostinian Authority to intensify security efforts in al-Ram; the next day, it sent dozens of police to the village, some of whose homes are adjacent to the IDF’s central command headquarters.

Since then, between 50 and 100 PA coppers have been working around the clock and have seized weapons, ammunition and drugs, and busted several drug pushers. In an effort to put pressure on the two suspects who fled the bust in April, several of their relatives were locked away
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
and later released.

Similar PA police activity is under way in Anata, alongside the Shuafat refugee camp on the outskirts of Jerusalem. In reality, it is hard to distinguish between the refugee camp and Anata, but the camp is considered off-limits for Paleostinian police operations because part of it falls within Jerusalem’s municipal jurisdiction.

Last week, Baha Nabata, a Paleostinian activist who worked to improve conditions in the camp and fought against criminal elements there, was murdered there.

PA police have also been active in Eizariya and Abu Dis, as well as Sawahra and Sheikh Sa’ed on Jerusalem’s southern outskirts, near Bethlehem, all in coordination with Israel.

Other areas where Paleostinian police have been operating recently include the villages northwest of Jerusalem such as Bir Naballah, al-Jib, Qatana and Bidu. Tens of thousands of Paleostinians live in these areas, which are close to both Jerusalem and Ramallah but with a lower cost of living than the cities.

Bangladesh executes top Jamaat leader Motiur Rahman over '1971 war crimes'
[DAWN] Bangladesh on Tuesday executed the leader of the country's largest Islamist party for war crimes, officials said, a move set to exacerbate tensions in the volatile Muslim-majority nation.

Motiur Rahman Nizami
...During the liberation war of 1971, Nizami formed the Al-Badr Force and acted as its supreme commander. The Al-Badr militia took active part in rape, extortion, looting and killing of Bangladeshis who supported the liberation, including a pre-planned massacre on December 14, 1971, when the Al-Badr militia along with Pakistan Army rounded up hundreds of doctors, professors, writers, and other Bengali intellectuals, and executed them...
, leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
party, was hanged at a prison in the capital Dhaka, just days after the nation's highest court dismissed his final appeal to overturn the death sentence for atrocities committed during the country's 1971 war.

Law and Justice minister Anisul Huq told AFP the 73-year-old leader was hanged just before midnight (1800 GMT) after he refused to seek mercy from the country's president.

"He was executed between 11:50 pm and 12:00 am midnight," Huq said.

In 2013 the convictions of Jamaat officials for war crimes triggered the country's deadliest violence in decades. Around 500 people were killed, mainly in festivities between Islamists and police, and thousands were tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Nizami is the fifth and highest-ranked opposition leader -- and the fourth from Jamaat -- to have been executed since December 2013 for war crimes despite global criticism of their trials.

"We've been waiting for this day," Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told news hounds, adding that people "will remember this day forever".
