Punishing the dead: Army Investigating 'We Were Soldiers' SGM Plumley awards
[Mil.com] The U.S. Army is investigating allegations by a military researcher that the late Command Sgt. Major Basil Plumley -- a legend in the airborne and infantry communities -- wore unauthorized combat and valor awards that exaggerated the wartime achievements that made him famous.

Plumley, who died Oct. 10, 2012 from cancer at the age of 92, was a major figure in the 1992 book, "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young," coauthored by Joseph L. Galloway and retired Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore.

Hillary was midwife to the Trump campaign.
If you're mystified about Trump and the death of outrage and lack of character evidenced in our national political actors, here's what you could do.

Find a dark room with a mirror. Bring with you a small lit candle. Stand before that mirror and spend three minutes in complete silence wondering about the death of outrage, then repeat after me:

"Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton."

If that doesn't work, try one of these: "It's only about sex," or "Everybody does it" or "It's a private matter."
RTWT. It's not that long, and razor sharp.

#4  You miss the point. Commerce with China was and is sold as Free Trade. The point is that Free Trade is like socialist theory. It ignores human behavior to rationalize all the good things and not what actually occurs when put into practice. People cheat for their own interests. Someone gains, someone pays.

#7  Then you believe in theory over reality. Deal with real human nature. RJ does get it. We promote 'workfare' over welfare, but don't grasp the same trade off between employment and imports. We just shift the collection process from higher costs of goods and services to higher cost of government support systems and the massive bureaucracy that goes with it.

The Hilldebeest Might Have Just Made her Worst Mistake Ever
[Powerline] At a campaign stop in Kentucky, Hillary Clinton told the crowd that if she were president, she would put her husband Bill "in charge of revitalizing the economy." The impulse is understandable. The economy of the 1990s was good, or seemed to be prior to the collapse of the dot com bubble.

But Hillary’s promise to bring back Bill and put him "in charge of" the economy is, I think, a horrible blunder. Here’s why.

First, it undermines the entire rationale of Hillary’s candidacy. Donald Trump responded appropriately:

"Crooked Hillary said her husband is going to be in charge of the economy. If so, he should run,not her. Will he bring the "energizer" to D.C.?"

#2  If she puts Bill in charge of the economy she better arrange to get Newt in charge of the House of Representatives to stop Bill from doing anything and the Soviets to come crashing down again so we can re-purpose money previously spent on the military into the economy.

It was the combo of the three that led to the good days during Bill's economy.

#6  Whether that did her campaign any good remains to be seen. As of a few minutes ago she had less than 2,000 more votes than Senator Sanders, with 99% of the count completed. Were I he I'd challenge everything possible, and then demand a recount , especially in those precincts that had more votes than registered voters. On the other hand, that requires a strong local team, not what the Bern! campaign has done well thus far.

#1  Under Erdogan, the known Muslim Brother, Turkey's relationship with the EU and the USA has done an abrupt u-turn. Now, to save the Middle East it is past time for the West to initiate policies to effect a change of government in Turkey. Similar to the change in foreign policy Obama seeks to introduce, Erdogan has worked assiduously to metamorphize Turkey and create a new Caliphate. Because he has had some success, it will take years not months to revive the former entente.

Border Police vehicle hit in West Bank shooting attack
[IsraelTimes] Police say no Israeli troops injured during incident at Qalandiya crossing; security forces searching the area

Shots were fired Tuesday morning at a Border Police vehicle adjacent to the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, according to police.

Bullet holes were discovered in the vehicle after gunfire was heard by security forces at the crossing.

No troops were maimed in the attack, police said. It is not clear if anyone was in the vehicle at the time it was shot.

Security forces were searching the area for the shooter.

Police said were unaware of unconfirmed reports saying the attack targeted a Cypriot military delegation visiting the area Tuesday.

The Paleostinian town of Qalandiya, and the adjacent crossing between the West Bank and Israel, has been a flashpoint of conflict in the recent wave of violence that has rocked the area since September of last year.

As the crossing is located within the Jerusalem city limits, it is under the authority of the police, who guard the site.

in Iraq and Syria on Monday, the coalition leading the operations said.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Combined Joint Task Force said two strikes in Syria hit a tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle near Al Shadaddi and destroyed an artillery piece near Mar'a.

Ten strikes in Iraq, half of them near Qayyarah, struck three headquarters, two tactical units and destroyed fighting positions, a fuel tanker and heavy machine guns among other targets, the statement said.

Europe
Suspect in 1980 Paris synagogue attack freed on bail
[IsraelTimes] Ex-wife of Lebanese-Canadian Hassan Diab says he was in Beirut at the time, though his passport stamps indicate he was in Europe

The chief suspect in a deadly attack on a Gay Paree synagogue in 1980 has been released on bail after being held for 18 months, judicial and investigation sources told AFP Tuesday.

Hassan Diab, 62, is accused of being part of the Special Operations branch of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine (PFLP). The PFLP was blamed for the bombing on October 3, 1980, that left four dead and around 40 injured.

Diab, a Lebanese-Canadian sociology professor, was extradited from Canada in November 2014 and charged with the attack.

The bombing of the synagogue in rue Copernic, western Gay Paree, was the first major attack on a Jewish site in La Belle France since World War II.

But Diab was released on bail on Saturday after a judge ruled there was a doubt on the "fundamental question" of whether he was in La Belle France on the day of the attack.

Diab’s ex-wife told Sherlocks that he was in Beirut on September 28, 1980, despite stamps in his passport indicating that he was already in Europe by that date, a source close to the investigation told AFP.
If it wasn't him, then to whom did he loan his very own precious passport for the duration?
The judge said her statement should be treated with caution but had to be taken into account, the source added.

