America In Free Fall
h/t Instapundit
Before the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BC), where Philip II of Macedon prevailed over a common Greek alliance, the city-states had been weakened by years of social and economic turmoil. To read the classical speeches in the Athenian assembly is to learn of the democracy’s constant struggles with declining revenues, insolvency, and expanding entitlements. Rome between the First Triumvirate (59 BC) and the ascension of Caesar Augustus’s autocracy (27 BC) was mostly defined by gang violence, chaos, and civil war, the common theme being a loss of trust in republican values. Russia was in a revolutionary spiral for nearly twenty years between 1905 and the final victory of the Bolsheviks in 1922, ending up with a cure worse than the disease. And Europe between 1930 and 1939 saw most of its democracies erode as fascists and communists gained power--eventually leading to the greater disaster of the outbreak of World War II.

The United States has seen periods of near fatal internal chaos--in the late 1850s leading up to the carnage of the Civil War, during the decade of the Great Depression between 1929 and 1939, and in the chaotic 1960s. Something similar is starting to plague America today on a variety of political, economic, social, and cultural fronts.

Pakistani Woman Throws Acid at Man Who Refused to Marry Her - Politicians Magically Start Suggesting Fixes
A woman in Pakistan was arrested for allegedly throwing acid on a man who refused to marry her, police said Friday, marking an unusual case in a country where rates of violence against women are high.

Local police official Bashir Ahmed said the 32-year-old woman, Monil Mai, was arrested Thursday, hours after she attacked her boyfriend Sadaqat Ali when he went to her home in the Mukhdoom Rashid neighborhood of Multan, a city in central Pakistan.

Ahmed said that Mai had been having an affair with Ali for several years. She wanted him to marry her so that she could divorce her husband, he said.

Ali was being treated at a hospital in Multan, in the eastern Punjab province, Ali said.

Acid attacks and other so-called honor crimes against women are not unusual in Pakistan, but women are rarely the perpetrators of such attacks.

"It is a rare incident in which a woman has been accused of throwing acid on a man," said Zohra Yusuf, who heads the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. She urged the government to take steps to stop the sale of acid to unauthorized persons.

"There is a need to make checks on the availability of acid to common people to prevent such future attacks against men or women," Yusuf said. Acid is easily available at markets in many parts of Pakistan, although the government says it was tightening controls to stop illegal sale of chemicals.
When women are attacked by men: Meh.
When men are attacked by women: Shit just got real.

Would I be a bad person if I shipped five gallon jugs of acid to the local wimmins rights groups in Pakiwakiland?

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The A-10 'Warthog' Just Got A Little More Badass
The A-10 Thunderbolt II, known as the "Warthog," recently seemingly destined for the scrapyard, is engaging Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Taliban forces in Afghanistan using a new weapon with a badass name: the Advanced Precision Black-Turban Seeking Kill Weapon System.

Manufactured by BAE Systems, the APKWS is equipped with laser-guided rockets, giving A-10 aircraft in Afghanistan a "deep magazine of high-precision weapons," according to Popular Mechanics.

One of the biggest advantages to using this system is the minimal collateral damage left when fired, which is a result of its tiny warhead.

It is also lighter, which allows the A-10 to carry 38 of these instead of the two 500-pound bombs it carried before.

According to a statement from BAE, the new kit transforms a standard unguided munition into a precision laser-guided rocket.

Though this is the first time the system has been employed on one of the Air Force's fixed-wing craft, BAE said it had proved "highly successful for the Navy and Marine Corps since 2012 and has also been used by US Army Apache helicopters in combat."

The Marine Corps started fielding the APKWS on AV-8B Harriers, while the Army outfitted AH-64 Apaches with it.

The upgrade also fits the Pentagon's desire for more plug-and-play systems, which can be retrofitted to existing craft and technology. To install the APKWS on a Warthog, all you have to do is remove the rocket's nose cone, attach the new guidance section, and screw the nose cone back on.

I'm Former NYPD: Here's Why I Suspect There Was More Than One Shooter In Orlando

#1  Sorry, but I'm loathe to consider anyone from NYPD an expert in anything, especially shoot. Okay okay, maybe donut eating and coffee laced with booze drinking. He also makes no mention of the fact that the bullets likely passed through several people and when firing at a packed mass like he was, missing is going to be pretty hard.

#4  Similar thing happened in the Aurora, CO theater shooting. All the initial reports had multiple shooters, which made sense because otherwise why didn't people just run out the exits? And the death toll in Orlando is hard to credit to just one guy.

#5  The off duty policeman hired as a security guard exchanged fire with Mr. Mateen, as did the first police officers to arrive on the scene. This is separate from any possible additional bad guys.
Posted by: trailing wife || 06/17/2016 13:38 Comments || Top||

#6  People didn't run out the exits because one 'hero' (if he is to be believed) blocked the door thinking he was keeping the killer inside and ignored the pounding of everyone trying to get out.

That and the natural instinct is to get down and hide which is suicidal in such situations when you should literally fight or flight depending upon your proximity to the shooter.

Lawmakers call for defunding UN schools after film shows Palestinian kids praising ISIS
U.S. lawmakers want to cut off funds to United Nations-run schools where a new documentary shows kids as young as 13 declaring they want to kill Jews and join ISIS.

The documentary, "The UNRWA Road to Terror: Palestinian Classroom Incitement," shows children as young as 7 in schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) expressing support for terrorism. One clip shows a 13-year-old Palestinian student chanting "With Allah's help I will fight for ISIS, the Islamic State."

Members of Congress and sources with knowledge of pending legislation told FoxNews.com that lawmakers are looking to introduce bills cutting off funding from such schools before Congress adjourns this summer.

Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., said major reform is needed to UN schools.

"It is a crime against humanity, an outrage, and does not in any way prepare the Palestinian population or future generations of Palestinians for peace with Israelis," Lamborn told FoxNews.com. "It is unacceptable that the international community, including the United States, is funding UNRWA without demanding change."
I like Lamborn. He is one of the few good ones left and is also leading the charge to impeach the IRS commissioner.
According to State Department figures, the U.S. provided $390 million to help fund UNRWA in 2015.

The Congressional push comes as Israelis mourn four civilians killed in a Tel Aviv restaurant last week by two young Palestinians from the West Bank.

Israeli officials have pointed to links between Palestinian calls for violence and the murders.
"That's Racist!!" - UN
The documentary shows incitement across several schools.

"We have to make war to prove we are stronger than the Jews," said a 7-year-old girl who is shown in the film saying the line in the classroom of a UN school in Jerusalem.

"Right now I am prepared to be a suicide bomber," says a 13-year-old shown in the film at another UN school.

Another student, who is identified in the film as a 10-year-old who goes to a UN school in Bethlehem, is shown saying, "We need to take steps to kill them, and they will retreat and we will advance."

Documentary producer David Bedein told Fox News that he and his organization, Center for Near East Research have been researching UNRWA for nearly 30 years. He linked the content of the film to the potential Congressional push.

"The U.S. government sponsored the peace process, yet the same U.S. government undermines any hope of peace" by funding problematic UN schools, he said.

A leading Palestinian human rights expert told FoxNews.com that the film was accurate.

"The film accurately portrays UNRWA schools… advocacy of violence remains rampant dictated by teachers who run the U.S.-funded UNRWA schools," said Palestinian human rights activist and political analyst Bassam Eid.

UN officials attacked Bedein and other critics. UNRWA spokesperson Christopher Gunness said "Fox News is again being duped by David Bedein."

Gunness said that Bedein had mixed up UN schools with other Palestinian schools where incitement may occur, but which are not run by the UN.
Uh...huh...

Considering the UN is leading anti-Israel efforts and has been for decades this really isn't all that surprise to those that pay attention. Long past time for the US to defund and kick out the UN.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
New York, Boston And D.C. Could Eventually Be One Gigantic City
[Huffpoo] The world’s population is moving into urban centers at a dizzying pace.

An estimated 66 percent of people will live in cities by 2050. And as the number of residents swell, urban boundaries will expand into the territory of other densely populated areas until entire regions coalesce into super-metropolises, author Parag Khanna posits in his new book Connectography.
D.C. is already sucking the life out of the rest of the country. I'll be long gone by 2050, enjoy !
Khanna calls these areas "megacities." While that term is usually used to describe individual cities with populations over 10 million -- of which there are dozens around the world, including New York, Mexico City, Beijing and Mumbai -- Khanna writes that megacities shouldn’t just be defined by how many people they hold.

He sees future megacities not as individual entities but as clusters linked by advanced infrastructure systems. These clusters, he says, would be major drivers of economic growth.

"We should spend time building cities that are viable, connected and stable," Khanna told The Huffington Post. "It’s about improving livelihoods and infrastructure, and building a path to stability."

In Connectography, which was published in April, Khanna says 40 of these interconnected megacities will form in the next decade, with many concentrated in fast-growing regions in Asia.

In the map below, some of these potential megacities are marked by dotted lines. For instance, there’s "Abu-Dubai," a merging of the cities Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. In Japan, there’s "Tokyo-Osaka."

#7  Don't forget Baltimore.

Khanna paints a nice picture but, unless there are jobs for all the people who live in these cities they, the reality will be more like megaslums. There has to be more to attract people to these urban areas than subsidized housing, readily available heroin and EBT cards.

#9  Deaths now exceed births in Japan. The outer villages are emptying. What population will move into a Tokyo-Osaka megacity?

New York City's growth fell last year to 0.6%, while the population of the rest of the state fell. And like Japan, the state's population is aging. I don't think New York City will be contributing much longer to this future Boston-Baltimore megacity corridor. But it's a pretty projection, one that dates back to the 1970s.

