Obama Follows Porn Stars On Twitter
He's doing everything possible to degrade the office of the President, and we still have seven long, hard months to go.
President Obama’s Twitter account, which is run by his "Organizing for Action" staff, follows 636,000 accounts. Many of them you might expect: Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry. Even Mariah Carey and Snoop Dogg don't really raise an eyebrow. But several accounts on the presidential follow list fit a different theme: Asa Akira, a porn star who has 653,000 followers and, in her Twitter bio, states "I have an award-winning asshole." Joanna Angel (390,000 followers), who describes herself as a "multiple award winning punk porno princess;" Penthouse Pet Of The Year Nikki Benz (808,000 followers); and Ashley Steel (138,000 followers), who writes that she is a "Porn Star, Doggy mama, Happiness Junkie, XXX Model, Buddhist, & Total nerd."

Social-media postings now fair game for security clearance reviews
[Hot Air] Welcome to the 21st-century party, pals. Those who have experienced the process of acquiring a security clearance from the federal government know just how invasive and personal it can become, depending on the level of access needed to classified material. Investigators go through financial records, tax returns, and interview family, friends, and even co-workers and neighbors to determine whether the risk is manageable.

What they haven’t done is look on the Internet to read publicly available statements. Until now, anyway:

Gowdy slams '€˜stunningly disrespectful' Pentagon for playing politics with Benghazi investigation
[Hot Air] Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) is not very happy with the Defense Department.

The South Carolina Republican, who chairs the Select Committee on Benghazi, has hit road blocks at the Pentagon for his quest to interview men and women of the military who were on call the night of September 11, 2012 when four Americans died during a seven hour terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.

I interviewed Gowdy on WMAL in Washington, DC Thursday morning, along with my co-host Brian Wilson.

Wilson asked Gowdy to respond to the latest Fox News reports which include anonymous military personnel who say they were told not to intervene that night in Benghazi, even though his unit was ready and prepared to make a difference and, possibly, save American lives.

Gowdy said he was intent on interviewing these witnesses but he has not been able to identify them because the Pentagon is blocking his way. He went on to lambaste the latest exchange of letters with the DOD.

The political appointee Gowdy was referring to was one Stephen Hedger who has recently been appointed as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs. Prior to joining Defense, Hedger was a political operative for Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill on Capitol Hill.

Government Executive highlights part of the letter Gowdy describes as "fiction" in his interview:

Cruz: Those Responsible for Trump's Rise Will 'Bear Responsibility Going Forward

Giant Austrian bank shuts down BDS account

[Jpost] One of Austria’s largest companies – the Erste Group – closed a bank account held by BDS Austria. The Jerusalem Post investigative series on the shadowy world of Israel-boycott funding and terrorism finance transactions revealed the Erste Group bank account with BDS Austria in late March.

This is the second instance in which a European BDS bank account was closed due to stepped up measures to stop illicit or unsavory transactions. In February, the Post reported on the closure of the main German BDS bank account. DAB Bank Munich, owned by the massive French bank BNP Paribas, pulled the plug on an account held by the German BDS campaign.

The Erste Group, along with a host of German, French and Austrian banks, has offices in the US. Robust anti-BDS laws in the US are designed to punish companies that enable or participate in Israel-boycott activities.

13/05/2016 – VIENNA, Austria – Migrant Attempts to Rape Cyclist
Yet another attack in Vienna’s famous Prater park has involved a migrant, who attempted to rape a 48-year old woman who was riding her bike. The 21-year-old migrant from Algeria was fought off by the woman and fled after a passer-by attempted to intervene.

Police found the migrant near the crime scene and arrested him Kronen Zeitung reports.

13/05/2016 – Germany – Private Security Booming Due to Migrant Crisis
The migrant crisis has led to a boom for private security companies who can’t fill vacancies fast enough to guard migrant homes. Around 235,000 people in Germany now work in the sector and there are around 15,000 vacancies. The industry has reported a revenue of seven billion euros in the past year reports N-TV.

The haste to fill positions has led to some questionable recruiting decisions in Germany, as Breitbart London has reported. Many of the new guards are recently arrived migrants themselves with no qualifications and who can barely speak German. Christian refugees have fared particularly badly under their Muslim guards, and there have been reports of bullying.

Before Crafting The Iran Deal Narrative, Email Shows Ben Rhodes Spun Benghazi
[Daily Caller] The White House aide responsible for fabricating the narrative on the Iran deal also had a hand in spinning the events following the attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, an email reveals.
Next week we will learn that the Beest got all of her Benghazi information from Rhodes, and that she was essentially victimized by a carefully crafted disinformation campaign.
Now there's an attribute we want in our chief executive: easily fooled by wannabe novelist.
Deputy National Security Adviser for Communication Ben Rhodes appears to have outlined the administration’s strategy to handling the attacks in an email before holding a phone conversation with National Security Adviser Susan Rice. That email has been obtained by Judicial Watch.
Yes, wannabe novelist. He and Mr. Rhodes have much in common. That is if one assumes Champ penned his own material, which is admittedly a very steep climb.
Among the stated "goals" in the email, dated Friday, September 14, 2012, was to push the narrative that protests led to the attacks on the U.S. consulate. These protests were supposedly the result of an anti-Islam video posted to the internet. The plan found in the email was to push the narrative that the attacks were not the result of "a broader failure of policy."

The attacks in Benghazi led to the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Rhodes has been at the center of controversy since a Thursday New York Times Magazine profile describing his strategy to push the Iran nuclear deal by manipulating media sources and crafting a false narrative around Iranian leadership.

In addition to each goal, Rhodes included a talking point line, one such reads,"we reject its message and its contents. We find it disgusting and reprehensible."

The email contained a list of what appears to be potential questions that Rice would answer on talks shows, complete with prescribed answers. One proposed question asks about a report by the Independent, which claimed the government had intelligence warning of the potential attacks 48-hours before they occurred, which was subsequently ignored. The prescribed response stated: "We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent." The planned response noted the protests and subsequent attacks were "spontaneously inspired" by protests at the U.S. embassy in Egypt.

It has become clear that Rice’s 2012 claims that the attacks were prompted by the video were false. Additionally, a report by Judicial Watch has since shown that the Defense Intelligence Agency had knowledge that an al-Qaida affiliate planned the attack ten days earlier, contradicting the point that it was spontaneous.

Rice would make the rounds on Sunday talk shows the day after the meeting, pushing the narrative outlined in the email nearly verbatim.

Al-Baath militia in Homs province: recruits and fund
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Doctors, university graduates, retired officers, thieves and criminals, volunteers, seniors over sixty and most of them past forty form the bulk of the “al-Baath Brigades” in Homs.

Christians from the Homs countryside feature prominently in the brigade’s membership, but it is impossible to verify if they are present of their own free will or they were coerced into joining the militia. International organizations document this militia and other militia’s violations for its participants and supervisors to be made accountable and brought to justice.
Given that the alternative is being conquered by ISIS, Al Nusra, or any of the other takfiri groups vying for supremacy with ever-shifting alliances that do not include anyone who believes wrongly...
Until the start of 2016, Homs’ branch of the al-Baath party managed to recruit 4281 persons to form an armed militia in parallel to the regime forces. The militia was formed from local members who are party members and the militia was named “al-Baath Brigade.”

India-Pakistan
Ambassador Jilani censures NYT over damning editorial on Pak role in Afghanistan
As if anyone at the New York Times cares about the opinion of some foreign official not even on the Manhattan cocktail circuit.
Especially some foreign official who isn't even on the official gift registry of the Clinton Foundation...
[DAWN] Pakistain Ambassador to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani on Thursday rejected assertions made in a New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
editorial published May 12, which implicated Pakistain for the mess in Afghanistan and termed Islamabad a "duplicitous" and "dangerous" partner for the United States and Afghanistan.

In a statement that was a rejoinder to the NYT indictment, Jilani came out hard against the organization, questioning what he called its "partisanship".

He said the situation in Afghanistan was a "collective failure of the international community".

"The May 12 editorial about Pakistain's role in Afghanistan is biased and negates the complex history of this prolonged conflict.