The Gay Paree prosecutor’s office has appealed the decision.

Diab has been charged with murder, attempted murder and destruction of property as part of a terrorist enterprise.

He has always maintained his innocence and denied being a member of the PFLP.

His lawyer, William Bourdon, said there was "strictly no risk of flight. He will be present for the next hearing before the court of appeal," where he could be returned to jail.

Hugo Chavez's economic miracle
From just three years ago, an opinion piece in Salon
Chavez became the bugaboo of American politics because his full-throated advocacy of socialism and redistributionism at once represented a fundamental critique of neoliberal economics, and also delivered some indisputably positive results. Indeed, as shown by some of the most significant indicators, Chavez racked up an economic record that a legacy-obsessed American president could only dream of achieving.

4 troops injured in Khyber Agency blast
LANDI KOTAL: At least four soldiers were injured in a roadside bomb blast in a remote locality of Khyber Agency on Monday.

Sources said that a patrol party of security forces was on a routine patrol duty in Sandana area, near Nari Baba locality in Bazaar Zakhakhel area, when it was hit by an explosives device planted at the roadside.

The injured soldiers were taken to a military hospital. Security forces started a search operation in the area, but no arrests were made.

The area had remained a battleground between pro-government Tauheed ul Islam and its rival Lashkar-i-Islam some three years ago.

Both groups targeted each other’s supporters by planting landmines in the past, causing human loss to both sides.

Nobody claimed responsibility for Monday’s blast.

Four volunteers of Tauheedul Islam were killed on Friday in the same region in infighting over a petty dispute.

IS Blasts Rock Syria Gas Field
[AnNahar] Powerful blasts rocked a key gas field in central Syria on Monday, with a monitor saying they were caused by the Islamic State

group blowing up pumping stations.

The Shaer gas field -- one of the biggest in the central province of Homs -- has been the site of fierce fighting between IS jihadists and Syrian government loyalists.

"There were three huge kabooms there carried out by IS on Monday," said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Abdel Rahman said IS was believed to have blown up several of Shaer's pumping stations. He had no immediate word on casualties.

The kabooms reportedly even shook Palmyra, the ancient oasis city about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Shaer, according to reports posted on Twitter.

Syria's army recaptured Palmyra from IS on March 27, after about 10 months of jihadist rule over the city.

IS seized the Shaer field last week, but Syrian armed forces and pro-government militias have fought hard to get it back.

Syrian state news agency SANA on Monday evening said government forces had seized a hilltop just west of the field.

The agency did not mention the blasts.

IS has targeted oil and gas facilities in Iraq and Syria to fund its self-proclaimed Islamic "caliphate."

Two skippers and three suspected smugglers were detained on Friday after police discovered the migrants colonists on their sailboat in Brittany on La Belle France's northwest coast.

ISIS has lost nearly half the area it once claimed in Iraq: Pentagon
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] ISIS has continued losing control over territory across Iraq and Syria, a Pentagon front man said Monday, including almost half of what it had once held in Iraq.

The Defense Department had previously estimated that ISIS fighters had lost control of about 40 percent of the territory they claimed in Iraq and about 10 percent of the land they held in Syria.

Those tallies had gone up in recent weeks, Pentagon front man Peter Cook said.

"The number right now in Iraq is about 45 percent of the territory they once held has been recovered," Cook said.

"The number in Syria is anywhere between 16 to 20 percent."

ISIS gunnies stormed across large parts of Iraq and Syria in early 2014, meeting little resistance from Iraqi security forces and exploiting the chaos in civil-war-torn Syria.

Since August 2014, the United States has led an international coalition fighting back against the ISIS group, using a combination of Arclight airstrikes and training and equipping local partners.

ISIS fighters have lost control of Ramadi and Heet in Iraq, but still control other important cities including djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and Fallujah.

In Syria, the group maintains control of Raqa, the capital of their so-called caliphate.

Parliamentarians demand pay raise, more perks
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: Members of the National Assembly have demanded their salaries be increased in accordance with the law, which stipulates that the salary of an MNA be equal to that of a federal secretary.

In a meeting on Monday, a subcommittee of the Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures finalised recommendations for increasing perks and privileges currently offered to MNAs.

Chairing the subcommittee, Shagufta Jumani noted that MNAs and senators were equal in status to a federal secretary and a lieutenant general in the army.

The committee was told that in regards to protocol, the interior ministry had notified on July 6, 1970 that "Members of the Senate/ Members of the National Assembly [are] to take precedence over all others in the said group".

The group referred to is all grade 22 officers in the government.

MNAs and senators are currently paid Rs36,423 per month and after the committee was told that the average federal secretary is paid Rs230,000 per month, participants of the meeting recommended that the basic salary of an MNA and a senator be made equivalent to that of a federal secretary.

The subcommittee also recommended that the monthly perks of a parliamentarian include a Rs50,000 allowance in their constituencies and the same amount for water and electricity bills. The meeting suggested that monthly telephone charges of between Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 per month and road travelling charges be increased from Rs10 to Rs20 per kilometre. Participants said the number of free air tickets be increased from 20 to 30 per year.

12 missing in bomb attack in Diyarbakir
DIYARBAKIR: Turkish authorities were on Monday working to confirm the fates of at least 12 civilians who are missing and feared dead after a huge blast last week blamed on Kurdish rebels in the southeast of the country, reports and official sources said.

The mainly Kurdish region of Diyarbakir was on Thursday night rocked by a massive explosion that was also felt in the city center and was later said to have been caused by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants loading explosives onto a truck.