Gun Shop Owner Warned FBI about Orlando Killer
Orlando gunman Omar Mateen tried to buy heavy-duty body armor and bulk ammunition from a Florida gun shop several weeks ago, but a suspicious employee refused to sell him anything - and even called the FBI, according to one of the store's owners Thursday.
Too many tips; not enough agents. And budget. We need more budget.
Mateen came into the shop alone and asked for a "Level 3" bulletproof vest and then walked away for a second, speaking in Arabic on his cell phone, the store's owner said. When he came back, Mateen told the employee he also wanted bulk ammo, which usually comes in 1,000 rounds.
Note to bad guyz: Remember the Oklahoma City lesson - buy your bomb materials and ammo in small quantities from different stores - be patient! Your virgins can wait!
Their interaction only lasted 5 minutes, but it triggered enough concern in the employee decided to call the FBI as soon as Mateen walked out. Abell said no one came to investigate.
Note to good gu FBI - who did he call from the gun store? The NSA will tell you, if Champ will permit it.
Note: we had this story yesterday. Not snipped because of the in-lines, but please check not only the same day, but the previous few, particularly on quickly developing investigations following big attacks. This is not the only duplicate submitted today.

#1  The FBI is good at overlooking the obvious. Remember the agent who was censured because she kept warning that Muslims were taking a curious flight training that only called for learning how to take off and fly but seemed to have no interest in landing? Remember the FBI disinterest in Mullah Omar's Faruq Mosque in Brooklyn? In the growth of the Hamas/Muslim Brotherhood operation in Virginia/Maryland? In the growth of Gelani's "warrior" operation in mid-America? Etc., etc., etc. If one were to investigate who has done more to help reduce the terrorist threat, the FBI or US Treasury, the UST would win in a walk.

Home Front: WoT
It Was John Brennan Himself Who Halted LEO Training on Islam, Jihad
[PJ] While testifying in an open session of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, CIA director John Brennan admitted Thursday:

Despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and in the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism capability and global reach.

He added that a significant element of that global reach is because the Islamic State:

... has a large cadre of Western fighters who could potentially serve as operatives for attacks in the West ... [ISIS is] probably exploring a variety of means for infiltrating operatives into the West, including refugee flows, smuggling routes, and legitimate methods of travel.

What Brennan did not say -- and what no one in the committee or media challenged him about -- was that he himself is largely responsible for this state of affairs.

As I reported earlier this week, John Brennan is the person who -- after U.S. Muslim groups demanded he do so - "purged" all mention of Islam and jihad from law enforcement counter-terror training materials in 2011.

A chief reason that the Islamic Stat's "global reach" has not been reduced is because the U.S. has failed to identify, confront, and oppose the ideology that has enabled it to amass "a large cadre of Western fighters." That ideology has spread unchecked in the U.S. in large part because Brennan didn't think it was worth teaching law enforcement about it.

#9  phil_b is right. The area where these things can be launched from is about 300 square miles. FM-100-2.1 page 136 (https://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm100-2-1.pdf) says that a Russian 152mm howitzer battery can suppress a square mile with about 4000 rounds. The Israeli 155mm artillery is probably similar. So, with a million 155 rounds, Israel can cover the whole area. They have 900 of these howitzers that fire 2 rounds a minute sustained, so it would take about 12 hours to clear south Lebanon with just this one of many weapon systems available to the IDF.

If I were there, I would stock at least 14 million rounds to hedge against that contingency; so, I could begin every sunrise and every sunset with a complete barrage for a week, which would cost less than $5 billion. (iron dome has cost about the same amount, and buying both over the course of a decade would be wise.)

Israel might want island built off coast of Gazoo
Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz, who is also transportation minister, presented his vision for Israel to become a trade bridge between the Mediterranean Sea and countries to its east by revving up the historic Jezreel Valley Railway line, part of an train network in the region active during the first half of the twentieth century, under Ottoman and British rule. He revealed that Turkish trucks are already making use of Israel’s strategic position, which offers a detour around war-torn Syria.

“Turkish trucks are already bringing goods to the east via Haifa port. They are using the Israeli route as an alternative to the Syrian route, which can’t be used due to the situation there,” he said.

Katz also took the opportunity to raise the subject of creating an international island in the sea opposite the Gaza Strip to act as a port with a bridge to the land for the transfer of people and goods.

“This plan could contribute much to easing the pressure on the residents of the Strip, while further advancing the separation from Israel,” he explained, and noted that Israel’s security leadership is very interested in the idea.

“I hope that the highest political leadership will have the courage and determination to make a decision,” he said.

In February the Hebrew-language Haaretz daily reported that senior IDF officials support the idea of easing the pressure on Hamas, the de facto ruler of Gaza, amid a worsening economic situation in Gaza that could lead to new conflict, by giving the territory access to a seaport. It said a range of possible port arrangements — including an artificial offshore island — are being discussed at senior military and political levels.

Israeli Intel Minister warns "megalomaniac" Nasrallah
Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz launched a scathing attack on the Hezbollah terror group’s leader, calling Hassan Nasrallah a “megalomaniac” with no concept of reality and warning that Lebanon would be “ruined” in a future conflict between the IDF and Hezbollah.

“Hezbollah continues to be the primary non-state threat, not only to Israel but also to Lebanon,” he told the Herzliya Conference, an annual seminar reviewing Israel’s security.

He added that a conflict with the Lebanon-based Shiite group could be triggered by a minor incident due to “the megalomaniac character of the organization’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, a fanatical personality who lacks any conception of reality except, perhaps, anything to do with protecting his personal security.”
Plus, Nasty's afraid of his own shadow and is allergic to sunlight...
His words came a day after IDF Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevy, speaking at the same conference, put particular emphasis on the threat from Hezbollah in Lebanon, as Israel prepares to mark 10 years since the Second Lebanon War next month.

Hezbollah is believed to have an arsenal of more than 100,000 missiles and rockets, along with weapons systems “that they never had before,” Halevy said.

But Katz said that it is Israel’s northern neighbor and the Hezbollah leader who had the most to lose in a conflict with Israel.

“A war in Lebanon and an attack on the Israeli home front will bring about the ousting of Nasrallah and will bring ruin to Lebanon,” he predicted.

Masked gunmen shoot dead 2 policemen in Egypt’s Al-Arish
[AlAhram] Two coppers were rubbed out on Thursday morning in Al Arish of North Sinai, Egypt’s interior ministry said.

Four masked gunnies approached the house where the two coppers were staying in the North Sinai quiet provincial capital Al-Arish and opened fire on them, the ministry added in a statement.

Egypt has seen a spike in turban activity since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, with most of the attacks occurring in the North Sinai region bordering the Gazoo Strip.

The violence has mainly targeted police and army personnel and at times has occurred in the capital Cairo and other places on the Egyptian mainland.

Southeast Asia
Four Indonesians Jailed over IS-Linked Terror Plot
An Indonesian bombmaker inspired by an Islamic State extremist was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for plotting to blow up a Buddhist temple on Java island.

The court heard that Ibad, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, received funding and guidance for the attack from Bahrum Naim, a radical Islamist linked to the January suicide attacks in Jakarta that left eight people dead.

Three others -- Sugiyanto, Saifudin and Yus Karman -- were also found guilty of terrorist offenses in a Jakarta court and sentenced to four years and eight months over their role in the failed bomb plot.

Ibad's lawyer said his client had been lured by Naim through social media to carry out an attack. The two had known each other for many years before Naim traveled to Syria and rose to notoriety among Indonesian extremists fighting for the so-called Islamic State group.

"Ibad is Bahrun Naim's childhood friend," the lawyer Kamsi told AFP outside the East Jakarta courtroom.

"Naim lured Ibad to join him by saying it was easy to get a job in Syria, and told him to detonate a bomb in Solo."

Naim sent cash via an Indonesian bank to fund the operation, the court was told. Ibad handled the cash and recruited the others to find a suitable target in Solo, a midsize city on the main island of Java.

The group assembled a bomb but were arrested by police just days before launching their attack.

A sustained crackdown in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, weakened many of the most dangerous extremist networks responsible for a string of deadly homegrown attacks during the 2000s.

But the attack in downtown Jakarta earlier this year, the first claimed by IS in Southeast Asia, sparked fears of a resurgence in militancy.

Police alleged Naim masterminded the attack from Syria, where his exact whereabouts remain unknown. Four militants and four civilians died in the coordinated suicide bomb and gun attacks carried out in broad daylight in the Indonesian capital.

Police believe hundreds of Indonesians have traveled to Syria to fight with militant groups including IS.

Palestinian teen said shot by PA forces in East Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Abbas’s coppers conduct arrests in Kafr Aqab, apparently violating Israeli illusory sovereignty; 15-year-old seriously maimed in shootout

Paleostinian Authority police forces operating in East Jerusalem, outside their area of jurisdiction, shot and seriously maimed a Paleostinian teen on Wednesday, Walla News reported.

While Israel’s Civil Administration had authorized PA activity in nearby Qalandiya, PA forces reportedy entered Kafr Aqab, which is under the jurisdiction of the Jerusalem Municipality and thus under Israeli rule, the news site reported.

During the operation to arrest suspects on criminal-related activity, PA coppers entered into a shootout with armed criminals. A 15-year-old teenager was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the head.

He was evacuated to receive medical treatment in Ramallah.

PA officials said they were investigating the incident, and said it was not yet clear whether the teen had been hit by coppers’s fire or by that of the gunnies.

Texas loses again in US court in bid to block Syrian refugees
[Ynet] Texas suffered another loss in its attempts to block Syrian refugees from entering the state when a federal judge in Dallas on Thursday dismissed motions filed by the state to halt resettlement of refugees by a private relief agency.

US District Judge David Godbey ruled the US government, not individual states, has the authority to set immigration policy, and found that Texas brought no plausible argument to back its claims that the International Rescue Committee relief agency was unlawful in bringing Syrian refugees into the state.