"Allegations of duplicity and double game were extremely painful as Pakistain has suffered the most due to the war in Afghanistan. Pakistain cannot be held responsible for the mess in Afghanistan which is the result of the collective failure of the international community," Jilani said.

Alluding to the losses Pakistain has suffered as a result of the war in Afghanistan, Jilani said hundreds of suicide kabooms and tens of thousands of civilian casualties were a direct result of the US-led war after 9/11.

"Instead of complaining about the heavy cost imposed on us due to sustained external intervention in our neighbourhood, Pakistain has consistently cooperated with the United States and coalition forces in sharing intelligence and decimating the terror outfits operating from the region," he added.

Jilani also said that since 2009, Pak forces have been engaged in incremental operations to clear Pak soil from all the terrorist networks which are concentrated in this area because of "competing interests and mutual rivalries of the big powers".

"It is Pakistain's military which 'fractured the back of Taliban' through indiscriminate counter-terrorism operations."

Instead of putting the entire blame on Pakistain, the Ambassador said it would have been better had the editorial also commented on the protracted Afghan refugee issue and the lack of border management among as underlying reasons for regional instability.

"Omitting such fundamental questions that impede a long-term solution to the Afghan problem smack partisanship on part of the New York Times."

Jilani made clear that Pakistain did not benefit from instability in Afghanistan and always wished them peace and prosperity. "To this end, we are pursuing mutually beneficial economic integration through the policy of a peaceful neighbourhood."

He pointed out the groundbreaking of CASA‐1000 power project on May 11, which he said will bring Pakistain and Afghanistan closer.

The envoy went on to say that Pakistain played a "completely neutral role in the Afghan elections" and has offered all possible assistance to the Ghani government to find a political solution in his country.

Referring to the quadrilateral group holding talks with the Afghan Taliban ‐ which involves the US, China, Pakistain and Afghanistan ‐ Jilani said talks had reiterated that long-term peace in Afghanistan can only be achieved through reconciliation between the various Afghan stakeholders.

"It is imperative that this peace initiative be given a chance to succeed in what the war has failed to achieve in the last fifteen years."

Afghan envoy calls on Gen Raheel to resolve Torkham border issue
[DAWN] Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Omer Zakhilwal met Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Friday and agreed to resolve the Torkham border issue and resume the routine cross border traffic, military spokesman Lt Gen Asim Bajwa said.

Tensions had heightened between Pakistan and Afghanistan as the two countries deployed tanks and armoured personnel carriers along the tense Torkham border, besides sending more troops after their negotiating teams failed to resolve the border fencing dispute, political administration sources had told Dawn newspaper on Thursday.

Militant commander wounded after hit by a roadside bomb planted own fighters
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A commander of the anti-government armed bully boyz was maimed in an kaboom triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was planted by his own fighters.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the incident took place in Rodat district of eastern Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province.

MoD in a statement said at least two bully boyz were also killed in the incident and four others including the commander of the group were maimed.

The statement by MoD further added that the maimed bully boyz commander has been identified as Zubair who is well known as Abdullah.

The anti-government armed murderous Moslem groups including the Taliban turbans have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) expert of the Taliban group was killed in an kaboom in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan earlier.

According to the security officials, the IED expert and three bully boyz were busy in making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) when the kaboom took place.

The Taliban turbans and bully boyz belonging to the other Lion of Islam groups are frequently using Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces.

The IEDs are the main contributors to the casualties of the Afghan cops but are also considered as a key factor in growing civilian casualties.

Pakistan, Afghanistan deploy tanks as fencing dispute escalates
[DAWN] LANDI KOTAL: Tension further heightened between Pakistain and Afghanistan on Thursday and the two countries deployed tanks and armoured personnel carriers along the tense Torkham border besides sending more troops after their negotiating teams failed to resolve the border fencing dispute, political administration sources told Dawn.

The two countries have locked horns over the issue of fencing of some points at the border.

Pakistain has started fencing some vulnerable points of the border with Afghanistan to plug illegal and secret border crossings and movements of people.

The sources said that Pakistain sent army troops and additional Khasadar Force and Frontier Corps
...a provincial paramilitary force. Total manpower is about 80,000. They are tasked to help local law enforcement in the maintenance of law and order, and to carry out border patrol and anti-smuggling operations....
personnel on the border on Thursday in retaliation to Afghanistan’s reinforcement of its troops and border security forces along the border.

Afghanistan has objected to the border fencing and officially protested to Pakistain over the issue.

Because of the tense situation, the border remained closed for the third consecutive day.

Informed sources told Dawn that negotiating teams of the two countries briefly met at the Pakistain side of the border at around midday amid expectations that the issue would be resolved.

These expectations, however, proved short-lived as the meeting ended without reaching any agreement, much to the disappointment of scores of travellers and traders who have been stranded on both sides of the border for a couple of days.

The Pak team consisted of Sector Commander Brig Qayyum Paracha, Khyber Rifles Commandant Col Tariq Hafeez and Assistant Political Agent Rahimullah Mehsud while the Afghan team was represented by Border Police Commander Zabeehullah and Lt Col Nisar Ahmad.

Africa Horn
AU extends peacekeeping mission in Somalia by a year
The African Union (AU) has extended the mandate of its AMISOM mission in Somalia to May 30, 2017. The decision made public on Wednesday means the 22,000 strong peacekeeping force that was set up to combat Islamist militant group Al-Shabab, will remain in the country for at least another 12 months.

The AU took the decision during the recent 595th meeting of its peace and security council. The body however expressed regret at the decision by the European Union (EU) to cut back its allowance to AMISOM by 20 percent during what it says is a critical phase.

The continental body has thus called on the EU to reconsider its decision ahead of the upcoming elections in Somalia.

Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda have also been called upon to respect their pledges to deploy air assets for AMISOM operations.

AMISOM and the Somali National Army’s consolidation and expansion operations across Somalia have been lauded although it has been observed that al-Shabab still remains a threat to peace, security and stability.

American airstrike help rebels advance in Aleppo
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Syrian rebel fighters on Friday made new gains against militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, amid intensified US-led airstrikes on ISIS fighting positions in the area, military sources reported.

Rebels of the Levant Front [al-Jabha al-Shamiya] and allies recaptured the Yahmoul town in the suburbs of Azaz city north of Aleppo on Friday evening after fierce clashes with ISIS militants.

“Our advance was facilitated by the US-led coalition’s airstrikes on ISIS positions in Yahmoul,” the Levant Front spokesman Salih al-Zein told ARA News.

“After liberating the town [Yahmoul] from ISIS terrorists, we found the corpses of over 25 ISIS fighters, some of them were killed in the clashes while others were apparently killed under airstrikes on Friday evening,” Zein said.

The rebel official told ARA News that ISIS withdrew from the eastern suburbs of Azaz city towards the Jazir village in the northern countryside of Aleppo province.

“They are currently stationed in Jazir and Ahmadiya villages. Our next operation will target those key ISIS bastions in the area,” he said.

The hot fighting fronts of Yahmoul, Jazir and Ahmadiya are located near the Syrian-Turkish borderline, where Turkmen constitute a large proportion of the population.

U.S. air strike kills 16 Nusra Front members east of Idlib
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] A U.S.- led air strike hit a Nusra Front meeting in Abu al-Dhour air base in Idlib province, killing 16 senior members of the al-Qaeda-linked group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and activists said on Friday.

The disused air base had been heavily bombed in the attack, the British-based Observatory said.

In northern Aleppo province, fighters of Aleppo's Operation Room have recaptured Handcart camp and al-Rashideen neighborhood north and west of the war-torn city.

On Thursday, Noor al-Din al-Zinki Movement, in statement posted online, said they killed at least 75 militants from the pro-regime Palestinian al-Quds Brigade this week.

The Observatory said pro-regime forces had launched an attack on Handarat and al-Rashideen, supported by air strikes targeting Handarat in addition to the only road into rebel-held areas of the city.

At least five insurgents were killed in the fighting, according to the Observatory.