Four people, all PKK militants, were confirmed by the authorities to have been killed in the blast, which the Interior Ministry said was caused by explosives detonating prematurely. But the local governor’s office later confirmed media reports that 12 citizens were still missing after the immense blast, which left a gigantic crater in the ground.

The Dogan news agency reported Monday that some 15 tons of explosives had detonated in the incident and that 13 local residents were still missing.

It said the authorities had conducted three investigations of the scene, collecting body parts from a half kilometer area which were sent to Istanbul for analysis and DNA identification.

An AFP correspondent who visited the scene on Friday saw body parts still strewn around the area and was told by villagers that up to 16 people were missing.

In a statement, the PKK also said the explosion was accidental, claiming the vehicle exploded when anti-PKK villagers opened fire on the truck and hit its fuses.

The group said the explosives were meant to be transferred to another location and not detonated.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Google opens doors, to the WH
A project examining White House visitor logs shows the B.O. regime has extended an open door to Google.

Johanna Shelton, Google’s director of public policy -- in effect, the company’s top lobbyist -- has visited White House officials 128 times since President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
took office in 2009.

To put that in perspective, senior lobbyists for other companies in the telecommunications and cable industry -- including Comcast, Facebook, Amazon, Oracle and Verizon -- have visited the White House a combined 124 times in the same span. (That data goes through October 2015.)

The Google Transparency Project, the work of Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to expose corporate influence on government, identified policy pushers for the 50 biggest lobbying spenders and counted how many times they appeared in the White House visitor logs.

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, spent $16.6 million on lobbying in 2015. That was the twelfth most of any company, and the most by a technology firm, just above AT&T’s $16.4 million and Comcast’s $15.7 million.

Saudi Arabia says time may be coming for 'Plan B' on Syria
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

"We believe we should have moved to a 'Plan B' a long time ago," Adel al-Jubeir told news hounds after a meeting of foreign governments in Vienna.

"The choice about moving to an alternative plan, the choice about intensifying the military support (to the opposition) is entirely with the Bashar regime. If they do not respond to the treaties of the international community ... then we will have to see what else can be done."

#2  So they'll be openly funding Salafist groups other than ISIS and Al Nusra (probably a waste of money), or Salafist groups plus ISIS and/or Al Nusra (incurring American ire), or just Al Nusra because the Salafist groups are all local, ISIS is sitting on a target, and Al Nusra has international cachet (but Al Nusra is a branch of Al Qaeda, which seems unwise given previous attempts to start the conquest of Saudi Arabia)? A pity this is happening just when income has fallen by half and there is a nearby war calling heavily on the government purse.

The Grand Turk
Turkey hit Kurdish city with phosphorus bombs
[ARA News] NUSAYBIN – The Turkish army forces have reportedly used the internationally-banned Phosphorus bombs in its military campaign on the Kurdish city of Nusaybin, southeast Turkey, activists and eyewitnesses reported on Tuesday.

This comes amid continuous military operations by the Turkish troops against the Kurdish city of Nusaybin, that have not stopped since 14 March.

Medical sources in the war-torn city confirmed the army’s use of Phosphorus bombs against civilians.

Nusaybin has been exposed to daily bombardment by the Turkish military for the past two months, using heavy artillery and tanks in its operations, where hundreds of houses have been burned and destroyed, amid the displacement of thousands of Kurdish civilians from their hometown.

According to reports, many civilians are still stranded in war-torn neighbourhoods of Nusaybin.

Speaking to ARA News, media activists Akram Baraka reported that the Turkish army used Phosphorus bombs in its attack on Nusaybin on Tuesday.

“After launching the bombs, we saw white smoke followed by increasingly black smoke and then the targeted buildings were exposed to huge fires,” he said.

Akram, who is also a member of the ‘No More Silence’ campaign [documenting violations by government forces against civilians in southeastern Turkey], quoted medical sources inside Nusaybin confirming the use of the internally-banned Phosphorus bombs by the army against civilians stranded in the city.

In the meantime, Turkish bombardment on Nusaybin continued, amid clashes between the army and Kurdish rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) inside the city.

“Every morning a new wave of bombardment is taking place in the city,” Kurdish journalist Mihemed Hesse told ARA News.

This comes as the Turkish forces continued building an isolation wall between Nusaybin and Qamishlo on the Syrian border, according to eyewitnesses.

Turkish army destroying over 350 houses in Nusaybin
Local activists confirmed that the Turkish army forces continue their offensive through shelling the city’s neighborhoods by tanks and heavy artillery, demolishing more than 355 houses in the Zein al-Abedin neighborhood of Nusaybin.

“Pillars of smoke are still rising from the neighborhoods as a result of the Turkish-led military operations,” a local sources told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Members of the campaign “No More Silence”, launched by a group of Kurdish activists in the Nusaybin’s twin city of Qamishlo [Qamishli] northeastern Syria, confirmed that Turkish army bulldozers have entered the Zein al-Abedin neighborhood in order to demolish more houses in the area.

“We are coordinating with reliable sources inside the war-torn city in order to document all violations against civilians’ rights in Nusaybin,” the Kurdish group said.

Dozens of residential buildings have been destroyed by shelling and completely demolished by bulldozers, according to Kurdish activists.

This comes as clashes continued between Turkish troops and the PKK-affiliated People’s Defense Forces (HPG) in the city of Nusaybin and other parts of the Kurdish region in Turkey’s southeast.

More than 100,000 displaced people have been documented in two months, while many others remain stranded in the war-torn towns and villages in the Kurdish region, local activists reported.

In the meantime, the Turkish authorities recently began building a concrete wall along the border in the areas between Ain Diwar and Derik in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah.