Texas has been trying to stop the organization from bringing refugees into the state since December, when it filed its first suit in federal court in response to the group's plan to resettle six refugees fleeing Syria's civil war.

Russia announces 48-hour ceasefire in Syria’s Aleppo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Russia’s defense ministry announced late Wednesday that a 48-hour ceasefire had been introduced, starting from Thursday, to help stabilize the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo.

"On Russia’s initiative, a ’regime of silence’ has been introduced in Aleppo for 48 hours from 00:01 16 June (2100 GMT Wednesday) with the goal of lowering the level of armed violence and stabilizing the situation," a ministry statement said.

The statement did not specify who Russia has discussed the two-day ceasefire with.

It accused al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra

Countries in visa-free travel program not sharing terror info
I read the entire article and not once did the reporter ask, nor did anyone interviewed answer, "Why are these countries not sharing data?"
More than a dozen countries participating in a program that allows visitors into the U.S. without a visa are not sharing terrorists’ identities and other vital information as required by law, according to a watchdog report raising concerns on Capitol Hill about yet another major security gap.

“This is very dangerous because for the most part, these are allies, some of which have pockets of Islamic radicalism,” Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., chairman of the House national security subcommittee, told FoxNews.com.

The Visa Waiver Program lets business travelers and tourists with passports from 38 countries fill out a basic online form to enter the U.S. The biographical questionnaire can be filled out at the airport.

Feds, Luna County Sheriff say 'Islamic refugee' report is false
Follow-up to this story from yesterday. Good find, Procopius2k.
[KRQENews] ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — A sensational report of a New Mexico sheriff’s deputy arresting an undocumented “Islamic refugee” who had gas pipeline plans with her as she crossed the desert near the border appears to be unfounded.

The report cited involvement by the FBI, U.S. Border Patrol and the Luna County Sheriff. Each of those law enforcement agencies told KRQE News 13 that there’s no evidence the incident ever happened.

Still, the article has been widely shared across social media since it was published Wednesday on the website of the conservative group Judicial Watch. The organization says it “promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law.” After repeated calls and emails asking for comment, a spokesman for Judicial Watch said the group stands by its story.

Afghanistan
5 militants killed in Uruzgan airstrike
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least five Death Eaters were killed in an Arclight airstrike carried out by the Afghan Air Force in southern Uruzgan province.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the Arclight airstrike was carried out in the village of Sang Andaz in Charchino district targeting the hideout of the terrorists.

The anti-government armed krazed killer groups including the Taliban gunnies have not commented regarding the report so far.

Uruzgan is among the relatively volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where anti-government armed krazed killer groups are actively operating in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

At least 9 Talibs including the group’s two top leaders were killed during separate festivities with the Afghan cops in this province late last month.

The 205th Atal Corps of the Afghan National Army said the group’s shadow governor Mawlavi Jan Agha and military commission chief Asadullah were among those killed.

In the meantime, the Talibs carried out a deadly attack on the Afghan army posts in Dehrawood district, leaving at least 10 soldiers martyred and 12 others missing.

Pakistan can't tolerate increasing India-Afghan friendly ties: Karzai
[DAWN] Former Afghan president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
said Pakistain does not want good relations between India and Afghanistan and wants "no bilateral trade and no access to Central Asia for India" which is unacceptable for Afghanistan.

In an interview with BBC Urdu on Thursday, Karzai claimed that India is helping Afghanistan build its infrastructure and health facilities and has "filled Afghanistan with money despite being a poor country".

"India wants to truly befriend Afghanistan and we want Pakistain to do the same," said the former Afghan president.

Ex-Klingon officer facing jail in Italy hung out to dry, claims Clinton, DoS ignored her pleas
[FOX] A former CIA officer and diplomat who has repeatedly denied playing a role in one of the most notorious U.S. counterterrorism programs is set to become the only American held accountable for it -- and claims the Obama administration has abandoned her.

Sabrina De Sousa, who is stuck in Portugal and awaiting extradition to Italy over her alleged role in the rendition of a terror suspect years ago, claims the State Department has ignored repeated requests to intervene on her behalf. She and her lawyers are particularly critical of Hillary Clinton, who still has not commented on the case.
Shouldn't have stayed in Portugal...
Mark S. Zaid, an attorney who previously worked with De Sousa, told FoxNews.com his firm made "multiple efforts" to reach out to the State Department -- specifically then-Secretary of State Clinton -- and that "every time we were completely rebuffed with silence."

He said one of his letters was even "deceptively" classified "to limit my ability to create a public furor over how Sabrina had been and continues to be mistreated."

De Sousa, a naturalized American from India, was arrested in Portugal last October and earlier this month lost her latest court bid to halt her extradition to Italy. She faces four years in prison there over her alleged role in the rendition of a suspected terrorist 13 years ago.

ISIS Deploys Waves Of Suicide Bombers As Libya Stronghold Poised To Fall
[DAILYCALLER] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
unleashed two waves of jacket wallahs on pro-government Libyan forces in a last ditch defense of the group’s stronghold in the country.

More than 16 pro-government Libyan militia fighters were killed in the assault while continuing to rid ISIS from its coastal stronghold in the city of Sirte. ISIS has killed around 180 Libyan militia fighters since the siege began in May, though the terrorist group has lost significant ground in the last few weeks.

Libyan forces have retaken the city’s air base, port and several barracks. They also secured a symbolic victory by knocking down a stage in the middle of the city that was once used by ISIS to conduct executions and beheadings.

ISIS forces remaining in Sirte have more or less been cornered, but that does not mean they are not dangerous. As has been the case in Iraq, when ISIS loses territory, it can still strike with deadly force through suicide kabooms behind enemy lines.

Daesh still slaughtering Izadis in Iraq, Syria: UN panel
[Iran Press TV] A United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
investigative panel has urged action against crimes committed by the ISIS terrorist group against the Izadi minority in Iraq and Syria, stressing that the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
snuffies are still committing genocide against the Kurdish-speaking community.

Paulo Pinheiro, head of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, issued the warning in a Thursday report, which was based on interviews with dozens of survivors.

ISIS has been systematically capturing Izadis in Iraq and Syria since August 2014 in an attempt to "erase" the minority group "through killings, sexual slavery, enslavement, torture and inhuman and degrading treatment and forceful transfer," which have all inflicted "serious bodily and mental harm" on the people, Pinheiro told a news briefing in the Swiss city of Geneva.

"Genocide has occurred and is ongoing," the UN official said, adding, "ISIS (ISIS) has subjected every Yazidi (Izadi) woman, child or man that it has captured to the most horrific of atrocities."

Scientists reverse memory loss in Alzheimer's patients
Memory loss in Alzheimer's patients has been reversed with a tailor-made combination of diet, medication and and lifestyle changes, scientists claim.

A small study of 10 patients found they all showed improvements in their memories within the first few months - and increasingly so over a two-year period, for some.

Some patients taking part had stopped working, or been struggling with their jobs at the time they joined the study.

All have since been able to return to their jobs or continue working, with improved performance.

The findings, published in the journal Aging, claim to be the first to suggest memory loss in patients can be reversed, and improvement sustained.

The treatment involved a complex, 36-point therapeutic programme, combining comprehensive diet changes, brain stimulation, exercise, sleep optimisation, specific drugs and vitamins, and other steps affecting brain chemistry.

No single drug has been found to stop or even slow the progression of Alzheimer's, while drugs have only had modest effects on symptoms.

The new research was a collaboration between the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the UCLA Easton Laboratories for Neurodegenerative Disease Research.

Study leader Dr Dale Bredesen hopes it could pave the way for the first effective treatment for the disease since it was first described more than 100 years ago.

He said his approach is personalised, tailored to each individual patient - and is based on extensive testing to help determine the best therapies for each patient's brain.

Daesh terrorists serving Western imperialism: Analyst
[Iran Press TV] The recent warnings by American officials about the surge in threats posed by the ISIS Takfiri

terrorist group amount to nothing but "fear-mongering" as ISIS is a Western creation, says an American political analyst in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
Stephen Lendman, an author and radio host, made the remarks after US Department of Homeland Security urged citizens in America to exercise more vigilance following the deadly attack in Orlando, Florida.

Last Sunday, an alleged ISIS sympathizer identified as Omar Mateen, killed 49 people in Orlando’s Pulse Club being bumped off by specialized SWAT units.

CIA Director John Brennan was also set to appear before Congress on Thursday, warning the politicians about attempts by ISIS to send hard boyz to Western countries.

Lendman said Western officials were engaged in a widespread fear-mongering campaign by using ISIS as an excuse to expand their imperial grip on the world.

They are "hyping fear, scaring the public into believing something, a threat that simply doesn’t exist," he told Press TV on Thursday.

Israel ex-defense minister says to run for PM
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Israel’s ex-defense minister Moshe Yaalon on Thursday said he will run for premier accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of scaring citizens in order to hold on to power.

Yaalon, forced out in May to allow Netanyahu to expand his coalition by bringing in a hardline nationalist party, has repeatedly criticized the current government since leaving office.

"The current leadership must stop scaring citizens as if we are on the verge of a second Holocaust," Yaalon told a conference in Herzliya, Israel, saying security threats were being exaggerated.

Israel "deserves a leadership that stops zigzagging and encouraging hate between different groups in Israeli society to remain in power at any price," he added.

In the remarks broadcast online Yaalon added: "My intent is to run for the leadership of Israel in the next elections" which are due to take place in 2019 at the latest.

There has been speculation that a new center-right party could be formed, with polls showing that one including Yaalon could pose a challenge to the Likud party, to which he and Netanyahu belong.
Israeli politics is a full contact sport full of posturing drama queens, very little of which matters outside the country. The only thing I take from this is that Israeli voters are continuing to shift to the right on national security issues, away from the labour socialists.