Jaish al-Fatah has also thwarted regime forces and allied militias attack on the newly-captured town of Khan Touman, rebel source said on Friday.

Belgium to begin strikes against ISIS in Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Belgium will extend its F-16 air strikes against ISIS forces of Evil in Iraq into Syria, the government said Friday, as it grapples with the aftermath of deadly ISIS-claimed kabooms in Brussels in March.

"In accordance with UN Resolution 2249, the engagement will be limited to those areas of Syria under the control of ISIS and other terrorist groups," a front man for Prime Minister Charles Michel told AFP after a cabinet meeting.

"The objective will be to destroy these groups’ refuges," the front man said, adding that the strikes would begin on July 1.

Belgium launched its first attacks against ISIS in Iraq in late 2014 as part of the US-led coalition, but decided against strikes in Syria amid public fears over getting dragged into a wider conflict.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
the Nov. 13 Gay Paree attacks which left 130 people dead brought home the ISIS threat to the heart of Europe and changed sentiment sharply.

In early March, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said the government was reconsidering its position, as it did not make sense to attack IS in Iraq but not in Syria.

Along with the Netherlands and Denmark, Britannia has also changed tack and launched its first sorties against IS targets in Syria in December.

Michel’s front man did not spell out the reason for the change in policy but it comes as Belgium is still reeling from the ISIS jacket wallah attacks at Brussels airport and on the metro on March 22 which killed 32 people.

The Gay Paree and Brussels attacks have both been linked to the same bad boy cell with links to ISIS in Syria.

In a press statement released yesterday, members of the council stressed that these measures may be amount to war crimes, and expressed deep concern about the violations of the cessation of hostilities established by Security Council resolution 2268.

Members of the Security Council welcomed recent efforts made by the chairmen of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) who affirmed their commitment to the cessation of hostilities which came into effect on the 27th of February in Syria and using their influence to stop hostilities between parties on the ground. The chairmen also urged parties “to abide by the ceasefire, refrain from disproportionate responses to provocations and exercise restraint”.

Council members also noted that all obligations set out by international humanitarian law must be respected under all circumstances by all parties, and highlighted the need to distinguish between the civilian population and fighters. They also warned against indiscriminate attacks on civilians and amenities.

The members of the Council also called on all parties to immediately implement all terms of the Security Council resolutions concerning Syria, including resolutions 2139, 2165, 2191, 2258 and 2286 which is related to health care in armed conflicts. In addition to this, they emphasised the fact that the Syrian government’s primary responsibility was to protect the people of Syria and added “that parties to armed conflict bear the primary responsibility to take all possible steps to ensure that civilians are protected”.

Terror Networks
Beatings will continue: Iraq and Syria Edition
[ARA News] ERBIL – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) have forced a number of civilians in Mosul to take part in executing hostages from the Iraqi security forces, eyewitnesses and local activists reported.

“Islamic State’s jihadis brought five hostages from the Iraqi security forces to the Bab al-Toub square in central Mosul to execute them in public on Thursday,” media activist Abdulla al-Malla told ARA News in Mosul.

“The group then asked for volunteers from the audience to participate in the execution of the hostages, who were described by ISIS as ‘apostates’ and ‘enemies of the Caliphate’,” the source continued. “When nobody volunteered to help the militants in the execution, the group chose five men from the public and forced them to shoot the hostages in the head.”

Speaking to ARA News, head of the Nineveh media center Raafat al-Zarari said that ISIS is trying to involve innocent civilians in its brutal acts in order to support its propaganda.

“By showing civilians as partners in executing what the group considers as apostates and enemies, ISIS is actually trying to show that it still has a social incubator in Mosul and that people are supporting the group’s alleged Caliphate,” Zarari said.

More than one million and a half of civilians are still stranded in the ISIS-held city of Mosul in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, according to local activists.

ISIS Snipers fire on refugees leaving Fallujah

ISIS snipers are targeting humanitarian corridors established by Iraqi security forces to relieve suffering in the ISIS-held city of Fallujah, a Pentagon official said Friday.

Baghdad-based military spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said the shooters were preventing residents from escaping Fallujah, which is only about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Baghdad and is facing major shortages of basic supplies including medicine.

“We know that the Iraqis have attempted on several occasions to open up humanitarian corridors to allow some of those civilians to come out,” Warren told Pentagon reporters in a video call.

“Those have met with generally not much success. ISIL has done things like set up snipers to cover down on those corridors, to kill people as they're trying to get out. So that has really discouraged their use,” he added, using an acronym for ISIS.

Warren later said Iraqi forces had tried to set up three corridors, but these have been all but abandoned because of the snipers.

“Word must have spread because no civilians have tried to use the corridors in the last few weeks,” he said.

Anti-government fighters took control of Fallujah in early 2014 during unrest that broke out after security forces demolished a protest camp farther west, and it later became an ISIS stronghold.

Warren said Iraqi security forces now “generally” surround Fallujah and have begun to slowly “chip away” at it.

“This is the very first city that ISIL gained control of,” he said.

“ISIL’s been there for more than two years, so they are dug in and dug in deep. This is a tough nut for us to crack here. This is a tough nut for the Iraqis to crack.”

US forces are training and advising Iraqi partners as they try to repel ISIS jihadists from the country.

The Pentagon says the ISIS group is losing ground, and the jihadists have suffered major defeats in Iraq, including the loss of the cities of Heet and Ramadi.

But they remain in control of Iraq’s second-largest city Mosul and it is not clear when Iraqi troops will mount an assault to retake it.

Warren said there was no “no military reason” for Iraqi forces to liberate Fallujah before they could tackle Mosul.

About half of Iraq’s security forces are focused on protecting Baghdad, where IS fighters claimed responsibility for a string of suicide attacks this week.

At least 94 people were killed in three blasts in Baghdad on Wednesday, the deadliest day in the Iraqi capital this year.

al-Nusra fighters kill 19 civilians in Hama

Al-Qaeda fighters and their allies shot dead 19 civilians from President Bashar al-Assad’s Alawite minority in their own homes after seizing their village in central Syria, a monitor said Friday.

Other villagers were kidnapped following the assault in which eight pro-regime militiamen were killed trying to defend Al-Zara in Hama province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

“During the attack, they entered houses and opened fire on families, killing at least 19 civilians, including six women,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

State news agency SANA condemned the “massacre” of villagers in Hama, which like neighboring Homs province is mainly Sunni but has a significant Alawite minority.

“Terrorist groups infiltrated Al-Zara and carried out a massacre as well as destruction and pillage,” it reported.

The five-year civil war in Syria has enflamed sectarian resentment between the country’s Sunni majority and the Alawite minority that is the main prop of the Assad regime.

The Alawites -- followers of an offshoot of Shiite Islam who are mainly concentrated in the Mediterranean coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus -- are despised as heretics by the Sunni extremists of Al-Qaeda.

Eight PKK suspects detained over Istanbul car-bomb attack
[Hurriyet Daily News] Eight suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have been detained in an operation launched after a bomb attack in Istanbul’s Sancaktepe district. Eight people, of whom five were soldiers, were injured when a bomb-laden car was detonated near a military post in Sancaktepe on May 12.

One of the detained suspects, identified as İ.İ., was the person who allegedly parked and detonated the car bomb, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

After the attack anti-terror police officers launched a simultaneous operation on 70 different addresses in Istanbul.

The interrogations of the detained suspects were ongoing and the number of detentions could reportedly increase.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin said the explosion inside the parked car occurred at around 4:45 p.m., shortly after a shuttle bus carrying military personnel departed from the İsmail Hakkı Tunaboyu military post.

A number of buildings and shops near the military post were damaged by the explosion. The front of the shuttle bus was also damaged by shrapnel from the bomb-laden car.

120,000 Palestinian 3rd, 4th generation refugees flee Syria during war
Nearly 120,000 Palestinian third and fourth generation refugees have left Syria as a result of the long-lasting war, the head of the UN agency for Palestine refugees said on Thursday.

Before the war, there were 560,000 third and fourth generation Palestinian refugees in Syria, but as the war continued, between 110,000 to 120,000 vamoosed left the country, said Pierre Krahenbuhl, the commissioner general of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Xinhua reported.