Local sources in the Kurdish city of Derik in northeastern Syria told ARA News that the Turkish army leadership has been deploying hundreds of gendarmerie and military vehicles at the borderline with the city of Derik, with orders to shoot on each vehicle or person close to the border.

“Also, a number of Turkish snipers have been seen near the Tigris River, which separates Turkey from Syria in the area of Ain Diwar northeastern Syria,” according to eyewitnesses.

Speaking to ARA News in Derik, media activist Hozan Amin said: “A Syrian Kurdish citizen was shot dead by a Turkish sniper near the border town of Ain Diwar last Tuesday.”

“The Turkish army forces open fire on anyone who passes the Roman bridge [3.5 km northeast of the town of Ain Diwar],” Amin said.

Turkey tightened border security measures after unrest hit the southeastern regions of the countryــwhere Kurds constitute a majority. Also, a series of explosions targeted sensitive security areas inside Turkey. Turkish forces have earlier entered the Syrian territory, breaking into the north-eastern regions, including Sermisakh and Dirna Aghe in Hasakah suburbs.

Declassified docs: Hillary aided rise of ISIS
[WND] NEW YORK - More than 100 pages of previously classified Department of Defense and Department of State documents implicate the Obama administration in a cover-up to obscure the role Hillary Clinton and the State Department played in the rise of ISIS.

The documents were obtained in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the Washington watchdog Judicial Watch.

They confirm WND reporting over the past three years of evidence that U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was involved in shipping weapons from Benghazi to support the al-Qaida-affiliated militias fighting the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, effectively arming the Sunni jihadists who morphed into ISIS.

Corruption claims rise over relief and aid in Syria
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Billions of dollars were sent to hundreds of individuals, institutions and even government during the past years of the Syrian war without anyone revealing the total number of money of relief to the Syrian affected populations. The money which leaked to the wrong pockets.

Destroying the hopes of Syrians in obtaining the basic needs of food and medication is paving the way to topple their high needs manifested in freedom, dignity and justice.

The relief file of the Syrian crisis is considered an exceptional file for many reasons. The most prominent is the size of money and donations pumped into the relief and the number of organization working on the Syrian crisis, their types and intertwining and finally the variety and divergence of funding sources and channels.

All these factors make the file of Syrian relief a huge and complicated one to an extent that following up, supervision, and monitoring procedures seem limited. This automatically led to gaps from which administrative and financial corruption leaked and it grew with the proportion and size of money and aid directed to Syrians in the light of millions of affected.

There is not enough information of how much money reached the targeted and affected in the relief work since nobody can say the total amount of money which has gone to the wrong pockets.

In addition to that, the limitation in the management of the relief work added another pressure on Syrians who already fled war to find themselves in a difficult reality in which they live in tents that do not match the rocket money they hear about coming to rescue them in their name and for them.

The American step of freezing millions of dollars used to fund organization helping Syrian population until they verify it represents the first official procedure around the world. It also confirms the violations in the relief work after many said it is only a claim without evidence.

Abu Sayyaf sets ransom-or-decapitation deadline
[CNN] The Abu Sayyaf, which beheaded a Canadian hostage last month, has threatened to execute another foreign captive if a P600 million ransom isn't paid by June 13.

Canadian Robert Hall and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, two of four hostages kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf on Samal Island last September, once again appeared in a video acquired by the SITE Intelligence Group.

Sekkingstad and Hall were wearing orange shirts, in a jungle surrounded by masked militants. Hall said, "I'm told to tell you that on June the 13th at 3 pm, I will be murdered if the demand is not met. I appeal to my government, the Philippine government as I have appealed before for help."

Sekkingstad likewise asked help from the governments of Norway, Canada and the Philippines. The ransom "worth 6 hundred million pesos" was in the text displayed on the video.

Hall, Sekkingstad, and Filipino Tess Flor are still being held by the Abu Sayyaf after the militants beheaded another Canadian, John Ridsdel, on April 25. A plastic bag containing Ridsdel's severed head was later found on a street in Jolo, Sulu.

The video also showed eight gunmen wearing military-style camouflage uniforms and carrying assault rifles holding two flags. One black flag with white Arabic characters is similar to the flag carried by Daesh fighters.

Totten: Washington's Idiotic Echo Chamber
heh - he takes a pretty harsh and deserved critique of Ben Rhodes' Willing Partisan Rubes
David Samuels' long-form essay last weekend in the New York Times Magazine about President Barack Obama's deputy national security adviser and spokesmen Ben Rhodes has sent the media into a tizzy.

Rhodes had to sell the Iranian nuclear deal to a skeptical American public. He freely admits that he did so by manipulating a select group of reporters that he and staff think are idiots and molded them into his own personal echo chamber.

It wasn't difficult. "All these newspapers used to have foreign bureaus," he told Samuels. "Now they don't. They call us to explain to them what's happening in Moscow and Cairo. Most of the outlets are reporting on world events from Washington. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That's a sea change. They literally know nothing."

What a gob-smacking couple of sentences.

Afghanistan
Govt Accused Of Failing To Help Police Under Siege
Relatives and friends of at least 50 police force members, who are under siege by the Taliban, have accused government of not taking the situation seriously.

The security force members have reportedly been under siege for six days.

"We told government to help the soldiers but it said that they do not have sufficient weapons to help the forces," said Temor Shah, a relative of the soldiers.

Another relative of the policemen, Shafiqullah, said: "It is two days and two nights that we ask government to send helicopters to help the soldiers but they have not made any move so far. Government lies to us and it deceives us."