Woman in Multan attacks man with acid for refusing marriage proposal
[DAWN] MULTAN: Police on Thursday incarcerated
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
a 36-year-old woman in Multan for throwing acid on a man allegedly for refusing her marriage proposal.

According to police, the woman reportedly threw acid on a 24-year-old youth after calling him at her house on Wednesday night.

Investigations reveal that the woman was angry at the victim for allegedly refusing her marriage proposal and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace after committing the crime. She was, however, arrested on Thursday, police said.

The acid attack victim received 50 per cent burns and was shifted to Nishter Hopsital where police recorded his statement.

The victim's father claims that the woman is already married and has four children but still wanted to marry his son.

Between 150 and 400 cases of acid attacks are reported in Pakistain every year.

As many as 80 per cent of the victims are women, and almost 70 per cent are below 18. Such attacks are not aimed at killing the victim but to cause disfigurement, and often cause blindness, hearing loss and physical and mental pain.

Gunmen Storm Paghman Mosque, Three Civilians Killed
Gunmen on Wednesday stormed a mosque in Paghman district of Kabul province killing at least three people and wounding three others.

The attack happened while the people were praying inside the mosque. The gunmen were apparently wearing military uniforms.

"We were praying when they opened fire, they killed our friends. I was near the window and escaped from there," eye witness Ezmarai Khan said.

"The security situation is deteriorating in the area. Landmines are exploding, bridges are being blown up, they even attacked us inside the mosque," Paghman resident Mohammad Imran said.

It is said that two of the dead in the mosque attack were government employees.

Shaifullah, a resident of Paghman whose brother was also killed in the attack, said that the presence of Daesh and Taliban in Paghman is concerning.

"They killed several police officers near the bridge, but no one cares about it. The government is lying when they tell us everything is OK in Paghman, Daesh and Taliban are in Paghman, " he said.

Kabul police have so far not commented on the issue.

Constructing gate on Torkham border is not violation of any agreement: Aziz
[DAWN] Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
on Thursday told the National Assembly that Pakistain is not breaching any agreement by constructing a gate on Torkham border and will go on with the project to make effective border management possible.

In his policy statement, Aziz claimed that Pakistain had informed the Afghan authorities about its intention to build the gate and the construction work had started back in November 2014.

"When Afghan authorities expressed their reservations, we took them into confidence and told them that the gate is constructed inside Pak territory," said the Adviser.

He said such border management steps will also help both countries in their combined efforts to combat terrorism as "unregulated movement allows infiltration of bully boyz and smugglers", adding that all the other border crossings with Afghanistan will also be regulated in near future.

Huge US facial recognition database flawed
[FRANCE24] The FBI's facial recognition database has more than 400 million pictures to help its criminal investigations, but lacks adequate safeguards for accuracy and privacy protection, a congressional audit shows.

The huge database -- which enables Sherlocks to automatically search images for criminal suspects -- "is far greater than had previously been understood" and raises concerns "about the risk of innocent Americans being inadvertently swept up in criminal investigations," said Senator Al Franken, who requested the study.

"I will be asking tough questions about the FBI's use of facial recognition technology and its plans to improve the testing, transparency, and privacy protections of its system," the Minnesota senator said as he released the Government Accountability Office report on Wednesday.

The FBI's database includes some 30 million criminal mugshots and 140 million images from visa applications by foreign nationals, the GAO found.

It also contains drivers' license pictures from 16 US states and 6.7 million photos from the Defense Department's biometric identification system of individuals detained by US forces abroad, among others.

The price of the Obama Doctrine
[DONSURBER.BLOGSPOT] For the second time in two months, Jeffrey Goldberg of Atlantic Monthly has tried to explain the Obama Doctrine.

The trouble is, the Obama Doctrine does not exist. It is a fairy tale, a unicorn, that homework assignment that the dog ate. President B.O. has no foreign policy other than outsourcing it to the next president. He sees no reason to expend any political capital whatsoever on foreign policy and given how the Democratic Party trashed his predecessor, I can see Obama's point.

Swedish woman allegedly forced Afghan boys to have sex on camera
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A Swedish woman has allegedly forced two Afghan boys to have sex with her on camera in a refugee home where the two were kept, it has been reported.

The boys also claim that the woman threatened them with deportation if they refused to have sex with her, according to the local newspaper, Eskilstuna Kuriren.

The source further added that the woman was encouraging the boys to film the sexual scene to watch it and call her with they missed her.

The woman has rejected the allegations against her but the newspaper which has achieved the films has reported that the acts and the perpetrator can be clearly identified.

The two boys have been identified as Omid and Tariq but the identity of the woman who is currently investigated for the offence has not been disclosed.

"The boss at the home forced us into it and exploited us for sex. She knew we had to, and that nobody would help us," one of the boys quoted in a report by MailOnline said.

The boys claim they had sex with the woman on four or five occasions, at a hotel and in her own home in the Sörmland region.

On one occasion all three were in bed together, they say, but mostly one of the boys had sex with the woman while the other filmed.

This is the first time reports have emerged regarding the alleged sexual abuse of the Afghan boys by a Swedish woman although numerous incidents involving sexual abuse of women and girls by the migrants colonists have emerged from parts of the Europe providing asylum protection to the refugees.

Turkey to install new air defense systems on Syria border
Turkey is set to install new air defense systems at the Elbeyli border crossing in Turkey’s southeastern province of Kilis, as rocket attacks originating from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)-held regions across the border in Syria have taken the lives of 21 civilians in the province this year.

Developed by Aselsan, the country’s leading defense manufacturer, the counter-mortar “Serhat” radar system and self-propelled “Korkut” air defense gun system were recently installed at the Öncüpınar border crossing in Kilis, as part of plans by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to upgrade border security. According to reports by Turkish daily Habertürk, the systems will now be installed at the Elbeyli border crossing in Kilis.

Korkut, which has a rate of fire of 1100 rounds per minute, is expected to destroy rockets some four kilometers before they hit the ground, in cases where they are unnoticed by unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as drones.

Moreover, two batteries of Aselsan’s High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) will also be brought to Kilis alongside armed drones.

Meanwhile, efforts to seal off a 70-kilometer strip of Turkey’s border that stretches from just east of the Turkish town of Kilis to Karkamış were nearing an end, while a physical security system will soon be installed. According to reports, the wall’s construction continues in the southeastern provinces of Kilis, Gaziantep, Hatay, Şanlıurfa and Mardin.

The structure, 70 percent of which is now complete, will be five meters high – including four meters of concrete and a meter of razor wire. The border will be monitored 24/7 with unmanned bubbled surveillance systems dubbed “mini zeppelins,” also developed by Aselsan.

The surveillance system enables immobile facilities such as small units and posts to monitor local security and give early warnings. Coming in two different models, the surveillance system can convey images over a 360-degree area in real-time to the control station, with day and night cameras.

ISIL rocket attacks have claimed the lives of 21 since Jan. 18, including eight Syrians, in Kilis, while more than 80 people have been wounded.

Lavrov made the remarks at the meeting of a panel discussion on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2016 (SPIEF 2016) on Thursday.

Washington has asked Moscow not to conduct Arclight airstrikes against the Nusra Front.

Lavrov said the US claims to be unable to pull the opposition groups out of the territories controlled by terrorists.

"I have the impression that some game is being played here and they want perhaps to preserve al-Nusra in some form and then use it to overthrow" the government of Assad, he added.

Libya car bombing kills 10 anti-ISIS fighters
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A suicide boom-mobileing on Thursday killed 10 members of forces allied to Libya's unity government who are fighting the ISIS hard boy group, hospital sources said.

"Ten dead and seven maimed were brought in... after a suicide kaboom carried out by ISIS (ISIS) in Abu Grein," 130 kilometres (80 miles) west of the coastal city of Sirte, said a source at the central hospital in Misrata, from where the pro-unity government forces have launched an offensive.

The forces allied to the Government of National Accord (GNA) captured the town of Abu Grein on May 17 as they advanced on Sirte, the hard boys' stronghold in Libya.

Thirty-two people were killed and 50 maimed in a car-kaboom in Abu Grein the next day targeting the forces allied with the GNA.

The military command of the anti-ISIS operation said that two other car-bombings inside Sirte itself were foiled on Thursday.

ISIS jihadis crucify civilians for breaking Ramadan fast

ERBIL – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) arrested a number of civilians in Syria’s northeastern Deir ez-Zor province for breaking the Ramadan fast, activists and eyewitnesses reported on Thursday.

The arrestees were publicly flogged then crucified in the city of al-Mayadeen in Deir ez-Zor on Thursday evening.

“The ISIS-led Hisba Police arrested 11 people in Mayadeen for breaking the Ramadan fast. They were flogged with 50 lashes each, and then crucified in the market square downtown,” local media activist Yassir al-Farhan told ARA News.

“Hundreds of people witnessed the brutal punishment. ISIS is trying to terrorise the people through conducting such punishments in public,” the source said.

Eyewitnesses told ARA News that an ISIS official from the Sharia Court of Deir ez-Zor read a statement to the public before flogging and crucifying the victims, saying there is no excuse for any Muslim citizen to break the fast of holy Ramadan.

Similar cases were reported in the city of Abu Kamal, where ISIS militants punished at least eight civilians by crucifying them on electricity poles for deliberately breaking fast.

Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, media activist Saray ad-Din reported that since the start of Ramadan, ISIS brutal crackdown on civilians has mounted in the province.

“According to ISIS rules, every citizen, no matter his/her age or health condition, is obliged to fast Ramadan, otherwise would be punished by flogging and crucifixion,” the local activist said.