Krahenbuhl said 45,000 Palestinians had left Syria for Lebanon, 15,000 for Jordan, half of the overall number for Europe via Turkey, and the rest for countries in Asia and Latin America.

Regarding the perpetual UNRWA efforts, Krahenbuhl said the situation of the people in the Palestinian camp of Yarmouk, south of Damascus, is always still desperate, noting that the aid efforts to Palestinian refugees in areas near Yarmouk have recently improved.

He noted that the UNRWA has concentrated on giving aid to the neighbourhoods near Yarmouk camp.

The Yarmouk camp is a large district in southern Damascus. It has recently become a stage of intense battles between the Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and the Daesh group.

A total of six soldiers were killed in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) while two pilots died as a military helicopter which was dispatched to pursue militants crashed in the eastern province of Hakkari early on May 13.

Meanwhile, a ninth soldier died in eastern Thrace when a military vehicle rolled down a hill.

Six soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded as clashes erupted between security forces and PKK militants at the Çığlı base in Hakkari’s Çukurca district at around 4:50 a.m. on May 13. A helicopter was sent to the area to intervene against the militants but the helicopter crashed at around 5:50 a.m. due to an unknown technical problem.

The General Chief of Staff released a statement on the incidents, noting that both pilots had died in the crash. An air-borne operation was launched to apprehend the militants, the statement said, adding that six PKK militants had been killed so far.

A ninth soldier was killed in the Kaynarca town of Kırklareli’s Pınarhisar district as a military vehicle rolled down a hill for an unknown reason during a military exercise.

In a separate incident in the southeastern province of Siirt, police forces and gendarmerie officials seized a bomb-laden car and two PKK militants late on May 12. According to security sources, gendarmerie teams attempted to stop two “suspicious” automobiles in Siirt’s Baykan district but had to chase the suspects as they ignored the warning and fled the scene.

The vehicles were finally stopped near Çaykaya village where two militants were killed in the ensuing clashes and a soldier was wounded. Some 200 kilograms of improvised explosive devices were found in one of the vehicles.

In anti-terror operations in neighboring Şırnak province, a total 15 PKK militants were killed over the past day, raising the total number of casualties to 355 since the beginning of the operations on March 14.

[ARA News] ALEPPO – Amnesty International said that armed groups attacking the Kurdish neighbourhood of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo since February have killed at least 83 civilians, and called on Turkey, Gulf states and others to stop the transfer of arms to the Aleppo Conquest operations room–an umbrella for Syrian Islamist rebels.

“Armed groups surrounding the Sheikh Maqsoud district of Aleppo city have repeatedly carried out indiscriminate attacks that have struck civilian homes, streets, markets and mosques, killing and injuring civilians and displaying a shameful disregard for human life,” Amnesty said on Friday.

The organization has gathered strong evidence of serious violations from eyewitnesses, and obtained the names of at least 83 civilians, including 30 children, who were killed by attacks in Sheikh Maqsoud between February and April 2016.

Yemeni forces ‘captured 250 Qaeda’ after city retaken
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Yemeni government forces have captured around 250 "al-Qaeda members" since they retook Mukalla, the largest city in the country’s southeast, last month, a top officer said on Friday.

"One of these chiefs, Mohammed Saleh al-Orabi who calls himself the emir of Shar, was detained on Thursday" in the area of the same name some 60 kilometres (35 miles) east of Mukalla, he added.

All of the arrests were made in Mukalla and its surroundings, the general said.

Flt logs show Slick flew on sex offender's jet much more than previously known
[FOX] Former President Bill Clinton was a much more frequent flyer on a registered sex offender’s infamous jet than previously reported, with flight logs showing the former president taking at least 26 trips aboard the "Lolita Express" -- even apparently ditching his Secret Service detail for at least five of the flights, according to records obtained by FoxNews.com.
Maybe he was being chaperoned by Julie Tauber McMahon...
Clinton’s presence aboard Jeffrey Epstein’s Boeing 727 on 11 occasions has been reported, but flight logs show the number is more than double that, and trips between 2001 and 2003 included extended junkets around the world with Epstein and fellow passengers identified on manifests by their initials or first names, including "Tatiana." The tricked-out jet earned its Nabakov-inspired nickname because it was reportedly outfitted with a bed where passengers had group sex with young girls.

"Bill Clinton ... associated with a man like Jeffrey Epstein, who everyone in New York, certainly within his inner circles, knows is a pedophile," said Conchita Sarnoff, of the Washington, D.C. based non-profit Alliance to Rescue Victims of Trafficking, and author of an upcoming book on the Epstein case called "TrafficKing." Bosnian Police Seize Arms Headed for Sweden
[AnNahar] Bosnian police said Friday they had nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
five suspected smugglers and seized arms including rocket launchers destined for Sweden, but declined to confirm reports it was for an Islamist group.

The five were seized Thursday in an operation carried out in coordination with Swedish police, Bosnian police spokeswoman Mirna Miljanovic told AFP.

"A huge quantity of arms, ammunitions and military equipment was seized," Miljanovic said, adding that one person was earlier arrested in Sweden, and two others were still on the lam.

The search was conducted at seven locations in the northern Bosnian towns of Gradiska and Laktasi, he said, giving no further details.

The suspects have admitted involvement in smuggling, Boris Grubesic, a front man for Bosnia's prosecutor office told AFP.

But he said there was no evidence so far that they had links with terrorist groups, and they do not fit a jihadist profile.

A police source who asked not to be named said however there were some indications the arms were destined for a group called the Muslim Brothers. The link with Islamists was "not official," the source said, giving no other details of the group, whose name is similar to the Egypt's opposition movement the Moslem Brüderbund.
Good to know, however unofficially.
Local media said the arms included four rocket launchers, 16 hand grenades and one sub machine gun, as well as rifles, pistols and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Following the 1990s wars in the Balkans, arms from the region have been easily available to criminal groups from Western Europe.

They have also been used by jihadists, including the commandos in the Gay Paree attacks last November which killed 130 people in the French capital.

Rebels kill at least 75 Quds Brigade militants north of Aleppo
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Two rebel factions said they have killed at least 75 militants from the pro-regime Palestinian al-Quds Brigade north of Aleppo province this week.

Noor al-Din al-Zinki Movement, in statement posted online, said it had killed at least 30 Quds militia militants early Thursday while 46 more militants were killed during the week in the countryside of Aleppo.

Regime forces battled rebels north of Aleppo on Thursday as a ceasefire expired in the city itself, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and rebel sources told Reuters.

The fighting was focused around the rebel-held Handarat area which is important because it is near the last route into opposition-held areas of Aleppo, Syria's biggest city before the conflict and now divided between the government and rebels.

The Observatory said pro-government forces had launched an attack in the area, supported by air strikes targeting Handarat in addition to the only road into rebel-held areas of the city.

At least five insurgents were killed in the fighting, the British-based Observatory said.

In a southern district of Aleppo city, insurgent sniper fire killed three people, the Observatory said. State news agency SANA said gunfire had killed at least two people.

The 48-hour truce in the city of Aleppo announced by the Syrian military on Monday ended at 1 a.m. (6 p.m. ET).

The Chadian was arrested Friday in a safe house in the northern city of Tangiers. The Interior Ministry statement did not identify him.

It said the suspect flew to Morocco from Chad on May 4, landing at the Casablanca airport. It said he had a mandate from IS to organize a terror cell comprised of Moroccans and Algerians to attack Western diplomatic buildings and tourist sites.

It compared the scope of the threat to the simultaneous bombings in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, that killed 33 people.

Afghanistan
Several rockets fired on Rassoul Sayyaf’s residence, no casualties reported
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Militants fired several rockets on the residence of Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf earlier this evening in Paghman district of Kabul.

Sources close to Sayyaf have confirmed the incident but did not elaborate further on how many rockets were fired on his residence.

The sources confirmed that no there were no casualties in the attack, calling it a move by the terrorists and criminal gangs.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the attack which comes nearly eight the militants fired several rockets on Sayyaf’s residence.