Members of Baghlan provincial council meanwhile said that a lack of coordination among security forces has worsened the security situation in Baghlan.

"This is a shame as they [government] failed to save the soldiers despite having equipment and tanks," said Bismillah Atash, a member of Baghlan's provincial council.

"Lack of a powerful manager in security forces' leadership and lack of implementing orders by Baghlan security forces are among the problems that have affected the province's security," said Ferozuddin Aimaq, a member of Baghlan provincial council.

Meanwhile, some of the soldiers under siege told TOLOnews that they are faced with a serious threat by Taliban.

"It is six days that we are under Taliban siege. Nothing has been done for us. Taliban launch attacks on us every day and night. Two of our soldiers were killed and some of them were wounded. The martyred soldiers are inside the room but government has not helped us so far."

This comes after the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) on Tuesday blasted government for what they called the lack of attention to the security forces.

Syrian troops backed by Russian Arclight airstrikes captured Palmyra in March and fighting continues miles away until this day.

Fighting among Syrian rebels kills more than 50
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Fighting between turban groups east of Damascus killed more than 50 people Monday, bringing to more than 500 the number of people killed in rebel infighting since late April, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The fighting pits Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
, which is part of the opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC), against rival faction Failaq al-Rahman, and is threatening Jaish al-Islam's dominant position in Eastern Ghouta just outside Damascus.

Jaish al-Islam, which runs the civil administration in the region and has some 7,000 fighters there, suffered a blow in December when its leader, Zahran Alloush, was killed in an air strike.

Failaq al-Rahman controls several towns slightly closer to Damascus, also in Eastern Ghouta, with about 2,000 fighters. Its allies in this particular fight include Islamists, some Al-Qaeda-linked, but the group itself is more moderate.

Some of the more moderate rebel groups have fought alongside Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front during Syria's five-year civil war because of the group's strength on the battlefield against government forces and their allies.

In a statement on Monday, Jaish al-Islam accused Failaq al-Rahman of rejecting an initiative tabled by HNC coordinator Riad Hijab to end the bloodshed in Eastern Ghouta.

A statement by a local body which the Observatory said was close to Failaq al-Rahman Tuesday criticized Jaish al-Islam for failing to withdraw from a town in the area, under an agreement reached between the two sides a week ago.

The statement said Jaish al-Islam had launched a new assault nearby on Tuesday.

Several attempts at ending the fighting have failed.

Jaish al-Islam has accused Failaq al-Rahman of wrecking attempts to stop the fighting by launching its own attacks.

The festivities began on April 28, when Jaish al-Islam's positions in the Eastern Ghouta came under attack, the Observatory said. It said nine civilians including three children had been killed in the fighting since then.

Failaq al-Rahman has been backed in the fighting by a group known as the Fustat Army, whose fighters include members of the Nusra Front, the British-based Observatory says.

Each side has captured dozens of fighters, it said.

During the rebel infighting, government forces have attacked some areas of Eastern Ghouta and made advances there, the Observatory has reported.

The fighting between the turban groups in Eastern Ghouta is one of many smaller-scale battles taking place in the many-sided Syrian conflict, which has killed more than 270,000 people and is in its sixth year.

Afghanistan
20 Taliban insurgents killed in Kunduz drone strike
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least 20 Taliban forces of Evil were killed in a drone strike in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan, local officials said.

The Arclight airstrike was carried out earlier today in Dasht-e-Archi district targeting two vehicles of the Taliban myrmidons.

Provincial police front man Hejratullah Akbari said the two vehicles were targeted around 10:00 am local time in Mullah Quli area.

He said preliminary reports suggest a number of the Taliban capos were also among those killed in the Arclight airstrike.

Kunduz is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan were anti-government armed bully boy groups are actively operating in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

The Talibs launched a major offensive during the recent weeks in a bid to capture key parts of Kunduz province, including the strategic Kunduz city which was seized by the group last year.

The offensive was launched as the group announced its spring offensive earlier last month and vowed to carry out more attacks across the country.

Meanwhile,

Philippines' Duterte offers cabinet posts to communists
Philippines president-in-waiting Rodrigo Duterte has extended an offer of cabinet posts to the communist party of the nation, where a decades-old conflict with leftist rebels has killed tens of thousands.
I'm sure the Philippines can defend their interests in the South China Sea without our help...
Duterte said the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) might have the opportunity to fill posts in the Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Foxes, chicken coops...
Duterte said, "I have kept open [these departments] because they said they are the most oppressed. Those are the only departments I can concede to them [leftist groups], provided they are qualified educationally."

Referring to the CPP's armed wing the New People's Army (NPA), he emphasized, "when I reach my oath-taking... they must realize I am the government and I am the enemy but I offer my hand in peace and we can talk."

Before the May 9 polls, Duterte had invited the CPP's exiled founder -- Jose Maria Sison, his former professor at a Manila university -- back to the Philippines. Duterte said, "Yes, he [Sison] is welcome. I am happy with the statement that he is coming home. I would very much want to talk to him about resolving the insurgency problem."

Sison, 77, currently lives in the Netherlands, having fled to Europe after negotiations with the Philippine government failed in 1987.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Two Mexicans Extradited to U.S. in Killing of Agent
[AnNahar] Two Mexicans have been extradited to the United States and charged with involvement in the 2011 murder of an immigration and customs agent, justice officials said Monday.

The two men face murder charges in the 2011 killing of Jaime Zapata, and attempted murder charges against another agent, a Justice Department statement said.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were aboard an armored vehicle near San Luis Potosi, Mexico when gunnies with the Los Zetas narco mob opened fire, killing Zapata and wounding Avila.