Bodies of 34 migrants, including 20 children, found in Niger desert
That's one way to reduce competition when the population pressure gets to be a bit much...
[FRANCE24] The bodies of 34 migrants colonists, including 20 children, who were abandoned by people smugglers while trying to reach neighbouring Algeria were found in the Niger desert last week, authorities said Wednesday.

"Thirty-four people, including five men, nine women and 20 children died trying to cross the desert," Niger's interior ministry said in a statement.

"They probably died of thirst, as is often the case, and they were found near Assamaka," a security source told AFP, referring to a border post between Niger and Algeria.

"(The migrants colonists) were abandoned by people smugglers," the statement added, and only two of the bodies have so far been identified -- a man and a 26-year-old woman both from Niger.

Temperatures in the region can reach a brutal 42 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit), with blinding sandstorms tearing across the desert.

The hostile conditions mean that only a fraction of those who die trying to cross the area are ever found.

In Orlando killer's hometown, Muslims endure slurs, insults
[DAWN] Since the Orlando massacre, the small Moslem community of Fort Pierce, Florida -- the killer's hometown -- has found itself the target of hate-filled insults and abuse.
Those are way worse than being slaughtered by the dozen.
"Scumbags!" -- the phrase is hurled from a pickup truck rolling by the Fort Pierce Islamic Center, housed in what was once a church.

As the faithful arrive at the center, passing cars honk and their occupants fling out profanity-laced slurs against Islam -- including not-so-veiled death threats.

Fort Pierce's only other mosque, located along a highway, is in a totally anonymous building behind an auto dealership.

But anyone who didn't know of the Islamic Center's existence before Sunday's bloodbath at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, can't miss it now.

Journalists and TV crews are camped outside for several hours a day, drawing attention to the centre where the killer, Omar Mateen, attended mosque as recently as last Friday.

"We're scared," said Bedar Bakht, a taciturn Pak in his 50s who prepares the evening Iftar dinner at which the faithful break their daylong fast during this Moslem holy month of Ramazan.

Many stay until nearly midnight for what is normally a time of celebration, but now they leave the building in groups when it is time to go home -- as a precaution, Bakht said.

"A couple of weeks down the line, things will be back to normal. But right now it's new. People are calling, leaving stupid messages," he said.

Never that they might reform their ways, try to better prevent terrorists in their midst, join the military in droves to prove their love of their new country (the way most other immigrant groups in America work).

But then Islam isn't a race like other immigrants its an ideal just as America isn't a ethnic based nation state like other countries, it's an ideal. Those two sets of ideals seem incompatible.

#10  It is time to consider that being phobic about islam isn't a bad idea. Essentially, we are expected to somehow discern the passive adherent from those that through taqqiya and kitman appear peaceful. That somehow, we need precise diagnostic tools that work in a screening interview so that we can admit the one and not the other, not mentioning those who blossom into jihadi's here due to the bile in their Mosques or online. Gee, perhaps a little bias against a potential threat seems reasonable. Dom Raso: 'The AR-15 Is A Citizen's Best Defense Against Terrorism'
[Federalist] In the wake of the Orlando terrorist attack, the deadliest strike on U.S. soil since 9/11, Democratic lawmakers and progressive activists have responded by attempting to limit access to firearms -- particularly the AR-15, which was incorrectly reported as the weapon the terrorist used to kill at least 49 people and injure another 53.

In a new video, former Navy SEAL Dom Raso explains why the AR-15, the most popular rifle in the country, gives Americans the best chance of surviving in an age of terror.

"The only way for us to stay free was by having whatever guns the bad guys have," he said. "This firearm gives average people the advantage they so desperately need and deserve to protect their life, liberty, and happiness."

Iraq
Masrour Barzani: Post-ISIS Iraq should be split in three
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Once ISIS is defeated, Iraq should be divided into three separate entities to prevent further sectarian bloodshed, with a state each given to Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds, a top Kurdish official said on Thursday.

Iraqi troops have expelled ISIS from some key cities the murderous Moslems seized in 2014, and are advancing on djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the largest city under IS control. Its fall would likely mean the end of the group's self-proclaimed caliphate.

But even if ISIS was eliminated, Iraq would still be deeply divided. Sectarian violence has continued for years and a power-sharing agreement in Baghdad has only led to discontent, deadlock and corruption.

Masrour Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Security Council and son of KRG President Massoud Barzani
... hereditary head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, maybe a little too close to the Medes and the Persians for most people's tastes...
, said the level of mistrust was such that they should not remain "under one roof".

"Federation hasn't worked, so it has to be either confederation or full separation," Barzani told Rooters in an interview on Wednesday in the Kurdish capital Erbil. "If we have three confederated states, we will have equal three capitals, so one is not above the other."

The Kurds have already taken steps towards realizing their long-held dream of independence from Iraq, which has been led by the Shi'ite majority since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, in 2003, following a US-led invasion.

They run their own affairs in the north and have their own armed forces, the Peshmerga, which have been fighting ISIS murderous Moslems with help from a US-led coalition. Sunnis should be given the option of doing the same in the provinces where they are in the majority in the north and the west of Iraq, said Barzani.

"What we are offering is a solution," he said. "This doesn't mean they live under one roof but they can be good neighbors. Once they feel comfortable that they have a bright and secure future, they can start cooperating with each other."

His father has called for a referendum on Kurdish independence this year as the region is locked in territorial and financial disputes with the central government.

Baghdad has cut off payments from the federal budget to the KRG to try to force the Kurds to sell crude produced on their territory through the state oil marketing company and not independently. The Kurds also claim the oil region of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
in northern Iraq, as part of their territory.

Barzani said that the Sunnis' feeling of marginalization by the Shi'ite leadership had facilitated the takeover of their regions by ISIS Death Eaters.

In addition, Iraq endured months of wrangling and chaos over a government reshuffle that was to curb corruption. In May, frustration over the delays culminated in the unprecedented breach by protesters of the Green Zone, which houses parliament, government offices and many foreign embassies.

Ahead of the battle for Mosul, Barzani said the city's different communities should agree in advance on how to handle the aftermath. Mosul's pre-war population of 2 million was mostly Sunni, but included religious and ethnic minorities including Christians, Shi'ites, Yazidis, Kurds and Turkmen.

"I think the most important part is how you manage Mosul after Da’esh is defeated," he said, referring to an Arabic name of ISIS. "We don't want to see the gap of liberation and then a vacuum, which probably will turn into chaos."

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi at the end of last year expressed hope that 2016 would be the year of "final victory" over ISIS with the capture of Mosul.

Champ visits families in Orlando, Biden in tow.
[CVT] ORLANDO, Fla. -- Embracing grieving Orlando families and appealing anew for national action, President Barack Obama claimed a threat to all Americans' security Thursday as a strong reason to tighten U.S. gun laws.

Counterterror campaigns overseas, he declared, can never prevent all "lone wolf" attacks like the one that killed 49 people in Orlando.

Speaking at a makeshift memorial to the victims, Obama said the massacre at a gay nightclub was evidence that "different steps" are needed to limit the damage a "deranged" person set on committing violence can do. He cheered on Democrats' push for new gun control measures, including a new ban on assault weapons and stricter background checks.

Although he showed little hope the measures would find much support among most opponents, Obama seemed to be aiming for other lawmakers, perhaps Republican hawks eager to get behind counterterror campaigns but steadfastly opposed to gun restrictions.

#1  The TV visit of Obama and Biden in Orlando showed a long line of black cars and Obama and Biden carrying flowers somewhere, but what it didn't show was ANY people attending the event. Just empty streets for what looked like two blocks all around the event..and the flowers, and stuff ( and Biden doing the carrying ). And Obama and Biden standing out of the sun near a podium inside an open tent with NOBODY else in camera range... the whole place EMPTY of citizens.
Who're they actually speaking TO ? The speech by Obama was read in a monotone and turn the page ( no teleprompter) but no actual people anywhere either. Just empty for two blocks in every direction....wherever the cameras actually focused.

No attendance by anybody. WAS anybody actually THERE? Nobody even came down to see and hear the President of the United States ? Just a dead speech ( what did Obama actually SAY ? (Anybody remember what the greatest speaker since Cairo or Lincoln, said in such a touching moment ? )

Nobody there. Obama talking to an empty tent...not even any chairs. And a view of two blocks and way out of pistol range ...Orlando beyond a circle of Black Cars.

And he was consoling the dead relatives? I must have missed that. Actually getting close enough to the President to maybe touch him...or have him touch you back...how would you like to have Obama "touch" you? Any social media pictures of anybody close enough to the President during this event / No? I wonder why.

White House sees surge in Syrian refugee admissions this year
The Obama administration believes it will be able to process many more Syrian refugees in the last half of fiscal 2016 than in the first six months, allowing it to meet its goal of admitting at least 10,000 by Sept. 30.
If one, just one, of these folks commits an Orlando-style massacre the blowback will be something the likes of which we haven't seen in this country.
In a letter to Democratic Senator Richard Durbin seen by Reuters on Thursday, the White House said it has allocated additional staff and added more processing locations in the Middle East to expedite the screening process without compromising U.S. security.
No extra staff to secure the border. No extra staff for the VA hospitals. No extra staff to get the interpreters who helped our troops. But for this we have extra staff...
"Therefore, we expect to admit more Syrians in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal year 2016 than we did in the first and second quarters to meet our goal of admitting at least 10,000 Syrian refugees this fiscal year," the letter said.

The administration's move is in sharp contrast to recent anti-refugee rhetoric by many Republicans, especially since the killings in Orlando on Sunday raised fears of attacks.

Donald Trump, the presumptive 2016 Republican presidential nominee, has called for the refugee resettlement program to be suspended, saying "We don't know who they are. They have no documentation, and we don't know what they're planning."