Sayyaf is one of the most influential jihadi leaders and has been harshly criticizing the Taliban group for their insurgency activities.

Reaffirming his hard stance against the insurgent groups, Sayyaf called on militant groups last month to end slavery for the outsiders.

Sayyaf was speaking during a gathering to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Mujahideen’s victory against the former Soviet-backed regime.

Sayyaf said the militant and terrorist groups fighting in the country should not brand their insurgency as Jihad, insisting that killing of children, women, destroying houses and committing other horrific crimes are not a holy war.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Is World War 1 Too Hot to Touch for Gaming?
The new trailer for Battlefield 1 (the counterintuitive sequel to Battlefield 4) was released this week to overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was so well liked, in fact, that it garnered the distinction of being the most popular trailer in YouTube history.

But while players were stoked for a game set in World War 1, a setting rarely touched by the genre, culture critics in the media and on Twitter found it in poor taste. After decades of ultra-violent video games depicting all sorts of travesties, apparently WW1 is the line in the sand for some critics.

Guardian writer Alex Hern asks if it’s wrong to set a war game in the trenches of WW1, before answering it with an implied yes. “Asking whether the first world war is an appropriate topic for a first-person shooter may reveal a more pressing question: why do we think any war is?” Hern says.

“A game set in the Great War will necessarily whitewash the horrors of trench warfare. Even when games do tenderly address these subjects, they rarely do so through the medium of 64v64 class-based combat.”
Boy howdy, good thing that WWII was less gory than WWI, huh Mr. Hern...
Hern seems to let on that he does not actually like war games, a genre people usually play not to learn the nuances of war but for entertainment. Yes, it will be impossible to realistically portray trench warfare in a multiplayer game. There’s not the player density to pin each side down in their trench, with certain death for those stuck in no man’s land. The players will not be able to organize coordinated charges without a leadership structure. Twenty-minute match times aren’t enough to develop trench foot.

But that doesn’t mean some version of the war should not be translated into a game.

While Battlefield 1 will partially take place in the trenches, its developers made a point to include many variant fronts in the war. The Italian Alps, Arabian desserts and the forests of the Eastern Front will lend themselves better to the fast pace of multiplayer.

Wired’s Jake Muncy had similar reservations. “This might sound like an exciting new frontier for the genre, but there’s a reason WW1 has long been no-man’s land for developers: It was a quagmire of death and disease that turned strategy into slaughter, with no handy narrative of heroism to layer gameplay atop.”

Where was Muncy during the launch of the thousands of Vietnam games? While the carnage and death tolls of the two wars don’t compare, it’s not the first time games have been set in pointlessly destructive wars. Besides World War 2, most modern wars were quagmires. We didn’t see people tiptoeing around video game depictions of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Probably the most naval-gazing criticism came from radical SJW Jonathan McIntosh. You may know him as the guy who led a Twitter mob after Joss Whedon, causing the director to quit Twitter for the crime of putting a Black Widow-Hulk love plot in Avengers 2.

“Everybody about WW1 was horrific, brutal and tragic,” he writes. But that’s true of most wars. So is hell for that matter, the setting for the popular Doom franchise. That does not mean it won’t make a good video game.

In a long Twitter screed, McIntosh even parroted ’90s fears of violent video games leading to real life violence. He took an argument straight from Jack Thompson, a Florida lawyer who spent his career in a losing battle against “amoral” video games until he was disbarred for misconduct.

The problem with these critics assumptions about Battlefield 1 is they treat a game as some definitive source of knowledge regarding the war. Obviously it won’t perfectly capture how terrible it felt to be bombed to hell inside a trench just like FIFA doesn’t teach you how it feels to win a World Cup.

If I want to learn about the war, I’ll watch a Ken Burns documentary. If I want to dogfight in biplanes, flamethrower some Germans and run over people in antiquated tanks, I’ll play me some Battlefield 1.

Economy
Baltic index flat, rates for bigger vessels rise
The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, remained unchanged on Thursday, even as rates for capesize and panamax vessels rose.

The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was flat at 579 points.
The capesize index rose 11 points to 724 points.

Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were up $31 to $5,552.

Freight rates for large capesize dry cargo ships on key Asian routes are set to hold around the current levels next week, after having slipped to multi-week lows this week, as higher fuel prices provide support in a lackluster cargo market, ship brokers said on Thursday.
The panamax index rose six points to 589 points.

Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, increased $49 to $4,709.

Among smaller vessels, the handysize index slid two points to 347 points and the supramax index was down five points at 555 points.

Bulk shipping falters as commodities stumble
Color charts at the link
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) has been notoriously volatile this year. After touching an all-time low of 290 points on 10 February, the index shot up to 715 on 27 April. But, since then, it has declined 17% till 10 May (see chart).

What gives? For one, the drop to the lowest level in the index, which tracks transport costs on international trade routes for dry bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore, was overdone. Two, the Chinese stimulus held out hopes of higher demand for commodities, especially steel and iron ore. But higher iron ore inventories at Chinese ports could well weigh on demand in the coming days and reflect in the index performance. In any case, there were doubts on the sustainability of either the commodity rally or BDI’s increase to begin with. Also, it’s important to note that despite the rise from the pits, the rates are not profitable.

The current levels of BDI are still way below the break-even levels of 2000, wrote analysts from ICICI Securities Ltd in a note on 9 May. “As metal prices recover, scrapping volumes for the first four months were at 17 million DWT compared to 42 million DWT in CY15,” pointed out the report. Importantly, “with the current order book estimated at ~20% of the existing fleet size, scrapping needs to continue to keep these BDI rates sustained,” added ICICI Securities. DWT refers to deadweight tonnage and measures the carrying capacity of a ship.

Oversupply of ships and subdued global trade has been a plague for the shipping industry. Container shipping indices too have suffered. The Shanghai (Export) Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), which reflects spot rates for container transport from Shanghai to the rest of the world, and the China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI), a broader measure tracking spot and contractual rates from China to the rest of the world, have declined from the beginning of this year. Global container demand is estimated to have grown around 1% during the March quarter, while the global container fleet grew by more than 7%, according to a recent Maersk Group presentation.

Dharmakirti Joshi, chief economist, Crisil Ltd, said China is facing rough weather as far as exports are concerned and the country’s trade linkage with the rest of world has definitely weakened. “The way China used to export earlier I don’t think that will happen in future as the country slowly phases out its low value added products from trade activity and rebalances its economy towards consumption from investment/export led growth,” added Joshi. Add to that, subdued demand from other economies too is expected to weigh on global trade. Simply put, if trade does not expand faster, the shipping industry will bear the brunt.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Detains Four Crimean Tatars over 'Terrorism'
[AnNahar] Russia on Thursday detained four Crimean Tatars, a group opposed to Moscow's annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine, on suspicion of belonging to radical Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
, lawyers and prosecutors said.

Since it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, Russia has cracked down on the peninsula's Muslim Tatar community with frequent house searches, arrests and closures of independent media and has banned the group's governing body.

Hizbut Tahrir (Party of Liberation) seeks to re-establish a Caliphate -- a pan-Islamic state based on Islamic rule harking back to medieval times -- and has been banned in Russia since 2003.

Rights lawyer Emil Kurbedinov told AFP that on Thursday morning two busloads of armed officers swept into the town of Bakhchysaray, Crimea's ancient capital, and searched five homes and a cafe.

The FSB officers detained four Crimean Tatars and took them to the security force's headquarters, the lawyer said. He added that the men were likely to be formally placed in durance vile
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in jug on Friday.

"I see this as real repression," Kurbedinov said.

Crimea's fiercely pro-Kremlin chief prosecutor Natalia Poklonskaya said on Facebook that the FSB had arrested three suspected participants and one organizer of a local cell of Islamist Hizbut Tahrir party, outlawed in Russia as a terrorist organization.

She accused the men of carrying out "hidden anti-constitutional activity through carrying out propaganda among the public."

The suspected organizer of the "terrorist cell" faces up to 20 years in jail, while participants face up to 10 years.