Jesus Ivan Quezada Pina, 28, and Alfredo Gaston Mendoza Hernandez, 33, appeared before a magistrate in Washington. They are being held without bond.

Four other suspects including a cartel commander have pleaded guilty in the same cases. They were among five extradited over the affair.

The commander, Julian Zapata Espinosa, has testified that there was a mix-up, and that when the US agents refused to get out of the vehicle, the gang opened fire thinking the men were with a rival narco mob.

The Justice Department did not say when the suspects were extradited.
Update at 11 a.m. ET: Rantburg's archive on this story goes back to 2011. Attorney General Holder literally pounded the table on this one, bringing to life the lawyerly dictum, "If you have the facts, pound the facts. If you have the law, pound the law. If you have neither facts nor law, pound the table."

India-Pakistan
State responsible for inaction against Jamaatud Dawa, Jaish-i-Mohammad: Sanaullah
[DAWN] Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday said that legal action against proscribed organizations like Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is not possible since "state itself has remained a part of this".

In an interview with BBC Urdu, Sanaullah said that these organizations are banned but asked, "How can someone proceed with legal action when state is itself involved in the case".

He, however, added that the accusation against PML-N for overlooking extremism in Punjab province is ’baseless’.

"After Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
, our whole military and politicianship agreed that no one should be allowed to use Pak soil against the country’s neighbours. And any kind of terrorist activity which may be carried out to help someone or for someone’s right to self determination will be unacceptable for us," the Punjab law minister was quoted as saying.

Answering a question about South Punjab’s link to militancy, Sanaullah said the whole country gripped by extremism and "this impression that South Punjab is the hub of militancy is not correct."

He added that the region was linked with militancy during the PPP tenure by former interior minister Rehman Malik
Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men. He had to give up the interior ministry job because he held dual Brit citizenship.

The US Military - A Fish Rotting from the Head
[US Defense Watch] The US military is a fish rotting from the head; a politically correct, feminized, decrepit, nearly bankrupt force that is one step away from complete obliteration on the land, on the seas and in the air.

The military is decaying by the hour. Veterans know it, the troops know it, the military’s senior leaders know it, yet they do nothing as the floor gives way underneath them.

From our commander in chief, to the Secretary of Defense, the secretaries of each service branch, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the admirals and generals, the US military is being led by a combination of leftists, feminists, selfish careerists and all around lackeys and yes men.

The current crop of senior leadership in the US Armed Forces has either green lighted, watched or turned away in embarrassment as every form of budgetary cut, equipment shortage, dimwitted national security directive and social engineering policy is hammered into the military like a thousand nails in a wooden coffin.

Teen Arrested over Alleged Sydney Terror Plot
[AnNahar] An 18-year-old man was locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Sydney on Tuesday over an alleged "imminent" terror plot, as police raided properties in Melbourne in a separate counter-terrorism operation, officials said.

Australian Federal Police claimed the teenager was scouting possible sites in Sydney to undertake an attack while at the same time trying to acquire a firearm.

In February he had been stopped at Sydney airport as he attempted to leave for Syria, despite his passport being cancelled, to allegedly fight overseas with jihadist groups.

"Since that time, he has been under the surveillance of the relevant authorities who have decided this morning to act to prevent an imminent terrorist event," Attorney-General George Brandis told news hounds, without giving precise details of potential targets.

The teen, from Sydney, was expected to be charged with acting in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act, which has a maximum penalty of life in prison.

He will also likely be charged with "preparing for an act of foreign incursion".

"This is the ninth occasion since the national terrorism alert level was raised (to high) in September 2014 that police have successfully intervened to prevent an imminent terrorism event on Australian soil," Brandis added.

Counter-terror police have made a string of arrests since late 2014, including a 16-year-old boy charged with preparing an attack linked to Anzac Day services honouring Australian soldiers in Sydney in April.

Other arrests saw a 17-year-old boy picked up in a raid in Melbourne a year ago, allegedly with "improvised bombs" in his family home.

Officials said Tuesday's arrest had no connection to police raids carried out in the southern city of Melbourne, part of an operation connected to five men detained last week over an apparent plan to leave the country by boat.

Police have alleged that the five -- aged in their twenties and thirties -- wanted to travel by boat to Indonesia and from there make their way to Syria to join jihadist groups.

The government has passed numerous national security laws including legislation allowing passports to be cancelled to prevent Australians from leaving the country.

But police have been unable to prevent all attacks, including the terror-linked murder of police employee Curtis Cheng by a teenager last October.

Rebel fighter kills 2 YPG members in revenge upon 'death parade'
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Zaman al-Wasl verified the identity of the person who appeared in a footage when he killed media official and first assistant of Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Unit militia (YPG).

The data revealed the person who executed the operation is Jameel al-Saeed, known as Jameel Karmou. Al-Saeed was a member of Jaish al-Thwar which is close to YPG before he defected from Jaish al-Thwar after the YPG parade of corpses of fighters killed in Ayn Daqneh battles by YPG.

Jameel al-Saeed is from Alqameyeh village subordinate to Menneg in southern countryside of Aleppo. He joined Jaish al-Thwar and fought with them in battles despite his village disapproval. Later, he defected from Jaish al-Thwar and executed two YPG leaders.

Jameel al-Saeed published a footage on his personal page entitled "by God, we will take Dire Revenge." The comments on the post approved his defection and his will to Dire Revenge the blood of the deaders whom YPG displayed their corpses in a form of death parade.

Jaish al-Shamal released a statement on Monday saying they executed a security operation in YPG and Jaish al-Thwar strongholds which killed two YPG leaders and another personnel ranked first assistant.