Backers of the administration's plan dispute such statements, citing the extensive screening process the Syrian refugees undergo.
Really? Like the one the cleared Omar Mateen? Twice?
So far, the United States has offered refuge to far fewer of the millions fleeing the war in Syria than many of its closest allies. Germany has taken in hundreds of thousands and Canada admitted nearly 30,000 between November 2015 and May 1, 2016.

The letter said the administration had set up a temporary processing center in Jordan and expanded operations in Turkey. It also has restarted interviews in neighboring Lebanon, and begun limited processing in Erbil, Iraq.

Durbin was a lead author of a letter to President Barack Obama in May, which was signed by more than half the Democrats in the Senate and urged the president to move more quickly to admit Syrians.
So that they can vote in November...
By mid-May, only 1,736 Syrians had been allowed into the country, a pace that would have fallen far short of the 10,000 goal for the full year.

The letter seen on Thursday was the administration's response to the one sent in May.

Obama's plan to admit 10,000 Syrians was met with a firestorm of criticism in the United States, mostly from Republicans who say that violent militants could enter the country by posing as refugees. More than 30 governors, most of them Republicans, have tried to keep refugees out of their states.

Bernie Sanders Not Being Vetted as Hillary Clinton's Running Mate
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is among a group of Democratic officials being considered

Hillary Clinton’s campaign isn’t considering primary rival Bernie Sanders as her running mate, but is actively looking at Sen. Elizabeth Warren, whose populist politics line up closely with Mr. Sanders, people familiar with the process said.

The vetting remains in its early stages. So far, potential candidates have been scrutinized using publicly available information. The Clinton team hasn’t asked anyone to submit tax returns or other personal information, one of the people said. Conversations with Mrs. Clinton herself about options are just now beginning.

Beyond the Massachusetts senator, other prospective candidates include Labor Secretary Tom Perez; Housing and Urban Development Secretary JuliĂĄn Castro; Sens. Tim Kaine of Virginia, Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Cory Booker of New Jersey; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Reps. Xavier Becerra of California and Tim Ryan of Ohio, several Democrats said."

Very hot drinks ‘probably’ cause cancer: UN agency
[DAWN] Drinking very hot coffee and other drinks "probably" causes cancer of the oesophagus, a UN agency said on Wednesday, but lifted suspicion from a cup at "normal serving temperatures".

For some types of cancer, there were hints that coffee might even be beneficial, said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) -- but not if consumed hotter than 65 degrees Celsius.

A review of over 1,000 studies concluded that drinking "very hot" beverages was "probably carcinogenic to humans", said the agency.

"It doesn’t matter what the liquid is. What matters is the temperature," said epidemiologist Dana Loomis, who took part in the review of the world’s most popular hot drinks.

Residents clash in Chitral over Kalash girl’s ‘forced’ conversion to Islam
[DAWN] Hundreds of local residents clashed with members of Kalash tribe in Chitral on Thursday after a teenager claimed she was forced to convert to Islam, police and residents said.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd attacking a house in the Kalash tribe's valley of Bumburate in Chitral district, where the girl had gone to give a police statement about her conversion, said Kalash activist Luke Rehmat.

The Kalash are only around 4,000 in number, according to Rehmat

Increasingly their youth are converting to Islam, prompting activists to campaign to preserve the traditions of the ancient, diminishing tribe.

The teenager went to a neighbour's house to speak to police, the home's owner told AFP, but hundreds of people began to gather outside as word spread through the close-knit community.

"The Kalash community had also gathered to save the family and when the Moslems chanting slogans attacked the house with sticks and pelted stones everybody was running for their lives," Rehmat, who was out of breath from fleeing the scene, told AFP by telephone.

"Dozens" were maimed, he said, though apparently none seriously.

"Law enforcement agencies reached here on time otherwise they would have killed all of us," said local Kalash politician Imran Kabeer.

It was not clear what happened to the teenager.

Police in the city of Chitral said the district police chief had gone to Bumburate with other senior officers, adding that the situation was under control.

The owner of the house that was attacked was also in Chitral, where he said police were refusing to let him return home.

"They came out in a mob to attack my house and to kill my wife and my children," he said, asking to remain anonymous.

"They threw stones at the roof and at the windows. Police were firing in the air."

Chitral, a northern district of Khyber-Pukhtunkwa province, has long attracted tourists for its beauty.

Arabia
Saudi ‘does not care’ about UN’s Yemen report source
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Saudi’s envoy to the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
said on Thursday that the Arab-led coalition "does not care" to know the sources of information cited their report, which claimed children had been targeted in war-torn Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
last year.

Abdullah al-Mouallimi insisted in an interview with Al Arabiya News Channel that instead, the coalition cares about accuracy of the information contained in the report.

The envoy added that he is confident that the dispute with the UN "is just a summer cloud that will quickly pass and it will end in reaching a solution that ends with a convincing solution for all."

On Wednesday, the UN said it will not give the Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
-led coalition in Yemen the sources of information that briefly led the coalition to be put on a blacklist, before it was withdrawn.

No threats
UN front man Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that it is "paramount" to protect sources of information used in any UN report, especially in a conflict area.

Last Thursday, UN Secretary -General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon said he removed the US-backed coalition from the pending joint review of cases. He accused some unnamed countries of exerting unacceptable and "undue pressure."

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
Mouallimi rubbished these comments, saying "we don’t use threats or intimidation," and that Riyadh was "very committed to the United Nations."

On Wednesday, Mouallimi sent a letter thanking the secretary-general for removing the coalition from the blacklist and said it "deeply regrets every human casualty in Yemen and reaffirms its commitment to taking every possible measure to protect all civilians."

It notes that the monitoring of violations against children is to be done in cooperation "with national governments and relevant UN and civil society actors" and has to include an overview of the methodology and modality that were used to create the numbers in the report."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Fighting continues in northern Aleppo
[ARA News] ALEPPO – Clashes broke out on Thursday between Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Islamist fighters in the city of Aleppo, in northern Syria.

The clashes erupted after Islamist fighters of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement and al-Nusra Front [al-Qaeda branch in Syria] tried to infiltrate into the YPG-held Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo.

“Nine Islamists were killed in the clashes, where the YPG repelled their attempt to hit the Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud. Also, fourteen others were wounded and taken hostage by our units,” YPG spokesman Hassan Jammo told ARA News in Aleppo.

On the other hand, at least two YPG fighters and five civilians were reportedly injured in the clashes.

“Al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham started their offensive by firing mortar shells on residential buildings in Sheikh Maqsoud, and then tried to infiltrate into the district from the eastern axis, but our fighters responded by firing heavy machine guns. The extremist groups were eventually forced to withdraw,” the Kurdish official added.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
To gun lovers, you can't even have an opinion on assault rifles -- unless it's theirs
[NYDAILYNEWS] The gun debate is also a gender war.
Gertie Kuntzman doesn't know when to stop.
In all my years in journalism — coming up on 30 (thanks) — I have never received so much angry mail as I did after yesterday's story, "What is it like to fire an AR-15? It's horrifying, menacing and very very loud."
Maybe you did something egregious?
I don't mind spirited debate, but many correspondents told me that even expressing an opinion about today's high-powered weaponry is off-limits to those of us who don't own such guns.
It isn't off limits, because you managed to get your opinion published in a nationwide forum.
I don't have an opinion about ladies' feminine hygiene products, either. I know approximately as much about them as Gertie knows about guns.
To reiterate, the goal of the story was simply to share with readers my experience of firing an AR-15, which very few of them have done.
The ones who did know something about firing an AR-15 or any other gun were laughing, sneering, cursing, or whacking their foreheads, assuming they read further than the first paragraph or so,
I found the sheer power of the weapon horrifying.
It's a gun. Not even a particularly powerful gun, though powerful enough if you know how to use it.
I found the noise deafening and anxiety provoking. I was frightened by its potential for rapid, catastrophic, Orlando-like carnage with similar weaponry. Using an AR-15 made me irritable and jittery for hours afterwards.
You're saying you worked yourself into a hissy fit at the very thought of it? You went and rented a gun and expected to be scared pissless so you were?
To me, it felt like a bazooka.
A bazooka was a big old tube thingy you held over your shoulder and used to shoot a rocket at a tank. An AR-15 is a rifle, referred to generically as a "gun," which is properly an artillery piece or that big long thing sticking out of the front of a tank. The rifle weighs about 6.5 pounds, which is about the same as my little Marlin .22. Or it's a brand of bubblegum.
My guess is that Gershman has never been within 10 miles of a recoilless rifle or rocket launcher. He has no experience to speak of in that regard, so why make the simile? And more importantly, why stick to it?
"Kuntzman is an outright liar," wrote one emailer. "Nice try with an extremely stupid article which only appealed to girly boys and women of NYC and like the sheeple they are probably believed the lies." (Other writers informed me that the "lie" is that guns are bad. For the record: I never said they were.)
A lot you didn't say was implicit in your opinion.
But Gertie did imply that the AR-15 has an autogettem mode. It looks like an M-16, and in fact it's the immediate ancestor to the M-16, but it lacks a full auto capability. You'd have to rebuild the thing to put it in.
You're expecting Gertie to know something (anything) about what he is writing. Any good member of the MSM ([cough] Krugman [cough]) can demonstrate that isn't so. But the owner of the gun store (if in fact Gertie went to the gun store) could have shown and told him in about three seconds that the AR-15 is a single-shot, semi-automatic rifle that can't do full-auto or 3-round bursts. That would assume Gertie was told before the gun sounds deafened him and the blast blinded him...
We had the response of the owner of the gun store yesterday. He felt strongly that the original Gertie piece did not accurately depict his words or the events of that day.
I certainly received many many emails from gun owners who legitimately quibbled with some of my conclusions. But the majority of email senders trained their laser sights on my masculinity — often in graphic terms that would sound more appropriate in a magazine about erectile dysfunction or an ad for Depends.
Maybe he should reread what he wrote? It was pretty bad. He did everything but stick the tip of his finger in his mouth and utter "tee-hee!"
"Hey there Cupcake!" wrote Gary Haney. "I have never subscribed to the idea of 'gender confusion,' but after reading your article on the AR-15, I'm a believer because there is no way you and I are the same gender. You should surrender your testicles to the Department of Girlymen. I'm not sure where it's located, but your girlfriend Barack does!"
I don't know if I'd go so far as to call Gertie a girl. I know girls who probably had to change their underwear from laughing too hard at this sniveler.
Others sent me videos of 7-, 10- and 12-year old girls firing the same weapon I fired — except these kids were smiling.
They didn't show up expecting it to mow down a roomful of people without anyone pressing the trigger. So when you lack the steely fortitude and self-control of a seven year old girl, the word "girlyman" is more polite than coming right out and calling you a pencildick.
And I wear it as a point of personal pride that conservative darling Erick Erickson posted a story on The Resurgent with the headline, "My 10 Year Old Daughter Is Tougher Than Gersh Kuntzman, Author of the Stupidest Thing on the Internet Today."
I've got a seven year old granddaughter that could probably have handled the gun and the situation better than Gertie.
"You f--king pussy," wrote Sam Markota. "If you have a man card turn it in immediately. You might be better served writing about feminine hygiene products!!!"
Gertie may know more about them than us men with whiskers do.
"Your father must have left you to be raised by your mother or he was a sissy like you," added SargentMike77.
Sargent Mike misspelled sergeant. I ain't impressed with him, either.
And one of my favorites, thanks to its pithy manner of linking my affliction to another right wing obsession: "Maybe you can get some balls through Obamacare!" wrote Adam Prolo.
Probably you couldn't. If you could, it'd cost you an arm and a leg, so then where would you be? Lop-sided and scrotum heavy, that's where. Easier to eat Wheaties for breakfast and beefsteak for dinner, retire from journalism after thirty years, and go to O-o-o-oklahoma,