Poklonskaya told Russian news agencies that the FSB had also summoned a prominent Crimean-Tatar community leader, Ilmi Umerov, for questioning on suspicion of making "public calls to breach Russia's territorial integrity."

Umerov was a longtime head of the Bakhchysaray district who quit when it moved under Moscow's control.

Crimean prosecutors on Thursday also announced that U.S.-funded Russia Free Europe/Radio Liberty's website, which carries news and views on Crimea, has been blocked in Russia as Death Eater.

Prosecutors have already opened a criminal probe into the site for alleged Death Eater activities, saying it aimed to "discredit the activities of Russia in Crimea."

"This is an aggressive act," RFE /RL's editor-in-chief Nenad Pejic said in a statement.

He accused Russia of using the "outrageous pretext of extremism" to "censor RFE/RL and prevent the audience in Russia and Crimea from learning the truth about the annexation."

This Week in Guns, May 14th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Hershel Smith continues last week's discussion on following orders, with this instance on law enforcement. He thinks, and I agree, that most police and military would obey illegal orders, and would fire on civilians.

I read elsewhere that during WWII 85 percent of all riflemen the US deployed would not even fire their weapons at the enemy. That is an amazing statistic. I gather from that discussion that the other 15 percent would willingly fire their weapons and wound or kill an enemy in battle.

In the article today on wargames' treatment of WWI, it is said that that ratio is reversed primarily because of first person shooter (FPS) games, such as the Call of Duty series and Arma III. According to that article, shooting and killing an individual in FPS wargames has desensitized American riflemen to doing so in real life.

...

In Oklahoma City we have the case of a local attorney who shot and seriously wounded another individual in what is being touted as a bar fight Thursday night. The bar in question is a disco with a 1980s theme, meaning lots of old fellas and young girls in their 40s. The attorney, identified as Jay Silvernail went to his vehicle, retrieved a gun and shot another individual. A third party who was carrying a firearm, according to the early reports held Silvernail at gunpoint until the kops arrived.

Silvernail shot a client of his last year, but was neither jailed nor charged in that incident.

Now, let me posit that Silvernail despite all the justifications in the linked article has zero business firing his firearm on another individual. Until his gun came into play, there was no threat from a firearm, nor was there a threat to him personally. Acting in place of police he could have, as the third party eventually did to Silvernail, held the victim at gunpoint, but he didn't do that. He shot him.

Read the article to see if you agree.

And I got $20 that says he walks on this.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition were mixed on the minus side. Prices for rifle ammunition were mixed.

Prices for both used pistols were mixed, while prices for used rifles were lower across the board.

Note: The previous two week long price spike for AR-10 semiautomatic rifles was arrested this week as prices moderated in Texas and Florida.

#1  during WWII 85 percent of all riflemen the US deployed would not even fire their weapons at the enemy. That is an amazing statistic.

U.S. infantry all divisions were labeled by the Nazi commanders as shock troops. Japanese Imperial commanders ordered decimated units to attack U.S. lines ferociously and suicidal in bonsai assaults and were cut to pieces.

I asked one veteran how many of the enemy his unit killed on various missions and he looked at me like I was crazy for asking such a question and responded "ALL OF THEM!".

Infantry was so on the edge at times they accidentally shot their own people. You were not to leave your fox hole from dusk to dawn as anyone crawling around out there in the dark would be cut to pieces.

End of Comment.

#3  I read elsewhere that during WWII 85 percent of all riflemen the US deployed would not even fire their weapons at the enemy. That is an amazing statistic. I gather from that discussion that the other 15 percent would willingly fire their weapons and wound or kill an enemy in battle.

(I'd post the links to Amazon, but my two prior attempts with links failed)

The author is S.L.A. Marshall. The book is Men Against Fire.

It's an airborne unit deployed on line to cover their front near Normandy. The men are individually separated by 10 feet and the attack is at night.

However, he would follow up with a study in Korea, Infantry Operations Weapons Usage in Korea in which he recorded a significant increase in firing. Tactical doctrine and emphasized had changed. Men were paired up (you may not shoot to save your own life, but you will to protect your those of your 'hunting group'). Officers and NCOs were directing fire, as in smack them in the back to the helmet if necessary and point to where the individual should shoot.

2 suspected militants shot dead near Tunis
TUNIS: Two suspected militants were killed on Wednesday during a security operation near the Tunisian capital against a cell planning “simultaneous” attacks, the Interior Ministry said.

Sixteen others were arrested during the operation in Ariana province just outside Tunis, and Kalashnikov assault rifles, pistols and ammunition were seized, it said.

The ministry said the suspects had gathered in the area from different parts of the country “to prepare simultaneous terrorist operations.”

A resident of the Sanhaji district told AFP that a two-hour gunbattle erupted with the suspects after the national guard launched the raid at around 8 a.m. (0700 GMT).

“They were not from the neighborhood. We didn’t know them. They rented the house recently,” she said.

Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring, has suffered from a wave of militant violence since its 2011 revolution that ousted former ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Daesh claimed brazen attacks last year on the National Bardo Museum in Tunis and a beach resort near Sousse that killed a total of 60 people, all but one of them foreign tourists.

A November suicide bombing in the capital, also claimed by Daesh, killed 12 presidential guards and prompted the authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Thousands of Tunisians have joined militant groups in conflict zones such as Iraq, Syria and Libya over the past few years.

Home Front: WoT
Al Qaeda leader urged trainee to target Israelis, Americans
[IsraelTimes] Slain US citizen-turned-jihadist Anwar al-Awlaki was not only a chief propagandist but also a hands-on bomb-making instructor, according to NY court documents

An al-Qaeda operative facing sentencing in a New York court next week said bomb-making instructor Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
had encouraged him to target Israeli and US nationals at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Before his death in a 2011 drone strike in Yemen, the US-born al-Awlaki had emerged as an influential preacher among jihadists living in the West, with his English-language internet sermons calling for jihad, or holy war, against the US.

Al-Awlaki was the first American citizen whose killing by drone strike without trial was approved by US President Barack Obama

Minh Quang Pham, a Vietnamese-British man who converted to Islam before joining al-Qaeda, said al-Awlaki urged him to use his bombs against Americans and Israelis, according to documents submitted to the court and reported upon by the New York Times

this week.

Pham has pleaded guilty to three terror-related charges. He will be sentenced on Monday.

He told Sherlocks of his meetings with al-Awlaki, who he called the most senior al-Qaeda figure in Yemen.

The Times noted that many critics of Obama’s policy have claimed al-Awlaki was a public figure but not active on the operational level. Pham’s testimony appeared to indicate otherwise.

Pham recalled training sessions with al-Awlaki, where the terrorist instructed him on how to synthesize explosives and how to construct bombs to create the most collateral damage.

When his training was completed, Pham was given $10,000 by al-Awlaki and told to carry out an attack at London’s Heathrow Airport. He specifically told him to target arrivals from the US or Israel, according to the report.

After returning to Britannia, Pham had a change of heart and left the organization, abandoning the attack plans. Al-Awlaki’s influence has also been cited in other attacks, such as the Boston marathon bombings and the Charlie Hebdo

Armed Men Rape Woman in Baghlan
Armed men have reportedly raped a woman in Guzargah-e-Noor district of northern Baghlan province after beating her husband, officials reported.

The victim has asked for justice to be served, but said that the police department in the district did not take action against the perpetrators when she reported the incident.

Meanwhile, district police headquarters officials said that the security forces have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the rape case.

The victim was on her way home from Takhar province when the armed men opened fire on the car they were heading home in. Her husband was injured in the shooting. The men then allegedly raped the woman.

"They beat me and snatched my scarf, they took me into the car and tied my mouth and hands," the victim said.

Meanwhile, family members of the victim have asked the government to arrest the criminals and bring them to justice.

"I ask the president of Afghanistan to provide us justice," the victim's husband said.

Baghlan police have pledged to expand operations and arrest the criminals.

Syrian rebels drive ISIS from Hasakah
[ARA News] HASAKAH – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) recaptured a main town south of Hasakah province in northeastern Syria after clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), military sources reported on Friday.