Jasih al-Thwar announced in the statement that they performed the operation as a response on the death parade and disrespect of the deaders following Ayn Danqeh battle. YPG roamed in Efrin displaying nearly 50 corpses on a truck and documented the parade which provoked many angry reactions by many parties.

Jaish al-Shamal said the operation resulted in killing of YPG PR Shirin and Ziyad Jaafar ranked first assistant in the militia.

The statemenet added the Jameel Karmou led the operation and promised the Kurdish militia harsher and tougher operation.

In conjunction, activists circulated a footage of the liquidation of Shirin and Ziyad Jaafar. A young man with blonde and tall hair appears at the end of the footage saying the operation was done to take a Dire Revenge for the deaders whom YPG displayed their bodies in utter disrespect to the dead.

The footage shows the shooting on Shirin and Ziyad Jaafar and their killing. Zaman al-Wasl refrains from publishing the footage.

Wudn't Us: YPG denies assassination of Kurdish officials
[ARA News] QAMISHLO – Official spokesman for the Kurdish forces of People’s Protection Units (YPG) in a statement to ARA News rejected the claims by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) group about the assassination of two members of the YPG media office.

The Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) group of Jaish al-Shamal claimed responsibility for the killing of alleged Kurdish officials Shirin and her assistant Ziyad Jafar on Monday, which caused a wave of outrage among Syrian Kurds. The two were allegedly part of the negotiations concerning the handing over of 66 rebels that were killed in a failed attack on the Kurdish-held Ayn Daqnaq, in the countryside of Aleppo.

“The claim of assassinating two of our YPG officials was a mere fabrication. The two persons who appeared in a video released by the FSA are not members of our media office,” Fewzi Sileman, spokesperson of the Defence Body and representative of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the Shabha district, told ARA News.

“After the painful defeats suffered by the terrorist groups backed by countries like Turkey, especially after the battle of Ayn Daqnaq, they are trying to raise the moral of their gangs in various ways, to prevent an internal collapse and confrontations among themselves,” the YPG command in Afrin [in Kurdish Efrîn] said in an official statement.

Moreover, the General command of the People’s Protection Units in Afrin denied that any female members work in the YPG office there, in response to the FSA claim that among those assassinated was a female Kurdish official, and said that these small groups of FSA rebels such as Jaish al-Shamal are not able to capture Kurdish YPG members, adding that the battle of Ayn Daqnaq was an example of this.

“Such fabrications cannot obscure the truth,” the YPG said.

Clashes have increased between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF] and rival rebel groups backed by Turkey, since the SDF advanced in February taking over Til Rifaat and threatening to capture the town of Marea in northern Aleppo.

However, the Kurdish defence head in Afrin, Abdo Ibrahim, said they are committed to the truce in Aleppo province and will not attack rival rebel groups despite of continuous rocket and mortar attacks by Islamist rebels that have killed and injured civilians.

Speaking to ARA News, Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security Nicholas Heras said: “These assassinations, targeting of civilian areas, and turf battle conflicts based on the politics of identity weaken the anti-ISIS campaign, and are a thorn in the paw of the U.S.-led counter-ISIS effort.”

“There is a real danger that the identity “Kurd,” will become synonymous with the word “traitor” for a large number of predominately ethnic Arab members of the Syrian opposition,” he added, suggesting this will play into the strategy of ideological extremist actors such as the Islamic State (ISIS).

Amnesty International last week said that armed groups attacking the Kurdish neighbourhood of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo since February have killed at least 83 civilians, and called on Turkey, Gulf states and others to stop the transfer of arms to the Aleppo Conquest operations room–an umbrella for Syrian Islamist rebels.

Russian support won’t help Syrian Kurds for future Geneva talks
[ARA News] QAMISHLO – Analysts suggest that despite the Russian diplomatic support to Syrian Kurds, it’s unlikely that the Democratic Union Party (PYD) will be invited to any future peace talks in Geneva.

Syrian Kurdish officials have been visiting both the United States and Russia in a bit to receive more political and military support.

On Monday, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a meeting with PYD representative Khalid Issa in Vienna, thanked the Syrian Kurds for returning the body of Russian soldier Alexander Prokhorenko who was killed in Syria. Lavrov reportedly said that the PYD should be part of any future peace talks in Geneva.

Speaking to ARA News, Woodrow Wilson Centre’s analyst Amber Zaman said: “The main reason that the PYD is excluded from the Geneva talks is Turkey’s opposition. Turkey is a key actor in the Syrian conflict and without its cooperation the talks would fail. But another, frequently overlooked reason, is that most of the other Syrian opposition groups despise the PYD.”

Michael Stephens, head of the RUSI think-tank, told ARA News that it will be difficult to foresee the PYD to be invited to the Syria peace talks in Geneva any time soon.

“The vast majority of opposition groups are still vehemently opposed to any notion of national division in Syria. Additionally, both Turkey and Saudi Arabia would reject the Kurdish inclusion,” he said.

“However this would only speed up the de-facto formation of a separate ruling system in Syria, as the Kurds will simply concentrate on institutionalizing their governance across Rojava [Syria’s Kurdish region] until the federalization they seek in Syria is achieved. If both the regime and the opposition continue to refuse to talk to the PYD they will only succeed in hastening the break up of the country, rather than preventing it,” Stephens told ARA News.

Nevertheless, head of the RUSI think-tank described the Russian push for the inclusion of the PYD in the Syrian negotiations as “unsuccessful”.

“The Russians have been pushing hard for a while on this, but have yet to get a result. I think primarily because Turkey knows this is a Russian pressure point it’s why they’ve resisted it so strongly,” he added.