where the wind comes sweeping down the plain
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain
Dunno. He'd prolly have a coronary seeing all the NRA and USMC stickers on all the pickup trucks and SUVs. He'd be unhappy here, I would think.
And that's just the printable stuff.
I wasn't done singing yet!
To summarize, this line of argument suggests that I'm not a real man because I am frightened by the awesome power of an AR-15, which, despite however you willfully misread my story, can discharge dozens of rounds in mere seconds.
... assuming you pull the trigger many times in mere seconds. If you're actually aiming you shouldn't be squeezing (not pulling, dammit!) the trigger that fast. But, yeah, that does kinda sum it up.
It can't. You didn't bother learning about the AR and as it turns out, you lied about the gun shop owner and what he said.
Yes, this weapon scared the crap out of me.
Which is why people make fun of you, dumbass.
And it should scare the crap out of all of you, too.
It is a tool. A relatively good one, though if you want to buy me a present I'd rather have a Kimber.
My next build is going to be an AR-10 pattern semiautomatic, the recoil of which will make this guy break down in tears. You know, so rule .308 can be applied when the time comes.
An AR-15 is a weapon of mass destruction, a tool that should only be in the hands of our soldiers and cops, as Rep. Seth Moulton wrote in the Daily News on Tuesday.
"Weapons of mass destruction" are chemical, nuclear, and bacteriological. Equating a rifle than can kill four dozen with an atomic bomb that can snuff 100,000 is simply hysteria. It does not imply thought.
I don't think there's anything unmanly about pointing out this fact.
But the majority of the rest of us non-Manhattan dwellers do.
That's not a fact. It is an invitation to tyrants, big and small, to steal and murder, so that they can gain a monopoly of violence.
Besides, if masculinity is defined by the power to commit violence on a wide scale, I proudly choose femininity.
We noticed. I think that's one of the key points of departure for most of us...
At one time, “being a man” meant standing up for what you believe in — and against injustice. By that definition, we need more real men in power taking on bullies like the NRA, which seeks to bolster the Second Amendment by shutting down opponents’ right to the First. We can’t even debate guns in this country, thanks to the gun lobby.
You can't stand against real injustice if you are not armed, and you can't claim to be against injustice if your opinion means you favor arming those who would commit injustices.
"Global warming is real! Burn the heretics!"
"The word 'Trump' is written on the sidewalk in chalk! I need my safe space!"
Being a man means taking it when things are tough, overcoming the bad and sharing the good, kinda like those guys do in the movies, but consistently. Actual men grew up hearing the words "sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me" and believing them. Actual men do what they've got to do. Often they drink beer or whiskey, know how to use guns, swear, and all that sort of thing, though it's not a requirement.

My email and Internet trolls won't believe me, but I support the Second Amendment.
You're right. I don't. Believe you, that is.
I sincerely do believe that the Bill of Rights protects Americans' right to bear arms, albeit under very strict regulations — the "well-regulated militia" part of the sacred text.
So that merely implies the government's right to draft you?
Then you do not support the 2nd Amendment. You prefer the state have a monopoly of violence, which it will maintain in place of your rights. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is first and foremost an individual right, but you would rather the state regulate guns to the point where it and only it can deliver violence for its own purposes The idea that an individual has the Gawd given right to keep his own weapon for use against tyrants big and small, doesn't even enter into the calculation with the state regulating the possession of firearms.
And I even agree with one letter writer who pointed out that hammers can kill people, too, but we don't ban them.
Hammers and guns are both tools, of different trades, but both are beloved by hobbyists and skilled amateurs.
But what if a weapons manufacturer could fashion a handgun that would fire a nuclear blast — an atomic version of an AR-15, if you will. It would look like a gun, but it could kill thousands instead of dozens. Like a rifle, it's one of many arms that we are allowed to keep and bear. But would we really stand idly by as people buy a nuclear gun in the name of the Second Amendment?
It's a really stoopid example because it wouldn't be available to the citizenry, any more than fully automatic weapons are. Less, in fact, but that's a real scary frowny face on the strawman.
"It's just a gun," you might say. "It's my right. Trade in your man-card, you wimp."
He's down to drooling and spitting now.
Yes, I'm a wimp.
Good of you to admit what everybody else noticed right off.
I simpered because my experience with the AR-15 bruised me, body and spirit.
Go to your safe space. You may need grief counseling. Don't look down because there might be something written on the sidewalk.
But there's nothing unmanly about reminding my readers that mass murder is much easier to commit with a semi-automatic killing machine than it is with a hammer.
It's also easier to commit with a scythe.
If that makes me a girl, well, maybe we should have a girl running the country.
Victoria Woodhull, all is forgiven!
It should be noted that Gershman failed to mention in either of his screeds the fact that New York has some of the most draconian gun laws in the nation, and that the registration requirement in New York for the AR style of rifle was mainly ignored, to the tune of five percent registered total. That's in the area of statistical noise. Gershman also fails to note that universal background checks, which are the law in New York are the most likely reason why he and his crew were forced to go out of state to talk about ARs.
Gertie also knows that if we get to the point in this country where we have universal registration and "may issue" just for basic ownership, you and I will never be able to convince the local law enforcement officer that we need a gun, whereas he, his bosses, and their bodyguards will have guns any time they wish. Oh, and the government too, of course.

#8  I believe he wrote the article before he'd been to a gunshop and then when the news cycle became favorable he dropped into a gunshop to sprinkle names upon his article for authenticity (note the gunshop claims he totally misrepresented them).

I also suspect this latest article was pre-written as well because as a good lefty he knew he'd get a hostile response. Just write about how the cavemen attacked his opinions and sprinkle in a few facts.

I also think it's hysterical that he compared the AR-15 to a bazooka. As if he's ever fired a bazooka. More likely the Hollywood sound file version of a bazooka.

#13  Dear Mr? Kuntzman,
Please go back to that gun store and fire one rifle shot and one pistol shot for me at my expense. First shoot a 458 Winchester bolt action rifle. Be sure to hold it about 2 inches away from your shoulder so it doesn't hit your shoulder to hard. Then try a 50 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol with a Cor-Bon heavy hunting load. Be sure and use two hands to hold it so it is centered on your face.
Please send pictures when you are done.

CIA: ISIS working to send operatives to the West
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] CIA Director John Brennan will tell Congress on Thursday that ISIS forces of Evil are training and attempting to deploy operatives for further attacks on the West and will rely more on guerrilla-style tactics to compensate for their territorial losses.

In remarks prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee, Brennan says ISIS has been working to build an apparatus to direct and inspire attacks against its foreign enemies, as in the recent attacks in Gay Paree and Brussels ‐ ones the CIA believes were directed by ISIS leaders.

"ISIS (ISIS) has a large cadre of Western fighters who could potentially serve as operatives for attacks in the West," Brennan said, using another acronym for the group. He said ISIS probably is working to smuggle them into countries, perhaps among refugee flows or through legitimate means of travel.

Brennan also noted the group’s call for followers to conduct so-called lone-wolf attacks in their home countries. He called last week’s attack in Orlando a "heinous act of wanton violence" and an "assault on the values of openness and tolerance" that define the United States as a nation.

He said ISIS is gradually cultivating its various branches into an interconnected network. The branch in Libya is likely the most advanced and most dangerous, but ISIS is trying to increase its influence in Africa, he said. The IS branch in the Sinai has become the "most active and capable terrorist group in Egypt," attacking the Egyptian military and government targets in addition to foreigners and tourists, such as the downing of a Russian passenger jet last October.

Other branches have struggled to gain traction, he says. "The Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
branch, for instance, has been riven with factionalism. And the Afghanistan-Pakistain branch has struggled to maintain its cohesion, in part because of competition with the Taliban."