The SDF regained control of the Kishkish town near Shaddadi city in the southern countryside of Hasakah.

“Subsequent to fierce clashes with Daesh terrorists, our forces were able to liberate Kishkish town,” a spokesman for the SDF told ARA News in Hasakah, using an acronym for ISIS.

At least seven ISIS militants were killed in Friday’s clashes, while the SDF lost two of its fighters before pushing ISIS out of the town, according to the spokesman.

The Kishkish town has been used by ISIS as a supply route to launch its military operations against the Kurdish-led SDF troops in Hasakah province, especially after losing the key city of Shaddadi which used to be a main bastion for ISIS in northeastern Syria.

Also on Friday, the US-led coalition launched several airstrikes in northeastern Syria, hitting ISIS fighting positions and heavy weapons in the Ziyarat and Humera villages in Hasakah province.

The SDF units include Kurdish, Arab and Christian fighters –mainly supported by the United States in the war on ISIS.

The SDF military campaign in northeastern Syria aims to control the entire countryside of Hasakah province, especially after recapturing key areas from ISIS, including Shaddadi and the town of al-Hawl on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

More than 275 ISIS militants were killed and 33 ISIS vehicles were destroyed at the hands of the SDF fighters in the battle for Shaddadi, according to the SDF leadership.

“Our operations will continue until we regain the entire region from ISIS,” the SDF leadership said in a statement.

Russian military losses in Syria continue despite withdrawals
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Russia on Thursday buried its eighth serviceman officially acknowledged to have been killed in its military campaign in Syria, suggesting as many have died in combat since the Kremlin announced a partial pullout as before the March announcement.

Moscow has continued sending military hardware to Syria, according to a Reuters analysis of shipping and aircraft data, and its capability is roughly the same as before it announced the drawdown.

Since mid-March, when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the bulk of the contingent in Syria to withdraw, Moscow has acknowledged the loss of four soldiers in combat, the same number as in the previous five months of the campaign.

The latest officially acknowledged casualty of the campaign was a signaler called Anton Yerygin who died on May 7, according to Interfax news agency,

"Yerygin was badly wounded as a result of shelling by militants while he was on assignment accompanying cars of the Russian ceasefire monitoring center," Interfax quoted a spokesman at Russia's Hmeimim air base in Syria as saying late on Wednesday.

Yerygin left for Syria on April 3, two weeks after the declared withdrawal, local website RIA Voronezh reported from his hometown, in central Russia.

"Anton texted or called his mother every day. But then the connection was lost with him," Sofia Zhenova, a colleague of Yerygin's mother, was quoted as saying by the website.
Try an Ouija board...
In late March, Syrian forces with Russian support recaptured the ancient Palmyra from radical Sunni group Islamic State.

The total official death toll among Russia's military is nine, but only eight of those were combat deaths. One serviceman committed suicide at an air base in Syria's Latakia province in October, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Clinton charity arranged $2M pledge to firm owned by Bill’s ‘friend’
Bill Clinton’s foundation arranged a $2 million pledge to a power company partly owned by a wealthy blond divorcée — who some say is the frequent visitor to his home nicknamed “Energizer.”
Pay careful attention to the posted images, and see if you can figure out what Bill is pondering...
The “commitment” to Julie Tauber McMahon’s firm from the Clinton Global Initiative was placed on its 2010 conference agenda at Clinton’s urging, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
From pics around the web, you'll see that Ms. McMahon's bazooms are so small that they look like melons...
The initiative “commits $2 million to support the work of Energy Pioneer Solutions, a company founded to deliver energy savings to communities in rural America,” said a 2010 statement from the charity.
Crooked Hillary and Bent Bill...
Clinton even went to bat for the company when it came to lobbying for federal funds. He helped steer an $812,000 federal grant to it by endorsing the funds via then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu, the Journal said.
Kathleen Willey simply didn't play her cards as well as she might...
McMahon owns 29 percent of Energy Pioneer Solutions, which was given the money to make people’s homes more energy-efficient.
Which homes? I'll bet if you checked the books there would be no homes...
The buxom fit, blond mother of three, who lives just minutes from Bill and Hillary Clinton’s home in Chappaqua, Westchester,
Met at the block party?
is the daughter of Joel Tauber, a millionaire donor to the Democratic Party.
She really does have all the attributes Bill looks for in a 'business partner'. Blonde, wealthy, available, and likely can suck a golf ball through a garden hose...
McMahon, 54, is rumored to be the woman dubbed “Energizer” by the Secret Service at the Clinton home because of her frequent visits, according to RadarOnline.
Ahhh, I don't think that's why the Secret Service boys gave her that nickname, if you know what I mean and I think you do...
Secret Service agents were even given special instructions to abandon usual protocol when the woman came by, according to journalist Ronald Kessler’s tell-all book, “The First Family Detail.”
Clearly Bill has joined the #NeverHillary crowd...
“You don’t stop her, you don’t approach her, you just let her go in,” says the book, based on agents’ accounts.
"You were permitted, however, to watch the show."
“Energizer” is described in the book as a charming visitor with large ta-ta's who sometimes brought cookies to the agents.
I'm afraid, given the reputation the Secret Service has had these last few years, to ask exactly what kind of 'cookies'...
The book describes one sun-drenched afternoon when agents
"Hot DAHMN, Tyrone! Energizer's got a nice bounce today!"
"You betcha, Darryl, and look at the cookies she brought!"
"Not her cookie Tyrone, these cookies!"
took notice of the woman’s revealing attire.
Oh, I'll bet they took notice every day, and had every reason to...
“It was a warm day, and she was wearing a low-cut tank top, and as she leaned over, her breasts were very exposed,” an agent is quoted in the book as saying. “They appeared to be very perky and very new and full … There was no doubt in my mind they were enhanced.”
The only thing 'perking' at her age is her koffee pot.
And if you can't believe the observations of a trained Secret Service observer, who can you believe?
“Energizer” reportedly timed her arrivals and departures around Hillary Clinton’s schedule.
Hillary's electronic security was so-o-o-o lax that even the "Energizer Bunny" could crack her Blackberry...
McMahon has denied in reports having an intimate relationship with Bill Clinton.
Define 'intimate'...
The commitment to McMahon’s company raises red flags for the Clinton Global Initiative.
These are different red flags than Champ's Syria policy, but they'll be as widely ignored...
Other Clinton bagmen friends — including former Democratic congressional candidate Scott Kleeb, Democratic National Committee Treasurer Andrew Tobias and Mark Weiner — share ownership of Energy Pioneer Solutions.
Any updates from DoJ, Director Comey or the Bureau on this? I thought not.
What? No Sid Blumenthal? How did he miss out?
Under federal law, tax-exempt nonprofits like Clinton’s are not supposed to act in anyone’s private interest, the Journal reported. Spokespeople for Bill and Hillary Clinton declined to comment.
Honestly, what are they going to say? Their bosses are classless, rude boors? That Bill looks as if his sexual addiction has finally sucked the life essence out of him? That Hillary feels threatened that her biasexual coattail-hanging political ride is in danger? That's it's not their fault that they work for two sociopaths, and good luck trying to figure out which one is worse?
A foundation spokesperson defended the financial commitment as “a common practice in the broader philanthropic space.”
That might even be true, and it's even more of an indictment...

#1  Actually, there was a system made by the soviets that could "jam" the guidance system on early versions of the TOW missile. (DROZD if I recall correctly)

TOW SACLOS works by tracking a strobe light source on the back of the missile, and sending steering commands down the wires. If the target has a strobe on it blinking at the same rate, it may confuse the SACLOS computer and cause the missile to miss.

I know it was fixed somehow, but I do not recall exactly how.

IDF general: IS fighters training with Hamas in Gaza
[IsraelTimes] Though it is trying to warm up to Cairo, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, also cooperating with jihadists waging insurgency in Sinai, Yoav Mordechai tells Saudi website

Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
fighters have recently arrived in the Gazoo Strip to train with their Hamas counterparts, a senior IDF official said in an Arabic interview published Friday.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai told the Saudi news website Elaph that IS members entered the Gazoo Strip from the Sinai Peninsula through smuggling tunnels maintained and controlled by Hamas.