Some Kurdish politicians believe that Russia is only supporting the Assad regime in Syria, and is not serious in its support to the Kurds.

Moreover, the PYD is also disappointed that the United States does not recognize the Kurds, and does not push Turkey to accept the PYD as one of the Kurds’ representatives in Syria.

A Kurdish politician who wished to stay anonymous wondered how the US could convince and push Russia to accept an Islamist rebel leader like Mohammed Aloush, commander of the Army of Islam [Iash al-Islam], as a negotiator in Geneva, but could not push for the inclusion of the PYD.

“Short of the diplomatic recognition the Kurds desire, the US can deliver security guarantees. There is a widespread analysis on the American side that while the Kurds are not the complete answer to defeating ISIS, they are an indispensable component to defeating ISIS,” Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security told ARA News.

“The US is trying to avoid this by escalating military support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) now, to make northeastern Syria under the American sphere of influence,” he added.

Pakistan tells US it holds 'credentials' to join nuclear suppliers club
[DAWN] Pakistain's foreign secretary on Tuesday told a United States envoy his country has the "credentials" to join a club of nuclear trading nations, signalling Islamabad may apply alongside India and force a showdown in the consensus-based group next month.

Such a move would drag the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) into the long-running tension between India and Pakistain.

Diplomats last year quietly launched a new push to induct India into the NSG -- a 48-nation club dedicated to curbing nuclear arms proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that could foster nuclear weapons development.

The Grand Turk
Turkey to take action on border town if it receives no help, Erdogan says
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
will take it upon itself to deal with attacks on the border town of Kilis if it receives no outside help, President Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday, in a sign Ankara may be willing to act against ISIS on its own.

"We will overcome the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS). We will solve that issue ourselves if we don't receive help to prevent those rockets from hitting Kilis," Erdogan told an international meeting of ministers in Istanbul.

Kilis, which is just across the border from an ISIS-controlled area of Syria, has come under frequent rocket fire in recent weeks. Turkish officials say Ankara needs more help from the U.S.-led coalition in protecting its border.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Over 80 Taliban holy warriors were killed or maimed in a series of operations conducted by the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) forces in southern Kandahar province.

The 205th Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) forces in a statement said the operations were conducted in the vicinity of Shahwali Kot district.

According to a statement by 205th Atal Corps, at least 41 turbans were killed and 42 others were maimed during the operations.

The statement further added that the operations were led by the commander of 205th Atal Corps and the main aim of the operations was to clear the main Kandahar-Tarin Kot highway.

At least 15 different types of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were also discovered and defused during the operations, MoD added.

The anti-government armed Death Eater groups have not commented regarding the report so far.

The Afghan forces have stepped up counter-terrorism operations in southern Kandahar province as the Death Eater groups are attempting to expand their insurgency activities with the launch of their spring offensive earlier last month.

At least 8 turbans were killed and 15 others were maimed during an air raid in Arghandab district last week.

Earlier, at least 32 turbans were killed and 18 others were maimed during the operations in Shahwali Kot district.

Think Tank Seeks Damages Over ‘Unlawful’ Climate Subpoena
[FREEBEACON] A libertarian nonprofit group is seeking damages from the U.S. Virgin Islands’ chief law enforcement officer, alleging a politically motivated legal campaign designed to stifle the group’s policy advocacy activities.

Attorneys representing the Competitive Enterprise Institute filed a motion in a Washington, D.C. court on Monday alleging that Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Walker violated a D.C. law designed to prevent frivolous legal actions targeting policy groups’ rights to free speech and government redress.

The motion is the latest chapter in a developing legal battle between conservative and industry groups that oppose Democratic attorneys general in 17 states who are pursuing racketeering charges against oil giant Exxon Mobil.

Walker subpoenaed CEI last month as part of the anti-Exxon campaign. He demanded a decade’s worth of internal documents and communications about the group’s work on energy and environmental policy.

Andrew Grossman, a BakerHostetler attorney representing CEI, called the subpoena "offensive," "unlawful," and "un-American" in an April reply. He vowed to fight the subpoena, which was filed in D.C., where CEI is headquartered.

An attorney representing a group of AGs, including Walker, in their Exxon probe replied on Friday, telling CEI that it is abandoning its subpoena but reserving the right to restart the effort at any point in the future. In response, Grossman and his BakerHostetler colleague David Rivkin filed a motion to vacate the subpoena entirely. They are also asking the court to reimburse CEI for its legal fees and levy additional penalties on Walker’s office as a means of discouraging abuses of the D.C. legal system.

‘Defective’ FIR registered in rape case
[DAWN] KARACHI: Relatives of a teenage rape victim and representatives of a non-governmental organization on Monday accused the Sachal police of ’manipulating’ facts in their complaint and registering a ’defective’ FIR to benefit the suspects.

Speaking at a presser at the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Press Club, the relatives and NGO officials with the alleged rape victim said that instead of registering a rape case against the suspects, the police merely mentioned in the FIR that they tried to outrage her modesty.

Giving details of the incident that took place on May 8 in Safoora Goth, they said that the 16-year-old girl was at her brother-in-law’s house when three suspects, including a relative, came there and subjected her to rape.

The family approached the police for lodging an FIR but they initially refused to entertain their request. On May 15, the Sachal police registered an FIR but not in accordance with the victim’s statement, they alleged.

The NGO representative, Shamsheer Khan, alleged in the presser that the police had not only manipulated the case but were not taking any interest to arrest the nominated suspect.

The relatives demanded action against the coppers concerned.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
the Sachal police said that they started the paperwork but haven't done much else (FIR 260/2016) against three suspects under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty,) 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 337-A (punishment of shajjah) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code.