He called ISIS a "formidable adversary," but said the US-led coalition has made progress combatting the group, which has had to surrender large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and has lost some of its leaders in Arclight airstrikes. ISIS has struggled to replenish its ranks of fighters, Brennan said, because fewer of them are traveling to Syria and others have defected.

EgyptAir plane black box found, pulled out of water
[FOXNEWS] Egypt's investigation committee said a doomed plane's cockpit voice recorder was found and pulled from the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday.

Egypt on Wednesday said that it spotted and obtained images from the wreckage of the EgyptAir plane flying from Gay Paree to Cairo that crashed into the Mediterranean last month, killing all 66 people on board, according to a statement by the country's investigation committee.

The committee said in a statement that a vessel, the John Lethbridge, contracted by the Egyptian government to join search efforts for the data recorders and the wreckage "had identified several main locations of the wreckage." It added that it obtained images of the wreckage.

The next step, the committee said, will be drawing a map showing the wreckage location.

The vessel is equipped with sonar and other equipment capable of detecting wreckage at depths up to 6,000 feet (1,830 meters).

Obviously furious over criticism that his anti-terror policies are weak and that the Orlando slaughter proves it, he went on a televised tirade to let America know he’s mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.

He laid waste to a field of straw men, cable-TV pundits and the always-evil "partisan rhetoric," by which he means anyone who disagrees with him. It was a striking display of personal anger and pent-up grievances -- and a total failure of leadership during a national crisis.

It also, inadvertently, captured why Donald Trump was able to brawl his way to the GOP nomination. All his nice Republican rivals couldn’t stir voters because they never knew how to rattle Obama the way Trump is doing. The president didn’t mention Trump yesterday, but the whole speech was nothing but a desperate and incoherent reaction to Trumpism.

As such, it was a huge moment in the general-election campaign, even though it comes before the nominees are formally crowned. For one thing, it showed that Obama’s plan to campaign against Trump as if he is running for his own third term won’t be a cakewalk for the president or his legacy.

For another, the Obama-Trump war means Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edward Stettinius, Jr. ...
could be overshadowed in what was supposed to be her campaign for vindication. Throw in her husband and the stage is going to get crowded with alpha males competing for attention.

I have to disagree with Goodwin here. Although Trump's ability to get under Obama's thin skin was certainly an influential factor for some, I think a more important reason was his blunt, crude, plain-spoken and emphatic condemnation of Obama and his policies in contrast to other candidates' more cautious, "civil" criticisms. Trump's willingness to "tell it like it is", without mincing words, IMO gave him a huge advantage.

Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election in a landslide in large part because Americans were sick and tired of hearing the usual "mush from the wimp", Jimmy Carter, and Reagan provided a much-needed antidote. I suspect much the same thing has been at work with Trump against his primary-season opponents.

#3  Wow - Obama managed to hit most of the seven deadly sins of narcissism in one small tantrum.

1. Entitlement: Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves special. Defiance of their will is a narcissistic injury that can trigger narcissistic rage.
2. Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may re-inflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else. Bingo.
3. Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability by using contempt to minimize the other person. Double bingo.
4. Exploitation: He has no regard or true feelings for the victims of this current death and destruction - this tragedy is merely a vehicle to push his agenda.
5. Magical thinking: Use of distortion and illusion via construction of constant straw man arguments (the only argument he can win) in order to attempt to project and dump shame onto others.
6. Bad boundaries: Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all.
7. Shamelessness. 'Nuff said.

Personalized crises, Trump, the Wall, muslims, empty suits, fat pantsuited granny crooks, are all manufactured. Capturing and misdirecting voter energies is the plan.

Kerry Acknowledges That Some Terrorists Are ‘Radicalized for Reasons Having to do With Religion’
[CNSNEWS] Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
on Wednesday cited "reasons having to do with religion or politics" in a list of "root causes" of terrorism in which he also included factors ranging from tribalism to frustration and the desire for a sense of identity and purpose.
Goddam Lutherans. And Navajos. And teenagers.
Addressing the Oslo Forum in the Norwegian capital, Kerry disputed the notion that a "clash of civilizations" is underway, arguing that "there is nothing remotely civilized about the holy warriors that we confront in the world today" such as those in Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS/ISIS), Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
or Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
.

"So no, this is not a clash of civilizations, this is a struggle between civilization itself and barbarism, between fundamental raw political exploitation and a mix of medieval and modern fascism
...a political system developed in Italy symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
, together at the same time," he said.

Calling for a need to have a comprehensive approach to counter the "root causes of violent extremism," Kerry advanced some factors contributing to radicalization. Among them:

--tribal or sectarian allegiances
--"reasons having to do with religion or politics"
--frustration over an inability to find meaning or economic opportunity
--hopes that a group like ISIS can provide "a sense of identity, a sense of purpose, a sense of power"
--"indignity and marginalization and inequality and corruption" which are used by terrorist groups as recruitment tools
--"a dangerous clash which we haven’t yet fully defined sufficiently between culture, religion, exploitation, and modernity."
It's only been fifteen years. Where the hell's JFK been? Upriver in Cambodia?

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Air Strikes Target Aleppo Hours into Truce
Air strikes pounded through Syrian Opposition-held parts of Aleppo just hours into an announced 48-hour ceasefire and fighting carried on in and around the northern Syrian city, monitors and witnesses said.

Aleppo, Syria’s largest city before the civil war with a population of more than two million people, has been divided for years into the Opposition and and Bashar al-Assad supporting forces. Capturing the city is one of Assad’s key strategic objectives.

Russia, an ally of Syria, announced the truce there on Thursday but did not name parties who had agreed to it. There has been no public comment on the truce announcement from Assad’s forces or from factions fighting his forces.

The Britain-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said aerial bombardments hit a number of neighborhoods in the opposition-held sector and that there were reports of one death and some injuries.

“There were strikes on a number of residential areas causing fires and damage. The truce was supposed to have come into effect at 12 midnight, but now there is no truce,” Bebars Mishal, a civil defense chief working in rebel-held areas of Aleppo said.

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said an air strike had put one of Aleppo’s biggest hospitals out of service. It was not immediately clear if strikes had hit the 64-bed MSF-supported Omar Bin Abdulaziz hospital directly or nearby, and the extent of damage remains unknown.

MSF condemned the continued attacks on healthcare in Syria on its Twitter account and said it was “extremely worried about (the) potential impact on people’s access to healthcare” in the city.

Two residents in Aleppo said there had been a number of barrel bombs dropped from helicopters and aerial attacks on Thursday within the city.

The opposition-held part of Aleppo has been cut off in the past two weeks from the outside world as an escalation in air and artillery strikes on the only road in has made journeys perilous and put hundreds of thousands of people under effective siege.

North of Aleppo, air strikes have hit the villages of Anadan, Hayan and Hariyatan. South of Aleppo, ferocious fighting went on between the Syrian Opposition and Assad and allied forces, which include fighters from Lebanese so-called Hezbollah. This area has seen territory lost and gained by both sides this week.

Humanitarian organizations said the fighting was making it impossible to deliver aid. “The longer the fighting continues, the more people will suffer. In Aleppo the situation is already dire and it will get even more difficult,” a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

Eritrea claims it killed 200 in Ethiopia clash
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
claimed Thursday to have killed "more than 200" Æthiopians in a battle last week, the fiercest border festivities since a 1998-2000 war, while giving no mention of its own casualties.

Each side blames the other for starting the two-day battle which broke out on Sunday, saying also that their rival suffered the most losses.

There was no immediate response from Æthiopia, which has not released numbers killed.

"More than 200 TPLF (Æthiopian) troops have been killed and more than 300 maimed," Eritrea’s Ministry of Information said in a statement, calling it a "conservative estimate".

There was no mention of any prisoners of war.

Æthiopian government front man Getachew Reda on Tuesday said "there were significant casualties on both sides, but more on the Eritrean side."

Eritrea won independence from Æthiopia in 1991 after three decades of war, but returned to battle in 1998-2000, when nearly 80,000 died.

The neighbours are bitter enemies, with tens of thousands of troops dug into trenches eyeing each other along the heavily fortified frontier.

Open-ended, compulsory national service makes Eritrea one of the world’s most militarised nations, but with just five million citizens it is dwarfed by Æthiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation with some 96 million people.

UN Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday urged both governments to exercise "maximum restraint," and resolve differences through peaceful means. The United States has voiced similar "grave" concerns.

This looks really bad for Stanford
[NYPOST] Members of the Stanford University women’s swim team wanted to write to the judge overseeing the Brock Allen Turner sex-attack case about his creepy behavior -- but were reportedly "pressured" by school officials not to speak out.
Not sure the judge could have used a letter from the swimmers, but if the school did 'pressure' the young women, that's clearly bad.
The team members say they weren’t shocked by the arrest of Turner, 20 -- a men’s-team swimming star -- and had steered clear of him due to sleazy comments he would make about their bodies, according to InTouch magazine.

"Brock’s arrest wasn’t surprising to anyone on the team," one woman told the magazine. "From the beginning, the women swimmers had found him to be very, very odd. Brock would make comments to the women such as ’I can see your tits in that swimsuit.’ "

One top competitor said she would never let herself be alone with Turner after observing his drunken antics at parties, the magazine reported.

Seven killed in latest Kashmir fighting
[Iran Press TV] At least five pro-independence fighters and two Indian soldiers have been killed in a series of separate festivities across the restive disputed Himalayan region of Kashmire, military sources say.

Military front man Col. Nitin N. Joshi announced that at least four Kashmiris and one soldier were killed during fierce fighting on Thursday in Tangdhar sector along the de facto border that divides the restive territory into India- and Pakistain- controlled parts.

Joshi also alleged that the four men had crossed into the Indian-controlled Kashmire from the Pak side.

According to the front man, one Kashmiri and an Indian trooper were killed and four other soldiers maimed in a similar firefight in the Machil area on Wednesday.