The fighters entered the Hamas-controlled territory in coordination with Sa’id Abed al-A’al, a resident of the Gazoo Strip city of Rafah connected to Hamas, he said.

Mordechai, the head of the Defense Ministry body responsible for the Israeli border crossings with the Gazoo Strip and Civil Administration in the West Bank, said the military cooperation between the Islamic State and Hamas is unfolding with the full knowledge and consent of Hamas’s leaders.

According to the report, Hamas members have also treated maimed IS bully boyz who entered the Strip from the Sinai Peninsula.

In an effort to help combat the Islamic State in Egypt, the US Embassy in Cairo said Friday that Egypt has received its first shipment of armored vehicles designed to protect soldiers from roadside kabooms.

The embassy said in a statement that the first batch of 762 MRAP (Mine Resistance Ambush Protected) vehicles was delivered Thursday, and is aimed at helping to "combat terrorism and promote stability in the region."

While Hamas "tries to draw closer to Egypt, it’s connecting with the Islamic State and with the Moslem Brüderbund," Mordechai said, referring to the outlawed Islamic party whose president Mohammed Morsi briefly ruled Egypt before being deposed in 2013.

Hamas has apparently tried to distance itself from the Islamic State and Iran with the hope that Cairo would loosen its blockade on the Gazoo Strip. But according to Haaretz, reports pointing to ties between Hamas leaders and terrorist groups operating against Egypt in the Sinai are causing the group embarrassment.

Paleostinian sources quoted by the paper say that while Hamas leaders have adopted a policy of increasing ties with Egypt, there are still bigwigs who are unwilling to break free of Iran and Salafi groups that can also serve as a source of income. Hamas is also under pressure from the Saudi royal family to cut all ties with Iran, Soddy Arabia

US sanctions Libyan official for ‘stalling progress’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The US Treasury Department on Friday sanctioned Aguila Saleh, the president of Libya’s internationally recognized parliament in Tobruk, over what US officials say is his blocking of the formation of a UN-backed government of national accord.

Saleh "is responsible for stalling political progress in Libya. Today’s action sends a clear message that the US Government will continue to target those who undermine the peace, security, and stability of Libya," said John E. Smith, Acting OFAC Director.

The Treasury Department’s action means that "all property and interests in property of Issa that are within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the control of US persons are blocked". It added Americans were "generally prohibited" from carrying out transactions with him.

The statement said Saleh had repeatedly blocked votes by Libya’s House of Representatives to support the North African country’s political transition.

Libya has been in turmoil since the Western-backed uprising that overthrew Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
five years ago.

Two competing governments, one in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and the one in Tobruk, backed by armed factions, have struggled for control of the OPEC state since 2014.

A UN-backed unity government, designed to replace the rival administrations, arrived in Tripoli earlier this year and is attempting to assert authority over the whole country.

The Treasury Department move follows a similar taken by the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
in April against Saleh.

Along with Saleh, the EU in April sanctioned Nouri Abusahmain, president of Libya’s General National Congress in Tripoli and Khalifa al-Ghwell, prime minister of the self-proclaimed Tripoli government.

The EU said the three played a central role in obstructing the establishment of a unity government in Libya, which has become the main conduit for refugees from North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa to leave in boats for Europe.

Hildebeest abandoned secure line to use home phone, new email shows
[The Hill] New emails released by a conservative watchdog group on Thursday appear to show former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton directing a top aide to call her via an unsecured phone line when technical troubles prevented a secure phone conversation.

"I give up. Call me on my home [number]," Clinton told then-chief of staff Cheryl Mills in a February 2009 email after more than an hour of trouble trying to communicate via a secure line.
That would be the same Cheryl Mills who stormed out of an FBI interview last week.
"I just spoke to ops and called you reg line -- we have to wait until we see each other b/c [the] technology is not working," Mills said in another email sent at almost exactly the same time.

"Pls try again," responded Clinton, a few moments later.

It’s unclear whether the two did connect or if they moderated any discussion they may have had to avoid sensitive topics while on an unsecure landline.

But the episode is likely to cause concern among critics of Clinton, who have previously accused her of resorting to unsecure forms of communication out of convenience, potentially jeopardizing sensitive information. Another email of Clinton’s, released in January, appeared to show her telling a top aide to remove identifying details and send a sensitive document through a "nonsecure" channel instead of via "secure fax."

"This drip, drip of new Clinton emails show Hillary Clinton could not care less about the security of her communications," said Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch, in a statement releasing Thursday’s email. "How many other smoking gun emails are Hillary Clinton and her co-conspirators in the Obama administration hiding from the American people?"

for life and told he would spend at least 12 years behind bars.

Junead Khan, 25, was a committed supporter of the IS group and he also idolized Mohammed Emwazi, the late British Lion of Islam nicknamed "Jihadi John", who appeared in a string of IS execution videos.

Khan had used his job as a delivery driver for a pharmaceutical firm as cover to scout U.S. Air Force bases in eastern England between May and July 2015, it emerged during his trial.

"Junead Khan was not far from the commission of the murder to be committed by horrifying method in the street in order to create terror and terrorist propaganda in this country," judge Andrew Edis said as he sentenced him. "His offense was so serious that a life sentence must be imposed."

Khan, from Luton, north of London,
...like Molenbeek, Luton often pops up in reports from England...
had exchanged online messages with an IS fighter in Syria called Abu Hussain, who prosecutors said was a British man, Junaid Hussain.

Hussain was later killed in a U.S. drone strike.

The trial heard how one message described an attack on military personnel, which Khan and Hussain compared to the deadly knife attack by two Islamists on British soldier Lee Rigby in London in 2013.

Khan, who stared straight ahead as he was sentenced, had also been found guilty of preparing to join the IS group in Syria with his uncle, 23-year-old Shazib Khan.

Shazib Khan was given a 13-year sentence, of which he will have to spend at least eight years in jail.

The judge said the two men, who are of Bangladeshi background, were "committed supporters of ISIS (IS), an organization which wishes to control the world and which will stop short of no barbarity in order to do so."

Navy officer fired amid fallout from U.S. sailors' seized by Iran
The head of a riverine squadron at the center of an international incident in January was fired Thursday, the first officer to be publicly disciplined for errors that led to 10 sailors being captured by Iran after getting lost in the Persian Gulf — a debacle that nearly scuttled the U.S.-Iran nuclear deal at the 11th hour.

Cmdr. Eric Rasch, who at the time of the Jan. 12 incident was the executive officer of the Coastal Riverine Squadron 3, was removed from his job by Capt. Gary Leigh, head of Coastal Riverine Group 1, for what a Navy Expeditionary Combat Command release said was “a loss of confidence” in his ability to remain in command.

Cmdr. Gregory Meyer, who was commanding officer at the time of the incident, is currently with Coastal Riverine Group 1, and has been put on “administrative hold,” meaning the Navy will not transfer him out of the unit, while a high-level review of the Navy’s investigation into the incident continues, said two officials familiar with internal deliberations.

The move is the first in what sources expect to be a series of disciplinary measures for what was a high-profile embarrassment for the U.S. Navy. The 10 riverines were captured and their high-speed special mission boats were seized when they drifted into Iranian waters around Farsi Island, a remote Iranian military outpost in the middle of the Persian Gulf. During their 16 hour detention, one of the U.S. sailors appeared to apologize while being videotaped, which became part of the flurry of Iranian propaganda publicized in the wake of the arrests.

The investigation is still under review and is expected to be released by the end of May, said two Navy officials.

Navy officials believe that a navigational error, along with some baffling errors in judgment on the part of the crew, led to their capture. Officials have suggested that the crew may have been taking an unauthorized shortcut through Iranian waters to meet up with a U.S. Coast Guard vessel for refueling.

Rasch has been reassigned temporarily to Riverine Group 1. Capt. Stanfield Chien has assumed command of Riverine Squadron 3 until a replacement is named. There are about 400 sailors in CRS-3.
